At the turn of the eighties the REAL new romantics weren't to be found in the pampered pup parade that was Rusty Egan's London Blitz scene but in the modernistic uniformity of the concrete towns of the Midlands. The sublime (Eyeless In Gaza, Bron Area, Kevin's Hewick & Harrison) rubbed shoulder-pads with the ridiculous (Component Erotica) and, most enigmatic of all, was In Embrace. And, no I'm not talking about Romanticism as a style or haircut or shoe, but as being characterised by a heightened interest in nature, the individual's expression of emotion and imagination, departure from the attitudes and forms of classicism, and rebellion against established social rules and conventions.
