A lifelong music fan, I’ve been compiling my year-end Top Ten list long before I started working at Parasol. In 1993, The Afghan Whigs’ “Gentlemen,” Liz Phair’s “Exile In Guyville,” and The Grifters “One Sock Missing” were leading the pack when I asked a co-worker what her favorite record of the year was.

She immediately answered, “Bettie Serveert’s Palomine.”

It was a band and an album I hadn’t heard before, and I respected her opinion, so I bought the CD later that week. Although it technically came out in 1992, it left my Top Ten list in a state of upheaval; something for which I owe my old friend a debt of gratitude.

Bettie Serveert have been among my favorite bands since that time and I’m delighted that we’ve been able to release 2 of their records on our label Hidden Agenda. The band just keep getting better in better and - as evidenced by the new songs the band just sent us - show no signs of running out of steam.

“Palomine,” the band’s highly regarded debut, had been out of print domestically until recently. Matador Records recently repressed copies of this essential release, rectifying the problem - at a low price of $9.75! It’s one of the best albums of the 90s and does an excellent job of capturing the wide-eyed enthusiasm of that era in independent rock. Buy it.
