When
it comes to “folk” music I’ve always been
more of a British Folk guy. Somehow the distinction makes
immediate sense in my head. Bert Jansch = British Folk. Joan
Baez not British Folk. Fairport Convention = British Folk.
James Taylor not folk at all. I put 23 year old Devandra
Banhart’s new release Rejoicing In the Hands in my
British Folk category. Described by Arthur magazine as “combining
old-time blues with the troubadour-ish balladry, psychedelic
rock and acoustic traditions of folk,” Rejoicing displays
a raw intimacy evident on those great ‘60s recordings
by Jansch and Davy Graham. Banhart’s guitar playing
isn’t in that stellar league, but the influences are
evident, and his song titles (“Dogs They Make Up the
Dark,” This Beard is for Siobahn,” “Tit
Smoking in the Temple of Artesan Mimicry,” and “When
the Sun Shone on Vetiver,” for example!) remind of
the very-British-Folk Incredible String Band.
