I can't remember when I first hear Kings of the Wild Frontier, but I sure do remember where I heard it...

When I was a kid, my Uncle Richard had (for lack of a better term) a kick-ass record collection. I'm not sure at what point I became aware of the music, but suddenly it was there...Elvis (Costello, not Presley), Nick Lowe, XTC, The Stones' Some Girls, and Kings of the Wild Frontier. The latter stuck, and stuck good. It seems like KOTWF has been a part of my life for so long that it has become a part of my consciousness. Even after passing through several musical phases in my life, it is the one record that remains a constant. It represented not only a completely new style of music to my young ears, but it also represented the beginning of the road toward independence. You wouldn't hear Kasey talk about the record on the radio. None of my classmates knew what the hell I was talking about when I talked about the record. When I went to buy my own copy of KOTWF at the nearest K-Mart, I was disappointed to find that they didn't carry it while at the same time I was secretly pleased that I wanted something that was (I thought) under the radar. It seemed like I was a member of a sorta-secret club...

To this day, I have heard Kings of the Wild Frontier more times than any other record in existence. More than any Beatles record, more than OK Computer...

I have heard is so many times that when I find myself away from music (and in dire need of some), I can play it from beginning to end in my head, first note to last. It has become a good friend. Comfortable like an old shoe, and just as durable...
