The Possibilities with Mike Mills (REM) at the 40 Watt Club
The Possibilities' trademark Southern-fried pop is now fully informed with the
resurrection of sixties psychedelia and seventies AM radio, there's more Wings
and Sweet and Outrageous Cherry in their sound now, more of Phil Spector's "wall
of sound". As the occasional backing band for Americana strongman Jack Logan,
and songwriters for the Minus 5 (Scott McCaughey, Ken Stringfellow and REM's
Peter Buck) song "You Don't Mean It" (released as a single and performed
by McCaughey on Conan O'Brien), The Possibilities have long bubbled under the
surface in the realm of post-Tupelo alt-country. On 'Way Out' they evoke a confident,
melancholy but at the same time joyous mood, songs that move like welcome summer
afternoon storms across your
consciousness...
"We worked on the record in a great Athens GA studio, Full Moon, and in
our home studio, PDM, for just under 2 years. During the recording of Way Out,
we also recorded Monkey Paw with Jack Logan, so we stayed pretty busy during
that time. Also during that period, we got some cool news that our friend Scott
McCaughey and his constantly morphing band The Minus 5 decided to record our
song You Don't Mean It, release it as a single and perform it on The Conan O'Brian
Show. Not too long after that, we performed as The Minus 5, with Scott, Ken Stringfellow
and Peter Buck here in Athens opening for guess who- REM. It was their first
electric show in town in 10 years.
Way Out is a very textured album, we tried to experiment with all kinds of sounds
and make a record that you can listen to over and over picking out new things
each time. We rotated our vintage guitars with a variety of vintage amps and
tube mikes. Our keyboard player uses all kinds of interesting instruments (a
Wurlitzer, Farfisa and Hammond organs, a Mellotron, etc) and makes each one distinct
with tube amps, distortion, fuzz and classic echo. All five of us sing throughout
the whole record, most of the songs have different combinations of lead vocalists
with everybody else filling out the background harmonies. We've tried to show
respect to all of our influences with Way Out, while at the same time trying
to create new styles and sounds."
