Lanterna is a
project put together by Champaign, Illinois mainstay Henry
Frayne. This gorgeous CD is filled with delay-drenched
guitars, reverb-y drums, and sparse singing (the record
is predominantly instrumental). These beautiful soundscapes,
rich in moody guitars and dreamy, thoughtful rhythms, define
Lanterna's sound; somewhat akin to Bruce Licher's Scenic
or Ennio Morricone's spaghetti westerns... an ideal soundtrack
for a road movie in slow motion or a drive across the desert.
Henry's
defining guitar arrangements have been an integral part of
the bands
Area and The Moon Seven Times. Area released four albums
containing Henry's work (Rough Trade/C'est La Mort Records).
The Moon Seven Times have released two albums (Roadrunner
Records & Third Mind Records) and one sold-out, seven-inch
single (Parasol-012).
This special
project is packaged in a beautiful, letterpress discfolio
designed by Independent Project Press.
"This one
hell of a beautiful, 90% instrumental LP suggests Frayne
uses his "spare" time damn well; not content
with mere pretty soundscapes, he conjures a mixed bag of
styles, mostly spare, spicy, spacey, quiet, ambient Talk
Talk/Bark Psychosis/Pink Floyd moods, but also haunted,
saddened spaghetti western... and dreampoppy, delay-vistas
that clutch one's heart strings. LPs with such a sense
of timeless wonder are a prize." -Big Takeover |
