Permer
- Summerdays
Attract the Pain
Debut
solo album from Martin Permer, half of dance-pop duo Waltz
For Debbie as well as a Club 8 collaborator. A relative
newcomer to Sweden's vibrant
Malmö Scene, Martin Permer is in love with technology, but not so much
that he can't balance his sage sequencing and addictive dancefloor-ready gems
with
handily strummed acoustic guitars, lap steel, and flute
For the writing
and recording of 'Summerdays Attract the Pain' Martin utilized the talents
of Thirdimension's Bjorn Stegmann, and pals from the wizard-behind-the-curtain
segment
of the Malmö Scene, choosing good friends over names you've heard of,
which is Martin's way. For his work on
Waltz For Debbie's 'Gone & Out' Martin received praise for his arranging
skills, "Multi-instrumentalist Martin Permer's tunes are light and breezy,
and the melodic dance tracks mix hyperactive beats with choppy acoustic guitars,
for a nice hybrid sound that sets the album apart" (review by Stewart
Mason for All Music Guide), and while these talents are the foundation
for 'Summerdays
', it is Martin's lyrics and vocals which make this so
very special.
High-gloss male vocal electro-pop for fans of St. Etienne, Stars, Pet Shop Boys,
and The Notwist
Words have long been a central part of Martin Permer´s life and he's always
been extremely comfortable expressing himself through the written word, poetry,
novels, and lyrics. When Martin realized the importance of music in the early
90's, he also discovered that forming the words into music had a healing effect
on him. In 1993, in the university town Lund, near Malmö, Martin and his
friend Stefan Sjölund began experimenting together and Martin became a student
in music production. Stefan left town in 1996, but soon after Martin met Annica
Lundbäck, and they discovered a mutual appreciation for the sound of bands
like St. Etienne and the meeting resulted in their first demo in 1997. Waltz
For Debbie's first single was released by Stockholm Records, but unfortunately
the song received little promotion. Disappointed but still earnestly pursuing
his dreams, Martin persevered, and thanks to Martin's father, who supported the
two young music enthusiasts with money, a new demo was recorded in January 1999.
The demo happened to land in the right hands and the whole album, 'Gone and Out',
was released by Sweden's Labrador label and labels in Sweden, Spain, Japan and
the Philippines, while in the USA, Hidden Agenda released the album with two
bonus tracks. The single "Once Upon A
Time" ended up as a radio hit on P3, Sweden´s biggest radio channel.
Since then, Martin has moved to Malmö, studying at the University, while
Annika lives in Stockholm, working as a political journalist. In 2001, Martin
invested in his own studio equipment and started recording songs that didn't
really fit in to the Waltz for Debbie concept, and the idea of his own solo album
was born. Martin also collaborates with other musicians like Club 8 and
Björn Stegmann from Thirdimension. Currently Waltz for Debbie are working
on their second album. [Bio: Hanna Calner]
