do you need this EP? Because you and your future Bear Quartet
fanatics need to hear “His Spine” over-and-over.
Just like in the good old days when you’d sprint home with
your favorite band's new 12” maxi-single and
lay on the floor next to the record player so you could reach
he tone arm without getting up to replay it over and over, and
listen to it 1000 times before the album ever came out. Plus
The Bear Quartet’s b-sides, as a rule, across
the board, are fucking brilliant: from the gregarious garage-rock
anthem “Lips”, the Amerindie
guitar-pop spasmosis of “Something Driven Through Me”,
a bitter yet sprightly “You Built Your Life Upon the Ruins
of Mine” (which is, um, my wife’s favorite,
hmm), to the Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want-ings
of “Someone”. EPs constructed as carefully as albums...a
lost art?
