New Releases
1990s, The
Cookies
PS, US Much-hyped debut album from Scottish act featuring former Yummy
Fur folk. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "There are a few reference points
for the 1990s debut album that you need to forget right away. It doesn't
matter that Bernard Butler produced, or that two of the band's members
were in a band with the drummer from Franz Ferdinand. It does matter
that the band in question was Yummy Fur because if you were a fan
of their off-kilter and jagged brand of post-punky pop, you'll like
Cookies. Of course that covers a couple hundred people at best, so
let's say if you're a fan of off-kilter, spunky and often laugh-out-loud
hilarious post-punk influenced pop that ropes in the best elements
of Art Brut, the Libertines, Comet Gain and the B-52's, then there's
a good chance you'll fall for the 1990s in a big way..."

crystal clear. The Kansas quartet distinguishes itself by using dynamic

Arbors, The
Symphonies For Susan
PS, UK The Arbors are the last great 'lost' vocal harmony act of the
1960s. Formed by two sets of brothers at the University of Michigan
in Ann Arbor in 1965 (and you thought the MC5 were the first cool
Ann Arbor act!), the quartet were signed to Columbia's Date imprint
and scored their first hit with "A Symphony For Susan" in
1966. Indeed, it's the symphonic nature of many of their recordings
that singled The Arbors out as being that little bit different from
their 'cooler' peers. Then in 1969 the group semi-re-invented themselves
with their third LP which spawned further hits in their mind-blowing,
Djbaiting versions of The Box Tops' "The Letter" and Blood,
Sweat & Tears' "I Can't Quit Her". The album also featured
stunning readings of Beatles, Dylan, Doors and Simon & Garfunkel
tunes and should now be regarded as a bona fide soft pop classic.
Shifting once again, in the early '70s the band moved away from pop
and into the lucrative world of advertising jingles where they forged
a 30-odd year career cutting ads for the likes of McDonalds, Texaco,
Green Giant and United Airlines. Rev-Ola is proud to present Symphonies
For Susan, the first definitive retrospective of this largely overlooked
and hugely talented band, featuring tracks from all three of their
albums, many of which appear on CD for the first time.

Association, The
Waterbeds In Trinidad
PS, UK Hey, everybody loves The Association! "Along Comes Mary",
"Windy", "Never My Love", "Cherish".
Their lush harmonic pop provided an alternative soundtrack to the
late '60s and their string of nine Warner Brothers albums between
1966 and 1971 represent a body of work unsurpassed by their peers.
It might be surprising to discover, therefore, that as late as 1972
they were still making top quality music, albeit for a new label,
Columbia. Their version of "Darling Be Home Soon" may have
failed to crack the US charts after a run of 12 hit singles but it's
probably the best Lovin' Spoonful cover of them all (and that's saying
something!). The accompanying album, Waterbeds In Trinidad, was the
last long-player cut by the original group and has an undeniable elegiac
quality to it. They tackle John Stewart's "Little Road And A
Stone To Roll" and Goffin & King's "Snow Queen"
alongside the usual array of original compositions, mostly composed
by returning prodigal son and founder member Jules Alexander. An overlooked
jewel in the Association's crown, it's about time this album was recognized
by a wider audience overlooked gem from these archetypal Californian
soft pop legends!

Barbez
Mexico City Impressions b/w Somebody Get Rid Of The King
PS, US This 7" is limited to 400 copies and was designed, signed
and numbered by Barbez's Dan Kaufman. 100 are on red vinyl and 100
are on white vinyl. These two intense numbers were inspired by both
a pleasant trip through a small historic neighborhood in Mexico city
and the detestable Iraq war. Cover art was inspired by the abuse of
prisoners in Guantanamo Bay. Look for the next Barbez record sometime
soon on Tzadik. These two songs were recorded and mixed by the great
Martin Bisi (Sonic Youth, John Zorn, Swans) at B.C. studios near the
Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, NY in 2006. They were mastered by Fred
Kevorkian (White Stripes) at Avatar Studios. The first song, Mexico
City Impressions, was conceived on a trip to Mexico City while strolling
through a lovely neighborhood called Coyoacan where Frieda Kahlo,
Leon Trotsky and Diego Rivera once lived some 60 years ago. There's
a kind of Parisian feeling to the neighborhood and to a little park
there with a carousel and people selling little bags of Mexican sweets.
It's an extremely vibrant place, full of Meso-American sounds and
colors floating about. This short pulsating song is my impression
of that vibrancy, color and heartbeat of Mexico City, and an homage
to the enchanting sound of the marimbas you hear everywhere in that
city. The second song, Somebody Get Rid of the King, is an angry lament
that comes out of a great fury at the Iraq War and especially at the
cruelty of the United States towards the detainees it holds in Guantanamo
and in the tortures it perpetrated at the Abu Ghraib prison. The subject
was close to my heart as I spent several years working as a researcher
with famed journalist Seymour Hersh on his book, Chain of Command,
which detailed these outrageous war crimes. The song begins in a slow
and mournful vein only to transform into a punk-rock blowout full
of rage.

Bat For Lashes
Fur & Gold
PS, US U.S. release with bonus track "I'm On Fire" and yes,
that's a Springsteen cover! Thom Yorke's a big fan. STYLUS MAGAZINE:
"Khan's music is usually quite bare and doesn't stray too far
from regular song structures but is still rarely straightforward,
full of unusual sounds and ambiguous meaning. There are some hints
of Kate Bush and particularly Björk here, "Bat's Mouth"
is most obviously like the latter, working itself up to an extended,
ecstatic whoop of joy set to music. Khan's vocals share much of Björk's
naïve otherworldliness throughout as well, if not quite the elastic
emotional range. But looking past the inevitable female singer-songwriter
comparisons, there are closer kindred spirits. Fur And Gold's galloping,
commanding opener "Horse And I" is a less harsh cousin to
Patrick Wolf's "The Libertine." "

Bishop Allen
The Broken String
PS, US 2006 was a big year for BISHOP ALLEN - The band recorded and
self-released an EP every month of the year. Fifty-eight songs later,
they completed one of the most ambitious recording projects in recent
memory. Their 2003 debut, "Charm School," was a hooky indie-pop
gem, but Bishop Allen's EP material proves far more sophisticated
and addictive. With the EPs, Bishop Allen's pop smarts sound timeless,
escaping the indie-pop idiom and revealing a language informed by
the Kinks, Dylan, and the Zombies. While it was in motion, the EP-a-month
project was the toast of the blogosphere, but it wasn't just an online
phenomenon; it garnered the band attention everywhere from the Wall
Street Journal to NPR's Song of the Day. This adulation all happened
without the benefit of a record label or publicist. Bishop Allen was
truly DIY, recording and releasing their own records and booking their
own tours. In early 2007, the band struck a partnership with DEAD
OCEANS and the first fruit of this relationship is Bishop Allen's
sophomore album, "The Broken String." If Bishop Allen made
a huge musical jump from the 2003 debut to the 2006 EPs, the band
made a quantum leap on "The Broken String." If Ed Sullivan
were alive today, Bishop Allen's story-songs would be ripe for prime
time. "The Broken String" is not just a great record by
Bishop Allen standards. It is poised to be the pop soundtrack to the
summer of 2007.

Blumm, F.S.
Meets Luca Fadda
PS, GERMANY For this record FS Blumm has written some of his most
light-hearted tunes, accompanied by NY trumpeter Luca Fadda. Wonderful
guitar and double bass lines are accompanied with processed toy instruments
and found objects. The new dimension of this album is the collaboration
with Luca Fadda who places digitally processed trumpets on top of
Blumm's material. These improvised elements add a new live feeling
to F.S. Blumm's music and creates a less melancholic mood than previous
records released on labels like Morr, Staubgold and Plop. There are
two 15 minute pieces on this album: one is `Ricke and Dina`, the other
is `Giorgi and Lucy´. `Giorgi and Lucy´ was inspired by
the last piece of a live set at the `epistrophy´ in New York
on December 1st 2006 where Luca Fadda and F.S.Blumm met on stage.
‚Ricke and Dina' is based on a performance done in front of
a childrens-audience during the presentation of a Peruvian fair trade
collection of children`s wear at the belleville-store in Berlin on
the afternoon of Oct. 1st 2005. This 3 hour live set has been carefully
recorded by Lupo.

Cope, Julian
You Gotta Problem With Me
PS, UK Julian Cope's new album YOU GOTTA PROBLEM WITH ME (no question
mark) is another protest album in the tradition of his previous releases
PEGGY SUICIDE, JEHOVAHKILL, AUTOGEDDON, CITIZEN CAIN'D and DARK ORGASM.
Unlike most records by Cope's head-in-the-sand punk rock contemporaries
(almost all of whom he believes to be shirking their primary rock'n'roll
responsibility as cultural mouthpieces), YOU GOTTA PROBLEM WITH ME
deals primarily with such currently controversial, nay taboo issues,
as religion (our own and other peoples'), and the West's latest wave
of xenophobia and self-doubts brought on by a combination of the war
in Iraq, the so-called 9/11 bombings and the EEC's latest huge wave
of migrants from former Communist countries. YOU GOTTA PROBLEM WITH
ME also addresses all of Cope's other long-term gripes: corporate
greed and the destruction of Mother Earth, misogyny and homophobia,
and our apparent inability to address such essential matters due to
cultural ignorance and the glaring faults in our education system.
Yes, Lenny Bruce and Bill Hicks are dead, but Cope's still pissed
off enough to fly the flag for all three! However, while the songs
of YOU GOTTA PROBLEM WITH ME are even more lyrically hard-hitting
than those on DARK ORGASM, musically this new record ploughs a far
more traditional Copean furrow, returning the listener to insidiously
melodic post-punk songs in the JEHOVAHKILL style, many sparsely orchestrated
with Mellotron, wah-wah guitars, orchestral percussion and even lush
harmonies. Released on double-CD and 12" vinyl gatefold sleeve
LP, the 13 songs are split into two sections, and are accompanied
by a 16-page booklet of insights, hard-hitting information, and a
very epic poem: all designed to shake us from our post-everything
stasis.

PS, US NOW AVAILABLE IN LIMITED EDITION VINYL FORMAT WITH FIVE NON-ALBUM
BONUS TRACKS!!! Somewhere between the breakneck touring to support
PINBACK'S breakthrough TOUCH AND GO debut, "Summer in Abaddon",
and the release of THE LADIES' debut album (his collaboration with
ZACH HILL of HELLA/TEAM SLEEP), the impossibly prolific Rob Crow had
an epiphany: SLOW DOWN. Not coincidentally, this revelation occurred
shortly after the birth of his first child (named Robertdale Crow
III, of course). Crow's time at home was suddenly more important than
ever. His family is all over "Living Well", his third solo
album: in the album title, the artwork (layered with dozens of family
photos), and the intensely personal lyrics which document Crow's courtship
with his wife, their marriage, and the subsequent birth of their first
child. Not only is "Living Well" Crow's finest solo album
by a country mile, it also transcends many of Pinback's most canonic
moments. It has the hooks and heart that he is famous for, with a
refined focus not seen in Crow's other projects.

THE DRIFT set out to tour relentlessly in support of the album. Two

The Drift's spacious, atmospheric compositions into deserted, zero-gravity

of patience and the payoff. Side B, conversely, is a dense, rhythmic
reworking of "Noumena's" most immediately accessible track,
"Invisible Cities." Sybarite gets to the point quick, and
fleshes out the deliriously funky details over the course of its emphatic
11-minute runtime. This 12" is strictly limited to 1,000 copies.

carefully crafted meeting of 7 sine waves. It is also highly recommended
that stereo listeners be seated at least 7 feet away from their speakers,
centered, with ears at speaker height. 500 made. 200-gram vinyl. Deluxe

Felten, Mike
Landfill
PS, US RECENT REISSUE. Mike played in Chicago rock bands through the
late 1960s & in the early 1970s he was a singer-songwriter who
shared stages w/ guys like Prine & Steve Goodman. He gravitated
to the country end of the spectrum in the late 70s & in the 1990s
he returned to playing w/ rock & blues bands. These songs span
3 decades, '1966 Summer School Blues is the oldest of the collection,
from a time when your '2 inches of hair" could get you kicked
out of school. 'Save Her Old Man is a Woody Guthrie type anthem of
being downsized in the 1980s rust belt. "Margie Got A Boyfriend
is a 50s style unrequited love rock ballad & it is juxtaposed
against 'Life Goes To Hell about not falling in love for the last
time. Each song is a story that needs to be told.

Garland, David
Noise in You
PS, US "Noise In You" is an album of gorgeous music about
noisy emotions: our desires and distractions, anxieties and passions,
love and loss, and the living hum of our bodies. It is DAVID GARLAND'S
8th album since entering New York City's downtown scene in the 1980s,
and it's the first to receive the wide distribution and attention
his music deserves. Garland is a multi-instrumentalist currently exploring
the sumptuous jangle of a 12-string guitar; he sings with a voice
that's deep, honest, and intimate. "Noise In You" is unclassifiable:
pop music that's both experimental and accessible, and is rich with
intricate layered harmonies and startling colors and textures. It
features the beautiful, sometimes mystical voices of a younger generation
of musicians -- SUFJAN STEVENS, MIRA ROMANTSCHUK (of MI AND L'AU),
DIANE CLUCK, VIKING MOSES, and DAVID DEPORIS -- together with guitars,
flute, piano, clarinet, sarode, oboe, and more. Noise In You unfolds
into a wondrous, subtly interconnected song cycle that sweeps you
up in its imaginativeness, drama, and sensual pleasure.

Grapefruit
Around The BBC
PS, UK Around the BBC collects all of the known radio session recordings
that Grapefruit made for the BBC in 1968 and 1969. These BBC radio
session recordings - in which several songs were generally cut in
a single four-hour session with minimal overdubbing - provide a previously
of unheard side of Grapefruit. Most of the 1968 studio recordings
that were issued by RCA and Stateside Records can be found on Grapefruit's
"Around Grapefruit" LP that was issued in early 1969. But
due to some unsympathetic remixing and overdubbing by producer Terry
Melcher during the compilation of the album, the versions found on
"Around Grapefruit" were not representative of the group's
true sound. Around the BBC lets you hear Grapefruit as nature intended,
offering stripped down, high-energy versions of the singles Dear Delilah,
Elevator, C'Mon Marianne, Round Going Round and more. But best of
all, Around the BBC contains several tracks that were never officially
recorded or commercially issued by Grapefruit. Highlights include
the George Alexander compositions Somebody's Turning On the People,
Breaking Up A Dream and Trying to Make It To Monday, all prime early
1968 Grapefruit, which could have easily found a home on the "Around
Grapefruit" LP. RPM's Grapefruit Around the BBC provides an alternative
look at a group that had so much more to offer than simply being known
as 'the band formed and backed by the Beatles'.

I Cantori Moderni Di Alessandroni
The Modern Singers
PS, UK Though Ennio Morricone revolutionized the art of movie soundtracks
during the golden age of Italian cinema, for most people his trademark
sound is the combination of haunting whistling, wordless choirs and
plangent, Duane Eddy-style guitar that formed part of the aural landscape
of Sergio Leone¹s so called spaghetti westerns. And it is impossible
to imagine these works existing in all their atmospheric, multi-textured
splendor without the extraordinary talents of Alessandro Alessandroni
and his remarkable choir I Cantori Moderni. During the sixties, Cantori
established a reputation for almost infinite versatility, regardless
of the demands made by some of Italy's most prestigious film composers
and this set showcases their fantastic ability.

opening the door for everyone from Jackie De Shannon to Gwen Stefani,
it's Miss Peggy Lee! Originally the featured vocalist in the Benny
Goodman Big Band in the 1940s, the lovely Miss Lee launched a series
of solo hits in 1942 beginning with her first # 1, 'Somebody Else

which sold over a million copies and secured her fame! Many more hits
followed for the next umpteen years, of which many were self-penned.
Her many songwriting collaborators, in addition to husband/guitarist
Dave Barbour, included such notable as Laurindo Almeida, Harold Arlen,
Sonny Burke, Cy Coleman, Duke Ellington, Dick Hazard, Quincy Jones,
Marian McPartland, Lalo Schifrin, Hubie Wheeler, and Victor Young,
to name just a few! On this collection we focus on her hits, of the
1940s and 1950s. The sexy, bluesy and assured tones of the woman who

Florist Fired
PS, US Five years is a long time. Five years is an excruciatingly
long time for a band like MARMOSET. Somehow this band has managed
to bottle into one album all of the idiosyncrasies and pathos that
have made them the critically-acclaimed band we all love. Merging
the Swell Maps-inspired tumultuous clamor of their debut EP "Hiddenforbidden",
the addictive two-minute anthems on "Today It's You", and
the epic joyful dirges from "Record in Red", "Florist
Fired" has it all. Although principal songwriter JORMA WHITTAKER
possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of Beatles-esque melodies, "Florist
Fired" leaves listeners with the unmistakable feeling that Marmoset
owes much more to a Richards-led Stones swagger- without the budget
or access to premium pharmaceuticals. In contrast to the seemingly
lecherous, self-loathing Whittaker gems, guitarist DAVE JABLONSKI
offers up detached ethereal odes like a man with his head truly in
the clouds. The idea of being a traditional, functioning band has
never quite caught on with Marmoset. Their live shows and behind-the-scenes
breakdowns are spiritually aligned with the likes of BRIAN JONESTOWN
MASSACRE; but unlike BJM, the music you hear from Marmoset is pure
sound vérité. No need for a ballyhoo project like "Dig!"-
although the tales Marmoset could tell would certainly make for riveting
viewing. Until the public is ready for such a trip into the madness,
tension and ecstasy that is Marmoset, "Florist Fired" will
serve quite nicely as their chariot on the road towards canonization.

Mr. Blotto
Cabbages & Kings
PS, US BACK IN STOCK! Mr. Blotto is a jam band band from Chicago.
They blend southern rock, folk, blues & country. They take the
Jam band asthetic into areas unfamiliar to the standard Jam Scene.
A well produced, well mixed, well executed kind of Americana that
actually owes far less to the Grateful Dead than one would expect.
The band sounds completely natural in their studio environs, having
nailed the elusive blend of acoustic & electric instrumentation
that most bands struggle w/when they try to set their work to tape.
It is thick, but not overbearing. Bits of imagery turn up through
the disc - Harleys, bunks, movie stars, & literary references
- that inform the album w/a cohesive intelligence. For fans of GOV'T

Rouse, Josh
Country Mouse City House
PS, US New album. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Beginning with 2003's 1972,
he's been cranking out sweet and sophisticated albums influenced by
his love of soft rock and filled with lyrical gems, smooth performances
and his wonderfully rich and intimate vocals, and Country Mouse City
House is no different. Again recorded in his new home country of Spain,
this time out Rouse handles the production himself and proves that
he learned quite a bit from his former partner Brad Jones as the album
is just as lushly layered and as filled with aural candy (like the
funky clavinet on "Hollywood Bass Player" or the horns that
bolster "God, Please Let Me Go Back") as on the last three
albums. The songs on Country are a nice mix of the last three albums,
too; some have the lazy, relaxed feel of Subtitulo ("Snowy Night,"
"Pilgrim"), some have the indie pop glow of Nashville ("God,
Please Let Me Go Back," "Sweetie") some have the soft
rock groove of 1972 "(Italian Dry Ice," "Hollywood
Bass Player"). Whatever it is, the sound they all have in common
is Rouse's first-rate songcraft, and there are few modern singer/songwriters
who can approach him."

from the LP version [i.e. the Homestead version], a few of my songs,
re-recorded, off The Freed Weed CD, and unreleased tracks, along with
the 2nd and 3rd 'singles' and part of the first split." Pitchfork
goes on: "Whatever the math, the extras and different mixes/takes
shift something once familiar into a gargantuan 79-minute lo-fi opera...
This Freed Man is overstuffed and weird, studded with some duds, and
entirely fitting. Part of the joy of early Sebadoh-- this collection
through Bubble and Scrape, aka the Gaffney years-- is the clash of
egos and brilliant songwriters. It's totally evident on this new version:
25 songs by Lou, 25 by Eric, and two covers, including a garage-punk
take on the Beatles "Yellow Submarine". Pretty telling,
right? To take it even further, the cassette was re-mastered at Abbey
Road Studios."

- that are given added mood & flavor by the charcoal vocals of

Stewart, John
California Bloodlines
PS, UK Cult artist John Stewart first came too the attention of the
public when his folk group The Cumberland Three issued their pair
of acclaimed concept albums featuring songs of the American Civil
War. Shortly afterward in 1961, he joined their mentors the Kingston
trio leading them through changes in style and continued hit singles
and albums in the volatile period 1961-67. As the Trio slowly ran
down operations, as John wrote songs for outside acts such as "Daydream
Believer" by The Monkees, which of course was, a worldwide smash
hit in 1967! John then made the eccentric country-psych "Signals
Through The Glass" with his wife Buffy Ford, though even John
himself joked that foreign language albums outsold them! Immediately
afterward, he would go to Nashville, where he would join Nik Venet,
Vince Martin, Fred Neil, and the Nashville master musicians who made
"Blonde On Blonde", "Nashville Skyline", Vince
Martin's amazing first solo album and Bergen White's "For Women
Only". This is where John cut his first real solo album, "California
Bloodlines" and where his real cult begins, as music loving cliques
from Rolling Stone to Zig Zag to Omaha Rainbow (a Brit magazine named
after John's song) raved over the album!

Trent, Jackie
The Magic of Jackie Trent
PS, UK Alongside Scott Walker and Dusty Springfield, Jackie Trent
was one of the most distinctive pop voices of the sixties. With Tony
Hatch, she co-wrote hits for Walker and Petula Clark and enjoyed major
success of her own when 'Where Are You Now?' ousted the Beatles' 'Ticket
To Ride' from the number one spot in the spring of 1965. Complimented
by some memorable Hatch arrangements, the restored Magic of Jackie
Trent and the superb material with which it has been augmented here
are testament to her brilliant artistry.

Weedeater
God Luck and Good Speed
PS, US After two critically acclaimed full length releases under their
belts recorded by Billy Anderson (Neurosis, Melvins, High On Fire,
etc.) and released respectively on Berserker and Crucial Blast Records,
the latest and highly anticipated album, "God Luck And Good Speed"
is upon us! All but one of the songs on the album were recorded and
produced by the legendary Steve Albini (Neurosis, High On Fire, Nirvana,
etc.) at Electrical Audio studios in Chicago. The sound is gigantic
and both the production and recording skillfully capture the intense
experience of a Weedeater live show while achieving tones that will
swallow you whole. The non Albini session track, "Alone",
was recorded by Mike Dean (Corrosion of Conformity) and simply consists
of an acoustic bass track, a banjo track, and vocally some of Dixie's
best somber and sub-baritone rasping. The finished product is nothing
short of amazing. Arik Roper provided the art and it is presented
on gold foil embossed on a 5" mini-gatefold, thick cardboard
jacket. It is an honor for us to present this massively heavy album
to the Lord hordes!

Keep Reachin' Up
PS, US Light In The Attic Records follows up its' deluxe reissues
of the first two Betty Davis classics with Keep Reachin' Up, a passionate
but suave mod soul collaboration between the lovely and talented Nicole
Willis & Finnish soul phenoms The Soul Investigators. From the
cold far North dance underground, this scintillating vocalist and
celebrated Finland funk collective have created a uniquely hot record
of romantic grooves. The Brooklyn-born Willis has worked with Curtis
Mayfield, the Brand New Heavies, and done crucial work for Mo' Wax.
In the late 80's Willis parted ways with both the Brand New Heavies
and the UK, returning home to the United States and joining the band
that would later become Deee-Lite. After a few years of lending vocals
to various groups, she became involved with the New York soul-hip-hop
collective Repercussions. A classic soul debut, Keep Reachin' Up is
an essential addition to any collection!! Nicole says: "The sound
of this group reminds me of dancing to the new James Brown 7"
in the record shops on Clarkson venue with my sister when we were
6 & 8 years old".

Anemones
Come Down Like A Cloud (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 7TH)
PS, US Grounded and propelled by the boom and tick of a lazy yet indefatigable
old-school drum machine, albeit augmented by occasional percussive
crash, rattle and stick of a genuinely human kind, ANEMONES are all
deep throb, jangled buzz, ambient drone, shiftless mumbling and, perhaps
most importantly, rolling waves of reverberation so pronounced and
significant as to be structurally necessary. Collected and combined,
these elements make a warm, oceanic, somewhat totalizing music that
operates inwardly, directed towards the uniquely fertile, semi-liquid
quasi-agriculture of the mind. Activated this way, mind as such is
here suspended, ala Descartes, as a kind epiphenomenal hazy feeling,
a ghost between the ears. Both in and out of the body, this half-consciousness
invokes a persistent, low-key dream-like psychedelic break in which
the normal world itself becomes hypnotically elusive and mysterious,
a pleasantly dislocating transformation enhanced by Anemones' minimalist,
somewhat lock-groove languorousness and nonchalantly sardonic theatricality.
But although often performatively 'druggy' in character, Anemones'
music isn't therefore 'about drugs' in the sense of being 'about being
made by means of drugs' or even 'about being made for or on behalf
of drugs', as if simply copying such important stylistic and conceptual
precursors as the Velvet Underground, Suicide, Spacemen 3 and the
Jesus and Mary Chain. Rather, Anemones produce a kind of 'post drug'
music, which here refers to a state of 'after-ness' and not prudish
abstention or dumbbell reform. In fact this is a specific aesthetic
strategy: after the drugs and drinks are long done and gone, sound
itself remains the psychotropic trigger par excellence. Hence, altering
perception, Anemones aim to turn listeners on ears first.

that, when associates of the label began DJing the track. It is a
damn near perfect pop song that has had people jumping up to the dance

kind of indie pop reverie that hasn't been heard for a long time.

Art In Manila
Set The Woods On Fire (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 7TH)
PS, US After Azure Ray disbanded, member Orenda Fink put her energies
into a solo record in 2005, called "Invisible Ones". Upon
touring in support of that album with various revolving band members,
she chose the cream of the crop and formed a new group called Art
Belle, then changed it to Art In Manila (a nod to radio host Art Bell's
exodus to the Phillipines). On this release, the band flirts playfully
with genre wanderlust without ever abandoning cohesion. Moody slow-burners
follow four-to-the-floor rockers that
butt up against serene ballads. A powerful debut.

Butterflies of Love
Famous Problems (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 21ST)
PS, UK ALL MUSIC GUDE: "Any band that would name themselves The
Butterflies of Love (a French euphemism for pubic crabs) probably
has a higher level of cynicism than the average Joe, and the third
album from the Connecticut-based group, Famous Problems, would tend
to confirm this; this is dark, faintly garage-influenced indie rock...with
an extra helping of fuzzed-out guitars and cheap organ up front...while
no one is about to accuse these guys of being Party Gods, they sure
know how to write a song and make a record, and Famous Problems connects
solidly after a few spins. Leaders Jeff Greene and David Greene bring
strong, emotionally expressive melodies to these tunes, and their
vocals communicate a dozen shades of angst without edging into self-pity
or narcissism, documenting busted lives in the less fashionable environs
of the East Coast with journalistic accuracy and a poet's balance
of sorrow and compassion. The Greene's band mates back them up with
simple but forceful rock and roll that brings forth both the beauty
and the sorrow of their psych-tinged folk rock with maximum emotional
impact."

Carta
The Glass Bottom Boat (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 21ST)
PS, UK The fruits of a lengthy process involving an ever-changing
line-up featuring a revolving door of San Francisco musicians, this
is the long-awaited debut from Carta, now with settled personnel surrounding
core member Kyle Monday. Engineered by Beulah's Eli Crews and featuring
Sacha Galvagna and Jared Matt Greenberg (Charles Atlas) and Alexander
Kort (Subtle) amongst others, 'The Glass Bottom Boat' is a remarkably
accomplished album, as one might expect considering the pedigree of
those involved. Having found a home on eclectic UK label Resonant,
Carta's audience should be broad and widespread, with their overall
sound avoiding pigeonholes. The album is mostly instrumental, predominantly
downtempo but with constant emphasis on melody. The title track features
full vocals from Sarah Bell, and sounds like the best thing Espers
have ever recorded. Packaged in lavish six-panel digipak. Early r
