Ahleuchatistas
What You Will
PS, US Third album from this amazing avant-technical, post-Beefheart, improv-core, math-metal, art-damage, punk-rock, power trio formed in February, 2003, Ahleuchatistas are a guitar/bass/drums trio from Asheville, NC whose music is a cutting cultural critique and a joyous musical experience. Their sound is as stripped down as it can be - they use no effects whatsoever - and they combine elements of punk rock, post-electronic, progressive rock mathrock, fusion, and minimalism. They have released two acclaimed records, but What You Will is their first release with significant distribution. They have gained a significant reputation very quickly for their powerful and precise live shows. 3 QuickTime movies of the band in concert, playable on your Mac or PC, which captures a taste of their staggering live performances! For fans of: Captain Beefheart, Don Caballero, Fantomas, Hella, Minutemen, Ruins.

Antony And The Johnsons
You Are My Sister
PS, US ANTONY & THE JOHNSONS breakthrough album "I Am A Bird Now" has certainly touched fans and critics alike. His second full-length - released in February - stands as one of the most globally acclaimed albums of 2005. The album's latest single is the anthemic and heart-rending "You Are My Sister", presented as a duet between Antony and BOY GEORGE. Together these two vocalists climb to the highest peak of emotional vulnerability providing for the listener one of the most touching and uncanny duets of the past decade. It's heartbreaking when Antony sings, "You are my sister / we were born / so innocent, so full of need / there were times we were friends / but times I was so cruel / at night I'd asked for to watch me as I sleep". With soaring and world-weary intensity, Boy George utterly commands the refrain: "You are my sister / and I love you / may all of your dreams come true." In "You Are My Sister," the pair sing from the depths of their hearts for the world. This extended single also includes three new, unreleased songs recorded during the "I Am A Bird Now" sessions.

Artery
Into The Garden: An Artery Collection
PS, UK Artery are one of the great lost bands of the post-punk era. They were widely acknowledged to be Sheffield's answer to Joy Division. Regularly championed by the likes of Jarvis Cocker of Pulp as the steel city's finest export, until now Artery have been denied the career appraisal they so richly deserve. This collection is headed by the much admired, hugely atmospheric 'Into The Garden', voted fourth best record of 1981 by listeners to John Peel's show. It also draws on highlights from their cult 1983 LP One Afternoon In A Hot Air Balloon and the mini-album Oceans. The recordings feature later Mission guitarist Simon Hinkler as well as the unique presence of singer Mark Gouldthorpe, one of the most incisive lyricists and volatile frontmen of the era. The package is completed with exclusive remixes and never before officially released tracks, as well as full sleeve notes and track annotation.

Ash, Daniel
Come Alive
PS, UK Daniel Ash has one of the most impressive resumes in rock history. With Love And Rockets, he fashioned such alternative staples as "No New Tail to Tell," "Ball of Confusion," and the 1989 Top Five smash "So Alive." "Go," the massive 1984 club hit by his Tones On Tail project, has been featured in such movies as Grosse Pointe Blank, and is continually featured in TV and radio commercials. Moby sampled and used the title for his track GO and Fun Lovin Criminals sampled other Ash material. And let us not forget his role in influential band Bauhaus, and the immortal 1979 single "Bela Legosi's Dead." In 2002 Daniel toured playing tunes from through out his career, many of which he hadn't played live in years. The result of which is 'Come Alive', fifteen live songs that follow Daniel's illustrious career up until now. With the triumphant Bauhaus performance at Coachella 2005 and rumors of additional reunion shows, count on Daniel Ash to keep innovating and delivering music that is far from the main stream.

Bad Dudes
S/T
PS, US Ex-MIRACLE CHOSUKE (Dim Mak) & ex-FRIENDS IN THE MOUNTAINS. There's still the spastic melodies & the attention to danceable beats & the synthesizers, but they have tweaked these melodies & multiplied them at a frenetic pace to match a beat structure that doesn't so much try to be chaotic, as just slightly beyond the reach of your rational capability. They use their music to rock the sense back into you.

Bananaskin
Countryside Has Opened Our Tired Eyes
PS, JP Bananaskin is a six-piece pop outfit from northern Finland, Oulu. Their journey in the world of the popmusic started in 1998. Their first album "Sometimes The World Is Too Loud" was the first co-operation with the producer Ian Catt from London. He put the band to another level within his magic fingers and good sense of the popmusic. He has been working with the band Saint Etienne ever since they started. Ian Catt produced and recorded Bananaskin's first album and it was out in August 2003. This brand new album Countryside Has Opened My Tired Eyes is also produced by Ian Catt and it includes original Bananaskin music just like before but for the very first time they wanted to do a cover song, which is "Lotta Love" by legendary Neil Young. On a leading role in a band is the singer Mari Rautio. Her personal voice reminds a little bit of the lady singers like Cardigans, Isobel Campbell, Astrud Gilberto and Suzanne Vega. His husband Timo Rautio writes all the songs (words and music). They believe in their original and own songs and style. Countryside Has Opened My Tired Eyes has its own theme and motif, you'll get it after listening the record. We must understand sometimes that slow train will get you there just the same. That's the tip!

Beatings
Holding On To Hand Grenades
PS, US Intelligent, guitar-driven art-rock, hailing back to the 80's/90's heyday of college music. Neither punk nor alternative. Melancholic lyrics, scream-sung counterpoint harmonies & hair-raising guitar leads front a pummeling, thunderous rhythm section that swings unexpected shifts in tempo & turns songs on a dime. Compared to Hüsker Dü,Mission of Burma and the Pixies for their erratic guitar work & abrasive vocal stylings.

Benny Profane
Trapdoor Swing / Dumb Luck Char
PS, UK 22 tracks. A reissue CD by Benny Profane, the cult Liverpool alt.pop band who released two albums and a slew of singles between 1986 and 1990. Singer/guitarist Dave Jackson and bassist Becky Stringer formed The Room in 1979, perennial John Peel favourites who released three albums. Benny Profane formed from the ashes of The Room in 1985, featuring Jackson and Stringer with guitarist Robin Surtees and drummer/guitarist Joseph McKechnie, ex-The Passage. Benny Profane cut two albums, Trapdoor Swing (1989) and Dumb Luck Charm (1990), both of which attracted much critical acclaim despite arriving in the midst of the baggy 'Madchester' trend of the time. This newly remastered CD features both albums in full, and includes stand out single tracks such as Rob a Bank, Hey Waste of Space and the Ian Broudie- produced Skateboard to Oblivion. The CD closes with two bonus tracks from the first BP demo in 1985, featuring Will Sergeant of Echo and the Bunnymen guesting on guitar. Contemporary reviews compared Benny Profane with The Fall, the Bunnymen and the Velvet Underground, and praised: "Benny Profane leave 95% of the competition looking dim and tongue-tied" (Melody Maker); "Another brilliant four-piece from Liverpool on a long, loud, disturbing trip" (NME); "Deftly executed, edgy, Northern guitar pop" (Music Week). Trapdoor Swing / Dumb Luck Charm offers 22 tracks in total, all remastered and with running time of 76 minutes. The booklet includes images and a detailed band history by Dave Jackson. In 1991 the band became Dust, and in 1995 Dead Cowboys, who continue to record today.

Bong-Ra
Soldaat Van Oranje
PS, US Soldaat Van Oranje...the Soldier of Orange. BONG-RA The dreaded Dutchman launches his hardest and deadliest sonic ammunition so far... His previous release 'I Am The God Of Hellfire' on Very Friendly records searched the realms of head-nodding downtempo hardcore breakbeat rave...only to see this album blasting shrapnel like a motherfucking sound grenade. Dark and twisted is the theme of this album, a rave gone sour by bad Speed or XTC. The usual trademark Bong-Ra punching through the dancefloor orientated tracks. Soldaat Van Oranje is influenced by past, future and present in The Netherlands, using themes, samples and melodies which are in someway related to BONG-RA's homeland, be it the persecuted satanic 'Goatriders' from the Middle Ages, up and till the recent Islamic fundamentalist attacks. Not forgetting Holland's finest musical creation...Gabber...yes...Gabber!

Calling All Monsters
The Traps That Work Best
PS, US Rock and Roll will never be declared a dead artistic expression as long as bands like SF's Calling All Monsters arrive, adept in subverting, contorting, and shaping the mediums' language to a seemingly new, revitalizing call to arms. Calling All Monsters shows a clear love of the loud rock guitar, joining influences such as the pop rhythmic strum of England's The Wedding Present to the Archers of Loaf's lo-fi spiked aggression, all the while maintaining their own sound in an endearing, unpredictable manner. "The Traps That Work Best" is a perfect example of the band's slanted, enchanted guitar pop underscored with a tight rhythmic tension where guitarist/vocalist Matthew Troy's (ex-Track Star) voice can be heard wistful, gainfully competing with clashing instruments led by a melodic rhythm section emphasized by bassist John Nespeco's endlessly alluring choices outside the expected realm of the four string. It is however, guitarist Bill Chartier's intuitive creativity alternating between sparse prickly notes, feedback, and a fierce jagged chording that gives Calling All Monster's its signature as one of the more exciting bands in recent years to emerge from the American Underground. While "The Traps That Work Best" may be the debut album for Calling All Monsters, Matthew Troy, the bands lead singer and songwriter, certainly isn't new to San Francisco's indie music scene. For over 10 years, Matthew co-fronted and wrote songs for the popular indie trio Track Star, whose celebrated releases, "Communication Breaks" (Die Young Stay Pretty/Sub Pop) and "Lion Destroyed The Whole World", (Better Looking) endeared the band to thousands of fans and have made them favorite sons of San Francisco.

Carrie
Honey Blue Star
PS, US Re-press. This one's been going crazy since featured on the Global Hit segment of The World (NPR) by Marco Werman three weeks ago. Split release from Static Discos (Mexico) and Dearstereofan (Spain) labels. A collection of warm electronic folk songs, full of dreamy tones and true avant tweenes. Carrie's breathy voice takes us close to the worlds of Piana, Stina Nordenstam and Tujiko Noriko, as she strums her guitar alongside a basic print of electronic sounds. Her honey voice floats into an unforgettable pool of soft melodies, cushioned beats and childlike wonder, as Carrie truly displays a unique sensibility that brings us close to a world full of love and humor. Carrie, Laura B. from Guadalajara México, is one of the young leading artists in a new wave of sounds coming from Mexico. Her music has appeared in samplers from electronica indie labels in her country, such as Abolipop and Soundsister, and her demo caught the attention of many journalists and radio stations in Mexico and Spain that immediately praised her simple but sweet electronic songs sung in English. 'Honey Blue Star' is Carrie's debut album, produced with Ruben Tamayo.

Casiotone For The Painfullly Alone
Young Shields
PS, Uk *OWEN ASHWORTH finally jettisons the confines of lo-fi minimalism for an expanded production palette, teaming up with JHEREK BISCHOFF (DEAD SCIENCE, DEGENERATE ART ENSEMBLE) for the ride. "Young Shields" is a driving, menacing anthem with its cold synths, frantic drum machines, and pulsing bass undermined by Ashworth's signature monotone-a brilliantly bitter narrative that stands as the most confident and sinister track in the Casiotone songbook. The single's B-side is an electro reworking of of Prince's "When You Were Mine," which features guest vocals from XIU XIU's CARALEE McELROY, and somehow manages to sound giddy and gloomy at the same time. The CD version includes two beautifully retrofitted CFTPA classics from their sold out Alphabet Series 7-inch-"Roberta C" and "The Subway Home."

Catfish Haven
Please Come Back
PS, US CATFISH HAVEN took its name from the rural trailer park nestled on the southern tip of Missouri where the trio's singer and main songwriter, GEORGE HUNTER, spent his early childhood. His father is a welder and, as with many trades, you must go where the work is. So the family packed up and left Catfish Haven for a Chicago suburb. It was there as a teenager that Hunter met future bandmates MIGUEL CASTILLO and RYAN FARNHAM. Their friendship was born out of a mutual love of skateboarding and music. After a few months and a move into the city, the three-piece stormed Chicago with a self-financed CD, complete with handmade beer box covers, to begin spreading the gospel of "The Haven". Word travels fast in the Windy City's music scene, and soon Catfish Haven had intrigued enough people to be invited to play alongside the likes of MY MORNING JACKET, DANIEL JOHNSTON, KINGS OF LEON and ZWAN, flooring audiences with the raw intensity of their live set. Akin to guitarists/vocalists like BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN and JOHN FOGERTY, Hunter, a howling crooner with gravel in his honey-sweetened voice (a la SAM COOKE), is known to strike his acoustic while stomping through each number. Castillo's pounding bass grooves are heightened when joined by Farnham's forceful, yet tasteful, drumming. Consider this: howling + pounding = smooth. An improbable equation that Catfish Haven has managed to make work. So this is it. The guys in Catfish Haven are who they are; there's no room for pretension here. They play their hearts out for anyone who will listen 'cause they've got a love for music that drives them. And every note they play is intended to recapture those magical moments back at Catfish Haven.

Charlottes, The
Liar: Best Of The Charlottes
PS, UK The Charlottes were formed in Huntington in Cambridgeshire in 1988 and were usually tagged alongside the likes of The Primitives and The Darling Buds of the post C86 era, but sonically were more attuned to the fx driven wall of sound pioneered by My Bloody Valentine. Their debut single 'Are you happy now,' received much support from the fanzines of the time [House of Dolls, Pop Eats Anarchy] and was said to be a twee classic by Dave Simpson of Melody Maker. They were signed to Subway Records in February 1989 and this resulted in the mini album 'Love Happy'. Steve Lamacq of the NME gave the album 9 out 10 and declared The Charlottes to be 'altogether more sexy than Kylie'. Just as impressed John Peel interviewed the band for his Cambridgeshire show and they later recorded a 4 track session for him at Radio 1 which was repeated. The band split from Subway and signed a deal with Cherry Red, their first release being the EP 'Liar'. This was promoted by a short tour and the making of a video which received exposure from MTV's more alternative shows. In December 1990 Simon Scott left the Band to join Slowdive who were on the Creation label. Cherry Red then released the existing tracks the band had recorded under the title 'Things come Apart'[1991]. The Charlottes left behind a small but impressive legacy; this release includes all their studio recordings. Tracks: 1/ ARE YOU HAPPY NOW, 2/ COLD, 3/ STUBBORN, 4/ SEE THE DANGER SHINE, 5/ EVERYTHING TO ME, 6/ IN MY HAIR, 7/ LOVE HAPPY, 8/ LOVE IN THE EMPTINESS, 9/ BE MY RELEASE, 10/ COULD THERE EVER BE, 11/ LIAR, 12/ PRAYER SONG, 13/ SEE ME FEEL, 14/ BY MY SIDE, 15/ MAD GIRLS LOVE SONG, 16/ BEAUTIFY, 17/ LOVE IN THE EMPTINESS [ALT VERSION], 18/ WERE GOING WRONG, 19/ BLUE, 20/ VENUS.

Checkers
Running With Scissors
PS, US The second album from power-pop rockers THE CHECKERS is an ambitious explosion of new sounds and flavors. The album opens with a song called "Invitation" that sounds like something Pink Flag-era Wire might play if Joan Jett decided to front the band, and ends with a song called "Bass Wolf," a dark and delicious tribute to the late bassist of Japan's Guitar Wolf that includes one of the Checker's most impressive riffs. In between, the music flashes by fast and furious in shades of blue and gray, stomping the pop like nobody's business.

Night of the Bloody Tapes
PS, US Compiled from three years of cassette releases, Night of the Bloody Tapes provides a shattering drive-in experience of unrelenting horror and harsh noise nightmares. Equally fueled by Fangoria magazine, import laserdiscs, third generation VHS bootlegs, damaged contact mics and DOD death metal distortion, THE CHERRY POINT has set the ultimate bait in the trap of terror. Four tracks, over 40 minutes of static walls, electronic jabs and junk crashes. Contains material originally from the long deleted split tapes with Ahlzagailzehguh, Black Sand Desert, Luasa Raelon, Nkondi, Andy Ortmann, Pedestrian Deposit, The Rita, and more. Chop Chop
Self-Titled
PS, US Chop Chop is Catherine Cavanaugh with a rotating cast of characters and this records is hella awesome. It's so awesome that we are putting it out, and unlike most of the releases we put out, it's actually someone else's band, and not secretly one of us. Okay, Rick appears on one song, Aubrey mixed it and Seth has been known to pop up at live shows, but Chop Chop is Catherine's gig, and it's an amazing one. A truly unique sound, a unique outlook on songwriting and pop, and a compellingly personal outlook that keeps all of us perpetually obsessed with this record. Christy Cheng, Carla Ceruzzi and Dave Picariello also make appearances on several songs on Keys, Bass and Conga respectively.

This is the follow-up. From mesmeric to buzzy Byrdsy rush to Kinksy oomph to countrified lament, it's their wildest, deepest, most surprising album so far. Connors is frequently pegged as an avant bluesman, and the blues are never far from the surface of his art -- but what a shimmering surface it is! The brevity and lyricism of his improvisations bear the mark of haiku; the floating, expressionist tones reflect the influence of MARK ROTHKO; and as he conjures keening Celtic wails, Connors offers himself as medium to the ghosts of New York City Past. With "Sails", Connors enters the third decade of such intimate explorations. In the course of these two discs, we pass through saturated phrasings, slowly undulating drones, doldrumic introspection and squalls of white noise. The penultimate highlight is a duet with Connors' aesthetic compadre, the late, great JOHN FAHEY. It's an intuitive and seemingly predestined meeting of two enlightened fellow-travelers: wily Fahey as the Dr. Livingstone of raw Americana to Connors' indefatigable Stanley. For his own part, Connors can evoke more clarity and purity in a short cluster of notes than most of his shred-happy contemporaries can muster in a lifetime -- and with Fahey's passing, he may be justifiably considered this country's greatest living guitarist. Ultimately, Loren Connors path, while not for the timid, is one of unspeakable treasure: a journey to the heart of brightness; a quest to penetrate a Terra Incognita of the soul.

Conrad, Tony
Fantastic Glissando
PS, US It's 1969, and TONY CONRAD wants to take you Higher. Celebrated for the thrilling roar of his amplified violin, Conrad is a founding father of 'minimalism' and a giant in the American soundscape. Now Conrad's own Audio ArtKive imprint presents the first in a series of releases that reveal the wild breadth of his 40-year career, including field recordings, piano compositions, film soundtracks and more. "Fantastic Glissando" (1969) is a series of (d)evolving electronic compositions created with sine-wave oscillators. The instrumentation is different, but the effect is typical Conrad: soaring, aggressively textured and jet-engine massive. This first-time CD release contains an extra ten-minute bonus track not included on the original LP version.

Curve
Gift
PS, UK 'You get nothing for being ahead of your time but if there's a bright side to all this, it's that the duo's creative hunger has remained intact. Tunes such as the yearning Hung Up and the power-chord-laden Gift stand shoulder to shoulder with their critically acclaimed Doppelganger album, while the more reflective Perish improves upon it.'--Q, 4 out of 5. "Your playing small doesn't serve this world." Nelson Mandela At last the much anticipated studio album from Curve, the respected and groundbreaking British duo of Toni Halliday and Dean Garcia, is here in a pretty little package. Yet as with all things pretty on the outside, you never know what's on the inside. With 'Gift', the group's first official release since 1998's major label debut Come Clean (Universal), you'll hear an aural assault of Toni's confident and gorgeous vocals matched by their own densely perfected production alongside Dean's signature bass playing. Songs range from the soul degrading 'My Tiled White Floor' and electro-rousing 'Gift' to the album's first hard-driving single, 'Hell Above Water';.'My Bloody Valentine's' Kevin Shields plays guitar on two forceful, unforgettable tracks, 'Want More Need Less' and 'Perish', a song Curve says may well be their best ever. Sleazy, electronically savvy, fierce, dreamy and impenetrable describe the musical passages of their most recent work, produced by Toni, Dean and Ben Grosse (Filter, Soak, Book of Love), who also mixed the album.

Delta 5
Singles And Sessions - 1979-81
PS, US Part of the Leeds/UK art/music scene in the late '70s that launched The Gang Of Four and The Mekons, Delta 5 was signed to Rough Trade after only a few months in existence, and released their first single, "Mind Your Own Business/Now That You've Gone" in 1979. BBC host and producer John Peel requested the band do a "Sessions" gig for him and they were officially on their way. Relentless touring with The Gang Of Four, Echo And The Bunnymen, B52s, The Specials, The Teardrop Explodes, and U2 put the group on the map. They continued until various members departed in 1981, when they recorded one last single and broke up in 1982. Weapons of Ass Destruction
PS, US ...Destruction. Trio consisting of the less than anonymous THURSTON MOORE (gtr) & JIM O'ROURKE (synth) (SONIC YOUTH) & Swedish free jazz legend MATS GUSTAFSSON (sax, electronics). Avant/punk/noise/free jazz. Moore's guitar will make you think of NY in the 80's and Sonic Youth around the time of "Bad Moon Rising." O'Rourke's laptop was last heard on Wilco's monumental "Less Than You Think" on A Ghost Is Born. Mats Gustafsson sounds like Albert Ayler playing punk rock. The result of these three titans clashing together is an intense blow-out. Raw, grandiose & brutally beautiful. Rec. live in Sweden in 2002.

Duffy, Stephen & The Lilac Time
Keep Going
PS, UK Stephen Duffy's new album Keep Going received the best reviews of his career including: 'The opening track, Home, may well be the most beautiful song written this year. As always the best music is to be found on the margins - please explore.' 5/5 The Times Magazine. 'Really quite moving, as hipster obsolescence always is. As are the semi-acoustic arrangements that frame his lamentations. He hasn't given up yet and nor should you.' 4/5 The Independent On Sunday. 'Stephen, I do believe this is the finest album of yours I've heard yet.' Sunday Telegraph. 'Another lovely folk-rock record from one of music's most underrated misfits.' 4/5 The Times. 'Rare candour, telling details and sparse but exciting arrangements bring out the best in Duffy's wounded but resolute confessionals. Wake up and smell the Lilacs.' 4/5Daily Mirror. 'Duffy is a craftsman who combines easy-going pop tunes with a piercing turn of phrase. This is an album that pop fans will fall in love with.' 4/5The Mail On Sunday. 'I can't imagine you not loving this' Word. 'Thank goodness somebody still releases this stuff.' Time Out. 'This album is wonderful.' The Spectator. 'Keep Going is up there with his best. Durrett, Liz
Mezzanine, The
PS, US In contrast to Liz's previous work, her second release is a surprisingly hi-fi affair. Gone are the hissing ghosts and unsure echoes that once haunted and obscured her recordings. Durutti Column
Keep Breathing
PS, UK Written and played almost entirely by Vini Rielly, the album is built out of ideas generated over the last year and was inspired by African hip hop, traditional Jewish music (Kletzer) and 1930's piano music by Art Tatum. The 12 tracks were created over 3 months in a room 'not much bigger than a broom cupboard' using only one microphone and whatever time and equipment Reilly and the album's programmer Ben Roberts had spare. This inventiveness adds to the richness of Reilly's amazing 'honey wrapped in sandpaper' guitar playing. The gorgeous song 'Maggie' samples a school choir he heard on the BBC 14 years ago, while other tracks such as the defiant 7 minute long love song, 'Let Me Tell You Something' are just as powerful and reflective, showing the positive frame of mind Vini was in when making the record. The new album is more polished and less haphazard than his previous efforts and Durutti Column have also committed to touring it extensively in 2006, with a live band consisting of Kier Stewart who has produced The Fall, Badly Drawn Boy and Elbow, the now legendary Bruce Mitchell on drums and John Metcalf on viola. Track listing: Nina, It's Wonderful, Maggie, Helen, Neil, Big Hole, Let me Tell You Something, Lunch, Gun, Tuesday, Agnus Dei, Waiting.

PS, US The rope-strong, luminous follow-up to their critically acclaimed 2004 debut, "Me First". Recorded while singer/songwriter Blake Sennett was on tour with his other band, Rilo Kiley, the album is propelled by the kind of unsettled, exploratory impetus that's only native to the American open road. While portions of the album were recorded in studios, Sennett recorded and produced the majority of his creations in environments he was passing through. The dichotomy between feeling completely at home and at the same time homeless on the road fuels Sennett's biting, reflective lyricism and grand, sweeping compositions.

Elevator Drops, The
Episode One
PS, US The Archenemy Record Company is proud to announce the long-awaited release of Epidose 1, the long lost prequel album by the late, great boston band, The Elevator Drops. During their existence, the Elevator Drops were known as one of Boston's best bands, mixing rock, new wave and experimental in a way that at the time seemed completely unheard of. Think the Faint's Dance Macabre, only five years earlier. Maybe they were too ahead of their time, but they all seem to be getting by in the world, even if their band didn't achieve the rock stardom they so richly deserved. And now, we've finally gotten our grubby hands on the start of it all - the songs that got them signed to a major, and put them on the road for a year of their life.

Erik Satie
Vexations
PS, UK Written by eccentric French composer Erik Satie in 1893, the extraordinary score for Vexations is just three lines long, yet a complete performance (840 repetitions) may last for anything between 14 and 28 hours. First performed under the supervision of John Cage in 1963, this radical yet enigmatic work is now recognized as a significant milestone in avant-garde music. This meditative 70 minute recording features 40 repetitions of the motif, performed by Alan Marks on piano. The recording was produced by Thomas Wilbrant. Some credit Vexations with occult numerical meaning, others as 'Satie's greatest prank' or a 'poor man's Ring of the Nibelung'. Curiously, despite the almost infinitely repetitive nature of the piece, the central 18 note motif is notoriously hard to remember. Indeed no single pianist has yet been able to negotiate a complete performance of all 840 repetitions. By performing 40 repetitions over 70 minutes, Marks provides a relatively concise introduction. Digitally recorded, the CD also features detailed liner notes by Stephen Whittington.

Cusp
PS, US This collaborative is an entity capable of producing, perverting, destroying, distributing, stealing, and selling a vast and sprawling array of existing as well as unheard of forms of cultural products and concepts. Their performances range from serene to chaotic. Including anywhere from two to a dozen performers, each is a truly unique experience. They've played shows with Isis, These Arms Are Snakes, Pelican, Bastard Noise, and more. As well as playing the conventional club circuit, they've also been included as part of several museum and art collective events. They document every performance with audio, video, and photography, creating an extensive library of work. "Cusp" is beautiful in its chaos and simplicity. It is a humbling and sad composition, the sort of sadness that tunes the listener into the physical state of humanity.

Foxx, John
Crash And Burn
PS, UK Line-Up: John Foxx, Louis Gordon. Info: Chorley-born art student Foxx founded Ultravox! in 1975, working with Brian Eno on the band's self-titled debut a few months before the ambienteer joined forces with David Bowie. Ultravox! were Britain's first synthesizer rock band, fusing elements of Krautrockers such as Can, Neu! and Kraftwerk with the English art school heritage of Roxy Music. Foxx left the band in 1979 and a year later released the primitive, stark electro-pop classic, Metamatic, featuring his first solo hit, Underpass. On this album he developed a form of urban, European blues, which would later influence Detroit techno and UK dance acts such as Bomb The Bass's Tim Simenon who collaborated with Foxx on their Nation 12 project at the end of the '80s. More recently Dave Clarke and Adult. have also declared themselves as fans. In the '80s the introspective Englishman designed a personal, romantic style, expressed on albums such as The Garden ('81), The Golden Section ('83) and In Mysterious Ways ('85), but also through painting, graphic design, book jackets and his own, as yet unfinished novel, The Quiet Man. In 1995 he made a characteristically low-key return with a new album, Shifting City, described by Stephen Merritt of The Magnetic Fields as 'one of the best albums of the nineties'. he releases his latest solo album, Crash And Burn, which he recorded with Mancunian electronic genius Louis Gordon. Crash And Burn is an edgier record than Foxx's previous album, 2001's The Pleasures Of Electricity which concentrated on achieving a sense of rare intimacy in the pretty arrangements. This time around Foxx & Gordon have dreamt up fresh twists on Moroder pop, Kraftwerk (the tough-sounding She Robot), electronic-ballads (Smoke and the sleazy croon of Once In A While) and even analogue-fuelled industrial rock (the title-track). The album also opens with one of Foxx's career bests, Drive, a pounding techno-pop track with an oddly emotional lyric, while Sex Video is set to fire-up in electro clubs any day now. Biog: John Foxx was born in Chorley, Lancashire in the north of England. A child intellectual, reading the manifesto's of the Futurists aged 9, a career in the arts beckoned as Foxx enrolled at the Royal College of Art in London before forming the band Ultravox. After 3 albums, including one produced by the now legendary Brian Eno, Foxx left in '79. His first solo disc, Metamatic, was issued in 1980 through his own label metal beat, with Virgin handling distribution. With the exception of some bass, the sound was completely synthetic. It became his biggest selling album, featuring the single "Underpass." A livelier album, The Garden, followed a year later. Named after the studio where it was recorded and which Foxx would frequent for the next few years. The opening "Europe After the Rain" is perhaps his finest moment. The Garden also included a version of the "Lord's Prayer (Pater Noster)" sung in Italian to a disco beat! Initial copies came with a booklet entitled Church, complete with Foxx's photomontage images, poems and lyrics. 1983's The Golden Section was one of the few Foxx releases produced by an outsider, Zeuss B. Held. As with The Garden it peaked slightly lower down at 27. If that was a shame, it was nothing compared to the shock of his fourth and final album for sometime, In Mysterious Ways, charting at number 85 on its release in 1985. Two singles featured, both failed to chart despite the usually stunning Foxx illustrations on the sleeve, especially on "Stars on Fire." After this John Foxx vanished, his name bearing 'whatever happened to..' conversations. On the sleeve notes for 1992's compilation Assembly, Foxx hinted he was totally disinterested in the mid-eighties music scene. He spent his time lecturing (helping shoot the video to techno band LFO's debut namesake single), illustrating book covers and collaborated with Bomb the Bass mainman Tim Simenon on the short lived project Nation 12. In 1997 Foxx re-appeared almost as mysteriously as he had disappeared with two new albums: Cathedral Oceans and Shifting City (with Louis Gordon). The former was primarily ambient in nature and namechecked musician Harold Budd who, during an interview, cited Foxx 'a fantastic artist.

It's a complete mystery what the hell they're going for, but somehow Tom Waits, the Mekons, Crime & the City Solution, and the Talking Heads all come to mind. But to truly get anywhere describing the weird hobo/punk/folk sounds on their self-titled debut full-length CD, one would still need to mention the Russian lyrics and the almost Velvets-y pop songs that pop up through the inspired mess spilling out of the twelve tracks. They've been touted recently on Fat Cat Records' website, and their shambling hobo/punk/folk shows have been drawing crowds around San Francisco for a couple years now.

Future Sound Of London
Amorphous Androgynous: The Otherness
PS, UK File under: Dance. Line-Up: Gary Cobain, Brian Dougan. Info: 'This other worldly masterpiece is so far out you need a telescope to see it.' 8 out of 10 NME. 'An epic that manages to be moving, hilarious and monolithically impressive...the sound is like a beam of white light from heaven.'6 out of 5 (this mark goes all the up to 6...Its one better.) --MUZIK. 'The most prog rock album since Air's Moon Safari' --THE OBSERVER. 'The Otherness is madly wonderful' 4 out of 5 THE GUARDIAN. 'To be heard is to be believed. The aural equivalent of a triple fudge, double-chocolate cake with gold dust icing.' 5 out of 5 SEVEN. 'A modern psychedelic classic' MOJO. 'A mystical cosmic voyage of sonic and cultural experimentation via lush, enveloping atmospheres' --Q. 'With its exotic cosmic oozescapes, the obvious comparisons are The Beatles, 'Space Oddity' era Bowie, The Doors and Beefheart who was the walrus again? --THE INDEPENDENT. Biog: First recognized as the dance duo behind the club hits "Stakker" (as Humanoid) and "Papua New Guinea," Future Sound of London later became one of the most acclaimed and respected international experimental ambient groups, incorporating elements of techno, classical, jazz, hip-hop, electro, industrial, and dub into expansive, sample-heavy tracks, often exquisitely produced and usually without easy precursor. Notoriously enigmatic and often disdainful of the press, the group's Garry Cobain and Brian Dougans worked their future-is-now aesthetic into a variety of different fields, including film and video, 2- and 3-D computer graphics and animation, the Internet, radio broadcast, and, of course, recorded music. Although they usually disdain their earlier work as play-for-pay club fare not representative of their later musical vision, many of the thematic concerns of their earlier 12"s and their first, heavily dance-oriented LP, Accelerator, followed them into their later work. Usually filed under ambient, that work is often much more than that, drawing from the history of experimental electronic music with a relentlessness that has helped to push the calmer elements of that genre's reputation into decidedly more difficult directions. The pair also grew in repute as remixers, obliterating tracks by Curve, Jon Anderson, David Sylvian and Robert Fripp, and Apollo 440, and rebuilding pieces of almost majestic complexity with the remnants. The duo's works of the mid- to late '90s -- Lifeforms, ISDN, and Dead Cities -- were important stopping points on the road of rabid hybridization characteristic of post-rave European experimental electronica (ambient, jungle, trip-hop, ambient dub, etc.), and the pair's somewhat punk rock attitude (despite their success) did much to underscore the scene's underground roots. After a lengthy hiatus marked by rumors of mental illness and a cottage lifestyle, Cobain and Dougans returned in 2002 with The Isness, a record heavily influenced by '60s and '70s psychedelia.

PS, US Gown is from the islands of British Columbia Canada, and spent an entire year living on one such island alone with his dog and 3 or more goats. It is a journely and far from perfect, but the misteps sparkle and gleam with all the beauty that surrounds us. This LP was recorded over the course of one month in Florence, Mass after a 2 month tour across the USA, playing in a duo with Christina Carter. Gown and Christina also contributed a side the My Cat Is An Alien split LP/CD series and have a CD coming out on Foxy Digitalis/Digitalis Industires. Hollingsworth, Taylor
Tragic City
PS, US "Taylor Hollingsworth and his band are sloppy and wild in the mode of The Stooges or The MC5 (or The Rolling Stones at their worst), which are likely models, yet this band's overall tone often recalls bands such as The Only Ones or The Heartbreakers. If they played fast and hard instead of loose and slinky, they could even be The Saints. A lot of the sloppiness is salvaged, or accented, by white-hot guitar runs that take the sound into Johnny Thunders territory, by way of Billy Gibbons. Vocals, for the most part, remain in the more disturbing/intriguing range of Peter Perret and Nikki Sudden, so you can see why it is difficult to accept this band's approach as just a happy accident" - Black & White.

Hooker, William/Renaldo Lee
The Celestial Answer
PS, US As individual performers, WILLIAM HOOKER and LEE RANALDO are explosive. As collaborators, they are thermonuclear. A kinetic, avant percussionist and poet, Hooker is one of New York's most important band leaders, having fronted groups that included DAVID MURRAY and DAVID S. WARE. Ranaldo leads the improv supergroup TEXT OF LIGHT, whose fluid membership includes Hooker, as well as CHRISTIAN MARCLAY, TIM BARNES and MISSION OF BURMA's ROGER MILLER - and of course, he's a co-founder of the indefatigably experimental SONIC YOUTH. With "The Celestial Answer," Hooker and Ranaldo have created a work of blindingly brilliant, elemental force. Rays of white guitar noise penetrate clouds of analog synth; molten drumming blasts across free-form poetics. The dynamic is beautiful and inspired - a simple cold-fusion of intuitive interaction and boundless sonic freedom. These are thoughtful and emotionally attuned artists. Open your ears and they'll take you on a soaring voyage through an ecstatic firmament, into the howling mouth of infinity.

I.A. Bericochea
Sueno
PS, SPAIN After his hypnotizing releases on M_nus, Richie Hawtin's celebrated minimal and maximal avant dance label, "Sueño" is the second album from Madrid based I.A. Bericochea. "Sueño" is a work of concentrated quality and depth, forty minutes of rare beauty that is seldom heard in an electronic music album; a sophisticated listen that is danceable and full of squandering emotions that bring a sweet shudder to the ear. "Sueño", meaning 'dream' in Spanish, is a perfect audio example of how blood weights more than water. Fans of Murcof, Fax and all things that are beautiful, dark, dreamy and minimal should not miss on this captivating release. Mastered by Stefan Betke (Pole & ~Scape). "I.A. Bericochea's music, a profoundly thinned-out minimal techno that's more absent than present, offers the profoundest kind of intense listening, grounded with bass that reverberates deep in the body and graced with white noise that seems to graze the very surface of the ear drum, like summer grasses brushing against weathered cement" XLR8R. "Bericochea brings just enough emotional edge and sonic vibrancy to his dry minimalist beats and deep quavering bass patterns to give them a stealthy, unsettling life of their own. His compositions seem to come out of nowhere, accumulating an undeniable presence that lingers on long after the final shudder" THE WIRE.

Johnson, Richard Leo
Legend of VernonMcAlister
PS, US Touted by Playboy as "the most innovative guitarist since Jimi Hendrix," and by 20th Century Guitar as "mind-boggling!", Richard Leo Johnson's style is marked by startling speed, complexity and hauntingly unfamiliar harmonies. After over a decade of being on the road, performing concerts and guitar clinics and work-shops, Richard was discovered by Blue Note, who released albums in 1999 and 2000, gathering extreme critical praise. Here Richard has traded in his double-neck acoustic for a well-worn, 1930s National Duolian steel-bodied guitar. Richard was inspired by this unique instrument and its sounds to try something different from any of his other albums. A CD of deep beauty and innovation, created with just this one old guitar, some simple electronic and tape effects, and Richard's talents. Richard's music is singularly beautiful, but it also is not afraid to have a 'bite' and it will appeal both to the new generation of fans discovering edgier solo acoustic guitar music of people like Derek Bailey, Steffen Basho-Junghans and Jack Rose, as well as to fans of acoustic guitar geniuses such as Robbie Basho, John Fahey, Michael Hedges, John McLaughlin, Steve Tibbetts and Ralph Towner. windows."-San Francisco Bay Guardian.

Karacter
Self-Titled
PS, US The Archenemy Record Company is happy to announce the release of Karacter's self-titled debut album. Brought to you by the team behind Freezepop and Lifestyle, Karacter takes the ideas behind their "primary projects" one step further back, by exploring their earliest influences late '70's synthesizer pop. Calling on inspirations like Kraftwerk, Giorgio Moroder, the electronic works of Eno and Bowie, the earliest works of Human League, Depeche Mode, Simple Minds, and OMD, Karacter harkens back to a time when technology had not yet overshadowed musical and lyrical ideas, and when the artistry of those acts was not hemmed in by concerns of commercial viability. Incomparable to today's "new new wave" groups, Karacter has a different outlook. "We went back to our earliest influences, music we had lost track of over time. Music defined by its technological limitations, not created in 128 track modern studios. We embraced tape and hiss, and of course, stayed in touch with early analog synthesizers and rhythm units, which have always been a cornerstone of our work," group frontman Sean Drinkwater offers.

Kid Congo & The Pink Monkey Birds
Philosophy and Underwear
PS, US The debut release from this new New York City-based band led by none other than KID CONGO POWERS. As the title may lead one to believe, the album is a highbrow, and often humorous, viewpoint of a tough and sleazy low life world Kid's character's inhabit. Herbert Hunke's 1940's Times Square in "Johnny," Shakespeare's Richard III's unrequited loves haunt modern guys in "Richard Three," S&M leather men's inner struggles in "Even Though Your Leather is Cliché," or the post 9/11 breakup of a relationship in "The Weather The War." Although heady, and heavy subjects, the music is a mélange of stomping soul swagger, angular no wave, glam-era Lou Reed celebrations and New York stories. Guitars scream like banshees, drums swing from the rafters, basslines snake charm, and electronics reference more Roxy Music Eno than the over exhausted electroclash. Mixed with Kid's casual laconic and resonant talk/sing style, whether dueling with a LITTLE ANNIE or doing it solo, Kid gives heartfelt performances.
