Acid Mothers Temple & The Cosmic Inferno
Pink Lady Lemonade: You're From Outer Space
PS, UK This really could be AMT's first 'summer album.' Unlike previous Cosmic Inferno albums this one doesn't reach in the red status often -- it's more out there, like they've gone back to their mountain retreat and taken too much mushroom tea perhaps. But when it does finally soar, Kawabata's guitar has never sounded so alive. The first AMT&TCI studio recordings since the addition of Pikachu, drummer and vocalist with Osaka grenade-girl duo Afrirampo. The popular AMT standard 'Pink Lady Lemonade' showcases a 21st century acid rock update on the '60s San Francisco psychedelic sound. On 'Pink Lady Lemonade - You're From Space,' the Cosmic Inferno crew give PLL a new lease of life and reinvent it as a trippy/chilled out monster. As it rolls on, they sing, adding new riffs and taking it to the stars and back. It's like hearing it for the first time all over again.

Apollo Sunshine
Shall Noise Upon
PS, US A celebration of darkness & light, love & death, friends & lovers. Featuring members of Drug Rug, Tulsa and Viva Viva. PITCHFORK: "In the age of the mp3, you have to like a band that respects your attention span and ability to sit through a 38-minute album, giving you something that works as a whole beyond its considerable highlights. Apollo Sunshine does that on their third LP, turning out an eclectic and thoughtfully sequenced running order that runs the gamut from pastoral folk to distorted-everything blues-punk to Latin-tinged indie pop to orchestral interludes. It's indie rock that wants to be and is a dozen things at once, and the band members have the songs to make it work."

Barn Owl
From Our Mouths A Perpetual Light
PS, US Since first bearing witness to Barn Owl's mythically desolate amplifier alchemy last year, we've been rabid fans/fanatics. But like lots of badass bands, BO are a rolling stone, heavy on the transformation tip, and the BO of today is an altered beast from the one that folkily fingerpicked Bridge To The Clouds and their self-titled disc way back when. And in case we're not being clear: this is a beautiful thing. From Our Mouths A Perpetual Light burns with the sun-dead majesty of a Death Valley burial ground, all wasted waterless expanse and cracked earth smoke blowing in the dry wind. Heavy western drone revelations bleed into forlorn guitar drift, downcast percussion plods across the plain, a skull on its side lies in the sands. Evan Caminiti and Jon Porras have somehow flawlessly evolved Barn Owl into a blazing new universe, and From Our Mouths is the first mission statement from their new spectral/aesthetic outpost, a stunning and timeless eight-song suite of grim cinematic electricity. Tune in, drop dead, rot on. In swank matte jackets with 'four-armed demon warrior-yogi' artwork by the band. Edition of 435.

Blitzen Trapper
Furr
PS, US Furr is the fourth record by Portland sextet Blitzen Trapper and the follow-up to last year's highly acclaimed Wild Mountain Nation. Written in the gaps of the group's frenetic touring schedule and recorded mostly in a hoary old telegraph building close by the Willamette River, the new record refines and expands on the far-ranging yet distinctive songcraft that lies at the heart of Blitzen Trapper's unique appeal.

Boduf Songs
How Shadows Chase the Balance
PS, US This album is a further step away from the "folk" label, which never seemed all that appropriate to Mathew's work in any case. If you record solo w/ an acoustic guitar the description is somewhat inevitable. But the results might more rightly be construed as "acoustic death metal" considering the themes of death, alienation, fear, hatred & isolation that are his forte, as well as his affinity for gothic imagery.

Brightblack Morning Light
Motion To Rejoin
PS, US Haunting, beautiful, and weird in equal doses, Brightblack's second album for Matador was recorded entirely under solar power. Deeper and heftier than their much loved 2006 self-titled LP, this record recalls musicians as diverse as Lee Perry, Bob Dylan, My Bloody Valentine, Neil Young, and Otis Redding, with sounds ranging from folk to gospel to experimental electronics. "Ethereal, lovely...a narcotic, blues-infused sound that recalls Mazzy Star and Morcheeba" - Rolling Stone. "Sounds like The Band in a coma" - Spin.

Budd, Harold/Clive Wright
A Song For Lost Blossoms
PS, US A new record of ambient melody and transcendental mood portals from minimalist/modernist master Harold Budd and friend guitarist/composer/producer Clive Wright. A Song For Lost Blossoms nicely builds on both artists' previous ambient work. A Song For Lost Blossoms was recorded live and in studio at different locations including the artists' homes, at REDCAT (Roy E. Disney Concert and Theater), Los Angeles, and Clive Wright's Desert Sky Studio, Joshua Tree, CA. These recordings represent the very best of Harold and Clive's work together over the period 2004 to 2006. Artist and friend Anna LaCazio reads her poem, "A Song for Lost Blossoms", the title track. Harold Budd is recognized as "The Godfather of Ambient Music". His works are the cornerstones of the modern minimal and ambient canon. Clive Wright is a founding member of the platinum selling pop/rock band Cock Robin and has worked as writer, producer and guitarist with Human Drama, Tears for Fears members, Montell Jordan, The Black Eyed Peas and Peter Gabriel. Budd and Wright met as residents of the beautiful and remote Southern California desert community of Joshua Tree. With only just a little imagination one can easily hear the influence of the Southern California desert environment; the sounds of its stark beauty, serene quiet and otherworldly presence. Cover art painting by Billy Al Bengston. Mastered by Eric Ryan, Ravenswork with similar EQ settings as Harold's classics The White Arcades and Lovely Thunder.

Cage, John
Composition In Retrospect
PS, US 2008 reprinting, originally published in 1993. Paperback, 184 pages. "Written in his characteristic 'mesostics' (linked lines of prose poetry), Composition In Retrospect is a statement of methodology in which John Cage examines the central issues of his work: indeterminacy, nonunderstanding, inconsistency, imitation, variable structure, contingency. Finished only shortly before his death in 1992, Composition In Retrospect completes the documentation of Cage's thought that began thirty years earlier with his classic collection Silence. Given Cage's vigilant attention to the present, the text can serve as an introduction and invitation to his work as much as a summary or conclusion. Also included in this volume (as Cage requested) is 'Themes and Variations,' a 1982 piece inspired by friends and heroes such as Jasper Johns, Buckminster Fuller, Marcel Duchamp, and Erik Satie. Together these two works make for a book that is both a testament to the artists Cage admired, and a clear statement of his own ars poetica."

Casiotone For The Painfully Alone
Town Topic
PS, US The "Town Topic" EP is the soundtrack to video artist and photographer Laurel Nakadate's debut feature film, "Stay The Same Never Change." Laurel commissioned CASIOTONE FOR THE PAINFULLY ALONE'S Owen Ashworth to proved all of the music for "Stay The Same Never Change", right down to the character's ring tones. The "Town Topic" EP consists of thirteen short instrumental pieces, book-ended by tow vocal tracks that were recorded specifically for the film. This EP also collects tracks from two limited, vinyl-only EPs (the "Town Topic" 7", released by OIB Records in Brighton, England, and STSNC Instrumentals 7", released by People In A Position To Know Recordings, Inc. in Olympia, WA), plus one bonus track, the previously unreleased "Lesley Gore on the Tami Show (instrumental)."

Celestial
Crystal Heights
PS, SWEDEN "You never dream about tomorrows, you only you only dream about yesterdays. There and back again, there and back again..." This is the anticipated second album from Celestial, the work of Swede Andreas Hagman. The album is filled with beautiful pieces of dreamy pop, jangly guitars, ace melodies and vocals from heaven. We believe this release will be loved by those who appreciate the essence of Creation and Sarah Records, Swedish pop, The Field Mice, Ride, Trembling Blue Stars, My Favorite, Language of Flowers and Camera Obscura. The wonderful vocals on the recordings belong to Malin Dahlberg (Douglas Heart, Laurel Music, We Are Soldiers We Have Guns) and Ulrika Nymark (Northern Fields). While first album "Dream On" draw resemblance to C86, JAMC or a sun kissed Ride the new album shows a band changing towards a slightly cleaner sound-scape still cherishing their old 7" singles.

Chairlift
Does You Inspire You
PS, US That twee-sweet little electro-pop song in Apple's new iPod commercials (for the Nano-Chromatic) is Chairlift's "Bruises". Order up! While the trio frequently shares the live stage w/groups like Yeasayer & MGMT, their sound is wholly unique to the scene, but still kind comparisons to Sweden's The Knife abound. Fronted by Caroline Polachek, whose soulful vocals bring to mind both Kate Bush & Chan Marshall, the band artfully fuses whimsical electro-pop w/folk & tasteful psychedelic imagery.

Sounds of Liberation
PS, US VINYL REPRESS! Soulful syncopated rhythms of sun drenched high desert weirdness... sounds skither from behind the bleached stucco & crumbling cinderblocks to crawl across the parched asphalt of your mind. The debut release of this great Desert Rock supergroup feat. DAVE DINSMORE (UNIDA) on bass, ALFREDO HERNANDEZ (KYUSS) on drums & BRANT BJORK (FU MANCHU, KYUSS) on guitar & vocals. Was originally released on the late, great Man's Ruin label way back when.

Chop Chop
Screens
PS, US Catherine Cavanagh will tell you that her reasons for making a new album are personal and will firmly deny that the new songs are a "response" to Christina Aguilera's latest two-disc statement. Catherine is Chop Chop's singer, songwriter and [instrument-player]. She got help on this album from a few drunk, wayward Boston musicians she lured into her attic studio for an occasional session. Catherine's band mates are Chris Cupcake who plays bass, Carlos Cola XXII on drums, and CC Moniker on guitar. "Screens" is the name of Chop Chop's new album. Like its predecessor, the songs combine pop, rock, and electronica, with influences ranging from the 1930s to the Bee Gees to Run DMC. This time around, quaintly analog instruments like the French horn, a keymonica, and a toy Zylophone have been tossed into the mix alongside cranky, craggy digital synthesizers and electric guitars. Screens will make you laugh, it will make you cry, it will make you dance, it will haunt you and mysteriously force its way to the beginning of your iPod shuffle queue.

Christmas Decorations
Far Flung Hum
PS, US The third album finds the group again broadening the palette used in their unique take on modern experimental electronic music. The sound is both warmly present & otherworldly, think early Zoviet France or maybe Asmus Teichens remixing a Finnish folk collective. Acoustic banjo & pump organ drones meld w/ pedal-processed ethnic percussion, subtly treated guitar washes, & pointillistic analog synthesis, to create deep compositions that chart unexpected terrain & reveal new layers upon each listen.

Cloudland Canyon/Mythical Beast
Harvest Hunt
PS, US This fair pairing has been in the wings for a few years now by our count, but tripped things come to those who wait, so better late-as-shit than never. Cloudland Canyon have been spanning geographies (Brooklyn, Germany, Memphis) and genres (Krautrock, drone, psych-pop) since at least 2002, but only recently has their technological studio-sorcery began to gather steam and affect the more far-flung populations (powered in no small part by their partnership with Kranky Records). Anyone who's gotten lost in CC's latest, Lie In Light, knows this duo is currently at the pinnacle of their potency, and their offering here ('Harvest Hunt') is a fantastic mechanical motorik ascent into symphonic hypnosis. Comparisons to classic Teutonic psych outfits of yesteryear are warranted but inadequate: this is music of today, for tomorrow. On the flip, beloved Not Not Fun in-laws Mythical Beast return to the vinyl spotlight with two luminous soul meditations conjured during the past winter's grey maze of days. Both ballads burn with Corinne's voice-for-the-voiceless defiance, wind-draped and incensed by Jeremiah and Aaron's subtle electric string energies. Naked music for open spaces, empty skies, endless nights. High-audio 45 RPM LPs (NNF's first!) in matte-jackets with cloud-skull artwork by Blackblack beauty Diva Dompe. Edition of 415.

Cope, Julian
Copeulation
PS, UK "Issued for the first time as a DVD collection, the videos of Julian Cope and Teardrop Explodes display some seminal moments of genius and English pop/rock history. This collection tracks ten years in the life of Julian Cope, through times when he burnt out, rose again, burnt out, and then rose again -- showing why he got the epithet 'flawed genius.' Beginning with his work as part of legendary UK rock band The Teardrop Explodes and continuing onto his highly successful solo career -- the DVD charts the extraordinary musical and personal journey that Cope experienced during the period. Many believe that he was a weirdo pretending to be normal -- but the theory of a normal guy pretending to be sub-normal and displaying genius is more than borne out by the contents of this DVD. These are the complete works of an enigma." Running time: 60 mins. 5.1 Surround Sound, NTSC format, Region-free.

Co-Pilgrim
Pucker Up Buttercup
PS, AUSTRALIA Sparkling & beautiful down beat pop gem from British troubadour Mike Gale. Co-Pilgrim was started in August of 2005 by Mike Gale following the demise of his former band Black Nielson. 'Pucker Up Buttercup was released on Low Transit Industries across Australia in March of 2007. The album received glowing reviews and substantial airplay. Gale had been toying with the idea of adding a female vocalist/guitarist for a while so when he met Alysia Manceau at one of her former bands shows in Melbourne he decided to ask if she'd be interested in joining Co-Pilgrim. Alysia Manceau is a self taught musician who began playing guitar at the age of five. After Studying film and television at RMIT in Melbourne she realised that her true passion in life was music. Writing and performing locally in Melbourne since 2000 as a solo artist, Her formidable underground reputation as one of Melbournes most unique singers and guitarists led to her becoming a founding member in Alternative Country/Rock and Roll band Ned And The Meds. Luckily for Gale, Manceau agreed to take up his offer of joining Co-Pilgrim formally and the two have been working together since, indeed, such was the pairs belief in their new found unison that Gale moved into Manceau's sharehouse in order to live and breath together with the music they create, which is a beautiful blend of folk and country, with emphasis on space and harmonies. The newly strengthened Co-Pilgrim have been performing frequently around Melbourne for the past six months as well as recording a demo CD of future single and album material.

Cotton Jones Basket Ride
The River Strumming
PS, US COTTON JONES BASKET RIDE is the new band fronted by singer-songwriter Michael Nau (former frontman of PAGE FRANCE). "The River Strumming" is a delightful slab of fuzzed-out dream folk that thumps with a musical heartbeat in a manner not dissimilar to that of forward thinking modern-day shamen like Will Hart and Brightblack Morning Light. This album completed itself, so to speak, forming in pieces over a six month span while the band was working on its debut full-length "Paranoid Cocoon" (to be released in late 2008). Nau and company initially set out to make a cohesive record, and made just the opposite. Some songs were recorded on one machine in December, finished on another machine in March, destroyed in April, then attached to another song in May. Likewise, it fits so well with the sort of records that ST. IVES is in love with releasing - the three-legged dogs of the world, the records that don't quite fit elsewhere, barely even within an artist's own body of work. "The River Strumming" is limited to 300 vinyl copies in hand-made packaging - each LP hand-wrought (as all St. Ives releases are) by the band itself - and is not expected to remain in stock long.

Danielson Famile
Tri-Danielson!!! (Alpha/Omega)
PS, US September marks the beginning of a season in which we look back upon and celebrate some of our favorite DANIELSON titles from a rich back catalog that has spanned over a decade. This epic journey of retrospection begins with the vinyl reissues of "Tell Another Joke At The Ol' Choppin' Block" and "Fetch The Compass Kids" (both being released on SECRETLY CANADIAN) and "Tri-Danielson!!! (Alpha/Omega)" (being released on SOUNDS FAMILYRE). In addition to being back in print for the first time since 2001, these reissues have some unique attributes such as: "Tell Another Joke At The Ol' Choppin' Block" is now available as a 2x12" LP format (as opposed to the 2x10" format in which it debuted) and includes 4 bonus songs from a live WFMU session from 1996. "Tri Danielson!!! (Alpha/Omega)" has been partially remixed and fully remastered and makes its vinyl return dressed up in a brilliant new gatefold jacket along with a very special bonus track. Dead Confederate
Wrecking Ball
PS,US THE ONION AV CLUB: "Dead Confederate's Wrecking Ball sounds like Bleach-era Nirvana covering My Morning Jacket. (That's a good thing.) The Georgia band stirred up some buzz in January with its self-titled EP, a strained, aching redefinition of roots-rock that hinted at something bigger and better. Consider Wrecking Ball the fulfillment of that promise: Howling with impassioned anger about various bleak, gloomy subjects, Hardy Morris masters a musical tension that's reminiscent of Kurt Cobain (especially on the pounding "Goner" and frantic "Start Me Laughing"), with undeniably catchy riffs surging through his band's noise. And while the psychedelic, echoing alt-country guitar should appeal to early MMJ fans, Dead Confederate is considerably more baleful and abrasive... Dead Confederate's alt-country/grunge hybrid doesn't just feel like a compelling debut, it feels like a compelling new genre."

Del Reys, The
Savage Instrumental
PS, US Surf, garage and big beat instrumental waycoolery featuring Ric Menck! The California Del Reys Of The San Fernando Valley, or simply The Del Reys, as they're known to fans, formed in 2005 over a mutual love for rockin' instrumental music. They have been labeled a "surf group" by the media, but don't strictly adhere to a reverb-drenched, tidal wave of sound. Instead, the Del Reys include elements of fuzz, garage rock, heavy British blues, 50's rock & roll, and even country & western into their eclectic approach. The band consists of Tony Marsico (Cruzados, Matthew Sweet, Martini Kings), Ric Menck (Velvet Crush, Matthew Sweet, Susanna Hoffs), and Pete Phillips (Matthew Sweet, Marianne Faithfull, Six Finger Satellite). Their debut album was recorded on a cheap 2 track recorder because they wanted to achieve a "trashy, primitive" sound similar to their biggest idols, Link Wray & the Wray Men. The Del Reys are intent on a basic, no frills approach that rocks hard, but they also have a romantic side.

Dora Flood
Dream Out Your Window
PS, US New album from West Coast psych-dream-shoegazers. Over the course of their 6 lps and 1 ep, the band dora flood has produced some of the most notable shoegazing dream-pop to come out of the United States. Their brand new effort, Dream out Your Window, is perhaps the band's most enchanting album distilling years of psychedelic rock and dreamy, melodic pop into an aural elixir so potent, it is sure to leave you on Cloud 9. With praise coming from discerning music magazines like Big Takeover, Skyscraper, Losing Today and Ptolemaic Terrascope, it is no wonder that audiences leave their shows feeling that they witnessed something of a secret, psychedelic phenomenon. These live close encounters, as well as their classic studio work, leave listeners with bold memories of pounding grooves, lush orchestration, and melodies so timeless that they take up residence in the heads of those fortunate enough to cross their path.

Elephant Micah
Hindu Windmills
PS, US Digital version of the out of print LP. As far as we're concerned Elephant Micah should have been a household name for years now. Stripped of all superfluous sound, and presented with the sort of stark realness that creates a deeply psychedelic mood without being in the least bit overt. Recorded direct to hand held cassette recorder using only acoustic guitar and vocals, with just sparse backing from a little percussion, cello, electric piano and double-tracked vocals, the gauzy overdubs of past releases have all but vanished here. At the same time the lyrical depth & intimacy have easily doubled, creating some of the most affecting country-tinged melancholy you will ever lay ears on. Heavy mini-lp-style craft paper gatefold cover with elusive, ghostly two color offset printing, plus a double sided fold out insert & woven Japanese inner sleeves.

Emaciator
Coveting
PS, US Misery wears many masks, but Tulare, California fatalist Jon Borges has etched his mark on most of them. For at least half a decade, he's pursued increasingly suicidal tendencies under his Pedestrian Deposit guise (which is currently on hiatus), splicing subdued loops of morbid beauty against savage canyons of harsh noise histrionics. Lately, though, he's been straying more and more from this aggressive exercise in contrasts in favor of his Emaciator alias, which draws from the same dark wellspring of bitter memories and bipolar rage but, instead of unleashing it in grand frenzies, bottles everything up inside until it seeps out of the pores. Early efforts/cassettes retained a strain of buzzing nausea reminiscent of his PD days, but the last 12 months have witnessed a complete abandonment of any ties to the past. Times are still bleak, sure, but the grey prisms of brooding ambience Borges now conjures and slowly collapses convey a depth of mood and subtlety far surpassing simple signifiers like indifference, resentment, or remorse. Coveting collects together five exquisite Emaciator compositions (including two particularly riveting songs that were debuted live at Echo Curio) for a harrowing 40 minutes of troubled solace, crisscrossing suicide guitar lines, and entranced self-reflection. Meditation is a myth; desire does not sleep. Black vinyl LPs in shrinkwrapped jackets with photography and layout by Borges. Mastered by Pete Swanson, edition of 430

Ewers, Suki
Kind of Hazy
PS, UK Former member of Opal and Mazzy Star. After performing for several years with Anemone, a band once touted as the missing link in the country music/dream pop connection, Suki spent the last couple of years in the studio working with Joe Kennedy on a set of nine songs. These were eventually sent off to be mixed & masterd by Kramer. The result is hazy, bittersweet pop in the vein of Galaxie 500 & Felt. The songs are at once dreamy & enigmatic yet immediately accessible. Suki manages to evoke much of the same delicately pretty gloominess as Opal while adding her own serenely melodic warmth. "A female-fronted The Clientele with a slightly more American brand of melancholy." -Filter Magazine.

PS, US The Fitt out of Pittsburgh, PA have released their second EP and it is as powerful as a train derailment. 6 songs brutally smashed onto and into this 7". All of them grinding, crushing, and churning like a tornado of rock n roll. Pat's gravely voice keeps grating like an axe on a grinding wheel. Flaherty, Paul
Aria Nativa
PS, US "Aria Nativa" is more than PAUL FLAHERTY'S third solo saxophone album; it merges rhapsodic avant garde music, patriotic dream verse, and mortality into a frighteningly pure work of audio, visual and literary sledge. Recorded during a pair of 2007 performances, its four pieces capture lifeblood in stunning detail from foot stomps to gut hollers and crowd roars as Flaherty's free power blues dips into the well of wretchedness and raises with fists of mirth. It's the sorta record that splays naked the artist for all: equal parts wise ass and universal vision. From his early 1970s woodshedding through a dozen plus albums each with drum buddies Randall Colburne and Chris Corsano, and collaborators Bill Nace, Wally Shoup and Sunburned Man of the Hand, Flaherty remains a total wildcat - on and off the alto/tenor horns. For this LP his massive tonal craft is equally matched by Ken Hill's gorgeous cover shot of a snow blown grave and "No More America" - Ken DelPonte's epic poem that spans nearly five decades and fills the back jacket, framing the atmosphere the music was recorded under. Each 500 copies contain a download coupon for MP3 version of the album that includes a bonus track of "No More America" read by the author.

Fotheringay
Fotheringay 2
PS, UK This is what would have been -- and now IS -- the second release for UK folk-rock legends Fotheringay, including all members Sandy Denny, Pat Donaldson, Trevor Lucas, Gerry Conway, and Jerry Donahue. These are the original recordings from 1970. Fotheringay remain one of the great might-have-beens of British music. They lasted less than a year, and released just one album, but their disappearance robbed the early '70s scene of a group of musicians capable of taking folk-rock to new heights of subtlety and musicianship. Now, the nine songs on that debut album; assumed for almost four decades to be their sole testament, are joined by the eleven that would have constituted a follow-up. Sadly, they broke up during the recording sessions for their second album. Incredibly, all the tapes survived in various record company archives. Thirty-eight years later, the surviving members of the group have mixed all the material to finally complete this remarkable album. When originally released, the debut album went straight into the Top Twenty in both Melody Maker and NME, and is now an acknowledged classic recording of British folk-rock. It is very, very rare that musicians get the chance to complete a project begun 38 years earlier. The second Fotheringay album has been eagerly awaited by all fans of Sandy Denny, British folk-rock, and by pretty much everyone in general.

PS, US One of the most exciting bands from the UK. Last year's super limited 7-inch "Paris" was judged the single of the week in both the NME and The Guardian for its deft combination of clattering percussion and a blissed out, hum along hook. It's all the more impressive when you consider the band recorded this entirely themselves on a laptop.

Genghis Tron
Board Up the House Remixes Vol. 1
PS, US The inaugural album in the ambitious "Board Up The House Remixes" SERIES opens with ZOMBI'S Steve Moore expanding the very beginning of "Board Up The House" into a sprawling European film noir soundtrack; Jesu's Justin K Broadrick takes the schizophrenic grind of "Colony Collapse" and transforms it into a dirty booty-bass track just screaming for a Missy Elliott hook; Rob Crow incidentally pioneers Mariachi-core by adding some Spanish guitar and festive vocals to "Things Don't Look Good"; and Eluvium reimagines the 10-minute closer "Ergot" as an outer space funeral dirge for the 24th Century. Packaged in a jacket featuring "remixed" album art by Jon Beasley, this pressing is a limited edition of 1,000 copies on a special colored vinyl that corresponds to the artwork. Future volumes in this series will be released by Lovepump United, Anticon, Crucial Blast and Relapse Records.

Grubbs, David
Optimist Notes The Dusk
PS, US "A step into the void" is how Grubbs (GASTR DEL SOL) describes his first solo album since 2004. Here Grubb's presents five longish songs & one eleven-minute instrumental floor rumbler, and the album can't be said to fall in either a pop or experimental genre. Much like Gastr Del Sol's recordings, arrangements take their own sweet, otherworldly time to unfold, and you're likely to discover that the undertow is stronger than you reckoned & that you wind up a

Herrman, Bernard
Aldous Huxley's Brave New World
PS, UK Published in 1932, some 17 years before George Orwell's equally dystopian 1984, Brave New World was prompted by Aldous Huxley¹s visit to the United States and his shock at the all-embracing commercialization he encountered. Set in the 26th century, the book depicts a world in which the masses are socially engineered and subconsciously indoctrinated for their roles in society, and kept docile and content by a combination of drugs (Soma), promiscuous sex, synthesized Muzak and mindless entertainment (the Feelies). Solitary pursuits such as reading are discouraged in favor of group activities, while the nuclear family has been replaced by the Hatcheries and Conditioning Centres that control every aspect of the period between artificial conception and childhood. This extraordinary musical radio production of Huxley¹s masterpiece attracted a suitably stellar cast of performers including the author himself in the role of narrator and the great film composer Bernard Hermann. A titan of cinema now remembered for such undisputed masterpieces as Citizen Kane, Psycho and Taxi Driver. Here, his palette was necessarily constrained by budgetary considerations, but he nevertheless deployed his slender resources - organ and percussion instruments - with typical ingenuity. In the first part of the programme we hear eight cues of Bernard Herrmann¹s original score followed by the original radio production in it¹s entirety with Herrmann¹s music as broadcast by the CBS Radio Workshop in January and February. TRACKS: 1-9: Brave New World Original Score Composed and Conducted by Bernard Herrmann 10: Brave New World - Part One Narrated by Aldous Huxley Original Score Composed and Conducted by Bernard Herrmann 11: Brave New World - Part Two Narrated by Aldous Huxley Original Score Composed and Conducted by Bernard Herrmann

Mancini, Henry
The Versatile Henry Mancini
PS, UK Henry Mancini s first album, a languid and vastly superior piece of exotica initially released in 1957 as Driftwood and Dreams re-issued here for the first time on compact disc in both stereo and the original beautiful mono version. For these historic sessions, Mancini recruited the renowned Brazilian guitarist Laurindo Almeida, to bring a distinctly tropical feel that would have been beyond the reach of even the most seasoned American player and to add a crucial touch of the other-worldly, the soprano Loulie "Lulu" Jean Norman, whose wordless vocals would later achieve global recognition on the theme from Star Trek. Donald Fagen called Henry Mancini the "High Priest of Hollywood Cool", and this masterful album is full of stylish Mancini motifs that anticipate such future triumphs as Moon River, Baby Elephant Walk, The Days of Wine and Roses, The Pink Panther and The Party. High quality bonus material includes The Four Freshmen's exquisite recording Mancini s What s It Gonna Be, written for the film Rock, Pretty Baby, the rare Mancini single of instrumental material from the same movie, Hot Rod and Big Band Rock and Roll, and another Hank composition Cha Cha Cha for Gia from Four Girls in Town. Record In Red
PS, US MARMOSET'S "Record In Red" is full of apples and cherries. With this, their second full-length, Marmoset have released a near masterwork of pop pleasure. Indeed, the 13 songs on "Record In Red" vary widely in style and sound, ranging from the Church-like acoustic stylings of "Golden Cloak" and "Torn Cup, Fly Up Above", the FAITH-era Cure tone of "Walking Thru The Lake", the moody pop melodies resembling Richard Davies' work with the Moles, the haunting confessional of "December 4th", the epic dementia of "Summertime Is Easy", to the Kim Deal inspired "Frendamine". PS, US VINYL VERSION!!! The new album and the full-length instrumental companion piece, 'Strange Attractors', pressed on 180 gram wax. PITCHFORK: "They've pulled a Kid A by turning down Sean "Grasshopper" Mackowiak's guitars, breaking down lyrics into mantric incantations, pulling the drumsticks out of Jeff Mercel's hands, and immersing themselves in electronic programming (spurred by experiments with an image/music randomizer program) in an effort to make Mercury Rev, well, more mercurial... Mercury Rev
Snowflake Midnight (ON SALE)
PS, US Swirling atmospherics and mantra-like lyrics abound on Mercury Rev's newest work Snowflake Midnight. Recorded almost exclusively in the band's Catskills, N.Y. laboratory, Snowflake Midnight sees MR continue experiments with laser harps, ad-hoc computer programs and random note generators resulting in a record that moves with grace between avant garde and traditional pop sensibilities. Standout tracks "Butterfly's Wing" and "Senses on Fire" exhibit the emphasis on letting the music define itself, as free as possible from human interference. Zooming in at nearly any magnification, Snowflake Midnight appears to be a resplendent fractal folding in upon itself, into something continually new, unpredictable and spontaneous, and yet so subtly self-aware, that it never fails to resemble itself as a whole. FYI: The band will be gibving away a bonus instrumental album entitled Strange Attractors on their website beginning 9/30. MOJO MAGAZINE: "A snowflake; a raindrop; a butterfly's wing: such are the micro-details via which Mercury Rev get macro here. Michna
Magic Monday
PS, US Adrian Michna found his way as a DJ under his EGG FOO YOUNG alias, earning him an URB "Next 100" nod in the process. Production gigs for Bonde do Role & Diplo followed, allowing Michna to put his deftness at both the drum machine & the trombone to good use, creating tracks out of dense blankets of sound & texture. Apart from the tightly woven musical amalgam of hip-hop, booty & electro, it's the detailed process that makes Michna's debut album move. Perhaps the most exciting aspect of the album is its rich element of musicality; in an era when hip-hop tracks have devolved into two-note keyboard loops, songs like "Skunk Walk" live up to their name with full-bodied funk & live horns. When Ghostly owner, Sam Valenti IV, asked Adrian which samples to clear, Adrian replied, "What samples?"

Monkey
Journey to the West
PS, US Blur mainman Damon Albarn with fellow Gorillaz brainstormer Jamie Hewlett tackle a legendary Chinese legend and create a modern "rock" opera. PITCHFORK: "After two top-selling albums created under the guise of a cartoon band, artist and designer Jamie Hewlett and Blur's Damon Albarn followed Gorillaz with, no shit, Monkey. The simian in question is the lead character in Journey to the West, one of China's oldest and most endearing stories, a tale originally written in the late 16th century that's considered one of the country's four great novels. Oh and, with the help of director Checn Shi-Zeng, Albarn and Hewlett adapted it into a modern opera. On paper these ideas-- audacious, uncommercial, completely uncool-- should bomb. But Albarn has always had a conceptual bent to his projects, and after successfully acting as a conduit between African and Western music, heading a supergroup that actually worked, and the shock success of Gorillaz, it might be time to stop underestimating him."

Nelson, Willie
Stardust [expanded re-issue]
PS, US At the height of outlaw country, Willie Nelson pulled off perhaps the riskiest move of the entire bunch. He set aside originals, country, and folk and recorded Stardust, a collection of pop standards produced by Booker T Jones. Well, it's not entirely accurate to say that he put away country and folk, since these are highly idiosyncratic interpretations of "Georgia on My Mind," "All of Me," "Moonlight in Vermont," and "Don't Get Around Much Anymore," blending pop, country, jazz, and folk in equal measures. It's not that Willie makes these songs his own, it's that he reimagines these songs in a way that nobody else could, and with his trusty touring band, he makes these versions indelible. It may be strange to think that this album, containing no originals from one of America's greatest songwriters, is what made him a star, and it continues to be one of his most beloved records, but it's appropriate, actually. Stardust showcases Nelson's skills as a musician and his entire aesthetic -- where there is nothing separating classic American musical forms, it can all be played together -- perhaps better than any other album, which is why it was a sensation upon its release and grows stronger with each passing year. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

NRBQ
Scraps
PS, US The wildly eclectic New Rhythm & Blues Quintet, better known to its worldwide legion of adoring fans as NRBQ (or just the Q!), is the only band on the planet that can play rockabilly, bar-band blooze, Beatles sound-alikes and Sun Ra-style free jazz in the same set and remain standing. By the time keyboardist Terry Adams, vocalist Frank Gadler, bassist Joey Spampinato, drummer Tom Staley and fabulous new guitarist Al Anderson released Scraps, their wonderful second album in 1972, they had relocated from Florida to New Jersey-and, like their name says, they were actually a quintet for the only time in their career. From the infectious "Howard Johnston's Got His Ho-Jo Working" to the loveably understated "Magnet," Scraps is loaded with NRBQ classics that lived up to the eye-popping press garnered by their self-titled 1969 debut.

Ovo
Croce Via
PS, US A darker slant than their previous full length, OvO's guitars scrape & drums pound but the organic crunch & high fidelity of this release will convince you that this is music taken further & harder. An avant masterpiece, it takes cues from the tar covered hordes wearing jean jackets & introduces a very natural middle finger of wigginess. Stefania Pendretti's vocals soar for the sky & rest like a golden piece of corn in the steaming morass of dunt. Guitar undulates like a wriggling eel, with Bruno Dorella's drums providing crunching headburn.

Papa November
Book One/Azmaveth
PS, UK About Papa November The name Papa November comes from a now inactive short-wave radio numbers station that features the voice of a girl repeating the words Papa November between blasts of discordant noise, equally, blasts of short-wave noise, radio crackle and radio drones permeate Papa November's music. Papa November, as a musical project, was started by Stuart Tonge in 1997, who was inspired by a desire to create his own language in sound. Stuart set to work, enlisting the efforts of Katy Acquaye who wrote the lyrics, sang and co-produced most Papa November releases between 2001 and 2006. Papa November has released music on Static Caravan, Speedowax and Bearos records. Papa November currently concerns itself with creating soundtracks to imaginary dystopias. Papa November's album debut for First Fold is inspired by the apocryphal Book of Azmaveth. The story is divided into twelve parts over six chapters. In response Papa November created twelve instrumental pieces to complement the structure of the book. The music serves as a kind of dark soundtrack to the long forgotten dystopian world that Azmaveth inhabits.

Phantom Buffalo
Take To The Trees
PS, US "Well, its been a damn long time since we released their debut album Shishimumu back when they were called The Ponys, but we sure are happy there's finally a proper follow-up, even if it took six years to happen. If anything, the long wait says something to the greatness & humility of the band; never bending to commercial concerns, ego, hype, or changing trends & changing times. In fact, Take To The Trees picks up just about right where Shishimumu left off all those years back, another little nugget of timeless psychedelic pop perfection. Of course, there is a new level of maturity and depth to the songwriting here, but there's still plenty of slightly naive & youthful charm. And to be certain, the world these guys create is just as surreal now as its always been. Musically, things come together just right, with thick, swirling, chiming triple electric guitar textures, spot-on drumming, liquid but powerful bass, gurgling moog, acoustic strumming, accordion, and sweet soaring fuzz-tones. Vocals hover as high & sweet as ever, harmonizing, doubling, and layering heavenly. The mood of the album floats through drifting fragile melancholy, quirky pop, crunchy psychedelic rockers and anthemic rave-ups, often all within the same track. Beautifully recorded, but never over polished...just the way a great pop record should be. So forget all pretense, folks, maybe not freak folk enough for Kill Rock Stars ain't such a bad thing at all. Packaged in a mini LP style gatefold cover, with folded insert & woven Japanese inner sleeve. Edition of 1000."

Quinn, Donovan & The 13th Month
S/T
PS, US Donovan's steadily growing reputation as a first rate darkly romantic penman (thanks to contributions to The Skygreen Leopards & solo as Verdure) has culminated with his latest endeavor. Rather than aping or ducking genres, Quinn has crafted a bright spectrum of songs best described as 'American.' Xian folk, languid indie pop, VU cool, loner country & west coast psych are touchstones, with Quinn's singular lyrical abilities & taste for sun-baked song steadily at the fore. Ever the flower bed romantic, Quinn has - at the risk of over-simplification - written a classic "break-up record;" albeit filtered through surrealistic tenderness & riddled with red herrings & feelings of betrothal. Though not exactly lost in a sea of scarves, Quinn is indebted to the vulnerability, humor & bitterness present in the works of Ronnie Lane, Skip Spence, Nikki Sudden & Basement Tapes-era Dylan.

Real Tuesday Weld, The
The London Book of the Dead
PS, UK These were made for Cargo UK Collective stores only and are limited to 500 copies. Already ripping it up with rave reviews and radio on the other side of the Atlantic (New York Public Radio's JOHN SCHAFFER's ALBUM OF THE YEAR), The Real Tuesday Weld's first conventional album in the UK since their critical hit 'I Lucifer' (an Independent, Times and Telegraph album of the week) is an extraordinary sonic collage of electronic rhythms, spoken word, bluegrass, violins, woodwind, and harmonized crooner vocals. A further flowering of the band's trademark 'Antique Beat' sound - the album's unique combination of old shellac sounds vintage radio transmissions and glitchy electronics provide a setting for lyrical concerns of life, love, dreams and death. Future single "Last Words' is the signature song in the upcoming indie classic: 'Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist' starring 'Juno's' Michael Serra' and three of the videos made to accompany the album have already been given special features on Youtube. The limited special edition version of the album will contain a hardbound 40-page color book of extraordinary commissioned collages by the artist Catherine Anyango. Replacements, The
Please To Meet Me [remaster, expanded re-issue]
PS, US Their fifth full-length and second for a major label, Pleased To Meet Me was also the band's first following the official departure of guitarist Bob Stinson, part of the legendary founding line-up that also included lead singer and songwriter Paul Westerberg, Chris Mars (drums) and Tommy Stinson (bass). Rhino's newly REMASTERED & EXPANDED edition of this 1987 album classic features the original 11-song set plus 12 rare bonus tracks, half of them previously unreleased. The album was recorded in Memphis, TN with producer Jim Dickinson (whose association with Big Star forged the connection with the 'Mats). Memorable tracks include "Alex Chilton," "The Ledge," "I Don't Know," "Red Red Wine" and "Can't Hardly Wait." Among the dozen bonus rarities are a previously unreleased alternative version of "Alex Chilton" and previously unissued demos for "Valentine," "Bundle Up," "Empty As My Heart," "Time Is Killing Us" and "Kick It In." Also similarly re-issued: Sorry Ma..., Stink, Let It Be, Hootenanny, Tim, All Shook Down and Don't Tell A Soul.

Replacements, The
All Shook Down [remaster, expanded re-issue]
PS, US A stripped-down, largely acoustic set first released in 1990, was their last album for the label, and proved to be their final one as a band as well. While it features lead singer and songwriter Paul Westerberg still making music with his fellow founding members Chris Mars (drums) and Tommy Stinson (bass), the album is generally considered to be essentially Westerberg's inaugural solo effort. Rhino's new edition features the original 13-song set remastered plus 11 bonus tracks, including 8 previously unreleased rarities. Stand-out tracks include "Sadly Beautiful," "Merry Go Round" and the title track. Among the 11 bonus cuts are 8 previously unissued demos, including ones for "Sadly Beautiful," "Happy Town," "When It Began" and "One Wink At A Time." Also similarly re-issued: Sorry Ma..., Stink, Let It Be, Hootenanny, Tim, Please To Meet Me and Don't Tell A Soul.

Don't Tell A Soul [remaster, expanded re-issue]
PS, US The band's third album for Sire features three-quarters of the legendary founding line-up of lead singer and songwriter Paul Westerberg, Chris Mars (drums) and Tommy Stinson (bass) - Slim Dunlap replaces original guitarist Bob Stinson, who departed after 1985's Tim. Rhino's new edition of this 1989 classic - which Rolling Stone called "an audacious album"- features the original 11-song set remastered plus 8 bonus tracks, including three previously unreleased rarities. Highlights include "I'll Be You," a #1 Billboard modern rock track and the band's first single to chart on the Hot 100, along with album opener "Talent Show," "Achin' To Be" and "Back To Back." Among the 8 bonus tracks are "Date To Church" with Tom Waits and previously unissued finds including a demo for "Talent Show" and an alternate mix of "We'll Inherit The Earth." Tim [remaster, expanded re-issue]
PS, US After emerging from and defining the Minneapolis music scene of the early 1980s and issuing a series of seminal releases on Twin/Tone, The Replacements signed to Sire Records mid-decade. The first of their four now-classic full-lengths for the label, TIM was also the band's last album fueled by the legendary original line-up of lead singer and songwriter Paul Westerberg, Chris Mars (drums) and brothers Bob and Tommy Stinson (guitar and bass, respectively). Rhino's newly edition of this 1985 tour de force features the original 11-song set remastered plus 6 previously unreleased bonus tracks. Produced by original Ramones drummer Tommy Erdelyi, TIM is #136 on Rolling Stone's list of the "500 Greatest Albums Of All Time". Highlights include "Bastards Of Young," "Hold My Life," "Kiss Me On The Bus" and "Left Of The Dial." Previously unissued bonus rarities include three tracks recorded at a 1985 session with Westerberg's idol, Alex Chilton, among them an electric outtake of "Can't Hardly Wait." Richter, Max
24 Postcards in Full Colour
PS, US With his fourth album, Berlin-based MAX RICHTER further cements his status as one of the leading lights of modern composition. "24 Postcards In Full Colour" is a dazzling conceptual exercise of great beauty and emotional resonance. Each of the album's 24 tracks is a classically-composed ringtone, an evocative miniature whose theme, though fully developed, hints at a larger piece; thus Richter explores the fugitive nature of memory through reprises and repetition throughout this intriguing album. With a sonic pallette consisting of string quintet, solo piano, 16-track 2-inch tape, transistors, found shortwave radio, vinyl clicks, dust, scratches and rumble, and acoustic guitars, Richter's latest effort is both beautifully detailed and sonically rich.

Rokes, The
Let's Live For Today: The Rokes In English 1966-68
PS, UK The Rokes were Brits who went to Italy in 1963 and became one of the biggest bands in the land for the rest of the decade. They chalked up numerous Italian language hits and recorded four albums as well as becoming an enormous live draw and TV favorites. However, scattered across those albums were a number of English language songs that somehow came off sounding like a Euro-tinged blend of The Beatles, Hollies, Kinks and Pretty Things. In 67, The Rokes released the first English language version of Let s Live For Today, a song they d already cut in Italian. It went on to become a huge US hit in the hands of The Grass Roots and was covered by scores of bands. Rollicking beat gems like No No No and Ride On slowly morphed into more sophisticated fare such as the sitar-drenched Ripe Apples and the sinister psychedelic rocker When The Wind Arises , both of which were released in the UK in a belated attempt to break them here. Here, for the first time on CD, are virtually all of The Rokes English language recordings from 1966 to 1968. ** Re-mastered by Nick Robbins in the usual exemplary style! ** In-depth liner notes by 60s beat fiend Stefan Granados and features lots of rare photos and memorabilia! A must for all lovers of 60s beat, pop and psych.

PS, US Tracy's helpful reminder on the opening track from her latest album of smart, pointed pop is a direct & economic assertion backed by sharp musicianship & just the right amount of reverb. Cigarettes & Smoke Machines, is Shedd's most accomplished record in a career that has now spanned four full-lengths. A fan of artists that drape their vocals in various shrouds (My Bloody Valentine, Cocteau Twins, The Jesus & Mary Chain), Tracy decided that she never really wanted her vocals up front, an edict that permeated her previous recordings. Now, Shedd lets go & we benefit from vocal performances that establish the arresting emotional core of her latest record.
