Parasol New Arrivals • January 30, 2007

Hey Everyone,

I don’t know how this happened, but the best record of 2006 flew under my radar. How is it that I missed out on “Trials of Van Occupanther” by Midlake?! I’m sure by now that this record is permanently etched in the minds of my co-workers from the nearly continuous rotation in the Parasol CD changer over the last few days. It’s like Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumors” colliding with Ron Sexsmith’s “S/T” album. If you haven’t already, you really should pick up this record.

Also on the shortlist this week is a book by our pal, Ric Menck. One of the real cool 33 1/3 series by Continuum, The Byrds: Notorious Byrd Brothers is a must get for fans of The Byrds and or Menck. We have the entire series of 33 1/3 books for sale, so dig in because there are plenty of other great books from this series to choose from!

The heavy rotation list continues with the new one from Frida Hyvonen entitled Music From The Dance Performance 'Pudel' which Jim has featured as his “pick” this week, and the V/A: Soft Sounds for Gentle People series.

Jim also wanted us to holla atcha about the new vinyl page he has created and will even occasionally update for all you vinyl collector and conservationists, fanatics and fetishists. And he notes we have finally sorted out a decent price for the expanded domestic version of Peter Bjorn And John’s latest masterpiece, Writer’s Block, which comes with a bonus CD, due next Tuesday. We say latest masterpiece because we’re still chuffed about their previous album, Falling Out, which we released back in 2005, and which has sold more in the last few months than in the entire year previous! As always there are many new releases to dig through in today’s update.

Acid King
III
PS, US ILegendary bay area doom band. Finally on vinyl! Produced with the help of San Fransico's legendary engineer Billy Ander-son, this is the album that Lori & Co. were born to make. Filled with thundering low end & fat ass riffs AK-III will redefine the definition of the word heavy for years to come. It?s thick & viscous, pooling together in a meaty muck. AK-III?s one of those albums that re-fuses to let go of your subconscious.

Airport Girl
Slow Light
PS, UK Some 5 years after their debut album had the indie kids swooning in jangle-pop ecstasy, Airport Girl return with a radically altered sound, a glistening downbeat country-pop hybrid that is sure to win them many new admirers. From the world-weary plea of the piano-led "Hold Me Through The Night" to the heartbreaking country sigh of "I've Seen Mexico" a sense of regret pervades the album, none more so than on the desperate, hurt-racked "How Long Can This Go On?". More upbeat are the jazz-tinged "Don't Let Me Down Again" and "The Weather Song", it's "Sketches Of Spain" intro belying its true nostalgic nature, while "Show Me The Way", as pure a declaration of love as one could wish for, could have come straight from the Go-Betweens' masterpiece "16 Lovers Lane". Throughout there is judicious use of violin, cello, trumpet, harmonica and melodica to subtly create moods and textures within the songs, along with a willingness to experiment. The kids at the club may be momentarily fazed by Airport Girl's new direction, but ultimately any listener will be rewarded by an album with great musical and emotional depth. Airport Girl is a six-piece from Nottingham, formed in 1997 by singer-songwriter Rob Price. Their influences range from the Scottish pop sounds of The Pastels and Belle and Sebastian to the American flavors of The Modern Lovers and Pavement. They've been played on BBC Radio One by Steve Lamacq, the late great John Peel, and by John Kennedy on XFM.

Alkaline Trio
Remains [CD+DVD]
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "If there's something Alkaline Trio loves more than red, black and drinking their way through darkness and heartache, it's recording songs for compilations, B-sides and split albums. So it's only fitting that seven years after their self-titled singles collection, it would be necessary for the Trio to release another album to round various songs up into one tidy package for maximum consumption. In addition to multiple compilation appearances, their half to splits with Hot Water Music and One Man Army are here -- including the excellent cover of the former's "Rooftops" -- along with a few live cuts. Remains is absolutely essential for fans, not just for the completion factor for personal collections, but because most all of the songs here are up there with the band's best. Seriously, this is good stuff. "Hell Yes" leads things off with mischievous defiance; from cuts like "My Standard Break from Life," "Queen of Pain" and "We Can Never Break Up" to additional covers (The Damned's "Wait for the Blackout" and Berlin's "Metro") this record has no time for filler... The DVD includes five music videos ("Stupid Kid," "We've Had Enough," "Time to Waste," "Mercy Me" and "Burn") and random tour footage... Hardly a bunch of tossed away afterthoughts, Remains is an incredibly solid collection of songs that any fan would be foolish to miss. (Corey Apar)

Ambarchi, Oren
Stacte Motor
PS, US OREN AMBARCHI'S "Stacte Motors", is the most recent addition to the WESTERN VINYL portrait series. Additionally, these pieces continue the Stacte series started in 1998 with Ambarchi's first self-released solo recordings. Similar to the 4 previous editions of the series, which explored one idea at length, "Stacte Motors" is an experiment in exciting instruments with a spinning motor with strings attached. The resulting recordings are metallic walls of minimalist drones, both fearless and dreamy.

Antonio Carlos Jobim And Luiz Floriano Bonfa
S/T
PS, UK Antonio Carlos (Tom) Jobim is the biggest name in Brazilian music. His composition 'The Girl from Ipanema' with 'Yesterday' are the most popular song of all time and it is THE number that defines Bossa Nova (though Jobim wrote two dozen other songs that are intrinsic to the genre). Jobim and the virtuoso Brazilian guitarist Luiz Bonfa were (with Joao Gilberto) the architects of Bossa Nova; overseeing the transition of traditional samba song to the new form and our collection covers those years of transition. Our set includes Jobim songs played by Bonfa and vice versa. It includes vintage domestic hits written either by Jobim or by both men and as a major feature also includes the entire score of the 1956 'Orpheus of the Carnival' stage play (written by Tom Jobim and the poet Vinicius de Morais). This was the blueprint for the famous film 'Black Orpheus' which two years later swept all before it at the Cannes Film festival and put Bossa Nova on the world map. Our set captures the flavour of fifties Brazil, when in arts and culture and sport the country was really emerging. Jobim and Bonfa are popular throughout the world. Much of the later work of both men has long attained classic status and is in print (eg Jobim's number 1 USA LP with Frank Sinatra). Both men are major names in America and Japan. Bossa Nova has been given further impetus with the re-discovery of Tropicalia and period Brazilian music is now extremely prominent, in Britain and Europe especially. Any student of Brazilian music will appreciate this album.

Aphrodisiacs, The
In the Name of the Father
PS, JAPAN Scottish experimental trio have been around since 2002 when they reportedly sounded like Mogwai with a Casio keyboard thrown in for good measure...Since then, the band released the mini album "This Is A Campaign," the title track of which landed in John Peel's 2002 festive fifty and which landed the band a Peel Session to boot. "In the Name of the Father" is The Aphrodisiacs' first full-length album and features 6 remastered tracks from the minialbum plus 6 brand new tracks recorded in 2006. "The Scottish trio use soothing vocals to lure you into their dark and eerie electro rock world where tense guitars suddenly explode over insistent clipped beats, and it's all frighteningly catchy and incredibly good. New Order, Depeche Mode and The Cure references abound on the more upbeat tracks, the slower efforts warmly reminiscent of Death Cab For Cutie, making This is a Campaign a sparse and utterly beguiling slice of disco music for the quietly deranged." At Swim Two Birds
Returning to the Scene of the Crime...
PS, SPAIN CD DIGIPACK + 8 page booklet. Returning to the scene of the crime is the new album by AT SWIM TWO BIRDS, the solo project of Roger Quigley - singer of the acclaimed duo from Manchester The Montgolfier Brothers and undoubtedly one of the biggest talents in the English music scene. AT SWIM TWO BIRDS shocks with the very stillness of the music: undulating guitar lines with a hint of the sound of pubs and fairgrounds, moodchanging music full of deep beauty. And although there is a certain similarity to the sound created by The Durutti Column and Tindersticks, for AT SWIM TWO BIRDS it is the lyrics which play the key role. Quigley spends time in the twilight world of corner pubs and cafes, with those who are lonely or depressed, those who love each other but are lost. His words touch the heart because they are about those trifles that make sense of our lives, that are common to everyone. AT SWIM TWO BIRDS' music encapsulates the strange pleasure that comes from contemplating a drama, understanding it and sharing it. Perhaps if David Lynch had filmed "The Straight Story" in England, he would have chosen the music of AT SWIM TWO BIRDS' as his soundtrack. "Quigley lies under the snow, as if he feels there is a silky warmth before the last goodbye ..." Les Inrockuptibles. "We knew that from the immese talent of Quigley we could only expect yet another masterpiece, another cleasing of the soul, but before such beauty, one cannot stop wondering: do we really deserve it?" (Rockdelux, June 2003). "With his pride in the working class and the common people he offers these delicious bucolic nuances for those who are still able to stop, contemplate and listen ..." (Mondosonoro, July-August 2003).

Bardot, Brigitte
And God Created Woman
PS, UK 'And God Created Woman' is the soundtrack to the notorious 1956 film that made Brigitte Bardot the sex symbol of her generation and propelled her to International stardom. It was condemned by the Church and created scandal everywhere. Bardot's then husband and film director Roger Vadim - 'Barbarella', was quick to capitalise. It made a fortune and changed the face of cinema. Jane Fonda called it "the first cinematic blow for women's liberation" and as a landmark in French cinematic culture is considered the film that ushered in the 'New Wave'. The jazzy/mambo score by Paul Misraki ('Alphaville') creates the appropriate steamy atmosphere and in the first half of the programme Brigitte Bardot reads selections from the script in French.

Beghtol, LD
Magnetic Fields: 69 Love Songs (33 1/3 Paperback Book)
PS, US A fully illustrated oral history of the Magnetic Fields' 1999 triple album, 69 Love Songs - an album that was afforded "classic" status by many almost as soon as it was released. LD Beghtol's book is chatty, incestuous, funny, dark, digressive, sexy, maddening, and delightful in equal measures. It documents a vital and influential scene from the inside, involving ukuleles and tears, citations and footnotes, analogue drum machines, and floods of cognac. Oh, and a crossword puzzle too. The centre of the book is the secret history of these tuneful, acerbic, and sometimes heartbreaking songs of old love, new love, lost love, punk rock love, gay love, straight love, experimental music love, true love, blue love, and the utter lack of love that fill the album - as told by participants, fans, imitators, naysayers, and others. Also included are a lexicon of words culled from the album's lyrics, recording details, performance notes from the full album shows in New York, Boston and London, plus rare and unpublished images, personal memorabilia, and much much more. Authors - LD Beghtol: LD Beghtol has written extensively about pop music, books, and the visual arts in Time Out New York, The Advocate, and the Village Voice. He has released half a dozen albums under several guises, and was a performer on 69 Love Songs.

Bikeride
The Kiss (ON SALE)
PS, US Praised by Uncut, MOJO, Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, CMJ, the L.A. Times, and many other publications, Bikeride pedals along with their fifth long player, The Kiss - their first in over four years. The Kiss takes off where 2002's Morning Macumba last left us, still showcasing Bikeride's knack for adventure and exotica. Just as many of the songs on Morning Macumba, were written abroad in Brazil and Peru, the music on The Kiss was written while traveling around the world. The songs were simmered in indigenous native spices, put through the Bicycle Rider pop filter, and then spit out as only Bikeride can do. But please don't be confused. Bikeride, the band that put red, white, and blue, on the map years before 9/11, remains dedicated to Americana and the everlasting pop song. Listen to the countrified "A Dancer's Feet Are Not So Neat" or the bubblegum pop of "She's Radioactive!" Compared to bands as disparate as The Beatles, Pixies, Beck and Earth Wind & Fire, Bikeride tackles just about every musical genre with fun and precision. The new sound is not just American, but American Gothic. Bikeride has embraced history. No, not the 15+ years they've been around, but the days of yore. Listen to "There's Something Odd About Elizabeth". It's Victorian, spooky, dreamy, and just might make you beseech Bikeride to play your funeral. Listen to "Hole in My Eye". It'll make you swing from a sail, drink Rum, and put on a blouse. (It's that Pirate-y!) Then there's "Podiaphobia"- an epic five minutes of prig-rock set amid maidens and castles- part Monty Python, part Lord of the Rings. Sure to be a Renaissance Fair favorite. Yes, they've gotten darker but they haven't abandoned their sunny California roots. Listen to "Your Lips and You", the first single off The Kiss, and you'll see that Bikeride remains in top-pop-form. It's a Revolver-esque sound collage where East meets West in an explosion of strings and Santoors. Also, check out "The Mystery of Magnet Power" and you'll see how only Bikeride can fuse influences as dissimilar as Bowie and the musical Annie. If you've been hungry for fresh Bikeride, this new record will appease your appetite. It's hard to resist and soft as a Kiss.

Biosphere
Cirque
PS, US REISSUE, originally released in 2000. Quite unlike any other, Geir Jenssen's so-called "Arctic Sound" transforms the space in which it is played. This music is an intimate reflection of the space & climate of his Arctic base in Tromsö, Norway, but made universal. Adjectives like "glacial" & "remote" do no justice to the intense emotion of the music. Layers of detail reveal themselves as you listen & appreciate the convergences deep w/in the music, between classical & pop, the soundtrack & its voiceover.

Boats
Tomorrow Time
PS, UK The well-practiced UK duo of Andrew Hargreaves and Craig Tattersall (The Remote Viewer, ex-Hood) are now up to their third album and have possibly come up with their most defined statement yet. After conquering the mighty piano on their homespun and beautiful We Made It For You, the two have now made the ultimate Christmas card with Tomorrow Time. At least, it's the Christmas card you wish you could send; with titles such as "You're an Idiot" and "A Sincere Fuck You," it's a far cry from garden-bound robins and snowy idylls. However The Boats have not injected their loving music with this harsh sentiment: you'll be pleased to know that they're as warm and delicate as ever and are joined by vocalists Chris Stewart and Elaine Reynolds who aid in the band's quest to weave the most pleasing micro-pop yet borne on our fair earth. "May Our Enemies Never Find Happiness" is a sterling example of this sentiment, with Stewart's silken vocals punctuated by Tattersall and Hargreaves' endearing percussive glitches and frosty melodies blending the two elements together seamlessly. Taking cues from the extended Moteer family of Hood, Clickits, Empress and of course, The Remote Viewer, these tracks sink instantly into the lore of their self-created genre. Elsewhere, Reynolds can be heard murmuring seductively on the heartbreaking "If You Leave Me, Can I Come Too?" On Tomorrow Time we see a band who have successfully moved their style forward rather than repeat themselves, experimenting with their own form and their own preference, and in doing so have come up with another endearing and expertly-produced addition to their catalog. As the nights get darker and the sky threatens to shower us with snow once more, there seems no better time for Tattersall and Hargreaves' grand vision. Chop some logs for the fire, curl up with a loved one, and let The Boats sail into your dreams.

Born Heller

PS, UK Limited LP version of this album, previously released on CD by Locust. Numbered edition of 550. "Born Heller are the folk duo of Josephine Foster & Jason Ajemian. They beautifully capture the traditions of both American and English folk, with Josephine's hushed fragile vocals accompanied by sparse melodic guitar lines and Jason's resonant bass sounds. Ajemian plays in groups like Triage, Dragons 1976, and with reedist Matt Bauder. While Foster may be familiar to record buyers for her own solo recordings and others with the Supposed, her psych rock outings. Braasch, Jonas
Global Reflections
PS, US The core of the project "Global Reflections" is a collection of Binaural Soundscapes which were recorded between the years of '98 & '06. They are presented on the tracks of this CD. What is fascinating the most about these pieces is nature's ability to align independent events to form interesting patterns. For this, Braasch took the standpoint of the observer; his credits are merely due to choosing the time & place of the recording. Consequently, the effect is often similar to aleatoric works of music. All even tracks contain pieces of his own work. J. B. is a soprano saxophonist, improviser/composer, acoustician & a dedicated collector of binaural soundscapes. He grew up in the Ruhr Area, Germany's cultural melting pot, & Pusan, South Korea. His saxophone style expands the traditional repertoire [in both Classical Music & Jazz idioms] by incorporating various non-western elements, as well as original extended techniques.

Brooks, Daphne A.
Jeff Buckley: Grace (33 1/3 Paperback Book)
PS, US The power and influence of Grace increases with each passing year. Here, Daphne Brooks traces Jeff Buckley's fascinating musical development through the earliest stages of his career, up to the release of the album. With access to rare archival material, Brooks illustrates Buckley's passion for life and hunger for musical knowledge, and shows just why he was such a crucial figure in the American music scene of the 1990s. EXCERPT: Jeff Buckley was piecing together a contemporary popular music history for himself that was steeped in the magic of singing. He was busy hearing how Dylan channeled Billie Holiday in Blonde On Blonde and how Robert Plant was doing his best to sound like Janis Joplin on early Led Zeppelin recordings. He was thinking about doo-wop and opera and Elton John and working at developing a way to harness the power of the voice...In the process, he was re-defining punk and grunge "attitude" itself by rejecting the ambivalent sexual undercurrents of those movements, as well as Led Zeppelin's canonical "cock rock" kingdom that he'd grown up adoring. He was forging a one-man revolution set to the rhythms of New York City and beyond. And he was on the brink of recording his elegant battle in song for the world to hear. Authors - Daphne A. Brooks: Daphne A. Brooks is Assistant Professor in the Department of English and African-American Studies at Princeton University, where she teaches courses on African-American literature and culture, performance studies, critical gender studies, and popular music culture.

Brothers Martin, The
S-T
PS, US The Brothers Martin is, appropriately enough, the brothers Ronnie and Jason Martin, two of the most prolific and consistently great songwriters making music today. The Martins are better known for their individual bands Joy Electric (Ronnie's synth-experimental-pure-analog-pop) and Starflyer 59 (Jason's indie-guitar-pop) and have over 20 releases between them. People may, or may not, know that the brothers began their musical journey as the obscure electro-pop duo Dance House Children back in 1990. It is precisely because of what happened in 1990 and, thus, after 1990 that The Brothers Martin project came to fruition.

Burroughs, William
Thee Films
PS, UK Following the success of their first DVD release "The Final Academy Documents" (CRDVD13), Cherry Red Records are delighted to announce the release of their follow-up DVD featuring one of the cultural icons of all time - William S. Burroughs. When writer William S Burroughs and artist Brion Gysin met Anthony Balch at the Beat Hotel in Paris at the start of the sixties they knew they had the ideal person to assist them in translating the ideas they had explored in experimental art forms to film. Balch began his moviemaking career collaborating with Burroughs on two shorts 'Towers Open Fire' and 'The Cut Ups'. The former is a relatively straightforward attempt to capture the essence of Burroughs writing on film, utilising key themes and situations featured in his books. The latter is an attempt to cinematically represent the art form. To achieve this each scene was filmed and edited in its entirety before the cut up method was applied - physically cutting the movie into foot long lengths and splicing them together randomly. Following the death of Anthony Balch in 1980 the films remain untouched and virtually forgotten at his home until the intervention of Psychic TV's Genesis P.Orridge, who salvaged and archived them. This unique collection comprises all the films made during that lengthy period of collaboration between Burroughs, Gysin, and Balch. In addition to the finished works the video includes a 50 minute film called 'Ghosts at No. 9' which uses cut-ups of film and superimpositions, material from the extensive archive of Psychic TV and to which Orridge added the distinctive soundtrack - making "Thee Films" a unique and desirable addition to the collection of all Burroughs fans. William Buys A Parrot / Towers Open Fire / The Cut-Ups / Bill & Tony / Ghosts At No. 9.

In 2002, their second album, "Walking With Thee" earned them a Grammy nomination. Described by NME as "a stunning return to form", this release sees the band work again with Gareth Jones (Interpol, Nick Cave, Depeche Mode). Cooper, Kim
Neutral Milk Hotel: In The Aeroplane Over The Sea (33 1/3 Paperback Book)
PS, US Of all the recordings to emerge from the Athens-via-Denver collective called Elephant 6, Neutral Milk Hotel's second album is the one that has worked its way under the most skins. Magnet magazine named it the best album of the 1990s, and Creative Loafing recently devoted a cover story to one fan's quest to understand why band leader Jeff Mangum dropped out of sight soon after Aeroplane's release. The record sells steadily to an audience that finds it through word of mouth. Weird, beautiful, absorbing, difficult, In The Aeroplane Over the Sea is a surrealist text loosely based on the life, suffering and reincarnation of Anne Frank, with guest appearances from a pair of Siamese twins menaced by the cold and carnivores, a two-headed boy bobbing in a jar, anthropomorphic vegetables and a variety of immature erotic horrors. Mangum sings his dreamlike narratives with a dreamer's intensity, his creaky, off key voice occasionally breaking as he struggles to complete each dense couplet. The music is like nothing else in the 90s indie underground: a psychedelic brass band, its members self-taught, forging polychromatic washes of mood and tribute. The songs stick to one narrow key, the images repeat and circle back, and to listen is to be absorbed into a singular, heart-rending vision. Authors - Kim Cooper: Kim Cooper is the publisher and editor of Scram, an occasional journal of unpopular culture dedicated to celebrating unjustly neglected artists in the worlds of music, literature, film/TV, comics and bohemia. She is the co-editor of Bubblegum Music is the Naked Truth, and also of the acclaimed Lost in the Grooves: Scram's Capricious Guide to the Music You Missed, (Routledge, 2004). She lives in Los Angeles. Reviews:'Cooper has managed to write the best music book that I've read so far... Awe alongside simple, direct speech. It's a delicate balance, that Cooper's excellent writing manages to preserve throughout the whole book...And this book doesn't only give information and wrap this exemplary album with an excellent text, it also gives me, and the rest of the prisoners of Jeff Mangum's scorched and wounded world, the excuse and the opportunity to climb on the rooftops and shout: 'For crying out loud, people, you better get to know this album now, before the aeroplane over the sea crashes exactly on that island with the place for only one record.'' ~ Guy Hajaj, Haoneg.com, 2006

Crow, Rob
Living Well
PS, US Somewhere between the breakneck touring to support PINBACK'S breakthrough TOUCH AND GO debut, "Summer in Abaddon", and the release of THE LADIES' debut album (his collaboration with ZACH HILL of HELLA/TEAM SLEEP), the impossibly prolific ROB CROW had an epiphany: SLOW DOWN. Not coincidentally, this revelation occurred shortly after the birth of his first child (named Robertdale Crow III, of course). Crow's time at home was suddenly more important than ever. His family is all over "Living Well", his third solo album: in the album title, the artwork (layered with dozens of family photos), and the intensely personal lyrics which document Crow's courtship with his wife, their marriage, and the subsequent birth of their first child. Not only is "Living Well" Crow's finest solo album by a country mile, it also transcends many of Pinback's most canonic moments. It has the hooks and heart that he is famous for, with a refined focus not seen in Crow's other projects.

Curtains
Calamity
PS, US Guest appearances by NEDELLE & JOHN RINGHOFER aka HALF HANDED CLOUD. Ex-member of Deerhoof & Natural Dreamers. The cryptic musical logic of "Calamity" might be recognizable from Cohen's past projects (both DEERHOOF and NATURAL DREAMERS), but this record is brimming over with what was only hinted at before. The singing and lyrics have at last brought THE CURTAINS vision into a clear and recognizable focus. The enigmatic mood and seemingly unfounded optimism of The Curtains' music have never been so sharply contrasted, and the sounds and playing ("Calamity" is self-produced and almost entirely performed by Chris) have never been so uncompromisingly personal and eccentric. Casually veering from melodic pop ballads ("Go Lucky" and "Old Scott Rd." ) to unclassifiable stylistic mish-mashes ("Invisible String" and "Calamity") to unabashed bubble-gum and garage punk ("Green Water" and "Fell On a Rock") to mysterious and brooding art-song ("Roscomare"), "Calamity" continues the Curtains' project of poker-faced genre disobedience. But this time Chris's singing and newly discovered interest in song form has pushed to the Curtains music to a new level of immediacy - on "Calamity" The Curtains have become what they've always hinted that they really were and in fact, it's almost a whole new band.

Davis, Erik
Led Zeppelin: IV (33 1/3 Paperback Book)
PS, US In this wickedly entertaining and thoroughly informed homage to one of rock music's towering pinnacles, Erik Davis investigates the magic-black or otherwise-that surrounds this album. Carefully peeling the layers from each song, Davis reveals their dark and often mystical roots-and leaves the reader to decide whether [FOUR SYMBOLS] is some form of occult induction or just an inspired, brilliantly played rock album. Excerpt: Stripping Led Zeppelin's famous name off the fourth record was an almost petulant attempt to let their Great Work symbolically stand on its own two feet. But the wordless jacket also lent the album charisma. Fans hunted for hidden meanings, or, in failing to find them, sensed a strange reflection of their own mute refusal to communicate with the outside world. This helped to create one of the supreme paradoxes of rock history: an esoteric megahit, a blockbuster arcanum. Stripped of words and numbers, the album no longer referred to anything but itself: a concrete talisman that drew you into its world, into the frame. All the stopgap titles we throw at the thing are lame: Led Zeppelin IV, [Untitled], Runes, Zoso, Four Symbols. In an almost Lovecraftian sense, the album was nameless, a thing from beyond, charged with manna. And yet this uncanny fetish was about as easy to buy as a jockstrap. Authors - Erik Davis: Erik Davis has been writing about music, subcultures, and technoculture for fifteen years. His cult book Techgnosis: Myth, Magic, and Mysticism in the Age of Information (1998), was translated in 5 languages and is being republished with a new introduction by Serpents Tail. He is a regular contributor to Wired, and lives in San Francisco. Reviews: "The most intellectually inspired and flat-out fun of Continuum's ongoing 33 1/3 series of pocketbook album appreciations, critic Davis's adventurous treatise decodes every magikal property embedded within rock's most geeked-on masterpiece."- Blender

Der Tpk
Harmful Emotions
PS, US DER TPK is the charming acronym for DER TEENAGE PANZER KORPS, and anyone who can't appreciate the imagery of a pipsqueak quartet of fuzzy, distorted youth, drenched in DIY testosterone, rumbling out from sewers and into the street, just hasn't been vibing on the correct History Channel. Based outta parts unknown (Germany? California? Is there a difference?), Der TPK gnash and gnarl through the charred landscape of the underground like a small battalion of Tiger tanks blasting across the steppes of the Ukraine. Their sonic attack at times recalls the anxious throb of Mars in their prime, but suddenly it shifts and you could swear you were locked in battle with-uh, listening to, that is-the early discordant rumble of Savage Republic. These four youths-BUNKER WOLF, CATHOLIC PAT, BOY TRUE and EDMUND XAVIER-understand they are channeling a vortex of sound, circa '79-'81. That's where they wanna be. The walls shake, the floor crawls. Hey, whatta place! And really, how could comparisons to Mars and Savage Republic ever be a bad thing? Has Siltbreeze ever lied to you? Limited, one-time-only vinyl edition. Dilloway, Aaron
Beggar Master
PS, US CD issue of first full-length LP by ex-Wolf Eyes member Aaron Dilloway. Recorded in Kirtipur, Nepal, March 2005. Originally released on LP limited to 300 copies. Tape manipulations, feedback, crude field recordings, & Nepali dirt. "Side 'Beggar Master' is like a video game of a brick wall chasing a 300 pound wobble legged mosquito. High feedback intercepted by sliding horizontal pile of bricks. Beating thud heart with some open holes in the side corresponding to sludge lake bug liberation. Pumping muscle disorders team up with mud and dirt bubble bath to make larvae spawn engine. Whir and blur background mechanical swamp. The end of the 'Beggar' side cuts off immediately just as you think the whole mess of introduced sound is going to rise up and start knocking down buildings. You can hear the displaced air of the kong leg lifting and zip! The 'Prayer Flush' side starts off as a homage to prehistoric Raptors vs. the Soccer Thugs of Britain. Whistles, bites on the ass, distorted knee scrapes highlight various parts of the first few mins of screaming melee. This fades into some drawn out electro fry. The sound that no living being can stand up to: deep long forked tongue death. Hum of the end. Then the New Blockaders on the Thalid-O-Kid interrupt to make a canal of tumbling pile of canned garbage flowing into a heightened snow storm of singing trident lava-needled record players. Welcome here all trashit, submit your excessive horrible souls to our torture disparagement! If you listen close enough you might be able to hear the behemoth garbage truck rolling up everything into a black hole rear compartment. Background Killoway with his garbage can lid crook pointing the way into vortex nothing. Canned fuzz drops dead after the tidal bleach hand eliminates all movement. If you've heard it all from the Christians how scary the sounds of hell will be, you can hear from Killoway's field recording how your garbage is being treated once it's putrid soul is released. Definitely a mood soundtrack for oblivionic conoise-suers with plans to ride the flume to hell." -- Bonnie Banks, Brutal Sound Effects.

Doiron, Julie
Woke Myself Up
PS, US On JULIE DOIRON'S first album of new material in over two years, she addresses in her signature intimate songwriting style both the heights and the fallout in a way that forces the listener to reexamine their own loves. The first half of "Woke Myself Up" details the joy and awe that her family has given her. Immediately, one knows that her unabashed and unaffected lyrics are coming from a woman truly moved. The second half sees Julie making mistakes, blowing second chances, and coming to terms with the sad truth that one cannot live up to expectations set by herself or those she loves. The harrowing untitled final track (recorded and added to the album at the eleventh hour by Doiron) may very well be the most affecting of Doiron's performances ever committed to tape. Also important to the recording of this album was a reunion of sorts with her musical family. Founding ERIC'S TRIP bandmate RICK WHITE produced and played on the entire album, and a handful of the songs contain the entire original Eric's Trip band nucleus that took the Canadian indie underground by storm 15 years ago. Working with an old friend and collaborator like White was key to this album's intensely vulnerable and emotionally raw tone. What's captured is timeless and universal, in the same way as CAT POWER'S "Moon Pix", LEONARD COHEN'S "Songs of Love And Hate", and JONI MITCHELL'S "Blue".

Dougan, John
The Who: The Who Sell Out (33 1/3 Paperback Book)
PS, US Fascinating study of The Who's pop art masterpiece and British pirate radio of the 1960s. Released in the U.S. in January 1968, The Who Sell Out was, according to critic Dave Marsh, a complete backfire. . .the album sold well, but not spectacularly [and was] ultimately a nostalgic in-joke: Who but a pop intellectual could appreciate such a thing? Further rarifying its in-joke status was its unapologetic Englishness; 13 tracks stitched together in a mock pirate radio broadcast, without a DJ, with cool, anglocentric commercials to boot. In the 36 years since its release, Sell Out, though still not the best selling release in The Who's catalog, has been embraced by a growing number of fans who regard it as the band's best work; one of the few recordings of the late 1960s that best represents the ambitious aesthetic possibilities of the concept album; without becoming mired in a bog of smug, self-aggrandizing, high art aspirations. Sell Out, powerfully and ecstatically, articulates the nexus of pop music and pop culture. As much as it is an expression of the band's expanding sonic palette, Sell Out also functions as a critique of the rock and roll lifestyle. Not the clichéd mantra of sex, drugs, and rock and roll but in the ways that commercial advertising fabricates a youth-oriented cultural reality by hawking pimple cream, deodorant, food, musical equipment, etc., and linking it with rock and roll. In this sense Sell Out is a reflective work, one that struggles with rock and roll as a cultural expression that aspires to aesthetic permanence while marketed as ephemera. From this conflict emerges a pop art masterpiece. Authors - John Dougan: John Dougan received a Ph.D. in American Studies from the College of William & Mary and is an associate professor in the Department of Recording Industry at Middle Tennessee State University.

Dreamies
Program Twelve
PS, US Out of nowhere return album from Bill Holt, aka Dreamies; very similar in feel to the original Dreamies album from 1974, but an updated concept. "More than three decades after his first and only Dreamies album, Bill Holt sets out to convey his sense of the times with a fascinating new soundscape. This new album is equal parts electronic, musique concrete, and pure pop performed by a talented singer songwriter. Holt's original 1974 LP, Dreamies Programs Ten and Eleven, was set in the chaos of the Cold War. This new album takes an intriguing look at the War On Terror, a 48-minute odyssey with 11 tracks. Bill tells his story with a mostly mellow blend of synth, guitar, percussion and vocals, seasoned with plenty of found sound and FX. Dreamies: Program Twelve. Where Big Brother meets cowboys and Islam. So saddle up. Sit back. Enjoy the ride."

Earlies, The
Enemy Chorus
PS, US"The Enemy Chorus" is a hypnotic voyage through a largely aphotic locale with unpredictable bursts of light and sound - perhaps amidst the heavens, or maybe under our own feet. While no less beautiful than their debut, this record carries a greater feeling of uncertainty, longing, anxiety, and sadness. The group's production skills have been greatly refined - at times, reminiscent of NIGEL GODRICH'S great layered atmospheres. Though, the approach to recording is essentially the same, and the distinct "EARLIES sound" remains intact. Their listening habits changed considerably between the recording of the two albums - exploring the depths of progressive and krautrock. Influences range from the essential work of FAUST, to prog greats GENTLE GIANT, to the musique concrete madness of JEAN-CLAUDE VANNIER.

Early Years, The
S-T
PS, UK The chilling, psychedelia-drenched self-titled debut from this UK band is a dense mix of the trio's influences: Spiritualized, Mogwai, Television, Neu, and Tortoise. A sound that lies somewhere between their joint love for ambient noise, motorik beats, drones, feedback, harmony, and melody. They've been a fixture of late night MTV2 rotation, and recently created the soundtrack for a Nike World Cup commercial. The US version of this album contains a bonus disc with four additional tracks and two videos. "Within ten songs, The Early Years manage to run the gamut of emotional exploration that leaves you elated, desperate, and moved in such ways you had not felt since your own early years. Truly wondrous" - The Fly (UK).

Frank And Walters, The
You Deserve To Be Happy
PS, SPAIN We live in a world that constantly tells us we don't have what we need and we are not who we should be. It's a non-stop unavoidable torrent, of comparatives, negatives and superlatives. "A Renewed Interest In Happiness" by The Frank And Walters, tell us that everything is going to be all right. It is an antidote to the trials and tribulations we all face. Questions and answers beautifully packaged in unforgettably perfect melodies. The early spring of 2006 saw a little town called Ballyvinny make an entry into the indie-pop history book as The Frank And Walters kicked off the sessions that would eventually become their fifth studio album. True as always to their 'Brave Indie Warrior' code, their surroundings came complete with no running water, no heating and no soundproofing. The first ears to hear the record were on the cows that stared curiously in the window of the practice room. The sessions went well and a team was assembled. Dave Couse came on board as the producer (having previously worked on Grand Parade and indeed EP1 back in '91). Richard Rainey signed up to mix some tracks. Paul met sound engineer Kieran Lynch while on a train journey from Dublin to Cork and secured him as the recording engineer for the album. Work began in earnest in May. It quickly became clear that something special was happening. It is probably their finest work.

Gaar, Gillian G.
Nirvana: In Utero (33 1/3 Paperback Book)
PS, US <p>Though Nevermind was Nirvana's most commercially successful album, and the record that broke them - and the grunge phenomenon - internationally, In Utero has increasingly become regarded as the band's best album, both by the critics and the band members themselves. Instead of sticking to the "grunge pop" formula that made Nevermind so palatable to the mainstream, Nirvana chose instead to challenge their audience, producing an album that the band's creative force, Kurt Cobain, said truly matched his vision of what he had always wanted his band to sound like. Here, the full story behind the creation of In Utero is told for the first time. Authors - Gillian G. Gaar: Gillian G. Gaar is the author of She's a Rebel: The History of Women in Rock'n'Roll. She served as project consultant on the Nirvana box set With the Lights Out. She lives in Seattle.

Gilberto, Astrud
September 17, 1969
PS, UK Is there any need for an introduction to Astrud Gilberto, The Girl From Ipanema, who brought the nonchalant 'Vaga' vocal style of the Brasilian New Wave to international attention and launched a thousand indie-girl records and fantasies in a time and place she never imagined....?? Rev-Ola proudly presents the second in their series of Astrud Gilberto's wonderful albums....described as her best album by none other than popmeister Duglas T. Stewart of The BMX Bandits...well, it IS simply amazing. A move into softpop rendered in her trademark sexy style but with the surprising addition of some pretty funky playing. As her tenure at famed jazz label Verve was running down, her versions of songs by The Beatles, Bee Gees, Margo Guryan and The Doors gave a new slant to her amazing talents... simply lovely! - One of the BEST albums ever made anywhere in the world ever anywhere... erm, anytime!

Goblin
The Fanastic Voyage Of Goblin
PS, UK An outstanding progressive rock group in their own right, Goblin's name is synonymous with the cinema of Dario Argento, the director of stylised Italian horror. For him they composed such celebrated scores as 'Profondo Rosso', that starred David Hemmings and which provided the group with a domestic number one hit and the hallucinatory 'Suspiria', which recalls early Can and the free-form improvisations of Amon Duul II and Popul Vuh. Goblin's music is astoundingly effective both as rock and in the context of the films and is internationally celebrated as such. Like David Axelrod, Goblin have been widely sampled and are held in great esteem by the Chemical Brothers and those of that generation.

Hazzard, Tony
Tony Hazzard Sings Tony Hazzard
PS, UK Tony Hazzard's songs are known to millions. During his first flurry of pop success in the mid-late '60s he scored huge hits with "Ha! Ha! Said The Clown" and "Fox On The Run" for Manfred Mann, "Listen To Me" for The Hollies, "Me The Peaceful Heart" for Lulu, "Hello World" for The Tremeloes and "You Won't Be Leaving" for Herman's Hermits. In addition, his "The Sound Of The Candyman's Trumpet" was recorded by Cliff Richard and entered into the 1968 Eurovision Song Contest (note the word SONG there, folks). "Maria Elena" was beautifully rendered by the great Gene Pitney while the Jimmy Page-led Yardbirds turned Tony's "Goodnight Sweet Josephine" into a psych-pop classic. Simon Dupree & The Big Sound, The Casuals, The Family Dogg, Cherry Smash and The (formerly Swinging) Blue Jeans all turned to Hazzard's effortless pop tunes in the late '60s too. In the midst of all this success as a writer, Tony somehow found time to polish up a dozen or so of his demos (themselves things of fully formed wonder as played by the top session cats of the day) and thus was born his first 'solo' LP, Tony Hazzard Sings Tony Hazzard, released in 1969. It features all of the aforementioned mega-hits and a selection of other equally worthy pop gems as rendered by Tony, his band and pals like Jimmy Page and The Hollies' Tony Hicks.

Himes, Geoffrey
Bruce Springsteen: Born In The U.S.A. (33 1/3 Paperback Book)
PS, US When Bruce Springsteen went back on the road in 1984, he opened every show by shouting out, "one, two, one, two, three, four," followed by the droning synth chords of "Born in the U.S.A." Max Weinberg hit his drums with a two-fisted physicality that cut through the swelling chords. With a rolled-up red kerchief around his head and heavy black boots under his faded jeans, Springsteen looked like the character of the song, and from the very first line ("Born down in a dead man's town") he sang with the throat-scraping desperation of a man with his back against the wall. When he reached the crucial lines, though, the guitars and bass dropped out and Weinberg switched to just the hi-hat. Springsteen's voice grew a bit more private and reluctant as he sang, "Nowhere to run. Nowhere to go." It was as if he weren't sure if this were an admission of defeat or the drawing of a line in the sand. But when the band came crashing back at full strength-building a crescendo that fell apart in the cacophony of Springsteen's and Weinberg's wild soloing, paused and then came together again in the determined, marching riff-it was clear that the singer was ready to make a stand. Authors - Geoffrey Himes: Geoffrey Himes has written about music on a weekly basis in the Washington Post since 1977. During that time he has also written about pop music for the Oxford American, Rolling Stone, No Depression, the Chicago Tribune, Country Music Magazine, Sing Out, Request Magazine, Downbeat Magazine, Jazz Times, Musician Magazine, National Public Radio, Bluegrass Unlimited, Crawdaddy Magazine, the Baltimore Sun, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Baltimore Magazine, the Nashville Scene, the Houston Press, the Baltimore City Paper, and other outlets. He has contributed to the following books: The Blackwell Guide to Recorded Country Music, The Encyclopedia of Country Music, The Rolling Stone Jazz & Blues Album Guide and Best Music Writing 2000. He won a 2002 ASCAP/Deems Taylor Award for Music Feature Writing.

Hotel Alexis, The
Goliath, I'm On Your Side
PS, US The second album by Hotel Alexis, shows the band poised to make an impact in the landscape of American song. "Goliath" marks a significant step forward for the Hotel Alexis, and especially for singer/songwriter Sidney Alexis. Taking the Americana and folk influences from the first album, "Goliath" expands the distinctive songs into more experimental and psych influenced territory. Written primarily by Alexis during a stay at an ex-hippy commune in southern Spain and recorded in locations all over the US, the albu's tracks are reminiscent of Sparklehorse trading songs on the porch of Richard Buckner while a Velvet Underground era Lou Reed looks on with an approving nod! Nice!!
