Parasol New Arrivals • May 29, 2007

Hi Friends,

There's not a lot of news to report this week on our end because we were lucky enough to have the day off yesterday but that puts us one day behind. So, we’re going to keep quite today and let the update do the talking. Before we do that, Paul would like to chime in and give you the skinny on what’s new in the Shoes camp.

A few of weeks ago my friend, Jeff Murphy, of the Shoes band released his first ever solo recording. Entitled “Cantilever”, it’s a self recorded affair on which Jeff plays and sings all parts and is very recommended for any fans of his band or melodic pop musical stylings in general. Also just released on the Shoes’ own Black Vinyl Records is “Double Exposure”, a two CD, 30 song set of basement 8 track demos for the their first two studio records, “Present Tense” and “Tongue Twister”. A cool chronicle of the music that got the band signed.

All right folks, with that said, take a look at the goods below and meet us back here next week.

Electronic high fives all around,

Royal and Paul

Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week

Drei Farben House "Any Kind of Feeling" CD $15.00 (ForceTracks)
Drei Farben House is a pop-house project by Hamburg-based producer Michael Siegle. Following his 12" release on Force Tracks, with a stunning Unai remix, Michael Siegle is ready to take off. His first album Any Kind of Feeling continues the Force Tracks series of first class albums: digital disco for pop lovers. Not unlike Swedish producer Unai, this album conveys the desire for sensation and emotion in music. Siegle strips house down to its basic elements. The stuttering synth-disco groove picks up the extraordinary moments of late disco sound. And Siegle adds the key elements of pop music, drastic harmonies and bittersweet melodies combined with jumbled-sounding guitar riffs. Siegle's voice is a perfect supplement to the music, a very neutral voice -- dry and distinct. With only a few pure elements, Siegle creates the atmosphere of a very melancholic autumn night. It's the imagination of resignation, but also a yearning for something, which cannot be articulated. An album of full-blooded melodrama.

Park Hotell "The Guest Who Stayed Forever" 2xCD5 $11.00 (Glory/BD Pop)
Shoegaze guitar-pop action from Swedish outfit Park Hotell (two Ls) led by Christian Ramirez. It's a pair of EPs in a handsome jacket, six songs and two videos. Grand songs and naive/angsty lyrics propelled by rolling snares, cymbal washes and thrumming toms, and let's not forget the Swedish specialty: tambourine! EP #1 has a real Wedding Present vibe, while EP #2 sounds alot like fellow New Order-lovin' countrymen The Embassy. Fans of mid-period Bear Quartet, The Razorcuts, Joy Division, and, yes indeedly-doodly, The Close Lobsters (all seventeen of you), will find guitar tones fizzing and bass lines grinding to your liking. Could it be the sound of spring in full bloom? Yes, it could, something like that! We've also restocked Park Hotell's only other available CD release (as far as I know), a killer 2-song single from 2003. Check out sound samples on the front page and more about the band posted later this week on my Nordic music page, where I stack up the best Scandi gear each week (or so).

Abruptum
Evil Genius
PS, US NOW ON LP!! Formed in 1989 by IT and All. IT had planned to create the band already in 1987 but it wasn't until 1990 that he found the right member to do it. The same year, they recorded their first two demos. There are a multitude of myths surrounding this cult act. The band further became legendary due to the fact that IT was one of the leaders w/in what was called the Satanic Black Circle. IT left the scene completely after several events w/in the circle & threats to him & his family.

His signature songwriting, voice, & melodies have never been better, & are framed in layered harmonies, multi tracked guitars, analog keyboards, & intricate production. Bob & Gene
I Can Be Cool b/w You Don't Need Me
PS, US The A-side is the bittersweet lament of a young man who doesn't have all the hip clothes of the callous attitude of the "cool" but knows in his heart his love for his girl is right. The B-side is a MoDo side that has never been previously issued. It is an artfully constructed Jackson-esque, midtempo track. The recording is rough but as always, the message cuts straight to the heart.

Brown, Steven
Brown Plays Tenco + Live 1988
PS, UK Steven Brown is a core member of cult avant garde band Tuxedomoon. As a solo artist he has recorded some ten solo albums, including Music For Solo Piano (1983), Searching For Contact (1987), Half Out (1991), Nine Rain (1996) and Decade (2003). Brown Plays Tenco was recorded in Italy in 1987 and features Steven's own interpretations of five songs written by cult artist Luigi Tenco. Born in Cassine in 1938, Tenco scored many hits as a singer in Italy during the 1960s, but shot himself through the head at the San Remo Festival in 1967 after Ciao amore ciao (Hello, Love, Hello), failed to reach the final. The suicide note explained that his suicide was a gesture of protest against the jury's taste in music. Never available on CD before, Brown Plays Tenco has now been digitally remastered with twelve bonus tracks recorded live in Italy in 1988. These include in-concert renditions of songs by Luigi Tenco as well as solo material by both Brown (Besides All That, rwf) and Tuxedomoon (What Use?, Egypt , Lowlands Tone Poem). Artist Resume: Steven Brown was born in Chicago in 1952, and currently resides in Mexico City. Tuxedomoon formed in San Francisco in 1977 around the nucleus of Steven Brown, Blaine Reininger and Peter Principle. Following a string of releases on the Residents' Ralph label, the band relocated to Europe in 1981. Their dozen-odd group albums include the classics Half Mute, Desire, Suite En Sous-Sol, Ghost Sonata and Holy Wars. The latest TM album Bardo Hotel was released in 2006.

Charalambides
Electricity Ghost
PS, US Trio recordings (featuring Heather Leigh Murray on vox/ pedal steel/psaltry) that date from the same sessions that produced Joy Shapes. Completely improvised, and similar in feel & instrumentation to 'Natural Light' from Joy Shapes, these five pieces snake out of a gently detailed terrain of interlocking thought forms, eventually weaving themselves into towering thickets of monolithic spikes. Some of the most emotionally charged and harsh Charalambides sounds ever laid down, before or since, and unlikely to be repeated in the same way ever again. Edition of 300, xeroxed cardstock sleeves. Better hurry! Paging Kit Moore.

Dactyl
Teething
PS, US This Baltimore quartet's debut storms like an Amrep time capsule being cracked open after 10 years in a deep void. Rhythmically dense w/ a wall of sound, it's an approach favored by most late model noise outfits that most bands have been too chickenshit to attempt for a long time. Lyrically bizarre, vocally cuckoo.

Delay, Vladislav
Whistleblower
PS, US His far-flung soundscapes & futuristic sound-processing are merely a way to analyze & handle the contemporary. Motifs that may appear trashy or messy to the uninitiated - sound exploration, distortions, dub technologies - can in fact be for him surprisingly sophisticated tools for dissecting and examining the world as it is, piece by piece, layer after layer.

Their outlook on life is a strong basis of the band and sensibility resulting from it has a significant impact on their music.

Dextro
Do You Need Help
PS, UK Young Scot Ewan Mackenzie aka Dextro is the latest talent to join the Border Community stable with the sun-kissed Air-esque lushness of 'Do You Need Help'. Dextro's varied repertoire of downtempo loveliness, edgy punk funk and broken beats was previously given an airing on a recent EP for the UK's Jumblefunk, and he can count none other than Ulrich Schnauss amongst his fans. A remix from the label's resident lunatics The MFA takes the beautiful original to the dancefloor, a 'new wave house' slice of fun from the Kompakt-approved daft duo who are currently turning the heads of people from all areas of the musical spectrum. To top it off there's yet another pair of tools from Border Community big boss man James Holden -- washes of layered noise and ambience to create a druggy breakdown, or use however else you see fit.

Hair Police
Blind Kingdom
PS, BELGIUM Odd colored carpet of bizarre 3D fields dominate the bright and lurid psychedelic forests you'll have to run thru to grab a mug a brew at the end of the trip! Hop on the back of a giant pink elephant and let go, eventually follow his tiny dick-like tail if u are too small to climb up this pink turt in space! But do give it a try and check out what's left? Thats right: nothing! Just a puddle of restless throbbing poop in different colours. The elephant turns out to be a puddle as well and the sounds you're hearing are all on the most psychedelic Hair Police LP so far! This is definitely way different then any of their other recordings, way more high bliss, blown out delayed voice and hardly any harshness. Originally recorded as a Hair Police radio special for Radio Centraal in Antwerp! Thick black and neon blue eye destructive cover design and a psychic laser etch on the B-side of this 180 grams wax!"

Kammerflimmer Kollektief
Jinx
PS, US LP version. This is the 6th full-length release from Karlsruhe, Germany, recorded by Tobias Levin at Electric Avenue Studio. This band is still a "collective," although w/in the last yrs & extensive touring through Europe, a group of 3 core members emerged from the original line-up. Whispering, a laid-back pop rhythm & something that sounds like an overwound gramophone, these 8 songs leave the wide-screen cinemascope soundscapes of the previous albums behind. With their serenity, these songs sound almost like a sediment of the band's earlier approach.

Legiac
Mings Feaner
PS, NETHERLANDS Announcing a new child to the Sending Orbs family has always been a great pleasure of a special kind, but rarely has the unity of great music and artwork brought us to such mountainous spheres of admiration and pride. Legiac is the well-known and genre-present Funckarma brothers, teaming up with vintage analog synth-guru and professional behind-the-scenes soundtracker, Cor Bolten. This is an album following fully along Sending Orbs' catalog: 70 minutes of unearthly ambient, heartbreaking pads, punching beats and the insane sound-production Funckarma is so known for. Some adjectives if you want: delicate, enigmatic, distant, pretty, obscure. The cooperation with Bolten definitely sheds a new daylight on Funckarma's music. Never before have they released an album with such a natural feeling of completion and unity. Hearing those highly textured ambient scapes and rhythmical interceptions interweave at such a subconscious level, we cannot but say this trio really has something magical and unheard going on. The collaboration with our in-house designer Jeroen Advocaat (who is on his way to a legendary status in the cover art world) yields one of his finest artworks he has done for Sending Orbs: the painting of an intercepted orb, an artifact made out of organic and mechanical material, all in great detail, over a striking 8 page, thick-paper booklet that could very much be sold as a piece of art by itself.

Life on Earth!
Look!! There is Life on Earth!
PS, SWEDEN Even more psychedelic than Dungen, and sung in English... Life on Earth! is the solo-work of talented multi-instrumentalist Mattias Gustavsson, from the Swedish band Dungen. Together with some fellow travelling kindred musical spirits (musicians from Dungen, The Works, Town & Country and Mia Doi Todd), he has created an amazingly deep and timeless album filled with shimmering vibrant psychedelic folk-rock-pop. The basic idea was to make music that celebrates the incredible and absolutely wonderful phenomenon of life on Earth, hoping to spread some joy to any possible listeners. The project has been going on since 2003. Barefoot on tiptoe, in a bubble of magic, swirling elegantly among the stars. Here's life on earth according to Life On Earth!: "Right in between, both after and before, nobody really knows where we came from or where we are going ... Suddenly one is cut off from one's past, intruded on by the present, without a clue of what to say or what to do about anything. But where ever we may go, it is all one and the same anyway. Why not simply enjoy it, until the day we die? So lay all your worry aside now. Don't hesitate; let your dreams sweep you away. Then you may see everything that's forgotten here. Lean back and feel how light and exquisite you truly are. Wonder at the beauty of nature; listen to how it invites you among beech trees and squirrels. Embrace it, because he and she and it and we are all connected to you and you are just like everything else, constantly changing into wondrous beings yet unseen -- you might watch the life on Earth for inspiration." Got it? In other words, absolutely joyful, wondrous, swirling Swedish psych-folk loveliness. Sparkling acoustic singer-songwriter sing-a-longs, acid-drenched guitar burners, spacey vocals, Moog whines, sitar-drone, psych-flute trill, bongos, echoes, some dreamy backwards-masking, and even some songs in English! More pared down (but no less thrilling) than Dungen, with its hands and feet on the warm rocks beside the river.

Low Low Low La La La Love Love Love
Ends of June
PS, US Initially intended as musical outlet for Kelly Dyson, Low Low Low La La La Love Love Love's full inception came in the form of a sudden, unplanned collaboration between Kelly and vocalist Natalia Brightmore. Instant musical chemistry coupled with a brief period of writing & recording yielded a complete body of bittersweet, forthright folk songs, self-released on the band's own Birds and Rodents label (UK) in 2004. Two years later, after randomly stumbling upon some breathtaking Low Low clips online, Portland, OR label Other Electricities realized there was something unique brewing overseas. The band with the impossibly long name occupied space in their ears and repeated listens only further reinforced the fascination. The two parties eventually got to talking and came to the conclusion that this music needed to reach a wider audience; these sounds just couldn't be slept on much longer. Ends of June is Low Low's second outing and first U.S. release, boasting twelve new, intimate tracks saturated in the same undeniable warmth and familiarity offered on their debut. Here, the music's immediacy and accessibility fails to wane even slightly, building upon the solid groundwork laid in the first album. Natalia's amicable departure and a change in line-up, currently featuring Kelly Dyson (guitar, lead vocals), Ellis Dyson (drums, clarinet, percussion), Chris Robinson (guitar, vocals), Hugo Edwardes (bass), Nick Guy (vocals, percussion), and Brian Lutchmiah (vocals, percussion), has filled out Low Low now more of a band then an "acoustic folk duo". Despite these alterations, no element of overall sound is compromised as new paths are traversed with regards to instrumentation and arrangement. Self recorded and produced in Ellis' bedroom studio, Ends of June showcases Low Low's progressive and deft grasp on songwriting. From the pensive yet infectious "The Way You Play," to the fluid lullaby "Happiness at the New Day," it's near-impossible to deny the resultant intrigue of each composition, and of the record as a whole. These songs beckon to be taken in again and again... Collectively, the band members live and work in and around Manchester, England. To date, they have shared stages with the likes of Regina Spektor and Six Organs of Admittance. Plans are currently being made for a re-master/reissue of Low Low's s/t debut, which should be available in wider release mid-2007. "As acoustic documents of the breakdown of a long-term relationships go, this is up there. Recorded lo-fi style - in a bedroom apparently - this affecting release combines breathless harmonies and fragile tunes to achieve a strange warmth. Also makes Belle & Sebastian sound like Motorhead." - The Crack "Rooted firmly in the world of low/no-fi folk, this is a charming record that recalls the same juxtaposition of fragility and strength of character that suffused the early Elliott Smith albums." - Tangents. For Fans Of: Devendra Banhart, Iron & Wine, Six Organs of Admittance, Nick Drake Songs of Green Pheasant.

Magic Bullets
A Child but in Life Yet a Doctor in Love
PS, US The astonishing debut album by the San Francisco sextet Magic Bullets. A tour-de-force with 10 songs that make friends with the rich traditions of post-punk (Gang of Four), new wave (early Talking Heads) and C86 (The Wedding Present), whilst introducing themselves to contemporaries influenced by these scenes (The Walkmen, French Kicks) with their own secret handshake. Singer Philip Benson's poised, dynamic croon towers over his contemporaries, yet does not overshadow his own band's intricate musicianship - a crafty layering of Felt-esque melodies onto Bizarro-era chords. "Yesterday's Seen Better Days" launches the record with a C86 meets "Ticket To Ride" guitar riff, coyly anticipating Benson's dramatic album entrance. Benson's voice - energetic, yet inconsolable - coaxes the listener into a world in which deceptively bright colors are used to draw bleak pictures. "Heatstroke" is an unforgettable renewal of the classic new wave territory paved by The Stranglers and Power, Corruption and Liesera New Order.

Napolitano, Johnette
Scarred
PS, US An L.A. daughter whose name is synonymous with songs about the city's honking traffic blur and Hollywood Boulevard's forgotten dreamers, Johnette Napolitano has followed her musical fancies for more than two decades, most famously with Concrete Blonde, as a singer-songwriter-musician whose boundless voice was an instrument of power and passion. Scarred's 12 songs are startling, spectacular and sublime. Chilling, thrilling choruses? Yep -- snaky and shaky and more soaring than ever. Challenging, raw, gorgeous -- Scarred is filled with the most intimate songs the singer's ever shared with fans. The beginning of an exciting new chapter for Johnette Napolitano? Bet on it.

Omar Rodriguez-Lopez Quintet
Se Dice Bisonte, No Bufalo
PS, US One of four albums written and recorded by The Mars Volta's Omar Rodriguez-Lopez whilst living in Amsterdam in 2005, Se Dice Bisonte, No Bufalo was conceived simultaneously to TMV's Amputechture and Omar's soundtrack to the forthcoming Jorge Hernandez film, El Bufalo de la Noche. Consisting of 3 vocal tracks and 6 instrumentals, the album includes the original studio version of the song "Please Heat This Eventually" (without the vocals of Damo Suzuki). The song "Rapid Fire Tollbooth" has been a feature of The Mars Volta's live set for the past few months and is proving to be a favorite among the rabid fans populating the band's message board.

Pikelet
Self-Titled
PS, AUSTRALIA Pikelet is Evelyn Morris, a 24 year old musical wunderkind from the outer suburbs of Melbourne who began life as a hardcoreobsessed drummer, and still currently serves on sticks in such heavy-hitting Melbourne institutions as Baseball and True Radical Miracle. But a couple of years ago, something tickled Evelyn's brain in a funny way and she felt compelled to grab an old accordion, a guitar and a delay pedal, and launch a decidedly un-hardcore solo career. The name comes from Evelyn's mother, who used to spoil her kids with pikelets when she was a little strapped for cash. "She always had eggs, she always had flour and powdered milk in the cupboard, so she would just throw together pikelets," Evelyn told Mess + Noise Magazine recently. "It was a really big deal for me, but I found out later that it was just what she did when she had nothing else." Engineered and produced by US uber-producer Casey Rice (Tortoise, Sea & Cake, Ben Lee and countless others), Pikelet's debut self-titled album is a gorgeous, multitiered work of swirling and shifting melody, layered harmonies and charming story-telling, almost entirely performed by Evelyn herself. All in all, Pikelet is a uniquely assured and distinctive debut.

Port Royal
Afraid To Dance
PS, UK The second album from the band who injected new life into the post-rock scene with their breathtaking debut "Flares" in 2005. For those unfamiliar with their debut, port-royal are anything but just another generic epic instrumental outfit; utilising subtle electronics and almost classical arrangements, they create lengthy, expansive, melancholic compositions that often have movements within the individual tracks, constantly evolving and shifting in tempo. Though "Afraid To Dance" follows the formula that made "Flares" such a success, it also displays sufficient progression to be more than just "Flares pt2"; though the same components are evident, the emphasis has shifted towards the electronic beats and pure rhythm that underpin their sound, bringing them to the forefront while the hypnotic spacerock guitars and synth gently weave melodies beneath. Full press push on what could be the biggest album on the label to date; journalists have been asking for promo copies ever since the release was listed on the Resonant website, so expect a wave of support. First UK tour dates to follow in the summer, with European dates being finalised now.

Exo-Grid
PS, CANADA Genre: Electronic/Breakcore. puzzleweasel's compositions are dense storms of, complex brain wave manipulating wonderment. Fusing breakcore and all things experimental and leaving your synapses tingling. puzzleweasel's music falls somewhere between Richard Devine and Otto Von Schirach, with an unabashed love of throbbing jungle basslines and futuresque electronic wizardry. Shady Bard
From The Ground Up
PS, UK From The Ground Up is the debut album from Birmingham's Shady Bard, a mini indieorchestra of pianos, guitars, casiotones, violin, cello, French horn and samples. Their music is at once passionate, eloquent, tender, bombastic and fragile, evocative of Coldplay, Mercury Rev, Sigur Ros and Sparklehorse. Singer Lawrence Becko, whose cracked tones contribute to the album's bruised tone, writes using a special gift known as synaesthesia, which is the pairing of two or more senses. When Lawrence sees words, they appear as colours. "Synaesthesia shapes what we do in every way and makes me very obsessive," he explains. "To me, every word and every chord have a colour and they all have to match up. So Penguins contains a lot of light blue, white and green colours to match with the imagery of ice and nature. Torch Song and Fires are rich yellows and oranges respectively to reflect their titles." The album joins a loose group of ecologically themed albums that includes Grandaddy's The Sophtware Slump, Pulp's We Love Life and British Sea Power's Open Season. Penguins, Bobby and Treeology all look at the consequences of environmental irresponsibility, Treeology telling the story of a tree surgeon who attempts to preserve an entire forest with creosote and varnish but kills the trees in the process. The nature-loving theme runs not just through the lyrics but through the band's actions as well - they handed out birdseed to the public at one gig, band member Jasmine Hollingum makes craft from natural objects and they once performed in the Victorian bandstand at Birmingham's botanical gardens. "But as much as nature, I think we're influenced by a bigger theme of how people deal with the world†around them - with climate, with living things, with the land, with each other," they say. "We use environmental problems to say something about the wider picture - sometimes personally, sometimes politically."

Shannon, Mike
Tactile Green EP
PS, CANADA Tactile Green features Mike's deeper, slightly melancholic deep techno house tracks. Detroit-inspired 'Devotional' starts off with an underlay of brushed snare, jazz ride loops and crispy digital atmosphere that leads into layer upon layer of warm synth that simmer and build up for minutes. Finally dropping into a 909-backed groove that drives the track to a stripped-down finish leaving only the synth bass and kick. The German slang for street organ 'Quetschkomode' is a goofy house track inspired by an off-kilter walk past an old gypsy street organ player in Deutscheland. After stumbling back to the studio, the organ somehow managed to manifest itself into the track as a crazy arpeggio-like synth line. Underlined with a shuffling slick groove that keeps things grinding over 9 minutes. Tactile Green concludes the series with a schitzo sense of humor, sadness and sonic diversity that leaves one standing on the 8am dancefloor swimming in tears of joy.

Thompson, Richard
Sweet Warrior
PS, US Literate rocker Richard Thompson's new album, Sweet Warrior, is a return to his classic electric sound, his first plugged-in album since 2003's The Old Kit Bag. Filled with 14 songs of stories of loss and betrayal, the album also contains one of Thompson's most overtly political songs to date, "Dad's Gonna Kill Me," told from the perspective of a nervous young soldier stationed in Baghdad (abbreviated as "Dad" in the song). Richard Thompson is a consummate singer, songwriter, and guitarist. His career stretches back to the late '60s, when he was a founding member of the British folk-rock Fairport Convention. In the late '70s, with his then-wife, Linda, he recorded Shoot Out the Lights, which regularly makes critics' lists of the best records of all time. In the '90s, he experienced another career renaissance with the album Rumor & Sigh and he remains an elder-statesman of alternative rock.

Thorn, Tracy
A Distant Shore
PS, UK Tracey Thorn is one half of EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL. 'A Distant Shore' is Tracey's only solo album and is classy, simple melodic tunes with just vocals and a guitar. The album reached number one in the Indie chart in 1983. 'A Distant Shore' is now being re-issued with a new booklet, and with the surge in popularity of Everything But The Girl with the international hit single 'Missing', interest in Tracey's solo recordings has never been higher. The essential Cherry Red LP, A Distant Shore is a timeless classic. Recorded for just £138 when she was just 20 years old, it is an astonishing demonstration of Tracey's songwriting talent, stripped down to vocal and acoustic guitar. Both the single Plain Sailing and the album featured strongly in the indie charts, and the LP has now been certified a silver disk with over 60 000 sales in the UK. Tracey was in THE MARINE GIRLS and of course went on to form EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL with Ben Watt.

Thank You For Being You
PS, US A compilation of scottish independent labels - 1980 - present. Electric Honey, the label set up by students at Glasgow's Stow College, are set to release a unique compilation of tracks from Scottish Independent labels from 1980 to present on the 12th of May 2007. Featuring twelve tracks from the likes of Belle & Sebastian, Teenage Fanclub, Josef K, Fire Engines, Future Pilot AKA and relative new comers How To Swim, this compilation hopes to highlight the wealth and diversity of Scottish independent labels that have supported and nurtured the Scottish underground scene from 1980 to 2000 approx. From the first flourishes of post-punk activity from the legendary Postcard and Fast Product/Pop Aural labels, through to the present with labels as diverse as Chemikal Underground and Geographic, Scottish independents continue to receive international recognition. Belle & Sebastian came to public prominence with the release of their debut album, 'Tigermilk', released in 1996 on Stow College's Electric Honey label. 1,000 of the album were cut, with the vinyl - only release selling out before being deleted. This led to a bidding frenzy on internet auction-sites, with one American fan paying $1,200 Dollars for a copy On the back of the Electric Honey release, Belle & Sebastian were signed to Jeepster Records and their 2nd album, "If You're Feeling Sinister", cemented their critical reputation and proved to be a commercial success. Further albums on Jeepster resulted in the group building a massive international following, before singing to legendary London independent label Rough Trade for their 2003 album, "Dear Catastrophe Waitress".Students on Glasgow's Stow College HND Music Business course are involved with three labels; Electric Honey, Gdansk, and Root8. Through their involvement, students gain invaluable knowledge and experience of the machinations of the music industry, covering all aspects from legal, artistic, to promotion. Tutored by Douglas MacIntyre, head of the Creeping Bent Organisation, itself an influential independent label over the last ten years, the course covers many grounds...culturally, musically and socially and thus Electric Honey is probably (almost certainly) the most successful College label in the world. Tracklisting: 1. Belle & Sebastian - 'She's Losing It' (Electric Honey) 2. Teenage Fanclub - 'Fallen Leaves' (Pema) 3. Josef K - 'It's Kinda Funny' (Postcard circa 1980) 4. King Creosote - 'King Bubbles In Sand' (Fence) 5. The Delgados - 'Monica Webster' (Chemikal Underground) 6. Fire Engines - 'Get Up & Use Me' (Codex / Fast / Pop Aural) 7. The Pastels - 'The Viaduct' (Domino/Geographic) 8. Frank Blake - 'Any Way The Wind Blows' (Shoeshine) 9. The Nectarine No9 - 'Saint Jack ' (Postcard circa 1995) 10. Beat Chic: Dream Babes
PS, UK We return to the successful 60's Brit Girl series Dream Babes for the seventh time, with a theme that is a focus on the 'Beatier' end of the spectrum. Taking Merseybeat as a bench mark we include a few tunes that illustrate the sounds around at the time Merseybeat struck, such as American pop covers 'Pop Pop Pop Pie' and 'That Boy John', 'the Showband' recording of 'Baby Roo', and Joe Meek's production of 'Hobbies'. Then progress through prime time Beat records, such as The Beat Chics rousing 'Now I Know' complete with swirling farfisa like organ in the middle section, very reminiscent of early Animals. A motif that returns on the Alan Price produced 'Can't You Hear My Heartbeat'. Finally emerging mid decade with a hint of what came next, Motown influenced backbeats and Horn parts perfectly exampled on 'Lets Start The Party Going'. Which is where we will pick up next volume. On Beat Chic we also include a healthy dose of recordings being reissued for the first time, such as those by Polly Perkins with whom we have just connected (preface to a Polly Perkins solo collection). Also three previously unreleased recordings, those by Christine Holmes, discovered in the archives of songwriter Pete Dello where Miss Holmes assisted the pre-Honeybus artist/writer with early demos. You Too Can Be A Beatle - Polly Perkins / Doesn't He Know - Christine Holmes / That Boy John - Billie Davis / Pop Pop Pop-Pie - Simone Jackson / Baby Roo - Eileen Reed & The Cadets / Hobbies - Jenny Moss / Now I Know - The Beat Chics / Falling In Love Again - Polly Perkins / Can't You Hear My Heartbeat - Goldie & The Gingerbreads / Young Lover - Polly Perkins / Tomorrows Fool - Marian Angel / The Folk I Love - The Carrolls / Every Little Kiss - Christine Holmes / Why Can't I Love Him - Jacki Bond / Guess I'm Dumb - Dani Sheridan / Here Comes My Baby- Christine Holmes / Everybody I Know - Carol Friday / You Don't Care - Val Lenton / Gone Tomorrow - Carol Friday / Whatever Happened To The 7 Day Week - Bella And Me / Lets Start The Party Again - Karen Young / Headlines - Goldie

Lovin' Fire: 20 Obscure Gems from the UK and Europe
PS, UK Brand new prog compilation containing rarities, compiled by legendary psych musician and Psychic Circle label-head, Nick Saloman (The Bevis Frond). Psychic Circle endeavors to go a little bit further than your average comp imprint, and the intention is to assemble themed albums of rare tunes that have been overlooked by other compilers. Psychic Circle's production values are of the highest order, and the sound quality as good as it can possibly be. The original artwork is designed to reflect the musical content, and the 8-page booklet, written by Saloman, is informative and well researched. The names of the bands may not be familiar, but the quality of their music is undeniable. As the '60s gave way to the '70s, it wasn't just fashion that was in a frenzied state of flux. Music, too, was undergoing a seismic transformation. By late '69, progressive rock was becoming established as the prevailing musical genre, a position it was to occupy until the birth of punk in the next decade. This compilation comprises 20 unknown diamonds, previously un-comped on CD, from prog's early days. Artists include: Silence, Ray Owen's Moon, Ipsissimus, The Warm Sensation, Pacific Sound, Apartment 1, White Mule, Left Side, Mayroc, The Exchange And Mart, The Royal Servants, Custer's Track, Rainbows, The Locomotive, Andromeda, Whichwhat, The Influence, Children, Hunter and Paul Nicholas.

Aroah
El Dia Después (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 12th)
PS, SPAIN Aroah's much anticipated third studio long player, El día después, brings ten songs sung in Spanish where sincerity lays next to hope: smart, moving, stylistic and melancholic folk pop music that's often orchestral yet intimate. El día después is a record of an intense, harsh reflection. Produced by Raül Fernandez (Refree), who also helped Irene crafting the acoustic and inspired atmosphere of "En el patio interior", an EP released about two years ago. In this new album, Irene's voice sounds new and clean. She now sings every line in Spanish (except for some words in English and French), surmounting all the shyness she has suffered from since she started writing lyrics. Not far from Ida, Mary Timony or Lisa Germano (she has even been called "a Catpower you can relate to"), Irene now turns what used to be folk raised in an American hotbed into a sincere and moving and (often) orchestral pop. We either have to point out El día después is nearly a rupture with Aroah's first two records, or just mention she has chosen to take a new and adventurous path. Irene reveals all of her poetry, talent, humor and shy optimism throughout its 29 minutes. Aroah has grown older, wiser. All of her thoughts evolve in this touching album of beautiful simplicity.

The original album's 15 tracks are augmented with 12 bonus songs for a total of...27! ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Irresistible guitar pop." TIME OUT NY: "The Bongos' 1982 debut is one of the best albums to come out of the NYC area during the fertile, shadowy period between punk and new wave. A pitch-perfect mediation of the nervy energy of fellow Hobokenites the Feelies and the jangly guitars that R.E.M. would soon make famous, Drums Along the Hudson's concise songs and terse, cryptic lyrics sound just as fresh today. At least eight of the record's 15 insanely catchy songs (including the one that's 29 seconds long) would totally weaponize a mix-tape."

Claudia Quintet
For (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 5TH)
PS, US Since their founding in the late 1990s, TCQ has walked a unique path in contemporary jazz. Unlike most jazz ensembles where the particular musicians may come & go, drummer, composer & leader John Hollenbeck always wanted Claudia to be a 'band' with a sound not only determined by the compositions & the instrumentation, but with the actual players who perform the music. This conception is why Claudia has had an immediately identifiable sound since its inception. Drew Gress-acoustic bass, Matt Moran-vibes, Ted Reichman-accordion & Chris Speed-clarinet & tenor sax all make TCQ the fantastic band that it is. An astonishing band with a huge range of emotional depth & range & with appeal far beyond strictly 'jazz' listeners. For this, their fourth album, they've released an album of dedications. This album & band has wide appeal beyond just 'jazz' fans. ""This is a true ensemble from top to bottom, a sonic equivalent to a hand-woven tapestry. Impressive." - Downbeat

Three Imaginary Boys (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 5TH)
PS, US They recorded their debut album @ Londons Morgan Studios & released it on May 8, 1979. This line-up lasted only for their 1st album, making it unique in its essentially minimal sound. The album was released in the US w/ a different title (Boys Dont Cry - from one of the bands best selling singles) & a slightly different track listing.

Domm
Yoloxochitl (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 5TH)
PS, US Dommm, aka Dominic Tiberio, hails from Los Angeles, and pushing through cracks of those sun bleached and dusty sidewalks comes his debut record on the Los Angeles based upstart record label, Young Cubs. By deftly mixing the electronic chaos of the Tigerbeat6 roster, with the ambient buzzes of Fennesz and spinning it together with pop synth stabs, he creates a warm humanity that takes you from heartbreak one minute to the dance floor the next. Tracks like "Sloth" and "Dad" set angular, jagged guitars side by side with abstract beats and mixing them in a perfect, organic haze. The thumping bass on "With a Statue" and synth outro flash like disco lights in an empty club calling out for anyone in the dark to dance. Taken from a Sandra Cisneros novel, yoloxochitl is an ingredient in tea that helps sooth heartache. Underneath the electronic chaos of this record lies a sense of loss but that same chaos envelops it and twists it into a livable, but imperfect compromise. Listening to "Yoloxochitl" is like watching a hazy sunset over the City of Angels, flawed and beautiful but altogether feeling that you are happy to be alive.

Lindt, Virna
Shiver (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 26TH)
PS, UK An extended CD reissue of 'Shiver', the debut album by Swedish pop sophisticate Virna Lindt, originally released by The Compact Organisation in 1983. Written and produced by Virna Lindt and Tot Taylor, the acclaimed Shiver album offers 12 slices of chic, Cold War pop informed by 1960s spy thriller soundtracks and musique concrete, including the singles Attention Stockholm and I Experienced Love. The album has been digitally remixed and re-modelled from the original mastertapes, and now sounds even more immaculate than before. The new edition of Shiver also features bonus track The Windmills of Your Mind, a rare Michel Legrand cover version from The Thomas Crown Affair originally recorded for the Crepuscule movie compilation Moving Soundtracks. Contemporary reviews for Shiver:"Intrepid undercover agent disguised as a top international fashion model sets out on a secret mission behind the Iron Curtain, armed only with a firm sense of fair play and a gadget-filled powder compact" (NME); "Euro-eccentric. Virna Lindt casts herself as a mysterious blonde in a loving pastiche of Continental movie music" (Sounds); "Only the surly amongst you can fail to acknowledge the splendour of Virna Lindt's new single I Experienced Love, and the equally thrilling Shiver lp, the epitome of Compact's sleek, chic Sixties tease" (The Face); "Imagine a pastiche of all those old Sixties spy series, like Danger Man, The Avengers and The Man From Uncle. Well, this would be the perfect soundtrack to go with it" (London Evening Standard). The CD also features a deluxe 12 page booklet featuring original artwork and detailed dossier on Virna Lindt. Lindt, Virna
Play/Record (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 26TH)
PS, UK The first release on CD of 'Play/Record', the second album by Swedish pop sophisticate Virna Lindt, originally released by The Compact Organization in 1985. Written and produced by Virna Lindt during a three-week holiday in London, Play/Record tackles girls who cannot stand the colour red, the numbing effect of the new media, and subterfuge and skulduggery in her adopted home town (the single My Home Town). The album has been digitally remastered by close collaborator Tot Taylor, and now sounds even more immaculate than before. Unfortunately Virna abandoned music forever after creating Play/Record, leaving the world a poorer place. Contemporary reviews for Play/Record: "Ms Lindt deftly conveys a sense of breezy, delirious Sixties camp. Arch instrumentals such as the title track and Add It Up are nothing short of wondrous, and the album is a delightful and accurate evocation of a period when music was allowed to be fun" (Melody Maker); "A uniquely crafted voiceover masterpiece, the diverse tempo moves from the sunny waft of single My Home Town to the more sombre tones of Any Colour But Red" (Sounds); "Lush, intelligent and very, very sexy" (Underground). The CD also features a deluxe 12 page booklet featuring original artwork and liner/recording notes.

Long Blondes
Someone to Drive You Home (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 5TH)
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Following in the shabbily glamorous footsteps of fellow Sheffield residents Pulp, the Long Blondes' debut album, Someone to Drive You Home, is a snappy pop album of quintessentially English vignettes about how growing up is hard to do. The quintet, which is fronted by femme fatale vocalist Kate Jackson, will make you fall in love with their girlish innocence, then steal your boyfriend and break your heart... One of those albums that's honest to goodness fun, and pulling it off with as much pastiche as the Long Blondes makes it one of the year's nicest arrivals. Jarvis Cocker and co. would be proud." Marhaug, Lasse
Alive (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 12TH)
PS, US Working within the fields of noise music for over 15 years, Marhaug has toured most parts of the world, both as a solo artist & as a member of the project JAZZKAMER. Lasse keeps on paying homage to his metal roots (this time Kiss` classic Alive). A selection of live recordings done all over the world in the period of 1998 to 2006. This live album features recordings done among others in Toronto, Bergen, Chicago, New York, Oslo, Baltimore & more. In many ways this is a travel letter from Lasse Marhaug to you! A travel letter in noise. Its starts out with a special piece that Lasse made for the Alarm Award (Norwegian grammy award). He was told by the label to "make ears bleed". Lasse succeeded, he made shockwaves through the audience that was dressed for party & easy listening, and he probably did one of his hardest & most violent tracks ever. This CD documents almost 10 years with noise, and it shows the development in today's noise scene as well as it documents the development of an artist that is today regarded as one of the most respected noise musicians & huge influence of todays noise scene.

Moxham, Stuart & Louis Philippe
The Huddle House (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 12th)
PS, UK 'It's been a while', says Stuart. Indeed it has. Ten years, to be exact. But if The Huddle House's gestation was a long one - the birth itself was as natural and pain-free as could be hoped for. That so many years went by between the very first recording dates at Ken Brake's then fledgling studio (a live take of the title song's arrangement for two guitars) and the final mastering session was due to personal uprooting, multiple commitments, musical or otherwise, conflicting schedules, and the difficulty - in those pre ProTools days - of getting the whole team in one place at one given time. But there is nothing that sounds 'difficult', or forced, in The Huddle House, a collection of songs that will strike the listener by the freshness of the writing ('Stu's best, and by a distance, since Colossal Youth', says Louis, who's worked with Stuart since Random Rules, released in 1993), the spontaneity of the performances and the richness of their sound. It helped that much of this material was also performed live on a number of occasions (in Paris, London, Vienna and New York) before Ken Brake saved the final mixes to disc. As Stuart explains in his liner notes, his songs are written 'like diagrams; short, cryptic exercises, spare and sparing' - all Young Marble Giants and Gist! Fans will be aware of that. But The Huddle House cannot be called 'austere', even if the instrumental canvas is one of utmost simplicity: most of the time, a couple of guitars, a couple of voices, and that is about all, barring a splash of color, a burst of vocal harmonies, a sprinkling of percussion ... Louis: 'I hope that this album will establish once and for all that Stuart is one of this country's best writers, period. Some of the lyrics hit me today with the same strength as they did when I first heard them - 'Save It', for example, or 'Hold My Hand', which is simply heartbreaking. 'The Huddle House' is as evocative as a painting by Edward Hopper... and the tunes are glorious. 'Save It', again - a three-chord wonder, melodically speaking. I am as proud of being on this record as I am of anything else I've done before'. Credits: All songs written by Stuart Moxham, co-arranged by Louis Philippe. Stuart Moxham: lead vocals, steel string and electric guitar, electric bass, keyboards, percussion; Louis Philippe: backing vocals, classical and electric guitar, electric bass; Andrew Moxham: hi-hats on 'Desert Rain'. Produced by Ken Brake at Regal Lane Studio, Regent's Park, London. Artwork designed by Simon Josebury for Secondary Modern, London.
