Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week

Boris "Smile" (Southern Lord) CD $14.00
One of the most representative themes of this album hails from a distortion-drenched, psychedelic rhythmic barnburner. A distinctly characteristic transformation noted w/ this is the vocal styling, which is more melodic & captivating than ever before. His seamless delivery, knack for harmonies & consonance drive it into innovative horizons w/in the already-extensive Boris catalog. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Boris change up the game plan yet again by releasing their first vocal album -- there have been vocals on other sets, especially where an entire side was one track, but this marks the first time that there is nearly an album full of them. Smile picks up where Pink left off, but is both more accessible and more extreme. The trio goes back to the noise aesthetic here, but also embraces something approaching noise pop in the process. They are still heavier than God fronting Blue Cheer, but they don't forget that songs usually contain recognizable melodies."

In Case You Missed It, Angie's PLG Sale Artist Of The Week

Ryan Groff - People In The Midwest CD $8.00
‘People In The Midwest’ is the debut solo album from local hero Ryan Groff, frontman for regionally-acclaimed Americana-Folk-Rock act Elsinore. Joyful, transcendent songs with a spiritual vibe, some sporting a sweet seventies soft-rock vibe, others exploring more ’00 experimental pop idealism. Ryan’s songwriting runs a bit more expansive than your normal human as he lets the instrumentation simmer somewhere between restrained and minimalist and puts front and center a voice (what a voice!) that recalls icons like Jeff Buckley, Nick Drake and Elliott Smith (and Thom Yorke and Freddie Mercury and Morrissey). The kid’s got more range than Amana and Hotpoint put together!

Arca
On Ne Distinguait Plus Les Tetes
PS, FRANCE Arca is a French project initiated by Joan Cambon and Sylvain Chauveau at the beginning of the year 2000. Arca is inspired by music, cinema, literature, photographs, every day life sounds. Arca uses "warm" electronic sounds, mixed with organic instruments, rainy guitars and Sylvain's voice (since the third album) to draw melancholic landscapes not so far from David Sylvian masterpieces. Most of the songs are recorded and mixed at home by Joan Cambon. Sylvain Chauveau made five solo albums: instrumental music based on sweet harmonies of piano and strings. The latest one is "Down to the bone", a record of Depeche Mode covers. He was also part of the former projects Micro:mega and Watermelon Club.

Electric Aborigines
PS, US A power trio updated for the 2060's, noise provocateurs & impressionists, ace players w/ punk rock flair, inspired citizens of a small modernist nation of musical, visual, & literary outrage on the outskirts of Brooklyn, or a rainbow amalgam of all of the above at once.

Baldwin, Nat
Most Valuable Player
PS, US Ten tracks of eerie, intense, neo-classical influenced pop magic. Baldwin's third full length features his signature bowed double bass & hallucinatory vocals crowning off-kilter pop epics & sublime tone poems. It's quirky and neo-classically influenced & tips it's hat to free jazz due to some unusual time signatures & song structures but at it's core it's built on strong, powerful melodies & hooks so it's been appealing to people who are normally a little scared off by some of the strangeness of the Dirty Projectors & others of that ilk.

Belhom, Thomas
No Border
PS, FRANCE Today, whereas some dream of always more hermetic borders, Thomas Belhom asserts his musician and world citizen's freedom on a second album recorded between Munich, London, Nashville and Paris. "No border" is the travelogue of a musician who loves encounters and who cannot bear all that prevent them from happening. Thus his tightrope walker's melodies have been enriched with trips and the recordings of numerous musicians and friends' participation. Stuart Stapples (Tinkersticks) - accompanied by Thomas on stage, after he took part to the recording of his second album "Leaving songs" - sings on the magnificent "South over the seven hills". You can also hear Volker Zander (Calexico), who accompanied Amor Belhom Duo on the double bass at the occasion of their last tour and Kim Ohio (Mad River) - met at the time of Witches Valley, who sings along with Thomas Belhom on three titles. One of the two instrumental tracks of the album is even composed and interpreted by Viva Yazon, who is also painter and from now on Thomas Belhom's wife, accompanied by Paul Nihaus (Lambchop) and his so characteristic steel guitar.

Bobby & Blumm
Everybody Loves...
PS, US Bobby and Blumm is Sweden's Ellinor Blixt (aka Bobby Baby) and Germany's F.S. Blumm, and this is their debut release for the Morr Music label. Bobby tours with her band It's A Musical! and as Bobby Baby and manages a pop-camp for teenage girls in Sweden and Germany. Frank Schültge Blumm has been releasing records since 1998. His first full-length solo album came out on Morr Music in 2001(Mondkuchen), and he is an author and producer of radio-plays. Their debut recording features voices and pickings, guitar, keyboard, Swedish bag and other biscuits. B&B try to give the wide world of pop some little turns and unexpected changes with hiss and rustle, dreamy sound, soft and fragile voices, purity and warmth. Everybody Loves... was recorded 50km north of Berlin in a little house at the edge of the forest in a room with wooden walls and as a result, you will hear the crackling sounds of shellac records, a caressing clothes-brush, some fingertips on greaseproof paper, as well as swinging coat hangers on the night train to Krakow, flat-wound strings on a big guitar and above all, a gentle and silky voice. Bobby and Blumm feel the influence of the following records: Stina Nordenstam, People Are Strange, Nico, Chelsea Girl, Juana Molina, Tres Cosas, David Grubbs, Banana Cabbage, Potato Lettuce, Onion Orange and The Best Of Burt Bacharach.

PS, US The '68 debut, originally released on A&M, from one of the first & finest LA country-rock outfits. Dizzee Rascal
Maths + English
PS, US It's easily Dizzee's most upfront & accessible record to date: full on party tracks like "Flex" & "Bubbles" have turned up the heat on UK dancefloors the more melancholic Mercury Prize-winning debut might have cleared. While American influences were vital to the evolution, the album never compromises its distinctively British identity. Numbers. Words. He has presented a complete work of art, which is the definition of education. "Where once he growled his rhymes through gritted teeth or abortively gulped them down altogether, now the beats let him breathe." -Blender

DJ Hide/Dupuy & Bererian
Oumupo 5
PS, FRANCE Charles Berberian has already proved his love for music in the recent "Playlist" (Naive) and "Night Buzz" (Nocturne). The duo he's been making with Philippe Dupuy since the mid-80s (they gather their talents for drawings and scenarios, an uncommon distribution of tasks) has become a must in the world of illustration, cartoons and comics, with the "Monsieur Jean" series (Dupuis) but also with odder projects like "Le journal d'un album" (L'association). They took on the Japanese DJ Hide as a partner on this volume. As the "protégé" of his fellow countryman DJ Krush (to be heard on OuMuPo 6!), he only has a single solo album to his name ; and yet in this mix based on short samples he offers a splendid deconstruction/reconstruction of the numerous tracks he completely appropriates... to eventually create a very personal work.

DJ Krush/Killoffer
Oumupo 6
PS, FRANCE Abstract hip hop Japanese master DJ Krush offers a wonderful opus. Using almost only instrumental parts, progressively introduces his so characteristic own beats, and slowly makes us forget the rules and original songs. He uses the most exotic sounds from the label catalogue (E. Aldéa, Narcophony, T. Belhom, Bästard, D Petitgand) and manages to develop his proper language to offer a record that sounds like his own ones. Freedom by the constraints for our great lessoning pleasure! The booklet is signed by Killoffer, one of the creators of the independent publisher l'Association and of the OuBaPo. He transcribes in 64 squares, and the same number of oubapian collages, the chess game between the surrealist Marcel Duchamp and the promoter of the Belgian chess association during the first Belgian championship in 1923.

Echo & the Bunnymen
Breaking the Back of Love
PS, US Echo & the Bunnymen's dark, swirling fusion of gloomy post-punk and Doors-inspired psychedelia brought the group a basketful of British hits throughout the '80s, while attracting a sizeable cult following in the United States. Breaking The Back Of Love is a celebration of their nearly 25 years together capturing the group' s most brilliant moments. Lead singer McCulloch's signature swagger still captures the urgency and poetry of Jim Morrison while Sergeant, whose musicianship has improved vastly over the years, shines throughout the set. An essential collection for those who have witnessed the splendor of Echo live and a needed document of their great repertoire.

Elbow
The Seldom Seen Kid
PS, US THE ONION AV CLUB: "Pegging Elbow's sound is tricky, and not just because its members once unhelpfully referred to themselves as "prog without the solos." Image-wise, they seemingly strive to be as nondescript as possible. They're "anthemic," but nothing like U2 or Doves. They're gloomy, lyrically self-loathing Brits, but not nearly eccentric enough to be Radiohead. They're genre-compression machines - their fourth studio album takes unexpected cues from tango-but they'll never have the flamboyance of David Bowie or Beck. Elbow is just a band of smart, dedicated musicians whose expansive songs work through lush instrumentation and diffuse structures to build ballads without hooks, midway between Tindersticks' gloom and Guillemots' flamboyance. Quintessential repeat-listen music... Tango or Led Zeppelin, it all gets folded into an instrumental density few bands can match, in the studio or otherwise. As ever with Elbow, the album is too long, ever ready to make room for more lush melancholy. But beneath the superficial drabness and gloom is a band as diverse as any of its flashier contemporaries"

Elliott, Matt
Drinking Songs
PS, FRANCE With "Drinking Songs", Matt Elliott confirms the move he initiated w/"The Mess We Made" (Domino) & turns over a new leaf. Well known for his dark, organic songs as Third Eye Foundation, this experimenter also remixed Yann Tiersen's "La Dispute" on the Ici d Ailleurs sampler & is known as a historical figure in electronica, having started out w/Flying Saucer Attack & AMP.

Elliott, Matt
Failing songs
PS, FRANCE Matt Elliott has rather an atypical course... He used to work under the pseudo third eye foundation - emblematic figure of the English electronic scene recognized for his atypical electro tinted by drum' N bass. Since his first albums: "the mess we made" (domino records) and "drinking song" (Ici d'ailleurs...), Matt Elliott turns to compositions much more folk, forsaking the laptop and the machines - which go until disappearing on "failing songs", to return to more traditional instruments (guitar, piano, violin...). To succeed to "drinking songs", because it's really about songs, "failing songs" turns Matt Elliott into a true songwriter. He assumes completely his voice and sings very personal and dark texts. Songs whose subtle melodies contrast with the hardness of the words because "Failing songs" is a hard failure report. Between despair and cold anger, the texts talk about the liberal military evolution of the world that the author rejects. The Titles are as sublime as melancholic, bitter and sad, impressed by Slavic music, Greek, and besides, sometimes punctuated of Spanish guitars, sometimes close to Dimitri Chostakovitch or Pascal Comelade's sonorities at his beginnings an artist that Matt however reveals not to know).

Esquivel, Juan Garcia
Mexico Days
PS, UK MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!! The King of Space-Age Pop, the genius of Mexican composer-arranger Juan Garcia Esquivel lay in his audacious instrumentation; his blending together of exotic sounds from other cultures and experimentation with the new tonal palettes that were becoming available in the mid-fifties period from which these, his earliest commercial recordings, derived. Esquivel has been proclaimed by Brian Wilson and by Simpsons creator Matt Groening, "Who'd have thought that out of a genre as debased as easy listening would come something so mind-curdling bizarre and beautiful." This set comprises the first digital release of Esquivel s impossibly rare first album Las Tandas de Juan Garcia Esquivel from 1957 coupled with To Love Again; a collection of singles and 78s recorded in Mexico between 1954-57. Tracklist: Tracklist: Collar De Perlas, Poupurri Curiel, Medley, Goya Universidad, Una Y Otra Vez Sketch Glenn Miller, Tren Nocturno, Nereidas, No Seas Asi, Capullito De Alheli, Bailando Sabras, Politecnico Rock And Roll, To Love Again, Port-Au-Prince, Amor, Moonlight Enchantment, Nightingale, Nocturnal, Jungle Drums, Vereda Tropical, Hornblower's Serenade, Besame Mucho, Siboney, Nothing Ever Changes My Love For You.

PS, UK Repressed! A UK-only issue of what was previously available as a non-distributed CDR release on the Acid Mothers Temple CDR label (later reissued as a very limited LP on Swordfish). Jewel case packaging, with a completely unbelievable Yod-tribute sleeve. The music is in the realm of tranquil drone-intensive freak outs (electronics, moaning vocal sounds, processed murk), not at all in the rocking style of Kawabata's well known Acid Mother's Temple ensemble. A sensational artifact, presented to perfection.

Forster, Robert
Evangelist
PS, US Robert Forster's first album in 11 years, The Evangelist finds the Go-Betweens co-founder as winsome and haunting as ever. Nearly two years after the death of Grant McLennan, his fellow Go-Between and writing partner of 30 years, Forster has produced an album that is both wildly progressive and haunted by the ghost of his artistic soul mate. "Demon Days," co-written with McLennan shortly before he died, is an all too telling spine tingling journey into oblivion. "Pandanus" and "Did She Overtake You?" are lively juggernauts that delightfully reprise the rhythmic tensions of Spring Hill Fair. "The Evangelist" is a wistful cousin to "He Lives My Life" (from The Friends of Rachel Worth) and "From Ghost Town" is a deeply personal and poignant farewell to a lost brother. Throughout, The Evangelist is a masterpiece of honesty and compassion.

Frightened Rabbit
Midnight Organ Fight
PS, US sharp wit combined with a gift for nailing the perfect guitar-pop hook. Follow up to their limited debut "Sings the Greys" the band recorded "Midnight" with Peter Katis (Spoon, Interpol) in order to achieve the grandeur suited to the fervent ambition of their new songs. The result is a huge step forward for the band sonically, while they retain the acerbic, quirky lyrics they're becoming known for. PITCHFORK: "Midnight Organ Flight is full of rousing barnburners that flicker with soul, ballads that ache with masculine vulnerability, and Frightened Rabbit's best song yet, opener "The Modern Leper". Built on insistently downstroked guitars and drums that build from a gallop to a thundering crash, this Pixies-go-acoustic track swells with self-loathing. "Is that you in front of me/ Coming back for even more of exactly the same?/ You must be a masochist/ To love a modern leper on his last leg," sings Scott, and rarely has a song with such anthemic, air-drum-worthy fills been shot through with so much personal revulsion."

A true musical potpourri, but there is no denying the recognizable sound of both NIN & Queens of the Stone Age and the influences of the new folk scene such as Devendra Banhart, Johanna Newsom & Deerhoof.

Hayden
In Field & Town
PS, US ..[T]the guy makes merciless stabs of self-parody. 'I don't lock myself in a room and refuse to talk to my girlfriend for weeks at a time,' Hayden says. 'I'm definitely not a sort of hermit, weirdo character. I'm more the kind of guy who spends most of his day wasting time and complaining about things,' he says, muffling a giggle. 'I have long, long breakfasts, you know, from like noon until two at least, then I start complaining.' There is some truth to the mythology; over the course of his five stripped-back albums, his music and method took on a solitary shape. Recorded in Desser's studio and in woods north of Toronto, In Field and Town embodies this small-scale sensibility. Yearning with the tender, minor-key minimalism of 2001's Skyscraper National Park and the glowing acoustic arrangements of 2004's Elk-Lake Serenade, the album pitches his oddly personal whimseys against an intimate but complete instrumental backdrop. The pealing horns and tumbling pop rhythms of Where and When, wrangling guitars and piano of Did I Wake Up Beside You? are fine examples. . . But it's the wonderfully arranged Lonely Security Guard, an oddly narrated ode to a neighbourhood security guard told from the perspective of a would-be thief, which typifies his peculiar songwriting charms. "I just really enjoy coming up with a story that has a beginning, a middle and an end," he says. It's just that sometimes it's an end that you're not expecting. Like this super friendly-looking security guard being a really tough guy,' he laughs. 'I had a huge smile on my face when I came up with that.''-- Dan Rule, theage.com

I&Fused
Slow Eater
PS, FRANCE Autodidact, I&Fused is a genuine of sound machine. As a musician multi-instrumentalist, singer, author, compositor and producer, David Lavaysse seems not to want to stay or put himself on a particular classification but he keeps on touching all kind of styles with a sure ease. Like in his preceding albums, we finds in slow eater a lot of instruments (clarinet, piano, machines, guitars, percussions...) and compositions alternating between pop and electro, passing by the folk music with some winks to the hip hop... Each title is definitely produced with a smoothness and a rare elegance. I&Fused is a typical example of what the alternative music is still able to offer to us in France... I&Fused reveals us a personal and talented vision of a universal sound, with his thousand and one facets, subtle, light and fine.

July
July
PS, UK Having started out as a skiffle act from Ealing and called The Playboys they then became an R&B combo, The Tomcats. John (Speedy) Keen, (Thunderclap Newman) was in them for a while and then In 1966, The Tomcats went to Spain with a new line-up (one which become the future July one). As Los Tomcats, they got in the charts with four EPs, one of which was all in Spanish! They then returned to the UK in 1968, still basing themselves in Ealing and changed their name to July. As July, they recorded what later became one of the most sought-after British psychedelic sixties albums of all time. One that was originally released in the UK on Major Minor (MMLP/SMLP 29) in 1968 and also issued in USA/Canada on Epic (BN- 26416) and even released in Brazil (Musidisc Hi Fi 2.177). The album s main appeal is its haunting brand of psychedelia and Rev-Ola are delighted to announce that this special CD issue has four bonus tracks. The gorgeous package is also enhanced by a quantity of previously unpublished photographs and some highly-informative CD booklet notes by 60s pop-sike expert David Wells. Tony Duhig (guitarist) and John Field (keyboards, flute) went on to be in Jade Warrior and Tom Newman later released solo albums on Virgin and Decca. He also set up Branson's Manor Studios and engineered 'Tubular Bells' I and II! TRACKS: 1. MY CLOWN 2. DANDELION SEEDS 3. JOLLY MARY 4. HALLO TO ME 5. YOU MISSED IT ALL 6. THE WAY 7. TO BE FREE 8. Kid Loco/Jean-Christophe Menu
Oumupo 4
PS, US It was inevitable (and to be hoped) that Jean-Christophe Menu, already responsible for the collection's packaging, participates to one of the volumes as the author. Along with the self-taught Menu - the unforgettable "Meder" (Futuropolis), the series "Muno Comix" (Cornelius) or autobiographic work like "Livret de Phamille" (L'association), but also the recent lampoon "Plates-Bandes" (L'association) - who would better match as a partner than the former punk-activist Jean-Yves Prieur a.k.a. Kid Loco, who let himself be tempted by hip-hop, reggae and eventually downtempo ? Master of rhythm and melody, he affords a great fade-in fade-out overview of almost the entire catalog of Ici d'Ailleurs.

Jim
PS, US Jim will switch you on in the morning, move you on the dance-floor & take you down in the small hours. It's a bold, promiscuously diverse album, mixing up gospel grooves, sweetly sung & fiercely passionate soul, delicately moving ballads, thumping early R & B, synthed-up disco, & even a touch of 'hillbilly funk'. POPMATTERS: "This old-fashioned, newly-polished soul music is pretty much impossible to resist."

PS, GERMANY Probably one of the albums on Ad Noiseam which took the longest to complete. Begun years ago, Mad EP's fourth full length album sees this highly praised musician focus on low frequencies and everything which comes with them. Syncopated beats, guest vocals by Shadow Huntaz, MC Equivalant and others and the multi-instrumentation which has made Mad EP famous are all brought back on this artists's heaviest and most direct album to date.

Make Believe
Going To The Bone Church
PS, US LIMITED COLOR VINLY. A record that is as musical as it is raw, & as dense as it is simple. Vocally, Tim Kinsella is at his carnal best, slipping in & out of chants, growls, yelps bolstered by layers of backing vocals for the first time in the band's brief career. All the while the band beats along, riffing acute & obtuse rhombuses around him. Together they take the listener on a primitive & tribal trip & create something haunting, hypnotic, pulsing &, most importantly, original.

Married Monk, The
Elephant People
PS, FRANCE "Never being where they are expected: this is what seems to be the artistic catch phrase of The Married Monk. Unexpected successor of The Belgian Kick, this fifth album is the music of Elephant People, a pop opera that brings together emblematic figures of monstrosity. For this occasion, the guitarist and singer Christian Quermalet, the bass player Philippe Lebruman, the saxophonist Etienne Jaumet and the new drummer Nicolas Courret (Bed, Headphone), who are playing during representations, have prepared a soundtrack which is alternating exhilarating songs and transitions spoken by the show's actors. Incomparable French band pop singing in English, they have a strong fan base in Europe.

Matthews, Eric
Imagination Stage
PS, US Conscious craft drawn from a subconscious spark. Music conjured from "a deeper, more mysterious place," as he puts it. Dream pop in the truest sense of the phrase. "There's something new & different that's happening to me creatively," Matthews says. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Eric Matthews sounds rejuvenated on The Imagination Stage, only his fifth album in a dozen years but the third in relatively quick succession for the Empyrean label. But just when fans could start to worry that too much of Matthews' work was flooding the marketplace, he's broadened his palette, stretching the boundaries and beginning to work in more intriguing shades. Sometimes it's with a simple technique, as on the several instrumental passages that allow listeners to focus on the clever arrangements (and not worry about Matthews' usually similar-sounding vocals). But often it's the interwoven arrangements, harmonies, and interesting instrument choices that make The Imagination Stage such a wonderful record, encompassing everything from a tastefully bashing drum kit to an analog drum program to the type of subdued brass that has been a hallmark of Matthews' work since he debuted in 1995."

Meneguar
The In Hour
PS, US Switching instruments and experimenting with recording techniques, Meneguar has cooked up a totally unique (and surprising) record. The In Hour channels the spontaneity and aesthetics of Swell Maps, the pop hooks of the Zombies, and lyrical collage of Guided By Voices. Everything was home recorded at their little Xanadu in Brooklyn, Rear House, home base to Jeremy Earl's Woodsist label (Blues Control, Sic Alps, Wooden Wand, Jana Hunter) and the changing roster of Meneguar's alter egos (Woods, Shepherds). Only six months since their last record, The In Hour represents a serious departure that still holds true to the band's undeniable pop sensibility.

Millimetrik
Northwest Passage's New Era
PS, UK Pascal Asselin is a founder member of French Canadian dreampop outfit Below the Sea and half of Anglo-Canadian duo Glider. Pascal began recording under the name Millimetrik in 2003, uniting his love of atmospheric ambient (Biosphere, Murcof) with hip-hop rhythms and breaks. With his background as a drummer, Millimetrik's earlier albums "Variety is the Spice of Life" and "Deeper Transmissions" and "The Last Polar Bear on Earth" (all Statik Rek) featured intricately programmed beats with the music creating an otherworldly and often unsettling and chilly backdrop. Over the course of recent releases, such as "Cities EP" and "I Am You Are Me; Remixes and Unreleased" (both Make Mine Music), the atmospheres have slowly thawed and melody has come increasingly to the fore. On the new album "Northwest Passage's New Era", Pascal has ventured even further down this path and the music has a sense of emerging from darkness into the light. The intricately programmed beats are still present, but the emphasis is firmly on melody and structure, and the sound is rooted in hip-hop rather than ambient music. Featuring guest appearances by Ulrich Schnauss and Port-Royal amongst others, the album also sees the first vocals on a Millimetrik release courtesy of Sean Heenan of Auburn Lull and Marie Jorge, whose beautiful vocals grace the album's final track. With this new album, Millimetrik has exceeded the already very high standards of previous releases. "Northwest Passage's New Era" is a consistently enjoyable, engaging and varied listen that Make Mine Music is proud to release.

Narcophony
Play the Residents
PS, FRANCE Narcophony is not done with visiting houses, haunted by the memories of these last thirty years most frantic musicians. After Nurse With Wound, they are getting down to the mind-expanding work of the most phenomenal San Francisco pop combo: The Residents. Armed with a number of musicians balanced around the duet made by Eric Aldéa and Ivan Chiossone, with Christine Ott (collaborations with Radiohead, Yann Tiersen... - Martenot's waves) , François Cuilleron (ex-Bästard- guitars and violin) and Hasmig Fau (cello), Narcophony recycles 13 tracks chosen among the very first works of The Residents (from 1974 to 1985) with the same characteristic unrestrained energy of the avant-garde band. Reached by the playfulness of contemporary Kraftwerk, the band turns on an amazing switch from analogical to acoustic. Keeping most of the patterns for the timeless Ondes Martenot (father of electronic music), the band takes up the mischievous orchestrations with impulsive strings and other intrusions of rare instruments. A weird masterstroke that intensifies the most resourceful period of The Residents.

Night Marchers
See You In Magic
PS, US Debut album from RFTC/Jehu dude! ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "John Reis (aka Speedo) delivers exactly what you expect on every album that bears his name. Pure, hard, fun, and nasty rock & roll action. Rocket from the Crypt? Check. Drive Like Jehu? Check. The Sultans? Check. Hot Snakes? Yep. New band the Night Marchers? You'd better believe it. Teaming up with former Hot Snakes Gar Wood and Jason Kourkounis, and Tommy Kitsos of CPC Gangbangs, Reis delivers an album of rampaging hard rock that kicks hard and sticks with you like a monster hangover. The sound of See You in Magic is probably closest to that of the Sultans. The two bands share a light and nimble approach that RFTC lacked. They were a knockout blow; the Night Marchers are more likely to jab you in the solar plexus. Either way, by the end of the album you know you've been in a fight. The guitars are taut and fierce, the drums pounding but not overbearing, and the occasional shouted backing vocals mix well with Reis' powerful everyman vocal delivery. Reis' skill at crafting songs with hooky choruses has never deserted him and is strong as ever here... Add the Night Marchers to Speedo's roll of triumphs and feel free to rank See You in Magic as one of his finest moments. It's really that good."

Occasional Keepers, The
True North
PS, UK LTM present True North, the second album from The Occasional Keepers, an ongoing studio collaboration between songwriters Bobby Wratten (Field Mice, Trembling Blue Stars) and Carolyn Allen and Caesar (The Wake). True North was recorded and produced by the Keepers with Ian Catt (St Etienne) in London in February 2008. Guest musician Beth Arzy (Aberdeen, Trembling Blue Stars) features on The Life Of The Fields. Retaining plenty of acoustic, reflective elements from the previous album, this release adds experimental, song-based pop touches to great effect. Track listing: If The Ravens Leave/The Cricket Laced Midnight/Town Of 85 Lights/Leave The Secret There Forever/The Life Of The Fields/Factory Records/I've Realized/Snow And Feathers/Elsinore/A Distant Piano On A Foggy Night. Praise for The Occasional Keepers: "This Sarah supergroup lives up to the expectations that come from such an important meeting of musical minds, and there's a real synergy here" (Exclaim!); "Often the smallest touches have the greatest impact, like dropping a bomb on a calm hillside" (All Music Guide); "An album of rainy day melancholia and innocent beauty" (Leonard's Lair); "Lovely bubble-bath pop and slo-mo waltz" (Teletext). Ponies In The Surf
See You Happy
PS, US Ponies In The Surf is quietly one of a kind. Siblings and self proclaimed indie music nerds Alex & Camile live in Cambridge, MA though they're originally from Bogota, Columbia. The Ponies build perfect soft pop songs with elements Samba, Beatles, the more sophisticated folk set, the Pop Vocal traditionalists and they're very much akin to The Violent Femmes and Johnathan Richman in terms of song craft, a subtle humor and vulnerability. The Ponies' work is uniquely comforting and highly addictive. It is served with a rare passion and grace. It evokes nostalgia for the above mentioned while remaining firmly planted in its own special, almost timeless place. "After playing in rock bands for some time, Alexander McGregor decided at some point that he simply wanted to make some music that could even appeal to his grandmother. Joined by his sister Camille, the duo plays stripped-down folkish type music that sounds like it could have been created at any point in the past 40 years yet still feels fresh." --ALMOST COOL. "These powerfully quiet traditionalists perform folk songs with a pan-American touch. It's only a shame that music this delicate and warm doesn't garner more notice." -POPMATTERS

Reynolds, Ben
Two Wings
PS, US Glasgow, Scotland guitarist Ben Reynolds (ASHTRAY NAVIGATORS) has been a prominent player in & contributor to the UK's fertile underground psych/drone scene for many years. Reynolds puts his electric guitars aside in favor of exploring expressionist acoustic steel string terrain on his astonishing new solo recording. Entirely improvised, Two Wings effortlessly weaves shimmering melodic lines together to form spontaneous compositions of dazzling depth & clarity. Incorporating a variety of pacing techniques with his fingerpicking style, Reynolds explores a linearity that harkens back to the American ragas of Robbie Basho, while exposing Middle Eastern influences much like the acoustic trickery of Sir Richard Bishop.

Skullflower
Desire for a Holy War
PS, US Limited edition of 750. First volume in the URSK Series. Three panel jacket with original art by Stephen Kasner. SKULLFLOWER "Desire for a Holy War" Desire for a Holy War is mayhem piled on top of mayhem piled on top of squalls of caustic feedback. Furies spitting oaths of shrouded vengeance from ancient tongues. Plague riders dealing death on mounts of venomous ether, hooves pounding the wild earth. Matthew Bower may have reached a watershed with last year's Abyssic Lowland Hiss (Heavy Blossom) but it is with Desire that he has come to conquer. Never has Skullflower sounded so severe or remorseless. URSK SERIES. Utech Records has invoked a connate soul in visual artist Stephen Kasner to develop a second fine art series of cd releases for the label. The series will comprise nine volumes of 750 copies each over the course of 2008 beginning in April. Kasner has committed the bulk of his next year's output to painting original and exclusive canvases. His subject matter has yet to be disclosed but the artist has spoken in general terms of a new direction he wants to explore in his work. A package unique to the series has been designed to highlight Kasner's residuum and the accompanying music. The foundation of the series is the belief that a visual device can bind a disparate body of music in a meaningful way. The
genesis of this idea was first explored with photographer Max Aguilera-Hellweg in 2007 and the result was Utech Record's acclaimed Arc Series. Fruit borne from that venture has led to this stab at further examination. Kasner immediately saw value in the theory and agreed to help cultivate and refine it.

Sophia
Technology Won't Save Us
PS, US From lushly orchestrated instrumentals to pure pop-rock-noise & a dark lyrical depth rarely found in today's music, this is Robin Proper-Sheppard's (THE GOD MACHINE) most ambitious record to date. The initial limited-edition version will be released as a double-CD DigiPak including a 6 song bonus acoustic CD. BIG TAKEOVER: "I say this every time Robin Proper-Sheppard graces the world with a new album--and somehow it¹s always true--but this is the man¹s best album to date, another slice of truth and beauty from the former singer-guitarist for The God Machine... Here, Proper-Sheppard revisits a range of dynamics, arrangements and moods from all phases of his career, from Morricone-style instrumentals to funereal ballads to strutting riff-rock. The lyrics pierce your head and heart, the melodies stay with you long after the album has ended... Technology won¹t save us from it, but the very human voice contained within these songs just might."

Strategy
Music for Lamping
PS, US Strategy's Paul Dickow has been a longtime cornerstone player in Portland, Oregon's electronic and experimental music community. He was once a drummer in the punk group Emergency, a keyboard player in jazz/post-rock's Fontanelle, played drums and electronics in Nudge, DJs eclectic disco and techno sets, and also remixes and produces dance floor bangers as well as ambient, abstract pop expressions under his solo moniker Strategy. He has built up a name releasing acclaimed albums for Kranky and 12"s for labels such as ORAC (Seattle) and Dreck (London) and also by founding the premier Cascadian freedom music record label known as Community Library. For years Paul and Audio Dregs have been comrades and collaborators and now we are proud to bring you his latest offering that collects Strategy's rain-soaked chill out recordings and slow motion filtered dubscapes. These are the tracks rescued from the mornings after the dance parties and longer compositions collected from his studio in moss covered corners of green Cascadian forest caverns. "Music for Lamping contains six years' worth of music that can roughly be called ambient - perhaps "meditative" is a better word. All of this music combines my interest in blurring/expanding/clouding processes--such as granular synthesis, vocoding, and bucket-brigade delay--with happenstance sound sources, such as field recordings or a favorite record sitting around the studio. The earliest music dates to a 2002 CD that was never released, entitled Strategy At Beacon Rock, which was intended as a 'gentle' or 'atmospheric' treatment of plundered audio. The material from 2004 onwards dates to a period of soundwalks in my neighborhood of Northwest Portland (a perfect strolling zone). Taken altogether, these pieces form a traceable thread through my work where I use my usual raw materials to reach a more liquid, spontaneous end result." -Paul Dickow

Tape
Opera Plus
PS, SWEDEN Opera Plus is a reissue of Tape's 2002 full-length debut Opera (HAPNA 009CD), with three new tracks taken from the original 2002 sessions. Tape are Johan Berthling, Andreas Berthling and Tomas Hallonsten: guitars, laptop, pedals, synthesizers, harmonium, melodica, field recordings, percussion, harmonica, zither, piano, flute, bells, glockenspiel, accordion, trumpet, paper, styrofoam, yongmei. As Stephan Mathieu wrote at the time of this release, "Tape's music lives at the intersection of a 21st century chamber music and an imaginary folklore. Slowly passing by vast yellow rape fields and ancient, abandoned factories, the music on my headphones seems to fit almost too perfectly. The sun and nature are certainly core ingredients of Opera and its slowly floating melodies carry the spirit of travel, not on an aircraft, but submerged in a landscape instead." In the meantime, Tape have distilled their sound with their albums such as Milieu, Rideau, as well as collaborations with Tenniscoats more and more into an organic song-like format. While all of them are excellent, Tape's essence can be found in Opera. Listening to Opera again after almost six years, it proves to be a truly great and timeless album. Now in a digipak with new cover art.

Thomas Function
Celebration
US, PS ALL MUSIC GUIDE: Thomas Function is an odd name for a band, but then again, this is a pretty peculiar group. The garage band hails from (sweet home) Alabama, and its ebullient take on the '60s is shot through with Southern sensibility, from C&W to bluegrass, R&B to the blues... The album bristles with energy and the songs are studded with strong melodies and grand hooks, while the lyrics are much more thoughtful and downbeat than one would expect. Blitzing The Ballroom: 20 UK Power Glam Incendiaries
PS, UK As the '70s took hold of the UK, the colorful expectations of the '60s had all but faded away. The Op Art, the psychedelics and the Victorian militia had been replaced by the greys and browns of geometric wallpaper, the three-day week and the oh-so dull Heath/Wilson pendulum. Splashing a much-needed burst of posterpaint color around came the movement that was to be known as glam-rock. No one minded that its chief protagonists had been round the block a few times before: Marc Bolan, Gary Glitter, Alvin Stardust, Mud, The Sweet, Roy Wood and Slade had all been stomping around with varying degrees of success for many years. Tottering precariously around on silver platforms, made up like provocative pantomime dames, playing a strange drum-heavy confection based on rock & roll mixed with nursery rhyme simplicity, the pop world had its sparkling alternative to the head-nodding complexity of the double concept album. Here's a collection of splendid glam obscurities, all laced with a harder edge, as if to prove that, should the need ever arise, these artistes could more than match their progressive counterparts for rock sensibility. Twenty never-before comped glam-rock sparklers specially compiled by legendary psych musician and Psychic Circle label-head, Nick Saloman (The Bevis Frond). Shambles, Tiger, Angel, True Adventure, Change, Stumpy, Union Express, Abacus, Paul Ryder & Time Machine, Panther, Winston, Frenzy, Bullfrog, Pete Dunton, Tim Dandy, Giggles, Stephen, Screemer, Sakkarin and Fynnius Fogg.

Vincent, Gene
A Million Shades Of Blue
PS, UK Yes indeed! It's Sweet Gene Vincent! Do we need say more? What else do you need to know? Oh, OK then! Back in the dear dead days when singers of 30-ish weren't just about to form their first indie band, GENE, the man who had wowed America, challenged Elvis, launched Rock n Roll in Britain and France and inspired a generation, was seen in his native land as a bit of a has-been...his audience was the French arty intelligentsia and UK Teds...but there were still those who believed in Gene...one was Kama Sutra, the New York label who brought us The Lovin' Spoonful and Gene fanatics The Flamin' Groovies (and obliquely The Shangri-Las too, but that's another story...) In 1969 and 1970 they put Gene in their newly acquired LA studio with the cream of young session men to produce an album. Taking a cue from The Band, Bob Dylan, The Sir Douglas Quintet, and possibly fellow not as old as you might think rocker Dale Hawkins (who had just had an amazing album out himself!) Gene rose to the occasion bigtime! Possibly one of the most unexpected and astonishing albums of roots rock and Americana is what we have here...with Gene as on good form as ever! ** Another rediscovered forgotten classic from RevOla! ** Beautifully remastered By the lovely Nick Robbins...in true RevOla style! ** Ditto goes for artwork by Pepperbox! ** A must for anyone who ever had a heart...Gene Vincent! Does it get any better?? TRACKS: 1. SUNSHINE 2. I NEED WOMAN'S LOVE 3. SLOW TIMES COMIN' 4. DANSE COLINDA 5. GEESE 6. 500 MILES 7. LISTEN TO THE MUSIC 8. IF ONLY YOU COULD SEE ME TODAY 9. A MILLION SHADES OF BLUE 10. TUSH HOG 11. HOW I LOVE THEM OLD SONGS 12. HIGH ON LIFE 13. NORTH CAROLINA LINE 14. YOU CAN MAKE IT IF YOU TRY 15. OUR SOULS 16. THERE IS SOMETHING ON YOUR MIND 17. THE DAY THE WORLD TURNED BLUE 18. BOPPIN' THE BLUES 19. LOOKING BACK 20. OH LONESOME ME 21. THE WOMAN IN BLACK

Welles, Orson
Your Obedient Servant
PS, UK Orson Welles is a titantic figure in popular culture. Before Kane, before Ambersons, The Lady From Shanghai and The Third Man; Before Touch of Evil, his astounding Othello, Chimes At Midnight and F for Fake, Welles created the sensational War of the Worlds broadcast that terrified a nation of American radio listeners. While Hollywood beckoned, Welles and his company, The Mercury Theatre continued to produce compelling radio drama that still sounds extraordinary. Make no mistake, if radio held sway over us like it did during its Golden Age, much of Welles' work in the medium would be as venerated as Kane or any of the other creative triumphs that were to follow. The Hitch-hiker and the chilling Search for Henri Le Fevre were written by Lucille Fletcher. Sredni Vashtar is the work of the inscrutable late nineteenth century English writer, Saki The Music for all three performances was composed by long-time Welles (and Hitchcock) collaborator Bernard Herrmann

Zero
Joke Box
PS, FRANCE Obviously, Zëro's music has more to do with creativity than with staying in the beaten path of rock with a specific identity. It's as much Jack Berrocal and Gene Vincent playing a "Drag Queen blues" under ecstasy and classic Devo's envigorating "Automotown / Space girl blues" as it is the krautrock by Can and Kraftwerk in "Luna Park", an entertaining song which provokes an addictive cerebral experience. You can also sense Neurotic Pavement, Eternally Young Wankers Sonic Youth, and a bunch of other freaks, who, all off the beaten path have constantly re-written the language of rock with intelligence and singularity. Each title escapes from the previous one, unclassifiable, escaping from the routine, leaving the listener with a smile and a chuckle. The "Joke Box" is like the smirk of an illusionist about to open his magic box. Pleasure and surprise are always present. The name Zëro, perhaps without the humble group member's realizing it, is well suited to the fact that their music is at the origin of this genre of music. "Joke Box" is a superb anthology.

Zoroaster
S-T
PS, US Rises up from unfathomable depths, propelled by tsunamis of doom, submerged in viscous sludge. Behold cyclopean concoctions such as "Mons Venus" & "Defile," which steadily castigate the senses w/well-varied bouts of grinding dirges & hypnotic grooves, their often cyclical strumming through slothful power chords appears so simple, yet also so devastating. By comparison, the insistently pounding advance of "Bullwhip" may as well be thrash metal - recalling sludge kings Eyehategod as much as the other tracks do extreme doomsters like Sleep & Unearthly Trance. Features an exclusive bonus track.

Black Angels, The
Directions to See a Ghost (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 13TH)
PS, US From deep in the heart of Texas, armed with the home-grown mantra "Turn On, Tune In, Drone Out," The Black Angels ring real and rugged like a crimson full moon-lit night. Their self proclaimed "Native American Drone 'N' Roll" genre has progressed from communal living and the members' eclectic upbringings. This is heavy-duty psychedelic rock with an incessant primitive beat that echoes the spirit of the 13th Floor Elevators and early Stones. "Directions To See A Ghost" is the second full-length album from Austin's darkest droners. With tidal rhythms and rasping epics, "Directions To See A Ghost" is a driving, psychedelic masterpiece that churns through 72 minutes and 11 tracks. This highly anticipated follow-up to the band's 2006 critically acclaimed debut will leave listeners buzzing.

Cud
Elvis Belt (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 13TH)
PS, UK Formed in Leeds in 1986, CUD went on to forge one of the more interesting and indefinable sounds of the late 80s / early 90s indie scene. Fusing a catchy pop sensibility with danceable grooves and intelligent and often humorous lyrics, they soon became firm independent favorites and began releasing records on Leeds based Reception Records in 1987, very quickly catching the ear of John Peel and becoming a regular fixture of his broadcasts. Three quality singles into their career, the band secured a deal with Imaginary Records, where they continued a fine run of singles and eventually released their debut album. Capitalizing on the band's underground success, in June 1990 Imaginary followed this with this fantastic compilation of their early releases, topping several independent charts in the process and further establishing an already strong reputation. Some eighteen years later, Elvis Belt is updated and reissued here by Cherry Red, together with a wealth of rarities and unreleased tracks from those formative years and beyond. This release features the original album in its entirety, carefully remastered and now sitting comfortably alongside Elvis Handbag, an additional disc conceived by the band as a sister album to the original release and containing a number of further B-Sides, Peel Session recordings and cover versions (including the band's legendary take on Bohemian Rhapsody, previously only available on the ultra-rare Alvin Lives in Leeds compilation). This release (along with two more Cherry Red CUD Reissues) comes hot on the tails of 2006's Rich and Strange The Anthology compilation and 2007s well received re-issues of two more of the band's albums, all of which reminded the world just how great this band were and generated a well deserved resurgence in interest. A UK tour is scheduled for March to promote this and its accompanying releases. TRACKS: ELVIS BELT 1. SLACK TIME 2. MAKE NO BONES 3. TREAT ME BAD 4. PUNISHMENT REWARD 5. RELATIONSHIPS 6. Cud
Leggy Mambo (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 13TH)
PS, UK Following the release of their debut When In Rome, Kill Me and 1990 s Elvis Belt compilation (CDMRED355), Leeds indie heroes CUD set to work on their next album for Imaginary Records. Recorded during the Summer of 1990, Leggy Mambo proved to be a step in all the right directions, cementing the sound developed over their previous releases and capitalizing on the band s pop sensibilities to provide their most immediately accessible collection of songs to date. Produced by XTCs Dave Gregory and released in October 1990, the album spawned the well-received singles Robinson Crusoe and Magic (both of which might have achieved greater success had they been released on a larger label) and generated a huge amount of industry interest, eventually leading to their signing with A & M the following year. This Cherry Red Gold top Copy version of the album features the newly remastered original disc, as well as a collection of demos and alternate versions, all of which have been hand picked by the band themselves. This release (along with two more Cherry Red CUD Reissues) comes hot on the tails of 2006 s Rich and Strange The Anthology compilation and 2007's well received reissues of two more of the band's albums, all of which reminded the world just how great this band were and generated a well deserved resurgence in interest. Cud
Showbiz (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 13TH)
PS, UK Having departed the independent world and signed with A&M in 1991, CUD proceeded to pursue the commercial success their previous releases had hinted at with 1992's Asquarius. Following this, their first hit album, proved to be the band s longest break between releases (largely the result of some inter-label disharmony), but they eventually emerged in 1994 with Showbiz. Recorded primarily in Scotland (at a studio owned by Fish of Marillion fame, no less), this record saw their sound mature and showcased a broader range of songwriting styles than previous efforts. It was well received on its release in April 1994, garnering favorable reviews, and spawned two UK hit singles in Neurotica and One Giant Love. Sadly, though, the album proved to be the band's last officially released effort as the pressures of life on a major and all that it entails took their toll on the band. This remastered version also includes a number of B-Sides from the album's single releases, as well as some unreleased out-takes and demo versions, including material intended for their next album, which hasn't seen the light of day before now. This release (along with two more Cherry Red CUD Reissues) comes hot on the tails of 2006's Rich and Strange The Anthology compilation and 2007's well received re-issues of two more of the band's albums, all of which reminded the world just how great this band were. A UK tour is also scheduled for March to promote this and it's accompanying releases. TRACKS: 1. SOMEBODY SNATCHED MY ACTION 2. ESP 3. WAVING AND DROWNING 4. STICKS AND STONES 5. MYSTERY DEEPENS 6. SLIP AWAY 7. ONE GIANT LOVE 8
