American Mars
Western Sides
PS, US Hailing from Detroit, yet having not a trace of the Motor City
rock element, their ethereal sound is an impassioned & moody brand
of indie-Americana. Under the direction of the band's pedal steel
player & producer DAVID FEENY (Blanche, Loretta Lynn, The White
Stripes), the band's ranging impulses are brought together to create
something more than the sum of its songs.

Arbol
You Traveled My Heart Inside Out
PS, SPAIN Arbol´s 3rd release "You Travelled my Heart Inside
Out" is out now. Miguel Marín, aka Arbol, continues to
walk a path that the enigmatic lushness of his previous work cannot
erase. Where a clearing in the forest of "Dreams made of paper"
(Lejos Discos, 2005) forced us to linger over songs that poured down
on us as a sudden and marvelous light before continuing on our mottled
passage, the select track of "You Travelled my Heart Inside Out"
opens like a delta to new and wide pastures, bringing calm waters
to soak the feet of the city. For this new release, Miguel has collaborated
with Suzy Mangion, D-fried and the Japanese singer Eri Makino. It
was recorded between 2004 and 2007 in London, Barcelona and Tokyo
and confirms the crucial role played by Miguel Marín in the
development of imaginary soundtracks as an independent musical genre.
"You Travelled my Heart Inside Out" shows the influences
that Arbol´s music has been subject to in recent years as he
moved between three completely different cities, three distinct ways
of seeing music and life.

Baja
Wolfhour
PS, US Daniel Vujanic´s third full-length release under the
alias Baja, entitled, intensively displays the composer/musician´s
exciting approach towards a "free electronica" genre. Fusing
stripped-down folk, (free-)jazz, twisted pop, electroacoustic sound,
maximized-minimalism, indietronics, eerie chamber music and a portion
of sedative post-post-rock, "Wolfhour" plays with postmodern
expectations as much as possible while avoiding pretentious, highbrow
implications. There is at least as much ear-friendly repetition as
there is stunning fragmentation. Vujanic´s compositions range
from psychedelic piano ambience to sunny uptempo-pop, from electronic
jazz fusion to cryptic sample ruins. Leitmotifs appear, evolve and
fall apart into transcribed bits of data nebula. Beginnings sound
like ends and vice versa. Sounds teleport. Comments on Baja's Sound:
"Mirroring the obstinacy and arbitrary nature of human emotions,
Vujanic is using electronic music in a way that makes it less a statement
about media or a contemporary discussion about subverting conventional
songwriting than a tool of matter-of-factness..." - Coke Machine
Glow "If the indie rock just isn't getting it done for you anymore,
Baja's enveloping, intangible compositions may be just the guide you
need to more engaging musical territory. Tiny Mix Tapes ...beautifully
strange thing in between postrock, notebookindie, jazzy bitparts and
occasional guitar eruptions and - yes, indeed - pop..." (10 points)
- VISIONS Magazine.

Battle of Land and Sea
S-T
PS, US To describe the sound of The Battle of Land & Sea, one
might call up images of abandoned sea-worn ships floating through
a thick coastal fog. And upon first listen you might call to mind
Cat Power, or the soft glow of Songs of Green Pheasant. But eventually,
you start to hear what makes the music of Portland based Sarah O'Shura
so special. You get a glimpse of a world through the eyes of a someone
on a musical pilgrimage, whether the tales are laden with sorrow or
joy, they are enchanting & hopeful. Spooky & beautiful...calling
out all the old ghosts from past recordings on beautifully warbled
vinyl, they recreate an old jazz club atmosphere but with a little
sawdust on the floor.

Bell, The
Make Some Quiet
PS, US The Bell's new album Make Some Quiet might take you back to
a time when you were first discovering bands that acted like the ideal
soundtrack to your post-teenage life. We think of Echo and the Bunnymen
and The Cure, on our trip down fond memory lane... NPR: "The
Swedish pop group The Bell doesn't have a name for its drum machine,
but if the Bunnymen are going to deny Echo its place in history, this
new trio should snap it up. It's not just The Bell's drum machine
that gives it a right to the Echo name. The group's wiry guitar-rock
also recalls many of the bands that came up in the wake of, or were
contemporaries to, the Bunnymen, such as House of Love, The Mighty
Lemon Drops and The Church. The Bell's debut CD, Make Some Quiet,
draws on these influences throughout, and modern music fans will likely
hear Interpol in the group's post-punk pop."

Biirdie
Catherine Avenue
PS, US A big, stunning Great American Rock Record. The band spins
sweeping anthems told in California semi-gloss, with twinges of West
Coast Country and big-hearted Southern balladry. It's an album about
place and location, about the way that geography affects us. California
itself figures heavily as a character on the record; two of the band's
members are Southern ex-pats and the lyrics often address the bewilderment
of finding oneself transplanted to Los Angeles. If you need musical
analogues then we hear Fleetwood Mac, Grandaddy, CSNY, Rilo Kiley,
and Brill Building pop, but that's by no means a complete list. This
is ambitious orchestral music decked out in gorgeous harmonies, ringing
pianos, and some pretty killer guitar work that knows a thing or two
about dynamism. It knows when to take a breather, and it knows when
to go for the knockout. 3HIVE REVIEW: "Biirdie brings the heartache

Bodies Of Water
Ears Will Pop & Eyes Will Blink
PS, US BODIES OF WATER started in DAVID METCALF and MEREDITH ARTHUR'S
closet. They were newly married and lived in a very small house. The
closet was the only place to put the computer that they used for recording.
They eventually formed a musical group to play David's songs. Meredith
figured out the piano, and their friends Kyle Gladden and Jessie Conklin
learned to play the bass and drums, respectively. In the ensuing years,
the four have learned to deftly spin those threads which inevitably
weave their way through every Bodies of Water song: ebullient group
singing, melodic invention, thundering polyrhythms, and sublime dramatic
tension. "Ears Will Pop & Eyes Will Blink" is their
first full-length record, and the first release from the band's own
THOUSAND TONGUES label. The songs stray from verse-chorus structure
but are engaging and memorably crafted, drawing on an admixture of
traditions; the transcendent intensity of gospel, brutish gusto of
punk rocking, earnest idiosyncrasy of American folk, sonic inclusiveness
of tropicalia, planned jamming of prog, and the sincere bombast of
musical theatre. These songs can be likened to a sort of emotional
topiary; an unruly living mess lent its shape by the psychic framework
around which it grows. Since its inception Bodies of Water have added
an auxiliary corps of musicians and when playing in L.A. their ranks
can swell to as many as 11; hitting, blaring, strumming and bowing
away. The four core members' vocal synchronicity remains the group's
hallmark. Their calls, responses, shouts and harmonies ride above
and around a retaining wall of sound in a fleeting burst of neo-tent
revival immediacy.

Bonnie "Prince" Billy
Wilding in the West
PS, JAPAN New import-only live album from BPB! ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Recorded
in California in 2007, Wilding in the West is a live Bonnie "Prince"
Billy document, incorporating 14 ragged-but-right songs. His band
includes guitarist Emmett Kelly, bassist Aram Stith, drummer Alex
Neilson, and keyboard player Azita, plus Dawn McCarthy and Paul Oldham
on vocals. The material comes largely from 2003's Master and Everyone
and 2006's The Letting Go, not so very far away from 2005's live album
Summer in the Southeast (which even has a similar design scheme).
Billy is an impassioned performer in a live context, and while the
quiet beauty of songs from The Letting Go and Master and Everyone
is what made them so powerful in the studio, they're not without their
charms here."

Carroll, Barton
Lost One
PS, US The Lost One is a collection of twelve cinematic country songs
by Barton Carroll. Since 2002, Barton Carroll has toured and recorded
extensively with Crooked Fingers and Eric Bachmann, playing guitar,
steel guitar, and upright bass. Carroll has also toured, playing various
instruments with Azure Ray, Dolorean, and Micah P. Hinson. The album
title, The Lost One, was stolen from one of the classic films of the
Noir canon, a genre that Carroll is hooked on. Like the film, the
songs tell stories of souls who, burdened by their past, fear they
will not be redeemed. Carroll's sardonic and self effacing wit is
evident. Musically, the record is a mixture of the mountain music
that Carroll grew up hearing in Western North Carolina, and the sweet,
sad, melodic sensibility of Alex Chilton. Carroll has a sincere, durable
voice well suited for storytelling and folk songs. The Lost One was
produced by Martin Feveyear, who engineered and produced the 2005
Crooked Fingers release, Dignity and Shame. Feveyear is a veteran
producer and engineer, having worked with such artists as Mark Lanegan,
Damien Jurado, and John Wesley Harding.

Celletti, Alessandra
Way Out
PS, UK LTM is proud to announce a new studio album from Alessandra
Celletti, the virtuoso Italian composer/pianist whose previous CDs
include acclaimed interpretations of works by Glass, Satie and Gurdjieff.
Way Out is Alessandra's third album of original material, following
Overground (1997) and Chi Mi Darà le Ali (2006). Recorded in
Rome in 2007, Way Out marks an innovative exploration of several musical
styles, including vocal tracks sung by Alessandra as well as a number
of her exquisite solo piano compositions. She is joined on most of
the tracks by drummer Fabio Ferri, while Renzo Pin provided English-language
lyrics. Stand-out tracks include Dear To Me, Burning and Hundred Points,
the latter a future pop classic complemented by a brilliant animated
video clip made by Tony Sbarbaro. A unique set that defies classification,
Way Out also features one bonus song, the beautiful title track from
Alessandra's previous artist album, Chi Mi Darà le Ali. The
memorable cover image is the painting Pensando alla Guerra by artist
Isobel Blank. Short biography: Alessandra Celletti studied piano at
the Santa Cecilia Music Conservatory in Rome . After graduating she
continued her studies with Vera Gobbi Belcredi, specializing in French
piano works of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. In 1994 she
released Les sons et les parfums, an album of pieces by Debussy, Ravel
and Satie. Since then she has followed an irregular artistic path,
characterized by sudden departures from classical music. Her second
album, Viaggio a Praga, an exploration of the work of Bohemian composers,
saw Alessandra awarded a scholarship by the Czech Republic in 1997.
On returning to Italy she began working with Kha Records. Her collection
Esoterik Satie proved hugely popular in France , and Gnossienne #1
was used by Guy Ritchie in his 2005 movie Revolver. Alessandra is
now preparing to release two new albums. The Golden Fly will appear
in Italy in October 2007, and Way Out by LTM in January 2008.

Chico Hamilton Quintet/Elmer Bernstein
OST: Sweet Smell Of Success
PS, UK One of the most important films of the fifties, Sweet Smell
Of Success boasts one of the great jazz scores; a combination of abstract
jazz themes written and performed by the Chico Hamilton Quintet and
a furious orchestral score by the masterful Elmer Bernstein. These
albums were released seperately in 1957 - both became very considerable
rarities - and are here combined in a single edition in digital format
for the first time. Sweet Smell Of Success is memorable for the vicious
performances of Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis and its uniquely nasty
view of the tough underbelly of New York fifty years ago. It was directed
by Alexander mackendrick ('The Ladykillers' 'Whisky Galore' 'The Man
In The White Suite' 'Mandy') Its audience is with jazz and film buffs
and the eternally stylish; strong export potential everywhere.

Venus On Earth
PS, US There is virtually no other band in the world playing "Khmer
Rock," the style of 1960s Cambodian rock derived from Armed Forces

eleven original songs that expand on the band's sound but will please
hardcore fans of both the group & the genre. PREFIX MAG: "Though
constantly hailed by local outlets like the Los Angeles Times as the
city's most "original pop band," the Cambodian-American
psyche-surf rock quintet has sat patiently at the precipice of a national
break for several years now. The group shifted into overdrive the
last two years: an appearance on the Broken Flowers soundtrack; a
documentary about singer Chhom Nimol's homecoming and the band's first
trip to Cambodia, called Sleepwalking Through the Mekong; and now
its third album, Venus on Earth. On it, Nimol's gorgeous Khmer and

Dolenz, Jones, Boyce & Hart
Same
PS, UK Almost immediately after the demise of The Monkees in 1970,
there was industry clamour for a reunion and publisher Christian Dewalden
came forward with an offer to finance the project. Micky Dolenz and
Davy Jones were enthusiastic but as Mike Nesmith wasn't interested
and Peter Tork couldn't be found a kind of pseudo-Monkees was created
enlisting the services of gifted songwriting team of Tommy Boyce and
Bobby Hart, who had written The Monkees first number one 'Last Train
To Clarksville', 'The Monkees Theme (Hey, Hey We're The Monkees)'
and '(I'm Not Your) Stepping Stone'. So Dolenz, Jones, Boyce &
Hart was born. With the Monkees logo under copyright and not available
for their use, the foursome set off on tour as 'the great golden hits
of the Monkees - the guys who wrote 'em and the guys who sang 'em.'
DJBH made its first public appearance on July 4, 1975 at six flags
over mid-America in St. Louis, Missouri, where they were met by 12,500
of the same screaming fans who had followed the Monkees 10 years previously.
Performing a raft of Monkee hits (Peter Tork had joined DJBH onstage
at Disneyland) the band appeared on 'American Bandstand' and 'Don
Kirshner's rock concert' and toured the States for a year before heading
to the far east. They have the distinction of being the first American
band to play in Thailand (they had to cut their hair to be allowed
into the country!). The success of the American tour secured a contract
with capitol records. The subsequent 'Dolenz Jones Boyce & Hart'
was produced by Boyce & Hart and though light and very pop, is
regarded as the most coherent Monkeerelated release since 1967¹s
'Pisces Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones'.

PS, US So most of the kids in Falkoping like to pimp out their Volvos,
hang around in a parking lot, and maybe form a heavy metal band. There's
not too much else to do 250 miles from Stockholm, in a town where
the express train passes but doesn't stop. Heck, it's even 2 hours
from Gothenburg. Fortunately though, the Drawbacks had other ideas...
With one foot firmly placed on the Swedish west coast, and the other
somewhere in the American indie-rock scene, the Drawbacks craft a
brand of hooky and dynamic guitar pop. Tobias (guitar & lead vocals),
Wilhelm (bass & vocals), Johan (drums & vocals), Klas (guitar
& vocals), and Martin (keyboards) have been playing for several
years, gigging both in Sweden and abroad. As Tobias says, they "spent
a considerable amount of time learning how to deliver some kind of
emotional context" through their songs, and they've gotten quite
good at it. After a few self-released demos, Slightly Less Vague is
the Drawbacks' first official release. We hope you enjoy it as much
as we do.

Durutti Column, The
Circuses & Bread
PS, UK LTM is proud to announce the release of four expanded CDs by
The Durutti Column, the legendary Factory Records ensemble formed
and fronted by virtuoso guitarist/composer Vini Reilly. Circuses &
Bread was originally released by the Factory Benelux label in April
1986, and features ten tracks written and performed by Vini Reilly,
together with drummer Bruce Mitchell. Stand-out tracks include All
That Love & Maths Can Do and the single Tomorrow. This expanded
edition of Circuses & Bread also features ten bonus tracks, including
the rare Japanese single For Noriko/Love Fading, compilation album
tracks Verbiers and The Aftermath, and four previously unreleased
tracks from the cancelled 1983 album Short Stories For Pauline. The
bonus cuts also include the rarely heard 1983 single I Get Along Without
You Very Well, a Hoagy Carmichael cover sung by Lindsay Reade and
dedicated to her former husband, the late Anthony H. Wilson (Factory
Records founder and Durutti Column manager). The booklet restores
the original cover design by 8vo. Artist biography: Manchester native
Vini Reilly formed The Durutti Column in 1978, recording his debut
album The Return of the Durutti Column the following year with producer
Martin Hannett, a set of delicate instrumental tracks housed in an
abrasive sandpaper sleeve. Subsequent landmark albums include LC (1981),
Without Mercy (1984), The Guitar & Other Machines (1987), Sex
& Death (1993), Fidelity (1996) and Someone Else's Party (2003).
A prolific recording artist in his own right (usually with drummer
Bruce Mitchell), Reilly has also guested on records by Morrissey,
Olive and Holly Johnson. For many years the group were managed by
the late Anthony H. Wilson, founder of Factory Records.

Egg
The Civil Service
PS, UK EGG were exponents of the so-called "Canterbury"
style of rock music and were focused around the compositional and
keyboard playing skills of Dave Stewart (later in HATFIELD & THE
NORTH) and Mont Campbell and Clive Brooks. The band recorded two superb
albums for Decca Records between 1969 & 1971 before going their
separate ways. In 1974 they recorded their final album for the newly
established Virgin Record label. Featuring guest musicians such as
STEVE HILLAGE and members of the unique HENRY COW, "The Civil
Surface" is now regarded as a classic of the "Canterbury"
and "Progressive" genres. This ESOTERIC RECORDINGS release
has been remastered from the original tapes and is certain to the
many who made the reissues of EGG's previous work such a success.

Abyssal
PS, US Following their acclaimed fourth album, "Insomniac Doze",
Japan's ENVY return with this face-melting four-song EP. Though acting
as a stop-gap between "Insomniac Doze" and their eagerly
anticipated next full-length, "Abyssal" sounds more like
the missing link between the driving, cacophonous force of their breakthrough
third album, "A Dead Sinking Story", and the lush, cinematic
tones of "Insomniac Doze". In fact, were it not for its
somewhat brief half-hour running time, "Abyssal" would be
the ideal Envy album, marrying their vast influences into a transcendent,
almost romantic sound that is rarely heard or felt in heavy music.

All The Footprints You've Ever Left and the Fear Expecting
PS, US Originally released in 2001 on respected Japanese punk label
H.G. FACT, "All the Footprints You've Ever Left and the Fear
Expecting Ahead" introduced ENVY to Americans when it was licensed
for limited release in 2003 on DIM MAK RECORDS. Their original pressing
sold out almost immediately, and the album has been scarcely available
ever since. The vinyl now regularly fetches over $100 on eBay, and
the CD is equally difficult to score without paying increasingly undesirable
import fees. Along with their now-legendary follow-up, "A Dead
Sinking Story", All the Footprints is widely regarded as an innovative
high-water mark for hardcore. These two albums are justifiably viewed
as modern hardcore classics whose monumental footsteps created an
unending ripple.

The Evening Descends
PS, US "The Evening Descends"Š and worlds collide.
First you hear the prodigious musical skill: the deft guitar work,
the clever pop sensibility, the wild arrangements. But then on other
end of the spectrum there is the innocent and youthful charm of a
trio of lost boys who seem to have no business making music with such
maturity and sophistication. Taken together, you have EVANGELICALS,
a wholly demented ensemble from Norman, OK. Dabbling in glam, slipping
in a little funk and soul, drinking the psychedelic Kool-aid, blasting
the synths, cranking up the guitars, and wrapping it all up with a
dose of pop smarts, "The Evening Descends" is the first
great album of 2008.

PS, UK ANDY FAIRWEATHER LOW's CLASSIC PROGRESSIVE ALBUM - NOW 24-BIT
REMASTERED WITH 6 BONUS TRACKS. Following the demise of AMEN CORNER,
Andy Fairweather Low and fellow musical cohorts Blue Weaver, Clive
Taylor and Dennis Byron underwent a musical transition into the band
FAIR WEATHER. Heading into a "Progressive" direction the
band adopted a harder edge and were the first act to sign to RCA Records'
progressive imprint NEON (an attempt to rival Philips' VERTIGO label).
Perhaps the most successful NEON signing, the band secured a UK TOP
TEN hit in "Natural Sinner" before releasing their sole
album, "Beginning from an End". Featuring guest contributions
from DAVE EDMUNDS on "I Hear You Knockin'", although the
album was a success in Europe, FAIR WEATHER lasted a mere 13 months
before disbanding. This ESOTERIC reissue gathers together the album

PS, UK GARY FARR's LONG LOST CLASSIC FOLK ROCK ALBUM - NOW 24-BIT
REMASTERED FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES WITH BONUS TRACK. "Strange

rock genres, cited by some as a minor masterpiece. In the late 60's
Gary Farr made the transition from leader of R&B outfit The T-Bones
to a noted singer-songwriter. Recording an album for Marmalade Records,
Farr then signed to CBS Records in 1970, recording this sole album
for the label. Sessions featured contributions from RICHARD THOMPSON
on lead guitar and leading lights of the underground MIGHTY BABY.
Unavailable on CD for many years, "Strange Fruit" is a record
made by an often overlooked singer-songwriter made available once

Fessenden
v1.1
PS, US Joshua Convey, Stephen Fiehn, and Steven Hess (On, Pan American,
Haptic) have been actively writing and performing as Fessenden since
2004. This Chicago/New York-based electro-acoustic trio creates distinct,
atmospheric and progressive sound collages, at times weaving quietly
subtle textures against harsh moments of volume, or low hums and buzzes
against crisp percussion while drones interplay with staccato chords.
"v1.1" represents their first release of studio-recorded
material. An exercise in restraint, where hypnotic and atmospheric
palettes create a vague sense of foreboding, this release engages
the acute listener with new concepts of structure and texture. Praise
for Fessenden: "Playing on a rusty knife edge, these artists
mould a new genre of inquisitive reduction of technical abuse..."
-Touching Extremes "Contemplative music that combines the best
of improvised music, real instruments and yet manages to sound so
micro-sound." -Vital Weekly "Like drifting Arctic waters
in an atomic sub, slowly diving, headset plugged directly into the
hull."- Avant Music News "One of the more patient ensembles
I've heard, Fessenden members seem to be in no hurry to move things
along here...just a few compass degrees this way or that...Fessenden

Finn, Liam
I'll Be Lightning
PS, US Debut album from the spawn of Crowded House's Neil Finn. ALL
MUSIC GUIDE: I'll Be Lighting finds Liam coming into his own as a
singer/songwriter not unlike how Neil did around the time of True
Colours, a remarkable parallel in musical development that, when combined
with the passing similarity in their songwriting styles, can perhaps
tie Liam a little too closely to his father. Like his dad, Liam has
an ear for hooks and a predilection for melodic craft, but he is not
only his own man, he is certainly the product of his own generation,
raised on classic pop dating back to the Beatles but obsessed with
indie singer/songwriters of the '90s, specifically Elliott Smith.
I'll Be Lightning has the same spare, dreamy qualities of Smith's
music, but Liam Finn isn't as haunted as Smith, even if he has a similar
knack for floating melodies. Despite a fair share of brokenhearted
ballads here, this isn't an overly melancholy album; it can be comforting
in its spells of sadness, partially because they're balanced by lighter
material that meshes with the slower, sadder songs to give this depth,
a richness in lyric and music uncommon to young singer/songwriters....
The 14 songs here seem stronger upon each listen, with the songs soon
seeming indelible. This kind of gift is rare, but it has been passed
on from father to son in a way that is similar yet quite different
and equally valuable, as this excellent debut makes plain."

Fireflies
Goodnight Stars, Goodnight Moon
PS, SWEDEN Fireflies is Lisle Mitnik. He grew up in the tundras of
New England playing classical piano and one day he moved to California
to go to school and decided to start writing songs. He bought a porta-studio

of the 1980s and 90s with his unrefined knowledge of classical arrangement.
He try to craft each song into a tiny snow-globe-sized universe you

Handsome Ned
Name Is Ned
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "A two-disc anthology may seem a little
extreme for an artist who never released a full album during his lifetime.
However, in the case of the Handsome Ned set The Name is Ned, it is
a welcome introduction to a nearly forgotten Canadian singer/songwriter.
When Handsome Ned died in 1987 at the age of 29, he left behind a
wealth of recordings, from studio tracks to live recordings and radio
appearances... A fairly even mix of originals and covers and an impressive
array of guests. Murray McLauchlan shows up on a version of Johnny
Cash's "I Still Miss Someone," Lydia Lunch can be heard
hyping Handsome Ned's radio show before a live, acoustic version of
"Sea of Heartbreak," and for the finale, Blue Rodeo invites
Handsome Ned onstage at the Horseshoe Tavern to sing the Merle Haggard
classic "Tonight the Bottle Let Me Down." However, while
the cover songs have a charm of their own and help to shed light on
Handsome Ned's influences, it's the original songs that display the
depth of Handsome Ned's talent... Clearly a labor of love for those
involved (Handsome Ned's brother contributed the liner notes), is
a worthy reminder of a talented Canadian artist."

Heaven
Brass Rock 1
PS, UK CLASSIC PROGRESSIVE JAZZ ROCK ALBUM REISSUED ON CD OFFICIALLY
FOR THE FIRST TIME- 24-BIT REMASTERED FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES.
Heaven, a jazz rock group from Portsmouth, burst forth onto the British
rock scene in 1970 when they appeared at the legendary Isle of Wight
festival sharing a bill with The Who, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix et al.
Making a stunning debut, the band (now managed by festival organiser
Rikki Farr), soon secured a recording deal with CBS Records who signed
the band for a large advance. The resulting double album "Brass
Rock 1" appeared in 1971, adorned in a lavish fold-out sleeve.
Well received critically, the album failed to achieve the expected
success and Heaven soon disbanded, leaving behind a fine example of
classic jazz rock. Officially released on CD for the first time, this
Esoteric Recordings reissue is digitally remastered from the original
master tapes and restores the artwork of the album in full.

Helio Sequence
Keep Your Eyes Ahead
PS, US After 3 albums and ten years of touring and recording, The
Helio Sequence (Brandon Summers and Benjamin Weikel) have recorded
their most dynamic, extraordinary work to date. Keep Your Eyes Ahead
marries the Portland duo's signature layered keyboards and impossibly
big guitars with crisp songwriting and a newfound appreciation for
minimalism. The finger picking on "Shed Your Love" is backed
by exquisite strings and ambient noise, but Brandon's serene, self-assured
delivery remains front and center. While songs from the band's early
releases spanned up to 7 minutes, even the longest, lushest, catchiest
track on Keep Your Eyes Ahead (fiery anthem "Hallelujah")
clocks in at 4 and a half minutes, evidence of just how refined their
craft has become. Vocals were recorded spontaneously in bedroom closets
and living rooms, which may explain the haunting urgency you hear
in Brandon's voice, especially on driving tracks like "Keep Your
Eyes Ahead." The band also took its time on the album. After
the bulk of official recording was completed, a listen through all
the demos and snippets on Brandon's hard drive convinced Benjamin
there were more gems in the rough (which is how both "Hallelujah"
and "Keep Your Eyes Ahead," as well as the mid-tempo "Back
to This" were rediscovered and retooled). Produced by the band,
Keep Your Eyes Ahead confirms in The Helio Sequence an energy and
a range that continues to defy narrow categorization. Unapologetic
pop and folk meld seamlessly to create songs that are bigger, more
epic and polished than anything they've ever done. Keep Your Eyes
Ahead is the sound of a band and a decade-old partnership that's been
invigorated. And that's exactly how the songs will make you feel:
invigorated.

Hello, Blue Roses
Portrait Is Finished And I Have Failed To Capture Your Beauty
PS, US Visual artist Sydney Vermont and her man DAN BEJAR (Destroyer,
Swan Lake, New Pornographers) formed Hello, Blue Roses in Vancouver
in 2005. Sydney writes the songs & Dan arranges them. Song ideas
were knocked back and forth over a period of 2 years. Last year Dan
& Sydney took time out of regular life to be together, write,
read and think about life differently; It was in the balmy climes
of their home away from home - Malaga, Spain - that the originals
that make up their debut album, The Portrait Is Finished And I Have
Failed to Capture Your Beauty... took real shape. In mid 2007, Hello,
Blue Roses committed these songs to tape with the help of friends
and family after their return to Vancouver at longtime fave spot JC/DC
studios. Roses cite 60s faves (Bridget St. John, Bill Fay, the group
sing of Trees Community), 80s AOR (Prefab Sprout & Kate Bush)
and the cheery mysticism of young Scotland ( Orange Juice & Felt)
as musical influences to their sparsely populated, timeless pop sound.

Simple Truths and Pleasures
PS, GERMANY This is the third solo release by Michael Holland, from
Carrboro, North Carolina. Michael was a founding member of Jennyanykind,
which released several critically-acclaimed albums on Elektra/Time
Warner, Yep Roc and other labels between 1992-2003. Burned out by
many tours through 48 states, label changes from minors to majors
and back and in a state of complete emptiness and sadness, he received
the Harry Smith Anthology as a gift and it completely changed his
view towards music. His new masterpiece, Simple Truths and Pleasures
is once again performed with members of the Big Fat Gap Bluegrass
Band from NC -- the vast majority of it recorded live in the studio.
More traditional than the previous record, the earthly songs reflect
influences by Earl Scruggs, Blind Boy Fuller, Mississippi John Hurt,
The Carter Family, Doc Watson and especially Hank Williams. The music
is a perfect and very melodic mixture of truly timeless Southern musical
forms: acoustic country, folk, bluegrass, honky tonk, old time string
band, blues and gospel, led by Michael Holland's warm and haunting
voice.

Instruments Of Science And Technology
Music From The Films Of R. Swift
PS, US For the critical listener, INSTRUMENTS OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY
sounds like Brian Eno and Wendy Carlos had a love child in the 70's
and subsequently marooned him/her/it on an Oort Cloud. If they had,
this might have been the recording their love child beamed back to
Earth. This largely instrumental electronic project may seem out of
character for RICHARD SWIFT, who has raised eyebrows and turned heads
over the past few years for his unmistakably beautiful singing voice,
melancholic lyrics and sophisticated songwriting. Taking into account
all three releases, it appears that Swift considers the last 80 years
of recorded music as his own personal spice rack of musical texture
from which to draw and concoct new musical recipes. With Instruments
of Science and Technology, Swift has resurrected the earliest forms
of electronic music, thrown in a few dashes of dub, hip-hop, kraut-rock,
and Motown-and created a new hybrid dish. So fire up the hooka coals,
turn on that full screen iTunes visualizer, and pump these jams as
loud as your speakers/neighbors will allow.

Japancakes
The Sleepy Strange
PS, US Reissue. MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! Building on the accessible
experimentation on If I Could See Dallas and the Down the Elements
EP, Japancakes' aptly named second album, The Sleepy Strange, is dreamy
and earthy, complex and immediate, and challenging and soothing. Though
their modus operandi -- repeating melodic phrases for hours at a time
to highlight the subtle shifts in tone and rhythm - - remains the
same, The Sleepy Strange is the band's most cohesive work to date;
yet it keeps all of the spontaneous beauty of their previous releases.
If anything, the slightly more focused sound highlights the band's
strong melodies and interplay, making it one of the warmest, most
inviting post-rock albums since Jim O'Rourke's Eureka, which also
featured a fair amount of Japancakes' secret weapon, the pedal steel
guitar. Whether it takes the lead, as on the opening waltz "The
Waiting," or adding to the weightless beauty of "Disconnect
the Cables"' avant soft rock, the group's masterful use of the
instrument gives the music a dreamy, strangely western-tinged timelessness.
The surprisingly propulsive "Soft N EZ" adds naive-sounding
analog synths to fiddles and pedal steel, highlighting the group's
highly inventive (and somewhat startling) mix of styles and sounds
within one track. This is also Japancakes' most varied album, both
musically and emotionally; "This Year's Beat" subtly shifts
from brooding to assuring, while the loopy, languid title track and
the dark string- and keyboard-driven finale, "Vinyl Fever,"
couldn't be farther apart in sound or mood. Hypnotically beautiful,
The Sleepy Strange is the best representation yet of Japancakes' exciting
repetitions, and one of 2001's best albums. --ALL MUSIC GUIDE.

Down The Elements
PS, US Reissue. MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! Eric Berg's heady instrumental
visions maintain something of an
unintentional defiance that suggests that the 21st century technology
is still a far-off proposition. By focusing on cello strains, droning
bass and guitar lines, and insistently groovy acoustic drum patterns,
it appears that he and his other Athens, GA, cohorts don't recognize
the cut-and-paste, sample-centric age that most rock is now generated
in. This EP, which is sandwiched between two larger efforts of equally
hypnotic textures, creates moods that are far more demanding of a
listener's attention than much of the ambient music produced by the
synthesists the world over. The wonderfully infectious riff that propels
"A.W. Sonic" somehow manages to sustain its drawing power
for the majority of the track's 11-minute lifespan. "Sputnik"
and the title track are the disc's straight-ahead electronic fare,
but they are so skillfully arranged it's as if they'd been secretly
peering in the Orb's laboratory for years. As a lower cost introduction
to what Berg has begun to achieve from an experimental rock concept
gone right (unlike most), Down the Elements is immensely satisfying.
-- ALL MUSIC GUIDE.
Originally released as an EP by Kindercore
in 2000, Down The Elements clocks in at 37:58 minutes, which makes
it a full length in the real world. These recordings were made at
the same time as those for If I Could See Dallas. Eclectic, mostly
upbeat, instrumental explorations like Trans Am meets Tangerine Dream
backed with beautiful blips and burbles sure to sooth.

Japancakes
If I Could See Dallas
PS, US Reissue. MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! Japancakes' improvisational
drone pop symphonies defy easy classification, stretching a single
chord to its breaking point and picking up the pieces to create dense
but inviting soundscapes which somehow find the common ground between
the soothing wash of ambient and the propulsive energy of rock. For
If I Could See Dallas, group ringleader Eric Berg and engineer Andy
Baker handcrafted the disc's 11 instrumentals from snatches of studio
performances, giving the songs a form and shape their live set no
doubt lacks, but the cumulative effect is no less hypnotic -- for
all of the record's cosmic glow, the recurring presence of steel guitar
keeps the music rooted in terra firma, a paradox which makes the music
that much more difficult to pinpoint in any single time or place.
The evolutionary process, which guides each song, is almost imperceptibly
subtle, their circular melodies shaded by analog synths and strings
that bubble in and out of the mix -- creating music that arrives without
traveling, Japancakes is that rare experiment as fascinating in practice
as it is in theory. --ALL MUSIC GUIDE

Jarvinen, Anna
Jag Fick Feeling
PS, SWEDEN This is the debut solo full-length release from Stockholm-based
Anna Järvinen, former member of Sweden's Granada from 1998-2004.
Granada released three albums and one EP on record labels such as
Universal, V2 and Look Left Recordings, and were produced by Björn
Olsson and Mattias Glavå, who also heavily contributed to this
record. Jag Fick Feeling was recorded in the Kungssten industry area
in Gothenburg during a rainy summer and cold winter with members of
Dungen and The Works, amongst many others. For this record, Järvinen
tried to make music she has always loved, with melodies that she grew
up hearing: "...the soundtrack to Brideshead Revisited, The Carpenters,
Elton John's darling '70s tunes, Vesa Matti Loiri's interpretations
of Eino Leino's poetry, Woody Allen movies, Pentti Saarikoski, nature
poetry, drug and alcohol abuse, nostalgia, the Finland of my dreams,
falling in love, sorrow, homesickness." As a result, Jag Fick
Feeling is full of longing, made with delicate orchestration, flute,
vibraphone, piano and autoharp. On top of it all, Anna Järvinen's
clear-as-a-bell voice rings with a tone not unlike The Sundays' Harriet
Wheeler. Each song is sung in Swedish, but the heart doesn't.

Kubin, Felix Und Das Mineral Orchester
Music for Theatre and Radio Play
PS, GERMANY We are extremely excited to announce the 1st collaboration
between the Dekorder label and our old friend, local conspirator and
private hair gardener Felix Kubin. Kubin has achieved worldwide reputation
by releasing post-dadaist, futuristic NDW-influenced Organ&Korg
smash hits on his own Gagarin label, on A-Musik, Ski-pp, Meeuw, Diskono
et al. He has collaborated with People Like Us, Coolhaven, Mark Boombastik,
Asmus Tietchens, ensemble Intégrales, David Fenech, Ergo Phizmiz,
Boris D. Hegenbart, Wojtek Kucharczyk and many others. His first recordings
date back to his teenage years in the early 1980's, followed by his
electroacoustic noise duo Klangkrieg and the pseudo-communist Liedertafel
Margot Honecker. Right from the start Felix Kubin has written and
recorded music for films (hence the title of his first album) by the
likes of Mariola Brillowska and Anke Feuchtenberger and continues
the German tradition of "Hörspiel" (radio play) with
works such as "Territerrortorium", "Nachtspeicher",
"Orpheus' Psykotron" and "Syndikat für Gegenlärm"
(with guest appearances by Matmos, DAT Politics and Wolfgang Müller
of Die Tödliche Doris). Some of Kubin's most gorgeous and adventurous
works are his contributions to "The Raft" (a radio play
by the mysterious Xentos Bentos of The Homosexuals, directed by Lukas
Simonis of Coolhaven, Trespassers W, Dull Schicksal) and his soundtracks
for theatre plays by Branko Simic ("Zufall", based on a
short story by Vladimir Nabokov) and the notorious Schorsch Kamerun.
The latter (known in Germany as a member of Goldene Zitronen) directed
"Hollywood Elegien" based on a song cycle by Bert Brecht
and Hanns Eisler. Now the best parts of these works are for the first
time available on LP and CD, simply (and aptly) titled "Music
for Theatre and Radio Play". While the musical spectrum on this
release covers a variety of styles and moods it's still almost immediately
recognizable as a typically Kubin-ist work featuring the main ingredients
his records and body-and-mind-boggling live shows are famous for.

Magnetic Fields, The
Distortion (ON SALE)
PS, US New album! STEREOGUM: "The Magnetic Fields can't be accused
of false advertising in titling studio album eight Distortion: Each
tune's wrapped in a fuzzy, clamoring shell, even when the feedbacking
acoustic piano and guitar hum's relegated to deep in the background.
Distortion's consistent textural palette's reminiscent of Holiday's
"Desert Island," but this is all about icy New York City,
or some other place where it snows. Besides distortion, the songs
are coated in the lonesome darkness of The Charm Of The Highway Strip.
Sigh. On the whole, it sports more sonic depth than 2004's sorta minor,
stringier i. Let's consider it a baker's dozen of sad-and-out-of-love
songs... Let's also consider it incredibly beautiful."

Soateramic Sounds of Magoo [expanded re-issue]
PS, SCOTLAND The original 1997 album and 6 bonus tracks. ALL MUSIC
GUIDE: "The brief tracks on Soateramic Sounds... are a giddy
cacophony of fuzzy pop gems. Magoo's songs are noisy, quirky, and
occasionally low-fi, but above all they're hooky, with sing-along
choruses and friendly melodies packed into every second. It's quite
a likeable approach -- some of the album's tracks are rockers, others
are mid-tempo pop songs, and still others, surprisingly enough, are
atmospheric and rather mellow. Each song casually dedicates itself
to churning out snappy, memorable structures. Between the band's charming
generosity with melody, their scattered and idiosyncratic approach
to instrumental presentation, and their inexhaustible supply of hooks,
Soateramic Sounds... proves to be an immensely satisfying listen."

Bedlam in Goliath
PS, US New album from modern prog princes! ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "On
their first three proper albums, Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez
played games of quiet-loud-quiet (or loud-quiet-loud), sneaking around
stealthily for minutes at a time before detonating another blast of
thrash-metal riffing and piercing screams. The Bedlam in Goliath is
simply loud-loud-loud, virtually every song played at maximum volume
and tempo. But, in fact, instead of being wearisome or exhausting,
it's an oddly refreshing album. The band gets closer to their roots
in thrash and funk-metal than ever before, avoids using electronics
except where they can make a big impact, and finally lets semi-permanent
guest John Frusciante occupy a readily discernible role."

returns accompanied by a band and a handful of sing-able choruses.
The lineup that accompanied him at Lollapalooza 2006 and throughout
the last two years is captured here on 9 songs of pop urgency. The
album was recorded in Chicago throughout 2007 and includes keyboard
and vocal contributions from Elanors' Noah Harris. The songs take
an anthemic, albeit dark, approach to 60s-influenced pop. A veteran
performer, originally from Champaign IL, Cameron McGill has spent
years delivering his dark, sophisticated pop songs, reflecting the
likes of Nick Cave and Warren Zevon. McGill has independently released
two albums, 2004's kitchen-sink-pop Stories of The Knife and The Back
and the sparse Nebraska-era Springsteen inspired Street Ballads &
Murderesques in 2006, both to critical acclaim. An upcoming tour in
March takes the band to the SXSW festival in Austin TX.

gong frequencies, from vibrations of the bodies of bass drums, and
the surprising sonorities that occur with the combination of these
elements. Now he applies these techniques to his latest solo effort,
to stunning effect: "Metals" is, as its name suggests, a
bold, all-percussion foray into heavy metal. No theatrical silliness
here; just sheer exhilaration; the fundamental power of loud, organized,
precise rhythms; ringing, heavy anti-melodies. It's this sound, in
the many forms it has taken over the years that continually inspires
new philosophies, drives independent thinking, and causes hundreds
of thousands of people to bang their heads. Jon Mueller takes it,

PS, US After being cherry picked to accompany the likes of Grizzly
Bear, Franz Ferdinand, and TV on the Radio on the recent DAVID SHRIGLEY
CD+book "Worried Noodles", MUNCH MUNCH return with a new
single this January 22nd on TOMLAB. The A side, 'Wedding' defines
Munch Munch's sound. With prominent synth similar to Of Montreal,
and the distinct vocals of Klaxons, this track is a piece of raucous
DIY charm. Complex drums and synth move in to a jingle pop ditty with
'Endolphins'. Like Architecture in Helsinki, Munch Munch are able
to blend funk elements into the proceedings, making this track easy
for every stripe of listener to enjoy. It is as hypnotic as Steve
Reich-esque patterns play counterpoint to old school Neptunes style
breakdowns. The end to this delectable slice of musical initiative
is 'Wet Nightmare' - the shortest track on the single, but by no means
the least noteworthy. Like a Christmas song on speed, it grabs your
attention and holds you tight, ending in a crescendo of frantic gusto.
Recording frantic pop explosions in their bedrooms, they mix abstract
lyrics, unpredictable structures, and ecstatic playfulness into a
unique sound that appears to be the start of a fruitful career.

roots, primal and persuasive, dropping hints like The Jesus &

60s rock-n-roll... A huge, happy rush, sung in Swedish!

Patchen, Kenneth/Lawrence Ferlinghetti
Rebel Poets Of America
PS, UK Two of the most brilliant poets of the beat generation, Kenneth
Patchen and Lawrence Ferlinghetti performing their compelling works
in a jazz context This edition captures the movement in poetry toward
all-inclusiveness, and a belief that the language and music of the
street had their own beauty, integrity and significance, rooted as
they were in the experience of ordinary people. Patchen is one the
most important american writers of the 20th century and Ferlinghetti
wrote 'Coney Island Of The Mind' which sold a million copies. In terms
of both attitude and style, Patchen and Ferlinghetti paved the way
for Bob Dylan, Jim Morrison and Captain Beefheart. Strong export potential
to America and to jazz culture specialists in Japan.

Pumuky
Los Exploradores Perdidos
PS, SPAIN BEST EP OF DECEMBER IN SPANISH MAGAZINE ROCKDELUX. Notice
to seafarers, as of today, we are making available the new recording
by Pumuky "Los exploradores perdidos" ("The lost explorers").
Amidst the fog, sounds rise and, like a veil, cover the ship piloted
by Canaries artist Jaír Ramírez. Having definitely lost
its island coastal navigation route, Pumuky uses old navigation charts,
as shown by the extraordinary packaging signed Burnao, in order to
give sense to its introspection. This is no Conrad-style metaphysical
journey though: it is about crossing a storm of eroticism without
going mad in the lulls of disappointment. There is much to be discovered
in this drifting disc, and seafarers with the necessary instinct to
compose a cocktail of horizons, such as David Cordero from Ursula,
Abraham Boba, or Pedro Cantudo from Jubilee y Limousine. All of them
are led by Pumuky, whose travels take shape in these 5 spectral songs
full of tenderness. The explorers seem lost, yes, but we are still
in good hands.

Sex Death Cassette
PS, US Inspired by influences as diverse as Guided By Voices, R Stevie
Moore, Fela Kuti, Lightning Bolt, Fushitsusha, Stevie Wonder, Paul

full of hope, determination and chaos. It'll leave you with sweat
dripping down your face onto your swelled lip; fresh, liquid salt,
the quintessential flavor of late night post-disco parties and booty
slinging good times. After dancing to this album, you're heavy with
it, like too much cough syrup on a stomach full of hi-quality sushi.
RAFTER executes the helter-skelter boogie-down production so gracefully
that it is no mystery why those in-the-know recruit him, including

Ramsey, Tyler
A Long Dream About Swimming Across the Sea
(ON SALE)
PS, US Debut album from the new guitarist for Band of Horses. Ramsey
is best known for his guitar work. Crafting delicate, finger-style
guitar picking reminiscent of John Fahey and Leo Kottke, but with
a sum effect that is all his own. Indie folk, Country Blues, Finger
style guitar - Ramsey is a composer of intricate, ethereal songs of
melancholy and rumination.
POPMATTERS REVIEW: "These days, Tyler Ramsey's probably best
known for playing guitar with Band of Horses, but he's also forging
a strong solo identity. A Long Dream finds the Asheville, NC musician
trafficking in gentle, largely acoustic arrangements that recall the
deft guitar playing of Leo Kottke or John Fahey."

to gritty bar rooms and fancy stages from Nashville to L.A. A key

here on the two-disc collection Best Tracks and Side Tracks 1979-2007.

Black Habit
PS, US First Nation has become Rings. Rings is the new First Nation.
This is their new record. It is called Black Habit. New York's First
Nation was Nina Mehta, Kate Rosko, and Melissa Livaudais. Melissa
left; Abby Portner (sister of Animal Collective's Dave Portner) joined.
The new trio decided to make a clean break and rename the band. Black
Habit delivers in a major way. Rings have clearly developed their
own style: a loose tribal pop sound that thrives on vocal harmonies
and pulsating drum rhythms. Black Habit's energy is full of beauty,
elegance and simplicity. The new name represents the group in many
ways: the group's circular compositions, the bonds between them, their
decision-making processes, and their feminine beliefs, interlocking,
connected, whole, and continuous.

S.T. Mikael
Mind of Fire
PS, SWEDEN After an 11 year silence, here's a new album by the mysterious
and legendary Swedish psychedelic ulti-instrumentalist, S.T. Mikael.
Mikael spearheaded the DIY psychedelic rock/folk movement of the late
1980s/mid-'90s... Now that he's finally back, here's a chance at last
for the world to join his psychedelic world again. The music, stretching
out in many different directions, has been done freely and spontaneously
in an extremely relaxed and happy environment. He also joins forces
with Dungen's Reine Fiske and Fredrik Björling, whose musical
expertise now also grace the grooves. These otherworldly acid tripper
recordings now exist in the real world and S.T. Mikael proves, once
again, to be a gifted songwriter and an unconventional performer with
a very personal ear for acoustics and an emotional honesty seldom
seen these days. Melodic folk-rock elements flow with waves of heavy
fuzz-phase leads; weird, detached, haunted vocals echo over the band
and the whole thing seems to teeter on the brink of psychedelic oblivion.
This is not psychedelic revival, but the psychedelic NOW. His soaring
vocals, surreal lyrics, fragile, folky melodies, heavy fuzz riffs,
mind-bending soul funk and penchant for the spiritual and mystical
make this a fascinating voyage that is so mind-twisting, soul-swirling,
upper psychedelic that your third eye takes you on a joyride through
an altered state! This album makes your brain start thinking in those
pebble-splash-pond-mind circular expanding waveforms that reveal the
password to tomorrow. The CD also contains 9 previously-unreleased
vintage recordings and unique spoken introductions by Mikael. Limited
edition of 2,000 copies only.

Sambassadeur
Migration
PS, SWEDEN Migration is a sparkling pop album, where breezy vocals
meet deceptively sunny arrangements that perfectly wrap up the most
heartfelt melodies. Biography: Sambassadeur debuted on Labrador in
winter 2005 with the release of the "Between the Lines"-EP.
The EP was followed by their self-titled debut album later that year.
The songs were all recorded at home which gave the production a primitive
quality that labeled them by some as being a lo-fi-twee act. This
was never the bands intention. If the cliché is that songs
are like children, then Sambassadeur saw no purpose in stagnating
in front of their home-computer while watching their kids being taken
custody by those who didn't have the ability to, indeed, read between
the lines and see through the understated surface of the songs. This
called for some change. The EP "Coastal Affairs", released
in may 2006, marked the start of a development towards a more luxurious
setting. Without loosing their enigmatic qualities, songs like "Kate"
and "Marie" introduced a breeze of new confidence. The Sambassadeurs
saw the opportunity to take things to even greater heights and returned
to the scene in late august 2007 with "Subtle Changes".

Samurai
S-T
PS, UK Classic Progressive rock album - Now 24-bit remastered from
the original master tapes. New essay & interview with Dave Lawson.
"Samurai" is truly a lost classic of the Progressive era.
Released on the short lived Greenwich Gramophone label in 1972, the
album was influenced by the experiments of groups such as KING CRIMSON,
GENTLE GIANT et al, but was more than a mere clone of these bands.
Evolving from the equally excellent band WEB (whose album "I
Spider" is a classic of the genre), the musicianship on the album
was excellent and Keyboard player DAVE LAWSON's compositions were
groundbreaking and memorable. Sadly the group disbanded shortly after
the release of the record resulting in limited sales. However, the
influence of the album was not lost as both DAVE LAWSON and TONY REEVES
soon joined DAVE GREENSLADE to form the group GREENSLADE, effectively
taking up the musical mantle laid down by SAMURAI. This Esoteric reissue
features a booklet with previously unseen photographs and an interview
with DAVE LAWSON.

Scary Mansion
Every Joke Is Half the Truth
PS, US Massachusetts-bred Leah Hayes attended art school in New York
before moving to France where she played In a band called Satan's
Fingers, collaborating with David Ivar from underground pop legends
Herman Dune. Growing up playing piano and guitar, Hayes also took
up the thunderstick, an Appalachian instrument similar in Tone to
the banjo. Her collection of ballpoint pen notebook illustrations
"Holy Molly" was published by pantographic in 2004 and her
freelance illustration work has appeared in the New York Times, Punk
Planet, and Mcsweeney's. Shortly after starting the band Scary Mansion
with Ben Shapiro (the Fugue) on drums and Bradley Banks on Bass, Hayes
set about recording the tracks that make up "Every Joke Is Half
The Truth". Hayes worked with producer Kyle Fischer (Rainer Maria)
over an extended six-month period. With the sound of the thunderstick,
the resulting tracks alternate between sparse intimate tones and near
claustrophobic layers of feedback, all with an attention to the needs
of the songs. Hayes' lyrical approach mines themes of alienation and
romantic snafus, embodied in characters litigious, predatory, and
straw-filled. "Every Joke Is Half The Truth" is Scary Mansion's
debut album. Hayes has a Graphic novel due out on fantagraphics February
2008 called "Funeral of the Heart".

Scientists, The
Swampland: Birth Of The Scientists
PS, UK Formed in Perth, Australia, but later to relocate to Melbourne
and then London, Kim Salmon's Scientists played a brand of minimalist
punked-up swamp blues that saw them become legends on at least three
continents. Just about everyone loves the Scientist, from Sonic Youth
and Mudhoney (both of whom have asked the band to play with them)
to Sub Pop to Henry Rollins - in fact, the entire US alt-rock hierarchy.
And what's not to like - this new compilation for the UK features
the strongest tracks from the band's legendary Blood Red River recordings,
notably 'Swampland', one of the most evocative and best loved Australian
songs of all time. But that's not all: as well as the studio recordings,
with Kim's permission we've unearthed some dynamite live recordings
from 1982 that have never been released anywhere before. The packaging
includes a mammoth essay on the band's history written by Alex Ogg,
with full co-operation and humorous asides from Kim, plus photos and
memorabilia. A handy starting point for those new to the band, featuring
as it does the cream of the Scientists' work from their acclaimed
early Melbourne period, but spiced up with some amazing live tracks
for the established fan.

Planeando En Tu Azotea
PS, SPAIN The new album of the Valencian group, SERPENTINA, is made
up of two siblings, Paco and María Tamarit, with the title
"Planeando en tu Azotea" Both of them are members of the
conservatory and Paco, who is in charge of composing and creating
the beautiful arrangements of the songs, has collaborated in the past
few years with numerous bands from this region and he also produced
the debut album of CORAZÓN. In this album, we find 12 new hits
of luminous and charming pop, with the advance of the video of "Querido
Miedo", which is notably the return of the band after a magnificent
debut album "Blancamañana" (2004) released on the
small independent label from Barcelona, Annika Records In brief, "Planeando
en tu Azotea" is a summer breeze of pop songs for short and elegant,
while distinguished, melody lovers, packed with dreamy voices and
crystal clear instrumentation. A few drops of bitter liquor which
help to mitigate the placid sweetness are suggested while listening
to this gem.

Set In Sand
Nothing Against The Ocean
PS, JAPAN "Nothing Against The Ocean" is the debut CD of
Set In Sand, licensed by Hue (JAPAN) from Abandon Building Records
(US). Set in Sand (one of the many aliases of producer Lendin Hopes)
was brought into this world around 2000, originally designed as a
purely electronic and instrumental project working within the nether-regions
of IDM. Early Set in Sand creations followed the blueprint for experimental
electronic song crafts, disjointed percussion and glitchy filtered
melodies with subtle instrumentation and vocal samples offering a
hint of things to come. Two net releases came out in this vein, the
self released "Are You Listening EP" and the full length
"You Say You Can't Sleep Alone" by German label Subsource.
Around 2004 Lendin reconnected with his singer-songwriter roots, adding
acoustic guitar and vocals to a large portion of his compositions.
Examples of this style can be found on the net release "Mini
Splintered Things" hosted by the good folks at Drift Records.
In addition to these three net releases Set in Sand has contributed
songs to a number of compilations including "Assemblage Sessions
1 and 2 CD's" (Abandon Building), "Subvaritrax" (Subvariant),
"Ctrl-Space" (Modsquare), "The Karaoke Hymnal"
(Peppermill Records) and "Calderas of the Mind" and "Heart
on the Right Spot" ( Project Mooncircle/ Botanica Del Jibaro).
Set in Sand is also the producer for the whacky Hip Hop duo Flowtation
Addvice (who's debut "Terrain Clouds" is due out on Abandon
Building in early 08.) With "NATO" Lendin has synthesized
all the elements of his early work into a weird piece of sonic experimentation
masquerading as a sort of Pop album. Half of the albums 8 songs feature
vocals, a surreal blend of androgynous singing and hyperactive MC
work. The music is based around skeletons of guitar and programmed
beats with multiple layers of digital nonsense wrapped around them.
A most distinct touch is Lendin's use of live drums in complimentary
patterns over the grounding electronic percussion. It results in a
blurring mesh of chaotic calm, establishing a kind of fresh voice
in the world of beatmaking. In other words it's pretty decent stuff.

Sneaky Pete Kleinow
Anthology
PS, US Sneaky Pete Kleinow was best known as a mind-altering pedal
steel guitarist, and an integral part of the sound of Gram Parsons'
original Flying Burrito Bros. Every rock fan worth his salt knows
Sneaky as the brilliant steel player zigzagging his way across The
Gilded Palace of Sin, the Burritos' stunning 1969 debut, and as the

to no less than the Rolling Stones, Booker T. & the MG's, Joni

Stone Breath
A Silver Thread To Weave The Seasons (EXPANDED)
PS, US Originally released in 1998, now expanded to two CDs with essential
bonus material. The first disc presents the original album, long out
of print, in all its acid-forest-drone-mantra-folk glory. These songs
are of earth & spirit love, sunlight splitting open threatening
clouds, trees & birds that talk, the smell of wet earth &
the sting of rain on an upturned face, firebrands scattering columns
of sparks into the red twilight. The second disc returns some lost
songs to Stone Breath, adds some rare songs from compilation appearances
& presents a previously unreleased track featuring Fit & Limo.

Suckle
Against Nurture
PS, SCOTLAND ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "here are a few reasons why you
should care about Suckle: they are a band founded by ex-Vaselines
Frances McKee, they are on the antiestablishment, flag-waving Chemikal
Underground label, and they sound like a female-fronted Tindersticks
fighting the urge to vomit up an overdose of Prozac. Partly, this
is a consequence of McKee's sinister monotones guiding along melodies
that just barely scrape the sky of what a struggling listener could
call optimism. "So Happy Before" -- with touching echoes,
minimalist piano, and slide guitar -- stretches the very definition
of its title, while "Honey Suicide" builds up a subtle premise
of angular basslines and soaring, sun-streaked choruses that will
have you feeling elated and depressed at the exact same time. Suckle's
brand of enchanted unhappiness should not be undervalued: The simple
folk-pop of the past may be just a shadow, but this is the sound of
a confused personality just aching to be discovered."

PS, FRANCE More than anything else, "Leave" tells us Philipp
Bückle's story. His beginnings at Morr Music's, his love of folk
music (Alasdair Roberts, Empress...) This debut album is (charming)
like his author: a dream coming true through the trembling voice of
an open-handed man; a little more than a half hour for ten songs filled
with humanity. Like all great departures, it contains its fair share
of loss and expectation: here and there, touching musical memories
(Hood, Crabstick, and Famous Boyfriend) and funny stories, redesigned
with the help of a laptop, an acoustic guitar or a melodica. Generous
and inspired, this record will definitely Leave its trace in the hearts

Thuja
S-T
PS, US This is a limited edition of 500 copies on LP. The first 100
copies are on color vinyl. Improvisational Bay Area quartet Thuja
create aural landscapes that capture the reverberations of wood and
wire, the sounds of breaking sticks and scraping stones, and the ambience
of their surroundings into a shifting, dynamic musical framework.
The members of Thuja play off each other and the space they inhabit
with a natural instinct, succeeding in conjuring spectral compositions,
which are at once, abstract yet inviting. For this self-titled release,
their sixth full-length and first for Important Records, Thuja has
assembled recordings from various live performance spaces (the Hemlock,
the Oaklandish Gallery, Pehr Space, Kains Greenhouse) and have welcomed
a variety of guests into the fold to help assist and expand their
microscopic psychedelia toward a new plateau. After eight years, the
semiannual gathering of the members of Thuja is almost traditional,
but new clearings are still to be discovered in its thickets of sound.
This self-titled release is yet another essential artifact from Thuja's
ongoing explorations.

Van Zandt, Townes
Rear View Mirror
PS, US Originally released in 1993, this has, until now, been out
of print & in high demand. Remastered w/ new artwork it is a great
look into Townesi 'ntimate live performances at the peak of his career.
Accompanied by acoustic guitar, bass & fiddle on most tracks.
ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "In 1990, Townes Van Zandt was working on a
three-CD retrospective for which he was re-recording much of his repertoire.
That album never appeared, but in 1993, the tiny Austin-based Sundown
label released Rear View Mirror, a 17-track album running nearly 58
minutes and containing newly recorded versions of Van Zandt songs
dating back to 1968. Though a cover note claims "unique instrumentation,"
that seems to consist of only of an occasional second guitar and a
fiddle. (Sparse applause indicates the recording had been made in
a club.) Many of Van Zandt's best-known songs are included -- "Pancho
& Lefty," "If I Needed You," "To Live Is to
Fly," "Tecumseh Valley," and others -- and while this
is not the best set of recordings of those songs, the tendency of
Van Zandt's albums to go out of print might mean this is the only
one you would find in your nearest record bin, in which case the album
is highly recommended."

as a singular & particularly unique musical statement. A compilation
of experimental music for solo stringed instruments, with little to
no overdubs. "Despite the variation in instrumentation, not to
mention the differences in nationality & backgrounds of the performers
themselves, it is also interesting to note certain similarities to
be found between the five tracks contained on this compilation. Sometimes
it can be heard melodically; sometimes within the movement, space

emotional resonance that defies analysis & can rarely be articulated

Weisman, Kurt
Spiritual Sci-Fi
PS, US While Spiritual Sci-Fi is a result of work that Kurt Weisman
has been undertaking for the last 10 years it's certainly also worth
noting that he's a multi-instrumentalist in the acclaimed folk outfit
Feathers as well as a member of J Mascis' Witch. Kurt's stunning musicality
and absolute compositional prowess makes this an extremely compelling
and wonderfully musical experimental pop-folk recording. Kurt Weisman
is a New England composer in his late 20s around whom all the wheels
of life seem distinctly sped up (he's known for his extreme falsetto
as well as pitching up his voice beyond Beatle and into cartoon).
Hair is cut into strange shapes and then suddenly shorn, moustaches
appear and disappear with alarming frequency, cyber punk outfits melt
into freak folk into noise into French bohemian complete with beret
(red wine hippydancing at uptight in-store free jazz shows). The songs
already sound like they're floating above something else when you
hear them with just voice and 12-string. These are not regular songs
with weird production. The alternative to the expectation refers to
the expectation. He seems to know every tricky thing that's ever happened
in pop music and how to take it further but then takes that further
by giving verse 2 all these ear-stretching variations on verse 1.
There's a lot of weird meter stuff, little skips and jumps or little
things that get stretched that seem inspired by his own computer micro-editing
techniques.

a.P.A.t.T.
Black and White Mass (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 5TH)
PS, UK Exploring similar landscapes to Frank Zappa - minus the virtuoso
elements - Liverpool-based a.P.A.t.T. are a bewildering and completely
original two to seven piece band, utilising all available genres to
create a daft and beautiful music. 'Black and White Mass' sets a new
standard in home entertainment, featuring some of a.P.A.t.T.'s most
accessible compositions to date, whilst still retaining an element
of surprise. Some bands are just damned impossible to classify: a.P.A.t.T.
are a (usually) 6 peice amalgamation of all that has come before &
all that will slowly catch up in the end. Beyond genre defying: every
instrument and style you can think of, mashed up together in jawdropping
live performances. The experimental and chaotic beeps, buzzes and
blips of a.P.A.t.T., (described on the BBC Merseyside website as sounding
like Frank Zappa having a fist fight with Mighty Mouse) have steadily
built up a growing army of admirers. They were featured on the promotional
video for Liverpool's Capital of Culture bid, and have recently staged
a multi-media installation called 'Quartet', featuring four films
projected whilst the band performed inside. As if this wasn't enough,
they even found time to compose the incidental music for the BBC Radio
Merseyside alternative music show, PMS. a.P.A.t.T. officially began
with the completion of a C90 cassette tape in 1998. It was decided
from the offset that the way the music was formed on this tape (disjointed,
non-specific, omni-style) was to influence the revolving multi-instrumentalist
approach, and dictate the 'anti-hierarchical' line-up of the act.
It was not until 2002 and the introduction of digital recording techniques
that a.P.A.t.T. were to make an 'official' release. Following several
lineup changes, software changes, hardware changes, various support
slots and a Dutch tour, a.P.A.t.T. teamed up with London label, Lowsley
Sounds, to release their first full album, (L.P.) in 2004. Although
hopes were high for this release and it sold well, a.P.A.t.T. were
never satisfied with the final outcome, wanting to push things further
musically. 2006 saw more line up changes and the continuation of the
recordings for that "perfect album". Which brings us to
"Black and White Mass". "a.P.A.t.T. are a motherfucking
experience. Probably the only UK band i can think of to come up with
their vision of the dark, vicious and fuck me, rather scary vision
of the ACID PUNK dropped onto us from the visions of Gibby from the

PS, US Debut album by a four piece, from Santa Cruz, CA, whose joyous
folk pop has been compared to Sufjan Stevens, The Decemberists and
Beirut. A bedroom band put together by 22-year-old Dylan McKeever,
Antarctica Takes It! recorded the songs on "The Penguin League"
straight onto a friend's laptop, using the computer's internal microphone.
No problem if you're a straightforward rock'n'roll band, but Dylan's
songs boasted an array of accordions, glockenspiels, cellos, ukuleles,
trumpets, harmonicas and pianos. The result should have been extremely
lo-fi - and in places it is (you can actually hear the instruments
battling for airspace at some points). But, overall, thanks to Dylan's
patience and prodigious talent, "The Penguin League" conjures
a tiny orchestra out of thin air. From the opening "I'm No Lover",
which sees mariachi horns collide with a rattling folk melody, to
the magical "Flightless Birds", which transports "Pet
Sounds" to the Antarctic wastes, this is a record that sounds
like it's anywhere but a suburban bedroom on the American West Coast.
In fact, lyrically and spiritually, Antarctica Takes It! reside, as
their names suggests, slightly further south. The album's highlight,
"Antarctica", sees the band knee deep in a polar expedition,
while the photos for the cover and CD booklet were provided by Dr
Samuel Silverstein, who headed the 1967 American Antarctic Mountaineering
Expedition. Dr Silverstein also writes about his photos in the booklet,
which makes this the first album to be released with sleeve notes
by an Antarctic explorer. Press/Radio: Reviews in Uncut, NME, The
Guardian, Plan B, Pitchfork, PopMatters, with more TBC.

PS, US One of the latest "true queer art punks" to emerge
from the cracked pavement of southern suburban sprawl, this is the
solo moniker of DEERHUNTER frontman/provocateur BRADFORD COX. This
is, essentially, a bedroom album, a collage, mixing the garage rock
& ambient electronic influences previously explored w/ Deerhunter
in a new context, w/ newly explored recording techniques, mainly laptop-based,
learned w/ guidance from kranky artist Nudge's Brian Foote. The result
is 14 Songs of melancholy & mania.

Epilogue in Waves (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 26TH)
PS, US '"Epilogue in Waves" is the third album from n5MD
main-man Mike Cadoo's ever evolving Bitcrush moniker. The album is
the soundtrack to a story which begins with a sense of hope, but whose
undercurrents pull you to the end you feared. Epilogue in Waves marks
the end of Cadoo's "wading in the ocean" thematic metaphor
for lost time that constituted the backbone of his previous album,
"In Distance." As his self-described "rock record,"
the album eschews some of Cadoo's previous electronic methodologies
for a more stripped-down songwriting style which utilizes only guitars,
basses and drums. This experiment in the basics has led to a sonically
rich release that still contains those warm musical crevices to find
solace in. Epilogue in Waves will please fans of previous works by
Bitcrush as well as neophytes to Cadoo's brand of emotional and sometimes
epic songwriting.

Bubblegum Lemonade
Ten Years Younger (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 5TH)
PS, US Magnificent debut release from a 60's influenced indie-pop
affair from Glasgow, Scotland. Bubblegum Lemonade is principally a
man called Laz, a 12-string Rickenbacker enthusiast with more than
a few Velvet Underground, Byrds, Jesus and Mary Chain, and Razorcuts
records in his collection. Title track 'Ten Years Younger' updates
the Mary Chain's take on The Velvets with nice bursts of electronica
and beautiful female backing vocals courtesy of Sandra from fellow
Glaswegians Strawberry Whiplash. 'The Tomorrow People' is a wonderful
60's-drenched jangle pop gem that should please even the most ardent
Byrds or Razorcuts fan, while 'Unsafe at Any Speed' is Ralph Nader
meets the Mary Chain with liberal dollops of reverb and distortion.
Finally, 'That Thing You Do!' is a glorious cover of the title song
from the mid-90's hit movie of the same name. Written by Adam Schlesinger
(Ivy, Fountains of Wayne), the song was originally credited to the
fictitious band The Wonders and needed to be roughed up a bit as it
is here. With insanely catchy songs, masterful 12-string guitars,
shimmering pop melodies, and the feedback drenched sounds of the Mary
Chain, Bubblegum Lemonade is an extraordinary addition to the Matinée
roster proving that old school indie will never go out of style. Limited
to 1000 copies in custom minijacket sleeve.

Down To The Wire (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 12TH)
PS, US Luis Garban of Venezuela has released heaps of records these
past couple years for labels such as Ad Noiseam, Peace-off, Intellectual
Violence, Mirex, Cock Rock Disco & Wrong Music, but for Terminal
Dusk he reveals his passion for dubstep. 'Down To The Wire' contains
high energy levels, sick low bass and brilliantly selected reggae
samples. This album is executed perfectly and includes remixes from
two fellow dubstep heads: Atki2 & Starkey. Side A kicks off with
'Maybe Next Time' dropping the warbly and brutal bass and some hot
B-boy samples. Give in to the head nod effect. Next up is 'Keep On
Truckin' with a wall of low end synth leads & Bollywood style
atmospheres. Rounding off the A side is 'Knock Yuh Out' and it's a
badman, turning up the energy. Flip for the B side and 'Everything
Is A New Surprise' kicks in with an ultra disgusting bassline &
pitched up bongos, massive! Next are the remixes, Starkey starts it
off with his remix of 'Knock Yuh Out' which takes the original to
another level, slows it down a bit, and offers some proper dubstep
swagger. Atki2 finishes the record with his rendition of 'Keep On
Truckin', bringing the Bristol styles, a classic remix.

abstract ambient soundscapes were greeted by short piano pieces from
the talented musician Elisa Marzorati. A delicate and minimal contemporary

DeVotchKa
Mad and Faithful Telling (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MARCH 18TH)
PS, US The times have finally caught up with acclaimed Denver quartet
DeVotchKa. Not long ago when the band unloaded their instruments -
a violin, a tuba and an accordion, among others - into a rock club,
they were told they must be in the wrong place. They created music
that was Grammy nominated (DeVotchKa created the soundtrack for the
indie smash Oscar winning film Little Miss Sunshine) without the benefit
of a huge promotion team or runaway budget, instead relying only on
their own efforts by self-releasing their records. And they crafted
gems of songs by mixing a beautiful blend of Eastern European bohemia,
American prairie rock and distinctive indie and called it pop, rather
than world, music. Now, the band is au courant, poised to shine on
with their Anti- Records debut A Mad and Faithful Telling. From the
cinematic richness of "Transliterator" to the modern pop
experiment of "The Clockwise Witness," to the soaring and
wrenching "Undone," DeVotchKa have produced a career-defining
record and the world is listening. THE ONION: "DeVotchkA gets
pegged with all kinds of farfetched descriptions - but despite all
their trappings, which include admittedly exotic elements, Nick Urata
and company concoct impeccable pop songs, the kind that fuse memory
and memorability with swaying darkness and glittering soul."

Dominique A
Sur Nos Forces Motrices (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 12TH)
PS, SPAIN Four concerts were recorded and trawled through to pick
out the best of the best: those moments when the group played perfectly,
captivated by and focused on the music; when it played at its best
without sacrificing the level of energy that simply makes a concert;
when they struck that perfect balance between the brutal, wild side,
when the group really puts its foot down, and the subtlety of, at
times sophisticated, arrangements, accompanied by brass and keyboards.
Yes, but is it a "greatest hit" or not? Let's say it sounds
like one massively, but Dominique clearly isn't making it a question
of principle. For Dominique, a live version must enhance or surpass
the original version. In that respect, we can be reassured. Dominique
and his group have come up with a bunch of new ideas. Meaning that
this album sweeps through the guy's entire career. No album is forgotten
- some songs even sprout new limbs, like L'Amour, squarely presented
as an overture. The pillars of his work are all here. Le courage des
oiseaux, so often reinvented, has been turned here into rock-funk;
La mémoire neuve, Pour la peau, Antonia are al included. The
nostalgic side of Dominique A, which he could hardly convey through
silence, comes out in Tout sera comme avant and Music hall. Less well
known, Le commerce de l'eau and the very rare Empty white blues captivate.
Lastly, as a bonus free gift, two unpublished titles have been concocted:
Revoir les choses and the highly literary and deeply moving Marina.
So there you have it, a new disc from Dominique A boasting no fewer
than fifteen titles. A fully rounded disc that should appeal beyond
his audience of fans, so much does he go beyond the famous distinction
of new "chanson française" to serve up a platter
of songs that are simply superb, with singing that is at times soothing
and absorbing, rustled up by a top-flight quartet of musicians. It's
the precise moment and the ideal way to discover or rediscover the
artist that is Dominique A.

Tomavistas: (Selected Rarities 2002-2007) (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY
26TH)
PS, US Daniel Romero is a multi-faceted musician based in Asturias,
north of Spain. In a very short time he has molded a very personal
discourse based on constructing low-budget electronic pop with lo-fi,
toy instruments, combined with stunning homemade visuals. "Tomavistas"
is something like an old video camera - literally taking in and recording
the landscapes of contemplative, visual sound. It is a collection
of Daniel Romero's rarities and personal favorites recorded as dot
tape dot, spanning the years 2002 - 2007. "Tomavistas" is
born of love of the domestic flavor of the "underground"
and the pleasure derived spending time making music for this scene.
Considering the difficulty for listeners to find these tracks, it
became time to compile them along with other, little known pieces
and clears out space for a new personal stockpile to be built. These
12 tracks are taken from limited edition compilations, vinyl only
releases and "unofficial" albums, from labels in France,
Germany, Spain, Japan, Mexico, UK and Canada. This collection is intended

PS, US Re-issue of Mercury Rev side-project's 1995 debut. ALL MUSIC
GUIDE: "The brain-searing Paralyzed Mind of the Archangel Void
is a trip into the furthest reaches of sound, a complete immersion
into space noise and melodic chaos. Comprised of a single, 42-minute
live performance piece, the Harmony Rockets' guise allows Mercury
Rev the opportunity to push their music to its breaking point; instead
of the ear-splitting avant freak-out one might have expected, however,
the disc seems to exist in slow motion, characterized by ominous waves
of sound. Guitars drone, trumpets throb, and Jonathan Donahue's vocals
float in and out of the mix like random messages intercepted from
another galaxy; the cumulative effect is an amazing distortion of
the time-space continuum, a shape-shifting aural world almost alien
in its dementia."

Hitchcock, Robin
Shadow Cat (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 12TH)
PS, UK Robyn Hitchcock has taken time out from working with The Venus
3 (which features various members of REM) and John Paul Jones (who
has been busy with his former band Led Zeppelin lately...) to compile
an exclusive album, Shadow Cat, for London's premier oddball label
Sartorial Records. This collection of previously unreleased material
from the Hitchcock vaults dates from 1993-99, providing the missing
link between The Egyptians on A&M and the Warner Bros years. Shadow
Cat itself features Moris Tepper, mainstay of Captain Beefheart's
Magic Band, on lead acoustic guitar, and all tracks are Hitchcock
originals, but for the Hendrix cover "The Wind Cries Mary"
(on which Sartorial boss Terry Edwards plays Hammond organ). Aside
from Edwards making a further appearance on "Never Have To See
You Again", Robyn performs all instruments & vocals. From
the concise opening cut, For Debbie Reynolds, to the concluding title
track, the quality of the songwriting & performance shines through
- "out-take" albums are all too often cobbled together from
unreleased (unrealizable!) material. Not so here. These 14 tracks
were whittled down from around 30 contenders, carefully edited &
remastered to create a cohesive album - even to the point of sequencing
the songs as two sides, despite it not being manufactured on vinyl.
Essential for those who have followed Robyn from his early days in
The Soft Boys (with Kimberley Rew, Morris Windsor and Andy Metcalfe)
to his work with film director Jonathan Demme and beyond, this release
also serves as a fine introduction to the work of one of Englands
most treasured songwriters. Enjoy! Track listing SIDE 1: 1 For Debbie
Reynolds, 2 Never Have To See You Again, 3 Love Affair, 4 The Wind
Cries Mary, 5 High On Yourself, 6 Because You're Over, 7 The Cat Walks
Her Kind Of Line. SIDE 2: 8 Statue With A Walkman, 9 The Green Boy,

The 1991 live footage from Japan runs for more than an hour, and features
Antena favorites such as Antena, Be-Pop and Eclat de Nuit, on which
Isabelle is backed by a crack jazz band including Fritz Sundermann

Camino Del Sol in 1982, the band left Crepuscule for major label releases
on Island and Mercury. Going solo, Isabelle Antena returned to Crepuscule

Judys, The
Land Of Plenty [re-issue] (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 5TH)
PS, US First ever official release for The Judys last album, recorded
but never released! In 1990, The Judy's set out to record a new album
with a new Judy's sound. Featuring the lineup that had been established
over a number of years the band, including Barbara Donaho (keyboards/guitars),
Lee Malone (bass), and Darwin Keys (drums), set out to explore new
horizons musically and thematically. Land of Plenty injected multi-layered
keyboards and guitars, stacked vocals, a gospel choir, and even a
bit of banjo into the band's palatte and sought to realize Bean's
vision of a new Americana musical landscape. Broad in its scope and
daring in its expansion of the band's definition of itself, Land of
Plenty was shelved when the group disbanded before the CD's release.
While a handful of copies have been given out, this is first time
this long sought-after project has been available to the general public.

Washarama [re-issue] (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 5TH)
PS, US The original 'Washarama' album finally re-issued on CD for
the first time! With six bonus tracks from "The Wonderful World
of Applainces" EP. The Judy's first full-length and most popular
recording, Washarama was a watershed event in the Texas new wave scene
and solidified the band's status as the state's most original and
daring musical provocateurs. The album perfectly captures the band's
quirky sensibility and their signature minimalist sound. The twelve-song,
35-minute album includes some of The Judy's most popular songs including
"Her Wave", "Man on a Window Ledge", and the legendary
"Guyana Punch". This was the first time that the band had
spent an extensive (for them) amount of time on a recording project
including a total remix of the album after its initial completion.
The album was officially released in 1981 at a record release party
at Houston's Agora Ballroom and literally became a top seller overnight.
Sales were later bolstered by Wasted Talent securing distribution
from a major regional distributor. Despite it's age, Washarama still
holds its own as the classic Texas new wave album.

Moo [re-issue] (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 5TH)
PS, US The original 'Moo' album finally re-issued on CD for the first
time! CD sports seven bonus tracks, mainman David Bean's "Modomusic"
EP. Released almost four years to the day after Washarama and following
an eighteen month hiatus, The Judy's Moo album has a slightly more
progressive sound: richer production values, fuller arrangements and
thicker harmonies. As the band returned to the stage in 1985, this
was the album that showed the band's maturity and development as songwriters
and musicians. The twelve songs on Moo, laced with solid-state irony,
well-placed cynicism and standard issue Judys' wit, show the band
at the peak of their creativity and acted as a springboard for their
live extravaganzas. The album was released with The Moo Tour - a month
of live performances across the state which included giant cereal
boxes, moving conveyer belts of milk cartons, and a dancing cow while
the band donned milkman uniforms. Critically acclaimed and fan-revered,
The Moo Album continues to be a milestone in Texas pop music.

Klein, Alan
Well At Least It's British (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 5th)
PS, UK 60's Brit Pop with an influence on 90's Brit Pop. Includes
rare Joe Meek produced tracks. All first time on CD, and first ever
reissue. After writing the soundtrack to the quintessential pre- Beatles
English pop movie What A Crazy World Alan Klein scored a deal with
Decca to write and perform his view of English society at the time.
His style of delivery was very distinctive, not unlike contemporary
Anthony Newley, and writing like Lionel Bart. Alan was managed by
Ken Pitt who also had another client called David Jones, soon to be
David Bowie. That the early style of Bowie's delivery is also akin
to Kleins must surely be more than coincidence. In the mid 90's Damon
Albarn was asked about his influences and said about this LP "
...it was instrumental in me making Modern Life Is Rubbish, and changing
and getting an idea of my own self.... I can't believe that David
Bowie didn't know him inside out, and the same with Ray Davies. My
favourite track goes ' he's a twentieth-century Englishman ' (see
Blur's For Tomorrow). It's a fantastic record." Klein went on
to tour the world as vocalist in the New Vaudeville Band. For bonus
tracks we include the two singles he wrote and recorded in 1962, both
produced by Joe Meek, and the 1965 singles including the withdrawn
Age Of Corruption.

Falling Off The Lavender Bridge (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 5TH)
PS, US Lightspeed Champion is the alter ego of Dev Hynes, musical
polymath and former member of cult noise pop band Test Icicles. After
their demise in 2006, Hynes began to focus on the more melodic fare
that's closer to his heart. On this record, he worked with Mike Mogis
(resident producer for Saddle Creek Records) and was backed by an
informal band including multi-instrumentalists Mogis and Nate Walcott,
The Faint's drummer Clark Baechle, and guest vocalist Emmy The Great,
along with moonlighting members of Cursive and Tilly And The Wall.
Here, Hynes reveals much about himself; the album being packed with
tragic-comic autobiographical numbers.

Mangion, Suzy
The Other Side of the Mountain (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 5TH)
PS, UK Starting from a cupboard with a piano & a drum kit in it,
Durham City, England, Suzy Mangion began her public music making as
one half of school boy/girl band George, in 1994. George released
a number of acclaimed secret pop records on vinyl collector labels
Earworm & Bad Jazz in the late 90s, and eventually released their
debut album 'The Magic Lantern' on Pickled Egg Records in 2003. An
EP, 'All Good Things', was released in Spain on Lejos Discos, and
the 2005 George album, 'A Week of Kindness', was jointly released
on both labels. Suzy also appeared on the Piano Magic album 'Writers
Without Homes' (4AD) - contributing vocals on two tracks, which have
been described by many as the album's highlights and has recorded
two albums with Arbol, an eponymous debut (Indus Sonica), and 'Dreams
Made of Paper' (Lejos Discos). Last year she made a guest appearance
on the Big Eyes Family Players's album, 'Do The Musiking'. Suzy is
also one half of The Winter Journey. 'The Other Side of the Mountain'
is Suzy's first solo album, and was recorded between January and July
2006. Musically, it follows on very much from where George left off,
hardly surprising, given that Suzy was responsible for writing and
performing about 90% of their material. "Suzy Mangion's voice
cuts through the muggy layer of post modernism, to deliver songs that
beautifully capture a sense of perpetual loss through the passing
of time itself" [The Wire] "When she's not collaborating
with the likes of Arbol and Piano Magic, Suzy Mangion writes intimate
torch songs with multi-instrumentalist Michael Varty. One minute she
sounds like Joni Mitchell crooning over a Wurlitzer, the next she's
whispering like Vincent Gallo's long lost cousin over a fragile score
of guitars, chimes, strings and loops. Either way, the results are
never less than mesmerizing" [Uncut] "George's adventures
in bricolage proffer to the listener the saddest, prettiest songs
about early surgical cinema, living in memory or a fearful search
for joy, that they will hear for a long time" [Sleazenation]
"George's suite of beautiful songs makes no vulgar attempt to
grab your attention, and its inward_looking focus put me in mind of
the woody folkisms of Vashti Bunyan, previously the last word in this
kind of hushed English Fireside reverie" [The Sound Projector].

Nyro, Laura
More Than A New Discovery (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 5th)
PS, UK Rev-Ola proudly re-presents the album which introduced to the
world the wonderful talent of Laura Nyro! More Than A New Discovery
(aka The First Songs) is openly informed by the styles of Laura's
youth. She had just turned 19 when she recorded the album in early
1966, and the songs retain a youthful exuberance and glisten with
beautiful pop melodies and then-fashionable, sturdy 1960s New York
arrangements. Laura's lyrics are already as poetically-charged and
mature as at her peak, from the wise "And When I Die" to
the observational approach of "Buy and Sell." Musically,
the album was obviously tailored to fit the prevailing landscape of
1960s female pop singers and it often has the same soulful atmosphere
of Dusty Springfield and Evie
Sands or the brash, bravura pop of Barbra Streisand, who was to take
"Stoney End" to the charts three years later. Although Laura's
albums would become more and more influential and adventurous, this,
her first outing, features the majority of her most famous and revered
compositions. Due to production decisions she did mot agree with,
Laura Nyro more or less disowned her debut for many years, until the
music fan in her began to appreciate the set forms as one might a
Motown hit of the period, no matter how overexposed and hackneyed.
With new manager David Geffen, a slew of covers of her material hitting
the charts, and a controversial showing at the Monterey Pop Festival,
Laura Nyro signed a favourable new deal with Columbia Records, making
some of the most essential albums of the late 1960s and 1970s...but
that is another, quite wonderful story. Listen now to where it all
began. Fantastic album by one of our very favourite artists! Beautifully
re-mastered in true RevOla style with lovely packaging as usual...
A must for all fans of Laura Nyro, and of classic New York girlpop...
the set form she made into so much more!

Our Sleepless Forest
S-T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 26TH)
PS, UK Absolutely stunning debut album of ambient electronic space
rock from a frighteningly young three-piece from South London - their
first full release, having had an early version of album track 'The
Tinderbox' included on the Type Records 'Free The Future' compilation.
Having met at school, Sam Purcell, Josh Rothberger and Karl Jawara
started experimenting with various musical instruments and sounds
using software and basic recording equipment, inspired by the music
they were into and with the aim of creating their own wall of sound.
After 14 months they emerged with something they were sufficiently
happy with to allow it to be heard by others, and ultimately that
brings us to the present day - an eight-track, 45-minute debut. Our
Sleepless Forest's music is multi-layered, complex and dense, yet
dedication and attention are rewarded as the intricate slow-build
melodies are revealed beneath the feedback, crackle and hiss. Reminiscent
at times of the likes of Loscil or even Radiohead's more out-there
moments but on the whole avoiding the predictable comparisons associated
with music of this genre, this is an album that simply has to be heard.
Press to follow; opening track 'Nomads' was played by Mary Anne Hobbs
a couple of months back, and influential Manchester-based website
Angry Ape have lined up an interview with the band. TRACKLISTING:
1. Nomads 2. The Tinderbox 3. Doors In Limbo 4. White Bird 5. Aircastles

Peculiar, Vinny
Goodbye My Angry Friend (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 12TH)
PS, UK There are times you can hear Nick Cave and Johnny Cash in these
power pop meets kitchen sink drama songs but a better comparison might
be Stephen Duffy for the romance-against-the-odds, me-against-the-world,
railing-against-the-dying-of-the-light feeling of this record."
Manchester song-writing maverick, performance poet and Smiths associate
Vinny Peculiar has cultivated an alternative music career spanning
the past 10 years collaborating with a diverse range of artists from
Bill Drummond to Bonehead. 'Goodbye My Angry Friend', his 7th studio
album, is an ambitious, vengeful, tuneful and intriguing collection
of songs. Produced by sonic magpie Tim Browne it fuses influences
that are, to many a pop music connoisseur, poles apart...from Nick
Cave to The Darkness...from Johnny Cash to Queen. Here is a record
that, for better or worse, plays by its own rules. The opening salvo
reflects upon the death of the Vinny Peculiar alter ego whilst 'Kiss
Me [I'm a Social Worker]' reeks of abuse and mistrust. 'Seasonal Affective
Disorder' is a tenderly affecting paean of mood disorder and melody.
'Lazy Bohemians' portrays and gently dismembers a world of would be
revolutionary misfits...a world in which Vinny stars as idler in chief.
From garage band symphonies to rock and roll nursery rhymes here is
a record of audacious musicality from an artist not simply content
to sit on the edge. Vinny Peculiar is prepared to jump.

of desires all from the most personal viewpoint yet captured in The

Robots In Disguise
We're In The Music Biz (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 5TH)
PS, UK 'Get 'em out for the boys,' is the reaction many women in music
still face. In fact, that's the phrase - albeit in French - that one
photographer used when shooting ROBOTS IN DISGUISE aka DEE PLUME (guitar
and vocals) and SUE DENIM (bass and vocals) for a French glossy, which
probably prefers to remain nameless. But while many would rant, huff
& puff or simply cave in, ROBOTS IN DISGUISE decided to celebrate
the launch of their 3rd album, WE'RE IN THE MUSIC BIZ, by beating
the boys at their own game. The maverick electro-pop duo with a reputation
for their fashion-forward style appears on the cover with immaculate
hair and make-up wearing skinny-minny shirts and ties. But what's
this? Those girls are naked but for layer of skillfully applied body
paint! 'We like to subvert people's expectations of us as a band and
have a bit of fun with it,' says agent provocateuse, Dee. 'People
have seen those pictures and it's so unexpected that they've not even
clocked it,' says Sue. Part riot grrl princesses, part monsters of
DIY musical mayhem, ROBOTS IN DISGUISE have enjoyed cult success in
France and Germany where they've toured extensively around their first
two albums, but now they're setting their sights closer to home, supporting
The Gossip on tour this summer and picking up fans from the likes
of CSS, The Klaxons, Princess Superstar and Chicks on Speed. WE'RE
IN THE MUSIC BIZ sees the Robots developing their signature sound
and tell-it-like-it-is lyrics, with a sharper, boppier and frequently
impossibly catchy feel. Produced by Chris Corner (Sneaker Pimps/ I
Am X) in Berlin, WE'RE IN THE MUSIC BIZ includes the hit single, THE
SEX HAS MADE ME STUPID, a hedonistic, future indie-dance classic of
what happens when you get off with someone you like. The sex, the
drink, the illegal substances - the sheer addictive mess and mayhem
that inevitably ensue from acting on attraction. Get it out for the
girls... Confirmed Press includes The London Paper, The Fly, Record
Collector, Stool pigeon, Mojo, AXM, SubVert Magazine, Loaded, Mixmag,
NME, Artrocker, DJ Magazine, Maxim. Loads more expected but too early
to confirm as yet. Track listing 1 We're in the music biz, 2 Cant

Saville, Robin/Doll Boy
Player Piano/ Prelude No.1 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 5TH)
PS, UK Like Burton and Taylor, some artists and labels are always
linked. Isan/ Robin Saville go way back with the Static Brothers and
we are chuffed as can be to release Robin's first solo single, a precursor
for his debut album. Dollboy have also stepped inside the Caravan
before, donning mittens and knocking back a Cab Sav while holing up
with the extended family, otherwise known as those dudes from Tunng.
Try finding that release nowadays. MC Doll (homeless Oliver Cherer)
Boy and his producer (social worker Robin Saville) strode into the
van with the idea of a split single, and who are we to turn our backs
on such street savvy? It's best to say that this hummus and sesame
seed breadstick is a mighty fine appetizer for Robin's debut solo
album. Planned for a release with Static Caravan, it's due to see
the light of day in 2008. For the past ten years, Robin Saville has
been precisely fifty percent of isan, a frankly seminal electronica
outfit whose influence has been acknowledged around the world. This
is his first solo release, a bouncy, weaving, piano-led lurcher which
harks back to the duo's earlier, more carefree roots. He also likes
to grow vegetables and make jam. Sublime electronica AND advice about
vegetable seeds for your garden? Now that's what we call good value.
Following a long list of highly regarded releases since 2004, Dollboy
returns with a re-voicing of JS Bach's Prelude No 1 in C Major (from
The Well Tempered Clavier), a characteristically swoonsome piece of
organic-electronic jingle-jangle majesty, featuring the sound of water-filled
bowls and a 1942 glass glockenspiel. What ensues is two minutes of
clicks, whirrs and beautiful sounds, bringing Bach into the binary
age - kick back, grab a glass of red wine and admire the warm glow.

Sequins, The
The Death of Style (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 5TH)
PS, UK Long awaited 12 track debut album from the best Best Midlands
indie pop band. Formed around the nucleus of Warwick University, the
five-piece deliver an album that builds upon the potential shown in
their two singles and transgresses that already high watermark. Sharing
a firm lineage with the Postcard and Sarah Records aesthetics, The
Sequins draw upon the best jangly guitar pop and artrock to create
a signature sound that puts them out of step with the current zeitgeist.
Eschewing the contemporary fashion with cold-hearted irony, The Sequins
aren't afraid to indulge their playful side or embrace the unfashionable.
This is music free of guilty pleasures and full of unabashed joy.
Although employing spider-like guitars and dizzying time signatures
in equal measure, they never once forget the importance of melody
or a good chorus. Recorded in South London in two short sessions,
The Death of Style is endearingly lo-fi but sparkles in all the right
places, providing a perfect snapshot of the live sound that has brought
The Sequins many devoted fans in the past year. Limited to 1000 specially
designed album sleeves, each release comes replete with it's own sequins
and a front cover which encourages fans to create their own unique
designs. Press: "this is immutable yet frail pop that makes my
heart beat faster and faster. 9/10" Drowned In Sound. "An
absolute must for indiepopsters everywhere" -The Fly. "Blissfully-tuneful
indie-pop contenders" - NME. "Wide eyed melodies and breakneck
energy" - Rough Trade. "Sharp jangling rhythms that swoop
and soar" - SoundsXP. "I'm too lost in the world of Sequins
and can't work out what I was going to do..." - John Kennedy,

Sparrow, The
The Complete CBS Recordings 1966-67 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY
5TH)
PS, UK After our amazing release by the legendary Mars Bonfire, here
is a follow-up of sorts....now listen carefully....Dennis Edmonton,
drummer Jerry Edmonton and bass player Nick St Nicholas had all played
together in Toronto 'British Invasion' band, Jack London & The
Sparrows in 1965. When the group split from singer Jack London, they
added new members, going through a succession of future Canadian music
stars, even swapping members back and forth with the legendary Mynah
Birds, before settling on permanent members John Kay and Goldy McJohn.
Soon, their new, high energy blues-rock style got them the attention
of the Rolling Stones agent Jerry Brandt, who got them a prestige
gig at Sybil Burton's hot nightclub Arthur in the summer of 1966.
A deal with Columbia Records followed, with a single "Tomorrow's
Ship" being the result. It failed to chart, as did the followup
"Green Bottle Lover", and The Sparrow decamped for California,
playing at every legendary venue with everyone you care to mention,
to a fair amount of acclaim. In June 1967, however, Dennis Edmonton
announced his decision to go solo, changing his name to Mars Bonfire.
This effectively fragmented the group, with St. Nicholas and new guitarist
Michael Monarch joining members of the Hard Times as T.I.M.E...though
Monarch soon left to join the other Sparrows in their new project
STEPPENWOLF...who broke through with songs written by Mars Bonfire
like "Born To Be Wild"....and were soon rejoined by St.
Nicholas... and so it was that all the members of THE SPARROW were
involved in the phenomenal success of STEPPENWOLF! A twisty turny
story, but, oh my, is the music worth it! The full Columbia recordings
of THE SPARROW including the lost audition tapes! Includes the first
full-on rock recording of "The Pusher" later made famous
by Steppenwolf...Beautifully remastered in true Rev-Ola style, with

also produced Jefferson Airplane and Harry Nilsson's Pandemonium Shadow

Who's In Your Dreams (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 5TH)
PS, US Astonishing debut from a promising new band from Glasgow, Scotland
where everyone is in a pop bandit's in the blood, it's in the water
and it's in the contract. Sandra and Laz have built a feedback wall
of sunshine sound out of old fuzz boxes and reverbed drums that recalls
some of the best C-86 pop from The Shop Assistants, Talulah Gosh,
The Primitives, or The Revolving Paint Dream. The debut single includes
the infectious lead track 'Who's In Your Dreams?' which is creating
quite the buzz on international indie blogs already. It's a hip shaking
pop gem with tambourines, splendid melodies, loads of reverb and just
the recommended dosage of ba-da-ba's. 'It Rains On Other Planets'
is a shimmering wall of sound with noisy guitars, steady drumming,
piercing organ and handclaps, while 'My Day Today' is an immediate
150 bpm pop hit with jangling guitars and keyboards that in a parallel
universe would fill dance floors to capacity. Final track 'Factory
Girl' is a harmonic wall of pop based around the Warhol Superstar
phenomenon think Mary Chain meets The Primitives and you're nearly
there. An especially invigorating addition to the Matinée catalog,
Strawberry Whiplash are early contenders for favorite new band of

with his ideas and usage of sound. It is this comfort, which allows
Apparatus to envelop the listener in a profoundly personal way. Lofty
classic ambient refrains, shoegaze splendor and muted broken beat
trickery are all stylistic fair game. Comparisons can be made to a
wide rage of artists such as Ben Frost, Eno, Namlook, and even label
mate Bitcrush. As each SubtractieLAD album seems to top the previous,
the anticipation is building for what is to come from this bright
talent in electronic music.

Tiger Lou
The Loyal (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FABRUARY 19TH)
PS, US Domestic release for Tiger Lou's latest. A Spring 2008 tour
is in the works as well! Meet Rasmus Kellerman. This is the guy behind
Tiger Lou. It's a band; for all intents and purposes, he's the band.
He writes the songs, plays and produces them. For now. Kellerman will
tell you not to look too close at "just an indie band, like many
other indie bands, with a big heart." But not listening closely
to Tiger Lou would be to sell it short. The
Loyal, the band's second album, is on the surface, just music. A bunch
of songs written by some guy from Oxelösund, Sweden. Only these
tunes breathe, they're dynamic, alive. Straight from the heart of
some guy now living in Stockholm. And he wouldn't say the band had
heart if, to some extent, he wanted you to know the music was sincere.
Thirteen atmospheric, incorporeal (but alive) tracks that, if you
put them under a microscope, would reveal a molecular pattern (and
movement) identical to Kellerman's. Maybe that's why he'd like you
to look plainly upon his work: he's already seen himself at such a
high magnification, a potentially painful zoom into who and what he
is, and where he came from.

Valet
Naked Acid (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MARCH 4TH)
PS, US 2nd solo release from Portland artist Valet, aka HONEY OWENS.
She states: "These songs were Inspired by the Pacific Northwest
landscape, semi-conscious dream states & the idea of one's dna
code being accessed as eternal memory. I started off w/ the idea to
make a 'songs' record but it really didn't turn out that way. Instead
the record became it's own story. Track one is a static beach journey
duet w/ ADRIAN ORANGE & tracks 3, 4 & 5 are collaborations
w/ MARK EVAN BURDEN (Silentist) on drums."

I Spider (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 5th)
PS, UK CLASSIC PROGRESSIVE ROCK ALBUM - NOW 24-BIT REMASTERED FROM
THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES. NEW ESSAY & INTERVIEW WITH DAVE LAWSON.
"I Spider" is truly a lost classic of the Progressive era.
Originally released by Polydor Records in 1970, the album was influenced
by the experiments of groups such as KING CRIMSON, GENTLE GIANT et
al, but was more than a mere clone of these bands. The group evolved
from an excellent blues influenced band who released three albums
for Deram, who then recruited Keyboard player and writer DAVE LAWSON
and recorded their final album. The musicianship on the album was
excellent and Keyboard player DAVE LAWSON's compositions were groundbreaking
and memorable. The group soon evolved into SAMURAI (whose eponymous
album is also released by ESOTERIC this month). This Esoteric reissue
is remastered from the original master tapes and features two bonus
tracks recorded live in Sweden in 1971, a booklet with previously
unseen photographs and an interview with DAVE LAWSON.

Wild Swans
Bringing Home the Ashes (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 12TH)
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Songs about war and religious faith
were not exclusive to U2 in the '80s. Liverpool, England's the Wild
Swans ventured into U2 territory on their 1988 debut album, Bringing
Home the Ashes, while sustaining their distinctive sound. The haunting
voice of Paul Simpson injects every track with emotional weight; whether
he is trying to convey joy or sorrow, his icy baritone chills to the
bone. His vocals combine Scott Walker's lonely croon with the brooding
angst of Ian McNabb from fellow Liverpudlians the Icicle Works...
As enthralling as U2 were in the '80s, they never sounded as gorgeous
as the Wild Swans do on Bringing Home the Ashes... Simpson's sparkling
voice and Kelly's ethereal guitars provide the album with an undeniably
romantic feel. Every track is suffused with radiant pop hooks."
