Deerhunter "Microcastle/Weird Era Cont." CD $12.25 (Kranky)
New album from Atlas Sound's Bradford Cox & Co explores other-dimensional dronescapes with a thumping pop heart. It's no surprise that baroque, sugary-sweet melodies, akin to Beach Boys and Grizzly Bear simultaneously, abound in Deerhunter's Spacemen 3/Spiritualized (and extended family) psych-vibrancies. What is surprising is the 11th hour addition of a full-length bonus album, Weird Era Cont., making this highly-anticipated new release a double-album masterpiece. Win, win! Sound samples on our front page.

Roy's Vinyl Pick of the Week

Crystal Stilts "Alight Of Night" LP $12.00 (Slumberland)
Alight of Night delivers on the promise of those early singles. There is an unmistakable flavor of The Velvet Underground to be had, but Crystal Stilts' spectral avant-garage also references the spooked '60s Texas psych of The 13th Floor Elevators and Red Crayola, the gothic blues/punk howl of The Gun Club, the dark, experimental DIYism of early Flying Nun/Xpressway groups Pin Group and Plagal Grind, and a post-punk minimalism that brings to mind early Rough Trade and Factory releases. A strong pop element brings to mind the buzzsaw bubblegum of early Jesus and Mary Chain B-sides and Meat Whiplash. Sound samples on our front page.

23 Skidoo
Urban Gamelan
PS, UK Initially active between 1979 and 1987, 23 Skidoo released a series of genre-defining records fusing post-punk, dub, industrial, world and hip-hop styles. Singles include Last Words, Tearing Up The Plans, Coup and Language. Albums include Seven Songs, The Culling Is Coming and Urban Gamelan. In 2000 the group returned with a self-titled album, 23 Skidoo, and remain hugely influential. Originally released on Illuminated Records in August 1984, the album Urban Gamelan consolidated Skidoo's position as supreme avant-gardists with uncommon commercial nous. "Coup thundered over the horizon earlier this year. A mighty 45, it's a vinyl TV cop show car chase driven by Sketch Martin's bass, with Aswad's horn section blazing away in hot pursuit" (NME, 1984); "Skidoo allowed black America back in. And they let the rest of the world get a look in, too." (Simon Reynolds, Rip It Up & Start Again, 2005). Digitally remastered, this extended CD features three bonus tracks including the original 12" single mixes of Language and the mighty Coup - the latter oddly similar to the 1997 smash by the Chemical Brothers, Block Rockin' Beats. The booklet also features a detailed history of the elusive group, with contributions from Skidoo members past and present.

23 Skidoo
Just Like Everybody
PS, UK Initially active between 1979 and 1986, 23 Skidoo released a series of genre-defining records fusing post-punk, dub, industrial, world and hip-hop styles. Their classic singles include Last Words, Tearing Up The Plans, Coup and Language. Albums include Seven Songs (an indie chart #1), The Culling Is Coming and Urban Gamelan. In 2000 the group returned with a self-titled album, 23 Skidoo, and remain hugely influential. Just Like Everybody (disc one) is a compilation covering 1980 to 1986, and includes the full 12" versions of Skidoo's signature singles such as Last Words, Coup, Language and Assassin, as well as key album tracks, and both sides of rare debut Ethics from 1980. The second disc, Just Like Everybody (Part Two), gathers together 17 tracks recorded by the group during the 1990s, and was originally released on the band's own Ronin label in 2002. Digitally remastered, most of the tracks and mixes on this double CD set are exclusive, and are not repeated on the other 23 Skidoo CDs in LTM's reissue program. The booklet also features a detailed history of the group, with contributions from Skidoo members past and present.

A Cuckoo
Destination Unknown
PS, US "There is something reassuringly old fashioned about A Cuckoo, a singular individual who dwells on the Yorkshire Moors and has a fixation with sepia-toned Edwardiana, music boxes and the like... MOJO would like to add that we hope that A Cuckoo's forthcoming album will be available on 78. It would seem impolite if it wasn't." - MOJO By the age of 17 A Cuckoo had already played in respected UK bands Blue Aeroplanes and House of Love. In his early 20s he started to create and produce his own music. In the meantime he ended up working nearly full time as a composer for the BBC, which is where he "learnt how to orchestrate and paint sonic pictures." Quietly A Cuckoo began putting some of the rough ideas that he was developing up on MySpace. The page quickly began to gather a list of complimentary comments and was visited by A Girl called Eddy (former Le Grand Magistery recording artist, currently signed to Anti), who asked what the situation was with the release of his material. "Um, they're only rough snippets!" replied A Cuckoo, so A Girl Called Eddy put him in touch with Matthew Jacobson from Le Grand Magistery who insisted he finish the album so he could release it. The result is 'Destination Unknown'. A magical and dusty esoteric mix of styles that seems to effortlessly project a work of humble yet visionary compositions and poetry. Filled with music boxes, accordions, mandolins, bells, a quartet, acoustic guitars, and endless melody. "Great songs" - Chris Difford of Squeeze

A Handful Of Dust
Now Gods, Stand Up For Bastards/The Philosophik Mercury
PS , US Now Gods, Stand Up For Bastards/The Philosophik Mercury is a double-disc re-issue of two limited and long out-of-print works by this obscure enigma. Plunging straight into the chasm of ultra-minimalist abrasion and chaotic improv, these two records stand as unrelenting and engrossing epics of guitar feedback, disintegrating electronic sound, string-shredding violin abuse, and other facets of impassioned iconoclasm. Recommended for lovers of AMM, Henry Flynt, and Hijokaidan. A Handful of Dust are a group consisting of a core duo of Bruce Russell (The Dead C) and Alastair Galbraith. Formed in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1990.

Abelcain & Cdatakill
Passage
PS, GERMANY All good things are three: Abelcain and Cdatakill, two of the most essential breakcore act to have ever graced this scene, pair up once again on "Passage", a full length CD presenting for the first time their tracks from the "Six Stigmata" and "Playing with Knives" record, enriched by four new collaborations. Hard-hitting, highly varied and presenting anew some cornerstone material of the breakcore sound, "Passage" is a mandatory release not only for fans of these two veterans, but for anybody who intends on understanding what breakcore is about. Following 2007's two collaborative 12" ("Bleeding Hearts vol 1 and 2", adn82 & adn83), Cdatakill invites another fiendish friend to Ad Noiseam, this time his long-time partner and co-shredder Abelcain. Both acts, which are among the very few veterans of the American breakcore scene to be still active, have finally given birth to a full length CD, which present their repeated collaborations over the years. "Passage" is the long awaited release on CD of two split 12" by these two acts (released by Zhark Intl and Low Res in 2002) and four new tracks written specially for this project. Armed with a decade of beats and rhythms shattering, Cdatakill and Abelcain have both matured, but look back dearly at their first collaborations. "Passage" opens with three tracks written by each musician, in which Marty Frank (Abelcain) presents his staccato drumming and sudden breaks, while Zak Roberts (Cdatakill) already leave space for some dark sci-fi soundscapes between his breakcore avalanches. These tracks are followed by four from the "Playing With Knives" 12", in which some of each acts' best known tracks are remixed by the other one (such as Abelcain's hard hitting "Faust" or Cdatakill's epic "Imperial Passage"). Finally, let's fast-forward six years to 2008 and see what sort of new treatment Abelcain and Cdatakill reserved to each other's material. The first hasn't slowed down his tempo a bit, and adds some extra oomph to two tracks taken from Cdatakill's moody "Valentine" album. Zak Roberts's gritty and complex remixes of recent Abelcain track close the circle. Cdatakill and Abelcain, two acts at the very centre of the breakcore scene, finally go through their rites of passage together, and demonstrate again that their dry, fast and dark blend of the genre is as relevant and necessary as ever. Artwork by Magnus Blomster. Tracks 1 to 6 were originally released on Zhark International as "The Six Stigmata" (zhark12005) in 2002. Tracks 7 to 10 were originally released on Low
Res as "Playing With Knives" (low 011) in 2002.

Analogue Minefield
Visions In Sonic Sense
PS, UK 3D digipak with 3D-spex!!! Analogue Mindfield's Gizzy D explains that the groups wants to, "create auditory soundscapes of challenging yet accessible music, whilst retaining an inspired socially conscious theme to our tunes". This ferociously creative outfit indeed harks back to a golden age when reggae called itself roots and planted socially conscious lyrics into the public's consciousness. Delivered with sensitivity and passion over stellar riddims, laid down by musicians with an intrinsic feel for the groove, whilst adding a 21st century update in message and incoming musical influences, the results are 100% dynamite. The three main participants are Gizzy D, Snapper J and Kitty B, who are joined on their third studio album, Visions In Sonic Sense, by a supporting cast of singers and players including MC Ishu (Step 13, Manasseh Soundsystem), MC Jaz (DJ Reeza, Scribble Orchestra and now Analogue Mindfield's new live MC), techno forager Suspira (Transient Dreams who have worked with Eat Static and Ozric Tentacles), Asian Dub Foundation's Dr Das on occasional bass and G Frequency (Goontrax, Domination Records) providing some luscious double bass and top turntablism. From the upbeat politically-biting skank of Political Patsy to haunting female-sung ballad Reflections, they handle conscious roots outings like Mediocracy and the brass-splattered toast of Eire Beag like the great Jamaican vocal groups of the 70s but still take the form to new vistas in roots dub ballad Dread Up, all bathed in a rich dub afterglow. Be Careful Out There could be a new street anthem for the 21st century while Music Man seems to put an 80s electro-pop outing through the dub blender. Over the years, Analogue Mindfield have worked with a diverse array of UK and Jamaican musicians and made a substantial impact with their first two albums, 2006's Digital Brainwave and last year's A Fine Adjustment of Time. Their third album is a mature affirmation of their vision and talent for working with sympathetic co-conspirators while grasping the original multi-cultural roots ethic and taking it into modern times. As to be expected from a Malicious Damage act, Analogue Mindfield don't confine themselves to the one genre they might be identified with: Soul Crew brings in elements of UK free party dub-techno while Burnt Out plants its incisive rhythms over a drum 'n' bass charge. The possibilities are infinite. Leftfield's Cheshire Cat once described the band as, "a heavyweight mix of reggae, old school dub with vibrant brass-driven skankŠ like a mouthful of liquorice allsorts!" while Primal Scream's mighty Mani declared, "You've got to get Weatherall to listen to these tracks man, he'll fookin' love em!" So will you.

Another Electronic Musician
Five
PS, US For most of n5MD's existence the "IDM" ( Intelligent Dance Music) genre descriptor has been used sparingly and only for those artists that utilize a more strict electronic pallet. We shy away from such a specific genre tag because, for the most part, the music created by our artists lacks the "D" of DM...yes, dance. That trend changes with Another Electronic Musician's latest album "Five", Jase Rex's fifth release under the n5MD group of labels. Five puts the dance back into Intelligent Dance Music through the fusion of Techno, House, Electro, and Jazz with Rex's now signature sculpted sound. He has created something unique while leaving the genre's subtler signposts intact to lead the way. "Five" pushes and pulls you to where IDM used to before it went astray with its over the top cuts and glitch and puts the focus back in the mind and hips.

Baker, Aidan
I Too, Wish To Be Absorbed
PS, US Aidan Baker's I Wish Too, To Be Absorbed is a 2 disc compilation of tracks from various out-of-print, limited edition releases spanning the last 10 years of Baker's output, ranging from his very first release to material that was featured on the soundtrack to a book of his poetry. Toronto based composer Aidan Baker works under his own name, under the name Nadja along with bassist Leah Buckareff and also with the trio ARC. Hailing from the Great White North, Baker incorporates guitar, drums, bass, voice and tape loops into his myriad work hauling down a long iceberg of frigid doom, bliss and sound collage. He has also composed work for the The Penderecki String Quartet & The Uxbridge Chamber Choir and he is also a published poet. The first disc in the set features shorter, perhaps more accessible tunes with a wide range of instrumentation and songs ranging from minimal drone to delicate post-rock to ambient trip-hop. The second disc features longer, more drone/experimental-oriented pieces, primarily using the guitar (with the odd tapeloops and vocals) as the primary sound source. Adventures in ambience. Sonic immersion. Introspective dronescapes.

Blithe Sons, The
The Great Orthochromatic Wheel
PS, US The Great Orthochromatic Wheel is The Blithe Sons first full-length release since 2004. In the years since the California duo of Loren Chasse and Glenn Donaldson may have traversed poppy fields and swam to aqua cities though mostly they've remained active with their Jewelled Antler offshoots: Ov, Of, and Child Readers (Chasse ) or Skygreen Leopards and Flying Canon (Donaldson) and both in Thuja. These five songs combine nature's melodic pull and minimalist songs forms summoned by a miniature orchestra of eclectic instruments. Each LP side flaunts a different depth of the Sons, one recorded outdoors and the other inside. The indoor set consists of slow-motion ballads built on hymn-like organ, nylon string guitar, analog drum machine & stark percussion. The outdoor side offers a web of exotic wind-instruments & battery-powered electronics reverberating in a cavernous hall cut in the side of a sea-cliff. Each 500 copies contain a download coupon for a free MP3 version of the album. The Blithe Sons have released five other full-length albums since 2001 for Family Vineyard, Chocolate Monk and Jewelled Antler. In 2007 the Sons curated the sixth volume of Music Fellowship's triptych series bringing together Pekko Kappi and Claypipe for a three-way split

Bloom, Kath
Terror
PS, AUSTRALIA "One of the most beautiful singers ever. Heartbreaking." - Devendra Banhart "I consider myself her biggest fan." - Josephine Foster Terror is the follow-up to Finally, avant-folk legend Kath Bloom's 2006 return to active musical duty. The new album was recorded at Barking Spider Studios in Warren, Connecticut with Kath and her husband Stan Bronski. Kath was born and raised in New Haven, CT, where she learned to play guitar among the headstones of her local cemetery. She met avant-garde guitarist Loren Mazzacane Connors in 1976 and together they recorded six limited edition albums of fragile folk and blues melodies between 1981 and 1984. Chapter Music will be re-releasing four of these albums - Sing The Children Over, Sand In My Shoe, Restless Faithful Desperate and Moonlight - as a pair of two disc sets in the coming months. There is also a tribute album in the works, with songs by Bill Callahan, The Concretes, Mark Kozelek, Scout Niblett and others. Her new songs, however, reveal a singer and songwriter as accomplished and affecting as Lucinda Williams or Gillian Welch. Most tracks primarily feature Kath's gentle guitar picking, haunting vocals, and mournful harmonica, although guitarist Marty Carlson (owner of Barking Spider Studios), husband Stan and longtime collaborator Tom Hanford added finishing touches to many tracks. The material ranges in vintage from brand new (i.e. "Marty, I just wrote this yesterday") to as far back as her days with Loren (Something To Tell You). After her collaborations with Connors, Kath entered a period of child-rearing and family life, returning to recording in the early 90s. Director Richard Linklater discovered Bloom's music and featured her song Come Here in a pivotal scene in his 1995 film Before Sunrise. By then, Bloom had begun recording again in earnest, self-releasing a series of cassettes and CD-Rs. Finally, released on Chapter Music in 2006 was her first non CD-R release since 1984. Presently, Kath trains horses and plays with her band Love at Work (which includes Tom Hanford and husband Stan) offering a musical tour de force of programs for children and adults, as well as playing solo shows in the Northeastern US.

Bloom, Kath & Loren Connors
Sing The Children Over/Sand In My Shoe
PS, AUSTRALIA Chapter music is honored to announce the first of two double disc reissues by extraordinary early 80s folk duo Kath Bloom and Loren Connors. Meeting in 1976 in their hometown New Haven, CT, Kath Bloom and Loren Connors formed a creative partnership that has haunted psych-folk fans ever since, releasing six albums of fragile avant-garde folk-blues in miniscule quantities, all of which now change hands for huge sums. At first, Kath would act out monologues while Loren played his free-form guitar, extrapolated from Mississippi Delta and Chicago blues. But while Loren worked on his now legendary nine volume series Unaccompanied Acoustic Guitar Improvisations, he and Kath's performances gradually became more song-based. Kath began practicing guitar among the headstones of New Haven's Grove Street cemetery, while Loren's idiosyncratic style had been developing since the 1960s. By the early 80s, after self-releasing two limited edition live albums, the duo were playing occasionally outside of New Haven, and soon Boston independent label Ambiguous Records approached them to record their first studio effort.

Bookish, Simon
Everything/Everything
PS, US An unpredictable and dramatic "big band song cycle about science and information", Everything/Everything is a new departure for Simon Bookish, being his first album for TOMLAB. Additionally, whilst previous Simon Bookish releases have been informed by the sounds of digital synthesizers, Everything/Everything does away with them entirely to focus on live instruments. Scored for an ensemble dominated by saxophones, brass, piano, harp and Far sa organ, it features luminaries from both the jazz and experimental classical music scenes. Whilst this is almost certainly his most pop oriented release to date, Everything/Everything, as it's name suggests, nds room for moments of racing Philip Glass minimalism, lop-sided disco, expressionist cabaret, and even an eery ambient interlude. Lyrically, the album's concept is "the - good of information" in our modern age, taking in chemistry and ecology, language and art, sometimes surreal, sometimes humorous, sometimes provocative, a weird blur of fact and action, delivered in Bookish's distinctive English eccentric vocal. It's only natural that Simon Bookish would want to tackle this chaos of stuff, since 'Simon Bookish' is the pseudonym of London-based composer Leo Chadburn, whose diverse recent work has included everything from sound-art installations in Bregenz, Austria, improvisation and guest spots with Leafcutter John and Polar Bear's Seb Rochford, and computer music for contemporary dance at the Royal Opera House to an acclaimed appearance with the National Theatre as "The Singer" in Brecht's "Caucasian Chalk Circle".

Broken Note
Crux / Zealot
PS, GERMANY Broken Note puts the grist back in dubstep for their first record on Ad Noiseam, and demonstrates how heavy, dark and efficient this genre can be. Shattered, colossal and bridging dubstep and breakcore, the two tracks on this 12" are guaranteed to pack dance floors and ruin a few subwoofers. Having cut their teeth with a début 12" on Peace Off's heavy dubstep sub label Ruff in early 2008, the London-based duo Broken Note present their sophomore effort on Ad Noiseam with this "Crux / Zealot" (adn102). While dubstep has over the years mutated in various sub-genres and variations, Broken Note's blend is of the colossal and dark kind. Tapping in breakcore for the density of their sound, shattering their 2-step influences in a myriad of details, and not afraid of supporting their mammoth-like basses with rude, heavy beats, these musicians come up with something that finally proves that dubstep can be as massive as it was famed to be. This record's dub plates have already proved to be highly efficient DJ tools, packing dance floors for months. Here comes the loud, heavy and low end-rich final cut. A remarkable record from a striking act.

Chandeliers
Thrush
PS, US Electronic art-funk band CHANDELIERS, residents of Chicago's Shape Shoppe loft/recording studio, present their debut LP, The Thrush, on the newly formed Obey Your Brain imprint. Comprised of multi-instumentalists from Chicago's blossoming young avant-rock scene, Chandeliers are a phenomenon in unclassifiable modern music. Having adopted the collective spirit of kraut-rock bands like Can and Faust, the group functions as a unified whole with no dominant members. This approach gives them a more intuitive and unpredictable approach to composing. An album with the flow of a mix-tape, The Thrush is at home bangin' in your trunk or hypnotizing on your headphones. Kraftwerk is a clear reference, but with influences ranging from Eastern melodies to the sonically dirty rhythmic propulsion of Konono No.1, and the crunked-out, psychedelic hip-hop of J-Dilla, Chandeliers always keep listeners on their toes. Includes a download code for a digital version of the album as well as two bonus videos. Upcoming East Coast tour with Baltimore's Thrust Lab this fall.

Cheval Sombre
I Found It Not So
PS, UK Because the night belongs to lovers, or in this case the remnants of love: some records are ideal listening for specific times of the day, and the latest languid single from Cheval Sombre is best savored in the twilight. I Found It Not So and Where Did Our Love Go - a re-imagining of the Supremes' lovelorn plea - are coupled here on VAN172, a pairing of moonlit laments cloaked in hushed tones and quiet yearning. These two sides of softly building melancholia find Cheval Sombre teaming up with Sonic Boom, who features here as well as lending production touches, and with Dean Wareham (Galaxie 500, Luna...) and Britta Phillips (Luna). I Found It Not So is infused with a sense of sleepy reverie; a low-key lullaby which echoes and chimes while floating around your sub-conscious. Sumptuously trip-wired with sveltely layered psychotropic glazes of looping out of body transcendental hypnotics, plangent guitar melodies creep and intertwine, moving to a warm climax. It's all topped off with barely-there vocals, a whispered dream filled with a sense of longing which belies the almost post-coital atmosphere. Likewise, the low-key facsimile of Where Did Our Love Go licks off all traces of a sugary Motown coating and reveals a dark, vulnerable tale of loss, regret and desire. Yep it's a cover of the legendary Holland / Dozier / Holland penned gem and the composition that was to give the Supremes their first number one hit way back in '64. Okay three releases (two on Static Caravan) in fairly quick succession from New York poet / musician Christopher Porpora or as he's better known to those cosmic kids with their finger on the pulse - Cheval Sombre. As well as "It's a Shame / Little Bit of Heaven" which sold out on pre-sale, there is a green vinyl 7" on Trensmat. A full-length Cheval Sombre LP will be released early 2009 on Double Feature Records, the new label run by Dean Wareham. Edition of 500 on 7" wax with artwork by Ben Javens. For fans of Galaxie 500, Spaceman 3, Luna, Sonic Boom and Low.

Connors, Loren
The Moon Last Night
PS, US The Moon Last Night perfectly captures the complex and contemporary guitar style of Loren Connors - totally desolate yet wound in echoy, rich black clouds that weep of Mississippi ghost blues and chiming strings. This two-part suite combines the artist's love of choral music, Giacinto Scelsi and the naked Venusian guitar style he evangelized across a string of private press LPs in the late 1980s. Conjured solely from a Fender six-string and reverb effects, solitary notes swirl and loft gently from distant points before collecting into booming clusters. Recorded in Connors' Brooklyn apartment during the winter of 2008, the rustles of clothes and a creaking chair appear throughout. Like a kaleidoscope or the cover art itself - a 1973 painting by Connors - subterranean layers of composition and melodic streams are uncovered in each listen. Pressed in an edition of 500 one-sided translucent yellow LPs Connors has released over 50 albums since his 1978 debut, and since 1999 he has recorded over two dozen solo and collaborative albums with Suzanne Langille, John Fahey, David Grubbs, Christina Carter, Jandek, and Jim O'Rourke.

Creedence Clearwater Revival
Bayou Country: 40th Anniversary [expanded re-issue]
PS, US Remastered with bonus tracks. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Opening slowly with the dark, swampy "Born on the Bayou," Bayou Country reveals an assured Creedence Clearwater Revival, a band that has found its voice between their first and second album. It's not just that "Born on the Bayou" announces that CCR has discovered its sound -- it reveals the extent of John Fogerty's myth-making. With this song, he sketches out his persona; it makes him sound as if he crawled out of the backwoods of Louisiana instead of being a native San Franciscan. He carries this illusion throughout the record, through the ominous meanderings of "Graveyard Train" through the stoked cover of "Good Golly Miss Molly" to "Keep on Chooglin'," which rides out a southern-fried groove for nearly eight minutes. At the heart of Bayou Country, as well as Fogerty's myth and Creedence's entire career, is "Proud Mary." A riverboat tale where the narrator leaves a good job in the city for a life rolling down the river, the song is filled with details that ring so true that it feels autobiographical. The lyric is married to music that is utterly unique yet curiously timeless, blending rockabilly, country, and Stax R&B into something utterly distinctive and addictive. "Proud Mary" is the emotional fulcrum at the center of Fogerty's seductive imaginary Americana, and while it's the best song here, his other songs are no slouch, either. "Born on the Bayou" is a magnificent piece of swamp-rock, "Penthouse Pauper" is a first-rate rocker with the angry undertow apparent on "Porterville" and "Bootleg" is a minor masterpiece, thanks to its tough acoustic foundation, sterling guitar work, and clever story. All the songs add up to a superb statement of purpose, a record that captures Creedence Clearwater Revival's muscular, spare, deceptively simple sound as an evocative portrait of America."

Creedence Clearwater Revival
Green River: 40th Anniversary [expanded re-issue]
PS, US Remastered with bonus tracks. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "If anything, CCR's third album Green River represents the full flower of their classic sound initially essayed on its predecessor, Bayou Country. One of the differences between the two albums is that Green River is tighter, with none of the five-minute-plus jams that filled out both their debut and Bayou Country, but the true key to its success is a peak in John Fogerty's creativity. Although CCR had at least one cover on each album, they relied on Fogerty to crank out new material every month. He was writing so frequently that the craft became second-nature and he laid his emotions and fears bare, perhaps unintentionally. Perhaps that's why Green River has fear, anger, dread, and weariness creeping on the edges of gleeful music. This was a band that played rock & roll so joyously that they masked the, well, "sinister" undercurrents in Fogerty's songs. "Bad Moon Rising" has the famous line "Hope you've got your things together/Hope you're quite prepared to die," but that was only the most obvious indication of Fogerty's gloom. Consider all the other dark touches: the "Sinister purpose knocking at your door"; the chaos of "Commotion"; the threat of death in "Tombstone Shadow"; you only return to the idyllic "Green River" once you get lost and realize the "world is smolderin'." Even the ballads have a strong melancholy undercurrent, highlighted by "Lodi," where Fogerty imagines himself stuck playing in dead-end towns for the rest of his life. Not the typical thoughts of a newly famous rock & roller, but certainly an indication of Fogerty's inner tumult. For all its darkness, Green River is ultimately welcoming music, since the band rocks hard and bright and the melancholy feels comforting, not alienating."

Creedence Clearwater Revival
Willy & the Poor Boys: 40th Anniversary [expanded re-issue]
PS, US Remastered with bonus tracks. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Make no mistake, Willie & the Poor Boys is a fun record, perhaps the breeziest album CCR ever made. Apart from the eerie minor-key closer "Effigy" (one of John Fogerty's most haunting numbers), there is little of the doom that colored Green River. Fogerty's rage remains, blazing to the forefront on "Fortunate Son," a working-class protest song that cuts harder than any of the explicit Vietnam protest songs of the era, which is one of the reasons that it hasn't aged where its peers have. Also, there's that unbridled vocal from Fogerty and the ferocious playing on CCR, which both sound fresh as they did upon release. "Fortunate Son" is one of the greatest, hardest rock & rollers ever cut, so it might seem to be out of step with an album that is pretty laid-back and friendly, but there's that elemental joy that by late '69 was one of CCR's main trademarks. That joy runs throughout the album, from the gleeful single "Down on the Corner" and the lazy jugband blues of "Poorboy Shuffle" through the great slow blues jam "Feelin' Blue" to the great rockabilly spiritual "Don't Look Now," one of Fogerty's overlooked gems. The covers don't feel like throwaways, either, since both "Cotton Fields" and "The Midnight Special" have been overhauled to feel like genuine CCR songs. It all adds up to one of the greatest pure rock & roll records ever cut."

Creedence Clearwater Revival
Self-Titled: 40th Anniversary [expanded re-issue]
PS, US Remastered with bonus tracks. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Released in the summer of 1968 -- a year after the summer of love, but still in the thick of the Age of Aquarius - Creedence Clearwater Revival's self-titled debut album was gloriously out-of-step with the times, teeming with John Fogerty's Americana fascinations. While many of Fogerty's obsessions and CCR's signatures are in place -- weird blues ("I Put a Spell on You"), Stax R&B (Wilson Pickett's "Ninety-Nine and a Half"), rockabilly ("Susie Q"), winding instrumental interplay, the swamp sound, and songs for "The Working Man" -- the band was still finding their way. Out of all their records (discounting Mardi Gras), this is the one that sounds the most like its era, thanks to the wordless vocal harmonies toward the end of "Susie Q," the backward guitars on "Gloomy," and the directionless, awkward jamming that concludes "Walking on the Water." Still, the band's sound is vibrant, with gutsy arrangements that borrow equally from Sun, Stax, and the swamp. Fogerty's songwriting is a little tentative. Not for nothing were two of the three singles pulled from the album covers (Dale Hawkins' "Susie Q," Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I Put a Spell on You") -- he wasn't an accomplished tunesmith yet. Though "The Working Man" isn't bad, the true exception is that third single, "Porterville," an exceptional song with great hooks, an underlying sense of menace, and the first inkling of the working-class rage that fueled such landmarks as "Fortunate Son." It's the song that points the way to the breakthrough of Bayou Country, but the rest of the album shouldn't be dismissed, because judged simply against the rock & roll of its time, it rises above its peers."

Crystal Stilts
Alight Of Night
PS, US Alight of Night delivers on the promise of those early singles.

Dears, The
Missiles
PS, SPAIN The Dears have not gone away and come back, but they have been transformed: by experience, by necessity, by life and its manifold curveballs. And with their new album, MISSILES, they have emerged as elder statesmen of the Canadian indie rock renaissance... Recorded quickly, the album is a feast of stripped-down arrangements and raw emotion served up like a rustic meal, its songs polished but still containing traces of the rough soil from which they were born. The most explicit example is the affecting final track, Saviour, whose vocal track - an original demo take, recorded with a hand-held microphone only moments after the final lyrics were written - remains unadulterated, vulnerable amongst the organ swells and chorus of children's voices. The music is restrained, yet there is an urgency to the lyrics. Lightburn is the confessor: first decoding, then submitting. Yanchak, whose striking voice is more present than on past albums, is the protector: nurturing and unbreakable.

He proved that he can DJ fast & dense w/ his influential 'Gold Teeth Thief' & 'Minesweeper Suite' mixes - now it's time for the sensual slow dance of a (relatively) smooth turntablist experience that deepens on repeat listens. How many DJs do you know who commission a string quartet for their latest mix? This is surely his most "listenable" mix to date, blended seamlessly w/ elements from UK dubstep & Brooklyn dancehall to Berlin abstraction, not to mention Brazil (Maga Bo), Finland (Clouds), Australia (Dead Leaf) & more. This explores a wealth of new material - almost half of it previously unreleased
- in a mix that is deep, contemplative & contagious

Flashy
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Electric Six's fifth album kicks off with the brassy, Latin-tinged "Gay Bar Part Two," which has absolutely nothing to do with the original "Gay Bar" but everything to do with Dick Valentine and company's finely honed sense of the ridiculous. Harking back to one of their Fire hits with this songtitle was intended as a shameless marketing ploy, but Flashy feels like a shout-out to the band's first album in other ways: the band dials down the disco-rock of albums like Switzerland and I Shall Exterminate Everything Around Me That Restricts Me from Being the Master in favor of the gloriously bombastic hard rock-meets-new wave of Fire's album tracks...keeping it deliciously unclear if Electric Six are the highest of the lowbrow or the lowest of the highbrow."

Flaherty, Paul & Bill Nace & Thurston Moore
S-T
PS, US ALREADY NEARLY OUT OF PRINT - ORDER NOW! PAUL FLAHERTY has been a direct lifeline to the radical free-reed lineage of Albert Ayler, John Gilmore, Peter Brotzmann & Arthur Doyle for as long as we can recall. In the '90s Flaherty met BILL NACE through a mutual musician friend, Chris Corsano, in Northampton, MA - an area that fostered a contemporary free-noise-space-weird underground where free thinking minds were liberated to godhead heights. The 2 played together as a duo for quite some time around this period. THURSTON MOORE (of SONIC YOUTH) had been tracking Flaherty's comet whilst perusing dog-eared copies of Cadence mag in the early 90s. He eventually booked the infamous Flaherty-Colbourne group for their 1st ever NYC gig at the legendary nowdefunct Cooler club. In 98 Moore & his family escaped to free-zone Northampton & immediately fell in Flaherty &, eventually, Nace. From time to time Nace, Moore & Flaherty would collect their energies & throw down live trio sessions which still resonate through the valley's ear(s). This trio CD is a session from late winter of early 2008 feat. 3 trks ("sex" & "drugs" & "lavender"), 1 short, 2 looong. A primo example of this threesome's focus & sonic storytelling - ferocious yet pensive.

Food For Animals
Belly
PS, UK For many, the current state of alt. Hip-hop has been, well, rather sad lately. It's heroes either burned out or gone astray. The ideology that filled so many notebooks with raps, now feels a bit mainstream; the music that moved so many young men with backpacks, now somehow stale. The labels that brought so much awesome music now, like so many, struggling to keep their heads above water. Some have said the movement is dead, but we know better. Hip-hop is something that can never die, and especially not now, when the world seems to be more screwed up than we thought it could be. So it comes as our extreme pleasure to offer to you today what we think will be one of the most groundbreaking debut full-lengths in recent memory. Food For Animals, straight outta Washington DC, this power trio (Vulture V, Ricky Rabbit, aided now by Hy on vocals) deliver their first full-length full of busted speaker beats, bizarre noise-soundscapes and slammin raps delivered with every bit of force like the hurricane they fly through. When Chuck D said, "bring the noise" he had no idea noise like this was possible. The music, a combination of raw digital noise, elephant size beats, samples of everything from jazz to top-40 twisted, distorted, and distorted again. It's loud as hell. It's the noise music people spoke of in the 30's. Belly is a statement. A manifesto. A record that screams- literally- and pushes the listener around, it's tough as hell, raucous, and actually might mean something in the long-term.

PS, US Liver! Lung! FR! is Frightened Rabbit at their very best - live. The intimate, mostly-acoustic set documented here was recorded in July 2008 in Glasgow and mixed by Mice Parade's Adam Pierce. Among other surprises, special guests pop up here and there: James Graham from The Twilight Sad contributes vocals to an incredible version of "Keep Yourself Warm," while Glasgow scene staple Ross Cook adds rollicking mandolin to "Old Old Fashioned." The stripped-down instrumentation brings singer Scott Hutchison's vocal delivery - now wrenching, now soaring - to the fore, showcasing the emotive lyrics and memorable melodies that have earned the band their passionate following.

Funckarma
Dubstoned vol. 2
PS, GERMANY More than just dubstep: Funckarma make this genre theirs and re-write its foundation anew with this barrier breaking record. Heavy but sharp, clear but dub-influenced, mid-tempo but infectious, the second volume of Funckarma's take on the dubstep genre is a new take at one of today's dominant genre by unequaled producers. Almost ten years have passed since Funckarma's first records on the Djak-UP Bitch label, but the Funcken brother haven't shown any sign of fatigue along the way. With records on Neo Ouija, N5md and Hymen (among others) and remarked side projects such as their albums with Shadow Huntaz on Skam or Cane and Quench, these two producers have shown that they had their ears right open to new sounds, styles and atmospheres. Ad Noiseam is proud to welcome these two virtuosos to the fold, for the second volume of their dubstep-oriented series (who started with a first volume on the Highpoint Lowlife label in the middle of 2008). "Dubstoned vol. 2" shows Funckarma appropriating the dubstep trend and mixing it with their science fiction sounding, bass-heavy electronic dub. Not an act to just follow a recipe or embrace a trend, Funckarma however turns dubstep into a moody, science-fiction sounding electronic monster, full of sharp edits, dynamic changes and insidious hip hop influences, the whole thing perfectly demonstrated by the "Nays Of Dight" opener. Escaping the dominant blend of dubstep but broadening the genre by adding to it the mixture of genres and sounds that has become typical of Funckarma, "Dubstoned vol. 2" is a heavy but fresh take at one of today's most commanding sound, and should be an ear opener for many.

Funckarma
Vell Vagranz
PS, US "Vell Vagranz" is Don and Roel Funcken's first full CD of original material under the Funckarma alias since 2006's "Bion Glent" (Sublight). This new album shows Funckarma at their most diverse by folding in other electronic music sub-genres into their already potent mix. Ambient, Drum and Bass, Dubstep, Hip Hop, Downtempo, and even some Post-Industrial motifs are all drawn into the Funckarma vortex to be reformed into the alien sonic shroud that embodies their trademark zig-zag suture stitched beats, frenetic basswork and lush emotional gauze. Plus with some help from Seaming, Kettle, Spyweirdos, Landau, and phinx find Funckarma at their most synergistic since 2001s "Solid State" (Dub). "Vell Vagranz" is proof that Funckarma are one of those rare and seasoned artists who can make any style sound like their own unique and personal creation even when trying something out of their creative character.

Giffoni, Carlos
Adult Life
PS, US This is shining and pure electronic music. Adult Life continues Carlos Giffoni's work in slow-building drones and prickly, trebly peaks, but he also imbues these new compositions with subtle structure and blind-siding rhythmic pulses which recall the many pioneers of electronic composition, among them Cluster, Brian Eno, Kraftwerk, and Tangerine Dream. The caustic melding of foreboding abstraction and lively pulse raises Adult Life to a paradigm of the breathing and the immaculate, a strange set of dichotomies finding a shocking common ground. Carlos Giffoni describes this as some of his most musical work to date, a pure electronic excursion into more grounded troupes which almost paradoxically work out completely new sonic concepts and ideas. Girl Talk
Feed The Animals
PS, US Pittsburgh artist Gregg Gillis (a.k.a. Girl Talk) has scrupulously created music from samples for over eight years. His fourth album on the Illegal Art label, Feed the Animals, continues his sonic evolution towards his party-infested live show and steps even closer towards a creation that is centered on pop musicality rather than attention-deficit sample splicing. Girl Talk has been known to underground audiences for several years, but it wasn't until 2006 that Gillis crossed over and caught the attention of a larger audience. With Rolling Stone, SPIN, Blender, Pitchfork, and even Beck including Night Ripper in their "best albums of 2006" lists, Girl Talk has gone on to be booked by major festivals (Coachella, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Virgin, All Points West, Pitchfork, DEMF, etc.), and solicited for remixes (Beck, Thrill Jockey, Tokyo Police Club, Grizzly Bear, Simian Mobile Disco, Peter Bjorn & John, TeddyBears, and Of Montreal). And with roughly 200 live shows over the last couple of years, Gillis has consistently played larger venues to capacity crowds (every date on his 2007 North American tour with Dan Deacon sold out). PRESS QUOTES: "One endlessly entertaining mega mash-up" - Rolling Stone "Gillis' craft is stunning and his tastes are exquisitely diverse" - Blender "A masterpiece that employs an estimated 300 samples" - SPIN "Massively recommended ... the voracious music fan's dream" --- Pitchfork "Media assassins Illegal Art come forth with yet another brilliant Girl Talk record." - XLR8R "Sounds like your favorite mash-up DJ after about 11 espressos" - Entertainment Weekly "Mashes together booty-shaking rap, iconic indie rock, and, uh, ABBA" - MTV.com.

Hit The Jackpot
Soul Money Gang Vibe
PS, AUSTRALIA Adelaide trio Hit The Jackpot play simple, noisy pop songs, swapping instruments and sharing vocals. They believe that enthusiasm and sincerity are more important than technical proficiency, and take inspiration from the likes of Beat Happening, Dinosaur Jr. and The Clean. It's appropriate, then, that they are releasing their new album Soul Money Gang Vibe through Chapter Music, the home of Australian DIY music for more than 15 years. The ten tracks on the album were recorded in the second half of 2007 at the band's own home studio. Cobbled together over the last few years, this studio has also been used by the likes of Kiosk, Birth Glow, Lindsey Lowhand and Batrider. Hit the Jackpot formed as a two-piece in early 2003, comprising young couple Jess Thomas and Kynan Lawlor. With a sparse but dynamic lineup of drums and guitar they played just a handful of shows before supporting Sonic Youth on their 2004 Australian tour. They released a self-titled EP around the same time, which ended up in the number three spot in Adelaide radio station 3D's Top 100 for 2004. Hit The Jackpot were joined by Sebastien Calabretto (and a bass guitar) in 2005 and released their debut album Clowns in 2006. With Seb leaving for the grey shores of England early in 2008, Hit the Jackpot have now recruited old friend Scott O'Hara (Lindsey Lowhand, True Radical Miracle), and are gearing up for a national tour in support of the new album. Aside from Sonic Youth, Hit the Jackpot have played alongside such international acts as Calvin Johnson, Les Savy Fav, J. Mascis, Dan Deacon and Pretty Girls Make Graves, as well as Australian artists such as My Disco, The Lucksmiths, Crayon Fields, Clue to Kalo, Oren Ambarchi, Wolf and Cub, Architecture in Helsinki and Love of Diagrams.

Pale Fatal Sister
PS, US Limited edition of 700 copies. Double LP pressing housed in a gatefold jacket. Being a Nabokovian and visceral garden of delights, a musical evocation of memory and desire spread over four sides of vinyl. Recorded at Black Dirt Studios, over an intensive three day period of hermetic isolation, whilst snow blanketed the surrounding fields, this work is both more detailed and conjures a heavier, more brooding occult atmosphere and sound, than any previous Hototogisu release.

HPC
Halfbreed
PS, GERMANY At a very young age, the Norwegian one-man project HPC started creating electronic music that ranged from danceable electronica and psych-trance to hard-/speed-/breakcore, ambient and noise. After some experimentation and development he felt the time for a first release was right and now 'halfbreed' has been realized. In his own words, HPC's aim is to build an aural exposure of his personal view of life by creating music beyond predictable schedules and clichés in electronic music. With this debut he has perfectly accomplished what he had in mind. HPC presents a fusion of heavy syncopated beats and pulsing low-end bass, balanced by synth textures and soundtrackish samples - inducing atmospheres that dwell between unbridled ecstasy and subliminal hypnosis. Tracks like 'machine' and 'run' are a fine example of the terrifying and liberating climax of rhythmic power's crescendo. Feel free to file 'halfbreed' between illbient, dubstep and darkest ambient that has accumulated hard tech aggressiveness. With this album HPC hit the target - and this is only the beginning...

International Jetsetters
Heart Is Black EP
PS, US "Honey-dipped 60's melodies drenched in oceanic swells of guitar noise..." - Oxford Bands, UK International Jetsetters is an Oxford based five piece. The band was formed in March 2007 by singer and guitarist Mark Crozer (The Jesus And Mary Chain) and bass player Bert Audubert. The line-up also features drummer Loz Colbert (The Jesus And Mary Chain, Ride), lead guitarist Paul Crozer, and vocalist Fi McFall. The Jetsetters have been best described by the British press (Nightshift Magazine) as "an amalgamation of everything that was great about indie rock, when that term actually meant something. From the narcotic fuzz of Spacemen 3 to the insistent jangle and drone of The Wedding Present, and lifted spaceward by singer Fi McFall's ethereal vocals, they're dark and dreamy but they rock like bastards." "Heart Is Black" is International Jetsetters debut six-song release. The EP blasts into the stratosphere with the full throttle, melodic guitar buzz, of "Inside Out" followed swiftly by the rhythm heavy groove of "Inside Yourself". "Never Slows Down" and "My Redemption" showcase Fi McFall's range as a singer. The low, breathy tones of the opening verses gradually ascend to pulsating choruses where she resonates like a siren. The title track "Heart is Black" strums and thumps with a dark atmospheric burn. The disc closes with a bit of a twist - A glaring early version of "Never Slows Down". International Jetsetters "Heart Is Black" CDEP hits quick and begs for repeated listens. It's a nice glimpse into what's in store from Oxford, UK's latest export.

Kemialliset Ystavat/Sunroof
Split Series #19
PS, US Kemialliset Ystävät (it translates as 'chemical friends') are a loose collective from Tampere in southern Finland. Existing in dialogue amongst (and beyond) the hugely creative, diverse microcosm of the Finnish scene including artists like Avarus, Lau Nau, Es, Paavoharju, Islaja, Anaksimandros, and labels like Fonal, 247 Laatijaa, and Lal Lal Lal, Kemialliset Ystävät has become an influential node on the outsider noise/folk/ psych underground, finding international acclaim. Almost entirely self-taught and using a bewildering array of instruments and approaches, their sonic arsenal includes detuned guitars, bass, traditional / vernacular instrumentation (mandolins, balalaikas, etc.) hand percussion, all manner of electronic instruments, effects, toys and circuit-bent items, treated samples and vinyl manipulation. Playfully taking their own unique and unpredictable path, they have layered and fused together traditional Finnish (at times almost medieval-sounding) instrumentation and melodies with avant-garde electronics, psychedelic folk/rock, noise, electro-acoustic, and percussive tribal rhythms, creating a sense of ritualistic magic and flexible, group-mind improvisation, with the whole often subjected to brutal and precise editing.

Lake
Oh, The Places We'll Go
PS, US "Oh, the places we'll go! Oh, we don't actually know!" The title track lyrics, with a nod to Dr. Seuss, have a wide-eyed, wondrous feeling, (and a hint of agnosticism) which finds itself popping up throughout the record. On their first K release, LAKE crafts up-beat, dance-able, psychedelic, uniquely sincere and unaffected pop songs, ranging from the jubilant, echoey, post-soul groove of Heaven to the sweet, polyrhythmic Green Arrows-inspired Bad Dream. Recorded at home, largely on cassette 8-track, this album, actually LAKE's third, has a slightly lo-fi, homemade feel as well showing evidence of their influence from prolific artists Karl Blau and R. Stevie Moore. Oh, the Places We'll Go represents a new direction for LAKE - more synthesizers, more up-beat, rhythmically-based songwriting - but it is also in keeping with their aesthetic, with contributing horn players and percussionists, male and female singers, group harmonies, sweet melodies and homespun production. LAKE's core membership is Ashley Eriksson, Eli Moore, Lindsay Schief, Andrew Dorsett, and Markly Morrison, a group of long-time friends based in Olympia, WA. The members of the band came from Washington, the Los Angeles area, and the Midwest but soon found themselves drawn together in the inspiring forests of the Pacific Northwest, and thus LAKE was born. Each is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist in their own right, and contributing melodies and complementing one another's strong points has become the process for LAKE's intimately nurtured songwriting.

Larvae
Loss Leader
PS, GERMANY A work in two acts, Larvae's third full-length album is a perfect snapshot of this band's tastes and talents. With a touching and poetic first part made of epic guitar melodies and drone atmospheres and a second act going back to Larvae's beatier and heavier "Monster Music" past, "Loss Leader" is at times poignant, at times playful. Another well thought step forward for the band (in two directions at once), and another impressive work for Larvae. Coming two years after "Dead Weight", so far the band's best known and most complete work, "Loss Leader" sees Larvae break the silence with something that is more than a regular album. Where "Dead Weight" was a commanding work of coherence in variations, melting many sounds and styles together, "Loss Leader" is clearly split in two very different parts. The first four tracks, forming the "Turning Around" EP are a testimony of this American band taste for long guitar tracks, highly emotional build-ups and delicate drumming. Maybe some of the rockiest Larvae material so far, these four melodic jewels take this act's sound where they had left us on the calmest tracks of "Dead Weight" (the fourth track, "Heavy" was actually part of the "Dead Weight" sessions), and dive forward in an instrumental world somewhere between post-rock and shoe-gaze, between drony backgrounds and fierce but introvert harmonies. Contrasting with this low-key beginning, the second half of the album, dubbed "Monster Music 2", is the direct sequel to Larvae's very first EP ("Monster Music", adn28, released in 2003). For if Larvae is clearly an act with a foot in the poetic side of rock, they are also cross-referencing electronic musicians at heart. Godzilla and his fiends are therefore back for a new round of sweeping basses and heavy beats. And still, where the first "Monster Music" was a down tempo heavy hitter (of the kind that would be called "dubstep" if it was released today). The sequel bows to Larvae's new-found calm, as shown for example in the closing "Oxygen Destroyer", which kicks off by pumping strong beats, before leaving room for wide and more humane tones. Larvae have come a long way since their beginnings, one could hardly think of a better snapshot of what this act is truly about than "Loss Leader": multi-talented, touching and intelligent.

Lineland
Logos For Love
PS, US For a split second the actuality of language stood only to bear witness and inspire the sonic structures of love being erected around me, and in this moment I believed in principle of purpose. Only when English was interjected did I sense the imposing future and separate out the soundscape of this melodic passing clan from the music streaming through the speakers. Logos for Love presenting a variety of acoustic instrumentation pressed into each other with modern blips and squiggles like a structure of so much brightly colored modeling clay with an illuminated jeweled interior, embracing the ancient rhythms and language over the impeding future. Malcolm Felder creates streamlined, discretely layered electronic music informed by a taste for left-field pop ranging from Bruce Haack to Bollywood, Hüsker Dü to George Jones. After moving to Queens in 1998, he began composing as Lineland, borrowing the name of a one-dimensional realm described in Flatland, the Victorian sci-fi novel by Edwin A. Abbott. Initial fourtrack Casio recordings grew into the album Pavilion (Audio Dregs 2003) over a three-year period, during which Felder expanded the material using music software on the home-built Dynavox 2000 computer and a growing array of vintage keyboards and novelty instruments. Songs have appeared on a few compilations and in several short independent films, including Back and Forthby James and Jeff Israel.

Loquat
Secrets of the Sea
PS, US Growing up on a lake in Minnesota, living near one in southern Germany and finally meeting her bandmates on a little peninsula called San Francisco, water has surrounded Loquat singer/guitarist Kylee Swenson her whole life. And during the two years of writing and recording Loquat's second full-length album, Secrets of the Sea, the organic-meets- electronic guitar pop quintet weathered many crests and troughs. Swenson and bass player Anthony Gordon got married. Family members passed on. The turmoil of creating music prevailed. Produced by the Rondo Brothers (Dan the Automator, Prince Paul, Bernie Worrell), the process of making Secrets of the Sea was a gravitational push and pull of emotion, from pain and frustration to happiness and solace. Recently finished with mixes by Talking House engineer Justin Lieberman (New Order, Blackalicious, The Matches), mastering by Bernie Grundman (Michael Jackson, Prince) and a remix by Zion-I's Amplive, Loquat can finally put its studio aggravations to rest.

M83
Digital Shades Vol. 1
PS, UK Digital Shades Vol. 1 is the precursor to the fourth album from M83, essentially the brainchild of Anthony Gonzalez, a resident of Antibes, France. Just after the Before the Dawn Heals Us US tour, Anthony decided to develop a musical direction already heard on some earlier M83 tracks and he started to write and record a collection of ambient works. Having long been a Krautrock and Eno fan this was a kind of music that Anthony has always been familiar with. Recorded primarily at his home studio with the assistance of Antoine Gaillet, who had previously worked on Before the Dawn Heals Us, Anthony was able to work without pressure, knowing he could work on the record at his own time and pace. The idea of digital, relevant during all the process (from creating the music to sharing it), gave him the idea to call the project Digital Shades Vol.1, and to make the album part of an ongoing series.

Confluence
PS, US Confluence is Danish producer Jonas Munk's third installment in his series of ambient albums, following the much loved The North Shore from 2003 and Bajamar from 2006. Unlike Munk's better known work, which centers around electronica and shoegazing aesthetics as well as a love of 1980s production techniques, these ambient works are completely without beats, or even time signatures, and are delicately constructed out of slowly evolving streams of guitar that has been processed into oblivion and back. But even compared to the standard set by the two aforementioned albums, Confluence is surprisingly dark and minimalist. These eight new compositions move slowly and seamlessly, like the ebb and flow of the changing tide, with subtle layering and filtering providing the essential means of movement.

Melodium
Cerebro Spin
PS, US Melodium speaks; there starts a romantically slow game of pong between the hemispheres of brain. The sound speeds. I listen, and there is harmony now between the players, and reluctance towards competition. They play on. Melodically Melodium speaks. Faster, onward towards the polyrhythmic rally! All praise repetitive motion, be stilling thus Zen. The tones of play fashion an energetic path, a melodic relation of right and left. Only when Melodium pauses for a breath do I remember moments can be filled with splitting silence; that I am here and this is somewhere other then the pong game of my mind. Keep speaking. Melodium is the moniker of Laurent Girard, a rather prolific electronic musician from Nantes, France with an obsession for melodies. Weaving bits of guitar, piano, synthesizer, flute or bits of voice and texture to create patterns in sound and small personal soundtracks that are at once somber, while retaining a feeling of sunny optimism. Golden waves of sound with rough-hewn edges that sound both dreamy and melancholic and simultaneously warm and shiny.

Norma 1 EP
PS, SWEDEN BACK IN STOCK, VERY LIMITED, NOW OR NEVER. 2007 CDEP features 4 *exclusive* songs (that do not appear on the new 2008 full-length CD) in handmade carton jackets, limited to 500 numbered copies. Highly recommended. Norma are very serious about ther music. Despite that they never get boring or theorizing. Their music is warm and welcoming. Norma is as much a band as a concept containing both visual and musical experiences. Their goal is to look outside the classical band format and try to broaden the cooperation with all sorts of creative minds. Their music is influenced by a lot of genres, ambient, kraut, noise, electronica, indie and the biggest influence is landscapes in all forms. Their ambition is to capture the minimalistic sound of just being three but also to challenge it and despite that sound grand. Playing live they try to give the audience much more than just a musical experience, using video, atmospheric sounds, theatrical elements and a balance between lightness and darkness.

EARDRUMS MUSIC: ""I was blown away when I first heard this track from the swedish trio Norma's debut ep, out on Novoton now. Their music is a mixture of ambient, kraut, noise, electronica, indie with a strict, repetitive bass/drum pattern and a magnificent, wide and almost hypnotic sound. This is rich, panoramic music with a warmth that I don't hear often from other bands trying to do something in this genre. I'm also amazed by the composition and the small details that suddenly surfaces and surprises. When the main song on the single is 8:33 minutes long, I guess those surprises are kind of necessary..."

Broken Hymns, Limbs & Skin
PS, US New York outfit O'Death's third LP, Broken Hymns, Limbs and Skin, feels like a giddy junkyard hoedown, from the panicked fiddle screeches of opener "Low Tide" to the celebratory gallop of closer "Lean-To." At times it sounds morose or contemplative, but underneath the melancholy is a gospel fervor-bashed from paint buckets, banjos, guitars and anything else in kicking distance-that defines their sound. Since 2007's buzzed-about Head Home, the quintet, which contains vocalist/guitarist Greg Jamie, vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Gabe Darling, fiddle player Bob Pycior, bassist Newman and drummer David Rogers-Berry, has evolved the possessed americana-meets-gypsy-punk of recent years into a more urgent, unrelenting celebration of life, death and everything in between. NEW YORK TIMES: "The starkness & spiritual purity of Appalachian folk, the noisemongering of punk & the rowdy theatricality of Tom Waits. With quiet pluckings of banjo & angry, anarchic hollers, its songs jumble the sacred & profane."

Parts & Labor
Receivers
PS, US Brooklyn noise-punk outfit Parts & Labor has dramatically altered their wall-of-sound: Their fourth album, Receivers, finds P&L focusing on open spaces, longer movements, expansive arrangements and loftier goals. On eight epic tracks, Receivers showcases the band's catchiest and darkest moods to date, reveling in a growing dynamic sensibility only hinted at in their previous work. Though they've maintained their love affair with glitchy oscillations and anthemic vocals, they are now utilizing the full possibilities of a band that was once a scrappy punk trio, and now a mature art-rock quartet. It's is a heady mix of psych, noise, and pop influenced by the arty minimalism of Wire, the surreal pop of early Eno, and even the spaced out psychedelia of Dark Side-era Pink Floyd.

Piano Magic
Dark Horses
PS, UK Their music has run the gauntlet between electronica, post-rock, baroque, modern classical and even glitch, though in recent years Piano Magic has settled on a unique, romantic, classic British alternative rock that echoes the most vibrant work of their prime inspirations. 'Dark Horses,' the latest in their now annual 4-track EP transmissions, nods, consciously or otherwise, to the likes of Joy Division, The Smiths and The Chameleons, whilst managing to sound indisputably like Piano Magic. These songs are built on pummeled drums, chainsaw guitars, cathedral reverbs, insistent bass and Glen Johnson's reliably Morrissey-esque observations on a life less sweet. 'Dark Horses' is Piano Magic's first record for the exceptional independent, Make Mine Music. The label is exclusively financed and maintained by its bands and therefore, the proceeds of each record sold go immediately back to those who made the music. Despite operating almost entirely beneath the radar in their native UK, since their first release back in 1996, Piano Magic have managed to successfully carve out a niche of their own that constantly defies expectation and sidesteps music industry convention. By never staying long on any one label, playing most of their concerts abroad and consistently redefining their sound, the band has not only survived against all odds but built up a solid, devout worldwide fan base. Their 12 long players and 18 other format releases have featured collaborations with Vasti Bunyan, Low, Tarwater, Hefner and Cornershop, amongst others. They've sound-tracked a film by Spanish director, Bigas Luna, signed on and off with the likes of 4AD, Darla, Morr Music, Important Records, toured in Russia, Poland, Turkey, Greece, Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Belgium and England. Even so, Piano Magic remains, unashamedly, a "cult phenomena," not destined for recognition until perhaps a decade after they finally call in the ghost. When not fronting Piano Magic, Glen Johnson operates as Textile Ranch - his new long-player, a collaboration with Victorian music machinist, Plinth - is out this month (also on Make Mine Music). Johnson's alternate project of electro-pop, under the name Future Conditional released a splendid album, 'We Don't Just Disappear,' on LTM last year.

Pit Er Pat
High Time
PS, US PIT ER PAT's recorded output has no easily definable style. It instead represents their evolution as modern musicians, whose affinity for pop & melody is filtered through their desire to have a truly singular voice. Modern Music if you will. Their musical focus remains firmly grounded in rhythm, while incorporating a strong sense of melody & harmony to dance above the complex rhythms & to stretch the layers to new heights. Here they employed a variety of new instruments incl. electric kalimba, horns, bobo balaphone, Burmese temple gongs, agogo bells, timbale, congas, bongos, bells, chimes, etc - more normally used in traditional & spiritual music. These tools helped the band escape into new experiments - be they mystical or introspective explorations of the terrible joy of existence. The gentle & driving grooves are irresistable as delicate layers reveal w/ every listen. CD comes in a deluxe old-style tip-on gatefold mini-LP jacket.

Plinth/Textile Ranch
The Rest, I Leave To The Poor
PS, UK A postal collaboration between Plinth (Mike Tanner) and Textile Ranch (Glen Johnson of Piano Magic). This 44 minute piece may structurally resemble a classical composition - divided as it is into several interlocking stanzas - but it's difficult to place it comfortably within the realm of modern music. If anything, 'The Rest....' evokes the otherworldly, fantastical obsessions of the Victorians (Conan Doyle, Lear, Grandville, Wellcome, etc) through means of meticulously manipulated instrumentation, samples and voice. Plinth, of course, is no stranger to Victoriana. In 2007, the Dorset based multi-instrumentalist and founder of the Dorset Paeans record label released, 'Plays Victorian Machine Music' - an EP made up entirely from sounds generated by antiquated parlor machines and music boxes.

PS, POLAND This album is about yearning. That aching emptiness that still exists when all rational processes have been exhausted. It's about the unobtainable, all consuming and immaterial. School of Seven Bells
Alpinisms
PS, US Alpinism is an electronically enhanced pop record of dizzying highs & claustrophobic lows, whose painstaking conception shows in its detail-laden crevices. On the album's best tracks-the polyrhythmic dream-pop of "Face to Face in High Places," the nervous shimmer of "My Cabal," the menacing lilt of "Iamundernodisguise"-Curtis constructs layers of shoegazing, moire-patterned guitars, while Alejandra & Claudia Deheza intertwine their near-identical voices like the fingers of praying hands. Throughout, the whole heavenly affair is tethered to the ground with a glitchy, tribal thwomp. Technology collides with cryptic religious imagery and good, old-fashioned rock music.

Secret History, The
Desolation Town EP
PS, US The Secret History was formed in 2007 by songwriter Michael Grace Jr, best known for acclaimed post-wave indie band 'My Favorite'. TSH is a collaboration with vocalist Lisa Ronson, daughter of Bowie guitarist, and glam rock legend Mick Ronson. The Secret History continues as a vehicle for Grace's myth and monster laden storytelling, which sprawls across a dreamlike landscape; part New York, part Italy, part Nowhere. The sound itself is a kind of continental art rock, combining the rainy jangles of mope, the stomp of glam, the innocence of the girl groups, and the anxiety of disco. Comparisons to Roxy Music, Eno, The Smiths and others begin to scratch the surface. The Desolation Town ep is the perfect introduction to a band committed to destroying rock n' roll from the inside and releasing its love-worn prisoners back into the streets...headphones on...never walking alone.

Red River
PS, US This is the 3rd full-length from Portland, Maine's MICAH BLUE SMALDONE after previous releases on North East Indie & Tequila Sunrise. Influenced by greats like Skip James, Leadbelly, Bob Dylan, Will Oldham, etc - a wonderful listen! About the album, Micah says ""This new one reaches a little further both into the past & into the future. It is simple faith in the goodness of people, the depth of love, & the infinite wisdom of nature, which allows for this path to be cut w/ patience, humility, & an eagerness to share. So let this album be a little way-mark, & never a hitching post."" He recently played on the new Jack Rose album & also plays in the group Fire on Fire (Young God Recs). CD version comes in a mini-LP style gatefold package w/ 8 pg booklet. Currently on tour supporting Death Vessel & also plays in the Death Vessel band. ""Even though the arrangements are more elaborate, the songs themselves have a primitive clarity. Lyrics are dark & rich w/ imagery... Lines can be violent, even lurid, yet even the most bloody verses have the plainspoken grace & essentialism of American folk art.""-DUSTED. RECOMMENDED!

Spacemen 3
DJ Tones
PS, UK Spacemen 3 have a limited edition (2000 copies) 5 track mini-album released by Space Age Recordings in cardboard sleeve wallet on October 20th which features 2 previously unreleased Spacemen 3 tracks, a radically different mix of the classic Spacemen 3 cover of the Red Krayola's 'Transparent Radiation' and appearing for the first time on CD, the ultra rare remix of 'I Love You' (originally only 50 promo white label vinyl copies were ever pressed). Rounding off this mini-album is a studio version of Ecstasy Symphony. Track listing: These Blues Transparent Radiation (violin mix) Modulated Tones I Love You (remix) Ecstasy Symphony Spacemen 3 consisted of the core duo of Jason Pierce (Spiritualized) and Sonic Boom a.k.a Peter Kember (Spectrum & E.A.R.) who formed the group in Rugby , Warwickshire, having met at art college. Other members of what would become a fluid lineup over the years included Pete Bain (Bassman, also of The Darkside), Natty Brooker, Sterling Roswell (Rosco), Will Carruthers, Jonny Mattock (Slipstream), and for the final few shows, Mark Refoy (also of Slipstream). From the outset Spacemen 3 had a very defined set of aesthetic principles. They based almost their entire sound on their own concept of minimalism - droning guitars, feedback, as few chords as possible, pounding drums - with their motto 'Taking drugs to make music to take drugs to'. Their minimalism bled into their stage show as well. Sitting down to play their guitars and covered in the spinning colours of a cheap psychedelic light show, their stage 'act' was very anti-performance. Another striking aspect of Spacemen 3 was their willingness to cover and share their influences. Song titles, lyrics and interviews were peppered with references to bands and artists they believed shared their 'minimal is maximal' aesthetic. The Velvet Underground, the Rolling Stones, the Stooges, the MC5, early Captain Beefheart, free jazz musician Sun Ra, the Silver Apples, 1960s garage punk such as the 13th Floor Elevators, Red Krayola, the Electric Prunes, the Beach Boys, Jan and Dean and other surf bands, 1980s rockabilly groups the Cramps, the Gun Club, Tav Falco, blues and gospel acts like Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, the Staple Singers and John Lee Hooker, and the production techniques of Joe Meek, Brian Wilson and Delia Derbyshire were just some of the names mentioned by the band.

Spectrum & Silver Apples
A Lake of Teardrops [re-issue]
PS, UK Pete Kember a.k.a. Sonic Boom of Spectrum worked with the seminal 60's act Silver Apples on a six track mini album originally released by Space Age Recordings in 1998. Having been out of print for many years now a limited re-pressing of 500 copies will be available from 20th October to meet demand for this release. From the opening surging waves of 'Streams Of Sorrow' with its controlled chaos and intoxicating vocals, through 'The Edge's' mesmerizing monotone backing to Simeon's 90's beat poetry - like Allen Ginsberg reincarnated into his most abstract nightmare, 'Whirlwind' with its plaintive vocals and warped ambience held together by a trademark Sonic Boom drone pattern, to '(I Don't Care if You) Never Come Back's' almost industrial-tribal percussion, fleshed out by those unique Silver Apples oscillations and Spectrum's ever present sense of wayward genius. 'A Lake Of Teardrops' is a spellbinding trip into the minds of two of the finest experimental composers ever.

PS, UK This is one amazing ride from a four-headed creative monster on heat that manages to blend musical beauty, torrential passion and sheer malevolence, sometimes in the space of one track...First sound on opening track Albion is Youth's unmistakable heaving bass before Big Paul Ferguson steams in with the heaviest drums in the business. Once the original Killing Joke rhythm section is underway on a crunching post-punk funk vamp, Simon Tong's guitar appears in shrapnel clusters lashed by Tim Bran's unearthly synth. Musical fireworks might be expected from a line-up like this and Sublimity, the second album by Transmission, doesn't disappoint. The pedigree is impeccable: Youth's production credentials, his time with Paul in the Joke before ahead-of-its-time super funk ensemble Brilliant. Simon's stint in the Verve line-up which made Urban Hymns then Gorillaz and Damon Albarn and Paul Simenon's The Good, The Bad & The Queen. Dreadzone co-founder Tim Bran plays with Subsonar and The Orb. The group started gestating after Youth and Simon became friends during the Urban Hymns sessions, which the former co-produced. Tim entered the fray then, Paul in Spring 2005 after he met Youth at a Malicious Damage party and heard some demos. Three months later they recorded debut album Beyond Light in three days at London's legendary Olympic studios.

Eccentric Soul: The Young Disciples
PS, US By 1967, East St. Louis, Illinois, once dubbed an "All American" city by the US Chamber Of Commerce, had become St. Louis, Missouri's evil twin. Unemployment, drug addiction & vicious gang activity put a dark & heavy lid on a bi-state area that once cooked-up world-changing talent by the likes of Chuck Berry, Josephine Baker & Miles Davis. But both cities still spawned heroes, and ALLEN MERRY was one of them. Already a living legend for his early work w/ Ray Charles & Ike Turner, Merry channeled his talent into teaching, forming the YOUNG DISCIPLES through the South End Community Center to keep kids off the streets, out of the gangs & into the studio, where young men & women spiraling downward could ride the spiral groove upward on Merry's own YODI, GATEWAY & MERRY labels. W/ nearly 80 local youths involved from both sides of the Mississippi, the YOUNG DISCIPLES (named after one of the area's most notorious gangs) encompassed solo acts, duos, male & female vocal groups, a massive horn section & a troupe of African dancers. Every sweat-drenched recording incl. here emerged from this grass-roots organization that changed, if not saved, lives. LP forthcoming

Wax Fang
La La Land
PS, US THE ONION A.V. CLUB: "What's going on in Kentucky? Judging by My Morning Jacket's new record and its hometown tourmate Wax Fang, it's like a flair for theatricality is being transmitted through the Louisville water. But while MMJ's turn to prog went for funky twists, it's immediately clear from the grandiose opening of Wax Fang's La La Land that frontman Scott Carney is fully intent on creating a Pink Floyd-esque prog-rock opera. From spacey, eerie psychedelia to whistling to references to World War II, the album conveys a vision as strongly as The Wall did, but with a less-polished, basement aesthetic that provides vivid moments of needed brightness. Spanning soaring whirls of energetic guitar pop ("The Doctor Will See You Now") and rolling, break-of-dawn mini-epics reminiscent of Arcade Fire (the closing "Wake Up Sleepyhead!"), La La Land is a fiercely focused collection with an impressive, bold ambition and artistic cohesiveness. It's a strong effort, but even if Carney's dream of resurrecting Roger Waters doesn't work out, Wax Fang could probably compose some incredible Off-Broadway rock musicals."

White Hinterland
Luniculaire
PS, US Luniculaire. It sounds French, but it is in fact a word invented byWhite Hinterland, taking parts of French words "lunaire" (lunar) and "funiculaire" (funicular, as in railway) to form the title of their second release. This EP is a highly ambitious recording containing five songs all sung in French, and it expands upon the wide palette of musical ideas heard onWhite Hinterland's debut, Phylactery Factory. Featuring two original songs, plus covers of songs made famous by Serge Gainsbourg, Brigitte Fontaine and Françoise Hardy,White Hinterland feels right at home amid the musical tradition laid out by these legends. From the opening groove of "Requiem Pour Un Con," it is obvious thatWhite Hinterland is exploring a plethora of musical ideas on Luniculaire. The funky rhythms and scorching guitar of the Gainsbourg classic captures the spirit of the original, but it's Casey Dienel's vocals that make this so special. Hearing Dienel sing in French is a revelation - without the distraction of English words you hear what a powerful instrument her voice is.White Hinterland's "Chant de Grillon" explores a wider range of sonic textures, many created by the layered guitar work of Alexis Gideon, while the spooky and atmospheric "Mon Ami La Rose" (originally made popular by Hardy) is subtle and beautiful. The original version of "J'ai 26 Ans" was performed by Brigitte Fontaine with the Art Ensemble of Chicago, and here Dienel plays the role of Fontaine while her band toys with flourishes of African rhythms and Eastern drones. Throughout Luniculaire, and especially on "J'ai 26 Ans" and "Requiem Pour Un Con,"Matt Meyer's percussion work is sublime - he layers an array of strange sounds and noises, while maintaining the heavy groove throughout. The EP's closer, "Lunirascible" has Dienel's voice at the center, and like Julie Tippetts, Elizabeth Fraser or contemporary ScottWalker, Dienel offers vocals meant not to deliver words, but simply tones, melody and texture. Like some groovy, strange and psychedelic artifact clamored about by crate-digging record collectors, Luniculaire is more than just an EP. It is a testament to White Hinterland's deep musical vision and a taste of the greatness to come.

Would-Be-Goods
Eventyr
PS, US Highly anticipated fifth album 'Eventyr' from revered London quartet Would-Be-Goods is released 20 years after the classic debut album 'The Camera Loves Me' on '80s cult label èl Records. It is their third album for Matinée Recordings, after the well received 'Brief Lives' (2002) and 'The Morning After' (2004). "Sad stories are more beautiful" sings Jessica Griffin on the opening track, and those words could be the motto for the album as most of its songs are inspired by folk tales-timeless archetypal stories composed in northern Europe in the 19th century. 'Eventyr', meaning 'adventures' or 'fairy tales', was the title of Hans Christian Andersen's classic collection of stories, and in songs such as 'Melusine' and 'Heart of Tin', the Would-Be-Goods show that tales of imagination can evoke the joys and sorrows of life more vividly than dreary realism. Some of the songs stay closer to home: 'In Bohemia', 'The Girl at No. 7' and 'The Ghost of Mr. Minton' depict the arty low life of mid-century London to magnificent effect. Musically, though, 'Eventyr' is not a folk album: the songs distill '50s and '60s styles into something entirely new, traveling through baroque pop, bossanova and rockabilly. The album was developed slowly over two years and sees Andy Warren-formerly of Adam and the Ants and The Monochrome Set and bass player on the first two Would-Be-Goods albums-return to join Debbie Green on drums and backing vocals, Peter Momtchiloff on lead guitar, and Jessica on lead vocals and guitar. Another classic album from a band that never goes out of style!

Wrangler/Scanner
1968 Moog Modular (Picture Disc)
PS, UK Limited to 300. Two Ra Chord blasts of 'Switched on Bach' beauty performed by WRANGLER and SCANNER who first met whilst fighting over a copy of 'Switched on Paddy Kingsland' at a record fair. These Supraphon pyjama wearing artisans have by loving of various knobs and switches, the sweet caressing of sequencers and event generators and manipulation of patch cords, created the sounds and rhythms for a discerning ear. Whilst Benge / Winters and Scanner have avoided the trap of being academic beard noodlers with this release, they have invoked the spirit of John Baker, White Noise and of course Bob Moog. Featuring sounds made exclusively on the Moog Modular System 3C and the Formant Modular Synthesiser this seven inch is a radiophonic joy, working as a platter to play out as well as a companion piece to their Twenty Systems meisterwork. Fans of Delia Derbyshire, Daphne Oram, Wendy Carlos, Brian Eno or the recent John Baker Tapes are recommended to check this.

Zeller
Audio Vandalism
PS, GERMANY Audio vandalism is the first release by the young artist JB Zeller who is based in Southern France. This release includes eleven tracks that were recorded between 2005 and 2008. Zeller is affected by 'all kinds of subversive music' (ranging from breakcore and industrial music to dubstep) in such a way that he is able to assimilate these different musical facets into his own style. Needless to say, the results are unique and subversive in their own right. Audio Vandalism is an aggregation of complex beat layers, deep dark bass, distorted synth textures, ominous samples and algid ambiences that are interwoven with atrabilious melody lines. Straightforward electro-industrial meet the complexness of breakbeats merged with whirls of noise, captured media coverage and a hint of melancholy. This album can be seen as a missing link between heavy, metric electronica, straight-line jungle-core and saturnine movie soundtracks. Join the Audio Vandalism!

Bee Gees, The
Best of Bee Gees [re-issue] (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 11TH)
PS, US Collects the Gibb Bros' pre-disco baroque-pop genius, originally release on LP in 1969. Could be the first time on CD? ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "If anyone needs conclusive proof that the brothers Gibb weren't always the chest-medallion-flashing kings of mainstream disco or, since about 1980 on, meaningless AOR washouts, the nearly 40-minute collection of the Bee Gees' earliest hits will suffice in spades. At their (perhaps, in hindsight) surprising best, the threesome, along with capable if generally unremarkable rhythm section members Melouney and Colin Peterson, created a slew of tender, affecting, and quite lovely hits. While the Stonesproto-metal crowd of the time probably thought them unbearably wimpy, their songwriting acumen, combined with their harmonies, fine production by Robert Stigwood, and ace orchestral/band arrangements by Bill Shephard, holds up astonishingly well... Considering that everyone from Catherine ("Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You") and Jimmy Somerville ("To Love Somebody") to Low ("I Started a Joke") and Jose Feliciano ("I've Gotta Get a Message to You") has covered something from this collection is testimony to the songs' continuing influence."

Bronnt Industries Kapital
Häxan (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 25TH)
PS, UK The world of horror soundtracks has long been an inspiration for Bronnt Industries Kapital, the musical project revolving around Bristol-based composer Guy Bartell, and it is no surprise that Bronnt should return the favor by delivering a horror soundtrack of its own. Häxan (1922, dir. Benjamin Christensen) is a fusion film using dramatization, documentary and animation to explore the themes of witchcraft and superstition. Met with outrage on its release, it has since been reappraised as a classic. Bronnt was commissioned to write a new soundtrack to accompany the film's first release on DVD in Europe (TVD3758) in 2007, and it is this soundtrack which forms the group's second album, the follow up to 2005's acclaimed Virtute et Industria. Much of Häxan was shot at night to enhance the sinister mood of the film, and Bronnt utilized a similar schedule to evoke the awe of the Sabbat. The soundtrack was composed and performed using a wide range of instrumentation, including clockwork devices, transistor organs, mellotron, clarinet, guitars, bespoke string instruments, pianos, tone generators, analog synthesizers and elaborate processing and manipulation through antique tape machines and plate reverbs. The resulting scope of the soundtrack is vast, ranging from minimalist clockwork lullabies to lush orchestral ensemble pieces, heavenly analog sound collages to hellish electrical miasmas, all imbued with a darkly hypnagogic ambiance worthy of Christensen's strange world populated by mechanical demons and castles in the clouds.

Burnes, Andrew
Telescope (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 4TH)
PS, US TABLE OF THE ELEMENTS happily presents the long-overdue solo debut of ANDREW BURNES. Burnes, along with DAVID DANIELL, is a founding member of the ethereal, post-blues ensemble San Agustin; he's also a member of Haunted House, alongside Loren Mazzacane Connors; and he's performed in improv settings with the likes of Ken Vandermark and Thurston Moore. Finally committed to vinyl, he doesn't disappoint: "Telescope" is a glittering chunk of sound, as Burnes transforms that particular emblem of Americana, the steel guitar, into one vast, slowly undulating drone. Andrew Burnes' name may not be familiar, but fans of the genre needn't worry. Back in 1993, Table of the Elements' original Guitar Series featured what was only the second US solo release from a similarly unknown artist: Jim O'Rourke. You can trust us again with this one.

Calder
Lower (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 25TH)
PS, UK Calder formed in Iceland when musical instrument maker Lárus Sigurðsson and Ólafur Josephsson, who is perhaps best known for his recordings under the alias Stafrænn Hákon, met and decided to join forces. Their first collaborations resulted in self-titled five-track album of improvised, experimental instrumentals that was released through Ólafur's Vogor Recordings and later picked up by UK indie Unlabel. Lárus' background is in classical music, having played with various Icelandic musicians and self-released a handful of solo recordings. His recent album Jarðhörpusálmar was improvised and recorded using musical instruments that he had designed and built himself. Ólafur Josephsson has been experimenting with ambient guitar arrangements under the name Stafrænn Hákon since 1999. He has released his music through various labels including his own Vogor Recordings, the Resonant Label and Awkward Silence Recordings, with the music progressing and becoming increasingly refined since his debut album Eignas Jeppa in 2001. After the creative success of Calder's debut, a second album was conceived in 2005 when Lárus and Ólafur started exchanging ideas, shaping and molding their music, with the material composed in a truly collaborative way - Lárus handed Ólafur acoustic melodic ideas and Ólafur added electronic elements, with tracks gradually acquired shape, depth and life. With this new music, melody, structure and beats have come more to the fore, although the beautiful and haunting guitar atmospherics are still evident, running like a thread through the album. 2008 saw the completion of this process and the resulting album has been entitled Lower. The music can perhaps best be described as a fusion of experimental, ambient, classical and acoustic music.

Castanets Vs. Ero
Dub Refuge (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 4TH)
PS, US "Dub Refuge" turns a minimalist folk record (CASTANETS' "City of Refuge") into a ghostly dub, subverting dub tradition while still nodding in the direction of King Tubby, Scientist, Burning Spear, and Sly and Robbie. "Dub Refuge" works because Castanets and ERO GRAY (aka Papa Alabaster, sometimes bass player for Castanets, and member of Brooklyn-based Rad Unicorn) are both preoccupied with ghostly, ephemeral and messy sounds. Ero and the Castanets share a haunted quality in their music, a unique dedication to risk, and a reverence for accident in folk music. (Stray string squeaks, cracking voices and odd echoes can be more rewarding than intentional harmonies or suavely competent riffs.) At it's best, Castanets music accomplishes an eerie and very difficult balancing act between the disaster-surfing of experimental and noise music, and the sort of calm competence shown by classic country singers. "The City of Refuge" sessions exemplified this balance, and here on "Dub Refuge", Ero has emphasized both aspects without destroying either.

Daniell, David
I-IV-V-I (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 4TH)
PS, US DAVID DANIELL is one of the hardest-working guitarists in avant-garde show business. He leads the troops in Rhys Chatham's guitar armies; he was a member of Jonathan Kane's rollicking band February; and he performs regularly in a duo with Tortoise's Doug McCombs. He's collaborated with Tim Barnes, Thurston Moore, and Loren Connors; and his guitar work with his own band, San Agustin, is the stuff of which fleeting blues-drone dreams are made. With influences rooted in blues, American minimalism, and post-punk ideologies, Daniell's guitar playing is always inspired; when fused with his intricate electro-acoustic compositions, the results are breathtaking.

Danielson
Trying Hartz (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 4TH)
PS, US "Trying Hartz" samples the first decade of the DANIELSON/DANIELSON FAMILE/ BR. DANIELSON oeuvre (all the years before "Ships"), attesting generously to the movement of the work as a whole, from proto-minimalist eccentric gospel band to prog-metal-dread outfit to music hall choir to indie rock one-man band to outsider art celebrity to family man and family member. It's a perfect starter volume for listeners who have not had the pleasure of engaging with the evolution of this unusual, surprising, and incredibly moving musical consortium. And yet: please note that no verbal account of the work can possibly summon the effect of the decade digested in this assemblage. After all, as Daniel sings, "My Lord is known by His song." Not by His press releases. The ecstatic vision of the Danielson project is the unnamable part, the impossible to describe part, and this ecstatic vision is cumulative. It's not what Daniel says, though he always says it well, it's the circumstances in which he says it, with family gathered around him, whether related by blood or not; it's the reiteration of the spiritual thematic material, a reiteration that sounds nothing like early 20th century gospel-it's far more poeticized, it's far more elemental-but which has all the seriousness and all the joy of that long ago music. Ecstatic vision. You won't get it by reading these lines, nor even by reading the lyrics. You will get it by listening to this distillation of ten years' work and the earlier albums and going to the shows. Then you will experience the humble but devious and complicated grassroots movement that is Danielson. "Trying Hartz" is an essential place to start.

Deer Tick
War Elephant (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 11TH)
PS, US New album from intriguing solo-acoustic troubadour dude. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "John McCauley, aka Deer Tick, has been on a non-stop tour since graduating from high school in 2004. He often performs without amplification, delivering tunes with just his voice and guitar, an experience that gives his vocals the primal power of a turn of the (last) century mountain balladeer. McCauley's a singer/songwriter with finely crafted literary lyrics married to folkie melodies that sport influences from rock, blues, country, and pop, as evidenced by his cover of Anthony Newley's "What Kind of Fool Am I?." McCauley transforms the tune into a country waltz, straining to reach the high notes, replacing Newley's measured regret with desperation and agony, although the mood is broken by a goofy, loping instrumental bridge just before the last two verses. The rest of the album, originals penned by McCauley, is more straightforward -- tunes about lost love, loneliness, and heartache delivered simply, highlighting McCauley's emotionally charged, unadorned vocals."

White Light Strobing (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 4TH)
PS, US "White Light Strobing" is the debut album of the band DESOLATION WILDERNESS. Recorded in the winter of 2008, supposedly the dark months but there is a beauty hidden there, too. Sound waves transmuted through archaic vacuum tubes and dusty transistors, magnetized on to a playable medium. A rush of air pressure, a few more charged ions here and there. Somehow, out of chaos comes order, a record of an event at a specific time and place. "White Light Strobing", Strobing, like what movies do, or sunlight, or even sound: More than meets the eye. "White Light Strobing" contains songs straight from the wide-awake dream world about simple things (love, escape, the open road) which transform before your ears into something else entirely. Similar to the experience of being inside all day and then walking outside to find yourself blinded by the light of the sun, blinking in a daze. What just happened? More than meets the eye. The meanings of words are transcended by their texture, what they rest upon. Lingual poetry as visual poetry as aural poetry; sung in any language, it is understood.

Envy/Thursday
Split LP (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 4TH) (LP + CD)
PS, US More than two years after THURSDAY first put the idea in our heads, TEMPORARY RESIDENCE LTD. is proud to finally bring together two influential bands from two very different places. Recorded in Spring 2008, both bands turn in some of their most inspired work yet. In addition, Thursday invited Anthony Molina of Mercury Rev to remix the dark instrumental "In Silence" into the pitch-black closing track, "Appeared And Was Gone," providing the perfect transition into the massive dynamics of ENVY. Beginning with the subtle electronics of the symphonic opener, "An Umbrella Fallen Into Fiction," Envy thrashes and burns through a trio of thoughtful face-melters. Pressed on audiophile-quality 180 gram vinyl and featuring original artwork by acclaimed poster artist, Dan Grzeca, this deluxe set includes a free copy of the CD format beautifully incorporated into the exquisite package design.

Hyvonen, Frida
Silence Is Wild (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 4TH)
PS, US Having come out of a year of isolation, Frida Hyvönen paired up once again with Swedish producer Jari Haapalainen in Stockholm's famous Atlantis studio and made her second full-length Silence Is Wild. Whereas Hyvönen's 2006 debut Until Death Comes was lean and percussive with her distinctive oompah-styled piano and direct lyrics, Silence Is Wild stretches her voice across lush arrangements of piano, strings, choirs, and synths. Piano-based antecedents and contemporaries such as Carole King, Jerry Lee Lewis, Plush, and Antony and the Johnsons generally feel like appropriate touchstones for discussing the Swedish singer-songwriter's recorded work. Lyrically, however, Hyvönen is in more open waters, as she forges her own stylistic path as a songwriter. On Silence is Wild, Hyvönen continues to take an utterly modern approach to classic songwriting forms: blending the confessional with the fictional; mixing wit with a sexuality that shifts from the refined to the raw; all the while using language which dances effortlessly between the timeless and the contemporary, referencing high art and pop culture in a transcendent manner which masterfully puts Hyvönen at the top of a new international class of singer-songwriters.

Judys, The
Land Of Plenty [re-issue] (DELAYED, PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 2008)
PS, US First ever official release for The Judys last album, recorded but never released! In 1990, The Judy's set out to record a new album with a new Judy's sound. Featuring the lineup that had been established over a number of years the band, including Barbara Donaho (keyboards/guitars), Lee Malone (bass), and Darwin Keys (drums), set out to explore new horizons musically and thematically. Land of Plenty injected multi-layered keyboards and guitars, stacked vocals, a gospel choir, and even a bit of banjo into the band's palatte and sought to realize Bean's vision of a new Americana musical landscape. Broad in its scope and daring in its expansion of the band's definition of itself, Land of Plenty was shelved when the group disbanded before the CD's release. While a handful of copies have been given out, this is first time this long sought-after project has been available to the general public.

Judys, The
Moo [re-issue] (DELAYED, PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE 2008)
PS, US The original 'Moo' album finally re-issued on CD for the first time! CD sports seven bonus tracks, mainman David Bean's "Modomusic" EP. Released almost four years to the day after Washarama and following an eighteen month hiatus, The Judy's Moo album has a slightly more progressive sound: richer production values, fuller arrangements and thicker harmonies. As the band returned to the stage in 1985, this was the album that showed the band's maturity and development as songwriters and musicians. The twelve songs on Moo, laced with solid-state irony, well-placed cynicism and standard issue Judys' wit, show the band at the peak of their creativity and acted as a springboard for their live extravaganzas. The album was released with The Moo Tour - a month of live performances across the state which included giant cereal boxes, moving conveyer belts of milk cartons, and a dancing cow while the band donned milkman uniforms. Critically acclaimed and fan-revered, The Moo Album continues to be a milestone in Texas pop music.

K-The-I???
Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 4TH)
PS, US K-THE-I??? marks a thunderous return to MUSH with his latest full-length, "Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow". Production on the album is handled entirely by THAVIUS BECK, his first project since he finished work on Saul Willaims' "Niggy Tardust" alongside Trent Reznor. Where his debut, "Broken Love Letter", focused on past loves gone wrong, "Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow" is a collection of songs about the MC's cross country relocation, and trying to come to terms with how his life has changed from that. The result is a work of singular focus that catches K-The-I??? at his strongest, dropping ingenious lyrics over Blade Runner beats. The album features a stellar line-up of guest MCs as High Priest of a newly reunited Antipop Consortium, Busdriver, Subtitle, Scribble Jam winner Nocando, Vyle, and Mestizo all drop in. Thavius Beck even leaves the producer's desk and steps in front of the mic for a track. For fans looking for an album that ties hip-hop's past, present and future, K-The-I???'s Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow delivers.

Legends, The
Seconds Away (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 4TH)
PS, US After two years of absence The Legends return with the noisiest pop single to ever come out of Sweden. "Seconds away" balances perfectly between the unbearable and pure loveliness. "I need noise now, so this new single sounds like someone drilling a whole in your head. In a pleasant way that is. It's called "Seconds away" and is about the wonders of Tryptizol. The B-side, "Over and over" is actually one of those sad love songs I had promised myself never to write again. But it was out of my hands; life forced me to write it. Sorry about that... Pallers has done a truly wonderful remix of it. It might actually beat the original, which is both a very good thing and slightly depressing at the same time." Johan [aka The Legends]. The one-man band The Legends has confused, and annoyed, it's surroundings with a total lack of will to compromise and sudden changes in musical direction since 2003. Right now Johan is in the famous Summersound studios together with a large number of distortion pedals and broken amplifiers to record a fourth The Legends album. The Legends made their debut with the critically acclaimed album "Up against the Legends" in the fall of 2003. Live the band was somewhere between 8-10 people of which two had a slight idea about how to play their instrument and none was close to sober. -" I wanted to make pop melodies so simple and obvious that they could get to the audience no matter how the songs were played. This time the audience will, hopefully, rather fight to hear the melodies through a wall of feedback".

Library Tapes
A Summer Beneath the Trees (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 25TH)
PS, US Library Tapes follow up the highly acclaimed Make Mine Music album Höstluft with the beautiful and atmospheric long player A Summer Beneath the Trees. A Summer Beneath the Trees steps away from the minimal sound of previous Library Tapes releases, with rich layers of sound and more varied instrumentation, and strings taking a more prominent role. Joining Library Tapes main man David Wenngren (piano, laptop and field recordings) are Peter Broderick (Bella Union, Type, Kning Disk) who adds violin, guitar, accordion, trumpet, celeste, viola and banjo on the six of the album's nine tracks, and Danny Norbury (Static Caravan, Ono) who plays cello on three tracks. The trademark ageing clicks and glitches of earlier releases are largely absent, and there is a newfound warmth and depth to these recordings. The album moves Library Tapes further into the realm of modern classical and cinematic soundtracks, with the music bringing to mind Arvo Pärt, Michael Nyman and Max Richter. Based in Gothenburg in Sweden, David Wenngren has also released music under the name Forestflies and has extensively toured UK, Europe and USA, playing live with the likes of Sylvain Chauveau, Greg Haines and Akira Rabelais.

Lorna
Writing Down Things To Say (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 11TH)
PS, US Signposts: Mojave 3, American Analog Set, Coastal, The Blue Nile. WORDS ON MUSIC is proud to present WRITING DOWN THINGS TO SAY, the third album by Nottingham, England's orchestral pop songsmiths LORNA. The quartet follow up their highly acclaimed 2005 record STATIC PATTERNS AND SOUVENIRS with another rare work that eschews convenient classification - embracing an expansive sonic palette without sounding eclectic (in no small part due to the dozens of instruments the band is able to skillfully perform and weave into the record's nine compositions). LORNA tours folk, old-time country, chamber pop, post-rock, and even avant-lounge on WRITNG DOWN THINGS TO SAY. But the genius of LORNA lies in the masterful (husband and wife) songwriting team of Mark Rolfe and Sharon Cohen-Rolfe. The duo have created an album unified in theme and texture by seamlessly cross-pollinating their songs with traces of all these musical genres - deftly bringing pedal steel, string quartets, harmonicas, vintage keyboards, and woodwind and brass arrangements into the fold - not to mention their sumptuous vocal harmonies. "Not In My Lighthouse" bustles with a warm bed of keyboards, on top of which Rolfe's gentle vocals casually flirt with alternating clarinet and flute melodies. This patient courtship builds to yield a wistfulness and exquisiteness once realized by Scotland's romantic perfectionists THE BLUE NILE. On "Think (Let Tomorrow Bee)" Sharon Cohen-Rolfe's voice is undressed to its poignant core - sheltered only by occasional strings and sparse acoustic guitar. The song is a stark interpretation of the 1993 SEBADOH composition - much in the way Ivo's THIS MORTAL COIL project breathed a fresh new atmosphere into the music of TIM BUCKLEY and ROY HARPER. "(I Wish I Knew) How to Build a House" employs a 7/8 meter to daringly bridge the intersection of post-rock and avant-lounge - perhaps having a conversation with AMERICAN ANALOG SET and STEREOLAB along the way. WRITING DOWN THINGS TO SAY is a record that rewards multiple listens, as the sundry instruments that are subtly and cleverly woven into the rich fabric of LORNA's songwriting surface and bloom.

Lucksmiths, The
First Frost (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 4TH)
PS, US Over the course of fifteen years and almost as many albums and international tours, Australian band The Lucksmiths have penned some of the most adored songs this side of the pop underground and have built up a massive fanbase of both Europeans and ex-pats in the process. Their last album Warmer Corners, received much praise (Pitchfork : idiosyncratic but accessible, literate but unpretentious, gentle but not weak, sincere not so much in presentation as in presence) Loud & Quiet named it their 2nd favourite album of the year, Two singles lifted from the album A Hiccup in Your Happiness and The Chapter in Your Life Entitled San Francisco both received heavy rotation on the nations broadcasters, the latter also finding its way onto Qantas in-flight playlist for March 2006 an achievement not celebrated lightly by a band with an enduring penchant for the somewhat ridiculous and irrelevant. A trip to Tasmania has yielded First Frost Their finest and most eclectic album to date. Camped out in the wilderness, the band was free to explore and expand the musical palette, and with all 4 members contributing songs, the end result is a 14-song offering bound to surprise anyone who thought they had The Lucksmiths pegged as sounding too much like The Lucksmiths

Machine Fabriek & Stephen Vitiello
Box Music (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 10TH)
PS, US Rutger and Stephen sort of accidentally met through e-mail. A simple note regarding an ordering question for a CD led to an enthusiastic e-mail conversation and climaxed in a musical collaboration. This all happened in a very short period, both musicians being very inspired by the concept of "exchange," as a means to cross space and time -- Rutger living in the Netherlands and Stephen in Virginia. Most of the time, when (electronic) musicians work together it's a matter of swapping digital files. In this case they decided to do something different and sent each other a box full of (mostly non-musical, or musically non-functional) objects and recordings, with the "assignment" to make music with those objects and all as source materials. As the titles tell, we're talking about an egg cutter, thumb piano, a broken kraakle box, rice, chocolate sprinkles, old cassette tapes, a broken 7" record, etcetera, etcetera. Both musicians made two of their own solo tracks with the box they received, and the last track was done together by Rutger adding sounds and processing to a piece started by Stephen. For Rutger/ Machinefabriek this is part of his most delicate work. For Stephen, it was a new and extremely enjoyable form of long-distance collaboration. Magnificents
Year Of Explorers (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE DECEMBER 9TH)
PS, US The latest release from this Scottish band is an epic saga of stolen synths, left-handed guitars, trans-European expressways, covert product placement, and serious studio tomfoolery. Where their eponymous debut was primarily fueled by raw punk power and electrifying excess, this record demonstrates a more measured method. They've toured with the Beta Band, Mogwai, Stereolab, and Trans Am.

Mahjongg
Free Groove Rider (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 4TH)
PS, US Stylistically, MAHJONGG is boundless and indefinable. From their very first EP through K's "Kontpab" (released earlier this year), Mahjongg have dabbled in beatbox punk, afro-beat revivalism and junkyard whimsy. The continual shifts in their albums is an earnest attempt to realize global harmonies, but if given only one side of a 7" which side of Mahjongg would come out to play? The Dub Narcotic Disco Plate series provides the answer and "Free Groove Rider" is their most refracted pop statement yet. Using a swirling vocoder and intermittent dance beats, this single flickers like a channel-surfer finding pop sensibilities in between the static. The B-side, a remix by Selector Dub Narcotic (Calvin Johnson), ups the playfulness by reducing the static in favor of an unkempt, bubbling mix of melodica and reemerging synths.

Minotaur Shock
Amateur Dramatics (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 18TH)
PS, US Audio Dregs is pleased to announce the release of a longtime favorite from Bristol UK, Minotaur Shock; the musical side of David Edwards. There are currently 3 albums by him available, a compilation of old hits and some EPs out there, but this is his first stateside release now available on Compact Disc! How cool is that? "I'd describe Amateur Dramatics as school band meets Italo meets chamber music rubbing up on electro with a slice of acid, a sprinkling of minimalism and a short attention span. It's got saxophones, violins, clarinets and the insides of my grandma's mini-piano on it. It was influenced by many things, notably Fleetwood Mac, Detroit techno, Frank Zappa, Cluster, Andrew Poppy, Bowie, Italo house, Glass/Reich, Gentle Giant and Todd Rundgren. It was all written, arranged, recorded and produced by me mostly at home (occasionally in other people's houses). All instruments were done by me except clarinet, flute and saxophone which were played by the wonderful Emily Wakefield, and violin which was played by the excellent James Underwood of the Iskra String Quartet. Anna-Lynne Williams of Lotte Kestner provided vocals for 'This Plane Is Going To Fall'." -David Edwards, June 2008

Nerves, The
One Way Ticket (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 11TH)
PS, US "Their bare, skeletal sound made every lick seem memorable. They excelled in energy.
People compared them to the early Beatles or the Dave Clark Five." - Kenneth Funsten.
Formed in 1975 by guitarist JACK LEE, bassist PETER CASE, and drummer PAUL COLLINS, the Nerves are one of the most influential garage/punk pop outfits to come out of the mid-70's LA scene, and certainly one of the least documented... until now. Mostly remembered for their classic "Hanging On The Telephone," a Jack Lee composition which has been covered over the years by a myriad of artists from BLONDIE to L7 to CAT POWER, the Nerves were above all a high energy rock'n'roll band with all three members composing and singing. Playing fast, ear-catching garage pop songs, sometimes wearing matching suits, the trio had more than a bit of the stripped down street energy of the Los Angeles's early punk movement. They shared the stage with the Ramones and Mink Deville during their infamous US "Magical Blistering Tour," played the Punk Palace and the legendary Masque in Hollywood, and headlined shows with the Avengers, the Zeros, The Dils, The Screamers and Shock, to name just a few. After the band's break-up in 1978, Peter Case and Paul Collins formed The BREAKAWAYS, and later went on to front the legendary PLIMSOULS and The BEAT, respectively. Following the success of "Hanging On the Telephone," JACK LEE has mostly focused on his songwriting career, releasing an album in 1981. Both Peter and Paul are still recording and touring. PETER CASE's latest album "Let Us Now Praise Sleepy John" (Yeproc 2007) was nominated for a Grammy. This collection, authorized for the first time ever by the three band members, features the band's 1976 EP (now regarded as a power pop classic), as well as demos and previously unreleased live recordings, REMASTERED and complete with notes and photos. The CD is a Digipack. Track listing : 1. One Way Ticket 2. Paper Dolls 3. Hanging On The Telephone 4. When You Find Out 5. Working Too Hard 6. Give Me Some Time 7. Walking Out On Love (Breakaways) 8. Thing Of The Past (Plimsouls) 9. It's Hot Outside (Jack Lee) 10. Many Roads To Follow (demo) 11. Are You Famous? (live) 12. Why Am I Lonely? (live) 13. You Won't Be Happy (live) 14. Any Day Now (live) 15. Letter To G. (live) 16. Come Back And Stay (live) 17. I Need Your Love (live) 18. Stand Back and Take a Good Look (demo) 19. Are You Famous (demo - CD only) 20. Letter To G. New Order
Movement [expanded re-issue] (ON SALE / PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 11TH)
PS, US Digitally remastered and expanded two CD edition of this 1981 album, includes 10 non-album singles, B-sides and remixes, including their debut singles/EP. After the tragic suicide of Joy Division's Ian Curtis, the band restructured. Guitarist Bernard Sumner, whose gift for combining the melodic with the hypnotic had been the band's cornerstone, stepped up to the microphone. The resulting debut MOVEMENT finds the group taking a brave step away from its unfortunate past. Preserved are Joy Division's dark edges--Sumner's guitar attack swerves deftly between funereal repetition and noisy bursts, while bassist Peter Hook continues to explore his instrument's upper registers. From the slow, deliberate build and melodic interplay of its opening moment, the mid-tempo "Dreams never End", MOVEMENT boldly states the band's more experimental, slightly less emotionally turgid agenda. That Sumner is trapped under the influence of Curtis is undeniable--at times, the resemblance is alarming, but MOVEMENT is the sound of Sumner finding his voice. The spacey synth-pop of "The Him" foreshadows the sound New Order was to slowly develop, as Sumner became more comfortable with the upper reaches of his vocal range. Dynamic play abounds--the existentialist drone of "Truth" gives way to a crushing, chaotic guitar wail, while the intense, revealingly named "Doubts Even Here" slowly erupts beneath a disturbing double-vocal, stressing the burgeoning diversity of this legendary band in the making.

Also similarly re-issued: Power Corruption & Lies, Low-Life, Brotherhood and Technique.

New Order
Brotherhood [expanded re-issue] (ON SALE / PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 11TH)
PS, US Digitally remastered and expanded two CD edition of this 1986 album, includes eight non-album singles, B-sides and remixes. BROTHERHOOD is a document of growth for New Order's ever-expanding sonic landscape. Packaged in the stark, utilitarian style that was the Factory label's trademark, the album belies its minimalist presentation with a sprawling, intricately crafted collection of pop gems, inspiringly diverse, yet uniformly infused with the band's trademark sincerity and off-kilter melodic sense. The album opens with the deceptively straight drum hits of "Paradise", which quickly adopts an intense double-tracked vocal and with it, an air of danger that offsets its soaring melody. New Order developed into masters of intellectually stimulating dance music, an elusive combination of qualities. The album's biggest hit "Bizarre Love Triangle" exemplifies this rare mixture--atop a throbbing, heavily sequenced dance beat is played out a drama complete with consistently engaging musical shifts, dramatic lyrical turns, and a chorus that's instantly memorable and nothing short of gorgeous. The wistful vulnerability of "All Day Long" dissolves into a sprawling, regal affair and the supremely sweet "Every Little Counts" show yet another dimension to New Order's sonic richness.

New Order
Low Life [expanded re-issue] (ON SALE / PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 11TH)
PS, US Digitally remastered and expanded two CD edition of this 1985 album, includes eight non-album singles, B-sides and remixes. With LOW-LIFE, New Order truly hit their stride with their highly individual combination of infectious rhythms, inventive composition and performances full of conviction. The vulnerable lyrics and earnest delivery of Bernard Sumner are in top form; his voice is at last a completely developed instrument, clear and comfortable as it wraps itself around such memorable tracks as the opening "Love Vigilantes", a solid, purely guitar-driven narrative. Following immediately and in sharp contrast is LOW LIFE's biggest success, "The Perfect Kiss", a sequencer-fueled dance classic which boasts what is undoubtedly pop music's only frog sample solo. "Sunrise" has an epic feel, filled with driving leads and Sumner's signature scratchy, frenetic rhythm playing. The album takes a serene turn on "Elegia", a beautiful, airy composition of echoey guitar lines and swirling synth textures.

Power, Corruption & Lies [expanded re-issue] (ON SALE / PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 11TH)
PS, US Digitally remastered and expanded two CD edition of this 1983 album, includes eight non-album singles, B-sides and remixes. New Order found its voice on the group's sophomore effort, POWER, CORRUPTION & LIES (1983). Featuring the original eight songs on the British release, the first disc offers exceptional dance-pop with "Your Silent Face" and "Age Of Consent." The bonus disc includes "Blue Monday" and its b-side "The Beach," which were released exclusively as a single in the U.K., but included on the U.S. version of Power, Corruption & Lies. Book of Norma (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 4TH)
PS, US Swedish shoegaze/dreamrock duo Norma's new album is available 11/4. Those of you who snapped up their incredible debut EP (available again, very limited stock) understand what's at stake here. Norma's music is a mixture of ambient, kraut, noise, electronica, indie often with a strict, repetitive bass/drum pattern and a magnificent, wide and almost hypnotic sound. This is rich, panoramic music with a warmth that you don't hear often from other bands trying to do something in this genre. German kraut is one obvious thing, but also the spacerock of Spiritualized and Spacemen3 comes to mind. Modern references may be Silverbullit, 120 Days, Serena Maneesh and the Lionheart Brothers.

Northern Valentine
The Distance Brings Us Closer (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 4TH)
PS, US Northern Valentine is built around husband & wife team Robert (guitar) & Amy Brown (violin & keyboards). They have been recording since 1997 & have six limited release albums to their credit in numerous incarnations with various additional musicians. On The Distance Brings Us Closer Robert & Amy are joined by Jeffrey Bumiller (of Doctor Scientist & Lunch with Beardo) on guitar, Marc Carazo on bass guitar, & Ben Fleury- Steiner (of Light of Shipwreck & owner of Gears of Sand Records) on guitar. The recordings on the Distance Brings Us Closer were live in their studio using a stereo field recorder without post-production or overdubbing, just the band members improvising off of each other on planned themes. The result is a very live & blended spacious sound rather than the sterility & separation that can often be found on a multi-tracked album version of a live improvisational drone band.

Parks, Cale
Sparklace (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 4TH)
PS, US A little over a year since the release of Aloha and White Williams drummer Cale Parks' solo debut album Illuminated Manuscript comes Sparklace. There is a stark contrast between the two albums. Sparklace stands as a more immediate album than its predecessor focusing on songs with a pop structure whereas Parks' previous output was more ambient and minimalisitc. Recorded in his home, every sound is original. If there is a drum sample, it is from Parks' drum set. The vibraphone is sampled as well. To say Parks has found his voice, is to miss the point. Rather, the sound of Sparklace is singular and electronic with born digital sounds. There is no wasted space, not a snare out of place. Listen carefully as it settles in, fragile but not without momentum.

Plagenhoef, Scott and Ryan Schreiber
The Pitchfork 500: Our Guide to the Greatest Songs from Punk to the Present (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 11TH)
PS, US In The Pitchfork 500: Our Guide to the Greatest Songs from Punk to the Present, by Scott Plagenhoef and Ryan Schreiber. Pitchfork offers up their take on the 500 best songs of the past three decades. Focusing on indie rock (Arcade Fire, The Shins), hip hop (Public Enemy, Jay-Z), electronic (Daft Punk, Boards of Canada), pop (Madonna, Justin Timberlake), metal (Metallica, Boris), and experimental underground music (Suicide, Boredoms), it features all-new essays and reviews written with the sharp wit and insight for which the site is known. Kicking it off in 1977 with the birth of punk and independent music, The Pitchfork 500 runs chronologically, with each chapter representing a distinct period and offering a narrative of how the musical landscape of the day influenced its artists. The book opens with David Bowie, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Kraftwerk, and Brian Eno, the "art-rock godfathers" who set the tone and tenor for the next thirty years, and wraps up in the present, when bands connect with new audiences through social networking sites and prime-time TV placements -- and when a single mp3 can turn a niche indie artist into a global sensation. Sidebars like "Yacht Rock," "Runaway Trainwrecks," "Nanofads," and "Career Killers" call out some far-from-classic musical trends and identify the guiltiest offenders. Softcover, 224 pages.

Pop Levi
Never Never Love (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 26TH)
PS, US 2008 sophomore album from this Pop (no pun intended) singer/songwriter and former Ladytron member, probably the only contemporary musician in the world beloved of both Jarvis Cocker and Noel Gallagher. Recorded entirely in Hollywood at Quincy Jones' old studio, Westlake, where both Thriller & Off The Wall were laid down, Mr. Levi has returned with an album about the madness of love - 100% autobiographical, 100% clever, 100% dumb, 100% unique. And that's giving 400% already. From transitional rockers like 'Wannamama' and 'Oh God,' Pop spreads his wings, relying on a production flare, which makes the record feel fresh and slick as well as charmingly hi-lo-fi. 'Never Never Love' shows that while he hasn't abandoned the dynamics of the Rock group he has also been steeping himself in contemporary R&B. Flamboyant, utterly self-confident, completely his own man and so uninterested in the back and forth of fashion that everything he makes is an instant classic, Pop Levi is in the building. Bow down and give thanks.

Schaeffer, Janek
Extended Play [Triptych for the child survivors of war and conflict] (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 10TH)
PS, US LIMITED EDITION 600. LINE is proud to release the latest audio work from British composer and installation artist Janek Schaefer based on his installation of the same title. Installation Reviews: "a piece to return to again and again... haunting and lulling" [The Wire, UK] "so inspirational, and in many ways very spiritual" [Gerry Turvey] "I was so deeply touched by your piece" [Mandeep Kaur Samra] Red is the colour of Life, of Death, and of Love. Scarlett, my first child, was born in 2005, and since then I have been very aware of how lucky we all are. have been constantly comparing this to the fact that my mother was born in Warsaw in 1942 - the epicenter of World War II. How opposite can two beginnings be? This inspired me to produce the Extended Play installation, which continuously and positively celebrates hope and new beginnings, for child survivors in all situations around the world. The original idea for the composition came from learning about the 'Jodoform' system of secret musical messages that were broadcast by the BBC Service, during music they played was given a particular meaning, which was interpreted by Polish Underground. Discovered from the original Jodoform logbook, that the lovely Polish folk song 'Tango Lyczakowskie', was broadcast on the day my mother was born. Song describes how children in 1918, had been forced to take up arms, in defense of their town. From this tune, chose a short rising musical phrase, and with my arranger Michael Jennings, developed a ten-minute score. Each of the three solo parts was then recorded separately, edited, and cut onto vinyl. In the gallery, 3 x Cello EP's, 3 x Piano EP's, and 3 x Violin EP's are played at either 33, 45, or 78rpm using nine retro record players. These play continuously, and each was modified to stop playing briefly in response to the audience moving around the exhibition. This has the effect of changing and extending the composition, so that it is never the same again.

If you dig the sound of Fairport Convention, early Bee Gees, The Moody Blues, the psychedelic Beatles... 21 tracks available on a compilation for the very first time. SHINDIG MAGAZINE: "It's been a long hiatus but at last here are two excellent new volumes of the cult Fading Yellow series. Vol. 8 is collection of British artist album tracks of the period 1968-75... A beautiful confection of pastoral shades and cotton wool clouds floating in a hazy Summer sky. Predominantly mid-paced and lightly orchestrated, these are often acoustic based songs with electric underpinning. A few, in the interval, have become more familiar, notably the two fine selections by Jan & Lorraine from their recently reissued Gipsy People album. The majority however will be new to your ears. The track selection and flow is pretty much faultless as one track melts effortlessly into the next, working its magic on the ears. In some instances, tracks are surprising reworkings of the most unlikely songs. For instance Raw's (aka New York Public Library) rendition of 'What To Do', from their US and Germany released only Raw Holly album consists of covers of Buddy Holly songs - this one is an orchestrated tabla and sitar version! There are the short sharp spurts like the enigmatic (because there is nothing known about him) Michael Blount with 'Acorn Street' from his 1971 Patchwork album, which at 1.58 leaves you wanting a lot more of the same. P.C. Kent's 'After Dark' is from their self-titled Deram Nova album and is pleasingly pop (think a lighter version of Blossom Toes's 'Postcard' for instance) whilst Vigrass & Osborne's 'Ballerina' (which was also a single or a B side I think) has all the atmosphere, heavy with pathos of Mike Batt's series title track 'Fading Yellow' from Vol.1. Storyteller's 'Alice Brown', Fuchsia's 'Me And My Kite' and Evensong's 'The Smallest Man In The World' are also excellent. Overall, the FY signature brand of soundscape is very much perpetuated here and fans of the series will lap this up. There are as usual liner notes and band pics in the booklet which help contextualise the music nicely. Buy with confidence."

MMM050 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 25TH)
PS, UK Make Mine Music releases a collection of exclusive tracks showcasing the work of artists on the innovative label, as it reaches its landmark 50th release on Monday 24 November. The compilation includes new recruits Piano Magic and Calder, label favorites Epic45 and the musical return of label founder Scott Sinfield aka Portal. After quietly releasing a range of critically acclaimed albums and EPs, Make Mine Music now boldly states its manifesto. These are difficult times for the music industry with file sharing, illegal downloads and falling sales. The traditional music business model is failing and record labels are scrabbling to find a way to survive. Artists too are campaigning for better copyright laws and greater shares of royalties through coalitions. But these still rely on an outdated model of releasing music. For Make Mine Music, this isn't a crisis. It's a golden opportunity. Make Mine Music is a truly radical independent label, run and owned by the artists themselves. The artists pay for the manufacture and promotion of their own records and correspondingly receive 100% of any income generated. There are no management pockets to line, no shareholders to please, no restrictive contracts or demands placed upon the artists. Six years and 50 releases after its inception, Make Mine Music is proof that there is another way. It's time for other artists and labels to catch up. Tracklisting: Millimetrik Ignacio Ramonet et le Metronidazole, Avrocar Two Silver Czars, Schengen The Prince (From Ueno), The Doldrums Try A New Thing, Glen Johnson A Pause in the Night, Portal Prana (Slow Burner), Piano Magic Western Gothic, Yellow6 Day in Pripyat, Planivaar Slow Motion, Epic45 In All the Empty Houses, All Sides Marathon, Innerise Dreams at E38th Street, Weyland No, I Don't Want to be Part of Your Story, Still Crescent In A Northern Landscape, Jelly Antler Back to School (Original Edit), Calder Old.

Fading Yellow Volume 9 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 25TH)
PS, SWEDEN Subtitled: 'The Other Side of Life: Timeless UK Pop-Sike & Other Delights, 1966-1972'. Limited Edition ninth installment of this very fine compilation series that collects the best Pop/Folk/Psyche sounds from the UK circa 1968-75. If you dig the sound of Fairport Convention, early Bee Gees, The Moody Blues, the psychedelic Beatles... 21 tracks available on a compilation for the very first time. SHINDIG MAGAZINE: "Here we are squarely back in singles territory. Pop Workshop's 'Fairyland' is a good starter and manages to be both brash and gentle at the same time. Suzi Klee's 'Punch And Judy Girl' is a plaintive and tremulous pop ballad by this 'Swiss Miss' (I've always wanted to use that somewhere!); it comes across like Jan and Lorraine produced by Mike Batt (only it was produced by Georgio Gomelsky!). Dave Christie's 'Penelope Breedlove' makes its commercial compilation debut (and is also included on Psychic Circle's Fairytales Can Come True comp also out this month); a fabulous and atmospheric pean to the object of his affections, this is NOT the same version as the 6AX acetate compiled on Syde Tryps Vol.7. Although it's the same song, the two versions are markedly different in arrangement and timing, so you certainly need both. Pussyfoot's 'Hasty Words' is another beauty with its lilting 3/3 waltz timing and a lovely choral vocal job to boot. Mike Leslie's 'Office Girl' has been a long time want of mine in the original, a delightful ode to a lonely clerical worker lost in the urban crowd as the singer puckers up the courage to approach her. It deserved to be more than a B side too. Rodney Bewes' 'Dear Mother Love Albert' is the topside to the already compiled and much sought after 'Meter Maid' and it has a similar vibe - was this the actual TV series signature tune or was it written as a single in its own right I wonder? It sounds way too magically bendy for 1970 television! Christian's 'Other Side Of Life' is another restless orch popper with more than a passing reminder of The Apple's 'Other Side' as well. A good string arrangement adds a lot to it. Tony Ritchie seems to have recorded quite a few sides in Europe including the excellent 'Rain On My Window' included here with its urgent "loner" vibe that would have suited Paul & Barry Ryan for instance c.1967. Maybe it's about time a Tony Ritchie anthology was compiled? This is another excellent collection of emotionally challenging sides. You may encounter some of these sides individually occasionally but it is only when they are compiled with this level of aesthetic skill that they fully bloom."

Wallpaper
On The Chewing Gum Ground (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 4TH)
PS, US Keeping a steady sneer but subtracting angst and teenage romanticism WALLPAPER on their debut album "On the Chewing Gum Ground" captures the modern era that they ostentatiously do not feel a part of. Wallpaper's core members started working on music together in middle school, and "On the Chewing Gum Ground" represents much of their adult work over the past four years. Hailing from Auburn, Washington - a place just close enough to the ocean to make weekend trips and understand what the Beach Boys are about - they mix '50s rockabilly and '60s surf mixed with the crucial wave of '80s underground music. The strength allure of the album comes in the juxtaposition of pop sensibilities with lyrics sung like a sliding shimmy but written with a call for a pop-cultural reform.

Wee Hairy Beasties
Holidays Gone Crazy (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 4TH)

Brand new songs for some holidays that exist ("Pumpkinhead") and some that don't ("Dinosaur Christmas")! There are tunes with Shangri-Las finger-popping flavor, fresh seat-of the- pants harmonies, a musical nod to Slade (yes, Slade!), and some very special guests: actual kids singing along in wide-open, b-i-n-g-o style! And, as always, bright and bouncy instrumentation-washboard, slide guitar, thumping upright bass, clarinet and harmonica-percolates like the best Harman-Ising cartoon bug band that ever was. Week That Was, The
S-T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 26TH)
PS, US 2008 debut album from the British Electro Pop outfit, chiefly Field Music dude David Brewis' big brother, and featuring contributions from Field Music colleagues. Musically the record is an expansive tribute, paying direct (and indirect) homage to the wildly ambitious Linn Drum and Fairlight experiments of Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, and Tin Drum-era Japan. Fused with typically detailed arrangements and a sense of drama, this makes The Week That Was a brain-shattering, 32-minute epic, straying far outside the conventions of most indie-guitar music.

Wilderness
(k)no(w)here (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 4TH)
PS, US WILDERNESS' third full-length album entitled "(k)no(w)here" was conceived as one musical piece, and the impetus for this composition came from an invitation to collaborate with renowned visual artist Charles Long at Long's exhibit at the Whitney Biennial in Spring of 2008. The eight identifiable parts of "(k)no(w)here" are not readily separated from each other, such is the flow from and into each part. Created in ways different than the previous Wilderness self-titled album (2005) and the Wilderness "Vessel States" album (2006), "(k)no(w)here" still retains the Wilderness sound, with some evolution. On the new album, James Johnson is sometimes joined vocally by Colin McCann (aka THE LORD DOG BIRD, whose self-titled debut was released by JAGJAGUWAR in the Summer of 2008). And, as on previous albums, McCann performs on guitar, Brian Gossman on bass, and William Goode on drums, but the resulting community of all these parts comes across as more dynamic, and the perceived space they inhabit seems more vast.

Wino
A Bottle of Pills with a Bullet Chaser (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 4TH)
PS, US At two hours in length, "A Bottle Of Pills With A Bullet Chaser" compiles every song ever recorded by Wino. In addition to the many singles and lone album, the set includes six previously unreleased tracks, plus the live track "Dogs," recorded during one of their final live performances. Largely inspired by Swans, Crain and the Amphetamine Reptile roster, WINO were one of the loudest, darkest and most eclectic bands in Louisville during the 1990s, and their influence can be heard today in loads of Louisville bands. Expertly digitally remastered from all of the original master tapes by Alan Douches at West West Side Music (Converge, High On Fire), "A Bottle Of Pills With A Bullet Chaser" is the perfect commemoration to the band that inspired dozens of later Louisville bands and helped launch TEMPORARY RESIDENCE a dozen years ago.

When The Haar Rolls In (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 4TH)
PS, US The fourth album by Scotland's Yorkston brings back all the ambition, beauty, pathos, and full, lush arrangements of his previous albums. The sonic palette includes timpani, clarinet, violin, vibraphone, piano, mandolin, banjo, bouzouki, and wine glasses, surrounding the songs with warmth and grandeur, like the haar in the title (heavy North Sea fog that blankets the Scottish coast). "What distinguishes 'Haar' is the combination of his warm, close to your ear talk-sung vocals with the band's sea-churn playing and his gorgeous songwriting" - 4 stars, Independent.
