4 Guitars
Live At Luxx
PS, UK This was a rare quartet of guitars performance that took place August 8 of 2001 in a now defunct club in Brooklyn by Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo, Nels Cline and Carlos Giffoni. Its a crystal clear multitrack recording that was later mixed and mastered by producer Wharton Tiers. Infinite possibilities are explored as the signature styles of each of the group members create moments of tension, peace, violence, and run trough every possible range of emotions. psychedelic tunnels of sound echo trough endless guitar lines, minimalism and maximalism both present in one moment, there are no solos and no selfishness, as 4 combine to create an unbelievable 40+ minute piece. A document of pure sonic exploration of a moment in time that will never be repeated by 4 of the most respected experimentalist of our day. - Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo from Sonic Youth. -Nels Cline (countless solo projects + member of Wilco). - Carlos Giffoni (upcoming composer/improviser from New York). - R
are live once in a lifetime. guitar quartet performance from 4 of the most important/in demand experimental musicians. - Mixed and mastered by producer Wharton Tiers.

About
Bongo
PS, US RUTGER HOEDEMAEKERS began his debut album three years ago and literally worked on it obsessively for a majority of that time. Having dealt with four collapsed lungs while producing it, Rutger makes good by creating what will surely be one of this year's first major breakthrough records. Straddling the realms of indie rock, electronica, pure pop with a tiny pinch of breakcore, he's created a masterful record full of songs that get stuck in your head, full of tiny details you only hear after repeat listening. But Bongo is far from another boring indie-tronica record. It's got this slightly pissed-off edge while remaining both literate and thoroughly gratifying. This intended liveliness in the music does not come from letting the computer do just "whatever." It comes from creating every little note and sound by hand, like carefully painting a portrait instead of snapping a Polaroid. He's already been playing some of the best festivals in the Netherlands, and has been winning f
istfuls of new fans at each show, expertly straddling the line between rock show excitement and dance party ass shaking.

Amppez
Irony of a Sweet Fruit
PS, US Formed in 2000 in Shizuoka, Japan, Amppez plays emotional balladic indie rock that has been dubbed "melancholic" by critics in Japan. This is their 2nd full length 7 first to be released in the US. The songs are lush and rolling and soaked in effected guitars creating catch tunes that retain the shoe gazer ethos. RIYL: My Bloody Valentine, Tsu Shi Ma Mi Re, Shonen Knife, Bleach03, Sunny Day Real Estate, Fugazi.

Arctic Monkeys
Whatever People Say I Am, That's Not What I Am
PS, UK Musically, there are bits of The Stone Roses, What's The Story Morning Glory, and Nevermind. As catchy as those reference points are, it's the songwriting that has won the band a fiercely dedicated following; a mix of the observational storytelling of Davies and Weller crossed with the harsher documentary eye of Mike Skinner of The Streets and "Ghost Town" era Specials.

Ariel Kalma
Osmose
PS, US ARIEL KALMA's magical and weird Osmose originally released in 1978 masterfully matches RICHARD TINTI's rainforest field recordings with Ariel's left field minimalist compositional ideas. Rather than simply relying on the rainforest sounds providing a pleasant backdrop to the drones, the drones interplay with the pitches of the natural sounds to create melancholic, Popol Vuh like grandeurs. The natural chirps and creaks blend with the music to become similar to ambient loops themselves; such that their very tonal nature shifts from being recognizable jungle sounds, frequently phasing into blurred rhythmic elements under the electronic parts. Osmose reminds that not only is the rainforest a place of awe inspiring beauty, but it is also something very dense and alien. Includes three previously unreleased tracks from the same sessions, this reissue finally allows the rainforest to live up to its natural state of untamed jungle.

Beatglider v Shinri
Beatglider v Shinri EP
PS, UK Indie slack-core stars, Beatglider released their debut album in the late nineties, Beatglider quietly wove their own path, securing an underground fan base before coming to the attention of Dakota Records in 2001. Their 2nd album was recorded in Los Angeles with Tom Rothrock (Beck, Elliott Smith, Badly Drawn Boy). Now the languid five-piece are back with two new songs. East coast England meets West coast USA, their music evoking memories of the late-lamented Pavement, My Bloody Valentine and Galaxie 500, fused with their own brand of wistful melancholia. Newcomers Shinri features members of the quietly acclaimed post-rock collective Junkboy (the brothers Hanscomb, who released their exceptional sophomore album, 'Lost Parade', on Enraptured Records last summer) and emo-rock kings Cars As Weapons (drummer Richie Harwood), with vocals by Jay Thornton (who drew the stunning cover artwork). Shinri have been working tirelessly on recordings of late, and 'Sever' and 'Corn Fields'
mark Shinri's debut recorded output. Their influences range far and wide -such as Elliott Smith, & The Flaming Lips to the more esoteric, pagan melodies of Bert Jansch, Vashti Bunyan and The Incredible String Band - fusing these ingredients together in their own inimitable style help to make Shinri a tantalising prospect.

Below The Sea
Blame It On The Past
PS, CANADA New album from "important" Montreal instrumental outfit. Review from ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "With their third opus, Below the Sea have reached maturity. Blame It on the Past can be approached and assessed on its own terms, without the need to resort to post-rock name-dropping. Once again, the band has grown in tightness and musicianship. Original bassist Mathieu Lévesque is out, replaced by Victor Meyer, who provides a stronger anchor for Pascal Asselin's ever-changing drum patterns. Patrick Lacharité's guitar work has also grown more varied, with new effects (including some fine backwards playing) and melodies that sound like a post-rocker tempted by surf music. Blame It on the Past is a short album, but its 40 minutes are put to excellent use. Each of the nine tracks clocks in at somewhere between three and five minutes. Short and to the point, they all focus on the theme at hand. Surprisingly, this is done so without sacrificing on atmospheres -- a key element of the post-
rock style. The trio proves that it is not necessary to spend five minutes establishing a mood before diving into the first guitar line. Tunes like "Anonymity," "As Is," and "Light at Night" manage to lull the listener into a gentle half sleep, treat him or her to some exquisite melodies, include a few changes, and bring him or her back to the real world, all within four minutes. Even more importantly, these pieces leave a lasting impression. After a few listens, you'll be whistling a few of these in the shower. If post-rock as a style has been accused of self-indulgence (sometimes rightfully so), Below the Sea remedy the situation. Blame It on the Past strips off the style's excesses and delivers it in radio-ready chunks. If there is any justice in the music business, this album will be the group's international ticket. Highly recommended."

Bertolino, Paul
Inner Soundtrack
PS, US PAUL BERTOLINO's debut solo effort is the kind of record that just can't help but make new friends with every first-time listener. A mix of classic baroque pop, psych, and power-pop, each track is a timeless example of pop-rock songwriting at its very best, and is enough to hook the most jaded music-lover. But this album is more than just an exercise in mastery of boutique styles. This is an intimate experience, an Inner Soundtrack, if you will. Just listen to his sadly-sweet, pitch-perfect vocal sensibilities and you can forget about coming out the other side. Put it all together with arrangements that manage to be lush and spatial without ever sounding slick or overproduced. Both sides of your cranium will feel the love. Paul draws from a well that incorporates the best elements of ballsy '60s jangle-rock, '70s AM gold, and maybe even a pinch of Radio Shack synth swagger. Almost in spite of that, it's songwriting so solid and proprietary that it refuses to be picked apart
into its base elements.

PS, UK Thirteen new tracks from "the most criminally under-appreciated indie band in America" (The Big Takeover, USA). Possibly their strongest set of songs to date, and certainly a modern day pop classic! Blackshaw, James
O True Believers
PS, US When UK-native James Blackshaw plays his 12-string, something spiritual takes place. This unassuming 23 year-old is transformed into a guitar god whose name belongs alongside the likes of Jack Rose, Steffen Basho-Junghans, and Glenn Jones. Making instrumental, solo, acoustic music that remains consistently interesting and moving is a difficult task. Yet, time after time, Blackshaw hits out of the park, constantly breaking boundaries in what could be conceived as a somewhat limited medium. O True Believers is the latest in a string of impressive releases, all with their own mood and inspiration. An untrained musician living in the isolated suburban environs of Greater London, Blackshaw draws inspiration not only from the early Takoma Records roster, but from sources as varied as the sublime film-work of Werner Herzog, the books of Richard Brautigan and an endless amount of music: free-jazz, 60's psych, drone, ethnic music and modern-day composers, to name a few. He is also a
n enthusiastic runner, part-time poet and a keen reader of books on Hindu and Sufi religion and mythology. Consisting of mainly solo 12-string acoustic guitar, played in a finger-picked style not too sissimilar to Robbie Basho, perhaps Blackshaw's biggest inspiration, James Blackshaw has devised new tunings and new techniques both of which are in full display on O True Believers. In these part improvised and part written songs, Blackshaw traverses between Eastern and Western scales; simple and incredibly intricate picking patterns; waves of fast, powerful rolls and glass-fragile harmonics. The album is embellished with other instruments such as the Hindustani tamboura and harmonium and a specially tuned psaltery of Eastern-European origin called a Cymbala. Like most of his previous work, O True Believers may be born of a finite moment of hope in a sea of infinite sadness, a fleeting moment of fragile beauty that extends beyond it's physicality. Unlike past albums, the listener's f
eeling upon conclusion is more ambiguous: there is no happy and immediate resolution, as if ghosts of the past will find themselves resurfacing time and time again in the future, an idea which is reflected in several reoccurring themes within the songs themselves. Colourful ragas sit next to mournful Fahey-esque refrains, triumphant mountaintop marches besides almost neo-classical chord changes, endlessly repeating until there is only transcendence. This is James Blackshaw at his most vunerable and sincere and, with that, there comes rare and wonderful qualities to his music: truth and freedom. James Blackshaw has toured and collaborated with artists such as Josephine Foster, Peter Wright, Taurpis Tula, Ashtray Navigations in the UK and Europe and is due to tour the US in the summer of 2006. James is also confirmed and has contributed tracks to two forthcoming compilations in 2006, which sees him alongside the likes of Six Organs of Admittance, Marissa Nadler, Christina Carter, Jo
hn Fahey, Robbie Basho and Peter Lang.

Brothers With Different Mothers, The
Daffodils and Devils
PS, JP Imagine a world where The Monkees were played by The Stone Roses. From Manchester, UK, The Brothers With Different Mothers love the vibe of the live stage, at the same time being masters of pulling pop magic out of the studio hat. "Daffodils and Devils" features 12 cuts, five of which appeared briefly on a self-released album which quickly sold out in 2004. Opening track, the brass-driven dancefloor bouncer "Rocktopussy" was released as a single in the UK and gained play on both the BBC and
Virgin Radio. It also attracted international attention, gaining radio play as far away as Sweden, and winning fans from around Europe. There are nods to the Stones, Supergrass, CSNY and The Super Furry Animals, but with a sound and attitude that is theirs alone, The Brothers distill their own tasty brew. "Daffodils and Devils" is English pop at its very best, refined yet fresh. You can dance to it, sing along to it, dream to it. Legendary US producer Kim Fowley says "The Brothers With Different Mothers are wonderful...a 21st century variation on Aztec Camera and Simon & Garfunkel...what they promised, TBWDM deliver...". The Poptones website (Alan McGee's post Creation Records label) made TBWDM their 'Download of the Week' recently and said "The Brothers with Different Mothers have taken up the DNA of the psychedelic prime minister of hippie-punk-rock-freakery David Crosby and twisted and turned it into a completely different m*therf*cker that is next to impossible not to love..."

Che
Sexy 70 - Music Inspired By The Brazilian Erotic Movies of the '70s
PS, US A tribute to the sounds of older Brazilian porn movies, done in a style that's really faithful to the original sound of the '70s-a mode that's never too kitschy, never just easy funk-but really well-done work with a tremendously groovy sound. Producer CHE originally wanted to make a compilation of the best music from '70s Brazilian pornochanchadas, but found that the source material was in such bad shape that he couldn't do the job right, so he headed into the studio with a key group of musicians who really get the original sound of the films, and who revel here in a hiply-jazzy take on older grooves. The overall sound here is more jazzy and bossa-based than some of the skunkier funk of '70s US porno with echoes of Italian soundtrack work of the same period. Instrumentation includes lots of keyboards and vibes, and the sound could easily be passed off as a '70s original.

Citay
Self-Titled
PS, UK Out of San Francisco, Citay is a new project by Ezra Feinberg, formerly of Piano Magic, in collaboration with Tim Green from The Fucking Champs. Citay, named for the way the word "city" is often sung, is a powerful, elegiac blend of seemingly disparate musical elements. Taking its cue from the dramatic song structures of 1970s AM rock, Citay combines Led Zeppelin acoustic guitars and organs with soaring guitar harmonies and lush, choral voices. The influences of the early records of Mike Oldfield, Roy Harper, John Fahey, and more recently the Japanese band Ghost can be heard as well. Certain moments sound like the long, baroque intros of Metallica songs (before the metal takes over) while other moments unleash themselves in triumphant builds and emotional landings. The sound is rounded out by breezy, distinctly psych-ed vocal harmonies of The Byrds and The Beach Boys, adding a blissed-out flavor to the blend. The result is something entirely new. With smoking Thin Lizzy dua
l leads and California vocal harmonies, Citay will soon be enchanting the kids from the city to the country and back again. After spending 6 years in the indie rat race of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Ezra Feinberg moved to San Francisco to record with Tim Green of The Fucking Champs, a veteran of the SF scene who moved to the Bay Area after time in Washington, D.C. as a member of that city's seminal punk band The Nation Of Ulysseys. Feinberg and Green had been friends for a while and enjoyed a mutual love of old psychedelic and proto-metal records. Tired of asymmetrical haircuts and hipsters talking about Gang Of Four all the time, Feinberg arrived to the West Coast searching for those moments of rock history that had fallen off the radar. Work on Citay began in the fall of 2004. Accoring to Feinberg, "When Citay started I had been thinking of acoustic Led Zep and the first 2 Heart albums (Dreamboat Annie and Little Queen). Also the drama throughout Queen II, and the trippy/spooky Bla
ck Sabbath bongo songs where Ozzy's voice has tons of chorus to make it kind of watery and lava-lamp-y. Led Zep, Heart, and Sabbath are not really known for their acoustic moments, and I hadn't heard anyone taking a cue from that stuff and I felt like it was time someone tried to do something new with those ideas... " Citay is produced by Tim Green who has produced albums by Sleater-Kinney, Comets On Fire, The Melvins, The Donnas, Bikini Kill, Trans Am, and many others.

Cluck, Diane
Black With Green Leaves / Macy's Day Bird
PS, US This deluxe double cd, priced the same as a single disc, pairs up Diane Cluck's 2nd full length album Macy's Day Bird with the ep titled Black With Green Leaves. Both were originally was released by Diane in an elaborate tiny handmade edtions. These are arguably Diane's most compelling, immediate and striking records and it was these two recordings that originally caught the ear of Important Records in 2001. Macy's Day Bird/Black With Green Leaves is highly recommended to Diane's many new fans who picked up on her after the release of Oh Vanille/Ova Nil in early 2005. The attentive listener will find her hauntingly clear voice weaving melodies of love, pain and city life through sparse arrangements of piano, acoustic guitar and harmonium. This material is newly restored/mastered by James Fei. Oh Vanille/Ova Nil was recently given the status of No. 2 US Underground album of 2005 by the UK's esteemed Mojo Magazine. "i made these albums a few years ago for myself and friends a
bout myself and friends. to me they're total fidelity recordings-- true documents of how i felt / what i experienced in a particular time and place there. have been suggestions that i rerecord to make the songs sound some version of more appealing... but i'd rather keep flowing / playing in the moment things come out right the first time even if they are hard to look at / hear in that form those tend to be the forms which teach me the most about myself / the world...don't apologize for yrself! be a mess...be whatever... these songs were important for me to make & record if they're useful / helpful to other people i'm glad about that !" - Diane Cluck. - This double cd is housed in a deluxe gatefold cardboard sleeve of the highest quality and priced modestly as a single cd. - Diane's previous album on Important was met with much acclaim and Mojo magazine elected it underground album of the month. - Diane Cluck is recognized as a key figure in the downtown NYC folk scene and has been
praised in the press by Devendra Banhart and many other popular folksters. - Diane has toured Europe and the United States extensively in the last few years. - She appeared alongside Iron & Wine, Vertiver, Joanna Newsom, Six Organs Of Admittance, White Magic, Matt Valentine, CocoRosie, Vashti Bunyan and many more on the 2004 Golden Apples Of The Sun compilation in Arthur Magazine. Danielle Dax
Bad Miss M: Danielle Dax Live
PS, UK The first ever DVD to feature Britain's queen of Psychedelia, Danielle Dax. A performer whose enigmatic and experimental work reflected the strong influence of Biblical mysticism and Middle Eastern musical textures, Danielle Dax was born in Southend, England. She made her musical debut in 1979 as the keyboardist in the seven-piece Amy Turtle and the Crossroads; and then went on to front the Lemon Kittens. Upon the Lemon Kittens's 1982 split, Dax mounted a solo career. She debuted a year later with Pop-Eyes, a true solo effort for which she wrote and performed every song alone, even handling mixing and production duties and distributing the record through her own Awesome label. While her heavy makeup and colossal hair aligned her with the thriving "Batcave" Goth scene, she steadfastly avoided easy pigeonholing, even making the leap into film with appearance's in Neil Jordan's adult fable The Company of Wolves. Dax returned to music in 1984 with the Jesus Egg That Wept EP, an
d went on to recruit a live band, emerging as a significant concert draw; a series of singles including 1985's "Yummer Yummer Man," 1986's "Where the Flies Are," 1988's "Cat-House" and 1989's "White Knuckle Ride" - each slightly more commercial than the last - also established her as a force on the independent charts, and after the success of 1987's "Inky Bloaters" LP, she signed to Sire. "Bad Miss M" captures a full show Danielle played in London at the height of her mid-1980's solo success. Amongst the tracks featured are UK Independent Chart Top Ten hit "Yummer Yummer Man".

DeathFrom Above 1979
Heads Up
PS, CA DEATH FROM ABOVE 1979's debut five song mini album simultaneously destroys and pay homage to rock music. It's populated with rock structure and hooks, yet the instrumentation (bass guitar and drums only) and sheer volume sets it aside from anything else the world has ever heard. The Canadian duo had been gathering immense momentum with the release of HEADS UP due to dedicated touring and amazing press response, but this momentum has reached an entirely new plateau with their release of YOU'RE A WOMAN, I'M A MACHINE (VICE / LAST GANG / ACHE). "This is that album you pop in, get a quick buzz off of, and then spend an hour digging around in your music collection trying to find something even half as cool to listen to. Aww god, it's awesome. 9/10 " - Firesideometer. "This shit is raw! So distorted you'll think someone poured a cup of grit inside your CD player. DFA manage to sound both melodic and harsh at the same time, kicking out a decidedly rough set of punk jams that kick
and scream like a toddler having a tantrum." - Fracture "Organized but unforgiving slabs of frantic bass and speedfreak drums are topped with distorted vocals, occasionally giving way for handclaps, vocoder voices and (sampled?) electro intros. The pacing and intensity is relentless, but not at the expense of melody and songs, allowing T.O.'s DFA to eloquently out-run and out-heavy most of their fellow rock 'n' rollers. 9/10" - Montreal Mirror "These guys are refreshing, they are loud as fuck, they sing about sluts and cocaine, and at the same time it's pretty damn catchy. If I wasn't so sure this would scare my mom, I'd almost be afraid to like it, it's so catchy." - Buddyhead.

The original group split in 1984, with Runacres later founding several labels and the band Brightside, and Andy Diagram joining a chart-bound James
. Dislocation Dance reformed for a Japanese tour in 2000, and a new album, Cromer, in 2005. This newly expanded and remastered edition of Midnight Shift features 74 minutes of music and seven bonus tracks, including non-album singles and b-sides and a Dennis Bovell dub mix of Show Me. The booklet features all-new artwork, as well as a detailed artist biography.

Dury, Ian
Reasons To Be Cheerful (2 x CD)
PS, US 2CD set contains 34 of his greatest tracks. Ian Dury, like Ray Davies and Paul Weller was a very English talent. The colorful, metropolis-inhabiting characters like Billericay Dickie or Plaistow Patricia he sung about, and the ever so cockney music hall accent he chose to sing in, were a big part of that. But mostly, it was the detailed, poetic way he cataloged English life and the melting pot of musical styles he used to do so, from punk and funk to jazz and rock'n'roll, which left no doubt that Dury's work could only come from one place: the very heart of England. So few were surprised when after his death Sir Paul McCartney, Robbie Williams, Madness and more all lined up to pay their respects with cover versions of some of his best loved songs. You'll find plenty of them here, in their original versions, culled from his entire career from the mid-'70s with pub rockers Kilburn & The High Roads through the golden years with the majestic Blockheads right up to the last stud
io recordings at the start of the '90s. Tracks: 1. Wake Up (CD01) 2. Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll 3. Sweet Gene Vincent 4. My Old Man 5. What A Waste 6. Razzle In MY Pocket 7. Fort Dax
Diver's
PS, US Nigh-on three years after Folly and at least 18 moons since the John Peel session where the ideas were first aired, DARREN DURHAM returns under the FORT DAX moniker with his somewhat-overdue new album. Though noticeably different in tone and hue to its predecessor and assuredly darker, the album, as with previous Fort Dax releases, remains firmly rooted in melody. Folly went on to be regarded as an "ambient" work in certain quarters, but Darren swears that this was largely due to the low-volume mastering. Suffice it to say that Diver's contains less of "those Vangelis synthesizers" and a sleeve instruction to "play much louder." This time around, there may also be other musicians involved, an amount of real instrumentation, and at least one field recording from the Bronte Country valley where he lives and works.

GHQ
Cosmology of Eye
PS, US The first proper release from this head-spinning acid/drone/raga crew that's been quietly haunting the Northeast for a couple years now. For this album the band was MARCIA BASSETT (DOUBLE LEOPARDS, HOTOGISU, ZAIMPH, UN, etc.), STEVE GUNN, and PETE NOLAN (MAGIK MARKERS, VANISHING VOICE, etc.). Heavily dosed trips into East Coast trance primitivism, gushing with mantric meshes of strings and voice. Centered around Bassett & Gunn's acoustic guitar freeflow, and wrapped up in layers of hovering vocal mist, buzzing drones, percussive clatter, and Nolan's subtle but massively psychedelic electric guitar moves. Over five extended tracks things slide along from bone rattling minimal vibrations, dip into opiated folk beauty, and then blow things wide open with a full side of fevered, acid soaked raga lift-off. LP pressed on 180-gram virgin vinyl and packaged in a sweet two-color letterpress printed heavy black artboard cover, with a nice 8" x 10" photo insert shot by TOM CARTER. Han

Hurray

PS, US HURRAY is ZAK PREKOP, JOSH BRAND, PETE MANDRADJIEFF and RICH ALDRICH. They hail from the hidden sectors of New York City, and have released one 7-inch on the Skul Record label and recently presented their first art show at the Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery also of New York City. This is their first full length recording and is a must for fans of ambiguous, anomalous, and unobtrusive sound creation whose mystery is not invoked by hyperbole, pseudo-mythology or fake histories, but by giving full allowance to otherness and seeking beauty by allowing it to happen, which often means allowing it not to happen. Mishandled guitars, unknown electronics, amplified percussives and various layers of buzz coagulate and dissipate in measured restraint. I hesitate to use blighted terms like "lowercase" music, as Hurray shys not from some harsher territories and melodic (if emaciated and ghostly) material sometimes drifts into consciousness; two things I think of as contrasting w/the more didac
tic, "European" music associated w/said term. So, I'll avoid terminology and just say Im very glad to know this record."-Greg Kelley

Jam, The
Extras
PS, UK Pity the oft-neglected B-side. Often just a throwaway track designed to back up but not supersede a band's 'official' new release, by the time the single is filed away alphabetically, it's usually forgotten by even the most zealous collector. Unless of course the B-side is by seminal English mod revivalists The Jam, in which case a closer listen is not only warranted, but required. For The Jam packed their B-side songs with more fire and brimstone than most bands did the A-sides. Unfortunately the vinyl days of yore are but a memory. Fortunately, EXTRAS collects most of the Jam's odds and sods on disc for fans young and old. A bonus is Paul Weller's always-eclectic taste in covers, which runs from the Who ("So Sad About Us") to the Beatles ("And Your Bird Can Sing")to the godfather of soul himself , Mr. James Brown ("I Got You [I Feel Good]"). EXTRAS is valuable not only as a chronology of the gems that Weller was tossing off in his spare time, but as a look at how truly ec
lectic the Jam were as a band. Tracks: 1. The Dreams Of Children 2. Tales From The Riverbank 3. Liza Radley 4. Move On Up 5. Shopping 6. Smithers-Jones 7. Pop Art Poem 8. Boy About Town 9. A Solid Bond In Your Heart 10. No One In The World 11. And Your Bird Can Sing 12. Burning Sky 13. Thick As Thieves 14. Disguises 15. Get Yourself Together 16. The Butterfly Collector 17. King, Anna
Back To Soul
PS, UK The James Brown Revue has included numerous 'feature' female singers through the decades, from Tammy Montgomery(Terrell), Sugar Pie DeSanto and Vicki Anderson to Yvonne Fair and Lynn Collins, but while Mr Brown included most of these ladies in 'live' LPs, and others had solo contracts with his label, only Anna King enjoyed the privilege of James Brown producing an album by her. It was 1963, and Brown had just signed with Smash Records to score a big pop hit with 'Out of Sight'. He noted the quality of Anna's voice, had her sign with Smash and produced the "Back To Soul" LP. The album includes Anna's distinctive versions of several soul and blues hits and some Brown originals written under various pseudonyms, plus a storming duet with Bobby Byrd, 'Baby Baby Baby', which took her into the R&B top 50 early in 1964 and 'bubbling under' the Billboard Hot 100. Thus with Anna's stirring, soulful vocals, a range of familiar songs, the support of the James Brown Band and the product
ion skills of Mr Brown himself, "Back To Soul" was a notable album release on UK Philips in 1964, though it enjoyed but modest sales to the avid soul fans of the day. Consequently it has long been a rare collectors' item, a situation which will be remedied by its long-awaited re-issue on Shout!. Member of the James Brown Revue. Album produced by James Brown. Includes Songs written by James Brown. Includes duet with Bobby Byrd. Collectable album, never reissued or on CD before.

Lampshade
Let's Away
PS, GERMANY 'Let's Away' is the new beautifully twisted album from Danish/Swedish outfit Lampshade. This second album came to being under rather unique circumstances. Life on the road, closing the year 2005 with concerts in 9 countries, and the fact that the band members live in Sweden and Denmark, meant that 'Let's Away' by far was created on the road, while new songs were arranged in the tour bus and rehearsed on venues in e.g. Berlin, Amsterdam and Oslo. The largest part of the songs on the album are written by the charismatic lead singer rebekkamaria, and the sound of the album was born in the crossing of the band being partial to grandiose Nordic sound, singer/songwriter music and Swedish pop music - an inspiration the two new guitarists carry with them from their native country. In this way the music stretch from light and obliging melodies to rhythmically founded pop songs and grandiose beautifully noisy explosions of sound. The title of the album is inspired by Shakespeare
's Romeo and Juliet and reflects the narrative in the lyrical universe that involves English, Danish and Swedish. One of the guest-acts on the album is the American singer/songwriter DAMIEN JURADO, who has released a great number of albums on Sub Pop and Secretly Canadian.

Loop
A Gilded Eternity
PS, UK In the earliest days of both Spacemen 3 and Loop the two were neck and neck. Two exciting new concept bands. Loop stayed with the heavier, stoned-out Stooges/Hawkwind sound and remained more obscure while SM3 gained much greater notoriety. Discordant, elusive and utterly hypnotic, Loop conjured a dark, trance-like spell that contrasted sharply with the prevailing British pop music trends of their time. Equal parts the Stooges, Can, and Hawkwind, in tandem with fellow travellers Spacemen 3 they resurrected the concept of space-rock for a new era, creating droning soundscapes of bleak beauty and harsh dissonance.

Maniqui Lazer
I Learn Everything on TV
PS, MEXICO Hi-fi attitude compressed in lo-fi seconds twined with noisy synthetic pop winks "Lazer punk" they call it. What Alejandro Tonela (bass and keyboards), Valentin Torres (keyboards) and Jung Sing (drums and vocals) have been doing since the beginning of 2005, in the warm border city of Mexicali, Mexico, is something far beyond "simple" punk. This young musician's power combo, with a sinister humor and electronic hints, roughly deconstruct rock music that, until today, has grown a great legion of fans all over the country. These three mannequins breakthrough the conventional apparel, making you go wild and dance with music you're not even supposed to dance to. More, Beny
El Barbaro Del Ritmo!
PS, US Possibly the biggest star EVER in his native Cuba, and a major player as a singer, songwriter and bandleader throughout the Latin world. Beny was the amazing singer on some of Perez Prado's biggest hits, the leader of his own combos, AND a heart-throb superstar solo singer; he dominated the world of Mambo singing from the 1940s onwards. Beny More is in short, the greatest singer of popular music Cuba has ever produced. Think Frank Sinatra or Nat "King" Cole combined with Elvis and The Beatles and you'll get an idea of how he's perceived in Cuba, especially by the older generation which became the backbone of The Buena Vista Social Club and how he should be regarded elsewhere. In the 40 years since his death, no Cuban vocalist has emerged to fill his shoes, and he remains as close as ever to the hearts of the Cuban people. Few singers in this hemisphere have consistently matched his interpretive gifts, vocal virtuosity, and comfort with a range of styles. Mores genius lay in
his effortless synthesis of two of the major currents of Cuban song -- Afro-Cuban son and the Spanish-derived guajiro music of the Cuban countryside. He was equally successful with boleros as with mambos and rumbas. Most important is what he conveyed with his singing: a tenderness and direct emotional appeal in his boleros, a hip-shaking exuberance in his mambos, and always from the heart!

Mouthus
The Long Salt
PS, This album is a return to more abrasive and heavy Mouthus territory after forays into acoustic instrumentation and, yes, a Fleetwood Mac cover on their recent Troubleman full-length. Free/tribal percussion spatter 'n clatter duels with endlessly mutating three chord sludge-riffage beneath thick, poison clouds of delayed-out vocal groan. Truly CHOCK full of manic bad-mood energy but maybe psych-droney and resin-soaked enough for the new crop of crunchier noise-heads to nod to as well. Electric guitars strung with duct tape and drums equipped with hundred-year old heads are jettisoned into deep space and dynamited, combusting so vividly that the afterimages soak our retinas with mandalas of interwoven earthworms and beer funnels for hours afterwards. We pass the savings on to YOU! The Long Salt also features Samara Lubelski. "It's messy, beautiful and recalls all the effects and variables of a psychedelic painting or a hyper-real physical experience"- Brainwashed. "A bottomless
well of crashing jolts, roaring accelerations and rumbling cacophany. Mouthus have enough wordless verbiage to fill all the empty heads that could use it" The Wire.

PS, US Follows their suprise hit EP w/a lethal dose of rock n roll wizardry, eschewing the dancefloor & the post punk revivalism coming from the UK recently. A blustering cacophany of melody, guitar squalor, dramatic flair, propuslive drums & shades of death & love . Produced by Rob Schnapf (Elliott Smith, Beck).

Out Out
Virtual Sound Images
PS, US Out Out returns with the first album of new material in many years. Virtual Sound Images is a bit of a departure from the more 'rock' aspects of Out Out; principally instrumental, the record still shows the penchant for layers and textures that have always been an Out Out signature, yet this time around the guitars are gone and the beats take higher priority. The result is a record worthy of both headphones and club PAs. More lighthearted in spirit than earler Out Out works, with clever use of dialogue snippets in tracks like "Learning English In N.Y.C." and "Opto-Coupler", the album is nicely contrasted with darker, yet still engergetic, titles like "Forestry For The Thieves" and "Disconnect".

Piano Magic
Incurable
PS, US World-exclusive to Important Records. New 4 track EP. In stark contrast to last winter's "Opencast Heart EP", "Incurable" brings to mind the mid-80's 4AD Records ethereal romanticism of This Mortal Coil, Cocteau Twins & Dead Can Dance. It's a glacially produced, though spiritually warm, set of songs which evoke beautiful, though bleak, European Winter landscapes, lost causes & broken hearts. Features guest vocals from Angele David-Guillou (KLIMA).

Psychedelic Furs
Psychedelic Furs
PS, US Their debut reissued with liner notes. Moniker to the contrary, the Psychedelic Furs bore little in common with the concurrent "psychedelic revival" of early-'80s British bands like Echo & the Bunnymen and Teardrop Explodes. Instead, they married post-punk guitar rock with an artier, Bowie-derived archness and a touch of the Velvet Underground's atmospheric din. The guitars of John Ashton and Roger Morris combine with Duncan Kilburn's gloriously trashy sax to produce a wall of sound that's involving but never overwhelming. Kudos for shaping this gargantuan aural attack must go to producers Martin Hannett and Steve Lillywhite.Over this transcendent racket, Richard Butler lays down his precocious, 40-packs-of cigarettes rasp. His world-weary, stream-of-consciousness poetics color the proceedings considerably. Johnny Rotten's snotty punk iconclasm is the building block for much of this album, but the band's larger agenda is already being implemented.

Rudolf Rocker
Rabbiting With Richard Dido
PS, UK Deadpan vocals, bossanova beats, big, distorted guitars vs. insane keyboards, live drums layered on a detuned drummachine... and whistling! Yes, welcome to the second album from RUDOLF ROCKER. Their keyboard player happens to be a member of BBC TV's cult comedy The League of Gentlemen but this music speaks for itself-in its own bizarre language. The late John Peel naturally championed their previous album and singles which gave rise to reviews like: "An extraordinary band...sound like Noel Coward sniffing glue" -Melody Maker. "Situationist easy listening noise...a fine selection of cheese cuts" NME. "Magazine playing the James Last Orchestra" Event. Their songs examine war, dead philosophers, items of percussion, big-chinned celebrities and much much more. They're named after a Germanic icon too which is why we say that Rudolf Rocker truly are the old Franz Ferdinand!

Rum Diary
We're Afraid of Heights Tonight
PS, US Three songs into the RUM DIARY's new album, We're Afraid Of Heights Tonight you might find yourself asking "Is this the same band or a mix CD?" When the group set out to record their latest release, they wanted to craft "an album"-a true portfolio of songs with a unique variance strung together by an uncommon thread. They questioned the albums of today and pondered the classics of yesteryear. They recruited PAUL JENKINS (BLACK HEART PROCESSION, THREE MILE PILOT) and TIM MOONEY (AMERICAN MUSIC CLUB) to lend a hand in the studio and after ten months hard work they emerged with Heights, an album that guides listeners along a narrow trail through valleys of dense fog, whispering grasslands, and treacherous mountain passes.

Scarboro Aquarium Club
Black Swan Days
PS, UK Black Swan Days is the follow-up to Scarboro Aquarium Club's acclaimed debut Poisoned. Like its predecessor, this new album is mainly the work of Corey W Schmidt with help from a few collaborators. Corey's passion for pop music is again present in 12 songs that draw equally from the folk songwriting of the 60s and 80s tecno-pop, with references to such different artists as Scott Walker ('Blind Like The Sun'), Roxy Music ('All Her Careful Plans'), Saint Etienne ('Before The Morning Light') and the exotic legacy of El Records ('The Queen Of The Beach'). But more than anything, "Black Swan Days" is a contemporary record which follows a tradition of devoted music artisans that goes from Brian Wilson through Todd Rundgren to Stephin Merrit of the Magnetic Fields, artists who understand the pop craft as predominantly an individual process with the aim to become universal.

Sex Pistols
The Great Rock N Roll Swindle
PS, US Originally released in 1979 as the soundtrack to a documentary that marked the rocket rise and flaming crash of the SexPistols, The Great Rock & Roll Swindle was really Pistols' manager Malcolm McLaren's cinematic (and vinyl) potshot at the music industry he despised. Engaged in vicious legal battles with Johnny Rotten, Warner Brothers Records and Virgin Records,
McLaren fought back in the only way he knew how, by raising hell and documenting the whole bloody mess. By the time The Great Rock & Roll Swindle was released, the punk-era soap opera had ended: Sid Vicious was dead and Rotten had formed Publi
