Adams, Keith John
Unclever
PS, US Unclever is the new album by The Keith John Adams. It was recorded
in 2006/2007 at Bel Air studios in Athens, Georgia. Jason NeSmith
produced and played drums, while Kay Stanton played bass. KJA played
guitars and sung. Unclever is his most rocking record to date, following
the pop of 2005's Pip and the alt-folk of 2002's Sunshine Loft. The
"bandness" of the album also led to the addition of the
"The". Keith's Athens connection was fostered by local label
Happy Happy Birthday To Me, which released Pip in 2005.

Ambarchi, Oren & Avenaim, Robbie
Clockwork
PS, AUSTRALIA Its initial release - an edition of 100 3" CD-Rs
on Ambarchi's Jerker Productions label back in 1999 - let it slide
by just enough aesthetic radars to register among cognoscenti. Coupled
with Ambarchi's solo work from the era, the recording marked a shift
from the gonzo-rock of the duo's previous band, Phlegm. Things happen
throughout Clockwork that had never really happened before. Recorded
in front of a live audience for that 'what we did on our holidays'
feel, Avenaim and Ambarchi unravel their detourned instrumental panoply
into a series of parallel universe propositions - (ie. If Ambarchi's
concurrent vinyl-only Stacte series was Alvin Lucier and Cluster collaborating
for Mego, then Clockwork is Mickey Hart's Gamelan Orchestra performing
Ionisation.) The scarcity of both Clockwork and Stacte within the
sphere of known sound lent a subtle distortion to received wisdom
of both Ambarchi's and Avenaim's development. The jump from their
1999 duo disc on Tzadik, The Alter Rebbe's Nigun, to their recent
collaborative recordings with Keith Rowe, Sachiko M, and Otomo Yoshihide,
is indeed a wide and almost inexplicable chasm. Those in contact with
Ambarchi's solo recordings for the Touch label, or with Avenaim's
live performances in Australia, would be partially clued in to the
shifts in approach that occurred in the intervening period. This reissue
of Clockwork - its reinstatement in the 'marketplace' for immediate
edification and dissemination - is not just timely; it is also one
of 2005's headiest pleasures. And that one of the most important pieces
of the Ambarchi/Avenaim puzzle will finally achieve its deserved position
within a trajectory of non-idiomatic improvisation (I'll say transitional,
lest Lawrence English side-swipe me,) well, one doesn't need to sound
that final gong to induce the respectful applause of the concert patron.
This is, you might say, a photograph of the clockwork of time between...

Volume Objects
PS, US Abstract Ambience - Broken Space. In the desire to make recorded
sound as tactile as possible Autistici (UK), recently featured on
12k's Blueprints compilation (12k1039), has sculpted found objects,
broken acoustic instruments, synthesizers and environmental recordings
into Volume Objects. Expertly realized and designed, Volume Objects
is loose and organic but demands careful listening. Melody and form
are hinted at and then in a whisper, a crackle, are gone. A sense
of narrative and place created as if a hundred tiny objects are scattered
in front of you, a fractured story that you thought you once remembered.
The packaging for this release includes an 8-page booklet of black
& white photography by Taylor Deupree inspired by the music and
titles of the audio pieces. All printed materials in this package
have been printed on 100% recycled paper.

Burial
Untrue
PS, US New album from mystery artist, just who is Burial? A new record
of weird soul music, which lovingly processes spectral female voices
into vaporized R&B and smudged 2-step garage. Vocal lines are
blurred, smeared, pitched up pitched down and pitch bent until their
content is cast adrift from their original context & they whisper
their saccharin sweet nothings into the void. The radioactivity of
this album is all that you'll need to keep you warm this winter. PITCHFORK
REVIEW: "Like Burial, Untrue is a homage to UK garage, or two-step--
a short-lived, oft-mourned fusion of breakbeats and house music that
peaked in the late 90s before morphing into offshoots dubstep, grime,
and bassline house... There's nothing on Untrue that's likely to work
in the dance club, but that's beside the point. Top-heavy with sad
string passages and mournful vocal loops, Untrue is an album meant
to be heard at home, in the car, on headphones-- his songs feel almost
like beautiful secrets being whispered to a listener."

Wakool
Ps, AUSTRALIA Recorded over a series of four Sunday afternoons, Wakool
is an interrogation into an expanded range of techniques and gestures
applied to instruments including banjo, electro acoustic guitar, bandura,
and eukolin. In part an antidote to laborious studio process, this
project privileges live stereo recordings without additional overdubs,
processing or equalization. The varied and spontaneous nature of David's
effortless playing across an eclectic range of instruments was recorded
transparently to direct the aural focus on the dynamics and nuances
comprising each performance. In some ways Wakool is pure documentation
of process, simply demonstrating David's formidable range of concepts
and techniques developed over an extraordinary period of experimentation
and research commencing in the late 70s. On the other hand David's
meticulous preparation of each instrument combined with his prodigious
knowledge of improvisational practice provides a complexity that negates
the need for sophisticated studio process. Wakool stands as a testament
to David's sustained and unwavering commitment to improvisation, which
he executes with enthusiasm, vigour and inventiveness that easily
posits him as the most vital figure in the Australian musical avant-garde.

Cooper, Rod
Friction
PS, AUSTRALIA From Rod Cooper: Friction is the culmination of over
a decade of instrument building practice and design. My predominant
choice of material is metal. I am attracted to its qualities like
a shiny lure that reflects light and filters sound. Each instrument
can take up to three years to design and several weeks to construct.
Initially I focused on percussion and bowing, however recent instruments
have employed continues bowing mechanisms. Coming from a background
of sculpture and later working as a furniture designer, gives me the
freedom to imagine wild objects and the discipline to actually produce
them. I was never satisfied playing a traditional instrument, yet
I had a burning desire to make music. My instruments are like a riddle,
which I have solved through my own means. In my life I have spent
much time in nature and I feel this comes out through my music as
much as the industrial qualities of metal are apparent. The more intentional
aspects of my sound are the open space, or the big sound as other
people have put it to me. Most of the tracks are pieces of music composed
specifically for each instrument and are just recorded as one take.
The instrument is the composition. Comfort through dissonance.

Deupree, Taylor
Landing
PS, AUSTRALIA With 'Landing' American sound artist Taylor Deupree
offers another vision of subtle shifting audio. A progression from
the full-length Northern (12K), Landing matches acoustic instruments
across broad washes of warm sonic texture and floating spatial movement.
Removed from the falling sheets of silent snow swelling outside his
home, Deupree's Landing creates a generous and temperate sonic environment
- both reflective and measured. An audio escape from chillier climes.
BIO: Taylor Deupree (b. 1971) is a sound artist, graphic designer,
and photographer residing in New York. On January 1st, 1997, he founded
12k, a record label that focuses on minimalism and contemporary musical
forms. In 12k's 10 years of existence Deupree has released over 40
CDs by a roster of international sound artists and has developed 12k
into one of the most respected experimental electronic labels in the
world. In September 2000, Deupree and sound artist Richard Chartier
formed LINE, a sublabel of 12k that curates its continuing documentation
of compositional and installation work by composers exploring the
aesthetics of contemporary and digital minimalism.

DJ Olive
Sleep
PS, AUSTRALIA As one of the pioneers of 'sleep' parties in the low
level apartment blocks and converted industrial lots in Brooklyn during
the early nineties, DJ Olive's latest long player collects together
his experiments in ambient sound spaces. It's a celebration of filtered
texture, hidden melody and gentle turntable flickers. Like Buoy his
debut solo record for ROOM40, Sleep is delivered with a simple message
'please listen to this quietly, it's a sleeping pill' and while its
aim might be to induce unconsciousness, this mission is completed
more through a diligent understanding of the possibilities of ambient
sound than through repetition or minimalist approaches. A refined
and emotive composition, Sleep shifts through a variety of phases,
reflecting in some ways on the nature of our sleep patterns. As each
section unfolds, DJ Olive reveals his characteristic sensibility for
spatial mixes and in the process generates some of the most remarkable
and refined post-ambient music to be created in the 20th century.
Free floating audio clouds paint a subtle portrait of dimly lit late
night spaces, faded whispers, close bodies huddled and in the corner
DJ Olive's echoed lullabies coloring the audio sphere.

Fishboy
Albatross: How We Failed to Save the Lone Star State
PS, US Fishboy is a four-piece eccentric indie pop band from Denton,
TX that began as the bedroom solo project of front man Eric Michener.
He was given the nickname on a middle-school field trip after a dare
to pluck and swallow a fish at the Dallas World Aquarium. Six years
and several shoe boxes full of cassette tapes later, Michener moved
from the suburbs to the Texas rock-and-roll Mecca of Denton with a
handful of low budget recordings released by the close-knit Austin
music collective Business Deal Records. It's here that the little
project became a full-fledged rock band that has since taken on several
forms, the most current of which meshes the band's lo-fi twee pop
roots with a loud, energetic rhythm section topped with the occasional
horn, piano, or organ, the result of which is somewhere along the
lines of fellow Texans Daniel Johnston and Britt Daniel (Spoon) joining
the Danielson Famile to play for Anthony Daniels (C3PO) and Daniel
Day Lewis (moustache) as they both drink Jack Daniels on a Sunday
afternoon. Since 2005 the band has toured across the nation more than
a few times and has walked away with a couple of broken vans and a
few gold nuggets, the first of which is a partnership with the Athens,
Georgia label Happy Happy Birthday To Me Records. The second is a
greater appreciation of their home, the folks that surround them,
and the rich history of Texas music. These themes run deep through
the band's new album, Albatross: How We Failed To Save The Lone Star
State With The Power Of Rock And Roll, a record that Michener calls
"a rock opera about how myself, the band, and the ghost of Buddy
Holly attempt to save Texas by going on a tour/crime spree in order
to perform all 8,030 of the songs I've written in my sleep since I
was in the womb." As well as a new album, the next year will
feature a 7" as part of the HHBTM Singles Club, appearances on
HHBTM, Business Deal, and Asthmatic Kitty compilations, a trip to
the 2007 CMJ new music festival, and a couple more of those US tours
(the ghost of Buddy Holly has yet to be confirmed.)

Fox, Robin/Thomas, Clayton
Substation
PS, AUSTRALIA Apart from being recognized as two of Australia's leading
improvising musical forces, Clayton Thomas and Robin Fox are also
acknowledged for their unrelenting experiments and divergent acoustic
approaches in relation to their instrument of choice. Over the past
3 years, Robin Fox has developed some of the most powerful live processing
tools in Australia through his research with MAXMSP. Clayton Thomas
on the other hand has expanded his performance styles, moving between
blistering free jazz explosions to introverted and delicate expanded
preparations on his 100 year old double bass. The results of this
pairing are, as you'd expect, are as diverse as they are spectacular.
Unrelenting double bass movements are reprocessed into microtonal
washes of sound - vibrated objects are transformed into uncharacteristic
acoustic phenomena. This record expands on the techniques of electro-acoustic
traditions and aligns both acoustic and electronic sounds in an integrated
sonic environment where the lines between player and machine, instrument
and processing are blurred and redefined.

Griswold, Erik
Altona Sketches
PS, AUSTRALIA From Erik Griswold Bolts, screws, paper, rubber strips,
and bits of cardboard are wedged, laced, and screwed between the piano
strings to create layers of interlocking microtonal scales. These
form a matrix of possibilities that are explored, sounded and discovered
in a series of improvised musical moments. Cross rhythms. Imperfect
memories. Bio: Currently based in Brisbane, Australia, American born
composer and pianist Erik Griswold has been a leading force in Australian
contemporary composition for prepared piano for many years. Splitting
his time between solo pursuits and his work with percussionist partner
Vanessa Tomlinson, his compositions have been presented across the
globe in the US, UK, China and other locations in Asia and Europe.
Altona Sketches was conceived following a lengthy session of prepared
piano improvisations delivered in support of a one-man juggling show
with Australia's highly regarded contemporary circus troupe Circa.
The album splits its sound palette between short and sweet excursions
into music boxes and prepared toy piano and lengthier explorations
of Griswold's unique prepared piano approaches.

Hecker, Tim
Norberg, Sweden
PS, AUSTRALIA Recorded at the Norberg Festival (Sweden) amidst the
mineshafts and cluttered buildings strewn throughout parts the city,
this 21 minute live piece summarizes much of what makes Tim Hecker's
music so vital and compelling. Adept at counter-pointing the most
ferocious of distorted platters with smooth beds of ambient sound
and potent melodic overtones, Tim Hecker creates music with a vast
depth. On Norberg, this depth seems almost endless, as layer upon
layer of sound are compiled into a swelling and all together visceral
oceanic sound wave. Recently touring Australia and New Zealand and
performing at ROOM40'S annual festival Open Frame, this CD comes on
the back of some incredible live performances in the Southern Hemisphere.
BIOGRAPHY: Tim Hecker is a Canadian-based musician and sound artist,
born in Vancouver. Since 1996, he has produced a range of audio works
for Mille Plateaux, ROOM40, Kranky, Alien8, Force Inc, Staalplaat,
and Fat Cat. His works have been described as "structured ambient",
"tectonic color plates" and "cathedral electronic music".
More to the point, he has focused on exploring the intersection of
noise, dissonance and melody, fostering an approach to song craft
that is both physical and emotive. The New York Times has described
his work as "foreboding, abstract pieces in which static and
sub-bass rumbles open up around slow moving notes and chords, like
fissures in the earth waiting to swallow them whole". His Radio
Amor was recognized as a key recording of 2003 by The Wire magazine.
His Harmony in Ultraviolet was in Pitchfork's Top 20 of key
recordings for 2006.

Atlas
PS, US Tim Hecker sent us a red cd-r demo ages ago underneath his
Jetone alias. We were instantly taken with the singular quality of
his music and weren't surprised to find his work consistently on the
top of the pile in all the genres it simultaneously straddles. With
releases for such mighty labels as Kranky, Mille Plateaux and Alien8,
Tim has honed his craft for more than a decade, focusing it to an
ultra-fine point in the last few years. "Atlas" is a vinyl-only
ep pressed in a short run 500 copies. "Atlas One" synthesizes
tides of the densest distortion to form sweepingly washed-out melodies
in a manner consistent with his most recent releases. Side two's piano-sourced
piece, "Atlas Two" feels almost breezy in comparison to
what one has come to expect from him. Rest assured, it's none the
less forceful for it.

lo-fi band, originally a one man show orchestrated by Makro Nyberg
with the intention of producing cinematic music inspired by the "power
of films and hypnotic quality of photography". Even though the
band has changed, now a four-sometimes-five member band with one hell

M83
Digital Shades Vol. 1 (ON SALE)
PS, UK Digital Shades Vol. 1 is the precursor to the fourth album
from M83, essentially the brainchild of Anthony Gonzalez, a resident
of Antibes, France. Just after the Before the Dawn Heals Us US tour,
Anthony decided to develop a musical direction already heard on some
earlier M83 tracks and he started to write and record a collection
of ambient works. Having long been a Krautrock and Eno fan this was
a kind of music that Anthony has always been familiar with. Recorded
primarily at his home studio with the assistance of Antoine Gaillet,
who had previously worked on Before the Dawn Heals Us, Anthony was
able to work without pressure, knowing he could work on the record
at his own time and pace. The idea of digital, relevant during all
the process (from creating the music to sharing it), gave him the
idea to call the project Digital Shades Vol.1, and to make the album
part of an ongoing series.

Os Mutantes
Divina Comedia Ou Ando Meio Desligado [re-issue]
PS, US "The Divine Comedy or I Walk Disconnected" Reissue
of their third album from 1970 which is considered their best by many.
ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Three Brazilian teenagers start a garage band.
They know nothing of music theory, have no equipment (they built their
own guitar pedals and used tin cans as cymbals), but lots and lots
of cannabis. Though the existence of Os Mutantes is in itself unremarkable,
what is mind-blowing is the top-notch quality of the music. These
three teens, Rita Lee (vocals), Sergio Baptista (guitar), and Arnaldo
Baptista (drums), while attempting to mimic their heroes in the states,
were able to surpass them. This was due to their inability to adequately
imitate (due to their geographic isolation), and the band's unfettered
creativity. For these reasons, their meld of otherworldly guitar noise,
crisp harmonies, and propulsive drumming found no equal among American
counterparts like the 13th Floor Elevators and the Electric Prunes.
While these bands just picked up where Sgt. Pepper's left off, Os
Mutantes made music that had no point of reference until almost 30
years later. This album is one of their best, and it showcases the
band's ability to morph genres into their own warped originality."

Revers Ouest
PS, AUSTRALIA "This is the story of a man marked by an image
of his childhood ..." Or perhaps is it the story of this woman
coming here to meet a beloved stranger, at the Grange-Auloup street?
or maybe their story?" - Sébastien Roux. Revers Ouest*
is a radio phonic work based on text fragments drawing a futuristic
and mental description of the Nantes city. It's an isolated utopist
vision of architecture, buildings made like concrete waves. The texts
are read by two actors, whose voices are used as a musical material
and digitally processed, becoming a ghostly trail of the characters
they represent. The piece, by mixing a fragmented story with heavily
processed acoustic sources, aims to intricate radio art genres like
documentary and hörspiel with more 'musical' forms such as electroacoustic
and contemporary classical music. The first version of the piece was
commissioned by Sonor festival and co-produced by La Muse en Circuit.
It was premiered on the 31/03/2007 in Lieu Unique (Nantes).

PS, UK These recordings of Erik Satie's symphonic drama 'Socrate'

boundaries of electronic music, delivers here 8 salvoes of monumental
bass, sparse dry beats and deep drones. Let it be heard: Scorn is

Steinbruchel
Opaque + Re
PS, AUSTRALIA In spring 2003 Steinbrüchel received an invitation
from the Swiss music festival, Taktlos" in Berne to contribute
a track for their listening room equipped with a surround 5.1 sound
system. During the two-day festival in November 2003 Steinbrüchel's
track entitled "opaque" was played back in cycle mode (among
tracks from various other artists). The listening room focused on
the experience of being able to listen to music in a very quiet and
large environment - unlikely to most home listening situations. Additionally
the possibility of working in surround gave the musicians a chance
to create very special audio sculptures in the space. The track "opaque"
by Steinbrüchel and five remixes is being released by the Australian
label room40. The remixes were created by the internationally well-known
artists Oren Ambarchi (AUS), Taylor Deupree (US), Frost (AUS), Toshiya
Tsunoda (JP) and Chris Abrahams (NZ). Each of the contributing artists
was chosen for his unique working method (Oren for his work with guitar,
Taylor for processed sounds, Frost guitar feedback, Toshiya for field
recordings and Chris for piano). To make the remixes more varied and
special, each artist received only three samples/soundfiles from the
original track, but none of the artists have received the same samples
or even have heard the original "opaque" track by Steinbrüchel
before the release of the CD.

Tenniscoats
Totemo Aimasho
PS, AUSTRALIA In essence Tokyo's Tenniscoats celebrate all that makes
song vital in our collective conscious. Matching emotive live performance
against delicately psychedelic folk songs, the duo of Saya and Takashi
Ueno (assisted by a plethora of floating members), create some of
the most compelling music currently emanating from Japan. On Totemo
Aimasho - loosely translated as Lets Meet Very Much - Tenniscoats
find themselves traveling across countries, scribing audio journal
entries from Australia, Japan and the UK. Recorded in all three countries
over 18 months, this edition bares witness to the divergent sonic
nature of the group. From the sweetly psychedelic 'Cacoy' through
to the ambience of 'Aurora Curtains' and the synthesized folk of 'To
Do First' this record paints an audio portrait of Tenniscoats vast
and evocative musical prowess. Produced by ROOM40 honcho Lawrence
English and co-produced by John Chantler and Saya, the title Totemo
Aimasho sums up so much about the process of it's creation - a record
of anticipated meetings, disparate spaces and excited exchanges.

Text Of Light
Rotterdam.1
PS, AUSTRALIA Recorded at the Rotterdam International Film Festival
in January 2005, this explosive piece from Text Of Light typifies
their abilities as a vivid freeform improvisational unit. Ranaldo
and Licht's measured guitar work sets a basis on which Kreiger's blaring
saxtronics, Barnes' percussive explorations and DJ Olive's swirling
turntable incursions can intertwine and augment one another. This
piece ebbs and flows, each of the players listening intently and guiding
the proceedings with disarmingly sublime yet focused intensity. Like
all their recorded works to date, this piece was delivered in tandem
with a live film projection - this interaction between 20th Century
abstract and experimental film and live improvised performance at
the very core of the unit. Text Of Light on Rotterdam 1 are: Alan
Licht: guitar Lee Ranaldo: guitar, electronics, Ulrich Krieger: sax,
sax-tronics, DJ Olive: turntables, powerbook, Tim Barnes: drums, percussion.

Varese, Edgard
Complete Works
PS, UK One of the founding fathers of modern music Edgard Varese,
was fifty years ago experimenting with sound collage and sampling
that are commonplace in today's popular music. Amongst the composers
who claimed him to be an influence were Harrison Birtwistle, Pierre
Boulez, John Cage, Morton Feldman, Luigi Nono, Karlheinz Stockhausen
and a teenage Frank Zappa with his profound effect on the latter so
much so that it can be heard throughout Zappa's work from the Mothers
Of Invention onwards. "The Complete Works Volume 1" is the
exact same record that turned Frank Zappa on! The recordings are savage
and beautiful and far ahead of their time; they have never previously

Bomber Command At War Volume 2
PS, UK CD41 is proud to present another unique archive audiobook CD,
Bomber Command at War 1939-45, featuring actuality and broadcast recordings
from the Second World War. The second volume of Bomber Command at
War features 75 minutes of rare audio material, most of it unheard
for more than 60 years. As well as first-person accounts of early
raids on Germany 1940-42 by Hampden and Wellington crews, the selection
also covers operations by heavy bomber types such as the Stirling
and Lancaster, and low-level strikes by Mosquitos and Beaufighters.
Notable missions include the famous Lancaster raids on Augsburg (1942)
and the 'Dambusters' attack on the Ruhr dams (1943), as well as the
pinpoint Mosquito strikes against Amiens jail and the Aarhus Gestapo
headquarters (both 1944). Other historic recordings include actuality
recordings during a Stirling raid on Dortmund in 1943, and a devastating
1000-plane strike on German positions near Caen in August 1944. The
disc also includes complete recordings of nightingales recorded in
a Surrey wood during a raid on Mannheim in 1943, and the moving 'An
Airman's Letter to his Mother' from 1940, read by John Gielgud. All
materials are authentic wartime recordings which have been carefully
digitally remastered for CD. The booklet includes detailed historical
notes by James Hayward. This unique CD is must for all military and
aviation historians, researchers and collectors of historic sound
recordings.

Try Me Out: Ballroom Beat Vol. Two: 20 Previously Uncomped Slices
of Prime British Beat 1964-66
PS, UK Welcome to Try Me Out, 20 tempting portions of prime British
beat previously uncomped on CD. Psychic Circle's second-ever release
was I Walk The Lonely Night, a collection of British beat rarities
which concentrated on the inexplicably overlooked, melodic pop side
of the genre. They subtitled the album Ballroom Beat Volume 1 to indicate
that the music contained within was a bit more all-embracing than
the hard-rocking R&B which emanated from smoky blues basements.
What we have here is volume two, full of artistes who typify Saturday
night in a provincial dance hall. You'll find a Scottish band who
only had records released in Germany, one of Brian Epstein's less
successful discoveries, two different early versions of King Crimson,
a Coronation Street actor trying his hand at pop, and the band that
would soon become Marmalade, plus, of course, a host of further delights.
Resistance is futile. Compiled by legendary psych musician and Psychic
Circle label-head, Nick Saloman (The Bevis Frond). Artists include:
Bern Elliott & The Klan, The Echo Sounds, The New York Public
Library, The League Of Gentlemen, The Rustiks, Marshall Scott Etc.,

response, so what could the label do but offer up another trayful
of sweet refreshment. Delve into the froth and you will find The Merseys
operating under a pseudonym, an obscure Cat Stevens-composed weird-out,
popsters Peter & Gordon showing that psychedelia had not passed
them by, beat legend Sean Buckley with a new name, an unknown Oak
version of a Deram gem, plus a host of similar pleasures. This is

Nothing Comes Easy: Basement Beat Volume 1
PS, UK Over the past 20 years there have been countless compilations

have appeared several times already. This might give the impression

that the gushing torrent of undiscovered pure R&B frenzy has now
been reduced to a babbling country brook, but if you dig deep enough,
there are still some untapped reserves of top quality beat waiting
to be unearthed. Nothing Comes Easy is a compilation of 20 such gems,
previously uncomped on CD. Some of these bands may be familiar to
you as they have appeared on other collections of this genre, some
have never been comped until now. Artists include: The UK Bonds, The

Airport Symphony
PS, AUSTRALIA An incredible 2CD housed in a metal box with sash -
a true work of art. Alain De Botton suggests in his book 'The Art
Of Travel', the act of transit between social, cultural and geographic
circumstance is far more than mere bodily movement. Language, architecture,
food, gesture, landscape and sound all play a part in travel and ultimately
contribute to the sensations of excitement, exoticism, disorientation
and even fear that occupy the daily life of the traveler. At points
of departure and arrival on these journeys increasingly lies an airport.
Like business hotels across the globe, the airport acts as a uniform
presence - rotating gates, the clunk of baggage, the vague chatter
of tourist and traveler alike and the occasional interruption of muffled
announcements. Vast halls echoing with the shifting of bodies intent
on exodus and return. As Socrates wrote, 'Man must rise above the
Earth - to the top of the atmosphere and beyond - for only thus will
he fully understand the world in which he lives [sic]'. Indeed, as
the choreography of pre-flight checks is conducted following the gentle
rock of the plane leaving the air bridge to a soundtrack of gentle
pressurized drone and air conditioned hiss, a meditation commences.
This moment of consideration is heightened, as the reflected sound
of the engines scorching the tarmac surface is vacuumed into the void
of open air and as the plane leaves the earth there is (in every traveller
no matter how still experienced) a sense of silent awe at the marvels
of the physics of flight. Airport Symphony, commissioned by the Queensland
Music Festival and Brisbane Airport Corporation, documents and synthesizes
the experiences of travel. Each piece represents a personal meditation
on aspects of travel in the modern age and suggests ways in which
we control, augment and ultimately exists in a time where almost no
part of the face of the planet is inaccessible. Each of the pieces
features a source recording made in and around Brisbane Airport between
March and June 2007 -in a raw form or transformed by processing. Audio
diary entries cataloguing the epic possibilities of flight, aero-passage
and human bodies in motion and even at rest. Lawrence English, June
2007. All field recordings by Lawrence English. FEATURING WORKS BY:

Volcano The Bear
Amidst the Noise & Twigs
PS, US The follow-up to the critically acclaimed Classic Erasmus Fusion
album from VTB. Who knew that amidst the noise and the twigs there
was music, sweet, sweet music?! As usual, our heroes are found keeping
things stripped to the bone trumpet, but dripping with a juicy, melodic
marrow. The record pours slowly and resolutely like a folk-psych dream
urn, loaded with full metal banjoes; crumhorns at 12 O'clock, and
autoharps at defcon 5.The experimentalism is this time couched in
shifting tides of self-spun acidic harvest ballads that noisily well
up into proto-Kraut thrums and tribal night trips around the pyre.
A rural, squelchy, DIY delicacy which stinks of occidental embouchure
so crystal crisp that every skkrrrr, pphaaapph and brrruuuummmm resonates
like a small, sound-specific god, intertwined with beautifully skewed
notes, voices and rhythms. Amidst The Noise And Twigs plays like a
recently discovered field recording of some obscured Celtic clan who
accidentally stumbled onto psychedelia 600 years ahead of its time.
These pipers truly rock the gates of dawn. First edition of 1,000
copies packaged in full color book-bound cases with an eight page

Willits, Christopher
Plants And Hearts
PS, AUSTRALIA Christopher Willits is a ceaseless creative force focused
on teasing out the most from his instruments of choice - the guitar.
With Plants + Hearts, he sets out on a divergent exploration into
the tonal qualities of guitar, rendering out a composition that references
in equal doses the minimal harmonic shifts of Terry Riley and the
phasing works of Steve Reich. Incorporating 4hz isochronic pulses
and panning at the same frequency, this work encourages for formation
of 4hz brainwave patterns associated with states of meditation, deep
relaxation, enhanced creativity, light sleep and lucid dreaming. Using
a MS (mid side) recording of guitar made by Ryan Kleeman at UMKC,
the unique mixing technique of panning the cardioid M of the M-S array
left and right four times at one second intervals alters spatial cues,
and phase relationships. WARNING: this recording may cause dizziness
and an sense of vertigo. It is not advised to drive while listening
to this music. From Willits "I've always wanted to release a
pure droning guitar piece and equally wanted to incorporate 4hz pulses
and panning into something long form. These long drones, were recorded
MS giving me some great stuff to experiment with, and allowed me blend
these concepts in an unusual way."

of delay systems, echoed reverberations and transformational sound.
On For Those Who Hear Actual Voices, he sifts through a series of
singular sound moments, dropping them into oceans of delay, washing
them out in a raw, yet focused way that suggests an understanding
of spatial environments. For Those Who Hear Actual Voices was created
intermittently between November 03 and February 04 in Room L208 of

PS, US 4 BONJOUR'S PARTIES is a seven member strong ensemble from
Tokyo, Japan. Their debut full-length release, "Pigments Drift
Down To The Brook", with it's expansive, chamber-music approach
to song structure and production, hints at modern risk-takers Architecture
In Helsinki and The Arcade Fire. Alternating between sweet and majestic,
the combination of male and female vocals, sung both in English and
Japanese, is an aural wonder. Keyboards and wind instruments lay on
top of a bed of dream-rock guitar, bass, and drums, creating moments
of 60's guitar pop, Neu inspired repetition, and modern electronics,
all within the same expansive track. "Pigments Drift Down To
The Brook" marks 4 Bonjour's Parties as a band that deserves

Bodies Of Water
Ears Will Pop & Eyes Will Blink (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE DECEMBER
4TH)
PS, US BODIES OF WATER started in DAVID METCALF and MEREDITH ARTHUR'S
closet. They were newly married and lived in a very small house. The
closet was the only place to put the computer that they used for recording.
They eventually formed a musical group to play David's songs. Meredith
figured out the piano, and their friends Kyle Gladden and Jessie Conklin
learned to play the bass and drums, respectively. In the ensuing years,
the four have learned to deftly spin those threads which inevitably
weave their way through every Bodies of Water song: ebullient group
singing, melodic invention, thundering polyrhythms, and sublime dramatic
tension. "Ears Will Pop & Eyes Will Blink" is their
first full-length record, and the first release from the band's own
THOUSAND TONGUES label. The songs stray from verse-chorus structure
but are engaging and memorably crafted, drawing on an admixture of
traditions; the transcendent intensity of gospel, brutish gusto of
punk rocking, earnest idiosyncrasy of American folk, sonic inclusiveness
of tropicalia, planned jamming of prog, and the sincere bombast of
musical theatre. These songs can be likened to a sort of emotional
topiary; an unruly living mess lent its shape by the psychic framework
around which it grows. Since its inception Bodies of Water have added
an auxiliary corps of musicians and when playing in L.A. their ranks
can swell to as many as 11; hitting, blaring, strumming and bowing
away. The four core members' vocal synchronicity remains the group's
hallmark. Their calls, responses, shouts and harmonies ride above
and around a retaining wall of sound in a fleeting burst of neo-tent
revival immediacy.

By The End Of Tonight/Tera Melos
Complex Full of Phantoms (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE DECEMBER 4TH)
PS, US Coming off the heels of the scarcely limited 3" CD series
- and a full two years after the release of their debut album - BY
THE END OF TONIGHT has finally dropped the anvil of badass on us with
six new jams. In the two years since the release of their brilliant
"A Tribute To Tigers", BTEOT have toured almost non-stop,
playing every rock club, living room (or even barn) that would have
them. Their relentlessness has paid off, as their half of this split
album with good friends and like-minded power jammers TERA MELOS is
far and away their most accomplished work to date. Not to be outdone,
Sacramento's Tera Melos have also been on the road more than they've
been home this year, touring with the likes of Fall of Troy and Horse
the Band. Their frantic, absurdly complex songs are the perfect compliment
to By the End of Tonight's darker, more sinister instrumental metal.
Though both bands play a hyper-catchy, addictive form of spastic punk,
Tera Melos brings to mind a hybrid of fellow Sacramento speed freaks
Hella and Cap'n Jazz, while BTEOT draws an unfathomable arc between
Blink 182 and The Jesus Lizard. The combination makes this by far
the strongest release to date from either band.

Eux Autres
Cold City (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE DECEMBER 4TH)
PS, US Eux Autres (pronounced ooz-oh-tra), a Portland-based duo, plays
pop music. The band consists of brother and sister Heather and Nicholas
Larimer. Heather plays drums, Nicholas plays guitar, and they both
sing. Practices frequently devolve into shoving matches. Eux Autres
write compact songs with sparse instrumentation. Their music has been
unfairly described as "fun." But while the surface of the
songs might seem nonchalant, the lyrics offer skewed observations
and fierce barbs. Most of their songs are about a) military history
b) being "done wrong" or c) sports. Sadly, Eux Autres are
the only people who notice this. The band sounds like the unrequited

Hedberg, Johan
5-spars EP (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE DECEMBER 4TH)
PS, SWEDEN Labrador proudly presents the solo debut from Johan Hedberg
of Suburban Kids with Biblical Names. "5-spårs EP"
(mean "Five track EP" in Swedish) is nothing less than brilliant
- a splendid mix of electronica, Tropicalia and pop. Welcome to the
sound of a true pop genius. In the summer of 2007 Johan Hedberg bought
a computer with an installment plan. This new gear gave him inspiration
to do some productions on his own. With the motto "fast production
and no turning back" Johan's way of working is quite the opposite
of the one of Suburban Kids with Biblical Names. The latter is famous
for re-recording, re-writing, re-making and polishing their songs
over and over again before they're finished. Surprisingly or not,
the fast way of making art works perfectly for his solo productions.
"5-spårs EP" will be released in a limited edition

words of Kelis and Andre 3000's "Millionaire". An homage

HEY WILLPOWER sings it like he means it; a postmodern take on a love
gone awry. Inspired by real life events, and masterpieces like "You
Keep Me Hangin' On" and "Walk On By", it's a story
everyone can understand. Whether it's the beat of the snare that happened
to be there, the Yamaha "Bar Mitzvah Keyboard" on which
Will plays the lead riff, or the vocal choir that catapults the simple
phrase in the chorus "Let You Go" straight into your heart,
there's something for anyone who has felt the highest of highs, and

Lets Go Naked
Insides (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE DECEMBER 4TH)
PS, UK This is 16 track career retrospective compiles singles, selected
album tracks, unreleased gems and 2 new tracks from Brisbane's Lets
Go Naked. Re-mastered and first time on CD. John Peel favorites. Band
now reformed, writing and recording new material for 2008 release
- launch gigs in Brisbane and Sydney. Band contains well known Brisbane
TV celebrity, news anchor man Andrew Lofthouse and ex The Go Betweens
John Wilsteed. Let's Go Naked had an initial burst of activity in
the eighties with the release of the album "Everything"
on Sydney's Waterfront Records. This album found Let's Go Naked as
exponents of the Brisbane sound, with an angular, driven guitar style,
incorporating keyboard sounds for certain tracks. Think the Go Betweens
early records. The "Three Limbs" single on Trust Records
then found Let's Go Naked emerging with their own refreshing sound.
This track became a favourite of the late John Peel on his BBC shows
bringing Lets Go Naked to a wider audience. The late eighties and
nineties found Let's Go Naked exploring this sound, recording intermittently,
including the single "Sometimes"; finding perfect moments
and moving on to the next one. The new century seen renewed interest
in Let's Go Naked, initially prompting the re-mixing of a few lost
gems and ultimately writing and recording again. Two recent new tracks
appear on this retrospective and find the band in rude form. Recording
is well under way on a new album for 2008 release. October 2007 saw
a return to the stage at The Zoo in Brisbane for a well received re-union
show. Lets Go Naked are Murray Power (vocals, guitar), Andrew Lofthouse
(bass guitar, backing vocals and keyboards), Nick Patterson (drums
and backing vocals) and ex Go Between John Wilsteed (guitars). Rosalinda
McGovern, Martin Thompson, Steve McKensie and Anthony Perrott have
also been members and contribute to the retrospective CD.

PS, US "Make the Dead Come" is a limited edition mini-album
that MINUS STORY created as a creative outlet in the middle of making
their upcoming full-length "My Ion Truss" (due out June
19, 2007). In between recording sessions for "My Ion Truss"
with producer JOHN CONGLETON (THE POLYPHONIC SPREE, EXPLOSIONS IN
THE SKY) at Electrical Audio and Low Key, the band self-recorded "Make
the Dead Come" on their 8-track in Kansas City. A thematic continuation
and resolution of the death/ghost songs from their last two full-lengths
"No Rest For Ghosts" and "The Captain Is Dead Let the
Drum Corpse Dance, Make the Dead Come" is a darker and scarier
journey with the group of Boonville, MS natives. On it, they rejoice
in their trademark intuitive & distorted self-recorded style,
which they've warmly named the Wall of Crap. This is their first recording
with new band member Lucas Oswald, who contributes hammer dulcimer

BaryoGenesis (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE DECEMBER 11TH)
PS, POLAND From KK NULL- "The album opens up with the sound of
insects & birds which I recorded live at wetland in Kakadu National
park in Australia, that symbolizes organic life/organism (including
our human bodies) composed of baryons. Then, abstract electronic noise
overlaps them and takes you into a journey through deep inner and
far outer spaces at any scales. However, you don't have to care about
what I say here, I just hope this music inspires you as much as it
does myself, and enjoy with your open mind and free imagination!!

some improvised processing, playing a synthesizer and my voice on
top of that."

Alison Statton (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE DECEMBER 4TH)
PS, US The title pays homage to the lovely young Welsh girl who fronted
Young Marble Giants & Weekend. The songs pay
homage to failed relationships & the uncertainty of youth via
a batch of intelligently informed compositions; one that should appease
fans of Jens Lekman, Orange Juice & the early Belle & Sebastian
records. Female vocals float through the back drops as trumpets &
saxophones spurt lost Stax lines, a glockenspiel chimes, guitars feedback,
drums flail & a young man sings sweetly about all the things young
men should sing sweetly about. Alison Statton confirms Andrew Churchman's
position as top-notch modern songwriter. His words & themes flirt
as much with the films of Truffaut as they do with Jonathan Richman's
earnestness & the Go-Betweens'golden days of mellifluous pop truisms.

The Green Boat (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE DECEMBER 11TH)
PS, UK 2007 has been the busiest year yet for the artists' co-operative
Make Mine Music with eight releases so far including full-length albums
by Epic45, Library Tapes and All Sides. The latest name to be added
to the Make Mine Music roster is Planivaar whose debut release for
the label is the mini-album "The Green Boat". Planivaar
began in 2005 as the experimental side project of artist Mark Lippett.
There is no set approach but generally the music blends atmospheric
guitar and keyboard with samples and found sounds. The first album,
"The Orange Balloon", was released on net label Earth Monkey
Productions in 2005, followed by the CD album "The Yellow Square"
on Split Femur Recordings earlier this year. 2007 also marked the
live debut of Planivaar where the performances were partially improvised
sets of new music. "The Green Boat" is based on one of these
concerts with added samples and overdubs. A thirty-minute drifting
performance split into five connected pieces, the music on "The
Green Boat" was inspired by late night conversations at a time
when it would be wise to go to sleep.

Randomnumber
Modern Ambivalence (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE DECEMBER 18TH)
PS, JAPAN Modern Ambivalence is the fourth album by Leeds long standing
proponent of electronic music, RandomNumber. Modern Ambivalence is
the latest incarnation of an evolving style which has taken shape
over the past eight or so years which flowered from early noise experiments
that gave way to a tentative and primitive electronica that was released
on the now defunct, yet legendary CDR label, Fencing Flatworm. Since
these early digital musings Robson's music has charted a course of
increasing melody and of rhythmical complication with releases for
California's Rocket Racer 2002's Understand Your Date & Time of
Nowhere and Mogwai's Rock Action 2001's NME Dance single of the Week
"The Fact That I Did" EP, Towards The Forlorn Society (2003)
for Catmobile Records took the trademark sound to it's limit with
it's brittle and unsettling mix of rhythmic obfuscation and winter
smeared synth impressionism that tested the boundaries of home brewed
electronic music. During this period, other more accessible EPs and
mixes appeared for labels as diverse as Vacuous Pop and Irritant (who
gave homes to early releases by Kid606, Knifehandchop and Printed
Circuit). Shows with the likes of I Am Robot & Proud, Printed
Circuit, Kid 606 and Cex would see the randomNumber live performance
taken across the waters to France, USA, Mexico and Canada throughout
the whole 2002 to 2004 period and would represent Robson's most prolific
period of international touring as a solo artist. The tensions of
these awkward, yet compelling mid-period pieces soon gave way to a
more confident and relaxed sound that was no less compromising in
it's desire to chart the dark and melancholic landscape of contemporary
electronica, but presented a more coherent and accessible sound that
appealed to a wider audience. Golden Acre Sleeps (Highpoint Lowlife)
(2006) ushers in the dawn of a Post-Electronica era of scene fragmentation
and ghettoisation with bedroom producers increasingly marginalized
into obscurity or MP3 mediocrity, against this backdrop, Golden Acre
comes across as a breath of fresh air from the very grassroots of
the scene. Throughout this recent period, the randomNumber sound continues
to develop, as Golden Acre was being released to a world increasingly
enthralled by the new breed of over confident pretty boys with guitars,
giddy on corporate expense accounts, Robson continues to be a credible
live performer at both rock and electronic shows, playing with the
likes of Thee More Shallows, Pram, Clark, A Silver Mount Zion, Christ
and Bracken to name a few, showcasing material from the Modern Ambivalence
sessions.

BHOB RAINEY, and MICK ROSSI). A creative and accomplished jazz guitarist,

Society of Rockets, The
Our Paths Related [LP vinyl & album download ticket] (DELAYED,
PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE DECEMBER 27TH)
PS, US And away we go... Part 70s fuzz-soul, part bleary-eyed shoegaze,
part California sunshine-pop, the Society of Rockets' experiment machine
chugs on, devouring all parts and functions in its wake and spitting
out an ever-widening array of dizzying psych-rock gems. The latest
full-length release in a long line of left-turns and surprises, "Our
Paths Related" is a cosmo-tour of potentialities, a series of
violent hybrids and stylistic feints, rooted heavily in the often
(and unjustly) ignored black rock wing of psychedelia: early Funkadelic,
Muddy Waters' "Electric Mud", Chains and Black Exhaust.
But this is just the framework, the launching pad - a jumping off
point to which other systems and avenues can be joined and explored.
The sonic experiments of the album play against each other, each element
running headlong into the others... At this point in the band's career
(both in its previous incarnation as the Shimmer Kids Underpop Association
and on previous albums "Sunset Homes" and "Where the
Grass Grows Black"), the 10-?member strong collective has rambled
across a wide swathe of American musical territory, from quiet country-tinged
balladry to ceiling-shattering garage rock, and, much like similarly
restless heroes Neil Hagerty and Jason Pierce, the band continues
to push the boundaries of their playing in an effort to find more
room to grow. With its energetic wall of sound and kaleidoscopic backdrop
of experimental films, combining equal parts distorted guitars, three-part
harmonies, and Stax-Volt horns The SOR deliver the record-collector's
version of a raucous Sunday church service. Hallelujah, and welcome
to the congregation.

The Ghost (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE DECEMBER 4TH)
PS, US A LIMITED NUMBER OF RECENTLY UNEARTHED COPIES OF THIS LONG-UNAVAILABLE,
SOUGHT-AFTER RELEASE. "The Ghost" is a dark affair. As a
matter of content, its themes are bleak, on the verge of total blackness.
Loneliness, alienation, desperation, and dark, anxious nights. As
a matter of atmosphere, the album is even darker. Surface noise has
never been so important to a record's mood and tone. Yes, it sounds
like it was recorded on a highway, but this is a dark fucking highway
at a lonely, desperate hour and the only set of keys you have are
those to the car that won't take you any closer to home. It's dead
and you're scared and totally alone. It's just such an occasion that
JASON MOLINA sings and plays of in a roundabout way on "The Ghost".
Recorded in one day direct to Jason's boom box with the tiny little
microphone, this brand new batch of songs was written in a very short
period in the early months of 1999. For Jason, fidelity was never
an issue, in fact it was a tool. The boom box's inefficient battery-powered
motor is just as integral to the recording as the vocal and guitar
performance that occurred that February afternoon in Jason's room
on his day off of work. This recording may be noisy but it is not
a demo. It was originally made available in limited quantities-to
be sold on the SONGS: OHIA tour of the East Coast with Drunk in the
Spring of 1999 and the European tour in the early Summer 1999, however
Secretly Canadian recently discovered enough parts of this release
to resurrect it one more time.

Protection Spells (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE DECEMBER 4TH)
PS, US A LIMITED NUMBER OF RECENTLY UNEARTHED COPIES OF THIS LONG-UNAVAILABLE,
SOUGHT-AFTER RELEASE. "The Protection Spells" is a collection
of songs recorded over a period of several SONGS: OHIA tours. Presented
here are nine entirely improvised pieces. The approach to these songs
involved no rehearsals, no second takes, no additions and no going
back. What you have here are songs that just happened in real time.
The many musicians on these recordings were friends, bandmates, and,
at times, total strangers. I have long hoped to offer the listener
a chance to have some of these great accidents on record. It is a
direct look at my songwriting process, only a little more risky, and
nobody has any idea what direction we are going until we all start
working on it together. I think that the years of improvised music
I played in the past helped to strengthen the risk-taking with these
songs. Here the goal was to still have basic songs without falling
into long freak-out noise experiments, saving that kind of exploration
for live settings. You will notice the appearances and disappearances
of ideas that could never be recreated, not that they are all brilliant,
but they are certainly not forced. The seemingly arbitrary moments
of strange repetition the lyrics, the clear lack of a preconceived
system of established song parts, all are the marks of improvised
songwriting. Since even the singing had no idea what the floorplan
of the song was to be, there were some unanticipated troubles and
some shy steps taken, but I have preserved these mappings of the dangerous
musical byroads that Songs: Ohia has always depended on. I hope you
enjoy this. -Jason Molina, July 10,2000

Could a single person use her voice to represent many? "Tout
Seul dans la Forêt en Plein Jour, Avez-Vous Peur?" (Alone
in the forest in the middle of the day, are you scared? in English.
Tout Seul for short) is the new record by WOELV. It is a record about
present times, but may very well be about what has happened in the
past and what might just happen again in the future. The music itself
is dark and insistent. It is in a bad mood, yet it still has some
hope left in its vocal chords that gives it its spine. The music could
sound naughty and too difficult at first, but really it wants to be
like a nurturing force that very softly asks the questions we would
not want
