Parasol New Arrivals • March 27, 2007

Howdy all,

Yes sir, it’s Tuesday again and lucky for us, the weather couldn’t be nicer. The doors are wide open, there’s a cool breeze blowing through and Spicoli has informed us that he’s looking for some tasty waves but that dreaded Mr. Hand is always getting in the way.

In other news, Parasol mascot, Oh Sheila, has gone AWOL for the past few days. It’s sad to come to work in the morning and not have the remains of Sheila’s post Monday work antics scattered throughout the office. So Sheila, if you’re on line somewhere nibbling on some garbage and reading this update, please drop us a line and let us know you are all right.

All right, we’re done yucking it up so let’s get down to business, shall we? Our pal Kevin from the Coco B’s mailed us a copy of their new record and let me tell you, they’re going to be a force to be reckoned with. As soon as they find a home for this new record, we’ll make sure to send the smoke signals your way.

Be certain to familiarize your ears with the new offerings from The Field, Hail Social, The Ponys and Colin Blunstone’s “One Year” CD reissue. Give us a holler soon, friends.

Be good,

Royal/Paul

Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week

The Ponys "Turn Out The Lights" CD $11.50 (Matador)
We're so blown away by this new Ponys album that we felt we had to share our blownawayness with you possible future blownawayees... Zoom-rockin' cosmic-garage retro-tude demands intake of import lagers or hallucinogens or some combination thereof!
A classic twin-guitar rock band fronted by the impassioned vocals of Jered Gummere, The Ponys' songwriting range from psych jams to pounding rockers to twisted singer-songwriter material, evoking influences from Television and Dream Syndicate to The Only Ones and The Jesus and Marychain. Turn The Lights Out is denser, noisier and more fucked-up than its two predecessors, and sounds bigger to boot. The complex interplay between the guitars and the reverb-drenched vox and keys emerges more effectively than ever before in Agnello's massive production. Fuckin' A.

Audience
Self-Titled
PS, US AUDIENCE's sound was a masterful blend of different musical styles, such as rock, folk, jazz, and blues. Jethro Tull immediately leaps to mind, particularly for the band's use of flute. This 1969 self-titled debut, which featured an excellent use of guitar and equally high-quality flute, sax and clarinet playing, not to mention the distinctive of voice of HOWARD WERTH , and their simple, but effective arrangements, in a period when pomp prog rock reigned supreme. "Maiden's Cry," brings to mind "Stairway To Heaven," but was actually written two years before the Zeppelin-penned opus.

Aus
Curveland
PS, US Yasuhiko Fukuzono from Tokyo, Japan, & this is his 5th solo album. This shows a sensitive side to his production & slots in perfectly to the Moteer core sound. Tempered glitches & subtle melodies are draped w/ ethereal pads & utterly charming female vocals, & it comes as little surprise to hear that the musician moonlights as a soundtrack producer. Bright-eyed homespun sentiment is what makes this so hard to forget.

PS, US Here he surpasses all experience & expectation w/ infinite catchy hooks, lazy synths, romantic vocals, & so many shimmering techno-colors, it'll make your eyes squint in the sunshine. Bosetti, Alessandro
Her Name
PS, US A record founded on meetings and voices. Italian composer & sound artist Bosetti toured extensively throughout Europe, China, Japan, & the US, performing these pieces. During the performances he sat, with a computer sitting on a table next to him, his voice at the aural focus, coming from his mouth in the middle of his face, he translated the recorded voices of the people he's met along the way. Those voices appear in this recording. However, many more things also appear: guitar, piano, harmonium, double bass, trumpet, electronics, cello and field recordings combine in small ensembles and reconstructed jazz groups to create songs (yes, really!) that take the listener on an amazing trip around this world and others. Recorded in Amsterdam, Sangha, Berlin, Milano, and Baltimore and featuring a full cast of guest musicians and vocalists such as Ernst Karel, Koen Nutters, Morten J. Olsen, Ana Djangouno Dolo, Ibe, Adachi Tomomi, Mariangela Tinelli, Paul Glazer, Ayako Fukunaga, Chico Mello, Fernanda Farah and Die Maulwerker, "Her Name" is a powerful record about the collective voice, cohesively honed into an amazing listening experience that speaks to everyone. Beautiful recordings craftfully mixed & mastered. Released in edition of 500, packaged in oversized die cut wallet designed by Jim Schoenecker.

Carlberg, Pelle
In A Nutshell
PS, SWEDEN Pelle Carlberg, former lead singer of Edson, is back with a brilliant new album. In a nutshell is full of his characteristic sharp, wry humor and heartfelt folk-pop. Carlberg writes equally catchy and intimate pop songs with an ease rarely seen since Belle & Sebastians early years. Lovely, lovely, lovely. Simultaneously heartwarming and heartbreaking "AMPLIFIER MAGAZINE It's all too easy to relate to, making for a sobering end to a very enjoyable record. STYLUS Everything. Now! is an earnest pop album made to withstand, cranks, slings and arrows - and designed to dug up and truly dug by devotees of classic songcraft. MAGNET What makes Carlberg's music so fun goes beyond the humor to include the lovable way he presents his songs, blending soft guitars with mellow harmonies and romantic piano parts. Everything. Now! is a tireless album, each song as refreshing and rejuvenating as the last. "FENSE POST "Everything. Now! Is full of gentle, melodic, pensive pop that bands like The Smiths and The Go-Betweens did so well and Mr. Carlberg is carrying the torch for bands like those." DAGGER MAGAZINE "For whatever reason, records that reflect the recordmaker have always been rare, and Carlberg confesses just enough to make this a beautiful, remarkably human piece of work." HYBRID MAGAZINE" "If more twee acts balanced wit, bile, and heart like this track does, they wouldn't bore their detractors off of so many balconies. " PITCHFORK MEDIA Pelle Carlberg had a good, or at least exciting, 2006. He's played for 5000 devoted fans in Indonesia, toured Europe twice, released his solo debut in most countries on earth and played sold out venues in Hong Kong and Taiwan. With the release of this lovely little album 2007 has every chance of being even better. Or, hopefully not better but only more exciting. "If I ever get happy my songs will start to suck" Pelle Carlberg.

Damon
Song of a Gypsy (LP + 7")
PS, SPAIN Repressed on vinyl. "Damon. This is the artistic name of David Del Conte, a genius American gypsy musician who is responsible for probably the rarest and most sought-after psychedelic music album of all time. We're talking about his debut album, Song of a Gypsy, which was originally released in 1969. This album has a totally unique sound, with the 'crooner-like' voice of Damon, the omnipresent melodic fuzz guitar of Charlie Carey and truly atmospheric melodies. Guerseen is very proud to be able to re-release Song of a Gypsy on vinyl format. This will come with the rarer gatefold cover (there were two original pressings, one in single cover and one in gatefold, with different artwork). This fabulous vinyl production comes with an extra 33rpm EP including the four tracks that were released on their two bloody rare singles, including an insert with photos and liner-notes, making this a very special release if all previous things weren't enough."

Drawing Voices

PS, US The 20th Century painter Francis Bacon is continuously cited for his remark, "Painting is the projection on canvas of one's own nervous system." The project Drawing Voices attempts to expose the nervous system through audio, video, and meta-technologies. Through the amplification of marks being made while drawing or writing, experiments are set up to reveal the potential of these sounds to communicate. This CD includes sounds from various Drawing Voices sessions used in collaboration with musician/artist Aaron Turner.

Evripidis And His Tragedies
Self-Titled
PS, SPAIN This is the first sign that Evripidis and His Tragedies are a truly unique band and have developed their own style. In Evripidis' song writing there is space for pre-Beatles pop as heard on "Ru Ru I'd love to...", to the sinister and grotesque "Transylvania, Some nights are sleepless" and "Cause I shall rise again", the picaresque cabaret "Red is the sky above the harbour" and romanticism "I want to be there", "Long-Lasting Lovers" or "Straydog" and also singles as "It's June Again!" and "Gregory (we're coming out in the light)". Conceptually, Evripidis use polarity (reality and fantasy, romanticism and sexual tension, self-parody and idealisation, catastrophe and comedy) to create a work guided by humour and his flirtation with daily tragicomedies. The result is an album that is personal, daring, original and ambitious.

Fall, The
Post-TLC Reformation! [enhanced]
PS, US New album of bristling genius from marble-mouth overlord Mark E. Smith and his 45th? incarnation of The Fall. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "The new Fall ("Fall #45" or something) and their new album (don't even try to count them) is filled with new life, new ideas, and every reason the cult needs to keep worshiping this fickle, inconsiderate, and ungracious band... Even if [Mark E. Smith] doesn't care about fans, in some strange way he cares about The Fall." (David Jeffries)

Field, The
From Here We Go Sublime
PS, GERMANY Pitchfork loved it, 9.0 style, Parasol is intrigued, Gooom 2005-style. This is the debut full-length release by Stockholm's own Axel Willner aka The Field. Willner joined the Kompakt family back in 2005 with the release of his cherished 12" debut Things Keep Falling Down, and he's been garnering non-stop attention ever since. His adoration for Kompakt co-owner Wolfgang Voigt's GAS and M:I:5 projects from the '90s and the shoegazer rock of Slowdive and My Bloody Valentine brought forward a new fusion of ambient and techno that sounds wholly original and accomplished -- post-pop ambient anyone?

Foxx, John/Louis Gordon
Sideways
PS, UK John Foxx and electro DJ Louis Gordon release Sideways, their fifth album since meeting up just over 10 years ago. The album brings together sci-fi-themed electronic pop songs with trash psychedelia and film music to create the pair's most adventurous recordings to date. In fact, over 25 years after launching his solo career with the minimalist electro pop of Metamatic, Foxx has been enjoying a recent renaissance. In addition to the critically acclaimed From Trash, Foxx brought to life his Tiny Colour Movies album with a stunning performance at the Brighton Film Festival and continued his long-term Cathedral Oceans project with rare screenings at other UK film festivals. He also started work on various collaborative projects with Robin Guthrie (ex-Cocteau Twins) and the actor Vincent Gallo, which are due for release later in 2007. According to Foxx, Sideways explores his fascination with 'things that have all been considered at one time or another as trash - science fiction, TV, B-movies, synthesizers, psychedelia, pop music, comics - all the stuff I love!'

Green
PS, US One of the most unjustly neglected albums of its time, this superb collection of snappy psychedelic rock from Texas first appeared in 1969 on the Atco label and makes its long-overdue CD debut here, complete with four previously unheard pre-album demos. A brilliant mixture of raw guitar, subtle horns and catchy songwriting, the album comes across as a delightfully idiosyncratic amalgam of The Beatles, The Zombies and Buffalo Springfield, making it a must-have for fans of classic '60s psychedelia.

Modern Love & Death
PS, US Second album by Philadelphia's Hail Social. Some might say its sounds a little Goth with groove, like the Cures Head on The Door or power-wave like Duran Duran Seven & the Ragged Tiger. Hearts Of Black Science
The Ghost You Left Behind
PS, UK From Gothenburg, Sweden comes the latest Scandinavian pop phenomenon Hearts of Black Science. Formed by Daniel Änghede and Tomas Almgren, Hearts of Black Science set up a studio within an abandoned subterranean power plant outside Gothenburg. Isolated from the outside world, they experimented and developed their sound - melancholic and dark pop melodies, yet also uplifting and positive, not afraid to be inspired by a broad range of styles, gothic and metal, shoegaze and eighties pop. In 2006 the band released an two EPs that sold out in just 2 months, and got over 100,000 hits on MySpace. 'The Ghost You Left Behind' is the glorious culmination of those months of isolation - this collection of songs is all that's great about Scandinavian pop, sounding completely fresh. References: mixing up a bit of Doves, some Ladytron, a smattering of Mew and maybe M83 would be a good start, but there's a darker side as well, Depeche Mode covered by Air, or The Killers covered by Ulrich Schnauss.

Hoyem, Sivert & The Volunteers
Exiles
PS, NORWAY Second solo album from Madrugada vocalist Sivert Høyem and his band The Volunteers. One of modern Norwegian rock royalty's most beloved and compelling vocalists, Madugada frontman Sivert Høyem renders his solo albums within a shadowy rock noir. With Exiles he calls upon his "Arctic cowboy music and North Star blues" muse and his backing band The Volunteers, more Leonard Cohen than Nick Cave, extra-large arrangements with more folksy elements shaded in... The seedy underbelly's still there, but it's less about day job Madrugada's desolate blues bombast and more about pop's purple mountain majesties. Heroic rock epics through and through, with an astounding sense of intimacy, perhaps it's all the minor key magic? Highly recommended.

Klaxons
Myths of the Near Future (ON SALE)
PS, US 2007 debut from this hotly-tipped underground British rock band, who have been dubbed the leaders and innovators of the 'New Rave'/'Flourescent Rock' scene. 2007 could be Klaxons' year, with their stew of cosmic imagery, avant-garde awareness, dizzy melodies and raging energy are set to lead the way forward. After exploding on the scene in a dayglo burst of punk riffs, hedonism & classic Brit art school conceptual cheek, they return w/their debut album looking to prove they're more than just a flash in the art damaged new new wave pan. 11 tracks rocket by in 35 mins w/more energy than high explosives. A raw manifesto that will bemuse oldsters & invigorate fans. NME scores this "9/10" while ALL MUSIC GUIDE drops names: "Their sound is closer to dance-punk than revamped Madchester giddiness, more like Bloc Party before they got very, very serious than the Happy Mondays or Stone Roses..."

LCD Soundsystem
Sound of Silver (ON SALE)
PS, US New album. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Compared to the first LCD Soundsystem album, Sound of Silver is less silly, funnier, less messy, sleeker, less rowdy, more fun, less distanced, more touching. It is just as linked to James Murphy's record collection, with traces of post-punk, disco, Krautrock, and singer/songwriter schlubs, but the references are evidently harder to pin down; the number of names dropped in the reviews published before its release must triple the amount mentioned throughout "Losing My Edge." There's even some confusion as to which version of David Bowie is lurking around..." (Andy Kellman)

Locust, The
New Erections
PS, US The Locust has been throwing up in the face of conventional music since 1995, when the band formed from the pieces of San Diego hardcore stalwarts Swing Kids and Struggle. Their songs are fast, atrociously ultra violent, and drenched in sci-fi noise, gruesome keyboards, and herky jerky, bestial scream/sing vocals, described by one journalist as "a car wreck with vocals." This is the follow-up to their 2003 Anti/Epitaph debut "Plague Soundscapes". With longer tracks and Mars Volta producer Alex Newport at the helm, "New Erections" should find new fans for this adventurous quartet.

Los llamarada
Exploding Now
PS, US Monterrey, Mexico is the second biggest city in Mexico, one of the intellectual hubs south of the border, and home to LOS LLAMARADA. These four youngsters met while studying psychology and decided to take their brains and fill them with noise. Good thing for you because what they came up with is a great murky noisy claustrophobic no wave mind storm. While touches of Mars, very early Sonic Youth, and even Patty Waters show up in Llamarada's sound, what mi amigos are pounding out is pretty much all their own. Am I excited about this one? Damn right, I am. And once again, like all the other bands S-S released before you ever heard of them (A Frames, Cheveu, Nothing People, a bunch of Tete de Bebe bands), I urge you to take a chance with Los Llamarada (pronounced: Los Yama-RAda). 600 copies, screened sleeves."-Scott Soriano

Loudest Whisper
The Children of Lir
PS, UK The Loudest Whisper originated in rural Fermoy, Co. Cork in the early '60s. This psychedelic folk classic was recorded in 1974, and has gone on to become one of the rarest records ever issued in Ireland. The Children of Lir was a musical score, based around the mystical legend of the Irish King Lir, and his children who are condemned to live as swans. A glorious mixture of catchy melodies, soaring harmonies and biting acid guitar, it's presented here complete with a 12-page booklet featuring rare photos and detailed sleevenotes, as well as six bonus tracks (including demos, non-album 45s and the soundtrack to the work's original broadcast on Irish television), making it the most comprehensive edition of The Children Of Lir ever assembled.

My Midnight Creeps
S-T [2005]
PS, NORWAY 2005 debut album from Norwegian garage-rock/psych-blues "supergroup" My Midnight Creeps led by guitarists for Madrugada and Ricochets. Rocks and, more importantly rolls like classic Union Carbide Productions, The Rolling Stones, The Gun Club, and The Cramps. Highly recommended.
LOWCUT MAGAZINE: "This is good news for all garage/rock/psyche fans. With references to Spacemen 3, The Sonics, The Cramps and 13th Floor Elevators the band presents a broad range of good songs featuring some really nice guitar work, a baritone sax going berserk, trippy drums, percussions, harmonica, psyche-organs, beautiful lyrics and a great sound. No wonder this album has already been rewarded with a lot of Norwegian prizes and awards..."

New Creation
A Unique Disaster
PS, US THE NEW CREATION have reunited! This is their new CD! A Unique Disaster will interest two very different groups of people: outsider music buffs-twisted hipsters with a taste for non-mainstream viewpoints expressed with utter sincerity; and Christians interested in the band's grim warnings of the coming apocalypse (fans of the Left Behind series will probably dig it, too). Featuring a psychedelic (though drug-free) remix of one of their previous songs, a campfire-style singalong about the rise of the antichrist ("From the Roman Shores"), odd carnivaleque tunes warnings about corruption ("Jokes and Games," set to the tune of Grieg's "Norwegian Dance #2"), and garage-band 1960s-style cautionary rock numbers about moral anarchy ("Calamity World") and a blues tune about the end of the world, this album is guaranteed to either delight, baffle or scare you, or perhaps all three; to me, this is THE unnoticed rock event of the last couple of years, and probably the most significant blip on the Outsider Music radar screen since Jandek started to tour."

Orsi, Fabio & Gianluca Becuzzi
Stones Know Everything
PS, US Fresh from his spectacular 3-inch CDR on Foxglove and another release for A Silent Place, Naples, Italy's FABIO ORSI partners here with sound artisan GIANLUCA BECUZZI. Orsi is another young and unexpected talent coming through the new Italian pipeline. The Stones Know Everything is the second release of his sprawling trilogy with Becuzzi (the first CD, Muddy Speaking Ghosts Through My Machines, appeared on A Silent Place in late 2006). Gianluca has been around for the better part of two decades making music under the monikers KINETIX, LIMBO, and others, but his work with wunderkind Orsi opens a new chapter in his impressive body of work. Crafting something this immense puts these two musicians into the realm of Stars of the Lid, Birchville Cat Motel and Growing, creating several intense worlds of ambient splendor, juxtaposing the sounds of everyday life with jetstreams of microtones and pulses of audible light. And they handle this enormous task with the care and precision of a watchmaker or a surgeon, but also with the ears of an obvious fan of sound.

Phillips, Grant Lee
Strangelet (ON SALE)
PS, US New album. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "2007's Strangelet is a more ambitious album than the three releases that preceded it -- unlike the covers set Nineteeneighties, Phillips wrote all the material, and the production aims for a fuller sound than the often spare approach of Mobilize and Virginia Creeper. While the results follow the melodic template that Phillips has made his own since his work with Grant Lee Buffalo, listening to Strangelet confirms the man sounds as good as ever and remains plenty imaginative... Since Grant Lee Buffalo broke up in 1999, Phillips has quietly been establishing himself as a singer and songwriter of the first caliber, and Strangelet is lovely stuff that shows he's still reaching the top of his game (all the more impressive given that this followed Nineteeneighties by a mere nine months)." Thirteen Tales of Love and Revenge
PS, US Debut album from hyped and storied sibling duo. AVERSION: "The duo, sisters Amanda and Catherine Pierce, come at us with a cooing blend of twee melodies and folk-pop guitar work that we usually associate with happy-go-lucky pop songbirds. Sea, The
The Boats Are In The Bay
PS, US Scientists around the world are unanimous: global warming is out to get you. Most recently, global warming struck close to home, though not literally MY home."The Boats" (which includes members of UK groups "the remote viewer" & ex-"hood")..got swept up by "the sea".. At first I was angry, which is natural. "Damn you, the Sea," I yelled!! 'Daaammmnn yoouuuu...! "The Boats" had just released their 3rdLP and things couldn't have been looking brighter. But suddenly they were gone."The Sea" heard my impassioned yells, and months later I found this album "The Boats are in the Bay" on reel-toreel tape lying upon the shore. My guess is that "the boats" were swallowed up by a giant whale, recording the days away inside, using parts of their wrecked boat. Old, broken instruments play soft and simple melodies swamped with lost memories and a glowing warmth. Esker's vocals strongly reverberate in the belly of the beast as she sings out, hoping to sooth their whale host to sleep and someday escape. Fans of the boats should definitely pick this album up ASAP. "The Sea" explore the more organic side of ambient pop. Comparisons could be drawn to "müm" or the intimacy of "shugo tokumaru" or and the studio prowesse of "sigur ros" - but we don't draw comparisons around here. You can't capture "the sea".

Eccentric Soul: Twinight's Lunar Rotation
PS, US This is the Big Dig, the Tutankamen of R&B: Twinight. After two years of interviews, cold calls, storage spaces, half truths, unknowns, and dead ends, we've finally completed a large piece of Chicago's secret soul history. Eccentric Soul: Twinight's Lunar Rotation takes a look beyond their hit maker Syl Johnson, and instead focuses on the records that never had a shot at the charts. It's the story of struggling disc jockeys moonlighting as producers, high school talent show winners, major label cast offs, minor label upgrades, girlfriends with decent voices, and master purchases traded for chart position. It happened after midnight, and it happened right here in our backyard. Comprising 40 tracks in all by 22 artists, among them Renaldo Domino, Dynamic Tints, Annette Poindexter, Nate Evans, Radiants, Notations, Mystiques, Kaldirons, Perfections, Mist, Harrison & The Majestic Kind, Schiller Street Gang, Velma Perkins, Jimmy Jones, Sidney Pinchback, Stormy, Johnny Williams, Elvin Spencer and Pieces Of Peace. Eccentric Soul: The Big Mack Label
PS, US The fourth volume in our Eccentric Soul series examines the oil stained underside of the Motor City sound. There are no gold records, million dollar buyouts, or quaint museums at the end of the story, just a handful of four figure 45s, a box of photographs, and a condemned building. If Detroit was once an ocean of soul, the Big Mack label was certainly an island. Big Mack lasted an incredible twenty years without so much as a sniff of a hit. Dogged by lack of airplay, distribution, and a general lack of understanding of the music business, the label failed on almost every level except where it counted; the music. From soulful doowop to blistering garage funk, a left at sultry R&B and then a quick dodge into budget Hendrix wailing over a steel drum break, this disc is the epitome of Eccentric Soul. Artists include Bob & Fred, the Manhattens, Edd Henry, Ms Tyree Jones, the Essence, the Performers, Mae Young, the Soul President, the Sleepwalkers, the Grand Prix's, and L. Hollis & the Mackadoos.

Alsace Lorraine
Dark One (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 8TH) (ON SALE)
PS, US Alsace Lorraine is the delicately delicious and unique electronic/guitar pop creation of seminary professor Paul Francke. We're pleased to announce that our favorite singer on Earth, Argentinean Singer/Artist Isol has joined Alsace Lorraine to sing on four of the album's 14 tracks too. Isol sings here in English for the first time! Isol left her band Entre Rios (Elefant {Spain}/Darla {US}) when the group signed with EMI Latin America because the deal demanded too much time away from her profession as an Artist/Illustrator. Caitlin Brice sings backing vocals on two tracks. Jane Francke (Paul's sister) sings one track. The sophomore Alsace album Dark One, though not literally very "Dark", was recorded and mixed by Paul at Paul's home studio in Chicago. Isol's warm, exotic, sensual vocals were recorded in Isol's bedroom studio in Buenos Aires. Paul's unique bedroom uber-pop soundtrack provides the perfect music bed to Isol's vocal. The result is a unique blend of Astrud Gilberto, Wolfgang Press, Eurythmics, Pale Saints, St. Etienne, Magnetic Fields, Hope Sandoval, as well as The Wake, Section 25 and other Factory-esque influences. Hopefully, Paul and Isol will make more beautiful music together. Alsace Lorraine sounds romantic; thoughtful, sensuous and smart. Comment from Paul Francke: I began the album begun during college on the south side of Chicago and completed it while working in Campbeltown, on the end of the Kintyre Peninsula, the most remote part of mainland Britain. Between those points I worked on the record in an Episcopalian seminary dormitory in Alexandria, Virginia, while training to be a seminary professor. It couldn't have been done without my brilliant, non-religious friends: Isol sings four of the best songs on the album, but she also made important suggestions for changes to the lyrics and music. We share a lot of beliefs regarding art and beyond, and it has been fascinating to work with her. Her friend Nico recorded her vocals in a studio in Buenos Aires. Caitlin Brice, the lead singer from the previous album, sings excellent backup on two songs here. Joe Moore plays guitar on one song, and my younger sister Jane sings on one song as well.

PS, US As rich and densely layered as their last album, "Misery Is A Butterfly", but the overall mood of wistfulness, melancholy, and regret has been replaced by one of mystical wonder and renewed energy. "It's art music and heart music, with equal appeal to a Serge Gainsbourg fan as to a Sonic Youth fan, without ever sounding like either act" - LA Times. "An otherworldly, richly cinematic adventure" - Q Magazine.

Brown, Steven
Brown Plays Tenco + Live 1988 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 22ND)
PS, UK Steven Brown is a core member of cult avant garde band Tuxedomoon. As a solo artist he has recorded some ten solo albums, including Music For Solo Piano (1983), Searching For Contact (1987), Half Out (1991), Nine Rain (1996) and Decade (2003). Brown Plays Tenco was recorded in Italy in 1987 and features Steven's own interpretations of five songs written by cult artist Luigi Tenco. Born in Cassine in 1938, Tenco scored many hits as a singer in Italy during the 1960s, but shot himself through the head at the San Remo Festival in 1967 after Ciao amore ciao (Hello, Love, Hello), failed to reach the final. The suicide note explained that his suicide was a gesture of protest against the jury's taste in music. Never available on CD before, Brown Plays Tenco has now been digitally remastered with twelve bonus tracks recorded live in Italy in 1988. These include in-concert renditions of songs by Luigi Tenco as well as solo material by both Brown (Besides All That, rwf) and Tuxedomoon (What Use?, Egypt , Lowlands Tone Poem). Artist Resume: Steven Brown was born in Chicago in 1952, and currently resides in Mexico City. Tuxedomoon formed in San Francisco in 1977 around the nucleus of Steven Brown, Blaine Reininger and Peter Principle. Following a string of releases on the Residents' Ralph label, the band relocated to Europe in 1981. Their dozen-odd group albums include the classics Half Mute, Desire, Suite En Sous-Sol, Ghost Sonata and Holy Wars. The latest TM album Bardo Hotel was released in 2006.

Enter 20-year-old rapper/producer CADENCE WEAPON (aka ROLLIE PEMBERTON) hailing from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, son of a Brooklyn DJ, nephew of a funk musician, and child of fresh music. Following massive grassroots support for his independent mixtape, Cadence Weapon Is the Black Hand (2005), Pemberton returns with a more focused sound on Breaking Kayfabe. Breaking Kayfabe is an impossibly accomplished hip hop album with clever songwriting and impressive rhymes paired with the electro-tones of UK grime and West Coast hip hop. Centro-Matic
Operation Motorcide EP (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 3RD)
PS, SPAIN Will Johnson's problem is not a creative drought. He never stops composing. But then he has to decide to which one of his projects each song will go: Centro-Matic, South San Gabriel or his solo albums. He says that thinking about it for a long time can make him consider eliminating a song. After deciding that he is going to shelve one, he gets uptight. He wonders what would have happened with that song he dismissed, if it would have given more strength to his records, or if a hit has been lost on the way. With "Fort Recovery" his muse visited him and left the tap of inspiration on. Even though the final work ended up being a long record (the European version even includes three extra tracks which are not on the American one), some really significant compositions were rejected. The trickiest problem was dismissing songs. Listen to these eight tracks from those sessions and, if you don't mind me asking, which ones wouldn't you have left out?

Listen To Your Left Brain (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 10TH)
PS, US Having honed their chaotic four-on-the-floor post-punk dance style into an unequivocal signature. Copy
Hair Guitar (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 3RD)
PS, US Last year, COPY (who's known as Marius Libman to friends and family) proved that geography isn't everything. Because while Europe and the East Coast once monopolized the modern electro-house sound, Portland now lays claim to its own innovator who has taken the genre to new and unexpected places. His debut, Mobius Beard (Audio Dregs), displayed a knack for morphing headphone-friendly synthpop with floor shaking dance music (...or wait, is it the other way around?) that tore up stereos and clubs throughout the city of Portland and beyond. After a year-long string of legendary, sweatsoaked live sets that invetably erupted into epic dance parties, COPY was voted "Best New Band" by the Willamette Week, solidifying his place as a rising star within the local music scene. Outside of Portland, his infectious brand of instrumental dance music made fans of the likes of Tim Sweeney (DFA), Lovefoxxx (CSS) and countless DJs, audiophiles, hipsters and music nerds alike, who found his style undeniable; somewhere between Ratatat, Timbaland, and MSTRKRFT. And with the release of his notorious "Diva Mixtape Vol.1" under the guise of DJ COPY, new life was breathed into the likes of Mariah Carey and TLC, turning mid-90s RnB jams into triumphant, upbeat bangers that snuck their way into the hearts of many unsuspecting listeners who weren't exactly expecting to roll down the windows and pump their brakes to Whitney Houston this side of the millenium.

Dying Californian, The
Coarsegold (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 10TH)
PS, US The sound of The Dying Californian is rooted in American tradition, influenced by country and folk as much as rock. With floating melodies and complex harmonies, it is difficult to place it into a genre. It is as much at home in a drunken hootenanny as in a late and lonesome night. It all just fits. The Dying Californian's third release on Turn Records is titled Coarsegold. Three years in the making, the album marks a jumping point in the bands signature style and sound, refined and redefined. The story of the album starts 3 years ago when Nathan Dalton, the primary songwriter for The Dying Californian found himself with a new job that had him traveling throughout California, staying in a variety of different places, often, for weeks as a time. On one lengthy trip, Dalton found himself holed up in the small town of Coarsegold, the geographic center of California. Neither northern or southern, western or eastern, simply Coarsegold, California - a town existing somewhere in between. It was here that Dalton found a new center for his own writing, influenced by the stark contrasts of California as well as the isolation and inspiration that only come from being on the road. He began to pen a new record; handheld tape recorders, lyrics on napkins, music on motel notepads, wherever he could find to write it down, he would. Coarsegold, the geographic center of California, the heart, also serves as the pinion for the record.

We are, in some way paying homage to the groups we love and inspire us, but we're also experimenting with the glacial electro/human emotional interface. The future is a robot with a human heart." (Glen Johnson). Piano Magic will release their new album Part-Monster in May 2007, and featured vocalist Angele will release an album as Klima on Peacefrog in March. Gelfand, Dmitry + Evalina Domnitch + Various Artists
Camera Lucida (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 10TH)
PS, US 12k/LINE are very happy to announce their first DVD release with groundbreaking visual artists Dmitry Gelfand + Evalina Domnitch. Their visual work is enhanced by a roster of musicians we are very proud to be working with including Alva Noto, Carter-Tutti (chris & cosey) and Matmos. Camera Lucida is a highly introspective immersive spatial art work creating a fleeting ephemeral materiality by intersecting ultrasound with hyperlight... in essence the creation of a sonic aurora. Domnitch and Gelfand's piece rejects any possibility to be fixed in space and time, but rather offers up the very definition of an unstable work of art, existing entirely for and within the perceptive realm of the viewer. Stephen Kovats, Director of Transmediale 2008. LINE is proud to announce the release of its first DVD, Camera Lucida. The project by Russian/American installation and video artists, Evelina Domnitch and Dmitry Gelfand and developed in collaboration with scientific laboratories in Japan, Germany, Russia and Belgium, Camera Lucida (chamber of light or lucidity) is a 3-dimensional sonic observatory that directly transforms sound into light by employing a phenomenon known as sonoluminescence: ultrasound, propagating within a liquid, triggers the formation and implosion of micro-bubbles that reach temperatures as high as are found on the Sun, and emit light in the shape of sound waves. The authors of the installation, Evelina Domnitch and Dmitry Gelfand, joined forces with multiple sound artists to create the sonochemical compositions presented on this DVD. This DVD also contains a data partition with uncompressed high resolution audio files of all the works. Evelina Domnitch and Dmitry Gelfand create sensory immersion environments that merge physics, chemistry and computer science with uncanny philosophical practices. Having dismissed all forms of fixative and recording media, Domnitch and Gelfand's installations exist as ever-transforming phenomena offered for observation. Because these rarely seen manifestations take place directly in front of the observer without being distorted and flattened onto a screen, they often serve to vastly extend the observer's sensory envelope. Their works have been exhibited worldwide, including shows at V2 Institute for Unstable Media (Rotterdam, Netherlands), Nijo Castle (Kyoto, Japan), Museum of Dreams (St. Petersburg, Russia), I-20 Gallery (New York, USA), Die Schachtel (Milan, Italy) and Tesla (Berlin, Germany).
