Parasol New Arrivals • February 27, 2007

Dearest friends,

We’re extremely stoked to finally have in stock the Psychedelic Phinland, Finnish Hippie & Underground Music 1967-1974 double CD! This compilation is easily becoming one the PMO staffers’ favorites. Do yourself a favor and put on the cans and endure this time trip and expand your mind.

In other news, things have been rather calm around here, at Parasol, which has been nice and has given us the time to catch up on the odds and ends we’ve been meaning to get caught up on. This is most definitely temporary because next week the new Arcade Fire drops and that sole release will have the packing tables full and your mailbox anticipating its arrival.

By the time you read this Jim should have updated our relatively new vinyl page. As well as his Nordic music page. And if you're wondering the term "Scandinavia" excludes Finland while "Nordic" encompasses all.

And so, on to the update. Lots of goodies will be finding their way into the catalog this week so check the site often.

Take your shoes off and stay awhile,

Roy and Paul

Jim's Pick: The Best New Nordic Music

Audionom "Retrospectiv" [US edition] CD $13.00 (Kemado)
Gosh, now that Kemado has released it can I get some takers? Nine-member Swedish collective Audionom caught our ear and then, later on, Kemado's ear with their high-velocity strobe-rock and dark motorik magick. Retrospectiv is a collection of the their mind-numbing guitar-mantras and mesmerizing drone-rock, all propelled by cosmically intense rhythms. Imagine Silverbullit (aka Citizen Bird) prone to punishing krautrock extremes, Neu! bouncing around inside Hawkwind’s “Silver Machine”, and Stereolab on steroids prescribed by PIL.
Sound samples on the front page. More about new Nordic music here. Also available on import, same songs, art, etc.

+/- (Plus/Minus) vs. Bloodthristy Butchers
Split
PS, US +/- specializes in dynamic, loud, Radiohead-ish indie-rock & simultaneously laptop-pop. Experimentation with interesting time signatures & negative space within a hooky hard pop structure. Here, they take on three Bloodthirsty Butchers songs & make them their own. BB was formed in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan in 1987. With their ultra loud almost emo, heavy alterna-rock, transparent & melodious sounds, they are now one of the best band that Japan can boast to the world. The two bands became fast friends while touring Japan & decided to record this split EP. Each band covers three of the others songs. Artwork by famous Japanese illustrator Yoshitomo Nara. Enhanced with live video footage of both bands on stage in Japan.

60 Watt Kid
Time Change
PS, US Kevin Litrow left the racket dance sounds of Dance Disaster Movement for a psychedelic acoustic collage which he dubbed as 60 Watt Kid. This EP captures the most beautiful moments of the now out of print full length with the addition of 3 unreleased tracks. Intergalactic pop with plenty of acoustics & electronics. This EP is stripped down yet incredibly epic!

Aqueduct
Or Give Me Death
PS, US If you're familiar w/ Aqueduct you'll be happy to hear that David Terry's love of the pop hook has only gotten stronger w /time. However, unlike" I Sold Gold's" huge blown out drum sounds & blip-pop synths, "Or Give Me Death" finds him broadening his tonal horizons to encompass mariachi horns, Gershwin-esque strings, looped & layered vocals, & grand piano. There's also quite a lot more electric guitar, & it contains the best song about The Princess Bride EVER! Super cool cover art includes interactive acetate skull layer.

Arkansaw Man
S/T
PS, US Here is the unlikely CD debut of ARKANSAW MAN, a wildly obscure San Francisco art-punk band that flickered to life all so briefly in 1981. 25 minutes of music, 25 years ago and sayonara. Still, the best things in life - in the life of music, anyway - often are tucked away where they are hard to find. With a brilliant economy of means and sparseness reminiscent of dub, the band got an amazing jump start on post-Rock. It revels in terse and choppy guitar, the languid, sour leakage of keyboards and horns, and occasional lyrics sung as ironic disclaimer, while the spare yet vaguely ominous bass lines recall the Gang of Four played back at 4 RPM. A quarter of a century ago, the spindly funk machinery and discordant scraping guitars of Arkansaw Man failed to give the world much to latch onto, so its music got lost, abandoned in a locker at pop culture's bus depot, the key left floating in a gutter somewhere one day to be scavenged. There's no better place to find a glimmer of artistic gold.

Audionom
Retrospectiv [domestic version]
PS, US Formed from the ashes of punk/experimental legends Apparat (not the German Apparat, the Swedish one) and PVC in the late 90's, Audionom is a Stockholm supergroup that quickly became a popular live act known for its abrasive shows that also integrated the films of member Martin Malm. The band's hypnotic pummeling sound took inspiration from their love for such early experimental visionaries as Hawkwind, Brian Eno, and Neu! Nowhere is this more evident then on their full length debut Retrospektiv, which is comprised of material taken from various recordings and incarnations spanning 1999-2002. Repetition is definitely a reoccurring theme on Retrospektiv. Whether it's the punishing monotonous sound in opener "Ljusets Krigare", the electronically-keyed "Kristall," or avant Joy Division-esque "And You Said I Was The Only One," the merging of electronic and punk rock is repeated throughout the entire record.

Baikal
Baikal
PS, US Baikal is a new burner from Bardo Pond brothers John & Michael Gibbons along with fellow Bardo Pond members Clint Takeda and Jason Kourkonis. This time they ventured down the route of heavy free-improvisation and a Last Exit style hard rock approach coupled with a hard psych bend. With two tracks each weighing in at over 30 minutes in length it's clear that Baikal is a deep voyage under seas with yet another mind-blowing Bardo Pond side project featuring Bardo brothers John & Michael Gibbons as your tour guide - and it's a heavy trip indeed. Dive in.

Banksy
Wall & Piece
PS, US Artistic genius, political activist, painter & decorator, mythic legend or notorious graffiti artist? The work is unmistakable, except may be when it's squatting in the Tate or New York's Metropolitan Museum. Witty & subversive, his stencils show monkeys w/ weapons of mass destruction, policeman w/ smiley faces, rats w/ drills, & umbrellas. His identity remains unknown, but his work is prolific. This feat. old & new work in a fully illustrated color volume.

Bark Haze, The
Untitled
PS, US This exclusive CD release is entirely different from the LP release on Important, which is also untitled. The Bark Haze is primarily a guitar duo of GOWN (nom de plume of one Andrew Macgregor) and Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth, etc). Auxiliary members have been know to include Pete Nolan (Magik Markers, Virgin Eye Blood Brothers, Cops et al). Their name came from a mishearing of the radical early 70s R+B group the Bar-Kays and from that moment the concept of mishearing and allegiance to presenting the mishearing as some open-ended musical course became The Bark Haze's identity. So far all concerts have taken place in Western Massachusetts and once in the confines of Cambridge, MA's Twisted Village record emporium. They anxiously await their debut gig in the UK at the Nightmare Before Christmas event curated by Moore. As the heroic and potentially bonkers Carpenters refrained We've Only Just Begun. Damn straight.

Second release is a journey through soundscapes, moods & stark images- filled with the sounds of empty rooms, cold stairwells & shortwave radio frequencies. Whispered, quiet finger-picking exploding into loud guitars & distorted violins then dying back down again into whispers & piano pieces: Alt-folk/Dark Indie Country.

PS, US His most musical BARR record to date, Brendan explores more of a pop sensibility (w/out ever becoming poppy) w/ a new means of lyrical narrative & execution. Crisis Helpline
PS, US Their edgy lo-fi country noir sound owes as much to J Mascis as it does to Johnny Cash. Beautiful. Essential. They turn acoustic punk rock down to 9 1/2 instead of up to 11, with a little taste of alt.country thrown in for good measure.

Bermon, Victor
Arriving At Night
PS, US Where did the quiet romantic composers working within electronic music's own folk form go? We need them back, which is maybe why Victor Bermon seems like a rebel whose cause is already lost in the slipped-stream of popular opinion. Tracks glide on backbeats that hearken back to crate-dug jazz records, warm wide chords & layers of melodic counterpoint. Acoustic guitars strum in the background, or pick their way through the fore, but they always welcome the dawn.

Besnard Lakes, The
The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse
PS, US Rich with BEACH BOYS style harmonies, ROY ORBISON reverbs and orchestra, PINK FLOYD's pacing and FREDDY MERCURY's falsetto, "The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse" is a luxurious foray into sound and music. This is the second record by THE BESNARD LAKES, Montrealers by way of Western Canada. Their independently released previous record, "Volume I", came out in 2004, and it was noticed by critics but was largely overlooked by the public at large. On both records, The Besnard Lakes have shown that they are masters of finely-honed experimental pop songs that invoke the eerie Lynchian setting as aided and abetted by the music of Julee Cruise. But, on "The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse", the band throws into the mix a mad dash of FLEETWOOD MAC proportioned swagger and ambition. Not so incidentally, The Besnard Lakes have created a masterpiece that will resonate within all quarters, amongst critics, casual and not-so-casual rock listeners, garden variety pop fans and headphone junkies.

Black Lips
Los Valientes Del Mundo Nuevo
PS, US Now 22 years old, The Black Lips are grizzled veterans and kings of the psychedelic garage rock underground and legends in the scene. Playing the self-coined "flower punk" in the vein of Nuggets-faves The Seeds and The 13th Floor Elevators, live or on record it's hard to hide the fun these boys have and impossible to describe their unpredictable live show and how uninhibited the audiences are. This record is an amazing primer of Black Lips greatest hits. Contains new versions of tracks taken from their three previous albums and multiple singles. The music is every bit as deceptively sweet and dangerous as the city they recorded in - Tijuana

Burning Star Core
Blood Lightning 2007
PS, US Full of creeping drones, strange mutilated vocal incursions, and compositions full of unidentifiable sounds both acoustic and electronic. Another classic in organized sound and idea from the mind of Mr. C. Spencer Yeh. Blood Lightning is the third in a series of very particular BxC works in theme and scope, beginning with "Three Sisters Who Share an Eye" (No Fun limited LP series), and then "Everyday World of Bodies" LP (Ultra Eczema.) Ideas of drone, 'minimalism,' and human themes are heavily a concern, and unlike other recent and upcoming major works, BxC on these albums is kept intimate, primarily operated by C. Spencer Yeh. Instrumentation includes the current BxC trinity of voice, violin and electronics, surrounded by a whole host of other methods. In recent years the BxC line-up both live and in-studio has included Robert Beatty and Trevor Tremaine (of Kentucky/Michigan-based maniacs Hair Police) and solo sound artist Mike Shiflet- Who all appear on the last track of this release. Burning Star Core began in 1993 in Cincinnati, Ohio where it currently resides with primary member C. Spencer Yeh. It is considered a project and not a pseudonym. Not married to any traditional line-up, method or sound, Yeh's eclecticism separates him from his peers. BxC will be appearing live throughout the first half of 2007, including a tour of US and Canada with Carlos Giffoni and Prurient, a weekend of festivals in Germany, a collaborative appearance with Zaimph at No Fun Fest 2007, and other individual events.

Campbell, Glen
Best of The Glen Campbell Music Show
PS, UK The best of 3 performances in the early 70's - the peak of Campbell's career. This DVD represents the best performances from a string of concerts filmed by Ember in the early 70s - the peak of Campbell's career. The first was a recording of a show at The Talk Of The Town in '72, then through '75 Campbell six TV shows broadcast by the BBC. Backed by his then regular band and the BBC Concert Orchestra, Campbell performed live his greatest hits plus other favorite songs of his choosing. The performances are brilliant, the backing very tight, the sound recording excellent, and all filmed in gloriously gaudy 1970s color schemes. This includes his best known hits and interesting covers. Song Titles: Dream Baby, By The Time I Get To Phoenix, Mary In The Morning, Try A Little Kindness, Gentle On My Mind, Ocean In His Eyes, Time In A Bottle, The Dreams Of The Everyday Housewife, Help Me Make It Through The Night, Wichita Lineman, Galveston, Country Boy, Oklahoma Sunday Morning, It Must Be A Sin When You Love Somebody, The Moons A Harsh Mistress, Aint No Sunshine, Oh Happy Day

Chrysler, The
Cold War Classic [U.S. Edition] (ON SALE)
PS, US Domestic release for The Chrysler's second album, with 5 bonus tracks. 'Cold War Classic' is the second full-length release from mysterious Swedish folk-pop band The Chrysler, recorded in a little cabin outside Katrineholm, Sweden; an album filled with hope, agony, and clarinets. The band's debut album 'Failures And Sparks' was well-received by music writers, who have compared The Chrysler's enigmatic, bonfire folk and baroque, jangling pop to The Byrds, Neil Young, Simon & Garfunkel, Nick Drake, The Band, Belle & Sebastian, The Velvet Underground, Lambchop, and Norway's Kings Of Convenience. Guest appearances by Laakso vocalist Martin Krunnegard and Swedish songstress Britta Person. As with their debut album 'Failures And Sparks', released in late-2005 by Galaxy Gramophone/PLG, the U.S. edition of 'Cold War Classic' will be augmented with five bonus tracks, the songs from their Blue Gold and First Blood EPs, including their cover of Bob Dylan's "Changing of the Guards".

PS, US Although still bearing the moniker 'New wave of Finnish heavy metal', this one definitely bares more relationship to In a Silent Way than Aces High. No sign of vocals at all, just chilled-out grooves that still have Prospekt at their core (though perhaps their exterior is more like a heavily sedated Soft Machine?). PS, US "Its about my desperate attempt to lose myself in a candy-colored fantasyland of freaks & fairies. Its an urge that I think lots of us share, especially these days as the real world is getting increasingly grim. The album starts w/ an 8-min epic w/ strings, a choir singing in Latin, a blinding, atonal guitar solo & birds singing before the dawn. There are psychedelic interludes & instrumental passages between more conventional 'pop' songs & the album ends w/ a triumphant/tragic piano ballad," says Bobby. Feat. Daniels, David Karsten
Sharp Teeth
PS, US A compelling exploration of moral ambiguity & perhaps-unavoidable human disconnection, suggesting modern American folk music in the Southern tradition: often deathly slow, like life in the South, and haunted by religion- but unable to find answers in its Bible. The sounds of the South appear as well; Nashville's slide guitars, nods to Dixieland Jazz, drums, horns, choirs & epic string arrangements take their places in songs that, despite their grand scale, manage to be concise & immediate, conveying a
distinct love of pop music.

PS, US The undisputed kings of Southern country punk. This blows any stereotypes about Red staters, punks, & country rockers out of the water w/ the genius of its conceit: it's a country punk opera based on...Dante's Inferno! With spoken parts & good ol' rock-n-roll, they tell the story of Donkey's tour of Hell (populated by ghosts of Lynrd Skynrd and hippie jam bands) with Ol' Virg. Diagram Brothers
Some Marvels of Modern Science + Singles
PS, UK 24 tracks. Digitally remastered from the original studio tapes, Some Marvels of Modern Science + Singles features 24 tracks and runs for 74 minutes. In addition to all 14 tracks from their 1981 album on the New Hormones label (founded by Buzzcocks), the CD also features ten bonus tracks from all four singles released between 1980 and 1982, including the cult favourites Bricks and Discordo, as well as the ultra-rare Diagram Brothers German EP. Often compared to XTC, Gang of Four and Fire Engines in their day, The Diagram Brothers invented and defined their sound 'discordo' as follows: "The music was made to a strict formula, or set of rules. All the guitar chords were based on discordant notes, all the beats were very simple rock or disco, and all the words very straightforward and down to earth." Some Marvels Of Modern Science drew warm reviews on release in 1981: "The Diagram Brothers play an extraordinary, quirky, jerky brand of speedo funk, as if some Pavlovian behaviourist has got hold of The Gang of Four and started to do tricky experiments on them... Science before sentience, the didactic before the ecstatic seems to be the unusual anti-rock n' roll idea... This is an album of observations which are never dull, and of music which - in spite of being clinical - is never cold. I quite warm to this kind of off-beat fun and to the proof that the English eccentric spirit needn't necessarily take twee grown-up public schoolboy forms." (NME). The CD booklet features a deluxe 16 pages booklet featuring facsimile artwork and detailed liner notes.

DJ Hidden
The Later After
PS, GERMANY After 25 releases on vinyl over the course of seven years (not counting the ones of his Outside Agency and Semiomime monikers), for such labels as Ruff Teck, Outbreak, Killing Sheep or Sub/Version, here comes finally the first full length album by DJ Hidden. "The Later After" presents a hour long of new material ranging from the hardest and most twisted drum'n'bass to more downtempo, atmospheric tracks. At the same time a long due crowning for this musician and a perfect introduction for people who have been missing out, "The Later After" is the most accomplished and unequalled achievement by this impudently skilful producer. Active since the mid-90s, Noel Wessels has over the years become an essential actor of the Dutch electronic music scene. Best known for his productions and shows under the DJ Hidden moniker as well as founding member of the gabber unit The Outside Agency, this untiring producer has been active in all genres of electronic musics, signing records and CDs of countless side-projects (along which the very remarked, laid back Semiomine one). "The Later After" is a wide-ranging display of the various styles that this musician has touched over the years, combined in twelve tracks written specially for this release. "The Later After" could finally not be a DJ Hidden release if there wasn't anything hidden in it. From the complex artwork (designed by DJ Hidden himself) to the flawless and intricate audio productions, this album might turn into a treasure-hunt, are many details, messages and surprises lay there for the attentive listener to find.

Again, a collection of outstanding songs written by herself and others, great well arranged folk-rock which has caught the attention of DJs and movers everywhere....Bonnie will be playing shows this February in the UK for the first time in far too long....to miss them would be sheer foolishness! I'll wager she'll also be doing a fair few interviews and so on....you know it makes sense.

Dolorean
You Can't Win
PS, US Another collection of melancholy & stunningly beautiful folk pop songs. Singer Al James completed the eleven new songs here after Dolorean's 2005 European tour & before long, the band performed the set live at two gigs within two weeks at one bar in their hometown of Portland, OR. After these two brief outings, James & cohorts promptly went into the studio & recorded all the basic tracks in one weekend. Cinematic & haunting in their imagery, the songs on- from the spooky opening percussion on the title track to the closing notes of "My Still Life"

Dora Flood
We Live Now
PS, US Over the course of their five LPs and one EP, Dora Flood has produced some of the most notable shoegazing dream pop to come out of the United States. Their brand new effort, We Live Now, is perhaps the acclaimed San Francisco group's heaviest sounding release to date with nods to late '60s and early '70s interstellar boogie rock spliced into the heady mix. With praise coming from discerning music magazines like The Big Takeover, Skyscraper, Losing Today and Ptolemaic Terrascope, it is no wonder that audiences leave Dora Flood's shows feeling that they witnessed something of a secret, psychedelic phenomenon. These live close encounters, as well as their classic studio work, leave listeners with bold memories of pounding grooves, lush orchestration, and melodies so timeless that they take up residence in the heads of those fortunate enough to cross their path.

Elastik Band, The
S/T
PS, US Known almost exclusively for their extremely politically incorrect 1967 Nuggets cult favorite "Spazz" (track #2), the Elastik Band was actually a highly talented group that could play just about any popular style in vogue during the mid-to-late 60s, much like the Knickerbockers. Thus, at times they sound like the Byrds with vibraphone ("Mixed Emotions," #3), the Mamas & the Papas ("All I Need," #10), the Syndicate of Sound ("Lose Yourself," 19), and even what sounds like a parody of the Zombies ("Fire and Desire," #9). But the group excelled at the 12-string guitar and multipart harmonies of groups like the Byrds and Beau Brummels, as many tracks on the disc attest. They also had a few curiosities besides "Spazz": "Popcorn" (#7) being the closest, though "Mrs. Pig" (#17) would also qualify. The last track is from an Australian radio broadcast in 1968 in which the DJ begins playing the song "Spazz" but cuts it off before completion and calls it "offensive." This disc, released on lead singer David Cortopassi's private label, represents the band's complete output of their own compositions (they also recorded a Jimmy Webb tune at one point), some never before released. Hopefully the release, though belated, will show that the Elastik Band was far more than a novelty one-hit wonder.

Eleh
Floating Frequencies/Intuitive Synthesis Volume 1
PS, US Eleh was formed to specifically to pay tribute to early experimental minimalist pioneers especially La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Eliane Radigue, Pauline Oliveros and Charlemagne Palestine. This record is pressed in a deluxe edition of 400 on audiophile quality 180 gram vinyl mastered and pressed at RTI with letter pressed jackets done by Manifesto Letterpress. Eleh creates highly minimal and deeply spiritual pure analog drone music with emphasis on the physical ultra-low end. Incorporating tones as low as .05 hz (well below the range of human hearing) Eleh is as much of a physical experience as it is an audio one. To be heard and felt correctly the listener must be sitting with ears at speaker height at least 7 feet away. Noise canceling headphone use is also recommended for the optimum listening experience.

Eluvium
Copia
PS, US Following a string of increasingly remarkable albums, ELUVIUM's MATTHEW COOPER set out to broaden his instrumental palette, while maintaining the uncanny emotional resonance that has become his trademark. The result is "Copia", an hour-long epic that applies Eluvium's heartache-inducing ether to a symphony of strings, brass, keyboards and piano. Noticeably absent but hardly missed are the washes of guitars that color most of Eluvium's previous material. The deliberate exclusion of traditional rock instrumentation serves as sufficient proof that the instrument is not Eluvium's driving force. At best it is a catalyst, a vehicle to that netherworld in the back of your head, where your life starts to uncontrollably reevaluate itself.

Fane, Julian
Our New Quarters
PS, US His new pieces are grounded in live percussion, great swaths of strings, indecipherable high-pitched vocals & lush, sweeping synth effects. With their sixth studio album, they've returned to an earlier, simpler mode of recording, in order to finally capture the intensity and ecstasy of their live performances. Retaining the signature Frames feel and texture but with more space and warmth, "The Cost" is, in leader Glen Hansard's words, "our 70's folk record¿Gordon Lightfoot, early Elton John, that kind of feel." With their catchiest songs to date and the intimate feel of their lauded live performances, "The Cost" will lift The Frames alongside bands like Coldplay to inspire and exhilarate us.

Frith, Fred
Impur
PS, US In 1996, Fred organized an event at Lecole Nationale de Musique de Villeurbanne in France involving students grouped according to their departments & separated, each playing musical material Fred had prepared for them. In order to co-ordinate all the groups, everyone followed a precise time-score prepared by Fred. The entire event was recorded on 4 A-DAT machines, & this CD is the result: a lurching, complex & capricious beast w/ many heads: an orchestra tuning up; a salute to Sonny Blount; a roiling chaotic mass of sound splitting into layers, colliding back together, pullulating, ululating, roaring & sometimes mewing like a kitten.

PS, US Consists of two, related, small-ensemble works for 6 & 7 musicians respectively - mostly strings, with percussion, flute, clarinet & electronics. Future Pilot Aka
Secrets From The Clockwise
PS, UK Featuring collaborations & appearances from members of The Go-Betweens/Sonic Youth/Belle & Sebastion/Can /Stooges/Fire Engines/Concerto Caledonia/Unkle Bob/ Karine Polwart & Alasdair Gray. Some highlights - "TERY BINA (NOTHING WITHOUT YOU)" Kicking off with a cyclic rendition of the classic Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan track featuring vocals contributions from Pilot family members Vinita Dade and 4 year old Anurudh (pilot in training) singing over a shimmering dulcimer led track. "EYES OF LOVE" Recording very much with the spirit of Two-Tone in mind and the energy of early Kinks, this uplifting summer groover is sung by Belle & Sebastian's Stuart Murdoch & Sarah Martin. "IT'S IN THE HEART OF EVERYONE" Simple mathematics with former Lydia Lunch /Swans/Current 93 collaborator Joe Budenholzer with harmonies from Karine Polwart -minus 4 equals 7 indeed. "BOOMERANG" Slight return-the second coming of our man Joseph Budenholzer. "THE CITY OF LIGHT" The Go-Betweens Robert Forster & Grant McLennan do a 'reading' of this miniscule pop gem, 58 seconds of undiluted Pop to spring clean your mind! "NUCLEAR WAR" Members of Sonic Youth (Thurston Moore/Kim Gordon), The Fire Engines (Davy Henderson) and Stooges/Minutemen bass legend (Mike Watt) pay homage to the spirit of jazz giant Sun Ra ,on this one of his minimalist compositions from the 70's.This track also features a rare recording of the 'fu-horn' performed by iconic radio producer Stewart Cruickshank. "SHENANDOAH" This haunting folk song features chilling vocals and waterfall piano by Karine Polwart alongside young Glasgow improv percussionist Alex Neilson on loan from Scatter/Glasgow Improviser's Orchestra. "FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS" This historic track documents a genuine piece of 'instant composing' featuring a live jam across the telephone exchange, Sushil K Dade performs on acoustic guitar in Glasgow whilst Damo Suzuki (Can) listens to the chords 'down the line' from his Cologne HQ and responds with his hauntingly poignant, crackly telephone vocals.

Room To Expand
PS, US The alias of Dusseldorf-based pianist/composer Volker Bertelmann, whose work is based upon an exploration of the possibilities of the "prepared" piano. Volker explores & influences the outcome of his playing by getting right down inside the instrument- clamping wedges of leather, felt or rubber between the strings; preparing the hammers with aluminium paper or rough films; or weaving guitar strings around the piano's guts. The resulting tracks are composed both originally & charmingly, forming vivid, unconventional pieces made through what Volker terms a playful "research-enthusiasm," much informed by modern electronica or Indonesian gamelan as it is by any classical cannon.

Haysi Fantayzee
Battle Hymns for Children Singing: The Best of Haysi Fantayzee
PS, UK Haysi Fantayzee were formed in 1981 by fashion photographer Kate Garner, former Animal Magnet member Paul Caplin and Jeremy Healy, a well known face on London's club scene. Together they set about injecting a sense of fun and adventure into the music scene, wearing outlandish, self designed costumes and dreadlocks, and writing songs that married sexual subversion with deliberately disposable and cocksure dayglo pop. Their 'Dickensian Rasta' look was an immediate hit and saw their debut single 'John Wayne Is Big Leggy' rise to number 11 in the national charts. In their brief career they would also enjoy chart success with 'Holy Joe' and 'Shiny Shiny'. All three hits are reprised on this CD, as is their sole album, Battle Hymns For Children Singing. The package also features a host of bonus tracks, remixes, and sleevenotes written with the co-operation of both Healy and Garner. The former went on to become one of the UK's most successful DJs, while the latter is an accomplished and in-demand photographer for artists including Sinead O'Connor, Bjork, David Bowie and others.

PS, US They're back & rolling out their sounds w/ soul & bounce hitherto unheard in their halcyon days. Hubcap City
Superlocalhellfreakride
PS, US BILL TAFT and WILL FRATESI are luminaries of Atlanta's indie rock avant-garde - Taft's legacy as a key player in SMOKE and Fratesi's tenure as the rickety percussionist behind such lonely and urbane Southern specters as CAT POWER and TENEMENT HALLS culminates in HUBCAP CITY with slow, serpentine miasma. "Superlocalhellfreakride" is a guided tour through Atlanta's underbelly; a survey of the acoustics found in its burned-out buildings, graveyards and long-abandoned mills. The humid ghosts of Hubcap City's ancestors, including Smoke, the Jody Grind and Atlanta's seminal Destroy All Music Festivals in the 1980s all echo in these folkish dirges of melody and noise. With each lazy and uplifting honk of the horn over a clatter of strings and metal the group pushes the old weird Atlanta into deeper and higher levels of beautiful imprisonment, and the only way out is through.

Western Sky Music CDR
PS, UK Limited CDR only release. Over the last four years, Make Mine Music - a collective of musicians and independent label - has established a name for itself for its catalogue of beguiling and varied music, from the wistful nostalgia of July Skies and Epic45 to the ambient dreamscapes of Yellow6 and Portal. The next release for the label is the debut album by Innerise, "Western Sky Music". Innerise has been existence since the mid-1990s in various incarnations, based around composer and multi-instrumentalist Tarl Broad-Ashman. Debuting in 2002 on the split EP with Schengen and Portal, with later tracks appearing on the Make Mine Music compilation "Flow", Innerise established themselves with a sound uniting elements of pop, ambient, electronica and dub. Recorded in 2004 and 2005, Innerise's debut album is long awaited. "Western Sky Music" sees Tarl joined on several tracks by singer Katherine Cobley, who adds her beautiful vocals and honest, heart-on-sleeve lyrics. Jawbone
S/T
PS, UK Jawbone was born from the ashes of The Mirage and Turquoise, two of the UK's greatest cult pop-psych bands (and both recently anthologized on RPM and Rev-Ola respectively) and their lone 1970 album rounds off their stories perfectly. They were thrown together after guitarist Ray Glynn and drummer Dave Hynes decided to re-form The Mirage after a short stint in The Spencer Davis Group came to an end in 1969 (they appear on the excellent "Short Change" single and ill-fated Funky album). Vocalist Pete Hynes and former bassist Dee Murray was swiftly poached for Elton John's band so they recruited keyboard player and former Mirage sidekick/songwriter Kirk Duncan who called up another former colleague, Jeff "Gus" Peters of the recently defunct Turquoise to handle bass duties. Dave Hynes secured the band a deal with Merv Cohn's newly minted Carnaby label and they changed their name to The Portebello (sic) Explosion for a single coupling the dreamy, Beatlesque pop-sike of "We Can Fly" and a tough, hard-edged cover of Bubble Puppy's minor US hit "Hot Smoke And Sassafras". The single went nowhere but album sessions began regardless in late 1969 with the re-recording of three old Mirage tunes - "How's Ya Pa?", "Chicago Cottage" and "Jeremiah Dreams" (mis-titled "Jeremiah's Dream" on the eventual album), a suitably demented re-working of their unreleased 1967 psychedelic opus "Ebeneezer Beaver". When "How's Ya Pa?" was released as a single in early 1970, it was credited to yet another new moniker, Jawbone. Typically for this period, Dave Hynes had become obsessed by The Band and set about remodeling the group in their image. Consequently, titles like "Honeysuckle Redwood Cabin", "Homestead" and "Mister Custer" came thick and fast, bearing the distinct influences of The Band and The Byrds.

London, Julie
Lonely Girl
PS, UK Yes the girl who single handedly launched the Torch Singer genre...and opened the door for every imperfect but sexy vocalist since..... The most remarkable thing about Julie London is remarkable indeed: that she used her erotic persona not so much to interpret songs as to change the nature of them to become something other than when sung by anyone else. She used her breathy, sexy, sultry voice not to sing a version of a song that could compete with someone else's on a scale of good to better to best, but to change it's meaning. This, her second album, carries on from where her first left off...soft eroticism and single entendre...songs of yearning and loneliness in Julie's own bedroom whisper...just try to resist! The acclaim and success enjoyed by our issue of her first album legendary "Julie Is Her Name" tells you all you need to know....what a woman, what a record...I'll go and lie down now... Medicine Head
New Bottles, Old Medicine
PS, UK When, in early 1970, legendary Radio 1 DJ John Peel ventured up to Wolverhampton's Lafayette club to do a gig, he came upon two guys who called themselves Medicine Head, the uniquely configured duo of John Fiddler and Peter Hope-Evans. So impressed was Peel that he signed Medicine Head to his label, Dandelion Records and later that year released "New Bottles, Old Medicine" the 1st of three studio albums that Medicine Head would release on the revered label. The walrus-mustached Fiddler would simultaneously sing, play guitar and operate a bass drum and hi-hat cymbal with his foot, augmented by the equally hirsute Hope-Evans on harmonica, jaws harp, mouth bow and strange concoctions of percussion. More art school than rock'n'roll, Medicine Head wrote poetic, spiritual, thoughtful, folk-rock tunes that have stood the test of time. Now the band's debut album can be enjoyed again as Cherry Red Records continues it's program of re-releasing classic albums from the Dandelion catalogue. "New Bottles, Old Medicine" follows hot on the heels of re-issues by Dandelion artists Bridget St John; Clifford T Ward; Principal Edwards Magic Theatre and also the acclaimed compilation box-set "Life Too, Has Surface Noise.

Milenasong
Seven Sisters
PS, US Berlin-based Sabrina Milena. The songs unravel as if written by a delicate hand on rice paper, stories which border between dream & realty. The vocal melodies flicker like eyelids in REM sleep & her unusual voice is a whole choir in itself. Her music weaves together Norwegian folklore, English folk-rock, forgotten memories & poetry. Her sound is related to such artists as His Name Is Alive, Sandy Denny, This Mortal Coil, Roy Harper & Vashti Bunyan.

Minus The Bear
Interpretaciones Del Oso
PS, US Their 1st remix record! And while this act can frequently reek of self-indulgence w/ most bands, the resulting record here offers a fresh & varied look into a band that has sadly been reduced to the more pop corners of the earth. They have much more in common w/ chronic noise masters in Dalek than you might think: their records are frequently steeped in atmospherics & peppered w/ some serious prog-rock tendencies. Feat. remixes by TYONDAI BRAXTON, OKTOPUS, ALIAS & many others

Minus The Bear
Interpretaciones Del Oso
PS, US Minus The Bear's records are frequently steeped in atmospherics and peppered with some serious prog-rock tendencies. Their most recent full-length,
"Menos El Oso", was heavy on samples and their live set finds guitarist David Knudson playing his pedals more frequently than his guitar, hunkered over the side of the stage, syncopated and spastic. As the band transforms, this record achieves that rare remix goal of presenting an already esteemed record in an entirely new light.

This resulted in a ensemble that is partly responsive & partly autonomous.

My Teenage Stride
Ears Like Golden Bats
PS, UK "Ears Like Golden Bats" is the third album by Brooklyn-based My Teenage Stride and the follow-up to 2005's "Major Major" (Becalmed KLECD 103). The heart of My Teenage Stride is multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter Jedediah Smith. Jed grew up in Massachusetts and at age 14 started playing guitar, soon adding bass, piano and drums to the mix. As soon as he could steal his older brother's Tascam 4-track, he was writing and recording songs as a one-man band, and by age 18 he had compiled several boxes of tapes and had already written 400 songs. Just over a decade later, he's written hundreds more, with no signs of slowing down. Although previous releases were mainly the work of Jed alone in the studio, many tracks on "Ears Like Golden Bats" have been recorded with the help of a stable band. The current My Teenage Stride line-up is Jedediah Smith instruments, vocals), Jenny Logan (bass), Brett Whitmoyer (drums) and Dakkan Abbe (guitar). At just under 40 minutes, "Ears" gathers a collection of captivating guitar pop gems that manage to combine fatalism with not-yetdefeated hope, which seems to be an inherent quality of many of Smith's compositions. The references to Phil Spector, the Jesus & Mary Chain and Television Personalities are still present in well-crafted and immediate tracks like 'We'll Meet At Emily's', 'That Should Stand For Something' and 'Terror Bends'. They're hookladen songs that will have you humming all day long - you might clap your hands or snap your fingers too. Titles such as 'Reversal' or 'Genie Of New Jersey' and 'To Live And Die In The Airport Lounge' expand on those influences, sounding more atmospheric, reminiscent of the Chills and the pop side of John Cale and Brian Eno. They are catchy in a non-obvious way, loose recordings that let space for moods and ideas to bleed through the album, like the apparent dark tone that seems to permeate 'Reception', the jangly 'Heartless & Cruel' or 'Depression Kicks'.

Nico
All Tomorrow's Parties: Nico Live (2 shows on one double album)
PS, UK One of the most fascinating figures of rock's fringes, Nico hobnobbed, worked, and was romantically linked with an incredible assortment of the most legendary entertainers of the '60s. Nico first rose to fame as a European supermodel, also landing a bit part in Fellini's La Dolce Vita film. In the mid- 1960's she moved to New York, where Andy Warhol installed her as a vestigial presence and occasional lead singer for the Velvet Underground. The band never really accepted her as a bona fide member and she departed in 1967, but not before contributing unforgettable deadpan vocals to three of the songs on their classic 1967 debut album. Nico embarked on a solo career, recording folk-rock-flavored songs for her debut Chelsea Girl album with assistance from Jackson Browne, Lou Reed, and John Cale. Her 1969 follow-up, The Marble Index, was a dramatic departure that unveiled her doomladen, gothic persona, produced by Cale and prominently featuring her deep vocals, impenetrable lyrics, and ghostly harmonium. Her subsequent '70s albums explored much the same territory, with assistance from Cale and influential art rockers like Brian Eno. She fought a constant struggle with a massive drug habit and tangled personal life and eventually died of a cerebral hemorrhage in Ibiza in 1988. The original goth rocker, Nico's albums are demanding and bleak, but map a unique and starkly powerful vision that has become more influential with age. - A brand new, previously unreleased double-album featuring 2 shows from one of the great all-time rock music icons - Nico. - All Tomorrow's Parties" features extremely rare material from two shows Nico played in the UK in the early 1980's.

A Double Gift of Tongues
PS, US CHRIS BARTH re-emerges with "A Double Gift Of Tongues" to share once again NORMANOAK's mysterious fibrillation of heart and lung. Unbound from his share of duties with THE IMPOSSIBLE SHAPES, Barth chronicles a world "of acorns, blood, and sacrifice; of the holy hexagram of intertwined triangles; of the holy books writ in the sands of madness; Of the language behind language and the seeds of the unspeakable." Barth's ability to chew up, unbuckle, and alternate between sanguine sanctity and life's whimsical playfulness has never shown itself in a purer light than throughout the 14 song landscape of this limited vinyl release. Fans of the inwardly mobile mysticism of DONOVAN or the soul damaged guitar skree of GEORGE BRIGMAN's "Jungle Rot" in its most minimal state should book their ticket to "A Double Gift Of Tongues" immediately.

Olvis
Bravado
PS, UK Third album from Icelandic maverick Orlygur Thor Orlygsson, following last year's much-adored second full length "The Blue Sound" and the previous year's eponymous debut. Continuing the linear progression evident from first album to second, "Bravado" raises the bar further, with an equal split between lush instrumentals and hypnotic full vocal tracks (in his native tongue). With comparisons and appeal across the board, from chillout to Richard Hawley, Olvis' music defies classification, but ultimately has a heartwarming, relaxing, all-encompassing feel that renders pigeonholing unnecessary. As with "The Blue Sound", "Bravado" features the A-list of Reykjavik musicians as a supporting cast within its fourteen tracks: SIGUR ROS drummer Orri Dyrason plays drums on four tracks, with fellow SIGUR ROS member Georg Holm playing bass on two tracks, along with percussion and drums on three tracks from APPARAT ORGAN QUARTET's Arnar Geir Omarsson and violin from Maria Huld Markan Sigfusdottir from AMINA (Sigur Ros' string quartet) on one track. The whole album was written and produced by Orlygsson himself, and was recorded mainly at Sigur Ros' Sundlaugin studio during the fall of 2005, and lyrically touches upon Orlygur's disillusionment with global capitalism and US hegemony - not that you'd know it, unless you speak Icelandic.

PS, US Feat. DANIEL PADDEN (VOLCANO THE BEAR), CHRIS HLADOWSKI & AMY VULLIAMY (NALLE). The heir apparant to Moondog & Zoltán Kodály, they blend European folk, narrative, popular & chamber forms to create modern compositions that provide attention-grabbing hooks & thought-provoking challenges. At times formal & at others improvisational, it is difficult to pin down their sound. Gran Poder
PS, US An amazing debut that is just the first stone of the sonic monolith they're going to build step by step. In this first recording, their musical influences (Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Melvins, Earth, Sleep) get mixed w/ their peculiar perception of the south-spanish religious folklore. The result is a lethargic music with obsesive repetitions, minimalism, feedback, distortion and end-less drones creating a primitive trance inducing atmosphere. Feat. one exclusive bonus track- cover of Venoms' classic "Genocide."

Single Life/My Best Friend
PS, US So we asked STEPHEN McBEAN to help us out with the description of this 7-inch slice of vinyl heaven he created. We got the following key phrases out of him: "European car ads" and "4 am dancing shoes". The first song called "Single Life" is yet another in a long line of great fuzzed out Velvet-styled gems by Pink Mountaintops, sped up ever so slightly to be in synch with the minds of akathisiacs everywhere. And the reverse side, "My Best Friend", is the more affecting and spiritual of the two, perhaps McBean's most beautifully crafted song to date.

Honey Rose
PS, US Rameses III are architects of the most beautiful swathes of blissful ambience whose releases have previously found homes on labels like Celebrate Psi Phenomenon, Music Fellowship, Scarcelight, MYMWLY, Barl Fire and Type. On "Honey Rose", the group's first release for Important, the South London trio builds a bucolic soundtrack to Jon Spira's mysterious short film "Suityman". Whilst the influence of Bruce Langhorne, Boxhead Ensemble and much of the 4AD roster can be keenly felt on this six song EP, so too can the wondrous drone narratives that are such a feature of Rameses III's previous works. More structured and melodious then much of their output, "Honey Rose" is the perfect place for a newcomer to begin exploring the music of one of the finest purveyors of ambient drone operating in music today.

Rare Bird
Epic Forest
PS, UK Though it made little commercial impact on its release in 1972, Rare Bird's 'Epic Forest' has since been widely acclaimed as a classic of the pre-punk era: a unique album that fuses the emotional reach of classical music with the harmonies of Sixties pop. This album is somewhere between Procol Harum, The Moody Blues and West Coast Psychedelia, and 'Epic Forest' is one of the masterpieces of progressive rock (file under prog and sunshine pop). We are restoring it to the catalogue in its classic form with three superb additional tracks that were given away as a 33rpm 7" with the first edition of the original album.
