Homesick is the long-awaited third album from local space cowboys Tractor Kings, led by Illinois alt.country icon Jacob Fleischli and his assembled hombres. Purveyors of echoing folk-rock, rollicking rave-ups and Cosmic Americana ballads connect the dots with a a harrowing cover of Dylan's "Masters of War". Eleven songs that inhabit a flickering psychedelic underworld of reverbs, delays, strings and an evangelical pedal steel. We don't call it 'rural cathedral' for nothing.

31Knots
Worried Well
PS, US Further explorations of "post-apocalyptic Vaudevillian punk" and demented pop, but with a twist. Plainly stated, 31Knots hasn't moved in a new direction so much as they've ripened to full maturity, evolved into the creature they're meant to be. Previous efforts are just as tightly wrapped, just as fierce and incendiary. But something is different. Something here is new. It deserves to be called out as thought provoking and well written music in a time when substance is quickly giving way to music of commerce and palatability. There is no band like 31Knots and Worried Well finds them at the full height of their powers.

5th Dimension
The Magic Garden
PS, UK Wow! Here at Rev-Ola we're proud to present this true undisputed classic of orchestrated, psych-tinged soft pop. The 5th Dimension are one of the most successful American bands of the late '60s. Hey, everybody knows their hit versions of 'Up, Up And Away' and 'Aquarius'! However, in 1968 they were teamed up with producer Bones Howe and wunderkind composer/arranger/all-round bona fide musical genius beyond redoubt, Jimmy Webb, who presented them with a complex song cycle based on his own tumultuous relationship with his partner. Nestling between such dyed-in-the-wool classics as 'Carpet Man', 'The Girls' Song', 'The Worst That Could Happen' (which all became hit singles for other artists) and the life-affirming title track (as covered by Dusty Springfield no less) are such lesser-spotted Webb gems as 'Summer's Daughter' and 'Paper Cup'. The whole cycle is linked with beautifully ornate pieces of orchestration, sitar flourishes and ethereal vocals. The contractual obligation inclusion of an earlier recording of The Beatles' 'Ticket To Ride' was originally shoehorned into the middle of the running order but we've taken the liberty of shuffling it to the end so it no longer interrupts the flow of the cycle.

Bipolaroid
'E(i)ther Or'
PS, US Amid the local masses of hornblowers, washboard scratchers and swamp-pop stars, Ben Glover stands out like, well, the one guy making pastoral, British Invasion psych/rock in a southern jazz-and-zydeco province. His band Bipolaroid made a grand entrance with 2003's Transparent Make-believe, likely the most authentic Syd Barrett shrine ever to emerge from the muddy banks of the Mississippi. Reborn as a five-piece band, the group finally follows up its singular gem with an album whose mark remains the same but whose aim has shifted slightly. E(i)ther Or is an altogether messier, more chaotic affair " intentionally so, Glover might add. The songwriter sings in a blurry slur, with a sleepy, faux-English accent that frames vintage-sounding instruments and paisley melodies in a perfectly hazy Pink Floyd daydream.

Black To Comm
Fractal Hair Geometry
PS, GERMANY Black To Comm is the solo venture of Dekorder label boss Marc Richter. With two and a half albums released on his own label he has established himself as one of the most prolific drone artists out there with a forthcoming album on the American Digitalis label, a collaborative CD with Datashock on Ikuisuus, a 7" on the Irish Trensmat label and a collaboration with Xela in the works "Fractal Hair Geometry" is Richter's most refined and original work to date, picking up where the electrifying drone works of his monumental Double-LP left off. Like the last records this album is centered around recordings of a variety of vintage organs. While "Wir können leider..." often featured pure harmonium sounds and spacious recordings of chuch organ and mellotron, the new album opts for a more electronic, effects-laden sound, sending an old Farfisa Compact Deluxe and Casio SK-5 through an armada of analogue & digital effects pedals. The results are massive one-chord drones layered into dense & ecstatic, flickering & pulsating clusters of psychedelic electronic sound. Additional wordless vocal effects, hyperventilating & sizzling drum machines and hypnotic violin and guitar noises make for a hyperactive sound that never stands still even though most of the music is pure drones (sometimes consisting of more than 50 recording layers). Decidedly simple but gorgeous melodies shine through the mist from time to time, making a Black To Comm record always much more accessible than your average drone album. There's even a heavy 4/4 bass drum smuggled into a track dedicated to the late Leigh Bowery, one of the most enigmatic creative figures of the mid-80's UK club scene (and singer of Minty). Guests include Jonna Karanka (aka Kuupuu) on piano, Guido Möbius on trumpet and current Black To Comm (live) band members Renate Nikolaus on violin and Ulf Schütte (of Datashock, Aosuke, etc.) adding electronic sounds. Along the lines of the music, seminal German artist Oliver Ross has created a massive multi-layered neon-coloured collage artwork that is printed on special ultra-heavy cardboard stock.

Bongripper
Heroin
US, PS Beware. Seasoned proto-metal doommeisters get their drone on; tinkering with the void, incontinent within the continuum and messing with the matrices. No voice, just monstrous riffs and glassy-eyed psychedelic noise-ambient minimalism. Not the Heroin Kit, just the tunes and artwork in a glassine sleeve, originally released in 2007, CDR repress, limited to 100.

Bongripper
Hippie Killer
PS, US Remember smokin' up and and between hits you'd do nitrous and the oxygen deprivation/depravation tuned your brain strings to a drop L? Remember? Did you even understand the question? Dude? Hello? 10 tracks released in 2007, a massiveness that encompasses 79 minutes, more than enough time to alter your state and wallow in its weird. Chicago doom/sludge mob Bongripper's proto-metal-postrock, sub-sub-Sabbath subterraneanisms, rapturous ambient blissing and hellacious heaviosity will show your speakers who's boss. Your subwoofer will thank you later.

Bongripper
Hate Ashbury
PS, US You'll be leveled, you'll be razed, your body will begin to break down at a molecular level... The latest release from Chicago's Bongripper finds these hippy-hostile gents conjuring epic, instrumental, proto-stoner manifestos that span riff-laden doom, spacey postrock jams, inebriating psych weirdness, sublime ambient gravitas and outright noise/drone freefall. Playing from their grinding guts they have created an album of nameless songs that drives like a ginormous tank-treaded weaponized concept car in Hades. I don't doubt that Pelican is scared of Bongripper's musical molten lava, they are a twee-pop band in comparison. Electric Wizard isn't scared exactly, but then again they don't have to share a fucking city with Bongripper now do they?

Booker T. & the MG's
Green Onions
PS, US Propelled by Booker T. Jones' smoky organ and the funky guitar bursts of Steve Cropper, "Green Onions"-the first chart-topper by Booker T. & The MG's-slithered across the 1962 airwaves, followed immediately by an album every bit as savory. Hot on the heels of that first MG's smash, here's a second helping, "Mo' Onions," as well as the exquisite pop delights of "Stranger On The Shore" and the unsurpassed after-hours smolder of "Behave Yourself." The original Green Onions LP by the peerless Booker T. & The MG's: exact reproduction available now from SUNDAZED on High-Definition Vinyl, mastered from the absolute vintage analog tapes, and so lip-smacking delicious it'll make you cry.

Brother JT
Purgatory Sweet Purgatory (8")
PS, US Since the late 80's, Eastern Pennsylvania's John Terlesky (a.k.a. JT) has cut a unique path from his garage stomping path of self destruction with his band The ORIGINAL SINS to his more lo-fi & psychedelic impulses released under the Brother JT monkier. An amazing EP of ALL EXCLUSIVE tracks from Ol' JT. 4 song EP features an introspective Velvets infused vibe that's very reminiscent of his 2005 full length effort, Off Blue on Birdman Records. 3 new songs and lusher revision of the song "Throwaway" from his 1999 effort "Way to Go" released on DRAG CITY. Cakebuilder
Feeding The Worms
PS, GERMANY File Under: dubstep, breakcore. From its symphonic opening to its sweeping heavy basses, Cakebuilder's second record for Ad Noiseam shows that things are still deep in Winnipeg. Bridging angry, dark dubstep and a highly melodic drive, Cakebuilder opens a new gate for the genre, where "dub" is replaced by something a lot colder and orchestral. Cinematic dubstep of the blackest shade.

Carter, Susan
Wonderful Dreams And Adventures
PS, UK Along with the likes of Jackie DeShannon, Cass Elliot and Joni Mitchell, Susan Carter was an integral part of the late 1960s Laurel Canyon scene, a veritable "Lady Of The Canyon". Carter captured the attention of Epic Records, who teamed her with producer Les Carter and arranger Dick Halligan (of Blood, Sweat & Tears fame). Recorded in New York, her 1970 debut Wonderful Deeds and Adventures - A Collection of Stirring Scene and Moving Accidents was certainly that and more... something of an era timepiece. It was also interesting in that, with backing from Randy Brecker and most of BS&T, material such as Donovan's 'Young Girl Blues', James Taylor's 'Brighten Your Day with My Night' and 'Medley for Billie Holiday' found Carter working in the blues and jazz genres years before Joni Mitchell and other contemporaries made such a move. Carter certainly had a powerful and versatile voice, capable of handling a wide variety of genres and her crystalline voice occasionally recalled Laura Nyro.

Carter, Tom
Shots At Infinity
PS, US Comprised of recordings from various basements in the northeastern US from late 2007. Steering away from the more delicate string environments & modal folk improvisations of previous CDs, the disc features maximum loop delay drone overload stretched over long, densely harmonic tracks, retaining the melodic content & flow of earlier releases. His solo work covers a lot of territory, but latter-day sightings show him concentrating on looped guitar drones of immensely stacked beauty, w/heaps of psychedelic melodic content missing from the repertoires of many noise & drone bands.

Carter, Tom
Shots At Infinity 2
PS, US This is the companion release to the Tom Carter CD titled Shots At Infinity 1 being release on Important simultaneously. Shots at Infinity 2 is two long live tracks in the same mode as Shots At Infinity 1, but more cut loose and blown out, recorded in Nemo Bidstrup's record store and Burnt Hills' basement jam zone. Tom Carter is a guitar player best known for his work with acclaimed psych-drone iconoclasts Charalambides. Since 2000, however, he has become increasingly active as not only a solo artist but as a collaborator. He has performed with improvising musicians as diverse as Thurston Moore, Jandek, Tetuzi Akiyama, Matt Valentine, and many others, as well as being a key member in groups like Badgerlore (with Ben Chasny of Six Organs of Admittance), Friday Group, Mudsuckers (with Robert Horton and the Yellow Swans), and Zaika (with Marcia Bassett of the Double Leopards and Hototogisu). Carter's solo work covers a lot of territory, but latter-day sightings show him to be concentrating on looped guitar drones of immensely stacked beauty, with heaps of psychedelic melodic content missing from the repertoires of many noise and drone bands. His influences include everyone from LaMonte Young to David Crosby.

Cocteau, Jean & Les Six
Once Upon A Time
PS, UK Paris 1919. Playwright, novelist, poet, surrealist, filmmaker and self-publicist Jean Cocteau was the literary spokesman for Les Six. With his endorsement, and the inspiration of Erik Satie and fired by the principles of Dada and surrealism, the group, comprising Francis Poulenc, Arthur Honegger, Darius Milhaud, Georges Auric, Germaine Tailleferre and Louis Durey, expressed their irreverence towards the twin specters of lifeless tradition and bloodless modernism. They embraced the previously forbidden worlds of popular song, 'primitive' music and jazz and in so doing, helped purge the classical music establishment of its deeply ingrained snobbery and pave the way for generations of iconoclasts - in classical, jazz and rock music - still to come. Our edition comprises famous examples of the work of this group of composers who so scandalized twenties Paris Pacific 231, Les Biches, Le Boeuf sur le Toit and La Creation du Monde along with themes from Georges Auric's scores for Cocteau's the very influential surrealistic film fantasies; Orphée (Orpheus), La belle et la bête (Beauty and the Beast) and L'aigle à deux têtes (The Eagle has Two Heads).

Cold Sun
Dark Shadows
PS, US "First time available on CD, Cold Sun from Austin, Texas was recorded in 1970 in the legendary Sonobeat studios, where the Mariani and Johnny Winter first LPs were produced. The Cold Sun band are considered contemporaries of Velvet Underground and The Fugs, often listed as being in a similar vein but inspirations for this unique piece actually go back to the desperate, haunted Joe Meek. All songs lyrically express dark, mystic poetry with the true '60s psychedelic floating/distorted fuzz spirit presented in short compact mini-epics along with several mind blowing long tunes, such as 'Ra-Ma' (11 min.), 'Here In The Year' (9 min.) and 'Fall' (7 min.). Discovered by Rockadelic Records of Dallas, Texas in 1991, the Dark Shadows album saw the light of day the next year as a limited LP version, to become today one of the most important and revered US psychedelic underground albums from the early '70s. Rockadelic heard it in the form of an old scratchy acetate that one of the Cold Sun band members had made in order to be able to play the recording at friends` parties on their turntables. The acetate only contained 2/3 of the songs but so greatly impressed them that Rockadelic managed together with bandleader Bill Miller to release the complete sessions from master tapes. Autoharp wizard Miller eventually spearheaded Roky Erickson's international debut as the Cold Sun band joined forces with Roky in 1974 and became BliebAlien, later evolved into The Aliens and backed Roky on his famous albums and historical concerts. Carefully remastered from the master tapes, this album will bring new rewarding listening experiences in expanded fidelity, plus 2 unreleased non-album songs, authentic Live/Concert recordings of 'Live Again' (10 min.) and 'Mind Aura' (7 min.). The fidelity of these reel to reel live recordings is also remarkable. The CD and Vinyl issues will both have an extended booklet/insert with liner notes by Jello Biafra plus rare photos and other surprises. According to Patrick (Lama) Lundborg from Lysergia.com: 'Best Rockadelic LP ever, and in my opinion the best Texas LP of the time.' Enjoy this ONE-HOUR psychedelic Happening, a 'must-have' '60s/'70s heavy uber-psych masterpiece!"

Cross, Milton
Light in the West
PS, US Originally self-released in a limited CDR format, now remastered & reworked & reborn in this new skin. Cross (TARENTEL, DIAL SQUARE, PARTY OF DOOM) does his best work when he's playing his violin or harmonium -he's classically trained & his skill is immediately apparent. Both instruments permeate the album, adding a thick layer of glowing warmth to the songs which they haunt. From the heartbreaking opener, "It's Been Almost a Year" to the quiet, wavering whispers of "Future Ghost," Cross has created an album full of endless layers & organic details. Limited to 500 copies

Earth to the Dandy Warhols
PS, US Now acting as masters of their own destiny, The Dandy Warhols are back and ushering in a rockin return to form with Earth to the Dandy Warhols, the band s debut on their newly minted label, Beat The World Records. The album is quintessential Dandys, pulling together the diverse sounds and influences that have always characterized their music, and full of the same dry vigor that s made them world famous. From the Some Girls-era Rolling Stones-meets-Talking Heads Welcome to the Third World, to the campy Mis Amigos, to the psychedelic rock of Beast of Saints, Earth to the Dandy Warhols is pleasure ride that allows you to fully enjoy the trip while still keeping you on your toes. Freedom's Children
Retrospective [3 CD boxset] VERY LIMITED!
PS, GERMANY Deluxe 3CD box set edition of these albums, previously issued on vinyl by Shadoks. These 3 CDs will also be available separately, but this version puts these together in a heavy cardboard box, like the Blops CD on Shadoks. This box set edition is limited to 300 copies. Shadoks Music presents all three records by Freedom's Children, now collected together, after two years of struggle and hard work with tons of help from collectors in South Africa, England, Austria and the U.S.A. Since all mastertapes were lost in a big fire, they had to be mastered from the original vinyl, using two or three mint copies of each album to make the best possible sounding product. All three albums are the most wanted albums ever from South Africa. Some call them "The Pink Floyd of South Africa," and if the political situation in S.A. at that time would have been easier, they would have had the same status in the international music market as Pink Floyd. Beautifully composed songs, amazing instrumentation, well-crafted guitar work and great singers. The extra-heavy prog sound beats most albums in the same direction coming from the UK or U.S.A. Three absolute masterpieces. LIMITED TO 300 COPIES!!!

Golden Animals
Free Your Mind And Win A Pony
PS, US Golden Animals have delivered their debut album, " Free Your Mind And Win A Pony." The album is 11 tracks deep, entrenched with pre-war blues influenced, classic rock and roll. Fans of their sold out E.P. will dig the sonic transition of this mystical, desert dwelling, rock and roll duo. Produced by Chris Coady. (Yeah Yeah Yeah's, T.V On The Radio, Entrance) mixed by Thom Monahan (Devendra Banhart, Vetiver) The music press have been quite impressed- "Make no mistake: this is psychedelic pop-rock for the flower generation, still going strong in 2008. It is pure old style California: all guitar driven attitude, and bluesy stomp. " Bearded. Press Coverage includes Blender, NME, Mojo, Anthem, Dazed and Confused, and Drowned in Sound. Pitchfork called Golden Animals a "dusty California guitar nugget." Available in CD wallet or 180 Gram LP. (limited 500 press). Produced by Chris Coady (TV on The Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs). Mixed By Thom Monahan (Pernice Brothers, Devendra Banhart). Press Quotes: "When they rock out in the faux-blues readymade "The Steady Roller," you can practically inhale the pungent aroma of their pirate shirts. They're a marriage made in psychedelic desert-blues heaven." Blender "unpolished sound from ghostly echoes of 60's West Coast Psychedelia 50's rock and roll and swampy old blues. They have a nice, semi-chaotic way about them" Mojo "Their ragged eclecticism is a winning one, taking detours into slide country, beat up folk and starry desert ballads" Uncut "Make no mistake: this is psychedelic pop-rock for the flower generation, still going strong in 2008. It is pure old style California: all guitar driven attitude and bluesy stomp. Free Your Mind and Win a Pony has got all the hip-slung fun and holler of alt scene favourites, The White Stripes, but presents itself without dark edges." Bearded "Psychedelic blues-rock, long on reverb and chugga-lugga drum/guitar rhythms okayed by the light of a baritone moon" Independent on Sunday "Delicately crafted songs such as such as Follow Me Down are interspersed with chugging psychedelic blues and infectious, mescalin-aroundthe- campfire feel." The Guardian "Transcends the limitations of their rudimentary set up. Album highlight "Queen Mary (The Flop) features multiple tempo changes and builds to an electrifying frenzy which must go down a storm in a live setting. "Ride Easy" begins as a tender country plodder, but undertakes several detours with satisfying results" DrownedInSound.com "An intense blend of scratchy blues riffs, woozy psych, and walloped drums" NME "They know how to riff with atomic force" Dazed and Confused

Hanson, Jeff
Madam Owl
PS, US This album does not mark a radical departure from his previous two records, as the essential elements are still here. The bare acoustic prettiness of his debut "Son" and the handcrafted pop cleverness of "Jeff Hanson" have been developed further. June, Sarah
This Is My Letter To The World
PS, US Singer-songwriter seems too common a term to apply to SARAH JUNE, however accurate it may be. Singer-songwriter she is, but the songs she writes and sings are both more beautiful and more haunting than the average fare. There is an uncommon ghostly air to her album. Like the smell of flowers in a empty and abandoned house where sunlight comes shining through dusty window panes. Perfectly sparse and lonesome, these songs come from the edges of dreamland.

Laghonia
Glue
PS, Germany "The core of Laghonia is a combination of Peruvian and US members, Saul Cornejo Vocals, Guitar, Manuel Cornejo on Drums, and David Levene on Lead Guitar and Vocals. All eight album tunes were released on 45´s under the group name New Juggler Sound. When the band changed name into Laghonia in 1970 the Glue album came out as a kind of New Juggler Sound 45 rpm compilation. The music is catchy psychedelic Rock´n´Roll stuff, with lyrics in English, intense fuzz, wah-wah Guitars, Hammond B-2 organ and a massive, variative percussion sounds. The songwriting is Beatles/Yardbirds-influenced and the music goes into Santana, Cream, Hendrix and other different directions. 4 bonus tracks and a bio round off this masterpiece of the complete New Juggler Sound recordings perfectly. Comes in a high quality digipak cover (same material as the Mystic Siva CD) with an extra 8 page booklet and amazing original artwork by M. Cornejo. Lindstrom
Where You Go I Go Too
PS, US Well known for his epic & ultra melodic disco, it might come as a surprise that this album only contains three long tracks, with the opening track being almost 29 minutes long! But when you listen to this album, you hear that it is still very much Lindstrom... just more Lindstrom--bigger, longer, more epic & more melodic. PITCHFORK: "the missing link between the modern classical works of Steve Reich and Tangerine Dream's cheesy grandeur, resulting in a fist-pumping, hyper-cosmic space-disco epic that conjures both the retro-futurism of Logan's Run and Manuel Göttsching's influential 1981 electro-prog mammoth E2-E4."

Lykke Li
Youth Novels
PS, US New album from hyped Swedish siren! ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Advance hype fueled by the Little Bit EP had Lykke Li pegged as the next in a growing string of cool-kid-approved perfect-pop fixes to leak out from Sweden's endless supply, but Youth Novels doesn't entirely play out as expected, with neither Robyn's electronic dance-pop precision nor the affable strumming of Jens Lekman or Peter Björn and John (whose Björn Yttling handles production duties here and co-wrote every track). Although it does bear some traces of these approaches, as well as El Perro Del Mar's earnest melancholia, it's decidedly odder and harder to pin down, proffering an idiosyncratic, stripped-down vision of pop that foregrounds repetition and simplicity over familiarity or even melody (though rest assured, there is ample catchiness to be had here)."

Makoto, Kawabata & Michishita Shinsuke
Basement Echo
PS, US Basement Echo is the historical meeting point of two generations of the Japanese underground. Kawabata Makoto, leader of The Acid Mothers Temple, and Michishita Shinsuke, leader of LSD March, are together here for the first time in a guitar duo. Though Kawabata and Michishita are from the same scene the fact that they are from different generation means that they bring different energy to the collaborations. This fact is extremely exciting for Kawabata who refers to Michishita as "one of the most promising musicians in the Japanese Underground." Both artists agree that Basement Echo was a step into the unknown with neither really knowing what the resulting sounds would be. For Michishita the collaborations have been a dream come true. He describes Kawabata as having a "soul of rock that never burns out." After the recordings were complete the two friends sat down and raised a triumphant toast. Recorded at Snowflake Sound in Sapporo in October of 2007. Totally improvised with no editing/overdubbing. Designed by Darryl Norsen.

This was a personal experiment, never originally intended for release, but it turned out to be an interesting record in its own right". Well-written songs combine perfectly with the jammy SF ballroom sound popular among the Jesus Music bands, recalling the mellow aspects of Moby Grape in particular. The epic, spine-chilling title track is especially good. A loose, understated live in the basement recording adds to the appeal. This album is undoubtedly one of the classics from the era." --Acid Archives. "As with all Erebus Records titles, this was remastered at the legendary Abbey Road Studios. Mercury Rev
Yerself Is Steam/Lego My Ego [expanded re-issue]
PS, UK We can't be the only Rev-heads who need a fresh copy of this stunning early 90s proto-prog psych-weird masterpiece, can we? 2007 Special Edition three-disc package (two CDs and a NTSC/Region 0 DVD) of the classic 1991 debut album from the Alternative weirdoes. The second CD, Lego My Ego (a much sought-after collection of rarities and radio sessions), has been unavailable for 12 years while the DVD, which features rare video clips, has never been released before!

Lego My Ego tracklist: 1. If You Want Me to Stay (Sly Stone cover, from Rough Trade Singles Club) / 2. Shh-Peaceful...Very Sleepy Rivers (live medley includes Miles Davis cover) / 3. Frittering (BBC Session) / 4. Coney Island Cyclone (BBC Session) / 5. Car Wash Hair / 6. Syringe Mouth (BBC Session) / 7. Blood on the Moon (Theme from Moonbuggy soundtrack) / 8. Chasing a Bee (BBC Session)

ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Music dictated not by logic but by intuition, Yerself Is Steam is an album at war with itself, split by its desire to achieve both melodic pop bliss and white-noise transcendence within the same space; it succeeds brilliantly, avant-bubblegum fuel injected by fits and flourishes of prismatic chaos. From the comic malevolence of David Baker's mad-scientist creations to Jonathan Donahue's opiate lullabies, Yerself Is Steam is vividly cinematic -- between the roller coaster feedback of "Coney Island Cyclone" and the narcoleptic ebb and flow of the climactic "Very Sleepy Rivers," the songs perfectly evoke their titular aspirations; likewise, from the album title (say it out loud) onward, the lyrics revel in the quirks and idiosyncrasies of language, buoyed by a homophonous prankishness and dada rhyme schemes, which, in their own odd way, suggest a kind of poetry. A near-perfect debut from a band that would only get better from here on out... Some foreign releases include the bonus disc Lego My Ego, a crazy quilt knitted together from unlikely covers (Sly Stone's "If You Want Me to Stay," Miles Davis' "Shhh/Peaceful"), Peel Sessions highlights, and wonderfully loopy studio chatter."

Moondoggies
Don t Be A Stranger
PS, US Seattle's Moondoggies play timeless American music. Warm three-part harmonies, gothic Rhodes organ, and wanderlust guitar mark a sound rooted in boogie blues and cosmic country. Whipsmart songwriting leads to hook-heavy tunes that bristle with originality. Shades of gospel, blues, rock, and country commingle, and wall-of-sound harmonies radiate joy and passion. The influences of The Band, The Byrds, and especially early Grateful Dead are evident, though The Moondoggies' lyrical economy and compositional sensibility render these tracks fresh and unique.

Unearthed, remastered and now released for the first time-its ageless qualities shine as brightly as ever.

Outrageous Cherry
Wide Awake in the Spirit World: Best Of Outrageous Cherry
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Detroit psychedelic pop outfit Outrageous Cherry have been crafting their own version of the Nuggets box since they dropped their reverb-drenched self-titled debut on Bar/None in 1994. Driven by the immaculate pop craftsmanship of guitarist/singer Matthew Smith, the group's penchant for early-Bee Gees melodies, Velvet Underground freakouts, and Galaxie 500-induced dream sequences changed little throughout the years, which makes the career-spanning Wide Awake in the Spirit World: The Best of Outrageous Cherry -- released on Steven Van Zandt's Wicked Cool Records no less -- such a solid listen."

Pets, The
Misdirection
PS, US The Pets are full of smart hooks and contagious songs. Featuring a pedigreed lineup of Zack from the FM Knives, Vince from Short Eyes, and Dan Wood (a close relative of the Spits' Erin & Sean Wood for those keeping track...) from Right On. These guys know exactly how to turn your stomach and create some really epizootic waves of deliriously dirty pop snarl. Not content to retread the paths of any of their previous bands, the Pets are all on the same page and their simple and voraciously catchy songs will knock you into submission over and over again on each side of this record.

Phantasia
Phantasia
PS, US Reissue of US psychedelic ultra rarity recorded 1971/72. The original albums (a complete one and a one-sided) are legends for all psychedelic/garage collectors, only 25 copies pressed of each -- not many people have the pleasure of having seen a copy. The music is creeping slowly and sensitively in your mind, whether stoned or not ö it takes you wherever you want. Those are the complete sessions, 55mins in mastertape quality presented the first time to the public -- extremely informative booklet (20 sided), with outstanding artwork and color photos. One of the best Psychedelic albums, playing in the same league as Fraction, Music Emporium, Hunger, Mystic Siva, Damon. Later the band changed into Trizo 50 that will also be released on WIS. For us unbelievable that this extremely talented band didn't make it.

Pink Reason
Winona
PS, US "During a show with hardcore punks Hatefuck, DeBroux and company traveled to Winona, Minnesota. After a five-hour drive to the town, wasted locals, angry punks and gnarled three-legged dogs greeted them
by leading them into a commandeered park. Inside the park, DeBroux found "the ultimate punk rock experience" with townies huffing rubber glue and mohawk-brandishing kids starting fights with crusties. The show ended and the locals gave the band three dollars for their troubles. A few kids asked DeBroux and company to chip in the three dollars on a keg. Soon, the crowd dispersed and left the band with no money or place to stay. The band wound up sleeping on an island between Minnesota and Wisconsin and breaking up soon thereafter. He wrote the first Pink Reason song, "Winona," about this experience." - Steve Kobak from Blastitude #25

Plastic Crimewave Sound
Plastic Crimewave Sound
PS, US At last, a new LP from Chicago's spacepunk purveyors! Following '06s sprawling double concept LP, No Wonderland, this is perhaps their most consistent and paint-peeling statement yet. These tracks were captured with little studio trickery, in a live-type fashion, a set of bellowing free-fest scuzzrock, biker boogie, Kraut-style dirges, cosmic communal jams, and fist-pumping no-anthems. This is easily the most seriously rocking Plastic Crimewave Sound line-up yet, with hot new leads courtesy of Nick D'vyne, and the solid backbone of PCW (guitarscrawl, yelps) Mark Lux (bass rumblage, electronix) and Lawrence (Skog Device) Peters (drum). Folks have actually been clamoring for this line-up to lay it down to wax (especially the aforementioned anthemic cut 'Shockwave Rider') for some time, so get ready to explode into space. Pocahaunted
Island Diamonds
PS, US There's a working theory out there about Pocahaunted: either every record they've released is a concept album, or none of them are. There's good proof to support both camps. The truth, of course, might lie somewhere in between the two (if that's possible -- which it probably isn't), but Island Diamonds makes a stronger case for the former. The ladies' longstanding studio union with Eagle Rock guru Bobb Bruno has explored an array of terrains in the past, but their partnership on Diamonds... transformed Pocahaunted into a way weirder, doper, and dancier creature than ever before, inspired in equal parts by Manda's obsession with Max Romeo tropical soul and bad acid jazz and Bethany's abiding love of mainstream rap and the Cocteau Twins (that sounds like it'd be a nightmare, right?). Naturally, the results don't really resemble any of the influences they may have attempted to channel during these sessions, but so what? Low-lidded drum machine beats, sparse guitar chimes, and the occasional air-raid siren cycle beneath a night sky of cooing, crying, and caterwauling in the classic PHAUNT mode/model. This CD digipak edition is a repress of the sold out LP on Arbor, with all new collage-portrait artwork by the band, plus two bonus tracks added on (one an outtake from the Diamonds sessions, one the unedited mix of their Bored Fortress 7" single) and a freaky digital music video for 'Ashes Is White' created by part-time Pocahaunted bassist/best friend Luis Naranjo. Edition of 500.

Ra Ra Riot
Rhumb Line
PS, US Their self-titled EP (sold mostly at venues) & the dark-edged joyfulness of their live shows (which feature a kickass co-ed bass-guitardrums-vocal-cello-violin lineup) has garnered acclaim from high-profile media. This is their full-length debut, which features 9 originals & the best Kate Bush cover you've ever heard ("Suspended in Gaffa").
PREFIX MAG: "A quick blast of regal pop that's sure to set indie-loving hearts aflutter... Ra Ra Riot meld the literary rock of the Smiths with the syncopated new wave of the Police and toss in stringed orchestral instruments like cello and violin. Shapeshifter Slave
PS, US Shapeshifters are messengers and imitators of the gods. Shapeshifters can be divine or human. Crossing boundaries between sacred and evil, they often bring messages, power or punishment from the gods. Shapeshifting is used to gain access to the tower. They are able to turn any situation around. Nothing is too much or too little. The shapeshifter can invert a life-threatening situation into one where he triumphs. This form of shapeshifting is most commonly painless but can be traumatic if the change was unintentional; clothing is rarely lost in this process. Rodriguez
Cold Fact
PS, US It's one of the lost classics of the '60s, a psychedelic masterpiece drenched in colour & inspired by life, love, poverty, rebellion, and, of course, "jumpers, coke, sweet mary jane". The album is Cold Fact & what's more intriguing is that its maker - a shadowy figure known as Rodriguez - was, for many years, lost too. A decade ago, he was rediscovered working on a Detroit building site, unaware that his defining album had become not only a cult classic, but for the people of South Africa, a beacon of revolution. Co-produced by Beastie Boys/Mos Def sample heavy guitarist Dennis Cofffey. Featuring legendary Motown players The Funk Bros. Shades Of Brown
S. O. B.
PS, US "A lost nugget from the Chicago soul scene, and one of the rarest '70s albums on Chess! The album's filled with great tracks in a range of soul styles -- sweet, funky, and Northern Soul -- all wrapped together with a tightness that rivals The Dells or Temptations at their best, and topped with harmony vocals that are simply mindblowing. Producer Bobby Miller really helps the group find their groove -- and arrangements by Richard Evans and Charles Stepney tie the whole thing together beautifully. All tracks are originals, and completely fresh -- the kind of lost soul tunes you'd normally find only by digging through a pile of rare 45s. Sampled famously by Tribe Called Quest and others -- and reissued here for the first time ever!"

Snakegrinder
Snakegrinder & The Shredded Fieldmice
PS, US "Every burg in the '70s that had a steady supply of weed and electricity undoubtedly provided a birthing ground for the formation of bands influenced by the likes of Jerry Garcia and Lowell George, and the Delaware area was no different. What was different was that our subjects-at-hand got it together and in 1977 released an unassuming document for posterity, containing nothing but original, winding (dare we say 'snake-like?') compositions and good vibes throughout. Since then, the album has garnered accolades from the Acid Archives crowd and so we felt the time was right to give the group's efforts a proper (and properly licensed from the band) presentation, with an 'old-style' heavy mini-LP sleeve and thick booklet containing pics, gig posters, song lyrics and liner notes by producer and long-time fan, Gregor Alligator. In addition, we've added a half-hour of unreleased live tracks from the same era, and everything you hear (album and bonus) was transferred from the mastertapes '...with love and anarchy!'"

Souls On Board
Blood Face
PS, AUSTRALIA Like some unholy breeding ground, SOULS ON BOARD are loyal to an ever-evolving matrimony - beauty and dirt, ugliness and invention, dumb and smart, mind-blowing power and grace. BLOOD FACE is the new EP, the Melbourne group's second release after their "hurtling and assured" self-titled EP debut of 2005. Released by wunderkinds Low Transit Industries, the EP saw the band draw comparisons to The Pixies & Sonic Youth. BLOOD FACE picks up the hazardous extremes of that first rugged EP and beats them into a new shape. A shape with pointed edges, electricity in the veins and a wall of psychedelic sound bubbling under a whip-smart guitar bleed section. While the tunes bulge with shining phrases & stirring twists, lyrically BLOOD FACE grapples with dark visions and uncomfortable realities - these ills given some respite by the pop playfulness of the 6 tracker.

Sun Araw
Boat Trip
PS, US Boat Trip might be some hidden soundtrack to Donkey Kong, warp-whistling straight into Ayahuasca Country. In about twenty minutes, Sun Araw manages to navigate a psychedelic jungle cruise through canopy din & spooked drone, then he noses the boat out of the water and lifts into uncharted dub-spheres. The back half of this entranced tour is like being (fortunately) trapped inside an old Upsetters jam played at half-speed with twice the shaman-chant and reverb-drenched percussion. Normally we wouldn't trust taking this kind of trip with just anybody, but with wheel and rudder alike in the hands of Magic Lantern co-captain Cameron Stallones, we can sip our yage-of-choice in peace and share the Sun Araw vision as one. Sweet, Matthew
Sunshine Lies (ON SALE)
PS, US SPECIAL PRE-ORDER PRICE, GOOD UNTIL 9/2! New album from Matthew Sweet joined by Susanna Hoffs, Ric Menck and Richard Lloyd. Pretty Parasolly, dontcha think? Without warning, this consummate artist just may have made the album of his life, not by consciously trying to recapture the brilliance of his three milestones, Girlfriend, Altered Beast and 100% Fun, but simply by following his big heart, while hot-wiring the process between inspiration and execution so that there's no longer any distance between them. With tongue only partly in cheek, Matthew describes the new record's sound as "power-pop-folk-rock-psychedelic-melodic-singer-songwriter-type stuff." That turns out to be an accurate general description, but the real intrigue is in the details. By turns achingly melodic and drivingly visceral, Sunshine Lies swirls with relatable emotion and bad-ass attitude, seamlessly incorporating the artist's expansive aesthetic from one end (poetry) to the other (noise). On Sunshine Lies, Sweet intermixes his distinctive brand of shimmering folk rock ("Byrdgirl," "Daisychain," "Around You Now") and signature goosebump ballads ("Feel Fear," "Pleasure Is Mine," "Back of My Mind"), with the album's primary impulse, what he refers to as "the crazy songs." These are heady, arrangement-based pieces where anything goes in terms of tone, texture and performance-the mindblowing "Time Machine," the balls-to-the-wall "Room to Rock," the brawny "Flying" and the Who-like "Let's Love."

Tiffany Shade, The
S/T
PS, US Exact repro 180 gram virgin vinyl pressing. "In the fall of 1967, The Tiffany Shade consisted of Bob Leonard, Tom Schuster, Mike Barnes and new bassist Robb Murphy." "...A rather charming teen garage presentation of what is economy fare West Coast folkrock-psych sounds, plus a bunch of tracks that make no sense at all. LP opens strongly with several raw trips on the early Airplane style; cutting fuzz leads and excellent Nuggets vocals should appeal to anyone. Side 2 is less garagey & more goofy top 40, but listenable with class points reaped for a Love cover. All over a bit better than I expected, with some prime slices of '60s cheese-psych. Tokens
Both Sides Now
PS, UK The title kind of gives the game away here, it being somewhat a game of two halves! A semi concept follows the title of the exquisite baroque cover of the Joni Mitchell tune...The Tokens are pictured on the cover in off-duty mode, casually dressed and with a cigar on the go. Side one consists of more baroque re-workings of modern folk rock standards, covering label mates Melanie and The Lemon Pipers creditably, as well as doing a stripped down beauty of a cover of 'Don't Worry Baby', which surely influenced The Beach Boys later live revamps of their early repertoire. Side two revisits The Tokens past in the manner of their later 'Oldies Are Now!' project, with their first two hits 'Tonight I Fell In Love' and 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight', and their soft-pop masterpiece 'I Hear Trumpets Blow' among others, being reinvented in the style of side one.

Trad Gras och Stenar
S-T
PS, SWEDEN 1995 reissue of the first Träd Gräs och Stenar album, originally issued on the Decibel label in Sweden in 1970. Their name translates to "trees, grass & stones." A rock group led by Bo Anders Persson (after his works with Pärson Sound, Harvester, International Harvester), this was their first of three albums, a definitely more "rockist" continuation of the post-minimalist experiments of the earlier groups, but still with that undefinable Swedish underground feeling. Similar in vibe to the live document on Subliminal Sounds, Gardet 12.6.1970. This will be the only record in your collection to start off with covers of "All Along The Watchtower" and "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" that you won't want to kill somebody with. Triffids, The
Beautiful Waste: Mini Masterpieces from The Triffids 1982 to 1985 [import]
PS, UK Import version, for those who cannot wait...like Jim. The Triffids recorded a number of works that were less than full length but far from fully formed. They've grouped a number of these under the title Beautiful Waste... Most of the material is heard here for the first time on CD. Included are Raining Pleasure, Lawson Square Infirmary and the Field Of Glass EP. To round off the set we've included the title track and a smash hit single that never was - Dear Miss Lonelyhearts and Native Bride.

Triffids, The
Treeless Plain [expanded re-issue, import]
PS, UK Import version, for those who cannot wait...like Jim. Treeless Plain was recorded in a dozen midnight to dawn sessions with a talented but green engineer, Nick Mainsbridge some 25 years ago. Legend has it that the time left to mix all tracks was 2 hours. Fortunately the 24 track masters were retained and we were able to commission a brand new mix from the now considerably less green Mr Mainsbridge. Wow springs to mind. The original album (plus extra tracks from the same sessions) remixed by the original engineer Mainsbridge, remastered and further expanded with live tracks.

Triffids, The
The Black Swan [expanded re-issue, import]
PS, UK Import version, for those who cannot wait...like Jim. The Black Swan has always been the album that divided Triffids fans - it was an eclectic mix of styles at the time and, though this seems a little less unusual these days, it's still mighty eclectic. Restored to the album Dave and the band had hoped against hope for in 1989 by the addition of 5 songs left out back then - and an encore. Accompanied by a bonus disc of demos and unreleased material. The original album remastered and expanded, 36 tracks in total!

Tussle
Cream Cuts
PS, NORWAY Cream Cuts finds Tussle expanding upon it's own unique mix of drums, bass & electronics, at times echoing the elasticity & straight forward live approach of their debut, Kling Klang, but with more color & complexity, while also integrating the psychedelic pulsating pound heard on Telescope Mind. Moving above & beyond their first two releases, Tussle map out worlds upon worlds on Cream Cuts, riding songs from creation to destruction to rebirth. Thom Monahan's (Vetiver, Joanna Newsom, Silver Jews, Devendra Banhart) unconventional production techniques & talent for capturing intimate performances integrate with Tussle's krauty exploration of rhythm leading to the bands most epic, experimental yet holistic release to date. PREFIX MAGAZINE: "Think of Tussle as the dance-rock libido of the otherwise demure freak-folk movement."

Twilight Sad
Here, It Never Snowed
PS, US A mini-album comprising several re-worked tracks from The Twilight Sad's debut album, Fourteen Albums & Fifteen Winters, as well the heretofore-unheard title track & a cover of Daniel Johnston's classic "Some Things Last A Long Time." The stripped-back instrumentation on Here, It Never Snowed... allows the songs to speak for themselves, taking on a folk-tinged darkness - volume replaced by space and reverb, with chord organ, glockenspiel and minimalist percussion replacing the wall of guitars behind James Graham's Glaswegian burr.

Also, for the first time anywhere, the story of Garden Grove garage rock teens The Spats ('She Done Moved,' 'Gator Tails & Monkey Ribs'), Brooklyn, NY psych rockers The Koala, and '70s NYC punks The Victims. Also on tap, Jon Savage's revealing interview with Beatles publicist Derek Taylor about Brian Epstein, a conversation with Animals guitarist Hilton Valentine, drop-dead delicious '60s beat girl/style icon Gillian Hills, R&B songwriting genius Alonzo B Willis, Mike Hudson of the Pagans, and Johan Kugelberg's countdown of the best junkshop glam rock discs. And there's more. '60s garage rock a-go-go with The Heard ('Stop It Baby'), The Persuaders, The Lost Souls, plus more garage rock history from California's Inland Empire. Also: exotic beat music from Chile and Venezuela, Jack Downing & the Other Side, and Ade Blackburn of Clinic picks his all-time Psychedelic Top 10. Unthank, Rachel & The Winterset
Bairns
PS, US US pressing of their album originally released in the UK in 2007. This is the sophomore release from the Folk/Rock outfit. It follows the incredible success of The Cruel Sister, which was Mojo Magazine's "Folk Album of the Year" in 2005 and announced the arrival of a major new force in the Folk scene. Like so many other Folk artists, the group have moved way beyond the traditional boundaries of the Folk circuit, drawing their audiences from across the spectrum of music lovers. Like Seth Lakeman, they tour constantly and create traditional (and traditionally inspired) music that appeals to both the died-in-the-wool (arran, of course!) Folk fans and to a much younger fanbase. In this light, their covers of songs by Bonnie Prince Billy and Robert Wyatt don't seem out of place in the least. Rachel and her band play Folk that is both traditional and traditionally-inspired, appealing to Folk and singer/songwriter fans across the board. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "It's rare to hear a folk group where piano stands as the central instrument (the fiddle often feels like it's there in a supporting role), but they make it work, and when the sisters harmonize in their singing, it can be quite sublime. Time will shake off the hype that's attended them over the last couple of years, but this is a band with real spark and invention."

Van Dyke Parks
Song Cycle
PS, US Van Dyke Parks' visionary 1968 debut, Song Cycle, rose phoenix-like from the ashes of his fabled Smile collaboration with Brian Wilson. Parks' breathtaking high-wire act fused the pop genius of Phil Spector, Stephen Sondheim's Broadway vertigo and the orchestral flare of American composer Charles Ives and made it wholly his own. Our definitive pressing of this landmark Warner Bros. album is sourced from the original analog master, and pressed on audiophile High-Definition Vinyl.

Based in Houston, Texas the label thrived under the expert guidance of its driving force, Lelan Rogers, brother of country legend Kenny Rogers. Splendid Isolation
PS, SWEDEN A collection of exclusive tracks from the Radio Dept., Testbild!, Most Valuable Players, Differnet, Action Biker, Viktor Sjöberg, VED, Peter Jackson, Peter Nilsson, Redmalm, Enheten för musik och melodi, Malkovic, Erik de Vahl, Band in a Box, Flow Flux Clan, Robotboy, and Jian. Between January and December 2007 Friendly Noise released 18 mp3 singles offered as free downloads from www.friendlynoise.se. From the start it was intended to be a one-year-long project. The idea was simple: contributions chosen by us from our extended family of old friends and new discoveries, usually two songs, together with an introduction by the artists themselves and a picture to illustrate and enhance, once or twice a month. This was meant as a complement to our CD releases, and a chance to easily distribute great songs, in cases where the album context isn't necessary. These two ways of distribution aren't contradictory, they're related, as we stated on our website. Soon we realized the series had become a success, both when it came to the quality of the output and the amount of interest generated. So "Splendid Isolation" - our third compilation after "Friendly People Making Noise" (2003) and "Are You Scared To Get Happy?" (2006) - is our way of documenting the series through a selection of the songs and thus giving them a more official kind of release. The record is also a celebration of five years of Friendly Noise as a label. The order of the songs on the record isn't chronological, it's instead our attempt to make the record sound as good as possible as a whole. TRACKLIST: 1. Bognor Regis (Peter Jackson) 2. (Jack) Lullaby (Viktor Sjöberg) 3. Rondo (Most Valuable Players) 4. Stratoscope (VED) 5. Get Nowhere (Peter Nilsson) 6. Hultviksvägen 7 (Peter Jackson) 7. The Bravest Person I Know (Redmalm) 8. Shut Out (Flow Flux Clan) 9. September (Robotboy) 10. Hashish in Nizza (Peter Jackson) 11. Sol genom lövverket (Enheten för musik och melodi) 12. En gång i Stockholm (Testbild!) 13. Dedicated to Therese Holm (Testbild!) 14. 1959y (Malkovic) 15. Almost Close (Peter Jackson) 16. Open Night (Most Valuable Players) 17. Bachelor Kisses (The Radio Dept.) 18. Trip In Time Vol. 3: Psychedelic Adventures On Planet Earth
PS, GERMANY "This is the third chapter of the 'Trip In Time' psychedelic series, and it's at least as interesting as the previous ones, with only unreleased material! It presents 18 of the recent top Hard-Psych-Garage-Kraut-Underground bands (several from Scandinavia and Germany, but also bands from Spain, France, US, and Peru). Listening to this compilation you will not believe that all these songs are contemporary recordings (most are very well produced but reflect a very intense retro spirit -- nearly unbelievable). The music itself ranges from a hard and heavy Doors sound, Pink Floyd style, blues hard rock a la Mountain, true '60s garage beat but also early Amon Duul 2 of Brainticket flashes. A running time of 78+ minutes and a 12-page booklet will guide the way to the music of tomorrow." A Visit To The Spaceship Factory 20 Gems From The Early Years Of Prog
PS, UK A Visit to the Spaceship Factory presents 20 ear-watering morsels that will thrill and entertain in equal measure. Wander the dimly lit corners of the Spaceship Factory, an establishment designed to produce vehicles that could take you from the geometric wallpaper of your room to the far side of your electric dreams. It wasn't in production for very long, but while it was operating, not only did it manufacture million-selling models such as Yes, Black Sabbath and Jethro Tull, but it brought you the brash rock of Treetops, the polished guitar wizardry of Israeli progsters Jericho, the fuzzed-up dirt of Jesse Hector's proto-punk outfit Helter Skelter, and countless other designs now being re-appraised or still waiting to be recognized. The conveyor belts may be still, the furnaces may be cold, but the ships still fly to the stars. Allergic To Flowers: Garage Beat & Popsike Part 2 1965-68
PS, UK Part two of the first time thematic overview of West Coast independent label Challenge Records. The label hit paydirt in early 1966 when it scored a coast-to-coast hit with The Knickerbockers outstandingly energetic rave up 'Lies.' This riff on The Beatles sound could actually have been The Beatles. Its inclusion on Lenny Kaye's Nuggets set 'Lies' in stone as a all-time classic. Allergic To Flowers: Garage Beat & Popsike celebrates this and the other nuggets that Challenge issued from 1965 to 1968. There's The Brogues paint-peeling punk rocker 'Don t Shoot Me Down' -- the band featured future members of San Francisco legends Quicksilver Messenger Service. Also heard are more irresistible, rockin' and melodic high-energy gems by The Knickerbockers, the absolutely incredible psychedelic punk of Florida band We The People, the tough-as-nails Lindy Blaskey and the Lavells and the superb psychedelic harmonies of Fenwyck's 'Mindrocker.' And then there's the folk rocking and punkish sides recorded by Gene Vincent with Glenn Campbell, as well as The Jefferson Handkerchief's hippy novelty 'I'm Allergic To Flowers.' Allergic To Flowers: Garage Beat & Popsike never lets up. Every cut is a top-drawer winner."

Family Afloat (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 9TH)
PS, US This expresses a crucial personal transition & a collective one. While BOUND STEMS quit their day-jobs to tour relentlessly throughout 2006 in support of their previous album (one that garnered praise from the likes of Rolling Stone, The New York Times, Alternative Press, URB & Chicago Tribune), the band returned home ready for new challenges, & made the communal decision to return to the more stable life of work weeks & strong roots. It was a
choice that also ultimately made the concept of home central to this 2008 album. The songs sound like preparation: the family has grown now, to include new ones being formed in Chicago. But there's no settling down in these songs: family life is raw & confusing, as uncomfortable & unexpected & rewarding as crucial.

Bubblegum Lemonade
Susan's in the Sky EP (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 2ND)
PS, US Scottish wonderkids Bubblegum Lemonade debuted early this year with an outstanding single 'Ten Years Younger' that earned song of the day honors on influential radio station KEXP and amassed countless positive reviews in the music press including favorable comparisons to influential 60's popstars (The Velvet Underground, The Monkees, The Byrds) and 80's indie legends (Jesus and Mary Chain, Razorcuts, Biff Bang Pow!). Before delivering the all important debut album, the band pause for a moment to release a spectacular second EP! Title track 'Susan's In The Sky' is an everyday tale of an airhostess and her slacker boyfriend caught up in a Romeo and Juliet type scenario. It's another sunshine wall of pop with Rickenbacker guitars, tambourines and nice organ bits. A short dose of California sunshine perfect for all seasons. Among the EP's exclusive extra tracks, the cleverly titled 'Surfin' USB' is a proper jangle with fuzzy guitars and a nice Beach Boys coda, while 'Just Like You' continues the California theme in a 150 bpm mini classic drenched in Mary Chain feedback with a mix of fuzz and surf guitars. Closing track 'Holocaust' is a superb cover of the legendary Big Star classic featuring a mix of Rickenbacker and acoustic guitars. Once described as "the perfect C86 pop band that just happened to turn up 22 years behind schedule," Bubblegum Lemonade deliver instantly memorable songs with brilliant pop melodies. 'Susan's In The Sky' is another remarkable success for Matinée and a vibrant reminder of the essential new pop coming out of Scotland. Limited to 1000 copies in custom minijacket sleeve.

California Oranges
Imperial Hearts (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 7TH)
PS, US Our Sacramento, CA indie-pop all stars return with a gem of a pop/rock album full of hooky choruses, call and response guitars and a super tight power-pop rhythm section. A pow-pow-powerful good good feeling! Just as you'd expect from this seasoned music family. Bask in the summer sun with the fourth album from the golden state's California Oranges and a healthy dose of the sunshine power pop they're known for. Underlying the power is a healthy dose of pop: Delicately concocted, contemplative songs exploring life's ups and downs. The quintet has hit their stride on Imperial Hearts. The record features the same line up as their 2005 release Souvenirs: John Conley (Holiday Flyer), Verna Brock (Rocketship, Beanpole, Holiday Flyer, Sinking Ships), Ross Levine (Sinking Ships), Katie Haley (Holiday Flyer, Sinking Ships), and Matt Levine (Sinking Ships). The album was jointly produced by the California Oranges and Dana Gumbiner (Night Night, Deathray). Imperial Hearts was mixed by long time friend of the band, producer/engineer, Eric Stenman (Saves the Day, The Comas, The Cab). The California Oranges construct songs filled with, "soaring boy/girl harmonies, rapid-fire licks of squeaky clean and buzz saw dirty guitar work, consistently up-tempo beats, and melodies that would make tone deaf kitten haters want to sing along" --Popmatters. "Power pop has rarely sounded as sweet." --Treblezine. TRACK LIST: 1. Brand New Spine, 2. We've Got Time, 3. Travel Writer, 4. Anywhere USA, 5. I Still Hold On, 6. Silver Shoes, 7. Feel Better, 8. Waiting Is Slow, 9. I Told Grace, 10. Matter Of Consequence, 11. I Won't Let You Back In, 12. When I Sleep.

Fortune (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 9TH)
PS, US The 11 songs here channel a temporal sense of place & hope over despair. W/the wounded perseverance of Karen Carpenter & the vulnerable, tough-as-nails courage of Heart's Ann Wilson, SARA LUCAS' voice is rich & unforgettable. RYAN SEATON's guitar work is equally engaging, as he masterfully delivers beautiful & unusual chords, gritty distortion, & even intricate flourishes that call to mind the ever-impressive Tinariwen.

Chunklet
#20 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 9TH)
PS, US The final installment in a trilogy of EP's recorded for Acuarela. This is the most commercial & (shockingly) danceable thing they've ever recorded. Part Bacharach, part Television, part Orange Juice, the E.P. shares the pristine clarity, light & shade of 'God Save the Clientele', but adds a new element of summer pop perfection. This is the group as a hazily remembered 1970s cartoon series, all distanced off-key colours; imaginary summer hits, radio waves
beamed in from a dream-discotheque.

Clientele, The
That Night, A Forest Grew (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 9TH)
PS, SPAIN This is the third, and last, of a trilogy of E.P.s the Clientele have recorded for Acuarela. They have always used the Acuarela E.P.s as a way to stretch out between albums, to create a through-the-looking-glass version of the band that shadows the better-known history of their albums. 'Ariadne' experimented with drones and minimalism; 'The Lost Weekend' stretched the foggy sound of their debut to epic proportions. In contrast "That Night, a Forest Grew' is the most commercial and -shockingly- danceable thing they've ever recorded. Part Bacharach, part Television, part Orange Juice, the E.P. shares the pristine clarity, light and shade of 'God Save the Clientele', but adds a new element of summer pop perfection. PS, US Limited edition of 500 copies. Limited edition of 500 copies on 180 gram vinyl. Originally released on cassette in 1984 and then on cd in an edition of 500. In 1984 Vortex Campaign invited Coil and The New Blockaders to collaborate. The result, unofficially referred to as "Dolbied", was released on cassette in an edition of 50. The release has since gone on to become legendary, showcasing two of the most influential groups in the scene at the early stages of their development. "The Melancholy Mad Tenant" is an authorized release, sanctioned by all three groups. Formed in 1983 the output of Coil has ranged from the avant-garde, to experimental neoclassical, to extended excursions into pure electronica. Many bands and composers have cited Coil as an influence. Coil were mainly a studio group, but in 2000 they commenced a successful series of tours that proved to be extremely remarkable events. The New Blockaders began in 1982 with the release of the debut LP "Changez Les Blockeurs" which is cited by many as a defining moment in the history of noise music. TNB have gone on to influence a generation of artists from Japanese noise-maestro Merzbow to noise punks Wolf Eyes.

This album borrows its title from a traditional folk ballad about the Titanic, but it also refers to DESVEAUX's Grandmother, which whom she is very close & who sadly lost her 1st husband at sea. Ever since the release of her debut album & after much touring w/ Bruce Cockburn, Archer Prewitt, Califone & Howe Gelb - Desveaux is now a much more confident bandleader, which is apparent on this album. It is a bold step for her - the song writing is assured &, as always, her voice & range takes center stage - very much influenced & informed by artists like Chrissy Hynde, Wayne Coyne, Neil Young, Gillian Welch & Lucinda Williams.

Donkeys, The
Living On The Other Side (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 9TH)
PS, US If THE DONKEYS' backstory contains those top-down cars and suntanned utopian surf tableaus, it also contains the malaise and the escape fantasies familiar to all suburban kids of the 80s and 90s. Part of this magic comes from the fact that there's no artifice to the Donkeys' songs, from the matter-of-fact breakup blues of "Boot on the Seat" to the playful recollections of a late, drunken night narrated on "Nice Train." These are everyday lives in the postmodern world expressed with a deep respect for classic songs from the 70s through the 90s -- for spacey grooves and soulful, jangly swagger -- that elevates the subject matter beyond the ordinary. "Living on the Other Side", the band's second album, is not meant to hit you over the head with a flamboyant single - instead, imagine Ray Davies jamming with the Byrds, or a Gene Clark-fronted Buffalo Springfield -- and you'll get a sense of the tradition that informs this band.

Durrett, Liz
Outside Our Gates (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 9TH)
PS, US Produced and arranged by indie rock icon, Eric Bachmann (Archers Of Loaf, Crooked Fingers, Azure Ray), "Outside Our Gates" represents a sonic leap forward for Liz Durrett. Her spare, acoustic downbeats have been supplanted by a more textured and diverse orchestra of sounds. A virtual cacophony of instruments are here (strings, wurlitzers, accordions, grand space pianos, and marching drums) and Bachmann's score somehow harmonizes them seamlessly to provide the perfect setting for Liz's near stream of consciousness writings and soft, pitch-perfect voice. Additional performances by Vic Chesnutt, Brian Causey (Man Or Astro-Man?), Amanda Kapousouz (Tin Cup Phrophette), and members of Ham1.

Ewers, Suki
Kind of Hazy (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 23RD)
PS, UK Former member of Opal and Mazzy Star. After performing for several years with Anemone, a band once touted as the missing link in the country music/dream pop connection, Suki spent the last couple of years in the studio working with Joe Kennedy on a set of nine songs. These were eventually sent off to be mixed & masterd by Kramer. The result is hazy, bittersweet pop in the vein of Galaxie 500 & Felt. The songs are at once dreamy & enigmatic yet immediately accessible. Suki manages to evoke much of the same delicately pretty gloominess as Opal while adding her own serenely melodic warmth. "A female-fronted The Clientele with a slightly more American brand of melancholy." -Filter Magazine.

Girl Talk
Feed The Animals (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 23TH)
PS, US Pittsburgh artist Gregg Gillis (a.k.a. Girl Talk) has scrupulously created music from samples for over eight years. His fourth album on the Illegal Art label, Feed the Animals, continues his sonic evolution towards his party-infested live show and steps even closer towards a creation that is centered on pop musicality rather than attention-deficit sample splicing. Girl Talk has been known to underground audiences for several years, but it wasn't until 2006 that Gillis crossed over and caught the attention of a larger audience. With Rolling Stone, SPIN, Blender, Pitchfork, and even Beck including Night Ripper in their "best albums of 2006" lists, Girl Talk has gone on to be booked by major festivals (Coachella, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Virgin, All Points West, Pitchfork, DEMF, etc.), and solicited for remixes (Beck, Thrill Jockey, Tokyo Police Club, Grizzly Bear, Simian Mobile Disco, Peter Bjorn & John, TeddyBears, and Of Montreal). And with roughly 200 live shows over the last couple of years, Gillis has consistently played larger venues to capacity crowds (every date on his 2007 North American tour with Dan Deacon sold out). PRESS QUOTES: "One endlessly entertaining mega mash-up" - Rolling Stone "Gillis' craft is stunning and his tastes are exquisitely diverse" - Blender "A masterpiece that employs an estimated 300 samples" - SPIN "Massively recommended ... the voracious music fan's dream" --- Pitchfork "Media assassins Illegal Art come forth with yet another brilliant Girl Talk record." - XLR8R "Sounds like your favorite mash-up DJ after about 11 espressos" - Entertainment Weekly "Mashes together booty-shaking rap, iconic indie rock, and, uh, ABBA" - MTV.com.

PS, US "All The Way", the debut full-length from GROWING on THE SOCIAL REGISTRY, concludes a epic trip. Through six tracks Kevin Doria and Joe DeNardo complete the conceptual arc initiated on their 2006 album, "Color Wheel". Grubbs, David
Optimist Notes The Dusk (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 23RD)
PS, US "A step into the void" is how Grubbs (GASTR DEL SOL) describes his first solo album since 2004. Here Grubb's presents five longish songs & one eleven-minute instrumental floor rumbler, and the album can't be said to fall in either a pop or experimental genre. Much like Gastr Del Sol's recordings, arrangements take their own sweet, otherworldly time to unfold, and you're likely to discover that the undertow is stronger than you reckoned & that you wind up a

Judys, The
Land Of Plenty [re-issue] (DELAYED, PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 2008)
PS, US First ever official release for The Judys last album, recorded but never released! In 1990, The Judy's set out to record a new album with a new Judy's sound. Featuring the lineup that had been established over a number of years the band, including Barbara Donaho (keyboards/guitars), Lee Malone (bass), and Darwin Keys (drums), set out to explore new horizons musically and thematically. Land of Plenty injected multi-layered keyboards and guitars, stacked vocals, a gospel choir, and even a bit of banjo into the band's palatte and sought to realize Bean's vision of a new Americana musical landscape. Broad in its scope and daring in its expansion of the band's definition of itself, Land of Plenty was shelved when the group disbanded before the CD's release. While a handful of copies have been given out, this is first time this long sought-after project has been available to the general public.

Judys, The
Moo [re-issue] (DELAYED, PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE 2008)
PS, US The original 'Moo' album finally re-issued on CD for the first time! CD sports seven bonus tracks, mainman David Bean's "Modomusic" EP. Released almost four years to the day after Washarama and following an eighteen month hiatus, The Judy's Moo album has a slightly more progressive sound: richer production values, fuller arrangements and thicker harmonies. As the band returned to the stage in 1985, this was the album that showed the band's maturity and development as songwriters and musicians. The twelve songs on Moo, laced with solid-state irony, well-placed cynicism and standard issue Judys' wit, show the band at the peak of their creativity and acted as a springboard for their live extravaganzas. The album was released with The Moo Tour - a month of live performances across the state which included giant cereal boxes, moving conveyer belts of milk cartons, and a dancing cow while the band donned milkman uniforms. Critically acclaimed and fan-revered, The Moo Album continues to be a milestone in Texas pop music.

Jurado, Damien
Caught In The Trees (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 9TH)
PS, US "Caught In the Trees" marks the dawn of a new era for DAMIEN JURADO. It may not be a huge departure from some of his past albums musically, but lyrically Jurado has taken a giant leap forward and there is no turning back. Best known for his dark yet fragile first person fictional tales, Jurado now unlocks the door and invites us into his own enigmatic world with an energy and intensity that is all consuming. Jurado took a full year to make this record, longer than ever before, as he ran away from and eventually found himself in his own songs. He subsequently found refuge in sharing the songs with his closest friends and bandmates, Eric Fisher and Jenna Conrad. Having walked alongside him through this most challenging journey, the songs that came out of it are as much theirs as his. Jurado, Fisher, and Conrad collaborated on the compositions - some much more rocking than Jurado fans are used to, but ever as intense - and pulled in producers Kory Kruckenberg and Casey Foubert to contribute their own unique stylings. Recording started in the summer months and the sweltering heat, and wrapped in the freezing temps of winter. (It is clear on first listen that two distinct seasons are represented through "Caught In the Trees" - an accidental metaphor perhaps?) There was laughter and there was introspection, and the result is a record that Jurado loyalists will find was worth the wait. And perhaps a reason to listen for those who have yet to give this bedraggled storyteller a chance.

Machine Fabriek & Stephen Vitiello
Box Music (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 10TH)
PS, US Rutger and Stephen sort of accidentally met through e-mail. A simple note regarding an ordering question for a CD led to an enthusiastic e-mail conversation and climaxed in a musical collaboration. This all happened in a very short period, both musicians being very inspired by the concept of "exchange," as a means to cross space and time -- Rutger living in the Netherlands and Stephen in Virginia. Most of the time, when (electronic) musicians work together it's a matter of swapping digital files. In this case they decided to do something different and sent each other a box full of (mostly non-musical, or musically non-functional) objects and recordings, with the "assignment" to make music with those objects and all as source materials. As the titles tell, we're talking about an egg cutter, thumb piano, a broken kraakle box, rice, chocolate sprinkles, old cassette tapes, a broken 7" record, etcetera, etcetera. Both musicians made two of their own solo tracks with the box they received, and the last track was done together by Rutger adding sounds and processing to a piece started by Stephen. For Rutger/ Machinefabriek this is part of his most delicate work. For Stephen, it was a new and extremely enjoyable form of long-distance collaboration. Machinefabriek: Rutger Zuydervelt, better known as Machinefabriek, lives in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Started as Machinefabriek in 2004, he released 40+ small run home-made cdr's as well as work for Type Records, Lampse, Digitalis, Staalplaat (Mort Aux Vaches) and now 12K. A double remix cd was released in 2007, with interpetations by Alva Noto, Pita, Mitchell Akiyama, Xela, Gert-Jan Prins and many more. Collaborations (live or recording) include Steinbrüchel, Jasper TX, Wouter van Veldhoven, Simon Nabatov, Frans de Waard, Aaron Martin and Peter Broderick. Stephen Vitiello: Stephen Vitiello is a sound and media artist based in Richmond, VA. CD releases include Bright and Dusty Things (New Albion), Listening to Donald Judd (Sub Rosa) and Untitled/Exchange, a collaborative CD with Michael J. Schumacher (A Question of Re-Entry). Solo exhibitions of Vitiello's sound installations, photographs and drawings have been presented at The Project, NY, Museum 52, London, the Texas Gallery, Houston, TX and Diapason, NYC. Group exhibitions include the 2002 Whitney Biennial and the 2006 Biennial of Sydney. Over the last 18 years, Stephen has collaborated with numerous musicians and artists including Scanner, Pauline Oliveros, Andrew Deutsch, Julie Mehretu and Tony Oursler.

Maserati
Inventions Remixes (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 9TH)
PS, US Last year Georgia's MASERATI ended a four-year absence with "Inventions For The New Season", a delirious soundtrack for late-night cityscapes and never-ending car chases. The first album featuring new drummer Jerry Fuchs (LCD Soundsystem, !!!, The Juan Maclean), Inventions quite literally reinvented Maserati as a motorik psych-rock band with a disco ball for a kick drum. It makes sense, then, that Maserati have commissioned a pair of remixes by two producers most likely to shove their songs onto the dancefloor feet-first. Side A finds THEE LOVING HAND (Tim Goldsworthy of The DFA, Hercules and Love Affair) stripping "The World Outside" to almost nothing, reimagining it as a vintage European disco track from the ground up. Starting with a steady, far-off kick drum and a rogue, in-your-face hi hat, the song's seemingly disparate parts eventually lock into the kind of dirty disco that has made Goldsworthy a club legend. Equally club-friendly, !!!'s JUSTIN VAN DER VOLGEN brushes away the grit of the original "Inventions" and painstakingly buffs it to a shine as slick as black ice. The side-long trance mix maintains the sweaty atmosphere of the original, but removes the top-down drive in favor of a midnight jog. Strictly limited to a one-time pressing of 1,000 copies, "Inventions Remixes" is both an addendum to the successful reboot of Inventions For The New Season, as well as a testament to the broad spectrum of influences that flow in and out of Maserati's music.

Mercury Rev
Snowflake Midnight (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 30TH)
PS, US Swirling atmospherics and mantra-like lyrics abound on Mercury Rev's newest work Snowflake Midnight. Recorded almost exclusively in the band's Catskills, N.Y. laboratory, Snowflake Midnight sees MR continue experiments with laser harps, ad-hoc computer programs and random note generators resulting in a record that moves with grace between avant garde and traditional pop sensibilities. Standout tracks "Butterfly's Wing" and "Senses on Fire" exhibit the emphasis on letting the music define itself, as free as possible from human interference. Zooming in at nearly any magnification, Snowflake Midnight appears to be a resplendent fractal folding in upon itself, into something continually new, unpredictable and spontaneous, and yet so subtly self-aware, that it never fails to resemble itself as a whole.

Michna
Magic Monday (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 23RD)
PS, US Adrian Michna found his way as a DJ under his EGG FOO YOUNG alias, earning him an URB "Next 100" nod in the process. Production gigs for Bonde do Role & Diplo followed, allowing Michna to put his deftness at both the drum machine & the trombone to good use, creating tracks out of dense blankets of sound & texture. Apart from the tightly woven musical amalgam of hip-hop, booty & electro, it's the detailed process that makes Michna's debut album
move. Perhaps the most exciting aspect of the album is its rich element of musicality; in an era when hip-hop tracks have devolved into two-note keyboard loops, songs like "Skunk Walk" live up to their name with full-bodied funk & live horns. When Ghostly owner, Sam Valenti IV, asked Adrian which samples to clear, Adrian replied, "What samples?"

Nebulo
Avutma (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 16TH)
PS, GERMANY Avutma is the latest release by Nebulo after the album Kolia, two remixes for architect and Hecq, and even freely available Nebulo ringtones. The outstanding French artist Thomas P. with this CD has created a closed opus that might be seen as a concept album in which the listener has to decide what the concept is. Nebulo's subtle approach forms a complex fictitious scenery by using seemingly minimal resources that are more visible than ever. Electronically treated instruments like organ and piano, combined with synth layers and modified beats generate tempers that range from surreal to melancholic or even nearly frightening. Listening to 'Avutma' is like walking in a dimly lit basement never knowing what's behind the next curve, and who or what is actually casting these shadows on the walls... Nebulo's trademark, a connection between ambience, idm, clicks'n'cuts and postmusique- concrète collages is presented here once again. As a reviewer wrote: 'surreal dreamscapes painted with tears and sometimes even blood' - Avutma might be the soundtrack of today's grand guignol.

New Radiant Storm Kings
Drinking In The Moonlight (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 7TH)
PS, US Northampton, MA/New York city indie rockers New Radiant Storm King deliver the tightest, hookiest and most diverse record in their distinguished career. Recorded over six months in deep, rural Massachusetts, Drinking in the Moonlight proves once again that guitarists/vocalists Peyton Pinkerton and Matt Hunter along with bassist Caleb Wetmore and drummer J.J. O'Connell write some of the most imaginative and memorable American rock. Approaching their twentieth year as a band, NRSK have gracefully matured as song smiths while retaining their prowess at crafting unconventional yet infectious melodies. Drinking in the Moonlight is a sonic mix of urban and rural, sporting distorted yet wiry pop with a marked focus on narrative within their song writing -- trademarks gratifying to longtime fans. Time spent in other bands (Pinkerton in The Silver Jews and The Pernice Brothers; Hunter in J. Mascis & The Fog and The Wharton Tiers Ensemble) has honed the Pinkerton/Hunter attack musically and lyrically. Over the course of thirteen songs, Drinking in the Moonlight addresses topics as varied as random street violence, infidelity and subsequent pregnancy, exorbitant winter heat bills and even an open condemnation of organized religion (Thank God -Ed). Drinking in the Moonlight was recorded with longtime NRSK engineer Mark Alan Miller (Cordelia's Dad, J. Mascis & The Fog) at his Slaughterhouse Studios in Westhampton, MA. NRSK will tour Fall 2008. TRACKS: 1) Soporific Slump - A few more pints and then back to your place on 1st Avenue. 2) Undignified - Hopefully you can convince everyone that you actually are being your natural self - and have been lying up until just now. 3) Senseless - If a random act of brutal violence changed your life for the better, how would you explain it to anyone? To yourself, even? 4) Islander - She could never handle the mainland for more than a few days at any given time. 5) Little Ice Age - Sometimes the idea of summer seems both impossible and absurd. 6) Anything Can Happen - And usually does, if you're lucky (or not). 7) New Paltz Waltz - Instrumental levity. 8) Eight Steps Closer - Slouching towards Echo Park, with a cosmo in her hand. 9) After the After Hours - Guns, drugs and hipsters - in way over their heads. 10) Midnight Comes - Time horizons always seem to stretch into forever on a first date. 11) Eraser - Lick your wounds and don't look back for a second. 12) Clouds Cover Everything - Are you really sure that your memories are totally your own? 13) Fall Prey - The world is flat. The sun revolves around it. We've progressed on so many fronts save one.

Northern Portrait
Napoleon Sweetheart EP (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 2ND)
PS, US Stunning second single from new Matinée favorites Northern Portrait! Upon release of their debut 'The Fallen Aristocracy' EP earlier this year, the accolades started pouring in for this new Danish band: "as perfect as jangling guitar pop can get"... "an instant classic"... "the bar has been set very high indeed"..."these songs are second to none"... "outstanding is an understatement"..."a modern pop classic"..."single of the year!" The EP has topped the Matinée best sellers chart every month since its release with good reason. On the highly anticipated 'Napoleon Sweetheart' EP, the band worked to expand its sound slightly while retaining the classic appeal of its debut. The brilliant lead track 'I Give You Two Seconds To Entertain Me' was the second song ever recorded by the band but has been completely remixed and remastered for this EP. Featuring jangling guitars, keyboards, superb vocals and bright melodies, the song is a three-minute classic inspired by the feeling of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. 'Sporting A Scar' is the first of three additional tracks on the EP-thematically close but more self-reflective than the lead track, with especially superb lyrics and more breezy keyboards. It's another gem! 'In An Empty Hotel' is a short and catchy tune about the clash between hopeful dreams and the practical problems that can occur, while the nearly epic 'Our Lambrusco Days' is a slightly sentimental and warm ballad with relatively simple instrumentation and open guitar tuning giving the song a special sound. Reviewers of the first EP rightly questioned how Northern Portrait could possibly follow such a strong debut single. The band has responded in brilliant fashion, as 'Napoleon Sweetheart' is another solid contender for single of the year. The bar has been set very high indeed. Limited to 1000 copies in custom minijacket sleeve.

"The Stand Ins" was recorded in Austin and produced by longtime collaborator Brian Beattie and Okkervil River. The album features 11 songs and includes the track "Lost Coastlines," on which SHEFF and recently departed JONATHAN MEIBURG of Shearwater share a duet on the joys and hardships of trying to keep the band together. Of the process Will Sheff explains, "We had so many songs we were excited about that we briefly threw around the idea of just putting out a double record. Instead, we decided to take a group of songs that fit with each other and turn that into "The Stage Names", setting the rest aside for a future release, a "The Stage Names" sequel." "The Stand Ins" is that sequel, part two of a staggered double album. Like artist William Schaff's embroidered artwork, which depicts what's happening underneath The Stage Names' front-cover quicksand hand,The Stand Ins picks up exactly where Part One left off but also delves deeper into the story and theme of "The Stage Names". Owl Service, The And Alison O'Donnell
The Fabric of Folk EP (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 2ND)
PS, UK If you thought social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook were just devices which sucked you into an unstoppable vortex of wasted time, then think again. A chance discussion between Steven Collins and Alison O'Donnell, formerly of legendary Irish prog-folk troupe Mellow Candle, took place on such a website and out of that conversation came the first fruits of this collaboration. The Fabric of Folk is a 5-track EP featuring Collins' in his guise as main man of the Owl Service, one generation of folk-rock crashing head-long into an earlier, glorious era represented here by the considerable vocal talents of Alison O'Donnell. Capturing the many different faces of folk-rock, the five songs here - two are original compositions by the pair, one of which was written with the Straw Bear Band's Dominic Cooper - are perfectly formed, heartfelt and touching but with more than a hint of darkness. This follows on from the Owl Service's previous release for Static Caravan, the Cine 3" CD (VAN 140), and arrives alongside their debut album A Garland of Song, which is being released on Southern Records. Meanwhile, Alison's former band Mellow Candle have returned to prominence on the back of the newly repackaged Swaddling Songs - their solitary album release - which has been remastered and reissued by Esoteric/Cherry Red. Inspired by a mutual recognition and respect, the pairing of Collins' band with O'Donnell is a dreamy combination. Imbued with a sense of revivalism, The Fabric of Folk is far from backward-looking and instead concocts something incredibly new which, while referencing the production techniques and masterful storytelling of Brit-folk's heyday, is bubbling with new ideas and an inherent knack for crafting sublime arrangements.

Parenthetical Girls
Entanglements (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 9TH)
PS, US ((LP has been postponed)) Portand, Oregon's PARENTHETICAL GIRLS have traded in their small-screen sincerity for a bold and blustering Technicolour - a lush, longing and lusty celluloid schmaltz they call "Entanglements". An orchestral song-cycle of grand sonic ambition, "Entanglements" is an eleven-song, linear narrative of ascendancy, adolescent sexuality, quantum mechanics, consent and other moral ambiguities! Borrowing string-swept sentimentality from the likes of Van Dyke Parks, Scott Walker, Jack Nitzsche, and Burt Bacharach, "Entanglements" draws colourful lines across the expanse between these orchestral pop antiquities and the more formidable strains of modern classical composers - its hues distantly reminiscent of names like Krzystof Penderecki, Philip Glass, and Gavin Bryars.

Demon producer Jari Haapalainen (Bear Quartet guitarist and producer for Ed Harcourt, Concretes and Camera Obscura) produced and played the drums, and the twin sisters Johanna and Miriam E. Berhan from Taxi Taxi! sang the backing-vocals. Pop Levi
Never Never Love (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 26TH)
PS, US 2008 sophomore album from this Pop (no pun intended) singer/songwriter and former Ladytron member, probably the only contemporary musician in the world beloved of both Jarvis Cocker and Noel Gallagher. Recorded entirely in Hollywood at Quincy Jones' old studio, Westlake, where both Thriller & Off The Wall were laid down, Mr. Levi has returned with an album about the madness of love - 100% autobiographical, 100% clever, 100% dumb, 100% unique. And that's giving 400% already. From transitional rockers like 'Wannamama' and 'Oh God,' Pop spreads his wings, relying on a production flare, which makes the record feel fresh and slick as well as charmingly hi-lo-fi. 'Never Never Love' shows that while he hasn't abandoned the dynamics of the Rock group he has also been steeping himself in contemporary R&B. Flamboyant, utterly self-confident, completely his own man and so uninterested in the back and forth of fashion that everything he makes is an instant classic, Pop Levi is in the building. Bow down and give thanks.

Quinn, Donovan & The 13th Month
S/T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 23RD)
PS, US Donovan's steadily growing reputation as a first rate darkly romantic penman (thanks to contributions to The Skygreen Leopards & solo as Verdure) has culminated with his latest endeavor. Rather than aping or ducking genres, Quinn has crafted a bright spectrum of songs best described as 'American.' Xian folk, languid indie pop, VU cool, loner country & west coast psych are touchstones, with Quinn's singular lyrical abilities & taste for sun-baked song steadily at the fore. Ever the flower bed romantic, Quinn has - at the risk of over-simplification - written a classic "break-up record;" albeit filtered through surrealistic tenderness & riddled with red herrings & feelings of betrothal. Though not exactly lost in a sea of scarves, Quinn is indebted to the vulnerability, humor & bitterness present in the works of Ronnie Lane, Skip Spence, Nikki Sudden & Basement Tapes-era Dylan.

Sailboats Are White
Turbo (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 9TH)
PS, AUSTRALIA As completely incidental as it may seem, the acronym for Sailboats Are White is in fact SAW. Coincidence? Perhaps, but it's also a pretty accurate musical description. You see, saws are used to cut through things like bone, metal and possibly wood, likewise though, Sailboats' music is just as fierce, cutting and destructive to the senses as say, a lumberjack's saw would be to a maple tree.

Schaeffer, Janek
Extended Play [Triptych for the child survivors of war and conflict] (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 10TH)
PS, US LIMITED EDITION 600. LINE is proud to release the latest audio work from British composer and installation artist Janek Schaefer based on his installation of the same title. Installation Reviews: "a piece to return to again and again... haunting and lulling" [The Wire, UK] "so inspirational, and in many ways very spiritual" [Gerry Turvey] "I was so deeply touched by your piece" [Mandeep Kaur Samra] Red is the colour of Life, of Death, and of Love. Scarlett, my first child, was born in 2005, and since then I have been very aware of how lucky we all are. have been constantly comparing this to the fact that my mother was born in Warsaw in 1942 - the epicenter of World War II. How opposite can two beginnings be? This inspired me to produce the Extended Play installation, which continuously and positively celebrates hope and new beginnings, for child survivors in all situations around the world. The original idea for the composition came from learning about the 'Jodoform' system of secret musical messages that were broadcast by the BBC Service, during music they played was given a particular meaning, which was interpreted by Polish Underground. Discovered from the original Jodoform logbook, that the lovely Polish folk song 'Tango Lyczakowskie', was broadcast on the day my mother was born. Song describes how children in 1918, had been forced to take up arms, in defense of their town. From this tune, chose a short rising musical phrase, and with my arranger Michael Jennings, developed a ten-minute score. Each of the three solo parts was then recorded separately, edited, and cut onto vinyl. In the gallery, 3 x Cello EP's, 3 x Piano EP's, and 3 x Violin EP's are played at either 33, 45, or 78rpm using nine retro record players. These play continuously, and each was modified to stop playing briefly in response to the audience moving around the exhibition. This has the effect of changing and extending the composition, so that it is never the same again.

Lunglight (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 9TH)

PS, US From behind closed doors since 1992, the Silver Jews released a series of popular music records that earned the group dedicated fans all over the world. But being a Silver Jews fan always meant accepting you'd never live to see the day your favorite band would take the stage. Then in 2006, after five albums & fifteen years, David Berman decided to change all that. The band toured across America & Europe, all the way to Israel, playing these, their first forty shows, to a widespread outpouring of joy. SILVER JEW is a simple document of one of those stops, whereupon the band played two shows in Tel Aviv, and spent a profound afternoon in Jerusalem. All Region.

Smithson, Dawn
Earth Machine (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 23RD)
PS, UK Former bassist & vocalist with space-rockers JESSAMINE, Dawn returns with her second solo album. Guests Ray Raposa (Castanets), Bill Herzog (SUNN O))), Jesse Sykes & the Sweet Hereafter), David Farrell (Southerning, Locate, Module), & Jussi Brightmore (Chrome Hoof, 1000 Pets,) add extra grit, grain & space, creating a heady cocktail of sounds. Where Smithson's first album was wounded & tentative in it's approach, Earth Machine is strong & sure of it's footing. Where there was deep melancholy with a glimmer of hope in the former, the latter reaches it's winding paths out to further hills & valleys, encompassing a wide range of emotion. Songs seem to tell one long story as they segue into one another. From the rounded nylon string guitar picking & gurgling synths to the pure feedback drones & sometimes Floydian electric guitar, Earth Machine has real continuity & a strong sense of being a true "album".

Subaudible Hum
All for the Caspian (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 9TH)
PS, AUSTRALIA Deluxe single feating radio faves "Sugarcoat" & "All For The Caspian". Features a live track & remixes from New Yorks Secret Frequency Crew & Gordon McQ from The Avalanches. In late 2005 SubAudible Hum released their debut full-length album entitled "Everything You Heard Is True". It was a dark, venomous abrasion on the guitar format that also managed to make time for sprawling sonic scenery and downbeat, melancholic intricacy. The record gained SubAudible Hum immediate national radio rotation including a spot on Triple J's Next Crop campaign. SubAudible Hum write from that mysterious void between emotive art and didactic thesis. The subject matter is always of paramount importance but never at the expense of listening pleasure, in fact SubAudible Hum may just have found the harmonious middle ground between the two. Any modern day themes of global politics, dirty economics, fundamental agendas, and social degradation are always communicated with music, never using it as a soapbox. Stepping into 2006 SubAudible Hum have a whole new take. Having purged much of their structural and self-imposed stylistic constraints the SubAudible Hum sound is now less definable than ever.

Tallest Man On Earth, The
Shallow Grave (PRE-ORDER: DELAYED, SALEABLE TBA)
PS, SWEDEN Incredible new album, Pitchfork approved. If you thought the EP was great, just wait until this arrives. Folk album of the year? Price to be confirmed, it might be better, it won't be worse. PITCHFORK: "While it's understandable to be skeptical of another skinny dude with a mustache, a guitar, and a worn-out copy of The Anthology of American Folk Music, the more time you invest in Shallow Graves, the more you'll realize how unusually memorable it is. Ultimately, Shallow Graves transcends comparison-- which is saying an awful lot, given the popularity of its prototype-- and Matsson is a natural-born folksinger, earnest, clever, and comforting."

PS, UK 27 tracks. LTM present a new volume in the ongoing compilation series Auteur Labels, here profiling cult Manchester imprint Object Music. Active between 1978 and 1981, pioneering Manchester post-punk label Object Music was founded by songwriter and deejay Steve Solamar to release records by his own group, Spherical Objects. Their first album, Past & Parcel, arrived in August 1978. Object soon began releasing records by other artists, many of them active in the Manchester Musicians' Collective. After singles by Spherical Objects, the Passage, Steve Miro, Grow Up, Contact and others, in 1979 the label took the unusual step of concentrating on albums, releasing 7 in 12 months. However Object Music ceased operations in 1981 after Steve Solamar corrected a lifelong contradiction and became a woman. Auteur Labels: Object Music compiles tracks from singles released between September 1978 and July 1980, as well as select album tracks. Week That Was, The
S-T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 26TH)
PS, US 2008 debut album from the British Electro Pop outfit, chiefly Field Music dude David Brewis' big brother, and featuring contributions from Field Music colleagues. Musically the record is an expansive tribute, paying direct (and indirect) homage to the wildly ambitious Linn Drum and Fairlight experiments of Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, and Tin Drum-era Japan. Fused with typically detailed arrangements and a sense of drama, this makes The Week That Was a brain-shattering, 32-minute epic, straying far outside the conventions of most indie-guitar music.

Wovenhand
Ten Stones (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 9TH)

From the jarring folk of "White Knuckle Grip", to the eerie bossa nova of Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars", to the fiery foot-stomper "Not One Stone", the album forms a song-cycle that is singular in its breadth and eclecticism. Flanked by the haunting strains of the bandoneón and the drones of the double bass, Edwards' lyrical inversions stitch symbols into a tapestry of peaceable and hellish imagery-horsetails, honeybees, and bird wings meet flaming battles and barbed wire to proclaim sin's devastation and the sweetness of redemption. The music of Wovenhand is utterly unique, dizzying those who encounter it, with turnings and lashings of shadow and light.

Young Widows
Old Wounds (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 9TH)
PS, US Arriving two years after their debut, Settle Down City, "Old Wounds" completes YOUNG WIDOWS' transformation into a top-shelf rock band firing on all cylinders. Forging the best parts of Nirvana, The Jesus Lizard, Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, Fugazi and The Melvins, "Old Wounds" is a series of dynamic, thoughtful tunes anchored by cavernous that will certainly push most speakers to their breaking point. For the unique production, the band reunited with uber-producer friend (and Converge guitarist) Kurt Ballou, who had been eager to experiment with recording the band in multiple environments, with the intent of capturing the definitive take of each song for the final cut of the album. Feeling most at home when they're not at home, they brought Ballou along on tour to record all of their live shows. In addition, they recorded multiple sets in their rehearsal space, and another set at Ballou's Godcity Studios in Boston, MA. After tediously combing through a dozen hours of recordings, they compiled and mixed the album. The result is a bonafide classic, overflowing with the sweaty euphoria of a great live show, and the high replay value of a perfectly sequenced, well-produced rock record.
