Parasol New Arrivals • June 26, 2007

Hey hey,

Welcome back. You know what, I am thoroughly enjoying the new Bad Brains record and believe you me, I had my reservations going into it but it’s damn solid and those fellows deserve a friendly pat on the back for a job well done.

In other news, we’re trudging along through the summer heat and lucky for us we have the new Black Bonzo, Watson Twins, Ben And Bruno, Black Strobe and an advance of the ever so sweet St. Vincent record to keep us company at the pool or while injuring ourselves in the backyard on the Slip n Slide that we purchased last Saturday while junkin' throughout C-U.

Good and better news from NYC: Having been hospitalized since late-May with a serious case of pneumonia, Richard Lloyd's well-being has been front and center in our thoughts recently. Word is he is out of intensive care and on the mend! Our best wishes go out to he and his family.

As always, we’re here for you, friends. If anything from the list catches your eye, we’re just an email or phone call away.

Soon,

Royal & Paul

Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week

Black Bonzo "Sound of the Apocalypse" CD $13.75 (Laser's Edge)
Domestic release for Swedish retro-psych-prog act Black Bonzo's second album! With their debut album, Self-Titled AKA Lady of the Light (which we're trying to restock at a decent price), Black Bonzo made fans of many Parasol staffers, pals, and customers, so it’s extra cool to have their new album readily available Stateside. This new album finds the band exploring even more glorious 60s and 70s progressive rock trajectories, stupendous stadium rock, the soundtrack to a hazy, hairy, heavenly bygone era. Led by Magnus Lindgren prog-perfect vocals and Nicklas Åhlund’s magnificent organ Black Bonzo resurrects Queen, Uriah Heap, Yes, Pink Floyd, Gentle Giant, even Kansas. The band says "It's more adventurous, original and mysterious then you ever can imagine!" and knowing what we know about their flamboyant debut we've got two words for you: "WHOA!" Yes these classic rock chameleons are back, and in fine "prog-was-punk-before-punk-was-punk” form. Check out front page and Jim's Pick page for more sound samples.

Jim's Scandinavian Pick of the Week

Tupelo Honeys "Tupelo Honeys Salute You" CD $13.50 (A West Side Fabrication)
First off, I LOVE grandiose boy/girl duets by Swedish twins. You put that combo together and I’ll love it and goshblesh'm upstart Swedish guitar-pop duo Tupelo Honeys have done just that! Even if you take the twins out of the equation I’ll love it like I love David Fridlund and Sara Culler, Vega (especially), and our own Moonbabies; and I’ll harken back to The Delgados, The Go-Betweens, and OK, I'll admit it, The Dream Academy. Joel’s songs trend towards epicry and grandeur (think Arcade Fire and even Johnossi's poppier moments), while Linn’s sweeter sunnier fare has twee and classic Swedish pop (think Club 8, The Tiny, Concretes) dominating the graph. It’s when their voices come together that the goosebumps go off, bigtime, and when the twins do that amazingly effective shouty gang vocal call and response thing I hear a very romantic and winsome Love Is All. Check out front page and Jim's Pick page for more sound samples.

In Pink
PS, US Fabrizio Modonese Palumbo took almost 2 years to churn out "In Pink" due to the triple duty he pulls with bands Larsen and XXL. In Pink is a pretty extreme one, swinging between joy and fear, introspective moody songs and explosions of - desperately optimistic - energy. Still it is more a diary than an exorcism, filled with songs about death and transfiguration, including a version of an Irish traditional theme (which also Johnny Cash interpreted on one of his American albums) and Joy Division's classic Atmosphere (which Fabrizio lists among the best songs ever written).

Agnes Strange
Strange Flavour
PS, UK Picture this: Britain in the pre-punk 1970s...most of the Supergroups of Rock have become too vast and trunk less to mean much to the average music fans in their hearts. An odd time, when the secret master beloved by all was Alex Harvey, and up and down the country, every night, small-time bands kept the spirit alive; playing R&B, Prog, Folk Rock, you name it, they didn't give up the music they loved...but record labels didn't really get it - giving rise to the phenomenon nowadays loved by collectors - the Private Press record. Agnes Strange was one of the best and most unusual (and at the same time archetypal) of these bands. Their private press label was a bizarre joint venture between a major label and a chain of Real Ale pubs. With producer and well-known scholar of 1950s rock' n' roll - Dave Travis at the recording controls, it was never going to be ordinary! Much bootlegged, pirated and faked by collectors' labels, here for the first time, with the full involvement of Dave Travis and the band, is the REAL story of Agnes Strange.

Area C
Haunt
PS, US A swirl of Farfisas organs, loops, stretched-out guitar, & the fragmented, fractured beats of an analog drum machine & tube amplifier static. What began as a plan record a dual-Farfisa album (both Erik & Jeff are Farfisa aficionados) quickly & organically turned into much more. They convened & over the course of 2 brief sessions spun out a sequence of songs whose repetitions & details hold much more than the surfaces first reveal.

Astral Social Club
Neon Pibroch
PS, US Neon Pibroch is a brand new full length cd from the Astral Social Club. Also available at the same time is a limited edition Astral Social Club LP on Important titled Super Grease. Neon Pibroch is dedicated to the memory of Textile Records founder Benoit Sonnette. Astral Social Club is the current project of Neil Campbell, formerly of Vibracathedral Orchestra, Sunroof!, A Band and many more. Campbell has been active since the early 80s, and The Wire magazine has said that, along with his friends Richard Youngs and Matthew Bower, he "provided the map co-ordinates for much of what passed for a post-punk UK underground during most of the 80s and 90s". Campbell's approach as Astral Social Club could be seen as both a continuation and a refutal of his work with Vibracathedral Orchestra - a continuation in that it continues the quest into the unknown stellar regions of improvised drone-based music, and a refutal in its espousal of most of the elemental organic rock modes that made that band so special. The focus here is more on alien electronics and overloaded loop disorientation, sometimes even working with sounds more readily associated with the far end of dance music to produce a truly vast 21st century psychedelic sound. Late last year, VHF Records released a compilation/mix CD drawn from the earlier string of self-released CDRs which showcased the diverse methods employed in Astral Social Club recordings.

S-T
PS, US The work of Luke Wyland, a multi-instrumental nomad who creates wandering, sprawling psych-folk. Now joined by friends to create a multi-limbed trio with the knack for lovely instruments too numerous to name (euphonium, accordion, bells, guitar, saw, etc) Situated amongst the spheres of Avant-Folk, Art-Pop & New Music's nuance - it is at the vanguard of modern songwriting. Songs sidestep diaristic accounts in search of a more ubiquitous emotional experience.

Black Bonzo
Sound of the Apocalypse (ON SALE)
PS, US Black Bonzo's new album, released in the U.S. The music of Black Bonzo is fixed on a bedrock of 70s hard rock bands such as Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, and Queen. Upon this foundation are obvious progressive influences from Camel, Gentle Giant, Genesis, and Yes. Keyboardist Nicklas Ahlund's fixation for analog sounds reminds of Heep keysman Ken Hensley's massive wall of Hammond organ, Mellotron and Mini-Moog. With guitarist Joakim Karlsson offering Blackmore-esque solos as the perfect counterpoint to Ahlund's intricate playing you will think you stepped into the Way-Back Machine! Vocalist Magnus Lindgren provides as much drama as Peter Gabriel or Jon Anderson could ever muster. The rhythm section of Anthon Johansson and Mike Israel bridge the gap between Led Zepellin and King Crimson. Sound Of The Apocalypse is one of those great crossover albums that will appeal to fans of progressive rock, stoner metal and hard rock. The album features state of the art production with a 70s feel - it was actually mixed on the same console used by Pink Floyd for their Animals album. The album comes packaged in a gorgeous digipak.

Black Magic Disco
Self-Titled
PS, US BLACK MAGIC DISCO is the new all-star band featuring Tom Greenwood (Jackie-O Motherfucker), Maurizio & Roberto Opalio (My Cat Is An Alien) and Ramona Ponzini (Painting Petals On Planet Ghost, Praxinoscope). The project was born out of an idea from Tom Greenwood, former leader of the avant-folk-blues ensemble Jackie-O Motherfucker (JOMF), who invited Maurizio and Roberto Opalio, aka the Italian improv duo My Cat Is An Alien (MCIAA), and their close collaborator Ramona Ponzini (also involved with the two brothers in the projects named Painting Petals On Planet Ghost and Praxinoscope, as well as in the new collaboration with Z'ev) to perform with him for two months of touring throughout all Europe in May/ June 2005. As one can imagine, the result was killer. The music which came out of he live performances was totally explosive, combining Ramona's Japanese vocals & hypnotic chimes with Greenwood's psych-blues guitar attitude & wild turntablism, over MCIAA's alien cosmic flux of electric guitars, space toys & percussions, creating a still unheard mixture of sounds unifying archaic & post-modern, western & eastern, sky & earth.

Black Strobe
Burn Your Own Church
PS, US French dance rock four-piece Black Strobe connects Norwegian death metal, French club anthems, and London super-producer Paul Epworth. Few bands manage to combine guitars and electronics as successfully. The first single, "Shining Bright Star", is a stunning marriage of gut-butting bass guitar, droning synth, and menacing but melodic vocals. The opening track, "Brenn di Ega Kjerke" ("Burn Your Own Church"), is a nod to black metal. The flip side to the band's personality is "Girl Next Door", as downbeat and spooky as a 4 a.m. walk home, and the most surprising moment is a high-octane electronic cover of Bo Diddley's "I'm A Man", which will be the second single. The sum of these parts is a jaw-dropping debut.

Breithaupt, Don
Steely Dan: Aja
PS, US Don Breithaupt's book on Aja includes a detailed song-by-song analysis, an extended interview with co-writer, co-founder, singer, and pianist Donald Fagen, and discusses a wide range of Aja-related issues. Aja was the album that made Steely Dan a commercial force on the order of contemporaries like Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles and Chicago. A double-platinum, Grammy-winning bestseller, it lingered on the Billboard charts for more than a year and spawned three hit singles. Odd, then, that its creators saw it as an "ambitious, extended" work, the apotheosis of their anti-rock, anti-band, anti-glamour aesthetic. Populated by thirty-fi ve mostly jazz session players, Aja served up prewar song forms, mixed meters and extended solos to a generation whose idea of pop daring was Paul letting Linda sing lead once in a while. And, impossibly, it sold. Including an in-depth interview with Donald Fagen, this book paints a detailed picture of the making of a masterpiece.<p/>
<p>Don Breithaupt is a studio musician and songwriter based in Toronto. He is the co-author of Precious and Few: Pop Music in the Early '70s and Night Moves: Pop Music in the Late '70s. A Berklee College of Music alumnus and three-time Juno Award nominee, he has written extensively on music and film for the National Post.

Coniglio, Enrico
Areavirus Topofonie Vol 1
PS, IRELAND The album is inspired by the ambience in Venice lagoon. You could say it sounds like a night trip on a mysterious boat, or a flight over a land in the balance between waters and grounds, as a unique landscape running the risk to be jeopardized by the contemporary urban and industry development. The kind of sounds in the work are rich, pieces never static but almost narrative, varied in drone and textures; arpeggio loops rarely sustained by some glitchy rhythmic patterns, sweet naive and distant melody made by saxes or a brilliant piano; dense and not ever conciliating atmospheres, but sensitive in the forms and absolutely inclined to melancholy.

Dale, Jim
Meet Jim Dale and This Is Me
PS, UK Author of 'Georgy Girl', "Carry On" regular, "Barnum" star and now the voice of the million selling Harry Potter audio books: Jim Dale is a much loved British entertainer in the grand style with an international audience of all ages. Dale is a gifted songwriter and fine vocalist so this album is far above normal personality standards. "Meet Jim Dale" indeed proves to be something of a lost classic of Psychedelia, attested to by his beautiful performance of 'Georgy Girl' and such original masterpieces as 'Miss Linda Grey' and 'Dick-A-Dum-Dum' that would give a hit to (ahem!) Des O'Connor. It is the first time on CD also for the theme to the classic Charles Bronson/Susan George film from 1970 - Twinky. This album is a gorgeous surprise!

PS, US I couldn't help but to be taken aback when I finally heard this. Atmospheric yet propulsory, serrated by slippery synth-hooks & a newfound tightness & about as discomforting as the surreal experience of stumbling into a beerless after-after-party for the first time. His two number 1 hits 'Copacabana' and 'Tereza De Praia' are included here in a program that culled from impossibly rare long out of print south American 10" albums and 78's combines the ballads of Dick Farney the crooner with the instrumentals of Farney the very gifted jazz pianist. Five Day Week Straw People
Self-Titled
PS, UK Packed with imagination, first rate songs and confident performances that range from the swaggering hard rock of 'Gold Digger' to the dreamy psychedelic pop of 'Sunday Morning', 'The Five Day Week Straw People' is one of those rare LP's where the music it contains more than justifies it's decent price in the record price guides. It is now also to be found listed in Record Collector's 100 Greatest Psychedelic Records. A 1968 concept album, about "people who work monotonously during the week and then try to enjoy themselves at weekends", created by David Montague and Guy Mascolo, 'The Five Day Week Straw People' receives a long overdue re-mastering from the original tapes, and is augmented by two further character songs from writing sessions in the same year.

Flanders, Tommy
The Moonstone
PS, UK After the breathtaking debut album of The Blues Project, sometime lead vocalist Tommy Flanders seemed to disappear off the face of the earth! A couple of singles appeared, actually recorded by his former band...and then this strange, muted example of what nowadays is referred to as wyrd folk, but not so long ago was just seen as Skip Spence or Syd Barrett without the laughs! The faded, melancholy vibe herein is somewhat unsettling, as the ghost of a fairly straight acoustic pop album is dimly apparent, and Tommy's voice still sounds occasionally as positive as it did on his earlier "Violets Of Dawn". There is a mystery to solve here...what will we find? This is the first time ever on CD for this enigmatic artist with wonderful state of the art remastering. Featuring breathtaking art work and a chance to finally read the story of the mysterious Tommy. A must for all fans of the twistier byways of folk-related musics; from a time when major labels let one get away with that sort of thing...

Friends Of Distinction, The
Grazin' / Highly Distinct
PS, UK Floyd Butler, Harry Elston, Jessica Cleaves and Barbara Love formed the Friends of Distinction in 1968. Before this, Butler and Elston sang in the Hi-Fi's with Marilyn McCoo and Lamont McLemore, who would go on to co- found the Fifth Dimension. Butler and Elston wanted to form a similar modern soul/psych/softpop hybrid, but one that put somewhat more emphasis on their soul and jazz roots. Performing in the hip clubs of 1960s Hollywood, The Friends of Distinction were soon discovered by American football great Jim Brown, and were signed to RCA Records. Their first major hit, 'Grazin' in the Grass', was a radical vocal reworking of the hit by Hugh Masekela, the South Africa jazz master, with lyrics written by Elston. Released in June 1969, this gold record zoomed into the Top 5 on both the pop and soul charts in the US, peaking at #3. The Friends were very prolific between 1969 and 1971, releasing five albums, and enjoying numerous pop and soul hits like their former colleagues The Fifth Dimension, appealing to very much the same sophisticated audiences. Despite this, The Friends never enjoyed quite the same profile in the UK as The Fifth Dimension...making this the first ever
serious release/reappraisal of their early (and best) material in Europe. Like the Fifth Dimension, The Friends Of Distinction were a logical projection of the crazy baroque ambition of California Softpop into the soul/jazz world, and like The Fifth Dimension, they were great!

PS, US Set against the expansive backdrop of Lake Ontario, this is by turns pensive & explosive, minimal yet eloquent. Stark ballads transit to quirky bouncing pop & choral sing-alongs merge w/ angular indie-rock as trumpets collide w/ theremin & 100 yr old pump organs mingle w/ toys & bells found in storage boxes. The result is an exuberant, kaleidoscopic record that at once unravels their sound while allowing the band to discover its identity & embrace it.

Gore Gore Girls, The
Get The Gore
PS, US All girl guitar-rock mania, more Runaways, Donnas and L7 than the Go-Gos or the Bangles. Asskickin'. Produced by Jim Diamond. POPMATTERS: "An excellent hybrid of Sonics style-garage-raunch and '60s girl-group sass that blends lacerating Gretch guitar workouts, infectious handclap rhythms and sweet 'n' sour harmonies to great effect... This is a 38-minute, mini-masterpiece of garage-punk bravado that allows the heady sound of the Gore Gore Girls to not so gently bleed into your ears. Once heard, never to be forgotten. In fact, the album even comes with its own cautionary sticker of sorts written by Lewis, which states: "To appreciate this music, you have to have a streak of wildness, a fierce independence of spirit, and an absolute belief in the strange, the unpredictable, the offbeat, and even the generally unacceptable." You have been warned." (Alan Brown)

PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "The psychedelic pop/rock fusion that Gorky's Zygotic Mynci created has never been better captured than on this, the band's debut album. With obvious influences from Robert Wyatt, the Kinks, and even the Bonzo Dog Doodah Band, you know you're in for an abnormal affair with Bwyd Time... With Gorky's, however, abnormality can be made into greatness. Their amazingly original sound is both fun and musically interesting..."

Patio [re-issue]
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "The earliest work of Welsh darlings Gorky's Zygotic Mynci can be found on the Patio CD, which compiles the band's 1991-1993 radio and studio sessions. For fans of the beauty of their largely subdued recent work, it is revelatory and essential, as it showcases the vocal and melodic gifts of Euros Childs and his band in their teenage years, when his voice was much higher, and the guitars were often much louder, but the reach for beautiful pop verses and choruses proved no less fruitless. Mix in a burgeoning folk and psychedelic sensibility characterized by keyboard smashing, plenty of sound, vocal and violin effects, and you have a set that shows just how much of a running start talentwise this group had prior to the next 5 CDs and numerous EPs they'd record..."

Gouldman, Graham
The Graham Gouldman Thing
PS, UK Somewhere between his much-respected mid '60s stint penning quirky yet classic hits for The Hollies, Herman's Hermits, The Yardbirds, Cher, Gene Pitney, Wayne Fontana and his huge success as a member of 10CC in the '70s, Manchunian pop genius Graham Gouldman could be found getting stuck into any number of interesting recording projects and bizarre pseudonym releases! Almost as an afterthought, Gouldman found himself as a bona fide solo artist, releasing the atypical R&B stomper 'Stop Stop Stop' (no relation to the Hollies tune) on Decca in 1966 before switching to RCA for his first solo album "The Graham Gouldman Thing" in 1968. The album features several of his hits ("For Your Love", "Bus Stop", "Pamela Pamela", "No Milk Today") alongside some less familiar gems ("The Impossible Years", "Pawnbroker", "Behind The Door", "My Father") re-worked in a beautiful baroque 'n' roll style setting string quartets against funky backbeats and electric guitar flash. It's in much the same ball-park as our recent Tony Hazzard Sings Tony Hazzard reissue with the added bonus of being conceived as an album and not demos. Amazingly, the album wasn't even a granted a UK release but it leaked out in America where it sold squat and then promptly disappeared, only becoming a cult collectors item over the ensuing 30-odd years. Now available; re-mastered in the usual dazzling Rev-Ola!

Grant Lee Buffalo
Copperopolis
PS, US ROLLING STONE: "Grant Lee Buffalo have always seemed like a cross between early '70s Roxy Music and early '80s R.E.M., combining campy, multilayered collages full of pop-culture imagery with dense, moody atmospherics and irresistible, jangly guitar hooks... With Copperopolis, [Grant Lee] Phillips has come up with a conceptual conceit that is rich enough to match his plaintive emoting and songwriting craftsmanship... Those sentiments are couched in musical settings that are oddly timeless: They're not exactly retro, but they certainly aren't tailored to fit the clichés of modern-rock radio. The focus is still on the guitar, lead vocals and sweet if sometimes off-kilter harmonies, but Phillips and the band broaden their palette to include vibraphone, violin and a cheesy synthesizer rescued from a thrift store. These add up to make Copperopolis a sometimes eccentric, sometimes precious but always rewarding place to visit." (Jim Derogatis)

Key, The
Fit Me In
PS, UK German Volker Langefeld and Englishman Alan Warren were the brains behind The Key, whose 1978 album "Fit Me In" is a largely undiscovered jewel in the '70s power-pop crown. Whilst similarly conceived long players by the likes of Klaatu and Liverpool Echo - who also wore their Paul McCartney/Emitt Rhodes/Eric Carmen influences on their sleeves - have become acknowledged classics, The Key's debut has remained a mystery to all but the lucky few; until now! Recorded in Germany and England, released on EMI's short-lived Emily subsidiary, the album sold well and the duo recruited a touring band embarking on a whirlwind of promotional activity, appearing on TV and radio shows everywhere. A third member, Michael Lowey, joined the group in time to record a follow-up single and a couple of unreleased tracks (all included here) but the band were dropped by EMI as quickly as they'd been picked up. First reissue anywhere ever of this much missed album!

Lindt, Virna
Play/Record
PS, UK The first release on CD of 'Play/Record', the second album by Swedish pop sophisticate Virna Lindt, originally released by The Compact Organization in 1985. Written and produced by Virna Lindt during a three-week holiday in London, Play/Record tackles girls who cannot stand the colour red, the numbing effect of the new media, and subterfuge and skulduggery in her adopted home town (the single My Home Town). The album has been digitally remastered by close collaborator Tot Taylor, and now sounds even more immaculate than before. Unfortunately Virna abandoned music forever after creating Play/Record, leaving the world a poorer place. Contemporary reviews for Play/Record: "Ms Lindt deftly conveys a sense of breezy, delirious Sixties camp. Arch instrumentals such as the title track and Add It Up are nothing short of wondrous, and the album is a delightful and accurate evocation of a period when music was allowed to be fun" (Melody Maker); "A uniquely crafted voiceover masterpiece, the diverse tempo moves from the sunny waft of single My Home Town to the more sombre tones of Any Colour But Red" (Sounds); "Lush, intelligent and very, very sexy" (Underground). The CD also features a deluxe 12 page booklet featuring original artwork and liner/recording notes.

PS, UK An extended CD reissue of 'Shiver', the debut album by Swedish pop sophisticate Virna Lindt, originally released by The Compact Organisation in 1983. Written and produced by Virna Lindt and Tot Taylor, the acclaimed Shiver album offers 12 slices of chic, Cold War pop informed by 1960s spy thriller soundtracks and musique concrete, including the singles Attention Stockholm and I Experienced Love. The album has been digitally remixed and re-modelled from the original mastertapes, and now sounds even more immaculate than before. The new edition of Shiver also features bonus track The Windmills of Your Mind, a rare Michel Legrand cover version from The Thomas Crown Affair originally recorded for the Crepuscule movie compilation Moving Soundtracks. Contemporary reviews for Shiver:"Intrepid undercover agent disguised as a top international fashion model sets out on a secret mission behind the Iron Curtain, armed only with a firm sense of fair play and a gadget-filled powder compact" (NME); "Euro-eccentric. Virna Lindt casts herself as a mysterious blonde in a loving pastiche of Continental movie music" (Sounds); "Only the surly amongst you can fail to acknowledge the splendour of Virna Lindt's new single I Experienced Love, and the equally thrilling Shiver lp, the epitome of Compact's sleek, chic Sixties tease" (The Face); "Imagine a pastiche of all those old Sixties spy series, like Danger Man, The Avengers and The Man From Uncle. Well, this would be the perfect soundtrack to go with it" (London Evening Standard). The CD also features a deluxe 12 page booklet featuring original artwork and detailed dossier on Virna Lindt. Makoto, Kawabata
Hosana Mantra
PS, US Inspired by Popol Vuh and originally released in a tiny pressing of 550 on vinyl from the inimitable Acid Mothers Temple front man. Licensed from A Silent Place. Included on this cd reissue are the bonus tracks from the even more limited 7" included with 100 copies of the original LP. Guitarist, violinist, performer on numerous traditional instruments, composer, leader of the Acid Mothers Temple, Kawabata Makoto expresses in this solo performance all his mantric cosmical vocations and spins them into space sonorities! He took inspiration from the Popol Vuh album of the seventies Hosianna Mantra, during his visit to A Silent Place headquarters in late Winter 2006. In a sunny Sunday noon spent in the country-side, eating and drinking Apulian specialities and listening to some great experimental records, Makoto and his Italian friends Pierpaolo and Pasquale, took the decision to start this cooperation. A few days later, back in Japan, Makoto recorded the Hosanna Mantra album at the Acid Mothers Temple between March 12th and 13th, using electric guitar, bouzouki and sitar. The result is this new fantastic sound coming from the cosmos. A simple gem of crystalline beauty."Music, for me, is neither something that I create, nor a form of self-expression. All kinds of sounds exist everywhere around us, and my performances solely consist of picking up these sounds, like a radio tuner, and playing them so that people can hear them. However, maybe because my reception is somewhat off, I am unable to perfectly reproduce these sounds. That is why I spend my days rehearsing. Where do these sounds come from? Who is sending them out? That is not something for me to know, and neither is there any way that I could find out. I simply believe that they come from the 'cosmos'. (Maybe other people would call God the source). Since I was a small child I have been prone to hearing ringing sounds in my ears and other sound phantasms. At the time, I believed that these were messages aimed directly at me from a UFO, and so I would gaze up at the sky. But once I started playing music myself, I came to feel that these noises were a kind of pure sound. And I promised myself that one day I would be able to play those sounds myself. It is only recently that I have begun to feel that I have been able to come close to reproducing these sounds in my solo guitar work, and in my INUI project. However, in June of 1999, I finally discovered my own 'cosmos' and I experienced an instant of total union with it!! That 'cosmos' is still tiny in size - although any cosmos can, by its very nature, be infinitely huge or infinitely small. The energy and vibrations contained within that it far exceeded my imagination in scope and beauty. I can only describe the miraculous instant when my 'cosmos' accepted my consciousness as MAGIC." Manual
Lost Days, Open Skies and Streaming Tides
PS, US The long awaited Manual double-CD 'Lost Days, Open Skies and Streaming Tides' - a collection of rarities, remixes, covers, unreleased pieces and brand new tracks - including a new collaboration with Cocteau Twins mainman Robin Guthrie. Spanning the period from 2002, around Ascend, up to now, this is a collection that covers the entire spectrum of Jonas Munks stylings; from the minimalist drone soundscapes, to the over-the-top 1980s influenced shoegazing electronica à la his masterpiece Azure Vista, from the sweet pop-influenced gems to abstract blissed-out timeless ambient. Munk's trademarks are all over the 19 pieces on this double disc set: the highly adventurous sense of composition that is still so unheard of in electronic music - always taking the listener on a colourful journey instead of relying on repetitions like pretty much every other electronic artist -, the mix of well-programmed beats and electronics against surreal, shimmering, heavily treated guitars, and the sunbathed 1980s romantic melancholia that has become Jonas Munk's signature sound. It is hard to think of a more perfect introduction to Munk's music, and for fans of his work this is simply a must!

Metric
Grow Up and Blow Away
PS, US 1999 recordings from Canadian rock conglomerate Metric. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "It's hard to believe that Metric couldn't find anyone to release this album following label changes. What's even more surprising, though, is how well it fits into their current sound despite being recorded in their infancy back in 1999. While rather void of the edgy and rock-fuelled songs that would come later like "Monster Hospital," Grow Up and Blow Away is an excellent primer of what was to come with "Live It Out" and "Old World Underground, Where Are You Now!." The light, melodic electro-pop feel is all over the title track as lead singer Emily Haines shows her talents early and often. Meanwhile, things pick up slightly with the catchy, danceable and tight "Hardwire" that instantly brings to mind the Cardigans... Haines churns out one sweet vocal after another. Metric rarely falter on this record, with "Soft Rock Star" living up to its title, a soft rock gem in the vein of Keane. The remix version is just as sweet and sugar-coated, driven by Haines angelic-like delivery. A similar approach comes during the tender, strolling "White Gold." " (Jason MacNeil)

Rasputina
Oh Perilous World [limited DCD edition]
PS, US Deluxe DCD Edition, while supplies last, then reverts to regular CD. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Rasputina's steampunk approach to rock & roll -- a trio of cellists influenced as much by Jules Verne and H.G. Wells as by Marilyn Manson and Kronos Quartet -- is so implausibly bizarre that it would be easy to overlook the band as a novelty act. Don't. Lead cellist/songwriter/mad witch Melora Creager may play up the goth queen image to the hilt, with her tightly corseted dresses and dark eyeliner, but behind the façade is a strikingly original sensibility that defies categorization. And comprehension, for that matter. Imagine Oh Perilous World then as an antiwar protest album.... Rasputina, to their credit, remain in a category of their own, sui generis, spinning out their inscrutable tales with crazed energy and genre-mashing abandon. You're unlikely to find a stranger -- or more strangely compelling -- album this year." (Andy Whitman)

Rivingtons, The
Papa Oom Mow Mow
PS, UK The Rivingtons secured their place in musical history when their first 45 reached the top half of the Billboard Hot 100 in the summer of 1962, and the insistently catchy title 'Papa Oom Mow Mow' turned every listener into a sing-a-long bass voice. The group followed this with their own answer-disc, 'Mama Oom Mow Mow', and went on to capture the dance-craze market with 'The Bird Is the Word', a crossover hit in spring 1963, while their two Hot 100 hits were merged into a medley as 'Surfin' Bird' by The Trashmen at the end of 1963, ironically out-selling the originals to reach the top 10, later being used as incidental music by movie director Stanley Kubrik in "Full Metal Jacket". The Rivingtons were more than just a rock'n'roll novelty group, however, and at the dawn of the soul era, produced a number of superb deep soul ballads, of which 'I'm Losing My Grip' and 'Deep Water' have long been hard-to-find classics of their genre. While the pedigree of featured vocalists Al Frazier and Carl White stretches back deep into the doo-wop era. This CD brings together all of the group's recordings for Liberty in the early 1960's, combining novelty rock'n'roll with wailing deep soul ballads, the title track being a much-played oldie on global radio and the ballads having been in-demand collectors' items since their previous reissue in 1991. Robeson, Paul
The Man They Couldn't Silence
PS, UK Paul Robeson: great voice, grannies favorite, acclaimed Shakespearean actor, perhaps the most beloved man in Wales? Or perhaps a subversive, dangerous, maybe commie-agitator plotting sedition against the United States Government and everything they held dear? In fact he was both yet neither! One of the voices of the century, Robeson from youth spoke out against racism and social injustice, to the extent he became politically suspect and pretty much unemployable in the US. Coming to Britain he not only starred in one of the earliest Hammer Films (produced by his friend, the Spanish left/liberal film maker Enrique Carreras, whose son was to make Hammer world famous) but also was one of the original talkie stars of Ealing studios. Back then, a rather leftist organization whose major ideological guiding light was Pen Tennyson, whose tragic early death rocked the UK film industry. Here he made films much to his taste, glorifying working class communities, inevitably set in Wales, the country where Robeson could do no wrong. So two iconic British studios were pretty much launched by the man! So here is a taste of the voice of the 20th century, the man they couldn't silence: Paul Robeson! Beautiful. This is a must for all lovers of a great voice and for those concerned with social justice. Rough Bunnies
Weisse Westen, Dreck Am Stecken
PS, US LIMITED TO 200. I once saw an interview with the members of Nirvana talking about when they toured with Shonen Knife and would cry every night while they watched their set out of sheer joy and unrivaled beauty. I didn't think much about it or even try to understand that feeling until my band played a festival in Sweden last year and the Rough Bunnies played right before us. Hailing from Malmo, this duo (with occasional guests) encapsulates a sense of innocence, joy, confusion and real youth style feelings and communicates them in a way so honestly it's hard to look away, whether or not you like the music. All the elements of ameturish-yet-immediate songwriting and musicianship that go into the songs of the Rough Bunnies could illicit comparisons to bands that came before with a similar vibe; the Velvet Underground, Beat Happening, the Vaselines, Moldy Peaches, Shonen Knife, et al.. but paying attention and really getting to know the group, you come to understand that they're not just another band that SOUNDS like those lifechanging, unsung, widely overlooked and underrated groups, nor are they trying to coyly mimic that feeling. The Rough Bunnies are the next band on that page of history, a beautiful and amazing, if dog-eared and tea stained page. This LP is their first, following three extremely limited CDRs available
only in Sweden.

Slaraffenland
Private Cinema
PS, US Based in Copenhagen, Slaraffenland found its final formation in 2002: Christian Taagehøj, Mike Taagehøj, Bjørn Heebøll, Niklas Antonsson, and Jeppe Skjold. They expertly expanded on the guitar-bass-drums standard with brass and woodwind instruments, various racketmakers, and transfixing gang vocals. Many of them childhood friends (and Mike and Christian identical twins), they've spent years developing a sound that conjures everything from free jazz to noise to melodious addictive rock.
PITCHFORK: "This Danish quintet's first full-length release on Home Tapes is a full of dark and radiant songs that compete and unite at equal turns. The album opens with the peaceful, anemic bombast of "Sleep Tight", its winds and strings chugging through crashes of cymbals and bass. An ominous chorus of voices enforces a marching cadence, but the precision breaks midway for guitars and distant howls reminiscent of Animal Collective's Campfire Songs... The album as a whole is a brave perambulation, drawing on the acidic thunderstorms and gorgeous lullabies of two great Icelandic exports (Björk on "You Win" and Sigur Rós for aching closer "How Far Would You Go"). In music, it's not often that this borderline overindulgence, where structure and uniformity are all but forgotten, works. But here the members of Slaraffenland showcase their virtuoso skills and shared vision, always modestly." (Liz Colville)

Squeeze
East Side Story [re-issue]
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "ast Side Story was originally planned as a double album with each side produced by a different "hot" producer -- Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds, and Paul McCartney were the proposed lineup. And while only Elvis Costello (along with Roger Bechirian) ended up doing the job, save for one track by Edmunds, Costello's push for decidedly un-Squeeze-like material and sympathetic production style resulted in not only the band's most diverse but also their most creatively rewarding album to date. East Side Story is definitely packed with the band's trademark bouncy Britpop numbers like "In Quintessence," "Piccadilly," "Is That Love," and "Mumbo Jumbo," but the standouts come from the unexpected turns -- the country lament of "Labeled With Love," the trippy near-psychedelia of "There's No Tomorrow," the lush and delicate "Woman Work" and "Vanity Fair," and the soulful groove of "Tempted" (the song the band is probably best known for, sung by newly added member Paul Carrack)." Starkey
Dementia
PS, US 1 Sided 12". A 12" from Philly's king of Gutter-Grimey beatz, Starkey. "Dementia" is a six minute chunk of hotness, with a bassline that sounds like a cello filled with bees that's been plugged into a rat pedal, and drums that are mean to the marrow. Starkey will probably be best remembered for the mainframe mutiny known as "Local Headines" on Werk Discs, or perhaps his remix of Drop the Lime on Ruff/Peaceoff, both of which made for a stand out ought-six. Starkey also co-runs the label Slit Jockey with compadres Dev79 and El Carnicero, which in addition to Starkey productions has featured vocal/production collabs with Mathhead, Kano, Ghetto, and a bunch of others. Each record is had stamped, and contained in a craft sleeve Ala 70's Reggae sound system dub plates. The record is also limited to 400 copies, so we think it will be a rare bird quite soon.

Starless & Bible Black
Up With The Orchadian Tide
PS, UK Fronted by French-born chanteuse Hélène Gautier, the Manchester-based trio Starless & Bible Black create music from well within the progressive British folk-rock tradition carved by Pentangle or Fairport Convention-- they draw upon any number of intertwined traditions simultaneously informed by Appalachian folk, down tempo jazz, Middle English pastoralism, and smoky continental balladry. Taking their name from Dylan Thomas' radio play Under Milkwood and not-- likely to the dismay of prog-rock zealots-- from the King Crimson album title, Starless & Bible Black perform each of their stylistic shifts with an effortless agility, resulting in a collection that captivates primarily through its graceful, almost nonchalant simplicity. The group's three core musicians each brings something unique to the discussion, all the better to help differentiate the group's sound in an overrun folk-rock market. Guitarist and home-studio recluse Peter Philipson plays with a clean, deftly syncretic style derived from British folk pioneers Davy Graham and Bert Jansch, Gautier's appealing vocals slip almost invisibly between English and French, recalling Sandy Denny's more delicate work with Fairport as well as homespun contemporaries like Lois Maffeo or Ida's Elizabeth Mitchell. Most intriguing, however, are the contributions of multi-instrumentalist Raz Ullah, whose idiosyncratic electronic drones, tape loops, and samples supply these songs with a crucial undercurrent of drama and dissonance. After releasing their first EP on their own Timbreland Recordings label, the band was spotted by Chicago based Locust Music. A new single is due for release on Static Caravan in June 2007, with a vinyl edition of their debut also finally due out at the same time, coinciding with Festival dates that are set to engage a new audience with the band. The Green man , Supersonic , Moseley Folk , Shhh and Edinburgh festivals are all ready lined up for this summer. Starless & Bible Black have played with Espers, The Earlies, Marissa Nadler, Ella Guru, Herman Dune and The Broken Family Band over the past year. The three core members also run the Timbreland Recordings label releasing material by artists such Nancy Elizabeth Cunliffe, The New Hawks, Josephine Oniyama and Little Pebble amongst others. For fans of like minded folk such as the The Earlies, Espers, Voice of the Seven Woods, Galaxie 500 and of course Pentangle.

Taylor, Shawn
A Tribe Called Quest: People's Instinctive Travels And The Paths Of Rhythm
PS, US <p> One of the finest hip-hop albums ever made, A Tribe Called Quest's debut record (featuring stone-cold classics like "Can I Kick It?" and "Bonita Applebum") took the idea of the boasting hip-hop male and turned it on its head. For many listeners, when this non-traditional, surprisingly feminine album was released, it was like hearing an entirely new form of music.
In this book, Shawn Taylor explores the creation of the album as well as the impact it had on him at the time - a 17-year-old high-school geek who was equally into hip-hop, punk, new wave, skateboarding, and Dungeons & Dragons: all of a sudden, with this one album, the world made more sense. He has spent many years investigating this album, from the packaging to the song placement to each and every sample - Shawn Taylor knows this record like he knows his tattoos, and he's finally been able to write a fascinating and highly entertaining book about it. Authors - Shawn Taylor is the author of the book Big Black Penis: Misadventures in Race and Masculinity. He conducts lectures on cultural issues at high schools and colleges up and down the West Coast. He lives in Californi.

Tuesday's Children

Tupelo Honeys
Tupelo Honeys Salute You
PS, SWEDEN Swedish siblings Joel and Linn Edin nearly gave up music, but we're glad they didn't! A wild and beautiful album, grand arrangements and bombast, they share vocal duties and engage in crazily compelling duets and the occasional cup o' twee. Closest Swedish comparisons are Vega and The Kissaway Trail, but I've seen several comparisons to Belle & Sebastian and, indeed Arcade Fire, including tastemaking blogger MUSIC IS MY RADAR: "The girl/boy twins of Tupelo Honeys are based in Stockholm, Sweden, which with just those two facts should spark your interest. They trade off vocal duties and sometimes share them. Joel songs lean toward the grandeur indie side, and Linn's tunes lean toward the twee side at times... If you take everything that you love about indie-pop bands like Belle & Sebastian and Camera Obscura (assuming that you like them because you should) and mixed it with the grandeur of Arcade Fire mixed it all together out would pop the Tupelo Honeys."

Gypsy Creams & Ginger Nuts: Sounds That Swept The Supermarkets
PS, UK For volume 10 in our Mood Mosaic series, exploring the non-traditional outlets for cool sounds of the 60's and 70's, we pay homage to the record label spawned from Associated Rediffusion TV. We've been used to compilations being released from the great productions libraries such as KPM and Chappells, whose music graced many a TV soundtrack and advertising sound bed. Our focus this time is on a production source that began life as Reditune in 1954, supplying the piped music for places new to the postwar world such as supermarkets and airports. Business was booming and in 1968 a record label arm was formed as a further outlet for the music being produced in-house called Rediffusion International Music. A good many young arrangers and session players were cutting their teeth on these sessions, further contributing cracking original tunes. Names that have become legend in lounge-core circles such as Harry Stoneham, Pete Moore, Alan Moorhouse, Tony Osborne. This is the first album compilation solely focusing on the Rediffusion catalogue and story, insuring that Gypsy Creams and Ginger Nuts is a tasty package indeed! Take Eight - Pete Moore / Next Of Kingsleigh - Harry Stoneham / Some Other Time - Alan Moorhouse N/ Cat Walk - Pete Moore N/ Goofy - Harry Stoneham N/ Gypsy Cream - Tony Evans / Lets See Action - Harry Stoneham / Martini - Harry Stoneham / Norwegian Wood - Men About Town / Rough Riding - Harry Stoneham / Rumbo - Harry Stoneham / Some Other Time -Alan Moorhouse / Soul In Space - Harry Stoneham N/ Spoofin - Tony Evans / Hold Tight - Howard Blaikley Orchestra / The Cutter - Vic Flick Soundn / Cubanana - Vic Flick Sound / Son Of A Preacher Man - Sounds Like Soul / John & Paul - Tony Osborne / Friendship Train - Rosetta Hightower / For What Its Worth - Pete Moore / Steptoe And Son - Pete Moore / The Fat Man - Pete Moore / Solar Wind - Pete Moore.

Phil's Spectre III : A Third Wall Of Soundalikes
PS, UK The third and final volume of Phil Spector soundalikes is the equal of the previous two in every way. A beguiling blend of fan favorites that we couldn't find room for on earlier volumes and tracks that we have spent years trying to license for this series, Phil's Spectre III features many selections that have never been legally reissued, appearing here from master tapes rather than from rare and worn 45s. The package features rare label shots and pix, and an authorative sleeve note from series co-compiler Mick Patrick. Verbose
Wonder
PS, JAPAN Verbose is UK based artist Allan Richmond and Wonder is his long awaited new full length album on Tokyo based label Moamoo. Following a debut album on Neo Ouija and a string of EPs on influential independent labels such as Cactus Island, Awkward Silence Recordings and Unlabel, Verbose returns in 2007 with a full length album featuring brand new material recorded during 2006 and 2007. A further departure / progression from the electronica of early releases, Wonder develops the themes introduced on the split ep with Maps and Diagrams on Awkward Silence Recordings. Sometimes beautiful, sometimes dark and chaotic, Wonder is a unique marriage of quiet and loud melancholia, undercurrents of electronica and hypnotic post rock - a soundtrack to loneliness, isolation and rejection. Musically inspired by diverse artists such as Autechre, Cult Of Luna, Mono, Mogwai and 65daysofstatic and adopting themes from an ongoing obsession with Japanese cinema and literature (Haruki Murakami in particular), Verbose takes another step towards defining his intended sound.

revolving band members, she chose the cream of the crop and formed a new group called Art Belle, then changed it to Art In Manila (a nod to radio host Art Bell's exodus to
the Phillipines). On this release, the band flirts playfully with genre wanderlust without ever abandoning cohesion. Moody slow-burners follow four-to-the-floor rockers that
butt up against serene ballads. A powerful debut.
