Parasol New Arrivals • September 25, 2007

Hey hey,

Yet another big release date is upon us, friends. With a tiny technical hiccup yesterday morning, we’re playing a little catch-up so instead of barking our usual banter at you we suggest you shimmy up the ladder and pull a perfect half gainer into the new jams below.

We promise the water’s warm yet deep but not too deep. With heavyweights like Devendra Banhart, Iron & Wine, Weakerthans, Cave Singers and Jose Gonzalez, rest assured that you’ll float instead of sink.

No life preserver needed,

Royal & Paul

Apenino
Un Rayo De Sol
PS, SPAIN Before us lies a ray of light that illuminates all his previous work and does Marco A. Maril (former Dar Ful Ful and factotum of Apenino) justice in the form of 10 brand new songs which come off with an explosive palette of sounds that even the conclusive final track can barely contain. As in previous efforts, "Un rayo de sol" was recorded at home and in Arturo Vaquero's Abrigueiro studio, and the result is a really special record, which becomes almost indispensable at first listen. The songs lead us into a mysterious world, close but inaccessible. In a way, it's a magical dimension of reality that we can only thoroughly share with the author while the music is playing: electro-acoustic pop (lead mainly by ukuleles and mandolin), woven on a subtle electronic base that incorporates a wide range of arrangements, from the most modest noise to the most spectacular strings section. Some clues for first-comers: Apenino's sound might be associated to artists such as Múm, East River Pipe, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, Khonnor, Patrick Wolf or even Ana D, to name but a (very idiosyncratic) few.

Banhart, Devendra
Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon
PS, US Recorded in Topanga Canyon in the Santa Monica mountains. Neil Young lived there while recording "After The Gold Rush" and the area has also been home to Emmylou Harris, Taj Mahal, Joni Mitchell, Mick Fleetwood, and members of The Doors. Those ghosts inhabit the sound and vibe of these recording sessions. Banhart's whole "freak folk" tag is gone, replaced with this classic, gorgeous rock album. Some songs are fragile and solipsistic, others have a pronounced tropicalia influence, and
still others are wildly electric and epic. PITCHFORK: "The notoriously kooky singer/songwriter's fifth full-length picks up the thread of 2005's schizophrenic Cripple Crow, alternating between kitschy genre exercises and the sweetly emotive folk songs that have always been his greatest strength."

Blacklist
Solidaire EP
PS, US This is the debut EP from this NYC quartet that includes former members of National Skyline and Antarctica. Inspired by groups such as The Comsat Angels, Manic Street Preachers, Suede, The Sound, and For Against, Blacklist is simultaneously celebratory and melancholy, replacing the hysterical protest song of the 20th century with anthems for a new generation weaned on amusement and starved for confrontation. Limited edition of 1000 with hand silk-screened covers.

Blind Willie Johnson
Nobody's Fault But Mine
PS, UK "Blind" Willie Johnson straddled that spooky border between blues and spirituals. Among musicians, he is considered one of the greatest slide or bottleneck guitarists, as well as one of the most revered figures of depression-era gospel music. Covered by everyone from Peter, Paul and Mary to Led Zeppelin to Fairport Convention to Bob Dylan to Beck to The White Stripes, he is one of those almost secret figures who seemingly influence everything. Ry Coooder's soundtrack to "Paris, Texas" was conceived as a distillation of his work and spirit. Willie Johnson's life in itself reads like an early blues, blinded at age seven by his own mother in a fight with his errant father, living as an itinerant preacher and singer, having to live in the burnt out ruin of his ramshackle house after a fire, on a wet mattress, which eventually helped kill him, pneumonia, malarial fever and syphilis being a powerful combo. A major figure in the "eerie voiced" blues genre typified by Robert Johnson, Skip James and others, that sense-of dread hellhound on my trail atmosphere which makes great movies...Here is a collection of Blind Willie Johnson's finest, with his slashing 12 string and scary slide all over them...Blind Willie's song Dark Was The Night, Cold Was the Ground was included on the Voyager Golden Record, sent into space with the Voyager spacecraft in 1977. Out there, there may be life forms hearing the sounds of Blind Willie Johnson. Are you ready for it? A rich, strange, and wonderful collection of Blind Willie Johnson's best! Lovingly packaged with wonderful memorabilia and detailed notes by our man in the world of I Am A Fugitive From A Chain Gang, Mr. Vic Templar! Beautifully remastered in RevOla-sonic sound by Joe Foster and Norman Blake at the secretly located Studio 3! A must for ANYONE who likes the magical, eerie and scary sound of all the people mentioned above..."adapted" by Led Zep, launched into space, covered by The White Stripes...surely you have to check out Willie's scary world of black cat bones and revelators and cold, cold graves!

Cake, The
Cream Of The Cake
PS, UK What links New Orleans Maestro Harold Battiste, Dr. John, The Soft Machine, The Daily Flash, Tiny Tim, Jack Nitsche, Sonny and Cher, Traffic, Jimi Hendrix and Ginger Baker's Airforce? THE CAKE. The last of the classic girl groups, whose two 1967/68 albums are as they say a game of two (sometimes three!) halves, classic girlgroupisms mixed with Baroque Pop, Wyrd Folk, Psychpop and club R&B, all with a wonderful good humour. Fans of the esoteric might care to know that Kevin Ayers' song "Eleanor's Cake Which Ate Her" is about the group...that they sang backing vocals on Electric Ladyland and the first Soft Machine album...and that Eleanor herself sang 'I Got You Babe' with Tiny Tim (backed by The Band) in the cult movie "You Are What You Eat". And are the albums any good? Yes, by yiminy, they are! A wonderful snapshot of the Sunset Strip, with a wonderfully decadent atmosphere for three such innocent girls...you'll just love it! The Cake recently reformed to play the prestigious launch party for the forthcoming Jimi Hendrix biopic, and who knows - they may come to your town soon... At great personal cost, RevOla presents THE CAKE! Never previously on CD cult artists...and they look hot in pictures too! Wonderfully re-mastered by Mr. Nick Robbins and with gorgeous packaging featuring wonderful pictures provided by THE CAKE and legendary rock photographer Ed Caraeff (The Cake took the shy young Ed to Monterey, where he took his first famous photos of Jimi Hendrix). There's also more than extensive liner notes by Tiny Tim biographer Chris Campion...at last, the full story can be told! Interviews with Harold Battiste, Kim Fowley, Rodney Bingenheimer, Kevin Ayers, you name them, they are here! A must for all girl group and Northern Soul fans, lovers of Baroque Pop, Psychpop and Wyrd Folk...you know the drill!

You might hear bits of Calexico, Iron & Wine, Devendra, or Lindsey Buckingham in their dense and eerie sound. Singer Pete Quirk's appealingly nasal voice simultaneously echoes Arlo Guthrie and a mosquito's buzz.

Comaneci
Volcano
PS, ITALY At the 1976 Olympics a young girl made history. With cat-like grace and a framework like a butterfly, she enchanted the public, floating between the parallels, becoming the first gymnast ever to score a perfect 10. In 2003 a three-piece outfit from Ravenna, Italy chose the last name of Nadia Comaneci for their minute but strong music project. With an ethereal and visceral voice this emotional trio is secretive but surprisingly explosive. Comaneci makes quiet but evocative music. They know how to make noise without pumping up the volume. Their acoustic chamber-pop is intimate, soothing and involving. Francesca Amati's dreamlike voice is peculiar in an already peculiar band. After two self-produced EPs, and collaboration with director Stefano Mordini for the soundtrack of his film "Provincia Meccanica" (EMI Records), and also presented at the Berlin Film Festival, the Disasters By Choice label presents Comaneci's first full-length recording named Volcano. Through twelve tracks the record synthesizes the essence of the band. Francesca's voice is perfectly supported by the soft and effective chords of Andrea Carella's guitar and by Jenny Burnazzi's emotive cello. Advised for those who still feel for simple song.

Dommisse, Orion Rigel
What I Want From You Is Sweet
PS, US On the surface their song world is marked by death, desolation & personal disaster. That the events populate a fairy-tale-like terrain is no small point. As w/ the best fantasy tales, the songs thread multiple meanings, some obvious, others occluded, through a linear narrative of disarming depth. All the while the tone is charged, w/ menace & beauty. This is classical music set to Lucio Fulci's The Beyond, folk music from some lost Balkan province where moonlight feeds all need for Vitamin D

Dragons, The
BFI
PS, US Late-60s lost treasure rescued from obscurity by Ninja Tune! A soul-ful psych-pop masterpiece with a heady groove, this album was *never released* due to label suits' inability to recognize it's genius. Beautifully played and produced, full of crazy invention and a loveably naive lack of self-consciousness, "BFI" is a miniature masterpiece, a lost classic of psych-whimsy, West Coast sexiness and serious musical chops. Surely we're ready by now..? Features the Dragon brothers who went on to become members of The Beach Boys backing band, and Daryll Dragon become The Captain of Captain & Tennille! Yes, really!

Fennesz
Hotel Parallel
PS, AUSTRIA Hotel Parallel, originally released in September 1997 by Mego, was Christian Fennesz's debut solo album. This 2007 remastered reissue includes a bonus track from a 1996 7", and a video. Following up from the EP Instrument, it was an investigation into the sonic possibilities residing in guitar-based digital music, recorded just before mobile computing devices became the norm. A far more darker and experimental work than what was to follow. Freeform noise, sliced techno beats and subtle ambient textures create a timeless work, which is an essential addition to any collection of pioneering music of the late 20th century... In addition to the original 14 tracks, two extra titles are included: "5," originally released in 1996 as a 7" single on Syntactic, which was released only in an edition of 100, and the acclaimed video made by Tina Frank/Skot for the track "Aus."

Didascalies
PS, US Now packaged w/ a DVD feat. him at work on this, his last experiment. He's considered one of the most legendary musical figures of the 20th century, whose work & aesthetic continues to influence several generations of contemporary composers. Right from the start, the idea had been to release 3 very different CDs: one horspiel, one of concrete music & one CD of instrumental works. Also documents the composition of a new version of "Tautologos," his last recorded piece, w/ woven piano & viola breaking down, starting anew in an opposite direction w/ bandoneon, DX7 & books being closed every 2 & a half min. LP
$16.25

Gonzalez, Jose
In Our Nature (ON SALE)
PS, US Long-awaited second album from former Hidden Agenda artist Jose Gonzalez. While working towards his PhD in biochemistry at the University of Gothenburg, Jose González' music career began to take shape, eventually forcing him to choose a career in music over one in research. The foundation on which he builds his songs is the same on which he built his studies - he attacks his music patiently, methodically and with great interest in finding unexpected angles. In Our Nature is about exploring these angels. In Our Nature was recorded entirely on tape at a Gothenburg studio. Though González spent a great deal of time writing these new songs - playing them over and over into a voice recorder until he was confident in their arrangements - the actual recording of the album happened very quickly, taking less than two weeks in the studio to record ten songs. While it is sonically similar to Veneer, In Our Nature shows González' growth as a songwriter. Displaying a heightened emphasis on melody and strong, focused lyrics - the album is a dark combination of softness and anger that is at once mesmerizing, intimate and hauntingly epic.

Iron And Wine
The Shepherds Dog
PS, US Iron And Wine's most ambitious and accomplished recording to date, and also the most satisfying. While many of us learned of Iron And Wine by way of the tender and spare rendering of The Postal Service's "Such Great Heights" on the "Garden State" soundtrack, those who dug deeper discovered a classic American tunesmith with a precocious musical signature. This whole album breathes. Its seductive rhythms percolate and undulate. "The Shepherd's Dog" is informed by a sensuality that brings a dreamscape to life. PITCHFORK: "After expanding his palette on both the excellent Woman King EP and 2005's full-band collaboration with Calexico, In the Reins, Sam Beam finally completes his gradual journey from lo-fi home recordings to a full-band setup. The gorgeous results find Beam and producer Brian Deck deftly exploring new sonic territory (dub, blues, and West African music, to name a few) while preserving the best aspects of Beam's earlier recordings."

Lavette, Bettye
The Scene Of The Crime
PS, US Her 2005 acclaimed release, "I've Got My Own Hell To Raise", brought well-deserved recognition to this R&B maverick who's been recording since the early 60s. Now comes the almost autobiographical "Scene Of The Crime". To make music this raw and direct, Bettye enlisted "dirty south" rockers The Drive By Truckers as her backup band. With swampy guitars, slippery Wurlitzer piano, and a driving backline, this record conjures up the spirit of great loose 70s bands like the Faces while offering Bettye an urgent, vital setting for her razor-sharp vocals. Recorded in Muscle Shoals, AL, where she recorded "Child Of The Seventies" in 1972 - a masterpiece that was shelved
then released 30 years later. Returning to Muscle Shoals was like returning to the scene of a crime; thus the album title, and the intense, personal music within.

Method Of Defiance
Inamorata
PS, US Bill Laswell enlists influential musicians Herbie Hancock, Pharoah Sanders, Buckethead, John Zorn, and others in collaborating with the cream of the drum n bass crop - represented by Evol Intent, Paradox, Submerged, Black Empire, Fanu, and others, to create a memorable masterpiece. Electronics vs. musicians in an unforgettable journey through uncharted territories. Method of Defiance is Bill Laswell's newest super group - drum n bass/electronic beat meets flesh and blood musicians. Inamorata is possibly one of his most ambitious projects in a prolific career that has included producing Grammy winning albums and singles for Herbie Hancock - who makes an appearance here on electric piano, playing over Paradox breaks. All in all, 12 beatsmiths were commissioned from the top tiers of drum n bass - including Black Sun Empire, Evol Intent, Submerged, new wunderkinds Amit, and Fanu, and also Metalheadz stalwarts Outrage and DStar. Musicians were selected from the Miles Davis era of electronic fusion (Pete Cosey, Dave Liebman) to modern virtuosos such as Buckethead and Nils Petr Molvaer. The world of free jazz and avant composition weighs in throughout, with John Zorn and the Masada Strings, Toshinori Kondo, and legendary tenor player Pharoah Sanders. The concept of combining electronic beatmasters and virtuostic players has yielded an unforgettable masterpiece - a dark vortex of electronics and musicians blending into an infinitely listenable journey.

This project sprung from a desire to record an album "as much Fleetwood Mac as Lil'Kim," so we have ourselves a homemade R+B/pop CD packed w/ primitive electro beats, low budget keyboards, spacey electronics & her own inimitable voice. A travelogue of exotic themes, musical styles & textures. Features Ben Miller (DESTROY ALL MONSTERS, THIRD BORDER) on sax.

The album is clear evidence that main Pearlfisher David Scott continues his unique musical journey with renewed joy and verve -- and that classic songwriting and well-crafted arrangements are alive and well in 2007. Ramsey Lewis Trio, The
In Person v.1: 1960 - 65
PS, UK Ramsey Lewis straddled the boundary between bop-oriented jazz and pop music. Most of his recordings (particularly by the mid-'60s) were very accessible and attracted a large non-jazz audience. The very epitome of groovy, finger poppin' soul/jazz/pop, perfect for a party, yet eminently listenable in any circumstances...with personnel including Ramsey himself, with his roots in BeBop, and Maurice White (founder of Earth Wind and Fire) the Ramsey Lewis Trio sit squarely in the very midst of soul, Jazz, funk and whatever history! As soon as you hear The Ramsey Lewis Trio, you'll feel as if you always knew them! With a whole load of amazing performances recorded live during their record-breaking tours of the 1960s, this is THE Ramsey Lewis Trio album you need...believe it! Amazing and timeless soul-jazz-pop-bossa-boogaloo you'll love! Perfectly remastered by Mr. Nick Robbins of this parish...and wonderfully packaged by Mr. Andy Morten in Zummerzet!

Red Krayola w/ Art & Language
Sighs Trapped By Liars
PS, US With the entirely new music statement, they renew their association w/ conceptual artists Art & Language. 30 yrs has mellowed the various parties not at all. The faint-hearted might want to swallow something calming before giving this a spin. They've made another try at negotiating the relationship between language & music in this new collection. Speaking in a contemporary (& frequently foul-mouthed) voice they say something we could all stand to hear, in a popular music format that we can all enjoy.

Rene, Henri And His Orchestra
Music For Bachelors
PS, UK Henri Rene...as a backroom music exec in the early modern period, he's big news in the history of the biz. In our world he is more acclaimed as one of the originators of innovations like what is today known as Space Age Bachelor pad music. He was also as a producer, arranger, and exec instrumental (see what I did there?) in creating RCA's legendary LIVING STEREO and STEREO ACTION series! Rene was born in New York City, but his parents moved back to Germany, and Rene grew up in Berlin, studying at the Royal Academy of Music in Berlin. Eventually he became Musical Director for RCA's German affiliate Electrola, as well as for the famed German movie studio, UFA. Returning to the U.S. in 1936 he became musical director for the international department of RCA Victor. In 1941, he formed the first continental-styled small pop orchestra in the US. In the 1950s, he returned to RCA as musical director in International, backing a variety of singing stars, such as Harry Belafonte and Eartha Kitt. This first collection of some of Rene's finest 1950s work uses one of his most famous covers, which features the lovely Jayne Mansfield posed seductively in a negligee, busy on the telephone (presumably calling her favorite bachelor to come over check out her hi-fi). Super collection of romantic sounds for your rendezvous! Beautifully packaged as usual! Remastered in top RevOla style by Norman Blake and Joe Foster at the top secret Studio 3 (inside an extinct volcano near
Crosshill) A must for all romantics!

Springfields, The
On An Island Of Dreams
PS, UK Dusty's springboard to success was undoubtedly The Springfields. It was the act that got Dusty on TV, got into the charts with productions by her future studio stalwarts Johnny Franz and Ivor Raymonde and, most importantly, got her to the States where she would eventually base much of her later career. Looking back, the trio appear as a welcome breath of fresh spring air in an early 1960s confused by an autumnal mix of coffee bar rock'n'roll and cocktail bar easy listening. In short, The Springfields were that unique moment in time before Dusty finally decided her roots were no longer in silver threads and golden needles but in the blonde peroxide bottle of sixties pop. Their Folk Pop crossover scored many successes and the 12 singles, 5 EPs, 2 LPs , 1 Soundtrack (2 tracks) released on The Springfields by Philips in the UK are all included here...

Tonikom
Epoch
PS, GERMANY Tonikom started as Tonik in 2002, releasing several now-deleted cd-rs and changed the name to Tonikom in 2006, documented in the album title ' Tonikom killed Tonik'. After two self-released albums, 'epoch' sees the light of day on hymen records - some kind of a logical conclusion; besides the Aphex Twin, meat beat manifesto, underworld, the orb and leftfield she also names hymen records' artist beefcake as one of her influences. 'Epoch' is an enthralling mixture: the melodic richness of idm meet straight d'n'b/breakbeat rhythms, electronic and acoustic instrumentation is enriched with well-placed sampling, sequenced patterns keep embedded ambient soundscapes together, supplemented by power and intensity known from other electronic sub-genres. a diversified, innovating, truly epoch-making release.

Turbonegro
Hot Cars and Spent Contraceptives [re-issue]
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Turbonegro's first studio album, Hot Cars and Spent Contraceptives, easily the band's noisiest and most metallic, also featured the band's first vocalist, Harry Neger. In many ways, considering the time period (1991-1992), Hot Cars sounded not unlike something recorded and released via Amphetamine Reptile Records, with its insistence upon dirty, distorted guitar riffs; feedback; and mid-paced, stripped-down, raw rock pacing and arrangements...this is a dense, noisy album, grittier and blockier than Ass Cobra, even if not quite as incisive and furious."

Turbonegro
Ass Cobra [re-issue]
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Recorded between 1995 and 1996, Ass Cobra was Turbonegro's breakthrough to the American underground. Though not quite the epic work that Apocalypse Dudes was, Ass Cobra nonetheless paves the way harshly, with a sinister wash of cymbals and loud guitars, articulate riffs, and stellar songwriting -- think Poison Idea meets Alice Cooper. It is here, also, where Turbonegro developed their signature look: sailor caps, denim from head to toe, mustaches all around, and decidedly butch homoerotic accoutrements. Indeed, the subject matter on Ass Cobra does not stray far from such themes; the album is unapologetically sexual, and not in a polite manner -- songs like "The Midnight NAMBLA," "I Got Erection," and "Young Boys Feet" hammer them home with leather-whipped fury. Part of that may be gallows humor, part of that might be truth, and that's for the listener to figure out. It's the dubiousness of that question that is the most troubling. The cover art is a clever perversion of the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds. Though Turbonegro did quite a bit of recording prior to this album, this was the one that set the pace, and the one that enabled them to record their masterpiece, Apocalypse Dudes." (Patrick Kennedy)

Turbonegro
Apocalypse Dudes [re-issue]
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "When other European rockers of the '90s were being influenced by Pearl Jam, Sevendust, or Radiohead, Oslo, Norway's Turbonegro decided to provide a throwback to the decadent, hedonistic glam metal, heavy metal, and hard rock of the '70s and '80s. Combine the influence of punk rock with traces of Alice Cooper, Mötley Crüe, Judas Priest, or Quiet Riot, and you've got Apocalypse Dudes, an in-your-face album that thrives on wild, rowdy, bratty fun. The whole thing is decidedly over-the-top...a very entertaining and humorous caricature of pop-metal, hard rock, and punk. In fact, it's hard to miss the parallels between Apocalypse Dudes and Spinal Tap. But outrageousness alone wouldn't make this CD worthwhile -- thankfully, Turbonegro has a lot of catchy, infectious hooks to back itself up." (Alex Henderson)

Turbonegro
Darkness Forever! Between the Lines in Hamburg and Oslo! [re-issue]
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Darkness Forever is quite a document of this band's abilities in the live arena. In the punk rock realm, a recording with this much limber-limbed groove, musicianship, poise, and professionalism hasn't been seen since Black Flag's Who's Got the 101/2? in 1986. Darkness Forever catalogs the choice cuts stylishly, deftly, and with power and fury. Euroboy's guitar positively sizzles, and the rest of the band is in fine form, jamming and adding frills not found on the studio albums."

Turbonegro
Never Is Forever [re-issue]
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Never Is Forever is a searching rock disc recorded and issued initially in 1994. Though not as punishing, loud, or clearly directed as the follow-up, Ass Cobra, it is nonetheless a powerful document, even if Turbonegro is clearly still searching for their ultimate voice. To that end, the band experiments with some delicate acoustic arrangements, soaring pop/rock anthems, and heavier tracks that could have found a home on Ass Cobra. This is clearly the band's most reflective and -- dare it be said -- melancholic statement..."

A Taste Of Ra
Morning of My Life (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 23RD)
PS, SWEDEN This is the third and final album in the A Taste of Ra trilogy. Nicolai Dunger, and the cloak of mystery behind the Taste of Ra project has captivated many with its various incarnations of free-folk meanderings, Tim Buckley jazz-howl and Swedish pastoral indie-hum. Dunger describes Morning of My Life as follows: "When we moved to the tent and the light was golden and we were young, and the magazine was all there was to bring, and you woke in the night when the birds were singing just for you and the smell of soil and the warm breath over through you, ohh it moved you. All there was to it, was the morning of my life." He also describes that the overall idea behind the first two A Taste of Ra records was for pure vocal and instrumental experimentation -- using recording techniques on a more personal level. On this final record in the trilogy, he takes a different approach, starting off with one song that he developed together with Swedish musician, songwriter and producer, Jari Haapalainen. The song naturally broke up into six movements, creating a film-like, dramatic pattern, and Johan Berthling made some beautiful arrangements for three of the movements. Starsailor-esque vocals, jazzy horns and loose, clattering drums mix with piano, harp and guitar arpeggios -- just as much of an Impressionistic song cycle as Van Morrison's Astral Weeks.

As with previous records Matchless Years was recorded by Charles Newman at Mother West Studio, NYC. On Matchless Years Aarktica embraces the spirit of the best works of brethren Jesus And Mary Chain, Spiritualized, and Magnetic Fields, as well as a progression toward "dark disco" and a meshing of 1950's vocal pop sensibilities atop Aarktica's established atmospheric sound. All Sides
Dedalus (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 16th)
PS, UK Following two EPs on Make Mine Music and Chat Blanc Records, and a collaborative album with Troum on Old Europa Café, "Dedalus" is the first full-length album from Nina Kernicke aka All Sides. Drawing influence from the likes of Slowdive, Radiohead, Scorn, Meat Beat Manifesto and Mark Hollis, to name but a few. Nina's music has been greeted with praise from many quarters, including Boomkat who noted that the music of All Sides successfully merged many styles into a "euphoric" blend. "Dedalus" is partly an expression and reflection of Nina's personal experiences, but it was also inspired by recording the album "Shutun" and touring Poland, Finland, Canada and USA with Troum, an experimental, drone outfit based in Nina's hometown of Bremen, Germany. The album's title is, in part, a reference to the character Stephen Dedalus in the James Joyce's classic novel Ulysses. The title track gives a clearer indication about the context, in its use of a sample from a cinematic version of the novel, in which Dedalus walks along a beach, looking out to sea, becoming aware of his loneliness. Simultaneously, the title refers to the character from Greek mythology whose son Icarus dies during their escape from Crete - Dedalus and Icarus build wings out of feathers and wax and, in spite of warnings, Icarus flies too high and too close to the sun, melting the wax and plunging him into the sea. References to both of these can be found throughout the album, but they are as much metaphors for Nina's personal experiences as they are literary references. The CD comes housed in luxurious cardboard and felt packaging, limited to 500 copies.

Perhaps more so than ever before, 'Horrible Oracle Blessedness' is filled with his trademark sugary hooks and pristine production that will leave you with a smile on your face and a head full of melodies you won't stop humming. Ana D
Satélite 99 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 16TH)
PS, SPAIN In October it will be ten years since we released one of the most unique records that have ever been done in Spain and, we dare say, elsewhere. Ana D has become since then a legendary name to whisper to each other's ears, and we want to celebrate the tenth anniversary of her only official album as it deserves: with a full re-release that rises to its condition of lost classic album, joining an extra bonus album that enhances even more the new release. Today, "Satélite 99" sounds as fascinatingly weird and beautiful as it did the first day. As if a more sophisticated Martin Rev collaborated with a tattooed, black-haired Nancy Sinatra, or with a mysteriously distant Astrud Gilberto, on this album Ana D and her companions, producers and arrangers (Ibon Errazkin and Javier Corcobado) used vintage instruments and forgotten beat boxes to create their own kind of "acoustic synth-pop", with references that ranged from Kur Weill and Serge Gainsbourg to SUICIDE themselves.

PS, NORWAY Arp is the most recent project of Alexis Georgopoulos, formerly of Tussle & The Alps. As an emblem of Alexis' commitment to "natural electronic music" (bridging the natural and electronic worlds), nearly all of In Light was recorded live. Very few loops were used - in fact, only one. This gesture was meant to bring back some of the rough (re: natural) edges that have been lost in so much "Electronic Music" today. In Light is a luminous album of warm, pulsing music.

His off-key lilt hangs like a seductive pink mist, and settles deeply; you'll hear these songs long after they're over. Bevel
Phoenician Terrane (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 9TH)
PS, US Phoenician Terrane, BEVEL's first release for Contraphonic, is a record of densely orchestrated American wonder. This is the Great American Songbook as discovered by the descendants of Harry Partch and Charles Ives upon a rock in the sand. As a whole, Phoenician Terrane evolves over a cinematic arc, leading the listener across pages of a sonic story, a historical journey parlayed through a personal lens. Languidly plucked guitar lines pave trails amongst violin and flute embellishments, transient Gypsy-laden tones swash about warm synthesizers, with everything cast in a soft, psychedelic haze. Further buttressed by Nuon's haunted vocal delivery, the songs create a tapestry of tales related in the realm of the surreal. Assembled with a cast of contributors featuring members of Califone, Boxhead Ensemble, and Manishevitz, among others, Phoenician Terrane is BEVEL's finest work to date.

David Thomas Broughton vs. 7 Herz (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 2ND)

Bryars, Gavin
Hommages (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 13TH)
PS, UK Remastered. Originally released in November 1981 on Les Disques du Crepuscule, Hommages was recorded in Leicester in February 1981 and produced by noted Belgian new music composer Wim Mertens. The album was conceived as a series of diverse homage's to other composers, which include Bill Evans (My First Homage), Ferruccio Busoni and Gustav Holst (The English Mail-Coach and The Vespertine Park) and Percy Grainger (Hi-Tremolo). Featured musicians included Andrew Bilham, Ronald Reah, Andrew Renshaw, Nigel Shipway, Dave Smith, John White and Marie Wilson, as well as Gavin Bryars himself on piano and vibraphone. The album is the only one that documents the important period between Bryars' early experimental music and later works from Medea onwards, as well as his enthusiasm for small composer/performer ensembles. The new 63 minute digital remaster of Hommages now includes two bonus tracks composed and recorded by Bryars during the same period: Danse Dieppoise, and the lengthy piano piece Out of Zaleski's Gazebo. The booklet features extensive notes by Gavin Bryars on the origin and performance of all six pieces, and preserves the original album cover artwork by Marc Borgers.

Bunyan, Vashti
Some Things Just Stick In Your Mind (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 2ND)
PS, US .Re-mastered from a rare existing copy of the original, this is a classic Stonesstyle pop stomper w/a rich, full orchestral effect & Bunyan's inimitable vocals as the center-point. Both eternal yet very much of its time, the record may have gained a slight patina of crackle and pop, yet has lost none of its charm through the decade.

Anthology 1968-1993 [remaster] (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 23RD)
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "For listeners daunted by Can's long and winding discography, Anthology 1968-1993 presents short-form highlights like "Spoon," "Future Days," "Moonshake," "She Brings the Rain," and 25 others. Yes, the albums are better places to hear all of these tracks, and there's a typically Cannish disregard for chronology or narrative (i.e., don't hope for liner notes), but this double-disc set is an excellent introduction to the band's 25-year career." Yet Celebration has just enough holy chaos and free-flung tribal drumming to warrant the much-hyped comparison...nothing short of brilliant" - Magnet.

Club 8
The Boy Who Couldn't Stop Dreaming (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 2ND)
PS, SWEDEN Club 8 is finally back with their long awaited sixth album. "The boy who couldn't stop dreaming" is everything we'd ever hoped it would be - it's pop music at it's most profound, balancing perfectly between sunshine and melancholia. Twelve songs that'll make you sing along about death while dreaming of summer days. A glorious return to say the least. After having released three albums in just over two years time, very few expected they'd have to wait over four years for a new Club 8 album. Some even started to assume the band had split up. In May 2007 the band returned with the amazing Tropicalia-influenced "Whatever you want" which rapidly became a huge blog hit - top 10 most blogged songs according to music blog aggregator Elbo.ws The waiting's been so long we can almost, but just almost, talk about a comeback album. However, waiting's not always a bad thing. Not only has songwriter Johan Angergård released three albums with The Legends and one with Acid House Kings in the time in between - Club 8 has evolved in to one of the most personal and emotional bands around today. Not that previous albums have lacked emotional depth, that's far from the truth, but "The boy who couldn't stop dreaming" is truly different and a very very special album. The fleeting of life and time, and the nearness of death arrives in the shape of twelve perfect pop songs in a summer dress. It's mix of sunshine and melancholia is just as unique as it's profoundly moving.

PS, UK What? Six track mini-album. Latest project of London's David Sheppard of ELLIS ISLAND SOUND. David is currently finishing his giant biography of BRIAN ENO and playing live with the Ellis Island Sound Orchestra. It is highly filmic music, adult (in the best sense), atmospheric, dark chansonnier, made with guitars, lutes, cellos, brass, in primary colors and sophisticated grain. Tinhorn Home Companion Library Volume One is a luxury label show reel, the first of many sharp and thoughtful projects to come from a new, independent label project called TINHORN. WHO? CONTINENTAL FILM NIGHT: Javier Martí (Valencia based talent discovered by Sheppard and erstwhile of the Spanish group MUDO) Peter Wix (Jean Paul Special) David Sheppard (Ellis Island Sound; Phelan Sheppard; State River Widening; Wisdom of Harry). TELLERMAN: Peter Wix (Jean Paul Special. Ex-Londoner based in Madrid. This is his solo songwriting project) WHERE? Recorded in Spain. Anglo Spanish project. Unashamedly independent. PS, US 4 song EP from some French kid(s?) making with the Memphis-sound garage-punk racket. The title cut and "Contaminated" are definitely 'Teenage Hate'-esque. Davis, Ben Forrest
Roughs (ON SALE / PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 2007)
PS, US Re-release of 'Roughs' (on Velvet Crusher Ric Menck's Bird Song label) by former and founding member of the Los Angeles rock band Sugarcult. Here, Ben's doing his very own laid-back soft-rock thing, with a little dab of country & western, quite a departure from Sugarcult's highly-toughted tautness. Leaving behind a life of rock-n-roll excess, this enigmatic album qualifies as emancipation and exorcism, a collection of intimate, personal songs about love and self-destruction. Not so far afield from singer-songwriterly, orch-popping Parasol faves like Ken Stringfellow and his Posies, Kevin Tihista and his Red Terror, Jack Logan & Bob Kimbell, June & The Exit Wounds, and The Velvet Crush.

Demons
Evocation (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 2ND)
PS, US Consisting of Nate Young (of Wolf Eyes) and Steve Kenney, Demons explore near-epileptic fits of droning analog synth textures that elicit comfortable remembrances of electronic-obsessed forefathers like Stockhausen and Cluster whilst simultaneously bludgeoning forward with the grating and scraping atonal complexities of Whitehouse and Throbbing Gristle. Having already rallied a feverous flux of supporters with intense psychedelic multi-media performances and a slew of cryptic releases, among them this year's fetishistic Life Destroyer box set, Evocation is an appropriately elaborate and accomplished approximation of their shrewd identity. Evocation is Demons first official CD, with artwork contributed by the duo's frequent visual collaborator Alivia Zivich.

Digital Dance
Treatment (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 6TH)
PS, UK 16 tracks. The definitive anthology by cult Belgian post-punk band Digital Dance, a group often name-checked but seldom heard. One of the first and best new wave bands in Belgium, Digital Dance formed in Brussels in July 1978 by singer/guitarist Jerry WX and guitarist Stephan Barbery. The group, which also included keyboard player Jean-Marc Lederman, released their first single on Disques Vogue in late 1979. Digital dance recorded four singles - Radio-Activity, Faulty, Treatment and Three Meanings - as well as a self-titled cassette album, and another single under the name Jung. Although John Peel championed Faulty in the UK, and the band played several high profile live shows (including a residency at the Gibus Club in Paris and a support slot with Joy Division at Plan K in January 1980), Digital Dance failed to break through and split early in 1982. Various members subsequently played in groups as diverse as Fad Gadget, Marine, The Revenge, Kid Montana, Snowy Red, The Weathermen, The Names and Ink. Sadly singer Jerry died in 2000. As well as new artwork, the 70 minute CD also includes detailed sleeve notes and an assortment of period images and graphics.

Favorita
S-T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 30TH)
PS, CANADA Twelve years after it was recorded but never released, Popsicle Recordings will present the sole album from Swedish indiepop pioneers Favorita. The brainchild of former Beagle and current Metro Jets frontman Magnus Borjeson, Favorita fell foul of record company politics on the eve of this album's 1997 release and it never saw the light of day. The band split up, the album was forgotten. Popsicle Recordings didn't want Favorita to pass into obscurity. Sure, the album has circulated as a bootleg among discerning music lovers for five or six years, but an album this good deserves a shot at reaching a wider audience. So they dusted off the master tapes, added eight bonus cuts and both of the band's low-budget videos, unearthed photos from the two promo shoots the band did and coaxed some inspired sleeve notes from noted Swedish journalist and blogger (and former Beagle drummer) Anders Mildner. The result is the definitive Favorita experience. Everything you could want to know about this exceptional but criminally short-lived band, there on one disc.

Fine Arts Showcase, The
Sings Rough Bunnies (DELAYED, PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 2007)
PS, SWEDEN Third album from Gustaf Kjellvander's Fine Arts Showcase, and the follow-up to his 110% brilliant. The short version: TFAS covers 11 song by Swedish cult-twee-punk-lofi duo The Rough Bunnies. Highly recommended. The long version: This is an album of many stories. Gustaf Kjellvander and his friends in The Fine Arts Showcase have made a covers album, entirely based on songs from the Swedish, rather unknown, jangly, lo-fi band Rough Bunnies. Why is that? Let's make Gustaf himself explain: "I was first introduced to Anna Vermina and her cousin Frida, the founding members of Rough Bunnies and Inside Riot, through mutual friends. Frida gave me a CD-R just days before they were about to move to Berlin. About six months later I was looking for someone to rent my spare room. I bumped into Frida by chance, who told me she had moved back from Berlin to Malmö and needed a place to stay - so she moved in. I was already smitten by Inside Riot at this time, and when Frida played me the songs they had recorded in Berlin, along with the Rough Bunnies record C-sides, it blew me away. I played it to everyone who came over to my house. They became an obsession that carries on to this day. I knew I wanted the Fine Arts Showcase to cover their songs. The problem was that with a catalogue of songs as amazing as theirs it was hard to pick just one, so I came up with the idea that we should do an entire record instead (in the Merle Haggard sings Jimmy Rodgers tradition). And here it is: a musical love letter to two of my favorite songwriters, a celebration of the pop geniuses of the Vermina family. Rough Bunnies (and their twin group Inside Riot) have inspired me more than any other band this side of the millennium and this record is my way of thanking them. Rough Bunnies Saved My Life" - Gustaf Kjellvander

Five O'Clock Heroes
Bend to the Breaks (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 2ND)
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "It seems like the early 21st century is loaded with alt rock acts that sound like new wave acts circa the late '70s/early '80s. But probably in most cases, it's a haphazard coincidence, as the groups in question were merely influenced by third generation new wavers - who have no bloody idea who the heck Joe Jackson is. But then there is Five O'Clock Heroes, who specialize in a style known as 'jerk pop' (due to their fondness for slashing "Roxanne"-esque guitar lines), and draws from a musical vocabulary that is unmistakably straight from Look Sharp! and This Year's Model on their 2007 debut, 'Bend to the Breaks'... Sticky sweet power pop (which is entirely keyboard-less) never goes out of style -- especially when it's loaded with hooks -- and Five O'Clock Heroes sure can craft a instantly memorable pop gem, as 'Bend to the Breaks' is loaded with 'em."
