Parasol New Arrivals • March 25, 2008

“Collecting is creepy. Record collectors put each other down for their various fixations. Everybody is convinced that his way of collecting is superior. They look down on casual collectors, who are just accumulators -- the kind who’ll just pick up anything and let it pile up. A true collector is more of a connoisseur, and that’s the good thing about collecting. It creates a connoisseurship to sort out what’s worthwhile in the culture and what isn’t. Wealthy art collectors in this country have sorted out who the great artists are. If you’re collecting a lot of objects of one particular kind, you develop a very acute sense of discrimination.”

“Any of the younger guys who get into collecting are quirky and oddball types, pretty maladjusted people. They’re not into hanging around in bars and picking up chicks or nothing. If they have a girlfriend at all it’s amazing. And the older collectors I know, a lot of them just have their little room down in the basement where they go and listen. They don’t share it with anyone, and their wives don’t know anything about it. So when they die, the vultures start descending.” - Robert Crumb

Amen.

Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week

The Second Band "The Definite Form" CD (Orange Grammofon) ON SALE: $13.00
Incredible new album. With a sound that has matured from adorable to drop-dead gorgeous in the space of time between releases (check out their earlier EP and mini-album) The Second Band’s new album, The Definite Form, is more epic, more rapturous and more assured than ever, an orchestral-pop gem that will definitely be in my Top 10 for 2008. The Orebo, Sweden combo’s soulful brass-driven euphoria is still evident, but this time out, older and wiser, it’s tempered with a feeling of heartbreak and melancholy that is sweetly Swedish. Fans of The Beautiful South (arrangements), Headlights (sweetness), Bright Eyes (earnestness), Okkervil River (rustic charm) and Shout Out Louds (a manic melancholia) will find plenty to swoon to here... Sound samples available on our front page.

Jim's Pick of the Best New Nordic Music

Montys Loco "Farewell Mr. Happy" CD (NONS) $15.00
With their last album, Man Overboard, still in regular rotation we welcome with open arms these Swedish electro-pop mavens' new recordings. Farewell Mr. Happy is yet another beautiful and bizarre collection of uncompromising looped and sampled dark-dreamery, comparable to The Knife and Bjork, with a sinister Phil Spector vibe. Their sonic habitat remains a sleepy, hyper-sensual sonic otherworld, but the edges here aren't softened at all, in fact the opposite is true. The new songs are dangerously serrated and sprinkled with oldchool industrial flourishes, but of course it's Anja Bigrell and Marie Eklund's woozy and winsome vocal aerobatics that stir the spirits and tug purposefully at the heartstrings. Highly recommended. Sound samples available on our front page.

13 Ghosts
Strangest Colored Lights
PS, US The Strangest Colored Lights represents the first time since 2002 that 13ghosts' recordings have involved a full and consistent line-up of musicians; the same five guys arranged and performed the material on every song, with the exception of the horn section in Riverside (Chad Fisher and Chip Crotts) and a female vocal passage in Photographs (Amber Quick). Like Cicada, this album spans a large and diverse cross-section of genres (electronica, grand Pink-Floydesque passages, country-sludge, psychedelic, spaghetti-western, hard-edged pop and dark acoustic), and like Cicada it is long and sprawling, clocking in at just over 55 minutes. The differences between Cicada and The Strangest Colored Lights lie in the band's focus, their relentless attention to detail (though fans of 13ghosts' lo-fi production aesthetic will not be disappointed; it was, after all, recorded in a basement), and a newfound harmony between Russell's and Armstrong's sometime disparate songwriting styles. With this new record, 13ghosts has finally united their many voices under one soaring and cinematic vision. POPMATTERS: "Southern rock, spiritual psychedelia, magnificent poetry and masterful playing converge on 13ghosts' monumental fourth album."

Alaska In Winter
Dance Party in the Balkans
PS, US Art student Brandon Bethancourt takes much of his influence from all his early years of growing up in the (American) South West, immersed in the musical low-rider culture of Sante Fe, New Mexico, as well as a slight Arabian influence on the part of his parents & their Byzantine church music. He has recently toured the US & Canada w/ Beirut.

Am-Boy
Clayton's Hideout
PS, US Last copies. Forrest Wolf returns with his sophomore effort, a 10 track nugget of kaleidoscopic melodies. Perpetuating his trademark "Walt Disney World on acid" brand of nostalgic electronics, this particular journey is a limited vinyl-only affair. The synths have sheen, the reverb is whale-like at times, and the rhythms are programmed simply and effortlessly to lock down the pace. Am-Boy maps out a gauzy route through his own daydream nation, inviting you to get lost for 35 minutes and ease away from reality. Very spliff friendly. Not a departure, but an upgrade from his debut, Floridian, this Long Player proves the songs to be better and frankly, more psychedelic. The moods vacillate between the up tempo chime of opener "Clayton's Hideout" to the slack-keyed wooziness of "I am boy." "Ready to Go Home" and "Glass Wails" represent two of the best tracks Am-boy has given us with their clipclop rhythms, warm bass lines and hallucinatory toppings. The 3 tracks closing out side two are an ambient postcard from the depths of wonderment, awaiting the perfect science fiction images to accompany the walk home. Warm, rich and a bit twisted, Clayton's Hideout is a charming addition to the growing Wobblyhead catalog.

Bearsuit
OH:IO
PS, US Fresh out of hiding, six piece Bearsuit have a whole heap of brand-spanking-new shonky pop songs replete with glitter, knives, smiles, shouts and catchy choruses to make you feel happy sad and slightly scared at the same time. Subjects include terrible bloodthirsty gangs of tiny children, getting jiggy with dinosaurs, fist-fighting your younger self, signing up for intergalactic warfare, finding love, the colonization of the solar system, the search for tangible proof of a 'soul', and a dirty old crow: you know: the usual shit. Already championed by the likes of Steve Lamacq, Huw Stevens, Phill Jupitus, XFM, the NME, Artrocker and Plan B. With a live show including flute, guitars, keyboards, samples, cornet, singing, bells, accordion, theremin, drums, oh and a keytar plus a variety of outlandish stage gear - blood soaked prom dresses, marching bands, 'nurses of death' outfits, spacemen and silver bear-botwear to name but a few - Bearsuit are certainly a band to catch live! here's some nice review quotes what people have said. This limited edition 3 cd set contains all of three of their Homestead albums, Boo-Boo, Heavens, and Crap, plus several unreleased tracks and material from their post-Epic career in the early 90's. Black Fortress of Opium
S-T
PS, US Inspired by the lore surrounding a little town in Turkey , Afyonkarahisar, which translates into "Black Fortress of Opium." Their self-titled debut album was recorded in Brooklyn, NY by Martin Bisi (IGGY POP, SONIC YOUTH, DRESDEN DOLLS) over the course of seven months in 2007. The 10 original tracks are often reminiscent of Middle or Near Eastern sounds channeled through American folk instrumentation (mandolin, banjo) as well as e-bowed electric guitars, with female vocals that alternate between powerful and soulful to soft and mournful.

PS, US This finds a slightly reshuffled lineup & a renewed emphasis on kicking out raw, percussive takes on both traditional Appalachian & original material. The Twigs work the fine line between the Friday night oldtime dance party & the wellspring of grim & evocative tragedy that runs through the tradition, delivering these laments, travelogues, & wild whoops w/ sawing, rocking joy.

NEW YORK TIMES: "Mr. Blackshaw plays 12-string acoustic guitar, picking endlessly circling, intertwining arpeggios: stately, tolling ones on the lower strings and faster ones, verging on tremolo, up above. PS, US Karl Blau is a talented, busy guy. A member of the MICROPHONES, one third of D+ w/ Phil Elvrum & Bret Lunsford (BEAT HAPPENING), & most recently the bassist for LAURA VIERS' back up band. The landmark album of his career carried by up & coming Chicago label Whistler, AM is his psych-folk ode to author A.A. Milne. Bread, Love & Dreams
The Strange Tale of Captain Shannon and the Hunchback from Gigha [re-issue]
PS, UK Recorded simultaneously with their classic Amaryllis album and released in 1970 on the Decca label, this psychedelic folk landmark showcases the talents of Edinburgh's David McNiven and Angie Rew, with one spellbinding track from former bandmate Carolyn Davis. Sympathetically produced by Ray Horricks (Davy Graham, Human Beast), it's a superb collection that ranges from the hard-rocking "Masquerade" to the gorgeous "Butterfly Land," beautiful "Purple Hazy Melancholy" and epic title track. Featuring support from Danny Thompson and Terry Cox of Pentangle, it's simply essential for all fans of British acid folk.

Cahoone, Sera
Only As The Day Is Long
PS, US Despite being an accomplished guitarist and songwriter, Sera preferred to stay behind the drum kit (drumming for the likes of Carissa's Wierd, LA musician Patrick Park, and on the Band Of Horses' debut, "Everything All The Time") until one tour across the US with Park in 2006. She found herself inspired by the landscape and she wrote an album in her thoughts as they drove along the blue highways and back roads of the expansive west and the plains. "...a breathtaking collection of sad and dusky songs that reveal an artist of remarkable depth as well as a truly stunning voice" - The Stranger.

Chapin Sisters
Lake Bottom
PS, US PREFIX MAG: "The singer-songwriter/folk vibe that so dominated Los Angeles in the early '70s can be heard echoing today through acts like Lavender Diamond, Winter Flowers, and the Chapin Sisters. Unlike some other bands with faux family names, the three ladies here are actual sisters: Abigail and Lily Chapin are the daughters of singer-songwriter Tom Chapin, and Jessica Craven is their half-sister whose father is horror director Wes Craven. Perhaps that explains why the band has a bit of a morbid side. The Sisters list the Manson Family as an influence, and Lake Bottom's most jarringly emotional song is the breakup-as-end-all "Kill Me Now." But the band also shows flashes of humor, on songs like "Girlfriend." This debut full-length was produced by Thom Monahan, a "freak-folk" scene mainstay who has worked with Devendra Banhart and Vetiver, and Mike Daly, who's produced work for Whiskeytown and Grace Potter."

Chevron
Tuff Shite
PS, GERMANY Chevron's intricate beats and party anthems get down and dirty with "Tuff Shite". Partly inspired by Chevron's hometown, and partly the result of his extensive live experience all throughout Europe, the six complex, crisp and tongue-in-cheek tracks presented here are also a lot more than just "tuff". Upbeat and clear, the A side displays (again, as if necessary) Chevron's talent for complex rhythms and catchy melodies. Flip the record, and the B side delivers the dancefloor-packing tracks, where jungle, hardcore and breakcore collide in a tasty and incisive way. Welcome to Blackpool, don't let the comets hit you on the way to the club.

Chris Clark has earned his reputation as one of the world's most adventurous dance producers w/ a catalog of twists & turns that owe just as much to the avant-garde as they do to the dancefloor. Crow Tongue
Ghost Eye Seeker
PS, US Crow Tongue's first full length finds them summoning distant howls from the fog of night. Fingerpicked strings & Eastern instruments recall CT's musical heritage (the acid-folk of Stone Breath), but here they are layered with primitive homemade instruments, circuit-bent electronics & mantric drones. "Ghost Eye Gaze" opens the album with a 5-part drone-raga, improvised to back a shamanic chant, pushing from free-folk to free-noise & back again. "Seeker" follows in 2 parts with bass dulcimer & tablas leading into an electric swarmandal excursion. The album closes with "Candle, Corpse, and Bell" where Crow Tongue shows their dub influence with guimbri & tabla-machine slowly spinning through the echochamber.

Destroyer
Trouble in Dreams
PS, US Dan Bejar and his alias Destroyer are certainly a household name by now, well at least amongst the households that shop at Trader Joe's, read Pitchfork, and/or voted in the primaries this year. Trouble In Dreams is Bejar's 8th solo record and follow-up to 2006's magnum opus, Destroyer's Rubies. The same backing band and producer are in tow here, as are Bejar's brand name obtusely self-referential lyrics. This time around though we have vinyl! Exciting news for the demographic mentioned above, as Bejar's previous works have been never before been available on LP format.

DeVotchKa
A Mad and Faithful Telling
PS, US The times have finally caught up with acclaimed Denver quartet DeVotchKa. Not long ago when the band unloaded their instruments - a violin, a tuba and an accordion, among others - into a rock club, they were told they must be in the wrong place. They created music that was Grammy nominated (DeVotchKa created the soundtrack for the indie smash Oscar winning film Little Miss Sunshine) without the benefit of a huge promotion team or runaway budget, instead relying only on their own efforts by self-releasing their records. And they crafted gems of songs by mixing a beautiful blend of Eastern European bohemia, American prairie rock and distinctive indie and called it pop, rather than world, music. Now, the band is au courant, poised to shine on with their Anti- Records debut A Mad and Faithful Telling. From the cinematic richness of "Transliterator" to the modern pop experiment of "The Clockwise Witness," to the soaring and wrenching "Undone," DeVotchKa have produced a career-defining record and the world is listening.

THE ONION: "DeVotchkA gets pegged with all kinds of farfetched descriptions - but despite all their trappings, which include admittedly exotic elements, Nick Urata and company concoct impeccable pop songs, the kind that fuse memory and memorability with swaying darkness and glittering soul."

AVERSION: "A Mad and Faithful Telling is still a whirling dervish of post-millennial multiculturalism, though, an artifact from an alternate universe where Sarajevo and Prague are magnets for hipsters to rival Brooklyn. Presenting a singular mix where Weakerthans-like urban folk blends with Latin flavors and Baltic folk music, DeVotchKa has a line on an epic, cinematic sound that it's hard to imagine any other act managing to duplicate, let alone rival."

The usual folk guitar strummings of their previous releases have been replaced with an eclectic mix of electronically-informed, epic song structures and a focused lyrical intensity. They have used 7 to explore other sonic horizons. 7 is a truly adventurous album in all regards; an album that has ventured further beyond any music created by the Doleful Lions in the past. Eleh's track is a slight departure from the sub-sonic bass-heavy drones of their first two records. This time around there is more emphasis on a glistening shimmer. Sun Circle's Important debut is psychoacoustic minimalism meets psychedelic maximalism: ecstatic high-volume drones, long-form trance musics & peace noise performed with bowed strings, voices, organs, percussion & world instruments.

His music has been called folk, blues, bluegrass, noise, and even (gasp!) new age. On this EP, Fahey uses heavy reverb, electric slide & feedback to create an eerie mood. Farmer's Market
Surfin' USSR
PS, US One of Norway's most popular live bands, Farmers Market is a mixture of Bulgarian folk music, jazz standards, popular music and humor. INK 19: "Instantly recognizable by its melody, if not its lyrics (because they're Norwegian), "Lodtschitze Mini Maritza," Farmer's Market's rendition of the 43-year-old Gerry & the Pacemakers tune, "Ferry Cross the Mersey," is one of the freshest tracks on the album. Though some listeners may prefer jazzy numbers like "Anyone Who Remembers Vladiwoodstock Wasn't There," "Kalashnikov Wedding," and "One Day, Son, All I Own Will Still Belong to the State," my predilection is for the folksy, traditional title track along with "Dissident Harmony Sisters Camel Call," "To Hell and Baku," and "The Dismantling of the Soviet Onion Made Us Cry..."

Fleischmann & Tarwater
Morr Music Japan Tour EP [2005]
PS, GERMANY 2005 tour-only release, distributed in the U.S. for the first time, with Fleischmann providing two alternative versions of tracks and Tarwater providing three exclusive tracks. Anyone who has heard Fleischmann's The Humbucking Coil will already know "From To" and "Broken Monitors," but hearing them in these new-and-improved versions is a pleasure and a privilege -- the tracks are fleshed out with effects and distortion which makes them feel more fun and freer than their predecessors. Tarwater also don't disappoint, with their first offering "Cassedy" sounding like a 1950s slow dance as realized by the BBC Radiophonic workshop -- the EP's highlight and an incredible view of exactly what Morr Music is all about -- alternative and unusual pop music, pure and simple.

Flower Travelin' Band
Satori [re-issue]
PS, UK The Flower Travellin' Band's first musical outing, Challenge, was released in 1970 and was essentially a series of covers of Cream, Hendrix, Big Brother and Jefferson Airplane material. However, Satori appeared a year later and forever changed the way the group would be perceived, both in Japan and in the musical world at large. Possessing the vision to select Akira "Joe" Yamanaka as their vocalist, the Flower Travellin' boys elevated themselves above other Japanese bands of the time, whose efforts were largely confined to imitating British and American bands of the era. Satori, which was released in 1971, is a conceptual hard rock/psych album driven by Hideki Ishima's furious guitar licks which erupt and explode over the harmonic heart beat of the drums and bass and Yamanaka's banshee-like vocal style which was turning him into an occidental Iggy Pop or Robert Plant while the band itself was rapidly becoming Japan's answer to Led Zeppelin. Satori is a huge album in every way. From power chords to Eastern-tinged North African six-string freak-outs and crashing tom-toms, the band flexes its collective muscle from start to finish. In short, this is a real rock classic of the type they simply don't make any more.

Fuck Buttons
Street Horrrsing
PS, US The group was initially born as an outlet for their nihilistic-noise tendencies but quickly, they realized they could harness the use of noise as a tool to immerse & evoke. Tribal beats & subtle, beautiful melodies weave amongst contorting Technicolor drone-scapes while preaching distorted vocals scream for dear hope. This grand noise will fondle you into a state of totally immersed euphoria.

PITCHFORK: "Despite a stripped-down setup of just acoustic guitar and drums, this Bay Area duo hits with a full-band force that's even more pronounced in their astounding live sets. Visiter, their Frenchkiss Records debut, has garnered comparisons Animal Collective and new-primitivist bands like High Places and Yeasayer, but here, addictive hooks lurk beneath the rhymthic surface, resulting in one of the most welcoming (and welcome) records of 2008."

The Cheerful Insanity Of...
PS, UK This great album is where it all began for the King Crimson stalwarts. An excellent late 60's album which touches on psychedelic pop, (often compared to early Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd) with jazz influences and a whimsical brand of surreal humour. Fripps's guitar is on top form on Suite No. 1 and shows the shape of things to come when in 1969 when he and Mike Giles teamed up with Greg Lake and Ian McDonald to form King Crimson. His music is reminiscent of Bacharach and Brel, and he's created his own brand of playful pop while refining it with each release. He's toured with the likes of The Libertines, Badly Drawn Boy, Ben Kweller, and The Strokes. "A queasy mix of super-sharp realism, clammy surrealism, and elegant melody" - Mojo. "It always amazes me how he can express such deep meaning with such twisted humor. Adam is eccentric and down to earth, with newfound technical proficiency over a wider spectrum of styles. I love it" - Julian Casablancas, The Strokes.

Japancakes
Down The Elements
PS, US LAST COPIES OF THE VINYL! Eric Berg's heady instrumental visions maintain something of an unintentional defiance that suggests that the 21st century technology is still a far-off proposition. By focusing on cello strains, droning bass and guitar lines, and insistently groovy acoustic drum patterns, it appears that he and his other Athens, GA, cohorts don't recognize the cut-and-paste, sample-centric age that most rock is now generated in. This EP, which is sandwiched between two larger efforts of equally hypnotic textures, creates moods that are far more demanding of a listener's attention than much of the ambient music produced by the synthesists the world over. The wonderfully infectious riff that propels "A.W. Sonic" somehow manages to sustain its drawing power for the majority of the track's 11-minute lifespan. "Sputnik" and the title track are the disc's straight-ahead electronic fare, but they are so skillfully arranged it's as if they'd been secretly peering in the Orb's laboratory for years. As a lower cost introduction to what Berg has begun to achieve from an experimental rock concept gone right (unlike most), Down the Elements is immensely satisfying. -- ALL MUSIC GUIDE. Originally released as an EP by Kindercore in 2000, Down The Elements clocks in at 37:58 minutes, which makes it a full length in the real world. These recordings were made at the same time as those for If I Could See Dallas. Eclectic, mostly upbeat, instrumental explorations like Trans Am meets Tangerine Dream backed with beautiful blips and burbles sure to sooth.

Juniper Tar
To The Trees
PS, US Juniper Tar's debut release is the result of the band packing up and heading to Prentice in Northern Wisconsin in April 2007 to record the batch of songs they had been working on since the group's inception in 2005. The idea was to stay out of the recording studio environment and invite the room where the song is recorded to be the fifth band member. This allowed for the songs to be played live in one room where separation and instrument tracking would not become a separate process. The songs on To the Trees come together in a collage with a unifying theme of separation and solitude, sometimes longing for it while other times cursing it. Beginning this spring and summer, Juniper Tar will be supporting To the Trees with live shows throughout the Midwest and east coast.

A limited edition 7" vinyl single will also be released this spring on the Bus Stop Label for the song "The Mouths of Fields" with a B-side take on Townes Van Zandt's "Rex's Blues"

Keef Hartley Band
The Time Is Near...
PS, UK Considered by many to be one of the finest exponents of powerful Jazz Rock, Keef's earliest engagement was as replacement for Ringo Starr in Rory Storm and the Hurricanes. He was also Mick Fleetwood s replacement in John Mayalls Blues-Breakers and featured on many recordings by the band. In 1968 he formed his own group recruiting the highly regarded Miller Anderson on guitar and vocals. Although they performed at Woodstock the band was not filmed. Les Troubadours Du Roi Baudouin
Missa Luba
PS, UK Hailed by Stanley Kubrick as Absolutely, one of the great films, Lindsay Anderson s stylish, surrealistic, uncompromising and confrontational film IF... encapsulated the revolutionary atmosphere of the sixties; and four decades on has lost none of it's power to astonish and provoke. Malcolm McDowell (of whom IF... made a star), suggested the bewitching, other-worldly music of Sanctus from the Missa Luba, a version of the Latin Mass based on traditional Congolese songs, which establishes the film s very particular atmosphere. IF... captured the public's imagination beyond anyone's expectation and the memorable Sanctus subsequently became a chart hit (I couldn¹t believe it recalled McDowell). Les Troubadours du Roi Baudouin, a choir, with percussion section, consisting of about 45 boys from 9 to 14 years old, and 15 teachers were formed by Father Haazen. The Missa Luba is pure Congolese. It is completely void of any modern, western musical influences. None of it is written. Certain rhythms, harmonies and embellishments are spontaneous improvisations. This edition, comprising the mass and native songs of the Congo, is the first complete restoration of the original album first released in 1963.

Lucy Bland
Down To Sea Level
PS, US A little bit familiar and a lot unexpected, Lucy Bland's Down to Sea Level fuses the dynamic range of indie rock, the experimentation of electronica, and the story telling of folk into this genre-defining work. Expanding on the dreamy lushness of their "... really really really cool debut EP" (John Richards, KEXP), Down to Sea Level is the lo-fi indie anthem of your everyday. Introspective tracks like "Crashing Waves" are dominated by intricate arrangements, blip hop adventurousness, and bold instrumentation. The vocal-driven style is complimented by drops of melodic cello, delicate electronic ornamentation, and understated guitar chords, lending the song an aquatic, nostalgic air. Along with the imagery of open seas, Venetian streets, and collecting driftwood, Lucy Bland proves their adaptability with the sixth track of the album. Echoing the sound of Mirah and Blonde Redhead, "Valor" combines open, naked vocals and funky, disco bass beats into a quintessentially dark and moving opus. The song is epic without overstepping dramatic boundaries. Drawing from influences as varied as Cat Power and Hot Chip, Down to Sea Level is a versatile record that lacks only a distribution company. One listen and it won't be your last. Your eardrums will thank you. REVIEWS OF LUCY BLAND'S FIRST RECITAL: "It was so good I almost feel like speaking would be a disgrace." - Sean Nelson (Harvey Danger), KEXP Radio "... Music is rarely this pleasurable, meaningful, and soothing on tracks like 'Centuries' and the Suzanne Vega-ish 'Streaker'. A very charming debut EP." - www.threeimaginarygirls.com "Down tempo and moving, Lucy Bland is anything but bland. With the vocals of lead singer Cat Biell surrounded by some cello, guitar, and keyboard, the music just seems to flow so easily. It is perfect for that quiet evening or lazy afternoon." -South of Mainstream

Swaddling Songs
PS, UK Featuring girl singers Clodagh Simonds and Alison Williams, Mellow Candle never achieved commercial success they deserved spawning a legendary psychedelic folk-rock album akin to Fairport Convention or Fotheringay. Touring to support Thin Lizzy (Simonds played on Lizzy s album Shades of a Blue Orphanage ) and Horslips, the band had a short lived existence. Clodagh Simonds later went on to play again with Mike Oldfield and Jade Warrior and this release serves as evidence of the talents of both Simonds and the band who deserved far more commercial success than they attained. SALON.COM: "Combining rock 'n' roll's traditional fetish for pure, unmediated feeling, with a more modern sort of artistic calculation, Burma's music could evoke everything from the Beatles' ecstatic run of Hamburg rock clubs in the early 60s to the lightning-speed hardcore punk that was developing in the US during Burma's tenure. In this sense, Burma can be said to have blithely encapsulated punk's overarching mission: to draw a line connecting rock rebels past and present, and, in doing so, re-imagine and re-establish the music's anarchic condition."

Montys Loco
Farewell Mr. Happy
PS, SWEDEN With their last album, Man Overboard, still in regular rotation we welcome with open arms these Swedish electro-pop mavens' new recordings.

Powell, Baden & Vinicius De Moraes
Os Afro-Sambas / A Vontade
PS, UK Vinicius de Moraes was the principal lyricist of Bossa Nova, (Girl from Ipanema, Chega de Saudade and Insensatez are amongst the famous international hit songs he wrote with Tom Jobim), and Os Afro-Sambas is his response to the commercialization of the movement by the mid-sixties. Co-written with the brilliant Brazilian guitarist Baden Powell and eventually released in 1966, these eight songs combine Powell's melodic gifts with Bahian folk traditions and Gregorian chant. With the joyous vocalizations of Quarteto Em Cy, the atmosphere is at once haunting and spontaneous. The music hasn't even begun to date. Recorded at a time when musicians around the world were looking to break down barriers - between classical and pop, East and West - but the Afro-sambas appear to recognize no such barriers in the first place. Os Afro-Sambas is an absolute stunner. One of the most exquisite pieces of Brazilian music ever recorded, it is combined on this edition with the intimate, irresistible, A Vontade, Baden's most successful solo LP of the period and one of his finest achievements.

Second Band, The
The Definite Form (ON SALE)
PS, US Incredible new album. With a sound that has matured from adorable to drop-dead gorgeous in the space of time between releases The Second Band's new album, The Definite Form, is more epic, more anthemic and more assured than ever, an orchestral-pop gem that will be in my Top 10 for 2008. The Orebo, Sweden combo's soulful brass-driven euphoria is still evident, but this time out, older and wiser, it's tempered with a feeling of heartbreak and melancholy that is sweetly Swedish. Fans of The Beautiful South (arrangements), Headlights (sweetness), Bright Eyes (earnestness), Okkervil River (rustic charm) and Shout Out Louds (a manic melancholia) will find plenty to swoon to here.

She & Him
Volume 1
PS, US M. Ward and actress Zooey Deschanel met on a film they were both appearing in called The Go-Getter. The director wanted them to do a duet in the film of a Linda & Richard Thompson cover. This inspired them to then do a full on collaboration of which Volume One is the end product. There are a couple covers, Smokey Robinson and The Beatles, and the rest are all old-timey warm sounding originals. It has a very analog, at times girl-group sound to it so much so that the songs come off more as instant standards rather than typical indie classics. This album already has serious blog love from both the film & music communities, and the pair will more than likely do some high profile live dates around release

13 Blues For Thirteen Moons
PS, CANADA The band's first release in 3 years finds them louder and looser with crackling guitar crescendos, dive-bombing swirls of strings, rasps wails and group vocal passages that are posititively spine-tingling. On 13 Blues For Thirteen Moons, riffs are the backbone more than ever. Anchored by new drummer Eric Craven (ex-Hangedup), the band works its slow build and burn with newfound patience, sinuousness and ferocity. Whether methodically framing walls of sound over the four-on-the floor punk dirge of '1,000,000 Died To Make This Sound' or exploding in sheets of free noise and melody on 'Black Waters Blowed,' the band has never rocked harder and has never sounded more determined, desperate and driven.

Skyphone
Avellaneda (DELAYED)
PS, NORWAY This is the second full-length release by Danish trio Skyphone for the Rune Grammofon label. Having played in various rock outfits during most of the '90s, childhood friends Keld Dam Schmidt, Thomas Holst and Mads Bødker slowly moved towards the electronica scene and the German dub scene before starting Skyphone in 1999. Since then, they have steadily developed their own style, combining traditional rock instruments with electronics; scratching and carefully damaging the surface of the digital sounds, creating melodic pop songs without singing, leaving it to the listener to infer what the songs actually could have been and what is lurking virtually beneath the constrained, deliberately ambiguous surface of the song. With Avellaneda, they have further developed these ideas into a seamless blend of acoustic and electronic elements, rich in detail and sonic refinement, with the occasional touch of Scandinavian folk music providing a strong melodic base.

Stars In Coma sounds a bit like the sonic swirl of Felt, the off-kilter melody of The Pastels, the pure pop of fellow Swedes Celestial and also like... well, nothing else really. A one off! There are so many fine bands emerging from Sweden at the moment, but Stars In Coma are out there, occupying their own musical niche, creating their own sound. The first thing that hits you are the melodies, there's fragility and beauty to these songs. Stars In Coma present a C86 aspect to the finely crafted pop tunes, but that's not the limit of their musical style. Check the near glam rock swagger of "Radio", complete with the echo of hand claps, and the synth driven rhythms of "Transformation" as evidence of the musical versatility on show. Lyrically, there's a lot to be engage your ears too. From the pent up pop-rant at the apathetic masses on "People Put Up With a Lot Of Shit" to a lament on his own tortured indiepop genius on "Radio", André's words compliment the music perfectly. Listen too, to the explosively catchy melody of "Invisibility Trick" and the lovelorn melancholy of "I Wish Someone Would Dance With Me", and wipe away a tear or two. The story so far then, but more importantly, a sign of things to come! Fall in love with these pop gems before everyone else does. Gigs in England, Denmark and Italy as well as his homeland are signs of people catching on and of a brilliant future for Stars In Coma." --David Kendrick, Popklubb Fanzine.

Stevens, Meic
Gwymon [re-issue]
PS, UK When his classic Outlander LP failed to break through in 1970, Welsh singer-songwriter Meic Stevens' major label days were over. Gwymon ("Seaweed"), his legendary second LP, was recorded on his own terms in London in the summer of 1972, and highlights his pop sensibilities, with folk and blues influences also to the fore. It was only released in Wales in a tiny pressing, and has barely been heard since. Shortly after its recording, Meic moved to France, where he spent much of the rest of the decade in exile. The album makes its long-awaited CD debut here, complete with two bonus tracks, a detailed booklet featuring rare photos and an introduction from the man himself, making it an essential purchase for all fans of psychedelic singer-songwriting.

Stick Men
Insatiable
PS, US In the early '80s, The Stick Men ruled the Philadelphia new/no wave scene. Reminiscent of James Chance & the Contortions w/even more hyperkinetic energy (!!), they created a frenzied psycho-funk-punk sound that featured gut-wrenching timing, extraordinary charm, personality with a plus, & tons of good humor. In 1982, they released their debut LP "This Is The Master Brew". Their second release, "Get on Board The Stick Men", came out the following year after intensive U.S. touring. With stage manners as manic as their sound, the Stick Men magnetized & maintained a loyal fan base for their live shows. In the mid 80's the group disbanded. It would be an understatement to say that their experience had been intense. This CD contains their entire recorded output as well as rare tracks from live radio broadcasts. Also included is bonus CDRom material: a 20min Quick Time video of the band, playable on both PC & Mac computers taken from some of the only live video in existence reveals their explosive energy.

Bright Blue Dream
PS, US "Bright Blue Dream" is the first widely available LP from Bill Baird's new project, {{{Sunset}}}, following the break up of Sound Team. The record is a follow-up to his previous CDR and cassette albums, "{{{Sunset}}}," "Silence!," and "Pink Clouds", which were released independently through 2006 and 2007. All of the distinctive song styles from {{{Sunset}}}'s previous releases are represented here, yet are more finely tuned and expansive, brought together by a vividly colorful and meditative feel. Bill's craftsmanship and darkly humorous songwriting take an impressive leap forward with "Bright Blue Dream."

Teenagers, The
Reality Check
PS, US This French trio's sound is built around a backbone of golden pop melodies, enveloped in a sardonic wit and lingering Sofia Coppola soft focus. Although all the members are 20-somethings, adolescence is a concept that cuts to the group's core. They're in love with the idea of the dreamy teen, inspired by sunset walks through the park, clogging up shopping malls for no good reason, holding hands, and stolen kisses in the cinema. Similar to most filthy mouthed teens, "Reality Check" is full of foul innuendos and lyrics that would make Serge Gainsbourg blush. With its nonchalant and biting humor, this record is a 21st Century lo-fi French pop backdrop, awash in guitar hooks and soaring electro synth riffs.

Teknoist, The/Eustachian
Pillaged & Plundered
PS, GERMANY Unlike most Ad Noiseam acts, Eustachian are based in the US, where they tour a lot. This should go straight to the people who enjoyed Drumcorps and Bong-Ra's mix of metal and breakcore. Coming just in time for their tour throughout Europe, "Pillaged & Plundered" is a clear statement of what the crowds should expect. On the one side, The Teknoist throws in two new tracks of the excellent and tasty breed of breakcore, gabber and metal which has made of him one of Europe's most sought after producer of the genre. On their side, Eustachian opens wide the gates of Hell, mashing up grindcore, breakcore and noise with a brutality and ingenuity rarely seen so far. Watch out, these guys are after you sanity.

Domino

These New Puritans
Beat Pyramid
PS, US Domino's latest signing, These New Puritans, are a band of four 19 year-olds from Southend, UK. They have accomplished a lot in their brief existence including the release of a debut EP, extensive UK and European touring, and a collaboration with Dior designer Hedi Slimane which resulted in the epic "Navigate, Navigate" 12" single released in February. Beat Pyramid, their full-length debut, is the next phase in These New Puritans' hyperbolic progression. Recorded with Gareth Jones ¿ the producer of albums by Einsturzende Neubauten, Liars, and Wire ¿ its songs are an ever-mutating blur of brash chords, subtle details, and taut rhythms, borne of influences as disparate as early 80's industrial music to numerology, from This Heat to Dubsteb, and from J. Dilla to David Lynch. "This music is weightless," says Jack midway through "Swords Of Truth", perhaps the most striking track on the album. "This music's symbolic." In seven words, he manages to sum up his band better than anyone else could ¿ in typically oblique fashion, of course.

PS, US Reminiscent of the golden hits from the 1990s Touch and Go or Amphetamine Reptile catalogs, tweaked out on the exhilarating paranoia typical of America in the early aughts. Under Byen
Siamesisk EP
PS, US Live recordings, a collaboration between Danish art-rockers Under Byen and the renowned chamber orchestra Danish Radio Sinfonietta (a 42-piece classical orchestra). It swells with an icy sensuality, evoking the majestic Nordic glacial terrain and the gothic tales of Hans Christian Andersen. A carefully crafted audio expansion of Under Byen's distinctive theatricality. Pretty as a music box and grandiose as a full-scale symphony, Siamesisk successfully and intriguingly echoes the ancient ebb and flow of the sea against the Danish coast. The art-rock band Under Byen (Danish for 'under the city') broke the music world open with 2006's North American release of its album Samme Stof Som Stof. 5 tracks.

Phantom Guitars: A Cool Collection of Twangin' Guitar
PS, UK Instrumentals from the UK 1961-1964. For a short period in the UK, guitar-led instrumental groups took control. In the three year span between rock & roll and the full flush of beat, there was no bigger band than The Shadows. Their magical brand of twanging melody incorporated elements of Duane Eddy and The Ventures, but was something entirely British. And, as always, when someone comes up with a winning formula, everybody else suddenly leaps on board. So, in contrast to the clean-cut crooners, coffee bars, dancehalls and fairgrounds reverberated to the sound of Binson echo units and primitive Bigsby-esque tremelo arms. This CD ventures back in time a little further than previous Psychic Circle releases to round up a string-bending selection of some the finest examples of this genre.

Weber, Windy
I Hate People
PS, US Windy Weber, known for being half of the ambient drone duo WINDY & CARL, has recorded a solo album. It is quite different from what you may be thinking - it has none of the soothing characteristics you may be expecting & instead is full of heavy & brooding music. It's comprised of two tracks - Sirens, coming in at 24 minutes, is instrumental & is filled with the sound of guitars crying, rising & falling like waves crashing on the rocks. Sirens is ominous, and haunting. It is not music to sleep to, but instead could make you tense & anxious. The second track is Destroyed. It is 32 minutes long, and comprised of 3 suites. The first being layers of vocals, woven together to make a chorus of breathing & breathlessness, layers to make you feel as if you may be drowning in the sea...whether that sea be the ocean, or the sea of life, the day to day world in which you must deal. The second suite becomes noisy, agitated, rumbling & distorted guitars, bass & feedback, and makes you sit on the edge of your seat wondering what is about to happen. The third suite takes you to the end of the album with subsonic frequencies & strange unrecognizable sounds. This is not music for the faint of heart.

Wild Swans
Bringing Home the Ashes [re-issue]
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Songs about war and religious faith were not exclusive to U2 in the '80s. Liverpool, England's the Wild Swans ventured into U2 territory on their 1988 debut album, Bringing Home the Ashes, while sustaining their distinctive sound. The haunting voice of Paul Simpson injects every track with emotional weight; whether he is trying to convey joy or sorrow, his icy baritone chills to the bone. His vocals combine Scott Walker's lonely croon with the brooding angst of Ian McNabb from fellow Liverpudlians the Icicle Works... As enthralling as U2 were in the '80s, they never sounded as gorgeous as the Wild Swans do on Bringing Home the Ashes... Simpson's sparkling voice and Kelly's ethereal guitars provide the album with an undeniably romantic feel. Every track is suffused with radiant pop hooks."

Wild Swans, The
Space Flower [re-issue]
PS, US The Wild Swans' follows XTC (masquerading as the Dukes of Stratosphear) and the Damned into the more pop-oriented side of the '60s: the sort of area that could produce a three-minute single and a ten-minute hallucinogenic mind-blower. Pink Floyd got to be quite masterful at this aspect of things with Syd Barrett; the Moody Blues, too, used to be able to do this to a degree. Typically, the Wild Swans, with a somewhat softer sound than they've had previously, have followed in this rather English area, twenty-some years down the line. What you get for your money is a rather catchy collection of hook-driven numbers...not to mention the royally absorbing "Sea of Tranquility," a track that ticks along on a rolling bassline, dispenses with vocals along the way, and proceeds to play sonic games that suck you in and make you wish it could have gone on lots longer than ten minutes. One of the factors in the Swans' favor is certainly an endearing simplicity. Where their songs have often been complex sonic tapestries, Space Flower shucks off the complexities in favor of a very '60s production... It's great fun, very catchy, and probably great for parties."

This follow-up to their 2006 self-titled debut remains true to the classic heavy rock sound of the first, but has evolved as the band has learned to play to each other's strengths. Anderson, Jason
The Hopeful and the Unafraid (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 8TH)
PS, US This album takes a stab at capturing some of the energy JASON ANDERSON loves putting into every show he plays, whether there are five or fifty people present. For the most part it succeeds, but to say that these are the "definitive" or "final" or "best" versions of these songs would be unrealistic, it would be straight-up false, actually. Jason says he's come to grips with the fact that it can never be just the way he wants in the studio; that the passionate, in-the-moment rush of doing these tunes in a basement full of singing, sweating friends is where his affection really lies. This is a bittersweet notion, but maybe explains why someone would spend half a decade on the road, trying to connect with people anywhere and everywhere, wanting to make them happy, to make them feel alive.

Arc Lab
The Goodbye Radio (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 22ND)
PS, US Medard Fischer returns with his rather cryptically-titled third album, "The Goodbye Radio". Representing a large step forward for Fischer's Arc Lab project, the album is structured as a musical reinterpretation of the sonnet form in which field recordings, organic instrumentation, radio noise, candid male vocals and snippets of old public domain recordings meet with the FM synthesis, female vocals and signature beatwork that made previous Arc Lab efforts so special. Thematic reference points include the Russian space program, relativity, female serial killers, and being separated from a soulmate. This diverse collection of influences gives the album a more personal feel than previous efforts as there are now human stories attached to Fischer's Arc Lab scheme. Genre specific sign-posts or "this-meets-that" descriptors are really of little use in describing "The Goodbye Radio" as Fischer has now taken Arc Lab to places where the synthetic only aid him in the preservation of great music and ideas. But, as the title may allude to, this may be Fischer's final offering. Let's hope not. An artist capable of such alchemy would be a significant loss for all of us. Let's hope the Arc Lab radio stays on and at its full volume.

Autumns, The
Fake Noise from a Box of Toys (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 15TH)
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Previous albums like In the Russet Gold of This Vain Hour were full of shimmering, slowly unfolding dream pop soundscapes directly influenced by the likes of My Bloody Valentine and the Cocteau Twins, whose Simon Raymonde signed the Los Angeles band to his Bella Union label some time back. There are intermittent flashes of that sound on Fake Noise from a Box of Toys (notably on "The Midnight Knock" and "The Beautiful Boot"), but this is a far more immediate album overall. Points of comparison this time aren't the wall-of-effects-pedals wash that Robin Guthrie or Kevin Shields specialized in, but the self-consciously epic likes of Simple Minds, U2, Radiohead, or even Coldplay: singer Matthew Kelly tends to favor the highest end of his range à la Chris Martin or Thom Yorke. Anthemic singalong choruses, catchy guitar riffs, and layered harmonies -- things the Autumns never had much truck with on their earlier albums -- are the focus of songs like "Boys," "Glass Jaw," and "Clem," any of which could conceivably be mainstream alt-rock radio hits. That may sound like the Autumns have abandoned themselves to the wider pop marketplace, but what's most impressive about Fake Noise from a Box of Toys is that the group maintains enough of their own musical personality on songs like the swirling closer "Oh My Heart" and the dramatic high point "Killer in Drag" that the more accessible songs sound like evolution, not sellout."

Borko
Celebrating Life (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 1ST)
PS, GERMANY Celebrating Life is the first full-length release from Icelandic artist Björn Kristiansson and reflects a life in music full of experiences. The oldest of these eight tracks are up to six years old, and Morr label-head Thomas Morr has been their eager and attentive listener. How does a punch in the belly sound? Kristiansson has written a song about it called "Spoonstabber," where you'll hear an elegiac Tetris, encapsulated by delaying beats, tumbling samples, guitars, trumpets and a melody that goes on for an eternity. Borko - who also works as a musician for film and theater as well as a music teacher at a primary school in Reykjavik - expresses melancholy and nostalgia through rhythm-machines. His songs can reach dramatic heights with climbing melodies, as well as play up the stoicism of repetition and modulation. His work at the laptop and mixing desk live on stage have helped fuel his inspiration as well as childhood prog rock LPs, Jim O'Rourke's ear and electronica's warmth.

Bronze
Calypso Shakedown (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 15TH)
PS, US Not the Bus Stop Label's pop-obsessed artist, but a Chicago 18-piece boasting avant-rock pedigress harnessing their collective powers for this breezy soul-funk de force. Although Calypso Shakedown is in some respects a throwback to a lost era - an era characterized by saccharine enforcement of smooth passion - one is impressed more deeply on each listen by an irresistibly genuine quality, unmistakably contemporary. Think Elliott Smith meets Lionel Richie, it's a little bit like peanut butter and bananas. Now pour on some honey. There is uncommon depth within these songs. Say whatever else you will about it, but unfettered by convention and without affectation, there is no denying Calypso Shakedown has loads of soul. Trombones flirt with flutes atop the warm sonic glow of a Fender Rhodes, guitars mingle with vibraphone and violin and cello soar over elaborate vocals. Throughout, an uncommonly adept rhythm section (think rhythm and blues) forms the backbone that speaks volumes and could move mountains.

Featured musicians included Andrew Bilham, Ronald Reah, Andrew Renshaw, Nigel Shipway, Dave Smith, John White and Marie Wilson, as well as Gavin Bryars himself on piano and vibraphone. The album is the only one that documents the important period between Bryars' early experimental music and later works from Medea onwards, as well as his enthusiasm for small composer/performer ensembles. The new 63 minute digital remaster of Hommages now includes two bonus tracks composed and recorded by Bryars during the same period: Danse Dieppoise, and the lengthy piano piece Out of Zaleski's Gazebo. The booklet features extensive notes by Gavin Bryars on the origin and performance of all six pieces, and preserves the original album cover artwork by Marc Borgers.

Chandeliers
The Thrush (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 15TH)
PS, UK Chandeliers are a Chicago_based quartet that represents a phenomenon of unclassifiable modern music. Comprised of multi-instrumentalists from Chicago's blossoming young avant-rock scene, they have created a unique, and live, electronic sound. Adopting the collective spirit of krautrock bands like Can and Faust, the Chandeliers function as a unified whole, with no dominant members. This approach gives the band a more intuitive and unpredictable approach to composing. the sessions for The Thrush were overseen by Bablicon's Diminisher and Blue Hawaii at the Shape Shoppe and at Mahjongg's west-side studio in Chicago. Its nine songs feature guests musicians from Bablicon, Icy Demons, and Mahjongg and includes 3 videos by filmmaker TJ Hellmuth. Believing that colour can exist in harmony with timbre, the Chandeliers pride themselves on their synaesthetic live performances: a non-stop high-energy show, augmented with dual projections of Brakhage-esqe visual rhythm. Chandeliers bring the energy of a super-live party to their cerebral synth interplay. An obvious reference is Kraftwerk, but with influences ranging from Burmese and Arabic melody, to the sonically dirty rhythmic propulsion of Konono no.1, and the crunked-out psychedelic hip-hop of J-Dilla, Chandeliers always keep the listener on their toes. An album with the flow of a mix-tape, the Thrush is at home bangin' in your trunk or hypnotizing on your headphones.

They present the seemingly disparate dualities of metaphysical improvisation & meticulous composition in their otherworldly collaboration, an adventurous take on songwriting unheard since the heyday of Cherry Red & 4AD (imagine Eyeless in Gaza or Durutti Column nicking from the Richard Youngs songbook). Presenting music bathed in the beauty of everyday things, The Child Readers offer sonic prayers to country, wastes of sea, songs, drawings, particular times of day & different furs.

Cud
Leggy Mambo (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 13TH)
PS, UK Following the release of their debut When In Rome, Kill Me and 1990 s Elvis Belt compilation (CDMRED355), Leeds indie heroes CUD set to work on their next album for Imaginary Records. Recorded during the Summer of 1990, Leggy Mambo proved to be a step in all the right directions, cementing the sound developed over their previous releases and capitalizing on the band s pop sensibilities to provide their most immediately accessible collection of songs to date. Produced by XTCs Dave Gregory and released in October 1990, the album spawned the well-received singles Robinson Crusoe and Magic (both of which might have achieved greater success had they been released on a larger label) and generated a huge amount of industry interest, eventually leading to their signing with A & M the following year. This Cherry Red Gold top Copy version of the album features the newly remastered original disc, as well as a collection of demos and alternate versions, all of which have been hand picked by the band themselves. This release (along with two more Cherry Red CUD Reissues) comes hot on the tails of 2006 s Rich and Strange The Anthology compilation and 2007's well received reissues of two more of the band's albums, all of which reminded the world just how great this band were and generated a well deserved resurgence in interest. A UK tour is scheduled for March to promote this and it's accompanying releases. TRACKS: 1. NOW! 2. HEART 3. HEY, BOOTS 4. LOVE IN A HOLLOW TREE 5. LOVE MANDARIN 6. NOT EXACTLY D.L.E.R.C. 7. Cud
Elvis Belt (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 13TH)
PS, UK Formed in Leeds in 1986, CUD went on to forge one of the more interesting and indefinable sounds of the late 80s / early 90s indie scene. Fusing a catchy pop sensibility with danceable grooves and intelligent and often humorous lyrics, they soon became firm independent favorites and began releasing records on Leeds based Reception Records in 1987, very quickly catching the ear of John Peel and becoming a regular fixture of his broadcasts. Three quality singles into their career, the band secured a deal with Imaginary Records, where they continued a fine run of singles and eventually released their debut album. Capitalizing on the band's underground success, in June 1990 Imaginary followed this with this fantastic compilation of their early releases, topping several independent charts in the process and further establishing an already strong reputation. Some eighteen years later, Elvis Belt is updated and reissued here by Cherry Red, together with a wealth of rarities and unreleased tracks from those formative years and beyond. This release features the original album in its entirety, carefully remastered and now sitting comfortably alongside Elvis Handbag, an additional disc conceived by the band as a sister album to the original release and containing a number of further B-Sides, Peel Session recordings and cover versions (including the band's legendary take on Bohemian Rhapsody, previously only available on the ultra-rare Alvin Lives in Leeds compilation). This release (along with two more Cherry Red CUD Reissues) comes hot on the tails of 2006's Rich and Strange The Anthology compilation and 2007s well received re-issues of two more of the band's albums, all of which reminded the world just how great this band were and generated a well deserved resurgence in interest. Cud
Showbiz (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 13TH)
PS, UK Having departed the independent world and signed with A&M in 1991, CUD proceeded to pursue the commercial success their previous releases had hinted at with 1992's Asquarius. Following this, their first hit album, proved to be the band s longest break between releases (largely the result of some inter-label disharmony), but they eventually emerged in 1994 with Showbiz. Recorded primarily in Scotland (at a studio owned by Fish of Marillion fame, no less), this record saw their sound mature and showcased a broader range of songwriting styles than previous efforts. It was well received on its release in April 1994, garnering favorable reviews, and spawned two UK hit singles in Neurotica and One Giant Love. Sadly, though, the album proved to be the band's last officially released effort as the pressures of life on a major and all that it entails took their toll on the band. This remastered version also includes a number of B-Sides from the album's single releases, as well as some unreleased out-takes and demo versions, including material intended for their next album, which hasn't seen the light of day before now. This release (along with two more Cherry Red CUD Reissues) comes hot on the tails of 2006's Rich and Strange The Anthology compilation and 2007's well received re-issues of two more of the band's albums, all of which reminded the world just how great this band were. PS, US Dead Child have birthed a truly supreme metal masterwork. "Attack" grew out of pure frustration - the band was sick of the vulnerable, pompous music of recent years, instead jonesing for the pure and simple chops-oriented music of their formative days. PS, US In the nearly three-year gap between their debut album, "Noumena", and this follow-up, THE DRIFT have toured extensively throughout North America and Japan. All that tripping did wonders for their songwriting process, inspiring efficiency with their structures while maintaining the intoxicating song lengths they are known for. Though the music on "Memory Drawings" is familiar, there is a depth to both the performance and production that feels new all over again. Recorded directly to analog tape with longtime producer Jay Pellicci at Tiny Telephones in San Francisco, the mix is used as another instrument to help shape each song, channeling the mythos of late 60s jazz and late 70s dub classics. As The Drift have narrowed their focus, they have expanded their influences. Nowhere is this more obvious than "Uncanny Valley," with its shades of Afro-beat and disco-soul; or the dramatic, deserted ballad "Lands End." With "Memory Drawings", they have truly found their groove - and the deeper they dig, the more curious we become.

Electric Pop Group
Sunrise EP (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 1ST)
PS, US Brilliant Matinée debut from popular Swedish band The Electric Pop Group. The quartet astonished everyone late in 2006 with a self-released debut album that came out of nowhere to make numerous year-end lists and earn countless favorable reviews including comparisons to legendary bands on Creation Records (Razorcuts, Primal Scream, The Pastels, Jesus and Mary Chain) and Sarah Records (The Sea Urchins, Another Sunny Day, Brighter, and The Field Mice). As one of many indie record labels that took notice, Matinée made contact with them just as they started work on new recordings last summer and this EP is the first fruit of those sessions. Especially notable given the band's name, this EP also marks the addition of acoustic guitars to their repertoire. The EP kicks off with 'I Could See The Lights', an incredible tune and one of the first new songs the band recorded following the success of its debut album. Guitars jangle, drums pound, keyboards chime...the song simply shimmers and will serve as a perfect summertime anthem even in the face of less agreeable weather. It demanded to be released as a single so here it is! In addition to the lead track, the EP features three glorious additional songs: 'This Is The Town' is another chiming A-side, an infectious song that features prominent keyboards as the perfect counterpoint to three glistening guitar parts. 'Summer's Day' is a showcase for the newly added acoustic guitar, a fragile song that is similar to and every bit as poignant as the classic track 'For Always' by Razorcuts. Finally, 'Come And See Me' employs keyboards to great effect, creating a mesmerizing and soaring hit that is an especially lovely way to end the EP for sure. On this release, the band takes its sound-described by one esteemed music writer as "both studiously retrospective and thoroughly contemporary"-and expands it with added instrumentation and superb songwriting. The result is a modern indiepop classic and another sparkling addition to the Matinée discography.

Exciters, Thee
Spending Cash, Talking Trash (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 15TH)
PS, UK When their "Dial 'E' for Excitement" (Dirty Water) was released, NME said: conforming to the rule that any band who spell "The" with two "e"s will always be beer-soaked garage rockers, the second single from Thee Exciters comprises four songs, each more beer-soaked and garage-rockin' than the last. Fittingly for a band whose singer has a reputation for on-stage nudity, the likes of "Ugly Face" and "Things Ain't Right" are the kind of songs that in the unlikely event that they woke up one morning as dogs would be muzzled, or at the very least made to wear one of those funny plastic cones around their heads to stop them chewing their own balls. An oblique recommendation, yes, but we're standing by it. Mojo magazine, meanwhile, declared that: ...this band's four tracker is shot through with a raging garage scuzz that is only properly realised on black plastic. Songs tell of being driven wild by young women, wanting to start a riot and, on "Ugly Face", a lousy attitude. When vocalist Paul Le-Brock howls "I hate your ugly face" you know the band mines the Nuggets motherlode. If this is your kind of thing, a deep sense of well-being awaits. This is a groovy, hip-shaking bastardization of the first Them album that's been copulating with the energy of The Shadows of Knights. "Things Ain't Right" is the Count Five reborn - psychotic reaction indeed! But they're not completely lost in the art of retrofication since they infuse a whole lotta punk attitude in their tunes. Yes! It's righteous, strip-me-naked- and-paint-me FUZZ RAWK! Forget the Arctic Monkeys or whoever is flavor of the month this month - dial "E" for Exciters if you want your rock'n'roll party to kick some booty, baby! This album includes both their soldout EPs and eight brand new tracks - plus a complete live set recorded at the Dirty Water Club as an added extra on the CD version - with fab cover art by renowned Danish artist Niels Ejnar Rust.

Explorers Club, The
Do You Love Me? / Carry Me (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 8TH)
PS, US In the age of the MP3, flavors of the "month" circulate far faster than Baskin Robbins can rotate their cooler. It is refreshing, then, to hear something timeless every now and again, and the EXPLORERS CLUB is just that. This is sunny psychedelic pop replete with lush arrangements and cushy four-part harmonies that harken back to a decade long ago, when kids turned on their FM radios to find the cool new thing. These boys are not indie-rockers thieving from the vaults of the classics - the Explorers Club writes pop songs that sound as authentic as if they had actually just been unearthed for a new Nuggets collection or Sundazed reissue. The band draws on the soul-satisfying vocal style made famous by the Beach Boys and the Association, and pairs it with arrangements patented by the likes of Phil Spector, the Left Banke and the Zombies. And like their musical heroes, the Explorers Club understands the meaning of a great single. With that in mind, we are pleased to share "Do You Love Me" - the first jewel from their forthcoming album, "Freedom Wind". "Do You Love Me" dabbles in Brian Wilson-esque majestic pop, while the exclusive B-side, "Carry Me" has flourishes of doo-wop and soul amidst its choral pop.

For Against
Shade Side Sunny Side (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 8TH)
PS, US Signposts: Factory Records, Joy Division, Section 25, Interpol, My Bloody Valentine. WORDS ON MUSIC is proud to release "Shade Side Sunny Side," FOR AGAINST's seventh full-length record and first studio album since 2002. As the Lincoln, Nebraska trio approaches their 25th anniversary on the independent music scene, FOR AGAINST has reemerged with an exclamation point: "Shade Side Sunny Side" is a landmark record for the band, boasting FOR AGAINST's darkest (and loudest) material to date. The post-punk roots of FOR AGAINST's early years are firmly in place, but presented throughout 9 new songs with a more expansive and atmospheric sonic palette. "Shade Side Sunny Side" also marks the notable return of original FOR AGAINST guitarist Harry Dingman III, who formed the band with vocalist and bassist Jeffrey Runnings back in 1984. Dingman left FOR AGAINST after 1988's seminal dream pop record, "December." For the new album, the prolific Runnings-Dingman songwriting team picks up right where they left off 20 years ago, when they wrote the classic post-punk material that comprised "Echelons," "December," and "In The Marshes" all within a 2- year span. "Glamour," the album's opening track, is a fierce proposition that tours the early FACTORY RECORDS sound before segueing into a cold post-punk stomp coated by Runnings' icy vocals. Songs like "Underestimate" and the album closer "Irresistible" sparkle with a pop grandeur hinted at by 2002's "Coalesced" album, but infused with unmistakable guitarwork revealing the fingerprints of Dingman's return: searing feedback, atmospheric chord-play, and inspired hooks are coaxed together to form a musical backbone that is both furious and gorgeous. "Aftertaste" is a blistering song that melds the musical sensibilities of JOY DIVISION's early WARSAW years with production by MARC OSTERMEIER (SHOULD) hinting at WIRE's "154." "Shade Side Sunny Side" also includes a cover version of "Friendly Fires," written by Factory Records' SECTION 25, from their 1981 debut "Always Now." "Shade Side Sunny Side" also includes some of the most heartrending accounts by Runnings to date. The album reveals itself as a confessional and therapeutic musical diary, with several songs recounting the tragic life and loss of a close family member, from the acerbic "Glamour," to the haunting ballad "Why Are You So Angry?," and culminating in "Game Over," where Runnings is at his most defenseless, singing nakedly on piano through the first verse and chorus. FOR AGAINST's musicianship on "Shade Side Sunny Side" is in top form, reflecting a maturity befitting their quarter century of songwriting and performances and a freshness that has drawn together an interesting union of dream pop enthusiasts in the USA and a strong dark wave following in Europe.

Hitchcock, Robyn
Shadow Cat (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 1ST)
PS, UK Robyn Hitchcock has taken time out from working with The Venus 3 (which features various members of REM) and John Paul Jones (who has been busy with his former band Led Zeppelin lately...) to compile an exclusive album, Shadow Cat, for London's premier oddball label Sartorial Records. This collection of previously unreleased material from the Hitchcock vaults dates from 1993-99, providing the missing link between The Egyptians on A&M and the Warner Bros years. Shadow Cat itself features Moris Tepper, mainstay of Captain Beefheart's Magic Band, on lead acoustic guitar, and all tracks are Hitchcock originals, but for the Hendrix cover "The Wind Cries Mary" (on which Sartorial boss Terry Edwards plays Hammond organ). Aside from Edwards making a further appearance on "Never Have To See You Again", Robyn performs all instruments & vocals. From the concise opening cut, For Debbie Reynolds, to the concluding title track, the quality of the songwriting & performance shines through - "out-take" albums are all too often cobbled together from unreleased (unrealizable!) material. Not so here. These 14 tracks were whittled down from around 30 contenders, carefully edited & remastered to create a cohesive album - even to the point of sequencing the songs as two sides, despite it not being manufactured on vinyl. Essential for those who have followed Robyn from his early days in The Soft Boys (with Kimberley Rew, Morris Windsor and Andy Metcalfe) to his work with film director Jonathan Demme and beyond, this release also serves as a fine introduction to the work of one of Englands most treasured songwriters. Enjoy! Track listing SIDE 1: 1 For Debbie Reynolds, 2 Never Have To See You Again, 3 Love Affair, 4 The Wind Cries Mary, 5 High On Yourself, 6 Because You're Over, 7 The Cat Walks Her Kind Of Line. SIDE 2: 8 Statue With A Walkman, 9 The Green Boy, 10 Real Dot, 11 Nothing But Time, 12 Beautiful Shock, 13 Baby-Doll, 14 Shadow Cat.

Hornet Leg
Blood Trilogy (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 8TH)
PS, US HORNET LEG, the new Northwest fuzz harbingers in tune with the "heavy", identify the primal symbolisms of blood as fear, death and paradoxically, life. The "Blood Trilogy", condenses the full length concept album into three potent tracks of pure unsentimental, raw energy. Expertly engineered by CALVIN JOHNSON at the Dub Narcotic Studios, these recordings are an immediate grab to the throat but leave a haunting grip to the ears. Chapter 1: "Bleed The Blood", a groovy mid tempo churn, represents the immediate loss of spirit that occurs when love is lost and never regained. To bleed the spirit is to bleed the blood and thus the spirit is bled. Chapter 2: "Covered In Blood", has the pounding scream and scrape when one is exposed to the blunt force of brutality. Anger and fear become intertwined and fused into the "bad" parts of the subconscious and the ensuing detriment can make vibrations that sound very similar to the distorted electric guitar. Chapter 3: "Bloody Hands", is a requiem for the (un)dearly departed sung in the style of a ghostly lullaby. A melodic question is posed - Is consciousness tethered to the physicality of blood? The arterial guitar and voice of Chris Sutton (Dub Narcotic, C.O.C.O) is the jugular vein carrying the sound of this group's unique garage punk. The heart pumping rhythm is the bash and thrash of one Claudia Meza (Japanther, Thunder Thunder Thunder). Joel Brazzel (K Records darling), a full-fledged ghost member, contributes shaker and tambourine work in the session that produces just the right amount of evil.

Judys, The
Moo [re-issue] (DELAYED, PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MARCH 2008)
PS, US The original 'Moo' album finally re-issued on CD for the first time! CD sports seven bonus tracks, mainman David Bean's "Modomusic" EP. Released almost four years to the day after Washarama and following an eighteen month hiatus, The Judy's Moo album has a slightly more progressive sound: richer production values, fuller arrangements and thicker harmonies. As the band returned to the stage in 1985, this was the album that showed the band's maturity and development as songwriters and musicians. The twelve songs on Moo, laced with solid-state irony, well-placed cynicism and standard issue Judys' wit, show the band at the peak of their creativity and acted as a springboard for their live extravaganzas. The album was released with The Moo Tour - a month of live performances across the state which included giant cereal boxes, moving conveyer belts of milk cartons, and a dancing cow while the band donned milkman uniforms. Critically acclaimed and fan-revered, The Moo Album continues to be a milestone in Texas pop music.

Judys, The
Land Of Plenty [re-issue] (DELAYED, PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MARCH 2008)
PS, US First ever official release for The Judys last album, recorded but never released! In 1990, The Judy's set out to record a new album with a new Judy's sound. Featuring the lineup that had been established over a number of years the band, including Barbara Donaho (keyboards/guitars), Lee Malone (bass), and Darwin Keys (drums), set out to explore new horizons musically and thematically. Land of Plenty injected multi-layered keyboards and guitars, stacked vocals, a gospel choir, and even a bit of banjo into the band's palatte and sought to realize Bean's vision of a new Americana musical landscape. Broad in its scope and daring in its expansion of the band's definition of itself, Land of Plenty was shelved when the group disbanded before the CD's release. While a handful of copies have been given out, this is first time this long sought-after project has been available to the general public.

July
July (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 2ND)
PS, UK Having started out as a skiffle act from Ealing and called The Playboys they then became an R&B combo, The Tomcats. John (Speedy) Keen, (Thunderclap Newman) was in them for a while and then In 1966, The Tomcats went to Spain with a new line-up (one which become the future July one). As Los Tomcats, they got in the charts with four EPs, one of which was all in Spanish! They then returned to the UK in 1968, still basing themselves in Ealing and changed their name to July. As July, they recorded what later became one of the most sought-after British psychedelic sixties albums of all time. One that was originally released in the UK on Major Minor (MMLP/SMLP 29) in 1968 and also issued in USA/Canada on Epic (BN- 26416) and even released in Brazil (Musidisc Hi Fi 2.177). The album s main appeal is its haunting brand of psychedelia and Rev-Ola are delighted to announce that this special CD issue has four bonus tracks. The gorgeous package is also enhanced by a quantity of previously unpublished photographs and some highly-informative CD booklet notes by 60s pop-sike expert David Wells. The Outside (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 8TH)
PS, US ELIOT LIPP continues his impressive retooling of analog infused electro-funk with his latest full-length, "The Outside", his first for MUSH RECORDS. Techno and hip-hop in their earliest, formative stages have inspired Eliot throughout his career, and form the common thread running through the album. Slick analogue synth work and tight drum programming abound, as Eliot deconstructs his influences to create something that is both recognizable and completely futuristic. For listeners who remember a time when electronic music had a little dirt under its fingernails, "The Outside" will truly capture your imagination.

With a following that sells out clubs coast to coast and with a kinetic stage presence, Man Man are a musical contagion waiting to happen. They've toured with Cat Power, Arcade Fire, and Modest Mouse.

Millimetrik
Northwest Passage's New Era (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 2ND)
PS, UK Pascal Asselin is a founder member of French Canadian dreampop outfit Below the Sea and half of Anglo-Canadian duo Glider. Pascal began recording under the name Millimetrik in 2003, uniting his love of atmospheric ambient (Biosphere, Murcof) with hip-hop rhythms and breaks. With his background as a drummer, Millimetrik's earlier albums "Variety is the Spice of Life" and "Deeper Transmissions" and "The Last Polar Bear on Earth" (all Statik Rek) featured intricately programmed beats with the music creating an otherworldly and often unsettling and chilly backdrop. Over the course of recent releases, such as "Cities EP" and "I Am You Are Me; Remixes and Unreleased" (both Make Mine Music), the atmospheres have slowly thawed and melody has come increasingly to the fore. On the new album "Northwest Passage's New Era", Pascal has ventured even further down this path and the music has a sense of emerging from darkness into the light. The intricately programmed beats are still present, but the emphasis is firmly on melody and structure, and the sound is rooted in hip-hop rather than ambient music. Featuring guest appearances by Ulrich Schnauss and Port-Royal amongst others, the album also sees the first vocals on a Millimetrik release courtesy of Sean Heenan of Auburn Lull and Marie Jorge, whose beautiful vocals grace the album's final track. With this new album, Millimetrik has exceeded the already very high standards of previous releases. "Northwest Passage's
New Era" is a consistently enjoyable, engaging and varied listen that Make Mine Music is proud to release.

Monochrome Set
The Independent Singles Collection (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 13TH)
PS, UK Suave; debonair; sophisticated. Haughty, perhaps, for those who favor the pejorative. Aristocratic in more than one sense, classy in at least as many. The Monochrome Set were effortlessly inventive, literate, poised and immaculate of tuneage, possessed of an internal dialogue as a band that allowed them to surf their own narrative. They were just unlike anything else, in layman s terms. Instead, their sound harked back to a golden era of British pop songwriters. But there was nothing retrogressive about their endeavors. Instead they wrote songs that recreated the drama and promise of a Pearl & Dean interval theme, veering from lullaby to mambo to harmonic pop, accompanied by lush melodies and irresistibly playful lyrics that embraced morbidity at one extreme, and pitch-perfect satire at another. Because they could. Brand new release of Monochrome Set's complete independent singles collection including b-sides and rare tracks Norman Cook aka Fatboy Slim, a long-term fan of the band, has recorded a cover of He's Frank with guest vocals by Iggy Pop and indeed this version has already been broadcast in Heroes. And the word is that this track may even be his next single. TRACKS: 1. HE S FRANK 2. ALPHAVILLE 3. EINE SYMPHONIE DES GRAUENS 4. LESTER LEAPS IN 5. THE MONOCHROME SET 6. MR BIZZARO 7. Motorpsycho
Little Lucid Moments (ON SALE / PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 15TH)
PS, NORWAY Motorpsycho was founded in 1989 in Trondheim, Norway's third biggest city, when mainstays Bent Sæther (bass, vocals) and Hans Magnus "Snah" Ryan (guitar, vocals) were joined by drummer Kjell Runar "Killer" Jenssen. The first album, Lobotomizer, was released in 1991 after which Killer quit and Håkon Gebhardt took over the drums for many years to come. Gebhardt left in 2005 before the recording of Black Hole/Blank Canvas where Bent and Snah did most of the drumming themselves. With Little Lucid Moments they have a new, permanent drummer. Kenneth Kapstad is also a member of Animal Apha and Monolitich and has played with Dadafon, Gåte, Cucumber and Soundtank. Helge Sten, aka Deathprod, is back as a co-producer of Lucid Little Moments, and Kim Hiorthøy also returns to design the album sleeve. With 1993's Demon Box, Motorpsycho were already laying down the blueprint for much of the stoner psychedelia that would spawn a number of bands many years later. Since then, and several albums later, they have developed their personal style to sometimes include delicate use of brass, strings and other instrumentation, even flirting with pop structures and shorter songs, but never abandoning the original spirit of Motorpsycho and the long classic epics like "Demon Box," "The Wheel," "The Golden Core," "Un Chien D'Espace," "Vortex Surfer" and "Radiator Freak." With four long, energetic and evolving tracks ranging from 11 to 21 minutes, Little Lucid Moments is in every way what many hardcore fans will consider to be classic Motorpsycho in full flight. The album was recorded by Helge Sten and mixed by Jørgen Træen (Jaga Jazzist, Sondre Lerche). Mastered by U.S. mastering guru, Bob Katz.

Mt. Wilson Repeater
S-T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 15th)
PS, US After ten-plus years fronting Los Angeles' favorite sons, the RADAR BROS., Jim Putnam now brings his acclaimed talent for composition, melody and command of the studio to his new project Mt. Wilson Repeater. Recorded in his renowned backyard studio in Atwater Village, CA, Mt. Wilson Repeater is the sound of late nights at the piano, bourbon in hand, after a day spent watching his dog Hal eat freshly fallen grapefruit from the adjacent tree. Playing multiple instruments on the album and utilizing many of the techniques learned from his father, Bill Putnam, Jim delivers masterful recordings of his trademark aesthetic. This self-titled debut expresses that warm southern California sun worshipped by Putnam, the Radar Bros. and their fans yet the similarities between Mt. Wilson Repeater and the Radar Bros. suddenly come to an abrupt end. Vocals take a backseat to music on this album-if they get in the car at all-serving more as an integral part of the sound and instrumentation rather than as a point of focus. Jim creates lush, psychedelic arrangements swimming within an intimate bedroom ambience - a seamless welding of electronic and acoustic worlds. The experiment that is Mt. Wilson Repeater sits comfortably in the backyard along with tradition, sharing drinks until tradition passes out, allowing him to sneak back into the studio.

Northern Portrait
The Fallen Aristocracy EP (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 1ST)
PS, US Magnificent debut release from new Danish trio Northern Portrait who are ready to take the world by storm with one of the strongest singles released by Matinée to date! The release has all the makings of a modern pop classic and, according to somebody in the know, will "shake the indiepop world to its very foundations." The band lists indie legends The Smiths, Echo and the Bunnymen, and The Housemartins among its influences and they certainly should appeal to fans of these and other classic pop groups plus contemporary favorites like Math and Physics Club too. Lead track 'Crazy' is the one that got the band noticed when it appeared on a newly christened Myspace page late last summer. Written and recorded in a four-hour time frame that marked the beginning of Northern Portrait, the song was completed intuitively with absolutely nothing prepared until guitars plugged in. A mix of acoustic and electric Rickenbackers, the guitars jangle in all the right places recalling Smiths classics like 'This Charming Man', and the vocals fit the music perfectly. It's a hit! 'A Quiet Night In Copenhagen' is the first of three additional tracks on the EP and sets the bar pretty high with more jangling guitars, nice tempo changes and other instrumentation. Short and to the point, the song is a fairly universal tale of a kind of voluntary outsiderism. 'Waiting For A Chance' is a bit slower and recalls the brightness of The Trash Can Sinatras or The Sundays if they had a male singer. The song features more of the characteristic Northern Portrait guitar sounds plus some nice keyboards. Final track 'The Fallen Aristocracy' is an ode to all romantics-bittersweet, but definitely more sweet than bitter. Using glockenspiel in addition to guitars, the song bounces along nicely and just might make the case of saving the strongest track for last. This debut demonstrates amazing promise for a new band and leads one to wonder if the b-sides are this good just what does Northern Portrait have in store for its debut album?

Occasional Keepers, The
True North (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 29TH)
PS, UK LTM present True North, the second album from The Occasional Keepers, an ongoing studio collaboration between songwriters Bobby Wratten (Field Mice, Trembling Blue Stars) and Carolyn Allen and Caesar (The Wake). True North was recorded and produced by the Keepers with Ian Catt (St Etienne) in London in February 2008. Guest musician Beth Arzy (Aberdeen, Trembling Blue Stars) features on The Life Of The Fields. Retaining plenty of acoustic, reflective elements from the previous album, this release adds experimental, song-based pop touches to great effect. Track listing: If The Ravens Leave/The Cricket Laced Midnight/Town Of 85 Lights/Leave The Secret There Forever/The Life Of The Fields/Factory Records/I've Realized/Snow And Feathers/Elsinore/A Distant Piano On A Foggy Night. Praise for The Occasional Keepers: "This Sarah supergroup lives up to the expectations that come from such an important meeting of musical minds, and there's a real synergy here" (Exclaim!); "Often the smallest touches have the greatest impact, like dropping a bomb on a calm hillside" (All Music Guide); "An album of rainy day melancholia and innocent beauty" (Leonard's Lair); "Lovely bubble-bath pop and slo-mo waltz" (Teletext). Also available: The Beauty of the Empty Vessel (LTMCD 2439) (2005).

Comparisons to Television & the Gun Club are not far from the mark although their spooky & razor sharp riffs are all their own.

Park Avenue Music
By Hearts + Horses (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 8TH)
PS, US Sacramento couple Wes Steed and Jeannette "Juju" Faith got a shiny new piano - really shiny. So up went the mics and out came the music. Flowing pieces of raw improvisation from Juju were recorded and then dressed, bit by bit, by Wes in layers of modular synth distortion; some for the fun of making soundtracks for short films by New Zealand artist and web designer Fuyuko Akiyoshi; some for the fun of mixing 10 minutes of piano music down to 3; or making 3 minute songs out of 4 measures of sometimes bluesy, sometimes ethereal use of the 88s. When one mic picked up off-the-cuff vocals for several tracks, another picked up the team's beloved cat Harrison's collar bell ringing in the background for what seems the sweetest topping to the already honeyed instrumental "Norway Kitty", the opening track on what has become park avenue music's loveliest accomplishment yet. Befriending cellist Gretchen Lehtonen in time to add her touch to that first track (even if recorded backwards) was a lucky move. The trio has played a handful of boutique performances, each one unique and special as they improvised in the dark while streams of Akiyoshi's imagery served as backdrop. They have also brought a crowded house of listeners to silence - even when equipment failed, piano and cello went on to duet without the noise of synthesizers, drum machines, and Unix-based applications. "by hearts + horses" may seem an odd title, but given that the band has morphed over the years and is indeed changing their name to "hearts + horses", this last effort as park avenue music seemed only fit to be thusly titled. (File under Park Avenue music and/or Hearts + Horses.) "While many artists are using a Moog, Roland, or Juno for bouncy pop, Park Avenue Music approaches the unique instruments as if they were gentle as flowers. It could be Jeannette Faith's concert pianist training or simply a love for exquisite sounds. Either way, To Take With You is an alluring ensemble of downtempo and quiet, sophisticated pop." -Kenyon Hopkin, All Music Guide "Mixing very nice programming of lush electronics with soft, breathy female vocals, it manages to sound somewhat like several different things...without really sounding too much like anyone." - Almost Cool "I'm starting to think that this sort of electronic pop is the new shoegaze for me-no matter how many times I hear these wispy, glitchy sounds, I never seem to get tired of them. And that's especially true when a band like Park Avenue Music does it this well." - Opus Zine

Ponies In The Surf
See You Happy (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 29TH)
PS, US Ponies In The Surf is quietly one of a kind. Siblings and self proclaimed indie music nerds Alex & Camile live in Cambridge, MA though they're originally from Bogota, Columbia. The Ponies build perfect soft pop songs with elements Samba, Beatles, the more sophisticated folk set, the Pop Vocal traditionalists and they're very much akin to The Violent Femmes and Johnathan Richman in terms of song craft, a subtle humor and vulnerability. The Ponies' work is uniquely comforting and highly addictive. It is served with a rare passion and grace. It evokes nostalgia for the above mentioned while remaining firmly planted in its own special, almost timeless place. "After playing in rock bands for some time, Alexander McGregor decided at some point that he simply wanted to make some music that could even appeal to his grandmother. Joined by his sister Camille, the duo plays stripped-down folkish type music that sounds like it could have been created at any point in the past 40 years yet still feels fresh." --ALMOST COOL. "These powerfully quiet traditionalists perform folk songs with a pan-American touch. It's only a shame that music this delicate and warm doesn't garner more notice." -POPMATTERS

PS, US Dramatically shifting & evolving over the course of the album, the sounds strike a deft balance between organic & electronic, dissonant & harmonious, all the while capturing the elusive, abstract emotions of the lyrics. While there are moments here & there that may spark a memory of 60s & 70s psychedelic rock or 80s synth-pop, a hint of Nilsson-esque bar-room piano, Faust-ian analog synths, or delicate strings a la Talk Talk, this is music with eyes gazing into the future.

Secret Shine
All Of The Stars (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 8TH)
PS, US "All of the Stars" is Secret Shine's second studio album, and their first in 14 years. The band took an unscheduled nine year break before returning in 2004 with the release of their back catalogue (After Years) on Clairecords, followed by two emphatically-received EPs of new material in 2006, and live shows in Europe and America. "All of the Stars" encapsulate the passion of Secret Shine's live power pop in the heart-thumping 'Oblivion', 'Voice of the Sea' and 'The Sound of Light' but is both delicate and beautiful in 'All that's left' and 'Last Leaves'. Secret Shine has lost none of the sumptuous boy/girl harmonies and celestial melodies (never more evident than in the heavenly 'Stars in the Sky') that made their debut album Untouched such a classic that is still revered in shoegazing circles today. Secret Shine dedicated 2007 to write and record All of the Stars and demo'd twice the amount of songs they needed for the album so that only the finest would survive. The band have grown on this record - the sound is stronger and more confident, expertly produced and directed by Shine protagonist Jamie Gingell. The band drift effortlessly between the epic, orchestral arrangements of 'Café Crash' and the sparse, haunting piano-led 'Another Day'. All of the Stars would sit comfortably alongside shoegaze classics like Slowdive's Souvlaki, My Bloody Valentine's Loveless and The Pale Saints' The Comforts of Madness, but Secret Shine have created their own unique treasure and possibly the new wave of 'stargaze'.

Strategy
Music for Lamping (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 29TH)
PS, US Strategy's Paul Dickow has been a longtime cornerstone player in Portland, Oregon's electronic and experimental music community. He was once a drummer in the punk group Emergency, a keyboard player in jazz/post-rock's Fontanelle, played drums and electronics in Nudge, DJs eclectic disco and techno sets, and also remixes and produces dance floor bangers as well as ambient, abstract pop expressions under his solo moniker Strategy. He has built up a name releasing acclaimed albums for Kranky and 12"s for labels such as ORAC (Seattle) and Dreck (London) and also by founding the premier Cascadian freedom music record label known as Community Library. For years Paul and Audio Dregs have been comrades and collaborators and now we are proud to bring you his latest offering that collects Strategy's rain-soaked chill out recordings and slow motion filtered dubscapes. These are the tracks rescued from the mornings after the dance parties and longer compositions collected from his studio in moss covered corners of green Cascadian forest caverns. "Music for Lamping contains six years' worth of music that can roughly be called ambient - perhaps "meditative" is a better word. All of this music combines my interest in blurring/expanding/clouding processes--such as granular synthesis, vocoding, and bucket-brigade delay--with happenstance sound sources, such as field recordings or a favorite record sitting around the studio. The earliest music dates to a 2002 CD that was never released, entitled Strategy At Beacon Rock, which was intended as a 'gentle' or 'atmospheric' treatment of plundered audio. The material from 2004 onwards dates to a period of soundwalks in my neighborhood of Northwest Portland (a perfect strolling zone). Taken altogether, these pieces form a traceable thread through my work where I use my usual raw materials to reach a more liquid, spontaneous end result." -Paul Dickow

Bickford tosses off sly line-breaks, equates youth's freedoms with adulthood's burdens, and addresses love, sex, and death all with the same penetrating sanity (to borrow Martin Amis's phrase), as if in the same breath -- one long, slow reflection.

Swift, Richard
Richard Swift as Onasis (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 8TH)
PS, US The double-EP "Richard Swift as Onasis" is as creatively fortifying as it is unhinged and unpolished, a primal slab thrown into the fire for dancing and merriment during the chilly months while we await RICHARD SWIFT'S second full-length. Once upon a time, the idea of a record was to capture a performance, to grab the those undulating wavelengths from the air and stick them to this thing that went round and round, so later on that performance could be heard and felt and experienced again. Before the beloved studio trickery of our beloved Beatles or Beach Boys, cats gathered around a couple microphones, plugged into that thing that went round and round, and let at it. So it's no surprise Swift, a long-in-the-tooth impresario of all not-a-computer, would jangle and stomp out this tangent of jams that tape-echo a generation of pioneers who believed Rock and Roll and the Blues a celestial calling and not a lifestyle choice. Now most listeners won't think about how Swift did this on a cheap four-track; they won't immediately see his nods to Link Wray and Howlin' Wolf; it doesn't matter. The songs stand up. The songs get in your belly and wiggle your hips and stomp your foot and bob your head. They got vibe and atmosphere. They act like great harmony, making whatever they're accompanying richer and wider and thicker.

Tears Run Rings
Always, Sometimes, Seldom, Never (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 8TH)
PS, US When members of Tears Run Rings didn't play well with a big-shot producer, they threw away the old material and set off to create an album on their own. There was only one dilemma: they were now living in three different cities. This Portland and Seattle by way of L.A. collaboration was accomplished in the style of the Postal Service; occasional weekends together produced the frameworks for songs that took shape as they swapped tracks using CDRs and the good 'ole internet. Three years and one self-released EP later, Tears Run Rings presents its debut full length, Always, Sometimes, Seldom, Never. Tears Run Rings features ex-members of The Autocollants, Laura Watling, and both of the masterminds behind Shelflife Records. These pop veterans have abandoned their twee roots and traded it for dense, wall-of-sound arrangements and aggressive distorted guitars -- but that's not to say they have forgotten their pop sensibilities. TRR distances themselves from 90's shoegazers with upfront vocals and catchy singlenote guitar riffs. Their creation is melodically rich, brimming with layers of boy-girl vocals inspired by the harmonies of 60s groups such as The Lennon Sisters and The Caravelles. One of the album strengths is its flow through a range of different tempos. It begins with a lulling, almost hypnotic "Happiness (part one)", explodes with the hard-driving kick of "How Will the Others Survive," then regresses into the atmospheric and melancholy "Beautiful Stranger." TRR demonstrates their affection for Moose's "Live a Little, Love a Lot" by splicing tracks together with ambient noise: church bells ring out of the end of "Mind the Wires" introducing the danceable "Run Run Run"; a cappella voices and the tap of an organ unite "The Weight of Love" and "World Upside Down." Still, the most powerful element of Always, Sometimes, Seldom, Never is the deep, heartfelt (and occasionally heartbreaking) conviction heard here. But maybe this comes natural for band members who spend most of their time wishing they could just be together.

PS, UK CD41 is pleased to announce the fourth volume of Oh! It's A Lovely War, the popular series devoted to archive recordings of songs, marches and descriptive records from the First World War. Almost all of the 50 tracks included on this beautifully packaged double CD set were recorded between 1914 and 1918, and have been carefully digitally restored and remastered from original 78 rpm sources. Volume 4 comprises two full length CDs, featuring 150 minutes of popular songs (There's A Tramp Tramp Tramp, A Perfect Day, K-K-K-Katy), patriotic appeals (The Bulldog's Bark, For Empire & For England, Save Your Kisses 'Till the Boys Come Home), comedy numbers (The Corporal's Ditty, I Want To Be a Hero Too, We Shall All Do the Goose Step) and military marches. Among the rarest recordings are Ten Little Zeppelins by Harry Bluff, Wait 'Til You Get 'Em Up in the Air Boys by Harry Fay, and No More Bully Beef & Biscuits and Plum & Apple, both bemoaning the monotony of rations at the Front. Spoken word selections include the somewhat brutal descriptive sketch Capture of a German Spy, and a rare 1917 recording of a British prisoner of war singing Tipperary, recorded in Germany. An appeal made by the Prince of Wales on behalf the British Legion in 1930 closes the album Oh! Moving Soundtracks (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 15TH)
PS, UK LTM is pleased to announce a CD reissue of the classic compilation album Moving Soundtracks, recorded for chic Belgian indie label Les Disques du Crepuscule. Originally commissioned in 1983, Moving Soundtracks gathered together cover versions of movie music by various Crepuscule artists and associates, including Paul Haig (The Persuaders), Antena, Blaine L. Reininger (Le Mepris), Virna Lindt (The Thomas Crown Affair), Wim Mertens, Steven Brown (Chinatown), Quando Quango, Virginia Astley and The Pale Fountains (a Bond theme). The overall project was produced by Tuxedomoon mainstay Blaine L. Reininger. Some interpretations are faithful, others not! The project was eventually released in 1991, by which time tracks by Alan Rankine, Peter Hook, La Muerte (Experiment in Terror) and others had been added. Curiosities include Seabirds, a charming but obscure Pink Floyd song from the 1969 movie More, and a splendidly offbeat Godfather cover from Tuxedomoon. Other artists added to this new CD edition include Thick Pigeon, Tot Taylor and a former Resident, the late Philip Lithman (aka Snakefinger), with an amazing interpretation of Fellini's 8 1/2. This new CD edition has been digitally remastered from the original master tapes, and features 75 minutes of material. Many of the tracks featured here remain unavailable elsewhere. The artwork features an original image by Crepuscule founder Michel Duval, in homage to an Ennio Morricone album cover from 1964.

Vincent, Gene
A Million Shades Of Blue (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 2ND)
PS, UK Yes indeed! It's Sweet Gene Vincent! Do we need say more? What else do you need to know? Oh, OK then! Back in the dear dead days when singers of 30-ish weren't just about to form their first indie band, GENE, the man who had wowed America, challenged Elvis, launched Rock n Roll in Britain and France and inspired a generation, was seen in his native land as a bit of a has-been...his audience was the French arty intelligentsia and UK Teds...but there were still those who believed in Gene...one was Kama Sutra, the New York label who brought us The Lovin' Spoonful and Gene fanatics The Flamin' Groovies (and obliquely The Shangri-Las too, but that's another story...) In 1969 and 1970 they put Gene in their newly acquired LA studio with the cream of young session men to produce an album. Taking a cue from The Band, Bob Dylan, The Sir Douglas Quintet, and possibly fellow not as old as you might think rocker Dale Hawkins (who had just had an amazing album out himself!) Gene rose to the occasion bigtime! Possibly one of the most unexpected and astonishing albums of roots rock and Americana is what we have here...with Gene as on good form as ever! ** Another rediscovered forgotten classic from RevOla! ** Beautifully remastered By the lovely Nick Robbins...in true RevOla style! ** Ditto goes for artwork by Pepperbox! ** A must for anyone who ever had a heart...Gene Vincent! Does it get any better?? TRACKS: 1. SUNSHINE 2. I NEED WOMAN'S LOVE 3. SLOW TIMES COMIN' 4. DANSE COLINDA 5. GEESE 6. 500 MILES 7. LISTEN TO THE MUSIC 8. IF ONLY YOU COULD SEE ME TODAY 9. Wedding Present, The
El Rey (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 20TH)
PS, US El Rey - the first new album in over three years from The Wedding Present - was recorded in early 2008 in Chicago by Steve Albini. The band returned from an eight-year hiatus in early 2005 with the release of Take Fountain. This long-awaited album brought them back into the spotlight with all the style and sophistication associated with a legendary group, but fans were also pleased to see the band had lost none of the growling angst with which they had burst onto the scene with their 1985 debut, George Best. That intensity has been turned up even further for the new album, El Rey, The Wedding Present's first collaboration with the legendary Albini since the renowned Seamonsters in 1991. Written while David Gedge was living in Los Angeles, El Rey burns with West Coast sunlight; Hollywood seen through the eyes of a gritty Northerner. Speaking about El Rey in Mojo magazine recently, Gedge said: "I've been living in West Hollywood for the last year or so, and while I'm not going to claim that this is my 'L.A.' album, there are some references. I suppose the themes are lust, jealousy, betrayal, regret, and obsession, super-heros the usual. We chose to record with Steve this time because the new songs were sounding very guitary and quite dark. It's been good. As you'd imagine, really; Albini knows his stuff". The Wedding Present will be touring North America in Fall 2008 with the line-up of: David Gedge (guitar & vocals), Terry de Castro (bass), Graeme Ramsay (drums), and Chris McConville (guitar).

Yard
Detrit (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 8TH)
PS, US After dropping some serious science on European labels, Yard turns stateside to Binary Dilemma with a 12" of transcendent organic techno. Detroit grinds and resonates with 909, breaks and aquatic washes of sound bringing to mind gritty Detroit streets. As the beats pound, cascading melodies flood the field and take this to Neo-Detroit next level shit. Squeekr is an aquatic sexy grind of groovy techno reminiscent of an urgent meeting between Pan Sonic & Mark Pritchard while a monster bass line drives hallucinogenic synths, as if they've been dubbing around the dancefloor by Lee Scratch himself. On the flip we're treated to a deep acid remix of Detrit by the legendary Dutch brothers of Funckarma aka CANE. Dropping the ones and zeros as they've never been spun before, sending 303 sequences ricocheting against the chopped beats of the original. Anders Ilar's remix finishes the 12" out with a lush rendition of Detrit that croons and swoons in all the right places. LUSH.

Yellow6
When The Leaves Fall Like Snow (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 15TH)
PS, UK "When The Leaves Fall Like Snow" is the latest release by the remarkably talented Leicestershire guitarist Jon Attwood (aka Yellow6), following ten years of extraordinary creativity, both in terms of quality and productivity (over 30 hours of music on labels such as Resonant, Ochre, Darla, and many more). This double album, bearing the unmistakable and highly personal Yellow6 melodic sound, was conceived and crafted in Stockholm in the autumn and winter of 2007. Reflecting its place of origin, it showcases Yellow6 at its most minimal, each of the two CDs providing the listener with a different way of experiencing the grey and white landscapes of Scandinavia. The first CD takes you on a sweeping journey through tranquil yet incredibly deep soundscapes created by Jon Attwood's effortlessly complex layering of sounds. Nocturnal incursions into the cold and dark realms of Swedish winter... With the sense of isolation and nostalgia one experiences when immersed in a vast alien environment. Jon Attwood's drifting and looping guitars so sonorous and versatile that it feels at times that you're listening to a full orchestra. The second CD, with shorter tracks and a less ambient feel, bears the same beautiful and melancholy qualities in a more intimate way. Imagine the same landscapes but with a fragile light glimmering in the distance or with the warmth of sunlight shimmering on the snow. You feel gently yet irresistibly drawn into the quiet intensity of Yellow6's sonic world, and Jon Attwood's sound invests silence so totally that it is difficult to listen to anything else after this album has finished playing. With "When The Leaves Fall Like Snow", Yellow6 takes you on a wondrous musical voyage without any pre-defined destination. Just press "play" and let yourself be taken over by the enchantment of the journey. (V. Martin).
