Parasol New Arrivals • October 23, 2007

Hey everybody,

Today documents the release of an oh, so very important instructional DVD for the beginners, intermediate and pros alike. What is this DVD you speak of, oh wise one? Well, it’s the Complicated Drumming Technique video from Jens Hannemann gently presented by Fred Armisen. We Parasolians find this tutorial very beneficial since three fourths of the staff are somewhat rhythmically inclined. We are now handing over "the manual" to Mr. Paul Chastain. Sure, he can write a damn fine pop song but he really needs to tighten up on his reggae beats. We may even hand over this useful piece of information to our fearless leader Geoff Merritt but only if he has time to sit and absorb between tending to his numerous bike frames that arrive on a weekly basis here at Parasol. Once upon a time there was a hare (Geoff) who, boasting how he could bike faster than anyone else, was forever teasing tortoise (Roy) for his slowness. Then one day, the irate tortoise (Roy) answered back: "Who do you think you are? There's no denying you're swift, but even you can be beaten!" The hare (Geoff) squealed with laughter. "Beaten in a race? By whom? Not you, surely! I bet there's nobody in the world that can win against me, I'm so speedy. Now, why don't you try?"

It's on ladies and gentleman. Pedal faster bicycle rider.

Richard Lloyd fans and other Seekers should spend some quality time with Richard's latest missive: The Radiant Monkey Philosophy, where he expounds upon the concept behind his new album.

The audio stork dropped off brand new bundles of jams for you to tenderly nurture so carefully look at the list below because these half-pints need open ears and loving hearts.

Dig in and learn your rudiments,

Royal & Paul

Fred Armisen "Jens Hannemann Complicated Drumming Technique" DVD $14.00 (Drag City Instructional)
You Tube Promo: Jens Hannemann
Hot on the heels of his recent guest-drummer appearance with the Jimmy Kimmel Show's house band Friday night former Trenchmouth/Blue Man Group/Those Bastard Souls drummer, current Saturday Night Live cast member (Ferecito!), and occasional movie star Fred Armisen brings his 'complicated drummer' character, Jens Hannemann (he of the wavering European accent and perfect ponytail), to the DVD format. A hilarious spoof on low-budget drummer technique vidoes and rock percussion geekery in general. Everyone will laugh, musicians and drummers (and there are three drummers working at Parasol) will bust a gut.

A Taste Of Ra
Morning of My Life
PS, SWEDEN This is the third and final album in the A Taste of Ra trilogy. Nicolai Dunger, and the cloak of mystery behind the Taste of Ra project has captivated many with its various incarnations of free-folk meanderings, Tim Buckley jazz-howl and Swedish pastoral indie-hum. Dunger describes Morning of My Life as follows: "When we moved to the tent and the light was golden and we were young, and the magazine was all there was to bring, and you woke in the night when the birds were singing just for you and the smell of soil and the warm breath over through you, ohh it moved you. All there was to it, was the morning of my life." He also describes that the overall idea behind the first two A Taste of Ra records was for pure vocal and instrumental experimentation -- using recording techniques on a more personal level. On this final record in the trilogy, he takes a different approach, starting off with one song that he developed together with Swedish musician, songwriter and producer, Jari Haapalainen. The song naturally broke up into six movements, creating a film-like, dramatic pattern, and Johan Berthling made some beautiful arrangements for three of the movements. Starsailor-esque vocals, jazzy horns and loose, clattering drums mix with piano, harp and guitar arpeggios -- just as much of an Impressionistic song cycle as Van Morrison's Astral Weeks.

PS, US Trio of Michael Gibbons, John Gibbons, & Jason Kourkounis, otherwise known as 3/5s of BARDO POND. This continues their sonic exploration of dense, languorous, free expansion. Billowing & exploding like a cluster of hashish stars, the 3 instrumental tracks produce a cosmic energy akin to a quasar in the heavens. Released in a one-time edition of 1000 LPs, this is the rocket ride into the outer stratum at which their previous CDs only hinted.

Besnard Lakes, The
Volume I
PS, US "Volume I" is the debut album by THE BESNARD LAKES, that preceded their recent opus "The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse" which was released on Jagjaguwar in early 2007. "Volume I" was originally released in 2004, and, at the time, The Besnard Lakes were comprised only of husband-and-wife team JACE LASEK and OLGA GOREAS. The Besnard Lakes have just recently become critical darlings, on the strength of their live performances throughout North America and Europe, as well as with their second full-length record "The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse", which quickly made it onto numerous and budding best-albums-of-the-year short-lists by a whole range of music-listening pedigree -- critics, casual and not-so-casual rock listeners, garden variety pop fans, and headphone junkies. Carrying the BREAKGLASS label name, "Volume I" is distributed throughout the world with the help of JAGJAGUWAR.

B.M.S.R. is made up of 3 to 6 mem. at any given time, who are focused on turning their childhood memories into songs. Anthology 1968-1993 [remaster]

Yes, the albums are better places to hear all of these tracks, and there's a typically Cannish disregard for chronology or narrative (i.e., don't hope for liner notes), but this double-disc set is an excellent introduction to the band's 25-year career." Castanets
In The Vines
PS, US RAY RAPOSA of CASTANETS had almost finished his follow-up to "First Light's Freeze" (2005) when three men in strange masks mugged him at gunpoint in front of his home in Bedstuy, Brooklyn. Stealing Raposa's rent money, iPod and security, the three thieves climaxed a year of depression and nomadic, nocturnal dislocation. Not long after the mugging, Raposa completed "In The Vines." Appropriately, the album he was struggling to complete is based on a Hindu fable about being trapped in an inescapable fate, with death and the limitations of our physical lives closing in from all corners. In the fable story, "The Well of Life", a giant net stretched out by a giant woman surrounds a Brahman lost in the forest. The frantic Brahman runs in circles attempting to escape until he falls halfway down a pit and is entangled in vines. He discovers some beehives halfway between the flesh-hungry six-faced elephant at the top of the pit and the waiting serpent at the bottom. As bees buzz around the Brahman and rats gnaw at the vines holding him up, all he can do is gorge on the sweet honey. Heavy stuff, yes, but it isn't all peril, and darkness. The songs are sung with such intimacy and earnestness that "In The Vines" sways somewhere between the serpent, elephant, bees and rats, the honey representing a strange sense of hope and delight in the brief moments of beauty that sustain our lives.

Destroyalldreamers
Wish I Was All Flames
PS, CANADA Destroyalldreamers was founded in the summer of 2002 in Montreal (Canada), by Eric Quach (guitar) & Shaun Doré (drums). Their first compositions were later embellished with the addition of Mathieu Grisé on guitar and Michèle Martin on bass, which led to the recording of their first full-length album "À Coeur Léger Sommeil Sanglant" by Patrick Lacharité (Below the Sea) in early 2004. It was released later the same year on Montreal's label Where Are My Records (Barzin, Epic45, Readymade, etc.). The following year, Destroyalldreamers rode the success of their critically acclaimed debut album, and is offered numerous studio projects to keep them busy. Eric Quach took over the band's production duties with the help of Shaun Doré, Shane Whitbread & Martin Valence. Most of the year was spent on pre-production, live performances and learning how to produce. The resulting studio tracks were used for the aforementioned projects that all saw their release in 2006, which included: a contribution to the shoegaze-homage compilation "Never Lose That Feeling, Volume 2" (other artists includes Hammock, Sing-Sing, etc.) released by ClubAC30 (UK); a contribution for the Propergol Y Colargol rework compilation "Ode to Roger" (other artists includes Eluvium, Giardini di Miro, Helios, etc.) released by Diesel Combustible/Autres Directions in Music (France); a 12" vinyl EP titled "Glare/Halo" released on Claire's Echo (USA), a Clairecords subsidiary label affiliated with the world widely recognized distributor Tonevendor which has proudly dubbed Destroyalldreamers' debut album "À Coeur Léger Sommeil Sanglant" as "The Best Shoegaze Album of 2004". Destroyalldreamers then finished the recording of their second full-length in the fall of 2006. Shortly after, the band has parted ways with bassist Michèle Martin and the release of the album was put aside. They took a short break the next year to pursue different musical and life projects. In the summer of 2007, Destroyalldreamers got back together as an official three-piece, with a close friend filling out on bass for live performances to ready the release of the aforementioned sophomore album entitled "Wish I Was All Flames", again on Where Are My Records in the fall of 2007. This new album is a more focused and mature record, filled with a wide array of sounds, with the added live energy that was developed since their beginnings. It also marks the end of a chapter for Destroyalldreamers' journey as the band has already expressed its wishes to explore new sonic territories. Pre-production for future releases is expected to start in the beginning of 2008

Duchamp, Marcel
Musical Erratum + In Conversation
PS, UK A new CD by influential avant-garde artist Marcel Duchamp, featuring two interpretations of his Musical Erratum for piano, together with four spoken word extracts. Written in 1913, the Musical Erratum for piano forms part of the sequence of notes and projects which led to Duchamp's celebrated artwork, La Mariée mise à nu par ses célibataires, même (The bride stripped bare by her batchelors, even, often called The Large Glass). La Mariée... is also the sub-title of the 1913 piano work. Abstract, elusive and even "inachievable" according to the artist, the Musical Erratum consists of two scores. In the first, notes are replaced by numbered keys, and virtuoso performance is discouraged in favour of novel mechanical instrumentation. The second offers a form of random composition, by which numbered balls are dropped into the moving wagons of a toy train. Famously, Duchamp described the whole as "a very useless performance, in any event." Two versions are included on this new CD, including a conventional (but non-virtuoso) performance on piano, and another on which spinning rotary discs brush the piano strings to produce extraordinary tones. The extended 74 minute CD also includes four spoken word extracts by Duchamp (English language), including a fascinating lecture delivered in Houston in 1957, The Creative Act, and a lengthy interview recorded in 1959.

Favorita
S-T (DELAYED, PREORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 30TH)
PS, CANADA Twelve years after it was recorded but never released, Popsicle Recordings will present the sole album from Swedish indiepop pioneers Favorita. The brainchild of former Beagle and current Metro Jets frontman Magnus Borjeson, Favorita fell foul of record company politics on the eve of this album's 1997 release and it never saw the light of day. The band split up, the album was forgotten. Popsicle Recordings didn't want Favorita to pass into obscurity. Sure, the album has circulated as a bootleg among discerning music lovers for five or six years, but an album this good deserves a shot at reaching a wider audience. So they dusted off the master tapes, added eight bonus cuts and both of the band's low-budget videos, unearthed photos from the two promo shoots the band did and coaxed some inspired sleeve notes from noted Swedish journalist and blogger (and former Beagle drummer) Anders Mildner. The result is the definitive Favorita experience. Everything you could want to know about this exceptional but criminally short-lived band, there on one disc.

Gang Gang Dance
Rawwar
PS, US "Rawwar" is the first glimpse of exactly what the band have been up to over this prolific year. Clocking in at just over twenty minutes and sprawled across three tracks, the release plays like a GANG GANG DANCE sampler of sorts; a taster for what is to come. "Rawwar" opens with "Nicoman": a live favorite from the last few years which has been refined in the studio.bombastic and dance-oriented it blends the bands affection for musical styles, propelling the listener through the four minutes of audible tribal chaos, while at the same time demonstrating GGD's talent for pop melody. "Oxygen Demo Riddim" finds the band improvising and building musical ideas into a dreamy hypnotic instrumental interlude. The final, almost cinematic, track is a studio composition entitled "The Earthquake That Frees Prisoners" which unfolds over ten minutes. This was painstakingly assembled in the studio and incorporates conversational dialog from their deceased band member Nathan Maddox interwoven into the bands compositional structure.

Glowstyx (a.k.a. Bong-Ra)
Class of 1992
PS, UK We know what you're asking yourself, what's newer than new-rave? Well, what about OLD-RAVE! Just when you thought the true spirit of Rave was lost to Indy-rock poster boys, Glowstyx arrives with the smashing debut "Class of 1992"! Produced by rave-master Jason Köhnen, (AKA Bong-Ra), Glowstyx gives you good-ol' breakbeat Rave just like you remembered it, but somehow slightly updated and ready for the dance floor! Over 3 years in the making and meticulously constructed from an archive of over 4 gigabyte of old-school rave nostalgia, Glowstyx successfully manages to deliver 12 tracks that seemingly are warped here from over more than a decade ago. Somehow the charm, humor and excitement of Rave got lost in the growing popularity of synthetic repetitive dance music; focusing less on hooks, catchy melodies and simple song structures. But once you hear Glowstyx, you'll realize the power of the music itself is here to stay! Bring back the high pitch vocals! Bring back the piano breakdowns, "mentasm" and rolling breaks! The old-school Rave revival is here, and let's all drop some E to celebrate it! About Cock Rock Disco: Cock Rock Disco was founded by Jason Forrest (AKA DJ Donna Summer) and was established to release amazing new music by a new generation of producers from all over the world. Please look for upcoming releases; they are great, we promise.

Hawkwind
Self-Titled [re-issue]
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Produced by former Pretty Things guitarist Dick Taylor, Hawkwind's first album was rightfully compared to Pink Floyd's early sound: an appealing conglomeration of hippie rock grooves and interplanetary guitar trips set to the phosphorescent wandering of Dik Mik's electronics and Nik Turner's cool sax playing. Hawkwind may not have been their most lucrative album, but it's where it all began. Hawkwind's initial galactic blues-rock sound is based on Dave Brock's guitar playing, rising smoke-like through the haze of lyrical space funk... Hawkwind's sound indeed solidified as their career moved upward through the '70s, but their first album magnificently introduces the starting point of what was going to be a long and peculiar journey."

PS, GERMANY "A matter of consciousness": Lapsed's third album sees his pair up with turntablist and producer nonnon and a crew of renowned MC to deliver a wild ride of glitchy electronic hip-hop with an edge. Ranging from heavy head bangers to lyrical narratives, "The Death Of Convenience" impresses by its variety, detail and its maturity. A very rich, well thought and thought-provoking album bearing fruits of many influences and sleepless nights of careful composition.

Lazarus
Hawk Medicine
PS, US "Hawk Medicine" is the first LAZARUS album written and performed as a group, and it shows. The eccentricities of each member shine brightly, with {TREVOR} MONTGOMERY'S voice no longer the grounded base, but more of an ominous presence drifting above and below. Produced by the band and engineered in large part by JASON QUEVER of THE PAPERCUTS (for which Montgomery is also a member), "Hawk Medicine" imagines an alternate world where Bruce Springsteen and Johnny Cash take turns scaring each other with their political ghost stories while driving down a foggy highway at night with the headlights off. In spite of this darkness, "Hawk Medicine" is undoubtedly the most hopeful Lazarus album yet, and it's this precarious balance that also makes it the most mesmerizing.

Letters Letters
S-T
PS, UK This is the debut album from Montreal/Chicago trio Letters Letters, a band made up of veteran electronic music producer Mitchell Akiyama, singer Jenna Robertson and producer/singer Tony Boggs. Mitchell Akiyama has been an active part of the music scene for some time now as a solo artist, label boss and collaborator with various other musicians, most notably with Boggs (as Désormais) and Robertson (as Avia Gardener), but this is the first time the three musicians have put their heads together and created something which absolutely defies their earlier work. Turning electronic music and post-rock on its head, Letters Letters instead decided to look to the early '80s. With broken synthesizers, fizzled-out drum machines and the usual arsenal of guitars and overdriven amplifiers, they managed to figure out a perfect pop formula. Taking the usual hooks and choruses and feeding them through a mire of grimy effects, they ended up with something flickering and desperately neon-colored. Music for day-glo wrist bands and basement parties, this is a fresh take on the DIY lo-fi scene, and even if the whole fanzine culture has broken down, making way for blogs and webzines, it doesn't mean we have to lose touch with the grittier side of life.

Guns Babes Lemonade
PS, US Since early 2006, the one man phenomenon Muscles has been making some serious noise both locally and internationally. His sound is built around keyboards, synths packaged full of extraordinary party anthems, explosive vocal harmonies, rigid techno, lo-fi house and soft trance. My Little Airport
Zoo Is Sad, People Are Cruel
PS, SPAIN MY LITTLE AIRPORT is an indie-pop/electro-noise-pop band from Hong Kong (the second Hong Kong artist in the Elefant Records story, right after THE PANCAKES), formed by P and Nicole, college classmates since 2001, and well known in the Hong Kong area thanks to the big success they had with their debut album. "Zoo is sad, people are cruel", is a fourteen-song album compiling the best moments off their two albums. A sweetest selection that will make you laugh and it will make you sigh, and above all it will fill you with joy. Their lyrics are about relationships and stories between P and his friends and acquaintances. Really, the lyrics are about this. Just check out song titles like "Victor, fly me to Stafford", "You don't wanna be my girlfriend, Phoebe" or "Leo, are you still jumping out of windows in expensive clothes?". Their twee-pop sound shares the naïveté of the Sarah Records bands, the simple chrams of CONFETTI and THE SOFTIES and the unaffected intonations of HEAVENLY's Amelia Fletcher. Sometimes, their sound tends more towards punk-pop à la HELEN LOVE (as in the short pill that is "Gigi Leung is dead"), and they also openly acknowledge their fondness for SLOWDIVE y MOJAVE 3, who might be a big influence on the final track, "Dee, it may all end up tomorrow". But, with a song titled "When I listen to The Field Mice", what else could they be but an indie band?

Nobuko Hori
Xtoyourmilkyhair
PS, US A quiet hurricane. It's been heading straight for us, but no one has really put out the warning call yet, and it's probably to late. Over the last couple year Nobuko Hori has been building up, making album covers, music videos. Appearing in collaborations, doing remixes. Including working with other people like Christopher Willits (12k, Ghostly International), and O.Lamm (Active Suspension), to name a few. Now that she has reached full steam, landfall will
be soon. In this case, the torrent of energy is mainly build out of some jacked up electronics, and nobuko's voice. Sometimes quiet, sometimes loud. The sound ebb and flow, sometimes lulling you into safety, other time tossing you out into center of the storm. Nobuko was born and raised in the Kansai area of Japan. Witch is the area around Osaka. There must be something in the water there, cause it seems to culture people with no boarders on art. She moved to Tokyo to study art, and has since moved to NYC. We here at music related think she's a great unique talent, and continues the kansai's area history of pushing left field pop and experimentation forward. We're happy to finally release her debut album "xtoyourmilkyhair".

Octis
The Social Club Nº6
PS, US MICK BARR'S guitar style is the sound of musical entropy. His compositions, nestled in that grey area somewhere between grindcore and classical, have the air of some sort of slow building chaos, seemingly spiraling out of control. But Barr, here in his solo incarnation OCTIS, maintains the poise of a classical composer. His style of heavily-distorted playing could commonly be deemed "shredding," but the songs found on this installment of THE SOCIAL CLUB are anything but mindless noodling. Backed by an avant-garde pedigree, with work in bands like Quix*o*tic, Orthrelm, and a duo with Zach Hill of Hella, Barr makes intelligent music for the metal-inclined

Owls, The
Daughters and Suns [CD+DVD]
PS, US The long awaited long player from the Minneapolis' The Owls is finally finished. Apart from a few compilations The Owls haven't seen a release since 2004's "Our Hopes and Dreams" mini lp. Instead of spending countless hours in a studio the band decided to make them more self-sufficient and set up the recording studio themselves which there is always a learning curve involved. Three songwriters Brian Tighe, Maria May, and Allison LaBonne come together with drummer John Jerry and special friends to create an unlikely musical voyage, aboard ships, carnival rides, airplanes; trespassing through backyards, human resources departments, and down perilous roads into the distance. Bitter yet life affirming, the Owls console comic strip characters, invent the perfect man, party on the eve of the apocalypse, explore the notion of empire, pay their bills by candlelight, and send flowers into sewers before bidding listeners a rousing adieu. Rich with melody and male/female harmony Daughters and Suns tenders buoyant, laid-back pop with gentle strikes of lightning.

Phosphorescent
Pride
PS, US Musicians often head to New York - it's a familiar story. But something magical happened when MATTHEW HOUCK picked up stakes halfway through making his new PHOSPHORESCENT record, "Pride," and moved to Brooklyn from Athens, Georgia. "Pride" is something different. While it's not without the moments of sheer abandon that have made Phosphorescent's work unmistakable-"At Death, A Proclamation" thunders into familiar territory-mostly gone are the messy marching bands and evangelical fervor. Here, Houck instead channels something more mystical and haunting, offering up a dark, meditative set of songs that is all the more spiritual-sounding for its restrained tone. On previous albums, he's recruited guest musicians to fill the gaps, but on "Pride," Houck has only enlisted the services of a makeshift choir, otherwise recording every instrument himself. His achingly cerebral delivery recalls ARTHUR RUSSELL, but honestly, "Pride" sounds like nothing else we've ever heard. These are poems uttered in an empty field, punctuated by shouts and hollers, as if from a singer either abandoned or possessed. The lyrics are Houck's strongest ever, wrapped in washed out choral etudes that could be channeled from a rural French chapel or a solemn African tribe in prayer. "Pride" sounds like it was made by a man set free. In fact, "Pride" sounds broken free of time and place altogether. Yet still it is warm, familiar, and welcoming-a record to call home.

PS, US After three years of relative silence, warped indie-pop collective SATURDAY LOOKS GOOD TO ME return triumphantly with their fourth studio album "Fill Up The Room". Following two critically acclaimed releases with Polyvinyl Records, this marks the beginning of the band's work with K Records, and a dramatic progression from their 60's tinged retro-pop sound to a more textured, experimental and colorful breed of pop music. Songwriter, producer, guitarist and lead vocalist Fred Thomas leads the Saturdays through a shifting palette of sonic joys on Fill Up The Room. Renowned for their production and arrangement, SLGTM is true to form with these new developments, meshing soaring string sections, harpsichords and interstellar fuzz guitar with found sound samples and ghostly wordless vocal melodies. By the end, it's clear that "Fill Up The Room" acts as a powerful song cycle, repeating themes of love, death and redemption in a way free of teenage existential crises, but leaning more towards feelings of unbearable, unreasonable joy and the desire to celebrate all the misery and terror of life as part of the wonder.

Shark Move
Ghede Chokra's
PS, GERMANY Indonesian rock pioneers Shark Move started playing in Bandung, Indonesia in 1970 and was founded by Benny Soebardja, who plays lead guitar and sings. The group combined rock music and English lyrics with traditional harmonies and progressive sounds. While other bands at that time were still playing sweetened pop music, this was really an experimental recording for the time and place it was made. Unfortunately, at the end of 1970, the keyboard player passed away, so Benny decided not to continue with his band and formed a new one named Giant Step (which might come out soon on Shadoks music). Ghede Chokra's is a very complex prog album which is as strong as many good UK albums of the same period, with that little something extra that makes this album unique and great.

Shrigley, David / Various Artists
Worried Noodles
PS, US "I didn't make a record. I couldn't be bothered to make a record. It would have been too difficult. It was easier not to make a record," writes DAVID SHRIGLEY about his LP-sized book of song lyrics. The original "Worried Noodles" songbook reveals a never-ending curiosity; the lyrics are simple poetry, ironic yet somehow honest, and insistently inciting. The book merged the three spheres in Shrigley's work - art, book, and music - yet it was silent. That first edition, also released by TOMLAB, sold out within just 6 months of its publication two years ago. The book found a slew of new admirers of David Shrigley's work in pop music circles, wherein the idea of adapting these songs to music was recognized as something that needed to happen. In collaboration with David Shrigley, Tomlab gathered a diverse selection of musicians and bands from the unknown to the legendary to receive a copy of the book. Many were already familiar with David Shrigley's work, and some are among his most devoted fans. Those who did not know of his work instantly fell in love with his quirky drawings and words. All of the artists wished to join this collaboration and delivered their stellar songcraft! During the process of the collaboration, Shrigley found perhaps the best words to describe the strong enthusiasm present in the project: "Now we have opened the can of worms we have to deal with the consequences." The can now counts 39 worms - all exclusives!

The pair have been kindred spirits for many years, with Townend being a sensitive and crucial ear in engineering Ambarchi's landmark solo recordings. It was their shared love for expansive pop that led them to their first musical collaboration together as Sun, released on Staubgold in 2003. The self-titled debut was a laidback delight of many melodic charms and artful creation, as sweet as it was wry in its lyricism. Sun Electric
Lost & Found 1998-2000
PS, GERMANY Lost & Found (1998-2000) is the never-released follow-up album to 1998's Via Nostra by Berlin's Sun Electric (Max Loderbauer, Tom Thiel). Who is Sun Electric? Sun Electric is to ambient music what The Sex Pistols was to punk music. But since electronic music abandoned the pathetic poses of rock music, nobody had to die to make this unique band history. The Sun Electric members are regarded as innovators of ambient music - or electronic listening music or intelligent dance music - depending on what you prefer. After electronic music exploded in the late '80s/early '90s, the music seemed more or less to be restricted to forming the heartbeat of homogeneous party crowds. Like The Orb's Alex Paterson, Loderbauer and Thiel allowed the sounds to detach themselves from the action on the dancefloor to lead a life of their own. After having released six albums on the R&S/Apollo label, Loderbauer and Thiel lost interest in their hardware equipment and explored computer-based modes of music production. Lost + Found is more than an archaeological find, it's the rediscovery of electronic music as an alien experience, as a sonic challenge. Thiel and Loderbauer avoid the pathetic narcissism of overproduction: the plague in current electronic music production. Lost + Found was recorded in the three successive years after Sun Electric's final album was released in 1998. Listening to Lost + Found, one might feel like visiting a jungle: the music creates a complex soundscape, reminding of the noises of weather conditions and the sounds of a multitude of unknown animals. While current electronic music triggers the movements of the dancer's bodies like an aerobics class, the effects of Sun Electric's music on mind and body are complex and open.

Supersilent
8
PS, NORWAY Supersilent celebrate 10 years as a groundbreaking quartet with their first studio album in almost 5 years, the eighth release in their series. Members Arve Henriksen (trumpet, voice, electronics, drums), Helge Sten (audio virus), Ståle Storløkken (keyboards, synthesizers) and Jarle Vespestad (drums) form a band that refuse categorization, with experiments in such disparate elements as ambient, jazz, electronica, rock, techno, noise and musique concréte. As with Supersilent 6, 8 was recorded during a 5-day studio session at all-analog facility, Athletic Sound in Halden, Norway. From the monumental hardcore blizzard storm of 1-3, to the elegant electro-jazz of 4, and from the quiet soundscapes of 5, to the epic 6, Supersilent have yet again re-invented themselves with an album that to a certain degree explores more abstract and mysterious pathways beyond category and comparisons. The 68 minutes that ended up on 8 was chosen from 5 hours of finished music, and at one time the group considered a double or even triple album. The album has been mastered by U.S. mastering guru, Bob Katz in close collaboration with producer Deathprod, and it's been handled almost like classical music to keep the extremely dynamic range of the original recording. Again, the names of the players do not appear on the cover. This is Supersilent music, collective work, group improvising, and not a matter of individual grandstanding. They never rehearse as a group and don't discuss the music with each other, meeting only to play concerts or to record. Supersilent music lives in a no-man's-land between the genres, somewhere between rock, electronica, jazz and modern composition. Needless to say, there are no overdubs.

Tullycraft
Every Scene Needs a Center
PS, US New album from twee heroes! Tullycraft is known for writing indie pop anthems. Over the years, the band has penned a handful of songs that practically define the twee movement in America. It would be a safe statement to say that the new album, Every Scene Needs a Center, picks up where the band's fourth album, Disenchanted Hearts Unite, left off, but that would also be selling Tullycraft short. This new album, recorded entirely on analog tape, is not simply a collection of wonderfully snarky pop songs with one or two anthems thrown in, but is an entire record of ultra-catchy, smart indie pop anthems that takes aim at vampires, the English class system, goth waitresses, and much more. This time around, Tullycraft may have actually crafted a twee masterpiece. PITCHFORK: "Yes, it's the esoteric world of too-clever, self-referential indie-pop, but hey, you can dance to it too ... Tullycraft kick[s] some twee ass." /// MAGNET: "Decidedly extroverted, Seattle's Tullycraft took a punk approach to its indie-pop aesthetic ... like a group of kids covering the Violent Femmes."

Return of the Instro-Hipsters Vol. 2: Groovy Instrumentals from the UK 1965-1973
PS, UK Vol. 2 presents 20 previously uncomped groovy instrumentals from the UK circa '65-'73. Hot on the heels of the On The Brink... compilation, the Psychic Circle label presents tunes designed to stimulate and relax in equal measure. Music that is as evocative as any color slide of Swinging London. If David Bailey could have photographed sound instead of images, he would have come up with something like this. Warlocks
Heavy Deavy Skull Lover
PS, US New album! FILTER MAGAZINE: "The first album for Tee Pee from Los Angeles psych-rock band the Warlocks is definitely heavy deavy. It swirls and sears with ear-bleeding feedback and monumental guitar patterns. The band's ranks have fluctuated in members throughout the years, but the band has always remained based in the vision of Bobby Hecksher. Hecksher has found an accommodating home at Tee Pee, alongside similar California bands Entrance and Brian Jonestown Massacre. Heavy Deavy was recorded by Rod Cervera, who worked with the Warlocks back on the band's first EP and has also done studio time with the likes of Lavender Diamond, Weezer, and Silversun Pickups." Ween
La Cucaracha
PS, US For the past 20 years, Ween has established itself as a major artistic force, combining off-the-wall musical antics with brilliantly creative songwriting. La Cucaracha, Ween's new studio record, is an eclectic, dark, humorous, and bizarre assortment of songs. In other words, it's a typical Ween record. These thirteen tracks, though strongly diverse, share a common theme: relationships. It's a theme that can be at once joyful, morbid, humorous, and often frightening. From the tenderly introspective "Lullaby" to the disturbingly offensive "My Own Bare Hands," Ween pulls no punches in its latest endeavor, which acheives its power through sharp wit, clever songwriting, and brutal honesty.

Wooden Sky, The
When Lost At Sea
PS, US Toronto's Wooden Sky have cut together a collage of folk songs on their debut record, When Lost at Sea, that has drawn comparisons ranging from Townes Van Zandt to Okkervil River. Swelling between 4 and 7 members the group handle each song differently as the record runs the course from ragged rockers like 'North Dakota' to the delicately orchestrated 'The Wooden Sky'. Each song is delivered with a sense of urgency echoing the records underlying themes and bridging the gap across the range of dynamics. THANKS CAPTAIN OBVIOUS REVIEW: "The songs on their album When Lost At Sea are twang-filled tales peppered with harmonica, banjo and slide guitar. Lead singer Gavin Gardiner's scratchy vocals navigate through songs that have a literary, narrative feel to them. And while they never approach the scope of bookishness that a band like the Decemberists may portray, there's definitely a rich sense of storytelling apparent in the folk-rock gems that comprise the album."

Yeasayer
All Hour Cymbals
PS, US It would be an untruth if we were to tell you that our hearts weren't ailing and our ears weren't sleeping before stumbling across some YEASAYER demos over a year ago. Nibbling at the idea of raising the white flag, we have since then lifted our chins and turned about face. Over the past year we have somehow managed to keep the music of YEASAYER under lock and key. A recording process that took place in two states, two cities, four buildings, and spanned 11 months, you would think it was a strenuous affair. It wasn't, it was a pleasure. The outcome, YEASAYER'S debut release, "ALL HOUR CYMBALS," is a completely mystifying and magical travel. It would only be a lazy stab to make modern day comparisons. Please, make this an exercise. Pulling from every spectrum and mashing, then re-mashing, the YEASAYER collective have bent genre's until unrecognizable. YEASAYER'S components are four, each multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, songwriter, and chanter. Founded by half of a barbershop quartet, then followed by the rhythm, YEASAYER is a tight brotherhood undisrupted by the external.

Am-boy is coastal NJ's Forrest Wolf, and 'Horrible Oracle Blessedness' is his third full-length release. Perhaps more so than ever before, 'Horrible Oracle Blessedness' is filled with his trademark sugary hooks and pristine production that will leave you with a smile on your face and a head full of melodies you won't stop humming. Arp
In Light (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 6TH)
PS, US Arp is the most recent project of Alexis Georgopoulos, formerly of Tussle & The Alps. As an emblem of Alexis' commitment to "natural electronic music" (bridging the natural and electronic worlds),nearly all of In Light was recorded live.Very few loops were used -in fact, only one. This gesture was meant to bring back some of the rough (re:natural) edges that have been lost in so much "Electronic Music" today. In Light is a luminous album of warm, pulsing music. Like dreams or rich, saturated moments that make one lose sense of time, they are grainy snapshots, like old films of one's own experiences, elevated moments. Call it Pop Minimalism.Call it Cosmic Pop. Call it Cosmic Minimalism. Call it what you will.

Barzin
Barzin (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 6th)
PS, UK "Barzin's self-titled debut album is a gorgeous marriage of mood, minimalism and melancholia. Imagine Slint's quieter moments or Hayden's more gothic opuses and you'll have an idea of Barzin's approach... This is a morose masterpiece, an exercise in understatement that leaves the listener wanting more..." "... a sad beauty worthy of entry among the slow-core canon of Red House Painters, Cat Power, Low, et al". These are some of the many praises showered on the eponymous debut album of Toronto singer/songwriter Barzin, which was originally released in North America on Where Are My Records (2003), and also had a short-run release in France and Italy on the French label Ocean Music. Since 2004, it has been out of print in Europe, and will now be available for the first time worldwide. The follow-up album, 'My Life In Rooms' was released in Europe in 2006 and was similarly acclaimed, leading to a demand for the re-issue of the S/T debut. A new album is scheduled for release in 2008. "This eponymous CD boasts ripe writing skills, delicate arrangements, and exquisite production. Barzin's songs originate from the melancholic indie rock of Low, with hints of the American neofolk current...There is no weak moment on this album". Recommended (4/5) - All Music Guide.

Making records as Mike Bones removes my voice from the song, at least in my own mind and leaves a song's meaning and intention ambiguous. I don't have to show my cards." Although Bones has been writing songs for years, worked as a guitar player for The Mighty Flashlight, Damon McMahon, and Lizzie Trulie, and is a member of cult favorites Soldiers of Fortune (a band featuring members of Oneida, Home, and Oakley Hall), "The Sky Behind the Sea" marks his debut solo recording.

Brother Kite, The
Moonlit Race (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 6TH)
PS, US Over a year in the making, The Brother Kites Moonlit Race EP has undergone several conceptual changes as time has moved on. The final product is one to cherish. Originally conceived as a single for Get On, Me - arguably the catchiest song on their masterful sophomore album Waiting For The Time To Be Right the EP stays true to form by leading off with that track. From there on, the listener is treated to five exclusive tracks. We are treated to alternate versions and mixes of two album tracks from WFTTTBR, including the title cut and Hopeless and Unsung. A never-before-released live version of Never in Years from a WERS 88.9 radio session in Boston is also included. Sandwiched in the middle of the disc are two solid non-album tracks. Unearthed/Digging in the Dirt is taken from DJ Potters creepy child-zombie short film Of All That Is Unearthed. The track Half Century appears here in hard-copy format for the first time. The track was originally recorded for the most recent Adult Swim download compilation entitled Warm and Scratchy, and saw the band sitting comfortably alongside an impressive array of indie notables such as The Rapture, TV On The Radio, The Raveonettes, Fennesz, Broken Social Scene, The Liars, Asobi Seksu, Amusement Parks on Fire, Les Savy Fav and more. In addition to the six audio tracks, the CD has enhanced content featuring three videos! The alternate version of Hopeless and Unsung gets paired with an artistically shot video. I'm Not The Only One has been a fan-favorite over the past year, having been downloaded off the band's website and YouTube more than 5,000 times. The video is beautifully and professionally shot, and appears here on an official format for the first time. The disc is wrapped up with a funny, behind-the-scenes, home-shot video by the band about the recording of the penultimate album track Get On, Me.

Bryars, Gavin
Hommages (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 13TH)
PS, UK Remastered. Originally released in November 1981 on Les Disques du Crepuscule, Hommages was recorded in Leicester in February 1981 and produced by noted Belgian new music composer Wim Mertens. The album was conceived as a series of diverse homage's to other composers, which include Bill Evans (My First Homage), Ferruccio Busoni and Gustav Holst (The English Mail-Coach and The Vespertine Park) and Percy Grainger (Hi-Tremolo). Featured musicians included Andrew Bilham, Ronald Reah, Andrew Renshaw, Nigel Shipway, Dave Smith, John White and Marie Wilson, as well as Gavin Bryars himself on piano and vibraphone. The album is the only one that documents the important period between Bryars' early experimental music and later works from Medea onwards, as well as his enthusiasm for small composer/performer ensembles. The new 63 minute digital remaster of Hommages now includes two bonus tracks composed and recorded by Bryars during the same period: Danse Dieppoise, and the lengthy piano piece Out of Zaleski's Gazebo. The booklet features extensive notes by Gavin Bryars on the origin and performance of all six pieces, and preserves the original album cover artwork by Marc Borgers.

By The End Of Tonight/Tera Melos
Complex Full of Phantoms (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 6TH)
PS, US Coming off the heels of the scarcely limited 3" CD series - and a full two years after the release of their debut album - BY THE END OF TONIGHT has finally dropped the anvil of badass on us with six new jams. In the two years since the release of their brilliant "A Tribute To Tigers", BTEOT have toured almost non-stop, playing every rock club, living room (or even barn) that would have them. Their relentlessness has paid off, as their half of this split album with good friends and like-minded power jammers TERA MELOS is far and away their most accomplished work to date. Not to be outdone, Sacramento's Tera Melos have also been on the road more than they've been home this year, touring with the likes of Fall of Troy and Horse the Band. Their frantic, absurdly complex songs are the perfect compliment to By the End of Tonight's darker, more sinister instrumental metal. Though both bands play a hyper-catchy, addictive form of spastic punk, Tera Melos brings to mind a hybrid of fellow Sacramento speed freaks Hella and Cap'n Jazz, while BTEOT draws an unfathomable arc between Blink 182 and The Jesus Lizard. The combination makes this by far the strongest release to date from either band.

Charalambides
Likeness (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 30TH)
PS, US This is a return to the spontaneous composition of previous records
such as Houston & Union. Most all of the tracks on this release sprung forth after 'record' was pressed, & were fleshed out via
overdubs, editing, & a malfunctioning space echo over the course of the next few months. This departs from the warm psych in favor of the lush & layered vocal strata of Christina's later solo works, & a chillier, more abrasive guitar sound.

"Citay really nail that rich acoustic-electric rolling tabla honeyn harmoney sound that all those heavy bands - Sabbath and Zeppelin, especially-used to do, back when all the best musicians were inspired by what the Incredible String Band were doing, and were still able (or willing) to express a feminine side to go with their preening barbarian or depressive wail aspects...This is an album without a sell-by date, with a song for every season...Monumental." ---ARTHUR MAGAZINE

Citay
Little Kingdom (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 6TH)
PS, US Welcome to CITAY'S "Little Kingdom." It's an otherworldly place, full of psychedelic swirl, soaring harmonies and grandiose jams. "Little Kingdom" is the second album from San Francisco's Citay. It's an epic journey, and an album that sounds out of place in 2007 - a classic in the purest sense. Like Citay's 2006 self-titled debut, the '70s rock sensibility is intact; Thin Lizzy, acoustic Led Zeppelin, Big Star and the Byrds all remain touchstones. But "Little Kingdom" moves further into ambitious composition, referencing Popul Vuh, Animals-era Pink Floyd, the Fripp-Eno collaborations, and early Mike Oldfield. The twin leads are still huge, the ballads still sweet, but Citay is reaching for more on "Little Kingdom." "Little Kingdom" is lush and beautiful; a grand, epic work that harkens back to day when studio excess was encouraged and a premium was placed on composition. To borrow a line from Arthur's review of Citay's debut, "this is an album without a sell-by date, with a song for every season."

PS, SWEDEN Club 8 is finally back with their long awaited sixth album. "The boy who couldn't stop dreaming" is everything we'd ever hoped it would be - it's pop music at it's most profound, balancing perfectly between sunshine and melancholia. Twelve songs that'll make you sing along about death while dreaming of summer days. A glorious return to say the least. After having released three albums in just
