Acid Mothers Temple & The Cosmic Inferno
Pink Lady Lemonade: You're From Outer Space
PS, UK This really could be AMT's first 'summer album.' Unlike previous
Cosmic Inferno albums this one doesn't reach in the red status often
-- it's more out there, like they've gone back to their mountain retreat
and taken too much mushroom tea perhaps. But when it does finally
soar, Kawabata's guitar has never sounded so alive. The first AMT&TCI
studio recordings since the addition of Pikachu, drummer and vocalist
with Osaka grenade-girl duo Afrirampo. The popular AMT standard 'Pink
Lady Lemonade' showcases a 21st century acid rock update on the '60s
San Francisco psychedelic sound. On 'Pink Lady Lemonade - You're From
Space,' the Cosmic Inferno crew give PLL a new lease of life and reinvent
it as a trippy/chilled out monster. As it rolls on, they sing, adding
new riffs and taking it to the stars and back. It's like hearing it
for the first time all over again.

Alps, The
III
PS, UK Although III might be the third album from San Francisco trio
The Alps, it marks their first studio-based record and a fresh direction
for the psychedelic supergroup. Made up of Tarentel mainman Jefre
Cantu-Ledesma, ex-Tussle member Alexis Georgopoulos (better known
as ARP), and ex-Troll member Scott Hewicker, there is a deft amount
of skill on display as the three rip through eight tracks of sizzling
spiritual bliss. Comparisons here are easy to bring up -- Popol Vuh,
Ennio Morricone and Serge Gainsbourg spring to mind for starters,
as the band toss and tangle through thick drum breaks and reverberating,
sun-drenched guitar lines. III feels like a lost soundtrack to some
crumbling Italian surrealist classic with its pounding bass lines
and swirling synths. The finest excesses of progressive rock and the
leanest intricacies of the psychedelic folk scene have been splashed
together with a distinct, dusty funk overlook to produce something
which is totally out of time. The Alps show us that there's more to
psychedelia than meets the eye.

Autistic Daughters
Uneasy Flowers
PS, GERMANY Released on CD in March of 2008 on Kranky, Uneasy Flowers
is the second album by New Zealand's Autistic Daughters, the intercontinental
trio of Dean Roberts (guitar, vocals), Martin Brandlmayr (percussion,
computer) and Werner Dafeldecker (guitar, bass). It is also the fourth
in a series of records in which Roberts, having begun in more abstract
territory in New Zealand's mid-1990s "free noise" ferment,
has embraced song, lyric and voice as vessels for topographic and
psychoanalytic tracings of the impacts of territory and nomadism on
the subject. This is reflected by the shape-shifting nature of the
outfit: while Autistic Daughters (whose name comes from a lyric from
their first record Jealousy And Diamond) are resolutely a trio, they
also work in cinematic format, with ancillary players behind the trio's
complex, worm-turning arrangements: in this instance, Chris Abrahams
of The Necks, Martin Siewert and Valerio Tricoli. With Uneasy Flowers,
Roberts traces the internal and external workings of one protagonist:
or, rather, a protagonist who "contains multitudes," a Whitmanian
figure that dissolves the unified self. Rather, this character, "Rehana,"
embodies multiplicity and fragmentation in order to both a) address
loss and b) aim toward transfiguration, transcendence. There are traces
in the lyrics -- traces of addiction and desire, myth and transformation
-- that are obliquely reflected in the music's structure, its uneasy
tension between the pop song (the "moment") and experiment
(the "process"). In some ways, it reminds of the structural,
loop-based cinema of figures like Malcolm LeGrice: taking one moment
and stretching it, the better to capture its nuances and to draw out
all the repressed material caught in the mise-en-scène, the
hidden, cloaked content that erupts when your world spirals out of
your control and gets caught in webs of interpersonal politic. The
move from intimacy to the capture of the "greater picture"
enacted by both lyric and music here resembles a camera dollying out,
a shift of perspective unsettling for its vertigo-inducing qualities.
Experimental deconstructionism within a pop framework that is contemplative,
well-crafted, and gracefully unsettling.

Barn Owl
From Our Mouths A Perpetual Light
PS, US Since first bearing witness to Barn Owl's mythically desolate
amplifier alchemy last year, we've been rabid fans/fanatics. But like
lots of badass bands, BO are a rolling stone, heavy on the transformation
tip, and the BO of today is an altered beast from the one that folkily
fingerpicked Bridge To The Clouds and their self-titled disc way back
when. And in case we're not being clear: this is a beautiful thing.
From Our Mouths A Perpetual Light burns with the sun-dead majesty
of a Death Valley burial ground, all wasted waterless expanse and
cracked earth smoke blowing in the dry wind. Heavy western drone revelations
bleed into forlorn guitar drift, downcast percussion plods across
the plain, a skull on its side lies in the sands. Evan Caminiti and
Jon Porras have somehow flawlessly evolved Barn Owl into a blazing
new universe, and From Our Mouths is the first mission statement from
their new spectral/aesthetic outpost, a stunning and timeless eight-song
suite of grim cinematic electricity. Tune in, drop dead, rot on. In
swank matte jackets with 'four-armed demon warrior-yogi' artwork by
the band. Edition of 435.

Barr, Brad
The Fall Apartment: Instrumental Guitar
PS, US This is guitarist Brad Barr's solo debut, The Fall Apartment:
Instrumental Guitar. As a member of Northeast-based band The Slip,
Brad's guitar prowess has always been notable, but his true gifts
and distinct musical voice are on full display throughout this solo
guitar album. A heady set of original compositions is complimented
by such diverse covers as Maria La O by legendary Cuban musician Ernesto
Lecuona, Kurt Cobain's 'Heart Shaped Box,' and Le Trio Ferret's 'Gin
Gin.' The introspective tone of the album recalls such autumnal, overlooked
loner guitar gems as Lenny Breau's Cabin Fever or Richard Crandell's
In The Flower Of Our Youth, while staking out a thoroughly modern
approach to solo guitar here in the late '00s.

Budd, Harold/Clive Wright
A Song For Lost Blossoms
PS, US A new record of ambient melody and transcendental mood portals
from minimalist/modernist master Harold Budd and friend guitarist/composer/producer
Clive Wright. A Song For Lost Blossoms nicely builds on both artists'
previous ambient work. A Song For Lost Blossoms was recorded live
and in studio at different locations including the artists' homes,
at REDCAT (Roy E. Disney Concert and Theater), Los Angeles, and Clive
Wright's Desert Sky Studio, Joshua Tree, CA. These recordings represent
the very best of Harold and Clive's work together over the period
2004 to 2006. Artist and friend Anna LaCazio reads her poem, "A
Song for Lost Blossoms", the title track. Harold Budd is recognized
as "The Godfather of Ambient Music". His works are the cornerstones
of the modern minimal and ambient canon. Clive Wright is a founding
member of the platinum selling pop/rock band Cock Robin and has worked
as writer, producer and guitarist with Human Drama, Tears for Fears
members, Montell Jordan, The Black Eyed Peas and Peter Gabriel. Budd
and Wright met as residents of the beautiful and remote Southern California
desert community of Joshua Tree. With only just a little imagination
one can easily hear the influence of the Southern California desert
environment; the sounds of its stark beauty, serene quiet and otherworldly
presence. Cover art painting by Billy Al Bengston. Mastered by Eric
Ryan, Ravenswork with similar EQ settings as Harold's classics The

Cage, John
Composition In Retrospect
PS, US 2008 reprinting, originally published in 1993. Paperback, 184
pages. "Written in his characteristic 'mesostics' (linked lines
of prose poetry), Composition In Retrospect is a statement of methodology
in which John Cage examines the central issues of his work: indeterminacy,
nonunderstanding, inconsistency, imitation, variable structure, contingency.
Finished only shortly before his death in 1992, Composition In Retrospect
completes the documentation of Cage's thought that began thirty years
earlier with his classic collection Silence. Given Cage's vigilant
attention to the present, the text can serve as an introduction and
invitation to his work as much as a summary or conclusion. Also included
in this volume (as Cage requested) is 'Themes and Variations,' a 1982
piece inspired by friends and heroes such as Jasper Johns, Buckminster
Fuller, Marcel Duchamp, and Erik Satie. Together these two works make
for a book that is both a testament to the artists Cage admired, and
a clear statement of his own ars poetica."

Cale, John
Process OST
PS, US Originally released in 2005, Process is an original soundtrack
recording by John Cale and marks the beginning of his creative relationship
with avant-garde filmmaker CS Leigh. The film, featuring Beatrice
Dalle and Guillaume Depardieu, was described by Variety as being "one
of the most adventurous works" screened at 2004's Berlinale,"
with Leigh displaying "a take-no-prisoners arthouse rigor."
With Cale being "no stranger to taking music in experimental
directions" (Rolling Stone), the coming together of director
and composer was a natural and inspired union. Leigh explains: "When
I was working on Process in the earliest stages I knew I wanted to
work with Cale. He has made groundbreaking contributions to difficult
cinema and understands the architecture of film sound better than
anyone I know. Cale gives you more than music. He gives you a sound
landscape that permeates every frame and resounds beyond the borders."
Cale's work for Process is a haunting, discordant collection of mostly
solo piano pieces, described by the Edinburgh International Film Festival
catalog as being a "menacing and incendiary score." Cale
has created a sound that perfectly compliments the radical approach
of CS Leigh, of whom Le Figaro writes: "His aesthetic sense is
taken to extremes. His incisive images disturb, shock. You cannot
stay indifferent watching Process." Continuing in this vein,
the soundtrack is at once ominous, provocative yet poignant.

in there too. Three doses of pure DIY pop pleasure, straight from

Chop Chop
Screens
PS, US Catherine Cavanagh will tell you that her reasons for making
a new album are personal and will firmly deny that the new songs are
a "response" to Christina Aguilera's latest two-disc statement.
Catherine is Chop Chop's singer, songwriter and [instrument-player].
She got help on this album from a few drunk, wayward Boston musicians
she lured into her attic studio for an occasional session. Catherine's
band mates are Chris Cupcake who plays bass, Carlos Cola XXII on drums,
and CC Moniker on guitar. "Screens" is the name of Chop
Chop's new album. Like its predecessor, the songs combine pop, rock,
and electronica, with influences ranging from the 1930s to the Bee
Gees to Run DMC. This time around, quaintly analog instruments like
the French horn, a keymonica, and a toy Zylophone have been tossed
into the mix alongside cranky, craggy digital synthesizers and electric
guitars. Screens will make you laugh, it will make you cry, it will
make you dance, it will haunt you and mysteriously force its way to
the beginning of your iPod shuffle queue.

Cloudland Canyon/Mythical Beast
Harvest Hunt
PS, US This fair pairing has been in the wings for a few years now
by our count, but tripped things come to those who wait, so better
late-as-shit than never. Cloudland Canyon have been spanning geographies
(Brooklyn, Germany, Memphis) and genres (Krautrock, drone, psych-pop)
since at least 2002, but only recently has their technological studio-sorcery
began to gather steam and affect the more far-flung populations (powered
in no small part by their partnership with Kranky Records). Anyone
who's gotten lost in CC's latest, Lie In Light, knows this duo is
currently at the pinnacle of their potency, and their offering here
('Harvest Hunt') is a fantastic mechanical motorik ascent into symphonic
hypnosis. Comparisons to classic Teutonic psych outfits of yesteryear
are warranted but inadequate: this is music of today, for tomorrow.
On the flip, beloved Not Not Fun in-laws Mythical Beast return to
the vinyl spotlight with two luminous soul meditations conjured during
the past winter's grey maze of days. Both ballads burn with Corinne's
voice-for-the-voiceless defiance, wind-draped and incensed by Jeremiah
and Aaron's subtle electric string energies. Naked music for open
spaces, empty skies, endless nights. High-audio 45 RPM LPs (NNF's

Coil/The New Blockaders/Vortex Campaign
The Melancholy Mad Tennant
PS, US Limited edition of 500 copies. Limited edition of 500 copies
on 180 gram vinyl. Originally released on cassette in 1984 and then
on cd in an edition of 500. In 1984 Vortex Campaign invited Coil and
The New Blockaders to collaborate. The result, unofficially referred
to as "Dolbied", was released on cassette in an edition
of 50. The release has since gone on to become legendary, showcasing
two of the most influential groups in the scene at the early stages
of their development. "The Melancholy Mad Tenant" is an
authorized release, sanctioned by all three groups. Formed in 1983
the output of Coil has ranged from the avant-garde, to experimental
neoclassical, to extended excursions into pure electronica. Many bands
and composers have cited Coil as an influence. Coil were mainly a
studio group, but in 2000 they commenced a successful series of tours
that proved to be extremely remarkable events. The New Blockaders
began in 1982 with the release of the debut LP "Changez Les Blockeurs"
which is cited by many as a defining moment in the history of noise
music. TNB have gone on to influence a generation of artists from
Japanese noise-maestro Merzbow to noise punks Wolf Eyes.

Collins Beat, Paul
Ribbon of Gold
PS, US Produced by Chips Kiesby (Hellacopters, Nomads) Ribbon of Gold
features 10 new songs from pop's illegitimate son, Paul Collins. After
a 12 year recording silence, Paul Collins re-surfaced with Flying
High, recorded at home with his new comrade in arms, guitar slinger
Octavio Vinck and what would become the start of his new Spanish band.
Flying High was a simple affair sporting songs that spanned Paul's
musical career and landscape, from the Beat-ish power chords of Rock
n Roll Shoes and More Than Yesterday, to the all out melodic pop of
Helen to the roots rocking Will You Be A Women the record encompasses
all the facets of Paul's writing ability, showcased with a simple
and straight forward production style.

Conifer
Crown Fire
PS, US Though Conifer has received quite a bit of critical praise
they've somehow managed to live off the grid for the past six years.
With "Crown Fire", Conifer is finally getting the exposure
they deserve. Mixing post-rock, kraut-rock, metal and pschychedlia
they have created this relentlessly driving and hypnotic masterpiece.
Crown Fire's only vocals are from Oxbow's Eugene Robinson fronting
the albums final 13 minute epic. Conifer has been writing primarily
instrumental music with a lawless take on the styles from which they've
taken cue. New content is found by way of augmenting brutality and
suspense with time. Conifer seems to reckon with the notions of bands
like Enemymine, Mogwai, or Grails while taking an approach toward
their music that's entirely meditative (as opposed to premeditated).
Minimal, ethereal passages are narcotically lengthened and crescendos
of distortion are sustained well beyond the boundaries adhered to
by many of their peers.

Cope, Julian
Copeulation
PS, UK "Issued for the first time as a DVD collection, the videos
of Julian Cope and Teardrop Explodes display some seminal moments
of genius and English pop/rock history. This collection tracks ten
years in the life of Julian Cope, through times when he burnt out,
rose again, burnt out, and then rose again -- showing why he got the
epithet 'flawed genius.' Beginning with his work as part of legendary
UK rock band The Teardrop Explodes and continuing onto his highly
successful solo career -- the DVD charts the extraordinary musical
and personal journey that Cope experienced during the period. Many
believe that he was a weirdo pretending to be normal -- but the theory
of a normal guy pretending to be sub-normal and displaying genius
is more than borne out by the contents of this DVD. These are the
complete works of an enigma." Running time: 60 mins. 5.1 Surround

Cotton Jones Basket Ride
The River Strumming
PS, US COTTON JONES BASKET RIDE is the new band fronted by singer-songwriter
Michael Nau (former frontman of PAGE FRANCE). "The River Strumming"
is a delightful slab of fuzzed-out dream folk that thumps with a musical
heartbeat in a manner not dissimilar to that of forward thinking modern-day
shamen like Will Hart and Brightblack Morning Light. This album completed
itself, so to speak, forming in pieces over a six month span while
the band was working on its debut full-length "Paranoid Cocoon"
(to be released in late 2008). Nau and company initially set out to
make a cohesive record, and made just the opposite. Some songs were
recorded on one machine in December, finished on another machine in
March, destroyed in April, then attached to another song in May. Likewise,
it fits so well with the sort of records that ST. IVES is in love
with releasing - the three-legged dogs of the world, the records that
don't quite fit elsewhere, barely even within an artist's own body
of work. "The River Strumming" is limited to 300 vinyl copies
in hand-made packaging - each LP hand-wrought (as all St. Ives releases
are) by the band itself - and is not expected to remain in stock long.

to being back in print for the first time since 2001, these reissues

(as opposed to the 2x10" format in which it debuted) and includes
4 bonus songs from a live WFMU session from 1996. "Tri Danielson!!!

Dead Confederate
Wrecking Ball
PS,US THE ONION AV CLUB: "Dead Confederate's Wrecking Ball sounds
like Bleach-era Nirvana covering My Morning Jacket. (That's a good
thing.) The Georgia band stirred up some buzz in January with its
self-titled EP, a strained, aching redefinition of roots-rock that
hinted at something bigger and better. Consider Wrecking Ball the
fulfillment of that promise: Howling with impassioned anger about
various bleak, gloomy subjects, Hardy Morris masters a musical tension
that's reminiscent of Kurt Cobain (especially on the pounding "Goner"
and frantic "Start Me Laughing"), with undeniably catchy
riffs surging through his band's noise. And while the psychedelic,
echoing alt-country guitar should appeal to early MMJ fans, Dead Confederate
is considerably more baleful and abrasive... Dead Confederate's alt-country/grunge
hybrid doesn't just feel like a compelling debut, it feels like a
compelling new genre."

PS, US The Robsoul Remixes is a cross-continental project that mines
the connections between Matthew Dear's precision techno-pop and the
French label's expansive funk. DJ Sneak engineers "Dog Days"
into an ebullient house romper. Robsoul boss Phil Weeks revives the
unforgettable disco string sweeps of the original and stretches them
tight against a crackling, frog-hiccup loop. Finally, Chris Carrier

bongo strikes and hi-hat hisses around seductive fades and vocal stutters.

Del Reys, The
Savage Instrumental
PS, US Surf, garage and big beat instrumental waycoolery featuring
Ric Menck! The California Del Reys Of The San Fernando Valley, or
simply The Del Reys, as they're known to fans, formed in 2005 over
a mutual love for rockin' instrumental music. They have been labeled
a "surf group" by the media, but don't strictly adhere to
a reverb-drenched, tidal wave of sound. Instead, the Del Reys include
elements of fuzz, garage rock, heavy British blues, 50's rock &
roll, and even country & western into their eclectic approach.
The band consists of Tony Marsico (Cruzados, Matthew Sweet, Martini
Kings), Ric Menck (Velvet Crush, Matthew Sweet, Susanna Hoffs), and
Pete Phillips (Matthew Sweet, Marianne Faithfull, Six Finger Satellite).
Their debut album was recorded on a cheap 2 track recorder because
they wanted to achieve a "trashy, primitive" sound similar
to their biggest idols, Link Wray & the Wray Men. The Del Reys
are intent on a basic, no frills approach that rocks hard, but they
also have a romantic side.

Dora Flood
Dream Out Your Window
PS, US New album from West Coast psych-dream-shoegazers. Over the
course of their 6 lps and 1 ep, the band dora flood has produced some
of the most notable shoegazing dream-pop to come out of the United
States. Their brand new effort, Dream out Your Window, is perhaps
the band's most enchanting album distilling years of psychedelic rock
and dreamy, melodic pop into an aural elixir so potent, it is sure
to leave you on Cloud 9. With praise coming from discerning music
magazines like Big Takeover, Skyscraper, Losing Today and Ptolemaic
Terrascope, it is no wonder that audiences leave their shows feeling
that they witnessed something of a secret, psychedelic phenomenon.
These live close encounters, as well as their classic studio work,
leave listeners with bold memories of pounding grooves, lush orchestration,
and melodies so timeless that they take up residence in the heads
of those fortunate enough to cross their path.

Floating Frequencies/Intuitive Synthesis Volume 3
PS, US Deluxe pressing of 500 copies packaged in letterpressed covers
designed by Important and printed by 23rd Parallel. Mastered by James
Plotkin. Hand numbered/hand assembled. Eleh's Intuitive Synthesis/Floating
Frequencies Volume 3 is the third release in their Intuitive Synthesis
series (Volume 2 was released over a year ago) and it is being released
simultaneously with an Eleh/Pauline Oliveros split release. Both are
limited edition and LP only. Meticulously minimal analog drone. Eleh
was formed to specifically to pay tribute to early experimental minimalist
pioneers especially La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Eliane Radigue, Pauline
Oliveros and Charlemagne Palestine. Using an enormous vintage modular
analog synthesizer, a battery of glowing HP tube test oscillators
and occasionally guitar/piano, Eleh creates highly minimal and deeply
spiritual pure analog drone music with emphasis on the physical ultra-low
end. Incorporating tones as low as .05 hz (well below the range of
human hearing) Eleh is as much of a physical experience as it is an
audio one. This engaging record was created as a tool for meditation

Eleh/Pauline Oliveros
Split
PS, US Eleh: The Beauty Of The Steel Skeleton Pauline Oliveros: Drifting
Depths Important Records quite pleased to be presenting this split
release consisting of two new drone works from Pauline Oliveros and
Eleh. Oliveros, an early American minimalist who has pioneered the
technique of Deep Listening, has created a new work exlcusively for
this release. Drifting Depths is a new improvised piece made on a
harmonica being processed through Pauline's Expanded Instrument System.
Eleh's side, also exclusive to this vinyl only release, is super slow
melodic drone full of stillness, tension & relief. Vinyl only,
handmade and handassembled letterpressed jackets. Limited edition.
A central figure in post-war electronic art music, Oliveros is one
of the original members of the San Francisco Tape Music Center (along
with Morton Subotnick, Ramon Sender, Terry Riley, and Anthony Martin),
which was the resource on the U.S. west coast for electronic music
during the 1960s. The Center later moved to Mills College, where she
was its first director, and is now called the Center for Contemporary
Music. Oliveros often improvises with the Expanded Instrument System,
an electronic signal processing system she designed, in her performances
and recording. Eleh was formed to specifically to pay tribute to early
experimental minimalist pioneers especially La Monte Young, Terry
Riley, Eliane Radigue, Pauline Oliveros and Charlemagne Palestine.

Ewers, Suki
Kind of Hazy
PS, UK Former member of Opal and Mazzy Star. After performing for
several years with Anemone, a band once touted as the missing link
in the country music/dream pop connection, Suki spent the last couple
of years in the studio working with Joe Kennedy on a set of nine songs.
These were eventually sent off to be mixed & masterd by Kramer.
The result is hazy, bittersweet pop in the vein of Galaxie 500 &
Felt. The songs are at once dreamy & enigmatic yet immediately
accessible. Suki manages to evoke much of the same delicately pretty
gloominess as Opal while adding her own serenely melodic warmth. "A
female-fronted The Clientele with a slightly more American brand of
melancholy." -Filter Magazine.

Fisher, Morgan
The Hybrid Kids 1+2: Two Collections of Classic Mutants
PS, UK Before Miniatures, there was Hybrid Kids. Take a collection
of classics by musical behemoths The Beatles, Kate Bush, The Sex Pistols,
The Righteous Brothers, Brotherhood Of Man and suchlike, and perform
them in a style as diametrically opposite to the original as one can
imagine. Therein lies the manifesto that brought the world the wonderfully
twisted take on pop music that is Hybrid Kids. Being the first album
recorded in Fisher s own Pipe Studios (actually his Notting Hill bedsit,
fact fans), Hybrid Kids was conceived as a compilation album featuring
a variety of spoof 'bands' hailing from the very real but somewhat
obscure Peabody (a town in Kansas, USA) each would perform their own
take on a well known number, with wildly unpredictable results. Equally
predictably, when the self styled Collection Of Classic Mutants was
announced and discussed in the press, a large number of hipsters and
music buffs believed every word and eagerly anticipated its release
Phrases such as terrifying work of genius, downright creepy and nearly
obscene were commonplace in reviews of the record, and it quickly
passed into folklore as a work of unique originality and the kind
of sonic experimentation rarely applied to such mainstream material.
A true classic a fact highlighted by the media interest in its imminent
reissue in combination with its equally intriguing sister album. So,
having caused something of a stir with a warped compilation of material
performed by non-existent acts from a far off town nobody had ever
heard of, where does one go next? The answer, in retrospect, seems
obvious the tried and tested Christmas album, performed by the self
same Hybrid Kids. Claws (released a year after its predecessor), saw
Morgan tackle such Xmas favorites as Deck The Halls, Good King Wenceslas
and Happy Xmas (War Is Over) in his own inimitable style, with equally
unorthodox results. Perhaps not one to play when Granny drops by for
her pre Xmas lunch glass of sherry, but definitely something any discerning
audio adventurer should find a few moments for amongst their festive
celebrations. Both albums are accompanied by bonus tracks and have
been retouched for 2008 by Morgan himself.

Flaherty, Paul
Aria Nativa
PS, US "Aria Nativa" is more than PAUL FLAHERTY'S third
solo saxophone album; it merges rhapsodic avant garde music, patriotic
dream verse, and mortality into a frighteningly pure work of audio,
visual and literary sledge. Recorded during a pair of 2007 performances,
its four pieces capture lifeblood in stunning detail from foot stomps
to gut hollers and crowd roars as Flaherty's free power blues dips
into the well of wretchedness and raises with fists of mirth. It's
the sorta record that splays naked the artist for all: equal parts
wise ass and universal vision. From his early 1970s woodshedding through
a dozen plus albums each with drum buddies Randall Colburne and Chris
Corsano, and collaborators Bill Nace, Wally Shoup and Sunburned Man
of the Hand, Flaherty remains a total wildcat - on and off the alto/tenor
horns. For this LP his massive tonal craft is equally matched by Ken
Hill's gorgeous cover shot of a snow blown grave and "No More
America" - Ken DelPonte's epic poem that spans nearly five decades
and fills the back jacket, framing the atmosphere the music was recorded
under. Each 500 copies contain a download coupon for MP3 version of
the album that includes a bonus track of "No More America"
read by the author.

Herrman, Bernard
Aldous Huxley's Brave New World
PS, UK Published in 1932, some 17 years before George Orwell's equally
dystopian 1984, Brave New World was prompted by Aldous Huxley¹s
visit to the United States and his shock at the all-embracing commercialization
he encountered. Set in the 26th century, the book depicts a world
in which the masses are socially engineered and subconsciously indoctrinated
for their roles in society, and kept docile and content by a combination
of drugs (Soma), promiscuous sex, synthesized Muzak and mindless entertainment
(the Feelies). Solitary pursuits such as reading are discouraged in
favor of group activities, while the nuclear family has been replaced
by the Hatcheries and Conditioning Centres that control every aspect
of the period between artificial conception and childhood. This extraordinary
musical radio production of Huxley¹s masterpiece attracted a
suitably stellar cast of performers including the author himself in
the role of narrator and the great film composer Bernard Hermann.
A titan of cinema now remembered for such undisputed masterpieces
as Citizen Kane, Psycho and Taxi Driver. Here, his palette was necessarily
constrained by budgetary considerations, but he nevertheless deployed
his slender resources - organ and percussion instruments - with typical
ingenuity. In the first part of the programme we hear eight cues of
Bernard Herrmann¹s original score followed by the original radio
production in it¹s entirety with Herrmann¹s music as broadcast
by the CBS Radio Workshop in January and February. TRACKS: 1-9: Brave

for small ensemble (featuring circus organ), as minimal & repetitive
as all rock & roll while creating a bit of curiosity and perplexity,
Howling Hex are convinced that they owe the audience something of
value for their money - Earth Junk! This album is a ramble in the
dappled sunlight of the American southwest, twisted metallic folk-art
in the ever-changing breeze, an offering to all nations.

I Heart Lung
Interoceans
PS, US On 'Interoceans", I HEART LUNG blends first-take methods
with Oblique Strategies: carefully composed, meticulously recorded
pieces rooted in improvisation, revised and augmented over time. The
results are a compelling vision of chaos and beauty as Chris Schlarb's
electric guitar drones and Tom Steck's free-jazz drumming hold and
flutter with shimmering acoustic guitars, soaring pedal steel and
beautifully captured field recordings. When Kris Tiner's trumpet follows
Nels Cline's electric sitar three minutes into "Interoceans II,"
it's like Don Cherry's loving spirit doting on universal music drones.

James
Hey Ma
PS, US New album! AMG: "Hey Ma is such an extension of the band's
signature sound that it's possible to think no time has passed at
all, yet that isn't quite accurate. Not that the band went out on
a low note, but James do sound revitalized, energized by the time
apart and, perhaps more importantly, sounding connected to the time
at hand, making music for a world in turmoil that needs more voices
of protest and hope."

Kjersem, Hilde Marie
A Killer For That Ache
PS, NORWAY This is the first solo release for Norway's singer/songwriter
Hilde Marie Kjersem. Kjersem was born and brought up in the northwest
coastal town of lesund, with seven brothers and sisters and a father
with a passion for science fiction and Kenny Rogers. Like many of
her young contemporaries in Norway, she studied at the Music Conservatory.
She has released two albums, Red Shoes Diary (2004) with her now-disbanded
TUB Quartet and Twelve O'Clock Tales (2005), a duo album of standards
with jazz guitarist Jon Eberson. The last couple of years, she has
worked on A Killer For That Ache, the first proper album under her
own name. Far from being a jazz album or your typical melancholy Nordic
singer-songwriter album, Kjersem names some of her inspirations to
be David Lynch, Roger Rabbit, Finn Graff (legendary Norwegian newspaper
illustrator), Danny Elfman, Robert Wyatt, José Saramago, Kate
Bush and Tim Burton. With her present band, including Shining main-man
Jørgen Munkeby, she has delivered some stunning performances
that have been extremely well-received in the Norwegian press. A Killer
For That Ache can be called a concept album of sorts, in the way that
Kjersem sets out to critique the media by stepping into various disguises
and characters using comments, facts, lies, repetitions, assumptions,
exaggerations, humor, irony and absurd observations on things that
might have happened, things that never happened and things that never
will. Not surprisingly, the result is an eclectic selection of songs
that are completely indescribable. Let us just say it is pop music
with many twists, making it a dramatic, beautiful, mysterious, seductive,
intricate, fascinating and unique musical ride. Hilde Marie Kjersem
(vocals, keyboards, autoharp), Jørgen Munkeby (saxophones,
clarinets, flute, guitar, vocals), Torbjørn Folke Zetterberg
(bass, guitars, banjo, Moog, Rhodes, vocals), Sjur Miljeteig (trumpet,
vocals), Peder Kjellsby (drums, percussion, piano).

Kossoff With Black Cat Bones, Paul
Paul's Blues
PS, UK This double CD contains the earliest known recordings of the
UK's Paul Kossoff (Free), whose tragic death at 25 in 1976 robbed
the rock world of one of its finest-ever blues guitarists. Taped at
rehearsals with Black Cat Bones in London in 1967, the raw, lo-fi
tracks find the teenaged Kossoff already a master of his instrument.
Accompanied by musicians including Derek and Stuart Brookes (later
to form the legendary Leaf Hound), and featuring a guest appearance
from Paul Rodgers (later to form Free with Kossoff), the recordings
are of considerable historical importance. They are released here
for the very first time, along with a booklet featuring rare photographs,
full liner notes and an introduction from the band's drummer, Frank
Perry, making the album an essential purchase for all serious rock
fans.

Lili Z
The Two Of Us
PS, US After previous achievements with Volt, The Splash Four, The
No-Talents, and her past collection of home tapes, Lili Z. comes back
with fifteen new 8-track cassette living room recordings. Twisted
into shapes that vaguely resemble seam-bursting garage punk, the songs'
(thirteen originals and reworkings with Lili Z. lyrics of a Bela Bartok
piece and an old Rondos chestnut) charm lies in their unpredictability.
Sometimes it's a little late-'70s punk rock, sometimes it's catchy,
metronome-like electropunk, sometimes it's pure guitar noise freakouts,
and sometimes it's experimental tooling around. B.ut most of all,
it's pure Lili Z., recorded at home at her most intimate.
A
sort of musical diary, The Two of Us comes with a stunning, full-color
gatefold sleeve of Lili's collages and meticulous illustrations for
each song. This vinyl edition is limited to 1000.
"Dark-sounding
but maintaining a ... playful energy, blazingly fast at times yet
with plenty of ... slow-simmer brooding and crawling. Lili's made
a better sounding record in her home than most full bands could hope
to achieve in a studio."

Louvin, Charlie
Steps To Heaven
PS, US Features 10 traditional gospel classics including 2 Louvin
Brothers songs. The release will be followed by Charlie Louvin Sings
Murder Ballads & Disaster Songs. Both albums were produced, recorded
and mixed by Mark Nevers (Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Andrew Bird, Bobby
Bare Sr.). Instead of hanging back at age 81, Charlie has instead
chosen to challenge himself. Steps To Heaven was recorded live with
a gospel choir comprised of three sisters, journeyman gospel pianist
Derrick Lee, and Chris Scruggs, adding doghouse bass and electric
guitar. Louvin had never recorded with black gospel musicians before,
and in doing so discovered a new musical path. Charlie remarks, 'I
did things on the gospel record I had no idea I could do. I'd be thinking
along the way, 'How can I do things I've never done before?' And I
did it.' 2007 saw Louvin celebrate his 80th birthday amidst a swirl
of activity around the release of his first studio album in ten years,
Charlie Louvin. Grammy-nominated for 'Best Traditional Folk Album,'
the disc features George Jones, Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, Will Oldham,
and Elvis Costello, among others. Charlie toured and recorded with
Lucinda Williams, made a video for the song 'Ira,' released a field
recording of one of his many in-store performances, Live at Shake
It Records, played over 100 concert dates sharing stages with Ryan
Adams and Neko Case, appeared on giant festivals like Bonnaroo and
Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, and placed a medallion around Emmylou Harris'
neck inducting her into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Charlie's
self-titled album earned 4 out of 5 stars in Uncut and MOJO magazines,
and sparked a bevy of great press and renewed interest in his fascinating
career.

Mancini, Henry
The Versatile Henry Mancini
PS, UK Henry Mancini s first album, a languid and vastly superior
piece of exotica initially released in 1957 as Driftwood and Dreams
re-issued here for the first time on compact disc in both stereo and
the original beautiful mono version. For these historic sessions,
Mancini recruited the renowned Brazilian guitarist Laurindo Almeida,
to bring a distinctly tropical feel that would have been beyond the
reach of even the most seasoned American player and to add a crucial
touch of the other-worldly, the soprano Loulie "Lulu" Jean
Norman, whose wordless vocals would later achieve global recognition
on the theme from Star Trek. Donald Fagen called Henry Mancini the
"High Priest of Hollywood Cool", and this masterful album
is full of stylish Mancini motifs that anticipate such future triumphs
as Moon River, Baby Elephant Walk, The Days of Wine and Roses, The
Pink Panther and The Party. High quality bonus material includes The
Four Freshmen's exquisite recording Mancini s What s It Gonna Be,
written for the film Rock, Pretty Baby, the rare Mancini single of
instrumental material from the same movie, Hot Rod and Big Band Rock
and Roll, and another Hank composition Cha Cha Cha for Gia from Four

Maniac's Dream
Zanzibar
PS, US Finland is the epicenter of collective music-making. Under
the name Maniac's Dream, members of a variety of Finnish bands such
as Avarus, Fricara Pacchu, Kemialliset Ystävät, and more
come together to create blown-out free rock (not your typical stoner
guitar jams). Their unique/bizarre approach to music-making constantly
questioning the construction/deconstruction of sound creates songs
at times recalling the electro-acoustic clatter drone of Avarus crossed
with tribal rhythms and intergalactic guitar zones. Total sonic freedom
with a punk ethos directly influenced by a trip to Zanzibar prior
to recording this record (which is a reissue of the long sold-out
tape originally released on Lal Lal Lal in 2006). In an edition of
450 records on light blue vinyl with printed labels and full color
pro-printed fold-over sleeves with art by Benjamin Bergman and an

Marmoset
Record In Red
PS, US MARMOSET'S "Record In Red" is full of apples and
cherries. With this, their second full-length, Marmoset have released
a near masterwork of pop pleasure. Indeed, the 13 songs on "Record
In Red" vary widely in style and sound, ranging from the Church-like
acoustic stylings of "Golden Cloak" and "Torn Cup,
Fly Up Above", the FAITH-era Cure tone of "Walking Thru
The Lake", the moody pop melodies resembling Richard Davies'
work with the Moles, the haunting confessional of "December 4th",
the epic dementia of "Summertime Is Easy", to the Kim Deal
inspired "Frendamine". Every song is decidedly different
than the one before, but the album hangs together with a neurotic
thread so fine that it's completely invisible to the gallery.

Michna
Magic Monday
PS, US Adrian Michna found his way as a DJ under his EGG FOO YOUNG
alias, earning him an URB "Next 100" nod in the process.
Production gigs for Bonde do Role & Diplo followed, allowing Michna
to put his deftness at both the drum machine & the trombone to
good use, creating tracks out of dense blankets of sound & texture.
Apart from the tightly woven musical amalgam of hip-hop, booty &
electro, it's the detailed process that makes Michna's debut album
move. Perhaps the most exciting aspect of the album is its rich element
of musicality; in an era when hip-hop tracks have devolved into two-note
keyboard loops, songs like "Skunk Walk" live up to their
name with full-bodied funk & live horns. When Ghostly owner, Sam
Valenti IV, asked Adrian which samples to clear, Adrian replied, "What

luscious romance. Combining beats, samples, guitars, strings &
the most silken falsetto voice since prime-time Smokey Robinson, the
third Milosh album iii takes the listener on an emotional journey
through an exquisitely beautiful musical landscape. The tracks on
iii combine the best of both Milosh's cerebral electronica & soulful
singer-songwriter sides, stirring deep emotions with lush arrangements,
honeyed vocals & delicately deconstructed beats. From the softly
weeping strings of "Another Day" to the weightless, airy
melancholy of "Gentle Samui," many of these tracks come
in various shades of blue.
