Battles
Mirrored
PS, US A complete eclipse of their earlier work, this embodies all
the prior ideas & qualities that have surrounded the group &
extrapolates exponentially upon them. The fractured rhythms, crystalline
staccato guitar lines & throttling drums still remain. New textures
& horizons become attainable through the addition of vocals courtesy
of Tyondai Braxton. PREFIX MAGAZINE: "The members of Battles
have been building a name for themselves by teasing music fans with
a string of EPs. Mirrored is their much-anticipated debut full-length.
The band's members have interesting pasts. Drummer John Stanier pounded
the skins for Helmet and Tomahawk. Ian Williams played keyboards in
Pittsburgh's Don Caballero. Dave Konopka was in the band Lynx. And
lead singer Tyondai Braxton's father was an avant-garde jazz musician.
Early buzz calls Mirrored quintessential man-machine music and possibly
one of 2007's best albums."

Bergraven
Dödsvisioner
PS, US Bergraven turns the traditional blast-and-flay aesthetic of
"frost bitten grimness" on its ear and comes at you with
sweeping riff dirges, winding cinematic passages, melodic guitar interludes,
tortured-yet-vaguely authoritarian and Germanic vocal overtones and
- get this - ambient pedal steel excursions. All of which is enough
to make your head spin, especially if you're down with weirdness.

Big John Greer
I'm The Fat Man
PS, US Big John Greer...what a man! Starting off as a key member of
Lucky Millinder's legendary band, the Big Man was soon blowing hot
sax on a succession of salty, saucy, sexy hits, as rockin' as they
were risqué. As well as playing with Millinder, Bullmoose Jackson
and others of the most out-there aggregations of the time - Big John
was really the daddy of them all: just listen and you will hear! This
is a must for all fans of rockin' sax honkin' risqué R&B.
The success of our series of these on radio, with such knowledgeable
and tasteful DJs as Mark Lamarr, I think speaks eloquently for itself...

Bronx Cheer
Was Here
PS, UK Why should you buy this record ? I'll tell you why because
Bronx Cheer are the happiest group in town. They make Mungo Jerry
sound like manic depressives. The group are a left over from the fifties,
gospellers of the good times. Basically a jug band, Bronx Cheer also
have an irresistible brand of acoustic rock and roll. There's a touch
of John Sebastian, a streak of Nilsson, a soupcon of the Temperance
Seven. Formed originally in the early 1960's as The Jug Trust this
band played the then lively folk club circuit. With writers Brian
Cookman and John Reed in the band they were self-sufficient and released
two singles through Parlophone. Changing their name to Bronx Cheer
in 1968 they then hooked up with producer Barry Murray who doubled
as A&R producer for Pye's Dawn label. So in 1969 Bronx Cheer became
beneficiaries of one of the labels 4 track maxi-single's, headed by
Barrelhouse Player . A song title perfectly describing Bronx Cheer's
musical leanings. Murray then produced the Cheers' first LP entitled
Greatest Hits Volume 3. Sadly this was not prophetic and the Cheer
were rather eclipsed by label mates and fellow Murray signed/produced
artist Mungo Jerry. Bronx Cheer LP The album didn't make the charts
but there was enough interest at the time to record a second LP, although
politics were left it on the shelf. Thus those tracks receive their
first airing here, and they are even more dynamic than the first LP!

Cam, Philipe
Balance
PS, GERMANY Philipe Cam is a star in his own field. He is among the
few people that have succeeded to write hypnotic dance music without
a conventional beat still conveying a thrilling, dramatic feel. Cam
has developed an accurate, intense and complex formula of modulation-techno.
Starting with music similar to Pan Sonic in 1996, his music turned
towards a more elegant form of minimal music. He worked as a DJ in
Brussels beginning of the 90s. Then chose to become a sailor and cruised
the oceans. Mid of the 90ies he started to study electronic music
in Brussels and began to write music for theatre, ballet and French
movies. Abstract soundtracks lead to an organic form of music, which
was equally influenced by modern techno as Wolfgang Voigt's Studio
1/Gas or Basic Channel/Maurizio. His demo received by the Cologne
based label Traum in 1999 led to a series of three fantastic 12"s.
Since then journalists have made links also to Manuel Göttsching's
classical masterpiece E2-E4 referring to his low evolving modular
wave scapes and strong repetitiveness. Cam's latest compilation CD
Balance on Traum is a fine selection of tracks previously released
as Traum 12" s. This CD contains tracks in full length, plus
a video of 'Mixte' by Cologne artist Yvette Klein, who thickly textured
the music with a minimal aesthetic. Cam's music corresponds heavily
to the Cologne scene, where his music is appreciated and played throughout
the clubs by the likes of Michael Mayer, Tobias Thomas and various
other DJs as well as experimental djs from the A-musik corner.

Deep Cut
Commodity
PS, US This is the first in a brand new series of singles called As
& When by London live night/record label Club AC30. Deep Cut is
a new band with some pedigree making noise around London at the moment,
consisting of vocalist Emma Bailey, guitarist Mat Flint and bassist
Simon Flint. Mat Flint was founder member of early 90's Virgin/Hut
band Revolver, and has played bass in Death In Vegas for ten years.
Mat was also resident DJ at Heavenly Social for four years. This first
single has been produced by Tim Holmes from Death In Vegas. 'Commodity'
is indie pop at its best: Strawberry Switchblade meets Jesus &
Mary Chain, maybe a bit of Lush in there, or even Curve. Fuzzy laid
back guitars and glacial vocals, 21st century Motown resplendent with
thumping drum licks and guitars pilled up to the eyeballs.

of 'Do You Need Help'. Dextro's varied repertoire of downtempo loveliness,
edgy punk funk and broken beats was previously given an airing on
a recent EP for the UK's Jumblefunk, and he can count none other than
Ulrich Schnauss amongst his fans. A remix from the label's resident
lunatics The MFA takes the beautiful original to the dancefloor, a

are currently turning the heads of people from all areas of the musical

Dog Day
Night Group
PS, US In many ways a pop group's success hinges on their ability
to write memorable songs. DOG DAY'S "Night Group" not only
delivers in this sense, but also shows how simple tunes can convey
meaning, beauty, and honesty. From the playful intro "Lydia",
named after keyboardist CRYSTAL THILI and drummer KC SPIDLE'S fanatical
cat, to the sorrowful "Bright Light", a song about fate
and last chances, the album moves through a broad range of content
and mood. In the tradition of great pop bands, Dog Day keeps it simple
on "Night Group." They are not a band who distracts by over-indulging
or showing off. The beats pound straight through, the keyboard plays
one well chosen note at a time, the guitars and bass follow suit.
But unlike the countless bands toting incompetence as a selling point,
Dog Day demonstrates mastery by playing tight and aggressive, taunting
us at times with their understated abilities on tracks like "Vow",
which plays with timing, starts, stops, and meanders. This album consistently
makes the point that minimalism can be a compositional choice, not
a foregone conclusion.

Drei Farben House
Any Kind of Feeling
PS, GERMANY Drei Farben House is a pop-house project by Hamburg-based
producer Michael Siegle. Following his 12" release on Force Tracks,
with a stunning Unai remix, Michael Siegle is ready to take off. His
first album Any Kind of Feeling continues the Force Tracks series
of first class albums: digital disco for pop lovers. Not unlike Swedish
producer Unai, this album conveys the desire for sensation and emotion
in music. Siegle strips house down to its basic elements. The stuttering
synth-disco groove picks up the extraordinary moments of late disco
sound. And Siegle adds the key elements of pop music, drastic harmonies
and bittersweet melodies combined with jumbled-sounding guitar riffs.
Siegle's voice is a perfect supplement to the music, a very neutral
voice -- dry and distinct. With only a few pure elements, Siegle creates
the atmosphere of a very melancholic autumn night. It's the imagination
of resignation, but also a yearning for something, which cannot be
articulated. An album of full-blooded melodrama.

E*Vax/B.Fleischmann
Postcards v.1 SPLIT
PS,US Austrian native B. Fleishmann and American artist E*vax both
have a knack for fusing abstract experimental electronics with pristine
and wistful melodies. B. Fleischmann's track is unmistakably his;
a slow motion beat lays the foundation before bringing in a rolling
mellow organ, and fuzzy clicky bits like memories of sunny days past.
The E*vax track shuffles in with arpegiating tones, and sparse complex
beats, setting a delicate mood before tearing the song structure apart
(think Takemura perhaps?) and reconfiguring it as a new functioning
pop melody. We thought B. Fleischmann and E*vax was also the perfect
way to kick of a new series of split 7"s, putting together artists
from other ends of the globe who create experimental electronics as
forward thinking textural pop. Each 7" will come packaged sharply
on clear vinyl, in a clear vinyl sleeve, with a full color postcard.

Eulberg, Dominik
Heimische Gefilde
PS, GERMANY This is the second full-length release from Bonn-based
DJ, producer and park ranger, Dominik Eulberg. For four years, Eulberg
has been releasing on his home label, Traum. His previous nine 12"s,
his Nathan Fake and Cosmic Sandwich remixes and, of course, his debut
album Flora & Fauna have made him quite a hotbed of music, which
has led to international praise for his unique brand of "wild
life techno." The influence of nature (bird twitters, owl hoots,
flowing water, crunching leaves) and other domestic sounds has made
his music easy to identify with. "Heimische gefilde" means
"native habitat," and this release takes the concept of
his debut a step further and at the same time is a retrospective of
his major hits. Tracks like "Die Rotbauchunken vom Tegernsee"
and "Björn Borkenkäfer" are included here in unreleased
edits that are even stronger than the originals, and as a bonus, previously
vinyl-only track "Der Alpenstrandläufer von Spiekeroog"
is now included on CD for the first time. Dominik Eulberg's music
is much more than just a straight bass drum enriched with samples.
Heimische Gefilde fully realizes Eulberg's pledge to mend contradictory
parts of a whole: every track is presented, each animal is introduced
by Dominik expressed in a lyrical, almost poetic form, ala old school
National Geographic narrator. The album culminates in "Stelldichein
des Westerwälder Vogelchores," a track that is definitely
techno, but techno that is roused to life through its protagonists:
100% birds only, with no effects or additives. The first "acoustic"
techno track ever. Synth-stabbed pure dance numbers are folded into
introspective floor-throbbers so that each song is a wholly different
animal all its own. Heimische Gefilde is danceable and natural: get
out your field glasses.

Fennesz
Live in Japan
PS, US The Autofact release of Live In Japan by Christian Fennesz
marks the album's debut on vinyl. Originally released in 2003 as a
Japan-only CD (Headz/Touch), Live In Japan is perhaps the definitive
live document of electronic-acoustic improvisation for our time. Hailed
by many to be the "greatest laptop live show in music history"
and counted among the albums of the year by The Wire in 2003, one
would perhaps have to go back as far as Kraftwerk to find a live electronic
performance as engaging, organic and inventive as Live In Japan. The
LP consists of one sublimely beautiful and haunting 43-minute long
track, recorded live at the Shibuya Nest, Tokyo in February of 2003.
The performance takes us from the bright codeine pop of Endless Summer
to the grand & stately melancholy of Venice, with familiar bits
of coda and electronic soul hooks catching us as we stream through
the lush, nearly symphonic drones and soundscapes which Fennesz has
expertly composed to guide us through his musical legacy. This is
that rare piece of music which affects both the ardent champion and
the novice alike, moving and original, with not a single note wasted
and nothing out of place. Guitar music? Laptop music? Post-modern
electronic soul music? Fennesz music. Mastered directly to metal at
Abbey Road Studios, London. Limited edition of 1,000 copies pressed
on heavyweight black vinyl and housed in a deluxe spot printed sleeve.

of their recording career (then as the Jackson Harmoneers) in 1945.
They sang up a storm around the southern states of the USA through
the 1950's, having signed with Peacock Records in 1950, and from their
eight singles for the label yielded an R&B chart hit with Our
Father in 1950. Two of the Blind Boys' LPs for Peacock, 'Precious
Memories' and 'Father I Stretch My Hands to Thee' are combined for
this re-issue, having been collectors' items for many years. The dynamic
call-and-response vocals, laced with Brownlee's searing screams which
would influence countless soul singers, served to inspire their audiences
through the decade. Features two very rare golden age gospel LPs:
reissued and on CD for the first time.

Flowerpot Men
Listen To The Flowers Grow
PS, UK On the 40th Anniversary of the summer of love and flower power
classic Lets Go To San Francisco we present the story behind the song
and the group. An interesting story unfolds as the studio recordings
of John Carter and team take on a life as a real band, which brought
in a further crop of outstanding performers. We begin with the build
up pre- .San Francisco songs by group members such as Neil Landon,
John Carter, Russ Alquist, through the "Rain Rain Rain"
recording which used the Mellotron to such great effect and prefaced
its later use by Carter on the hit just a couple of months later,
onto the hit, and the various attempts at a follow up using different
artist names. The subsequent live group was led by vocalist Tony Burrows,
but at times included future Deep Purple members Jon Lord and Nick
Simper in the backing band. Our sleeve notes have new interviews with
most of the writers and artists involved talking of their experiences
with the group. Previously unreleased tracks, alternate versions,
original mono versions, tracks unreleased at the time, all combine
to make this a collectors gem, and a totally worthy celebration of
the 40th anniversary. What's The Matter Juliet / Waiting Here For

Dance member, and visual artist, BRIAN DEGRAW. "Retina Riddim"
is by no means a tour film, documentary, live video, or anything as
remotely stringent. Included on the DVD is a fan film, GGDbyOP, shot
and edited on the road by OLIVER PAYNE, a friend of the band's. As
an added bonus "Retina Riddim" also contains an audio CD
cut together by Degraw specifically for this release, and a fold-out

Great Northern
Trading Twilight for Daylight
PS, US Trading Twilight for Daylight is a collection of shimmeringly
lovely yet wildly contrasting shades of the pop song experience. Densely
layered melodies are draped with dual co-ed vocalists' signature velvety
chimes, stately piano, luxuriant keyboard string flourishes and smartly
counterpointed electric and acoustic guitars. The songs very point
often seem to suggest the rich emotional textures of a daydream afternoon,
as sunshine gently dims into the dark. The sensual fullness of the
sound is like soaking in a bath of warm frequencies. Great Northern
songs are genuinely, memorably melodic, and it's the several coatings
of so many melodies within each track that makes them something to
return to again and again.

Hacke, Oliver
Subject Carrier
PS, GERMANY Trapez is happy to release the first album of Oliver Hacke.
An album is full of new tracks and different styles. From the shuffle
to the straight, from the funky to polar driven atmospheric tracks
which he is also famous for. Releasing on Trapez and its sublabels
as well as on the domestic label background, the Duesseldorf based
Oliver Hacke has so far not delivered a clear picture of himself.
Who is the man that gave us Polar 1, the walking bass epics on the
'Clip' EP, 'Der Vampir von Duesseldorf' or his fantastic remix on
Akufen's 'Psychometry iii'. The album makes an attempt to give answers
to that question. With subject carrier, Oliver Hacke, who is very
much interested in contemporary electronic music, pays tribute to
revolutionary development in techno and house during the last 5 years,
fusing it with his own ideas of sound design/mastering and dynamics.
Influenced by artists such as: Cristian Vogel, Neil Landstrumm, as
well as Herbert and Thomas Brinkmann, he has added an universal but
individual flavor to this album. Subject Carrier is not a mere collection
of music collected over the years, but has been recorded for this
occasion.

Plague Park
PS, US New Sub-Pop combo formed by Wolf Parade's Dan Boeckner and
his fiancee, Alexei Perry. Sub-Pop says: "dark and minimal and
catchy as shit", but then they also said all this: The point
of this duo was to be as sparse and repetitive as possible with the
help of little more than vocals, guitars, and a drum machine. Disenchanted
vocals thinly resonate while cloaked in a frenzied undertone of fear
and uncertainty, all punctuated by bare drum machine beats. Their
debut is a record of melancholic tendency and heartfelt desire; a
stripped down symphony relegated between city and country, and made
for ears of either side.

Jeremy Jay
Dreamland
PS, US JEREMY JAY lives in Angel Town. He plays the piano and sits
out on his deck late at night and looks over the rooftops. Inspired
by the cinema, his new record "Dreamland" is quite a unique
record for him. A more experimental & classical record, this music
was originally created as a "musik-movie", a soundtrack
for a short film starring Jeremy Jay also called "Dreamland".
While Jeremy is best known for his Buddy Holly-esque pop musings,
"Dreamland" is a departure in that it is moody instrumental
music composed on and for the keyboard, and feels like an Angelo Badalamenti
score to a film by John Hughes. This ST. IVES release is in a HANDMADE
EDITION OF 300. The artwork for the LP is a Jeremy Jay paper doll
set. There are two different paper doll sets for two different cover
styles. Each LP is unique & hand-wrought. Of course you could

Ladyhawk
Fight For Anarchy
PS, US Life is full of ups and downs. Sometimes you get up just to
get down again. Sometimes you run just to feel the wind against your
face, and sometimes you stand still to watch things crumble around
you. Vancouver's LADYHAWK knows this. And they got up - way up - and
entered a recording studio for a daylong session between tours in
the first half of 2006. Perhaps they then soared too close to the
sun, like moths drawn into the flame, only to fly again into the shadows,
their wings singed. And then maybe, gathering their burned and broken
instruments about them, they limped their way home, rearranging the
pieces and sounds haphazardly, letting them all lay as they fell.
The end result is the sound of four brothers breaking something down
to create something new, reaching into the fire again. It is a shattering
6-song march called "Fight For Anarchy", all unmuzzled and
jawing out, nothing edited or expunged. And on it Ladyhawk show that,
like SPOON, DINOSAUR JR. or TOM WAITS, they have the ability to conjure
growls, snarls, and storms of sound into musical lightning, never
striking the same place twice.

Lewis, Wyndham
The Enemy Speaks
PS, UK The first CD audiobook of readings by Percy Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957),
the influential British modernist writer, artist and self-styled 'Enemy'
feted both by T.S. Eliot and Mark E. Smith. Lewis is best known as
the founder in 1914 of the celebrated Vorticist art movement, an English
variant of Italian Futurism. Publication of their journal Blast was
interrupted by WW1, after which Lewis the artist pursued a parallel
career as a writer of fiction, satire and criticism. Lewis spent the
war years 1939-45 in penniless exile in America , yet carried on writing
even after going blind in 1951. His many books include Tarr (1918),
The Apes of God (1930), Blasting & Bombardiering (1937), The Revenge
for Love (1937) and the trilogy The Human Age. His artworks include
Workshop (1913), A Battery Shelled (1919), Tyro (1920) Red Portrait
(1937), The Surrender of Barcelona (1937) and Portrait of T.S. Eliot
(1938), and are regularly exhibited by galleries including the Tate,
Hayward, Imperial War Museum and others. The Enemy Speaks gathers
together rare broadcast recordings made by Lewis in 1938, 1947 and
1951 on various subjects in art and politics, as well as readings
of three poems from One-Way Song, recorded at Harvard in 1940. The
CD also features a dramatized extract from his Bloomsbury-baiting
satire The Apes of God, recorded in 1951 with an introduction by the
critic V.S. Pritchett. The CD closes with the recording of Sympathy
that so vexed Lieutenant Lewis in his dug-out near Ypres in 1917.
The CD features a deluxe booklet featuring archive Lewis images as
well as historical notes by James Hayward. The CD has been prepared
with the full co-operation of the Wyndham Lewis Memorial Trust.

Life on Earth!
Look!! There is Life on Earth!
PS, SWEDEN Even more psychedelic than Dungen, and sung in English...
Life on Earth! is the solo-work of talented multi-instrumentalist
Mattias Gustavsson, from the Swedish band Dungen. Together with some
fellow travelling kindred musical spirits (musicians from Dungen,
The Works, Town & Country and Mia Doi Todd), he has created an
amazingly deep and timeless album filled with shimmering vibrant psychedelic
folk-rock-pop. The basic idea was to make music that celebrates the
incredible and absolutely wonderful phenomenon of life on Earth, hoping
to spread some joy to any possible listeners. The project has been
going on since 2003. Barefoot on tiptoe, in a bubble of magic, swirling
elegantly among the stars. Here's life on earth according to Life
On Earth!: "Right in between, both after and before, nobody really
knows where we came from or where we are going ... Suddenly one is
cut off from one's past, intruded on by the present, without a clue
of what to say or what to do about anything. But where ever we may
go, it is all one and the same anyway. Why not simply enjoy it, until
the day we die? So lay all your worry aside now. Don't hesitate; let
your dreams sweep you away. Then you may see everything that's forgotten
here. Lean back and feel how light and exquisite you truly are. Wonder
at the beauty of nature; listen to how it invites you among beech
trees and squirrels. Embrace it, because he and she and it and we
are all connected to you and you are just like everything else, constantly
changing into wondrous beings yet unseen -- you might watch the life
on Earth for inspiration." Got it? In other words, absolutely
joyful, wondrous, swirling Swedish psych-folk loveliness. Sparkling
acoustic singer-songwriter sing-a-longs, acid-drenched guitar burners,
spacey vocals, Moog whines, sitar-drone, psych-flute trill, bongos,
echoes, some dreamy backwards-masking, and even some songs in English!
More pared down (but no less thrilling) than Dungen, with its hands
and feet on the warm rocks beside the river.

Goodbye East, Goodbye West
PS, US "Goodbye East, Goodbye West" is a refinement and
growth of the MADAGASCAR'S unique sound. Each track uses crisscrossing
accordion, saw, and glockenspiel melodies; anchored by bass, acoustic
guitar, and percussion. These instrumental elements are perfectly
punctuated with beautiful wordless vocals. From playful waltzes and
clanky dirges, to minimalist scrapes and drones, to their arrangement
of the Chanukah staple "S'vivon," Goodbye East, Goodbye

Makoto, Kawabata
Hosana Mantra
PS, US Inspired by Popol Vuh and originally released in a tiny pressing
of 550 on vinyl from the inimitable Acid Mothers Temple front man.
Licensed from A Silent Place. Included on this cd reissue are the
bonus tracks from the even more limited 7" included with 100
copies of the original LP. Guitarist, violinist, performer on numerous
traditional instruments, composer, leader of the Acid Mothers Temple,
Kawabata Makoto expresses in this solo performance all his mantric
cosmical vocations and spins them into space sonorities! He took inspiration
from the Popol Vuh album of the seventies Hosianna Mantra, during
his visit to A Silent Place headquarters in late Winter 2006. In a
sunny Sunday noon spent in the country-side, eating and drinking Apulian
specialities and listening to some great experimental records, Makoto
and his Italian friends Pierpaolo and Pasquale, took the decision
to start this cooperation. A few days later, back in Japan, Makoto
recorded the Hosanna Mantra album at the Acid Mothers Temple between
March 12th and 13th, using electric guitar, bouzouki and sitar. The
result is this new fantastic sound coming from the cosmos. A simple
gem of crystalline beauty."Music, for me, is neither something
that I create, nor a form of self-expression. All kinds of sounds
exist everywhere around us, and my performances solely consist of
picking up these sounds, like a radio tuner, and playing them so that
people can hear them. However, maybe because my reception is somewhat
off, I am unable to perfectly reproduce these sounds. That is why
I spend my days rehearsing. Where do these sounds come from? Who is
sending them out? That is not something for me to know, and neither
is there any way that I could find out. I simply believe that they
come from the 'cosmos'. (Maybe other people would call God the source).
Since I was a small child I have been prone to hearing ringing sounds
in my ears and other sound phantasms. At the time, I believed that
these were messages aimed directly at me from a UFO, and so I would
gaze up at the sky. But once I started playing music myself, I came
to feel that these noises were a kind of pure sound. And I promised
myself that one day I would be able to play those sounds myself. It
is only recently that I have begun to feel that I have been able to
come close to reproducing these sounds in my solo guitar work, and
in my INUI project. However, in June of 1999, I finally discovered
my own 'cosmos' and I experienced an instant of total union with it!!
That 'cosmos' is still tiny in size - although any cosmos can, by
its very nature, be infinitely huge or infinitely small. The energy
and vibrations contained within that it far exceeded my imagination
in scope and beauty. I can only describe the miraculous instant when
my 'cosmos' accepted my consciousness as MAGIC." Kawabata Makoto

Malone, Jena and Her Bloodstains
Tested Dry/Greeneyed Monster
PS, US The debut release from JENA MALONE AND HER BLOODSTAINS. You
might know Jena from her other career acting in film and TV (who could
forget her as the little girl on Santa's lap on Roseanne) but she
has now embarked on a different artistic endeavor. Her personal songs
are delicate, but also have the elan of someone exploring a musical
world with only a rough map. Part of the enchantment is where they
end up.

Miss Dinky
Melodias Venenosas
PS, GERMANY Chile born Miss Dinky stems from a circle of talented
musicians in Santiago De Chile, including Riccardo Villalobos (Playhouse/Perlon)
and Dandy Jack aka Martin Schopf. Miss Dinky aka Alejandra Iglesias
moved to N.Y.C. in 1996 to stay contemporary but was very much inspired
by a trip to Berlin 1995 where she met DJ Hell, Robert Görl and
Stacy Pullen she soon became resident in one of New Yorks most crowded
gay clubs, the 'Flamingo East'. The breakthrough came after she founded
a DJ collective in N.Y.C. with three other female DJs, the 'Angels
On Vinyl'. She ended up playing everywhere: The Limelight, Tunnel,
The Cooler, Soundfactory, 21's, Drinkland and during the Transmat
tour with Derrick May and Aril Brinkha. Her work as a DJ also included
gigs with Khan, John Selway, DJ Silver as well as Adam X. Her first
CD includes her ambient tracks tracks as well as her dance tracks
with many previously unreleased tracks. Many of the exotic sound have
collected through her DJ travels in Latin America. Her music can be
described as melodic and emotional, deep and rhythmic. Influences
have been Christian Vogel, Basic Chennel, Carl Craig, Derrick May
etc. and she certainly loves the early period of clonks and bleeps
as one can feel throughout her music.

Nadadora
Hablaremos Del Miedo
PS, US Nadadora's second album is bound to establish them as one of
the most important bands in the Spanish independent scene. Their career
has been on the up from the beginning, and after two records (mini
CD "Aventuras dentro de cajas", 2004, and "Todo el
frío del mundo", 2005) their popularity has grown enormously
among fans. The 10 songs in "Hablaremos del miedo" will
no doubt confirm all the expectations. In their new album Nadadora
have managed to refine their style - the songs sound more sparkling
and the emotions are more intensely transmitted. The solid foundation
of the guitars is still present, as are the breathtaking beat changes
which have made this band so singular. Among all this we find melancholy
and tranquil moments in which Sara and Gonzalo's vocals duet masterfully.
The result is a record with sharpness and balance, two characteristics
which give the listener a broader perception of Gonzalo Abalo's new
compositions and a better understanding of the band's spirit. A more
mature set of lyrics completes this brilliant picture. "Hablaremos
de miedo" is the band's most ambitious take on the various paths
of pop and rock and the way they handle them to sculpt their very
own sound. Variety is one of the staples of this record, and the band
show their improving skills in songwriting, as they move further away
from the formula of previous installments: instead of the usual bunch
of hit-singles that made up the backbone of their past records, on
"Hablaremos de miedo" we do find them too ("Tú
y cuántos como tú", "El bosque", "La
forma" or "Frágil") but we also are presented
with grower songs such as "Después de todo", "Al
final (todo arde)" or "La electricidad en el hueso".
Plus, as usual, the indispensable song in Galician ("Todo o mundo
protesta") and the album closer, a duet performed by Sara and
singer Aldo Linares. "Hablaremos de miedo" features another
great improvement - it features all sorts of wind, brass and string
arrangements, which stress the epic tone of many of the songs and
put Nadadora in the same league as bands such as The Delgados o Stars.
Such new arrangements, which they plan to feature onstage, will surely
enhance the already hymn-like characteristics of their live act, as
proved in many of their succesful concerts such as FIB 2006, Contempopranea
2005, El Sol (Madrid) 2006 or La Fabrica de Chocolate (Vigo) 2006.
The songs on "Hablaremos de miedo" were recorded at the
Circulo Polar studio, situated in O Grove, Galicia, and were mastered
in New York (West West Side Music) by Alan Douches, whose mastering
jobs include the likes of Sufjan Stevens, Antony and the Johnsons,
Galaxie 500, Beirut, Radio 4 or Damon & Naomi.

National
Boxer
PS, US The way we hear it, if you're a fan of New Ruins you'll love
these guys, and as far as compatisons to their past work it's definitely
more like "Sad Songs" than "Alligator", intimate
and subtle... The follow-up to 2005's Alligator is filled with lush
arrangements and sees the band incorporating new instrumentation and
expanded musical elements such as piano, trumpet, and more prominent
background vocals. Features guest appearances by Doveman, Vincent
Moon, Marla Hansen, and Sufjan Stevens? PITCHFORK (8.6): "It's
a testament to the good will engendered by Alligator that fans are
now likewise calling the National's follow-up, Boxer, a grower. Despite
the scrutiny greeting its release (brought on by the inevitable leaks),
many listeners seem to be approaching these songs patiently, giving
Boxer the space and time to reveal its dark, asymmetrical passageways.
In a sense, the album demands it. The same elements that kept listeners
returning to Alligator (Berninger's clever turns of phrase, the band's
dramatic intensity) are present on Boxer, but are now more restrained
and controlled."

Piano Magic
Part Monster
PS, US 7th "proper" album from esoteric Anglo-French, London-based
"ghost-rock" group that ranges from brittle folkish introspection
to dynamic all-out noise intensity. Produced by Guy Fixsen of Laika
(engineer to the likes of My Bloody Valentine, The Pixies, The Breeders,
Stereolab). Part-Monster, Piano Magic's 7th "proper" album
(excluding compilations) easily lives up to it's title. Though Piano
Magic are generally tarred with the brushes of "ambient,"
"coldwave" or even "ghostrock," Part-Monster has
it's fill of all-out, near brutal, dynamic intensity. Indeed, anyone
who's witnessed PM live over the past 2 years or so will testify that
the shadowy introspection of their records is camouflage for a beast
of many teeth. Bringing in Guy Fixsen, of the group, Laika, as producer,
clearly marked the band's intention for a rawer, more powerful sound.
Fixsen has taken the production and/or engineer chair for such luminaries
as The Pixies, Moonshake, The Breeders, Joy Zipper, Stereolab, Lush
and most notably for My Bloody Valentine's Loveless. That's not to
say that Piano Magic have entirely turned the amps up to 11. Part-Monster
gracefully manages to balance this cathartic noise with romantic paeans
to their favourite subject - the more cruel, tragic side of their
home city, London and most notably tips a hat to perhaps the most
graceful of it's outcasts, Joseph Carey Merrick (The Elephant Man).
In this, the 10th year of their existence, Piano Magic can look back
on a varied and accomplished discography most bands wouldn't manage
in a lifetime of trying. Records for 4AD, Darla, Morr Music, Important
and many more, mark their way, as well as the soundtrack to Bigas
Luna's Son De Mar movie (2001) and performances at some of the biggest
festivals in Europe (Benicassim, Primavera, BAM). Though based in
London, Piano Magic is a living model of the Entente Cordiale - 3
of it's 5 members are French (6, if you include regular chanteuse,
Angele). Even so, since it's conception, in 1996, the group has drunk
heavily from the glass of British musical inspiration - most notably,
The Smiths, Joy Division, New Order, as well as the selective 80's
output of 4AD, Factory and Rough Trade Records. Though they operate
somewhat beneath the radar in a fashion-obsessed Britain, Piano Magic
have amassed a huge, devout following in Europe and regularly tour
the likes of France, Spain, Italy to sold-out halls. Though the group
is their main obsession, singer Glen Johnson also maintains a solo
project of leftfield electronica under the guise of Textile Ranch
(album, Bird Heart In Wool, Very Friendly, 2005). Along with keyboard
player, Cedric Pin, his Future Conditional project will release their
debut album, We Don't Just Disappear on LTM Recordings this April
- a label most notable for the re-issue of many Factory Records' "classic"
albums.

Port Royal
Afraid To Dance
PS, UK The second album from the band who injected new life into the
post-rock scene with their breathtaking debut "Flares" in
2005. For those unfamiliar with their debut, port-royal are anything
but just another generic epic instrumental outfit; utilising subtle
electronics and almost classical arrangements, they create lengthy,
expansive, melancholic compositions that often have movements within
the individual tracks, constantly evolving and shifting in tempo.
Though "Afraid To Dance" follows the formula that made "Flares"
such a success, it also displays sufficient progression to be more
than just "Flares pt2"; though the same components are evident,
the emphasis has shifted towards the electronic beats and pure rhythm
that underpin their sound, bringing them to the forefront while the
hypnotic spacerock guitars and synth gently weave melodies beneath.
Full press push on what could be the biggest album on the label to

release was listed on the Resonant website, so expect a wave of support.

Redfearn, Alec & Eyesores
The Blind Spot
PS, US Marvelous large ensemble from Providence, RI has been in existence
for a decade now. This is their 6th release & their second for
Cuneiform & is surprisingly different from The Quiet Room. It
includes a few shorter songs but the main focus of the album is a
very ambitious work entitled "I am the Resurrection & the
Light", which is a song cycle for a large ensemble featuring
a number of different players: appearing are accordion, violin, viola,
French horn, guitar, alto sax, bassoon, contrabass, drums, 'loops,
processing & other eletronic mayhem' & layers & layers
of vocals from up to 4 vocalists (Alec & 3 female voices). This
song cycle is a eulogy & meditation about drug addiction &
death from drug addiction & related causes. A compelling, powerful,
demanding & ultimately beautiful & moving work. No one else
sounds like The Eyesores & with this album, no one combines such
purity of vocal & instrumental work with such a sense of impending
uneasiness & doom. Combines acid folk, maverick 20th century Americana
(Tom Waits, Pauline Oliveros, Charles Ives, John Cage, Harry Partch),
cabaret & theater music, hypnotic minimalism (Terry Riley &
Phillip Glass) noise/drone rock, Eastern European folk music &
much more. RIYL: Devendra Banhart, Vashti Bunyan, Espers, Fern Knight,

Samuel, Jeff
Step
PS, GERMANY Trapez is happy to present Jeff Samuel's long-awaited
first artist album entitled Step. After seven years of making music,
"the 8-bit Tetris wizard" Jeff Samuel has produced a true
classic LP, with tracks that rock the floor as well as tracks that
are deep and melodic, sometimes even epic. The album has a strong
songwriting link, although the music is still stripped down and jacking.
Step was created during the spring of 2006, and Samuel continues in
the melodic direction of his most recent releases on Trapez and Trapez
Ltd, Bork and Endpoint. These tracks were conceived as part of a dancefloor
album, but the extra steps and melodic sophistication makes especially
the CD version (containing extra tracks) one which can be listened
to in sequence. The title itself has many meanings: at its core, a
step is an object to get from one level to another. We can see that
Jeff has accomplished this on the closing track of the CD "I
Think They Are Trying To Say Something," which uses a melody
that evolves over the course of nine minutes, never repeating itself.
His production elements have also been stepped up, including the use
of strings on some tracks and even a short journey into broken beats
on "Month 2 Month," both an ode to Detroit and to the struggle
of living in the USA as a techno artist. Jeff's recent DJ sets have
already been setting dance floors ablaze with album tracks like "Off
The Mark" and "You Will Never Know," both featuring
Samuel's trademark basslines and almost song-like hooks. With Step,
Samuel consciously wanted to take his melodies as far as he could.
While they have always been present in early works such as "Double
Yum," "Knob" and "Fcote," they were never
as outward and naked as on this LP. Could this album be his final
statement in this direction? Maybe we will find out in another seven
years.

a rare look behind the dense electronic layers that signifies Mr.
Schnuass' sound. The 2nd track "Medusa" (Edit) is the EPs
true gem whose full length twin will reside on the new album. "Medusa"
is bold, big and beautiful (and features Longview's Rob McVey), an
almost painful tease of what's to come on his new album, 'Goodbye',
due July 10th. Also includes Robin Guthrie's (Cocteau Twins) reworkings

deep techno house tracks. Detroit-inspired 'Devotional' starts off
with an underlay of brushed snare, jazz ride loops and crispy digital
