Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week

Tyler Ramsey "A Long Dream About Swimming Across the Sea" CD ON SALE $12.50
This debut album from N. Carolina’s Tyler Ramsey (who also just happens to be the new guitarist for Band of Horses) has been breaking our hearts for the last week with it's moody guitar romanticism and Smokey Mountain melancholy. Full of Fahey/Kottke-esque guitar caress (or so we're told) and spectral M. Ward/Neil Young "moments" (which are obvious, even to us), along with the occasional bonfire reverie: lotsa glowing embers and swirling sparks... But I tell you what, mostly it sounds like a parallel-universe Red House Painters, and upon listening you will know exactly why Band Of Horses picked him as their new guitarist. It is uncanny, be it coincidence or fate! Listen to sound samples on our front page.

Parasol Label Group Stuff for January 22nd

NEWS: Check out the Gazelle release page for their debut album Sunblown, and download a special alternate-master mp3 of their monolithic rocker “The First Rays”. Gazelle’s album will be available via mailorder, um, soon, we hope, and nationwide in April or May.

REVIEWS: Earlier this month the good folks at NPR chose “Amnesia” from Richard Lloyd’s new album The Radiant Monkey as their Song Of The Day.

VENUES: The Big Apple’s last chance to see the final date of ex-Television guitarist Richard Lloyd’s, January Residency/Odyssey at Otto's Shrunken Head (538 East 14th St) in NYC with his band The Sufimonkey Sunday night, January 27th at 9PM. Free admission, but it's a small venue and it’s the last night!

Alcest
Souvenirs D'un Autre Monde
PS, US Epic, elemental post-metal shoegaze guitar rock from one-man-band and a female vocalist, a hurricane of pink noise likened to Jesu, M83, My Bloody Valentine and Sigur Ros. Highly recommended!

ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "The relationship between heavy metal and the so-called "shoegazer" movement of the early '90s might not be apparent in writing, but with Justin Broaderick's amazing transmutation of his grinding industrial metal in Napalm Death and Godflesh into the dark, sonic bliss of his current incarnation as Jesu, it doesn't seem so far-fetched anymore. Immediately upon first listen the connection between one-man band Neige's French "black metal" roots and his current neo-psychedelic explorations under the Alcest moniker doesn't seem so far-fetched, natural even. Playing all the instruments on Alcest's debut full-length Souvenirs d'Un Autre Monde ("Memories of a Future World") Neige builds layers upon layers of ecstatically distorted guitars that evoke obvious comparisons to My Bloody Valentine's sonic extravaganzas and less obvious nods to the brooding minor-key post-metal of Jesu, only perhaps a bit sunnier. There are only six songs on Souvenirs, and the formula deviates only slightly, but the mission statement is evident from the opening crunch of the first track "Printemps Emeraude," as the foundation of majestic guitar swells and stately minimalist drums is laid and the journey begins, and the listener is seemingly transported over great distances and through lifetimes via hypnotic repetition and a series of dynamic shifts which are probably more important than the actual songs themselves. The feelings elicited are those of yearning, nostalgia, triumph and blissful peace, all without a single lyric in (discernible) English. And really, the best factor arising from the meeting of metal and shoegaze is that this is a guitar album -- a monstrous, churning, epic guitar album -- without a single guitar solo!" (Brian Way)

American Mars
Western Sides
PS, US Hailing from Detroit, yet having not a trace of the Motor City rock element, their ethereal sound is an impassioned & moody brand of indie-Americana. Under the direction of the band's pedal steel player & producer DAVID FEENY (Blanche, Loretta Lynn, The White Stripes), the band's ranging impulses are brought together to create something more than the sum of its songs.

Arbol
You Traveled My Heart Inside Out
PS, SPAIN Arbol´s 3rd release "You Travelled my Heart Inside Out" is out now. Miguel Marín, aka Arbol, continues to walk a path that the enigmatic lushness of his previous work cannot erase. Where a clearing in the forest of "Dreams made of paper" (Lejos Discos, 2005) forced us to linger over songs that poured down on us as a sudden and marvelous light before continuing on our mottled passage, the select track of "You Travelled my Heart Inside Out" opens like a delta to new and wide pastures, bringing calm waters to soak the feet of the city. For this new release, Miguel has collaborated with Suzy Mangion, D-fried and the Japanese singer Eri Makino. It was recorded between 2004 and 2007 in London, Barcelona and Tokyo and confirms the crucial role played by Miguel Marín in the development of imaginary soundtracks as an independent musical genre. "You Travelled my Heart Inside Out" shows the influences that Arbol´s music has been subject to in recent years as he moved between three completely different cities, three distinct ways of seeing music and life.

Baja
Wolfhour
PS, US Daniel Vujanic´s third full-length release under the alias Baja, entitled, intensively displays the composer/musician´s exciting approach towards a "free electronica" genre. Fusing stripped-down folk, (free-)jazz, twisted pop, electroacoustic sound, maximized-minimalism, indietronics, eerie chamber music and a portion of sedative post-post-rock, "Wolfhour" plays with postmodern expectations as much as possible while avoiding pretentious, highbrow implications. There is at least as much ear-friendly repetition as there is stunning fragmentation. Vujanic´s compositions range from psychedelic piano ambience to sunny uptempo-pop, from electronic jazz fusion to cryptic sample ruins. Leitmotifs appear, evolve and fall apart into transcribed bits of data nebula. Beginnings sound like ends and vice versa. Sounds teleport. Comments on Baja's Sound: "Mirroring the obstinacy and arbitrary nature of human emotions, Vujanic is using electronic music in a way that makes it less a statement about media or a contemporary discussion about subverting conventional songwriting than a tool of matter-of-factness..." - Coke Machine Glow "If the indie rock just isn't getting it done for you anymore, Baja's enveloping, intangible compositions may be just the guide you need to more engaging musical territory. Tiny Mix Tapes ...beautifully strange thing in between postrock, notebookindie, jazzy bitparts and occasional guitar eruptions and - yes, indeed - pop..." (10 points) - VISIONS Magazine.

Battle of Land and Sea
S-T
PS, US To describe the sound of The Battle of Land & Sea, one might call up images of abandoned sea-worn ships floating through a thick coastal fog. And upon first listen you might call to mind Cat Power, or the soft glow of Songs of Green Pheasant. But eventually, you start to hear what makes the music of
Portland based Sarah O'Shura so special. You get a glimpse of a world through the eyes of a someone on a musical pilgrimage, whether the tales are laden with
sorrow or joy, they are enchanting & hopeful. Spooky & beautiful...calling out all the old ghosts from past recordings on beautifully warbled vinyl, they recreate an
old jazz club atmosphere but with a little sawdust on the floor.

Birdie
Catherine Avenue
PS, US A big, stunning Great American Rock Record. The band spins sweeping anthems told in California semi-gloss, with twinges of West Coast Country and big-hearted Southern balladry. It's an album about place and location, about the way that geography affects us. California itself figures heavily as a character on the record; two of the band's members are Southern ex-pats and the lyrics often address the bewilderment of finding oneself transplanted to Los Angeles. If you need musical analogues then we hear Fleetwood Mac, Grandaddy, CSNY, Rilo Kiley, and Brill Building pop, but that's by no means a complete list. This is ambitious orchestral music decked out in gorgeous harmonies, ringing pianos, and some pretty killer guitar work that knows a thing or two about dynamism. It knows when to take a breather, and it knows when to go for the knockout. 3HIVE REVIEW: "Biirdie brings the heartache like a slow-approaching thunderstorm."

Black Mountain
In The Future [deluxe edition]
PS, US Favorite psych-and-prog-spiritual pioneers BLACK MOUNTAIN are back with "In The Future", their second full-length album that resonates with the same epic ring, beloved deep rock touchstones and genuine folk fragility that made their self-titled debut full-length an instant classic. The new album possesses immense breadth, seamlessly showcasing short and classic folk-pop gems along with driving modern rock masterpieces, peaking with "Bright Lights", a seventeen-minute multi-dimensional opus that gives Pink Floyd's "Echoes" a run for its money. The DELUXE EDITION, at the same price as the regular version, includes second disc with 3 additional recordings.

"Liferz" is a portrait of a band at the top of their game - somehow they have managed to get even more "Awesomer". Bodies Of Water
Ears Will Pop & Eyes Will Blink
PS, US BODIES OF WATER started in DAVID METCALF and MEREDITH ARTHUR'S closet. They were newly married and lived in a very small house. The closet was the only place to put the computer that they used for recording. They eventually formed a musical group to play David's songs. Meredith figured out the piano, and their friends Kyle Gladden and Jessie Conklin learned to play the bass and drums, respectively. In the ensuing years, the four have learned to deftly spin those threads which inevitably weave their way through every Bodies of Water song: ebullient group singing, melodic invention, thundering polyrhythms, and sublime dramatic tension. "Ears Will Pop & Eyes Will Blink" is their first full-length record, and the first release from the band's own THOUSAND TONGUES label. The songs stray from verse-chorus structure but are engaging and memorably crafted, drawing on an admixture of traditions; the transcendent intensity of gospel, brutish gusto of punk rocking, earnest idiosyncrasy of American folk, sonic inclusiveness of tropicalia, planned jamming of prog, and the sincere bombast of musical theatre. These songs can be likened to a sort of emotional topiary; an unruly living mess lent its shape by the psychic framework around which it grows. Since its inception Bodies of Water have added an auxiliary corps of musicians and when playing in L.A. their ranks can swell to as many as 11; hitting, blaring, strumming and bowing away. The four core members' vocal synchronicity remains the group's hallmark. Their calls, responses, shouts and harmonies ride above and around a retaining wall of sound in a fleeting burst of neo-tent revival immediacy.

American Matador
PS, US "'One, Two' is a perfect example of the benefits resulting from the slightly thicker, more complex sound the band has chosen to explore on their latest record. Time changes, layered guitars, and a generally expanded musical vocabulary make American Matador's better moments a true step forward for an already excellent band ... and when the grand finale arrives, and drummer Dan Reinholdt's kit explodes like fireworks, any conceivable doubt disintegrates: American Matador is an awesome record." -Pitchfork [8.0]

Carroll, Barton
Lost One
PS, US The Lost One is a collection of twelve cinematic country songs by Barton Carroll. Since 2002, Barton Carroll has toured and recorded extensively with Crooked Fingers and Eric Bachmann, playing guitar, steel guitar, and upright bass. Carroll has also toured, playing various instruments with Azure Ray, Dolorean, and Micah P. Hinson. The album title, The Lost One, was stolen from one of the classic films of the Noir canon, a genre that Carroll is hooked on. Like the film, the songs tell stories of souls who, burdened by their past, fear they will not be redeemed. Carroll's sardonic and self effacing wit is evident. Musically, the record is a mixture of the mountain music that Carroll grew up hearing in Western North Carolina, and the sweet, sad, melodic sensibility of Alex Chilton. Carroll has a sincere, durable voice well suited for storytelling and folk songs. The Lost One was produced by Martin Feveyear, who engineered and produced the 2005 Crooked Fingers release, Dignity and Shame. Feveyear is a veteran producer and engineer, having worked with such artists as Mark Lanegan, Damien Jurado, and John Wesley Harding.

Celletti, Alessandra
Way Out
PS, UK LTM is proud to announce a new studio album from Alessandra Celletti, the virtuoso Italian composer/pianist whose previous CDs include acclaimed interpretations of works by Glass, Satie and Gurdjieff. Way Out is Alessandra's third album of original material, following Overground (1997) and Chi Mi Darà le Ali (2006). Recorded in Rome in 2007, Way Out marks an innovative exploration of several musical styles, including vocal tracks sung by Alessandra as well as a number of her exquisite solo piano compositions. She is joined on most of the tracks by drummer Fabio Ferri, while Renzo Pin provided English-language lyrics. Stand-out tracks include Dear To Me, Burning and Hundred Points, the latter a future pop classic complemented by a brilliant animated video clip made by Tony Sbarbaro. A unique set that defies classification, Way Out also features one bonus song, the beautiful title track from Alessandra's previous artist album, Chi Mi Darà le Ali. The memorable cover image is the painting Pensando alla Guerra by artist Isobel Blank. Short biography: Alessandra Celletti studied piano at the Santa Cecilia Music Conservatory in Rome . After graduating she continued her studies with Vera Gobbi Belcredi, specializing in French piano works of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. In 1994 she released Les sons et les parfums, an album of pieces by Debussy, Ravel and Satie. Since then she has followed an irregular artistic path, characterized by sudden departures from classical music. Her second album, Viaggio a Praga, an exploration of the work of Bohemian composers, saw Alessandra awarded a scholarship by the Czech Republic in 1997. On returning to Italy she began working with Kha Records. Her collection Esoterik Satie proved hugely popular in France , and Gnossienne #1 was used by Guy Ritchie in his 2005 movie Revolver. Alessandra is now preparing to release two new albums. The Golden Fly will appear in Italy in October 2007, and Way Out by LTM in January 2008.

Chico Hamilton Quintet/Elmer Bernstein
OST: Sweet Smell Of Success
PS, UK One of the most important films of the fifties, Sweet Smell Of Success boasts one of the great jazz scores; a combination of abstract jazz themes written and performed by the Chico Hamilton Quintet and a furious orchestral score by the masterful Elmer Bernstein. These albums were released seperately in 1957 - both became very considerable rarities - and are here combined in a single edition in digital format for the first time. Sweet Smell Of Success is memorable for the vicious performances of Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis and its uniquely nasty view of the tough underbelly of New York fifty years ago. It was directed by Alexander mackendrick ('The Ladykillers' 'Whisky Galore' 'The Man In The White Suite' 'Mandy') Its audience is with jazz and film buffs and the eternally stylish; strong export potential everywhere.

Currie, Jason
What Is Love For
PS, US Solo album of plush ballads from Del Amitri frontman. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "A sumptuous set of lovely, meticulously arranged songs, sung with earnest emotion and empathy. Comparisons to much of McCartney's love tunes are in order. Imagine an album filled with variations on "My Love" and you're close to what Currie creates here. The melodies are simple yet elegant, the production clean and crisp with few signs of the sappy gunk this could easily have turned into. The singer's vocals are instantly recognizable, but in this format of music from the heart they seem even more impressive, as he's obviously connected to the material and not aiming for chart success. When he reaches into the higher end of his register on "Where Did I Go?" accompanied by strings and a somewhat surprising strangulated guitar solo, the drama is riveting. It will take a few spins for this to kick in, but when it does, small variations on the piano based format such as the gritty guitar that jumps out of "Out of My Control" and the squawking, David Bowie-styled sax in "Something in That Mess" become gripping interludes in the introspective mood. Clearly this material wouldn't have cut it on a Del Amitri album, at least all of it together, but the consistent tone works to this disc's advantage. It's a perfect soundtrack for rainy days and Sundays, or as accompaniment to anyone who has ever lost a love and needed to hear those sentiments expressed with honesty, sympathy and warmth."

Devine & Griffiths
Wheels To Get To Heaven
PS, UK Ian Devine is guitarist with Manchester post-punk band Ludus and one half of the duo Devine & Statton. This is the new album recorded with Amanda Griffiths on vocals. To narrow the field, this is a record that sits in the same emotional and musical league as the third release from The Velvet Underground, the first album by The Smiths, Neil Young's 'Harvest Moon', Nico's 'The Chelsea Girls', Carole King's 'Tapestry' or Joni Mitchell's 'Court and Spark'. And how to justify such a grand claim? It all comes back to the music, and the world opened up by the music. 'Wheels To Get To Heaven' is a near perfect conflation of darkness and light: that such enchanting, mesmeric songs make eloquent not simply such sadness, but such heartfelt vulnerability to the curves and ragged edges of seemingly commonplace days.

Dolenz, Jones, Boyce & Hart
Same
PS, UK Almost immediately after the demise of The Monkees in 1970, there was industry clamour for a reunion and publisher Christian Dewalden came forward with an offer to finance the project. Micky Dolenz and Davy Jones were enthusiastic but as Mike Nesmith wasn't interested and Peter Tork couldn't be found a kind of pseudo-Monkees was created enlisting the services of gifted songwriting team of Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, who had written The Monkees first number one 'Last Train To Clarksville', 'The Monkees Theme (Hey, Hey We're The Monkees)' and '(I'm Not Your) Stepping Stone'. So Dolenz, Jones, Boyce & Hart was born. With the Monkees logo under copyright and not available for their use, the foursome set off on tour as 'the great golden hits of the Monkees - the guys who wrote 'em and the guys who sang 'em.' DJBH made its first public appearance on July 4, 1975 at six flags over mid-America in St. Louis, Missouri, where they were met by 12,500 of the same screaming fans who had followed the Monkees 10 years previously. Performing a raft of Monkee hits (Peter Tork had joined DJBH onstage at Disneyland) the band appeared on 'American Bandstand' and 'Don Kirshner's rock concert' and toured the States for a year before heading to the far east. They have the distinction of being the first American band to play in Thailand (they had to cut their hair to be allowed into the country!). The success of the American tour secured a contract with capitol records. The subsequent 'Dolenz Jones Boyce & Hart' was produced by Boyce & Hart and though light and very pop, is regarded as the most coherent Monkeerelated
release since 1967¹s 'Pisces Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones'.

Donna Summer (aka Jason Forrest)
Panther Tracks v. 1
PS, UK File under: electronic, break core, hardcore. He's back! It's been 2 years since Jason Forrest released his last full-length album, and 5 years since he's released as Donna Summer. So now he's back, this time with the slightly different moniker (DJ Donna Summer) and his first release for his own Cock Rock Disco label. Just as "Shamelessly Exciting" was a record that mixed different genres into a new mash of sampled sounds, "Panther Tracks" is a record comprised of different styles of dance music made solely with the intention to get people moving! From Booty to Break core, Happy Hardcore to Hardstyle, Techno to B'more Club Music, Forrest has it in there! Initially begun as a sort of remix record, "Panther Tracks" builds heavily on a variety of sampled heroes. One can hear Dj Chip and Dj Technics form the skeleton of more booty oriented tracks like "Peepers" and "Boomshakalaka". While some live recordings (on cassette) of old-school Uk Break beat Rave festivals by DJ Slipmat, Ratpack, and Ellis D are reconstructed to make new Breakcore styled dance tracks. Traces of Hardstyle, Techno and a whole lot of Breakcore yield such gems as "Party People", "Get Down" and "Rock Rock Rock". No style too hard or too cheesy to learn from, "Panther Tracks" is like the ultimate Rave; it's fun, slightly crazy, and will keep you dancing all night long.

Drawbacks, The
Slightly Less Vague
PS, US So most of the kids in Falkoping like to pimp out their Volvos, hang around in a parking lot, and maybe form a heavy metal band. There's not too much else to do 250 miles from Stockholm, in a town where the express train passes but doesn't stop. Heck, it's even 2 hours from Gothenburg. Fortunately though, the Drawbacks had other ideas... With one foot firmly placed on the Swedish west coast, and the other somewhere in the American indie-rock scene, the Drawbacks craft a brand of hooky and dynamic guitar pop. Tobias (guitar & lead vocals), Wilhelm (bass & vocals), Johan (drums & vocals), Klas (guitar & vocals), and Martin (keyboards) have been playing for several years, gigging both in Sweden and abroad. As Tobias says, they "spent a considerable amount of time learning how to deliver some kind of emotional context" through their songs, and they've gotten quite good at it. After a few self-released demos, Slightly Less Vague is the Drawbacks' first official release. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

PS, US PREFIX MAG: "Throughout the myriad problems that have informed his music, Mark Oliver Everett has continued to churn out plenty of product with his main musical project, Eels. Envy
Abyssal
PS, US Following their acclaimed fourth album, "Insomniac Doze", Japan's ENVY return with this face-melting four-song EP. Though acting as a stop-gap between "Insomniac Doze" and their eagerly anticipated next full-length, "Abyssal" sounds more like the missing link between the driving, cacophonous force of their breakthrough third album, "A Dead Sinking Story", and the lush, cinematic tones of "Insomniac Doze". In fact, were it not for its somewhat brief half-hour running time, "Abyssal" would be the ideal Envy album, marrying their vast influences into a transcendent, almost romantic sound that is rarely heard or felt in heavy music.

Envy
All The Footprints You've Ever Left and the Fear Expecting
PS, US Originally released in 2001 on respected Japanese punk label H.G. FACT, "All the Footprints You've Ever Left and the Fear Expecting Ahead" introduced ENVY to Americans when it was licensed for limited release in 2003 on DIM MAK RECORDS. Their original pressing sold out almost immediately, and the album has been scarcely available ever since. The vinyl now regularly fetches over $100 on eBay, and the CD is equally difficult to score without paying increasingly undesirable import fees. Along with their now-legendary follow-up, "A Dead Sinking Story", All the Footprints is widely regarded as an innovative high-water mark for hardcore. These two albums are justifiably viewed as modern hardcore classics whose monumental footsteps created an unending ripple.

Evangelicals
The Evening Descends
PS, US "The Evening Descends"Š and worlds collide. First you hear the prodigious musical skill: the deft guitar work, the clever pop sensibility, the wild arrangements. But then on other end of the spectrum there is the innocent and youthful charm of a trio of lost boys who seem to have no business making music with such maturity and sophistication. Taken together, you have EVANGELICALS, a wholly demented ensemble from Norman, OK. Dabbling in glam, slipping in a little funk and soul, drinking the psychedelic Kool-aid, blasting the synths, cranking up the guitars, and wrapping it all up with a dose of pop smarts, "The Evening Descends" is the first great album of 2008.

Fair Weather
Beginning From An End
PS, UK ANDY FAIRWEATHER LOW's CLASSIC PROGRESSIVE ALBUM - NOW 24-BIT REMASTERED WITH 6 BONUS TRACKS. Following the demise of AMEN CORNER, Andy Fairweather Low and fellow musical cohorts Blue Weaver, Clive Taylor and Dennis Byron underwent a musical transition into the band FAIR WEATHER. Heading into a "Progressive" direction the band adopted a harder edge and were the first act to sign to RCA Records' progressive imprint NEON (an attempt to rival Philips' VERTIGO label). Perhaps the most successful NEON signing, the band secured a UK TOP TEN hit in "Natural Sinner" before releasing their sole album, "Beginning from an End". Featuring guest contributions from DAVE EDMUNDS on "I Hear You Knockin'", although the album was a success in Europe, FAIR WEATHER lasted a mere 13 months before disbanding. This ESOTERIC reissue gathers together the album and six tracks released over three singles to comprise this definitive edition remastered reissue.

Strange Fruit
PS, UK GARY FARR's LONG LOST CLASSIC FOLK ROCK ALBUM - NOW 24-BIT REMASTERED FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES WITH BONUS TRACK. "Strange Fruit" is a great undiscovered work of the acoustic rock / classic rock genres, cited by some as a minor masterpiece. In the late 60's Gary Farr made the transition from leader of R&B outfit The T-Bones to a noted singer-songwriter. Recording an album for Marmalade Records, Farr then signed to CBS Records in 1970, recording this sole album for the label. Sessions featured contributions from RICHARD THOMPSON on lead guitar and leading lights of the underground MIGHTY BABY. Unavailable on CD for many years, "Strange Fruit" is a record made by an often overlooked singer-songwriter made available once more by Esoteric Recordings and is certain to appeal to all who adore acoustic music both melancholic and uplifting. Fessenden
v1.1
PS, US Joshua Convey, Stephen Fiehn, and Steven Hess (On, Pan American, Haptic) have been actively writing and performing as Fessenden since 2004. This Chicago/New York-based electro-acoustic trio creates distinct, atmospheric and progressive sound collages, at times weaving quietly subtle textures against harsh moments of volume, or low hums and buzzes against crisp percussion while drones interplay with staccato chords. "v1.1" represents their first release of studio-recorded material. An exercise in restraint, where hypnotic and atmospheric palettes create a vague sense of foreboding, this release engages the acute listener with new concepts of structure and texture. Praise for Fessenden: "Playing on a rusty knife edge, these artists mould a new genre of inquisitive reduction of technical abuse..." -Touching Extremes "Contemplative music that combines the best of improvised music, real instruments and yet manages to sound so micro-sound." -Vital Weekly "Like drifting Arctic waters in an atomic sub, slowly diving, headset plugged directly into the hull."- Avant Music News "One of the more patient ensembles I've heard, Fessenden members seem to be in no hurry to move things along here...just a few compass degrees this way or that...Fessenden provides a nice trip." -KFJC

Fine Arts Showcase, The
Sings Rough Bunnies
PS, SWEDEN RESTOCKING THIS TITLE BY LATE-JAN, EARLY-FEB! Third album from Gustaf Kjellvander's Fine Arts Showcase, and the follow-up to his 110% brilliant. The short version: TFAS covers 11 song by Swedish cult-twee-punk-lofi duo The Rough Bunnies. The bonus, on top of it all, twist to the album is that it is mastered by the legendary Mr Norman Blake of Teenage Fanclub!

The long version: This is an album of many stories. Gustaf Kjellvander and his friends in The Fine Arts Showcase have made a covers album, entirely based on songs from the Swedish, rather unknown, jangly, lo-fi band Rough Bunnies. Why is that? Let's make Gustaf himself explain: "I was first introduced to Anna Vermina and her cousin Frida, the founding members of Rough Bunnies and Inside Riot, through mutual friends. Frida gave me a CD-R just days before they were about to move to Berlin. About six months later I was looking for someone to rent my spare room. I bumped into Frida by chance, who told me she had moved back from Berlin to Malmö and needed a place to stay - so she moved in. I was already smitten by Inside Riot at this time, and when Frida played me the songs they had recorded in Berlin, along with the Rough Bunnies record C-sides, it blew me away. I played it to everyone who came over to my house. They became an obsession that carries on to this day. I knew I wanted the Fine Arts Showcase to cover their songs. The problem was that with a catalogue of songs as amazing as theirs it was hard to pick just one, so I came up with the idea that we should do an entire record instead (in the Merle Haggard sings Jimmy Rodgers tradition). And here it is: a musical love letter to two of my favorite songwriters, a celebration of the pop geniuses of the Vermina family. Rough Bunnies (and their twin group Inside Riot) have inspired me more than any other band this side of the millennium and this record is my way of thanking them. Rough Bunnies Saved My Life" -Gustaf Kjellvander

WIRELESS BOLLINGER REVIEW: "But the hook that makes this album fun isn't just the fact that most of the tales told in each song are full of girly sweetness. Rather it's the Fine Arts Showcase sound itself - and in particular, Kjellvander's sensationally produced voice, mixing with the aforementioned feminie splendour of Rough Bunnies' original words, that make it work so well. Instead of coming across as simply a cute, slightly cheeky female pop record, what we've got here is an album by a man who's lovingly singing through diary entries, discovering her fascinations, disappointments, sexuality, crushes - the works. This grown male's perspective on adolescent female territory delivers a fresh-sounding positive romanticism to Sings Rough Bunnies; and it's bloody infectious."

Finn, Liam
I'll Be Lightning
PS, US Debut album from the spawn of Crowded House's Neil Finn. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: I'll Be Lighting finds Liam coming into his own as a singer/songwriter not unlike how Neil did around the time of True Colours, a remarkable parallel in musical development that, when combined with the passing similarity in their songwriting styles, can perhaps tie Liam a little too closely to his father. Like his dad, Liam has an ear for hooks and a predilection for melodic craft, but he is not only his own man, he is certainly the product of his own generation, raised on classic pop dating back to the Beatles but obsessed with indie singer/songwriters of the '90s, specifically Elliott Smith. I'll Be Lightning has the same spare, dreamy qualities of Smith's music, but Liam Finn isn't as haunted as Smith, even if he has a similar knack for floating melodies. Despite a fair share of brokenhearted ballads here, this isn't an overly melancholy album; it can be comforting in its spells of sadness, partially because they're balanced by lighter material that meshes with the slower, sadder songs to give this depth, a richness in lyric and music uncommon to young singer/songwriters.... The 14 songs here seem stronger upon each listen, with the songs soon seeming indelible. This kind of gift is rare, but it has been passed on from father to son in a way that is similar yet quite different and equally valuable, as this excellent debut makes plain."

CBGB heyday stalwarts The Fleshtones are the originators of the garage revival still raging in the 21st century. With Take a Good Look, the band has reduced its Super Rock sound down to pure muscle and bone. Fuzzy guitars, vintage organ and cocksure swagger abound as the band re-stakes its claim on early 60s garage. Flower Travellin' Band
Satori
PS, UK Previously issued on CD by Phoenix Records (and o/p already), now issued on deluxe LP format as well; 180 gram pressing. Reissue of the second Flower Travellin' Band album, originally issued by Atlantic Records in Japan in 1971. Satori is a conceptual hard rock/psych album driven by Hideki Ishima's furious guitar licks which erupt and explode over the harmonic heart beat of the drums and bass. Yamanaka's banshee-like vocal style turned him into an occidental Iggy Pop or Robert Plant while the band itself was rapidly becoming Japan's answer to Led Zeppelin. Satori is a huge album in every way. From power chords to Eastern-tinged North African six-string freak-outs and crashing tom-toms, the band flexes its collective muscle from start to finish. In short, this is a real rock classic of the type they simply don't make any more.

Handsome Ned
Name Is Ned
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "A two-disc anthology may seem a little extreme for an artist who never released a full album during his lifetime. However, in the case of the Handsome Ned set The Name is Ned, it is a welcome introduction to a nearly forgotten Canadian singer/songwriter. When Handsome Ned died in 1987 at the age of 29, he left behind a wealth of recordings, from studio tracks to live recordings and radio appearances... A fairly even mix of originals and covers and an impressive array of guests. Murray McLauchlan shows up on a version of Johnny Cash's "I Still Miss Someone," Lydia Lunch can be heard hyping Handsome Ned's radio show before a live, acoustic version of "Sea of Heartbreak," and for the finale, Blue Rodeo invites Handsome Ned onstage at the Horseshoe Tavern to sing the Merle Haggard classic "Tonight the Bottle Let Me Down." However, while the cover songs have a charm of their own and help to shed light on Handsome Ned's influences, it's the original songs that display the depth of Handsome Ned's talent... Clearly a labor of love for those involved (Handsome Ned's brother contributed the liner notes), is a worthy reminder of a talented Canadian artist."

Heaven
Brass Rock 1
PS, UK CLASSIC PROGRESSIVE JAZZ ROCK ALBUM REISSUED ON CD OFFICIALLY FOR THE FIRST TIME- 24-BIT REMASTERED FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES. Heaven, a jazz rock group from Portsmouth, burst forth onto the British rock scene in 1970 when they appeared at the legendary Isle of Wight festival sharing a bill with The Who, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix et al. Making a stunning debut, the band (now managed by festival organiser Rikki Farr), soon secured a recording deal with CBS Records who signed the band for a large advance. The resulting double album "Brass Rock 1" appeared in 1971, adorned in a lavish fold-out sleeve. Well received critically, the album failed to achieve the expected success and Heaven soon disbanded, leaving behind a fine example of classic jazz rock. Officially released on CD for the first time, this Esoteric Recordings reissue is digitally remastered from the original master tapes and restores the artwork of the album in full.

Hello, Blue Roses
Portrait Is Finished And I Have Failed To Capture Your Beauty
PS, US Visual artist Sydney Vermont and her man DAN BEJAR (Destroyer, Swan Lake, New Pornographers) formed Hello, Blue Roses in Vancouver in 2005. Sydney writes the songs & Dan arranges them. Song ideas were knocked back and forth over a period of 2 years. Last year Dan & Sydney took time out of regular life to be together, write, read and think about life differently; It was in the balmy climes of their home away from home - Malaga, Spain - that the originals that make up their debut album, The Portrait Is Finished And I Have Failed to Capture Your Beauty... took real shape. In mid 2007, Hello, Blue Roses committed these songs to tape with the help of friends and family after their return to Vancouver at longtime fave spot JC/DC studios. Roses cite 60s faves (Bridget St. John, Bill Fay, the group sing of Trees Community), 80s AOR (Prefab Sprout & Kate Bush) and the cheery mysticism of young Scotland ( Orange Juice & Felt) as musical influences to their sparsely populated, timeless pop sound.

Hey Willpower
P.D.A.
PS, US "Which band can claim to take over the dancefloor with a twist of R'n'B, Radiopop and Electronica? Who has the secret recipe for a sound that equally stimulates teenagers and people in their 30ies? Who sounds as sexy as Justin Timberlake and The Soft Pink Truth combined? And who was the cover star of the San Francisco Guardian in May 2005 with the headline "dance, punk, dance"? HEY WILLPOWER is one of the hottest acts in the R'n'B Underground emerging from the US."

Holland, Michael
Simple Truths and Pleasures
PS, GERMANY This is the third solo release by Michael Holland, from Carrboro, North Carolina. Michael was a founding member of Jennyanykind, which released several critically-acclaimed albums on Elektra/Time Warner, Yep Roc and other labels between 1992-2003. Burned out by many tours through 48 states, label changes from minors to majors and back and in a state of complete emptiness and sadness, he received the Harry Smith Anthology as a gift and it completely changed his view towards music. His new masterpiece, Simple Truths and Pleasures is once again performed with members of the Big Fat Gap Bluegrass Band from NC -- the vast majority of it recorded live in the studio. More traditional than the previous record, the earthly songs reflect influences by Earl Scruggs, Blind Boy Fuller, Mississippi John Hurt, The Carter Family, Doc Watson and especially Hank Williams. The music is a perfect and very melodic mixture of truly timeless Southern musical forms: acoustic country, folk, bluegrass, honky tonk, old time string band, blues and gospel, led by Michael Holland's warm and haunting voice.

Illiad, The
A Sad Day On Pluto
PS, GERMANY The Illiad is a young quintet from Ohio. A creatively produced demo put World In Sound's attention to the band leader Kyle Pittman, an introverted and deeply emotional singer and guitarist. A Sad Day On Pluto was recorded in Cleveland, Ohio in 2007 and contains 13 original tunes reflecting a tasty spectrum between early Pink Floyd jamming, '60s garage/flower-power and loner folk style, and features very catchy lyrics combined with interesting 'psychedelicate' melodies. Pittman's music captures a unique style of composing fresh music with the influences of Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd, West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, The Velvet Underground, Marc Bolan and David Bowie. The mixing, mostly done by Pittman himself is truly a 'trip in time' -- a 'stereo-experimental' '60s style like Pink Floyd's Piper at the Gates of Dawn! The song 'Are You A Librarian' can be heard on Trip In Time Vol.2 (Psychedelic Rock Reflections). With expressive vocals, screeching guitar hooks and sunny Farfisa sounds in these electric tunes and classic ballads, The Illiad create the beginning of a fantastic voyage into a concrete vision of dreamy songs.

Instruments Of Science And Technology
Music From The Films Of R. Swift
PS, US For the critical listener, INSTRUMENTS OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY sounds like Brian Eno and Wendy Carlos had a love child in the 70's and subsequently marooned him/her/it on an Oort Cloud. If they had, this might have been the recording their love child beamed back to Earth. This largely instrumental electronic project may seem out of character for RICHARD SWIFT, who has raised eyebrows and turned heads over the past few years for his unmistakably beautiful singing voice, melancholic lyrics and sophisticated songwriting. Taking into account all three releases, it appears that Swift considers the last 80 years of recorded music as his own personal spice rack of musical texture from which to draw and concoct new musical recipes. With Instruments of Science and Technology, Swift has resurrected the earliest forms of electronic music, thrown in a few dashes of dub, hip-hop, kraut-rock, and Motown-and created a new hybrid dish. So fire up the hooka coals, turn on that full screen iTunes visualizer, and pump these jams as loud as your speakers/neighbors will allow.

Japancakes
The Sleepy Strange
PS, US Reissue. MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! Building on the accessible experimentation on If I Could See Dallas and the Down the Elements EP, Japancakes' aptly named second album, The Sleepy Strange, is dreamy and earthy, complex and immediate, and challenging and soothing. Though their modus operandi -- repeating melodic phrases for hours at a time to highlight the subtle shifts in tone and rhythm - - remains the same, The Sleepy Strange is the band's most cohesive work to date; yet it keeps all of the spontaneous beauty of their previous releases. If anything, the slightly more focused sound highlights the band's strong melodies and interplay, making it one of the warmest, most inviting post-rock albums since Jim O'Rourke's Eureka, which also featured a fair amount of Japancakes' secret weapon, the pedal steel guitar. Whether it takes the lead, as on the opening waltz "The Waiting," or adding to the weightless beauty of "Disconnect the Cables"' avant soft rock, the group's masterful use of the instrument gives the music a dreamy, strangely western-tinged timelessness. The surprisingly propulsive "Soft N EZ" adds naive-sounding analog synths to fiddles and pedal steel, highlighting the group's highly inventive (and somewhat startling) mix of styles and sounds within one track. This is also Japancakes' most varied album, both musically and emotionally; "This Year's Beat" subtly shifts from brooding to assuring, while the loopy, languid title track and the dark string- and keyboard-driven finale, "Vinyl Fever," couldn't be farther apart in sound or mood. Hypnotically beautiful, The Sleepy Strange is the best representation yet of Japancakes' exciting repetitions, and one of 2001's best albums. --ALL MUSIC GUIDE.

Japancakes
If I Could See Dallas
PS, US Reissue. MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! Japancakes' improvisational drone pop symphonies defy easy classification, stretching a single chord to its breaking point and picking up the pieces to create dense but inviting soundscapes which somehow find the common ground between the soothing wash of ambient and the propulsive energy of rock. For If I Could See Dallas, group ringleader Eric Berg and engineer Andy Baker handcrafted the disc's 11 instrumentals from snatches of studio performances, giving the songs a form and shape their live set no doubt lacks, but the cumulative effect is no less hypnotic -- for all of the record's cosmic glow, the recurring presence of steel guitar keeps the music rooted in terra firma, a paradox which makes the music that much more difficult to pinpoint in any single time or place. The evolutionary process, which guides each song, is almost imperceptibly subtle, their circular melodies shaded by analog synths and strings that bubble in and out of the mix -- creating music that arrives without traveling, Japancakes is that rare experiment as fascinating in practice as it is in theory. --ALL MUSIC GUIDE

Japancakes
Down The Elements
PS, US Reissue. MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! Eric Berg's heady instrumental visions maintain something of an unintentional defiance that suggests that the 21st century technology is still a far-off proposition. By focusing on cello strains, droning bass and guitar lines, and insistently groovy acoustic drum patterns, it appears that he and his other Athens, GA, cohorts don't recognize the cut-and-paste, sample-centric age that most rock is now generated in. This EP, which is sandwiched between two larger efforts of equally hypnotic textures, creates moods that are far more demanding of a listener's attention than much of the ambient music produced by the synthesists the world over. The wonderfully infectious riff that propels "A.W. Sonic" somehow manages to sustain its drawing power for the majority of the track's 11-minute lifespan. "Sputnik" and the title track are the disc's straight-ahead electronic fare, but they are so skillfully arranged it's as if they'd been secretly peering in the Orb's laboratory for years. As a lower cost introduction to what Berg has begun to achieve from an experimental rock concept gone right (unlike most), Down the Elements is immensely satisfying. -- ALL MUSIC GUIDE.

Originally released as an EP by Kindercore in 2000, Down The Elements clocks in at 37:58 minutes, which makes it a full length in the real world. These recordings were made at the same time as those for If I Could See Dallas. Eclectic, mostly upbeat, instrumental explorations like Trans Am meets Tangerine Dream backed with beautiful blips and burbles sure to sooth.

Jarvinen, Anna
Jag Fick Feeling
PS, SWEDEN This is the debut solo full-length release from Stockholm-based Anna Järvinen, former member of Sweden's Granada from 1998-2004. Granada released three albums and one EP on record labels such as Universal, V2 and Look Left Recordings, and were produced by Björn Olsson and Mattias Glavå, who also heavily contributed to this record. Jag Fick Feeling was recorded in the Kungssten industry area in Gothenburg during a rainy summer and cold winter with members of Dungen and The Works, amongst many others. For this record, Järvinen tried to make music she has always loved, with melodies that she grew up hearing: "...the soundtrack to Brideshead Revisited, The Carpenters, Elton John's darling '70s tunes, Vesa Matti Loiri's interpretations of Eino Leino's poetry, Woody Allen movies, Pentti Saarikoski, nature poetry, drug and alcohol abuse, nostalgia, the Finland of my dreams, falling in love, sorrow, homesickness." As a result, Jag Fick Feeling is full of longing, made with delicate orchestration, flute, vibraphone, piano and autoharp. On top of it all, Anna Järvinen's clear-as-a-bell voice rings with a tone not unlike The Sundays' Harriet Wheeler. Each song is sung in Swedish, but the heart doesn't.

Jettie
Kites for Charity
PS, US Swedish sensation JETTIE is back w/ their new album. A band whose overseas critical acclaim has garnered press attention and fans the world over, JETTIE's sound is reminiscent to that of early REM or Scandinavian contemporaries Johan and Daryll Ann. A dark and stark, truly powerful and uplifting listen, JETTIE's brand of tortured yet anthemic pop brilliance is undeniably some of the best "BIG" rock being made today. AP: "Moody, orchestral rock that sounds so big it's hard to believe Jettie's music can actually fit on a tiny silver disc."

Kubin, Felix Und Das Mineral Orchester
Music for Theatre and Radio Play
PS, GERMANY We are extremely excited to announce the 1st collaboration between the Dekorder label and our old friend, local conspirator and private hair gardener Felix Kubin. Kubin has achieved worldwide reputation by releasing post-dadaist, futuristic NDW-influenced Organ&Korg smash hits on his own Gagarin label, on A-Musik, Ski-pp, Meeuw, Diskono et al. He has collaborated with People Like Us, Coolhaven, Mark Boombastik, Asmus Tietchens, ensemble Intégrales, David Fenech, Ergo Phizmiz, Boris D. Hegenbart, Wojtek Kucharczyk and many others. His first recordings date back to his teenage years in the early 1980's, followed by his electroacoustic noise duo Klangkrieg and the pseudo-communist Liedertafel Margot Honecker. Right from the start Felix Kubin has written and recorded music for films (hence the title of his first album) by the likes of Mariola Brillowska and Anke Feuchtenberger and continues the German tradition of "Hörspiel" (radio play) with works such as "Territerrortorium", "Nachtspeicher", "Orpheus' Psykotron" and "Syndikat für Gegenlärm" (with guest appearances by Matmos, DAT Politics and Wolfgang Müller of Die Tödliche Doris). Some of Kubin's most gorgeous and adventurous works are his contributions to "The Raft" (a radio play by the mysterious Xentos Bentos of The Homosexuals, directed by Lukas Simonis of Coolhaven, Trespassers W, Dull Schicksal) and his soundtracks for theatre plays by Branko Simic ("Zufall", based on a short story by Vladimir Nabokov) and the notorious Schorsch Kamerun. The latter (known in Germany as a member of Goldene Zitronen) directed "Hollywood Elegien" based on a song cycle by Bert Brecht and Hanns Eisler. Now the best parts of these works are for the first time available on LP and CD, simply (and aptly) titled "Music for Theatre and Radio Play". While the musical spectrum on this release covers a variety of styles and moods it's still almost immediately recognizable as a typically Kubin-ist work featuring the main ingredients his records and body-and-mind-boggling live shows are famous for. Twisted rythms & playfully clever arrangements that could have been created by a mutated reincarnation of the legendary Juan Esquivel; hauntingly ethereal tracks sounding like a narcoleptic John Carpenter playing Angelo Badalamenti arrangements; contorted Big Band music, pre-war Schlager and Vaudeville sent through a malfunctioning pre-digital time machine; Ennio Morricone cloned as a Russian male choir; instrumental workers' songs Hanns Eisler might have imagined in a feverish nightmare - it's all there, and more!

Little Wings
Magic Wand
PS, GERMANY With "Magic Wand" by Little Wings Ahornfelder widens its genre variance once more to include an album we believe to be so genuinely beautiful that here's the first non instrumental album so far. After Kyle Field, the singer and head behind the changing lineup of Little Wings, released his book of drawings "Put It In A Nutshell" on Ahornfelder early 2007 it's wonderful to release his music now too. Little Wings sound is characterized the most by Kyle Field's notable voice. With a very unique sound he creates lush folky guitar-based tunes revolving around situations he may have experienced. But it's the poetic, stream of conscious way these images are described that establishes the special atmosphere of Kyle's lyrics. Sometimes they're reminding of the Beach Boys, sometimes more like contemporary American lo-fi-folk. In any way, you here a nature- and sea-loving man expressing his way of living and seeing his surrounding. And with the words and imagery he chooses his songs each establishes associations and feelings beyond simple tunes. With his always changing band recorded an album that may well be the one sounding more like a studio-recording than the albums before. The way perfect pop tunes and more expressive passages are alternating makes this work so special and abiding.

Magik Markers
Boss
PS, US Limited vinyl version of the most Magik Markers album (CD is on Ecstatic Peace), on their very own label Arbitrary Signs. "Recorded in the cavernous dark of Echo Canyon West with producer Lee Ranaldo working the boards like a diviner, BOSS documents the Markers with a previously-unheard fidelity and orchestration. Idiosyncratic song structure and melodies interspersed with a destructive drum stomp are reminiscent of the early electrified blues of Junior Kimbrough, or the black hole rhythms of Kousokuya. In a 2005 interview in The Wire, Elisa Ambrogio said, 'I want [The Magik Markers] to concentrate on music and focus inward, to concentrate on our own language of sound.' BOSS stands as the Markers' first stab at getting to the meat of this ambition. With a mix of blues simplicity, an almost Sonny Sharrock wailing and a janky Americana punk reminiscent of Pat Place and Roky Erickson, Ambrogio avoids preciousness like a rash. On BOSS, a tent rises right out of the empty plain and we are thrust into a full-blown revival show with no audience and no lights; it is just Elisa preaching, Pete blowing Gabriel's horn, and the mad wind of the prairie blowing all around. They are each hand-screened individual works of art & very very limited."

Magnetic Fields, The
Distortion (ON SALE)
PS, US New album! STEREOGUM: "The Magnetic Fields can't be accused of false advertising in titling studio album eight Distortion: Each tune's wrapped in a fuzzy, clamoring shell, even when the feedbacking acoustic piano and guitar hum's relegated to deep in the background. Distortion's consistent textural palette's reminiscent of Holiday's "Desert Island," but this is all about icy New York City, or some other place where it snows. Besides distortion, the songs are coated in the lonesome darkness of The Charm Of The Highway Strip. Sigh. On the whole, it sports more sonic depth than 2004's sorta minor, stringier i. Let's consider it a baker's dozen of sad-and-out-of-love songs... Let's also consider it incredibly beautiful."

Magoo
Soateramic Sounds of Magoo [expanded re-issue]
PS, SCOTLAND The original 1997 album and 6 bonus tracks. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "The brief tracks on Soateramic Sounds... are a giddy cacophony of fuzzy pop gems. Magoo's songs are noisy, quirky, and occasionally low-fi, but above all they're hooky, with sing-along choruses and friendly melodies packed into every second. It's quite a likeable approach -- some of the album's tracks are rockers, others are mid-tempo pop songs, and still others, surprisingly enough, are atmospheric and rather mellow. Each song casually dedicates itself to churning out snappy, memorable structures. Between the band's charming generosity with melody, their scattered and idiosyncratic approach to instrumental presentation, and their inexhaustible supply of hooks, Soateramic Sounds... proves to be an immensely satisfying listen."
