Ambarchi, Oren & Avenaim, Robbie
Clockwork
PS, AUSTRALIA Its initial release - an edition of 100 3" CD-Rs
on Ambarchi's Jerker Productions label back in 1999 - let it slide
by just enough aesthetic radars to register among cognoscenti. Coupled
with Ambarchi's solo work from the era, the recording marked a shift
from the gonzo-rock of the duo's previous band, Phlegm. Things happen
throughout Clockwork that had never really happened before. Recorded
in front of a live audience for that 'what we did on our holidays'
feel, Avenaim and Ambarchi unravel their detourned instrumental panoply
into a series of parallel universe propositions - (ie. If Ambarchi's
concurrent vinyl-only Stacte series was Alvin Lucier and Cluster collaborating
for Mego, then Clockwork is Mickey Hart's Gamelan Orchestra performing
Ionisation.) The scarcity of both Clockwork and Stacte within the
sphere of known sound lent a subtle distortion to received wisdom
of both Ambarchi's and Avenaim's development. The jump from their
1999 duo disc on Tzadik, The Alter Rebbe's Nigun, to their recent
collaborative recordings with Keith Rowe, Sachiko M, and Otomo Yoshihide,
is indeed a wide and almost inexplicable chasm. Those in contact with
Ambarchi's solo recordings for the Touch label, or with Avenaim's
live performances in Australia, would be partially clued in to the
shifts in approach that occurred in the intervening period. This reissue
of Clockwork - its reinstatement in the 'marketplace' for immediate
edification and dissemination - is not just timely; it is also one
of 2005's headiest pleasures. And that one of the most important pieces
of the Ambarchi/Avenaim puzzle will finally achieve its deserved position
within a trajectory of non-idiomatic improvisation (I'll say transitional,
lest Lawrence English side-swipe me,) well, one doesn't need to sound
that final gong to induce the respectful applause of the concert patron.
This is, you might say, a photograph of the clockwork of time between...

Am-Boy
Horrible Oracle Blessedness
PS, US Attacknine Records is proud to present Am-boy's "Horrible
Oracle Blessedness", 16 tracks of addictive Technicolor synth-tunes,
and the latest dose from a body of work that has earned him the title
of "Walt Disney on Acid". Am-boy is coastal NJ's Forrest
Wolf, and 'Horrible Oracle Blessedness' is his third full-length release.
Perhaps more so than ever before, 'Horrible Oracle Blessedness' is
filled with his trademark sugary hooks and pristine production that
will leave you with a smile on your face and a head full of melodies
you won't stop humming. The beats and melodies are deceptively simple,
exemplifying a complex series of emotions that perfectly unveil themselves
with each listen. You will not be disappointed, as this is by far
one of the best albums of 2005." - Erik Kowalski/CASINO VERSUS

Eta-Menge
PS, US Limited edition: 500. LINE is proud to present h-Menge (Eta-Menge)
the final installment of the critically acclaimed Mengen series from
influential German electronic music pioneer Asmus Tietchens. Eta-Menge
means ETA quantity. Based strictly on sine tones and white noise,
the Mengen series was released by Ritornell/Mille Plateaux as the
CDs Alpha-, Beta-, Delta-, and Gamma-Menge and then continued on LINE
as the CDs Epsilon-, Zeta-, and Eta-Menge. Asmus Tietchens' first
released his unique electronic music in 1980, but created works since
the late 1960s. Since then he has produced over 37 full-length solo

dealing with electronic sound and concrete music. Some of his over
20 full-length collaborative projects include works with Merzbow,

Junglinge with Thomas Koner. Tietchens' focus is the manipulation
of found sound in ways suggested by the material itself. German label

with furious grind, howling pummeling brutality, & lots &

CSSO, death metal, grindcore, & well shit! Crunchy riffs swing
from almost-surf rock, but spend most of their time in grind mode,
splattered & speeding out of control. Crazy drumming, farting
bass & some wicked guitar noodling add to the sick sonic stew.

Birchville Cat Motel
Seventh Ruined Hex
PS, US A further step out in Birchville Cat Motel's ruminations on
time space distortion featuring the additional mystical talents of
fellow gravity destroyer, Matthew Bower (Hototogisu/Sunroof!). Seventh
Ruined Hex presents like a lonesome planet, occasionally struck with
super-sized fragments of space detritus, but for the most part just
hangs around, spinning on its axis and doing fuck-all. Strangely emotive
for 'a buncha noise'. Like the deepest love, its warm yet tenuous,
and filled with the ever-present potential for loss and brutality.
More in line with the estranged love-tangle of the Birchville classic
'Chi Vampires' than the most recent befuddling hyperspace rock-overload
of recent albums like 'Our Love Will Destroy the World' and 'Birds
Call Home their Dead'. Features Matthew Bower who has been known to
put out a good album or two on a regular basis. Powerful. Beautiful.
Masculine. Girly. Loud. Tender. Heavy. Soulful.

with Ask Forgiveness, a collection of cover version victories, effortlessly
(it seems) making each one of these songs his own, having taken them
within and loved them - and then singing them out again in his own
idiosyncratic interpretation. Covering a handful of wildly diverse
artists as varied as Björk Guðmundsdóttir and R Kelly,
these renditions were recorded off the hoof in Philadelphia with a
stripped down ensemble including Meg Baird of Espers on acoustics
and vocals, Greg Weeks on electric guitar, aided and abetted by Maggie

Bring Back the Guns
Dry Futures
PS, US The second release on this new label co-founded by JANA HUNTER
and MATTHEW BROWNLIE. This record is an experiment in messing around
with music at its molecular level: ignoring rules whenever possible
and coming up with songs that obey their own whims. It's usually fast,
short and barely-contained, with weird rhythms knocking up against
big melodies, tripping over not-quite-but-almost over-the-top guitar
work. BRING BACK THE GUNS twists its primal screams into detailed
sculpture and invites you to knock over the ropes on your way to touch
the art. Influences? They're present, but never aped. The Pixies are
certainly there in the big guitar melodies, and there's some Les Savy
Fav-ish dance urgency. Some of the stranger time signatures have that
Dismemberment Plan feel, maybe. But ultimately,BBTG sounds like BBTG
and not much like anything else.

Cline, Nels/Carlos Giffoni/Alan Licht/Lee Ranaldo
Nothing Makes Any Sense
PS, US A constantly shifting and engaging long-form piece of developed
drone, foreboding melody, and harsh grit, Nothing Makes Any Sense
finds Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth), Nels Cline (Nels Cline Singers, Wilco),
and Alan Licht pushing their guitars into a cacophonous state that
bears much influence from the post-jazz fields they've all cut their
teeth in, but also bearing down a forceful brutality that has sometimes
eluded their past material. While Carlos Giffoni uses his analog Synth
mastery to adequately contend and mesh seamlessly with the trio of
strings, letting his analog noise pulsate and pierce with its own
sense of contained stampede. This collaboration was recorded in February
of this year at the sadly defunct NYC venue Tonic and was mixed and
mastered by the ubiquitous James Plotkin. Included with the packaging
are ink drawings from Lee Ranaldo and a review of Lou Reed's live
classic Rock N' Roll Animal by cult musician/Creem scribe Peter Laughner,
which includes a line which bestowed this album with its title.

Cooper, Rod
Friction
PS, AUSTRALIA From Rod Cooper: Friction is the culmination of over
a decade of instrument building practice and design. My predominant
choice of material is metal. I am attracted to its qualities like
a shiny lure that reflects light and filters sound. Each instrument
can take up to three years to design and several weeks to construct.
Initially I focused on percussion and bowing, however recent instruments
have employed continues bowing mechanisms. Coming from a background
of sculpture and later working as a furniture designer, gives me the
freedom to imagine wild objects and the discipline to actually produce
them. I was never satisfied playing a traditional instrument, yet
I had a burning desire to make music. My instruments are like a riddle,
which I have solved through my own means. In my life I have spent
much time in nature and I feel this comes out through my music as
much as the industrial qualities of metal are apparent. The more intentional
aspects of my sound are the open space, or the big sound as other
people have put it to me. Most of the tracks are pieces of music composed
specifically for each instrument and are just recorded as one take.
The instrument is the composition. Comfort through dissonance.

PS, UK Compiles sublime early recordings by Blossom Dearie; one of
the most distinctive vocalists Jazz has ever produced. Americans know

The Japanese - who see her as pop rather than jazz -long ago succumbed
to her charm and she has toured there regularly throughout her career.
Unlikely as it may sound, Kylie Minogue claims that it was Blossom
Dearie who inspired her to sing! What is clear is that her emergence

Fahey, John
Christmas Guitar Vol. 2
PS, US Recorded in '71, this was 1 of the most striking albums of
his career. But sometime between the time it was recorded & the
time it was released, half the album was scrapped. (Fahey was persuaded
that a double album wouldn't sell.) Thus the truncated America was
issued as a single LP. Released here for the 1st time are the additional
9 songs that would have made up the 1st album in the abandoned 2 LP
set. These singular recasting of American hymns, gospel &folk
songs; Skip James' "Special Rider Blues" an exquisite arrangement
of the 3rd movement of Dvorák's Eighth Symphony & a couple
of lost masterworks : "America" (the only recording of Fahey
playing 12 string?) & "Dalhart, Texas, 1967": allow
the listener to grasp the scope & ambition of Fahey's original
concept in a way never before possible. "It was a masterpiece
then," says Chuck Young in his liner notes, "& it's
twice the masterpiece now." Here, at last, is "America"
as Fahey originally envisioned it.

Fox, Robin/Thomas, Clayton
Substation
PS, AUSTRALIA Apart from being recognized as two of Australia's leading
improvising musical forces, Clayton Thomas and Robin Fox are also
acknowledged for their unrelenting experiments and divergent acoustic
approaches in relation to their instrument of choice. Over the past
3 years, Robin Fox has developed some of the most powerful live processing
tools in Australia through his research with MAXMSP. Clayton Thomas
on the other hand has expanded his performance styles, moving between
blistering free jazz explosions to introverted and delicate expanded
preparations on his 100 year old double bass. The results of this
pairing are, as you'd expect, are as diverse as they are spectacular.
Unrelenting double bass movements are reprocessed into microtonal
washes of sound - vibrated objects are transformed into uncharacteristic
acoustic phenomena. This record expands on the techniques of electro-acoustic
traditions and aligns both acoustic and electronic sounds in an integrated
sonic environment where the lines between player and machine, instrument
and processing are blurred and redefined.

Giant Bear
PS, US Energetic americana! Out of Memphis, home of the blues and
rock n' roll, explodes a bold experience named Giant Bear. And giant
it is. This tightly produced musical extravaganza will find close
friends in both rock and folk circles. Giant Bear has dynamic breadth,
mixed with a complex layering of instrumentation to grab the listener
and spin its yarns of seduction, loneliness, and unrequited love.
Combining those attributes with smart, storied lyrics leads to a great
sophomore effort for this eclectic band running the gamut from Trent
Reznor's ""Head Like A Hole"" to the plaintive
melancholy of ""I Miss You"". And then there's
the cello, yes the cello, which deftly adds its dark, smoky warmth
to the mix. Accomplished diversity seems to be the norm for this talented
group. Here is an album that musically weaves itself into you as it's
weaving a tapestry. It starts with up-beat tracks like Nashville and
slowly wraps itself around you like an old friend, a giant, old friend.

Gorillaz
D-Sides [deluxe edition]
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "The Gorillaz B-sides and remixes collection
D-Sides just emphasizes that Demon Days could have just as easily
been called Damon Days. Even though Damon Albarn worked with collaborators
like Danger Mouse on the second Gorillaz album, Albarn was its main
sonic architect, and this is made even clearer by the songs that didn't
make it onto Demon Days. Where the album honed a paranoid, melancholy
-- but always accessible -- vibe, D-Sides is charmingly loose and
eclectic... For longtime Albarn fans, this part of the collection
is a lot of fun -- a trip through his scraps and oddities is still
more rewarding than many other artists' magnum opuses. D-Sides' remix
disc is, somewhat surprisingly, more focused than the actual Gorillaz
B-sides are. It's no surprise that Albarn has gathered an on-point
cast of remixers, including Metronomy, Hot Chip, and the DFA, who
begin the disc with its best track, a belligerent, percussive version
of "Dare" that strips the song down to little more than
Shaun Ryder's voice, percussion, and the odd buzzing synth. "Dare"
inspired two of the disc's other standouts, a remix by Junior Sanchez
and one by Soulwax. While not all of the remixes hit these heights,
overall it's a fun set, and a good complement to the eclecticism of
D-Sides' first disc."

ALL MUSIC GUIDE: ..."Also included are two unreleased tracks,
"You Put a Spell on Me" (no relation to the similarly-titled
song by Screamin' Jay Hawkins) and a demo version of "Whistle
of a Distant Train." The latter track was taken from the Here
Be Monsters sessions, and although it can also be heard in slightly
different format on 2003's Maplewood, it's nothing short of beautiful
here, with a plucked double bass anchoring the elegiac mix of piano,
trumpet, and wistful vocals. Harcourt may be young, but he's one of
the most promising songwriters in recent memory, bridging the gap
between the confessionals of Jeff Buckley and the theatrics of Rufus
Wainwright. For those looking to delve into his ever-growing catalog,

Headcount
To The Point
PS, UK The third album from Oxford's Punk/Metal trio Headcount and
their second for Malicious Damage. The album follows 2004's critically
acclaimed Die Monkey Die album which gave the band substantial radio
exposure - BBC Radio 1, a guest appearance on Radio 6's Bruce Dickinson
Show, Total Rock Radio and worldwide international radio including
a live interview on Swedish radio and extensive college radio plays
in the USA. To The Point continues in the brash, loud, heavy but melodic
vein that has come to characterise the band's sound. One journalist
described Headcount as sounding like "Therapy? Sodomising Adam
and the Ants". Another one suggested "Headcount rock like
hell-bound pig-fucking devil dogs". Neatly put say we! The new
album features 11 uncompromising slabs of punk rock fury with lead
tracks Control and Gravy Train addressing the regular Headcount topics
of religion, politics and social commentary. Headcount are never shy
of covering controversial subjects, but there are one or two surprises
here also, as the songs reflect the development in the band's maturity.
To The Point was recorded and produced by Headcount in their own studios,
surviving monsoons, gas explosions and roof collapses. All in a day's
work for these boys! The band will be gigging nationwide during October
& November. Tracklisting Enough Is Enough, Control, Bleed, Gravy
Train, Daddy, Mother Earth, Misery, It's a business doing pleasure

High Mountain Tempel
A Screaming Comes Across The Sky (The Faultline Scriptures)
PS, US A darker ritual and a new herald. From California duo High
Mountain Tempel, "A Screaming Comes Across The Sky" is the
soundtrack to your next Apocalypse. Arising from the golden ash of
their last release "Pacific Sky Burial" (Lotushouse) this
outing finds our intrepid travelers exploring new sonic and thematic
terrain. HMT is the eternal sound questing project of Eric Nielsen
and Keith Boyd. Eric has done time in and with Maquiladora, Buzz or
Howl and various Japanese underground outfits such as Acid Mother's
Temple , Astro and High Rise. Keith is a self-made musical alchemist
weaving strands of aural gold from base material and mud. Together
they bring you a fine distillation of ritual music for these blackened
times. Drawing inspiration from sources such as Robert Rich, SunnO))),
Terry Riley, Lustmord, Phillip K. Dick, Arthur Rimbaud and HP Lovecraft,
High Mountain Tempel is an introspective yet outward reaching labor
of love. This is music as voyage, dragging your nervous system out
to the Cosmos with no plans on returning. Continuing in the tradition
of their last disc this project is an intensely beautiful hand-screened
work of art. So don your cloaks and grab your tomes, the ceremony

That Bad Eartha
PS, UK Eartha Kitt had won a spot as featured dancer and vocalist
in the famed Katherine Dunham Dance Troupe before the age of twenty,
and toured worldwide with the company. In Paris, her unique persona
earned her fans and fame quickly, including Orson Welles, who called
her "the most exciting woman in the world", and cast her
as Helen of Troy in his fabled producer who put her in new faces of
1952, where every night she wowed audiences with her sultry rendition
of 'Monotonous'. Broadway stardom led to a succession of best-selling
records including Love For Sale, I Want to Be Evil, Santa Baby and
Folk Tales of the Tribes of Africa, which earned her a Grammy nomination.
In 1967, Miss Kitt left her indelible mark as the infamous Catwoman
in the television series, Batman. She immediately became synonymous
with the role, and her trademark growl became a part of pop culture.
In 1968, Miss Kitt's career took a sudden turn when, at a White House
luncheon, she spoke out against the Vietnam War. For many years afterward,
she was blacklisted by many in the U.S. entertainment industry and
was forced to work abroad where her status remained undiminished.

Kubisch, Christina
Night Flights
PS, US Night Flights is a groundbreaking work from one of the most
influential of the first generation sound artists. For some reason
this staggering work has been left out of print for over 20 years.
Night Flights has been remastered and includes updated liner notes
from Christina Kubisch. Night Flights is being released in conjunction
with Kubisch's release of new work for Important Records titled Audible/Inaudible:
Five Electrical Walks. "The compositions for Night Flights were
realized in Milano in the period between 1983 and 1986. Milan at that
time was a vivid and experimental place, with many international (mostly
American) guests performing like Robert Wilson, John Cage, Trisha
Brown, The Living, Laurie Anderson etc. At that time we were a group
of several musicians working loosely together, exchanging knowledge
about custom made instruments, the latest electronic devices, rare
records, and information about where to go and what to listen to.
The lack of digital information and internet was one of the reasons
for frequent meetings and musical experiments. We were determined
to be the avant garde in a classical world of virtuosity. Davide Mosconi,
Raffaele Serra, Riccardo Sinigaglia and others included myself had
small but, seen from todays point of view, very artistic and exotic
looking studios with many strange, often non European Instruments
and all kinds of keyboards, electronic drums and tape recorders. The
official studios from the conservatory were not available for us but
not interesting as well. We tried to make multichannel recordings
and mixes by ourselves, we invented long tape loops going through
the whole room, echo effects and reverb. We became specialists in
cutting and manipulating tapes. The so called non-European musical
tradition was a permanent source of inspiration. The meeting and performances
with Roberto Laneri, overtone singer and Indian music specialist opened
up new horizons. For several years I worked as well for the record
company Raretone and was responsible for the release of the recordings
of Giaconto Scelsi. I spent wonderful long days at his home, full
with conversations about art and music.

during Electrical Walks. FIVE ELECTRICAL WALKS Electromagnetic Investigations

electromagnetic fields are detected, amplified and made audible. The
transmission of sound is accomplished by a built-in set of induction

The palette of these noises, their timbre and volume vary from site
to site and from country to country. They have one thing in common:
they are ubiquitous, even where one would not expect them. Light systems,
wireless communication systems, radar systems, anti-theft security
devices, surveillance cameras, cell phones, computers, streetcar cables,
antennae, navigation systems, automated teller machines, wireless
internet, neon advertising, public transportation networks, etc. create
electrical fields that are as if hidden under cloaks of invisibility,
but of incredible presence. The sounds are much more musical than
one could expect. There are complex layers of high and low frequencies,
loops of rhythmic sequences, groups of tiny signals, long drones and
many things which change constantly and are hard to describe. Some
sounds are "global players", they sound much alike all over
the world. Others are specific for a city or country and cannot be
found anywhere else. Electrical Walks is an an invitation to a special
kind of investigation of city centers (or other locations). With the
magnetic headphone and a map of the environs, upon which the possible
routes and especially interesting electrical fields are marked, the
visitor can set off on his own or in a group. The perception of everyday
reality changes when one listens to the electromagnetic fields; what
is accustomed appears in a different context. Sound can transport
you to different time areas, sound can transport you through your
knowledge of space. Your brain is trying to get together what you
hear and see in new ways. Nothing looks the way it sounds. And nothing
sounds the way it looks. The five compositions on the CD are based
on numerous live recordings of electromagnetic fields, made between
2003 and 2007 in the cities of Birmingham, Chicago, Taipei, Paris,
Bremen, Riga, Tokyo, Madrid, London, New York, Berlin and others.
The sounds have not been altered electronically or by other means.
" Christina Kubisch, July 2007 Christina Kubisch belongs to the
first generation of sound artists. Trained as a composer, she studied
painting, music (flute and composition) and electronics in Hamburg,
Graz, Zürich and Milano, where she graduated. Her work can be
described as the "synthesis of arts" - the discovery of
acoustic space and the dimension of time in the visual arts on the
one hand, and a redefinition of relationships between material and
form on the other. Kubisch is best known for artistically and innovatively
using techniques such as magnetic induction and ultraviolet light
to create and realize her work. Since the 1970's Kubisch has been
experimenting with electromagnetic induction and was one of the first
to use this method for creating sound installations. Some of her most
well know works include the Electrical Walks series, where audience
wear magnetic headphones, specially designed by Kubisch, with builtin
coils that respond to electrical fields in the environment.

M. Rosner
Alluvial
PS, AUSTRALIA M.Rösner's Alluvial is without question one of
the finest abstract electronic releases to come forth from Australia
this year. Crafted throughout 2004 and early 2005, Rösner's original
source material stems largely from instruments (guitar, percussion,
analog electronics), and through his detailed processing and production
methods he's been able to counterpoint a desire for raw digital overtones
against earthy acoustic qualities. The results are simply a pleasure
for the ears - course passages of hiss and electronic splutter give
way to lilting moments of sheer melodic beauty. With strong humming
bass heavy textures, broken rhythms and a post-lofi production aesthetic,
Rösner's crafted an exquisite piece of contemporary electronic
music. BIOGRAPHY: M. Rösner is a sound artist based in the south-west
of Australia. Surrounded by open spaces yet within close reach of
the city, an infusion of place and time is evident in all M. Rösner's
works. Working with minimal organic fragments gathered from acoustic
instruments and microphone recordings that are digitally processed,
M. Rösner aims to create abstract compositions that are at the
same point in time acoustic and electronic, organic but also digital,
freeform and yet standing still. In 2004 M. Rösner released his
album "post" on UK label 12x50. He has recently remixed
the Matinkarri Bridge in Finland for Sonic Artstar's Singing Bridges
compilation. His sounds works have received airplay and appeared in
art installations across the globe.

Major Stars
Mirror/Messenger
PS, US Now giant size and louder than ever, Major Stars plunge further
down the path of their second, larger life with Mirror/Messenger.
Their new sextet record features the same triple-guitar frontline
and fervid vocalizations from Sandra Barrett as did 2006's Syntoptikon
but with more songs then ever before found on a single Major Stars
album (as many as two albums, in several cases). Mirror/Messenger
is an assault on popular music, with considerable muscle exerted to
create a jukebox-ready duck-and-shuffle - if the needle don't get
tossed out the groove, that is. From their Massachusettes aerie, Major
Stars have rocked the world six albums over during the past decade.
On this, their sixth album, the signature guitar union of Wayne Rogers
and Kate Village (first immortalized in Crystalized Movements and
later in Magic Hour) is further emboldened by Tom Leonard, whose prior

Mandell, Eleni
Miracle of Five
PS, US Beautiful silk screened covers. Hand numbered & limited
to 335! Producer keyboardist Andy Kaulkin captured Mandell solo, singing
the songs while strumming on her nylon stringed guitar, overdubbing
the rest of the band later. While that might seem a bit artificial
for such rootsy, jazz tinged music, the results justify the means.
Mandell sounds relaxed & there is a spaciousness to the material
resulting from Kaulkin's ability to add & subtract instruments
at will. Mandell's voice has shifted from its once edgy PJ Harvey
timbre to a far more luxurious, breathy style, similar to Aimee Mann,
especially on the languorous "Salt Truck." This is hushed,
melancholy music that remains sparse, even stark, despite the addition
of such relatively exotic accompaniment as harp, celeste, clarinet
& vibes (from X drummer D.J. Bonebrake). The always impressive
Nels Cline is credited w/guitars, dobro & "weird sounds."
He restrains his typically avant garde, jazzy excursions to bring
unusual tones & textures to the project.

PS, UK Dennis Mccrohan and brother Jerry change their surnames to
Edmonton and formed Canadian psych legends The Sparrow with buddy
Bruce Palmer (later of Buffalo Springfield), it was the beginning
of a fabulous journey on the lost highway of Rock N Roll! Soon they
were all in L.A. with and morphed into Steppenwolf. Leaving Steppenwolf
(but not before contributing the biker classic of all time Born To
Be Wild to their repertoire!) to Jerry and his new bandmates, Dennis
Edmonton now known as Mars Bonfire went solo, becoming one of L.A's
top and coolest session-men. His wild guitar graced everyone from
Thomas and Richard Frost to Kim Fowley's legendary and eccentric 1960s
albums. At the height of all this he recorded this psych/pop/folk/heavy
rock album, rich with the hits he penned for Steppenwolf, and his
own more minor hits faster than the speed of life. An amazing lost
part of the West Coast jigsaw revealed with a groovy, dirty, Sunset
style and wonderfully packaged ditto! With detailed notes by Detroit's
own Matthew Smith, featuring interviews with Kim Fowley and Mars himself
- this is a must for all fans of West Coast rock and Pop, Psychedelia,

Merzbow
Live Destruction at No Fun 2007
PS, US At this year's No Fun Fest, the legendary Japanese noise king
Merzbow gave a blistering performance that stunningly brought together
both his classic analog and recently-explored digital concerns. Keeping
pace between two laptops and an amplified sheet-metal instrument,
the walls of computerized droning distortion and psyched-out metallic
scarping easily reminded those attending to the world of noise that
even icons with twenty-plus year careers under their belts can still
vivaciously channel the advancements they helped build as well as
compose stunning untried sounds. Along with the recent Pain Jerk/Incapacitants
split CD and the upcoming Aaron Dilloway/Carlos Giffoni split LP,
Live Destruction at No Fun 2007 manifests itself as an essential audio
document of one of many striking performances at this year's festival.
Often considered a genre best experienced live, the gargantuan walls
of outer-region sonics set forth by noise were aptly spawned in-the-moment
and afresh by their performers, and the variety, sheer power, and
unrelenting confidence of Merzbow's set in particular no doubt left
longtime followers thoroughly fulfilled while those who've only heard
the name thrown around in mythical regard were bound to have been
left with a hearty appreciation of his genius.

Moore, Steve
The Henge
PS, UK Limited 500 copy vinyl edition on steel grey wax. The Henge
was self-recorded and the CD layout and design was also created by
Steve Moore. Moore is one half of Zombi. The band's previous release
on Static Caravan sold out in a flash with punters still hunting down
copies. Vibes and chatter are not liable to stop soon either with
Prins Thomas releasing 'Sapphire' on his latest compilation and The
Rapture on the cusp of releasing a 12" on their own new imprint.
The Henge was self-recorded by Moore and he describes The Henge and
his approach; "This album represents a turning point in my writing
- a subtle shift in direction that is only apparent when considering
the album as a whole. While no track is too far removed from the harmonic
language I create through my work with Zombi, this album gives me
a chance to expand my tonal palette by experimenting with different
instrumentations." "The album is meant to be viewed as a
small step in a new direction, exploring some of the more ambient,
drone-oriented ideas I've written over the last couple years."
Moore continues; "Although I always enjoy collaborative writing,
the challenge of single-handedly developing an idea from conception
to completion can sometimes be an even more rewarding experience."
In addition to his works with ZOMBI, Moore has also recorded material
with MICROWAVES and PANTHERS, as well as been involved in a number
of scores for independent horror movies including 'The Redsin Tower'
(collaboration with Scott Hull (of PIG DESTROYER, AGORAPHOBIC NOSEBLEED),
'Horror Business', 'Murder-Set-Pieces' (as ZOMBI), 'Home Sick' (as
ZOMBI) and more. Additionally, Moore has scheduled his first live
appearance performing tracks from The Henge for Friday, October 19
as he opens for WITHCRAFT and WOLVES IN THE THRONEROOM at Death By
Audio in Brooklyn, NY. For fans of John Carpenter soundtracks, Tangerine

is broadly described a the "exotica" genre, Korla Pandit's

Pluramon
The Monstrous Surplus
PS, GERMANY This is the fifth full-length release by Marcus Schmickler
aka Pluramon. The Monstrous Surplus bears three different vocalists
and as many narrative voices. The songs do not simply present a singer
or songwriter self: they push the envelope of what it means to tell
a story. Completely contemporary, yet unabashedly diving into moods,
the album succeeds in capturing the fragmented, yet sophisticated
soul of urban life: "Can't Disappear" is a story about a
secret threesome relationship, "Fresh Aufhebung" is a spoken
pamphlet for a break-up and "If Time Was On My Side" is
a melancholic story about bad timing with love. Listeners of the previous
albums will recognize a style that remains dreamy and atmospheric
with pop songs that are sometimes laid-back yet melancholic, even
enigmatic, at other times dramatic and intense. Featuring appearances
by Julia Hummer, a prominent young German actress who tours with her
own band Too Many Boys, Julee Cruise, who was already featured on
the last album, and New York-based German artist and writer, Jutta
Koether, who is also known as co-founder of leading German pop magazine,
SPEX. The fourth vocalist is Marcus himself on one song as well as
background on other songs. Also responsible for the production, Marcus
Schmickler is well-known in a lot of different contexts related to
electronic music, let it be beat-oriented, improvised music or classical
music.

Roux, Sebastien
Revers Ouest*
PS, AUSTRALIA "This is the story of a man marked by an image
of his childhood ..." Or perhaps is it the story of this woman
coming here to meet a beloved stranger, at the Grange-Auloup street?
or maybe their story?" - Sébastien Roux. Revers Ouest*
is a radio phonic work based on text fragments drawing a futuristic
and mental description of the Nantes city. It's an isolated utopist
vision of architecture, buildings made like concrete waves. The texts
are read by two actors, whose voices are used as a musical material
and digitally processed, becoming a ghostly trail of the characters
they represent. The piece, by mixing a fragmented story with heavily
processed acoustic sources, aims to intricate radio art genres like
documentary and hörspiel with more 'musical' forms such as electroacoustic
and contemporary classical music. The first version of the piece was
commissioned by Sonor festival and co-produced by La Muse en Circuit.
It was premiered on the 31/03/2007 in Lieu Unique (Nantes).
