Parasol New Arrivals • March 20, 2007

Hi friends,

We’d like to start off the update by filling you in on what our little Parasol pet has been up to. You may recall a couple of updates back our new friend had taken complete control of the office after we had shut down for the day. We would come back the next morning to find our workspace in a shambles. This time you’ve really done it, friend. Our pal, Jared del Deo, sent over a copy of his newest project titled, The Qualitarians housed in a beautiful, one of a kind case along with elaborate knick knacks to boot. But lo and behold, our furry friend, who I like to call “Oh Sheila”, decided to that she would like the one of a kind box for herself and proceeded to demolish the contents within. Oh well, what are you going to do? Or should I say, what are you going to do next, Oh Sheila?

This week we’ve been bumpin’ the new Low and Ted Leo and The Pharmacists at full volume and we recommend you do the same, friends. Also, this just in, we’ve got one copy each of the Bee Gees “Studio Albums 1967-1968 [Box Set]" (pre-disco wank era, this is the good stuff) and the Johnny Cash “Unearthed” 5CD box set. Act now and we will part with these gems for a measly couple of buck over cost!

That will be all for this week. Enjoy the update keep your ear to the ground.

Soon,

Roy/Paul/Oh Sheila (you sneaky little thing, you)

Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week

Low "Drums & Guns" CD $12.00 (Sub Pop)
The eighth full-length from Minnesota's Low, and their second for Sub Pop. While these songs feature new elements (looped vocals, drum machines, etc.), and are thoroughly, radiantly contemporary, they remain undeniably Low's. "Drums And Guns" possesses the unique, subtle beauty and power we've come to expect from this band, but it's also profoundly exciting in ways that are easy to forget music can be.

Adult.
Why Bother?
PS, US Uneasy listening music for uneasy times. A time to contextualize "folk" for our intent & advocate the importance of being folk. Folklore defines a distinctive culture, the common people, real people. Uncomfortable, restless, disturbed, perturbed, awkward & anxious. This hopes to spread the word of weird... Abnormal motivations, ready & willing. This album, of all their albums, they feel is the most accurate culmination of our disordered hysteria

PS, US Secrets of the Lost Satellite combines tripped-out instrumentation with a vast array of sonic color creating a demanding, visceral appeal. Live instruments (drums, piano, and guitar) mingled with electronic elements. Strong, hooky vocals keep the album on course. This album most definitely pulls the listener into an eerie, enticing space/dream world. Our pal, Jeff Garber (Ghost of PMO's past) contributes guitar on a track!

Atkins, Chet
Eclectic Guitar
PS, UK Chet Atkins played a major role in creating what came to be known as 'The Nashville sound'. Through his smooth and eclectic jazzy guitar playing and ambitious production ideas he brought a hitherto unknown sophistication to country music that would see it break through into the mainstream during the sixties and seventies. As a guitarist (compared by many with Django Reinhardt and Andres Segovia) he sold 35 million records and directly influenced talents as diverse as George Harrison and Paul McCartney, Duane Eddy, Eddie Cochran, Eric Clapton, The Ventures, Mark Knopfler and even Ted Nugent. He played guitar on Elvis Presley's breakthrough single 'Heartbreak Hotel' (which he also arranged), on Hank Williams' 'Jambalaya' and on the Everly Brothers hits 'Wake Up, Little Susie' and 'Bye Bye Love.' He produced sessions for Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Jim Reeves and for the Everly Brothers. As head of A & R at RCA he discovered Waylon Jennings, and Charley Pride. He was dubbed 'The King of Music Row' a reference to the Nashville strip where the record labels were based. 'Eclectic guitar' showcases Chet Atkins' incredible virtuosity and versatility and his extraordinary taste. Here jazz standards such as 'Honeysuckle Rose' and Tenderly sit comfortably alongside his first big pop hit 'Mr Sandman,' classical repertoire such as 'Minute Waltz' and beautifully played country and rock tunes 'Alice Blue Gown' and 'St Louis Blues'. The overall effect is quite wonderful. Sunrise Serenade / Honeysuckle Rose / Caravan / Mister Sandman / Intermezzo / Tenderly / Minute Waltz / Minuet-From French Harpsicord Suite, Prelude From Six Short Preludes / Little Rock Getaway / Ochi Chomya (Dark Eyes) / La Golodrina (The Swallow) / Indian Love Call / Alice Blue Gown / St Louis Blues / Gavotte In D / Malaguena / Waltz In A-Flat / Adelita / Petite Waltz / Liza

Autumn Shade
Ezra Moon
PS, US The nom de plume of Jes Lenee', a stunning young songstress brimming with unbridled talent. A classically trained piano prodigy, ultimately seduced by the craft of songwriting, AS is a marriage of her piano prowess & folk-inspired guitar strumming, imbued in a heady ambiance & enveloped in some of the most heavenly, intimate vocals to have come down the pike in some time. Unique sepia-toned microcosm, one that intertwines folk, chamber music, psychedelia, avant-rock & indie singer/songwriter. Colored by additional instrumentation of violin, hammer dulcimer & percussion, and a healthy penchant for sonic experimentation.

Bears
Self-Titled
PS, US Bears has been described by You Ain't No Picasso as a record that "recalls the tenderness of twee, the poeticism of Morrissey and the pop stylings of many of the bands on Matinée"-but that's only part of the story. And while the group shares an affinity for acts like Belle & Sebastian and Camera Obscura, their music is pure unbridled pop, in the best possible way. Catchy, carefree and, most importantly, free of any indie pretension.

Charles Atlas/Textile Ranch
Split
PS, UK The Static Caravan house of recordings deigns fit to issue a split CD EP by Textile Ranch and New York ambient conceptualists, Charles Atlas. Textile Ranch offer up 4 new slices of digital automation under such preposterous titlements as 'Murderer/Gardener,' 'Bear Is Ours,' 'We Both Hurt Our Heads' and 'Huguenots.' Susanne Bauszat (Tropes/Early Autumn Break) and Chris Bauer (Early Autumn Break) both stick their oars into 'Murderer/Gardener.' Charles Atlas opts for the more geographical, 'Oakland' and 'Genova.' Charles Atlas is an instrumental duo (often expanding into a trio or quartet) who utilize effected guitar, piano, synthesizer, melodica, trumpet, drum loops, samples, and other instrumentation to paint expansive musical pastures on the crowded walls of the urban centres they and their audiences call home. They have recorded for quality street labels such as Ochre, Static Caravan and Audraglint. Textile Ranch is the work of one Glen Johnson. Glen is also the founder member of the band Piano Magic. A band that have released music with a lexicon of good labels and collaborated with rediscovered poets before they were rediscovered. Vashti Bunyan, Alan Sparhawk from Low, Ben Ayres from Cornershop, John Grant of The Czars and Angle David-Guillou of Klima (the latter, recently signed to the Peacefrog label). Textile Ranch is the work of one Glen Johnson. Since the bands first release on very friendly he has been carrying out extensive personal research into the shoes of one Joseph Merrick after being commissioned by Nike to write the music to accompany their latest advertisement for trainers designed by David Lynch.

Concretes, The
Kids EP (ON SALE)
PS, US Vocalist Victoria has left the band, but has that stopped The Concretes? No effing way! Lisa and Maria are handling the vocal duties and the pop-orchestra behind them remains melodic and inventive. Think frosty starry-eyed folktronica and if you need some updated namedropping Jim says Concretes 2.0 is a bit more like Maria's folksier band Heikki and even sorta El Perro Del Marry in spots. EP features "Kids" from the upcoming album 'Hey Trouble' plus exclusive b-sides: "Another Day To Waste", "Reasons", and a lovely cover of Graham Nash's "Military Madness".

Damon
Song of a Gypsy (LP + 7")
PS, SPAIN Repressed on vinyl. "Damon. This is the artistic name of David Del Conte, a genius American gypsy musician who is responsible for probably the rarest and most sought-after psychedelic music album of all time. We're talking about his debut album, Song of a Gypsy, which was originally released in 1969. This album has a totally unique sound, with the 'crooner-like' voice of Damon, the omnipresent melodic fuzz guitar of Charlie Carey and truly atmospheric melodies. Guerseen is very proud to be able to re-release Song of a Gypsy on vinyl format. This will come with the rarer gatefold cover (there were two original pressings, one in single cover and one in gatefold, with different artwork). This fabulous vinyl production comes with an extra 33rpm EP including the four tracks that were released on their two bloody rare singles, including an insert with photos and liner-notes, making this a very special release if all previous things weren't enough."

Destroyalldreamers
Glare/Halo EP
PS, US 180g BLACK VINYL 12". Destroyalldreamers captivated us to no end with their gorgeous debut album in 2004 (the year's best shoegaze record, handsdown!) We were ecstatic to have them record a special limited record just for us, and we are quite excited to present it to you. Housed in a gorgeous die-cut jacket in the Claire's Echo series by Aaron Winters, with a slip-in full color heavy card cover image, backed with a beautiful close-up shot of a guitar in b&w. Destroyalldreamers does destroy indeed, with their beautiful and intense sonic landscapes. The instrumental outfit from Montreal keeps you on the edge of your seat as they weave through tapestries of billowing, effected guitars to create massive layers of beauty and noise. Fans of Slowdive, Explosions in the Sky, Paik, etc. definitely fall in love with Destroyalldreamers the moment they hear them. The EP is kicked off with the incredible "Her Brother Played the Riot" - a monumental side-long track eclipsing 20 minutes that had to broken into 3-parts on the forthcoming album. Here it appears on vinyl exclusively. On the flip, we are treated to three shorter but equally powerful tracks: Dead on Arrival (100% exclusive to this release), A Summer Without You (another taster from the forthcoming album on WAMR), and A La Guerre Comme A La Mer (another 100% exclusive track that will not appear elsewhere).

This CD includes sounds from various Drawing Voices sessions used in collaboration with musician/artist Aaron Turner.

Durutti Column, The
Sporadic Three
PS, UK The Durutti Column is Vini Reilly and Bruce Mitchell. In a career spanning the past four decades, and over 25 albums, they have written and performed as one of Manchester's most influential and prolific acts from their beginnings as Factory Records first signing to their fifth and latest album release on Kooky. 'Sporadic Three', released this spring, is the third in a series of special collections some 16 years since the original 'Sporadic Recordings'. As highlighted over his long and illustrious career, Vini Reilly is a prolific songwriter. Ideas and tracks just fly from Vini, and he's currently in the form of his life. Unfortunately, most of these tracks, or initial versions of songs, never make it to final release. The basic idea then behind The Sporadic Recordings series is to release material that never makes it onto studio albums. This collection follows the same premise and contains new and exclusive tracks, outtakes, versions, and home demos. Reilly's off cuts contain more ideas than most of us have over the course of a lifetime. A key interest for Durutti Column fans lies around the listener being able to hear a re-work, adaptation or different instrumentation used by Reilly as he regularly re-visits music from the past. The music of The Durutti Column has been commissioned for films such as 'Jerry Maguire' and 'Requiem Again', in addition to various works for television. Morrissey chose Vini Reilly to play and write on his first solo album 'Viva Hate'. The other two collections 'The Sporadic Recordings' and 'Return of the Sporadic Recordings' have sold out within a matter of weeks.

Einsturzende Neubauten
Palast Der Republik
PS, US This performance was filmed on November 4, 2004 at the Palast der Republik in Berlin, the former Parliament building and symbol of the no longer extant DDR (East Germany). The Neubauten found the steel skeleton of the ruins of the Palast a congenial location for their architectural-musical fantasies and field studies. Accompanied by a 100 member choir, recruited from the supporters of the www.neubauten.org Internet project, they played in and with the building in their inimitable, almost literally building-collapsing fashion. Contains previously unreleased songs, band commentary and more. Song Titles: Haus Der Luege, Armenia, Weilweilweil, Youme & Meyou, Perpetuum Mobile, Dead Friends (Around the Corner), Grundstueck, GS:1, GS:2, Unseasonable Weather, GS:3, Vox Populi, Was Ist Ist, Ein leichtes leises Saeuseln, Sabrina, Alles. Plus: Encore performances of Die Befindlichkeit des Landes and Redukt.

Elastik Band, The
S/T
PS, US Known almost exclusively for their extremely politically incorrect 1967 Nuggets cult favorite "Spazz" (track #2), the Elastik Band was actually a highly talented group that could play just about any popular style in vogue during the mid-to-late 60s, much like the Knickerbockers. Thus, at times they sound like the Byrds with vibraphone ("Mixed Emotions," #3), the Mamas & the Papas ("All I Need," #10), the Syndicate of Sound ("Lose Yourself," 19), and even what sounds like a parody of the Zombies ("Fire and Desire," #9). But the group excelled at the 12-string guitar and multipart harmonies of groups like the Byrds and Beau Brummels, as many tracks on the disc attest. They also had a few curiosities besides "Spazz": "Popcorn" (#7) being the closest, though "Mrs. Pig" (#17) would also qualify. The last track is from an Australian radio broadcast in 1968 in which the DJ begins playing the song "Spazz" but cuts it off before completion and calls it "offensive." This disc, released on lead singer David Cortopassi's private label, represents the band's complete output of their own compositions (they also recorded a Jimmy Webb tune at one point), some never before released. Hopefully the release, though belated, will show that the Elastik Band was far more than a novelty one-hit wonder.

Evripisis And His Tragedies
S/T
PS, US This is the first sign that Evripidis and His Tragedies are a truly unique band and have developed their own style. In Evripidis' song writing there is space for pre-Beatles pop as heard on "Ru Ru I'd love to...", to the sinister and grotesque "Transylvania, Some nights are sleepless" and "Cause I shall rise again", the picaresque cabaret "Red is the sky above the harbour" and romanticism "I want to be there", "Long-Lasting Lovers" or "Straydog" and also singles as "It's June Again!" and "Gregory (we're coming out in the light)". Conceptually, Evripidis use polarity (reality and fantasy, romanticism and sexual tension, self-parody and idealisation, catastrophe and comedy) to create a work guided by humour and his flirtation with daily tragicomedies. The result is an album that is personal, daring, original and ambitious.

Exits, The
S/T
PS, UK The Exits formed in 1977 around the Battersea and Tooting areas of south London and signed to Lightning Records (then riding high with Anthea & Donna's huge number one hit "Uptown Top Ranking"), scoring a top ten hit in the punk/independent charts with their lone 1978 single, "The Fashion Plague" b/w "Cheam". They quickly became something of a live draw in south London and played several high profile shows including one at the London Dungeon supporting Screaming Lord Sutch! Their set was largely comprised of songs written by bassist/vocalist Colin Swan and guitarist/vocalist Geno Buckmaster which evoked the best of Elvis Costello, Pete Townshend and Graham Parker but they also threw covers of Tommy James & The Shondells' "I Think We're Alone Now" and Small Faces' "Tin Soldier" in for good measure. A second single, "Keep On Tryin'", was slated for release and an album's worth of high-quality demos laid down in early 1979. Gigs promoting the 'forthcoming album' showed great promise. Sadly, Lightning slowly backed away from the sounds of the new wave, preferring to concentrate on the lucrative soul/disco market and The Exits recordings were left in limbo...until now! Not surprisingly, the band soon folded with Swan and Buckmaster re-emerging a year later as '60s/mod pop heroes The Direct Hits. But that's another story... With the band's full co-operation we have unearthed those unreleased Exits album demos and are proud to present them on CD for the first time. - Featuring the band's story in their own words with previously unseen photos and memorabilia! - These are the roots of The Direct Hits, one of the 1980s' great cult pop secrets! - A must for fans of new wave, punk, power pop and the cool '60s sounds of The Who, Small Faces and The Kinks!

Giant Skyflower Band
Blood of the Sunworm During
PS, US During a sabbatical from regular duties in THE SKYGREEN LEOPARDS, Glenn Donaldson (never one to rest) dreamt of Giant Skyflower Band, an exotic, flowery and crumbling new recording project with nods to fruity new age, psych, prog, folk, and pop songwriting. Donaldson quickly invited multi-instrumentalist Shayde Sartin to "smoke marijuana & make up strange pop songs," and thus the band was born. With Gong's seminal "Magick Brother" as a starting point and a sitar close at hand, the duo created a dark, peregrine pop transmission from their shoddy analog recording studio in San Francisco. The duos debut offering examines in detail the idiom of Bummer Psych; the strain of damaged Anglo-pop music pioneered by Syd Barrett that arguably reached its apex with The Television Personalities "Painted Word" LP in the mid-80s, but found new life in Japan via the genius of Tori Kudo and like- minded acts such as Nagisa Ni Te and Tenniscoats. Indeed, "Blood of the Sunworm" consists of depressing pop songs and damaged instrumentals - teeth bared and falling apart as they are cobbled together - on a hazy, cryptic journey through a busted kaleidoscope, behind a dusty mirror & up through the rafters.

Giffoni, Carlos/Prurient
Heavy Rain Returns
PS, UK Noise/experimental - Two of North America's greatest now living noise artists get together in Bushwick, New York for one harsh collaboration. This is some brutal stuff, man! They succeed extremely well to create something unique, but also where you hear the influences they both bring into the vortex of hi- & lo-tech electronic noise. Noise music became the new black in 2006. And this album gives us hope for an even more explosive 2007. "Heavy Rain Returns" is a truly monumental album. Recorded in Bushwick, New York City - it's an intense trip into harsh noise and electronic sickness, with some deep black metal influences. Carlos Giffoni is maybe best known for his great "Welcome Home" record for Important and his curator skills are infamous through his No Fun Fest in Brooklyn which is the world's most extreme music festival. He has also collaborated with Thurston Moore, Lee Renaldo and Fe-Mail. Prurient is Dominick Fernow who is operating the Hospital Productions label and shop out of a basement in New York. His albums "Black Vase" and the latest "Pleasure Ground" for Load Records are both highly recommended and loved. Here we hear two of the US-noise scene's absolutely most important creators together - and man, it's pure energy hitting you hard. The noise is ON!

Hume, Kevin
The Truth About Ants and Aphids
PS, US An 11-track, four-part song cycle; sounds like indie pop/folk with classical elements, songs centered around vocal, guitar, bass, keyboards, etc, but also prominently features strings, brass and woodwinds, performed by some of the finest musicians in New Mexico (no lie); lead single "Towns Where We Live" was featured several times on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic. Here he brings an indisputable triumph of acoustic guitar composition, a reverential & innovative melding of sound & form. Jonesy
Ricochet (1972-73)
PS, UK Jonesy are the last great secret of the early seventies progressive rock era. A wildly acclaimed British group whose influences vary from Frank Zappa, can, neu, Ian Carr's nucleus and King Crimson, Popol Vuh and the west coast pop art experimental band. The original vinyl editions of their three original albums (from which this compilation is drawn) on Pye's specialist dawn label are expensive collectables. The music has aged well and for once the inflated price tag is entirely justifiable. The group were brilliant musicians, pioneers who were not above creating under the influences of strange substances. The music is very psychedelic and hugely compelling. 1958 / Ricochet / No Alternative / Reprise / Preview / Questions And Answers / Children / Know Who Your Friends Are / Jonesy.

Lea Shores, The
Guillotine
PS, UK The Lea Shores provide string-laden psychedelia from South London's paisley underground. Six strong they deliver guitar driven melodies supported by the mesmerising harmonies of twin brothers Simon and Nick Webb and aural sound-scapes from band violinist and Brian Eno cohort Nell Catchpole. Andy Bell of Ride and Oasis fame had this to say about them; "The Lea Shores are my favourite new band... I saw them supporting Brian Jonestown Massacre in Stockholm and was hooked straight away. Since then I've seen them in London a couple of times and they are pulling bigger crowds each time. The music is psychedelic and layered... distorted guitars and harmonies but underneath it's almost folk music. They should be big... they're already fucking epic!" They are to play The Royal Albert Hall at the end of March supporting Kasabian at their personal request and are sure to go from strength to strength.

Loch Lomond
Lament for Children
PS, US Ritchie Youngs solo recording project. EP complies live performances from 2003-2006, ranging from Young by himself to a ten-person band. During this time, many different recording sessions took place in various studios & homes. "The hopeless tone in Ritchie Youngs voice tells of a terrible life of unfortunate circumstances. Even the old Scottish folk song from which Loch Lomond takes its name is the story of a broken heart & the springtime weather that does nothing to heal it. It works, though, because Youngs voice-with its gloomy, morose manner-needs the subhuman relief that noise readily provides. Ultimately it is a record wallowing in its own despair as much as it is a record that took great, inspired care to make-and its definitely a record to avoid after a breakup." -Rolling Stone

Locust, The
New Erections
PS, US The Locust has been throwing up in the face of conventional music since 1995, when the band formed from the pieces of San Diego hardcore stalwarts Swing Kids and Struggle. Their songs are fast, atrociously ultra violent, and drenched in sci-fi noise, gruesome keyboards, and herky jerky, bestial scream/sing vocals, described by one journalist as "a car wreck with vocals." This is the follow-up to their 2003 Anti/Epitaph debut "Plague Soundscapes". With longer tracks and Mars Volta producer Alex Newport at the helm, "New Erections" should find new fans for this adventurous quartet.

The Children of Lir
PS, UK The Loudest Whisper originated in rural Fermoy, Co. Cork in the early '60s. This psychedelic folk classic was recorded in 1974, and has gone on to become one of the rarest records ever issued in Ireland. The Children of Lir was a musical score, based around the mystical legend of the Irish King Lir, and his children who are condemned to live as swans. A glorious mixture of catchy melodies, soaring harmonies and biting acid guitar, it's presented here complete with a 12-page booklet featuring rare photos and detailed sleevenotes, as well as six bonus tracks (including demos, non-album 45s and the soundtrack to the work's original broadcast on Irish television), making it the most comprehensive edition of The Children Of Lir ever assembled.

Moskitoo Remixes
PS, US Limited edition of 500. The Moskioo remix cd is a 4-track single featuring remixes from Moskitoo's full length cd Drape (12k1041). Released as a limited edition of 500, the remix cd features "Wham & Whammy" remixes by Raster/Noton founder Frank Bretschneider and SND's Mark Fell. 12k's Taylor Deupree remixes "Skie" and the album version of "Wham & Whammy" is present as well. Bretschneider's remix comes in his signature style of ultraclean bleeps and boucning machine beats, layered with Moskitoo's delicate vocals. Mark Fell takes a decidedly different approach chopping the original into hundreds (thousands) of fragments and recombining them into a jittery and jarring recontextualization. Deupree's "Skie" remix adds organic tones and new layers of guitar and ambience to the lazy calm of the original.

Orchids
Good To Be a Stranger
PS, SPAIN The enigmatic five piece band formed in Glasgow have released some of the finest pop songs of their generation since humble beginnings in Penilee, a suburb of the city, where the three founder members grew up and started the band in 1986. Their first six singles and three albums were met with widespread critical acclaim, much of this from out-with the UK. They graduated from the gentle lo-fi craft of their first album, Lyceum, in 1989 ("A minor classic - don't let is pass you by" said NME) through to the ground breaking and progressive sounds of their third, aptly titled, Striving For The Lazy Perfection ("lithe, evocative and memorable music" - M M) in 1994 with "sixth member" Ian Carmichael of One Dove at the studio controls. In the intervening years they released Unholy Soul in 1991 ("Sarah Records answer to the Beach Boys Pet Sounds") and some truly original singles & EPs that, in keeping with a stance sometimes perceived as awkward and single minded, were always kept apart from album projects. The ethos was always more about value for money for their fans than genuine stubbornness, however. The singles included what many believe to be the high point of their career to date, Something For The Longing as well as final single Thaumaturgy in 1993. Reformed in 2004 after a break of Paddy McAloon proportions they are now ready to take another swipe at the tedious world of the music business with an album that takes them back to their musical roots. Recorded at Riverside Studios, home to other better known homegrown acts such as Travis, Teenage Fanclub and Trash Can Sinatras, their new record Good To Be A Stranger is a fabulous collection of new songs that will feed the hungry appetite of the fan base that has grown over the intervening years. Ahead of their time in the early 90's, it is only now that many have realised how fascinating and mature those earlier releases were. Good To Be A Stranger is released on Madrid based label Siesta on --- March 2007 and the band will be heading out to play live gigs for the first time in twelve years to promote the new release - nothing like keeping your fans waiting! Offers of gigs in the UK, Sweden, Spain, France, Germany, Greece, Singapore and the USA illustrate how the World Wide Web has allowed their global reputation to grow. Later in 2007, a cover of The Go Betweens' song Magic In Here will also appear on a Grant McLennan tribute album, Love Goes On, released on USA's Rare Victory Records. You can also currently hear one of the new songs Down To The Ocean on Siesta Records compilation Erre Que Erre. "The best Scottish pop band since Orange Juice" - Melody Maker "A blissful mix of the best Scottish bands of the last few years" - NME" "Eclectic. Every single song is a gem" - Exclaim "Luxuriant textures, immaculate pop fizz with enviable purpose" - MM "Songs of emotional wit and sparkling indie pop" - All Music Guide "Languid and alluring" - Tangents "The tension between wanting to wig out and grow more evanescent is evident" - Uncut "They brought together all the best parts of the 80's Scottish music scene, while adding something that's hard to pin down, yet made them so very special" - Exclaim!

Paley, Tom
Beware Young Ladies! (ON SALE)
PS, SWEDEN New recordings from underground folk legend Tom Paley, with special guest Bert Deivert, recorded in Sweden in early 2006. Tom has been recordings since the 50s! Tom Paley was born and raised in NYC, where he first fell in love with old-time music. He began playing guitar and 5-string banjo and quickly excelled at both instruments. He briefly performed in a duo with the great folk musician Woody Guthrie in the late 50s. Later he helped form The New Lost City Ramblers, with Mike Seeger and John Cohen. This group inspired a greater mainstream interest in traditional music. The Ramblers considered their live concerts primarily as opportunities to share great old songs they had discovered with their fellow folk performers. After The Ramblers broke up Paley formed The Old Reliable String Band (with Roy Berkeley and Artie Rose). Tom moved to Sweden, where he lived from 1963 to 1965, before moving to England where he has resided ever since. Tom continues to tour in America and Europe both solo and with other musicians.

Churning out shattered pop hits that few have the ears to comprehend, Portland, Oregon's Panther is a one-man disaster squad. The music is hard match of damaged soul, falsetto disco and broken synth fueled freakouts which is as addictive as it is challenging. Panther isn't easily ignored for his unpredictable and energetic solo performances tainted with throbbing bass, minimalistic hooks and jittery dance routines. Panther's influences run deep and take as much from Pop and R&B as Free Jazz and Punk. In the past year Panther has infiltrated MTV2 (up for Video of the Year), Spin Magazine, and modern dance academia. While touring with both Ratatat and Gossip, he has managed to polarize audiences thoroughly between the immediate super-fans and super confused gawkers. PS, US All of the songs are short stories; even if again & again the narrators voice is transmitted to the instruments, the piano, the guitars, an accordion. Ben Coopers alter ego has created a songwriter album. Or rather a song-writing album, the tracks as carefully arranged interiors, chamber folk, pocket symphonies, passionate melodies. Another one of these houses full of stories. He recorded the guitars & drum-patterns, the banjos, organs & keyboards & sang in chorus w/ himself.

Red Crayola
Soldier Talk
PS, US Having been missing in action for 28 yrs, this vital, much acclaimed work is now available again. It 1st on Radar Records & was their 1st new commercial release since 1968. It reflects the world as it sat, awash in punk rock & its cognates, dreading mass destruction. This album is petit-guignol, a travesty of expression; its screams & sighs, a theatre of terror.

Reuber
Sudpol
PS, US He creates unusual electronic pastiches that weave a massive selection of esoteric & unexpected samples into a stunning, vibrant patchwork that constantly pulls in different directions. His instinct for unusual juxtapositions goes well beyond the postmodern irony of incorporating aboriginal music into a psychedelic techno collage -- he has a true ear for combinations that work. Much like shifting curtains of the Aurora Australis, this is cosmic.

Rev, Martin
Cheyenne
PS, US Reissue, originally released in 1991 on Alive records. Part electronic rock band, part performance art project, Suicide found its home in the NYC art scene. Rev's Cheyenne is considered by some to be Suicide's second album minus vocals, but it is way more than that! It is a fantastic look into the creative process of one of the most influential & ground breaking groups/artists of all time. These finely crafted gems set the stage for what became some of Suicide's greatest material. "Rev effortlessly captures the sounds of New Yorks cavernous avenues filtering , phasing & modulating the sounds of the Empire city" -Sonic Boom. Includes 3 bonus tracks produced by Charles Ball & the Cars frontman, Ric Ocasek. LIMITED to 1000!

Revutsky, Roman
Incomplete
PS, MEXICO Roman Revutsky possesses a genuine sensibility of pop that stands either way over sad structured rock or complex electronic music sequences. Roman is a singer/songwriter who, directly from the four walls of his house in freezing Siberia, still has the warmth to keep his tender heart alive, pumping strange stories told by a soft and charming voice that will hardly be unnoticed. With a naïve attitude, Revutsky fills the gap nineties indietronica left between rock and electronic music: earnestness and reality. Though his music doesn't properly fit in that genre, Roman will probably enchant enthusiast followers of this kind of pop music with his awkwardly hypnotic lyrics. "The tracks he has recorded and made available are irresistibly charming (his voice, prominantely accented, is reserved but strangely moving, like a Siberian Stephin Merritt), and though its impossible to be sure of how his album will sound once completed, I have a hard time imagining it being anything less than stellar." PS, US Emerging from deep in the backwoods of the American subconcious, they represent the dirty south w/ their intensely unique style of acid drenched metal. Shins
From Tugboats To Polar Bears: Short films by Matt McCormick
PS, US Portland filmmaker Matt McCormick makes films that combine found and orginal sounds and images to fashion abstract and witty observations of contemporary culture. In his new documentary Towlines, Matt explores the role of the tugboat in modern society, while in The Subconcious Art of Graffiti Removal he makes the observation that the process of destroying one art form unwitingly creates another. Matt has also worked with artists and musicians including THE SHINS, MIRANDA JULY, THE POSTAL SERVICE, and CALVIN JOHNSON. 85 min/2004/DVD

PS, US This Bristol-based bedroom production virtuoso's debut is a masterful balance of songcraft & sonic manipulation. Sun Ra
Toward The Stars
PS, UK Sun Ra is simply one of the best-loved and most highly respected progressive jazz musicians in history. 'Toward the Stars' showcases' the incredible music Sun Ra was making at the outset of his career in the mid fifties. This music is decades ahead of its time. Numbers like 'Sun Song' and 'India' may owe something to Les Baxter and Martin Denny but their intonation is somehow much deeper. Sun Ra influenced Miles Davis and David Bowie and dozens upon dozens of others. In serious international jazz circles he is hardly less than a deity. The first and perhaps definitive 'independent artist'! Sway
Winter Heart EP
PS, US BLACK VINYL 180g 12". Sway are somewhat of an enigma. This much we know: they hail from Southern Callifornia; they play incredible dreampop; they are super sweet and friendly as hell, but equally elusive; they have sold through two CDEPs in no-time flat, with virtually no distribution or label backing. In fact, at press time, we are not sure if the band is still in existence (!). They have gone through a name change, briefly known as Keepee for a period of about 10 minutes, before they decide to screw that and stay Sway as they should be. Shame that there are at least a dozen other bands with the same moniker, yet all inferior. Sway are the real deal. Sway somehow creates literal LANDSCAPES of sound, with a hugely expansive sonic range that somehow makes your ears feel as though they stretch to the ends of the desert, capturing every drop of beauty with impressive clarity. Their dreamy pop songs are sheer and utter bliss Layers of guitars heap on top, both chiming and ringing, as well as gliding and effected. Ethereal male vocals make a perfect match, as they are not too strong nor too weak, and beautiful as any we've heard. The Winter Heart EP is such a wicked tease - Sway's two previous EPs were short enough as it was, leaving fans clamoring for a full length. Now, after years of silence, Sway return with the shortest EP of their career - and yet it is in that brevity that part of their brilliance lies. If anyone is not left crying - *screaming* - for more more MORE after hearing this EP, the sheer pinnacle of Sway's career, then I challenge that soul to see if they are indeed alive! It leads off with "Winter Heart", a beautiful epic number nestled perfectly into the space of just a few minutes. Side A closes out with "Days Are Long", which then leads to side B, kicking off with "Days (Reprise)", and wrapped up with "Base Audit". It's a perfect soundtrack for walking down your snowpacked street, headphones on, but feeling warm all over. Likewise, it sounds just as perfect while kicked back on the deck of your boat with 95 degree sun beaming down on your smiling face. LIMITED to 100 pink vinyl copies (mailorder-direct only), and 200 black vinyl copies, all pressed on heavy audiophile-quality 180-gram virgin vinyl. Housed in a gorgeous die-cut jacket in the Claire's Echo series by Aaron Winters, with a slip-in full color heavy card cover image of pink flowers, backed with a lovely photo of the elusive band in b&w.

Eccentric Soul: The Big Mack Label
PS, US The fourth volume in our Eccentric Soul series examines the oil stained underside of the Motor City sound. There are no gold records, million dollar buyouts, or quaint museums at the end of the story, just a handful of four figure 45s, a box of photographs, and a condemned building. If Detroit was once an ocean of soul, the Big Mack label was certainly an island. Big Mack lasted an incredible twenty years without so much as a sniff of a hit. Dogged by lack of airplay, distribution, and a general lack of understanding of the music business, the label failed on almost every level except where it counted; the music. From soulful doowop to blistering garage funk, a left at sultry R&B and then a quick dodge into budget Hendrix wailing over a steel drum break, this disc is the epitome of Eccentric Soul. Artists include Bob & Fred, the Manhattens, Edd Henry, Ms Tyree Jones, the Essence, the Performers, Mae Young, the Soul President, the Sleepwalkers, the Grand Prix's, and L. Hollis & the Mackadoos.

Revenge Of The Psychocats
PS, UK In 2003 Cherry Red Records issued the first ever DVD compilation to feature the Psychobilly genre - "Psycho Cats" (CRDVD32). Following the continuing success of this release (and many others from the Psychobilly genre) - Cherry Red are delighted to announce the release of the follow-up DVD to "Psycho Cats" - "Revenge Of The Psycho Cats". After two years of interviews, cold calls, storage spaces, half truths, unknowns, and dead ends, we've finally completed a large piece of Chicago's secret soul history. Eccentric Soul: Twinight's Lunar Rotation takes a look beyond their hit maker Syl Johnson, and instead focuses on the records that never had a shot at the charts. It's the story of struggling disc jockeys moonlighting as producers, high school talent show winners, major label cast offs, minor label upgrades, girlfriends with decent voices, and master purchases traded for chart position. It happened after midnight, and it happened right here in our backyard. Villalobos, Gina
Miles Away
PS, US Gina's nothing if not dead serious. Her music is deeply rooted in time, place, and history. She's the real thing: an artist, someone who can show you where you are. Hailed as the new "Queen of Country Rock" and seemingly out of nowhere. Gina has rapidly established a growing cult following in the UK and the US for her infectious, raw, simply irresistible, roots rock influenced songs. Knowing when to whisper and when to unleash, she finesses words into new meaning with the slightest inflection. And for her live performances, where her willingness to expose herself completely takes her audience's out of the moment, to a place up above the chaos, alone with their thoughts. Eventually nothing else exists...it is a truly transcendent experience. Though she's been knocking around the music business since the mid 90's, it wasn't until she released her critically acclaimed 'Rock N Roll Pony' in 2005 that Gina made that all important international breakthrough, with an endorsement from BBC radio 2 DJ Bob Harris - making the record a must have commodity. Avoiding the sophomore jinx, Gina's second offering succeeds. She unveiled her new album 'Miles Away' in the UK on May 8th 2006 to the same, if not more enthusiastic, critical plaudits, and support from BBC radio 2 her acclaimed predecessor, Rock N Roll Pony received. This along with a 6 week US national tour supporting World Party sets the stage for her upcoming US release of 'Miles Away', which is widely anticipated in the Americana/Alt Country circles in which she first gained attention.

Weavers, The
Hard, Ain't It Hard (The Weavers Greatest Songs)
PS, UK The Weavers - Hard, Ain't It Hard - (The Weavers Greatest Songs) "The Weavers are out of the grassroots of America. I salute them for their great work in authentic renditions of ballads, folk songs, ditties, nice antiques of word and melody. When I hear America singing, The Weavers are there." Carl Sandburg. In the (allegedly) whitebread nice-nice late 1940s early 1950s, one of the biggest hit making musical groups in the US was made up of four erm...slightly odd-looking Communist sympathisers, one of whose biggest hits was composed by a Black convicted murderer...HA! you couldn't make it up, could you?..Hmmm...That's what the FBI thought..... The Weavers had perhaps the most extraordinary musical pedigree of any group in the history of folk or popular music. More than 50 years after their heyday, however, their origins, the level of their success, the forces that cut the group's future off in its prime, and the allure that keeps their music selling are all difficult to explain < as, indeed, none of this was all that easy to explain even at the time. How could a song as pleasant and tuneful and plain NICE as "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine" be subversive? The quartet went from being embraced by the public, (selling over four million records), to being reviled and rejected over the political backgrounds of its members, and disbanding after only four years together. Yet, despite the controversy that surrounded them, and the fact that their work was interrupted at its peak, the Weavers managed to alter popular culture in about as profound a manner as any artist this side of Bob Dylan. The songs that they wrote or popularized, including "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine," "Wimoweh," "Goodnight Irene," "Wreck of the John B," "Follow the Drinking Gourd," and "On Top of Old Smoky," continued to get recorded (and occasionally to chart) 50 years after the group's own time. As a companion piece to the RevOla release of their legendary Carnegie Hall concert, here are the big hits....from the mirror-dimension period when The Weavers were a top hit group on a major label and smiled at mainstream America from every TV set....until Senator McCarthy and his ilk stepped in... Goodnight Irene / Wimoweh / When The Saints Go Marching In
