Joe Pug "Nation of Heat EP" CD5 $5.50 (Self-Released)
First song I heard by Chicago DIY-singer-songwriter Joe Pug was on our cool local radio station on a bitter cold morning. It transfixed me, immobilized me in the drivers seat with the sun blazing through the icy window, the defroster doing it's damnedest. Like The Tallest Man On Earth this dude's gonna get the "Dylan-esque" tag, and like TTMOE Joe completely surpasses easy comparison.

Akiyama/Corcoran/Kiefer
Low Cloud Means Death
PS, US "For years, I've counted Tetuzi Akiyama as one of my absolute favorite guitarists. He's been cranking out great records for ages, honing his style and skill in every possible way. Add in Christian Kiefer, who has also put out a string of magnificent releases, and a talented drummer/percussionist in Kevin Corcoran (who has appeared on releases on Weird Forest and played in Antennas Erupt!) and you've got a recipe for something magical. Low Cloud Means Death is a series of sea-inspired improvisations that are fighting a continual battle with the silence between each note. This is sparse music at its finest. Minimal notes float in the air as Corcoran lays a web of various percussion beneath the organic layer Akiyama and Kiefer weave. The instrumentation is varied -- Akiyama sticks to acoustic guitar while Kiefer splits time on accordion, piano, and other vices. What the trio produces ends up coming off like an all-improvised Morton Feldman or something of the like. This is a journey on salt-encrusted waves, traipsing through empty spaces in search of whatever aural mystery can be found. It goes something like this: Thump. Quiet again. Twang, thump. Quiet. Quiet. Still quiet. Distant blap. And let me tell you, it is one fantastic voyage. Limited to 500 copies. Artwork by Eden Hemming Rose."

Antony & The Johnsons
The Crying Light
PS, US Antony and the Johnson's breakthrough second album "I Am a Bird Now" won the UK's prestigious Mercury Prize in 2005. The success that followed introduced many to a pioneering soul singer unafraid to explore themes that traversed darkness and light, life and death, male and female. Antony's inimitable voice sparked the interest of artists ranging from Bjork to Hercules and Love Affair, resulting in a series of critically acclaimed collaborations. "The Crying Light" is the highly anticipated full-length follow-up to "I Am a Bird Now". Here, Antony shifts the thematic focus and explores his relationship with the natural world. The intimacy of the Johnsons' sound is enveloped by avant-classical composer Nico Muhly's symphonic arrangements. The record's centerpiece, "Another World" traces the singer's dispair in the face of a vanishing landscape. Antony and the Johnsons' music bridges the gap between avant-classical music and the blues, and the band's sold out performances have resulted in standing ovations from Carnegie Hall to the Apollo. "The Crying Light" is a soul-stirring new work with its daring compositions and captivating vocal performances. Antony and the Johnsons have created a subtle and timely work that brings a magical and yet changing world to the forefront of our consciousness.

Bats
Don't You Rise
PS, US The Bats are legends of New Zealand music, standing tall alongside contemporaries The Clean and The Chills as linchpins of the Flying Nun label and the Dunedin/Christchurch scene. Over the course of 25 years, 7 albums and 4 world tours, the original line-up of Robert Scott, Malcolm Grant, Paul Kean and Kaye Woodward remains intact and still creating vital pastoral pop gems. Combining Robert's mantric-like guitar pick and strum, bouncing bass with a twist from Paul, melodic hooks from Kaye on guitar and Malcolm's snappy beats, the combination of musical ingredients works perfectly - effortlessly. The band's reputation is sterling; based on legendary albums like Daddy's Highway and Silverbeet and their energetic live shows, The Bats have an enthusiastic world-wide fanbase who treasure the band's continued excellence. The Don't You Rise EP gathers up four tunes from 1998 and 2003, helping to complete the discographical picture leading up to the release of their next album, The Guilty Office, in early 2009. Featuring the electric violin on Alastair Galbraith (who last featured on The Bats' Law of Things), "That's How You'll Find Me" would fit in perfectly on any classic Bats album and mesmerized with it's folk-pop groove. "You Don't Belong" is a moody gem, while "Don't You Rise"'s country-inflected strum is a live favorite. "Face Inside The Sun" rounds out the record in fine form, a mid-tempo sing-along that sounds straight off of Daddy's Highway. A pretty special EP then, and ample evidence that 25 years after forming, The Bats still earn their legendary status. The new and next Bats full-length album, The Guilty Office, will be released by Parasol's Hidden Agenda label in May 2009!

His notable friends help Doucet bring the rich folk traditions of south Louisiana into the 21st century through the genius interplay of a new take on Cajun favorites ("Marie") & the 'Cajunization' of modern folk classics. A French language reworking of Bob Dylan's cover of Muddy Waters' classic "Rollin' & Tumblin'" ("Rouler et Tourner") & J.J. Cale's "The Problem" stand alongside Cajun & Creole history lessons like "Reel Cajun (451 St. Joseph St.)," "Les Oignons" & "Theogene Creole", originally sung for John & Alan Lomax's historic 1934 field recordings.

Besties, The
Home Free
PS, US Equally at home strumming alongside melodic pop bands and invading the occasional crusty punk show, The Besties wear their inclusiveness like a badge of honor. Like Talulah Gosh with an Athens party twang, The Besties punch out fun, loud songs high on smarts and low on snot. After touring the US and Europe several times over, the band now prepares for the release of their sophomore effort, Home Free, on Hugpatch Records. Home Free is the follow-up to the Besties' well-received debut album, Singer (Skipping Stones Records) and Rod N Reel 7" (both of which sold out). Besties Press: "There's a reason why Amelia Fletcher called her flagship twee-pop band Heavenly: its music could whisk away the cynical and melt the hardest of hearts. This Brooklyn trio chews that same pop bubblegum on its debut. Marisa and Kelly swap sugary vocals like classmates of State, vying for - what else? - the boy." - Magnet "First Exposure" "Ever since the Besties' new single dropped back in the spring, we've been smitten with their ridiculously catchy sound. And while pop-punk doesn't always shave the best connotations these days, for a group that evokes the Go-Go's recording for Epitaph, it's rather apt. - Time Out Chicago "The romance of their brand of music is thankfully outstripped by some merited musicianship, all the cooing, girly elements sullied by some real-life issue lyrics and the occasional potty mouth. This is how these kids work it out - hearts bare and spirits smiling to keep up the appearance." - Dusted Magazine

Blackout Beach
Skin of Evil
PS, US Blackout Beach is the solo nom de guerre of Carey Mercer (FROG EYES/SWAN LAKE). Skin of Evil is remarkable in the sense that a. it contains a story, and b. that it sticks to the story; a rare occurrence in these free times. "Donna" is the subject, and each of her lovers (past & present) say their peace in song (Donna gets her song, too). Composed, played & recorded entirely by Mercer alone, these songs revel in the proto-punk darkness of the heady Cleveland axis (e.g. Peter Laughner, David Thomas) with a minimal, textural & almost Suicide-ish sense of pop form & the experimental nature of contemporary Scott Walker works.

Bluethings, The
Blow Your Mind (1964-1967)
PS, US 2CD set with career-spanning 65 tracks. Previously unreleased recordings and stunning sound! A 24-page booklet details the complete career of the band and is rich in photos and recollections." "I remember going to see The Bluethings several times in the '60s in McCook, Nebraska and talking with Richard Scott as he sat on the edge of the stage during breaks. I was only 13 the first time I saw them and was knocked out by their sound. Scott was always tinkering with his Fender tube amps and played bass both right and left-handed during the same song! Mike Chapman had a Dan Electro Longhorn guitar one time and the first fuzz tone I ever heard. Bobby Day was a great drummer. Val Stecklein's voice was unforgettable. He played a Guild Bluesbird guitar and I think was a legend even back then. The Bluethings were outstanding, head and shoulders above all the other Midwest bands of that time." --A Bluethings fan.

Bon Iver
Blood Bank
PS, US The four-song Blood Bank collection continues down the path forged by 2008's critically acclaimed For Emma, Forever Ago. While still tied to the identity of the place where it was born, Bon Iver is no longer an unplanned entity synonymous with Justin Vernon. It is an idea, a place and sentiment that has now become as international as it is timeless. From the title track's remembrance of the winter warmth we seek, to the summer love tribute of b-side gem"Babys," Bon Iver's snow-blanketed harmonies live across the seasons. Still, there is a reverence for sabbatical, solitude and the winding down of time. As much as Emma is about the cold, the Blood Bank collection is about the warmth that gets you through it. You can feel the air move. Like a fire you've been stoking for hours and finally got to sustain itself, the heat blisters your face while your back is frozen solid. Bon Iver has grown to include more than what was available at the much-fabled Wisconsin cabin, such as piano, slide guitar, and vocoder. As Justin layers on harmonies in the meditative R&B a capella "The Woods," he declares "I'm building a still to slow down the time." It is as poetic as it is necessary. Both expansive and intimate, these four songs explore the darker and lighter natures of the seasons and what they signify, and offer a dynamic glimpse into the Natural energy and refined craftsmanship that characterize Justin Vernon's music.

Clue To Kalo
Lily Perdida
PS, US Satisfyingly schizophrenic, Clue To Kalo's third full-length release Lily Perdida is ten voices in one, all of them a different branch off the same electric folk tree. Amidst jangly guitar, mod ribbons of flute, and the voices of mastermind Mark Mitchell and duet partner Ellen Carey, ten musical perspectives on fictional character Lily Perdida emerge, each song from the point of view of a different person in her life. A post-modern frolic of keyboards, harpsichords and laptops, Lily Perdida is a gorgeous and sonically sprawling commentary on the nature of history and identity. Each succeeding track reinterprets, misreads or conflicts with the accounts that came before to collectively create an anti-portrait of the main character. The music ebbs and flows with the changing characters but never strays from the utterly satisfying sound we have come to expect from Clue To Kalo. Hailing from Adelaide, Australia, Clue To Kalo mastermind Mark Mitchell blends a lo-fi acoustic-folk aesthetic to computer-based production in which the technology is the means rather than the end. A generous use of layered melodies, elemental textures, and multi-tracked vocals highlight a vast range of influences and solidify the fact that Clue To Kalo is first and foremost a songwriter. In addition to many shows in Australia and Japan, Clue To Kalo has toured throughout the US and Canada, was a featured artist at the Mush 2003 CMJ and 2005 SXSW showcases, and has shared the stage with luminaries like the Greenhornes, Willowz, Death Cab For Cutie, Caribou, and many more. Inventive without being inaccessible, Clue To Kalo has established himself as a singular artist of extraordinary scope and depth.

Color Cassette
Forever Sparrow
PS, FRANCE Color Cassette was initially the project of a single musician, Jason Corder (aka OffTheSky): an old guitar and one four track recorder went head to head in their home studio of Lexington, Kentucky. But this solitary project quickly evolved into a collaborative one, in the course of casual meetings that became veritable musical interventions. In the course of four years, 14 musicians worked at the home studio. Today, Color Cassette is Jason Corder and Matt Yarington (aka Set In Sound), with various guests such as Clint Colburn (vocals), Colin Campbell (drums, vibes), Anna Hess (violin) and Jordan Munson (textures, field recordings). After Small Town Smoker, the first EP in 2008 ('single of the week' at Boomkat, reference for online mail orders), Color Cassette is now releasing their first concept album, Forever Sparrow. It tells the story of a little boy who gets lost in a magic forest, and when he is transformed into a sparrow, he chooses to stay in this extraordinary world forever. This musical journey, which evokes the themes found in Peter Pan and Alice In Wonderland, takes the shape of an acoustic collection in outlines deformed through an electronic prism. Sketched during the sunny summer afternoons of 2007, this handful of ideas metamorphosed into song-format fragments, which put forth the best part of a sound digression. They form a record that is a miniature, moving, and sometimes disturbing, odyssey. COLOR CASSETTE: Jason Corder : vocals, lyrics, vibes, melodica, drums, guitar, bass, production... Matt Yarington : production, drums, programming. Guests: Clint Colburn: vocals Colin Campbell: drums, vibes Anna Hess: violin Jordan Munson: textures, field recordings. DISCOGRAPHIE: (*ADIM = AUTRES DIRECTIONS IN MUSIC) LP/EP - "Small Town Smoker EP" (2xCDR, Mobeer (sub-label of Moteer / 2008) - "Forever Sparrow LP" (ADIM*/2008) Various / remixes - 'Here We Go Again' on "Various Artists - Assemblage Session 1 (Abandon Building Records/2005)

Danzca AKA Maxime Dangles & Paul Nazca
Speicher 63
PS, GERMANY Speicher returns to form for 2009. Feeling the urge to display a sweetened vulgarity for fully-formed techno -- Kompakt's young starlet Maxime Dangles teams up with Paul Nazca for this monstrous release. "Dark Neptune" is a bass-squelching power-rocker -- thoroughly delivering all peaks and no drifts. "Aquarel" is a more melodic affair, but pulls out all the right punches with a tangible, house-like quality. Definitely a classic approach that meets the Speicher seal of approval.

Dendoshi
Dendoshi 2
PS, ITALY Dendoshi is Keith Connolly (No Neck Blues Band), Raymond Dijkstra (Asra), Dave Nuss (No Neck Blues Band) and Timo Van Luyk (Af Ursin, In Camera). Dendoshi: "sent to propagate the ceremony" or "missionary" (Japanese). There had actually been a previous incarnation of Dendoshi (hence Dendoshi 2), which was a large group performance in New York that ventured upon elucidating the memories of a a fifty-plus foot tall dead Weeping Cherry Tree re-contextualized as a sculptural exhibit. Some thematic reference: The name 'Dendoshi' originates from the work of Japanese filmmaker Kiyoshi Kurosawa, whose films also inspired the content of the first performance. When the opportunity presented itself for Connolly, Dijkstra, Nuss and Van Luyk to come together to make a session, it was the perfect opportunity to realize Dendoshi not as a one-off performance on a theme, but as a recurring ritual in development. The resulting music widened the conceptual reflection of the band, bringing to mind the history and ideas of Franz Mesmer. Mesmer, the 18th century Austrian spiritualist healer, was among the first to put forth the theory of what he termed 'animal magnetism,' regarding a universal fluid which permeates all matter and can be influenced by the will, not dissimilar to some of Eliphas Levi's concepts. What seemed to set Mesmer apart was an attention to mood and atmosphere, an aesthetic component to what were scientifically quite dubious theories, which lent his work an aura of portent -- thus the parallel with the music captured as Dendoshi 2. Reflecting the qualities that all four musical sensibilities had in common, the album is a statement upon the ephemeral nature of atmosphere and will, and the relation of reverie to oblivion as opposed to ecstasy. The symbol, or mark on the front cover created by Connolly came intuitively and without revision. Its applied function is that of distinction rather than that of protection or as a seal. It was first applied to the photograph by Clarence H. White form 1904, where the first resonant depiction or personification of reverie and oblivion as applied to Dendoshi was found. By applying the mark, Connolly is ceremonializing the image, thus rendering it distinct from its original form, not as an appropriation, but as a recognition. The other images followed, and each of them were recognized instantly without having to search. The last was Vermeer's image from Van Luyk's basement, and upon receiving this, the series of 4 inserts was complete. There is a trace of fear and a sensation of suspended time in these images which suits the music very well. Edition limited to 300 copies with a gold cover.

Druid Perfume
S-T
PS, US Featuring three members of the PIRANHAS-one of Detroit's most infamous punk bands of the last decade-DRUID PERFUME continue the "Where the fuck are these guys coming from?" mayhem, elevating it to the next level of Weird Punk. Tropically hot in its sweaty, confident swagger their sauntering, jazzy art-skronk collides beautifully with raw, soupy Detroit punk viciousness. This five-piece eviscerates that rotting corpse of Detroit punk, dancing, marching around the body, finger-painting the funhouse walls with the entrails in a truly manic Lord of the Flies-like hysteria. PS, US Norwegian composer TOMMY JANSEN returns w/ the second installment of a trilogy for Miasmah Recordings. An incredibly accomplished body of work, its natural progression of movements transporting the listener through cinematic soundscapes & evocative passages of intense, doomladen, droning acoustic instruments. The eerie, underlying sounds taken from seemingly unrecognizable sources, add to the feelings of unresolved tension, bringing to mind the later works of Scott Walker, the slow-build of Gorecki's "3rd Symphony" & the murk of Gavin Bryars' "The Sinking Of The Titanic." He operates in the area between composed & improvised music, building bridges between classical music & dark ambient drones & textures.

'What Happened' continues their exploration in tonal beauty of their recent work that brought to mind pioneers like Tangerine Dream and Cluster, while presenting a new approach to structure that brings to mind masters like Luc Ferrari and opens our ears to a new universe full of astonishing possibilities. Eno, Brian
Ba-Benzélé/Subterraneans
PS, US Slow To Speak is a gray-area vinyl recontextualization label -- reissuing onto 12" vinyl its favorite tracks -- beyond any obvious genre or stylistic confines. All releases are compiled by Francis Englehardt and Paul Nickerson for Slow to Speak. There are have been close to 30 releases in the past, from Loggins & Messina to Haki R. Madhubuti. Packaging is often elegantly screenprinted. Although some earlier STS releases featured unique "edits", most are just album tracks pressed to vinyl to give new context and availability to classic works from the past -- listen now, ask questions later. This Eno 12" features "Ba-Benzélé" from Fourth World Vol. 1: Possible Music & "Subterraneans" from the David Bowie's Low album. "Brian Eno is one of the true pioneers of electronic music; from the very beginning of its inception, as one of the most in-demand studio producers of his era, he served as one of its most eager disseminators, accomplishing some of the first syntheses of rock, experimental and electronic music -- and delivering it to popular audiences previously unimagined before his time. In the strangely familiar alien tones & effects of the then excessively intricate and virtually inaccessible synthesizers of the early 1970s, Eno perceived in electronic production the key to popular music's transcendence, its elevation to the level of true intellectual & artistic expression -- an expanse of seemingly endless potential that allowed not only the seasoned & qualified composer to express himself through the new electronic sound, but also provided entrenched genres the opportunity to discard with their embedded orthodoxies & breathe a whole new air of life into their creative process & product. His work with avant-garde trumpet player John Hassell is a deeply inspiring example of this early pioneering. Hassell was himself obsessed with atypical scales & unfamiliar instrumentation, only in his case, he was convinced that in the most remote regions of Earth's untouched & undeveloped sonic landscape lay the most potent tools for music's superseding to the domain of sublime experiential transcendence. With Eno's prowess at the opposite end of the technological scale, the two produced some of the most wildly divergent co-existences of sound, mixing the unsettling tones miraculously produced from Hassell's trumpet -- which were for the most part, inspired by traditional forms of obscure world music -- with the strange warmth of Eno's comforting synth chords & melodic disposition to create music that is at one moment deeply warm, comforting and pleasing to the ears -- only to morph into something suspiciously unfamiliar, uncharted and singularly abrasive -- beautiful still, but unsettling nonetheless... the perfect balance. But it was Eno's work with legendary rock/pop/post-punk superstar David Bowie that demonstrated the breathtaking potential of Eno's electronic aesthetic, its integration into the most resistant of musically-opposite fields, and its true transcendent potential. 'Subterraneans' is the quintessential tragedy in song, a piece that needs no definite lyrical tale to relate its truly melancholic expression, its very notes, its distorted, shivering wails of possibly human melodic groans, its sub-bass synth pads, the only necessity for full expression: undeniably Eno's masterwork. It weeps, not through the deceiving over-intellectualization of poetry, but rather through the pure expression of tonal & melodic sound. This is the essence of Eno's contribution to modern music. Compiled by Francis Englehardt & Paul Nickerson for Slow To Speak." Silkscreened lettering on jacket with glitter.

Epic 45
Bracken / Bibio Remixes
PS, UK Tracks : A : 'You Are An Annual' remixed by Bracken B : 'Stars In Autumn' remixes by Bibio. 2 track 45rpm heavyweight 12" vinyl. "Epic 45 are those cooler than thou post-post-rock chaps who wang an album or EP out occasionally to be consumed rabidly by you, the hungry music vulture. Now they've a limited remix 12" in a variety of sleeves, one for each season of the year. I remember when we used to actually have seasons in this country rather than the schizo mulch of conditions we get these days! Bibio & Hood's Chris Adams AKA Bracken are the prizefight contenders here, Bibio's re-jig of 'Stars in Autumn' being an atmospheric brooder reminiscent of later period Boards of Canada. Building up from fractured astral wildlife effects into a spaced clanky ambler of a tune, I can also hear bits of Intricate in there, a reassuringly old skool electronic vibe, full of drifting twinkles & a shuffling phat beat. Very cinematic in places, it really sets the mood for a lazy sunny afternoon's loafing! Bracken re-shapes 'You are an Annual' into a pastoral and blissed out journey full of hesitant bass thrums, shifting, morphing effects that slip in and around the serene vocals and some impressive dubbed-out delay and phasing action! This sounds closer to his later Hood vision rather than the sonic tinkering and future pop of his solo Bracken material and should just be the icing on the cake for fans of both Hood & Epic 45! A real treat this one & we're proud to be giving it the coveted SOTW" spot!

FW are another band who traffic in the slooooooooow & heavy, but they definitely give it their own twist. Not sludgy like SUNNO))) or their legions of followers, & not really noisy like many of their countrymen. Instead they're some sort of strange downtuned slowcore mathrock. Massive basses (that's right. no guitars!) churn & throb, the drums a crushing pound, over the top, drawn out wailing 'leads', all the makings of a proper rock band, but instead they fuck it all up... laced w/ all sorts of killer melodies, making it sound like a doomed version of June Of 44 or Engine Kid"

Gil, Gilberto
Banda Um
PS, FRANCE Gilberto Gil is a legend of Brazilian music and a cultural icon in his country. From 2003 to 2008, he has served as his country's Minister of Culture in the administration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. He started out as a bossa nova musician, eventually writing songs that reflected a new focus on political awareness and social activism. He was a key figure in the Música Popular Brasileira and Tropicalismo movements of the 1960s, alongside artists such as long-time collaborator Caetano Veloso. The Brazilian military regime that took power in 1964 saw both Gil and Veloso as a threat, and the two were held for nine months in 1969 before they were told to leave the country. Gil moved to London, but returned to the Brazilian state of Bahia in 1972 and continued his musical career, as well as working as a politician and environmental advocate. Gil's musical style incorporates an eclectic range of influences, including rock, Brazilian genres including samba and forró, African music, and reggae. This Iris 'best-of ' collection includes some of Gil's most popular songs, most of which were recorded in the '80s.

Ielasi, Giuseppe
Aix
PS, US Aix is the latest work from Italian artist Giuseppe Ielasi and the follow-up to 2007's August (12k, 12k1044). With Aix we see Ielasi building his layered, atmospheric music around rhythmic grids. Most of the time these are quite irregular and the pulses are not necessarily stable or clear. Where his previous work approached sound in a linear fashion Aix imposes a strong vertical development with the aforementioned grid and a production consisting of ons and offs, employing as much improvisation as Ielasi's previous work, but in a different way. Despite the self-imposed grid structure, Aix relies heavily on randomization. Not in the traditional sense of sound placement but instead of the specialization of sounds, echoes, reverbs and the stereo image. As a result, Aix has an amazing sense and clarity of space as the small fragments of sound breathe and find their own place in the mix, thanks to Ielasi's sublime skills as a mixer and engineer. Ielasi relied heavily on numerous short samples and combining them in ways that fell into his groove; some found from others' recordings and many more recorded during the past year. We hear fragments of percussive (acoustic) objects, drums, piano, trumpet, guitar, and, of course, synthetic textures. Although there is a distinct rhythmic pulse to Aix, Ielasi manages to mold it into something wonderfully languid and warm... and strangely inviting.

Jeremy Jay
Love Everlasting
PS, US 4 songs: Love Everlasting · Lite Beam · Jet Stream · Love Everlasting (Winter Version) It was winter outside and something was happening in the storybook world of Jeremy Jay's psyche. While working on his upcoming full-length Slow Dance [KLP197] (to be released in spring '09), there was an icicle-caked excitement that resulted in a snow-flurry of extra recordings. The cozy, insulated vibe of Olympia, Washington and Dub Narcotic Studio took hold and Jeremy, along with Ilya Malinksy (guitar), Nick Pahl (drums) and Derek James (bass) crafted "Love Everlasting" [KLP202] a separate 12" single. These extra songs, recorded with a fiery compulsion, were written in Jeremy's Los Angeles apartment and expanded in studio. The song "Lite Beam" took shape with a solarized hi-hat and synth bass - a real disco dance cut; "Jet Stream," has that special synth bass that propels it to a dance floor climax, and the single itself, "Love Everlasting," twinkles magnificently with a sensual glide. Jeremy Jay and his band have toured extensively across the U.S.A., Europe and Australia in support of his recent album A Place Where We Could Go [KLP187] and will be reacquainting the U.S. with their icy soundscapes after the release of this 12" single. "Part poet, part '50s teen idol and part ghost, Jeremy Jay [takes listeners to] a place where girls have fairytale looks and candied apples are served for lunch, where dreams, fantasies and movies collide, and where Gene Vincent, Buddy Holly, Morrissey and Alan Vega are loved equally. It's no surprise that Jay calls his hometown of Los Angeles 'the City of Angels' -- he's a true romantic and sensualist, transforming his surroundings into a glamorous, magical reality." - All Music Guide

Judys, The
Moo [re-issue]
PS, US The original 'Moo' album finally re-issued on CD for the first time! CD sports seven bonus tracks, mainman David Bean's "Modomusic" EP. Released almost four years to the day after Washarama and following an eighteen month hiatus, The Judy's Moo album has a slightly more progressive sound: richer production values, fuller arrangements and thicker harmonies. As the band returned to the stage in 1985, this was the album that showed the band's maturity and development as songwriters and musicians. The twelve songs on Moo, laced with solid-state irony, well-placed cynicism and standard issue Judys' wit, show the band at the peak of their creativity and acted as a springboard for their live extravaganzas. The album was released with The Moo Tour - a month of live performances across the state which included giant cereal boxes, moving conveyer belts of milk cartons, and a dancing cow while the band donned milkman uniforms. Critically acclaimed and fan-revered, The Moo Album continues to be a milestone in Texas pop music.

Judys, The
Land Of Plenty [re-issue] (
PS, US First ever official release for The Judys last album, recorded but never released! In 1990, The Judy's set out to record a new album with a new Judy's sound. Featuring the lineup that had been established over a number of years the band, including Barbara Donaho (keyboards/guitars), Lee Malone (bass), and Darwin Keys (drums), set out to explore new horizons musically and thematically. Land of Plenty injected multi-layered keyboards and guitars, stacked vocals, a gospel choir, and even a bit of banjo into the band's palatte and sought to realize Bean's vision of a new Americana musical landscape. Broad in its scope and daring in its expansion of the band's definition of itself, Land of Plenty was shelved when the group disbanded before the CD's release. While a handful of copies have been given out, this is first time this long sought-after project has been available to the general public.

Kick that Habit
Peter Liecht w/ Voice Crack
PS, US This 1989 film collects samples from the land-and-soundscape, underscoring in the process the oft-ignored industrial underpinning of our latter-day culture. Voice Crack, the everyday household electronics duo of Norbert Moslang & Andy Guhl, are part Licechti's vision with exploration of their musical workings . Whether clicking quietly & rhythmically or humming & shrieking at ear-splitting volume, their recycled electronics produce innovative sounds and provide an appropriate accompaniment in this cinematic search for the detritus of our culture, the lost & destroyed remains of the last century of progress. A short, tense film comprised of flashing images: footage of Voice Crack rehearsals & concerts is juxtaposed with visual shards of the fall & winter landscape of the area between Alpstein and the Bodensee. Utilizing color & black-and-white footage as well as combining the visual & the acoustic in an expression that subtly synthesizes the two, Liechti delineates a world of existence through sound & geography. KK Null
Oxygen Flash
PS, US K.K. NULL (aka KAZUYUKI KISHINO) was born in Tokyo, Japan. The composer, guitarist, singer, mastermind of ZENI GEVA, and electronic wizard is one of the top names in Japanese noise music and, in a larger context, one of the great cult artists in experimental music since the early '80s. After playing the guitar as his main instrument for some twenty years, Null has gradually moved toward a more electronic approach. In recent years, he has concentrated his efforts on his solo and collaborative recordings, exploring the outer territories of electronica via intense, clashing waves of noise, structured electro-acoustic ambience, broken-down rhythmics, scattered pitch sculptures, and droning isolationist material which one could loosely describe as cosmic noise maximal/minimalism. The nine-track Oxygen Flash is the most recent addition to this remarkable catalog.

Fantasy Black Channel
PS, US Following massive UK acclaim and extensive overseas touring (including a triumphant US debut at CMJ in NYC), Nottingham's Late Of The Pier are ready to unleash their genre-busting debut album Fantasy Black Channel on the US. At once darkly chaotic and unabashedly pop, Late Of The Pier's music is almost impossible to describe, pushing stylistic boundaries to the edge of no control. Produced by superstar DJ-producer Erol Alkan, Fantasy Black Channel is huge in both scope and ambition, an exuberant rush of glam, psychedelia,nu-wave, dancepunk, metal and madcap sci-fi experimentation. Not every band can throw shards of Zappa, Queen, Eno-era Roxy Music, Prince, Gary Numan, DFA, Bloc Party and The Klaxons into a blender and come out with something as defiantly unique and grandly anthemic. Majesty Crush
I Love You In Other Cities: Best of... 1990 - 1995
PS, US Led by the bizarre DAVID STROUGHTER (P.S. I Love You), Majesty Crush was one of the more obscure but essential shoegazing groups to rise out of the short-lived U.S. scene in the early '90s. Hailing from Detroit, Michigan USA, Majesty Crush was comprised of lead singer David Stroughter, bassist Hobey Echlin, guitarist Michael Segal and drummer Odell Nails III. While incorporating the same lush, dreamy sound as other shoegazer acts of the time, it was the lyrics of Majesty Crush songs that set them apart from all other artists of the genre. Stroughter's often strange and obsessive lyrics cover such subjects as stalking Jodie Foster (No. 1 Fan), torture (Boyfriend), a female cashier at an adult book store (Sunni Pie), actresses (Uma), tennis stars (Seles) and Italian porn stars (Cicciolina). Majesty Crush released only one major album, Love 15, in 1993. Among their notable releases are 1992's No. 1 Fan and 1994's Sans Muscles." The band broke up in the mid 1990s. Lead singer Stroughter went on to form a similar outfit called P.S. I Love You and drummer Nails went on to perform with Astrobrite and Robin Guthrie of the Cocteau Twins.

Makoto, Kawabata
Rainbow Of Love
PS, UK Blackest Rainbow Records is extremely pleased to announce this one. Brand new solo record from one of the most prolific Japanese recording artists around right now. Most people will know Kawabata Makoto as the guitar-wielding shredder from Acid Mothers Temple. This brand new solo recording is a two piece epic of some of the most beautiful tones I've heard in a while. Side A's 'You Are From The Rainbow Over The Sea' is a piece of bowed beauty, taking you to a higher plain of consciousness. The B-side's 'Waiting For You Till The End Of The Rainbow' is just as cosmic as its predecessor, with cascading waterfalls of tones washing over you again and again. Kinda reminds me of some of the Inui series, which is probably some of my favorite material from Makoto. Edition of only 300 copies.

A Picture of this record should be next to every definition of Noise music. Lasse Marhaug plays in Jazkamer and has at least 300 other great projects solo and with other people. Dror Feiler served as a paratrooper in the Israel Defense Forces, and refused to serve in the occupied territories in the early 70's. He is now a Swedish-Israeli musician and artist and has been living in Stockholm, Sweden since 1973. He is active as a composer of modern music and enjoys giving ear problems and headaches to classically trained musicians. The most brutal vinyl record you will hear this year.

Mateo, Eduardo
Mateo Solo Bien Se Lame
PS, CANADA Mateo Solo Bien Se Lame is a record that requires many superlatives in order to do it justice: from its first moments, the music is lilting, poetic, intimate, in turns life-affirming and melancholic, with pulsating percussion backed by unheard-of guitar chords and tunings (perhaps the reason for the frequent Caetano Veloso and Nick Drake comparisons); it is an album that sounds, simply put, honest. The record was released at the end of 1972 in both Argentina and Uruguay, and was received from that first moment as a classic in those countries, a position it still occupies today. When El Kinto co-founder and iconoclastic maniac Eduardo Mateo traveled to Buenos Aires in October of 1971 to record what came to be Mateo Solo Bien Se Lame, his situation was unusual. With the explosion of candombe-beat music on the popular scene, Mateo had become a living legend of Uruguayan music. Yet apart from the Musicasi 4 1/2 compilation, which had been released in July of that year, there were no published recordings of Mateo available, whether as a soloist or with his already dissolved group El Kinto. By this time, the public had a clear notion of the dreamy character of Mateo that by the end of his brief life had made him a part-time panhandler and apparent acid casualty. But they still wanted a record by him. It was singer Diane Denoir who gave the final push. She was in Argentina finishing a record for the De la Planta label that included eight songs written by Mateo. Denoir insisted that Mateo participate as arranger for three of these grooves. With Mateo in Buenos Aires, the owners of De la Planta decided to take the necessary steps to record him. This was not easy, as Mateo tried to erase everything he recorded as soon as it was put onto tape, and that only on the rare occasions when he showed up ready to play. In the end, engineers Carlos Pariz and Eduardo Rozas selected material for the album from hours of free improvisations, and formed the album as it appears today. Our first Lion Productions volume of Mateo's solo recordings includes the entire Mateo Solo Bien Se Lame album, plus a variety of tracks from Mateo's early solo years. The eight bonus tracks include songs originally issued in Uruguay on the legendary Musicasi 4 1/2 LP, two tracks live from a bowling alley (!), as well as four very special early recordings backing female singers: two sung by the lovely Diane Denoir, and two by the mysterious Veronica Indart. Special slip-case edition comes with an oversize 48-page full-blown booklet packed with photos, text, and lyrics, which tries to unravel some of the myth surrounding this great surrealist poet and drug casualty, whose decline and ultimate madness and early death have done nothing to diminish his stature as one of the greatest artists in South American music.

Music Go Music
Warm In The Shadows
PS, US Warm in the Shadows rounds out the trio of three-song 12" singles that Music Go Music have released over the course of 2008-09. It's both a fitting end-piece to the trilogy and a remarkable expansion of the group's sonic and emotional breadth. There is a casual but undeniable magic to these songs, and it flows around and out of each note of every melody. Title song "Warm in the Shadows" is dance music, as envisioned by a group with a greater allegiance to pop archetypes than to the hymns of the dance-floor. It's a step in a different direction; an invitation to shake, coupled with a gentle evocation of the pain of wrecked love ("what kind of heart would break so easy as my own"). It's a case history and a cure for both the lovesick and the lovesick-to-be. The B-side offers up stories of exotic depravity consuming itself in ways both savage and deceptively elegant. The gypsy rhythms of "Thousand Crazy Nights" undergird a tale of dog piled revelers instructed to "feel with your face, let eyes be your hands" whilst "trapped in desire's aggro dance.""Love,Violent Love" is a psychedelic voyage through a land of raving mobs who "spiral past control" once their love is at last requited. This collection of songs is further proof of the power of the transformative embrace in which Music Go Music holds what is dear to them, and the singular vision that they impart to it.

Music Lovers, The
Masculine Feminine
PS, US 'Masculine Feminine' is the third long-playing record from acclaimed San Francisco-based pop-sophisticates The Music Lovers and the pinnacle of their artistic endeavors. The Music Lovers are led by transplanted Englishman songwriter Matthew Edwards. Edwards refers to 'Masculine Feminine' as his own personal 'Day of the Locust', a travelogue through the underbelly of the almost-famous doyens of LA and San Francisco. Like a toxic Graham Greene on a tear, Edwards speaks of motels, love-affairs, addictions, vamps and ingénues, pausing on occasion to look back on a half remembered England and wonder what went wrong (or right)? These are desperate songs born of need and frustration, but never dreary, never self-pitying. Rather, they show a formidable spirit of abandon - an abandon to the pop aesthetic; saddling the darkest sensibilities and wickedest proclivities to the sweetest pop-song frame-works. The music? The girl-group sound on a dreary Tuesday morning in 1976... quietly exultant on a radio in Birmingham. Serge and Stax and The Go-Betweens and Dusty and Lerner and Lowe, dammit! If David Goodis had written lyrics for Carole King they might have sounded a little like this record. Yes, they are all 'love songs' but not only to people, but places, states of mind and to divine release. 'Masculine Feminine' is battered, inebriate, sensual and defiantly and unfashionably romantic! Praise for The Music Lovers: "Gin-spritzed string arrangements and cocktail-bar melancholy, [that comes] off like a Rat Pack version of Lloyd Cole." - WORD "Hints of '60s AM-radio fodder regularly poke through the creamy, dreamy layers of piano, acoustic guitar, concertina, strings and mellotron, and the results are seductive." - MAGNET "The Music Lovers sound is lush and voluptuous, making me think of clouds and rain, strings and guitars, both orchestral and earthy, akin to the sublime pleasure of holding your head in my lap, oh my beautiful one." - comedian MARGARET CHO

My Cat Is An Alien's new surprising master work is a concept-album split with their side project Praxinoscope. As always, in a world full of compromises, MCIAA represent fierce independence and complete freedom. Take Roberto's own words in the liner notes as the best introduction to this work: "One day we realized it was no more possible to discern archaic art and post-modern art in our palette; it was clear that they were both reflected in the same hall of mirrors. In other words, alien art and archaic art are the same thing. All archaic art deals with death, sex, transcendence and Eternity. We're all living days suspended in the Void. The difference is in consciousness: this is real artists' duty. Beyond and other than this, only oblivion."

Nautilus & Ben Nash
Split
PS, UK Nautilus is the solo project of Heidi Diehl of Vanishing Voice/Time Life, long-time BR transatlantic e-mail buddy who we finally got to meet just over a year ago on the very brief Vanishing Voice tour. Since then, she has begun recording solo material under this alias, and has self-released one CD-R which blew our minds, and likewise blew local long-time BR friend Ben Nash's cranium apart. The Nautilus side opens with 'Still Rings,' a far-out trip of weirdo outsider dripping mind-fuzz, like some kind of spatial insect gathering. 'Tallahasse Woman' rings more bells with the sound of Vanishing Voice and Heidi's psychedelic string playing, and subtle vocals buried below it. 'Jeans Theme' is another sweet track of tranced-out guitar with approaching percussion and waves of vocal drones. Ben Nash holds his side with two nearly 8-minute tracks, opener 'Plymouth Bredren Blues' has definitely got the blues -- as mentioned in the title, there's some serious woe in the wah right here, and some almost Paris, Texas moments. 'Interloper/Latch' also starts off pretty bluesy, but halfway through goes to a speaker-shredding guitar shaker, with some seriously serious riffs, that are almost breaking up as they begin, and then reverting back to the blues mediation of the beginning of the track. A great release, in an edition of 300 copies.

Neung Phak
S-T
PS, US Not only will listening to this music take your mind off how you'll manage paying off your debts and surrendering your soul to the ruling elite, but its almost a soundtrack manifesto justifying a great "career move" where you can uproot your pathetic and truly meaningless life in Western society and relocate to the great inner-peninsula of Southeast Asia. This is what you could be listening to when you move into that cheap apartment overlooking the Chao Phraya River: some roots "Molarm beat" from the Lao countryside, creamy Khmer ballads and Cambodian Rock, with a dash of Bangkok big city pop. Dig this template of tropical seduction, from rural to urban, through thick sewage and pristine rice paddies, side-steppin' the sex tourist industry just enough to make this disc legal to purchase. On second thought, stay where you are and don't ruin it for the rest of us whose souls are firmly embedded in the great tunnels beneath the underground cities of Angkor stretching their way to the sewers of Soi Cowboy. Newman, A.C.
Get Guilty
PS, US The second solo album from A.C. Newman, leader and songwriter behind The New Pornographers, finds the pop songsmith in decidedly more upbeat and guitar heavy form than on the last NP's album. "Get Guilty" is a set of layered pop songs of great melodic and lyrical depth. "A.C. Newman deserves every last bit of praise thrown his way. In a better world, he would be our Elton, our Todd, our McCartney" - All Music Guide.

PS, US Long overdue compilation of pretty much all of the 1980-81 recordings by the first all girl Dutch Punk band. I love records and I love collecting records, but I don't have the time or money for all of the records that I want so when someone does a right on comp like this I get pretty excited. This is a really great treat. Don't pass it up.

Nomad
Cats and Babies
PS, JAPAN Nomad (Cavemen Speak, Gunporn) finally comes back with his 2nd album called "Cats and Babies" . His debut album called "Lemon Tea" (2006) was critically acclaimed as "bedroom hip hop folk". He was doing between rapping and singing so he was described as "rapper songwriter". With this album, he's become a singer songwriter. He did all by himself in his small bedroom, like songwriting, recording and playing all the instruments (guitar, piano, drums, glockenspiel etc. ) as well as the artwork. Beautiful melodies and fragile fairy voice and witty but intelligent lyrics. You will never forget his voice when once you listen. His music has magic.

Novi_Sad
Jailbirds
PS, US Limited to 500 copies and housed in our plastic-free gatefold sleeves with spine. art design by cs08. Novi_sad's work came to our attention via our good friend Susanna Bolle (Non-Event and Rare Frequency) in Boston. A superbly keen ear, Bolle felt that his work and our label should connect. Though Nov-Sad's has only a few years of practice behind him, the quality and maturity of all of his efforts is striking. The proposed Jailbirds material for Sedimental was totally complete and not only of the highest quality but also of a truly unique vision. What is significant in his work is the multiplicity of its action on the listener. It is a density of sound, acting in three-dimensions, not as auditory "sound effect" but as music with depth both physically and in functionality. Its intensity and purposefulness based in specific conceptual foundations and enhanced by a mastery (and transcendence) of technical means collapses amplified environmental recordings, drone manipulations, structured ambient soundscapes, microtones and overtones into unified whole. Sedimental is truly excited to be an early anchor of this young composer and sound artist's serious oeuvre. Novi_sad (Thanasis Kaproulias, b. 1980) is a graduate student from the Economic University of Piraues. He lives and works in Athens, Greece where he began generating sounds in 2005. His debut album Misguided heart pulses, a hammer, she and the clock received worldwide critical acclaim. Recently, Novi_sad did a recording session at the prestigious VPRO studios in Amsterdam, for the Dutch National Radio which will be released by Staalplaat [NL] in the Mort Aux Vaches series. A recent piece called Dramazon is available on TouchRadio from the publishing house Touch [U.K]. He is currently working on a project based on various methods of audio analysis called Sirens in which he explores the aesthetics of information on sound by using quantitative data from major stock market crashes in history.

Null, KK
Oxygen Flash
PS, US After playing the guitar as his main instrument for some twenty years, he has gradually moved toward a more electronic
approach. In recent years, he has concentrated on exploring the outer territories of electronica via intense, clashing waves of noise, structured electro-acoustic ambience, broken-down rhythmics, scattered pitch sculptures, & droning isolationist material which one could loosely describe as cosmic noise maximal/minimalism.

Inside Wino Lodge
PS, US Limited to 300 copies. New solo LP of strange sounds, vocal improvisations, strings, tape manipulations and hiss drones from Dylan Nyoukis (Decaer Pinga, Blood Stereo) inside his wino lodge. Sounds like it was recorded in a 4 track in 1972 in an insane asylum, then puke over and thrown into the sea, then discovered recently and transfer directly to Vinyl via marine analog tape communication device. Good one to buy as well if you are wondering what a naked Scottish man and his daughter look and sound like.

Odyssey
Live at Levittown Memorial Auditorium: 1974
PS, CANADA A live recording that was never really meant to be, recorded by Odyssey's sound engineer on a portable cassette recorder, and recently unearthed! Live at Levittown is the only document of Odyssey as they were in their progressive phase, just before Fred Callan and sometime Odyssey keyboardist Tom Doncourt recorded their legendary album as Cathedral (Stained Glass Stories). Bonus tracks include three cassette 'basement recordings' from the Setting Forth era -- two untitled originals that never made the album, plus the band's version of 'Whiter Shade of Pale'. All tracks have been salvaged as well as possible from the original sources but keep in mind these are not 'audiophile' quality! Twelve-page booklet has a continuation of the Odyssey story by band leader Vinny Kusy, as well as more rare photos from his own archive.

Of
Rocks Will Open
PS, US Loren Chasse is responsible for a whole host of vital albums. He was a founding member of the Jewelled Antler label and has sparked so many great moments from the likes of Thuja, The Blithe Sons, Softwar, and of course his main solo guise, Of. For years, this project has evolved into something of absolute magical grandeur. Rocks Will Open is the latest opus in Chasse's catalog. The music on this album is as organic as it gets. Each tone, each sound feels like it has been culled directly from the Earth's crust. Gentle drones arc toward the hazy sunlight, flickering like distant birds sailing out over the sea. Between the ghostly echoes rises a cacophony of plucked strings dancing toward oblivion. Loren Chasse's vision is perfectly expressed on Rocks Will Open. Limited to 500 copies.

O'Malley, Stephen
Keep an Eye Out!
PS, US Table of the Elements continues to celebrate its 15th anniversary with the tenth installment in its Guitar Series Vols. 3 & 4. It's a 12xLP romp of deviant fretnoise by some of experimental music's most prominent players, including Christian Fennesz, Thurston Moore, and Sunn O)))'s Stephen O'Malley. Sunn O))) founder Stephen O'Malley summons a mesmerizing drone, absorbing the listener into an aural tar pit of deep, inexorable oblivion. He wears a cloak of post-metal allegiances with behemoths like Earth, but beneath that, there is a vibrant body of work that owes as much to the heady minimalism of Tony Conrad and Steve Reich. Constantly pushing at the extremes of volume and duration, O'Malley's sound is a physical phenomenon, infused with an intimidating power - and possessing, at its core, an oddly meditative tranquility. "The supremacy of Table of the Elements for the past decade as an unwavering outpost of ultra-experimental strains can be attributed to its concomitant adherence to valiance. Most of the Table of the Elements catalogue has no broad commercial appeal, and many of its projects - scores for films directed by early-60s Conrad associate Jack Smith or a 3xCD box set by an unknown two-guitars-and-drums trio from Atlanta - are risky ventures, even with respect to the experimental marketplace. Yet, this philosophy of risk works because everyone associated with the label feels like they're doing important work releasing important records, and they're willing to go for broke to make it happen." -PITCHFORK "Table of the Elements [are] fearless purveyors of the wildest stuff around." -KYLE GANN (NEW YORK TIMES)

Ophiucus
S-T
PS, CANADA Ophiucus may be the name of an obscure constellation, but it's also the name of a French band that recorded an exceptional album in 1972 for the Barclay label. All the members of the band had already enjoyed ample success in music before musician/actor Emmanuel Booz brought them together in 1971: Jean-Pierre Pouret was a well-known session-man for Sylvie Vartan; brothers Alain and Bernard Labacci released albums as Tom & Jerry, and supported Jimi Hendrix for a TV appearance; Michel Bonnecarrere had founded the band Zoo (one of Andy Votel from the B-Music label's favorites), and was one of the composers, arrangers and musicians for that group's first two albums. Apropos of the period, the band members decided to live together as a small family in Flagy, a small town in France, where they lived a happy life and wrote the tracks which adorn this reissue. This ambitious album somehow manages to blend grungy psychedelic rock, acoustic blues and densely orchestrated French pop/psych (in an Ilous & Decuyper vein) into an impressive and cohesive whole. Sandy Spencer, cellist and member of Mormos contributed wonderful playing on 'Ne Cherche Plus' and 'Inachevée.' This reissue includes the original album plus eight bonus tracks in English meant to be the basis of an international album that was never issued. A fulsome 28-page booklet includes band history and commentaries on the songs written by Ophiucus, photos, lyrics (French and English), and a contemporary review.

O'Rourke, Jim & Loren Connors
Two Nice Catholic Boys
PS, US These two nice Catholic boys, Loren Connors and Jim O'Rourke, met at the crossroads each night during a 1997 European tour. By this time O'Rourke had reissued Connors' seminal heartbreak album In Pittsburgh on his Dexter's Cigar label and was preparing to produce the guitarist's big-band mash-up Hoffman Estates with Alan Licht. Together, Connors-O'Rourke unravel slow motion Venusian style blues across three extended pieces to thundering, feedback splattered grooves. The spontaneous melodies shift from devastating, country road intimacy to hypnotic over-amped rock. It's ferocious, epic, and an utter beauty capable only from two who know themselves and each other all too well. This live CD is only the second duo release by these musical partners despite performing together since the mid-90s. During the past decade, O'Rourke has repeatedly returned to hours of recordings captured across Europe to select these 47 minutes.

Palestine, Charlemagne
Sound 1
PS, ITALY As the title well underlines, Sound 1, electronic sonority is a starting point in Charlemagne Palestine's research for the Golden Sonority. Previously unpublished, this radical and fundamental work has now been released on LP record in collaboration with the New Media Dept. of Centre Pompidou (National Museum of Modern Art) in Paris for the first 'Oeuvres Sonores' event, December 15th, 2008. Charlemagne Palestine started to dream of an expressive, continuous, ever-moving, ever-changing sound-form; an enormous sonorous 3-dimensional sculptural canvas in mid-air, using electronically-produced sounds. At first, he began experiments with simple sine tone generators, emitting the purest sound waves without any overtones. Then, gradually, with access to Moog and arps, he constructed sounds using the sine/sawtooth/square wave oscillators in a fluid, ever-changing mix of adding or filtering overtones and white noise to create sonorities constantly changing timbres and weight. Palestine experimented in this way from 1964 till 1974 in NYC and then, in California. Finally, he assembled his own drone machine of 16 ultra stable oscillators designed by Serge Tcherepnin and 4 band pass filters designed by Donald Buchla. He would build up a sound, oscillator by oscillator, then add ever-so-slightly to the oscillator input, tiny increments of white noise that would gradually make the sounds thicker and thicker, until they were immense, sacred machines humming like gargantuan Tibetan bees. Charlemagne played them very, very loud, making all the room and objects in it resonate, while outside all was quiet and sleeping. He worked like a painter with a palette and a canvas and he mixed and added and mixed and added over, entire nights, mixing, adding, and then lying on the mattress and listening and fine-tuning. Finally, at a certain point, after several nights, the sonority seemed ready to record. He'd put on the tape, prepare the tape machine with the proper level as not to overload it, and record the texture. This 1-sided LP was issued in an edition limited to 500 copies." Includes a 25-page program booklet, including an essay by Charlemagne Palestine and artwork by John Giorno.

Parenthetical Girls
Safe As Houses [re-issue]
PS, US "THERE'S BLOOD BETWEEN MY LEGS, AND IN THE GRASS OUTSIDE YOUR HOUSE I CAME." With this goose-pimplingly visceral couplet begins the fragile journey of Safe As Houses, the second album from experimental Northwestward pop band Parenthetical Girls. Though some two years past between the initial release of the (((GRRRLS))) LP (Parenthetical Girls' debut album, recently reissued on Slender Means Society), Safe As Houses' narrative begins precisely where that album left off-on the same sweat-and-menstrual-blood-soaked summer lawn that so tenderly concluded their debut-but this time from a harrowingly different perspective. "Love Connection, pt. 2" cements the somber, ostensibly sinister narrative tone that shrouds much of Safe As Houses, while simultaneously establishing the tremendous sonic leap the band undertook in their two years of relative quiet. From there, the record leaps into an altogether different sort of narrative-one anchored in the surprising confidence of words-singer Zac Pennington's plainspoken and startlingly corporeal apparitions. Unsettling and beautiful in equal measure, Pennington's a-linear narrative weaves the surprisingly evocative mythology that cradles the record's kitchen-sink experimentation. Recorded with the band's previous three-piece configuration (an ensemble made up of Pennington and Dead Science members Sam Mickens and Jherek Bischoff-a regular contributor to Xiu Xiu and Casiotone For the Painfully Alone, who also served as producer for the record), Safe As Houses embraces the group's shrewd attention to the awkward confluence of experimental and pop musics-creating a record that is at once more difficult and more intrinsically palatable (not to mention significantly darker) than anything so far bearing the Parenthetical Girls name. Which is to say, it's much better.

Parenthetical Girls
(((GRRRLS))) [re-issue]
PS, US The cumbersome history of the (((GRRRLS))) LP begins sometime in 2002, when two childhood friends began a home recording project in a failed milltown of Everett, Washington. Compiling an innocent assortment of equipment (bass synthesizer, ill-tuned guitar, analog tape delay, and glockenspiel), Pennington and thencollaborator Jeremy Cooper embarked on a course to emulate the spirit of their mutual musical interests, which at the time primarily included the likes of Brian Eno, Pete Kember, Phil Spector, and the early Rough Trade catalog. Over the following year, the clunky results were compiled onto a low bias cassette tape (split into a strained eight tracks) and labeled "Parenthetical Girls". This cassette was mixed down to a single copy, the original tape promptly lost. A year or so later--with the help of considerably more capable hands (namely the Dead Science's Jherek Bischoff and Xiu Xiu's Jamie Stewart- Pennington set about digitally (and heavily) retrofitting the original recordings into seven proper compositions. To further complicate matters, Pennington commissioned Bischoff and Stewart to complete two radically different sets of mixes for the songs-which have since become respectively known as the "O" and "X" versions of the record. But now it's four years on. In that time, Parenthetical Girls have released two more critically-acclaimed full lengths (2006's Safe As Houses [Slender Means Society] and this year's Entanglements [Tomlab]), toured the US and Europe with the likes of Deerhoof, Xiu Xiu, Los Campesinos!, Evangelicals, and Casiotone For the Painfully Alone (whose album Etiquette, incidentally, features a rather lovely cover of (((GRRRLS)))' closing track "Love Connection"). We are pleased to finally present (((GRRRLS))) with the wide distribution that it deserves for the first time. In an attempt to maintain the distinct duality of the LP release, the CD version of (((GRRRLS))) features both editions of the album-but in two different, enhanced CD formats: version "O" (as mixed by Jherek Bischoff) plays on any standard CD player like your average CD should, while the "X" version (as mixed by Jamie Stewart), takes advantage of the near ubiquity of the iPod revolution by offering its tracks as super high quality MP3s, accessible via any computer. (Confused? Me too. Just put it in your computer-you'll figure it out). Additionally, the enhanced materials feature "Inspirational Shortpants (avec paroles)," a track not available on the original vinyl release.

Payne, Adam
Organ
PS, US Were you one of those kids who was distraught after discovering Black Flag was more influenced by ZZ Top and The Grateful Dead than The MC5 or Stooges? Well, you might wanna strap on a stronger carabiner before scaling these cliffs because you're more likely to discover pop gems than a stoned mystic in a cave. Organ is an anthem of Southern California patriotism with all the thrills of dragging in Lodi and peyote-munched soul-wandering in Silver Lake. This album is power-pop perfection, the Paisley Underground finally done right. There's a big difference between playing every instrument and being a one-man band. Suffice it to say that ADAM PAYNE (RESIDUAL ECHOES) is a one-man band akin to Emitt Rhodes broadcast over solid-state transmitters. Maybe Grant Hart has the better voice while Bob Mould churned out better lyrics. What if the Kirkwoods melded into a creature that couldn't punch itself? Adam Payne, as one band, has made an LP that matches the chops and hooks of Captain Trundlow's Sky Company or the bits of The Only Ones that are consistently lifted. The rumors that Payne was asked to produce the next Mudcrutch album have yet to be confirmed. Organ opens like Up The Academy but ends like Zabriskie Point in frustrated abandon that only leaves the listener wiser. Includes a free MP3 download.

Polansky. Larry
The Theory Of Impossible Melody
PS, US Performed by Jody Diamond, Chris Mann (voice); Phil Burk and Larry Polansky (live computers, fretless electric guitars); Robin Hayward (tubas). "Among the lineages of knowledge that Larry Polansky (b. 1954) has woven together in his creative work, as both a composer and theorist, have been mathematics, intonation theory, cybernetics, systems theory, artificial intelligence, musicology (both Western and non-Western), American Sign Language, and Jewish mysticism. He has combined these and many other fields of study together into some of the most important music written by anyone of his generation while retaining status as the composer who is most worthy of being called a true theorist. In many ways, his compositions are themselves injunctive demonstrations of his theoretical insights that stand as critiques of the theoreticism that is now endemic to the art world. This intellectual integrity and facility has also been responsible for one of the most interesting characteristics of Polansky's compositional output. His music is one of the most successful, and rare, examples of a confluence between two, generally conflicting, 20th century musical streams. Like his mentor, James Tenney -- and many other late 20th century experimental masters who were inspired by the aesthetic innovations of Cage -- Polansky creates musical expositions of phenomenal reality. Sometimes these are based in psychoacoustic science, and sometimes they are grounded in mathematical formalisms. Sometimes they explore both at once. What he also manages to do -- and this is where he succeeds at the above-mentioned confluence -- is so often reveal these concepts within an expressive musical frame that is strongly linked to more traditional musical values."

Psychic Ills
Mirror Eye
PS, US "Psychic Ills have that dance band by accident thing going for them in a big way. Everything about them is bewitching, really, evacuating, an unlikely future-primitive grind." - Village Voice "This NYC quartet set their stall somewhere between oceanic guitar abstraction and the brittle crunch of psychedelic guitar rock, feeding their extended chugging jams through a thick fog of fuzz." - The Wire Mirror Eye, the second full-length album from Psychic Ills, is an altogether heady affair and as its title suggests, a perspective reflection. Through the course of eight tracks, Elizabeth Hart, Jimy SeiTang, Brian Tamborello and Tres Warren journey through a unique amalgamation of electronic explorations, improvised jamming and various sonic experiments that yield a record at once familiar and otherworldly - and unlike anything happening right now. Sprawling opener "Mantis" sets the record's tone with modulating synths and hand drums that give way to a loose groove, terrestrial guitar patterns and shamanic vocals. If you are still around when it rolls into its ending nearly 11 minutes later, its safe to say that you're on board. Following that, the open-ended trance rock of the second track, 'Meta' fades up as if the band has already been jamming on it long before the listener has been let in. It departs in a similar fashion, save for a brief reprise of reversed tape and whatever remnants of the chorus' "Meta, Meta, Meta" are hanging around in the listener's head like a contact high. "Sub Synth" is an off-the-cuff synthesizer splice that descends into the improvised space raga of "Eyes Closed." I Take You As My Wife Again" continues deeper into the abstract with metallic synths and improvised electronics transitioning into organic percussion and whistles before ultimately arriving at its minimal techno inspired ending. Fingernail Tea" is the most straight forward song and vaguely harkens back to elements of their previous full-length, Dins. The hallucinatory next track, "The Way Of" is the album's last burst of energy, forming out of spinning synths and clatter, and riding an eastern bass line and watery guitar riff before unravelling under percussion and goat scream mania. final track "Go to the radio" is a come down of sorts combining two main processed loops, an electronic tambura with a circular dubbed-out field recording of a man's voice repeating the song's name and message, and perhaps the album's for that matter. Mirror Eye is the imaginative culmination of a period of exploration for Psychic Ills. A transcendent combination of musics that symbolizes how far the band has and continues to evolve beyond genre - and a fun listen too. This release will be followed by a mini-lp in the winter of other unheard material from this period.

Like all of them, Pug is a populist at heart, a singer who can't help but talk about all of us when he sings about himself and can't help but sing about himself when he's talking about all of us."

Randle, Doug
Songs For The New Industrial State
PS, US A stunning collection of new songs for and about the time we live in,' billed the text on the backside of composer Doug Randle's 1971 release, Songs For The New Industrial State. In 2009, the same holds true. Doug was, and still is, a writer, arranger, musician, and conductor with roots deep in the Canadian jazz scene of the 1950s. After a lengthy spell working in England during the first half of the 1960s, he returned to Toronto and took up an in-house position at the government-sanctioned Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), where in 1970 he recorded his very own 'What's Going On.' Commercially released by the short-lived Kanata Records label, Songs was an introspective look at ever-dominant corporations, the cutthroat advertising world, our consumer society, decaying environment, and his own personal condition. The results crossed the epic studio creations of David Axelrod's Capitol output (or Spanish folk-rock fuelled Pride LP) with Free Design vocal harmonies from notable vocalists Tommy Ambrose and Laurie Bower (Billy Van Singers, Mutual Understanding, Laurie Bower Singers). Randle himself describes his long-forgotten efforts as, 'my bitter and twisted Simon & Garfunkel songs,' and though the lyrical content is indeed weighty, Songs' backing tracks successfully merge swinging sunshine pop and atmospheric orchestrations with a groovy backbeat performed by the cream of Toronto's heralded studio scene (Moe Koffman, Peter Appleyard, Rob McConnell, and Guido Basso, to name a few). It's an album like you've never heard, and one under the radar of even the most dedicated crate-diggers. Songs For The New Industrial State's much-needed re-release was spearheaded by Canadian music historian and Jamaica-Toronto series producer Kevin Howes (aka Sipreano) and comes replete with OG liner notes from legendary jazz scribe, one-time Downbeat editor, singer, and songwriter Gene Lees, archival images courtesy of Randle, audio taken from the original CBC master tapes, complete lyrics, and stellar art direction courtesy of Vincent Cook (2Step Tokyo, Jamaica-Toronto) that remains faithful to the period issue. In spite of the reductive pop sensibilities and fashion-conscious trends that dominate our modern marketplace, we are ecstatic to reintroduce Songs' insubordinate cry to a global audience. Let's all ensure Randle's lost letter gets read nice and loud on this go-'round.

Revolutionary Ensemble
Beyond The Boundary Of Time
PS, US Leroy Jenkins (violin), Sirone (bass) and Jerome Cooper (drums, balaphone, chiramia, Yamaha PSR 1500). "Beyond The Boundary Of Time documents the last live performance of the legendary Revolutionary Ensemble before Leroy Jenkins' death in 2007. This recording was made of a performance on May 25, 2005 in Warsaw, Poland. In the 1970s, the Revolutionary Ensemble introduced New York to decided musical advances, many pioneered by Chicago's A.A.C.M. musicians. Ex-Chicagoan Leroy Jenkins, who played violin, of all unheard-of modern jazz instruments, had formed his concept from classical, swing, blues, and modern elements and had been one of the radicals who discovered new concepts of sound, space, and musical relationships in the late 1960s. Jerome Cooper had been a somewhat later Chicago explorer, while Sirone's freedom of motion had grown out of work with the most visionary New Yorkers. Extensive rehearsal led this cooperative trio to a shared, free sense of dynamics, momentum, and form, and a wholly unique sound: their instrumental recombinations yielded a surprising variety of textures and colors. Most of all, these highly sophisticated personalities played together to create an ensemble music even larger than the sum of its parts. After the long overdue reissue in 2004 of their 1975 recording The Psyche on Mutable Music, the Revolutionary Ensemble -- Leroy Jenkins (violin), Sirone (bass), and Jerome Cooper (drums, keyboards) -- reunited for both recording and performances. On this live set, each musician is represented by one of their own compositions - 'Configuration' by Sirone, 'Usami' by Leroy Jenkins, and 'Le-Si-Jer' by Jerome Cooper, as well as two group improvisations. All three of these great musicians are at the top of their form here, and one envies the Warsaw audience that attended what turns out to have been their final performance together. Their remarkable realization of the ensemble ideal was still revelatory and still revolutionary."

Ribbons
Royals
PS, US Multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer JHEREK BISCHOFF has had one of the more quietly prolific careers in the last decade of independent music. He's served as both full-time member and guest musician/arranger for experimental pop crews The Dead Science, Xiu Xiu and Parenthetical Girls, composed music for dance and orchestral performances, and elegantly produced records for many of his talented friends. His multi-syllabic musical capabilities and voracious attention to detail have lent all of these projects layers of intricate loveliness and classical drama, qualities that find full flight on Royals, the debut release from Bischoff's solo project RIBBONS. For an artist whose interests and abilities are as varied as Bischoff's, sometimes the greatest question in making work can be to decide which path to pursue, but on Royals the answer is simply to allow the path to unfold.

Ryan, Collie
Hour Is Now
PS, US COLLIE RYAN privately pressed three albums in the early '70s-Taking Your Turn Round The Corner of Day, Indian Harvest, and The Giving Tree. The records were funded in part by Collie's friends at the New Age Farms carrot and fresh juice company in Lompoc, California and her mesmerizing music remained largely a secret until "Cricket," one of the tracks from Indian Harvest surfaced on the Numero Group's stellar compilation Ladies From the Canyon in 2006. Collie's music is almost solely based around her cosmic and birdlike voice and nylon guitar picking, and her lyrics reflect her lifelong study of theosophy and naturalist living. The Hour Is Now collects tracks from her first three LPs and is packaged with Collie's own artwork. For fans of Buffy Sainte-Marie, Joni Mitchell, Sibelle Baier and Ruthann Friedman.

Shearer, Rachel
Fakerie
PS, US Fakerie is a digital séance of aural and visual sculptures by the New Zealand artist Rachel Shearer, formerly known as Lovely Midget. Filmed in an environment to facilitate focused listening, Fakerie is as much for the ears as the eyes. Glowing white lights ebb and expand from darkness in shifting series - like clustered stars - as penetrating resonances of acoustic and electronic overtones decompose into the tiniest sand-like components. Traces of Mary Lucier's mid-1970s burn films and Francois Bayle's musical investigation into the physical and psychical world is present. The specially programmed Region 0 (free)/NTSC format DVD plays in constant loop. Its 22- minutes can be expanded into hours allowing the user to immerse themselves in the work. This DVD is Shearer's first long-form film release. In the past 20 years, she has released records on some of the global underground's most significant labels - Siltbreeze, Xpressway, Flying Nun, Corpus Hermeticum and Ecstatic Peace - as Lovely Midget and with Queen Meanie Puss and Angelhead. Packaged in a mini-LP-styled gatefold book, this set also contains a 20-page booklet investigating the ghosts, distances and signals of fakerie.

Shepherd
Loco Hills
PS, US A lot of beloved-by-us artists and artisans ice-pick out shapely creations from the marble slab of life on a steady schedule, but even within this rarefied realm, it's a real cause for jubilee when an individual/band fucks precedent and totally redefines themselves through a real masterwork. And, in our book (check it out, it's a good read), Loco Hills is one such touchstone. Distilling down every fried-fuzz groove, tape-loop ghost cloud, and mass-mind motorik psychosis, Shepherds have ever let loose into four perfectly-sculpted jam-journeys, the language of Loco is a rolling, roiling ride through twisted, wordless tongues and hieroglyphic electricity, at once more focused and far-out than anything else in their canon. Mentioning that members moonlight in projects like Meneguar, Non-Horse, and Vanishing Voice is meaningless, this is the Rear House posse's shining achievement to date and it stands alone. Black vinyl LPs in matte jackets with the same 'gnashing viper' artwork of the Release The Bats CD edition. Edition of 500.

Siouxsie & The Banshees
Spellbound
PS, US Pushing on with their continuing series of high-quality classic reissues, Slow to Speak presents their latest 12" featuring the exceptional post-punk of one Siouxsie & The Banshees. Clear contemporaries of fellow reissued monoliths of British rock, The Police & The Cure, Siouxsie & the Banshees, though having formed in 1975 by core members Siouxsie Sioux and Steven Severin, the group didn't really come into their own until the late-1970s crisis of rock music, when punk's initial fury began to dissipate under the cooling gaze of mainstream fixation, arguably neutralizing such counter-cultural monoliths as Iggy Pop & David Bowie. Sioux & Severin, excessively grand in their aspirations & determined not to succumb to the same fate, found themselves drawn to the emerging post-punk philosophies of anti-pop image formulation and projection, combining an essentially anti-celebrity presentation with starkly realist social commentaries intertwined confidently into their peculiarly unique and sinisterly haunting dark-rock aesthetic, one of the major contributors along with The Cure in the creation of the still-debatable goth-rock genre. Irrelevant of their cultural allegiances, Siouxsie and the Banshees were able to accomplish complete artistic autonomy while retaining their patently anti-authoritarian stance through the medium of their aural poetics, taking up verbal arms against legacies of British imperialism, medicine & power, post-industrial technological melancholia & religious-politico-psychosis of rabid Zionism; all this was performed under the advantageously offsetting facade of self-imposed outcasting, presenting themselves in dooming attire & make-up, exactly as they saw their world: a desolate land drifting towards an existential void of endless consequence, inhabited increasingly by a zombie-like rabble -- uncertain of what they live for, and more importantly, what is worth living for.

Spencer, Angelo
Music Is My Sweat b/w Great Salt Lake
PS, US 2 songs: My Music Is My Sweat b/w Great Salt Lake "My Music is My Sweat" began with a conversation between Karl Blau and Angelo Spencer about how music is similar to body odor and, like everyone's stench, one's music is also unique and identifiable. Angelo's music is as raw as sweat. Recorded in one day, on one take by Blau, this 7" is a puddle of twitchy urgency. Generally a one-man band, this recording is fleshed out with frantic drum fills and fidgety keys by L'Orchidee d'Hawaii soon after they finished a tour with Spencer. "My Music is My Sweat" is the sprint and "The Great Salt Lake" is the cool-down, exasperated pause needed to sprint and sweat again; embellished with distant whistling - like the playful intermission of a spaghetti western - and Spencer is the wandering hero. "Music should always be like that." featuring L'Orchidee d'Hawaii

Stars Of The Lid
Music for Nitrous Oxide
PS, US Repress/reissue. DEBUT OF THE CLASSIC FROM THE POST-ROCK DRONE MASTERS. NEW VERSION RE-MASTERED WITH NEW COVER ART. This was sedimental's first cd release back in 1994. Robert Ovetz (Ultrasound) mentioned this guy Adam who was doing amazing 4-track stuff at home. I think the name of the tape he gave me was called "Ombudsman". The success of this release was a nice surprise and certainly having Joel at Cargo champion it, who was just getting Kranky going as well, certainly put us both out there. Ultimately, SOTL ended up at Kranky and are still making amazing recordings for them. Many say this is still their favorite Lid release, although I am partial to the "Ballested Orchestra" too. It certainly remains a powerful touchstone for and precursor to, the post-whatever independent music scene and still sounds incredibly solid and undated today. Though Stars founder Adam Wiltzie has admittedly distanced himself from the release in terms of artistic terms he felt it was time to re-visit and re-fresh the work with a new mastering job, as well as having new artwork designed by longtime visual collaborator Craig McCaffrey. Sedimental has always kept the document in print in its original form with a remarkably steady stream of sales, but we welcomed the opportunity to update the release and make it more widely available to a new generation, so to speak. Below are excerpts from the original press release which still seem quite relevant and accurate: Sedimental announces the first CD from Austin drone stars Stars of the Lid, an amazing 4-track recording that is created in the spirit of Eno, Main, and Spacemen 3. Produced without keyboards, this lo-fi ambient journey employs predominately guitar, avoiding typical rock elements while still possessing the "home" recorded feel of so much independent music. Being based in Austin, a town loaded with so many heavy guitar bands, one wonders how they came to make such hypnotic and engaging sounds. Especially when Stars mastermind Adam Wiltzie is involved with so many "rock" bands himself, having recorded Ed Hall's Motherscratcher and its forthcoming release, the Flaming Lips Peel Sessions, as well as running sound for Bad Livers, and Doo Rag tours. Citing Cage, Spacemen 3, Robert from Main and Loop, nitrous oxide, and Bedhead as artistic inspirations, he also comments the group is a reaction against the "muscle" rock and C&W that dominates the Austin music scene and a way to withdraw from it. Despite their current unknown status, we at Sedimental were so impressed by the music of Stars of the Lid , we felt it worthy of our first CD release. After giving this a few listens (especially the brilliant trio of tracks 7,8, and 9), we are sure you will think they belong on the same plateau as EAR, Labradford, Main, and Organum.

Strawbs
S/T [expanded, remastered re-issue]
PS, Germany The Strawbs had done an album with Sandy Denny handling many of the vocals, and had also done quite a bit of unreleased recordings (now on the double CD Preserves Uncanned) prior to 1969's Strawbs. This is still their first proper album, but their wealth of prior live and studio experience most likely helped make it sound more confident and fully formed than many a debut effort. The group distinguished itself among the burgeoning school of British folk-rockers by delivering bittersweet folk-rock with a storytelling flavor. Dave Cousins' songwriting was on the sober and occasionally over-earnest side, but nonetheless the record was strong and alluring enough to immediately establish the Strawbs as one of the better first-generation U.K. folk-rock outfits. Some of these songs had been around for a while, as the presence of some of them on Preserves Uncanned and Sandy Denny & the Strawbs attests. However, the group took big strides from bare-bones folk-rock in the studio by dressing these in arrangements -- sometimes with light recorder, choral backup vocals, and orchestration -- that gave the Elizabethan melodies a pastoral, quasi-classical feel at times, without losing sight of an acoustic base. "The Man Who Called Himself Jesus" and "Where Is This Dream of Your Youth" are among their best and most ambitious songs, and even if the compositions can sometimes take themselves too seriously, the music's never less than respectable. Strawbs
Dragonfly [expanded, remastered re-issue]
PS, Germany Dragonfly was the second album to be released by the Strawbs, though much other material unissued in the late '60s that preceded it has since been made available. (In fact, earlier versions of two of the songs, "I Turned My Face Into the Wind," and "Josephine, for Better or for Worse," appear on the archival releases Strawberry Music Sampler, No. 1 and Preserves Uncanned, respectively.) Dragonfly was also the only LP the band recorded with cellist Claire Deniz in the lineup. Though an attractive and competent record, it's not as impressive as their debut. The songs aren't as striking, and the arrangements -- even with the addition of a fourth full-time member in Deniz -- aren't as effective as the mating of folk-rock, medieval, and classical music that characterized the best songs on the first album. It's a more subdued effort, and not as grave in its mood, Deniz's cello doing much to mellow the sound. Dave Cousins retained his appetite for epics, though, in the ten-minute "The Vision of the Lady of the Lake," which had piano by soon to be Strawb Rick Wakeman. When the fuzz guitar unexpectedly piles into the mix a few minutes into the track, joined by strange hissing background noises, it reaches a tense height that the rest of the record doesn't match, though it's accomplished and pleasingly introspective dawn of the '70s British folk-rock. Surf City
Surf City EP
PS, GERMANY This is the debut release by New Zealand's Surf City. An anachronism right at the beginning, Surf City was founded in a video library, in this dying-out relic of an analogue age. When Davin Stoddard and Josh Kennedy ran into each other one evening in their small town, Josh had just bought a sound card and Davin a four-track. This debut EP is storming and strolling, light-footed, laconic and pop -- produced in an excessively lo-fi a manner as possible. Surf City is about the simplicity of sound, perfectly encapsulating pop music's essence, that bands like Pavement, The Zombies or The Jesus and Mary Chain share as a smallest common denominator. Everyone who has ever heard the breakers against New Zealand's coast suspects that Brian Wilson has a beach house in Surf City as well. However, New Zealand's legendary era of rock music resides in the Flying Nun label and with bands like The Clean or Tall Dwarfs. Nevertheless, the rumbling atmosphere of "Headin' Inside" could have been released by Flying Nun Records as well -- not as a nostalgic revival of good old times -- but rather as a self-confident continuation of a legendary sound. With Morr Music, Surf City has found a congenial home.

Szajner, Bernard
Superficial Music
PS, UK LTM presents the first in a series of expanded CD reissues by visionary French electronic composer Bernard Szajner. Originally released in late 1981, Superficial Music incorporates elements of his previous album Visions of Dune played backwards at half speed and treated digitally, as well as the three-part suite Oswiecim, an imagining of the Holocaust informed by the experience of his own family. Sometimes harmonious, sometimes unsettling, Szajner's music is never less than extraordinary. Reviews rated the album highly: 'Superficial? No, superlative music! If you care at all for soundscapes that eschew cheap escapes, this album will do far more than tickle the surface of you mind' (NME); 'A significant success - a wholly involving and frequently disturbing blanket of continually contorting synthetic sound' (Melody Maker). The expanded 65-minute CD features three previously unreleased bonus tracks, recorded in 1982. Bernard Szajner biography: Born in Grenoble in 1944, Szajner first made his name as a lighting designer for Magma, Gong and the Who. Having invented new instruments such as the laser harp used by Jean-Michel Jarre, Szajner began to record experimental, conceptual albums of his own, including Visions of Dune (1979), Some Deaths Take Forever (1980), Superficial Music (1981) and Brute Reason (1983). He has also recorded as Zed, and was one half of The (Hypothetical) Prophets. Since the mid 80s, polymath Szajner has worked as a painter, filmmaker and theatre director.

Some Deaths Take Forever
PS, UK LTM presents the second in a series of expanded CD reissues by visionary French electronic composer Bernard Szajner. Originally released in late 1980, Some Deaths Take Forever is a deeply emotional, sometimes disturbing musical account of the feelings of a prisoner on death row, conceived as the soundtrack to a short film by Amnesty International. The album mixes dark, angular and unnerving electronic textures with dynamic rock arrangements, guest musicians including Bernard Paganotti of Magma. Reviews rated the album highly: 'A modern electronic masterwork - one of the most exciting and innovative piece of electronic music to be released this year' (Melody Maker); 'Frantic, outraged music shames the bulk of oscillator nuts peddling their dodgy little repetitions around' (Sounds); 'Unquestionably one of the decade's most accomplished fusions of sophisticated electronics and driving rock' (NME). The expanded 60 minute CD features three previously unreleased bonus tracks, recorded in 1982.

PS, SWEDEN DELAYED... Incredible new album, Pitchfork approved. If you thought the EP was great, just wait until this arrives. Folk album of the year? Price to be confirmed, it might be better, it won't be worse. PITCHFORK: "While it's understandable to be skeptical of another skinny dude with a mustache, a guitar, and a worn-out copy of The Anthology of American Folk Music, the more time you invest in Shallow Graves, the more you'll realize how unusually memorable it is. Ultimately, Shallow Graves transcends comparison-- which is saying an awful lot, given the popularity of its prototype-- and Matsson is a natural-born folksinger, earnest, clever, and comforting."

Tillman (released in limited runs of 150) endeared him to fans of and drew comparisons to the likes of Nick Drake, Will Oldham, and Jason Molina. In 2006, after three months in Europe touring on his third and most accessible album, Minor Works, Tillman recorded his fourth collection of songs at home with his brother and roommate. Cancer and Delirium struck a perfect balance between the intimacy of his earlier releases with the nuanced, melodic sense of Minor Works. Each song imbued with the same strikingly disconsolate singing and devastatingly poignant prose that Tillman is known for and accented with some of his most gorgeous, spare arrangements. Vacilando Territory Blues, Tillman's fifth and first with Western Vinyl, came as the result of three different recording attempts in 2008, in which entire sessions were scrapped, and ultimately the majority of the final material would surface and be recorded days before mastering. The push and pull of this record veers sharply from the tone of Tillman's previous releases, which for the most part, adhere to a singular mood and stylistic execution. The tension dynamically between songs like "Firstborn" and "New Imperial Grand Blues" is hard to reconcile, but the way the songs are framed herein belies a cohesion not dissimilar to classic oddball albums such as After The Goldrush. Sacrifcing a stylized album, the breadth of Tillman's abilities as a songwriter emerge on VTB, in an array of musical personalities bound by his lyrical existential dread and economical arrangements. In 2008, Tillman joined longtime friends and musical collaborators, Fleet Foxes. Casey Wescott and Christian Wargo both appear on VTB, along with several regular contributors who were willing to adapt to several idiosyncratic recording obstructions. Vacilando Territory Blues is far and away Tillman's most collaborative effort, and the most striking moments here are those seemingly stumbled upon, without resorting to second-takes or microphone re-adjustment. This album casts a strange perspective on what people have come to expect from Tillman's music, but these songs, though oddly untethered, reveal the process of someone coming to terms with the prospect of making music in the void.

Titus Andronicus
The Airing Of Grievances
PS, US Patrick Stickles, lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter, launches his insights across a wall of defiant, triumphant rock anthems, which have earned comparisons to Bruce Springsteen, The Pogues, and The Replacements. "Patrick Stickles howls with anguish way beyond his 22 years, often cramming lyrics into tight spaces just to make sure he gets the last word in. The drama's more Boss than Bright Eyes, fueled by blue collar frustration and, most notably, beer" - Pitchfork.

File Under: Male Vocal The Golden Age of the Beat Balladeer
PS, US After enjoying countless compilation albums of psych, beat, garage, girl groups, instrumentals, soul, exotica etc., the Psychic Circle label now releases a compilation which concentrates on that most popular of '60s phenomena, the British male vocalist. These are great tracks and performances that can't really be considered beat, soul or psych, but at the same time conjure a similar sort of mental image. Solid, classy songs performed by great singers which readily evoke the sense of excitement and freshness prevalent in that decade. As legendary psych musician and Psychic Circle label-head, Nick Saloman (The Bevis Frond) expounds, "What I was trying to assemble for this album was a selection of quality male vocal, with a kind of pop/beat feel. The kind of thing you might have heard in any London discotheque alongside the beat groups, the Stateside soul-sounds, the groovy girls and burgeoning psych riffs. Nothing too MOR or fey, just cool guys doing what they did best. I reckon it's a long overdue examination of a hitherto overlooked genre. It doesn't really need a label, but if you want to give it one, just file under - male vocal." Artists include: Mickey Clarke, Jason Cord, Gerry Deville, Dominic Grant, Nicholas Hammond, Christian Ward, Graham Bell, Jerry Page, Dane Hunter, Brian Keith, Keith Powell, Don Adams, Neil Landon, Greg Hunter, Dave Walton, Danny Street, Dorian Gray, Rudi Bennett, Ronnie Jones, and James Royal.

"Music for the Mind and Body... while music industry continuously looks for 'new' concepts, trends and music styles to serve the mainstream, Trip in Time ventures a look to the past. We present the artistic, emotional and intensive side of music, the concept of progressive psychedelic rock. It appeared in the public consciousness for the first time in 1966, created by the 13th Floor Elevators. By 1956, the English psychiatrist Humphrey Osmond had already formulated: 'To fathom hell or soar angelic, just take a pinch of psychedelic.' Fifty years later, we invite you to join the bride uncensored spektrum of music with a fine feel for intensity and a variety of interesting influences.

Weird Weeds
Hold Me
PS, US For the past five years THE WEIRD WEEDS have been creating innovative and unclassifiable rock and folk songs that effortlessly straddle the line between rock 'n' roll and experimentalism. In that time the Austin, TX band has toured extensively and released three albums, the first of which-2004's Hold Me-was only released as a limited and now unavailable CDR. Lovingly reissued by Zum, Hold Me is now available in an pressing of 300 on black vinyl, packaged in a screened chipboard cover with all new artwork by LAUREN PAKRADOONI. Hold Me is also unique in that it's the only recorded document of The Weird Weeds' original 4-piece lineup that included KURT NEWMAN on lead guitar. The album is evidence that very early in their existence The Weird Weeds had developed a unique approach to songwriting that they've been honing and refining ever since. The core trio is AARON RUSSELL (NITRE PIT), SANDY EWEN (collaborator with TOM CARTER in SPIDERWEBS), and NICK HENNIES (percussionist who has performed with JANDEK and ARNOLD DREYBLATT).

Welcome Wagon, The
Welcome to the Welcome Wagon
PS, US This debut album by The Welcome Wagon unveils a ramshackle sing-a-long enterprise of a Presbyterian pastor (the Rev. Vito Aiuto) and his wife (Monique) wrestling out the influences of folk music, religion, popular culture, and church tradition in a collection of songs that is as soulful as it is good-humored. This gorgeous brew is reflected in the group's repertoire, which unflinchingly consolidates a vast history of "sacred" song traditions: from old Testament psalms, to Presbyterian Psalters of the 17th century, to iconoclastic pop innovators of the 1960s (The Velvet Underground), to charismatic catholics of the 1970s (Lenny Smith), and even into the melancholy lovelorn pop of the 1980s (The Smiths). Yellow Moon Band, The
Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World
PS, UK The Brother's dropped some mushroom's one afternoon after decided to experience the love behind the record of the year. Yes they would plot a histogram using Jaffa-cakes and pink wafers. During a distracted moment they pondered over the other important events in music. The Weeley festival 1971 (Juicy Lucy, demon fuzz and Hackensack and all for just £1-50); dancing in the mud in your underpants at Bickershaw to the Greatfull Dead; Cheech and Chong and Haydock Brass Band. Or what about climbing on army tanks to catch Roy Harper at the St. Helens Show. Great days with the endorphin rush of pure music jammed out by buzzing musicians. So here we have the debut album by The Yellow Moon Band. It follows two sold out sevens and some crazy shows at the Green Man Festival. Eight tracks of Instrumental wonk that's as darn exciting as discovering that rare side of wax that's sorta' Anatolian led rare groove in a bare chested wrestle with Be Bop Deluxe's 'Sunburst Finish' and pressed up on Vertigo. Well it might exist in the car boot of your dreams. More Hillage than Gong, more Hacket than Genesis, more Thompson than Fairport and certainly more Velvet Jacket than Leather jacket. Young, Neil
Southern Man
PS, US The Feed.back series has never been focused on making the rare and obscure once again commercially available for record collectors and DJs to own. As demonstrated by the previous two selections, U2's Sunday Bloody Sunday and Loggins & Messina's Pathway To Glory, the Feed.back series is intended to really showcase some of the dopest as well as most urgently relevant classics of our recent times. More than just a music showcase, Feed.back highlights records that actually concern serious conditions of the modern era up to this day, both spiritual and political/material, records that speak to the everyday conditions that we live through in our day-to-day existence on this earth. Music has the potential to become something beyond personal healer, a social tool both for political organization and propaganda, but also for the necessary expression of mass frustration and collective purpose. Feed.back strives for the rejuvenation of this intent in the creation and playing of music. The 3rd edition of this series, Neil Young's Southern Man, articulates a marked disgust with the reactionary and inherently racist tendency of regional nationalism. Everyone is familiar with the alleged animosity between Young and Alabama's Lynyrd Skynyrd over the blatantly condemnatory articulation of the South's almost fascistic obsession with local heritage -- sic. blood & soil, the completely fallacious belief in a national story, a legacy of firm local traditionalism that fuels so much of the racism in the south. Past, present, and future is accounted for, and the legacy of slavery is carried on through demented 'local pride' that goes largely unquestioned, disguised as it is. Young put out a song that sought to openly and aggressively single out the violent legacy of Southern racism and its influence still operating strong within Southern social thought, refusing to let it fade away from the popular memory, just as the most influential and high-ranking of apologists were beginning to formulate and put into action the notion of equality finally achieved in the 'new America.

Baja
Aether Obelisk (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MARCH 17TH)
PS, US The Aether Obelisk is the fourth release in the Baja saga by composer Daniel Vujanic. It arrives at a broad musical horizon, touching the borderlines of forms ranging from chamber music and psychedelia, to pop/jazz-infected electronic music. The Aether Obelisk is unpredictable as ever, but definitely exploiting more vocal and repetitive elements than its predecessors. The overall mood is also less melancholic and nocturnal than previous Baja offerings. Some almost-tender sequences add more harmonic depth to the fractured signature sound of Vujanic´s suite-like compositions. It's loaded with acoustic and electric guitar textures ranging from folk to improv, synths, panoramic electronics, reverberating piano bits, horn sections, vibes, glockenspiel and multi-layered percussion - both live and programmed. "If the indie rock just isn't getting it done for you anymore, Baja's enveloping, intangible compositions may be just the guide you need to more engaging musical territory." - Tiny Mix Tapes "Vujanic is making music for the Shuffle generation, positing endless subdivisions that thus, beautifully, enable the listener to consider the music in almost anything." -Cokemachine Glow "Incredible, genre-melting... deconstructs rock norms." -The Tripwire

Bibio
Vignetting The Compost (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 3RD)
PS, US Seamlessly amalgamating nature and electronics, Vignetting The Compost, the third full-length release from Bibio, channels instruments and vocals from a bygone era through a futuristic digital portal. History may credit Edison with the phonograph but, in truth, the first such device mysteriously washed up on the shores of England in 1876... playing Bibio. Vignetting The Compost is at once timeless and innovative; 60s-esque folk guitar and mechanic manipulations of sounds whose instruments of origin are less important than the feelings they evoke, layer upon each other with ease and intricacy. Just when you expect to hear Nico's moan escaping your stereo, Bibio himself comes through with a voice that could have sung next to her on "These Days." Truly, this is an album for the ages. Producer Stephen Wilkinson is a self-taught musician from an area in central England often referred to as the Black Country. His love for sound and noise led him to the University of London and the study of Sonic Arts where he discovered experimental electronic acts such as Aphex Twin, Autechre, and most importantly Boards Of Canada. His own musical identity was christened Bibio, in honor of a fly his father had insisted on using during the fishing trips to Wales that were so influential in establishing his love of the sounds of nature. Focusing on location recording using cassettes, a half-broken sampler, Dictaphones, and experimental ways of affecting sounds, Bibio has crafted a unequalled style that is as subtle as it is powerful.

Stewart put together a handful of unreleased songs in this item that marks the sepia tinted memory of the most elegantly poppy seventies, led by the piano, evoking the halo of composers like Burt Bacharach or Henry Mancini and artists like Dusty Springfield or Françoise Hardy. From the new version of "Our Secret Life" in French, rebaptized here as "Quand il n'y a plus d'amour" (with the French adaptation by Nick Garrie) to the closing gem of the EP, a version of "Hopelessly Devoted to You" that Olivia Newton-John sang in "Grease", on of our favorite films, which Duglas deliciously recreates with the collaboration of the Scottish band THE ATTIC LIGHTS. The single is completed with two very recent recordings, the unreleased "I Can Wait Forever", intimate folk pop marked with elegant melodies and vocals, and a version of "You Don't Want to Be My Girlfriend, Phoebe" by MY LITTLE AIRPORT. When Duglas received MY LITTLE AIRPORT's album, published by Elefant, he fell instantly in love with the song. He played it live a few days later and soon after decided to record it in the studio, the magnificent result of which is here. A precious collection of songs with the indelible stamp of one of the most gifted minds in pop of the last 25 years at the controls. As always, Duglas, it's a pleasure.

Bodies Obtained, The
From the Top of My Tree (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 2009)
PS, US The path that leads to The Bodies Obtained is a long one. Conceived in Detroit, MI, not much is known of the extremely elusive duo (there isn't even an existing photograph of the artists) other than the fact that they took their name from the Joy Division song "Day of the Lords", and whatever other little bits of information they make available to the public via cryptic press releases sent to the media from within the band's camp. The Bodies Obtained are of indiscriminate age, and only now fielding their first album, From The Top Of My Tree to the greater public. A timeless piece of music, ...My Tree could have been conceived in 1978, 1988, 1998 or 2008: it's the sonic documentation of an ongoing project that spans electronica, experimental rock and synth-pop from a group who have experienced it all. With songs akin to those of Brian Eno, the Residents and Fad Gadget, TBO use their anonymity to lead the listener to explore a realm that could be associated with those bands: an obscure place where nothing is quite what to expect around the next bend. Discord and discomfort are as important as reward and satisfaction, and the album is a living, breathing testament to that rhetoric. The music itself is heavier than most electronic bands out there, more synths, more echo, more ether, more meaning. One member of TBO attests: "For us the band's name also ties into our reason for making music. Due in part, to that perfect act of nature that put us here, in this body, at this time and place. Finding music attractive, it has forced us to express our 'art damaged' selves through it". Song titles like "Let the Worm Seize the Day" and "The Pig that I Am"; channeling even more '80s electro gloom, validate the band's statements off the bat.

Bones, Mike
Fool For Everyone (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 3RD)
PS, US "A Fool For Everyone was made in April 2008 at a place called The Seaside Lounge. A few musicians joined me, old and new friends. Recording took four days. I don't particularly enjoy being in studios, but this time was easy. Decisions presented themselves naturally and we got good takes. Everyone was on top of his or her game. All these songs were written after June 2007, except "Everybody's Always Coming Down On Me" which is quite an old song. I wrote one on the beach in Spain, the rest at my desk in New York City. Other songs were written in that time and in those places. Those aren't on A Fool For Everyone. Most songs exist because of beautiful women and existential despair, but that's no surprise. There are a lot of guitars on A Fool for Everyone, not just mine, but Matt Sweeney's too. Our moves go well together. My last record purposefully had no guitar solos, this one purposefully does. Intention is important when making things, having complete understanding of one's intentions less so. I heard my father doesn't like the cover of this record because it's a naked picture of me. It's OK, I sort of knew he wouldn't. I like the picture and I like the girl who took it. I have my reasons. All of the above is factual as far as I can tell. Memory is a tricky thing, but you know that. We've probably read the same books. Good night." - Mike Bones "Anthemic doesn't have to mean overblown you know. Mr. Bones can do it with swooning casualness, sieving the twee from Sufjan Stevens and Belle & Sebastian, leaving only heart and soul." - NME
"Mike Bones is the favorite guitarist of every musician you like in New York. He's the New York music-geek world's secret weapon." - Vice Magazine "Bones is a guitar hero inside and out, master apprentice of a steel-eyed, determined blues first informed by punk, not the sallow, honeyed agony seeping out of our most emotionally isolated singer-songwriters." - Dusted
