Worried Well
PS, US Further explorations of "post-apocalyptic Vaudevillian
punk" and demented pop, but with a twist. Plainly stated, 31Knots
hasn't moved in a new direction so much as they've ripened to full
maturity, evolved into the creature they're meant to be. Previous
efforts are just as tightly wrapped, just as fierce and incendiary.
But something is different. Something here is new. It deserves to
be called out as thought provoking and well written music in a time
when substance is quickly giving way to music of commerce and palatability.
There is no band like 31Knots and Worried Well finds them at the full
height of their powers.

Action Biker
Hesperian Puisto
PS, SWEDEN It really is time for Action Biker's first solo album!
It has now been six years since she emerged as an artist doing fun
and popular live shows and releasing CD-R's in the indie pop scene
of Gothenburg, Sweden, which included people like Jens Lekman and
The Honeydrips. Since then, Sarah Nyberg Pergament has been involved
in other projects, such as Flow Flux Clan, Kissing Mirrors and The
Dreamers, whose record "Day For Night" has received great
acclaim from different places around the world. Over the years, Sarah
has also performed lots of Action Biker shows (some, as an opening
act for Le Tigre and The Embassy), contributed to recordings with
Lars Blek (The Field), Differnet and The Honeydrips, and all this
time, new recordings with Action Biker have popped up on compilations
and singles. In brief, when "Hesperian Puisto" finally is
released, it means the début of someone with a lot of experienceŠ
The record is named after the Hesperian park in Helsinki, Finland,
where Sarah lived for a while. She describes her music as baroque
on synthesizers. It is pop music built on complex naivety - altogether
very accessible music with distinct vocals and a crispy, sweet, analogue
sound. Two great-looking videos are also included on the CD. References
and Influences: Young Marble Giants, Broadcast, Dislocation Dance,

PS, US Pronounced ay-ya, this Chicago-based Mexican-American three-piece
are laying the blueprint for a new brand of Latin psychedelic pop.
As vocal melodies chime, discreet electronic effects swirl around
the mix & strings arc across the skyline at the subtlest of angles.
The group has forged a distinctive sound encompassing some of their
favorite styles from the last four decades: German Krautrock experiments,
Motown flourishes, Brazilian Tropicalia, cosmic jazz & symphonic
60's pop of Brian Wilson & Phil Spector- all while paying homage
to their Mexican musical heritage.

Athletic Automaton/Made In Mexico

PS, US This split is the audio debut of ATHLETIC AUTOMATON and MADE
IN MEXICO. This pressing sports a fashionable cover designed by none
other than MATT BRINKAMAN. The songs? ATHLETIC AUTOMATON delivers
"Death On An Escalator" (with guest vocals by J RYAN of
SIX FINGER SATELLITE) and "Sweatpants No Underwear," while
MADE IN MEXICO contribute the debut recordings of "Infrared Eye,"
"Wounded Knees" & "International Zombie."
Athletic Automaton features STEPHEN MATTOS (ex-ARAB ON RADAR) and
provide two tracks of droning, distortion-sopped lapsteel guitar set
to a repetitive battery of seasick lurching rhythms. Made in Mexico
features JEFF SCHNEIDER (ex-Arab On Radar). Made in Mexico provides
the listener with scratchy riffs accompanied by REBECCA MITCHELL's
dispatch-from-the-edge shrieks. Meanwhile the percussion and bass
remain loose and limber enough to tackle the arrangements dynamics
with no wave jazz-like focus.

Baker, Aidan
Green & Cold
PS, US Green & Cold is the strength of strings proved by AIDAN
BAKER (NADJA). Yes, when gazed upon, these patent leather shoes really
do reflect up. However, G&C accomplishes much more than throwing
loveless lights back up to heaven. Baker's six strings ring out like
Echoes in a Shallow Bay in the year 4 A.D., but vox and drone are
couched in subtly weird production. Baker's voice is calmly pleasing,
and like Vini Reilly or Henry Frayne (Lanterna), his vocals often
seem more like another frequency/rhythm than specific words. Edition

Bellafea
Cavalcade
PS, US BELLAFEA call Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The rich, independent
music history and their subsequent Southern upbringing play obvious
roles in structuring their individuality. Bellafea teems with the
punk spirit of local townies Superchunk, while the trialing dissonance
of Polvo shine through in their string parts. There is an earnest
aggression in their music, perhaps channeled from their struggles
with the vastly conservative Southeastern United States-the patriarchal,
Bible-belt countryside where they grew up. There is resistance, and
there is also a secular nod to their heritage and its inevitable and
inspiring impact on their songwriting.

Bipolaroid
'E(i)ther Or'
PS, US Amid the local masses of hornblowers, washboard scratchers
and swamp-pop stars, Ben Glover stands out like, well, the one guy
making pastoral, British Invasion psych/rock in a southern jazz-and-zydeco
province. His band Bipolaroid made a grand entrance with 2003's Transparent
Make-believe, likely the most authentic Syd Barrett shrine ever to
emerge from the muddy banks of the Mississippi. Reborn as a five-piece
band, the group finally follows up its singular gem with an album
whose mark remains the same but whose aim has shifted slightly. E(i)ther
Or is an altogether messier, more chaotic affair " intentionally
so, Glover might add. The songwriter sings in a blurry slur, with
a sleepy, faux-English accent that frames vintage-sounding instruments
and paisley melodies in a perfectly hazy Pink Floyd daydream.

Byrds
Columbia Singles '65-'67
PS, US When "Mr. Tambourine Man" first rumbled out of car
radio speakers in 1965, it was a pivotal moment in pop history. With
its jangling 12-string and epic sweep, it was the dawn of a new day:
the birth of folk-rock. And the Byrds were just getting started. The
next two years saw one hit after another, from the Biblical prophesies
of "Turn, Turn, Turn" to the raga-rock of "Eight Miles
High," from the exotic orchestration of "So You Want To
Be A Rock 'N' Roll Star" to the Byrds bringing it all back home
with "My Back Pages." Here they are again, 30 landmark recordings
in their perfectly constructed, radio-friendly mono mixes: the forgotten
rarities, withdrawn singles and, of course, all the original A and
B-sides. No one has ever had a stronger run of singles than did the
Byrds in their prime. No one.

Byrds
The Notorious Byrd Brothers
PS, US Re-issue with 6 bonus tracks. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "The recording
sessions for the Byrds' fifth album, The Notorious Byrd Brothers,
were conducted in the midst of internal turmoil that found them reduced
to a duo by the time the record was completed. That wasn't evident
from listening to the results, which showed the group continuing to
expand the parameters of their eclecticism while retaining their hallmark
guitar jangle and harmonies. With assistance from producer Gary Usher,
they took more chances in the studio, enhancing the spacy quality
of tracks like "Natural Harmony" and Goffin & King's
"Wasn't Born to Follow" with electronic phasing. Washes
of Moog synthesizer formed the eerie backdrop for "Space Odyssey,"
and the songs were craftily and unobtrusively linked with segues and
fades. But the Byrds did not bury the essential strengths of their
tunes in effects: "Goin' Back" (also written by Goffin &
King) was a magnificent and melodic cover with the expected tasteful
12-string guitar runs that should have been a big hit. "Tribal
Gathering" has some of the band's most effervescent harmonies;
"Draft Morning" is a subtle and effective reflection of
the horrors of the Vietnam War; and "Old John Robertson"
looks forward to the country-rock that would soon dominate their repertoire.
[The CD reissue adds six bonus tracks, including different versions
of "Goin' Back" and "Draft Morning," a few instrumentals,
and David Crosby's controversial "Triad"; unlisted on the
sleeve is a rehearsal outtake which captures comically vitriolic arguments
among the band.]" (Richie Unterberger)

Carter, Susan
Wonderful Dreams And Adventures
PS, UK Along with the likes of Jackie DeShannon, Cass Elliot and Joni
Mitchell, Susan Carter was an integral part of the late 1960s Laurel
Canyon scene, a veritable "Lady Of The Canyon". Carter captured
the attention of Epic Records, who teamed her with producer Les Carter
and arranger Dick Halligan (of Blood, Sweat & Tears fame). Recorded
in New York, her 1970 debut Wonderful Deeds and Adventures - A Collection
of Stirring Scene and Moving Accidents was certainly that and more...
something of an era timepiece. It was also interesting in that, with
backing from Randy Brecker and most of BS&T, material such as
Donovan's 'Young Girl Blues', James Taylor's 'Brighten Your Day with
My Night' and 'Medley for Billie Holiday' found Carter working in
the blues and jazz genres years before Joni Mitchell and other contemporaries
made such a move. Carter certainly had a powerful and versatile voice,
capable of handling a wide variety of genres and her crystalline voice
occasionally recalled Laura Nyro.

Cocteau, Jean & Les Six
Once Upon A Time
PS, UK Paris 1919. Playwright, novelist, poet, surrealist, filmmaker
and self-publicist Jean Cocteau was the literary spokesman for Les
Six. With his endorsement, and the inspiration of Erik Satie and fired
by the principles of Dada and surrealism, the group, comprising Francis
Poulenc, Arthur Honegger, Darius Milhaud, Georges Auric, Germaine
Tailleferre and Louis Durey, expressed their irreverence towards the
twin specters of lifeless tradition and bloodless modernism. They
embraced the previously forbidden worlds of popular song, 'primitive'
music and jazz and in so doing, helped purge the classical music establishment
of its deeply ingrained snobbery and pave the way for generations
of iconoclasts - in classical, jazz and rock music - still to come.
Our edition comprises famous examples of the work of this group of
composers who so scandalized twenties Paris Pacific 231, Les Biches,
Le Boeuf sur le Toit and La Creation du Monde along with themes from
Georges Auric's scores for Cocteau's the very influential surrealistic
film fantasies; Orphée (Orpheus), La belle et la bête
(Beauty and the Beast) and L'aigle à deux têtes (The
Eagle has Two Heads).

Cristal
Re-Ups
PS, US JIMMY, ANTHONY, GREG DARDEN, and BOBBY DONNE (LABRADFORD, AIX
EM KLEMM) play out infrequently , are unprolific in their release
schedule and spend their time refining and recording their abstract
electronic music. Their seclusion and deliberation produce remarkable
results. Re-Ups is their second full length release. CRISTAL use computers
to mutate and stretch sound spectra into long forms balanced against
tenuous, implied melodies. The barely perceptible abuts the overwhelming.
Placid soundfields are lacerated with incisions of digital fragments
and static on the opening track. Sonic reductions boil and release
evaporated melodies on the track "Xicifu," and then are
decimated by the scouring noise of "Left of Swept." All
across Re-Ups, disorienting and comforting elements sit side by side.
When so many noise and experimental artists seem to be hemorrhaging
releases, Cristal's compositional rigor is refreshing. One time pressing
of 500 copies on 180-gram vinyl in gatefold jackets. Comes with digital

PS, US Now acting as masters of their own destiny, The Dandy Warhols
are back and ushering in a rockin return to form with Earth to the
Dandy Warhols, the band s debut on their newly minted label, Beat

allows you to fully enjoy the trip while still keeping you on your

Smoking Kills (ON SALE / DELAYED: SALEABLE AUGUST 26)
PS, NORWAY PRE-ORDER @ $15.00, regular price $17.00. New band featuring
KEN STRINGFELLOW. The Disciplines--a razor sharp, fuel efficient jet
machine blending a full-on, rock blast worthy of AC/DC with anthemic
melodies as sweet and singable as ABBA; a place where indie-level
humility and charm meets a stadium-sized musical reach. Formed by
American indie icon Ken Stringfellow (the Posies, R.E.M., Big Star,
Lagwagon etc.) and the three instrument-wielding members of Norwegian
chart successes Briskeby, the Disciplines have just released their
first album, SMOKiNG KiLLS (Voices Music & Ent., Norway/Denmark).
The album has already drawn rave reviews in the Norwegian national
media; the singles "Best Mistake" and "Oslo" are
bona fide chart hits; the band has been the subject of its own TV
special and is on most of the major festivals in Norway this summer.
The band was asked by Snow Patrol to support their London show last
year; R.E.M. included the track "Yours for the Taking" on
their Q magazine mix CD and has tagged the band to support their Scandinavian
stadium shows in September. Coming up: a feature on Ken in Elle Scandinavia;
festival and club dates in Netherlands, Spain and France; and a partnership
with Chess Mobile that will put the band on screens large and small
this summer (Chess will release a limited edition Disciplines phone

same whether punk had happened or not. And things only got cooler,
odder, and more idiosyncratic as ROB VASEY's audio insurgency progressed.
Ed Ball of O Level (and later the Times and Teenage Film Stars) saw
Dry Rib first in late 1978 and promptly signed them to his new Clockwork
label. He writes, "Dry Rib were a late '70s three piece group
of some indefinable power-not Powerful in the obvious sense, as in
everyone slugging out the same riff... More the power of musical and
lyrical imagination... Rob Vasey's guitar style of blurred chord stylings
coupled with continuous tremolo arm pre-empted My Bloody Valentine
(or anyone else) by the best part of a decade." Twenty songs
packaged with photos, lyrics and extended notes.

Final Solution
Brotherman OST
PS, US He was a pusher that became a preacher. A gangster pimp serving
soup from the trunk of his Coup Deville. A mutant cross between Robin
Hood and Friar Tuck. Everyman, our man on the street, Brotherman.
Continuing a tradition that began with Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss
Song, and culminated with Shaft and Superfly, Brotherman was a blaxploitation
film set to hit screens in 1975. Prior to the script being finished,
the producers commissioned an original soundtrack to be performed
by THE FINAL SOLUTION, a fledgling vocal group from Chicago's west
side. The ten-song album draws deeply from Curtis Mayfield's well,
certainly, but the proof in the pudding is CARL WOLFOLK's unique guitar
style-a combination of flamenco and funk-that stabs around the four
part harmonies. In classic Numero fashion, before even one foot of
film was shot, the plug was pulled and the movie was canceled. Dragged
around for 30 years by songwriter and arranger Wolfolk, the tapes
of his life's work have finally been mixed, and the soundtrack album
has been augmented to include two orchestrated instrumentals intended
for the film. Having no stills from the film to work with, the Numero
Group tasked Minneapolis' Burlesque of North America to paint a cover
that could withstand the scrutiny of any blaxploitation poster geek.
The deluxe single disc set is housed in our standard slipcase, with
a plush booklet detailing the known history of the film and the group
that created the music.

Freedom's Children
Retrospective [3 CD boxset] VERY LIMITED!
PS, GERMANY Deluxe 3CD box set edition of these albums, previously
issued on vinyl by Shadoks. These 3 CDs will also be available separately,
but this version puts these together in a heavy cardboard box, like
the Blops CD on Shadoks. This box set edition is limited to 300 copies.
Shadoks Music presents all three records by Freedom's Children, now
collected together, after two years of struggle and hard work with
tons of help from collectors in South Africa, England, Austria and
the U.S.A. Since all mastertapes were lost in a big fire, they had
to be mastered from the original vinyl, using two or three mint copies
of each album to make the best possible sounding product. All three
albums are the most wanted albums ever from South Africa. Some call
them "The Pink Floyd of South Africa," and if the political
situation in S.A. at that time would have been easier, they would
have had the same status in the international music market as Pink
Floyd. Beautifully composed songs, amazing instrumentation, well-crafted
guitar work and great singers. The extra-heavy prog sound beats most
albums in the same direction coming from the UK or U.S.A. Three absolute
masterpieces. LIMITED TO 300 COPIES!!!

Guerrero, Tommy
Return of the Bastard
PS, US A brand new album from professional skater, artist, musician,
producer and businessman TOMMY GUERRERO (JET BLACK CRAYON). Tommy's
music, like his graphic design, is beguilingly simple. He sounds like
a guy fucking around on his front stoop-and maybe that's exactly accurate-but
the results touch you down to your toes. His melodies dance lightly
around your head while the rhythms build under your feet. His is soul
music, made by a street kid raised on Santana and Bill Withers, with
more than a little nod to The Clash and Public Enemy in there, too.
Features guest appearances from CURUMIN (Quannum Records), FREDO ORTIZ
(percussionist for the BEASTIE BOYS), and CHUCK TREECE (BLKTOP PROJECT,
MCRAD, BAD BRAINS). Previous releases on Mo'Wax, Galaxia, Function

PS, US This album does not mark a radical departure from his previous

Human Eye
Fragments of the Universe Nurse
PS, US Watching HUMAN EYE onstage is like being attacked by space
aliens. They are like something dreamed up by Philip K. Dick during
an acid flashback, a science fiction sound world with rock and roll
roots assaulting all of the senses. Their second full-length release,
Fragments of the Universe Nurse, continues their musical mission with
more mind-derailing time changes, laser-beam synthesizer blasts, hallucinatory
overdriven echoplex, and a generally brutal assemblage of disparate
elements from a sonic palette that ranges from mid-'70s punk rock
to psychedelia, prog, free jazz, and Sci-Fi movie sound effects. Writhing
giant robot snakes, huge illuminated plastic eyeballs, flying T.V.
sets, and exploding flourescent paint-filled balloons only heighten
the atmosphere of transformed reality and universal anxiety suggested
by Human Eye's music. The musical structures whirl and explode in
an entangled storm of opposites fusing together and colliding with
strange precision. On first listen, you might think you're hearing
traces of Beefheart, Germs, Chrome, Soupy Sales, the Residents, Hendrix,
Gentle Giant, and the Boredoms. By the second or third listen, you'll
(hopefully) be too disoriented to think, analyze, etc. Singer/guitarist

songs she writes and sings are both more beautiful and more haunting

Kid Montana
Temperamental + Singles
PS, UK LTM is pleased to announce a double CD set from Kid Montana,
the Belgian electronic pop duo who recorded a string of acclaimed
releases for chic label Les Disques du Crépuscule between 1984
and 1987. Temperamental + Singles gathers together the Temperamental
album from 1986 with six track mini-album The Las Vegas Gold Rush
and singles such as Revisiting Yalta, Spooky, Love May Be Blind and
Still Colour Waiting. Featured producers include Marc Moulin and dan
Lacksman (of Telex) and Gilbert Lederman (Berntholer). Digitally remastered,
the 31 track, 2 hour 2xCD compilation also includes all tracks from
the rare debut ep Today from 1982, and three tracks from a final unreleased
demo recorded in 1987. The CD also includes MPEG versions of the video
clips for Still Color Waiting and Spooky, directed by Serge Bergli.
Artist biography: Kid Montana was initially the nom de guerre of Jean-Marc
Lederman, formerly keyboard player with Digital Dance and Fad Gadget.
After an experimental debut EP on Sandwich Records in 1982, Lederman
spent time in London playing with The The and Gene Loves Jezebel,
before recruiting American-born singer Dudley Kludt for the second
Kid Montana single, Revisiting Yalta, in 1984. The following year
the duo signed with Les Disques du Crépuscule, releasing a
run of sophisticated electro-pop records, although mainstream success
eluded them. The duo split in 1987, Lederman afterwards recording
several hard electronic albums with The Weathermen, and with Julianne
Regan as Jules et Jim.

PS, Germany "The core of Laghonia is a combination of Peruvian
and US members, Saul Cornejo Vocals, Guitar, Manuel Cornejo on Drums,
and David Levene on Lead Guitar and Vocals. All eight album tunes
were released on 45´s under the group name New Juggler Sound.
When the band changed name into Laghonia in 1970 the Glue album came
out as a kind of New Juggler Sound 45 rpm compilation. The music is
catchy psychedelic Rock´n´Roll stuff, with lyrics in English,
intense fuzz, wah-wah Guitars, Hammond B-2 organ and a massive, variative
percussion sounds. The songwriting is Beatles/Yardbirds-influenced
and the music goes into Santana, Cream, Hendrix and other different
directions. 4 bonus tracks and a bio round off this masterpiece of
the complete New Juggler Sound recordings perfectly. Comes in a high
quality digipak cover (same material as the Mystic Siva CD) with an

Lykke Li
Youth Novels
PS, US New album from hyped Swedish siren! ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Advance
hype fueled by the Little Bit EP had Lykke Li pegged as the next in
a growing string of cool-kid-approved perfect-pop fixes to leak out
from Sweden's endless supply, but Youth Novels doesn't entirely play
out as expected, with neither Robyn's electronic dance-pop precision
nor the affable strumming of Jens Lekman or Peter Björn and John
(whose Björn Yttling handles production duties here and co-wrote
every track). Although it does bear some traces of these approaches,
as well as El Perro Del Mar's earnest melancholia, it's decidedly
odder and harder to pin down, proffering an idiosyncratic, stripped-down
vision of pop that foregrounds repetition and simplicity over familiarity
or even melody (though rest assured, there is ample catchiness to
be had here)."

Manhattan Love Suicides
Burnt Out Landscapes
PS, US "This Leeds foursome's fuzzed-out dream-pop recalls not
only JAMC, but also the willowy female vocals of C86 alumni the Shop
Assistants. However, rather than revive the sexualized gore of the
80s movie underground-- or the black-leather tropes of recent retro
noise-poppers like the Raveonettes-- the Manhattan Love Suicides'
elf-titled debut throbs with the giddy vulnerability of the scene
that the NME's C86 compilation helped spawn." Pitchfork. The
Manhattan Love Suicides have a mission. They want to write, record
and release songs on their own accord. The DIY ethic is in their blood.
The idea of getting their name out there by writing, recording, and
releasing as many songs as you can as a way of promotion is old fashioned
at best. This collection of songs is taken from the 4 singles they
released over last year with additional unreleased songs as well as
some live recordings. The Manhattan Love Suicides wear their influences
on their sleeves and never has Phil Spector's Wall of Sound met so
cohesively with Jesus and Mary Chain's. The hypnotic noise and feedback
are highlighted with a pounding beat and heart breaking female vocals.
Just when you are thinking the shoegaze drone will go on the hooks
come in and you hear the girl group sounds to keep you from zoning
out. For influences think Jesus and Mary Chain, Galaxie 500, The Velvet
Underground, The Rosehips, The Golden Dawn, Meat Whiplash... that
kind of stuff. Basically these are the bands that every hipster /record
store clerk covets in their own collection. The Manhattan Love Suicides
feature former members of the much buzzed about Leeds's band Pop Threat.
A much talked and written about band that sparked Sonic Youth and
Velvet Underground comparisons that released several singles, eps,
and tracks that ended up on compilations. Who's songs played by John
Peel landed them releases on Fierce Panda and Mook Records.

of the best tracks on the Rainbow Promise LP and solid all through.
Well-written songs combine perfectly with the jammy SF ballroom sound
popular among the Jesus Music bands, recalling the mellow aspects
of Moby Grape in particular. The epic, spine-chilling title track
is especially good. A loose, understated live in the basement recording
adds to the appeal. This album is undoubtedly one of the classics
from the era." --Acid Archives. "As with all Erebus Records
titles, this was remastered at the legendary Abbey Road Studios. It
is presented here for the first time on CD." Originally released

PS, US Minisnap's "Bounce Around" is the first release by
members of The Bats without lead singer/songwriter Robert Scott. Kay
Woodward takes the lead with her strong but delicate vocals and her
own turn at song writing. The same rhythm section of The Bats is there
so the comparisons are hard not to make. The folksy Velvet Underground
sound keeps chugging along with Kaye's vocals leading the way. Minisnap
features the songwriting skills of Kaye Woodward (vocals, guitar)
along with fellow Bats, Paul Kean (bass, guitar) and Malcolm Grant
(drums) plus Marcus Winstanley from The Undercurrents on guitar. It
isn't often that a member of one of your favorite bands steps from
supporting to lead role and completely bowls you over. Kaye does so
with her angelic voice and heart filled songs.

Moondoggies
Don t Be A Stranger
PS, US Seattle's Moondoggies play timeless American music. Warm three-part
harmonies, gothic Rhodes organ, and wanderlust guitar mark a sound
rooted in boogie blues and cosmic country. Whipsmart songwriting leads
to hook-heavy tunes that bristle with originality. Shades of gospel,
blues, rock, and country commingle, and wall-of-sound harmonies radiate
joy and passion. The influences of The Band, The Byrds, and especially
early Grateful Dead are evident, though The Moondoggies' lyrical economy
and compositional sensibility render these tracks fresh and unique.

Noyes Brothers, The
Sheep From Goats
PS, UK The Boutique Label presents the first ever CD reissue of Sheep
From Goats by The Noyes Brothers, originally released in 1980 on the
highly collectible Object Music label. The Noyes Brothers were Steve
Solamar of cult band Spherical Objects and Steve Miro, who also recorded
as a solo artist for Object. The album (a double set) as recorded
between October 1979 and May 1980 at Graveyard Studios, and contain
100 minutes of experiments and improvisations, ranging from Eno-esque
electronics to improvisation and side-long excursions such as A Good
Question and It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time. Released in July
1980 in a limited edition of 1000 copies, it sounds like little else
recorded before or since. Pioneering Manchester label Object Music
ceased operations in 1981, after Steve Solamar resolve a lifelong
contradiction by becoming a woman. As part of this process Solamar
even destroyed his own master tapes, and since then the Object catalogue
has languished in undeserved obscurity (with the exception of The
Passage). However an Object anthology has now been released as part
of the Auteur Labels series on LTM, as well as the complete Spherical
Objects back catalogue on CD. The artist formerly known as Steve Solamar
is alive and well, and lives a happy spiritual and musical life. Steve
Miro resides in Glastonbury.

Performing Ferrets
No One Told Us
PS, US Twenty-eight songs from one of DIY's iconic bands, including
most of their astonishingly scarce LP, which music-historian/journalist/DIY
enthusiast JOHAN KUGELBERG described as "the most seminal LP
to come out of DIY... Fantastic over-enthusiastic juvenilia of an
almost supernatural beauty." Whether or not the name was ironic,
THE PERFORMING FERRETS were very much a performing band-whose songs
clearly grew out of the way they interacted. A curious rhythm, an
engaging riff, an arresting lyrical snippet, and frequently a Melodica
tumble and writhe, ferret-like, into song / groove / experiments that
stood unique on the UK indie post-punk scene. There's a touch of The
Fall and the TV Personalities, a little garage and Beat, and a dry
wit that had more to do with the Ferrets' favorite authors and comedians
than anyone from the class of '77, but the Ferrets' response to D.I.Y.
was all their own. Include's a 12-page booklet, along with photos,
artifacts, and almost 80 minutes of the Ferrets' finest on the CD.

Pink Reason
Winona
PS, US "During a show with hardcore punks Hatefuck, DeBroux and
company traveled to Winona, Minnesota. After a five-hour drive to
the town, wasted locals, angry punks and gnarled three-legged dogs
greeted them by leading them into a commandeered park. Inside the
park, DeBroux found "the ultimate punk rock experience"
with townies huffing rubber glue and mohawk-brandishing kids starting
fights with crusties. The show ended and the locals gave the band
three dollars for their troubles. A few kids asked DeBroux and company
to chip in the three dollars on a keg. Soon, the crowd dispersed and
left the band with no money or place to stay. The band wound up sleeping
on an island between Minnesota and Wisconsin and breaking up soon
thereafter. He wrote the first Pink Reason song, "Winona,"
about this experience." - Steve Kobak from Blastitude #25

Pocahaunted
Island Diamonds
PS, US There's a working theory out there about Pocahaunted: either
every record they've released is a concept album, or none of them
are. There's good proof to support both camps. The truth, of course,
might lie somewhere in between the two (if that's possible -- which
it probably isn't), but Island Diamonds makes a stronger case for
the former. The ladies' longstanding studio union with Eagle Rock
guru Bobb Bruno has explored an array of terrains in the past, but
their partnership on Diamonds... transformed Pocahaunted into a way
weirder, doper, and dancier creature than ever before, inspired in
equal parts by Manda's obsession with Max Romeo tropical soul and
bad acid jazz and Bethany's abiding love of mainstream rap and the
Cocteau Twins (that sounds like it'd be a nightmare, right?). Naturally,
the results don't really resemble any of the influences they may have
attempted to channel during these sessions, but so what? Low-lidded
drum machine beats, sparse guitar chimes, and the occasional air-raid
siren cycle beneath a night sky of cooing, crying, and caterwauling
in the classic PHAUNT mode/model. This CD digipak edition is a repress
of the sold out LP on Arbor, with all new collage-portrait artwork
by the band, plus two bonus tracks added on (one an outtake from the
Diamonds sessions, one the unedited mix of their Bored Fortress 7"
single) and a freaky digital music video for 'Ashes Is White' created
by part-time Pocahaunted bassist/best friend Luis Naranjo. Edition

Qua
Silver Red
PS, AUSTRALIA "Silver Red" has been an evolving piece of
music from Qua aka Cornel Wilzcek. Over the course of two years Silver
Red began to take shape, with the piano and guitar source material
originally recorded in 2005 at a live performance in Melbourne. This
source material was loaded into an ever-growing custom software patch
controlled by a French invention, the Lemur - a multi-touch, programmable
screen - that eventually became the backbone of the composition. While
it evokes ideas from Steve Reich, Philip Glass and other rhythmic
minimalist composers, it also owes much to colorful explorations of
artists such as Moondog and Roberto Cacciapaglia. In 2007, Laurence
Pike, of Sydney bands Pivot (Warp Records) and Triosk (Leaf Records),
took to the drums performing with Qua live and in the studio. As well
as playing on Qua's upcoming pop album, Laurence played a one take
drum part that was then loaded into the custom Qua software patch
and re-performed by Cornel, thus lending it the same treatment as
the other source material. "One Second" is a reaction to
"Silver Red". It felt necessary to somehow resolve the album
and boil it down to a few simple sounds. It looks at Silver Red from
the view point of artists such as Ennio Morricone, Kristoff Komeda
and Scott Walker and somehow extrudes one second of time from Silver
Red.

drenched in colour & inspired by life, love, poverty, rebellion,
and, of course, "jumpers, coke, sweet mary jane". The album
is Cold Fact & what's more intriguing is that its maker - a shadowy
figure known as Rodriguez - was, for many years, lost too. A decade
ago, he was rediscovered working on a Detroit building site, unaware
that his defining album had become not only a cult classic, but for
the people of South Africa, a beacon of revolution. Co-produced by
Beastie Boys/Mos Def sample heavy guitarist Dennis Cofffey. Featuring

Discoballs: A Disco Tribute To Pink Floyd [re-issue]
PS, US Back in 1979, way before the flood of tribute albums swamped
your local record store's bins, this curiosity featuring disco versions
of Pink Floyd songs came out on Warner Bros. Now, usually when you
put the words 'disco' and 'tribute' together in the same phrase, the
result is not going to be pretty. What does, however, make this album
reissue-worthy is that two of the folks behind this, Claude Engel
and Jannick Top, were members of the legendary French prog group Magma,
and they were no doubt instrumental in the adventurous choice of tunes
on this record. Sure, 'Money' and 'Have a Cigar', which was a minor
hit, are not such a stretch, but disco versions of 'Interstellar Overdrive',
'Arnold Layne' and 'One of These Days'?! Not even Syd Barrett in his
wildest dreams could have imagined such a thing! It's easily the most
danceable Pink Floyd album ever!

Scharber, Quinn & The...
Being Nice Won't Save Milwaukee
PS, US "Being Nice Won't Save Milwaukee isn't an album about
saving Milwaukee, which is exactly why it will..." Straight from
the mouth of Quinn Scharber, a take on what it's like to be in a band
in a city that can either say 'yay' or 'nay' in a heartbeat. A very
fickle nest in which to drop your album into if you're the sort of
band who are frail of heart. Fortunately, this isn't the case for
the members of Milwaukee's proprietors of a particularly engaging
blend of garage, blues and power pop: strong hearts, worn on sleeves.
The band's ideals and sound has influences wrought by Teenage Fanclub,
Big Star, The Replacements, Wilco and even The Jesus and Mary Chain.
Having honed their songwriting skills in Milwaukee bands such as The
Nice Outfit, The Static Model and Menlo, The Quinn Scharber's have
brought these experiences to the practice space and used them to form
a solid set of songs. Stories about latest flames, drinking and giving
life a fighting chance are all storied along by Scharber's young Paul
Westerberg vocals.

Producer Bobby Miller really helps the group find their groove --

Souls On Board
Blood Face
PS, AUSTRALIA Like some unholy breeding ground, SOULS ON BOARD are
loyal to an ever-evolving matrimony - beauty and dirt, ugliness and
invention, dumb and smart, mind-blowing power and grace. BLOOD FACE
is the new EP, the Melbourne group's second release after their "hurtling
and assured" self-titled EP debut of 2005. Released by wunderkinds
Low Transit Industries, the EP saw the band draw comparisons to The
Pixies & Sonic Youth. BLOOD FACE picks up the hazardous extremes
of that first rugged EP and beats them into a new shape. A shape with
pointed edges, electricity in the veins and a wall of psychedelic

Stereolab
Chemical Chords
PS, US Their eleventh album is a collection of purposefully short,
dense, fast pop songs brimming with Motown-like drums, baroque-pop
brass and string arrangements, and mellifluous vocal performances.
It is, nonetheless, classic Stereolab; like all their best work, a
perfect equipoise between an implausibly cool past and a shamelessly
exotic future. "England's lounge-pop heroes" - Blender.
"Stereolab's unmistakable cosmonaut pop...a trademarked stamp
of the 90s. No one else managed to duplicate their retro-futurist
harmony" - Fader.

PS, US First released by Radio France Internationale (RFI) in 1998
& the title track appeared on a Smithsonian Folkways compilation
in 2000. This release is the first U.S. issue of the entire album
& its first-ever release on LP anywhere. This is a group of many
members, mostly ethnomusicological musicians, based in Medan City
in North Sumatra, Indonesia. They play contemporary music, exploring
conceptually or instrumentally the sounds of African, Middle Eastern,
Indian, Sufi Pakistani, Eastern European & Southeast Asian &
particularly Sumatran traditions. The world grows closer & smaller,

Sun Araw
Boat Trip
PS, US Boat Trip might be some hidden soundtrack to Donkey Kong, warp-whistling
straight into Ayahuasca Country. In about twenty minutes, Sun Araw
manages to navigate a psychedelic jungle cruise through canopy din
& spooked drone, then he noses the boat out of the water and lifts
into uncharted dub-spheres. The back half of this entranced tour is
like being (fortunately) trapped inside an old Upsetters jam played
at half-speed with twice the shaman-chant and reverb-drenched percussion.
Normally we wouldn't trust taking this kind of trip with just anybody,
but with wheel and rudder alike in the hands of Magic Lantern co-captain
Cameron Stallones, we can sip our yage-of-choice in peace and share
the Sun Araw vision as one. Limited to 500 on black vinyl.

Tiffany Shade, The
S/T
PS, US Exact repro 180 gram virgin vinyl pressing. "In the fall
of 1967, The Tiffany Shade consisted of Bob Leonard, Tom Schuster,
Mike Barnes and new bassist Robb Murphy." "...A rather charming
teen garage presentation of what is economy fare West Coast folkrock-psych
sounds, plus a bunch of tracks that make no sense at all. LP opens
strongly with several raw trips on the early Airplane style; cutting
fuzz leads and excellent Nuggets vocals should appeal to anyone. Side
2 is less garagey & more goofy top 40, but listenable with class
points reaped for a Love cover. All over a bit better than I expected,
with some prime slices of '60s cheese-psych. Superb cover artwork,

As always, Tindersticks take their signature sound and move it forward,
never sounding stagnant or stale. Formed in 1991, this UK group exists
in a dark, romantic netherworld where Scott Walker replaces Elvis
as cultural pivot point. Their moody, string-laced arrangements frame
frequently gloomy lyrical themes given voice by basso profundo Staples,

Tokens
Both Sides Now
PS, UK The title kind of gives the game away here, it being somewhat
a game of two halves! A semi concept follows the title of the exquisite
baroque cover of the Joni Mitchell tune...The Tokens are pictured
on the cover in off-duty mode, casually dressed and with a cigar on
the go. Side one consists of more baroque re-workings of modern folk
rock standards, covering label mates Melanie and The Lemon Pipers
creditably, as well as doing a stripped down beauty of a cover of
'Don't Worry Baby', which surely influenced The Beach Boys later live
revamps of their early repertoire. Side two revisits The Tokens past
in the manner of their later 'Oldies Are Now!' project, with their
first two hits 'Tonight I Fell In Love' and 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight',
and their soft-pop masterpiece 'I Hear Trumpets Blow' among others,
being reinvented in the style of side one.

and minimalist percussion replacing the wall of guitars behind James
Graham's Glaswegian burr.

to respond to the shifting and expanding field of geography. Utilizing
sound as a medium to articulate this field of research, the artists
were invited to create a work that reflects on the following statement.
"Geography is an ongoing force shaping our understandings of
the environments around us and, in turn, experiences ongoing transformation
and development. Considering not only the natural world, but also
culture, economy and politics in diverse settings and across many
scales, contemporary geography acts as a glue - integrating disparate
research streams and continuing to provide insights into our relations
with space and place." On Audible Geography, 11 of the world
leading sound artists consider the scope of geography in the contemporary
world. The results are as varied as they are intriguing. The final

Splendid Isolation

Sjöberg, VED, Peter Jackson, Peter Nilsson, Redmalm, Enheten
för musik och melodi, Malkovic, Erik de Vahl, Band in a Box,
Flow Flux Clan, Robotboy, and Jian. Between January and December 2007
Friendly Noise released 18 mp3 singles offered as free downloads from
www.friendlynoise.se. From the start it was intended to be a one-year-long
project. The idea was simple: contributions chosen by us from our
extended family of old friends and new discoveries, usually two songs,
together with an introduction by the artists themselves and a picture
to illustrate and enhance, once or twice a month. This was meant as
a complement to our CD releases, and a chance to easily distribute
great songs, in cases where the album context isn't necessary. These
two ways of distribution aren't contradictory, they're related, as
we stated on our website. Soon we realized the series had become a
success, both when it came to the quality of the output and the amount
of interest generated. So "Splendid Isolation" - our third
compilation after "Friendly People Making Noise" (2003)
and "Are You Scared To Get Happy?" (2006) - is our way of
documenting the series through a selection of the songs and thus giving
them a more official kind of release. The record is also a celebration
of five years of Friendly Noise as a label. The order of the songs
on the record isn't chronological, it's instead our attempt to make
the record sound as good as possible as a whole. TRACKLIST: 1. Bognor
Regis (Peter Jackson) 2. (Jack) Lullaby (Viktor Sjöberg) 3. Rondo

Wilson, Phil
Industrial Strength (2X7")
PS, US As main songwriter and singer of mid-'80s English pop legends
the JUNE BRIDES, PHIL WILSON's influence looms large over nearly all
UK guitar pop since. A bridge between early '80s groups like Josef
K and the later Creation scene, Phil and the June Brides kept the
flame burning for earnest, tuneful pop underpinned by fiercely strummed,
jangly guitars. Though their career was a brief three years, their
achievements are notable: all four of their singles and their sole
LP topped the UK indie charts, they recorded several BBC sessions,
including one for John Peel, and they toured with such heavyweights
as The Smiths, Go-Betweens, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Mekons,
Alternative TV, The Television Personalities and The Wedding Present.
As a path to getting back into songwriting, Phil has decided to learn
other people's songs, "pulling them apart, seeing how they worked
and putting them back together in the wrong order." Industrial
Strength is the first fruit of those experiments. Recording at home,
totally solo, using acoustic guitars, mandolin and banjo, Phil has
re-worked four songs from Throbbing Gristle, Kraftwerk, Faust and
contemporary German band S/T. While guitar folk/pop and experimental
rock might not seem like the most obvious combination, Phil has dug
deep to expose the melodic roots of these songs. The layered acoustic
instruments and skeletal programmed beats lay down a mesmerizing drone-folk
groove, and the result is a wonderful, hypnotic record that reveals
fresh nuances on each listen. It's a very auspicious new beginning
for Mr. Wilson that points to more fascinating music yet to come.

Family Afloat (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 9TH)

from the likes of Rolling Stone, The New York Times, Alternative Press,
URB & Chicago Tribune), the band returned home ready for new challenges,
& made the communal decision to return to the more stable life
of work weeks & strong roots. It was a choice that also ultimately
made the concept of home central to this 2008 album. The songs sound
like preparation: the family has grown now, to include new ones being
formed in Chicago. But there's no settling down in these songs: family
life is raw & confusing, as uncomfortable & unexpected &

a pop/rock album full of hooky choruses, call and response guitars

good feeling! Just as you'd expect from this seasoned music family.
Bask in the summer sun with the fourth album from the golden state's
California Oranges and a healthy dose of the sunshine power pop they're
known for. Underlying the power is a healthy dose of pop: Delicately
concocted, contemplative songs exploring life's ups and downs. The
quintet has hit their stride on Imperial Hearts. The record features
the same line up as their 2005 release Souvenirs: John Conley (Holiday
Flyer), Verna Brock (Rocketship, Beanpole, Holiday Flyer, Sinking
Ships), Ross Levine (Sinking Ships), Katie Haley (Holiday Flyer, Sinking
Ships), and Matt Levine (Sinking Ships). The album was jointly produced
by the California Oranges and Dana Gumbiner (Night Night, Deathray).
Imperial Hearts was mixed by long time friend of the band, producer/engineer,
Eric Stenman (Saves the Day, The Comas, The Cab). The California Oranges
construct songs filled with, "soaring boy/girl harmonies, rapid-fire
licks of squeaky clean and buzz saw dirty guitar work, consistently
up-tempo beats, and melodies that would make tone deaf kitten haters

PS, US The final installment in a trilogy of EP's recorded for Acuarela.
This is the most commercial & (shockingly) danceable thing they've
ever recorded. Part Bacharach, part Television, part Orange Juice,
the E.P. shares the pristine clarity, light & shade of 'God Save
the Clientele', but adds a new element of summer pop perfection. This
is the group as a hazily remembered 1970s cartoon series, all distanced
off-key colours; imaginary summer hits, radio waves
beamed in from a dream-discotheque.

Clientele, The
That Night, A Forest Grew (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 9TH)
PS, SPAIN This is the third, and last, of a trilogy of E.P.s the Clientele
have recorded for Acuarela. They have always used the Acuarela E.P.s
as a way to stretch out between albums, to create a through-the-looking-glass
version of the band that shadows the better-known history of their
albums. 'Ariadne' experimented with drones and minimalism; 'The Lost
Weekend' stretched the foggy sound of their debut to epic proportions.
In contrast "That Night, a Forest Grew' is the most commercial
and -shockingly- danceable thing they've ever recorded. Part Bacharach,
part Television, part Orange Juice, the E.P. shares the pristine clarity,
light and shade of 'God Save the Clientele', but adds a new element
of summer pop perfection. This is The Clientele as a hazily remembered
1970s cartoon series, all distanced off-key colors; imaginary summer
hits, radio waves beamed in from a dream-discotheque.

S-T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 26TH)
PS, US Over the past 2 yrs, they have amassed a large local following

functions almost like a theatrical event, as the band presents a thematic
environment in which viewers are called to interact w/ props &
exotic dancers. Their sound is the combination of obvious rock 'n'
roll classics like the Stones, Stooges, Velvets, & Dolls, along
w/ less likely influences such as Mazzy Star, Li'l Wayne, & Plan

title from a traditional folk ballad about the Titanic, but it also
refers to DESVEAUX's Grandmother, which whom she is very close &
who sadly lost her 1st husband at sea. Ever since the release of her
debut album & after much touring w/ Bruce Cockburn, Archer Prewitt,
Califone & Howe Gelb - Desveaux is now a much more confident bandleader,
which is apparent on this album. It is a bold step for her - the song
writing is assured &, as always, her voice & range takes center

Girl Talk
Feed The Animals (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 23TH)
PS, US Pittsburgh artist Gregg Gillis (a.k.a. Girl Talk) has scrupulously
created music from samples for over eight years. His fourth album
on the Illegal Art label, Feed the Animals, continues his sonic evolution
towards his party-infested live show and steps even closer towards
a creation that is centered on pop musicality rather than attention-deficit
sample splicing. Girl Talk has been known to underground audiences
for several years, but it wasn't until 2006 that Gillis crossed over
and caught the attention of a larger audience. With Rolling Stone,
SPIN, Blender, Pitchfork, and even Beck including Night Ripper in
their "best albums of 2006" lists, Girl Talk has gone on
to be booked by major festivals (Coachella, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo,
Virgin, All Points West, Pitchfork, DEMF, etc.), and solicited for
remixes (Beck, Thrill Jockey, Tokyo Police Club, Grizzly Bear, Simian
Mobile Disco, Peter Bjorn & John, TeddyBears, and Of Montreal).
And with roughly 200 live shows over the last couple of years, Gillis
has consistently played larger venues to capacity crowds (every date
on his 2007 North American tour with Dan Deacon sold out). PRESS QUOTES:
"One endlessly entertaining mega mash-up" - Rolling Stone
"Gillis' craft is stunning and his tastes are exquisitely diverse"
- Blender "A masterpiece that employs an estimated 300 samples"
- SPIN "Massively recommended ... the voracious music fan's dream"
--- Pitchfork "Media assassins Illegal Art come forth with yet
another brilliant Girl Talk record." - XLR8R "Sounds like
your favorite mash-up DJ after about 11 espressos" - Entertainment
Weekly "Mashes together booty-shaking rap, iconic indie rock,
and, uh, ABBA" - MTV.com.

PS, US "A step into the void" is how Grubbs (GASTR DEL SOL)
describes his first solo album since 2004. Here Grubb's presents five
longish songs & one eleven-minute instrumental floor rumbler,
and the album can't be said to fall in either a pop or experimental
genre. Much like Gastr Del Sol's recordings, arrangements take their
own sweet, otherworldly time to unfold, and you're likely to discover
that the undertow is stronger than you reckoned & that you wind

adds warmth & intimacy to the recordings. Huge press buzz from

Judys, The
Land Of Plenty [re-issue] (DELAYED, PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 2008)
PS, US First ever official release for The Judys last album, recorded
but never released! In 1990, The Judy's set out to record a new album
with a new Judy's sound. Featuring the lineup that had been established
over a number of years the band, including Barbara Donaho (keyboards/guitars),
Lee Malone (bass), and Darwin Keys (drums), set out to explore new
horizons musically and thematically. Land of Plenty injected multi-layered
keyboards and guitars, stacked vocals, a gospel choir, and even a
bit of banjo into the band's palatte and sought to realize Bean's
vision of a new Americana musical landscape. Broad in its scope and
daring in its expansion of the band's definition of itself, Land of
Plenty was shelved when the group disbanded before the CD's release.
While a handful of copies have been given out, this is first time
this long sought-after project has been available to the general public.

Judys, The
Moo [re-issue] (DELAYED, PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE 2008)
PS, US The original 'Moo' album finally re-issued on CD for the first
time! CD sports seven bonus tracks, mainman David Bean's "Modomusic"
EP. Released almost four years to the day after Washarama and following
an eighteen month hiatus, The Judy's Moo album has a slightly more
progressive sound: richer production values, fuller arrangements and
thicker harmonies. As the band returned to the stage in 1985, this
was the album that showed the band's maturity and development as songwriters
and musicians. The twelve songs on Moo, laced with solid-state irony,
well-placed cynicism and standard issue Judys' wit, show the band
at the peak of their creativity and acted as a springboard for their
live extravaganzas. The album was released with The Moo Tour - a month
of live performances across the state which included giant cereal
boxes, moving conveyer belts of milk cartons, and a dancing cow while
the band donned milkman uniforms. Critically acclaimed and fan-revered,
The Moo Album continues to be a milestone in Texas pop music.

Machine Fabriek & Stephen Vitiello
Box Music (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 10TH)
PS, US Rutger and Stephen sort of accidentally met through e-mail.
A simple note regarding an ordering question for a CD led to an enthusiastic
e-mail conversation and climaxed in a musical collaboration. This
all happened in a very short period, both musicians being very inspired
by the concept of "exchange," as a means to cross space
and time -- Rutger living in the Netherlands and Stephen in Virginia.
Most of the time, when (electronic) musicians work together it's a
matter of swapping digital files. In this case they decided to do
something different and sent each other a box full of (mostly non-musical,
or musically non-functional) objects and recordings, with the "assignment"
to make music with those objects and all as source materials. As the
titles tell, we're talking about an egg cutter, thumb piano, a broken
kraakle box, rice, chocolate sprinkles, old cassette tapes, a broken
7" record, etcetera, etcetera. Both musicians made two of their
own solo tracks with the box they received, and the last track was
done together by Rutger adding sounds and processing to a piece started
by Stephen. For Rutger/ Machinefabriek this is part of his most delicate
work. For Stephen, it was a new and extremely enjoyable form of long-distance
collaboration. Machinefabriek: Rutger Zuydervelt, better known as
Machinefabriek, lives in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Started as Machinefabriek
in 2004, he released 40+ small run home-made cdr's as well as work
for Type Records, Lampse, Digitalis, Staalplaat (Mort Aux Vaches)
and now 12K. A double remix cd was released in 2007, with interpetations
by Alva Noto, Pita, Mitchell Akiyama, Xela, Gert-Jan Prins and many
more. Collaborations (live or recording) include Steinbrüchel,
Jasper TX, Wouter van Veldhoven, Simon Nabatov, Frans de Waard, Aaron
Martin and Peter Broderick. Stephen Vitiello: Stephen Vitiello is
a sound and media artist based in Richmond, VA. CD releases include
Bright and Dusty Things (New Albion), Listening to Donald Judd (Sub
Rosa) and Untitled/Exchange, a collaborative CD with Michael J. Schumacher
(A Question of Re-Entry). Solo exhibitions of Vitiello's sound installations,
photographs and drawings have been presented at The Project, NY, Museum
52, London, the Texas Gallery, Houston, TX and Diapason, NYC. Group
exhibitions include the 2002 Whitney Biennial and the 2006 Biennial
of Sydney. Over the last 18 years, Stephen has collaborated with numerous
musicians and artists including Scanner, Pauline Oliveros, Andrew
Deutsch, Julie Mehretu and Tony Oursler.

Snowflake Midnight (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 30TH)
PS, US Swirling atmospherics and mantra-like lyrics abound on Mercury
Rev's newest work Snowflake Midnight. Recorded almost exclusively
in the band's Catskills, N.Y. laboratory, Snowflake Midnight sees
MR continue experiments with laser harps, ad-hoc computer programs
and random note generators resulting in a record that moves with grace
between avant garde and traditional pop sensibilities. Standout tracks
"Butterfly's Wing" and "Senses on Fire" exhibit
the emphasis on letting the music define itself, as free as possible
from human interference. Zooming in at nearly any magnification, Snowflake
Midnight appears to be a resplendent fractal folding in upon itself,
into something continually new, unpredictable and spontaneous, and
yet so subtly self-aware, that it never fails to resemble itself as
a whole.

Michna
Magic Monday (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 23RD)
PS, US Adrian Michna found his way as a DJ under his EGG FOO YOUNG
alias, earning him an URB "Next 100" nod in the process.
Production gigs for Bonde do Role & Diplo followed, allowing Michna
to put his deftness at both the drum machine & the trombone to
good use, creating tracks out of dense blankets of sound & texture.
Apart from the tightly woven musical amalgam of hip-hop, booty &
electro, it's the detailed process that makes Michna's debut album
move. Perhaps the most exciting aspect of the album is its rich element
of musicality; in an era when hip-hop tracks have devolved into two-note
keyboard loops, songs like "Skunk Walk" live up to their
name with full-bodied funk & live horns. When Ghostly owner, Sam
Valenti IV, asked Adrian which samples to clear, Adrian replied, "What

Owl Service, The And Alison O'Donnell
The Fabric of Folk EP (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 2ND)
PS, UK If you thought social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook
were just devices which sucked you into an unstoppable vortex of wasted
time, then think again. A chance discussion between Steven Collins
and Alison O'Donnell, formerly of legendary Irish prog-folk troupe
Mellow Candle, took place on such a website and out of that conversation
came the first fruits of this collaboration. The Fabric of Folk is
a 5-track EP featuring Collins' in his guise as main man of the Owl
Service, one generation of folk-rock crashing head-long into an earlier,
glorious era represented here by the considerable vocal talents of
Alison O'Donnell. Capturing the many different faces of folk-rock,
the five songs here - two are original compositions by the pair, one
of which was written with the Straw Bear Band's Dominic Cooper - are
perfectly formed, heartfelt and touching but with more than a hint
of darkness. This follows on from the Owl Service's previous release
for Static Caravan, the Cine 3" CD (VAN 140), and arrives alongside
their debut album A Garland of Song, which is being released on Southern
Records. Meanwhile, Alison's former band Mellow Candle have returned
to prominence on the back of the newly repackaged Swaddling Songs
- their solitary album release - which has been remastered and reissued
by Esoteric/Cherry Red. Inspired by a mutual recognition and respect,
the pairing of Collins' band with O'Donnell is a dreamy combination.
Imbued with a sense of revivalism, The Fabric of Folk is far from
backward-looking and instead concocts something incredibly new which,
while referencing the production techniques and masterful storytelling
of Brit-folk's heyday, is bubbling with new ideas and an inherent
knack for crafting sublime arrangements.

Sun on Sun (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 9TH)
PS, US 2nd album from PONTIAK, following up their debut 'Valley of
the Cats' released on their Fireproof label. This also follows close
on the heels of their great split LP w/ Arbouretum. The band is made
up of 3 brothers from the Blue Ridge farm country of Virginia - their
music is swaggering guitar rock that staddles the line between power
trio & something far more expansive in sound & scope. "(Their)
ominous, portentous music straddles a wide sonic rift valley, w/ references
that stretch from the southern latitudes fo Spain's Viaje A800 to
the northern majesty of Black Sabbath & Harvey Milk via the Doors"-Julian
Cope. CD version comes in 4 panel digipack.

Sailboats Are White
Turbo (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 9TH)
PS, AUSTRALIA As completely incidental as it may seem, the acronym
for Sailboats Are White is in fact SAW. Coincidence? Perhaps, but
it's also a pretty accurate musical description. You see, saws are
used to cut through things like bone, metal and possibly wood, likewise
though, Sailboats' music is just as fierce, cutting and destructive
to the senses as say, a lumberjack's saw would be to a maple tree.

Extended Play [Triptych for the child survivors of war and conflict]
(PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 10TH)
PS, US LIMITED EDITION 600. LINE is proud to release the latest audio
work from British composer and installation artist Janek Schaefer
based on his installation of the same title. Installation Reviews:
"a piece to return to again and again... haunting and lulling"
[The Wire, UK] "so inspirational, and in many ways very spiritual"
[Gerry Turvey] "I was so deeply touched by your piece" [Mandeep
Kaur Samra] Red is the colour of Life, of Death, and of Love. Scarlett,
my first child, was born in 2005, and since then I have been very
aware of how lucky we all are. have been constantly comparing this
to the fact that my mother was born in Warsaw in 1942 - the epicenter
of World War II. How opposite can two beginnings be? This inspired
me to produce the Extended Play installation, which continuously and
positively celebrates hope and new beginnings, for child survivors
in all situations around the world. The original idea for the composition
came from learning about the 'Jodoform' system of secret musical messages
that were broadcast by the BBC Service, during music they played was
given a particular meaning, which was interpreted by Polish Underground.
Discovered from the original Jodoform logbook, that the lovely Polish
folk song 'Tango Lyczakowskie', was broadcast on the day my mother
was born. Song describes how children in 1918, had been forced to
take up arms, in defense of their town. From this tune, chose a short
rising musical phrase, and with my arranger Michael Jennings, developed
a ten-minute score. Each of the three solo parts was then recorded
separately, edited, and cut onto vinyl. In the gallery, 3 x Cello
EP's, 3 x Piano EP's, and 3 x Violin EP's are played at either 33,
45, or 78rpm using nine retro record players. These play continuously,
and each was modified to stop playing briefly in response to the audience
moving around the exhibition. This has the effect of changing and
extending the composition, so that it is never the same again.

the one band that virtually everyone agrees on. Well respected &
critically adored for their instantly recognizable, earthy-meets-explosive
sound & for putting on really good shows. Their 2nd album here

of Talking Heads & the Doors. In a world of throwaway pop, this
quintet has built itself from the ground up, naturally & beautifully.

PS, US From behind closed doors since 1992, the Silver Jews released
a series of popular music records that earned the group dedicated
fans all over the world. But being a Silver Jews fan always meant
accepting you'd never live to see the day your favorite band would
take the stage. Then in 2006, after five albums & fifteen years,
David Berman decided to change all that. The band toured across America
& Europe, all the way to Israel, playing these, their first forty
shows, to a widespread outpouring of joy. SILVER JEW is a simple document
of one of those stops, whereupon the band played two shows in Tel
Aviv, and spent a profound afternoon in Jerusalem. All Region.

Sweet, Matthew
Sunshine Lies (ON SALE / PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 26TH)
PS, US SPECIAL PRE-ORDER PRICE! New album from Matthew Sweet joined
by Susanna Hoffs, Ric Menck and Richard Lloyd. Pretty Parasolly, dontcha
think? Without warning, this consummate artist just may have made
the album of his life, not by consciously trying to recapture the
brilliance of his three milestones, Girlfriend, Altered Beast and
100% Fun, but simply by following his big heart, while hot-wiring
the process between inspiration and execution so that there's no longer
any distance between them. With tongue only partly in cheek, Matthew
describes the new record's sound as "power-pop-folk-rock-psychedelic-melodic-singer-songwriter-type
stuff." That turns out to be an accurate general description,
but the real intrigue is in the details. By turns achingly melodic
and drivingly visceral, Sunshine Lies swirls with relatable emotion
and bad-ass attitude, seamlessly incorporating the artist's expansive
aesthetic from one end (poetry) to the other (noise). On Sunshine
Lies, Sweet intermixes his distinctive brand of shimmering folk rock
("Byrdgirl," "Daisychain," "Around You Now")
and signature goosebump ballads ("Feel Fear," "Pleasure
Is Mine," "Back of My Mind"), with the album's primary
impulse, what he refers to as "the crazy songs." These are
heady, arrangement-based pieces where anything goes in terms of tone,
texture and performance-the mindblowing "Time Machine,"
the balls-to-the-wall "Room to Rock," the brawny "Flying"
and the Who-like "Let's Love."

PITCHFORK: "While it's understandable to be skeptical of another
skinny dude with a mustache, a guitar, and a worn-out copy of The
Anthology of American Folk Music, the more time you invest in Shallow
Graves, the more you'll realize how unusually memorable it is. Ultimately,
Shallow Graves transcends comparison-- which is saying an awful lot,
given the popularity of its prototype-- and Matsson is a natural-born
folksinger, earnest, clever, and comforting."

but with more color & complexity, while also integrating the psychedelic
pulsating pound heard on Telescope Mind. Moving above & beyond
their first two releases, Tussle map out worlds upon worlds on Cream
Cuts, riding songs from creation to destruction to rebirth. Thom Monahan's
(Vetiver, Joanna Newsom, Silver Jews, Devendra Banhart) unconventional
production techniques & talent for capturing intimate performances
integrate with Tussle's krauty exploration of rhythm leading to the
bands most epic, experimental yet holistic release to date.

Unthank, Rachel & The Winterset
Bairns (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 26TH)
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "This second album from Rachel Unthank
& the Winterset, following the group's highly praised debut, is
a record that demands several plays to understand. It starts off in
uncompromising fashion, as the first verse of "Felton Lonnin"
is in Northumbrian dialect so deep as to be virtually incomprehensible
to an outsider (and Unthank's wavering vocal isn't exactly embracing).
But the song opens up, and it sets the tone well for the rest of the
disc. It's very much a folk record -- most of the songs are traditional
-- but it takes chances... There are some contemporary folk songs,
one from bandmember Belinda O'Hooley, but the most ambitious track
has to be a cover of Robert Wyatt's "Sea Song." Always a
very personal piece, it's one that doesn't lend itself easily to interpretation,
especially by an acoustic group, but Becky Unthank does an excellent
job on the vocal, while the arrangement, neatly subdued, is sympathetic
and true to the feel of the original. It's rare to hear a folk group
where piano stands as the central instrument (the fiddle often feels
like it's there in a supporting role), but they make it work, and
when the sisters harmonize in their singing, it can be quite sublime.
Time will shake off the hype that's attended them over the last couple
of years, but this is a band with real spark and invention."

Soft Airplance (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 9TH)

Thurston Moore at his most resolved and vital, Chad's emotive vocals
anchor these songs while tackling the pervasive themes of death and

drum beats, loops, samples, found sounds, unorthodox percussion, xylophones,
distortion, synthesizers, accordions, and more, Chad has made an album
that sounds bigger than one man.
