Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week

Wooden Shjips "Self-Titled" DCD $13.50 (Holy Mountain)
Massive, majestic psychedelic rock that dips hairy, hobbitty toes in a few different watershed decades; think Comets On Fire, Hawkwind, Suicide, Circle, and Spacemen 3 (and The Doors, shh, don’t tell anybody), plus the finest in classic 70s kraut and the latest in combustible Japanese psych. It’s the cosmic, more tripping West Coast equivalent of A Place To Bury Strangers’ recent NYC noise-rock resurrection, but in additon to the proverbial unholy racket, Wooden Shjips are beholden to flower power’s sweet blue smoke, poppy by-products, specialist fungi, and Electric Kool-Aid…and you just know their fog-machines are in full working order and hot-modded above and beyond municipal code. Limited edition bonus disc features The Shjips early vinyl output and an unedited version of “Dance, California”. Sound samples on the front page.

Acid Mothers Guru Guru
Psychedelic Navigator
PS, US AcidMothersGuruGuru features Mani Neumeier from the legendary and influential German Krautrock group Guru Guru as well as Kawabata Makoto and Atsushi Tsuyama from Japan's holy Acid Mothers Temple. The result is a fiery fantasy filled, loud/soft, colorful trans-generational psychedelic collaboration. The Acid Mothers Guru Guru started in a spontaneous session in March of 2006 in Nagoya, Japan. When the improvisation commenced the passionate excitement was clear to all in the room and it was then that this special psychedelic trio began. A Japanese tour was planned, an album was recorded and this recording is the fruit of this mutual musical admiration. While all involved will admit that this is a dream of collaborations it was the Acid Mothers Temple guys who were worshipping Guru Guru in their teens. The Acid Mothers Guru Guru is two generations of psychedelic rock joining forces for the 21st century.

Ahleuchatistas
Even in the Midst
PS, US Leaving audiences slack-jawed in amazement at SSXW, punk-rock dives across the USA and jazz festivals in Europe, their unique, high-energy, instrumental, technical, undefinable trio music for guitar, bass and drums continue to reach new heights as a performing and a recording unit. They make playing this tight, fast, complicated music sound effortles! This is their 4th album and the years together playing hundreds and hundreds of shows have created one of the most amazingly tight ensembles that you will ever hear or see. This album widens their sound a little bit; there's plenty of the insane, over-the-top playing that we've come to expect, but there's more room for improvisation here and also for more quiet moments as well. Incl an 8pp, full color booklet of Courtney Chappell's beautiful and disturbing art. With this album, both in terms of the sonics of the album and the performance itself, the band have made their best recorded statement yet. For fans of: Captain Beefheart, Don Caballero, Fantomas, Hella, Minutemen, Ruins. "What the bands success comes down to, though, is that theyre astonishingly together even on passages where it seems impossible to stay in sync."-Pitchfork

Old Things
PS, BELGIUM Old things explains why it took Jessica Bailiff so long to put out her third record. This album brings you a collection of rarities and unreleased material, recorded between 1999 and 2002, whilst also working on her critically acclaimed records on Kranky. Some songs have the familiar sound of her first records (Alan Sparhawk of Low still plays on one of them), but already hint in the direction of the more folky current sound. track list: Your sounds make patterns in my eyes Helpless Warren (Home version) Shadow Crush, version 2 Amethyst depression Maybe tomorrow Let time breathe Nicholson square 2 For April Figure eight (For Jonathan)

Black Cab
Jesus East [2007]
PS, GERMANY New album from Australian psych-o-nauts. Jesus East is something of an antidote to the fear and loathing of their debut album, Altamont Diary, blending late '60's and early '70's rock sounds with loops and subtle electronica over pulsing percussion and driving guitars reminiscent of some of the great German rock bands of the '70's. Jesus East evokes ghosts of the Velvet Underground, Can, Neu and coolest Beatle George Harrison's fascination with eastern sounds. UNCUT MAGAZINE (4 STARS): "The dark side of hippie-dom, updated and energised... Two years ago this Melbourne duo - Andrew Coates and James Lee - delivered a dark-horse diamond with Altamont Diary, their compelling, sinister concept album inspired by The Stones' dread day of '69. Their second sticks to no strict storyline but advances their mix of psyched-out 60s guitars/sitars and late 70s Teutonic rhythms to heart-stopping effect. It's accumulatively epic: it begins as a fine Spacemen 3/Neu pastiche, but by the roaring climax its pulse-rockets are firing way beyond genre. As a finale Sam Cutler, M.C. at Altamont and Stones/Grateful Dead manager, drawls a languidly poetic memoir over "Valiant", while guitars mentally creep. Utterly riveting." (CR)

Book Of Lists
S-T
PS, US They inhabit a Vancouver far removed from the brittle glass houses & overpriced condominiums that currently choke this western town. A coastal band, in-touch w/ nature, but equally in-tune w/ the raw street beat. With a love of the classic UK landmarks of the past 40 yrs, along w/ their own interminable twang, it's safe to say that the always evolving holy racket conjured is pure sound + vision.

PS, CANADA First in a series of "Broken Social Scene Presents" albums. This solo effort from Kevin Drew unfolds like an emotional comic book. Drew's songwriting addresses all his favourite topics: fucking, fighting, fearing and hope. Both Drew and Brendan Canning, the two co-founders of Broken Social Scene, decided to approach making records as solo projects. In the process, the social scene community participated, playing key supporting roles, returning to the creative process that was the initial spark for BSS and giving birth to this new series. Cloudland Canyon
Silver Tongued Sisyphus
PS, US Recorded in Brooklyn, Germany & Memphis & follows on the heels of the well received "Requiems Der Natur 2002-04" album released on the Tee Pee label. A secular call to prayer w/ humming, looping & loping ambient passages interspersed w/ bursting rhythmic energy & agitated guitar lines. Recent live shows have sounded like an unauthorized soundtrack to netherworld versions of The Swimmer or The Scorceror. Pulling influences from the foggy ether of generations past, this has staked it's claim to the shadows of cult musical culture of the late 1960's and early 1970's German underground scene.

Cranes
Wings Of Joy
PS, UK The first reissue of this seminal debut album since it's original release in 1991 by Portsmouth's most important band, Cranes. The album features 7 bonus tracks that accompanied the original release, 4 of which were on a limited edition CD and 3 that were available only as a limited edition 12" with the vinyl version. These are now all gathered together for the first time. The CD booklet includes the band's UK Discography from their most productive period when signed to the Dedicated label. The artwork features the original sleeve and new liner notes telling the story of the band's creation, to signing their deal with Dedicated and includes excerpts of the original press reviews of the album from the NME and Melody Maker. Cranes remain a unique band in the modern history of the UK's serious music scene. They were an antidote to bland, contrived acts that peppered the charts at the time. Their experimental approach to making music still has a lasting credibility today.

Cranes

The CD features 7 bonus tracks bringing together for the first time, all the tracks from all the various limited edition versions of the original release. Also included is The Cure front man Robert Smith's remix of the single 'Jewel' which is taken from the album "Jewel". The band's full UK Dedicated Records discography is included featuring many of the band's rare sleeves and extensive liner notes. The artwork features the brilliant original sleeve design but has been expanded to incorporate all the new elements to the CD booklet.

Crescent
Little Waves
PS, UK New album from veteran British psych-folk-ambienteers. Following a four-year-long absence since their 'By The Roads and The Fields' album, Bristol-based Crescent return with their fifth LP. Slowly given form over the past few years, 'Little Waves' is a quiet, eccentric, and charmingly rough-edged record, influenced by 1960's psych and folk, and by 1930's gramophone records. A set of largely acoustic songwriting and improvisations for guitar, worn-out voice, horns, organ, (home-made) double bass, and drums, it was recorded at home, in a cinema, and in a forest, and recalls the likes of Galaxie 500, Maher Shalal Hash Baz, Bill Wells, and The Pastels.

Dead Or Alive
Sophisticated Boom Boom
PS, UK "Sophisticated Boom Boom" was the debut album from UK synth pop/new wave act Dead Or Alive, released in 1984. Fronted by the imposing figure of Pete Burns, latterly a fixture on UK television -not least through his appearance on Celebrity Big Brother - it gave the band its first UK Top 40 single, with a re-make of KC & The Sunshine Band's 'That's The Way I Like It'. That single, as well as 'Misty Circles', were also hits on the US Hot Dance and Club Play charts - when the latter was reissued as the b-side to 'You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)'. 'Misty Circles' and further single 'What I Want' were cowritten by later Sisters Of Mercy and Mission guitarist Wayne Hussey, but it was Burns' confrontational press image that generated column inches. Dead Or Alive were embraced by the New Romantics as well as clubbers, and Burns engaged in a series of entertaining press spats with Boy George about who minted that image of extravagant gay frontman, outrageous dresser first. This re-release, on CD for the first time in the UK, includes a slew of bonus tracks as well as detailed liners notes about the band's history.

Dell'orso, Edda
Voice
PS, UK Edda Dell'Orso is the sound of Italian cinema. Her astonishing voice recognizable to anyone who has experienced the landmark spaghetti western films made by Sergio Leone; films that were in the mid sixties scored by a young whippersnapper called Ennio Morricone. The recent revival of interest in mid-century post-modern art and the restoration of so many wonderful Morricone scores has led many to discover Edda Dell'Orso. Her work is the epitome of intelligence and sophistication. It is utopian in its scope and its potential is vast. Fall, The
Live at the Knitting Factory
PS, US AMG: "Recorded during the Fall's visit to Los Angeles in 2001, this remarkable album captures a remarkably unstable live show, largely peopled by recent material -- but none the worse for any of that. Most of the terms that are traditionally applied to a Fall live show are applicable here, from raucous and rambunctious, to seething and snarling. What renders this set so valuable, however, is Smith's refusal to acknowledge anything remotely approaching a comfort zone, neither for himself nor for his audience, and this set expertly captures the ensuing dislocation..."

Field, Kyle
Put it in a Nutshell
PS, GERMANY Keywords: 40 Drawings by Little Wings' singer Kyle Field. "Put it in a Nutshell" is the first book release by Kyle Field and allows a good insight into his graphical work. The drawings include utterly detailed surrealistic objects, colored patchwork-like patterns, Japanese looking portraits and sketch-like images. The wide range of material combines serious and light-hearted, simple and complex approaches. The works have been shown in several exhibitions worldwide and are mostly curtsey of Atelier Cardenas Bellanger in Paris. Kyle Field is the singer of the wonderful band Little Wings. An album will be released shortly after the book on Ahornfelder. The book has 40 pages, a thick cardboard cover and a glued binding.

Fisher, Jeremy
Goodbye Blue Monday
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Jeremy Fisher ignited a massive amount of interest with his home-made YouTube video for "Cigarette," a folksy, laid-back, self-deprecating number whose singalong chorus, "I'll be your cigarette/Good or bad, I'm just your habit," resonated with anyone ever caught in a less than reciprocal relationship... Echoes of Simon & Garfunkel and Bob Dylan can be heard within as well. Even better comparisons would focus on Fisher's Everly Brothers-like ear for a memorable hook and his Buddy Holly-esque enthusiasm for infectious choruses... Twinned with superb acoustic guitar, stellar drumming, sensational melodies, and grand hooks, Fisher should be waving goodbye to his blues for good."

Fog
Ditherer
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Fog started out as the project name of Andrew Broder, part of the continuum of bedroom-ensconced D.I.Y. savants making dense, loopy albums with a variety of electronic instruments. But in the course of the intervening half-decade, Broder has slowly introduced more traditional instruments into his previously sample-based work, and after several albums balanced awkwardly between electronica, turntablism (among his other affiliations, Broder is sort of an adjunct member of the Anticon stable of underground hip-hoppers) and psychedelia, Fog is now a full-on, old-fashioned indie rock trio...a sort of summation of everything Fog has been in the past, thereby clearing the decks for the trio's future... Guests Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker of Low, similarly eclectic multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bird and Anticon's Why? contribute to the album's general anything-goes sense, but the remarkable aspect of Ditherer is that all of this seemingly impenetrable mass of ideas has been streamlined into 11 relatively concise and surprisingly accessible pop songs. In many ways, it's like an Upper Midwest version of Badly Drawn Boy's similarly polyglot aesthetic." (Stewart Mason)

For Against
In The Marshes
PS, US Signposts: New Order, Durutti Column, Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil. IN THE MARSHES is Minneapolis record label WORDS ON MUSIC's third in a series of album reissues by Lincoln, Nebraska's post-punk pioneers FOR AGAINST. The record represents the darkest and most experimental period in FOR AGAINST's nearly 25-year history. Primarily recorded on 4-track in 1986 during a break from the recording sessions of their debut album ECHELONS, six songs were eventually culled together to comprise the EP later released by Independent Project Records in 1990 for their 10" Archive series. Two exclusive bonus tracks are included on this CD reissue. IN THE MARSHES is reissued in a six-panel digipack designed by two-time Grammy nominee BRUCE LICHER (SCENIC, SAVAGE REPUBLIC).

Four Freshman
Graduation Day
PS, UK Believed to be one of the greatest vocal groups of all time; one whose influence on both contemporary jazz and rock is impossible to overestimate. The recordings on this very collection established their unique style of harmonizing. Harris, Calvin
I Created Disco
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Scottish remixer, songwriter, former bedroom artist, MySpace star, and finally major-label recording artist on EMI, Calvin Harris released his debut album of electronic dance music with snatches of the Human League, or maybe more accurately the League Unlimited Orchestra, in the summer of 2007, including two Top Ten singles, "Acceptable in the 80s" and "The Girls." The former track is a slice of tongue-in-cheek disco-pop for all those born in the decade after dance music took over the world, and the latter extols the virtues of all types of girls (even those carrying a little bitty extra weight), with political correctness abounding as he name-checks that he likes black, white, Asian, and mixed-race girls along with at least half a dozen different nationalities..." Hooker, William, Bill Horist and Evyind Kang
This Season's Fire
PS, US This all-star trio features William Hooker on drums, Eyvind Kang on violin and guitar and Bill Horist on guitar. Sync'd up like they've been playing together for eternity these recordings represent a dramatic paradigm shift in the art of improvisation. These three thoroughly modern artists scan jazz, new music and noise - stretching it all out and putting it back together within the expansive boundaries of these tremendously compelling high energy recordings. William Hooker has performed as a leader of many ensembles of improvised and new music. Accompanying musicians have included: Billy Bang, Thurston Moore, David Murray, David S. Ware, William Parker, Melvin Gibbs, Donald Miller, DJ Olive, Elliot Sharpe, Malachi Thompson, Zeena Parkins, Lee Ranaldo, DJ Spooky, Rob Brown, Roy Campbell, Mark Hennen, Steven Bernstein, Roy Nathanson, Jason Hwang, Glenn Spearman, Joseph Celli, Ellen Christi and many more Eyvind Kang's introduction seems to have come when he was still a student at Cornish College. At this time he traveled to NYC to perform and tour with Zorn's Cobra game piece. Kang has since recorded and toured with John Zorn, Mr. Bungle, Secret Chiefs, Bill Frissel, Sun City Girls, Arto Lindsay, Wayne Horvitz & many more. Bill Horist has played or recorded with members of Larsen, Earth and The Boredoms as well as Bill Frisell,Wayne Horvitz, KK Null, Matt Chamberlain, Trey Gunn, Chris Cutler, Kawabata Makoto, Trey Spruance, Eugene Chadbourne, TatsuyaYoshida, Shazaad Ismaily, Climax Golden Twins, Haco, Illusion of Safety, Saadet Tuerkoez, Planktonman, Jack Wright, Steve Fisk, Anla Courtis (Reynols) and many more.

Kent, Julia
Delay
PS, US Julia Kent left Rasputina in 1999, after releasing two albums on Columbia Records, and shortly thereafter became a member of Antony and the Johnsons. She played on and contributed string arrangements to the group's Mercury Prize-winning record I Am a Bird Now, and, as a Johnson, has toured Europe, North America, and Australia; played at Carnegie Hall and the Royal Albert Hall; and appeared on numerous television shows, including the Late Show with David Letterman, Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, and the BBC's Newsnight. In addition to her ongoing participation in Antony and the Johnsons, she also has performed and/or recorded with many other artists and ensembles, including the Angels of Light, Burnt Sugar, Larsen, Angela McCluskey, Leona Naess, Teddy Thompson, Devendra Banhart, Mi and L'au, and Rufus Wainwright. Her debut solo effort, Delay, is a CD of multi-tracked cello and found sounds. The CD was inspired by airports, by transitoriness, and by the private emotional worlds that we create amid the disorientations and disjunctions of travel. Delay was recorded over the course of a year (or so) at home in between touring and traveling. After so many years of playing with other people Julia felt that it was time to do something entirely on her own. As a result she is the sole composer/performer on all tracks. The title refers to both the effect, to traveling and to the fact that it took so long to record. It is also homage to Arthur Russell's World Of Echo - a masterpiece of (among other things) externalizing the intimate.

Moore, Thurston
Trees Outside the Academy
PS, US It's Thurston's first solo outing since 1995's Psychic Hearts. Of course, Thurston's been releasing records here, there and everywhere mostly in the context of rowdy and rambunctious noise/improv escapades but this new one is killer diller SONGS! Unlike Psychic Hearts' skeletal trio rock, this new jammer, 12 years post, has a far fuller bouquet of sonic depth and proves this Sonic dude to have a very real songwriting life outside of the legendary Sonic Youth (of which he is a founding figure, duh). This newborn disc is 12 songs long. Thurston recorded primarily on acoustic guitar and bass, laying down the core of the tunes with drummer compatriot Sonic Youth's Steve Shelly and violinist Samara Lubelski, a noted player from MV/EE and The Golden Road, Hall of Fame and other awesome gatherings as well as solo artiste.

New Buffalo
Somewhere, Anywhere
PS, US More than two years since the release of her much loved debut album, 'The Last Beautiful Day', Sally Seltmann, AKA New Buffalo, returns with her stunning second album 'Somewhere, Anywhere'. Seltmann is a soft-spoken songstress from Melbourne. Her last album was named one of the Top 50 Albums of 2004 by Rolling Stone. She also penned the song "1234", the debut single on Feist's new album, 'The Reminder'. For the recording of 'Somewhere, Anywhere', she moved to a sleepy, coastal town near the Great Ocean Road, and decided once again to record and produce the album herself. The songs were written on a Thurmer piano that's been in the Seltmann family for over 100 years. PRESSPLAYRECORD: "Sally Seltmann sings as if a heartbreak will simply destroy her, yet she sounds as if she's callous and numb to yet another heartache. It's a strange dichotomy, true, but it works. Unlike her debut album, Somewhere, Anywhere is stripped-down, vulnerable, and ultimately a moving and emotional work. The album's standout track, "It's True," feels like an answer to the Beatles' "She's Leaving Home," and is a painfully beautiful--if not ultimately enlightening--ballad of empowerment."

Radio Massacre International
Rain Falls in Grey
PS, US British trio of Steve Dinsdale (Keybs, electronics, drums) Duncan Goddard (keyboards, electronics, bass) and Gary Houghton (guitar, keys). These three musicians have worked together in various configurations since the early 1980s and formed R.M.I. in 1993. They released their first album in 1995 and since that time have released over 25 albums on small English labels since that time while Cuneiform released their album "Emissaries" to much acclaim in 2005. Best known for electronic space music for keyboards, electronics and guitars, here RMI have expanded greatly upon their usual sound and also use conventional rock instrumentation to create a sincere and moving tribute to Syd Barrett, and in doing so, manage to capture some of the psychedelic magic of 1967-68. Features a really striking cover by Daevid Allen, which is also a hommage to Syd. Sky City
S-T
PS, US Sky City features Tom Carter (Charalambides), Robert Horton, Lisa Cameron & Lee Ann Cameron. Lisa Cameron is a drummer and percussionist from Austin, Texas, whom Tom Carter has played with in the past. Lisa creates exquisite noise by vibrating snares and cymbals with feedback. When she heard Tom Carter and Robert Horton's Lunar Eclipse, she wanted to record with them. Lisa and vocalist Lee Ann Cameron drove from Austin to the Bay Area and a session was planned. In the meantime, Tom was journeying in New Mexico and drove by a road sign to Sky City, so he had found the name for the new group. The day of the session, Lisa and Lee Ann drove from San Francisco, picked up Tom in Oakland and arrived at the studio on the hill. Lisa had somehow left her equipment in SF. As they drove up, I heard Tom say, "That's so Texas." Then the magic started. Lisa asked, "Do you have a cymbal?" "Yes" "An extra contact microphone?" "Yes." "A snare?" "Yes." Some strips of metal?" "Yes." Then we walked over the abyss together into Sky City. Sky City is psychedelic space music with all the atoms of surfaces freed to inter and counter react. Noise in the outer dimension. Horton's homemade inventions, Carter's lyrical ebow guitar lines. The walking on the moon vocals of Lee Ann Cameron. The vibration of material planes by Lisa Cameron. The broken blues of the boot (Horton's oldest instrument 4 strings on a piece of wood the shape of Italy). Sun Ra ark and Neil Young's arc put through a digital blender and reconstituted for space travel. The magical musical thing (MMT) a toy synthesizer from the 70"s. A great drawing on the inside cover by Natacha Robinson. A chance for music induced time travel to parallel worlds and an opportunity to receive a collect call for the future from Sky City.

Songs of Green Pheasant
Gyllyng Street
PS, US Coming exactly two years after the release of an eponymous debut album, the gorgeous 'Gyllyng Street' is the third release by Songs Of Green Pheasant. Marking a departure from the beautiful 4-track folk-haze of the debut album, 'Gyllyng Street' is Songs Of Green Pheasant's most adventurous and accomplished work to date, and sees the artist take a big step forwards whilst retaining the isolated individuality that marks them out as a truly unique voice in the contemporary out-folk / post-rock / etc. milieu. Retaining something of the cloudy, dreamlike and intimate cocooning space of its predecessor, 'Gyllyng Street' moves further away from folk song-form towards a richly atmospheric and ambitious modus, heavily tinged with the influence of early '90s indie. The means of production remain modest, but the thinking is widescreen.

Strings of Consciousness
Our Moon Is Full
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "In experimental circles, electronica-related and otherwise, the mid-2000s marked a slight return to the song format. Call it the logical extension of the underground folk revival or more simply a desire to apply experimental findings to genres of wider appeal, the fact remains that noisy textures, electronic constructs, and post-rock anthems permeated into the song realm, to a point where some reviewers started writing about "electro-acoustic pop." Strings of Consciousness' debut full-length marvelously illustrates how artistically successful this approach can be... The group's lineup features seasoned experimentalists Hervé Vincenti, Stefano Tedesco, and Philippe Petit, Spaceheads/Pere Ubu's Andy Diagram, the Sea and Cake's Alison Chesley -- and that's only part of the group's core. Also present are the guest vocalists: Foetus' J.G. Thirlwell, Girls Against Boys' Scott McCloud, and the almighty Barry Adamson, again just to name a few. The music does not blend only sound sources (acoustic/electronic), but genres, too: folk, industrial (the Current 93-tinged "Crystallize It"), even Western in "In Between," featuring a captivating recitation by Pete Simonelli... "Cleanliness Is Next to Godliness," featuring Oxbow's Eugene Robinson, and "While the Sun Burns Out Another Sun," with the post-beat poetry of Black Sifichi... Its beauties are so numerous and subtle that they take time to unfold. A serious contender for year-end lists across the board." (François Couture)

Susanna
Sonata Mix Dwarf Cosmos
PS, NORWAY This is the debut solo album from Norway's Susanna Karolina Wallumrød, who is most known for two sublime albums and a number of quietly powerful concerts with Susanna and the Magical Orchestra, a duo which includes member Morten Qvenild (Jaga Jazzist, Shining, In The Country). This time she is simply "Susanna," and she has written twelve highly personal songs that make up this beautiful and quite extraordinary album. She plays piano and guitar and guests include brother and ECM recording artist Christian Wallumrød (piano), Magical Orchestra partner Morten Qvenild (piano, synth), Big Bang leader Øystein Greni (guitar), The White Birch leader Ola Fløttum (guitar), In The Country drummer Pål Hausken, Helge Sten (guitar, mellotron) and Giovanna Pessi (harp). As Rune Grammofon label head Rune Kristoffersen makes clear: "In these fast and restless times of instant entertainment and shortways to possible success, it's a rare treat to witness a young and genuinely talented singer and writer that operates to such a degree outside trends and fashions. Much in the same way as a young Tim Buckley, Nico or Scott Walker without making too much of those comparisons. We are delighted with this lovely addition to the catalog, a work of uncompromising dedication inviting us to reflect and to listen." Sonata Mix Dwarf Cosmos is produced by Deathprod (Helge Sten).

Slider [deluxe, expanded]
PS, US The original, classic 'Slider' album remastered along with a bonus disc of demos and outtakes entitled 'Rabbit Fighter: The Alternate Slider'. Yum! ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Buoyed by two U.K. number one singles in "Telegram Sam" and "Metal Guru," The Slider became T. Rex's most popular record on both sides of the Atlantic, despite the fact that it produced no hits in the U.S. The Slider essentially replicates all the virtues of Electric Warrior, crammed with effortless hooks and trashy fun. All of Bolan's signatures are here -- mystical folk-tinged ballads, overt sexual come-ons crooned over sleazy, bopping boogies, loopy nonsense poetry, and a mastery of the three-minute pop song form. The main difference is that the trippy mix of Electric Warrior is replaced by a fuller, more immediate-sounding production. Bolan's guitar has a harder bite, the backing choruses are more up-front, and the arrangements are thicker-sounding, even introducing a string section on some cuts (both ballads and rockers). Even with the beefier production, T. Rex still doesn't sound nearly as heavy as many of the bands it influenced (and even a few of its glam contemporaries), but that's partly intentional -- Bolan's love of a good groove takes precedence over fast tempos or high-volume crunch... It's nearly impossible not to get caught up in the irresistible rush of melodies and cheery good times. Even if it treads largely the same ground as Electric Warrior, The Slider is flawlessly executed, and every bit the classic that its predecessor is." (Steve Huey)

Time of Orchids
Namesake Caution
PS, US Formed in the summer of 1999, NYCs Time of Orchids possesses a unique and jarring slant-a wedding of staggered, progressive angularity, dark musical imagery and a sweeping, seductive beauty, informed as much by 1960s Italian film scores as by modern rock, with rich, Beach Boys-like, dream-pop vocal harmonies! Their fifth album, boasts layer upon layer of rich, orchestrated vocals, lavish guitar antics and eerie, otherworldly keyboard textures, draped voyeuristically atop a complex rhythm section. Songs writhe and intersect, taking on the form of anthems one moment and desperate plodding dirges the next. Wooden Shjips
S-T
PS, US Debut album? Might come with a bonus CD including all of the group's early vinyl-only releases including a previously unreleased unedited eight minute version of "Dance, California"? It might! Wooden Shjips, a quartet from San Francisco heavily influenced by the experimentalism of psychedelia, classical minimalism, and garage rock excess, started as an experiment in rhythmic primitivism and group improvisation... The band released two acclaimed records in 2006, beginning early in the year with a self-released 10-inch, Shrinking Moon for You and a 7-inch on the Sick Thirst label, and received praise from veteran scribe David Fricke in Rolling Stone: ""Wooden Shjips are from San Francisco, but the concentrated ferocity of the freakouts on their two very-underground releases--a white-label ten-inch EP (the band gave away the first 300 copies) and a clear-vinyl single ("Dance, California")--arrives via the '70s Germanic-guitar lunacy of Guru Guru and the confrontational repetition of VU."

A Taste Of Ra
Morning of My Life (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 23RD)
PS, SWEDEN This is the third and final album in the A Taste of Ra trilogy. Nicolai Dunger, and the cloak of mystery behind the Taste of Ra project has captivated many with its various incarnations of free-folk meanderings, Tim Buckley jazz-howl and Swedish pastoral indie-hum. Dunger describes Morning of My Life as follows: "When we moved to the tent and the light was golden and we were young, and the magazine was all there was to bring, and you woke in the night when the birds were singing just for you and the smell of soil and the warm breath over through you, ohh it moved you. All there was to it, was the morning of my life." He also describes that the overall idea behind the first two A Taste of Ra records was for pure vocal and instrumental experimentation -- using recording techniques on a more personal level. On this final record in the trilogy, he takes a different approach, starting off with one song that he developed together with Swedish musician, songwriter and producer, Jari Haapalainen. The song naturally broke up into six movements, creating a film-like, dramatic pattern, and Johan Berthling made some beautiful arrangements for three of the movements. Starsailor-esque vocals, jazzy horns and loose, clattering drums mix with piano, harp and guitar arpeggios -- just as much of an Impressionistic song cycle as Van Morrison's Astral Weeks.

All Sides
Dedalus (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 16th)
PS, UK Following two EPs on Make Mine Music and Chat Blanc Records, and a collaborative album with Troum on Old Europa Café, "Dedalus" is the first full-length album from Nina Kernicke aka All Sides. Drawing influence from the likes of Slowdive, Radiohead, Scorn, Meat Beat Manifesto and Mark Hollis, to name but a few. Nina's music has been greeted with praise from many quarters, including Boomkat who noted that the music of All Sides successfully merged many styles into a "euphoric" blend. "Dedalus" is partly an expression and reflection of Nina's personal experiences, but it was also inspired by recording the album "Shutun" and touring Poland, Finland, Canada and USA with Troum, an experimental, drone outfit based in Nina's hometown of Bremen, Germany. The album's title is, in part, a reference to the character Stephen Dedalus in the James Joyce's classic novel Ulysses. The title track gives a clearer indication about the context, in its use of a sample from a cinematic version of the novel, in which Dedalus walks along a beach, looking out to sea, becoming aware of his loneliness. Simultaneously, the title refers to the character from Greek mythology whose son Icarus dies during their escape from Crete - Dedalus and Icarus build wings out of feathers and wax and, in spite of warnings, Icarus flies too high and too close to the sun, melting the wax and plunging him into the sea. References to both of these can be found throughout the album, but they are as much metaphors for Nina's personal experiences as they are literary references. The CD comes housed in luxurious cardboard and felt packaging, limited to 500 copies.

Ana D
Satélite 99 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 16th)
PS, SPAIN In October it will be ten years since we released one of the most unique records that have ever been done in Spain and, we dare say, elsewhere. Ana D has become since then a legendary name to whisper to each other's ears, and we want to celebrate the tenth anniversary of her only official album as it deserves: with a full re-release that rises to its condition of lost classic album, joining an extra bonus album that enhances even more the new release. Today, "Satélite 99" sounds as fascinatingly weird and beautiful as it did the first day. As if a more sophisticated Martin Rev collaborated with a tattooed, black-haired Nancy Sinatra, or with a mysteriously distant Astrud Gilberto, on this album Ana D and her companions, producers and arrangers (Ibon Errazkin and Javier Corcobado) used vintage instruments and forgotten beat boxes to create their own kind of "acoustic synth-pop", with references that ranged from Kur Weill and Serge Gainsbourg to SUICIDE themselves.

Apenino
Un Rayo De Sol (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 18TH)
PS, SPAIN Before us lies a ray of light that illuminates all his previous work and does Marco A. Maril (former Dar Ful Ful and factotum of Apenino) justice in the form of 10 brand new songs which come off with an explosive palette of sounds that even the conclusive final track can barely contain. As in previous efforts, "Un rayo de sol" was recorded at home and in Arturo Vaquero's Abrigueiro studio, and the result is a really special record, which becomes almost indispensable at first listen. The songs lead us into a mysterious world, close but inaccessible. In a way, it's a magical dimension of reality that we can only thoroughly share with the author while the music is playing: electro-acoustic pop (lead mainly by ukuleles and mandolin), woven on a subtle electronic base that incorporates a wide range of arrangements, from the most modest noise to the most spectacular strings section. Some clues for first-comers: Apenino's sound might be associated to artists such as Múm, East River Pipe, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, Khonnor, Patrick Wolf or even Ana D, to name but a (very idiosyncratic) few.

As an emblem of Alexis' commitment to "natural electronic music" (bridging the natural and electronic worlds), nearly all of In Light was recorded live. Very few loops were used - in fact, only one. This gesture was meant to bring back some of the rough (re: natural) edges that have been lost in so much "Electronic Music" today. In Light is a luminous album of warm, pulsing music.

Askew, Ed
Little Eyes (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 9TH)
PS, US Recorded in one continuous take in NYC, 1970. Made with little more than magnetic tape, Ed's voice, and the stunningly modern arrangements of his beloved Martin Tiple, "Little Eyes" is as grand, sad, and beautiful a statement as can be expressed. His off-key lilt hangs like a seductive pink mist, and settles deeply; you'll hear these songs long after they're over. Attempting to publicize an unreleased record, Ed did a string of radio gigs between NY and New Haven, and the best of them are collected here. Lovely and wild.

Banhart, Devendra
Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 25TH)
PS, US Recorded in Topanga Canyon in the Santa Monica mountains. Neil Young lived there while recording "After The Gold Rush" and the area has also been home to Emmylou Harris, Taj Mahal, Joni Mitchell, Mick Fleetwood, and members of The Doors. Those ghosts inhabit the sound and vibe of these recording sessions. Banhart's whole "freak folk" tag is gone, replaced with this classic, gorgeous rock album. Some songs are fragile and solipsistic, others have a pronounced tropicalia influence, and still others are wildly electric and epic.

Bevel
Phoenician Terrane (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 9TH)
PS, US Phoenician Terrane, BEVEL's first release for Contraphonic, is a record of densely orchestrated American wonder. This is the Great American Songbook as discovered by the descendants of Harry Partch and Charles Ives upon a rock in the sand. As a whole, Phoenician Terrane evolves over a cinematic arc, leading the listener across pages of a sonic story, a historical journey parlayed through a personal lens. Languidly plucked guitar lines pave trails amongst violin and flute embellishments, transient Gypsy-laden tones swash about warm synthesizers, with everything cast in a soft, psychedelic haze. Further buttressed by Nuon's haunted vocal delivery, the songs create a tapestry of tales related in the realm of the surreal. Assembled with a cast of contributors featuring members of Califone, Boxhead Ensemble, and Manishevitz, among others, Phoenician Terrane is BEVEL's finest work to date.

Blind Willie Johnson
Nobody's Fault But Mine (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 25TH)
PS, UK "Blind" Willie Johnson straddled that spooky border between blues and spirituals. Among musicians, he is considered one of the greatest slide or bottleneck guitarists, as well as one of the most revered figures of depression-era gospel music. Covered by everyone from Peter, Paul and Mary to Led Zeppelin to Fairport Convention to Bob Dylan to Beck to The White Stripes, he is one of those almost secret figures who seemingly influence everything. Ry Coooder's soundtrack to "Paris, Texas" was conceived as a distillation of his work and spirit. Willie Johnson's life in itself reads like an early blues, blinded at age seven by his own mother in a fight with his errant father, living as an itinerant preacher and singer, having to live in the burnt out ruin of his ramshackle house after a fire, on a wet mattress, which eventually helped kill him, pneumonia, malarial fever and syphilis being a powerful combo. A major figure in the "eerie voiced" blues genre typified by Robert Johnson, Skip James and others, that sense-of dread hellhound on my trail atmosphere which makes great movies...Here is a collection of Blind Willie Johnson's finest, with his slashing 12 string and scary slide all over them...Blind Willie's song Dark Was The Night, Cold Was the Ground was included on the Voyager Golden Record, sent into space with the Voyager spacecraft in 1977. Out there, there may be life forms hearing the sounds of Blind Willie Johnson. Are you ready for it? A rich, strange, and wonderful collection of Blind Willie Johnson's best! Lovingly packaged with wonderful memorabilia and detailed notes by our man in the world of I Am A Fugitive From A Chain Gang, Mr. Vic Templar! Beautifully remastered in RevOla-sonic sound by Joe Foster and Norman Blake at the secretly located Studio 3! A must for ANYONE who likes the magical, eerie and scary sound of all the people mentioned above..."adapted" by Led Zep, launched into space, covered by The White Stripes...surely you have to check out Willie's scary world of black cat bones and revelators and cold, cold graves!

David Thomas Broughton vs. 7 Herz (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 2nd)

Bryars, Gavin
Hommages (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 13TH)
PS, UK Remastered. Originally released in November 1981 on Les Disques du Crepuscule, Hommages was recorded in Leicester in February 1981 and produced by noted Belgian new music composer Wim Mertens. The album was conceived as a series of diverse homage's to other composers, which include Bill Evans (My First Homage), Ferruccio Busoni and Gustav Holst (The English Mail-Coach and The Vespertine Park) and Percy Grainger (Hi-Tremolo). Featured musicians included Andrew Bilham, Ronald Reah, Andrew Renshaw, Nigel Shipway, Dave Smith, John White and Marie Wilson, as well as Gavin Bryars himself on piano and vibraphone. The album is the only one that documents the important period between Bryars' early experimental music and later works from Medea onwards, as well as his enthusiasm for small composer/performer ensembles. The new 63 minute digital remaster of Hommages now includes two bonus tracks composed and recorded by Bryars during the same period: Danse Dieppoise, and the lengthy piano piece Out of Zaleski's Gazebo. The booklet features extensive notes by Gavin Bryars on the origin and performance of all six pieces, and preserves the original album cover artwork by Marc Borgers.

Cake, The
Cream Of The Cake (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 25TH)
PS, UK What links New Orleans Maestro Harold Battiste, Dr. John, The Soft Machine, The Daily Flash, Tiny Tim, Jack Nitsche, Sonny and Cher, Traffic, Jimi Hendrix and Ginger Baker's Airforce? THE CAKE. The last of the classic girl groups, whose two 1967/68 albums are as they say a game of two (sometimes three!) halves, classic girlgroupisms mixed with Baroque Pop, Wyrd Folk, Psychpop and club R&B, all with a wonderful good humour. Fans of the esoteric might care to know that Kevin Ayers' song "Eleanor's Cake Which Ate Her" is about the group...that they sang backing vocals on Electric Ladyland and the first Soft Machine album...and that Eleanor herself sang 'I Got You Babe' with Tiny Tim (backed by The Band) in the cult movie "You Are What You Eat". And are the albums any good? Yes, by yiminy, they are! A wonderful snapshot of the Sunset Strip, with a wonderfully decadent atmosphere for three such innocent girls...you'll just love it! The Cake recently reformed to play the prestigious launch party for the forthcoming Jimi Hendrix biopic, and who knows - they may come to your town soon... At great personal cost, RevOla presents THE CAKE! Never previously on CD cult artists...and they look hot in pictures too! Wonderfully re-mastered by Mr. Nick Robbins and with gorgeous packaging featuring wonderful pictures provided by THE CAKE and legendary rock photographer Ed Caraeff (The Cake took the shy young Ed to Monterey, where he took his first famous photos of Jimi Hendrix). There's also more than extensive liner notes by Tiny Tim biographer Chris Campion...at last, the full story can be told! Interviews with Harold Battiste, Kim Fowley, Rodney Bingenheimer, Kevin Ayers, you name them, they are here! A must for all girl group and Northern Soul fans, lovers of Baroque Pop, Psychpop and Wyrd Folk...you know the drill!

Club 8
The Boy Who Couldn't Stop Dreaming (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 2ND)
PS, SWEDEN Club 8 is finally back with their long awaited sixth album. "The boy who couldn't stop dreaming" is everything we'd ever hoped it would be - it's pop music at it's most profound, balancing perfectly between sunshine and melancholia. Twelve songs that'll make you sing along about death while dreaming of summer days. A glorious return to say the least. After having released three albums in just over two years time, very few expected they'd have to wait over four years for a new Club 8 album. Some even started to assume the band had split up. In May 2007 the band returned with the amazing Tropicalia-influenced "Whatever you want" which rapidly became a huge blog hit - top 10 most blogged songs according to music blog aggregator Elbo.ws The waiting's been so long we can almost, but just almost, talk about a comeback album. However, waiting's not always a bad thing. Not only has songwriter Johan Angergård released three albums with The Legends and one with Acid House Kings in the time in between - Club 8 has evolved in to one of the most personal and emotional bands around today. Not that previous albums have lacked emotional depth, that's far from the truth, but "The boy who couldn't stop dreaming" is truly different and a very very special album. The fleeting of life and time, and the nearness of death arrives in the shape of twelve perfect pop songs in a summer dress. It's mix of sunshine and melancholia is just as unique as it's profoundly moving.

Comaneci
Volcano (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 11TH)
PS, ITALY At the 1976 Olympics a young girl made history. With cat-like grace and a framework like a butterfly, she enchanted the public, floating between the parallels, becoming the first gymnast ever to score a perfect 10. In 2003 a three-piece outfit from Ravenna, Italy chose the last name of Nadia Comaneci for their minute but strong music project. With an ethereal and visceral voice this emotional trio is secretive but surprisingly explosive. Comaneci makes quiet but evocative music. They know how to make noise without pumping up the volume. Their acoustic chamber-pop is intimate, soothing and involving. Francesca Amati's dreamlike voice is peculiar in an already peculiar band. After two self-produced EPs, and collaboration with director Stefano Mordini for the soundtrack of his film "Provincia Meccanica" (EMI Records), and also presented at the Berlin Film Festival, the Disasters By Choice label presents Comaneci's first full-length recording named Volcano. Through twelve tracks the record synthesizes the essence of the band. Francesca's voice is perfectly supported by the soft and effective chords of Andrea Carella's guitar and by Jenny Burnazzi's emotive cello. Advised for those who still feel for simple song.

Davis, Ben Forrest
Roughs (ON SALE / PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 2007)
PS, US Re-release of 'Roughs' (on Velvet Crusher Ric Menck's Bird Song label) by former and founding member of the Los Angeles rock band Sugarcult. Here, Ben's doing his very own laid-back soft-rock thing, with a little dab of country & western, quite a departure from Sugarcult's highly-toughted tautness. Leaving behind a life of rock-n-roll excess, this enigmatic album qualifies as emancipation and exorcism, a collection of intimate, personal songs about love and self-destruction. Not so far afield from singer-songwriterly, orch-popping Parasol faves like Ken Stringfellow and his Posies, Kevin Tihista and his Red Terror, Jack Logan & Bob Kimbell, June & The Exit Wounds, and The Velvet Crush.

Demons
Evocation (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 2nd)
PS, US Consisting of Nate Young (of Wolf Eyes) and Steve Kenney, Demons explore near-epileptic fits of droning analog synth textures that elicit comfortable remembrances of electronic-obsessed forefathers like Stockhausen and Cluster whilst simultaneously bludgeoning forward with the grating and scraping atonal complexities of Whitehouse and Throbbing Gristle. Having already rallied a feverous flux of supporters with intense psychedelic multi-media performances and a slew of cryptic releases, among them this year's fetishistic Life Destroyer box set, Evocation is an appropriately elaborate and accomplished approximation of their shrewd identity. Evocation is Demons first official CD, with artwork contributed by the duo's frequent visual collaborator Alivia Zivich.

Digital Dance
Treatment (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 6TH)
PS, UK 16 tracks. The definitive anthology by cult Belgian post-punk band Digital Dance, a group often name-checked but seldom heard. One of the first and best new wave bands in Belgium, Digital Dance formed in Brussels in July 1978 by singer/guitarist Jerry WX and guitarist Stephan Barbery. The group, which also included keyboard player Jean-Marc Lederman, released their first single on Disques Vogue in late 1979. Digital dance recorded four singles - Radio-Activity, Faulty, Treatment and Three Meanings - as well as a self-titled cassette album, and another single under the name Jung. Although John Peel championed Faulty in the UK, and the band played several high profile live shows (including a residency at the Gibus Club in Paris and a support slot with Joy Division at Plan K in January 1980), Digital Dance failed to break through and split early in 1982. Various members subsequently played in groups as diverse as Fad Gadget, Marine, The Revenge, Kid Montana, Snowy Red, The Weathermen, The Names and Ink. Sadly singer Jerry died in 2000. As well as new artwork, the 70 minute CD also includes detailed sleeve notes and an assortment of period images and graphics.

A soul-ful psych-pop masterpiece with a heady groove, this album was *never released* due to label suits' inability to recognize it's genius. Beautifully played and produced, full of crazy invention and a loveably naive lack of self-consciousness, "BFI" is a miniature masterpiece, a lost classic of psych-whimsy, West Coast sexiness and serious musical chops. Surely we're ready by now..? Features the Dragon brothers who went on to become members of The Beach Boys backing band, and Daryll Dragon become The Captain of Captain & Tennille! Yes, really!

Favorita
S-T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 30TH)
PS, CANADA Twelve years after it was recorded but never released, Popsicle Recordings will present the sole album from Swedish indiepop pioneers Favorita. The brainchild of former Beagle and current Metro Jets frontman Magnus Borjeson, Favorita fell foul of record company politics on the eve of this album's 1997 release and it never saw the light of day. The band split up, the album was forgotten. Popsicle Recordings didn't want Favorita to pass into obscurity. Sure, the album has circulated as a bootleg among discerning music lovers for five or six years, but an album this good deserves a shot at reaching a wider audience. So they dusted off the master tapes, added eight bonus cuts and both of the band's low-budget videos, unearthed photos from the two promo shoots the band did and coaxed some inspired sleeve notes from noted Swedish journalist and blogger (and former Beagle drummer) Anders Mildner. The result is the definitive Favorita experience. Everything you could want to know about this exceptional but criminally short-lived band, there on one disc.
