Parasol New Arrivals • July 17, 2007

Hello friends,

Yes sir, Tuesday is upon us again and we’re excited for our beloved UPS driver, Drew, to arrive because he should have our new coffee maker (the fixin’ that we mentioned in last week’s update went south) and the new import from Parasol favorite Prefab Sprout. We’re keeping our fingers crossed and our hopes high.

While we’re at it, here are a few highlights from the list below: SSD (Power re-issue on vinyl), Jackie-O-Motherf*cker, Harvey Milk, Old Joy, Stuporhero, etc.

Have a gander under our rants and may your week be over easy.

Soon,

Royal & Paul

The Green Pajamas "Box of Secrets: Northern Gothic 2" CD (ON SALE) $9.00 (A Hidden Agenda Record)
The new album from legendary Seattle psych-pop band The Green Pajamas, led by Jeff Kelly and burning brightly in their third decade of existence. Box of Secrets is the follow-up to Northern Gothic and finds the band exploring childhood nostalgia in sturdy psych rock forms, but with a spooky, superstitious twist... a bit more rocking and psychedelic than recent offerings. Check out the release page for free MP3 and more.

Ace of Clubs
Benefist
PS, US You might decide it's the sequel to the Warp album, Yoseph, or that it's probably the most party-action aimed set from Luke to date. Acid dancefloor monsters shag the brains out of freestyle, disco & house, though by the end this will all mean nothing: it's simply another explosion of Vibert hits. Experience once again the magic & accident of classic acid, Luke Vibert-style.

Cribs, The
Men's Needs, Women's Needs, Whatever
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "With each album, the Cribs have gotten a little sharper and more focused, and nowhere is this clearer than on the brilliantly named Men's Needs, Women's Needs, Whatever, the band's major-label debut... The album kicks off with a slew of bouncy, angular songs about awkward relationships and killer crushes that sound like state-of-the-art British indie circa the late 2000s...like the results of an experiment to fuse together Maxïmo Park, the Futureheads, and Good Shoes in some secret lab...adding influences from American acts like Weezer and the Strokes." Durutti Column
Idiot Savants
PS, UK The Durutti Column follow-up 2006's Keep Breathing with a brand new album, Idiot Savants. Written and played by Vini Reilly, with drums and percussion from the Guru himself, Bruce Mitchell. The Durutti Column emerged from the late 70s Manchester punk scene and has remained one of the most intriguing, enigmatic (and arguably under appreciated) acts in the country. The band name is derived from a 60s anarchist movement. - an anarchist group in Europe who published a book with a sandpaper cover so that it would destroy all the other books on the shelves. He borrowed the practice of using sandpaper as a packaging medium, until record shops forced him to stop, fed up of the stock surrounding the Durutti Column being destroyed. Despite the tremendous critical acclaim that greeted his music, Vini Reilly seldom performed live during the early 1980s. The days of gigging with Joy Division were over and Vini became a virtual recluse. However his reputation grew and by the 90s Durutti Column's legendary status made them a cult attraction all over the world, a position they maintain to this day.

Frank, Bob & Murry, John
The Gun Play EP
PS, UK "The Gunplay EP", released in Europe on Decor Records in May 2007 during Bob Frank and John Murry's month-long tour there in support of "World Without End", was originally meant to be recorded as a supplement to the full length album mentioned previously. Instead, this "EP", if a ten-song record can truly be called an EP, is filled with the work of the same musicians who participated in the recording of "World Without End" and was once again produced and recorded by Tim Mooney of American Music Club. "The Gunplay EP" resurrects 4 old murder ballads from stagnation and gives them back their original lyrics, sanitized to suit broader audiences through the years. In addition, it includes the newly-penned "Gary Gilmore, 1977", written by Bob and John specifically for this EP. It also includes two live recordings, both songs from "World Without End": "Joaquin Murietta, 1853" and "Boss Weatherford, 1933". "..and then they immediately record a stunning EP in addition. The work of Frank and Murry is filled with ferocity and brilliance." -- Allan Jones, UNCUT Magazine "..beautifully dark and depressing. This is sure to become an underground hit." --Whitney Matheson, USA Today "4/5 Stars" --Joe Breen, The Irish Times "Oppressive, claustrophobic, and extraordinary. Just make sure you listen with the lights on." --Brian Denny, Morning Star, Britain.

Hopewell
Beautiful Targets/Not Birds (ON SALE)
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Imagine a more power-pop version of the Electric Light Orchestra, with a hint of the Police thrown in, and you have something like the sound Hopewell approximate on Beautiful Targets. Those references might serve as either a zesty recommendation or a sober warning, depending on your tastes. It can't be denied, however, that it's well-crafted pop-rock with serious echoes of the 1970s in its hooks, occasional dramatic orchestration, deft insertion of keyboard licks, and assertive high male vocals. The wistfulness of the arching melodies and general conscientious attention to production and songwriting craft will also bring to mind British aces in those departments like Paul McCartney, Jeff Lynne, and (more faintly) Ray Davies. The arrangements might be more impressive than the songs themselves, which like some of McCartney's and Lynne's can be more interesting for the melodic ingenuity than the emotional or intellectual content. Still, it's a varied menu of pop-rock that's inventive (and out of step with the trends) enough to place it closer to alternative-indie-minded pop than the early twenty-first century mainstream, though it might have fit in just fine on commercial radio about thirty years earlier." Lights Out Asia
Tanks and Recognizers
PS, US Wisconsin post-celestial-shoegazer trio Lights Out Asia delivers their sophomore full length and debut for n5MD titled Tanks and Recognizers. This follow-up to their critic and fan favorite Garmonia (sun sea sky) pushes their sound far forward with a palpable intensity by giving a seemingly subliminal nod to some of the more electronically minded ethereal bands of the mid 80s to early 90s like Breathless, Chapterhouse, My Bloody Valentine or even the more emotionally rich moments of Colourbox. Lights Out Asia who is actually influenced more by a more current crop of like-minded artists such as Mogwai, Massive Attack, and Robin Guthrie's various works, blend them all, the erstwhile and contemporary, with an updated style, feel and modern expansiveness. Tanks and Recognizers is a cinematic and ambitiously crafted album which could easily fit into any indie rock or electronic music collection. Soaring, floating, and moving forward as it pulls you in to its hopeful heart consuming ebb and flow of electronics, guitars and lofty vocal yearning.

Romboy, Marc
Sunburst
PS, GERMANY As an artist, producer and label head of Berlin's Systematic Records (amongst others), Marc Romboy has dedicated over a decade of time to pushing forward the boundaries of electronic music, a mission amply continued here with his first release on Will Saul's Simple imprint. Opener 'Sunburst' offers layers of eerie, whispered vocals wrapped around a dark and menacing chord pattern. As the track develops though, the chords open out to bring light to the dancefloor and dramatically change the mood into something wonderfully uplifting. Marc also offers a reduced version of 'Sunburst' as a dub to complete the trip. The Alexkid remix brings some proper old school house vibes to the mix. Alex and his 909 go to work on Marc's stabs to devastating effect.

Rooney
Calling the World
PS, US Their second album "Calling The World" - a pop-rock manifesto and contribution to the rock-pop body of work initiated by The Beatles and The Beach Boys and propagated by subsequent groups such as Queen, E.L.O., Cheap Trick, The Cars, Jellyfish and Weezer. Lead singer Robert Schwartzman wrote all of the songs on "Calling the World" after searching for a sound that would at once rock and "also make people dance". The first single from "Calling the World" is "When Did Your Heart Go Missing?" - an effervescent head-bobber with an infectious chorus. Other songs from the album include the mini-rock opera "I Should Have Been After You," "Believe In Me," a driving synth-propelled call for a leap of faith, "What For" a breezy and melodic slice of friendly advice, and "Help Me Find My Way," a poignant ode to Robert's late father.

Russell, Bruce
Gilded Splinters
PS, US When I began to record under my own name, one of the things I wanted to focus on was tape work, as opposed to documentation recordings of live improvisations, which most of my other work has been. My first solo single was produced by the simple expedient of halving the tape speed, thereby doubling the beauty of the original ultra-lo-fi recording. A great boost to my resolve in this area was given by Ralf Wehowsky's invitation in 1996 to participate in what became the Tulpas project. His faith in me gave me confidence to consider my work as a form of composition, and has led directly to this album. In this regard, the support of Matthew Leonard has also been very helpful. My plan was to compile examples of my tape work over the last few years, as a way of showing the different approaches and developing methodologies that I have employed. Originally I envisaged a double CD, but this has proven to be both too expensive and ultimately too hubristic. Making these recordings has been a learning process, but a very satisfying one. My working practices have often been deliberately primitive and brutal, and I make no apology for that. It is the ideas and their expression that should be of interest, not merely questions of technique. It remains only to note the inspiring example of many more illustrious names in this genuinely twentieth century art form." -Bruce Russell, Lyttelton, 2004.

Steinbecks
Far From The Madding Crowd
PS, US On Far From the Madding Crowd Steinbecks' songwriters, brothers Josh & Joel Meadows, team up with their cousin Tali White (Lucksmiths, Guild League) to craft one of the first shining pop gems of the post-Candle Melbourne pop scene. The Meadows brothers have been writing and singing songs about things that matter to them for longer than either care to remember, but Far From the Madding Crowd marks the first time the brothers have written and recorded with their cousin. Two songs on the album - 'The Doppler Effect', a powerful pop punch that dissects the city/country relationship, and the gorgeous 'Have You Ever Looked After a Song?' - are sung and co-written by White. Other stand-outs include opener '1987 + 1994 = 2007', in which the 'becks somehow manage to blend the sensibilities of the Pet Shop Boys with the sensuality of Pavement, and the angsty nature hymn, 'Moon & Stars'. Musically the record has echoes of Nick Drake, Lloyd Cole, My Morning Jacket, The Chills and Big Star. Lyrically, the 'becks tackle questions as diverse as: what happens to modern society when the oil runs out? Why is compromise not a dirty word when you're in love? will we ever learn to learn from the past? And, if you could go back to being a teenager, would you? The world is in a mess, The Steinbecks seem to acknowledge, but faith, hope and love remain. Far From the Madding Crowd exists within this reality and tries to tell the story of it through the only medium The Steinbecks know: the pop song.

Swayzak
So Cheap
PS, UK The winter seemed longer that year. The hard ground remained barren with no concession to the new life below. There was little color in our days, monochrome and fluid we felt as if we had slowed the clock in some wakeful hibernation state. How could we live again? What magic catalyst would reaffirm our existence? We dreamed of comets, fireflies and volcanoes. But neither fire nor fury was to be found. The only solution must come from within: creation. The machines were cleaned, oiled and primed. We began our task with some glee, willing ourselves to make the colored light. We longed to bask, vitamin D deficiency, a pallid opacity in our faces. 'So Cheap.' Started life in southern France on a vintage PC. Went to London for a new suit and haircut. Became a live / CDR favorite. Pure Swayzak classic, moody synths, skipping beats and 'Reverb by the Rub of Love' - danger in the building. Prehistoric techno slapper. Nil by mouth. 'Schlaffen' - cash converters revenge. Get up early - no sleepers.

Various
White Lace & Strange: Heavy Psych and Power Fuzz from the USA 68-72
PS, UK White Lace & Strange is comprised of rare U.S. stomp-rock from the '60s you've probably never heard before. By the end of the '60s, psychedelia was pretty much a spent force. Bands were looking for something simpler and more earthy. Crosby, Stills & Nash had gone all acoustic and harmonious, The Band had achieved a return to classic Americana, and James Taylor was showing the world you could be laid back and hip at the same time. However, not everyone wanted to ditch their fuzzboxes. Inspired by such outfits as Cream, Blue Cheer, Hendrix and the nascent Led Zeppelin, these American bands were moving out of psych into something less cosmic and far heavier. This mix of blooze rock and heavy riffing is loud and nasty but it pre-dates metal. It's pretty tripped-out, but it's not really psychedelia. It's the sound of guitar, bass and drums (and the occasional Hammond organ) just as it was meant to be -- cranked up and in your face. No frills, just power chords and stomping riffs. Stamp on that Big Muff and solo till your brain drops out. Compiled by Psychic Circle label head, Nick Saloman of The Bevis Frond.

Fairytales Can Come True: UK Popsike from the Late '60s
PS, UK The Psychic Circle label presents a volume of enchanting UK pop-psych; 20 previously uncomped tracks amongst which you'll find the pre-Fairport Iain Matthews, the only single from Jackie Lomax's Lomax Alliance, Gallagher & Lyle's unique response to Pet Sounds & a Troggs-like gem from P.J. Proby's hairdresser! Compilers and collectors alike know that there was some wonderful music coming out of the UK in the late '60s and it wasn't all-out psychedelia or floor-filling blue-eyed soul. Sure, all these tracks have a psychy feel, and some of them would pack a dancefloor, but really they're more concerned with harmony and pop sensibility. These are dazzling tracks from the late '60s UK scene, all very melodic and refreshing. Compiled by Nick Saloman (The Bevis Frond).

World On Higher Downs
Land Patterns
PS, JAPAN 4-piece group who all reside in different parts of Wisconsin. What started out as a loose idea based upon multiple collaborations, eventually blossomed into what is now known as this, their debut CD. Cliches in record-making were avoided, such as playing acoustic guitar over a sampled electronic drum beat - instead, the group made their sounds more smooth, more layered, staying away from digital cut-ups & trickery. Influences by shoegaze acts such as Slowdive, or other groups like Labradford are noticeable in the tracks. This sits somewhere between the murky depths of seasonal depression, cabin fever, & the blooming first days of spring.

Barbez
Mexico City Impressions b/w Somebody Get Rid Of The King (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 24TH)
PS, US This 7" is limited to 400 copies and was designed, signed and numbered by Barbez's Dan Kaufman. 100 are on red vinyl and 100 are on white vinyl. These two intense numbers were inspired by both a pleasant trip through a small historic neighborhood in Mexico city and the detestable Iraq war. Cover art was inspired by the abuse of prisoners in Guantanamo Bay. Look for the next Barbez record sometime soon on Tzadik. These two songs were recorded and mixed by the great Martin Bisi (Sonic Youth, John Zorn, Swans) at B.C. studios near the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, NY in 2006. They were mastered by Fred Kevorkian (White Stripes) at Avatar Studios. The first song, Mexico City Impressions, was conceived on a trip to Mexico City while strolling through a lovely neighborhood called Coyoacan where Frieda Kahlo, Leon Trotsky and Diego Rivera once lived some 60 years ago. There's a kind of Parisian feeling to the neighborhood and to a little park there with a carousel and people selling little bags of Mexican sweets. It's an extremely vibrant place, full of Meso-American sounds and colors floating about. This short pulsating song is my impression of that vibrancy, color and heartbeat of Mexico City, and an homage to the enchanting sound of the marimbas you hear everywhere in that city. The second song, Somebody Get Rid of the King, is an angry lament that comes out of a great fury at the Iraq War and especially at the cruelty of the United States towards the detainees it holds in Guantanamo and in the tortures it perpetrated at the Abu Ghraib prison. The subject was close to my heart as I spent several years working as a researcher with famed journalist Seymour Hersh on his book, Chain of Command, which detailed these outrageous war crimes. The song begins in a slow and mournful vein only to transform into a punk-rock blowout full of rage.

Bishop Allen
The Broken String (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 24TH)
PS, US 2006 was a big year for BISHOP ALLEN - The band recorded and self-released an EP every month of the year. Fifty-eight songs later, they completed one of the most ambitious recording projects in recent memory. Their 2003 debut, "Charm School," was a hooky indie-pop gem, but Bishop Allen's EP material proves far more sophisticated and addictive. With the EPs, Bishop Allen's pop smarts sound timeless, escaping the indie-pop idiom and revealing a language informed by the Kinks, Dylan, and the Zombies. While it was in motion, the EP-a-month project was the toast of the blogosphere, but it wasn't just an online phenomenon; it garnered the band attention everywhere from the Wall Street Journal to NPR's Song of the Day. This adulation all happened without the benefit of a record label or publicist. Bishop Allen was truly DIY, recording and releasing their own records and booking their own tours. In early 2007, the band struck a partnership with DEAD OCEANS and the first fruit of this relationship is Bishop Allen's sophomore album, "The Broken String." If Bishop Allen made a huge musical jump from the 2003 debut to the 2006 EPs, the band made a quantum leap on "The Broken String." If Ed Sullivan were alive today, Bishop Allen's story-songs would be ripe for prime time. "The Broken String" is not just a great record by Bishop Allen standards. It is poised to be the pop soundtrack to the summer of 2007.

Blumm, F.S.
Meets Luca Fadda (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 24TH)
PS, GERMANY For this record FS Blumm has written some of his most light-hearted tunes, accompanied by NY trumpeter Luca Fadda. Wonderful guitar and double bass lines are accompanied with processed toy instruments and found objects. The new dimension of this album is the collaboration with Luca Fadda who places digitally processed trumpets on top of Blumm's material. These improvised elements add a new live feeling to F.S. Blumm's music and creates a less melancholic mood than previous records released on labels like Morr, Staubgold and Plop. There are two 15 minute pieces on this album: one is `Ricke and Dina`, the other is `Giorgi and Lucy´. `Giorgi and Lucy´ was inspired by the last piece of a live set at the `epistrophy´ in New York on December 1st 2006 where Luca Fadda and F.S.Blumm met on stage. ‚Ricke and Dina' is based on a performance done in front of a childrens-audience during the presentation of a Peruvian fair trade collection of children`s wear at the belleville-store in Berlin on the afternoon of Oct. 1st 2005. This 3 hour live set has been carefully recorded by Lupo.

Carta
The Glass Bottom Boat (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 21ST)
PS, UK The fruits of a lengthy process involving an ever-changing line-up featuring a revolving door of San Francisco musicians, this is the long-awaited debut from Carta, now with settled personnel surrounding core member Kyle Monday. Engineered by Beulah's Eli Crews and featuring Sacha Galvagna and Jared Matt Greenberg (Charles Atlas) and Alexander Kort (Subtle) amongst others, 'The Glass Bottom Boat' is a remarkably accomplished album, as one might expect considering the pedigree of those involved. Having found a home on eclectic UK label Resonant, Carta's audience should be broad and widespread, with their overall sound avoiding pigeonholes. The album is mostly instrumental, predominantly downtempo but with constant emphasis on melody. The title track features full vocals from Sarah Bell, and sounds like the best thing Espers have ever recorded. Packaged in lavish six-panel digipak. Early review from US site www.thesilentballet.com: 'It's rare that we see an album that is so grounded in reality, yet simultaneously this is immaculately breathtaking.'

Cope, Julian
You Gotta Problem With Me (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 31ST)
PS, UK Julian Cope's new album YOU GOTTA PROBLEM WITH ME (no question mark) is another protest album in the tradition of his previous releases PEGGY SUICIDE, JEHOVAHKILL, AUTOGEDDON, CITIZEN CAIN'D and DARK ORGASM. Unlike most records by Cope's head-in-the-sand punk rock contemporaries (almost all of whom he believes to be shirking their primary rock'n'roll responsibility as cultural mouthpieces), YOU GOTTA PROBLEM WITH ME deals primarily with such currently controversial, nay taboo issues, as religion (our own and other peoples'), and the West's latest wave of xenophobia and self-doubts brought on by a combination of the war in Iraq, the so-called 9/11 bombings and the EEC's latest huge wave of migrants from former Communist countries. YOU GOTTA PROBLEM WITH ME also addresses all of Cope's other long-term gripes: corporate greed and the destruction of Mother Earth, misogyny and homophobia, and our apparent inability to address such essential matters due to cultural ignorance and the glaring faults in our education system. Yes, Lenny Bruce and Bill Hicks are dead, but Cope's still pissed off enough to fly the flag for all three! However, while the songs of YOU GOTTA PROBLEM WITH ME are even more lyrically hard-hitting than those on DARK ORGASM, musically this new record ploughs a far more traditional Copean furrow, returning the listener to insidiously melodic post-punk songs in the JEHOVAHKILL style, many sparsely orchestrated with Mellotron, wah-wah guitars, orchestral percussion and even lush harmonies. Released on double-CD and 12" vinyl gatefold sleeve LP, the 13 songs are split into two sections, and are accompanied by a 16-page booklet of insights, hard-hitting information, and a very epic poem: all designed to shake us from our post-everything stasis.

PS, US NOW AVAILABLE IN LIMITED EDITION VINYL FORMAT WITH FIVE NON-ALBUM BONUS TRACKS!!! Somewhere between the breakneck touring to support PINBACK'S breakthrough TOUCH AND GO debut, "Summer in Abaddon", and the release of THE LADIES' debut album (his collaboration with ZACH HILL of HELLA/TEAM SLEEP), the impossibly prolific Rob Crow had an epiphany: SLOW DOWN. Not coincidentally, this revelation occurred shortly after the birth of his first child (named Robertdale Crow III, of course). Crow's time at home was suddenly more important than ever. His family is all over "Living Well", his third solo album: in the album title, the artwork (layered with dozens of family photos), and the intensely personal lyrics which document Crow's courtship with his wife, their marriage, and the subsequent birth of their first child. Not only is "Living Well" Crow's finest solo album by a country mile, it also transcends many of Pinback's most canonic moments. It has the hooks and heart that he is famous for, with a refined focus not seen in Crow's other projects.

Crow, Rob
I Hate You, Rob Crow (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 24TH)

In addition to the album cut, the disc also includes two non-album tracks - the moody synth-driven instrumental "Sea Sawn," and the Heavy Vegetable-esque "Slick" - as well as the now-infamous video for "I Hate You, Rob Crow," featuring, among other highlights, Crow singing through a mic attached to a man's intestines.

Drift, The
(rmxs) (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 24TH)
PS, US Following the 2005 release of their debut album, "Noumena," THE DRIFT set out to tour relentlessly in support of the album. Two years later, the band is still on tour, and to keep up we're rolling out a limited edition 12" compiling two side-long remixes from FOUR TET and SYBARITE. Side A is a nine-minute jazz exploration, launching The Drift's spacious, atmospheric compositions into deserted, zero-gravity territory. Four Tet's remix is a stone cold classic, rich in the virtues of patience and the payoff. Side B, conversely, is a dense, rhythmic reworking of "Noumena's" most immediately accessible track, "Invisible Cities." Sybarite gets to the point quick, and fleshes out the deliriously funky details over the course of its emphatic 11-minute runtime. This 12" is strictly limited to 1,000 copies. Each copy is housed in a beautiful full-color chipboard jacket, and has been individually assembled by the tireless hands of the TEMPORARY RESIDENCE staff.

Epic 45
May Your Heart Be The Map (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 14TH
PS, UK It comes as no surprise to find that Epic45 grew up - and still reside - in a small rural village in the heartland of the English Midlands. Based around the nucleus of 25 year old school friends Ben Holton and Rob Glover, Epic45 have had a varied and fluid line-up since their debut in 1999, releasing a series of highly acclaimed EPs and albums for labels such as Bearos, Awkward Silence and Where Are My Records. Inspired by their surroundings, blissful childhood summers and mysterious / inspiring walks the duo have been making music for more than a decade. Their latest album May Your Heart be the Map' sees Epic45 concentrating on a more bucolic sound, mixing cyclical acoustic guitars, chiming reverbs and field recordings. The album was originally inspired by 1970s British TV series 'Survivors', a fictional account of a plague that wipes out most of the worlds population. The idea of a near-deserted world in which people have to rebuild their lives amid the ruins of the previous civilization seemed strangely appealing. However, other themes crept in slowly, the 'empty world' began to represent our lives now and inevitably the duo started looking back to childhood and simpler, happier times. The title is simply a rallying call to like minded people, an expression of hope in an uncertain world. As with previous releases, May Your Heart Be The Map features a collaboration with Antony Harding of July Skies/Avrocar. This time, Harding contributes fragile vocals to the track 'We Left Our Homes For Winter'. Whilst very unique in style and approach, the music and ethos of this album may recall the youthfulness of Leeds band Hood, the experimentalism of that great lost pop band from the 1990's Disco Inferno, and is likely to delight fans of the experimental label Type and their artists Helios, Xela and Goldmund. But no doubt admirers of other classic British bands such as New Order, The Durutti Column, Felt and The House of Love will also find much to immerse themselves in and start working their way through Epic 45's enigmatic back catalogue.

Fine Arts Showcase, The
Sings Rough Bunnies (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 2007)
PS, SWEDEN Third album from Gustaf Kjellvander's Fine Arts Showcase, and the follow-up to his 110% brilliant <a href="http://www.parasol.com/catalog/catalog.asp?zoomtitle=75849">'Radiola'</a>. The short version: TFAS covers 11 song by Swedish cult-twee-punk-lofi duo The Rough Bunnies. Highly recommended. The long version: This is an album of many stories. Gustaf Kjellvander and his friends in The Fine Arts Showcase have made a covers album, entirely based on songs from the Swedish, rather unknown, jangly, lo-fi band Rough Bunnies. Why is that? Let's make Gustaf himself explain: "I was first introduced to Anna Vermina and her cousin Frida, the founding members of Rough Bunnies and Inside Riot, through mutual friends. Frida gave me a CD-R just days before they were about to move to Berlin. About six months later I was looking for someone to rent my spare room. I bumped into Frida by chance, who told me she had moved back from Berlin to Malmö and needed a place to stay - so she moved in. I was already smitten by Inside Riot at this time, and when Frida played me the songs they had recorded in Berlin, along with the Rough Bunnies record C-sides, it blew me away. I played it to everyone who came over to my house. They became an obsession that carries on to this day. I knew I wanted the Fine Arts Showcase to cover their songs. The problem was that with a catalogue of songs as amazing as theirs it was hard to pick just one, so I came up with the idea that we should do an entire record instead (in the Merle Haggard sings Jimmy Rodgers tradition). And here it is: a musical love letter to two of my favorite songwriters, a celebration of the pop geniuses of the Vermina family. Rough Bunnies (and their twin group Inside Riot) have inspired me more than any other band this side of the millennium and this record is my way of thanking them. Rough Bunnies Saved My Life" - Gustaf Kjellvander

Garland, David
Noise in You (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 24TH)
PS, US "Noise In You" is an album of gorgeous music about noisy emotions: our desires and distractions, anxieties and passions, love and loss, and the living hum of our bodies. It is DAVID GARLAND'S 8th album since entering New York City's downtown scene in the 1980s, and it's the first to receive the wide distribution and attention his music deserves. Garland is a multi-instrumentalist currently exploring the sumptuous jangle of a 12-string guitar; he sings with a voice that's deep, honest, and intimate. "Noise In You" is unclassifiable: pop music that's both experimental and accessible, and is rich with intricate layered harmonies and startling colors and textures. It features the beautiful, sometimes mystical voices of a younger generation of musicians -- SUFJAN STEVENS, MIRA ROMANTSCHUK (of MI AND L'AU), DIANE CLUCK, VIKING MOSES, and DAVID DEPORIS -- together with guitars, flute, piano, clarinet, sarode, oboe, and more. Noise In You unfolds into a wondrous, subtly interconnected song cycle that sweeps you up in its imaginativeness, drama, and sensual pleasure.

Marmoset
Florist Fired (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 24TH)
PS, US Five years is a long time. Five years is an excruciatingly long time for a band like MARMOSET. Somehow this band has managed to bottle into one album all of the idiosyncrasies and pathos that have made them the critically-acclaimed band we all love. Merging the Swell Maps-inspired tumultuous clamor of their debut EP "Hiddenforbidden", the addictive two-minute anthems on "Today It's You", and the epic joyful dirges from "Record in Red", "Florist Fired" has it all. Although principal songwriter JORMA WHITTAKER possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of Beatles-esque melodies, "Florist Fired" leaves listeners with the unmistakable feeling that Marmoset owes much more to a Richards-led Stones swagger- without the budget or access to premium pharmaceuticals. In contrast to the seemingly lecherous, self-loathing Whittaker gems, guitarist DAVE JABLONSKI offers up detached ethereal odes like a man with his head truly in the clouds. The idea of being a traditional, functioning band has never quite caught on with Marmoset. Their live shows and behind-the-scenes breakdowns are spiritually aligned with the likes of BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE; but unlike BJM, the music you hear from Marmoset is pure sound vérité. No need for a ballyhoo project like "Dig!"- although the tales Marmoset could tell would certainly make for riveting viewing. Until the public is ready for such a trip into the madness, tension and ecstasy that is Marmoset, "Florist Fired" will serve quite nicely as their chariot on the road towards canonization.

My Little Airport
Zoo Is Sad, People Are Cruel (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 12TH)
PS, SPAIN MY LITTLE AIRPORT is an indie-pop/electro-noise-pop band from Hong Kong (the second Hong Kong artist in the Elefant Records story, right after THE PANCAKES), formed by P and Nicole, college classmates since 2001, and well known in the Hong Kong area thanks to the big success they had with their debut album. "Zoo is sad, people are cruel", is a fourteen-song album compiling the best moments off their two albums. A sweetest selection that will make you laugh and it will make you sigh, and above all it will fill you with joy. Their lyrics are about relationships and stories between P and his friends and acquaintances. Really, the lyrics are about this. Just check out song titles like "Victor, fly me to Stafford", "You don't wanna be my girlfriend, Phoebe" or "Leo, are you still jumping out of windows in expensive clothes?". Their twee-pop sound shares the naïveté of the Sarah Records bands, the simple chrams of CONFETTI and THE SOFTIES and the unaffected intonations of HEAVENLY's Amelia Fletcher. Sometimes, their sound tends more towards punk-pop à la HELEN LOVE (as in the short pill that is "Gigi Leung is dead"), and they also openly acknowledge their fondness for SLOWDIVE y MOJAVE 3, who might be a big influence on the final track, "Dee, it may all end up tomorrow". But, with a song titled "When I listen to The Field Mice", what else could they be but an indie band?
