Hey friends,

Yes indeed, we’re back with another update chocked full of grand new releases! In my humble opinion, I do believe that our pals from the north, Maritime, have released yet another great record titled “Heresy & the Hotel Choir”. Give it a listen if you are so inclined.

All right, the list below will keep you busy for a while so we’ll keep our part brief. More highlights include: Boyracer, Wooden Sky, MV & EE with Golden Road, Karen Dalton and oh, so many more.

Until then,

Royal & Paul

The Wooden Sky "When Lost At Sea" CD $11.00 (Self-Released)
Toronto's Wooden Sky have cut together a collage of folk songs on their debut record, When Lost at Sea, that has drawn comparisons ranging from Townes Van Zandt to Okkervil River. Swelling between 4 and 7 members the group handle each song differently as the record runs the course from ragged rockers like 'North Dakota' to the delicately orchestrated 'The Wooden Sky'. Each song is delivered with a sense of urgency echoing the records underlying themes and bridging the gap across the range of dynamics. THANKS CAPTAIN OBVIOUS REVIEW: "The songs on their album When Lost At Sea are twang-filled tales peppered with harmonica, banjo and slide guitar. Lead singer Gavin Gardiner's scratchy vocals navigate through songs that have a literary, narrative feel to them. And while they never approach the scope of bookishness that a band like the Decemberists may portray, there's definitely a rich sense of storytelling apparent in the folk-rock gems that comprise the album."

All Sides
Dedalus
PS, UK Following two EPs on Make Mine Music and Chat Blanc Records, and a collaborative album with Troum on Old Europa Café, "Dedalus" is the first full-length album from Nina Kernicke aka All Sides. Drawing influence from the likes of Slowdive, Radiohead, Scorn, Meat Beat Manifesto and Mark Hollis, to name but a few. Nina's music has been greeted with praise from many quarters, including Boomkat who noted that the music of All Sides successfully merged many styles into a "euphoric" blend. "Dedalus" is partly an expression and reflection of Nina's personal experiences, but it was also inspired by recording the album "Shutun" and touring Poland, Finland, Canada and USA with Troum, an experimental, drone outfit based in Nina's hometown of Bremen, Germany. The album's title is, in part, a reference to the character Stephen Dedalus in the James Joyce's classic novel Ulysses. The title track gives a clearer indication about the context, in its use of a sample from a cinematic version of the novel, in which Dedalus walks along a beach, looking out to sea, becoming aware of his loneliness. Simultaneously, the title refers to the character from Greek mythology whose son Icarus dies during their escape from Crete - Dedalus and Icarus build wings out of feathers and wax and, in spite of warnings, Icarus flies too high and too close to the sun, melting the wax and plunging him into the sea. References to both of these can be found throughout the album, but they are as much metaphors for Nina's personal experiences as they are literary references. The CD comes housed in luxurious cardboard and felt packaging, limited to 500 copies.

Ana D
Satélite 99
PS, SPAIN In October it will be ten years since we released one of the most unique records that have ever been done in Spain and, we dare say, elsewhere. Ana D has become since then a legendary name to whisper to each other's ears, and we want to celebrate the tenth anniversary of her only official album as it deserves: with a full re-release that rises to its condition of lost classic album, joining an extra bonus album that enhances even more the new release. Today, "Satélite 99" sounds as fascinatingly weird and beautiful as it did the first day. As if a more sophisticated Martin Rev collaborated with a tattooed, black-haired Nancy Sinatra, or with a mysteriously distant Astrud Gilberto, on this album Ana D and her companions, producers and arrangers (Ibon Errazkin and Javier Corcobado) used vintage instruments and forgotten beat boxes to create their own kind of "acoustic synth-pop", with references that ranged from Kur Weill and Serge Gainsbourg to SUICIDE themselves.

Capstan Shafts, The
Environ Maiden
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "The Capstan Shafts' first album for Rainbow Quartz, Environ Maiden, does nothing to separate them from the Guided by Voices comparisons that 2006's Euridice Proudhon made inescapable. Dean Wells is still writing short, ultra-hooky rock opera excerpts, recording them quickly and simply with little or no fidelity, and singing them in a Robert Pollard-esque pretend-English accent... You could write it off as hero worship or copycat-ism, but once again Wells dodges any negative connotations by being just as witty, tuneful, and fun as PollardGBV without any of the frustrating arty tendencies or annoying attempts at being a real rock band... Each song is as good as the last, and if you don't like the one playing, wait a few seconds and the next hit will come rolling along. Environ Maiden is a perfect tonic for anyone longing for the return of Guided by Voices, but also a nice bonus for anyone who ever wished GBV would quit fooling around and just deliver a solid record from beginning to end."

Chamellows
Rat Hearts
PS, FINLAND With its lo-fi production, eclectic instrumentation and landscape of found sounds, Chamellows' (a/k/a Sleeping Bags) Rat Hearts floats between clanky distortion and gauzy, melodic spirals with an organic ease that lends the 16 tracks their hypnotic and often cinematic appeal. Compiled from rare tracks and seven-inches recorded between 1997 and 2001, the enigmatic, reigning queen of Finnish folk music, Laura Naukkarinen (Lau Nau), and collaborator Mikko Kuorinki have compiled an anthology that transports the listener to a place that is simultaneously foreign and familiar.

Comaneci
Volcano
PS, ITALY At the 1976 Olympics a young girl made history. With cat-like grace and a framework like a butterfly, she enchanted the public, floating between the parallels, becoming the first gymnast ever to score a perfect 10. In 2003 a three-piece outfit from Ravenna, Italy chose the last name of Nadia Comaneci for their minute but strong music project. With an ethereal and visceral voice this emotional trio is secretive but surprisingly explosive. Comaneci makes quiet but evocative music. They know how to make noise without pumping up the volume. Their acoustic chamber-pop is intimate, soothing and involving. Francesca Amati's dreamlike voice is peculiar in an already peculiar band. After two self-produced EPs, and collaboration with director Stefano Mordini for the soundtrack of his film "Provincia Meccanica" (EMI Records), and also presented at the Berlin Film Festival, the Disasters By Choice label presents Comaneci's first full-length recording named Volcano. Through twelve tracks the record synthesizes the essence of the band. Francesca's voice is perfectly supported by the soft and effective chords of Andrea Carella's guitar and by Jenny Burnazzi's emotive cello. Advised for those who still feel for simple song.

Dragons of Zynth
Coronation Thieves
PS, US PITCHFORK: "Given the scarcity of African-American-fronted indie rock bands specializing in industrial-decayed, atonal soul music, the knee-jerk reaction to hearing Dragons of Zynth is to compare them to their friends and mentors TV on the Radio. DoZ vocalist Aku and his twin brother/guitarist Akwetey O.T. were part of the drum-circle chorus on "Let the Devil In", from TVotR's 2006 masterwork Return to Cookie Mountain. The Dragons' debut album, Coronation Thieves, was produced by TVotR's David Sitek. Both of the aforementioned records open with songs that mention lovers and war (TVotR's "I Was a Lover" versus DoZ's "War Lover"). The bands even share celebrity fans in David Bowie and Massive Attack, the latter of which have enlisted DoZ's services for their next album. But in spite of both bands' preference for discordant guitar tones, elastic vocals, and fractured rhythms, to say Dragons of Zynth sound like TV on the Radio is telling only half the story: They sound like TV on the Radio played backwards."

Echos Of The Whales
Echos Of The Whales
PS, ITALY Though POPULOUS and Pierpaolo Leo are such different musical figures (the first best known for his two indie hip-hop records on Morr Music, the latter for his long time experimentations in the avant-garde milieu), they collaborated and recorded their EOTW album at home, helping themselves with all but modern technologies, aiming at the spirit of pioneers of electronic music like Raymond Scott and psychedelic-rock heroes like United States Of America. If whales were able to make music how would it sound? We can't be sure they would use the same resonances these two boy scouts extracted from their instruments, yet we have good reasons for believing whales music would probably be as minimal and ambient as this. EOTW is a record of eerie folk with guitars (played by Stefano Pilia and Jukka Riverberi of Giardini Di Mirò, among others), Farfisa organs, feedbacks and digital grains merging to create a fertile resounding ground: a real extension of the natural environment. Actually, you may find listening to these echoes very fulfilling while paddling in your kayak, cleaning up a shore or trying to photograph penguins in Antarctica.

Holy Shit!
S-T
PS, US This phenomenal debut LP is now here & is easily one of the most unique & original albums a band has ever done for us. This is hard, fast, crazed, careening, raw & wild hardcore punk w/ each song whipping by at frightening speed, teetering on the brink of an alcohol-filled explosion before crashing to a sudden abrupt knee- in-the-bollocks end. Spastic vocals, pounding bass, some of the best drumming you'll ever hear, & wild man guitar riffage.

Islaja
Ulual YYY
PS, FINLAND Islaja's third album is a journey deeper into the world that for us is a dream and a fairytale, but to her a reality. Islaja as a concept has turned into a star that is expected to shine with brilliance. But she is something else. The songs tell us about the decay of our age, its demise and immorality. Its plunge into heartless consumer culture. Islaja herself does not burn in that same fire. Her fire is an inner fire. Behind her eyes and in her heart you can see and hear her true charisma. True dedication and utter disrespect for the artificial authority made by men. Yet she is not the self-destructive Nico or the eccentric Björk. But a good woman. A tough one. Her eyes can burn a hole in you. Her songs are poems and stabbing knives.

Kemialliset Ystävät
Untitled
PS, FINLAND New 2007 album. Please receive this carefully cooked porridge, the new untitled Kemialliset Ystävät full length album. Pulsating, radiant and turbo-charged, this music shares the groove of a junk pile AND a wild foal. It comes with the lovely smell of the chemical they spray on apple trees. It's a highly ambitious effort originally planned to become a defying message in a bottle, limited edition of one, addressed to the Man. Kemialliset Ystävät has been rocking out for some time now and there is no end in sight. Without all the experiments of the past, this record would not exist while there's still plenty of fresh perspective in the mix, too. Listen to Roope drum his belly, Laura play tambura and Jaakko go berserk on a Chinese flute. Listen carefully. Lots of energy went into the mixing: a million voices from friends are twisted into one hypnotic over-the-top sound textile that vibrates and grows to every direction resembling a living organism, a merry beast. Give it a hug and you will gain power, it is like shooting up echinacea. Wrap it around you and tune in to the blizzard. Sit down and blast as loud as possible!

Mullen, Geoff
Armory Radio
PS, US Departing from last year's blues-influenced "The Air In Pieces", Geoff surprises us once again with his creative diversity & his ongoing search for new sonic territory. Inspired by a barely working short-wave radio he found in the garbage, the guitar driven drones of this album are embedded w/ repeating themes of obsolete technology & found objects giving way to comparisons to the ethereal short-wave recordings of William Basinski or Phil Niblock. Amanecer en Puerta Oscura
PS, US The album helps give a new perspective into the soul of the music they create as well as its movement into several different directions. At the same time the band has not forgotten their true metal roots & Andalusian cultural origins.

Pylon
Gyrate + [expanded re-issue]
PS, US Remastered with bonus tracks. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "This is Pylon at their purest, mixing the spartan angularity of Gang of Four with a playfulness missing from similar U.K. bands like the Au Pairs or the early Mekons (or indeed from Gang of Four themselves) as well as the irresistible danceability of their Athens, GA, compatriots the B-52's. Yet Pylon never quite sounded like anyone except Pylon; their naïve instrumental style -- guitarist Randy Bewley claimed that he didn't even know the names of any notes or chords -- and singer Vanessa Briscoe's inimitable voice (moving from a flirtatious coo to a Meredith Monk shriek in the space of a line) and inscrutable lyrics are so idiosyncratic that they probably couldn't sound like anyone else..."

Risk Relay
Curses Sing
PS, US Again recording their album completely by themselves, RR have tread a long road, losing a bassist, hiring a handful more, recording the basslines themselves & ultimately taking a few perfectionists' swings at the final product before overcoming the sophomore pitfalls that ultimately inspired Curses Sing. Time hasn't mellowed them instead seemingly encouraging even more complicated rhythms, brutally heavy twists & turns, and antagonistic melodies. Even with new tricks; a smattering of female vocals, atmospheric interludes & more immediate vocals, this is a rumbling percussive call to arms that never hints at a falter.

Sleepin States
There the Open Spaces
PS, UK You read a lot about people making records about what London sounds like, but his songs are the only thing that ever reminds me what it's like to be there." Klaxons speaking to Pitchfork "A dozy, dusty little gem... Blissfully evocative of the kind of summer that involves heat hazy, slightly stoned loungers rather than drunken, shouty blokes in football shirts. " Time Out "It's weird when a song comes out of nowhere and ends up being one of your favorite musical discoveries... I stumbled across his website and saw the video for 'rivers' then fell in love." Grizzly Bear speaking to Pitchfork Sleeping States is the evolving musical project of Markland Starkie, a Midlands born artist who has spent the first half of his twenties living, working and studying in London. Having grown up with classical music training, Markland became enamored with the possibilities of noise in a musical context and so began his playful experiments with noise in various bands, including noise pop outfit Kaito. After moving to London and feeling a subsequent sense of dislocation, Markland began a series of home recordings of short songs from the heart that were more minimal in both volume and arrangement, with melodies taking more of a central role. Sleeping States was born. Armed with an electric guitar, found sounds, vocal samplers and a four-track recorder, Markland transformed his experiments with sound in to a fully-fledged body of work.

Sputnik
Shine On...
PS, US Sputnik is a NYC/Cape Cod based band led by singer and songwriter Genie Morrow. The group combines dreamy vocals, ambient guitar effects, trumpet, keyboards, and accordion to create a joyful, summery blend of straight ahead pop, with irresistible melodies. Sputnik's second full length cd "SHINE ON" was recorded by Grammy Award winning producer Carl Glanville (U2 "How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb", Franz Ferdinand) The new album mixes meticulously-crafted, stick-in-the-head original compositions with thoroughly re-worked versions of classics from the Kinks, the Zombies, Brian Wilson and The Velvet Underground. The album features guest appearances Benny Rietveld, Jason Roberts and Chris Butler. All of this combined with Mic Rains' alternately tuned guitars, Analog Arts Ensemble's Joe Drew on trumpets and keyboards, Pemberton Roach on bass and Nigel Rawles' Moonesque presence, creates quite an exciting blend of sounds and spirit! Ballads of survival are the themes of Genie Morrow's songs. Here ethereal yet gritty voice take the listener to wondrous places like the fields of Salinas, CA, outer space and the power lines on Cape Cod...

Text Adventure
I Believe in Lassies
PS, SPAIN Once upon a time, computer games didn't rely on graphics to suck you in. The first "Text Adventure" A game which relied on your imagination to unfold it's magic, has formed the inspiration for our favorite release of the year so far. The second album by David Roy and Stephen Scott, I BELIEVE IN LASSIES is homage to lo-fi brilliance in a world gone pro-tools mad. You see, it's about addressing the simple things. IBIL is a record about girls by boys too shy to talk to them in person, and one that communicates in an aching swirl of acoustic and digital lo-fi, the longing of not only meeting that spry-eyed girlie, but actually being able to say hi. What must be a crippling disability for David and Stephen, is a blessing for the rest of us, as we get treated to 10 tracks bursting with the self-confidence that can only come from living in hope. Crafted from acoustic guitar, Casio keyboards, circuit bent speak and spell machines, and live drums recorded to a "very, very old 8-track". The songs have a layered aesthetic in the vein of Adem and Tunng. But this is more than an exercise in nerdy bedroom electronica: "I have tried to move away from that" asserts David. "The Golden Portion was very much sequence-based, computer-recorded, programmed beats, tons more keyboards and hardly any guitar. I felt it had been done to death already, so i wanted to make a grander sounding folk record with loads more guitars and more vocals too" Songs are as important to the boys as textures, and the melodies come at you with such self-assurance that you don't know whether to meet them with a bear hug or duck for cover. With collaboration comes perspective, and Stephen's vocals liberate David's soundscapes, adding a psychedelic edge in the vein of My Bloody Valentine, but with a dose of skewed realism. Lines like "I'll be the scarf around your neck" (If It Could Talk It Wouldn't Say Anything) make you gaze up from your shoes and focus instead on your breaking heart. This yearning wistfulness can be traced through a number of influences; from James Taylor and Nick Drake, through to Ariel M and Jim O Rourke. The record also pushes the line between analogue and digital instruments just a little bit further. Are the bleeps at the end of Pink Smoke, forged through Logic or a circuit bent keyboard? Is that a harmonium or a sine wave on If It Could Talk It Wouldn't Say Anything? Is that a fast flowing stream or a microphone left on in a pocket. Really good records speak their own language, and ask you to investigate them to understand. And so it is with IBIL: complex textures and simple melodies conspiring to make it at once disarming and compelling. It's music inspired by accidents, by finding beauty in the unintentional, the 'wyrd' in the everyday. David states his inspiration as "Whenever I hear something natural that has gone wrong or has been digitally manipulated. Like an old field recording of some birds or rain that has been distorted." Text Adventure is perfect pop, with a post rock sensibility: Gorgeous acoustic guitar lines hang hammocked in the mix between crackling static like an electronic rainstorm. The tracks come on like a series of commands strung together to create a whole gaming experience. Take Boobook (For R) which opens with three minutes of bossa guitar worthy of Eureka era Jim O Rourke before even a sniff of a lyric. Or Nothing is Wrong (Nothing is wrong) whose Mice Parade-esque guitar line warps into a digital portrait of the wintertime before bursting back again into full summer.

Underworld
Oblivion with Bells
PS, US PREFIX MAGAZINE: "The British electronic duo Underworld seems to be aging more gracefully than contemporary act the Chemical Brothers. Rather than fire up a new album every three or four years with a handful of cool new guests, as the Chems do, Rick Smith and Karl Hyde have stayed more true to the vision of their artistry. It's been a while since Underworld's last true album, A Hundred Days Off, but that doesn't necessarily mean that Smith and Hyde have been unoccupied. They've steadily been releasing music online as well as dabbling with film scoring. Oblivion with Bells finds a balance between that recent cinematic prettiness and the frenetic, almost dance-punk sound of Underworld's earlier work. The duo reportedly had a ton of new songs ready for the album, and sought input from famous friends like Brian Eno, U2 drummer Larry Mullen Jr., and former member Darren Price when whittling down the final track list."

Vast
April
PS, US Record entirely in Austin Texas, VAST tracked much of the album playing together live. Many of the vocals and instruments were recorded in one take giving the record a much more human feel. However, the signature melancholy VAST melodies and themes are here, as well as the sonic and instrumental experimentation that has garnered the band it's underground fan base. "I tried to create a more acoustic record, one that sort of took a page from the older roots of rock and even country music but still felt like new territory," says VAST front man Jon Crosby. "I think there are songs here that have a wide appeal, but these songs were meant to be part of an album, so it's not about selling singles. I really want fans and even people who are new to the band to get a complete musical picture."

Walter, Joel
Heart Of Branches
PS, US A collection of wearily reflective songs written & recorded over the past two years. Bleak, bitter, yet hopeful; Walter's songs have an austerity that you discover via his honest vocal delivery even before you experience it in the songwriting itself. Walter's singing is raspy & unbridled, and the intricate yet uncluttered arrangements on his debut provide the perfect aural setting for them to shine. Weaving together sounds both classic & modern, the tapestries of voice, guitar & harmonica, sometimes augmented by mandolin, piano & Magnus, add luminous musical textures, sometimes ominous but
always haunting.

Wooden Sky, The
When Lost At Sea
PS, US Toronto's Wooden Sky have cut together a collage of folk songs on their debut record, When Lost at Sea, that has drawn comparisons ranging from Townes Van Zandt to Okkervil River.

A Taste Of Ra
Morning of My Life (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 23RD)
PS, SWEDEN This is the third and final album in the A Taste of Ra trilogy. Nicolai Dunger, and the cloak of mystery behind the Taste of Ra project has captivated many with its various incarnations of free-folk meanderings, Tim Buckley jazz-howl and Swedish pastoral indie-hum. Dunger describes Morning of My Life as follows: "When we moved to the tent and the light was golden and we were young, and the magazine was all there was to bring, and you woke in the night when the birds were singing just for you and the smell of soil and the warm breath over through you, ohh it moved you. All there was to it, was the morning of my life." He also describes that the overall idea behind the first two A Taste of Ra records was for pure vocal and instrumental experimentation -- using recording techniques on a more personal level. On this final record in the trilogy, he takes a different approach, starting off with one song that he developed together with Swedish musician, songwriter and producer, Jari Haapalainen. The song naturally broke up into six movements, creating a film-like, dramatic pattern, and Johan Berthling made some beautiful arrangements for three of the movements. Starsailor-esque vocals, jazzy horns and loose, clattering drums mix with piano, harp and guitar arpeggios -- just as much of an Impressionistic song cycle as Van Morrison's Astral Weeks.

Brother Kite, The
Moonlit Race (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 6TH)
PS, US Over a year in the making, The Brother Kites Moonlit Race EP has undergone several conceptual changes as time has moved on. The final product is one to cherish. Originally conceived as a single for Get On, Me - arguably the catchiest song on their masterful sophomore album Waiting For The Time To Be Right the EP stays true to form by leading off with that track. From there on, the listener is treated to five exclusive tracks. We are treated to alternate versions and mixes of two album tracks from WFTTTBR, including the title cut and Hopeless and Unsung. A never-before-released live version of Never in Years from a WERS 88.9 radio session in Boston is also included. Sandwiched in the middle of the disc are two solid non-album tracks. Unearthed/Digging in the Dirt is taken from DJ Potters creepy child-zombie short film Of All That Is Unearthed. The track Half Century appears here in hard-copy format for the first time. The track was originally recorded for the most recent Adult Swim download compilation entitled Warm and Scratchy, and saw the band sitting comfortably alongside an impressive array of indie notables such as The Rapture, TV On The Radio, The Raveonettes, Fennesz, Broken Social Scene, The Liars, Asobi Seksu, Amusement Parks on Fire, Les Savy Fav and more. In addition to the six audio tracks, the CD has enhanced content featuring three videos! The alternate version of Hopeless and Unsung gets paired with an artistically shot video. I'm Not The Only One has been a fan-favorite over the past year, having been downloaded off the band's website and YouTube more than 5,000 times. The video is beautifully and professionally shot, and appears here on an official format for the first time. The disc is wrapped up with a funny, behind-the-scenes, home-shot video by the band about the recording of the penultimate album track Get On, Me.

Hommages (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 13TH)
PS, UK Remastered. Originally released in November 1981 on Les Disques du Crepuscule, Hommages was recorded in Leicester in February 1981 and produced by noted Belgian new music composer Wim Mertens. The album was conceived as a series of diverse homage's to other composers, which include Bill Evans (My First Homage), Ferruccio Busoni and Gustav Holst (The English Mail-Coach and The Vespertine Park) and Percy Grainger (Hi-Tremolo). Featured musicians included Andrew Bilham, Ronald Reah, Andrew Renshaw, Nigel Shipway, Dave Smith, John White and Marie Wilson, as well as Gavin Bryars himself on piano and vibraphone. The album is the only one that documents the important period between Bryars' early experimental music and later works from Medea onwards, as well as his enthusiasm for small composer/performer ensembles. The new 63 minute digital remaster of Hommages now includes two bonus tracks composed and recorded by Bryars during the same period: Danse Dieppoise, and the lengthy piano piece Out of Zaleski's Gazebo. The booklet features extensive notes by Gavin Bryars on the origin and performance of all six pieces, and preserves the original album cover artwork by Marc Borgers.

Castanets
In The Vines (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 23RD)
PS, US RAY RAPOSA of CASTANETS had almost finished his follow-up to "First Light's Freeze" (2005) when three men in strange masks mugged him at gunpoint in front of his home in Bedstuy, Brooklyn. Stealing Raposa's rent money, iPod and security, the three thieves climaxed a year of depression and nomadic, nocturnal dislocation. Not long after the mugging, Raposa completed "In The Vines." Appropriately, the album he was struggling to complete is based on a Hindu fable about being trapped in an inescapable fate, with death and the limitations of our physical lives closing in from all corners. In the fable story, "The Well of Life", a giant net stretched out by a giant woman surrounds a Brahman lost in the forest. The frantic Brahman runs in circles attempting to escape until he falls halfway down a pit and is entangled in vines. He discovers some beehives halfway between the flesh-hungry six-faced elephant at the top of the pit and the waiting serpent at the bottom. As bees buzz around the Brahman and rats gnaw at the vines holding him up, all he can do is gorge on the sweet honey. Heavy stuff, yes, but it isn't all peril, and darkness. The songs are sung with such intimacy and earnestness that "In The Vines" sways somewhere between the serpent, elephant, bees and rats, the honey representing a strange sense of hope and delight in the brief moments of beauty that sustain our lives.

Charalambides
Likeness (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 30TH)
PS, US This is a return to the spontaneous composition of previous records such as Houston & Union. Most all of the tracks on this release sprung forth after 'record' was pressed, & were fleshed out via overdubs, editing, & a malfunctioning space echo over the course of the next few months. This departs from the warm psych in favor of the lush & layered vocal strata of Christina's later solo works, & a chillier, more abrasive guitar sound.

Little Kingdom (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 6TH)
PS, US Vinyl edition of the Secretly Canadian released Little Kingdom lp. Limited edition of 500. "Citay really nail that rich acoustic-electric rolling tabla honeyn harmoney sound that all those heavy bands - Sabbath and Zeppelin, especially-used to do, back when all the best musicians were inspired by what the Incredible String Band were doing, and were still able (or willing) to express a feminine side to go with their preening barbarian or depressive wail aspects...This is an album without a sell-by date, with a song for every season...Monumental." ---ARTHUR MAGAZINE

Club 8
The Boy Who Couldn't Stop Dreaming (DELAYED, PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 13TH)
PS, SWEDEN Club 8 is finally back with their long awaited sixth album. "The boy who couldn't stop dreaming" is everything we'd ever hoped it would be - it's pop music at it's most profound, balancing perfectly between sunshine and melancholia. Twelve songs that'll make you sing along about death while dreaming of summer days. A glorious return to say the least. After having released three albums in just over two years time, very few expected they'd have to wait over four years for a new Club 8 album. Some even started to assume the band had split up. In May 2007 the band returned with the amazing Tropicalia-influenced "Whatever you want" which rapidly became a huge blog hit - top 10 most blogged songs according to music blog aggregator Elbo.ws The waiting's been so long we can almost, but just almost, talk about a comeback album. However, waiting's not always a bad thing. Not only has songwriter Johan Angergård released three albums with The Legends and one with Acid House Kings in the time in between - Club 8 has evolved in to one of the most personal and emotional bands around today. Not that previous albums have lacked emotional depth, that's far from the truth, but "The boy who couldn't stop dreaming" is truly different and a very very special album. The fleeting of life and time, and the nearness of death arrives in the shape of twelve perfect pop songs in a summer dress. It's mix of sunshine and melancholia is just as unique as it's profoundly moving.

4-Track Blues (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE TBA)
PS, US 4 song EP from some French kid(s?) making with the Memphis-sound garage-punk racket. The title cut and "Contaminated" are definitely 'Teenage Hate'-esque. PS, US Robin co-founded the experimental no-wave art band, DNA,and later collaborated with
varied artists (including Steven Brown of Tuxedomoon and filmmaker Jim Jarmusch) in the guise of his Dark Day project. His new solo explorations have been described by Devendra Banhart as "beguiling, powerful, hypnotic, mesmerizing, commanding, delicately unnerving, lilting, mellow, "and "tense as hell." A tiny treasurebox from a lost garden, this album finds Robin further exploring his unique world; one of delicate harp compositions, glissando & deep drones. Soundscapes for daydreamers of this & other worlds.

Davis, Ben Forrest
Roughs (ON SALE / PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 2007)
PS, US Re-release of 'Roughs' (on Velvet Crusher Ric Menck's Bird Song label) by former and founding member of the Los Angeles rock band Sugarcult. Here, Ben's doing his very own laid-back soft-rock thing, with a little dab of country & western, quite a departure from Sugarcult's highly-toughted tautness. Leaving behind a life of rock-n-roll excess, this enigmatic album qualifies as emancipation and exorcism, a collection of intimate, personal songs about love and self-destruction. Not so far afield from singer-songwriterly, orch-popping Parasol faves like Ken Stringfellow and his Posies, Kevin Tihista and his Red Terror, Jack Logan & Bob Kimbell, June & The Exit Wounds, and The Velvet Crush.

Davis, Betty
S-T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 6TH)
PS, US Arp is the most recent project of Alexis Georgopoulos, formerly of Tussle & The Alps. As an emblem of Alexis' commitment to "natural electronic music" (bridging the natural and electronic worlds), nearly all of In Light was recorded live. Very few loops were used -in fact, only one. This gesture was meant to bring back some of the rough (re:natural) edges that have been lost in so much "Electronic Music" today. In Light is a luminous album of warm, pulsing music. Like dreams or rich, saturated moments that make one lose sense of time, they are grainy snapshots, like old films of one's own experiences, elevated moments. Call it Pop Minimalism. Call it Cosmic Pop. Call it Cosmic Minimalism. Call it what you will.

Destroyalldreamers
Wish I Was All Flames (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 23RD)
PS, CANADA Destroyalldreamers was founded in the summer of 2002 in Montreal (Canada), by Eric Quach (guitar) & Shaun Doré (drums). Their first compositions were later embellished with the addition of Mathieu Grisé on guitar and Michèle Martin on bass, which led to the recording of their first full-length album "À Coeur Léger Sommeil Sanglant" by Patrick Lacharité (Below the Sea) in early 2004. It was released later the same year on Montreal's label Where Are My Records (Barzin, Epic45, Readymade, etc.). The following year, Destroyalldreamers rode the success of their critically acclaimed debut album, and is offered numerous studio projects to keep them busy. Eric Quach took over the band's production duties with the help of Shaun Doré, Shane Whitbread & Martin Valence. Most of the year was spent on pre-production, live performances and learning how to produce. The resulting studio tracks were used for the aforementioned projects that all saw their release in 2006, which included: a contribution to the shoegaze-homage compilation "Never Lose That Feeling, Volume 2" (other artists includes Hammock, Sing-Sing, etc.) released by ClubAC30 (UK); a contribution for the Propergol Y Colargol rework compilation "Ode to Roger" (other artists includes Eluvium, Giardini di Miro, Helios, etc.) released by Diesel Combustible/Autres Directions in Music (France); a 12" vinyl EP titled "Glare/Halo" released on Claire's Echo (USA), a Clairecords subsidiary label affiliated with the world widely recognized distributor Tonevendor which has proudly dubbed Destroyalldreamers' debut album "À Coeur Léger Sommeil Sanglant" as "The Best Shoegaze Album of 2004". Destroyalldreamers then finished the recording of their second full-length in the fall of 2006. Shortly after, the band has parted ways with bassist Michèle Martin and the release of the album was put aside. They took a short break the next year to pursue different musical and life projects. In the summer of 2007, Destroyalldreamers got back together as an official three-piece, with a close friend filling out on bass for live performances to ready the release of the aforementioned sophomore album entitled "Wish I Was All Flames", again on Where Are My Records in the fall of 2007. This new album is a more focused and mature record, filled with a wide array of sounds, with the added live energy that was developed since their beginnings. It also marks the end of a chapter for Destroyalldreamers' journey as the band has already expressed its wishes to explore new sonic territories. Pre-production for future releases is expected to start in the beginning of 2008

Digital Dance
Treatment (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 6TH)
PS, UK 16 tracks. The definitive anthology by cult Belgian post-punk band Digital Dance, a group often name-checked but seldom heard. One of the first and best new wave bands in Belgium, Digital Dance formed in Brussels in July 1978 by singer/guitarist Jerry WX and guitarist Stephan Barbery. The group, which also included keyboard player Jean-Marc Lederman, released their first single on Disques Vogue in late 1979. Digital dance recorded four singles - Radio-Activity, Faulty, Treatment and Three Meanings - as well as a self-titled cassette album, and another single under the name Jung. Although John Peel championed Faulty in the UK, and the band played several high profile live shows (including a residency at the Gibus Club in Paris and a support slot with Joy Division at Plan K in January 1980), Digital Dance failed to break through and split early in 1982. Various members subsequently played in groups as diverse as Fad Gadget, Marine, The Revenge, Kid Montana, Snowy Red, The Weathermen, The Names and Ink. Sadly singer Jerry died in 2000. As well as new artwork, the 70 minute CD also includes detailed sleeve notes and an assortment of period images and graphics.

Favorita
S-T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 23RD)
PS, CANADA Twelve years after it was recorded but never released, Popsicle Recordings will present the sole album from Swedish indiepop pioneers Favorita. The brainchild of former Beagle and current Metro Jets frontman Magnus Borjeson, Favorita fell foul of record company politics on the eve of this album's 1997 release and it never saw the light of day. The band split up, the album was forgotten. Popsicle Recordings didn't want Favorita to pass into obscurity. Sure, the album has circulated as a bootleg among discerning music lovers for five or six years, but an album this good deserves a shot at reaching a wider audience. So they dusted off the master tapes, added eight bonus cuts and both of the band's low-budget videos, unearthed photos from the two promo shoots the band did and coaxed some inspired sleeve notes from noted Swedish journalist and blogger (and former Beagle drummer) Anders Mildner. The result is the definitive Favorita experience. Everything you could want to know about this exceptional but criminally short-lived band, there on one disc.

Fine Arts Showcase, The
Sings Rough Bunnies (DELAYED, PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 2007)
PS, SWEDEN Third album from Gustaf Kjellvander's Fine Arts Showcase, and the follow-up to his 110% brilliant <a href="http://www.parasol.com/catalog/catalog.asp?zoomtitle=75849">'Radiola'</a>. The short version: TFAS covers 11 song by Swedish cult-twee-punk-lofi duo The Rough Bunnies. Highly recommended. The long version: This is an album of many stories. Gustaf Kjellvander and his friends in The Fine Arts Showcase have made a covers album, entirely based on songs from the Swedish, rather unknown, jangly, lo-fi band Rough Bunnies. Why is that? Let's make Gustaf himself explain: "I was first introduced to Anna Vermina and her cousin Frida, the founding members of Rough Bunnies and Inside Riot, through mutual friends. Frida gave me a CD-R just days before they were about to move to Berlin. About six months later I was looking for someone to rent my spare room. I bumped into Frida by chance, who told me she had moved back from Berlin to Malmö and needed a place to stay - so she moved in. I was already smitten by Inside Riot at this time, and when Frida played me the songs they had recorded in Berlin, along with the Rough Bunnies record C-sides, it blew me away. I played it to everyone who came over to my house. They became an obsession that carries on to this day. I knew I wanted the Fine Arts Showcase to cover their songs. The problem was that with a catalogue of songs as amazing as theirs it was hard to pick just one, so I came up with the idea that we should do an entire record instead (in the Merle Haggard sings Jimmy Rodgers tradition). And here it is: a musical love letter to two of my favorite songwriters, a celebration of the pop geniuses of the Vermina family. Rough Bunnies (and their twin group Inside Riot) have inspired me more than any other band this side of the millennium and this record is my way of thanking them. Rough Bunnies Saved My Life" - Gustaf Kjellvander

Gang Gang Dance
Rawwar (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 23RD)
PS, US "Rawwar" is the first glimpse of exactly what the band have been up to over this prolific year. Clocking in at just over twenty minutes and sprawled across three tracks, the release plays like a GANG GANG DANCE sampler of sorts; a taster for what is to come. "Rawwar" opens with "Nicoman": a live favorite from the last few years which has been refined in the studio.bombastic and dance-oriented it blends the bands affection for musical styles, propelling the listener through the four minutes of audible tribal chaos, while at the same time demonstrating GGD's talent for pop melody. "Oxygen Demo Riddim" finds the band improvising and building musical ideas into a dreamy hypnotic instrumental interlude. The final, almost cinematic, track is a studio composition entitled "The Earthquake That Frees Prisoners" which unfolds over ten minutes. This was painstakingly assembled in the studio and incorporates conversational dialog from their deceased band member Nathan Maddox interwoven into the bands compositional structure.

Glowstyx (a.k.a. Bong-Ra)
Class of 1992 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 23RD)
PS, UK We know what you're asking yourself, what's newer than new-rave? Well, what about OLD-RAVE! Just when you thought the true spirit of Rave was lost to Indy-rock poster boys, Glowstyx arrives with the smashing debut "Class of 1992"! Produced by rave-master Jason Köhnen, (AKA Bong-Ra), Glowstyx gives you good-ol' breakbeat Rave just like you remembered it, but somehow slightly updated and ready for the dance floor! Over 3 years in the making and meticulously constructed from an archive of over 4 gigabyte of old-school rave nostalgia, Glowstyx successfully manages to deliver 12 tracks that seemingly are warped here from over more than a decade ago. Somehow the charm, humor and excitement of Rave got lost in the growing popularity of synthetic repetitive dance music; focusing less on hooks, catchy melodies and simple song structures. But once you hear Glowstyx, you'll realize the power of the music itself is here to stay! Bring back the high pitch vocals! Bring back the piano breakdowns, "mentasm" and rolling breaks! The old-school Rave revival is here, and let's all drop some E to celebrate it! About Cock Rock Disco: Cock Rock Disco was founded by Jason Forrest (AKA DJ Donna Summer) and was established to release amazing new music by a new generation of producers from all over the world. Please look for upcoming releases; they are great, we promise.

Hawkwind
Self-Titled [re-issue] (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 23RD)
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Produced by former Pretty Things guitarist Dick Taylor, Hawkwind's first album was rightfully compared to Pink Floyd's early sound: an appealing conglomeration of hippie rock grooves and interplanetary guitar trips set to the phosphorescent wandering of Dik Mik's electronics and Nik Turner's cool sax playing. Hawkwind may not have been their most lucrative album, but it's where it all began. Hawkwind's initial galactic blues-rock sound is based on Dave Brock's guitar playing, rising smoke-like through the haze of lyrical space funk... Hawkwind's sound indeed solidified as their career moved upward through the '70s, but their first album magnificently introduces the starting point of what was going to be a long and peculiar journey."

Hefner
Breaking God's Heart (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 13TH)
PS, UK When first released in July 1998 Hefner's debut album; 'Breaking God's Heart' was quite out of step with other guitar bands of the time. The sparse, folksy arrangements and dry, scratchy production was at odds with the ambitious, string laden brit pop of the time. Although Hefner had the tunes to win them support from the NME and Steve Lamacq, their idiosyncratic, leftfield approach meant their most loyal supporter was going to be John Peel, recording 7 sessions for him in their short career. Lead singer; Darren Hayman's primary influences were folk, country and the American lo-fi indie of the time. Hayman rejected an American singing style in favour of his own Thames estuary accent and sang carefully observed songs about lost love in East London and Essex. Hefner never crossed into the mainstream but they had an unusually loyal following who still believe them to be the best of their kind. This smaller, intricate, personal music is missed today. This release expands the album to a 2 CD set and includes all of the B-sides and associated singles, the rare first two singles, the long deleted Hefner Soul EP as well as unreleased recordings. Hefner's other 3 albums will be released in similar formats through out 2007 and 2008.

Hepburns, The
Something Worth Stealing (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 6TH)
PS, US CD digipak with 24 page booklet in English & Japanese. Pearly guitar pop in the finest UK tradition, albeit skewed sideways by cinematic caprices and elliptical narrative. Probably the Hepburns' lightest album, "Something Worth Stealing" was written as a romantic fling with no skeletons in the closet...well, unusually few skeletons by Hepburns standards, discounting the up-tempo duet with the dead guy who comes back to woo a former lover, the ghostly coal mine choir in the jazzy shadows on the ditty about the strongman's cape, and, perhaps, the ode to Scooby-Doo's Velma. This album is more a celebration of joyrides, spring storms, dinosaur incisors, winter fashions, boho wannabes, humdrum and conundrum, the occasional poisoned dart, and the use of the word "penultimate." SWS showcases the blossoming of the Hepburns' association with White & White (brass and flute, respectively) which started halfway through the sessions for the last album. In addition to the Hepburns' trademark organ and vibraphone riff-laden, jazz- and ska-tinged jangle, topped with words that could have only been penned by Matt "all Welshmen are Liars" Jones, the new album features the song everyone has been waiting to hear since the last album: "The Last Thing I Saw Before I Said Goodbye." Digipak plus 24 page illustrated booklet with lyrics and commentaries by Jones in English (with Japanese translations by the esteemed Jun Kurihara). File under fiction. For fans of: el Records, The Lucksmiths, The Monochrome Set, The Smiths, The Specials, Momus and Jake Thackray. The Hepburns tour the US in November 2007 and Scandinavia in December 2007.
