Parasol New Arrivals • September 16, 2008

Hey friends,

Yes indeed, it's about that time to hip you to the jam-packed releases that have graced our walls early this week. It just so happens that a little birdie told me that Unbunny's "Sensory Underload: Uncertain Trks 1996-2008" disc will be arriving at Parasol HQ today and let me tell you sumthin, that there anticipation's killing me.

I also heard through the grapevine that it has been a while since you've done something nice for yourself. How can this possibly be true? Why don’t give yourself a treat, give yourself a laugh, apologize to your pocketbook later, and put the mundane tasks of daily life on pause for a spell.

Need a nudge in the right direction? All right, let us tackle this one together, shall we? Be sure to check the following off of your list: Unbunny, Mogwai, Vivian Girls, Noagon, Arab On Radar, Conifer, and Raglani.

Word is bond,

Roy

Roy's Vinyl Pick of the Week

Maniac's Dream "Zanzibar" LP $13.00 (Arbor)
Finland is the epicenter of collective music-making. Under the name Maniac's Dream, members of a variety of Finnish bands such as Avarus, Fricara Pacchu, Kemialliset Ystävät, and more come together to create blown-out free rock (not your typical stoner guitar jams). Their unique/bizarre approach to music-making constantly questioning the construction/deconstruction of sound creates songs at times recalling the electro-acoustic clatter drone of Avarus crossed with tribal rhythms and intergalactic guitar zones. Total sonic freedom with a punk ethos directly influenced by a trip to Zanzibar prior to recording this record (which is a reissue of the long sold-out tape originally released on Lal Lal Lal in 2006). In an edition of 450 records on light blue vinyl with printed labels and full color pro-printed fold-over sleeves with art by Benjamin Bergman and an insert.

Alps, The
III
PS, UK Although III might be the third album from San Francisco trio The Alps, it marks their first studio-based record and a fresh direction for the psychedelic supergroup. Made up of Tarentel mainman Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, ex-Tussle member Alexis Georgopoulos (better known as ARP), and ex-Troll member Scott Hewicker, there is a deft amount of skill on display as the three rip through eight tracks of sizzling spiritual bliss. Comparisons here are easy to bring up -- Popol Vuh, Ennio Morricone and Serge Gainsbourg spring to mind for starters, as the band toss and tangle through thick drum breaks and reverberating, sun-drenched guitar lines. III feels like a lost soundtrack to some crumbling Italian surrealist classic with its pounding bass lines and swirling synths. The finest excesses of progressive rock and the leanest intricacies of the psychedelic folk scene have been splashed together with a distinct, dusty funk overlook to produce something which is totally out of time. The Alps show us that there's more to psychedelia than meets the eye.

Alvarez, Lesser, Gonzalez
Why Is Bear Billowing
PS, US A couple years ago, Baltimore's Alvarez was playing stripped down electro-pop (60s French chanteuse style) in the band Cache Cache. Other projects include playing guitar in the drone-tinged country-folk group The Tall Grass, as well as an electronic side project called The Ruby Stallion Ensemble. On this release, Lesser and his acoustic guitar craft some of the prettiest folk tunes you'll hear this year. He delivers his songs with a sense of whimsical earnestness, and has garnered comparisons to Nick Drake, John Fahey, and Donovan.

Arab On Radar
Sunshine for Shady People
PS, US An ingenious plague, Arab on Radar was genetically engineered to avoid easy detection. Operating under the guise of a musical group, the band traveled via an underground network. Their music was a sonic assault as they toured from city to city. For Shady People is a document, alive and rootless, showing a band that has no semblance to daddy's "Rock 'n' Roll" The story of this band will infect you.

Autistic Daughters
Uneasy Flowers
PS, GERMANY Released on CD in March of 2008 on Kranky, Uneasy Flowers is the second album by New Zealand's Autistic Daughters, the intercontinental trio of Dean Roberts (guitar, vocals), Martin Brandlmayr (percussion, computer) and Werner Dafeldecker (guitar, bass). It is also the fourth in a series of records in which Roberts, having begun in more abstract territory in New Zealand's mid-1990s "free noise" ferment, has embraced song, lyric and voice as vessels for topographic and psychoanalytic tracings of the impacts of territory and nomadism on the subject. This is reflected by the shape-shifting nature of the outfit: while Autistic Daughters (whose name comes from a lyric from their first record Jealousy And Diamond) are resolutely a trio, they also work in cinematic format, with ancillary players behind the trio's complex, worm-turning arrangements: in this instance, Chris Abrahams of The Necks, Martin Siewert and Valerio Tricoli. With Uneasy Flowers, Roberts traces the internal and external workings of one protagonist: or, rather, a protagonist who "contains multitudes," a Whitmanian figure that dissolves the unified self. Rather, this character, "Rehana," embodies multiplicity and fragmentation in order to both a) address loss and b) aim toward transfiguration, transcendence. There are traces in the lyrics -- traces of addiction and desire, myth and transformation -- that are obliquely reflected in the music's structure, its uneasy tension between the pop song (the "moment") and experiment (the "process"). In some ways, it reminds of the structural, loop-based cinema of figures like Malcolm LeGrice: taking one moment and stretching it, the better to capture its nuances and to draw out all the repressed material caught in the mise-en-scène, the hidden, cloaked content that erupts when your world spirals out of your control and gets caught in webs of interpersonal politic. The move from intimacy to the capture of the "greater picture" enacted by both lyric and music here resembles a camera dollying out, a shift of perspective unsettling for its vertigo-inducing qualities. Experimental deconstructionism within a pop framework that is contemplative, well-crafted, and gracefully unsettling.

Barr, Brad
The Fall Apartment: Instrumental Guitar
PS, US This is guitarist Brad Barr's solo debut, The Fall Apartment: Instrumental Guitar. As a member of Northeast-based band The Slip, Brad's guitar prowess has always been notable, but his true gifts and distinct musical voice are on full display throughout this solo guitar album. A heady set of original compositions is complimented by such diverse covers as Maria La O by legendary Cuban musician Ernesto Lecuona, Kurt Cobain's 'Heart Shaped Box,' and Le Trio Ferret's 'Gin Gin.' The introspective tone of the album recalls such autumnal, overlooked loner guitar gems as Lenny Breau's Cabin Fever or Richard Crandell's In The Flower Of Our Youth, while staking out a thoroughly modern approach to solo guitar here in the late '00s.

Black Nielson
Current Sunlight
PS, AUSTRALIA Beautiful 2005 album from now defunct British troubadours. Mike now plays in LTI band Co-pilgrim. At just under 5 years since the inception of the band, Black Nielson has established an impressive reputation, both on record and as a live act. The modest level of success achieved by the band can be traced in a steady trajectory from noble beginnings on the south coast of England, formed by principle songwriter Michael Gale... And that trajectory shows no sign of abating.

Black President
S-T
PS, US For Los Angeles-based soul-inflected punk band all it took was one song, penned by guitarist & founder Charlie Paulson (GOLDFINGER) titled "Last Fucking Hope," to light the fuse on a whole new musical powderkeg. With the addition of Christian Martucci (CHELSEA SMILES & Dee Dee Ramone's band), Roy Mayorga (NAUSEA & SOULFLY) and east-coast hardcore veteran Jason Christopher the band plays aggressive music that acknowledges American 60s soul. Look for the band to explode on Vans Warped Tour 08 & to tour extensively throughout 2008

Bound Stems
Family Afloat
PS, US This expresses a crucial personal transition & a collective one. While BOUND STEMS quit their day-jobs to tour relentlessly throughout 2006 in support of their previous album (one that garnered praise from the likes of Rolling Stone, The New York Times, Alternative Press, URB & Chicago Tribune), the band returned home ready for new challenges, & made the communal decision to return to the more stable life of work weeks & strong roots. It was a choice that also ultimately made the concept of home central to this 2008 album. The songs sound like preparation: the family has grown now, to include new ones being formed in Chicago. But there's no settling down in these songs: family life is raw & confusing, as uncomfortable & unexpected & rewarding as crucial.

Brokaw, Chris
Canaris
PS, US Solo album by CHRIS BROKAW (past & present bands incl. COME, CODEINE,
PULLMAN, FFLASHLIGHTS, DIRTMUSIC, THURSTON MOORE & THE NEW WAVE BANDITS, THE NEW YEAR). This is Chris' 5th album & was recorded in June 2008 in both Hoboken, NJ & Cambridge, MA. This is an instrumental album entirely for solo acoustic guitar - the 1st half "straight acoustic," while the 2nd half is acoustic plugged into amps & pedals. Feat. a cover of Vlad Tepes' 13 min. epic "Drink the Poetry of Celtic Disciple" - as well as the title track, an 18 min. drone/feedback piece. Overall, kinda reminds us John Fahey and Pullman.

Cale, John
Process OST
PS, US Originally released in 2005, Process is an original soundtrack recording by John Cale and marks the beginning of his creative relationship with avant-garde filmmaker CS Leigh. The film, featuring Beatrice Dalle and Guillaume Depardieu, was described by Variety as being "one of the most adventurous works" screened at 2004's Berlinale," with Leigh displaying "a take-no-prisoners arthouse rigor." With Cale being "no stranger to taking music in experimental directions" (Rolling Stone), the coming together of director and composer was a natural and inspired union. Leigh explains: "When I was working on Process in the earliest stages I knew I wanted to work with Cale. He has made groundbreaking contributions to difficult cinema and understands the architecture of film sound better than anyone I know. Cale gives you more than music. He gives you a sound landscape that permeates every frame and resounds beyond the borders." Cale's work for Process is a haunting, discordant collection of mostly solo piano pieces, described by the Edinburgh International Film Festival catalog as being a "menacing and incendiary score." Cale has created a sound that perfectly compliments the radical approach of CS Leigh, of whom Le Figaro writes: "His aesthetic sense is taken to extremes. His incisive images disturb, shock. You cannot stay indifferent watching Process." Continuing in this vein, the soundtrack is at once ominous, provocative yet poignant.

PS, US The 11 songs here channel a temporal sense of place & hope over despair. W/the wounded perseverance of Karen Carpenter & the vulnerable, tough-as-nails courage of Heart's Ann Wilson, SARA LUCAS' voice is rich & unforgettable. caUSE co-MOTION
I Lie Awake
PS, US Following a series of increasingly rad singles on labels like What's Yr Rupture? and the band's own Can't Cope, caUSE co-MOTION! bring their patented reverb-happy pop to Slumberland and it just fits like a glove. Like their previous records, I Lie Awake is produced to crash-boom-bang perfection by Tim Barnes (Rogers Sisters, Sonic Youth). A blazing chaos of jangle, clatter, and thump - busted strings and broken hearts. Hummable tunes to scratch that TVPs/Pastels/Comet Gain itch, with more than a dash of 14 Iced Bears and Desperate Bicycles in there too. Three doses of pure DIY pop pleasure, straight from the garage to your ears, feet and heart. caUSE co-MOTION! have been playing at gigs and parties around NYC and across the country since 2002, sharing stages with folks like Love Is All, Tyvek and Vivian Girls while developing their unique sound and a rabid, enthusiastic group of fans. I Lie Awake might be their most concentrated blast yet, and is an ideal taster for the compilation CD featuring all of the bands singles, due out on Slumberland later this fall.

Chisel, Cory & the Wandering Sons
Cabin Ghosts EP
PS, US Major-label debut EP for awesome Midwest band featuring Parasol duo Elanors. Six songs serve as a teaser to their upcoming full-length. Based in Appleton, WI with his band, The Wandering Sons, Chisel's six song EP, "Cabin Ghosts" reflects the inspiration of his upbringing with a spare Americana-saturated sound that is its own exquisite blend of folk-country and Delta blues. With his voice full of soul and longing, Chisel's expressive vocals and the Sons' loosely orchestrated, impeccable playing emerge fully formed yet somehow familiar and as confident in its sonics as in its lyrical echoes of existential grace and mystery.

Chunklet
#20
PS, US The final installment in a trilogy of EP's recorded for Acuarela. This is the most commercial & (shockingly) danceable thing they've ever recorded. Part Bacharach, part Television, part Orange Juice, the E.P. shares the pristine clarity, light & shade of 'God Save the Clientele', but adds a new element of summer pop perfection. This is the group as a hazily remembered 1970s cartoon series, all distanced off-key colours; imaginary summer hits, radio waves
beamed in from a dream-discotheque.

Clientele, The
That Night, A Forest Grew
PS, SPAIN This is the third, and last, of a trilogy of E.P.s the Clientele have recorded for Acuarela. They have always used the Acuarela E.P.s as a way to stretch out between albums, to create a through-the-looking-glass version of the band that shadows the better-known history of their albums. 'Ariadne' experimented with drones and minimalism; 'The Lost Weekend' stretched the foggy sound of their debut to epic proportions. In contrast "That Night, a Forest Grew' is the most commercial and -shockingly- danceable thing they've ever recorded. Part Bacharach, part Television, part Orange Juice, the E.P. shares the pristine clarity, light and shade of 'God Save the Clientele', but adds a new element of summer pop perfection. This is The Clientele as a hazily remembered 1970s cartoon series, all distanced off-key colors; imaginary summer hits, radio waves beamed in from a dream-discotheque.

Coil/The New Blockaders/Vortex Campaign
The Melancholy Mad Tennant
PS, US Limited edition of 500 copies. Limited edition of 500 copies on 180 gram vinyl. Originally released on cassette in 1984 and then on cd in an edition of 500. In 1984 Vortex Campaign invited Coil and The New Blockaders to collaborate. The result, unofficially referred to as "Dolbied", was released on cassette in an edition of 50. The release has since gone on to become legendary, showcasing two of the most influential groups in the scene at the early stages of their development. "The Melancholy Mad Tenant" is an authorized release, sanctioned by all three groups. Formed in 1983 the output of Coil has ranged from the avant-garde, to experimental neoclassical, to extended excursions into pure electronica. Many bands and composers have cited Coil as an influence. Coil were mainly a studio group, but in 2000 they commenced a successful series of tours that proved to be extremely remarkable events. The New Blockaders began in 1982 with the release of the debut LP "Changez Les Blockeurs" which is cited by many as a defining moment in the history of noise music. TNB have gone on to influence a generation of artists from Japanese noise-maestro Merzbow to noise punks Wolf Eyes.

Flying High was a simple affair sporting songs that spanned Paul's musical career and landscape, from the Beat-ish power chords of Rock n Roll Shoes and More Than Yesterday, to the all out melodic pop of Helen to the roots rocking Will You Be A Women the record encompasses all the facets of Paul's writing ability, showcased with a simple and straight forward production style.

Conifer
Crown Fire
PS, US Though Conifer has received quite a bit of critical praise they've somehow managed to live off the grid for the past six years. With "Crown Fire", Conifer is finally getting the exposure they deserve. Mixing post-rock, kraut-rock, metal and pschychedlia they have created this relentlessly driving and hypnotic masterpiece. Crown Fire's only vocals are from Oxbow's Eugene Robinson fronting the albums final 13 minute epic. Conifer has been writing primarily instrumental music with a lawless take on the styles from which they've taken cue. New content is found by way of augmenting brutality and suspense with time. Conifer seems to reckon with the notions of bands like Enemymine, Mogwai, or Grails while taking an approach toward their music that's entirely meditative (as opposed to premeditated). Minimal, ethereal passages are narcotically lengthened and crescendos of distortion are sustained well beyond the boundaries adhered to by many of their peers.

Like Dawson's previous releases, "Alphabutt", succeeds by being tender and vulnerable, silly and raw while maintaining the intimacy and sense of community that has become so special to both fans and critics. Clocking in at 27 minutes, "Alphabutt" effortlessly showcases Dawson's powerful talent for storytelling.

Dear, Matthew
Dog Days: The Robsoul Remixes
PS, US The Robsoul Remixes is a cross-continental project that mines the connections between Matthew Dear's precision techno-pop and the French label's expansive funk. DJ Sneak engineers "Dog Days" into an ebullient house romper. Robsoul boss Phil Weeks revives the unforgettable disco string sweeps of the original and stretches them tight against a crackling, frog-hiccup loop. Finally, Chris Carrier presents an upbeat, verdant minimal track, building micro-clips of bongo strikes and hi-hat hisses around seductive fades and vocal stutters.

Desveaux, Angela
Mighty Ship
PS, US Follow up release to her 2006 debut. This album borrows its title from a traditional folk ballad about the Titanic, but it also refers to DESVEAUX's Grandmother, which whom she is very close & who sadly lost her 1st husband at sea. Ever since the release of her debut album & after much touring w/ Bruce Cockburn, Archer Prewitt, Califone & Howe Gelb - Desveaux is now a much more confident bandleader, which is apparent on this album. It is a bold step for her - the song writing is assured &, as always, her voice & range takes center stage - very much influenced & informed by artists like Chrissy Hynde, Wayne Coyne, Neil Young, Gillian Welch & Lucinda Williams.

Donkeys, The
Living On The Other Side
PS, US If THE DONKEYS' backstory contains those top-down cars and suntanned utopian surf tableaus, it also contains the malaise and the escape fantasies familiar to all suburban kids of the 80s and 90s. Part of this magic comes from the fact that there's no artifice to the Donkeys' songs, from the matter-of-fact breakup blues of "Boot on the Seat" to the playful recollections of a late, drunken night narrated on "Nice Train." These are everyday lives in the postmodern world expressed with a deep respect for classic songs from the 70s through the 90s -- for spacey grooves and soulful, jangly swagger -- that elevates the subject matter beyond the ordinary. "Living on the Other Side", the band's second album, is not meant to hit you over the head with a flamboyant single - instead, imagine Ray Davies jamming with the Byrds, or a Gene Clark-fronted Buffalo Springfield -- and you'll get a sense of the tradition that informs this band.

Durrett, Liz
Outside Our Gates
PS, US Produced and arranged by indie rock icon, Eric Bachmann (Archers Of Loaf, Crooked Fingers, Azure Ray), "Outside Our Gates" represents a sonic leap forward for Liz Durrett. Her spare, acoustic downbeats have been supplanted by a more textured and diverse orchestra of sounds. A virtual cacophony of instruments are here (strings, wurlitzers, accordions, grand space pianos, and marching drums) and Bachmann's score somehow harmonizes them seamlessly to provide the perfect setting for Liz's near stream of consciousness writings and soft, pitch-perfect voice. Additional performances by Vic Chesnutt, Brian Causey (Man Or Astro-Man?), Amanda Kapousouz (Tin Cup Phrophette), and members of Ham1.

Eleh
Floating Frequencies/Intuitive Synthesis Volume 3
PS, US Deluxe pressing of 500 copies packaged in letterpressed covers designed by Important and printed by 23rd Parallel. Mastered by James Plotkin. Hand numbered/hand assembled. Eleh's Intuitive Synthesis/Floating Frequencies Volume 3 is the third release in their Intuitive Synthesis series (Volume 2 was released over a year ago) and it is being released simultaneously with an Eleh/Pauline Oliveros split release. Both are limited edition and LP only. Meticulously minimal analog drone. Eleh was formed to specifically to pay tribute to early experimental minimalist pioneers especially La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Eliane Radigue, Pauline Oliveros and Charlemagne Palestine. Using an enormous vintage modular analog synthesizer, a battery of glowing HP tube test oscillators and occasionally guitar/piano, Eleh creates highly minimal and deeply spiritual pure analog drone music with emphasis on the physical ultra-low end. Incorporating tones as low as .05 hz (well below the range of human hearing) Eleh is as much of a physical experience as it is an audio one. This engaging record was created as a tool for meditation and to be heard/felt correctly the listener must be sitting with ears at speaker height at least 7 feet away from the speakers. Eleh/Pauline Oliveros
Split
PS, US Eleh: The Beauty Of The Steel Skeleton Pauline Oliveros: Drifting Depths Important Records quite pleased to be presenting this split release consisting of two new drone works from Pauline Oliveros and Eleh. Oliveros, an early American minimalist who has pioneered the technique of Deep Listening, has created a new work exlcusively for this release. Drifting Depths is a new improvised piece made on a harmonica being processed through Pauline's Expanded Instrument System. Eleh's side, also exclusive to this vinyl only release, is super slow melodic drone full of stillness, tension & relief. Vinyl only, handmade and handassembled letterpressed jackets. Limited edition. A central figure in post-war electronic art music, Oliveros is one of the original members of the San Francisco Tape Music Center (along with Morton Subotnick, Ramon Sender, Terry Riley, and Anthony Martin), which was the resource on the U.S. west coast for electronic music during the 1960s. The Center later moved to Mills College, where she was its first director, and is now called the Center for Contemporary Music. Oliveros often improvises with the Expanded Instrument System, an electronic signal processing system she designed, in her performances and recording. Eleh was formed to specifically to pay tribute to early experimental minimalist pioneers especially La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Eliane Radigue, Pauline Oliveros and Charlemagne Palestine. Using an enormous vintage modular analog synthesizer, a battery of glowing HP tube test oscillators and occasionally guitar/piano, Eleh creates highly minimal and deeply spiritual pure analog drone music with emphasis on the physical ultra-low end. Fisher, Morgan
The Hybrid Kids 1+2: Two Collections of Classic Mutants
PS, UK Before Miniatures, there was Hybrid Kids. Take a collection of classics by musical behemoths The Beatles, Kate Bush, The Sex Pistols, The Righteous Brothers, Brotherhood Of Man and suchlike, and perform them in a style as diametrically opposite to the original as one can imagine. Therein lies the manifesto that brought the world the wonderfully twisted take on pop music that is Hybrid Kids. Being the first album recorded in Fisher s own Pipe Studios (actually his Notting Hill bedsit, fact fans), Hybrid Kids was conceived as a compilation album featuring a variety of spoof 'bands' hailing from the very real but somewhat obscure Peabody (a town in Kansas, USA) each would perform their own take on a well known number, with wildly unpredictable results. Equally predictably, when the self styled Collection Of Classic Mutants was announced and discussed in the press, a large number of hipsters and music buffs believed every word and eagerly anticipated its release Phrases such as terrifying work of genius, downright creepy and nearly obscene were commonplace in reviews of the record, and it quickly passed into folklore as a work of unique originality and the kind of sonic experimentation rarely applied to such mainstream material. A true classic a fact highlighted by the media interest in its imminent reissue in combination with its equally intriguing sister album. So, having caused something of a stir with a warped compilation of material performed by non-existent acts from a far off town nobody had ever heard of, where does one go next? The answer, in retrospect, seems obvious the tried and tested Christmas album, performed by the self same Hybrid Kids. Claws (released a year after its predecessor), saw Morgan tackle such Xmas favorites as Deck The Halls, Good King Wenceslas and Happy Xmas (War Is Over) in his own inimitable style, with equally unorthodox results. Perhaps not one to play when Granny drops by for her pre Xmas lunch glass of sherry, but definitely something any discerning audio adventurer should find a few moments for amongst their festive celebrations. Both albums are accompanied by bonus tracks and have been retouched for 2008 by Morgan himself.

All The Way
PS, US "All The Way", the debut full-length from GROWING on THE SOCIAL REGISTRY, concludes a epic trip. Through six tracks Kevin Doria and Joe DeNardo complete the conceptual arc initiated on their 2006 album, "Color Wheel". Jackie-O Motherfucker
Freedomland
PS, UK In the late summer of 2006, Jackie-O Motherfucker- the infamous, shape-shifting, free rock constellation- were in their hometown of Portland OR. Preparing for a cross-country tour of the USA when it was discovered that two of the four touring members, at the time, could not make the trip, due to financial situations, and problems getting away from jobs and domesticity. After some discussion, and re-grouping, they decided to continue on with the tour, and placed a call to Eva Salens (Inca Ore) who was doing agricultural work in the hills of Humboldt County, Ca. She eagerly accepted the challenge of conspiring with the group, lending her considerable skills as a vocalist, and it was decided that they would all meet at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, where the group were scheduled for their first appearance supporting the Dirty Three. There they would begin- unrehearsed in this formation, and in front of a large audience. The plans to perform material from their newest release "flags of the sacred harp" were scraped, and the band launched into a free form set of improvised trance inducing, punk inspired, psychedelic rock, which became the framework of the new music they would develop together over the next few years. With a backpack full of California's finest, the newly created touring group- consisting now of Eva Salens, Tom Greenwood, Danny Sasaki, and Nick Bindeman, continued on to Los Angeles, over the deserts, and through America. Freedomland, is a document of this trip, as well as another American tour, which the same band set off on the following spring... the record consists of location recordings, captured live, and mastered in the UK. The songs were created from the spirit of improvisation- and honed true by performing nightly in dive bars, music halls, and art galleries across America. The music is a testament to creation, brave and searching, and an endorsement of the abstraction that lies hidden in the footprints of all great music... Salens' vocal delivery is raw and honest, the words flow from conversations, to streams of sub-conscious conjuring, and prayer. Guitars alternately soar into cloud-scapes, and battle like free-jazz saxophones, propelling the group into new terrain nightly, while the percussion of Danny Sasaki alternates between exploratory and dead-solid motoric. The collection was edited by Tom Greenwood, from dozens of live recordings, and captures a rare moment in the bands long, and confusing history. It is truly the music of everyday life- birthed each night in a new form, from musicians who put great faith in each other, under awesome strain at times, to project modern music, with soul.

Jurado, Damien
Caught In The Trees
PS, US "Caught In the Trees" marks the dawn of a new era for DAMIEN JURADO. It may not be a huge departure from some of his past albums musically, but lyrically Jurado has taken a giant leap forward and there is no turning back. Best known for his dark yet fragile first person fictional tales, Jurado now unlocks the door and invites us into his own enigmatic world with an energy and intensity that is all consuming. Jurado took a full year to make this record, longer than ever before, as he ran away from and eventually found himself in his own songs. He subsequently found refuge in sharing the songs with his closest friends and bandmates, Eric Fisher and Jenna Conrad. Having walked alongside him through this most challenging journey, the songs that came out of it are as much theirs as his. Jurado, Fisher, and Conrad collaborated on the compositions - some much more rocking than Jurado fans are used to, but ever as intense - and pulled in producers Kory Kruckenberg and Casey Foubert to contribute their own unique stylings. Recording started in the summer months and the sweltering heat, and wrapped in the freezing temps of winter. (It is clear on first listen that two distinct seasons are represented through "Caught In the Trees" - an accidental metaphor perhaps?) There was laughter and there was introspection, and the result is a record that Jurado loyalists will find was worth the wait. And perhaps a reason to listen for those who have yet to give this bedraggled storyteller a chance.

Kjersem, Hilde Marie
A Killer For That Ache
PS, NORWAY This is the first solo release for Norway's singer/songwriter Hilde Marie Kjersem. Kjersem was born and brought up in the northwest coastal town of lesund, with seven brothers and sisters and a father with a passion for science fiction and Kenny Rogers. Like many of her young contemporaries in Norway, she studied at the Music Conservatory. She has released two albums, Red Shoes Diary (2004) with her now-disbanded TUB Quartet and Twelve O'Clock Tales (2005), a duo album of standards with jazz guitarist Jon Eberson. The last couple of years, she has worked on A Killer For That Ache, the first proper album under her own name. Far from being a jazz album or your typical melancholy Nordic singer-songwriter album, Kjersem names some of her inspirations to be David Lynch, Roger Rabbit, Finn Graff (legendary Norwegian newspaper illustrator), Danny Elfman, Robert Wyatt, José Saramago, Kate Bush and Tim Burton. With her present band, including Shining main-man Jørgen Munkeby, she has delivered some stunning performances that have been extremely well-received in the Norwegian press. A Killer For That Ache can be called a concept album of sorts, in the way that Kjersem sets out to critique the media by stepping into various disguises and characters using comments, facts, lies, repetitions, assumptions, exaggerations, humor, irony and absurd observations on things that might have happened, things that never happened and things that never will. Not surprisingly, the result is an eclectic selection of songs that are completely indescribable. Let us just say it is pop music with many twists, making it a dramatic, beautiful, mysterious, seductive, intricate, fascinating and unique musical ride. Hilde Marie Kjersem (vocals, keyboards, autoharp), Jørgen Munkeby (saxophones, clarinets, flute, guitar, vocals), Torbjørn Folke Zetterberg (bass, guitars, banjo, Moog, Rhodes, vocals), Sjur Miljeteig (trumpet, vocals), Peder Kjellsby (drums, percussion, piano).

Kossoff With Black Cat Bones, Paul
Paul's Blues
PS, UK This double CD contains the earliest known recordings of the UK's Paul Kossoff (Free), whose tragic death at 25 in 1976 robbed the rock world of one of its finest-ever blues guitarists. Taped at rehearsals with Black Cat Bones in London in 1967, the raw, lo-fi tracks find the teenaged Kossoff already a master of his instrument. Accompanied by musicians including Derek and Stuart Brookes (later to form the legendary Leaf Hound), and featuring a guest appearance from Paul Rodgers (later to form Free with Kossoff), the recordings are of considerable historical importance. They are released here for the very first time, along with a booklet featuring rare photographs, full liner notes and an introduction from the band's drummer, Frank Perry, making the album an essential purchase for all serious rock fans.

LA JR
17 Animales
PS, SPAIN The best unheralded Spanish (or European?) band of all times, LA JR, are led as usual by Frank, Rafa and Borja as the ultimate Dadaist-pop ensemble. There is no exact definition for the word 'dada' and there are no exact words to describe the multifariousness of LA JR. "17 animales" is a work of dark atmospheric lounge, trance Kraut-Rock groove or just anti-jazz-folk, as we like to name it: THIS is to music what assemblage is to art; an overlaying of diverse, motley materials; it sounds like porcelain, wood, glass and it squeaks even though it doesn't sound like squeaking. Pendulum-like piano playing, husky basses, humming from the tide of the keyboards, every element bursts into bubbles. "17 animales" an ultra contemporary album about Death, Sex and the slight possibility of turning Life into Art and back again.

Lili Z
The Two Of Us
PS, US After previous achievements with Volt, The Splash Four, The No-Talents, and her past collection of home tapes, Lili Z. comes back with fifteen new 8-track cassette living room recordings. Twisted into shapes that vaguely resemble seam-bursting garage punk, the songs' (thirteen originals and reworkings with Lili Z. lyrics of a Bela Bartok piece and an old Rondos chestnut) charm lies in their unpredictability. Sometimes it's a little late-'70s punk rock, sometimes it's catchy, metronome-like electropunk, sometimes it's pure guitar noise freakouts, and sometimes it's experimental tooling around. B.ut most of all, it's pure Lili Z., recorded at home at her most intimate.

A sort of musical diary, The Two of Us comes with a stunning, full-color gatefold sleeve of Lili's collages and meticulous illustrations for each song. This vinyl edition is limited to 1000.

"Dark-sounding but maintaining a ... playful energy, blazingly fast at times yet with plenty of ... slow-simmer brooding and crawling. Lili's made a better sounding record in her home than most full bands could hope to achieve in a studio."
--Terminal Boredom

"Lili knocks out fifteen new tracks of sophisticated raw minimalism, carefully balancing menacing rip-saw guitar and pulverizing drum machine crashes with intricate songs

Louvin, Charlie
Steps To Heaven
PS, US Features 10 traditional gospel classics including 2 Louvin Brothers songs. The release will be followed by Charlie Louvin Sings Murder Ballads & Disaster Songs. Both albums were produced, recorded and mixed by Mark Nevers (Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Andrew Bird, Bobby Bare Sr.). Instead of hanging back at age 81, Charlie has instead chosen to challenge himself. Steps To Heaven was recorded live with a gospel choir comprised of three sisters, journeyman gospel pianist Derrick Lee, and Chris Scruggs, adding doghouse bass and electric guitar. Louvin had never recorded with black gospel musicians before, and in doing so discovered a new musical path. Charlie remarks, 'I did things on the gospel record I had no idea I could do. I'd be thinking along the way, 'How can I do things I've never done before?' And I did it.' 2007 saw Louvin celebrate his 80th birthday amidst a swirl of activity around the release of his first studio album in ten years, Charlie Louvin. Grammy-nominated for 'Best Traditional Folk Album,' the disc features George Jones, Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, Will Oldham, and Elvis Costello, among others. Charlie toured and recorded with Lucinda Williams, made a video for the song 'Ira,' released a field recording of one of his many in-store performances, Live at Shake It Records, played over 100 concert dates sharing stages with Ryan Adams and Neko Case, appeared on giant festivals like Bonnaroo and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, and placed a medallion around Emmylou Harris' neck inducting her into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Charlie's self-titled album earned 4 out of 5 stars in Uncut and MOJO magazines, and sparked a bevy of great press and renewed interest in his fascinating career.

Maniac's Dream
Zanzibar
PS, US Finland is the epicenter of collective music-making.

Maserati
Inventions Remixes
PS, US Last year Georgia's MASERATI ended a four-year absence with "Inventions For The New Season", a delirious soundtrack for late-night cityscapes and never-ending car chases. The first album featuring new drummer Jerry Fuchs (LCD Soundsystem, !!!, The Juan Maclean), Inventions quite literally reinvented Maserati as a motorik psych-rock band with a disco ball for a kick drum. It makes sense, then, that Maserati have commissioned a pair of remixes by two producers most likely to shove their songs onto the dancefloor feet-first. Side A finds THEE LOVING HAND (Tim Goldsworthy of The DFA, Hercules and Love Affair) stripping "The World Outside" to almost nothing, reimagining it as a vintage European disco track from the ground up. Starting with a steady, far-off kick drum and a rogue, in-your-face hi hat, the song's seemingly disparate parts eventually lock into the kind of dirty disco that has made Goldsworthy a club legend. Equally club-friendly, !!!'s JUSTIN VAN DER VOLGEN brushes away the grit of the original "Inventions" and painstakingly buffs it to a shine as slick as black ice. The side-long trance mix maintains the sweaty atmosphere of the original, but removes the top-down drive in favor of a midnight jog. Strictly limited to a one-time pressing of 1,000 copies, "Inventions Remixes" is both an addendum to the successful reboot of Inventions For The New Season, as well as a testament to the broad spectrum of influences that flow in and out of Maserati's music.

The New York-based southerners feel lived in yet ripple with freshness" Sydney Morning Herald "The Mendoza Line add another impressive release to their stable" Xpress "Full of Light and Full of Fire is their first release to absolutely nail it - with just the right balance between passion and power... This is an album soaked in American history both musical and political, fuelled by a burning flame and a desire for something more" Rolling Stone "This is the sweet sad music of humanity my dear, the beguiling melody heard in the distance while the whole shithouse goes up in flames" Inpress "Full Of Light And Full of Fire is The Mendoza Line's most consistent, poignant and rewarding album to date and, if you haven't heard them before, a damn good place to start" dB "The tender, cigarettes and alcohol soaked voices of Shannon McArdle and Timothy Bracy suggest that their hearts have often been tentatively stuck back together, and their sorrow is perfectly underpinned throughout the album by a soulful mixture of acoustica and synth" BMA "Clutch Bright Eyes in one hand, Holly Golightly in another, smoosh in a bunch of other particularly arty, indie-country swaggers and voila! The Mendoza Line. They'll awaken your eyes to much light; a skerrick of hope may be left in your ignorant, cynical adolescent blood after listening to them" Tearaway.

Milosh
iii
PS, US Milosh makes music for the mind, body & spirit. Introspective, intimate, sensual electro-folk steeped in perfumed melancholy & luscious romance. Combining beats, samples, guitars, strings & the most silken falsetto voice since prime-time Smokey Robinson, the third Milosh album iii takes the listener on an emotional journey through an exquisitely beautiful musical landscape. The tracks on iii combine the best of both Milosh's cerebral electronica & soulful singer-songwriter sides, stirring deep
emotions with lush arrangements, honeyed vocals & delicately deconstructed beats. From the softly weeping strings of "Another Day" to the weightless, airy melancholy of "Gentle Samui," many of these tracks come in various shades of blue.

QUEEN: As they gear up for the release of their first new studio album since the death of Freddie Mercury, MOJO's Mark Blake looks back on Queen's globe-conquering late-'70s/early-'80s reinvention. Cue extreme decadence, endless hit singles, that disco album and some of the most iconic facial furniture in rock history.

THE LAST SHADOW PUPPETS: Alex Turner and Miles Kane have put their day jobs on hold in order to pursue a new symphonic sound that has wowed listeners everywhere. MOJO's Tom Doyle catches up with the dynamic duo of British pop to discover exactly where it all went right.

DAVID GILMOUR: In this month's MOJO Interview, we head to the Sussex farmhouse of one of Britain's bona fide guitar geniuses to talk solo endeavours, early influences and his current thoughts on that band Pink Floyd.

BON IVER: With one of the albums of the year already under his belt, Justin Vernon has found himself delivering his version of Old, Weird America to an increasingly devoted audience. MOJO's Gabe Soria travels to Wisconsin to meet 2008's most celebrated wandering minstrel.

THE FUGS: Rock 'n' roll deviants, political warriors, peddlers of smut and unrelenting in their quest for truth and the justice, Ed Sanders and his band of idealistic troubadours were on a mission to set '60s America on fire. Michael Simmons dives into their treacherous tale.

Mystick Krewe Of Clearlight
PS, US This group formed in 1996 as an instrumental side project led by Jimmy Bower and Joe Lacaze of the New Orleans sludge metal group Eyehategod, and also included members of fellow Big Easy metal units Crowbar and Down. The goal was to separate the pummeling nihilistic dirge of Eyehategod and create an outlet for the improv music they absorbed growing up in New Orleans, whether it be jazz, soul, funk, or rock. This is their self-titled debut, originally released in 2000, back in print for a limited time on purple vinyl. Nebulo
Avutma
PS, GERMANY Avutma is the latest release by Nebulo after the album Kolia, two remixes for architect and Hecq, and even freely available Nebulo ringtones. The outstanding French artist Thomas P. with this CD has created a closed opus that might be seen as a concept album in which the listener has to decide what the concept is. Nebulo's subtle approach forms a complex fictitious scenery by using seemingly minimal resources that are more visible than ever. Electronically treated instruments like organ and piano, combined with synth layers and modified beats generate tempers that range from surreal to melancholic or even nearly frightening. Listening to 'Avutma' is like walking in a dimly lit basement never knowing what's behind the next curve, and who or what is actually casting these shadows on the walls... Nebulo's trademark, a connection between ambience, idm, clicks'n'cuts and postmusique- concrète collages is presented here once again. As a reviewer wrote: 'surreal dreamscapes painted with tears and sometimes even blood' - Avutma might be the soundtrack of today's grand guignol.
