Parasol New Arrivals • May 16, 2006

Hi all,

This week you’ll find tight new releases from Twilight Singers, Boris, The Knife (LP), Camera Obscura, and much more. Our good buddy, Mr. Golden Sun has decided to make a special appearance today here, in Champaign-Urbana. We've already kicked off the celebration with five cups of over-caffeinated coffee and a special CD of Smiths songs unearthed from one of the ghosts of Parasol's past. As many of you know, you are always welcome to come in and shop live and in real time at Parasol HQ. Email or call for directions to our neck of the woods in sleepy Urbana.

If you haven't already, please get yourself a copy of The Coral Sea's "Volcano And Heart". This is a record which just keeps getting better with each listen.

Well alrighty then,

Royal/Paul

Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week
Espers - I I CD $12.33 15% off (Drag City)
From the beginning, this has been a living, growing thing. This album finds the group at sextet size, with greater powers & capabilities then before. The sound is achieved using a mad variety of instruments, from a standard Martin 6 string acoustic, Fender jazz bass & drum kit to more exotic implements such as doumbek, dholak & male & female larynx. The outcome is a friendly new sensation, it warms the room & dims the lights with dense yet agile atmospherics, still in communion with the realities of our present day.
Jim's Pick: Best New Music from Scandinavia
Montys Loco - Man Overboard CD $11.48 15% off (NONS)
One of this year's most beautiful and bizarre albums! 'Man Overboard' from Swedish female duo Montys Loco starts out spectral and crystalline but in no time the hip-swinging girl-group smile-pop of "Give Me More" draws you in. But it's the fact that "Give Me More" is about addiction in its myriad forms and the edgy darkness and sultry spite of title track "Man Overboard" and the incendiary "Accident" that keep this from being your basic Swede-pop romp or Concretes-clone or Bjork-wannabe. It's not any of these. It is outlandish and enamoring, it is produced by the studio-genius Bjorn Yttling (Peter Bjorn And John) and it does come across like some sleepy, hyper-sensual sonic otherworld that we are lucky enough to visit, but do you want to live here? You just might… Nifty packaging too!… Click here to check out Jim's new and improved Scandinavian music page, updated every other day or so. Plenty of sound samples and a bit more detail than you get in the regular update.

Boris
Pink
PS, US These new recordings effectively combine all the strongest elements of what they are capable of into one solid, complete, concise album. It's mega-drone, balls- out punk rock, extreme dark psychedelia & 70s' fuzzed out acid rock. The clincher is an infusion of ultra-catchy melodicism into their already heavy foundation. There's infectious vocal melodies that combined with intelligent song-writing create a solidified, undeniable union. It comes with a die-cut cover that when opened reveals 3 perforated acid-tab cards.

Boyracer
Punker Than You Since '92
PS, US DOUBLE 'BEST OF' 75 SONG RETROSPECTIVE. Since the early 1990s Boyracer have existed around the singular pop visions of Stewart Anderson. Armed with a selection of fuzzboxes and a carefree revolving door line up, Boyracer have been carefully crafting their buzzsaw assault, shaving seconds off frantic slithers of adrenaline punk-pop. Noted recordings on numerous indie-cred labels such as Sarah Records and Slumberland, and brutally honest sweaty live performances have cemented Boyracer's place in global indiedom as influential stalwarts of the genre. This double disc set, on the band's own 555 Recordings label, features 75 selections from their exhaustive back catalogue. The tracks chosen (by Stewart) span the band's global history from Leeds, UK to Flagstaff, Arizona, via stints in Japan and Australia. Forever embracing the DIY ethic to excess, Boyracer are known for their completists nightmare of a back catalogue, (with nearly 500 songs on commercially available releases to date). "Punker Than You Since '92" includes much of the band's best known and strongest material coupled with long out of print tracks, (including the impossible to find debut 7" unavailable anywhere since it's release in 1992). There are tracks from strictly limited releases too, such as 2005's lathe cut 10" LP (which was a pressing of 75 copies worldwide). The compilation is a welcome round-up for diehards, a chance to fill in some gaps for the casual observer, and is also a perfect introduction for the new and curious to one of indiepop's longest standing and respected bands. Disc One 2001-2006: 1. A History Of Snakes, 2. They're Making Money Off You, 3. Who Pissed On Yr Bonfire?, 4. 2nd Hand Youth, 5. 9 To 5 Style, 6. Lou And Ged, 7. 90s Are Thru, 8. Brandtson
Hello, Control!
PS, US Having already exceeded the shelf-life of the average indie rock band by a few years, a series of tours, and a handful of albums, Brandtson could have used the departure of original bassist John Sayre as their moment to shake hands, congratulate each other on a race well run, and ride off into the Cleveland sunset with their reputation and legacy intact. But just as a brush with death can cause some people to live their lives with a newfound purpose, Brandtson found a new bassist, regrouped, and agreed to shake off all of the trappings of comfort and complacency that can cripple a band that has been writing songs together for eight years, creating their boldest, most immediate, and most dynamic album in the process. Brandtson demoed nearly 50 of the most electronic-infused, yet soulful songs they've ever written for what was to become Hello, Control. They went into the studio, inspired by Violent Femmes, Depeche Mode, and the idea of breaking out of the norm and challenging what's comfortable. Welcome to Brandtson's second act.

Play to My Own Tune
PS, US "A modern Brian Wilson, the illegitimate child of Elton John & Donald Fagan, Godley & Cream's younger brother...the trademarks of the Bunny experience are beautiful introspective songs laced w/a 70's pop sound." Acutely personal, mostly autobiographical & unashamedly emotional contents. Underneath the complex arrangements & layered vocals lie dreamy, beautifully crafted pop songs.

Lloyd, I'm Ready To Be Heartbroken
PS, SPAIN On the 7" vinyl release of "Lloyd, I'm ready to be heartbroken", limited to 3000 copies, the exclusive B-side is "I can't stay mad at you" (a cover version of country singer Skeeter Davis): a drum-less melody with great vocal harmonies and beautiful keyboard arrangements. The band recorded the album track in Sweden with the help of producer Jari Haapalainen (Ed Harcourt, THE ONCRETES) and a great team of people with whom they've worked in the country's best studios: some of the string musicians have recently toured with Brian Wilson or Arthur Lee & LOVE.

Cherubs

PS, US Playful arpeggios, call & response, kitschy little flourishes dosey-do around each other on twin guitar lines, as a keenly observant drummer jumps from lullabies to punk freak-outs with epileptic speed. Narratives of rejection & desire. Unassuming, charming & inventive, consistently upbeat enough to ensure prime dance-floor exposure in the indie clubs all summer - breaking heels at least, if not boundaries.

Controlling
The Famous Automatic City
PS, US Produced by Alex Newport (At The Drive-In, the Locust), the disc is a concept album that attempts to immerse the listener in the frenetic pace one experiences living in Los Angeles, touching on a variety of desperate cosmopolitan themes involving driving, dreams and that great equalizer: death. According to singer/guitarist Max Hellmann, CTF's goal is to "Challenge the listener, but not to a point where [the music is] unlistenable.

Cub Country
Lucky Knife
Ps, US Feat. members & ex-members of JETS TO BRAZIL, HELMET, RIVAL SCHOOLS, MAPLEWOOD, THE LOVE SCENE & NEW END ORIGINAL. Sad-eyed & surreal Americana sonnets emerge. While recent years have found Chatelain sharing the stage with a number of companions, it's still his twangy ruminations on life's great mysteries that render heart-touchingly close-delivering songs that can be as personal & intimate as the tiny bedroom they were recorded in.

Dargel, Corey
Less Famous Than You
PS, UK Composer, lyricist, and singer Corey Dargel's gentle assault on the pop idiom creates a tension which pervades his music: Deadpan and detached vocals reveal heartbreaking intimacies, awkward and obtrusive drum patterns struggle against fragile harmonies, vocals and music uneasily opposing each other as songs stumble to their ends. Emotional and intelligent, his songs evoke the fragility of Antony & The Johnsons and The Hidden Cameras , the electronic works of the late Macon Sumerlin, and the avant-pop approaches of Mark Amerika and Arthur Russell. Voted one of Time Out New York's "Top 25 People To Watch In 2006," Dargel's live performances have received glowing reviews in the New York Times and the Village Voice.

Dominique A
L'horizon
PS, SPAIN"La rue monte en lacets / Chaque virage se mérite..." ("The street goes up in loops / Every bend is earned ...") These words that open L'horizon, the new album by DOMINIQUE A, summarizes well the course of a man who is not used to follow the straight lines. DOMINIQUE A is an explorer. Each one of his records has been earned. Curiosity was needed to go deep in La fossete, his first album from 1992, which has become through the years in a reference for the trend that shook the French chanson, opening the road to a new generation of artists. We are not in reviewing DOMINIQUE A's discography here again. But, in ivestigation, in analysis, the man formely from Nantes has always wrong-footed his predecessor album. After La Memoire Neuve and the hit "Le Twenty-Two Bar", included in it, came the dryness of Remué, and afterwards the brighter Auguri, the result of his first work with the renowned producer John Parish. After Tout Sera Comme Avant, very arranged and explorer, we have now the purity, the clarity and the lyricism of L'horizon. And both of them can leave you astonished. With this kind of quiet cheek, DOMINIQUE A takes a new advantage over the rest of the people. He neither renounces nor comes back. He only makes his own way and this brand new record is another territory to walk on withoutgetting tired. His voice, that one time seemed difficult to place, sets free. Behind his faithful guitar, a subtle piano, some concise metal arrangements and fascinating choirs take over here and there. Dominique A is a melancholic man, but his melancholy is as essential as the sea border. A melancholywhich becomes impregnated in "L'horizon" with twilight atmospheres, of joyful lyrical fliers. As French chanson sinks in its effort of looking at the everyday life, DOMINIQUE A blows air into it, and opens huge spaces for it. He invents bizarre adventures, moving stories submitted to the demand of his writing, which spreads out, goes deep, tells and dreams. "Tous les chants sont d'oublis / Ou ne sont que foutaises / Si la vie est jolie / Qu'on setaise." ("All chants are about oblivion / or are but trinkets / if life is beautiful / let's keep our mouths shut"). "L'horizon" is full of literary references, of rough pictures, fugitive loves, perturbing memories from the childhood, distilled as a hallucinated vision of reality. And attached to all this there is a new chapter in the French chanson, which with no doubt -we can bet- will leave a deep mark.

Life Without Fear
PS, US As unexpected as Jim O'Rourke's embrace of John Fahey's music a decade ago. Droning, guitar-picked porch blues blend with whiskey-soaked vocals, voodoo jazz, & throbbing electronics while low hums rub up against scraped strings & a buzzed-out harmonica heard through a tin-can. This is rough-hewn experimental bluestronica mixed with graveyard dirt.

Existensminimum
Last Night My Head Tried To Explode And I Wrote Everything Down (DELAYED)
PS, SWEDEN First full-length from Swedish studio-wizard/uber-producer Magnus Henriksson AKA Existensminimum, who's also a member of Moneybrother. On the heels of two amazing singles ("From Me To You" and "Running Down Everyone") this album is even more surreal and adventuresome. Looking beyond the frame of modern day rock and pop, Existensminimum offers a lightspeed trip through modern electro pop, Spiritualized-styled guitar-drone, neo-romantic crooner ballads and anxious deconstructed rock. All the while harkening back to the heady daze of 70s Krautrock's sci-fi explorations and cosmic communal folk, along with the brash noisy pop of England in the late 80s, early 90s. Not that far removed from a Silverbullit/Citizen Bird release...

Frank And Walters, The
Best Of: Special Edition CD+DVD
PS, US The Frank and Walters signed to Setanta Records in 1991. The Frank's first hit single 'After All' from 'Trains, Boats & Planes' resulted with the band's first appearance on Top Of The Pops. The second album 'Grand Parade' was described by NME as "The jauntiest of melodic joys" with tracks like 'Colours' (featured on Tom Dunne's Alternative Irish Anthems), propelling The Franks to new heights. With Noel Gallagher as their roadie and supported by Suede & Radiohead the band toured the world and gained a loyal following with their energetic live shows, infectious melodies and seemingly irrepressible happiness. Written in New York, 'Beauty Becomes More Than Life' was described by NME as "A lost classic for the 21st century." Following the release of 'Glass' in 2001 the band took a break from recording & gigging. In early 2005, the band began writing again and signed to FIFA Records. A new triple album titled 'Souvenirs' was released internationally in October 2005. The release was followed by a sold out tour of Ireland & the UK and a nomination for 'Best Irish Album' in the Meteor Irish Music Awards 2006. 'Souvenirs' is widely seen to emphasise the genius of The Frank and Walter's ability to write about the ordinary and make it something to aspire to. To celebrate the bands 15th year in music, FIFA will be re-printing a number of special edition CD's and Vinyl's. The first 'Special Edition' is a reprint of the Frank And Walters 'Best Of' including a free DVD of the bands videos and a short documentary on the band (approx running time 1 hour). CD: Colours, Plenty Times, Fashion Crisis Hits New York, This Is Not A Song, How Can I Exist, New York, After All, Walters Trip, Indian Ocean, Underground, Daisy Chain, Time We Said Goodnight, Tony Cochrane. DVD: Colours, Plenty Times, Indian Ocean, Underground, This Is Not A Song, After All, Documentary (featuring interviews, live songs and concert footage).

Fujimoto, Yuichiro
The Mountain Record
PS, US Yuichiro Fujimoto was born in 1981 and lives in Urayasu Chiba, Japan. He has already released two critically acclaimed albums in the last years and managed to established a very unique style. his songs are little, open poems, describing a small moment like a haiku does. the compositions are simple-structured, but in this loose way of playing lies the strength of fujimoto's work. This openess allows the music to create rooms, situations, to establish an atmosphere beyond the notes played. and this what yuichiro does on "the mountain record" in a most beautiful way. The nine songs all approach this aim in a different way. the opening song "listen to november steps" gets by with just a few notes and a soft humming - already indicating that complexity is not the goal of this work. the pauses between the notes are at least as important as the notes itself on this cd. still this album has a variety of approaches to offer ranging from paino, pure nature-recordings to electronic editing. this work creates wonderful little sceneries which are still open enough that you sometimes might not even recognize it as music. apart from making music yuichiro fujimoto is a gifted photographer. the 12-sided booklet offers an insight in his way capturing scenes as images, closely related to his way of making music.

Glass Eye
Every Woman's Fantasy
PS, US After a LONG wait, it's the NEW (OLD) GLASS EYE ALBUM fans have been awaiting for 13 long, long years! While working on guitarist KATHY MCCARTY's (cf. her album of Daniel Johnston covers "Dead Dog's Eyeball") new album, they dug up the old tapes, and were finally inspired to polish it up for release, though not TOO much polish. The dark loopiness & jagged edges, surely the products of their collapsing record deal in 1993, are here in all their glory. Songs leap from their embedded but balmy trademark pop hooks & veer off toward the rough & the weird, musical Hunter S. Thompson territory really. The things that made them lovable standouts of the mid to late-80's hot Austin scene, even among a peer group that included musical genius like Scratch Acid, Butthole Surfers, True Believers, & Reivers, are all still there, but hearing this album now, I can't help but feel with the addition of the McCarty songs that ended up on her earlier solo album instead, this would have been a cherry on top of the Austin sundae. Perhaps not a more "mature" work as the cliche' goes, but certainly a look into the darker recesses of the weird GE soul that we're happy to have finally.

Guthrie, Robin
Continental
PS, US As COCTEAU TWINS guitarist and producer, Robin Guthrie is the man responsible for creating that famous sound and opening the door for My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Ride, et al. Continental is Robin's strongest all-instrumental bliss out, or make out, record since Cocteau Twins. Robin gives more heart and soul on Continental than on his previous instrumental release Imperial. Continental is more focused, stronger in feeling, and in composition. Of course all of Robin's signature elements are here: Shimmering guitars, ethereal moods as fluid and deep as any of Eno's, and yes, he does at times thankfully bring the rock. The mood overall is classic Robin Guthrie. Fans of the Cocteau Twins and all they've spawned, please welcome back your daddy. This is the first of four new Robin Guthrie records. Robin's music is a treasure. He's one of the great all-time heroes of the current bliss pop generationTrack list: 1. Continental, 2. Conquering the Romantic, 3. Crescent, 4. Monument, 5. Amphora, 6. After growing up on a diet of 90's lo-fi, old blues & the Harry Smith Anthology, he bought a 4 track & began wrapping his folkish guitar music in a cloud of effects & electronic noises under sparse lyrics that are a mix of broken English & unintelligible mantras. Songs are built up while played, captured on tape & then all effects are immediately wiped never to be duplicated. A simple but extraordinary sound.

Inch-Time
As The Moon Draws Water
PS, UK With his latest album "As The Moon Draws Water" Australian artist Stefan Panczak confirms his place as a key figure in underground electronica, combining minimal beats with such diverse influences as jazz, folk and World music to create a wholly unique and organic sound. Expect to hear some sparkling, chiming and seductive electronica that's as subtle and beautiful as it is impossible to resist... Inch-time's last sold out single was raved about by retailers from boomkat to smallfish and "Icicles & Snowflakes / Almond Eyes" was chosen as a DJ mag SUREPLAYER. Inch-time's debut album 'Any colour you Like' was released as ltd CD in Europe by Static Caravan to heaps of praise. Placing it amongst the top 15 electronica releases of 2006, The Wire reviewed the album as "a luminous collection of music that deserves a wider hearing. "Panczak is blessed with a marvellously unhurried sense of placement and these pieces unfurl with an almost ceremonious poise. "Kyoto" proves the point, counter pointing trembling pizzicatos with a wistfully circular arrangement for string quartet and calmly conjuring a richly melancholy atmosphere without the faintest hint of gimmickry". For fans of the spekk, expanding, Type and ECM labels and prime period Tortoise. This is micro-electronica , freak out samples, orchestral string arrangements and dubs all conducted with a post rock mind set for the listener's pleasure.

In Sunday Songs
PS, US Based in NY, the name refers to the interplay of ones & zeros of the digital age. Catchy pop that balances the shimmering synth sounds of Autumn P Proemm's keyboard & voice with forceful guitar & vocals from Philippino born Chris Punsalan. The New York Press termed them a "lush, new-wave indie-pop, boy-girl group who are better than, well, half of Jade Tree's roster" while the NY Times compared them to the Canadian band Stars. Though based on a classic Amer-indie rock sound, the hooks & electronics keep it fresh & of the moment.

Kid Conga And The Pink Monkey Birds
Philosophy and Underwear
PS, US Best known for his guitar work with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, The Cramps, The Gun Club, Congo Norvell, and Knoxville Girls, KID CONGO POWERS has also played with the Legendary Stardust Cowboy, Make-Up, Mark Eitzel, The Angels of Light, and many more. PHILOSOPHY AND UNDERWEAR, the debut of Kid's first solo band, Kid Congo and the Pink Monkey Birds, is a unique fusion of elements - garagy punk, glam, dirty soul, experimental noise, dark balladry, and even abrasive mechanical electro all filtered through Kid's unique post-no wave aesthetic. Not only does the band feature New York guitar hero Jack Martin (ex-Knoxville Girls, Honeymoon Killers, YYY's, etc.), but the record features guest appearances by Little Annie (Crass, Coil, Wolfgang Press, etc.) and Captain Comatose (Khan and Snax).

La Casa Azul
El Sonido Efervescente de la Casa Azul
PS, SPAIN "The fizzy sound of LA CASA AZUL" - The first demos and the first album. It's been only six or seven years, but in this time LA CASA AZUL have achieved so many different goals and have convinced so many fans around the globe (and we're not only talking about their enormous success in Japan), that an album like this makes more sense than ever. Even more so if we remember that "El sonido efervescente de La Casa Azul", the band's debut mini-CD, has been sold out for a long time now. In fact, the first demos they distributed before releasing this debut have been cult items for a long time, too. Even before they played their first live show (as you can check by listening to the album we're now re-introducing). Hence, the re-release of the first album plus the three first demos and other extra tracks is such good news. Even more so if they're coming with a renewed, better sound (mastered by Xavier Alarcón), and a luxuriant new artwork: illustrations by Jean Duprez, one of our favourite illustrators(www.duprezdolores.com) and cover art by Cocoe ( www.cocoe.com). Let's talk about history. In 1999, sunshine-pop producer Guille Milkyway found in the five members of LA CASA AZUL the perfect vehicle for his sunny melodies, which melted the spirit of the A&M label in the 60's with 70's disco and 90's europop. But, as stated by Eugene Light on the liner notes, when LA CASA AZUL came under the spotlight "it wasn't the right moment for Bubblegum, Ye-Ye, Europop, Sunshine Pop, André Popp nor Roger Nichols. (...) They'd sing 'Me gustas' ('I like you') and it meant 'Me gustas', as if the songs had just come out from the Brill Building". In other words, maybe the scene wasn't ready to hear the influence of HARPER'S BIZARRE, THE COWSILLS or the golden years of A&M, but when they sang "Me gustas" it meant "Me gustas", and the songs connected immediately with the people. You've got the prove towards the end of the album: the crowd singing along by heart to songs that had not been released yet. It was november, 1999. Almost a year later, in october 2000, Elefant released their debut mini-album on mini-CD and 10" vinyl. Both formats are sold out. This record features, as well as the eight song included in that debut mini-album, the three first demos that started it all. We have also included their cover versions of MECANO and Jeanette, plus the song "Tantas cosas que arreglar" (featured in our 2003 compilation "Momentos perdidos") and the new version of "Chicle cosmos", recorded in 2004 to be included in the soundtrack to the movie "El Asombroso Mundo de Borjamari y Pocholo", a comedy featuring Spanish comedians Santiago Segura and Willy Toledo.

Leather Uppers
Bright Lights
PS, US The proto-primitive garage rock duo known as the Leather Uppers was founded in 1991 in Toronto, Canada by Greg Tymoshenko & Craig Daniels. Born out of the malaise & fatigue brought on by the post-metal, pre-grunge musical vacuum of the time, the Uppers opted for a bare-bones drums, guitar & vocal-based sound. Their outrageous 60's/70's-inspired matching stage costumes were clearly as much at odds w/ the "cool" styles of the time as their incredibly energetic, stripped- down brand of "panic rock"

Leels
Fingeescrossed
PS, US 'This supergroup of Florida-bred boys and girls (featuring members of HOME & MERINGUE) work long-distance to trade musical files and galvanize their collective strengths on their 3rd, most perfect, record to date. Following on the heels on the Emperor Jones released "Leels" (2002) and "Cannonballs and Silver Tongues" (2004), they continue to share various bits of their musical language from far flung reaches (NYC, St. Pete, State College, PA.) then build and grow them at Eric's Devil Isle Wetlab studio. The end result are layered, psychedelic-folk pop masterpieces that lilt and lurch in equal measure (think Uncle Wiggly, Grandaddy, Thinking Fellers Union, and 70s AM radio). The Leels flex the sonic cyber-pathways, & we can confidently say that The Little River Band never sounded so good."

Bajamar
PS, US Danish artist Jonas Munk Jensen's second purely ambient record for Darla follows footprints in the warm, wet sand made by his 2003 CD The North Shore, which was acclaimed by critics and fans. Like no other, Jonas manifests his vision of idyllic, tropical paradise as the perfect soundtrack to the dream. Bajamar is similar in sound to The North Shore yet it's a more cohesive and more solid album. Jonas' good friend Ulrich Schnauss says it's his favorite of Jonas' ambient works. If The North Shore were aural Valium, Bajamar is pure Opium. The record produces the very same ethereal buzz a lazy, endless summer afternoon at the beach with a minus tide does.

McCarty, Kathy
Another Day in the Sun
PS, US "McCarty's mingling of her clear and cogent vocals with a well-drawn melange of styles marks 'Another Day in the Sun' not only as a most welcome return, but easily one of the best albums of the young year."-SXSW. New solo album, 10 years in the making, from GLASS EYE founder, vocalist, guitarist & is a cause for rejoicing for those who love Austin or just good music not stamped out by the goddamned cookie cutter. Joined here by her GE mates Stella Weir & Brian Beattie, who also produces, it's damned near a full GE album, but as seen through the songwriting lens of McCarty. Deftly melds some odd folk threads into the more familiar, though still off center, blend of weird rock & pop, which adds some very nice, unexpected touches to her more familiarly unexpected weirdness. Make sense? "Down in the Basement the light has changed. My dark is light and the shadows are stained." HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Montys Loco
Man Overboard
PS, SWEDEN Ultra-sensual art-pop/weird-folk alchemy produced by Bjorn Yttling (Peter Bjorn And John). It's like a free-range, organic version of The Knife or Phil Spector's girlgroup harem, plus it's everything I love about The Concretes, but with a more experimental bent, so comparisons to Bjork aren't too far out. Katapult REVIEW: "The two women that are hiding behind the name Montys Loco have been playing music for over 10 years together. Accordingly to themselves Björn Yttling, who is the producer of these 10 songs, has shown them a new pathway to walk on. And the walk they walk is good. Really good. The music that gets delivered by these two ladies is small pop songs with big words. It's smart, funny and at the same time so distinct and honest with a sexy edge... On "Man Overboard" Anja Bigrells voice sound harsh and elegant at the same time. It reminds me of Anna Ternheim and Karin Dreijer mixed with Victoria Bergsman from The Concretes, at the same time. The spacious keyboard and organ sounds mixed together with the earthly touch of an acoustic guitar creates a Phil Spector vibe that is hard to not like. It's a record that at first comes off as nothing special, but just as a seed takes its time to blossom into a wild colourful lovely flower." CD comes in a spiffy velour/vinyl wallet with a full-color lyric booklet.

Rauhan Orkestri/Lauhkeat Lampaat
Sylissain oot
PS, CANADA RAUHAN ORKESTERI (Peace Orchestra)/LAUHKEAT LAMPAAT (Meek Sheep) CD originally released on LP in 2005 on Italian label, QBICO; ten pieces of free-improv-folk-jazz from Finland, with a distinctive foundation of playful vigor and heartening spirit. It's an organic improv session that breathes countryside air, sensing the grass between its toes. Not including several self-released 7"s and limited edition CD-Rs, this is the PEACE ORCHESTRA's second full length. It illustrates a great progression and a newly acquired, absolutely beautiful sense of restraint. The members of this quartet play off each other magically, leaving room for the microscopic details to shine through. Deeply routed in the incestuous Finnish pych-folk-experimental scene, the family tree of this four-piece has many branches, including the duo, LAUHKEAT LAMPAAT who are peppered throughout this release. These pieces are differentiated by higher timbres and a slightly more tongue-in-cheek air (They are also distinguished by the asterisk in the song listing) RAUHAN ORKESTERI has to be one of Europe's most exciting new free jazz outfits, filled with a rarely encountered joyful energy floating on a fantastic search into the free realms of the outer possibilities of sound. No cause for intellectual drama here, Antti Tolvi, Ville Jolanki (reeds), Jaakko Tolvi (percussion) and Tero Kemppainen (bass) need no more then the direct physical contact between body and instrument for their sonic onslaughts that in no time go from hectic outbursts to warm and mellow soft blows.

Redfearn, Alec K & the Eyesores
Smother Party
PS, US A collection of tales about real & imagined horrors. The music is decidedly more cabaret than the previous CD. Slow, simmering noir-ish dirges, spastic no-wave tangos, repetitive rhythmic conundrums, Weimar-style cabaret songs, drunken revelry, crippling depression, extreme self loathing, Catholic guilt, clanking, scraping & radio noise are some of the many facets that make up The Eyesores' sound. "This is wonderful stuff - brave and experimental, yet warmly human. Make room on your folk revival shelf for something that may be influenced by folk, but is in no way a revival." -Splendid

Russian Circles
Enter
PS, US Even though they don't play the most accessible music, an instrumental amalgam of punk, metal, indie-rock & even prog, they have the it factor. Debut album, definitely doesn't sound like a new band clumsily over-thinking their songs, but instead it sounds like one cohesive composition in six movements. Each movement holds its breath through the intense moments, but exhales through sweeping, airy horizons that slowly collapse into dense panoplies, showcasing the band's shifting dynamics & not just the binary code of loud/quiet. Coupled with their richly textured guitar-work, thick, growling bass lines & propulsive, polyrhythmic beats.

PS, UK Feat. Montreal based MIKE FEUERSTACK aka "GRANDPAPA" (KEPLER, WOODEN STARS) From its haunting & evocative opening chords to its self-assured instrumentation & lyricism. Von Balthazar, Troy
Troy Von Balthazar
PS, SPAIN 16 songs + 1 video. Engaging and leading character of an indie rock which does not like anything more than repainting our dull daily life with throbbing explosions, TROY VON BALTHAZAR, inspired singer of Chokebore, is one of the most enthralling figure of the American underground. The writing and the music, which made intrusion in his life at the age of 6 after a fall top of a staircase, will be thus the privileged passport of an artist who, on the borders of the Pacific, knew very early how to develop a unique, singular and captivating music. Temporarily forsaking the brilliantly tortured melodies and the furious performances of Chokebore for more melancholic compositions, where acoustic guitars and piano cut the lion's share, Sir VON BALTHAZAR reveals us today a pacified facet of his personality. Able to sculpt weight as if it was the most common of materials, TROY VON BALTHAZAR builds, record after record, show after show, a state where hypnosis becomes a kingdom. Some elliptic arrangements, a gripped voice, and it is a whole world delightfully odd, always in weightlessness in spite of an omnipresent tension, which appears under our amazed eyes. We are not going to paradises of naive idylls anymore, he comes to say. To tell the truth, it does not matter, since the hells where this crazy ally eagerly invites us seem to be really attractive. TROY VON BALTHAZAR, or how playing a funeral march with a flowery shirt... "Troy Von Balthazar, the most touching artist we have listened to since Elliott Smith (...) He stands out with songs that are remarkably disturbed, leaving us between the pleasure of hearing a music so pure and the relief of not being Troy Von Balthazar (...) Wonderful, but dangerous." Les Inrockuptibles. "Troy Von Balthazar is not only an exciting disciple of Cohen, he is that and much more!" Rolling Stone Francia.

Wired For Mono
A Calling from Another Station; Radio Interrupt
PS, SWEDEN Debut full-length from retro-fitted garage-rockers Wired For Mono, "The best live act in Stockholm" (Ebbot Lundberg, The Soundtrack of Our Lives), and easily some of the best classic rock action released this year. Logo Magazine REVIEW: "Straining it through a millennial filter that allows Mick Jagger to strut alongside The Charlatans, and The Saints to roll in pig shit with GG Allin"... NME live REVIEW: "Deceptively noisy Scando-drone heroes arrive in the UK... The cabal of Swedish rock n roll bands set for world domination continues with Stockholm's premier pop-art blues janglists and Soundtrack Of Our Lives protégés Wired For Mono. Right from the start it's obvious that singer/guitarists Henrik Lillsjo and Arvid Engstrom favour the rubber faced contortions of 65-model Keith Richards and the dress sense of cosmic country icon, Gram Parsons. But tonight is no excursion into fringed-jacket retro-fetishism: Wired For Mono are dirty drone rock boys in disguise and the loudest thing NME has heard in a dog's age."

Year Of
Slow Days
PS, US A soft humming. A clarinet from a distance. Disconnected sounds, searching, waiting. With "Mantra" "Slow Days" begins as expected - at least with regard to this line up. BERNARD FLEISCHMANN, CHRISTOF KURZMANN, PAUL KLING (aka Burkhard Stangl), Martin Siewert and Werner Dafeldecker are all together experimentalists of beats and sounds, trained in post-Jazz and improvisation, noisy, fragile, encoded. It sounds exactly like that what people like to call art. And in Vienna one is able to achieve this in a very special, hearty way. "Slow Days" has actually become a hearty, heartwarming record. A pop album, that certainly is a small surprise. Already the polymorph "mantra" finishes after one and a half minutes in a songwriter's intimacy. The five have already left a slight presentiment on Bernhard Fleischmann's album "Welcome tourist" (Morr 2002), "take your time" was the name of the track. "sleep" was another track on "Welcome tourist", an electronic track back then, garnished only with Christof Kurzmann's voice. For "slow days" it has become a chamber music inspirited country song, a chamber that permits a view on the sunset, with fainting guitars, a vibraphone, with warm distortions. "Don't get me wrong, it's just a song" sings Christof Kurzmann very close to your ear. Maybe it is even closer than that.

Adamson, Barry
Stranger on the Sofa (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 13TH)
PS, US New album of noir-ish film jazz from legendary composer & bassist for MAGAZINE and NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS on his own label. A DIY masterpiece picking up where "King of Nothing Hill" left off. Darkly cinematic, with its tale of future past, memories lost & dying love. Doesn't shy away from sentimentality but leaves enough slack for blistering prog work outs.

Albatross
Blessphemy (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 27TH)

Alcian Blue
Alcian Blue (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 26TH)
PS, US Though this CD is Alcian Blue 's debut full-length,the Washington, DC-based group, whose early limited-edition EPs drew favorable comparisons to the likes of My Bloody Valentine and Jesus and Mary Chain, have been been around for almost five years, recording records in their basement and developing an underground fan base both locally and globally. The sudden departure of their drummer late last year left them wondering what the future held for DC 's loudest rock band. It was right at this time that vocalist/guitarist Jake Reid and his then girlfriend (now wife) Kim started writing a batch of new songs with heavy drum machine beats and walls of synths and guitars. Blending the neo-shoegaze influences from their past releases with the haunting landscapes of early '80s icons like Joy Division/New Order,The Cure, and prime time Depeche Mode, the new sound showcased on Alcian Blue presents a fresh perspective and groundwork for exploration. Fans of the aforementioned legends,as well as modern groups like Interpol,The Editors, and Film School will love Alcian Blue. If this record isn't loud enough, head to one of their shows and see why the comparisons to My Bloody Valentine aren't due to the music but the sheer volume in which they present their dark ominous sound.

Anoice
Remmings (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 23RD)
PS, UK Let's get this straight immediately. Anoice is not another instumental group with strong rock tendencies and an armchair association with classical music. Unlike numerous contemporaries which they will undoubtedly be compared to, their goal is not to follow the trends and make the soft/loud/soft/loud juxtapositions in every song, but to carefully craft each song with a strong attention to melody, solid accompaniment, and courteous counterpoint. One of the remarkable qualities of Anoice is that they truly work as a group, with members who aren't afraid to remain quiet while others play. Through meticulous composition Anoice has achieved an unrivaled quality. While the band isn't intentionally attempting to be cinematic, the recordings achieve something breathtaking and emotive: imagine the Rachel's scoring a film by Ang Lee. Anoice's music is anthemic and rich while being introspective and personal. Each track is preceeded by brief and dense ambient tracks to clense the audio palate much like ginger in your sushi boat. Anoice are a six-piece group based in Tokyo. The band was formed in January, 2004 by members Ricco (guitar/keyboards) and Taku (guitars and mandolin), who were soon joined by Yuki (piano), Utaka (viola), Matsu (bass), and Yossy (drums). While each member cites different musical influences, it's fairly evenly split between rock (think My Bloody Valentine meets King Crimson), classical and modern composers (Perhaps Debussy and Shostakovitch writing together after drinking heavily from Phillip Glass), jazz and electronic ( Autechre meets Mum maybe?). Combining all of these influences with their obvious Japanese heritage Anoice has created an album with an emotional arc, climaxing magnificently as it ends and leaves the listener determined to press play once again. Pronounced "a noyce," the name comes from the Celtic word for "now" (Anois). Remmings is their debut release and contains four named songs and five unnamed songs. Cover art by Non Format. Mastering by Jeff Lipton (Flaming Lips, Magnetic Fields) "Anoice have produced something entirely different and original, a mature record of great beauty and attention to detail that rises above any clichés and should by all accounts establish them as one of the leading artists today." Battiato, Franco
Pollution (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 23RD)
PS, US Franco Battiato's wonderfully lively 1973 concept album Pollution is an audaciously psychedelic album drawn from the space rock dimension with good portions of electronics and keyboard layers. Drawing heavily on the VCS3 synthesizer, Battiato and company (besides himself, three backing band members play synth as well) give Pollution an extreme electronic edge. With comparisons to Ash Ra Tempel, Faust, and Pink Floyd, Pollution was declared "genius" by Frank Zappa. Extremely influential on the '90s Chicago post-rock mafia. Original artwork. New detailed liner notes.
