17 Pictures (Weschel Garland)
17 Pictures
PS, GERMANY 17 Pictures is a project by Jörg Follert, who has already released critically acclaimed under the pseudonyms Wechsel Garland and Wunder for labels like Morr or Karaoke Kalk. Follert lives in Cologne and has become an influential artist in the field between acoustic instrumentals, electronic collages and song-orientated pieces with vocals. Apart from album releases he wrote scores for different movies and contributed music to theatre plays. He has collaborated with musicians like World Standard, Felix Kubin, Sora, Niobe and did various remixes for projects like Calexico or Tied & Tickled Trio. On this CD he focuses more on guitar-based compositions making less use of electronic elements and vocals. This makes room for beautiful and intimate instrumentals in which the guitar is supported by rhodes, harmonica, string arrangements and a rhythm every now and then. Several songs carry a rather lonesome feeling - but they are alternated by more swinging upbeat pieces with jumping strings passages. A one-minute long theme introduced in the first track reappears in several variations throughout the CD establishing a frame for the whole album. The CD comes in a matt Digipack.

40Winks
Sound Puzzle Sampler
PS, US Vinyl 12" sampler from the second full length from the Belgian duo known as 40winks. They've been making and releasing music for over 4 years and have previously released on several underground Japanese labels, as well as a few in Europe, and we are proud to say this will be their first appearance on a US label, Merck Records. Sound Puzzle is a smooth storybook like collection focused on the aesthetics of raw jazzy hip hop and the complex layering and arrangements of samples from a variety of sources. The vinyl has a careful selection of about half of the cd release tracks, cutting out some interludes, but getting straight to the meaty bones of some delicious hiphop. This collection of beats and instrumentals was composed and polished in 2006 with a strong influence of early 90's hip hop production and excessive crate digging. Merck DJ's should feel right at home mixing this in with some Aphilas or Malcom Kipe. Limited to 600. Portion on colored vinyl.

Air (Pete Namlook)
Jeux Dangereux
PS, GERMANY "The long awaited fifth CD of the most successful solo project by Pete Namlook (started in 1993) deals with the most intense human feelings. Starting with 'Happiness' the old and wise Indian 'Khokon Da' shares his profound knowledge about this topic towards the end of his fulfilled life: 'Happiness has to be grown by you inside.' This deep introduction is accompanied by drones, Far Eastern spiritual melodies and beats. In 'Jeux Dangereux' a French girl describes her passionate relationship and gives us an insight into the soul of love, while 'Obsessions' is a wild trip through inner emotional stages living the dream of passion. Brilliant Italian electroclash artist Tying Tiffany and Pete Namlook combine forces for 'State of Mind'... subtle changes occur and the relationship comes to a turning point... until 'End of Line.' Looking back, the reprise shows that there is no gain without risk, no deep love without danger." There are 2 discs here, featuring the same recording: one in stereo, one in DTS 5.1 digital suround sound.

Alps, The
Jewelt Galaxies / Spirit Shambles
PS, JAPAN The ALPS are Jefre Cantu-Ledesma (aka Tarentel), Alexis Georgopoulos and Scott Hewicker, a loose-knit collective of atists/musicians/writers very active in San Francisco's vital underground scene. The group specialize in spontaneous compositions of the out-limits variety, offering a SOUND that is ancient and new, intimate and enormous, ecstatic and expansive, and illuminated with white light. And JEWELT GALAXIES/SPIRIT SHAMBLES is their 1st full album collecting the first two CDR releases from The ALPS. Following a specially tuned internal compass that leads them from open meadows and rushing rivers to urban chaos and decay, The Alps use a variety of sound sources (Wooden Flute, Tabla, Orchestra Bells, Electric Guitar, Omnichord, Microphone, Clarinet, Violin Bow, Acoustic Guitar, Organ, Shakers, Mixer, Voice, Cassette Tape, Sleigh Bells. This was recorded with one microphone in Scott Hewickers's living room mostly in one session on November 14, 2005 and a bit in August earlier in the year. Of their debut JEWELT GALAXIES, the good people at AQUARIUS RECORDS had this to say : "Glistening meditative soundscapes well-suited to gazing at frosty mountain peaks such as those of their namesake. Squeaky clarinets and alien flute melted into whirls of swish and whoosh, all laid over drones and instrument hum and tape hiss. Quite beautiful." The group are currently working on a follow-up record with engineer/producer Philip Manley (The Fucking Champs, Trans Am, Oneida). In the coming months, the group will release a 12" on visual artist Chris Johanson's new imprint Awesome Vistas. The group will also contribute a song to Devendra Banhart's forthcoming tribute compilation devoted to the works of the Clive Palmer. (Text by Jefre Cantu-Ledesma / The Alps).

Barlow, Lou
Mirror The Eye
PS, SPAIN Lou Barlow is a true workaholic and quite addicted to surprising us with his work. The musician born in Dayton in 1966 and now based in Los Angeles has become one of the most fundamental references of the North American indie music of the two last decades thanks to that blessed channeled hyperactivity in essential bands like Dinosaur Jr. or Sebadoh and in multitude of parallel projects like The New Folk Implosion, Sentridoh or Lou's Wasted Pieces. And more than that, in 2006, Barlow was immersed in new work for Dinosaur Jr (J.Mascis, Lou Barlow and Murph) and Sebadoh (Lou Barlow, Eric Gaffney and Jason Lowestein), but he has still managed to find enough time to record a EP of five songs exclusive for Acuarela, Mirror the Eye.
Barlow continues on the path of his first solo album, "Emoh" (Merge, 05), not only because the recording of these five tunes was done at his home studio, but also because it sets the idea that each song is different from the previous one, making this EP as unpredictable as enjoyable, always led by the unique voice of a Lou Barlow in a state of grace that seems to retake the ways of the best and more emotional songs of Sebadoh. This is, without a doubt, a tremendously accessible collection of melodies and tunes that go direct to the feet and the heart and more like old-school Sebadoh like than anything he has done in a while. Thus we find the nakedness of "Yawning Blue Messiah" and "You' re to Goat", the distortion of "Faith Defies the Night", in which he shows his more aggressive side, the two voices used in "My Surrender", to finish with the song that gives title to the EP, "Mirror the Eye" a touching gem, just ninety seconds long. Five lo-fi pieces of simple and sometimes rough construction but that with successive listening display a lot of small details which reveal the dedication this North American musician put in each one. And that reveal to us is that Mr. Barlow is in one of the sweetest and mature moments of his expanded trajectory.

Buffalo
Average Rock 'n' Roller
PS, AUSTRALIA 'My brief from the management was to sort 'em out and make a commercial record,' Chris Turner declares. The first thing the band did was to record 'Rollin'' and 'Hotel Ladies' as a single. The A-side in particular was an enticing effort, a loping slice of country-soul replete with Tice's heavily echoed vocals, a sing-a-long chorus, hand-claps and female backing vocals: perfectly suited for radio airplay. There are no two ways about it, Buffalo was a commercial entity by then yet the radio networks still refused to give their singles a spin! 'Hotel Ladies' on the flip side, with its slow-burning build up and rousing, guitar-heavy climax, held promise for an interesting album to come. Colin Stead joins as second guitarist, but leaves midway through his first tour. Pete Wells, frustrated by the new direction, leaves to form Rose Tattoo and is replaced by Ross Sims. Soon after, Buffalo break up - a sad end to one of Australia's greatest-ever bands, but one whose legend has grown over the years. Finally, with the release of these 2 titles, all 5 studio albums have now been reissued in deluxe versions by Aztec Music." Digitally remastered, includes 2 bonus tracks.

Buffalo
Mother's Choice
PS, AUSTRALIA "The final 2 Buffalo albums have long been unjustly underrated when compared to the 1,2,3 punch of Dead Forever..., Volcanic Rock and Only Want You For Your Body. Management's decision to sack 'uncontrollable' original guitarist John Baxter and pursue a more commercial direction was also borne of the frustration of the constant grind of the road, declining record sales and no support from radio or TV. It was probably a mistake; Buffalo never really recovered from the change in dynamic, and the next 2 years saw a revolving door of replacement guitarists. However, to write this period off is also a mistake. Both albums contain terrific tracks that can sit proudly amongst any of Buffalo's earlier classics. Mother's Choice: The band wanted to call the album Songs For The Frustrated Housewife or Thieves, Punks, Rip-Offs & Liars but were overruled by their record company. Norm Roue (Band Of Light) joined as a second guitarist, but before the twin guitars of Roue and John Baxter could gel, Baxter was ousted and replaced by Karl Taylor. The band's sound changed immediately, with a more predominant rock 'n' roll edge, songs like their cover of the Chuck Berry classic 'Little Queenie' and 'Lucky' were perfect vehicles for Roue's boisterous slide and the southern rock-like 'Taste It Don't Waste It' was positively funky! Unfortunately, before Buffalo could build on the momentum of their new direction, Roue left and was followed soon after by Taylor. New guitarist Chris Turner joins before the album is released. Both titles are presented in 6 panel digi-paks with 20-page booklets filled with rare photos & liner notes by Ian McFarlane. They have been digitally remastered, and each release has 2 bonus tracks."

Outhood EP
PS, US "This piece of artwork can be easily considered as something close to modern micro-baroque. Two Dumb-Unit heads from Moscow play street-organ and forecast the future. While being full of warm and cozy dreams they call to the hide-land you've never been thrown to. The three track EP is very deep and dreamy. Cantu-Ledesma, Jefre
The Garden of Forking Paths
PS, JAPAN Jefre-Cantu Ledesma is a San Francisco based artist and musician. He is a founding member of Tarentel and since 1995 has recorded and toured in the US, Europe & Japan with the group. In 2000 after a much needed break from the band schedule he began making solo music under the name Colophon. In 2003 Love Loops was released on the Temporary Residence label as part of their mail order only Travels In Constance series. In 2004 he started the Root Strata label and has released recordings from a wide variety of musicians such as Yellow Swans, Grouper & My Cat is An Alien. The Garden Of Forking Paths is the first full length solo CD by San Francisco based musician Jefre Cantu-Ledesma. Eschewing the laptop processing of his earlier work as Colophon, the album was created with an assortment of tape recording mediums (Cassette, Micro-Cassette, Reel to Reel tape machine) and a small arsenal of guitar stop boxes used on wide variety of instruments from electric guitar to bowed gong. In addition to recording at his home studio, various sites found in the near by Marin Headlands just north of San Francisco were used for live outdoor site specific recording. With its title taken from a short story by Jorge Luis Borges, the album is overtly concerned with dreams, memory, death, birth, infinity and the possibility of a labyrinth like approach to music making, where songs are not written as much as they slowly emerge out of the process of music making.

Case, Neko
Live from Austin, Texas
Following the release of her third album Blacklisted, Neko Case's reputation was beginning to expand beyond the boundaries of the alt-country community when she appeared on the celebrated roots music television showcase Austin City Limits, and Live from Austin, TX preserves the full 14-song set Case played for ACL's studio audience on August 9, 2003. Case's accompaniment is simple and spare on this set -- Jon Rauhouse on guitar, banjo and pedal steel, Tom V. Ray on bass and Kelly Hogan on vocal harmonies -- but Case's warm, rich voice is big enough to fill the room all by itself, and her partners provide just the right accents for the sad but resonant songs that dominate this performance. Perhaps Case's greatest virtue is her ability to sing with strength and authority without sounding histrionic, and that gift dominates this album; listen to her take on "Deep Red Bells" and you'll notice that while she gives a passionate performance that's deeply emotional and physically expressive, she has an intuitive sense of when to go full out and when to ease back, and the dynamics of the number are gorgeous, especially with just Rauhouse's banjo and Ray's bass filling out the arrangement. Live from Austin, TX is less ambitious than Case's 2004 live effort The Tigers Have Spoken, in terms of both accompaniment and material, but there's a simplicity and cohesion to this set that's beautiful and satisfying, and anyone who has been impressed with the artistry of her studio work (especially 2006's brilliant Fox Confessor Brings the Flood) will want to hear this concert in which her voice is given free reign." Crowded House
Farewell to the World
PS, US Though American pop enthusiasts will invariably associate Crowded House with two late eighties hits - "Don't Dream It's Over" and "Something So Strong" - the band culled a much broader (and more tenacious) following on an international level, despite constant shifts in membership. As led by the Finn brothers, the group issued a long string of singles in Europe and Australia during the '80s and '90s, many of which became instant megahits. House held its final concert in Sydney, Australia c. November 1996; that concert now appears in this home video issue. Tracks include: "Better Be Home," "Fingers of Love," "Only Natural," "Whispers and Moans," "Private Universe," "Locked Out," "World Where You Live," "Mean to Me," and many more. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

Deathprod
Deathprod (4XCD)
PS, NORWAY Repressed! What was once one of the most acclaimed releases of 2004 will be available one last time. Beautifully-packaged 4CD boxset (4 digipaks in a heavy-duty box, nearly all black packaging). Includes the 2004 album Morals And Dogma (which is also available separately), plus reissues of the 3 prior albums: Reference Frequencies, Treetop Drive, Imaginary Songs From Tristan de Cunha, with 32 pages of liner notes, all eloquently designed by Kim Hiorthøy. These four CDs here document the period from 1991 to 2001. Treetop Drive from '95 and Imaginary Songs From Tristan Da Cunha from '94, both remastered and included here in full, were originally released in limited editions of 500 copies. In his music laboratory in Oslo, Deathprod (Helge Sten) works at the threshold between the latent potential of musical technology and the forms of life that sound assumes: the life of vibrations; the life of imagination. Deathprod is suggestive of last and first things, physical decay and the processes of production, decomposition and composition, the breaking down of sound that precedes fresh musical creation. A guiding principle in Deathprod's laboratory work is that his music should have the capacity to evoke images without becoming excessively programmatic. He references the soundtracks made by Florian Fricke and his group Popol Vuh to accompany films by Werner Herzog. The Reference Frequencies series of nine live electronic improvisations was made in 1991, recorded to cassette using unpromisingly basic electronic equipment. Loops mysteriously slide from the groove of repetition into swirling forms and cryptic atmospheres. Layers thicken, some congeal and sink as others thin and evaporate in glistening spray. Figures stalk through clouds; strange topographies form from molten matter then dissolve in crystalline streams; curious stories in remote languages cry out to be deciphered. Imaginary Songs from Tristan da Cunha is an extraordinary adventure in ethnographic surrealism that began when Sten graduated from the Trondheim Art Academy. Tristan da Cunha is the most remote island in the world, a volcanic mound in the distant reaches of the South Atlantic. Treetop Drive, from 1993 and 1994, opens with a symphonic ending, a dying fall severed from some massive structure and reanimated as another music. Last and first things; the afterlife of a final chord; classical closure reversed by means of sampling and a homemade feedback device.

In Memoriam: 1941-2006
PS, US This is Desmond Dekkers last ever recording. It was produced at Roll Over Studios in London on January 2004 and features Desmond Dekker (vocals), Steve Roberts (guitar), Aubery Mulrain (keyboards), Gordon Mulrain (bass), Michael Rose (tenor sax), Eddy Thornton (trumpet), and Leroy Green (drums). Rude-boys icon Desmond Dekker wrote his most memorable songs as an observer of everyday life. He emphasised how politics was not an interest. And so, in his own words, he regarded himself as a newscaster. I just write what I see and hear happen and I present that to the people if they werent there to let them know what was happening. -Desmond Dekker, 2002. Dream, The
Get Dreamy
PS, SPAIN "This heavily Hendrix-influenced psychedelic gem was issued in Norway, as an export-only LP in 1967. Having become a sought-after collector's item ever since, it features a full-set of psychedelic effects, with back-running guitars, psychedelic guitars and wah-wah everywhere, lots of keyboard and some very wisely (and seldomly) used orchestration. Some tracks ('Hey Jimi,' 'Do You Dream') sound as if you were listening to Hendrix himself, and also very recommended are the trippy instrumental 'Night of the Lonely Organist and his Mysterious Pals' and the opening track 'Green Things (From Outer Space),' while a couple of interesting ballads round up the record."

Eloe Omoe
Marauders
PS, US "Eloe Omoe is the Boston, MA duo of Sam Rowell (bass) and Tim Leanse (drums). For the uninitiated and other strangers to Eloe Omoe's aural assault, I have described them as relentless 'free-sludge.' Their challenging and rewarding sound could be compared to both the depths of early free-jazz and the over-the-top amplifier worshipping metal of the legendary godheadSilo. But more than anything, the music is akin to the unpredictable shift of a group of sharks than to normal song structure. This is crisp and extreme rock rejection. From the first note of the first song, you are instantly sucked into the undertow and already past the point of no return. Churning and chugging bass that sounds as if 8 arms are striking the strings in a battle to keep time with the insanity of the spastic and shifting drums. An album that reveals more subtleties and gets better with each listen, Marauders is an impressive debut that has been long overdue."

Far Corner
Endangered
PS, US Far Corner was formed in the Spring of 2003. This quartet of keyboards, cello, bass, and drums blends contemporary classical chamber music with One can hear influences from Stravinsky and Bartok and other contemporary classical giants, as well as from some of the great progressive rock bands of the 1970s. On their second album, Far Corner combine and contrast group improvisation with completely scored works, composed in a contemporary, post- Bartokian style. Since their debut album in the fall of 2004, the band has kept up a steady performance schedule, with some highlights being performing at Progday in North Carolina in 2005 and opening up for Ozric Tentacles in summer, 2006. All four members of the group are well seasoned pros in either classical/ contemporary classical or rock/progressive rock or both. "Keyboards, cello, bass and drums cooperate for instrumental 'chamber rock' - a synthesis of a heavier progressive style with acoustic elements like cello...with the cello often following a perfectly-intoned tenth above, resulting in a slithery, silky undertow for the band.... Mind-blowing.... fun to listen to."-Keyboard

Fennesz
Endless Summer
PS, AUSTRIA This reissue of Christian Fennesz's breakthrough classic Endless Summer has been remixed, remastered, and re-released with two extra tracks. Originally released in 2001 by Mego, Endless Summer brought his name and music towards the first steps of mainstream recognition with its micro sounds and warm guitar, harkening the dreamy serenity and quick-fading sentimentality of a California sunset. Following on from the more experimental Hotel Paral.lell and the Beach Boys homaged Plays single, Endless Summer brought the guitars more to the front, the electronics shimmered more, and the melodies shined more brightly. It went on to be a classic of its time, topping many end of year polls. This new definitive edition is newly mixed by Fennesz, resulting in a more open-sounding version of the tracks, especially the marimba driven "Caecilia" and the hypnotic "Before I Leave," and the towering "Happy Audio." It is also re-mastered by Denis Blackham at Skye, and has beautifully photographed artwork by Jon Wozencroft. In addition to the original 8 tracks, it contains 2 extra titles: "Badminton Girl," originally released in 2001 as part of the Split Series #15 12" with Main on Fat Cat Records, now out of print, and "Endless," which is previously unreleased until now.

Four Star Alarm
S/T
PS, US This debut is a promising post punk start point for a band bound to make noise. Feat. guitarist Jeff Dean of The Bomb & The Story So Far w/ newcomers Theodore Moss (Vocals) & Mike Horick (drums), they take cues from the mid 90's American indie underground while laying claim to a sound uniquely their own. There's no pretension here, only scratch & grind & some god damn good songwriting too.

Foxx, John
Cathedral Oceans
PS, UK John Foxx's Cathedral Oceans is a 20 year project combining ambient music with his own photographs that slowly morph into each other to create the effect of a 'moving stained glass window'. Sounding like a mix of Brian Eno and the soundtrack to A Clockwork Orange, highlights include the exquisite 'Through Gardens Overgrown', 'Fog Structures' and 'The Shadow Of A Woman's Hand'. Track listing: Oceanic, Through Gardens Overgrown, Spiral Overture, The Shadow of a Woman's Hand, Radial Harmonics, Serene Velocity, Fog Structures, Eternity Sunrise, Harmonia Mundi, City of Endless Stairways, In Rising Light, Metanym.

Ghosts
Blue Birds Bloods
PS, US Mathew Sawyer is an internationally respected visual artist, vintage ukelele aficionado, & one time drummer for the Television Personalities. He's also the man behind The Ghosts, a London based band whose music has been described by turns as "quietly romantic", "unsettlingly simplistic", & "Hank Williams is at the Ronettes' house putting up some shelves w/Mo Tucker & gossiping about Jonathan Richman while Townes Van Zandt sings Raincoats covers. The Ghosts first official full length, really boils down to, though, is simply 12 tracks of pure punk'd up, folk'd out, lo-fi love songs; a good, solid 40 minutes of uneasy listening.

Giffoni, Carlos
Arrogance
PS, US Five chapters of sound inspired by one of the most powerful and complex emotions of humankind. Arrogance is a departure from the digital machine insanity of his previous full length release, Welcome Home (Important Records), for a world of total analog electronics, primal energy, walls of monumental sound and precise attention to layers - creating massive slowly evolving structures that are both beautiful and terrifying. Arrogance is the first CD release on the No Fun Productions label. Recorded live with no overdubs in Brooklyn during a 12 month period by Carlos Giffoni and mastered by James Plotkin. Cover artwork by award winning artist/designer Megan Ellis. Carlos Giffoni is a musician, composer, inventor, improviser, teacher, curator and programmer. Born in Venezuela but living in New York now for over 6 years, he has been releasing music since 1998 including live collaborations and recordings with Merzbow, Jim O'Rourke, Pita, Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo, and others.

Han's Grusel's Krankenkabinet
Another Miserable Day
PS, BELGIUM "San Francisco's most German electronic creeper Hans Grüsel does it again, after seeing their amazing performance at No Fun this year I couldn't wait to do a record with these weirdos! Amazing layered synth madness!! Using a mountain of instruments I never heard of, these 2 long compositions give you the worst melancholic Sunday afternoon feeling, the party is over, and all you're left with is a horrific hangover that will never leave you, thinking of the carnival the night before, this is another miserable day indeed, you'll have to wear the hottest costume again, your head is made of wood and nothing makes sense anymore... this is beautiful analog electronic composer/concrète madness with an old piano trumpet sauce, every time you'll find new sounds!!! Also, be sure to find them live somewhere, the only band that can actually play music while wearing huge wooden houses on their heads... the cover for this record is the second in a series of 5 LPs with 6 panel fold out covers by Snotyfus! This one has a huge green wooden house raster on the outside and a full color village krank on the inside! Limited to 500 copies!"

Harper, Arthur Lee
Dreams and Images/Love is the Revolution
PS, KOREA "Dreamy folk psychedelia! Rare 2 LPs on 1 CD." 2002 grey-area reissue of the 2 albums released by Arthur Lee Harper: Dreams And Images from 1968 and Love Is The Revolution from 1969. The first one was originally issued on Lee Hazelwood's LHI label, with just an artist name of "Arthur" (he's not connected to Arthur Lee of Love in any way, so don't even think about getting confused). Hazelwood contributed liner notes to the first album, referring to Arthur's baroque, ultra-soft pop as "a tear looking for a thirsty eye"! Pretty cool, if in an extremely wilted-way - don't breath too heavy while listening to this, the clouds might all fall down. This CD includes his complete early recordings; in 2003 the RD label issued an LP-only collection of later recordings.

Hendrix, Jimi & The Experience
3 Nights At Winterland (6XCD-BOX)
PS, UK "Six complete October 1968 Winterland performances, presented together for the first time, officially licensed from the estate of Hendrix's former manager, Michael Jeffery, numbered, limited edition - only 2000 copies world-wide. The more than 6 hours of live music assembled here gives Hendrix fans the first opportunity to compare The Experience's live performances: 2-performances per night and 3-days recorded during the band's temporary residence at San Francisco's Winterland arena. Given that these recordings have been assembled from a variety of different sources, the sound quality (with the exception of the last 3 tracks on Disc 3, which, as the soundboard tape mysteriously stopped running, have been taken from a less-than perfect audience recording) is excellent, and as usual, Jimi's virtuoso delivery is as varied and unpredictable as ever, as are the technical problems which were invariably the sub-text of the majority of Hendrix concerts. This limited edition box set transports the listener back in time to the heady days of late '60s San Francisco, and gives those who never had the good fortune to witness an Experience concert the chance to hear 6 without even leaving home!" High Mountain Tempel
Pacific Sky Burial
PS, US Calling all Space Brothers! The new disc from High Mountain Tempel is here. "Pacific Sky Burial" (Axaxaxas mlo) touches down this February. This California Duo consists of Eric Nielsen (of both Maquiladora and Buzz or Howl) and Keith Boyd. This is their first flight into the ether together. Eric has played with members of such highly respected avant garde groups as Acid Mothers Temple , High Rise, White Heaven, Mainliner, Mus, The Black Heart Procession, etc. On "Pacific Sky Burial" they aim their sound towards both inner and outer space. Creating dense soundscapes and sonic stories, their music touches on elements of Krautrock and such musicians as Lustmord, Harry Partch, Coil and Zombi. Along with these spacier elements, there is a free-form and hybrid spirituality to this music that is of a particular West Coast and Pacific variety. The overall effect results in the kind of music Eno would make for a Philip K. Dick film set in Tibet . This limited edition disc is a labor of love and comes in a silk-screened cover with unique black on black discs. So, let the count down begin. Set the controls for the heart of the sun and journey to the limitless dimensions of inner space with High Mountain Tempel and their debut release, "Pacific Sky Burial".

Isabelle Antena
Carpe Diem + Extras
PS, UK 22 tracks. Isabelle Antena, is an acclaimed easy and electro-samba pioneer from Paris. Originally released on Les Disques du Crepuscule in November 1992 (in Japan and France only), Carpe Diem was recorded with musicians including Marco De Meersman (drums) and Fritz Sundermann (guitar) at Studio Caraibes in Brussels. Isabelle produced the album herself, which has rightly come to be regarded as a milestone. The vibe is chiefly cool jazz, latin and bossa, and complements perfectly Isabelle s warm voice and soft, sensual lyrics, never more so than on Corto Prend le Large and E Preciso Perdoar. Carpe Diem represents Isabelle s personal affirmation of life and music, following the tragic death of her husband and musical partner Dirk Schoufs (previously with Vaya Con Dios). The song Corto Prend le Large stands as a particularly heartfelt tribute to Dirk. The extended 66 minute CD also includes all 10 extra tracks from Isabelle s previous album, Les Derniers Guerriers Romantiques, released in April 1991, and recorded by Isabelle with Dirk Schoufs and a crack team of crack jazz and bossa musicians. Artist biography: chic trio Antena formed in Paris in 1981. After scoring cult hits with wry single The Boy From Ipanema and classic mini album Camino Del Sol in 1982, the band left Crepuscule for major label releases on Island and Mercury. Going solo, Isabelle Antena returned to Crepuscule in 1986, and since then has released a further twelve albums, her writing spanning jazz, funk and latin, and achieving notable success in Japan and the Far East. The most recent Isabelle Antena album, Easy Does It, appeared in 2005. The new Antena album, Toujours du Soleil, was released in April 2006.

Isles, The
Summer Loans
PS, UK This is a CD single and 7" release by NYC's The Isles (Benjamin Haberland, Chris Bordeaux, Andrew Geller, Tim McCoy). It's been a good stretch of success for the New York foursome, with their debut album Perfumed Lands ("A slow burn album for all seasons..." (8/10) -NME) prompting positive reviews, and so it's no surprise they want to extend it for as long as possible. The new single "Summer Loans" has an unmistakably East Coast groove but such an intrinsically familiar tapestry of woven guitar parts and vocal melody, you'll swear you've been getting up to dance to it for the last ten years. Lovingly put together in their self-made studio, Summer Loans manages to capture the echo of the great New York outdoors as well as the claustrophobia of the great New York sprawl. They're a curious distillation of Brit-pop and East Coast punk and honorary Mancunians in spirit and sound.

Kalkbrenner, Paul
ReWorks 2
PS, GERMANY This is a pretaster of Paul Kalkbrenner's ReWorks album. He asked some of his friends, whom he also very much appreciates musically, for remixes. The result is a wonderful remix album that gives a new touch to some of Kalkbrenner's greatest tracks. On the A-side is Ellen Allien & Apparat's remix of "Queer Fellow," with melodic and swinging beats which jump around happily, then break, facet and beat again. On the B-side Modeselektor are a techno march band, while Agoria's remix features a beat that lays itself upon you hypnotically, backed by a great accordion line from the original.

Magic Whispers, The
Carousels and Music Boxes
PS, SPAIN Ana Laan (Rita Calypso) and Natalia Farrán (Bathing Beauty) are indeed The Magic Whispers and they return with 17 sublime songs: a perfect combination of acoustic and electric guitars and gorgeous vocal harmonies with blissful pop melodies. A world without The Magic Whispers? It's just too horrible to comprehend. Their private rooms and secret chambers were divulged at Yin yang (2003), and now there is a second chance to penetrate their soul through Carousels and music boxes, an amazing collection of superb pop music. Song for song, this record is one of the most satisfying Siesta discs in the last five years thanks to the sophomore momentum. With their infallible knack for pop melodies, and the winsome charm of their voices, they are on the cusp of naivety and sophistication. The Magic Whispers are a little ray of sunshine in our otherwise barren lives. After their acclaimed debut album, The Magic Whispers did not want to rest on its laurels and were anxious to bring another platter of peerless musical treasures. Only the deaf could resist the exquisite tunes, fertile romanticism and the ingenious arrangements combined with those voices to create something remarkably fresh and pure. Their appeal should catapul them to microfame. The Magic Whispers are a great group that never goes out of style. This record will solidify themselves as one of the best girl groups (Strawberry Switchblade, Ephemera, Pipettes, Siddeleys, Girls at our best, Carousel, Popinjays, Marine Girls, The Would-be-goods, Sambassadeur, Dolly Mixture...). They resemble the traditional pop of the 1960s and 1980s added a modern twist. There are coquettish songs that are refined with playful intonations and light instrumentation, romantic anthems to love, and different flirts that are meant to bring joy, light and inspiration to the pop scene of the present days. Every generation, of course, has its invigorating progenitors of taste. For nerds here is a list of the original songs and legendary and obscure bands behind them: Hot rain- Someone Else's Love; My Guru Says- Sally and John; Po!-Appleseed Alley; Fantastic something-Drawing Rooms ; The Hit Parade-Groovy Heart Attack; The Impossibles-Meet Me Again; Carole King para The Shirelles- Will You Love Me Tomorrow?; Jacques Brel/ BMX Bandits-Carousel; Popinjays- Helicopter People; Coloring book- Time To Grow; Malcolm Eden/Herzfeld- Two Mothers; Mosquitos- Blue Heart ;Klaus Cornfield/ Throw that beat in the garbage can- Like Christmas.

Martinez
Restructured Layers
PS, DENMARK This is the Out of Orbit label's first CD release, providing a comprehensive and exciting mega-mix of their musical catalog, mega-mixed by DJ, producer and label-boss, Martinez. Techno has always been a musical genre driven by novelty and technology. Fast kicks and new sounds, feelings and experiences are what we cherish. The ability to project the listeners "out there" into the final frontiers of space and sound has always been the goal of all extraordinary techno music. To simply make a "normal" mix CD was never an option for Out of Orbit. Using cutting edge technology and displaying in what direction the future of mixing might take, Triple-O presents Restructured Layers, for people who have been looking for a way to enjoy their music in a comfortable way without getting into vinyl. Perfectly geared to fit in between both a sweaty club experience and a nice home listening session, this CD brings out the best of both worlds. This CD is an extension of Martinez' acclaimed DJ gigs, bringing you a world-class mix experience. With all their releases cut up into loops and pieces, Martinez has woven a beautiful and intricate carpet of sounds, putting two and two together in order to create something bigger and more beautiful than its mere parts: pure alchemy, in other words, with the full CD as a constant mix throughout the full 76 minutes. Blending pieces of up to 7 or 8 different tracks at the same time, you've never heard anything exactly like this, although Richie Hawtin's DE9|Closer To The (R)Edit would be the closest in terms of mixing technology. Triple-O has put down a lot of effort in order to bring you this next-step experience to and they are damn proud of what they have created. Featuring artists Phil Stumpf, Willie Graff & Kyle Errison, Martinez, Nima Gorji, Reynold, Lowtek Soundsystem, Zvukbroda, Dibaba, Mars Fellows, Felix Houzer, Jussi Pekka, Robert Babicz, Trentemøller, Cantrip People and Ibn Al-Khimyia.

Miyatani, Daisuke
Diario
PS, GERMANY Daisuke Miyatani lives on the Awaji Island in Japan and usually works in a bookshop. Maybe that is where he finds the rest and silence to create his fragile compositions. Or it is his Japanese cultural background that leads to the calm, haiku-like miniatures. Daisuke establishes a reduced and minimal approach mostly based on guitars, accompanied by xylophones and other instruments. The songs have an open character, with a lot of silence, and repetition. These elements are contrasted with more ambient-like, electronically composed material. Hence the album is a fruitful interplay between constant atmospheres and point-like acoustic notes. Most of the songs include fieldrecordings which are rather subtle, underlying. All the electronic elements still have an annalog character, fitting with the dominating acoustic instruments. "Diario" establishes a warm and calm atmosphere and yet avoiding to be a trivial album. The techniques of minimalism, repetition, integration of concrete sounds, electro-acoustic combination are all used in a very discrete way. The result is an interesting album very comfortable to listen to. He has released several works on different, mostly Japanese labels. There are definitely parallels to Yuichiro Fujimoto's work, who also releases on Ahornfelder. The CD comes in a matt Digipack with detailed collage-artwork.

Officerfishdumplings Finds Your Way Home
PS, US If the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and all roads lead to Rome, then either Rome is hell, or hell is on the way to Rome. But Rome is not officerfishdumplings' proposed final destination. When officerfishdumplings finds your way home, he takes you on a meticulously designed roller coaster ride through bouncy and poised, glitchy and clean, dancy and trippy, dense and spacious, firey and cool, far-east and neareast, equatorial and arctic, time and distance, rock and roll. He guides you all the way, but the ride is yours to make and keep. A detour from the ubiquitous tedium. A stroll through the 4th dimension. A potential utopia in the making... When you finally make it home, you will never want to take the old tired way home ever again. Actual review on the Internet from Malaysia: "[officerfishdumplings' music] had a very tropical feel about it, like listening to lounge music on the lobby floor inside a 3 star hotel in the Caribbean...

Proswell
Bruxist Frog
PS, US Chicago's Joe Misra aka Proswell took just enough time out of his busy schedule studying IDM clichés to compile a fourth long player for Merck, just before they close their doors. "Bruxist Frog" is Proswell's fourth album to date, and will be one of the final two CDs released on Merck. With material from the last few years that has been finely tuned and polished this fall, it has worked itself out to over 60 minutes of music. Uniquely nostalgic, it rises up to overtly dense 8-bit pop, and down into off-world colony lounge music. It continues the timeline and progression of his work into more sophisticated production methods and complex sounds and beats. Proswell's previous material includes his critically acclaimed albums Konami and Carrot Dossier, as well as a special selection of live tracks melded together for the Merck Mix Series (4). Radio Dept
Pet Grief
PS, SWEDEN NOW ON VINYL TOO!!! Limited edition vinyl LP from this popular Swedish group. In the fall of 2005 The Radio Dept. threw away a practically finished album because it "sounded very electronic and too many bands were doing that kind of pop already". Six months of fighting in front of the computer and tearing on each other later they've finished their new album "Pet grief". An album that is everything we could ever wish for. When the band was asked to describe the period after "Lesser matters" we got this reply: Ideology, Amaterurism. Hype. Anst. Touring. USA. XL Recordings. Shelflife. England. "Get a drummer!". Fighting. Holland. Beligum. France. Spain. Italy. Germany. Angst. Euphoria. Mitt Sista Liv. Pary. Sonic. NME. Digfi. Work. Friends. Enimies. Separation. Unemployment. Money. Poverty. Reecord label. Fighting. Sophia Coppola. Spring. Summer. Autumn. Winter. Björnstorp. Winter. Malmö. Stockholm. Art. Pop music. "Pet grief" is a completely different album than the debut "Lesser matters".Still, you'll hear from the very first chord that you're listening to The Radio Dept. The mood is darker, more epic, grander and even more beautiful than ever. "Pet grief" is the best songs Pet Shop Boys never wrote and the album you'd hoped My Bloody Valentine did after "Loveless". The key to what makes it so special, what makes it all sound so much like The Radio Dept. might be the ever present melancholy that permeate everything they write. It's been three years since the debut album "Lesser matters" was released (two since it was released by XL in the UK) and even if the band has released two Eps, "Pulling our weight" (2003) and "This past week" (2005) since that "Pet grief" is definitely the most anticipated Swedish album in a very, very long time.

Satie, Erik
Dada Works & Entr actes
PS, UK CD collection of Dada-related works by French avant-garde composer Erik Satie (1866-1925) including scores for Francis Picabia, Tristan Tzara, Kurt Schwitters and Rene Clair. An enthusiastic Dada activist in Paris between 1920 and 1924, Erik Satie collaborated extensively with Tzara, Man Ray, Pablo Picasso and Jean Cocteau, wrote often in Picabia s journal 391, and was a sworn enemy of the Surrealist faction lead by Andre Breton. According to Man Ray, Satie was the only composer who had eyes. All of Satie s principle Dada-related works are included on this unique CD: Trois morceaux en forme de poire, performed by Satie in July 1923 at Tzara s notorious Soirée du Coeur a barbe, at which fighting broke out between Tzara s supporters and the proto-Surrealist faction. Ragtime Dada, an extract from the ballet Parade performed at a series of Dada soirees by Kurt Schwitters and Theo van Doesburg in 1922. Entr acte and Cinéma, both scores for Francis Picabia s dazzling multi-media instantaneist ballet Relâche performed in 1924. Cinéma was Satie s custom score for the celebrated intermission film by René Clair, while for their curtain call Satie and Picabia drove onstage in a tiny car, resplendent in jewels and furs, the whole production amounting to an act of anti-art provocation. Both are Satie s arrangements for solo piano. The 70 minute CD (40 tracks) is performed on piano by Bojan Gorisek, while the booklet features archive images and detailed historical notes by James Hayward.

Sexsmith, Ron
Time Being (ON SALE)
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Time Being reunites the Canadian singer/songwriter with producer Mitchell Froom. As the man behind the glass for almost all of Sexsmith's work in the mid- to late '90s, Froom adapted his rhythmic, hyper-compressed production style to the singer's laconic pop confections with both grace and restraint, resulting in some of the decade's craftiest and coolest adult alternative rock. Like all Ron Sexsmith albums, Time Being is reliable and expertly crafted, and contains a handful of cuts that will kick around in your head until the next one swoops in to replace them.... Songs like "Hands of Time," "I Think We're Lost," and the nostalgic "All in Good Time" are all classic Sexsmith (characters looking for that elusive balance between melancholy and hope amidst midtempo acoustic landscapes), but one can't help but wish that he'd stir in a few more songs like "The Grim Trucker" into the pot. A surprising and enigmatic tale of culinary existentialism where Sexsmith adopts a mischievous Ray Davies croon over a serpentine, White Album-era Beatles-sounding arrangement, it offers the listener a glimpse into the kaleidoscope where Sexsmith fishes around for ideas...." Sharpiro, Sally
Disco Romance
PS, NETHERLANDS "The Swedish disco princess Sally Shapiro with her debut album Disco Romance! She became well-known in disco communities earlier this year with 'I'll By By Your Side,' which was rated 4.5 out of 5 by the highly acclaimed U.S. Pitchfork Media and was called an 'utterly perfect slice of italo synth-pop' in Vice Magazine. Sally (whose real name is a secret) is so shy that she refuses to record a music video, perform her songs live, let herself be photographed by someone she doesn't know, or even let her producer be in the same room when she's recorded. Actually that's all not important the deal is that we have an album full of italo disco inspired pop anthems! Obviously the sound is inspired by Italian '80s disco, and it's in the circles of I-f, Metro Area, Serge Clone, Daniel Wang, Glimmer Twins, Lindstrøm she'll find her fans." Given an 8.5 and "Best New Music" certificate at Pitchfork! Limited stock at the moment, more coming.

Star You Star Me
Simple Things
PS, GERMANY This is the debut full-length release from Finland's Star You Star Me, the electronic dance music band for the 21st century. Jani Lehto had been playing around with computers and synths his whole life when the deep house boom of the mid-'90s struck his home town of Turku. His house collective DSE reached for that warm New York sound, but with Star You Star Me, a new path was chosen. Tatu Metsätähti has already gained worldwide reputation in underground electro circles with his band Mr Velcro Fastener and Mesak solo project. His synth programming skills and musical ideas and visions double the creative potential of the duo. In late 2001, Tatu and Jani started swapping their unfinished tracks: if Jani had an idea for a track he gave it to Tatu, and then Tatu would continue the process, or vice versa. The first tracks were called "Disco Dancer," "Antidis," and "Loveletter," and two out of three were later released on Slip 'n' Slide Blue and Moodmusic Records, to impressive reviews. The sound of SYSM is a combination of minimal house grooves and emotional, high fidelity electronic soundscapes. It's easy to recognize a Star You track - fat retro disco drums beating on top of the most crisp and wide synth sounds, ever. Their vision of sound is coupled with the concept that music should always be momentous and not just entertaining - music should make people cry or laugh and give reasons to survive through the reality of day-to-day living. Star You Star Me is a return to the coolest disco sound re-energized for today's clubs, living rooms, media players and iPods. Includes a guest vocal appearance by Erlend Øye.

Stars of Track and Field
Centuries Before Love and War [re-release]
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "A bandmember's departure normally brings change in its wake, but for Stars of Track and Field it heralded not the expected arrival of a new bassist, but a shift in their very sound and modus operandi. The remaining trio members threw themselves headlong into the digital age, making new use of electronics and samples. The results are quite stunning, as Centuries Before Love and War, a follow-up to their self-produced debut EP, You Came Here for Sunset Last Year, proves. What hasn't changed is the Stars' glimmering, gloomy, shimmering, shambling style, but the electronics allow them to vastly expand their musical palette, add a plethora of shadings and textures to their songs, and evoke rock's rich past." PS, SPAIN "Amazing album from this obscure band from Malaysia, The Strollers, recorded in 1973. Symbion Project
Wound Up By God or the Devil
PS, US Wound up by God or the Devil is the soundtrack to a movie that has not yet been made. This is an album that symbion project did not expect to make; an album that you probably did not expect to hear. Encapsulated within are collisions of epic forces, chaotic sexuality, religious underpinnings, enlightened fragments of joy. During a brief, 3 week vacation from the recording of the soon to be released 3rd Freezepop album, Kasson Crooker (aka The duke from the synthpop trio Freezepop, also ex-Splashdown) wanted to focus on a collection of songs inspired by some of his favorite movie soundtracks. Moved by the epic nature of Vangelis (Bladerunner, Chariots of Fire) and retro/future aesthetic of Wendy Carlos (Clockwork Orange, Tron), Symbion Project created a "baroque minimalist electro" album that could live seamlessly in 1762, 1962 or 2162. Concerned with the nondynamic, robotic stagnancy of current electronic music, along with the overwhelming nature of being surrounded by a studio full of synthesizers and blinking audio gear, this album was crafted using only a single 32vco analog synthesizer. Very little was sequenced (except for the blazingly fast runs that Bach himself couldn't even do) and almost all the parts were played in by hand. Constant attention was given to exploiting and exaggerating the emotional tension of the songs through use of dynamics, from the initial songwriting to the final mastering (analog of course).

Tycho
Past Is Prologue Sampler
PS, US Past is Prologue is the new, fully re-mastered version of Tycho's debut full length "Sunrise Projector", which was released independently on Tycho's own imprint (Gammaphone Records) in fall 2004. The release was limited to mail-order and quickly sold out through the first two pressings. We are now proud to present a 12" sampler version of the Merck CD album. With revised art and fully re-mastered audio from Gammaphone version. This is the first time any of Tycho's music will be appearing on vinyl, and it includes remixes by Nautilis and Dusty Brown. Musically this release lies somewhere between label mates Helios and Machine Drum, with a touch of Malcom Kipe. Hip hop infused beats, hypnotic melodies and dynamic syncopated textures blend to create a dense, atmospheric listening experience. Limited 600. Portion on colored vinyl.

Magritte, le groupe Surréaliste de Bruxelles, Rupture Volume 2 (1926-1938)
PS, BELGIUM This second volume aural document is devoted to the Brussels Surrealist Group, 1926, following in the surrealist footsteps that Dada, Pansaers et Correspondance Volume 1 (1917-1926) established. On this compilation you can hear rare documents, including the voice of Magritte explaining why it's impossible to answer the questions of journalists. As a nucleus started forming in 1924 around Magritte, Nougé, Lecomte, etc., dissension arose, spawning Correspondance (1924-26). This release documents the editorial activities of Magritte and Mesens, the only issue of Sophage (1925), and the obvious influence of Dada (Schwitters was a contributor). The avant-garde is stateless, but this release, along with the other two releases in the series, limit themselves to the geographical space comprised between France, Germany and The Netherlands, where the main language is French. This region's experiments and discoveries are missing in French and international anthologies. This compilation, and the project as a whole, is an urgent attempt to document an important aspect of surrealism that most surely would have disappeared into dusty archives, if not released to the world. Other artists include: Louis Scutenaire, Marcel Mariën, Paul Colinet, André Souris, Paul Delvaux, Constant Malva, Achille Chavée and Fernand Dumont.

Viki
PS, US "Viki. Detroit, MI. A unique hybrid of industrial/noise and dance music created using her own modified instruments and processors. Inspired by the spirit of early hip-hop, yet mutated into a new sound of electronic urban decay, Viki remains more accessible and enjoyable than anything in the 'noise' scene that she usually gets lumped in with. This CD is a collection of the best of the early/rare and previously unreleased Viki tracks that have been collecting dust, begging to be heard again. This stuff was too good to let fade into obscurity so we dug into the archives and pulled out the very best. This CD features 15 classic Viki tracks from 1999-2004 and is a real treat."

Alsace Lorraine
Dark One (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MARCH 5TH )(ON SALE)
PS, US Alsace Lorraine is the delicately delicious and unique electronic/guitar pop creation of seminary professor Paul Francke. We're pleased to announce that our favorite singer on Earth, Argentinean Singer/Artist Isol has joined Alsace Lorraine to sing on four of the album's 14 tracks too. Isol sings here in English for the first time! Isol left her band Entre Rios (Elefant {Spain}/Darla {US}) when the group signed with EMI Latin America because the deal demanded too much time away from her profession as an Artist/Illustrator. Caitlin Brice sings backing vocals on two tracks. Jane Francke (Paul's sister) sings one track. The sophomore Alsace album Dark One, though not literally very "Dark", was recorded and mixed by Paul at Paul's home studio in Chicago. Isol's warm, exotic, sensual vocals were recorded in Isol's bedroom studio in Buenos Aires. Paul's unique bedroom uber-pop soundtrack provides the perfect music bed to Isol's vocal. The result is a unique blend of Astrud Gilberto, Wolfgang Press, Eurythmics, Pale Saints, St. Etienne, Magnetic Fields, Hope Sandoval, as well as The Wake, Section 25 and other Factory-esque influences. Hopefully, Paul and Isol will make more beautiful music together. Alsace Lorraine sounds romantic; thoughtful, sensuous and smart. Comment from Paul Francke: I began the album begun during college on the south side of Chicago and completed it while working in Campbeltown, on the end of the Kintyre Peninsula, the most remote part of mainland Britain. Between those points I worked on the record in an Episcopalian seminary dormitory in Alexandria, Virginia, while training to be a seminary professor. It couldn't have been done without my brilliant, non-religious friends: Isol sings four of the best songs on the album, but she also made important suggestions for changes to the lyrics and music. We share a lot of beliefs regarding art and beyond, and it has been fascinating to work with her. Her friend Nico recorded her vocals in a studio in Buenos Aires. Caitlin Brice, the lead singer from the previous album, sings excellent backup on two songs here. Joe Moore plays guitar on one song, and my younger sister Jane sings on one song as well.
