A Flock of Seagulls
S-T [re-issue]
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "The Liverpool quintet A Flock of Seagulls
first gained attention in the dance clubs with "Telecommunication,"
included on this debut release. The band benefited from heavy play
on MTV and quickly became known for their outrageous fashion and lead
singer Mike Score's waterfall-like haircut. However, their self-titled
debut is an enjoyable romp that was set apart from other synth-heavy
acts of the time by Paul Reynolds' unique guitar style. The kinetic
"I Ran (So Far Away)" became a video staple and a Top Ten
radio hit. "A Space Age Love Song," with its synthesizer
washes and echo-laden guitar, also managed to score at radio. The
rest of the album consists of hyperactive melodies, synthesizer noodlings,
and electronic drumming. The lyrics are forgettable. In fact, they
rarely expand on the song titles, but its all great fun and a wonderful
collection of new wave ear candy."

Moon Safari: 10th Anniversary Deluxe Edition [re-issue]
PS, US PREFIX MAG: "I don't remember getting the royal treatment
when I turned ten. But nowadays, whenever a landmark album reaches
its tenth anniversary, it gets the deluxe re-issue fete. Up this week:
Air's gorgeous, neo-disco masterpiece, Moon Safari. The package includes
two CDs and a DVD. Disc one contains the entire original album. The
second disc contains rarities, live tracks, and remixes by the likes
of Beck and the Moog Cookbook. The DVD features the Mike Mills documentary
Eating, Sleeping, Waiting and Playing, which chronicles Air's first
tour, as well as videos and new graphics by Mills. It all adds up
to three times the sexiness. Seriously, put this album on next time
you have that special someone over for a romantic evening."

PS, US POPMATTERS: "Forgoing lead guitar for shambling, sinister
organ licks, DC post-punk outfit the Apes strike a strange middle-ground
between minimalism and maximalism. Lacking guitar accompaniment, Jeff
Schmid's drums and and Erick Jackson's bass tend operate in spare
cages of plunging rhythms and blurting stabs, and when the keys afford
them some space, the whole feels crisply open. However, just as often
as organist Amanda Bynes allows herself to be constrained by the others'
rhythms, she surges past and breaks free, letting her organ swell
to fill every gap with psychedelic squeal."

Arthur And Martha
Autovia
PS, UK Featuring Adam of SALOON. "Gilbert & George, disguised
as The Carpenters, steal the hits of Kraftwerk and bash them out on
an old moog in the style of Section 25" Zoot Magazine Arthur
and Martha are stage names. Arthur and Martha are Adam Cresswell and
Alice Hubley. Adam was the founding member of beard-stroking folkatronica
indie-band, Saloon. They played lots of gigs, made some records, shot
to number 1 in John Peel's festive chart and then fell off the side
of the world. Alice was in party-girl band The Duloks (she was the
one who played the music) but wanting to wear something onstage other
than a PE kit or slutty nun's outfit, one night she jumped ship and
also fell off the side of the world. They met, picked themselves up
and on the side of a European autovia somewhere were born again as
Arthur and Martha. By bringing together their rag-tag collection of
moogs, melodicas and an antique drum-machine, they penned the songs
on this disc for you now. 'Autovia' is a foot to the floor 4/4 driving
song; like something Tom Petty would pen were he possessed by the
brain of Kraftwerk and the soul of a maladjusted robot. 'Japanese
Kiss' is the soundtrack to a messy break-up and inevitable argument
over custody of the Pet Shop Boys CD's. 'Squarewave to Heaven' is
the song that Led Zep would have made had Jimmy Page been influenced
by Morton Subotnick rather than Muddy Waters.

Autumns, The
Fake Noise from a Box of Toys
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Previous albums like In the Russet Gold
of This Vain Hour were full of shimmering, slowly unfolding dream
pop soundscapes directly influenced by the likes of My Bloody Valentine
and the Cocteau Twins, whose Simon Raymonde signed the Los Angeles
band to his Bella Union label some time back. There are intermittent
flashes of that sound on Fake Noise from a Box of Toys (notably on
"The Midnight Knock" and "The Beautiful Boot"),
but this is a far more immediate album overall. Points of comparison
this time aren't the wall-of-effects-pedals wash that Robin Guthrie
or Kevin Shields specialized in, but the self-consciously epic likes
of Simple Minds, U2, Radiohead, or even Coldplay: singer Matthew Kelly
tends to favor the highest end of his range à la Chris Martin
or Thom Yorke. Anthemic singalong choruses, catchy guitar riffs, and
layered harmonies -- things the Autumns never had much truck with
on their earlier albums -- are the focus of songs like "Boys,"
"Glass Jaw," and "Clem," any of which could conceivably
be mainstream alt-rock radio hits. That may sound like the Autumns
have abandoned themselves to the wider pop marketplace, but what's
most impressive about Fake Noise from a Box of Toys is that the group
maintains enough of their own musical personality on songs like the
swirling closer "Oh My Heart" and the dramatic high point
"Killer in Drag" that the more accessible songs sound like
evolution, not sellout."

Bailiff, Jessica & Annelies Monsere
Untitled EP
PS, BELGIUM Numbered limited edition of 310 in an LP like sleeve.
Annelies Monseré (Belgium/Bluesanct records) and Jessica Bailiff
(US/Kranky) met back in 2002, during Jessica's first European tour.
They've been frequently doing shows together since 2005. They've often
joined each other on stage, but recording together didn't happen until
they did a duo-tour in October 2007. On this occasion, they've totally
reworked two rare tracks of Jessica, and two yet unreleased songs
by Annelies. Although it's just the two of them, this ep has a very
built-up sound, which is reminiscent of Jessica's earliest output
and Annelies' most recent live shows. Vocals, guitars and cello- and
keyboard drones get a very prominent role on these recordings, which
were made entirely in the analog domain. The ep is limited to 310,
and comes in a mini-lp jacket. All copies are hand-numbered and have
hand-written liner notes by Annelies.

Calypso Shakedown
PS, US Not the Bus Stop Label's pop-obsessed artist, but a Chicago
18-piece boasting avant-rock pedigress harnessing their collective
powers for this breezy soul-funk de force. Although Calypso Shakedown
is in some respects a throwback to a lost era - an era characterized
by saccharine enforcement of smooth passion - one is impressed more
deeply on each listen by an irresistibly genuine quality, unmistakably
contemporary. Think Elliott Smith meets Lionel Richie, it's a little
bit like peanut butter and bananas. Now pour on some honey. There
is uncommon depth within these songs. Say whatever else you will about
it, but unfettered by convention and without affectation, there is
no denying Calypso Shakedown has loads of soul. Trombones flirt with
flutes atop the warm sonic glow of a Fender Rhodes, guitars mingle
with vibraphone and violin and cello soar over elaborate vocals. Throughout,
an uncommonly adept rhythm section (think rhythm and blues) forms
the backbone that speaks volumes and could move mountains.

Chandeliers
The Thrush
PS, UK Chandeliers are a Chicago_based quartet that represents a phenomenon
of unclassifiable modern music. Comprised of multi-instrumentalists
from Chicago's blossoming young avant-rock scene, they have created
a unique, and live, electronic sound. Adopting the collective spirit
of krautrock bands like Can and Faust, the Chandeliers function as
a unified whole, with no dominant members. This approach gives the
band a more intuitive and unpredictable approach to composing. the
sessions for The Thrush were overseen by Bablicon's Diminisher and
Blue Hawaii at the Shape Shoppe and at Mahjongg's west-side studio
in Chicago. Its nine songs feature guests musicians from Bablicon,
Icy Demons, and Mahjongg and includes 3 videos by filmmaker TJ Hellmuth.
Believing that colour can exist in harmony with timbre, the Chandeliers
pride themselves on their synaesthetic live performances: a non-stop
high-energy show, augmented with dual projections of Brakhage-esqe
visual rhythm. Chandeliers bring the energy of a super-live party
to their cerebral synth interplay. An obvious reference is Kraftwerk,
but with influences ranging from Burmese and Arabic melody, to the
sonically dirty rhythmic propulsion of Konono no.1, and the crunked-out
psychedelic hip-hop of J-Dilla, Chandeliers always keep the listener
on their toes. An album with the flow of a mix-tape, the Thrush is
at home bangin' in your trunk or hypnotizing on your headphones.

Chikinki
Lick Your Ticket
PS, UK Not content with pillaging the past for inspiration, this record
see the band take the ambitious step of plugging into the mains and
trying to blast themselves into the future. They bleep, bluster and
blister on this release, which successfully manages to combine their
love for electro-scuzz, hooky melodies and occasionally delicate guitars.
Drum kits are replaced by sensor pads and skittering electronica loops,
guitars are run through code-crunching banks of effects, and it seems
as if only the vocals tether the band down into conventional rock
territory: bounding between a stargazing croon ('Drink') or a Mick
Jagger yelp ('To Sacrifice a Child'), depending on whether the band
are luxuriating in warm keyboard textures or hurtling along at a rate
of electro-rock knots. 'Assassinator 13', is a rollicking opener with
a rib-vibrating bassline, destined to send a sticky crowd into convulsions.
'Ether Radio' sounds like Zoot Woman having fey fisticuffs with The
Coopers, but with more testosterone, whereas 'Hate TV', is a darkly
romantic electro-glam stomp of majestically wasted beauty. But, among
the album's twisted sexual traumas, soundclash confessionals and beat
_mashing party anthems, 'Scissors Paper Stone' stands out as an expansive
rock epic inspired by Chikinki's stadium-sized self-belief during
their early wilderness years. 'They steam through their rock-solid
wall of future hits with a rare, magnetic natural stage charisma'
NME. 'Incendiary sonic-assault shows, professorial keyboard genius
and a singer who dares to be Mick Jagger'. The Face. 'Smells like
the future of rock 'n' roll' The Fly.

ErikM
Steme
PS, AUSTRALIA Between his reputation as swift shifting improviser,
concrete composer and turntable deconstructionist, Marseilles based
artist ERIKM has earned himself an enviable position in the European
music community. With Stéme, his most ambitious and fully realised
compositional work to date, he devolves and re-contextualizes the
boundaries between sound source and sound media. In essence, Stème
originates from a selection of ten one minute long sound pieces burned
on a CD that was deliberately damaged. These media (music on modified
media or field recording) formed the basis of multiple improvised
session including multiple stages of construction and destruction
of these acoustic matters using my different electronic real time
live music systems (3k-pad8system & MD or CD-dj and electronics).
The resulting sounds are truly distinctive - filigree like sonic details
are brought into sharp focus, tuning the ears with their paced spatial
movements. Occasional grabs of the source sound material appear and
are erased equally as quickly. A genuinely powerful statement of compositional
intent. ERIKM has instinctively followed a relatively unusual, even
risky, career path. Stemming from his interest in visual arts and
his first musical experience as a rock guitarist, he has for some
years now become steadily more and more renowned for his virtuoso
turntabling and his use of electronic instruments and tools in an
integrated scenic set-up eRikm has followed up musical collaborations
with Voice Crack, Christian Marclay, Luc Ferrari, among others. He
is certainly one of the better-equipped artists of the new generation
to actually demonstrate a relationship between rock music (in its
widest sense) and contemporary music ; hiding behind neither cultural
camouflage nor an easy pandering to his audience.

Exciters, Thee
Spending Cash, Talking Trash
PS, UK When their "Dial 'E' for Excitement" (Dirty Water)
was released, NME said: conforming to the rule that any band who spell
"The" with two "e"s will always be beer-soaked
garage rockers, the second single from Thee Exciters comprises four
songs, each more beer-soaked and garage-rockin' than the last. Fittingly
for a band whose singer has a reputation for on-stage nudity, the
likes of "Ugly Face" and "Things Ain't Right"
are the kind of songs that in the unlikely event that they woke up
one morning as dogs would be muzzled, or at the very least made to
wear one of those funny plastic cones around their heads to stop them
chewing their own balls. An oblique recommendation, yes, but we're
standing by it. Mojo magazine, meanwhile, declared that: ...this band's
four tracker is shot through with a raging garage scuzz that is only
properly realised on black plastic. Songs tell of being driven wild
by young women, wanting to start a riot and, on "Ugly Face",
a lousy attitude. When vocalist Paul Le-Brock howls "I hate your
ugly face" you know the band mines the Nuggets motherlode. If
this is your kind of thing, a deep sense of well-being awaits. This
is a groovy, hip-shaking bastardization of the first Them album that's
been copulating with the energy of The Shadows of Knights. "Things
Ain't Right" is the Count Five reborn - psychotic reaction indeed!
But they're not completely lost in the art of retrofication since
they infuse a whole lotta punk attitude in their tunes. Yes! It's
righteous, strip-me-naked- and-paint-me FUZZ RAWK! Forget the Arctic
Monkeys or whoever is flavor of the month this month - dial "E"
for Exciters if you want your rock'n'roll party to kick some booty,
baby! This album includes both their soldout EPs and eight brand new
tracks - plus a complete live set recorded at the Dirty Water Club
as an added extra on the CD version - with fab cover art by renowned
Danish artist Niels Ejnar Rust.

Frank Black
Sv N F Ng Rs
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Just as Black Francis'Bluefinger was
a musical portrait of Dutch painter, poet and punk rocker Herman Brood,
Frank Black stays in a conceptual frame of mind with the mini-album
SVN FNGRS, which draws inspiration from the Irish mythological figure
Cúchulainn, who has seven fingers on each of his hands. Title
aside, the album's references to Cúchulainn aren't often apparent,
but what comes through loud and clear is how charged these songs are.
SVN FNGRS kicks off with "The Seus," an instant classic
in Black's catalogue. Burly guitars, a stuttering rhythm and layers
of Black's shouty vocals wrestle each other into a prickly, funky
groove, updating the weirdness, smartness and undeniable hooks of
Frank Black songs like "Los Angeles" and "Ten Percenter."
Black works his Stooges fetish harder than he has in years on "I
Sent Away," a song with jabbing riffs that rock harder than anything
on Bluefinger did. Though the set only has seven songs (of course),
it shows off Black's range, with softer and more vulnerable songs
like the sweetly ambling pop of "Half Man" and "Tale
of the Lonesome Fetter" providing the yin to some of the louder
tracks' yang. Song for song, this is one of Black's strongest solo
releases."

From Leaf to Feather
Themes on an Imaginary Winter
PS, US New acid-jazzy project featuring Snow & Voices' Lauri Kranz
on vocals. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "The debut album by Los Angeles quartet
From Leaf to Feather fits in with a recent spate of albums that blend
contemporary electronica and the sounds of 1960s pop music, such as
Caribou's Andorra and the self-titled debut of the Whitsundays. Later
for those albums' evocations of the Bee Gees and the Zombies, though:
the '60s icons that Themes on an Imaginary Winter puts the listener
in mind of include first-generation synth heroes like Bruce Haack
and the United States of America, bossa nova chanteuses of the Astrud
Gilberto stripe, and the middle-of-the-road easy listening pop of
the Ray Conniff Singers... Singer Lauri Kranz is used sparingly and
therefore never overstays her welcome, while keyboardist Steven Gonzalez
marries the old and the new gracefully. Far more melodically interesting
and musically varied than the average chillout album, Themes on an
Imaginary Winter is a most promising debut."

his career. Formed in Los Angeles in the early '80s, the band were
vaguely aligned with similarly roots-inspired groups like X and the

resting more comfortably around the New York downtown set and Pierce's

La Monja Enana
Humo y Espejos
PS, SPAIN LA MONJA ENANA is not your typical group with a defined
path. Throughout their long, and at times, slower than usual career,
they have played in Sweden, Russia, Paris and they put out a compilation
in France and Mexico. The band has also been Single of the Week in
Melody Maker. All of this happened without much effort from the group.
LA MONJA ENANA is relaxed because they know that every once in awhile,
without having to move a finger, something un-heard of happens and
changes their career. Perhaps its largely due to their scientific-literary-paranormal
theme in their music or it could simply be that when you listen to
their music without preconceived notions, you appreciate all of the
wonderful tunes with a catchy melody, a crystal and natural voice,
together with surprising sounds. The fact is, LA MONJA ENANA has numerous
fans in Spain anxiously waiting for the release of their album, "Humo
y Espejo." We are folks who sell out their concerts, sing along
to their songs and know the perfect gestures that go along with each
line. We understand the references of Philip K. Dick and Jack Clayton
in their older songs and with their brand new songs, we'll catch on
to the references of Lemony Snicket in "Café Kafka"
and of Jorgen Leth in "Humano Perfecto." We are people who
admire how all of this may convert into a song and sound so great,
catchy and melancholic at the same time. We are people who are elated
that a group like LA MONJA ENANA exists, because, someone finally
has written a song like "Heróes del Pasado" about
the glorious oldies and because they dare with one of the most unusual
songs by Jonathan Richman, "I'm a Little Dinosaur," offered
as a bonus track on the album. I have the amazing luck to have heard
and learned all of the new songs and that's why I must recommend,
a part from the previous new songs mentioned, the catchy "Canción
de Amor nº 3"- a musical story about the things a technopop
musician would do for love, with Battiato style guitars. The song
"Ciencia Cotidiana" is about all of the scientific phenomena
produced in our daily lives and is also another fine choice. Don't
miss out on "Trucos de Salón," "Raccord,"
"Nomeolvides" or "Veinte Preguntas" all of these
are fantastic songs about love, science and strange phenomena. This
is one of the amazing things about LA MONJA ENANA: their terrific
ability to speak about the rare stuff in life in a very simple and
down-to-earth way.

Leyers, Dirk
Alma
PS, GERMANY Dirk Leyers presents his first record for Klang Elektronik.
"Azul" is an impulsive track, with an anxious, meandering
bass line and bright synthesizer sounds, while the beat unerringly
gallops directly towards dancer's heaven. On the B-side, Dirk calms
down a little bit and begrudges us with a conveniently laid-back,
almost ambient piece of music called "Azur" before he relieves
us with the spheric, whispering "Alma."

M83
Saturdays = Youth (ON SALE)
PS, US New album! For M83's chief star-gazer Anthony Gonzalez, his
youth is something he looks back upon with affection, something that
has become the defining theme of his enchanting new album, Saturdays=Youth.
The idea of youth - wasted, gilded or otherwise - has featured prominently
in M83's music. From early fumblings like At The Party on 2001's self-titled
debut to the bliss-fuzz of Teen Angst from 2005's breakthrough album
Before The Dawn Heals Us, the French producer's dramatic space-rock
tends to evoke the innocence and wonder of this hormonally charged
time. But Saturdays=Youth is his most explicit celebration yet of
how it feels to be dazed, confused and 15 years old. "Saturday
is definitely the coolest day of the week for a teenager and that's
the reason Saturday is in the title," he says, as if it needed
explaining. "Saturday always reminds everyone of their youth".
The eighties styling extends to the artwork, featuring a host of characters
including a red-haired Molly Ringwald lookalike on the sleeve. Gonzalez
states his main influences as 80s English bands and classic John Hughes
teen movies such as The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles. "On
this record I wanted to have the feeling of a teenager mixed with
this period of the Eighties," he says. "I also wanted 11
different-sounding songs on the record - none of the songs sound the
same." That might be true, but they each sound distinctly, unmistakeably
M83. Recorded with Ken Thomas (Sigur Ros, Sugar Cubes, Cocteau Twins,
Suede) and Ewan Pearson (Tracey Thorn, The Rapture, Ladytron) Saturdays
= Youth delivers the rich sonic textures for which M83 is well known
-this time with a more focused approach to song structure and form.
M83 is Anthony Gonzalez. He lives in Antibes, France.

Mekons
The Mekons Story 1977-1982 [re-issue]
PS, US Originally released in 1982, also known as 'It Falleth like
the Gentle Rain from Heaven'. 'The Mekons Story' is a collection of
rare and unobtainable tracks from the UK punk legends Jon Langford
describes as 'our revenge on the world.' This 20 track CD includes
brilliant outtakes, unreleased tracks, alternate versions, B-sides,
as well as a handful of live radio sessions recorded between 1977
and 1982 during the first Mekons incarnation. With a drunken sounding
David Spencer providing a between cuts 'history' of the band, this,
more than any other Mekons recording, shows their crucial and comic
post-punk development. From cacophonic punk, primitive disco, agitated
funk and new wave, and synth pop, the consistent thread in this material
is the sheer brilliance of the Mekons' literacy in songwriting.

Motorpsycho
Little Lucid Moments (ON SALE)
PS, NORWAY With four long, energetic and evolving tracks ranging from
11 to 21 minutes, Little Lucid Moments is in every way what many hardcore
fans will consider to be classic Motorpsycho in full flight. The album
was recorded by Helge Sten and mixed by Jørgen Træen
(Jaga Jazzist, Sondre Lerche). Mastered by U.S. mastering guru, Bob
Katz. Motorpsycho was founded in 1989 in Trondheim, Norway's third
biggest city, when mainstays Bent Sæther (bass, vocals) and
Hans Magnus "Snah" Ryan (guitar, vocals) were joined by
drummer Kjell Runar "Killer" Jenssen. The first album, Lobotomizer,
was released in 1991 after which Killer quit and Håkon Gebhardt
took over the drums for many years to come. Gebhardt left in 2005
before the recording of Black Hole/Blank Canvas where Bent and Snah
did most of the drumming themselves. With Little Lucid Moments they
have a new, permanent drummer. Kenneth Kapstad is also a member of
Animal Apha and Monolitich and has played with Dadafon, Gåte,
Cucumber and Soundtank. Helge Sten, aka Deathprod, is back as a co-producer
of Lucid Little Moments, and Kim Hiorthøy also returns to design
the album sleeve. With 1993's Demon Box, Motorpsycho were already
laying down the blueprint for much of the stoner psychedelia that
would spawn a number of bands many years later. Since then, and several
albums later, they have developed their personal style to sometimes
include delicate use of brass, strings and other instrumentation,
even flirting with pop structures and shorter songs, but never abandoning
the original spirit of Motorpsycho and the long classic epics like
"Demon Box," "The Wheel," "The Golden Core,"
"Un Chien D'Espace," "Vortex Surfer" and "Radiator
Freak."

Mt. Wilson Repeater
S-T
PS, US After ten-plus years fronting Los Angeles' favorite sons, the
RADAR BROS., Jim Putnam now brings his acclaimed talent for composition,
melody and command of the studio to his new project Mt. Wilson Repeater.
Recorded in his renowned backyard studio in Atwater Village, CA, Mt.
Wilson Repeater is the sound of late nights at the piano, bourbon
in hand, after a day spent watching his dog Hal eat freshly fallen
grapefruit from the adjacent tree. Playing multiple instruments on
the album and utilizing many of the techniques learned from his father,
Bill Putnam, Jim delivers masterful recordings of his trademark aesthetic.
This self-titled debut expresses that warm southern California sun
worshipped by Putnam, the Radar Bros. and their fans yet the similarities
between Mt. Wilson Repeater and the Radar Bros. suddenly come to an
abrupt end. Vocals take a backseat to music on this album-if they
get in the car at all-serving more as an integral part of the sound
and instrumentation rather than as a point of focus. Jim creates lush,
psychedelic arrangements swimming within an intimate bedroom ambience
- a seamless welding of electronic and acoustic worlds. The experiment
that is Mt. Wilson Repeater sits comfortably in the backyard along
with tradition, sharing drinks until tradition passes out, allowing
him to sneak back into the studio.

Asobi
PS, AUSTRALIA From an observer's perspective, 'Asobi' is a brilliantly
succinct album that appears inspired by sounds made and/or manipulated
by a laptop computer in the tradition of Christian Fennesz, Oval's
'Diskont94', Jan Jelinek, and even My Bloody Valentine's seething
'Loveless'. 'Asobi' (which is a Japanese word meaning 'play') is reminiscent
of the warm digital clicks'n'cuts of the mid-to-late 'Nineties when
the only brazenness left in contemporary music was coming out of Austria
and Germany in the form of Mouse On Mars, Oval, Pita, Fennesz, and
later Jan Jelinek and Radian.

member Art DiFuria, Philly's Photon Band renders heavy '60s psychedelia
as tasteful light entertainment. After cutting the last two Photon
albums solo, he works with eight other musicians here, yet still sounds
like a homebound loner. Awash in echo, DiFuria's woozy voice suggests
the effects of a mind-numbing substance, while his nimble guitar riffs
recall the soulful inclinations of later Hendrix."

School, The
All I Wanna Do
PS, SPAIN Limited edition - Pink colour vinyl. It may be possible
that you may have never heard of them, but this is totally understandable-
they have only played four different concerts since signing to Elefant
at the beginning of the summer of 2007. Since then, their live shows
have increased in number and the group toured throughout the United
Kingdom in October and November with THE LOVES. Skipping about on
stages throughout Great Britain, from Scotland to the south of England
and of course, London, this group has played on numerous occasions
to their fans who come out in the plenty. Before the extensive tour,
in September, they entered the studios with producer Ian Catt (SAINT
ETIENNE, TREMBLING BLUE STARS, SHAMPOO, THE BOO RADLEYS, Kahimi Karie,
THE FIELD MICE) to record two songs which will be a part of their
debut single, "All I Wanna Do," among other songs. This
special edition pink vinyl single will be the waiting room for the
second single and their posterior LP debut, which will be out at the
end of 2008. The fact is that this group of seven, led by the peppy
Liz offers a well-rounded presentation (Amen to the delicious "Kiss
You in the Snow" which came out on our holiday single!), where
their handwriting marks are above and beyond excellent. More importantly,
the pop tunes are filled with emotion. "All I Wanna Do"
reminds us of CAMERA OBSCURA and embraces passion with the legacy
of Phil Spector, with a chorus filled with moving romanticism and
a song that grows with the intensity as each compass is played, embellishing
the melancholy until it stops and it leaves you shivering. "Valentine"
has something else in store for the listener, as it is on the other
side of the single, with a tight chorus (a must to dance to!), an
agile rhythm and Diana Ross thinking that THE SUPREMES never ended.
An amazing B side! Pitchfork, Plan B and Under the Radar have all
spoken highly of them, comparing them to classic bands such as THE
BEATLES, ELO and THE BEACH BOYS and more modern groups like SATURDAY
LOOKS GOOD TO ME, BELLE & SEBASTIAN and LUCKY SOUL, among others.

Way Better Now
PS, SPAIN Limited edition - white colour vinyl. SPEEDMARKET AVENUE,
a Swedish group with a refined atmosphere, will prove to be, without
a doubt, one of the most talked about musical references in 2008 for
all POP lovers in capital letters. In "Way Better Now" they
leave a good mark of their roots, as an advance to their second album,
titled "Way Better Now" as well. On one hand, the title
song is electric and fast-paced, finished off with a glorious chorus,
in a more distorted THE ESSEX GREEN kind of sound, while "The
New Idea" emanates a certain air of the songs that Nancy Sinatra
and Lee Hazlewood played, offering a more innocent facet of the group,
yet elegant at the same time. Two songs produced by Jari Haapalainen
(producer of ED HARCOURT, INTERNATIONAL NOISE CONSPIRACY, THE CONCRETES
and CAMERA OBSCURA, among others) which gives us one of the best virtues
of the group; their all-terrain inspiration covers multiple styles
and sounds, but has always embraced the pop and melody flag. Groups
such as THE AISLERS SET, THE LUCKSMITHS, LADYBUG TRANSISTOR guide
us to their sound but SLOWDIVE, THE CURE and TREMBLING BLUE STARS

Oh! It's A Lovely War Volume 4
PS, UK CD41 is pleased to announce the fourth volume of Oh! It's A
Lovely War, the popular series devoted to archive recordings of songs,
marches and descriptive records from the First World War. Almost all
of the 50 tracks included on this beautifully packaged double CD set
were recorded between 1914 and 1918, and have been carefully digitally
restored and remastered from original 78 rpm sources. Volume 4 comprises
two full length CDs, featuring 150 minutes of popular songs (There's
A Tramp Tramp Tramp, A Perfect Day, K-K-K-Katy), patriotic appeals
(The Bulldog's Bark, For Empire & For England, Save Your Kisses
'Till the Boys Come Home), comedy numbers (The Corporal's Ditty, I
Want To Be a Hero Too, We Shall All Do the Goose Step) and military
marches. Among the rarest recordings are Ten Little Zeppelins by Harry
Bluff, Wait 'Til You Get 'Em Up in the Air Boys by Harry Fay, and
No More Bully Beef & Biscuits and Plum & Apple, both bemoaning
the monotony of rations at the Front. Spoken word selections include
the somewhat brutal descriptive sketch Capture of a German Spy, and
a rare 1917 recording of a British prisoner of war singing Tipperary,
recorded in Germany. An appeal made by the Prince of Wales on behalf
the British Legion in 1930 closes the album Oh! It's A Lovely War
Vol 4 is a must-have collection for anyone with an interest in the
Great War, as well as military and social historians, and vintage

Juegos Olimpicos
PS, SPAIN The fifth volume in the "Teoría y Práctica
Melódica" series. A slightly delayed release, as the series
was conceived as an annual release, but one which has allowed us to
relate it to one of the most relevant 2008 events: ladies and gentlemen,
the Jabalina Olympic Games are officially open! And we're doing it
just some months before the media inundate us with stories about the
Beijing Olympics. Which, of course, have little to do with our own,
more down-to-earth Games - they started as a project with an eclectic
spirit, and the results speak for themselves. Maybe that's why "Juegos
Olímpicos" has actually broken some records: number of
contestants and total length. 23 olympic artists are featured on the
record, some from our roster and some special guests, some Spanish
and some foreign (Pinkie -UK-, heirs to the best British pop of the
90s and the sound of Sarah Records and Soulavki -Chile- one of the
greatest exponents of Andean indietronica, with a touch of 60s flavour).
Together, they've taken this collection to the limit duration for
a CD (79:03 minutes), which makes for one of the best sports-inspired
indie pop compilation ever. The artists in the Jabalina team include
Souvenir, J'aime, Montevideo, Polar, Nadadora, Uke, AMA and Apenino,
and the team of guests features artists such as Francisco Nixon, Flow,
La Costa Brava, La Estrella de David, Pumuky, Travolta or Prin Lal_.
The junior team is full of promising athletes like the alluring Olivia
de Happyland, one of the most promising acts of the new Spanish folk
scene, Nebulosa (which might be the ultimate alias of Charlie Mysterio),
who again oozes the best essence of the 80s songwriters, Llum (the
solo project of Jesús Sáez, from Polar), slowly reaching
maturity and the appreciation he deserves, eclectic DJ Aldo Linares,
who croons his way to become the 'Elvis of Arequipa', Colorado (the
solo project of Modesto, from Zipi Zape) or Linda Guilala, heirs to
the energy pop of Juniper Moon. All in all, a 5th Volume to be proud
of, and which establishes the series as the most prestigious of the
Spanish indie scene. The power of the olympic spirit works miracles,
so something special must have happened to make these twenty-three
independent artists find an unexpected connection between their art
and the heat of the olympic flame. It proves that you need not be
an elite athlete, or even a sporty person, to feel the call of the
olympic flame and reinterpret it musically in your own spirit. Let's
not forget that the universal multi-sport competition from which this
compilation takes its name was originally conceived as an amateur
event, and not for professional sportspeople, a fact that really relates
to the indie spirit of this series and the artists taking part in
it. This is the strongest link there is between the actual definition
of Olympic Games, and the reason that has moved our own celebration
of the amateur spirit that this worldwide event should have. What
we intend to show with this collection is that by applying the olympic
postulates to the independent music, a discipline which is anything
but orthodox, the results featured here, no matter how surrealistic
they might seem, are as legitimate as what the official image of the
Olympic Games might be. As they say, it is the taking part that matters,
and for us it is. But not just that - entertaining and showing a different
take on such an emblematic event was our aim too. But let's get back
to the facts. These are the most relevant figures of "Juegos
Olímpicos": the majority of the songs (16 of a total of
23) are unreleased tracks, and they make up a CD chock full of killer
tunes and eclectic fun which will fascinate the listener. For the
most valuable aspect of this collection is probably the unorthodox
range of interpretations of the same event. Some of the artists focus
on specific Olympic sports, like Nebulosa and his song dedicated to
badminton ("Ba-ba-badminton"), Souvlaki and swimming ("Nadadora"),
Aldo Linares and boxing ("Soy el mejor") and Uke and table
tennis ("Tenis de mesa"). Others champion a sport to become
olympic (Souvenir and "Les surfeurs"). Then there are other
artists who adopt a social point of view (Montevideo and "Olimpiadas
sin medallas") and build a metaphor around the 'other' Olympics
we fight for every day, or a more critical one, like La Estrella de
David's "El parking más grande de Europa", their
ironic take on the Barcelona 92 Olympics, or Pinkie and their bucolic
"Dirty old town". Other songs are dedicated to the personal
sacrifice of athletes (Olivia de Happyland's "Si existe cielo"
or Pumuky and "Lobo estepario contra caballos desbocados en JJ.OO.",
complete with a reference to the work of Herman Hesse). You will also
find songs about sports celebrities (Polar's "Requiem for B.
Johnson", Nadadora's "Evelyn Ashford", and two songs
dedicated to the same athlete - Francisco Nixon's "Nadia"
and Linda Guilala's "La fuga de Nadia Comaneci"). There
are even some artists who have written about personal experiences
from a sports point of view, like Colorado and "El último
partido", La Costa Brava ("Olímpicos"), Travolta
("El día que más corrí de mi vida")
and AMA ("Hasta el ultimo instante"). Last but not least,
the eclectic bunch: Suze's remix of a Flow song ("Se va el avión
a Pekín"), or the lyrical "Naves que dan vueltas
a un balón" by Prin' Lalá. There's room for instrumental
tracks too: "After the game", J'aime (Jaime Cristóbal)'s
cover version of a Brian Wilson's obscure bside from a 1964 single
by The Survivors (a Brian Wilson fake band which only released that
record, with the song "Pamela Ann" on the a-side) and "Ceremonia
de clausura" ("Closing Ceremony") which appropriately
closes the collection. We cannot finish these notes about the 5th
Volume in our "Teoría y Práctica Melódica"
series without mentioning one of its defining features: the artwork.
The series maintains the template that Javier Aramburu designed for
it, and features the work of Nacho Olivares, who has created the beautiful
cover illustration that accompanies this digipack CD. TRACKS: 1. Olivia
de Happyland "Si existe cielo" 2. Nebulosa "Ba-ba-badminton"
3. Souvenir "Les surfeurs" 4. Llum "No more races"

gathered together cover versions of movie music by various Crepuscule
artists and associates, including Paul Haig (The Persuaders), Antena,
Blaine L. Reininger (Le Mepris), Virna Lindt (The Thomas Crown Affair),
Wim Mertens, Steven Brown (Chinatown), Quando Quango, Virginia Astley
and The Pale Fountains (a Bond theme). The overall project was produced
by Tuxedomoon mainstay Blaine L. Reininger. Some interpretations are
faithful, others not! The project was eventually released in 1991,
by which time tracks by Alan Rankine, Peter Hook, La Muerte (Experiment
in Terror) and others had been added. Curiosities include Seabirds,
a charming but obscure Pink Floyd song from the 1969 movie More, and
a splendidly offbeat Godfather cover from Tuxedomoon. Other artists
added to this new CD edition include Thick Pigeon, Tot Taylor and
a former Resident, the late Philip Lithman (aka Snakefinger), with
an amazing interpretation of Fellini's 8 1/2. This new CD edition
has been digitally remastered from the original master tapes, and
features 75 minutes of material. Many of the tracks featured here
remain unavailable elsewhere. The artwork features an original image
by Crepuscule founder Michel Duval, in homage to an Ennio Morricone
album cover from 1964.

Someone's Got to Pay
PS, US The band's all-new release, Someone's Got to Pay, is an Americana
album progressing around a real life murder trial (or as the lyrics
say, "An old murder ballad come to life") and fleshed out
with more original recordings conjuring up small town crazies and
wrecked lives. But don't let the dark subject matter fool you. The
Wilders just got wilder and the music is more engaging then ever.

Yellow6
When The Leaves Fall Like Snow
PS, UK "When The Leaves Fall Like Snow" is the latest release
by the remarkably talented Leicestershire guitarist Jon Attwood (aka
Yellow6), following ten years of extraordinary creativity, both in
terms of quality and productivity (over 30 hours of music on labels
such as Resonant, Ochre, Darla, and many more). This double album,
bearing the unmistakable and highly personal Yellow6 melodic sound,
was conceived and crafted in Stockholm in the autumn and winter of
2007. Reflecting its place of origin, it showcases Yellow6 at its
most minimal, each of the two CDs providing the listener with a different
way of experiencing the grey and white landscapes of Scandinavia.
The first CD takes you on a sweeping journey through tranquil yet
incredibly deep soundscapes created by Jon Attwood's effortlessly
complex layering of sounds. Nocturnal incursions into the cold and
dark realms of Swedish winter... With the sense of isolation and nostalgia
one experiences when immersed in a vast alien environment. Jon Attwood's
drifting and looping guitars so sonorous and versatile that it feels
at times that you're listening to a full orchestra. The second CD,
with shorter tracks and a less ambient feel, bears the same beautiful
and melancholy qualities in a more intimate way. Imagine the same
landscapes but with a fragile light glimmering in the distance or
with the warmth of sunlight shimmering on the snow. You feel gently
yet irresistibly drawn into the quiet intensity of Yellow6's sonic
world, and Jon Attwood's sound invests silence so totally that it
is difficult to listen to anything else after this album has finished
playing. With "When The Leaves Fall Like Snow", Yellow6
takes you on a wondrous musical voyage without any pre-defined destination.
Just press "play" and let yourself be taken over by the
enchantment of the journey. (V. Martin).

Introducing the Yolks
PS, US This nifty Chicago three-piece actually live up to some of
their own hyperbole. The opener on this, "I Do What I Do",
is one of the most deceptively catchy tunes around right now. Just
an amazingly simple jewel of understated no-frills garage rock w/
a pop hook & nonchalant vocals that ends up being more memorable
than dozens of KBD-destructos & weird punquers we've heard lately.

22 Pistepirkko
(Well You Know) Stuff Is Like We Yeah! [regular version] (ON SALE
/ PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 22ND)
PS, FINLAND New 2008 album from Finnish psych-pop phenoms! The fab
three, back with guitar-based spaced-out bohemian blues-rock and proto-garage-psychedelia,
produced by Kramer (Galaxie 500, Daniel Johnston, Ween, Bongwater).
Recorded in just 10 days at the band's own Altai studios 22-Pistepirkko
step forward with their idea of impressive simplicity, lively trio-playing
and good melodies. After periods of heavy experiments in electronic
production work, their current concept of keeping things simple was
already their approach for the Drops+Kicks (2005) album sessions.
Now, with the new album one can hear it in full bloom. P-K Keränen's
vocals and guitar playing have gathered depth that one doesn't hear
too often. Additionally, drummer Espe Haverinen simplified his playing
to a great effect and sings more touching songs then on any other
album. Asko Keränen's sonic bass, weird organs and effects add
a room with a view, so specific 22pp and just right for producer Kramer
to play with those bits and pieces in a most gentle and subtle way.
Chris Bailey of The Saints heard it and wrote: "From the first
bars of the opening track you know you are in for a treat, this record
is MAGIC. Each song has its own personality and reference point which
should defy inclusion on the same album yet all combine to create
an astonishing journey through all that is glorious about pop music.
...a stupendous piece of work!"

Arc Lab
The Goodbye Radio (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 22ND)
PS, US Medard Fischer returns with his rather cryptically-titled third
album, "The Goodbye Radio". Representing a large step forward
for Fischer's Arc Lab project, the album is structured as a musical
reinterpretation of the sonnet form in which field recordings, organic
instrumentation, radio noise, candid male vocals and snippets of old
public domain recordings meet with the FM synthesis, female vocals
and signature beatwork that made previous Arc Lab efforts so special.
Thematic reference points include the Russian space program, relativity,
female serial killers, and being separated from a soulmate. This diverse
collection of influences gives the album a more personal feel than
previous efforts as there are now human stories attached to Fischer's
Arc Lab scheme. Genre specific sign-posts or "this-meets-that"
descriptors are really of little use in describing "The Goodbye
Radio" as Fischer has now taken Arc Lab to places where the synthetic
only aid him in the preservation of great music and ideas. But, as
the title may allude to, this may be Fischer's final offering. Let's
hope not. An artist capable of such alchemy would be a significant
loss for all of us. Let's hope the Arc Lab radio stays on and at its
full volume.

On Ne Distinguait Plus Les Tetes (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 29TH)
PS, FRANCE Arca is a French project initiated by Joan Cambon and Sylvain
Chauveau at the beginning of the year 2000. Arca is inspired by music,
cinema, literature, photographs, every day life sounds. Arca uses
"warm" electronic sounds, mixed with organic instruments,
rainy guitars and Sylvain's voice (since the third album) to draw
melancholic landscapes not so far from David Sylvian masterpieces.
Most of the songs are recorded and mixed at home by Joan Cambon. Sylvain
Chauveau made five solo albums: instrumental music based on sweet
harmonies of piano and strings. The latest one is "Down to the
bone", a record of Depeche Mode covers. He was also part of the
former projects Micro:mega and Watermelon Club.

darkest droners. With tidal rhythms and rasping epics, "Directions

interesting and indefinable sounds of the late 80s / early 90s indie
scene. Fusing a catchy pop sensibility with danceable grooves and
intelligent and often humorous lyrics, they soon became firm independent
favorites and began releasing records on Leeds based Reception Records
in 1987, very quickly catching the ear of John Peel and becoming a
regular fixture of his broadcasts. Three quality singles into their
career, the band secured a deal with Imaginary Records, where they
continued a fine run of singles and eventually released their debut
album. Cap
