Parasol New Arrivals • January 15, 2008

Hey all,

OK friends, are you sitting down? Today we actually received our shipment of Radiohead “In Rainbow” LPs! Better late than never. So rest assured your pre-orders are on the way to your hungry mailboxes.

In other news, despite the frigid temperatures here in Urbana, the sun is shining and so are the new releases. Trust us, we know that sounds corny but you seriously need to check out the new offering from our pal, Darren Cooper and his Three Hour Tour as well as Little Wings, White Town, Magnetic Fields and Yellow Swans, to name but a few.

It’s not that my obsession with The Band has faded, I mean, come on. I named my new cat Virgil Cane, after all. However, The new obsession has to do with a great band that fell under my radar called Further. Now, some members of Further went to form Beachwood Sparks, another band that has been in heavy rotation around these parts lately. It’s too bad that both of these bands life spans were so short. But regardless, if you haven’t already picked up “Make The Cowboy Robots Cry” do yourself a favor and do so immediately. That’s an order mister! Unfortunately all of the Further titles have fallen out of print but hopefully we’ll see a repress before too much longer.

All right, then. Enough chit-chat. Peruse the list below at you leisure and we’re here for you if you need anything.

Sing your thoughts,

Roy & Paul

Jaqee "Nouvelle D'Amour" CD $14.00
Recently nominated for a Swedish Grammy this ambitious new album from our favorite Swedish/Ugandan soul siren finds Jaqee (Jaqueline Nakiri) partnered with Swedish rock icon Mattias Hellberg (Hederos & Hellberg, Nymphet Noodlers, esteemed solo-singer-songwriter) who voodoos up some killer songs and crafty arrangements for his songbird as well as some truly rambunctious and rootsy psych-country-dub-ragga-folk-blues grooves, in a soulful sub-Saharan stylee. Massive Attack-esque dubby pop-hypnotica meets the proto-folk of genre-dabbling Devendra's Smoky Mountain? Or something like that… Thrilling in any size dose, check out sound samples on our front page.

Alcest
Souvenirs D'un Autre Monde
PS, US Epic, elemental post-metal shoegaze guitar rock from one-man-band and a female vocalist, a hurricane of pink noise likened to Jesu, M83, My Bloody Valentine and Sigur Ros. Highly recommended!

ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "The relationship between heavy metal and the so-called "shoegazer" movement of the early '90s might not be apparent in writing, but with Justin Broaderick's amazing transmutation of his grinding industrial metal in Napalm Death and Godflesh into the dark, sonic bliss of his current incarnation as Jesu, it doesn't seem so far-fetched anymore. Immediately upon first listen the connection between one-man band Neige's French "black metal" roots and his current neo-psychedelic explorations under the Alcest moniker doesn't seem so far-fetched, natural even. Playing all the instruments on Alcest's debut full-length Souvenirs d'Un Autre Monde ("Memories of a Future World") Neige builds layers upon layers of ecstatically distorted guitars that evoke obvious comparisons to My Bloody Valentine's sonic extravaganzas and less obvious nods to the brooding minor-key post-metal of Jesu, only perhaps a bit sunnier. There are only six songs on Souvenirs, and the formula deviates only slightly, but the mission statement is evident from the opening crunch of the first track "Printemps Emeraude," as the foundation of majestic guitar swells and stately minimalist drums is laid and the journey begins, and the listener is seemingly transported over great distances and through lifetimes via hypnotic repetition and a series of dynamic shifts which are probably more important than the actual songs themselves. The feelings elicited are those of yearning, nostalgia, triumph and blissful peace, all without a single lyric in (discernible) English. And really, the best factor arising from the meeting of metal and shoegaze is that this is a guitar album -- a monstrous, churning, epic guitar album -- without a single guitar solo!" (Brian Way)

Aloof Proof
Piano Text [re-issue]
PS, US Re-issue of an mid-90s ambient classic. "There is no ambient record greater than Aloof Proof's Piano Text. It is the kind of album that becomes essential after just the first listen. Since it was quietly released in 1994 -- a time, remember, dominated by the ambient techno boom of such artists as the Orb and Future Sound of London -- it has achieved a kind of cult status among fans of the genre. This is largely due to the edited versions of the album's two tracks that appeared on Asphodel's sprawling drone compilations, opening the world of Aloof Proof to thousands of eager listeners in the mid-'90s... This is an album that must be listened to -- no words can adequately describe how spellbinding the music is, how staggeringly elegant it is."

American Mars
Western Sides
PS, US Hailing from Detroit, yet having not a trace of the Motor City rock element, their ethereal sound is an impassioned & moody brand of indie-Americana. Under the direction of the band's pedal steel player & producer DAVID FEENY (Blanche, Loretta Lynn, The White Stripes), the band's ranging impulses are brought together to create something more than the sum of its songs.

Battle of Land and Sea
S-T
PS, US To describe the sound of The Battle of Land & Sea, one might call up images of abandoned sea-worn ships floating through a thick coastal fog. And upon first listen you might call to mind Cat Power, or the soft glow of Songs of Green Pheasant. But eventually, you start to hear what makes the music of Portland based Sarah O'Shura so special. You get a glimpse of a world through the eyes of a someone on a musical pilgrimage, whether the tales are laden with sorrow or joy, they are enchanting & hopeful. Spooky & beautiful...calling out all the old ghosts from past recordings on beautifully warbled vinyl, they recreate an old jazz club atmosphere but with a little sawdust on the floor.

Bethell, Craig
A Day Full of You, A Night Tired of Me
PS, UK Debut album by ex-Locust vocalist Craig Bethell. The album displays a plaintive songwriting style that unashamedly croons its way through a set of eleven varied songs influenced as much by avant-pop baritones Scott Walker and David Sylvian as it is by a troubled and melancholic Chet Baker. Mark Van Hoen (Locust, Mojave 3, Sing Sing) lends production duties and evokes an atmosphere of Low-era Bowie, employs a careful use of Rhodes piano & subtle strings), as well as vintage synthesizer, distant harp motifs and brushed drums.

Brannon, Norman
The Anti-Matter Anthology: A 1990s Post-Punk & Hardcore Reader
PS, US While much ink has been spilled over 1980s punk and hardcore mythology, very little has been done to document the era that followed. Indeed, it's a glaring omission. In the 1990s, punk rock entered its adolescent stage and began reevaluating its own music, politics, and traditions. And before long, the result of this collective soul-searching became clear: If hardcore wanted to remain relevant in the new decade, it was going to have to rebel against itself. "The Anti-Matter Anthology" is perhaps the first published book dedicated to this transition.

Currie, Jason
What Is Love For
PS, US Solo album of plush ballads from Del Amitri frontman. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "A sumptuous set of lovely, meticulously arranged songs, sung with earnest emotion and empathy. Comparisons to much of McCartney's love tunes are in order. Imagine an album filled with variations on "My Love" and you're close to what Currie creates here. The melodies are simple yet elegant, the production clean and crisp with few signs of the sappy gunk this could easily have turned into. The singer's vocals are instantly recognizable, but in this format of music from the heart they seem even more impressive, as he's obviously connected to the material and not aiming for chart success. When he reaches into the higher end of his register on "Where Did I Go?" accompanied by strings and a somewhat surprising strangulated guitar solo, the drama is riveting. It will take a few spins for this to kick in, but when it does, small variations on the piano based format such as the gritty guitar that jumps out of "Out of My Control" and the squawking, David Bowie-styled sax in "Something in That Mess" become gripping interludes in the introspective mood. Clearly this material wouldn't have cut it on a Del Amitri album, at least all of it together, but the consistent tone works to this disc's advantage. It's a perfect soundtrack for rainy days and Sundays, or as accompaniment to anyone who has ever lost a love and needed to hear those sentiments expressed with honesty, sympathy and warmth."

PS, GERMANY Matt John is back with a new stunning piece of minimal techno. Stretching over more than eleven minutes, 'Olga Dancekowski' is another psychedelic journey through the hypnotic sounds of Mr. John, where little bleepy sequences accumulate a twisted impact for the eager souls on the floor. Featuring guitarist Mike Davis who had previously played in The MC5, Ron Asheton - bass player from The Stooges and drummer Rob King, the band were completed by vocalist and ex-model Niagara. Devine & Griffiths
Wheels To Get To Heaven
PS, UK Ian Devine is guitarist with Manchester post-punk band Ludus and one half of the duo Devine & Statton. This is the new album recorded with Amanda Griffiths on vocals. To narrow the field, this is a record that sits in the same emotional and musical league as the third release from The Velvet Underground, the first album by The Smiths, Neil Young's 'Harvest Moon', Nico's 'The Chelsea Girls', Carole King's 'Tapestry' or Joni Mitchell's 'Court and Spark'. And how to justify such a grand claim? It all comes back to the music, and the world opened up by the music. 'Wheels To Get To Heaven' is a near perfect conflation of darkness and light: that such enchanting, mesmeric songs make eloquent not simply such sadness, but such heartfelt vulnerability to the curves and ragged edges of seemingly commonplace days.

Dolenz, Jones, Boyce & Hart
Same
PS, UK Almost immediately after the demise of The Monkees in 1970, there was industry clamour for a reunion and publisher Christian Dewalden came forward with an offer to finance the project. Micky Dolenz and Davy Jones were enthusiastic but as Mike Nesmith wasn't interested and Peter Tork couldn't be found a kind of pseudo-Monkees was created enlisting the services of gifted songwriting team of Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, who had written The Monkees first number one 'Last Train To Clarksville', 'The Monkees Theme (Hey, Hey We're The Monkees)' and '(I'm Not Your) Stepping Stone'. So Dolenz, Jones, Boyce & Hart was born. With the Monkees logo under copyright and not available for their use, the foursome set off on tour as 'the great golden hits of the Monkees - the guys who wrote 'em and the guys who sang 'em.' DJBH made its first public appearance on July 4, 1975 at six flags over mid-America in St. Louis, Missouri, where they were met by 12,500 of the same screaming fans who had followed the Monkees 10 years previously. Performing a raft of Monkee hits (Peter Tork had joined DJBH onstage at Disneyland) the band appeared on 'American Bandstand' and 'Don Kirshner's rock concert' and toured the States for a year before heading to the far east. They have the distinction of being the first American band to play in Thailand (they had to cut their hair to be allowed into the country!). The success of the American tour secured a contract with capitol records. The subsequent 'Dolenz Jones Boyce & Hart' was produced by Boyce & Hart and though light and very pop, is regarded as the most coherent Monkeerelated
release since 1967¹s 'Pisces Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones'.

Donna Summer (aka Jason Forrest)
Panther Tracks v. 1
PS, UK File under: electronic, break core, hardcore. He's back! It's been 2 years since Jason Forrest released his last full-length album, and 5 years since he's released as Donna Summer. So now he's back, this time with the slightly different moniker (DJ Donna Summer) and his first release for his own Cock Rock Disco label. Just as "Shamelessly Exciting" was a record that mixed different genres into a new mash of sampled sounds, "Panther Tracks" is a record comprised of different styles of dance music made solely with the intention to get people moving! From Booty to Break core, Happy Hardcore to Hardstyle, Techno to B'more Club Music, Forrest has it in there! Initially begun as a sort of remix record, "Panther Tracks" builds heavily on a variety of sampled heroes. One can hear Dj Chip and Dj Technics form the skeleton of more booty oriented tracks like "Peepers" and "Boomshakalaka". While some live recordings (on cassette) of old-school Uk Break beat Rave festivals by DJ Slipmat, Ratpack, and Ellis D are reconstructed to make new Breakcore styled dance tracks. Traces of Hardstyle, Techno and a whole lot of Breakcore yield such gems as "Party People", "Get Down" and "Rock Rock Rock". No style too hard or too cheesy to learn from, "Panther Tracks" is like the ultimate Rave; it's fun, slightly crazy, and will keep you dancing all night long.

Eels, The
Meet the Eels: Essential Eels 1996-2006, Vol. 1
PS, US PREFIX MAG: "Throughout the myriad problems that have informed his music, Mark Oliver Everett has continued to churn out plenty of product with his main musical project, Eels. To celebrate the group's longevity, Everett (or just simply "E," as you may know him better) is emptying his vaults with this massive release. Meet the Eels features some favorites like "Novocain for the Soul" as well as a remix of "Climbing to the Moon" by Jon Brion and a cover of Missy Elliott's "Get Ur Freak On." Fine Arts Showcase, The
Sings Rough Bunnies
PS, SWEDEN Third album from Gustaf Kjellvander's Fine Arts Showcase, and the follow-up to his 110% brilliant. The short version: TFAS covers 11 song by Swedish cult-twee-punk-lofi duo The Rough Bunnies. The bonus, on top of it all, twist to the album is that it is mastered by the legendary Mr Norman Blake of Teenage Fanclub!

The long version: This is an album of many stories. Gustaf Kjellvander and his friends in The Fine Arts Showcase have made a covers album, entirely based on songs from the Swedish, rather unknown, jangly, lo-fi band Rough Bunnies. Why is that? Let's make Gustaf himself explain: "I was first introduced to Anna Vermina and her cousin Frida, the founding members of Rough Bunnies and Inside Riot, through mutual friends. Frida gave me a CD-R just days before they were about to move to Berlin. About six months later I was looking for someone to rent my spare room. I bumped into Frida by chance, who told me she had moved back from Berlin to Malmö and needed a place to stay - so she moved in. I was already smitten by Inside Riot at this time, and when Frida played me the songs they had recorded in Berlin, along with the Rough Bunnies record C-sides, it blew me away. I played it to everyone who came over to my house. They became an obsession that carries on to this day. I knew I wanted the Fine Arts Showcase to cover their songs. The problem was that with a catalogue of songs as amazing as theirs it was hard to pick just one, so I came up with the idea that we should do an entire record instead (in the Merle Haggard sings Jimmy Rodgers tradition). And here it is: a musical love letter to two of my favorite songwriters, a celebration of the pop geniuses of the Vermina family. Rough Bunnies (and their twin group Inside Riot) have inspired me more than any other band this side of the millennium and this record is my way of thanking them. Rough Bunnies Saved My Life" -Gustaf Kjellvander

WIRELESS BOLLINGER REVIEW: "But the hook that makes this album fun isn't just the fact that most of the tales told in each song are full of girly sweetness. Rather it's the Fine Arts Showcase sound itself - and in particular, Kjellvander's sensationally produced voice, mixing with the aforementioned feminie splendour of Rough Bunnies' original words, that make it work so well. Instead of coming across as simply a cute, slightly cheeky female pop record, what we've got here is an album by a man who's lovingly singing through diary entries, discovering her fascinations, disappointments, sexuality, crushes - the works. This grown male's perspective on adolescent female territory delivers a fresh-sounding positive romanticism to Sings Rough Bunnies; and it's bloody infectious."

Flower Travellin' Band
Satori
PS, UK Previously issued on CD by Phoenix Records (and o/p already), now issued on deluxe LP format as well; 180 gram pressing. Reissue of the second Flower Travellin' Band album, originally issued by Atlantic Records in Japan in 1971. Satori is a conceptual hard rock/psych album driven by Hideki Ishima's furious guitar licks which erupt and explode over the harmonic heart beat of the drums and bass. Yamanaka's banshee-like vocal style turned him into an occidental Iggy Pop or Robert Plant while the band itself was rapidly becoming Japan's answer to Led Zeppelin. Satori is a huge album in every way. From power chords to Eastern-tinged North African six-string freak-outs and crashing tom-toms, the band flexes its collective muscle from start to finish. In short, this is a real rock classic of the type they simply don't make any more.

Formby, Richard
Volume 1
PS, US The first of three CDs to be released on Mind Expansion, Vol 1 features 8 beautifully produced masterpieces of pure sonic bliss. Formby's debut solo album, is very much a sound engineer's album. Seen as something of an Eno for the post-rock generation. Formby builds on warm, looped fragments, cut up drums, guitar chime & organ arrangement, with all the ascending tact of Reich. In his world it's sometime in the 70s', at the height of classical experimentation & kraut motorik. Limited to 1000 copies.

Friska Viljor
Bravo!
PS, SWEDEN Debut album recorded by two drunk, lovelorn Swedish lads. Though sung in English throughout these songs are so very very Swedish. Comparisons include the legendary Bob Hund and their alter ego Bergman Rock, The Libertines and Beruit, and when I say that this could be a collection of unheard Shout Out Louds singles & b-sides I mean that as a very good thing. LONDON TIMES: "Friska Viljor's songs are heart-on-sleeve, declamatory and impossible to dislike. Bravo indeed." CONTACT MUSIC: "There may be only so much heartache that can be mined in any band's lifecycle, but while it's here, it should be welcomed. Bravo is like some Libertines/ Kaiser Chiefs cross, so full is it of anthemic indie pop, like fellow Swedes the Shout Out Louds (or the Danish Figurines). The sound of lost love is written through the songs, but it is not a depressing place to be - the sound of defiance comes through the lyrics, while the music, that throws in ukelele, accordion, trumpet and flugelhorn on top of the guitars and drums, like some rockier Beirut, is energetic and propulsive. Who knows if there could be a second album with the same spit and polish, but who cares? Bravo is a fantastic first album."

PS, US This is free form Applachain abstraction from the folk/minimalist duo of Keith Wood & Brad Rose. Originally released in a CDR edition, this batch finds these autumn alchemists offering seven soul-soothing hymnals to the wind & the trees & the sky & the leaves. Tranced-out falsetto drifts atop supple strumming to create traditional backwoods folk, stressed & compressed by the walls around them, making it softer & airier. Their fractured take on folk is complimented by multi-layered bowed string & harmonium drones.

Illiad, The
A Sad Day On Pluto
PS, GERMANY The Illiad is a young quintet from Ohio. A creatively produced demo put World In Sound's attention to the band leader Kyle Pittman, an introverted and deeply emotional singer and guitarist. A Sad Day On Pluto was recorded in Cleveland, Ohio in 2007 and contains 13 original tunes reflecting a tasty spectrum between early Pink Floyd jamming, '60s garage/flower-power and loner folk style, and features very catchy lyrics combined with interesting 'psychedelicate' melodies. Pittman's music captures a unique style of composing fresh music with the influences of Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd, West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, The Velvet Underground, Marc Bolan and David Bowie. The mixing, mostly done by Pittman himself is truly a 'trip in time' -- a 'stereo-experimental' '60s style like Pink Floyd's Piper at the Gates of Dawn! The song 'Are You A Librarian' can be heard on Trip In Time Vol.2 (Psychedelic Rock Reflections). With expressive vocals, screeching guitar hooks and sunny Farfisa sounds in these electric tunes and classic ballads, The Illiad create the beginning of a fantastic voyage into a concrete vision of dreamy songs.

Little Wings
Magic Wand
PS, GERMANY With "Magic Wand" by Little Wings Ahornfelder widens its genre variance once more to include an album we believe to be so genuinely beautiful that here's the first non instrumental album so far. After Kyle Field, the singer and head behind the changing lineup of Little Wings, released his book of drawings "Put It In A Nutshell" on Ahornfelder early 2007 it's wonderful to release his music now too. Little Wings sound is characterized the most by Kyle Field's notable voice. With a very unique sound he creates lush folky guitar-based tunes revolving around situations he may have experienced. But it's the poetic, stream of conscious way these images are described that establishes the special atmosphere of Kyle's lyrics. Sometimes they're reminding of the Beach Boys, sometimes more like contemporary American lo-fi-folk. In any way, you here a nature- and sea-loving man expressing his way of living and seeing his surrounding. And with the words and imagery he chooses his songs each establishes associations and feelings beyond simple tunes. With his always changing band recorded an album that may well be the one sounding more like a studio-recording than the albums before. The way perfect pop tunes and more expressive passages are alternating makes this work so special and abiding.

Magik Markers
Boss
PS, US Limited vinyl version of the most Magik Markers album (CD is on Ecstatic Peace), on their very own label Arbitrary Signs. "Recorded in the cavernous dark of Echo Canyon West with producer Lee Ranaldo working the boards like a diviner, BOSS documents the Markers with a previously-unheard fidelity and orchestration. Idiosyncratic song structure and melodies interspersed with a destructive drum stomp are reminiscent of the early electrified blues of Junior Kimbrough, or the black hole rhythms of Kousokuya. In a 2005 interview in The Wire, Elisa Ambrogio said, 'I want [The Magik Markers] to concentrate on music and focus inward, to concentrate on our own language of sound.' BOSS stands as the Markers' first stab at getting to the meat of this ambition. With a mix of blues simplicity, an almost Sonny Sharrock wailing and a janky Americana punk reminiscent of Pat Place and Roky Erickson, Ambrogio avoids preciousness like a rash. On BOSS, a tent rises right out of the empty plain and we are thrust into a full-blown revival show with no audience and no lights; it is just Elisa preaching, Pete blowing Gabriel's horn, and the mad wind of the prairie blowing all around. They are each hand-screened individual works of art & very very limited."

Magnetic Fields, The
Distortion (ON SALE)
PS, US New album! STEREOGUM: "The Magnetic Fields can't be accused of false advertising in titling studio album eight Distortion: Each tune's wrapped in a fuzzy, clamoring shell, even when the feedbacking acoustic piano and guitar hum's relegated to deep in the background. Distortion's consistent textural palette's reminiscent of Holiday's "Desert Island," but this is all about icy New York City, or some other place where it snows. Besides distortion, the songs are coated in the lonesome darkness of The Charm Of The Highway Strip. Sigh. On the whole, it sports more sonic depth than 2004's sorta minor, stringier i. Let's consider it a baker's dozen of sad-and-out-of-love songs... Let's also consider it incredibly beautiful."

Picabia, Francis
La Nourrice Américaine (The American Nurse)
PS, UK A unique CD by influential avant-garde artist Francis Picabia, featuring two interpretations of his provocative 1920 Dadaist piece for piano, together a spoken word extract from 1945. Written in 1920, La Nourrice Américaine (The American Nurse) consists of "three notes repeated to infinity" and was performed for the first - and last - time at the Festival Dada, staged at the Salle Gaveau in Paris on 26 May 1920. A landmark event, the Festival Dada included contributions from Tristan Tzara, Andre Breton, Paul Eluard, Louis Aragon, Philippe Soupault and Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes, and launched the Dada phenomenon in Paris. La Nourrice Américaine was performed on the day by Marguerite Buffet, duration unknown. It seems likely that Picabia's only venture into musical composition was inspired by talks with his friends Erik Satie, Marcel Duchamp and Edgard Varese. On this CD fast and slow interpretations are included, both performed by pianist Tom Feldschuh and each lasting for 20 minutes. The CD also includes a rare spoken word piece by Picabia (in the French language), recording a visit to the artist's Paris atelier in July 1945. Artist biography: Born in Paris in 1879, artist, poet and theorist Francis Picabia is recognized as a key figure in the development of abstract art and the avant-garde in the 20th Century. After 1913 he made several visits to New York, where he was active in avant-garde circles and took part in the Armory Show. In 1917 he founded the celebrated periodical 391, and was an active participant in Paris Dada. A friend of composer Erik Satie, the pair collaborated on the ballet Relâche in 1924. Picabia later resumed abstract painting and writing poetry; a lover of fast cars, he is said to have owned 150 different vehicles. Picabia died in 1953.

Rings
Black Habit
PS, US First Nation has become Rings. Rings is the new First Nation. This is their new record. It is called Black Habit. New York's First Nation was Nina Mehta, Kate Rosko, and Melissa Livaudais. Melissa left; Abby Portner (sister of Animal Collective's Dave Portner) joined. The new trio decided to make a clean break and rename the band.
Black Habit delivers in a major way. Rings have clearly developed their own style: a loose tribal pop sound that thrives on vocal harmonies and pulsating drum rhythms. Black Habit's energy is full of beauty, elegance and simplicity. The new name represents the group in many ways: the group's circular compositions, the bonds between them, their decision-making processes, and their feminine beliefs, interlocking, connected, whole, and continuous.

S.T. Mikael
Mind of Fire
PS, SWEDEN After an 11 year silence, here's a new album by the mysterious and legendary Swedish psychedelic multi-instrumentalist, S.T. Mikael. Mikael spearheaded the DIY psychedelic rock/folk movement of the late 1980s/mid-'90s... Now that he's finally back, here's a chance at last for the world to join his psychedelic world again. The music, stretching out in many different directions, has been done freely and spontaneously in an extremely relaxed and happy environment. He also joins forces with Dungen's Reine Fiske and Fredrik Björling, whose musical expertise now also grace the grooves. These otherworldly acid tripper recordings now exist in the real world and S.T. Mikael proves, once again, to be a gifted songwriter and an unconventional performer with a very personal ear for acoustics and an emotional honesty seldom seen these days. Melodic folk-rock elements flow with waves of heavy fuzz-phase leads; weird, detached, haunted vocals echo over the band and the whole thing seems to teeter on the brink of psychedelic oblivion. This is not psychedelic revival, but the psychedelic NOW. His soaring vocals, surreal lyrics, fragile, folky melodies, heavy fuzz riffs, mind-bending soul funk and penchant for the spiritual and mystical make this a fascinating voyage that is so mind-twisting, soul-swirling, upper psychedelic that your third eye takes you on a joyride through an altered state! This album makes your brain start thinking in those pebble-splash-pond-mind circular expanding waveforms that reveal the password to tomorrow. The CD also contains 9 previously-unreleased vintage recordings and unique spoken introductions by Mikael. Limited edition of 2,000 copies only.

How Does It Feel To Be Loved: The Scenics Play the Velvet Underground
PS, US This quickly immerses the listener into a warm frenzy of fuzzy energy. First formed in '76 by Andy Meyers & Ken Badger, they were one of the most intrepidly inspired bands of the Toronto new wave/punk scene. They now return w/ a full-length

these ten tracks, making this an abrasive wash of harmonious distortion.

Sic Alps
Strawberry Guillotine
PS, US Sic Alps toss out three new tracks for this seven". Title track 'Strawberry Guillotine' takes the listener on a guided tour of an imagined war between the sprawling Golden Gate Park homeless population and the more established model yacht community. Musket blasts sound off as shopping carts laden with gasoline and styrofoam emerge from the silent bushes and charge the blood-dimmed shores of the cement-bottomed Spreckles Lake. Cover art co-opted from '90s L.A. anti-legends Summer Hits, who stole it from the Walker Brothers in the first place. Apparently Rex from Summer Hits is now homeless in London where his long beard is black on one side and fully gray on the other. This record is humbly dedicated to him.

Silver Apples
Contact [re-issue]
PS, US This is a reissue of the second album Contact by '60s electronic legends Silver Apples, originally released by Kapp Records in 1969. This enigmatic duo, armed only with percussion, vocals and an early, specialized synthesizer, is often credited with giving the musical world its first electronic album, as well as having a significant influence on bands which followed in their wake; bands such as Ultravox and Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark. Silver Apples, named after a W.B. Yeats poem, consisted of electronics wiz Simeon Coxe and percussionist Danny Taylor. Simeon built an impressive collection of electronic paraphernalia (dubbed the "Simeon") which ultimately included a dozen oscillators, six of them tuned to bass notes which he played with his feet, an assortment of sound filters, telegraph keys, radio parts, lab gear and a variety of second-hand electronic junk. Contact ushered in the band's recorded popularity and a national tour was quickly organized. Several tracks on Contact feature bass lines provided by Simeon's banjo playing, but it is the clever use of the lead oscillator and new-found intensity of the lyrics that sets Contact apart from its predecessor. Such was the level of Simeon's growing electronic proficiency that the intro to the album's opening track, "You And I" more than successfully recreates the sound of an airplane taking off. Silver Apples all but disappeared from the musical firmament when Kapp folded in 1970, only to re-emerge in January 1997 to perform before a celeb-packed audience at the Knitting Factory. Again, the critics were unanimous. As the MC waxed poetic during an introduction to the Silver Apples concert in San Francisco, 1968: "You are about to have probably the most unusual musical experience of your life. The music will enter areas of your mind never before opened until now. At times it may be hard to understand, but if you let the music penetrate, you'll dig it."

Silver Apples
S-T [re-issue]
PS, US This is a reissue of the self-titled first album by '60s electronic legends Silver Apples, originally released by Kapp Records in 1968. Fresh off their stint as The Overland Stage Electric Band, Simeon and Dan Taylor formed their own extravagant, two-man electronic space-odyssey, Silver Apples, to pretty remarkable critical acclaim. Their debut enjoyed a 10-week stay in Billboard's Top 100 list, and the album's first track, "Oscillations," made the Top 10 list in numerous cities around the U.S. The music critics loved them. "What's so amazing is that they make absolutely mind-shattering music with all this junky equipment" commented one reviewer, quite possibly astounded over the then-mindbending concept of build-it-yourself electronics combined with rock drums. The debut album features lyrics by poet Stanley Warren who met the duo at the Third Annual Avant Garde Arts Festival in 1968, organized by topless cellist Charlotte Moorman. An absolutely essential piece of musical history from electronic/psychedelic/rock music's ground-breaking legends.

Single
Pianístico
PS, SPAIN SINGLE is the personal project of Teresa Iturrioz, bass player and brilliant lyricist in such seminal bands of Spanish independent pop music as AVENTURAS DE KIRLIAN and LE MANS. Now Teresa comes back to the front row with her own project, SINGLE, a new musical adventure of her own. A journalist once said LE MANS suggested "an image of Claudine Longet fronting STEREOLAB". Classicism and a fragile voice, fronting leftfield experimentation and sonic avant-garde: a definition that can perfectly fit the new songs by SINGLE. Teresa works once again with Ibon, who appears here in the roles of composer, producer and musician (as well as providing some of the musicians he usually works with on his own solo records, like Antonio from PARADE or Murky from PATRULLERO MANCUSO and GRIMORIO). There's three excellent tracks on this debut EP by SINGLE, that comes wrapped in a wonderful and beautiful cover artwork by Spanish top designer Javier Aramburu.

Souvenir
Extras 64
PS, SPAIN Souvenir's 'Extras 64' has been conceived as the epilogue to their record '64' (Jabalina Música 2007), which was released at the beginning of this year and critically acclaimed as an inspired change of course in the sound of this heterodox Spanish indie band. Initially intended as a single to feature their song 'Si tu sais pas' -an irresistible techno-pop gem which Souvenir wrote and recorded after the release of '64'- it has eventually become a real treat for fans which includes their cover version of Blondie's 'Hanging on the telephone' (which Souvenir are performing live on their current tour), three remixes of songs from '64', and their amazing first-ever video of the song 'Allô, allô'. So 'Extras 64' features two brand new tracks, a video and three remixes which give songs from '64' an even more dance-oriented dimension. For this task Souvenir have chosen artists on their same wavelength, such as Johan Agebjörn (the Swedish producer and songwriter who's responsible for the success of this year's brilliant debutante Sally Shapiro) who has taken 'Allô, allô' to new dancefloor heights, or Spanish singer Miqui Puig, who has remixed 'Une semaine en ballon'. Also, Souvenir's Jaime Cristóbal has revamped his own 'Accident à Londres'. These new 5 dancefloor fillers are topped by a brilliant video produced and directed by Spanish ace company Producciones Entrelíneas. The video takes the avant-garde aesthetics of '64' further on and the result is a pleasure to the eye, with a special mention to Patricia, whose appearance on the video is especially captivating. Iker Spozio, again, is responsible for the 'Extras 64' artwork, and Arturo Vaquero has been in charge of the mastering.

Taunus
Harriet
PS, GERMANY Taunus was formed by the Berliner steel string guitarists Jan Thoben and Jochen Briesen in early 2001. They were joined by several guests playing percussion, banjo, harmonium and vibraphone at live concerts. Since their first long player Malinche (Schinderwies-Production, 2005) Taunus' lineup keeps changing a bit and is heading towards a more flexible ensemble conception. For the new album Harriet (Ahornfelder, 2007) Derek Shirley, Michael Thieke, Wilm Thoben and F.S. Blumm were invited to play along at the recording sessions. Taunus play acoustic (mostly) instrumental music - you can find elements ranging from folk, finger picked minimal structures to improvised and more open forms in their music. The first record Malinche by Taunus was mostly focused on minimal, interlocking folky guitar patterns. Harriet on the other hand features more contrasting elements: Strictly composed passages, which are rigid and static in character, are combined with free, fluid and improvised parts. Dissonances enter a framework of open tuned folk-harmonics. And on top of the warm and immediate sounds of acoustic instruments an artificial voice generator talks about the inconstancy of concepts and theory. By bridging and sometimes even blurring these contrasts and differences, Taunus expand their way of musical expression. Harriet successfully explores new ways of composing interesting, reflective and charming music based on finger picked guitars. The album is named after Darwin's lady freshwater turtle Harriet, which died in 2006 at the age of 175 years. She was mistakenly thought to be a male exemplar of her species for most of her life.

Vapaa
Hum Hum Hum
PS, FINLAND Vapaa is a loose collective of musicians but this recording represents the basic 'core' group; Joel Kivela, Tiitus Petajaniemi, Keijo Virtanen and Jari-Pekka Koho. We met in Jyvaskyla, Finland in year 2003-2004 and after that we have made many records to different labels and played live shows around Finland and one tour in Europe as Keijo and the Free Players. Organic, drifting psychedelic improv without much in the way of modern equivalents. Easily compared to a few Krautrock favorites (early Amon Duul 2 and a very quiet Ash Ra Tempel) -- but in general a bit more relaxed (perhaps a little International Harvester?) For those well versed in the LVD sound, this is fairly definitive.

Shapes and Sounds Volume Two: Shades of Deepest Purple from the BBC Archives 1967-1971
PS, UK With this second excavation of previously unreleased live BBC session performances spanning the period 1967-1971, Shapes And Sounds becomes a series and Volume Two features a completely different line up of bands from last year's set. Pride of place on this second edition arguably goes to The Gun, with three astonishing performances that were recorded nearly a year before 'Race With The Devil' which illustrate their late '67 menu of mod and psych pop, with cracking versions of Rupert's Peoples 'Hold On,' Paul Simons 'A Most Peculiar Man' and a quite splendid airing of their legendary 'Light On The Wall!' The Casuals surprise with the beat of 'Midnight Confessions' and 'Take Me For A Little While' as well as a fine rendering of 'Jesamine,' while The Mirage perform a live version of their May 1967 single 'The Wedding Of Ramona Blair.' The Alan Bown! play an excellent take of 'Magic Handkerchief' and even more interestingly offer two numbers that never appeared on any Bown release, with the self-penned progressive popper 'Movie Star Baby' and a brilliant interpretation of The Association's 'Pandora's Golden Heebie Jeebies.' Also with three tracks on Shapes And Sounds are Wales' The Bystanders, who turn in a lovely version of 'Royal Blue Summer Sunshine Day' as well as a glorious homage to The Byrds with 'Renaissance Fair.' Even better and long talked about in collectors' circles but never previously released is their absolutely stunning rendition of 'I Am The Walrus,' which Top Sounds are sure will disappoint no one! Sourced from an off-air recording of their only British television appearance on Disco 2, Killing Floor perform 'Milkman' from their Out Of Uranus LP in superb quality (the TV show was wiped decades ago) and of similarly heinous rarity are live tracks from Portrait and Katch 22, who turn in forceful renderings of 'Born To Be Wild' and 'The Price Of Love,' respectively (the latter of which is better than the Status Quo cover!) The sound quality is absolutely superb throughout, with 12 of the 16 tracks sourced from original BBC Transcription records. The other performances have been taken from excellent off-air recordings and similarly shine and though few of the tracks on the collection needed much enhancement at all, all have nevertheless been professionally restored and mastered. The presentation is immaculate and as with the previous Shapes And Sounds release, Artholeghraphics have designed a memorable period flavored package. The LP has a 16 page color booklet based on a vintage Radio Times packed with illustrations, band histories and listings of all their known BBC sessions written and supplied by Nigel Lees, author of much of Record Collector magazine's 'The British Psychedelic Trip' series. Except for the Mirage recording being bootlegged many years ago (in lesser quality!), none of the tracks have ever been commercially available and most have not been heard in public since the '60s. Shapes And Sounds is a legitimate limited edition release, licensed from the BBC with the blessing and co-operation of many band members.

Wayfaring Strangers: Guitar Soli
PS, US Bridging the gap between American primitive pioneers John Fahey, Robbie Basho, and Leo Kottke, and the California modernists William Ackerman, Alex de Grassi, and Michael Hedges, Guitar Soli explores the private side of the solo guitar movement from 1966-1981. While Takoma and Windham Hill were laying the groundwork for the new age marketing juggernaut of the mid '80s, these fourteen loners were picking away in tiny cafes, selling records hand to hand. The single disc set comes housed in a digipack chipboard slipcase with a 40-page booklet and features Ted Lucas, Daniel Hecht, Dan Lambert, Jim Ohlschmidt, Tom Smith, Mark Lang, Richard Crandell, Tree People, William Eaton, George Cromarty, Scott Witte, Brad Chequer, Dwayne Canan, and Dana Westover.

PS, US Available again: An unbelievable collection of dynamic Cambodian music recorded between the 1960s and the 1990s, both in Cambodia and in the United States. A truly Khmer blend of folk and pop stylings -- Cha-Cha Psychedelia, Phase-shifting Rock, sultry circle dance standards, pulsing Cambodian new wave, haunted ballads, musical comedy sketches, Easy-Listening numbers and raw instrumental grooves presented in an eclectic variety of production techniques. Male and female vocalists share the spotlight, embellished by roller rink organ solos, raunchy guitar leads and MIDI defying synthesizers. Culled from over 150 ageing cassettes found at the Asian Branch of the Oakland Public Library in California, these recordings showcase a pre and post holocaust Cambodian musical lineage that can't be ignored.

Happy New Year 2008
PS, SPAIN Limited edition. Featuring THE SCHOOL, HELEN LOVE, CORAZON, MY LITTLE AIRPORT. To celebrate the holidays, we have finally made our long-awaited wish come true by creating a festive holiday CD single to give away to our mates! With this single we would like to give thanks to everyone who has helped us throughout the years, especially fans of the label, without their help none of this would be impossible. A special single with songs that will make us forget all the hard times and help us ring in the New Year with bells and whistles. This single will be freely given to anyone who purchases an Elefant order that exceeds 20 euros. For those of you who would like to have more copies to give as holiday gifts to friends and ring in the New Year, there is also the option to buy it at a reduced price. Four songs from the latest signed Elefant artists. The most recent one, THE SCHOOL, a project of 8 restless musicians from Cardiff which put out their first song precisely on this single. Last September, they packed their bags and moved off to London to record, under the guidance of Ian Catt, seven delicious songs which will be put out in two singles at the beginning of the year, a sweet and exquisite carol with a very 50's holiday pop feel to it. Caitlin and Sauna [they are only 6 years old!], our kids HELEN LOVE show their adoration of Joey Ramone is more alive than ever and continues throughout the generations--they create a snowman out of Joey Ramone and this way, Santa Claus won't have any problems finding them!! Absolutely adorable! CORAZÓN inspires us with their brilliant, sad and melancholic carol highlighted with rural folk strokes, providing an authentic flavor of Christmas. Carlos and Nando are placing the final touches to their new and highly anticipated album, an album that includes the production of Ibon Errazkin, practically guaranteeing a classic spot in the Elefant catalogue. To culminate the single, Nicole and P, our friends from Hong Kong, wanted to celebrate the holidays in a special way; they always mention their friends in their songs, so it is of no surprise that the protagonists are the recently married Por and Machoto the happy Newlyweds!

Arbol
You Traveled My Heart Inside Out (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 22ND)
PS, SPAIN Arbol´s 3rd release "You Travelled my Heart Inside Out" is out now. Miguel Marín, aka Arbol, continues to walk a path that the enigmatic lushness of his previous work cannot erase. Where a clearing in the forest of "Dreams made of paper" (Lejos Discos, 2005) forced us to linger over songs that poured down on us as a sudden and marvelous light before continuing on our mottled passage, the select track of "You Travelled my Heart Inside Out" opens like a delta to new and wide pastures, bringing calm waters to soak the feet of the city. For this new release, Miguel has collaborated with Suzy Mangion, D-fried and the Japanese singer Eri Makino. It was recorded between 2004 and 2007 in London, Barcelona and Tokyo and confirms the crucial role played by Miguel Marín in the development of imaginary soundtracks as an independent musical genre. "You Travelled my Heart Inside Out" shows the influences that Arbol´s music has been subject to in recent years as he moved between three completely different cities, three distinct ways of seeing music and life.

The result is 14 Songs of melancholy & mania.

Baja
Wolfhour (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 22ND)
PS, US Daniel Vujanic´s third full-length release under the alias Baja, entitled, intensively displays the composer/musician´s exciting approach towards a "free electronica" genre. Fusing stripped-down folk, (free-)jazz, twisted pop, electroacoustic sound, maximized-minimalism, indietronics, eerie chamber music and a portion of sedative post-post-rock, "Wolfhour" plays with postmodern expectations as much as possible while avoiding pretentious, highbrow implications. There is at least as much ear-friendly repetition as there is stunning fragmentation. Vujanic´s compositions range from psychedelic piano ambience to sunny uptempo-pop, from electronic jazz fusion to cryptic sample ruins. Leitmotifs appear, evolve and fall apart into transcribed bits of data nebula. Beginnings sound like ends and vice versa. Sounds teleport. Comments on Baja's Sound: "Mirroring the obstinacy and arbitrary nature of human emotions, Vujanic is using electronic music in a way that makes it less a statement about media or a contemporary discussion about subverting conventional songwriting than a tool of matter-of-factness..." - Coke Machine Glow "If the indie rock just isn't getting it done for you anymore, Baja's enveloping, intangible compositions may be just the guide you need to more engaging musical territory. Tiny Mix Tapes ...beautifully strange thing in between postrock, notebookindie, jazzy bitparts and occasional guitar eruptions and - yes, indeed - pop..." (10 points) - VISIONS Magazine.
