Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week

Hauschka "Ferndorf" CD $11.50 (Fat Cat)
Lush, piano-led instrumental suites balancing between minimalism, classical and orchestral post-rock; a mesmerizing ode to the idyllic mountainous environs of the artist's childhood home in rural Germany. Is this a new ripple in the legacy of esteemed artists like Steve Reich, Michael Nyman, Philip Glass and Arvo Pärt? Or is it the download generation’s version of George Winston’s Autumn? Either way it’s exquisite neo-new-age music for indiedom, and highly recommended.

Roy's Vinyl Pick of the Week

Josephine Foster "This Coming Gladness" LP $22.25 (Bo Weavil)
Previously released on CD by Bo' Weavil Recordings, now available on vinyl. This is Colorado-based Josephine Foster's (Born Heller, The Supposed) debut release for Bo Weavil Recordings, and her third full-length album. This Coming Gladness is transcendental fin de siècle songs from one of the great unsung voices and songwriters of our modern times. Josephine Foster unites rarely united royal realms: self-penned operatic art songs cast in freely-rendered blues with electric guitars and drums beating the path along with harp and piano flourishes. She has a voice that was trained for opera, but creaks like ancient mountain folk floating out from a dusty Victrola. She surpasses any "weird-folk" labeling through the sheer timelessness of her songcraft -- making baroque balladry sound new yet remembered from some not-too distant shared American past. Joining her on this recording is electric guitarist Victor Herrero and drummer Alex Nielson.

A Sunny Day In Glasgow
Scribble Mural Comic Journal
PS, US NEW PRESSING on new label. PITCHFORK 8.0! Using mandolins, banjos, noise, samplers & all of the normal band instruments, Philadelphia's ASDIG adds lush female vocals & dance-y rhythms to make dreamy pop music. It succeeds in marrying ASDIG's love of indie rock & languid atmosphere, recalling the best aspects of Slowdive's Souvlaki & early Aphex Twin.

Albion Band
Rise Up Like The Sun
PS, UK Originally released on Harvest in 1978, and reissued by Fledg'ling in 2003, Rise Up Like The Sun is widely acknowledged as one of the finest and most ambitious of English folk-rock albums ever. With John Tams and Joe Boyd overseeing the production, this crack-edition of The Albion Band (with several ex-Fairporters amongst their number) tackle everything from Appalachian love ballads to the music of John Coltrane and Richard Thompson. Remastered and fully annotated with four rare bonus tracks. Special guest appearances from Kate McGarrigle, Julie Covington, Martin Carthy, Andy Fairweather-Low, Richard and Linda Thompson.

Alps
III
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "The band's first studio album but, as the name implies, its third overall, III finds the members of the Alps in good creative health -- perhaps not surprising for a slew of performers who regularly make their name with other projects like Tarentel and ARP, but the trick for any such project lies in its members knowing how to meet in the middle. On this level III is a good success, clearly balancing out solo and improvisational elements with gentle structure on a series of (mostly) instrumentals, equal parts feedback drone/zone and slow, steady melodies and rhythms. It's very much an album placing itself in a larger tradition -- Pink Floyd at their most creative, especially with soundtrack work (not for nothing would one song here be called "Echoes"), and similarly Popul Vuh, and those are simply two of the most obvious references."

Amplifier Machine
Her Mouth Is An Outlaw
PS, US Amplifier Machine began in 2002 with James Dixon (Swordfish, Supagroop, James Dixon) on guitar, Korg & piano, Seth Rees (The Spheres, This Is Your Captain Speaking, I Want A Hovercraft, Seth Rees) on drums, violin, samples, piano & guitar and Alex Jarvis (Automatic, Black Cab, Registered Nurse, Alex Jarvis) on guitar & drums, with the intention of combining their songwriting talents. Something about getting three solo artists together, or maybe something about what rehearsing for so long in a freezing Collingwood warehouse does to the brain, caused the pop-bred members of Amplifier Machine to spiral out into a peculiar music of inquisitive, atmospheric, half-improvised mini-epics. Amplifier Machine is a self-described experiment inanemocratic process and near-improvisation (anemocracy = rule by whim or the wind). Through earnest discussion and endless unending jams, Amplifier Machine came upon The Rule: that when the other two members have settled, it's your turn to change. The Rule was found to be useful, not only in musical terms, but also as a strategy in discussion, advocacy for the devil, and reducto absurdums. Each members' musical approach is informed by knowledge of various artistic processes, including: visual art, drama, the written word, carpentry and car maintenance. Thus, in music and in discussion, Amplifier Machine tends to start with a thesis, then to spiral out into varying antitheses, to arrive at some sort of synthesis. At least, that's the idea. Somewhat of a departure, in terms of sound, for 12k, Her Mouth Is An Outlaw breezes darkly languid chords over a post-rock-meets-experimental structure that is decidedly lacking in micro-electronics. These echoes reach for new 12k-heights while the spirit of ambience and space remain familiar.

Antony & The Johnsons
Another World
PS, US Antony and the Johnsons have emerged with a new album, The Crying Light, which shall be released January 2009. "Another World" is a five-song EP which shall precede said new album. On "Another World", Antony lists the things he treasures about the natural world, and then expresses how much he will miss them. "Another World" is hypnotic and affecting, as well as timely. The EP Another World also includes "Shake That Devil". Part exorcism and part Shangri La, Antony calls out shape-shifting perpetrators, and banishes them one by one. Two other songs, "Crackagen" and "Sing For Me" are pastoral and surreal. Finally the epic "Hope Mountain" closes the EP; an episodic narrative set after a flood; people gather on a mountain to witness the emergence of a holy girl.

Autistic Daughters
Uneasy Flowers
PS, GERMANY Released on CD in March of 2008 on Kranky, Uneasy Flowers is the second album by New Zealand's Autistic Daughters, the intercontinental trio of Dean Roberts (guitar, vocals), Martin Brandlmayr (percussion, computer) and Werner Dafeldecker (guitar, bass). It is also the fourth in a series of records in which Roberts, having begun in more abstract territory in New Zealand's mid-1990s "free noise" ferment, has embraced song, lyric and voice as vessels for topographic and psychoanalytic tracings of the impacts of territory and nomadism on the subject. This is reflected by the shape-shifting nature of the outfit: while Autistic Daughters (whose name comes from a lyric from their first record Jealousy And Diamond) are resolutely a trio, they also work in cinematic format, with ancillary players behind the trio's complex, worm-turning arrangements: in this instance, Chris Abrahams of The Necks, Martin Siewert and Valerio Tricoli. With Uneasy Flowers, Roberts traces the internal and external workings of one protagonist: or, rather, a protagonist who "contains multitudes," a Whitmanian figure that dissolves the unified self. Rather, this character, "Rehana," embodies multiplicity and fragmentation in order to both a) address loss and b) aim toward transfiguration, transcendence. There are traces in the lyrics -- traces of addiction and desire, myth and transformation -- that are obliquely reflected in the music's structure, its uneasy tension between the pop song (the "moment") and experiment (the "process"). In some ways, it reminds of the structural, loop-based cinema of figures like Malcolm LeGrice: taking one moment and stretching it, the better to capture its nuances and to draw out all the repressed material caught in the mise-en-scène, the hidden, cloaked content that erupts when your world spirals out of your control and gets caught in webs of interpersonal politic. The move from intimacy to the capture of the "greater picture" enacted by both lyric and music here resembles a camera dollying out, a shift of perspective unsettling for its vertigo-inducing qualities. Experimental deconstructionism within a pop framework that is contemplative, well-crafted, and gracefully unsettling.

Avenaim, Robbie
Rythmic Movement Disorder
PS, AUSTRALIA Robbie Avenaim's RMD has been a long time in the making. His debut solo release to surface in a career that stretches back to the late 1980s, collects together the better part of a decade's worth of experimentation with the possibilities of prepared percussion, irregular rhythm, modulated pulse and low-tech electronics. Avenaim is perhaps best known for his improvised collaborations alongside the likes of Otomo Yoshihide, Oren Ambarchi (with whom he released the transcendental 'Clockwork') and Keith Rowe. But his work explores more than improvisation and the proof lies in this incredibly detailed electro-acoustic outing. With its title referencing a particular syndrome usually associated with the involuntarily movement of limbs, the pace and form of Rhythmic Movement Disorder reflects this sense of frenetic activity. As uncontrolled as the syndrome may be however, at no point does Avenaim lose focus. Rather his effortless and articulate percussive sensibilities flex to produce a dense and tirelessly refined compositional approach that is brought to bare with stunningly rich and varied results. PRESS: "Clockwork is magical improv." Tiny Mix Tapes (review of Clockwork) "a piece of music that is circumscribed in scope and sound palette, yet highly engaging throughout." Dusted (review of Clockwork) "I did find myself increasingly captivated by its tiny sonic dramas and the group's ability to make something out of next to nothing." BBC (review of Thumb) "Its emphasis on density rather than the in depth exploration of the most minute details and yields truly engaging results on this disc." Foxy (review of Sonic Systems Lab).

PS, US Well known for his orchestra of musically gifted robots. Driven by electric motors, the machines deliver stuttering rhythmic loops. Beatnik Filmstars
The Purple Fez 72 Club Social
PS, UK After years of lo-fi pop madness, Beatnik Filmstars move effortlessly away from their past, and into a new mellower ' Americana ' direction. The humor in the lyrics Beatniks fans have come to know and love, is still there, although there is a, perhaps, darker overall feel. Country tinged twangy guitars, Hammond Organs, Accordions and Harmonicas, replace some of the more experimental noise pop of the past, and songs such as 'Hospital Ward' and 'Sweet Bird Of Sorrow' you could easily imagine someone such as Will Oldham covering. And the slow building- burner 'Nurse My Head' has an almost Spiritualized feel. There are still one or two rockier numbers, but even these have a warmer laid-back vibe going on. And although it is a big step away from their lo-fi poppier past, it still sounds like no one but themselves. This could be your album of the year. Laid-back, blissed out and gorgeous.

PS, US REISSUED finally for the 1st time on 2LP vinyl! Long ago, BRANT BJORK played drums in the mighty Kyuss where he wrote most of the songs, & moved onto Fu Manchu. After that, he was a member of Queens of the Stone Age! Sounds like stoner rock royalty to me! But people, there's another side to Brant other than the groovy stoner rock drumming, & that is the solo project. His 2nd solo release here, originally released in 2002, combines moody desert drives w/ '70s pop sensibilities, his low rider Impala & Brant's very own rawk funk. Check it out!

Bon Vivants
Black Honey
PS, US Post-punk 'n folk-rock (NOT "freak folk"--eeek!), power-pop 'n acid-rock, howlin' at the Georgia moon like a lonely 16-year-old geek even as you stare at so-called middle-age in defiance. Television Personalities Soft Boys Swell Maps 'n Mr. Barrett hisself--post-Cale VU and the ghost of Arthur Lee--kids still 70s-drunk and runnin' free! SNAP! MANGLE! POP! The Bon Vivants come from Atlanta, Georgia. That's Ben Young (rhythm and freak guitars, vocals), Rob Parham (rhythm and lead guitars), Ben Lawless (bass), and Jeff Patch (drums). In 2006, they released a 10" record called SOUL ACTION. It came out on Ben's Old Gold label, which has generally released noise, improv, and experimental stuff. The members of the Bon Vivants worked their way through all of those more outside approaches before settling on a song format for this band. It adds a lot to what they're doing now: the deep knowledge of noise and improv combined with structured pop-rock songs. And on their new Gulcher CD, things come into even sharper focus--the lo-fi cassette sound of SOUL ACTION is gone, revealing the band in crystal clarity and sounding better than ever.

Brun, Ane
Changing of the Seasons
PS,US One of the finest voices of the contemporary folk scene is back. Here is Ane Brun´s third album Changing of the Seasons . It was recorded more or less live at the legendary Atlantis Studio in Stockholm, and at producer Valgeir Sigurdsson´s studio, the Greenhouse, in Reykjavik, Iceland. Sigurdsson´s merits include artists like Björk, Sigur Ros, Maps, Múm, Coco Rosie and Bonnie Prince Billy. Changing of the Seasons consists of 13 new tracks by Ane Brun. The album shows that Ane´s mesmerizing voice has taken new and exciting turns, and it also reveals many proofs of her remarkable songwriting. Just listen to tracks like The Puzzle , Ten Seconds , Lullaby for Grown-Ups , The Fall or Don´t Leave and you´ll know that this is something close to a classic album. The beautiful string arrangements are written by Danish composer Malene Bay-Landin and the young and successful American composer Nico Muhly (who has worked with artists such as Bonnie Prince Billy and Antony & the Johnsons).

Car Commercials
Eric's Diary
PS, US Car Commericals are generally uncomfortable; probably shifty-eyed loners that barely leave the basement. Their brand of strictly personal suburban ooze was borne deep within the recesses of New Jersey, just east of I-95. More specifically, this music springs from inside that unspeakable zone deep within the mind where feelings get very messy. Eric's Diary is the second LP release from Car Commericals, following the out-of-print Judy's Dust LP (Cenotaph) from early 2008. Those confounded by Judy's Dust will be pleased to know that Eric's Diary is where things get...weird. Breath deep, and prepare to scratch yr head faster than you can say 'Home Blitz.' Cogan, Ora
Harbouring
PS, SPAIN Ora Cogan was born and raised on a small island on the west coast of Canada, her house was a recording studio and her Family played host to a constant stream of musicians and travelers. Ora started writing songs and performing at 12. Now based in Vancouver, BC. Ora stitches the blues, old-time and ethereal ballads into her unique sound. Guitar and a voice that could melt butter combine to give an album that sounds like it was recorded in the middle of a cornfield." - AMERICANA UK. "Ora's voice possesses that haunting, soulful quality that seems like its source is coming from deep deep within or beyond. Like a mysterious transplant from decades past, it's as though she opens her mouth and a lilting voice from the '20s comes drifting out. It's beautiful in its simplicity, just her and her guitar and a few banjo and back-up vocal additions."- AQUARIUS RECORDS "Ora plays true folk, the kind that is strong and tells stories with a sense of urgency, be it heartbreak or revolution. Cole, Lloyd & The Commotions
Live At The Marquee
PS, US One of the most successful "indie" acts in the UK during the 80's, & oft-quoted as influences to many other subsequently famous bands. Their knowingly pretentious lyrics & namedropping in songs endeared them to a generation of students & for some time had the band vying w/ The Smiths in terms of popularity. Creedence Clearwater Revival
Cosmo's Factory [40th Anniversary Bonus Tracks]
PS, US Throughout 1969 and into 1970, CCR toured incessantly and recorded nearly as much. Appropriately, Cosmo's Factory's first single was the working band's anthem "Travelin' Band," a funny, piledriving rocker with a blaring horn section -- the first indication their sonic palette was broadening. Two more singles appeared prior to the album's release, backed by John Fogerty originals that rivaled the A-side or paled just slightly. When it came time to assemble a full album, Fogerty had only one original left, the claustrophobic, paranoid rocker "Ramble Tamble." Unlike some extended instrumentals, this was dramatic and had a direction -- a distinction made clear by the meandering jam that brings CCR's version of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" to 11 minutes. Even if it wanders, their take on the Marvin Gaye classic isn't unpleasant, and their faithful, exuberant takes on the Sun classics "Ooby Dooby" and "My Baby Left Me" are joyous tributes. Still, the heart of the album lays in those six fantastic songs released on singles. "Up Around the Bend" is a searing rocker, one of their best, balanced by the menacing murkiness of "Run Through the Jungle." "Who'll Stop the Rain"'s poignant melody and melancholy undertow has a counterpart in Fogerty's dope song, "Lookin' out My Back Door," a charming, bright shuffle, filled with dancing animals and domestic bliss - he had never been as sweet and silly as he is here. On "Long as I Can See the Light," the record's final song, he again finds solace in home, anchored by a soulful, laid-back groove. It hits a comforting, elegiac note, the perfect way to draw Cosmo's Factory -- an album made during stress and chaos, filled with raging rockers, covers, and intense jams -- to a close. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

Darling Downs
From One to Another
PS, US "A record of spare, tender songcraft, whose delicate shifts in tone make the simple alt.country tag inadequate. A brave move for both, brilliantly pulled off. 4 stars."-Uncut. The DDs stand out as the most unlikely of collaborations between longtime members of the fertile Australian rock scene. While it is not at alll insane to imagine the driving force behind SCIENTISTS, BEASTS OF BOURBON & SURREALISTS, KIM SALMON, working with DIED PRETTY's energetic frontman and songwriter RON PENO, the improbable happens when you consider the result that might flow from such a teaming. What are the odds that these two towering figures of Australian music, famous for swaggering, noisy, swampy punk rock (Salmon) & soaring pop rock (Peno) would concoct such a perfect loveletter to American country folk? Armed only with Kim Salmon's custom Cole Clark acoustic guitar and Peno's singular voice & vision, The Darling Downs crafted an almost impossible album: a record of nuanced beauty, a subtle masterpiece that unfolds like a dahlia with each successive spin, giving the listener something new & unexpected at every helping. All from two guys & one pristine guitar. At times Peno channels the spirit of Appalachian folk's high lonesome sound, complete with yips, yelps & howls, while elsewhere his (improvised?!) vocals are hypnotically understated, almost delicate-- threatening to disappear into thin air before crashing down like thunder. Supporting Peno's acrobatic vocal brilliance is Salmon's equally understated, elegant guitar playing, perhaps the most restrained of his career, made all the more stunning when you know the fireworks & growl of which he is capable & for which he is famous. Salmon showcases not only his versatility but playing of such surprisingly refined grace that it defines the album as one of the best listens of 2006. An album of profound subtlety. "With Salmon often infusing the guitar lines with deft lilts & melodies, grasping each song is sometimes as difficult as interpreting a smoke signal in a storm, the ever-shifting qualities of the music making it difficult to categorize. The experience mesmerizes."-The Age (AU).

Davis, Greg & Sebastien Roux
Merveilles
PS, GERMANY Greg Davis and Sébastien Roux are back with their second collaborative album following the acclaimed release "Paquet surprise". "Merveilles", translated from the French word as wonderland, describes the album very fitting as the songs have a very illustrative quality. Where the previous album relied a bit more on sweet melodies and quick changes "Merveilles" explores different sound worlds in depth and illuminates a terrain of diverse emotional scenarios. Silent passages of field recordings are combined with subtle harmonic layers, interrupted by sudden noise eruptions and contrasted by folk like guitar melodies and very concrete sounds, often leaving the listener wondering what the origin of this tone might be. It is a pleasure to have a documentary of this interesting collaboration in which both musicians are able to realize their grown individual expertise. Sébastien Roux, working at the IRCAM and well known for his success in continuing the French line of music concrete in a new and contemporary way, clearly helps to establish the abstract narrative form of this record with arrangements of cut and edited pieces of concrete recordings. The influence of Greg Davis, often described as the anchor figure in the forming of the laptop folk scene, is clearly audible in melodic guitar lines and the construction of dense harmonic drones. But the strength of this collaboration is the fact that Greg Davis and Sébastien Roux combine their musical ideas creating a very unique approach of their own. This record clearly combines elements of serious and popular music in a highly thoughtful and contemporary way, widening the edges of by now established stylistic fields that Davis and Roux once helped to define. "Merveilles" consists of edits of live recordings made during a tour through Europe and the US in 2005 - it is the pleasant proof that electronic music of such richness in detail can be played and composed live.

Dead C
Secret Earth EP
PS, US The Dead C oscillates between two poles. Recent albums explored drones, electronic loops and musique concrete. However, their new album, Secret Earth, proselytizes oceanic feedback, catastrophic drumming and a return to the cripple rock blasts of their early material. Along the axis of The Dead C's recordings, Secret Earth sounds like it was created between Eusa Kills and Harsh 70s Reality. It contains a straightforward (for them) expression of sound, while continually pushing their vast improvisational techniques into a realm of subconscious genius. Just a glance at their peers who are fans (Yo La Tengo, Sonic Youth, Comets On Fire, Black Dice) shows the league in which they play. Any fans of Lightning Bolt, Black Dice, Sunn 0))), Sightings, Acid Mothers Temple, and/or Growing can now appreciate noise rock's forefathers. It's spacious here. Welcome.

PS, US and expansive album; an intimate collection of songs. Much of the material Daniel brought to this record draws on memories of his father who died in 2007, and to whom "In Ear Park" is dedicated. Many of Fred's contributions relate to similar themes of nostalgia and mortality, giving the album an elegiac feel at times. "In Ear Park" is also full of joyous moments, lush production, and concise songwriting. "Department Of Eagles make scratchy, lo-fi Casio-pop with hooks as big as arena anthems" - New York Magazine.

Dylan, Bob
Bootleg Series Vol. 8: Tell Tale Signs
PS, US THE ONION AV CLUB: Bob Dylan's last three studio albums-1997's Time Out of Mind, 2001's "Love and Theft", and 2006's Modern Times-are among his finest, but that doesn't guarantee that their outtakes would add much to his legacy. But Tell Tale Signs, two CDs of scraps from those albums (along with some from 1989's Oh Mercy, plus some live recordings) deserves to be considered an album, because it moves like one. Most of these alternate takes are in fact completely different arrangements: "Someday Baby" is a slow, wounded shuffle here, rather than the hard-chugging blues-rock from Modern Times, while two versions of Time's "Mississippi," each opening a CD, sound nothing like the "official" rendition-or one another. It's easy to understand why Dylan left some of these songs off the albums: The woozy "Born In Time" wouldn't have fit the spookier tone of Oh Mercy, but it's got too much life in it to have stayed put. But why "Dreamin' Of You," a shattered-love song set to a hushed-roar arrangement, was left off Time is hard to figure. The in-concert stuff provides snazzy contrast to the studio songs: "High Water (For Charley Patton)" and "Lonesome Day Blues" crackle and snarl, with Dylan's lead guitar speaking its own tongue. As Dylan's official bootlegs go, this is one of the series' best.

Foster, Josephine
This Coming Gladness
PS, UK Previously released on CD by Bo' Weavil Recordings, now available on vinyl.

French Impressionists, The
Amelia Rosselli
PS, UK LTM is pleased to announce a brand new CD album by The French Impressionists, the modernist ensemble associated with Postcard Records and Les Disques du Crepuscule. The French Impressionists first emerged in 1981 via the Postcard Records School, when founder/pianist Malcolm Fisher made his first recordings with members of Aztec Camera and The Jazzateers. A more permanent line-up released A Selection of Songs on Les Disques du Crepuscule, as well as Christmas single Santa Baby, and found lasting success in Japan. In 2007 the group, now based in Milan ( Italy ), released a well-received new album, Fête. For the third French Impressionists album, Malcolm Fisher has joined forces with gifted Italian singer Sara Cicenia, setting the poems of Amelia Rosselli to original piano music. Born in Paris in 1930, Amelia Rosselli was the daughter of anti-fascist resister Carlo Rosselli, assassinated by Mussolini's agents. She spent her life studying ethnomusicology and taking part in the cultural life of postwar Italy as a literary translator and poet, the latter work marked by bold verbal combinations and deliberate linguistic error. She committed suicide in Rome in February 1996. The deluxe booklet features a selection of original images by Malcolm Fisher, and the text of several of the poems. The duo will tour the Rosselli material in Italy later this year.

PS, US Kings of punk and hardcore Fucked Up return with a mammoth 12" single, second in a series of records based on the Chinese Zodiac. Year of the Pig is an 18 minute 34 second long prog-punk masterpiece featuring lush piano and organ arrangements by Max Danger (The Deadly Snakes) and guest vocals by Toronto's Jennifer Castle. Year of the Pig starts with gentle guitar and soothing organ before heading into darker territory with gruff male vocals offset by Castle's angelic singing and a meandering bass line. It's not until a full 7 and a half minutes in that the track explodes into a keith moon-esque drum workout, which is followed by a one note neu trick that builds up to a thrash attack. It's 'The Wall' as written and recorded by Poison Idea.

Grouper & Inca Ore
Split
PS, SPAIN The sound Liz Harris projects on her records under the moniker Grouper has been said to be deceptively simple, but truly emotional. Layers of vocals processed again and again through loop delays and chains of effects that create gorgeous whirlpools of chants, guitar drones and tape noise, all full of something unique, pure and powerfully beautiful. The kind of magic Harris manages to inject into her recordings is something Eva Saelens knows about quite well, as Inca Ore she has also sung and produced music with a touch of wilderness and witchery. Liz and Eva compiled twenty minutes of unreleased material each on both sides of a C40 recorded at home, a recording that Acuarela now re-releases on CD with new cover art and remastered sound.

Grow Up
The Best Thing / Without Wings
PS, UK The Boutique Label presents the first ever reissues by cult Manchester band Grow Up, active between 1978 and 1981 and a core group on the highly collectible Object Music label. Grow Up were formed in late 1978 by John Bisset-Smith, youthful guitarist with Spherical Objects and an early member of the Manchester Musicians' Collective. Best described as an experimental pop quintet, Grow Up debuted with the six song EP Stay Awake in April 1979, and followed this with debut album The Best Thing in 1980. Early champion Paul Morley (NME) wrote: 'Grow Up's LP is not only extremely commercial; it's a record of mellow, sublime magic that extends the terse sound of the EP to a brilliant, luxurious level. Their sound is a sort of ingenious, sax-propelled chamber pop, of the Ayers/XTC English eccentric line, but it also holds the melancholy depth and sauce of Brechtian cabaret, the twists of Beefheart, the ambiguous tension of Lou Reed... Grow Up has invented a whole new delirious pop world. They fracture tradition, push out and bend into spaces but keep it light, snappy and appealing. The Best Thing is not only Object's greatest release, but a record that is up there with the obvious Mancunian biggies.' After a second single Joanne (pitched as a 'quality pop song'), the band recorded second album Without Wings in 1981. However, after Object ceased operations the group was obliged to release the album on their own label, and as a result of poor distribution the set was barely heard. Digitally remastered, the 42 track double CD set features Grow Up's entire recorded output, as well as two previously unreleased demo tracks. The booklet features archive images and a detailed band biography.

Hearts of Palm UK
For Life
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "is not actually a U.K. band, but rather a Bay Area trio fronted by songwriter and singer Erica Elektra (formerly of the Fancies). With Hearts of Palm U.K., she and cohorts Frankie Rose (percussion and keyboards) and Billy Kaye (cello) create a charmingly naïve-sounding electro-folk hybrid. The songs sound like the bedroom strummings of a talented young woman overlaid with elements of 1980s electronica, which, as it turns out, is exactly what they are -- the songs all started life as recordings of Elektra singing and accompanying herself on the guitar, and she added most of the other sounds later using a Korg workstation... Elektra seems to have that special kind of talent. And the album closes with what, in retrospect, feels like an inevitable cover version of "More Than This" by Roxy Music."

Hiroshi Nar & Nishinihon
S-T
PS, AUSTRALIA Originally issued by Lexicon Devil in 2005. This is a special one-time-only CD, limited to a pressing of 500, of a rare live meeting of minds: power trio Nishinihon (featuring Kawabata Makoto of Acid Mothers Temple) and Hiroshi Nar of the legendary collector-scum/'60s/'70s Japanese uber-psych/garage destruction unit, Les Rallizes Denudes. Nishinihon are the amazing scorch 'n' burn three-man unit who've scarred eardrums for several years now with their acid-rock meltdown. Since his departure from Rallizes in 1978, Hiroshi has kept himself busy with a myriad projects running the scope of no wave, garage punk, Dada-rock and the occasional guest playing on an Acid Mothers disc. Suffice to say, his discography is as long as your arm and much more interesting. Hiroshi Nar with Nishinihon (which said 5 times with a belly of booze can be a great game) celebrates exactly that: a one-off live meeting in Japan in December of 2001 between these musical titans. With Hiroshi penning three of the four songs present, there's definitely a heavy musical similarity to Les Rallizes; both "20 Yen For Each Additional" and "Machiko" possess that crawling, stumbling vibe of his previous band's best '70s work, the combination of his guitar twang and stuttering garage stomp resulting in a kind of Crazy Horse/Quicksilver hybrid. Even more explosive, are the furious guitar explosions of "Are You Lady?" and "Peep Up," two short(er) ditties that get straight to the point and drive it home in a most Stoogely manner. As it says on the back cover of this release: "Do you wanna teste this fuckin' sweet wonder rock world, Brother?" Hell, yes.

Husband & Knife
An End
PS, US Husband & Knife songs are earnest and soulful, at times evoking the spirit of powerful forces like Nick Drake, the young Paul Westerberg and even Johnny Cash in his darkest moments. But as with most worthwhile songwriters, KC Spidle is an artist of his own design, essentially crafting honest songs to make sense of a messed up life. He has always gone right to the bottom, exploring themes of suicide, poverty, alcoholism, and drug abuse. An End chronicles the latest chapter a hard separation and the ensuing fight against spiritual meltdown. This LP has been in the works for awhile. Although KC spent most of the last year touring with his band Dog Day, he managed to record dozens of versions of the album and scrap as many songs. Unlike the naked guitar and vocal approach of his previous effort Welcome Back to the Nothingness of Your Life, on An End, KC carefully crafts each song using multiple instruments, found sounds and objects, field records, and a pile of makeshift recording gear. His obsessive approach has produced a record which blends sound and song to beautifully capture yet another shadowy passage of time. Art by Rachael Parsons.

I Am Robot And Proud
Uphill City
PS, US I Am Robot And Proud is the name Toronto native Shaw-han Liem works under to create his singular brand of hypnotic, beguiling electronic pop music. Uphill City is the highly anticipated full-length follow-up to his very popular 2006 album The Electricity in Your House Wants to Sing. Like the previous record, Uphill City is electronic pop music that energizes the listener and refreshes the ear yet Shaw-han's skill as clever pop composer has grown even more mesmerizing. Shawn-han says the theme of the new record is that of struggle and achievement in the big city. IARAP is syncopated multi-instrumental rhythms and playful, repetitive multi-dimensional melodies -- just the elixir your head needs. Shaw-Han mixes acoustic instrumentation; piano, guitar and drums seamlessly with his unique electronic keyboard sounds and percussive elements. This isn't difficult, experimental IDM that pulls the listener off the left side of the dial. This is complex composition that manages to simply delight. It's an exciting sound that gives one the feeling of flying fast & free through a heavenly modern green world of pop, beauty, and sunshine. Your brain chemicals are sure to be balanced after the first minute into the title track. "Since the 2006 album, i have done some traveling and playing shows around the world and visiting many cities. Its interesting for me to see how everyone is living in different ways but there are still similarities. In English, the word "Uphill" has a kind of a double meaning. It can be positive like "things are looking up", or it can mean something is very difficult like "uphill battle". I thought the city was like a symbol for the challenges that happen in your life." --Shaw-han Liem

Tut Tut, Now Shake Ya Butt

Kossoff With Black Cat Bones, Paul
Paul's Blues
PS, UK This double CD contains the earliest known recordings of the UK's Paul Kossoff (Free), whose tragic death at 25 in 1976 robbed the rock world of one of its finest-ever blues guitarists. Taped at rehearsals with Black Cat Bones in London in 1967, the raw, lo-fi tracks find the teenaged Kossoff already a master of his instrument. Accompanied by musicians including Derek and Stuart Brookes (later to form the legendary Leaf Hound), and featuring a guest appearance from Paul Rodgers (later to form Free with Kossoff), the recordings are of considerable historical importance. They are released here for the very first time, along with a booklet featuring rare photographs, full liner notes and an introduction from the band's drummer, Frank Perry, making the album an essential purchase for all serious rock fans.

S-T [deluxe expanded re-issue]
PS, UK 2008 digitally remastered deluxe two CD edition of the Liverpool band's first (and so far only) album. Alongside the original album on Disc One, there are six previously unreleased session recordings, including 'That'll be The Day', the Buddy Holly cover they recorded for BBC2's The Late Show. Disc Two gathers together material that tells the story of the lengthy and convoluted recording process that preceded the release of the album as the band moved from one producer to the next in search of an elusive sound that never quite materialised. Most of the material on this disc has never been released before and includes the Mike Hedges sessions, the only producer that they recorded the whole album for. This is a definitive presentation of a classic album and will be beautifully packaged in artwork redesigned by the band's original artwork designer, Simon Ryan. 38 tracks.

Leone, Dominique
S/T
PS, US This first pressing is limited to 500 copies with 200 on color vinyl. Dominique Leone wears many hats, only a few faces and has a hundred songs that you haven't heard. In fact, but for his best buddies and the fine folks of Feedelity, very few people have heard more than a peep from him. And yes, he's a him. If you read internet record reviews, you may have seen his name around, though if you hate record reviewers, please don't hold that against him. The truth is, he's a songwriter, producer, singer, lover, fighterÖscratch that, he's one of a growing number of college-educated musical auteurs with more than a slight command of pop history and theory chops, and writing songs for joyous, infatuated people. Perhaps some of them are a bit over stimulated. Perhaps some of them just like good melodies and strange chord progressions that still seem vaguely familiar. Dominique is a "classically trained" musician from Texas who currently operates out of San Francisco. He lists Brian Wilson, Claude Debussy, Andy Partridge, Randy Newman, Glenn Gould, ABBA, Miles Davis, Olivier Messiaen, and Magmaís Christian Vander as personal heroes. He thinks Julie Mehretu is the bomb.

Les Tres Bien Ensemble
Rougeole
PS, SPAIN Many of us were left mesmerized by the precious melodies and the elegant pop that "Doux-amer" had, LES TRÈS BIEN ENSEMBLE's debut album from three years ago. After an intense period and recent change in lineup with the incorporation of Charles Gasqué, the second awaited album of the Catalonian band, "Rougeole", has arrived. "The title, "Rougeole" ("measles" in French) makes reference to something that only time can heal. Time means life and death all at once, something out of human control that inexplicably advances to a particular destiny. "Rougeole" talks about the end of a vital stage, from disappointments to obsessions and desires, from hope to desperation, from excitement to anguish, reliance, nostalgia and indifference." There is no better way to describe an album which finely depicts the most human and exciting details to talk about the contradiction of existing, always with an upbeat tone and vital hope, characteristics which describe each one of the songs of "Rougeole". An album that Françoise Hardy would adore and Jacques Brel would save a special place on his CD rack for and Serge Gainsbourg would give to Jane Birkin, and THE BYRDS would pack this album to help pass the time in the tour van. The best part is that all of these influences, all classical, sober and inspired, LES TRÈS BIEN ENSEMBLE formed their own plan, within the same distance from the past as the present, but above all, full of personality. There is a reason that time is the protagonist of this fantastic second album, "Rougeole".

PS, UK Limited edition (600 copies) double LP pressed on colored vinyl. UK-based Andrew Liles' (Current 93, Nurse With Wound) latest offering has taken nearly three years to hit the shelves and almost as long to create. The music herein is as diverse as the array of guests involved: Danielle Dax, Maja Elliott, Rose McDowall, Karl Blake, The Legendary Pink Dots' Edward Ka-Spel and Volcano The Bear's Daniel Padden all bestow unique and stunning contributions that soar along with Liles' unique brand of minimal surrealism. Obscure, accessible, incomprehensible and exceptional, Ouarda (The Subtle Art Of Phyllorhodomancy) is testament to the breathtaking production talents of Andrew Liles -- arguably the most vital and original soundsmith of recent years.

Lonelyhearts
Disaster Footage At Night
PS, US Ambitious and consistent, Disaster Footage at Night is a great second album. The record finds the Lonelyhearts getting a bit more aggressive than their intimate and well-received debut, Dispatch. Disaster Footage is both concise and expansive, featuring some of the band's shortest and tightest songs as well as epics that stretch out with grand structures. Yet the band's primary strengths, simple but intriguing melodies and daring lyricism, remain intact. The musical palette is varied: Once defined by acoustic guitars and airy synths, here they also employ distorted guitars and crunchy organs. The narratives cover a lot of ground, too: Gender-swapping in Tennessee, post-war trauma, star-crossed love affairs on the alternately drug-fueled and bourgeois streets of the Bay Area, and getting inside the head of the sole black member of the Duke University lacrosse team. Everything is fair game on Disaster Footage at Night.

Lotus Eaters, The
Silentspace
PS, UK On Silentspace, the Lotus Eaters retain the stripped-down sound of their early work but update it with subtle touches of techno and trip-hop. On "Feel It," pulsating synths throb behind the soothing vocals of Coyle and Saree Williams. The Lotus Eaters had never used a female singer before, and the addition of Williams' lovely voice on "Feel It" heightens the track's sensual ambiance. While the jangly "Sara" is appealingly retro, the Lotus Eaters are most impressive when they're attempting the unexpected like the sped-up trip-hop rhythms of "Face of the Century" or the otherworldly psychedelia of "Lost in Flow." Fans of the group's youthful innocence might be stunned by the graphic bondage scenes detailed in the gripping "Minimal Emotion," but the Lotus Eaters grew up in their long absence. However, the band didn't get old; they simply got better. It might be difficult for some to connect with Silentspace at first, but it's almost impossible to let go after repeated spins; like the group, it's a sleeping beauty.

Lowfish
Frozen & Broken
PS, CANADA Lowfish, a.k.a. Toronto's Gregory De Rocher, ranks among the worlds leading electronica producers. He has released records on some of independent dance music's most influential labels, has charted in North America and is noted for his punishing sets of live electronics. His clinical production style is both very modern and built on the DNA of early new wave and IDM. Sometimes dark, often melodic and multi-layered, Lowfish tracks strive for meaning, timelessness and quality. The weapons of choice are what they have been from the start; semi-operational analog synths, temperamental drum machines and scratchy recording gear. The name Lowfish is a reference to these dusty machines and his early lo-fi "ish" sound - thus Lowfish. With six albums and a stack of singles behind him, 2008 has seen Lowfish aggressively pushing his sound forward. He's been hard at work distilling his pristine electro and throbbing analog buzz into a new techno variant. The playfulness of yesteryear is somewhere deep in the background with the fine detail of machinery and staccato bass lines taking the fore. The result is "Frozen and Broken". Ten brand new tracks of edgy analog electronica reminiscent of Lowfish's famed Suction Records era IDM and an aberrant dance floor sound built from his most deviant sound palette to date.

Magic Lantern
High Beams
PS, US After far, far too long lost in the merch-less dark, the LBC's most married band, Magic Lantern, finally beam down the blinding full-length psych-statement we always knew they had hidden inside. It only took the Southern California sector a single 5-song demo plus a handful of incense-dense komische live flights to fully fall under the spell of ML's oncoming headlights, but now the rest of the globe can hop on the band's wild wagon. Hold on. High Beams throws out the total 20-sided die of the their illuminative powers, from stomping, storming show staples like 'Deathshead Hawkmoth' and 'Vampires In Heat' through to Sun Araw-vibed chime trancers ('Feasting On Energy') and even a good time acid-addled feedback boogie ('Cactus Raga'). These are all of the Lanterns' classic long-form anthems, captured in glorious high-def, thanks to Bobb Bruno's attuned production/recording capabilities and a radiant mastering job courtesy of James Plotkin. The riffs rip, the drums destroy, and the organ burns a hole in the sun. Walk into the light. Max, Agathe
The Silver String
PS, US The transformative debut from this French violinist. At times her work approaches the supersonic escape velocity of Tony Conrad; elsewhere, she introduces delicate repeating threads, then slowly weaves them into a fabric of vast, billowing sound more reminiscent of Steve Reich. A remarkably accessible collection of tracks, one that bridges the gaps between minimalism, post-classicism, the avant garde, krautock, & plain old-fashioned pop - there's even a nod to the High Lonesome Raga as filtered through Henry Flynt.

McGregor, Chris
Our Prayer
PS, UK Another previously-unreleased gem from South African pianist/composer Chris McGregor and his cohorts in '60s UK free jazz. Our Prayer was culled from the same sessions that produced the also never-released Up To Earth in 1969 and was produced by Joe Boyd and engineered by John Wood at Sound Techniques studio. The previous year they had signed to Joe Boyd's illustrious Witchseason production company alongside Fairport Convention, John and Beverley Martyn, Nick Drake and the Incredible String Band. Our Prayer comprises a magical trio set, focusing on McGregor's piano playing, accompanied by the Blue Note's Louis Moholo on drums and Barre Phillips on double bass. Both Our Prayer and Up To Earth records were planned for release in 1969 before being shelved as the McGregor group morphed into the spectacular big band, the Brotherhood of Breath, and all energies were transferred to recording the Brotherhood's debut album.

Midori Hirano
Klo:yuri
PS, JAPAN The intricate fusion of the piano, strings, and electronics created a structural beauty reminiscent of chamber music in her first album "LushRush." The album founded upon her musical sophistication foretold a new generation of music and was best illustrated by listeners as "post classical." Almost two years since then, Noble is happy to once again release an album by Midori Hirano in her 2nd album, "Klo;yuri". Midori's murmuring vocal heard only in a few of the songs in her previous album are back again in almost half of the tracks with a slightly stronger voice in comparison to the last. The artist worked alone on almost everything from the composition to remix in her previous album. This time, Hiromits Shoji of Soundworm has taken on the mix and mastering to bring tenfold the depth and strength to the album with his unique musical structuring. The tingling excitement of improvisation and the spiritual melody like sacred music...the fragile but thoughtful voice and suggestive lyrics like an ancient European... Midori Hirano's new album is a woven fabric of originality that proves the artistic maturation of the artist and her sounds with its deep stoicism and beauty is awaiting for you to enter its labyrinth of sound.

Molina, Juana

PS, US The fifth release from Argentinean artist Molina is a brave departure from her previous work. It's every bit as personal and intimate, but pronounced with rhythms and with bold low end added to the mix. A hypnotic record, restless, alive with melodies that surface imperceptibly before burrowing into your brain. The tracks are informed by an ever-shifting and polymorphous sense of groove. The rhythms flow over and inside each other, played out on wood and cymbal and bombo leguero, and woven from electronic glitches. David Byrne, NPR, and The NY Times are some of her many supporters.

Stray Age
PS, US The debut by Kentucky's Moore is a folk record, evoking certain feelings, but there's a gentle approach to its sound and the way Daniel's voice phrases his words. Joe Chiccarelli (The Shins, U2, The White Stripes) took on co-production, recording, and mixing duties. "Stray Age" is rich with understated complexities that take you to places Nick Drake and Neil Halstead do.There's a soft swing in the vocals reminiscent of Chet Baker. Mountains
Sewn
PS, US 2006 release, restocks. "Apestaartje co-founders Brendon Anderegg and Koen Holtkamp follow up their critically-acclaimed self-titled debut as Mountains with this second offering of slowly evolving sound. Recorded over several lengthy excursions outside the confines of the city in upstate New York and Connecticut, Sewn invokes a sense of ease and delicate precision. A beautiful combination of clean crisp texture and warm pulsating harmony that shows a group developing and expanding their sound with an extreme attention to detail that reflects new layers in each melody and texture. Eight tracks that combine live instrumentation (guitar, piano, accordion, harmonica etc..), binaural field recordings and resonant electronic processing to create a wide range of electro-acoustic experience. From the folkish acoustic guitar of 'Sewn Two' and 'Bay,' to the densely layered organic din of 'Hundred Acre' and the psychedelic minimalism of 'Sheets', Sewn shows a group as equally invested in melody as it is in experimentation. New Radiant Storm Kings
Drinking In The Moonlight
PS, US Northampton, MA/New York city indie rockers New Radiant Storm King deliver the tightest, hookiest and most diverse record in their distinguished career. Recorded over six months in deep, rural Massachusetts, Drinking in the Moonlight proves once again that guitarists/vocalists Peyton Pinkerton and Matt Hunter along with bassist Caleb Wetmore and drummer J.J. O'Connell write some of the most imaginative and memorable American rock. Approaching their twentieth year as a band, NRSK have gracefully matured as song smiths while retaining their prowess at crafting unconventional yet infectious melodies. Drinking in the Moonlight is a sonic mix of urban and rural, sporting distorted yet wiry pop with a marked focus on narrative within their song writing -- trademarks gratifying to longtime fans. Time spent in other bands (Pinkerton in The Silver Jews and The Pernice Brothers; Hunter in J. Mascis & The Fog and The Wharton Tiers Ensemble) has honed the Pinkerton/Hunter attack musically and lyrically. Over the course of thirteen songs, Drinking in the Moonlight addresses topics as varied as random street violence, infidelity and subsequent pregnancy, exorbitant winter heat bills and even an open condemnation of organized religion (Thank God -Ed). Drinking in the Moonlight was recorded with longtime NRSK engineer Mark Alan Miller (Cordelia's Dad, J. Mascis & The Fog) at his Slaughterhouse Studios in Westhampton, MA. NRSK will tour Fall 2008. TRACKS: 1) Soporific Slump - A few more pints and then back to your place on 1st Avenue. 2) Undignified - Hopefully you can convince everyone that you actually are being your natural self - and have been lying up until just now. 3) Senseless - If a random act of brutal violence changed your life for the better, how would you explain it to anyone? To yourself, even? 4) Islander - She could never handle the mainland for more than a few days at any given time. 5) Little Ice Age - Sometimes the idea of summer seems both impossible and absurd. 6) Anything Can Happen - And usually does, if you're lucky (or not). 7) New Paltz Waltz - Instrumental levity. 8) Eight Steps Closer - Slouching towards Echo Park, with a cosmo in her hand. 9) After the After Hours - Guns, drugs and hipsters - in way over their heads. 10) Midnight Comes - Time horizons always seem to stretch into forever on a first date. 11) Eraser - Lick your wounds and don't look back for a second. 12) Clouds Cover Everything - Are you really sure that your memories are totally your own? 13) Fall Prey - The world is flat. The sun revolves around it. We've progressed on so many fronts save one.

Noriko, Tujiko/Lawrence English/John Chantler
U
PS, AUSTRALIA Tujiko Noriko joins with collaborators Lawrence English and John Chantler for 'U', a record of orbiting themes, esoteric lyrical wordplays and warm analog infused song-forms. Following on from the acclaimed 'Blurred In My Mirror (ROOM40), 'U' is an LP of phases and exchanges between Paris and Brisbane over a three year period. Like its recording process, it unfolds with a time-lapse exposure - capturing moments of absolute loss and unrelenting ecstasy. It's a record of extended technique and unconventional method (both in terms of song writing cycles and production), but most of all U is a swelling passage through the rare and eccentric reality Tujiko Noriko evokes with her curiously distant songs. U, a title chosen for its 'shape'(reflecting the collaborative nature of the record), is by far one of Noriko's most affecting records. It's also one of her most eclectic, littered with songs that are telling of the world in which Tujiko Noriko finds herself. PRESS (on Blurred In My Mirror): "This is not an album that you skip to a middle of a song, every second on the album is embraced by the previous. As such, it's hard to imagine that there'll be a better batch of glitchy electronic pop released this year." Stylus Magazine "the album manages a measure of magic when it rests right at the nexus point of song and sculpture, pop and experiment." Pitchfork "one of the most intriguingly inviting voices on the planet." XLR8R

Norman was the church boy holding his own in the decadent world of rock music, an insubordinate jesteRr ewc/oa rrdeibnegllious streak that stretched out long before the birth of punk, & a performer whose raw energy, spiritual force, & playful wit made him the endearing rock icon he is today. A man unfairly saddled w/the hefty burden of the "father of Christian rock," yet he is a singer whose defiant lyrics & actions were shunned by the church-going status quo. "Anthology" compiles the most loved recordings of the recently deceased & dearly missed Larry Norman.

Oasis
Dig Out Your Soul
PS, US New album. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Colorful and dense where Don't Believe the Truth was straightforward, Dig Out Your Soul finds Oasis reconnecting to the churning psychedelic undercurrents in their music, sounds that derive equally from mid-period Beatles and early Verve. This is heavy, murky music, as dense, brutal, and loud as Oasis has ever been, building upon the swagger of Don't Believe and containing not a hint of the hazy drift of their late-'90s records: it's what Be Here Now would have sounded like without the blizzard of cocaine and electronica paranoia."

Organ, The
Thieves EP
PS, US Posthumous final recordings from pre-Mermaids oufits. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Though the Organ broke up in late 2006, the group reunited a little over a year later to record the handful of tracks that would have appeared on their second album, had they survived long enough to finish it. Thieves finds the Organ's music evolving even after the fact -- these songs are quieter and more contemplative than nearly anything on Sinking Hearts or Grab That Gun... Thieves' production is cleaner and more direct than the band's previous work, highlighting Sketch's haunting voice and melodies... Some of the Organ's prettiest and most mature moments are tucked away here, and Thieves plays like a fitting wake for the band."

Pains Of Being Pure At Heart
Everything With You b/w The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart
PS, US Since forming in early 2007, the POBPAH have released a handful of EPs & comp tracks on classy labels like Slumberland, Atomic Beat & Cloudberry, each one issued to greater anticipation. The band's breathless noise-pop sound has garnered them critical acclaim from such quarters as Stereogum, Big Takeover, Skatterbrain, Drowned In Sound, Clash Magaine & many others. The 1st cut is from their debut album (due Jan.2009) - a tidy distillation of all the great noise-pop precedents - early MBV, House of Love, Pale Saints, Rocketship. An infectious blast of pop perfection - timeless noise pop gems.

Panthers
Goblin City (Holy Ghost! Remixes)
PS, US Ex-Troubleman group & anthemic stoner rock act PANTHERS commissioned remixes for their single "Goblin City," the lead trk from their 2nd album, 'The Trick' (Vice, 2007). Around the release of that album, they asked HOLY GHOST! & RUN-ROC (aka DJ McNany) to execute respective remixes of this single. The remixes are properly released here together on vinyl. Holy Ghost! deliver one of the most relentlessly snappy disco dubs in quite some time, while Run-Roc concocted an excellent, old school acid house remix.

Plinth/Textile Ranch
The Rest, I Leave To The Poor
PS, UK "The Rest, I Leave To The Poor" is a postal collaboration between Plinth (Mike Tanner) and Textile Ranch (Glen Johnson of Piano Magic). This 44-minute piece may structurally resemble a classical composition - divided as it is into several interlocking stanzas - but it's difficult to place it comfortably within the realm of modern music. If anything, 'The Rest....' evokes the otherworldly, fantastical obsessions of the Victorians (Conan Doyle, Lear, Grandville, Wellcome, etc) through means of meticulously manipulated instrumentation, samples and voice.

Preston, Joe & Daniel Menche
Cerberic Doxology
PS, US Dualdisc. Anthem Records is pleased to present Cerberic Doxology, a single piece statement from Joe Preston and Daniel Menche, and an epic tome carved from some form of primordial stone. As an album containing a regular CD audio side in addition to a DVD audio/video side, this release breathes life musically and visually on three different planes of existence. Firstly, as a 25 minute audio recording, which is born of a vocal chant evocation from both Joe and Daniel, of which layers expand, contract, and weave within each other in an otherworldly, mysterious dronescape, in a way that feels like a moment of mystical/mythical creation akin to Gyorgy Ligeti's introduction to the monolith in the film 2001 (or Ash Williams' mispronunciation of the Necronomicon and its results, if you prefer). Secondly (on side 2 of this CD/DVD dualdisc), as DVD audio, specifically mastered for this intent, which enables the absolute full range of the recordings high and lows to be acutely present, and thus expanding an already head shrinking experience. And thirdly, as the DVD audio with a full-length video, culled from footage of the mysterious landscape of the Pacific Northwest, exhibiting its terrain, volcanic activity and atmospheric disturbances, from obscure locations throughout the region, in addition of footage of Sam Hill's Stonehenge memorial located in southeastern Washington State. Combined with the unusually forceful subtleties of the audio makes this an experience to behold a multitude of occasions, with different effect, depending on one's mind-frame. Cerberic Doxology is presented as a CD/DVD Dualdisc, packaged within a standard CD jewel case, with a large front sticker stating each artist's name and affiliation, along with a clear descriptor of the format's regular CD as well as DVD capabilities.

"Energetic guitar rock that sounds like Gang Of Four and early Joe Jackson doing battle with a colossal Japanese robot. Quatrain
Quatrain [Bonus Tracks]
PS, US Mention the sole and frighteningly rare 1968 LP by L.A.'s Quatrain among devoted psych collectors, and the response will likely be a unison chorus of solemnly nodding heads. Slip a copy of this lost, heavy monster on the turntable, however, and those same heads will bang hard in wah-wah-smeared, acid-rock ecstasy. From '65 to '69, Quatrain was a regular attraction on the Southern California scene, working as the house band at the popular Topanga Corral and up and down the Sunset Strip. 'We played places like the Hullabaloo, the Stratford,' recalls Quatrain drummer Jim Lekas. 'We shared bills with The Byrds, Love, Buffalo Springfield, went up against Spirit in a battle of the bands. We used to play with The Leaves all the time. It was just an incredible period, so much great music going on. And we were right there in the middle of it.' Produced and engineered by future Neil Young producer David Briggs, Quatrain burns with stinging fuzz-guitar leads ('Fragments,' 'Ask Me No Questions,' the cryptic 'Flowing Robes') and floats and flickers like orange sunshine ('Rollin,' 'The Tree')." Featuring 8 previously-unissued bonus tracks, and extensive liner notes that fold out into a poster.

Religious Knives
The Door
PS, US Consisting of members of Double Leopoards, Mouthus, etc, RK has been an active 4-piece for a little more than a year now. They have presided over a pair of twelve-inches, a couple of collections of out of print singles, long gone burns & one full-length. Here they traced a path away from the clamour they once knew, bathing slight guitars, interlocking vocals & solemn basslines in reedy organs, recalcitrant modular synths & spare Kraut repetition. The seemingly tin eared would call it noise, but in these 8 hands such a set plays as anything but, instead a (cough) syrupy stroll in search of the ghosts of rock's classicist past.

Tar Babies
Face The Music/Respect Your Nightmares
PS, AUSTRALIA Originally issued on the Lexicon Devil label in 2005. In 1982, the Tar Babies were burning up half-pipes and blazing venues with their hyper-speed punk rock. More well known for their late '80s LPs on the famed SST label, in which they veered towards a more DC-influenced "punk-funk" sound, and the subsequent acclaim that their drummer, Dan Bitney, acquired with Tortoise, the Babies were also one of the great, and tragically overlooked Midwestern hardcore bands of the original era, releasing two phenomenal 12" EPs on their own Bone Air imprint in '83 and '85, respectively. This CD hopes to rectify that obscurity by putting these two long-out-of-print discs back onto the marketplace for the first time on CD, with a ton of bonus material as a special treat. Inside you will find: The complete Face The Music and Respect Your Nightmares EPs, which featured early production work by Bob Mould and Butch Vig; "The Ocean" track from the Master Tapes 2LP; "Caleb's Getting Mad" from their 5-song demo cassette from 1982 (the other tracks are on FTM); five previously-unreleased songs from the era, taken from the vaults of the TB's Bucky Pope, as well as alternate versions of two EP tracks; reproductions of the original artwork from the EPs, plus a collage of flyers, photos and reviews from the era in a 10-panel booklet. Liner notes from Bucky Pope himself. All of this has been digitally edited, sequenced and fiddled with by Melbourne-via-Chicago audio whiz-kid, Casey Rice. The music the Tar Babies were pumping out in '82/'83 was an awesome collision course of Black Flag-style tension/release and heart-thumping thrash copped from a heavy diet of Minor Threat 7"s. Think the ferocity of early Die Kreuzen, Negative Approach, Necros, and you're in the ballpark. By '85, things had changed. The pace had slowed a touch, and most of all, Bucky was pumping out highly inventive riffs in an angular Eddie Hazel/Hendrix/Greg Ginn vein. Sharing the stage with a host of HC heroes and a bevy of SST folks criss-crossing the U.S. on their never-ending tours, the band caught the attention of Mr. Ginn and the rest is history. That is, of course, except for their 1982-1985 output. That is all here, and it's a rip-snorting collection. 25 tracks and 47 minutes of trailblazing, fist-pumping slampit rama-lama from a time when people really meant it.

These Are Powers
Taro Tarot
PS, US "Taro Tarot" is the finest document of THESE ARE POWERS' prowess to date. Following the departure of original drummer Ted McGrath, Chicagoan Bill Salas brings together the bands' musical ideas concisely and cohesively in just over 20 minutes. It is no easy feat, but on "Taro Tarot", These Are Powers demonstrate to the world the power they wield. The low end undercurrent emanating from Noecker's sub bass tones is like no sound you have ever heard from the four stringed instrument, while the tribal and primitive rhythm of "Chipping Ice" shows that while this band's music is known to be a heavy sonic excursion, you can also fucking dance to it. The frequency-analyzed sounds of "Cockles" are a thing of beauty, while "Twin Remains" shares a melodic sensibility with SST-era Sonic Youth. These Are Powers pack an eclectic infinity into these six tracks, channeling far-flung musical ideas with their undeniable intuitive sense into an epic, focused statement. Upon one listen to "Taro Tarot" you will realize These Are Powers have arrived.

These Are Powers
Terrific Seasons
PS, US Originally released in 2007, "Terrific Seasons" is THESE ARE POWERS' first full-length album. "Terrific Seasons" takes off with a punk-like ferocity, recalling the halcyon days of Silver Apples and Throbbing Gristle. It is a poly-rhythmic, frantic, unconventional work that finds THESE ARE POWERS utilizing border-line conventional song structures to harness their abstract sounds. From the urgency of opener "You Come With Nothing" to the anthemic croon of "Little Sisters of Beijing," the distant and sinister meditative sounds of "Drawing Water" and to the sprawling jams of "Pizza Master Ice Cream Palace," the band covers a tremendous amount of ground throughout their debut.

It's completely analog and almost completely instrumental, aside from a cameo by Aesop Rock on lead-off single "Dirt." Tuneful Trolley
Island In The Sky
PS, UK Discovered and championed by Jay And The Americans, The Tuneful Trolley were a psych-pop sextet with a knack for writing and performing solid Beatles-esque rock. With a sizable following in their home base of Long Island, New York, The Tuneful Trolley released Island In The Sky in 1968 to national indifference, this despite containing all the elements of an instant smash. Island In The Sky is a glorious atoll, indeed, landscaped with fuzz guitars, oboes, melodic Beach Boys-esque harmonies, and garage pop sensibilities. All this from a band in their mid-teens! The lads wrote most of their material, and recorded their own tracks! This first-ever CD issue of their long-out-of-print Capitol LP is supplemented by rare Mono single mixes, none of which have ever been issued on CD. The 16-page color booklet also includes rare, unpublished photos and comprehensive liner notes that feature the participation of original band members. Produced by Sandy Yaguda of Jay And The Americans. Remastered from the original master tapes!

Urges, The
Psych Ward (Digipack Packaging)
PS, US The Urges hail from Dublin, Ireland, but you wouldn't guess it to listen to their debut album, Psych Ward. To judge from these 12 tracks, the Urges live in some enchanted land where paisley and Nehru have never gone out of style, the sneer is the favored means of human expression, and fuzzboxes and Farfisa organs are naturally occurring phenomena. The Urges don't miss a trick on Psych Ward, capturing the mid-'60s garage rock sound with uncanny accuracy, from the inspired three-chord stomp of the tunes and the tough, fuzzy crunch of the music to the swagger of Jim Walters' lead vocals and Circo Perrotti's proudly analog production. There are moments where Psych Ward sounds just like some lost session from the Standells or the Chocolate Watchband until you read the credits and realize the Urges wrote and performed these songs themselves, in the 21st century.

Various
1970's Algerian Proto-Rai Underground
PS, US This is Raï music from Algeria as you've not heard it before. In the early 1970s, a new group of singers and musicians were operating on the northwest coast, and what they pioneered was a sound that eventually reached worldwide status by the end of the decade; however, their names are relatively unknown to this day outside Algeria. This crucial and defining period of the development of Raï is criminally ignored and overlooked by Algerian music historians and Raï fans. Due to censorship and government-controlled music diffusion, this scene and lyrical style was forced underground and banned from broadcasts, yet slowly built a small following around the seaside cabarets of Wahran (Oran). This period witnessed the rise of artists such as Groupe El Azhar ("The Flowers" group) and Messaoud Bellemou, who can comfortably be considered the godfather of the modern Raï sound. His group, L'Orchestre Bellemou, rewrote a heritage of centuries by using modern instruments and especially the trumpet, which became, during the 1970s, the backbone of the Wahrani genre. Reinterpreting the gasba melodies on trumpet, Bellemou backed singers such as Boutaiba Sghir and Sheikh Benfissa who carried on the lyrical tradition of their forefathers singing about daily preoccupations and problems as well as love affairs, alcohol, or simply owning an automobile! Toward the late 1970s, Cheb Zergui brought a newer ingredient: an electric guitar with a wah-wah pedal. Thankfully, the late 1960s saw the development of vinyl pressing in Algeria. This new industry allowed many small artists including the Wahrani "scene" to record and release singles documenting their repertoire. This compilation is a selection of this proto-Raï scene's vinyl 45s. This LP is limited to a one-time pressing of 1500 copies on 180 gram vinyl and comes in a full-color deluxe gatefold jacket with photos of the musicians and informative liner notes by the man who compiled it, Hicham Chadly.

Parlez Vous Pop?
PS, GERMANY Parlez Vous Pop? is a compilation of 16 enchanting songs in broken French from the '60s and '70s. French is the language of love. The words flow as smoothly as a vintage Bordeaux, like the suggestively sweet nothings Serge Gainsbourg whispered into Jane Birkin's ear. Ah, France, famed for laisser-faire, laisser-allez and exquisite cuisine -- something patently lacking in the wirtschafts-wonderful Germany of the '50s and '60s (not to mention the United Kingdom). Songs sung in French were not only pleasant to the ear, they promised a better, more luxurious life. Even chansons laced with melancholy hinted at a certain lightness of heart. Some artists -- or their record labels -- simply wanted to see if they could make an impression on the French market, singers like Roy Black, Mary Roos, Peter Kraus or Freddy Quinn, as well as British stars such as Dusty Springfield and Sandy Shaw. Others, notably Reinhard Frédérik Mey, Caterina Valente, Vicky Leandros, were genuine Francophiles and released entire albums in the French language. For some -- Manfred Krug, Alexandra, Marianne Faithful or Ireen Sheer, for example -- it was more a question of having a bit of fun singing one or two French numbers to include on their LPs. The majority of them may have struggled to perfect their French accent, but the near-misses are perhaps the most charming of all. While some of the German performers get very close indeed, with Marlene Dietrich and Manfred Krug earning particular recognition from their French counterparts, the British singers just cannot roll their "R"s or accentuate the "E" at the end of a word. Elsewhere, Alexandra sounds like an exiled East Prussian and Lys Assia gets her tenses in a twist but ce n'est pas grave -- as long as it swings. The booklet contains liner notes from the unique, magnifique Françoise Cactus, vocalist with the Franco-German band Stereo Total.

Wee Scary Beasties
Creepy Lullabies (2X7")
PS, US BOO! The Beasties are back with a new collection of tunes that will help pull the cobwebs right out of your ears. But don't let the name fool you; Chicago's kiddie band crew more regularly known as the Wee Hairy Beasties follow up their 2006 Bloodshot Records debut album, "Animal Crackers," with a treat just in time for your Halloween sweet tooth. WEE SCARY BEASTIES-led by MEKONS JON LANGFORD and SALLY TIMMS with the incredible vocal prowess of KELLY HOGAN (Neko Case, Pine Valley Cosmonauts) and the mighty jug band talents of front porch old-timey blues band DEVIL IN A WOODPILE-have formed their own record label, WEE BEATZ, to bring you a second dose of kid-friendly tunes that adults will love too. WSB get in the holiday groove with the sweet and spooky "CREEPY LULLABIES," a double 7" that will haunt the dreams of both parents and kids alike. This adorably eerie two single set tells nighttime stories about lonely vampires, monsters busting a move, and a super-rocking punk jumper about a veggie-patch dweller named Pumpkinhead! Listeners beware: the closing lullaby and Wee Scary Ending will make the werewolves howl from miles away. There are songs with a spooky finger-popping flavor, fresh ghoul-filled harmonies, a secret special message to listeners and as always, Devil in a Woodpile's bright and bouncy instrumentationwashboard, slide guitar, thumping upright bass, clarinet and harmonica-percolates like the best Harman-Ising cartoon bug band that ever was.

A Cuckoo
Destination Unknown (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21ST)
PS, US "There is something reassuringly old fashioned about A Cuckoo, a singular individual who dwells on the Yorkshire Moors and has a fixation with sepia-toned Edwardiana, music boxes and the like... MOJO would like to add that we hope that A Cuckoo's forthcoming album will be available on 78. It would seem impolite if it wasn't." - MOJO By the age of 17 A Cuckoo had already played in respected UK bands Blue Aeroplanes and House of Love. In his early 20s he started to create and produce his own music. In the meantime he ended up working nearly full time as a composer for the BBC, which is where he "learnt how to orchestrate and paint sonic pictures." Quietly A Cuckoo began putting some of the rough ideas that he was developing up on MySpace. The page quickly began to gather a list of complimentary comments and was visited by A Girl called Eddy (former Le Grand Magistery recording artist, currently signed to Anti), who asked what the situation was with the release of his material. "Um, they're only rough snippets!" replied A Cuckoo, so A Girl Called Eddy put him in touch with Matthew Jacobson from Le Grand Magistery who insisted he finish the album so he could release it. The result is 'Destination Unknown'. A magical and dusty esoteric mix of styles that seems to effortlessly project a work of humble yet visionary compositions and poetry. Filled with music boxes, accordions, mandolins, bells, a quartet, acoustic guitars, and endless melody. "Great songs" - Chris Difford of Squeeze

Recommended for lovers of AMM, Henry Flynt, and Hijokaidan. A Handful of Dust are a group consisting of a core duo of Bruce Russell (The Dead C) and Alastair Galbraith. Blithe Sons, The
The Great Orthochromatic Wheel (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21ST)
PS, US The Great Orthochromatic Wheel is The Blithe Sons first full-length release since 2004. In the years since the California duo of Loren Chasse and Glenn Donaldson may have traversed poppy fields and swam to aqua cities though mostly they've remained active with their Jewelled Antler offshoots: Ov, Of, and Child Readers (Chasse ) or Skygreen Leopards and Flying Canon (Donaldson) and both in Thuja. These five songs combine nature's melodic pull and minimalist songs forms summoned by a miniature orchestra of eclectic instruments. Each LP side flaunts a different depth of the Sons, one recorded outdoors and the other inside. The indoor set consists of slow-motion ballads built on hymn-like organ, nylon string guitar, analog drum machine & stark percussion. The outdoor side offers a web of exotic wind-instruments & battery-powered electronics reverberating in a cavernous hall cut in the side of a sea-cliff. Each 500 copies contain a download coupon for a free MP3 version of the album. The Blithe Sons have released five other full-length albums since 2001 for Family Vineyard, Chocolate Monk and Jewelled Antler. In 2007 the Sons curated the sixth volume of Music Fellowship's triptych series bringing together Pekko Kappi and Claypipe for a three-way split

Bookish, Simon
Everything/Everything (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21ST)
PS, US An unpredictable and dramatic "big band song cycle about science and information", Everything/Everything is a new departure for Simon Bookish, being his first album for TOMLAB. Additionally, whilst previous Simon Bookish releases have been informed by the sounds of digital synthesizers, Everything/Everything does away with them entirely to focus on live instruments. Scored for an ensemble dominated by saxophones, brass, piano, harp and Far sa organ, it features luminaries from both the jazz and experimental classical music scenes. Whilst this is almost certainly his most pop oriented release to date, Everything/Everything, as it's name suggests, nds room for moments of racing Philip Glass minimalism, lop-sided disco, expressionist cabaret, and even an eery ambient interlude. Lyrically, the album's concept is "the - good of information" in our modern age, taking in chemistry and ecology, language and art, sometimes surreal, sometimes humorous, sometimes provocative, a weird blur of fact and action, delivered in Bookish's distinctive English eccentric vocal. It's only natural that Simon Bookish would want to tackle this chaos of stuff, since 'Simon Bookish' is the pseudonym of London-based composer Leo Chadburn, whose diverse recent work has included everything from sound-art installations in Bregenz, Austria, improvisation and guest spots with Leafcutter John and Polar Bear's Seb Rochford, and computer music for contemporary dance at the Royal Opera House to an acclaimed appearance with the National Theatre as "The Singer" in Brecht's "Caucasian Chalk Circle".

Connors, Loren
The Moon Last Night (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21ST)
PS, US The Moon Last Night perfectly captures the complex and contemporary guitar style of Loren Connors - totally desolate yet wound in echoy, rich black clouds that weep of Mississippi ghost blues and chiming strings. This two-part suite combines the artist's love of choral music, Giacinto Scelsi and the naked Venusian guitar style he evangelized across a string of private press LPs in the late 1980s. Conjured solely from a Fender six-string and reverb effects, solitary notes swirl and loft gently from distant points before collecting into booming clusters. Recorded in Connors' Brooklyn apartment during the winter of 2008, the rustles of clothes and a creaking chair appear throughout. Like a kaleidoscope or the cover art itself - a 1973 painting by Connors - subterranean layers of composition and melodic streams are uncovered in each listen. Pressed in an edition of 500 one-sided translucent yellow LPs Connors has released over 50 albums since his 1978 debut, and since 1999 he has recorded over two dozen solo and collaborative albums with Suzanne Langille, John Fahey, David Grubbs, Christina Carter, Jandek, and Jim O'Rourke.

There is an unmistakable flavor of The Velvet Underground to be had, but Crystal Stilts' spectral avant-garage also references the spooked '60s Texas psych of The 13th Floor Elevators and Red Crayola, the gothic blues/punk howl of The Gun Club, the dark, experimental DIYism of early Flying Nun/Xpressway groups Pin Group and Plagal Grind, and a post-punk minimalism that brings to mind early Rough Trade and Factory releases. Dears, The
Missiles (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21ST)
PS, SPAIN The Dears have not gone away and come back, but they have been transformed: by experience, by necessity, by life and its manifold curveballs. And with their new album, MISSILES, they have emerged as elder statesmen of the Canadian indie rock renaissance... Recorded quickly, the album is a feast of stripped-down arrangements and raw emotion served up like a rustic meal, its songs polished but still containing traces of the rough soil from which they were born. The most explicit example is the affecting final track, Saviour, whose vocal track - an original demo take, recorded with a hand-held microphone only moments after the final lyrics were written - remains unadulterated, vulnerable amongst the organ swells and chorus of children's voices. The music is restrained, yet there is an urgency to the lyrics. Lightburn is the confessor: first decoding, then submitting. Yanchak, whose striking voice is more present than on past albums, is the protector: nurturing and unbreakable.

Liver! Lung! FR! (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21ST)

The stripped-down instrumentation brings singer Scott Hutchison's vocal delivery - now wrenching, now soaring - to the fore, showcasing the emotive lyrics and memorable melodies that have earned the band their passionate following.

Giffoni, Carlos
Adult Life (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21st)
PS, US This is shining and pure electronic music. Adult Life continues Carlos Giffoni's work in slow-building drones and prickly, trebly peaks, but he also imbues these new compositions with subtle structure and blind-siding rhythmic pulses which recall the many pioneers of electronic composition, among them Cluster, Brian Eno, Kraftwerk, and Tangerine Dream. The caustic melding of foreboding abstraction and lively pulse raises Adult Life to a paradigm of the breathing and the immaculate, a strange set of dichotomies finding a shocking common ground. Carlos Giffoni describes this as some of his most musical work to date, a pure electronic excursion into more grounded troupes which almost paradoxically work out completely new sonic concepts and ideas. Original Illustrations for this full length by Megan Ellis.

Girl Talk
Feed The Animals (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21ST)
PS, US Pittsburgh artist Gregg Gillis (a.k.a. Girl Talk) has scrupulously created music from samples for over eight years. His fourth album on the Illegal Art label, Feed the Animals, continues his sonic evolution towards his party-infested live show and steps even closer towards a creation that is centered on pop musicality rather than attention-deficit sample splicing. Girl Talk has been known to underground audiences for several years, but it wasn't until 2006 that Gillis crossed over and caught the attention of a larger audience. With Rolling Stone, SPIN, Blender, Pitchfork, and even Beck including Night Ripper in their "best albums of 2006" lists, Girl Talk has gone on to be booked by major festivals (Coachella, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Virgin, All Points West, Pitchfork, DEMF, etc.), and solicited for remixes (Beck, Thrill Jockey, Tokyo Police Club, Grizzly Bear, Simian Mobile Disco, Peter Bjorn & John, TeddyBears, and Of Montreal). And with roughly 200 live shows over the last couple of years, Gillis has consistently played larger venues to capacity crowds (every date on his 2007 North American tour with Dan Deacon sold out). PRESS QUOTES: "One endlessly entertaining mega mash-up" - Rolling Stone "Gillis' craft is stunning and his tastes are exquisitely diverse" - Blender "A masterpiece that employs an estimated 300 samples" - SPIN "Massively recommended ... the voracious music fan's dream" --- Pitchfork "Media assassins Illegal Art come forth with yet another brilliant Girl Talk record." - XLR8R "Sounds like your favorite mash-up DJ after about 11 espressos" - Entertainment Weekly "Mashes together booty-shaking rap, iconic indie rock, and, uh, ABBA" - MTV.com.

Hyvonen, Frida
Silence Is Wild (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 4TH)
PS, US Having come out of a year of isolation, Frida Hyvönen paired up once again with Swedish producer Jari Haapalainen in Stockholm's famous Atlantis studio and made her second full-length Silence Is Wild. Whereas Hyvönen's 2006 debut Until Death Comes was lean and percussive with her distinctive oompah-styled piano and direct lyrics, Silence Is Wild stretches her voice across lush arrangements of piano, strings, choirs, and synths. Piano-based antecedents and contemporaries such as Carole King, Jerry Lee Lewis, Plush, and Antony and the Johnsons generally feel like appropriate touchstones for discussing the Swedish singer-songwriter's recorded work. Lyrically, however, Hyvönen is in more open waters, as she forges her own stylistic path as a songwriter. On Silence is Wild, Hyvönen continues to take an utterly modern approach to classic songwriting forms: blending the confessional with the fictional; mixing wit with a sexuality that shifts from the refined to the raw; all the while using language which dances effortlessly between the timeless and the contemporary, referencing high art and pop culture in a transcendent manner which masterfully puts Hyvönen at the top of a new international class of singer-songwriters.

International Jetsetters
Heart Is Black EP (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21ST)
PS, US "Honey-dipped 60's melodies drenched in oceanic swells of guitar noise..." - Oxford Bands, UK International Jetsetters is an Oxford based five piece. The band was formed in March 2007 by singer and guitarist Mark Crozer (The Jesus And Mary Chain) and bass player Bert Audubert. The line-up also features drummer Loz Colbert (The Jesus And Mary Chain, Ride), lead guitarist Paul Crozer, and vocalist Fi McFall. The Jetsetters have been best described by the British press (Nightshift Magazine) as "an amalgamation of everything that was great about indie rock, when that term actually meant something. From the narcotic fuzz of Spacemen 3 to the insistent jangle and drone of The Wedding Present, and lifted spaceward by singer Fi McFall's ethereal vocals, they're dark and dreamy but they rock like bastards." "Heart Is Black" is International Jetsetters debut six-song release. The EP blasts into the stratosphere with the full throttle, melodic guitar buzz, of "Inside Out" followed swiftly by the rhythm heavy groove of "Inside Yourself". "Never Slows Down" and "My Redemption" showcase Fi McFall's range as a singer. The low, breathy tones of the opening verses gradually ascend to pulsating choruses where she resonates like a siren. The title track "Heart is Black" strums and thumps with a dark atmospheric burn. The disc closes with a bit of a twist - A glaring early version of "Never Slows Down". International Jetsetters "Heart Is Black" CDEP hits quick and begs for repeated listens. It's a nice glimpse into what's in store from Oxford, UK's latest export.

Judys, The
Moo [re-issue] (DELAYED, PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE 2008)
PS, US The original 'Moo' album finally re-issued on CD for the first time! CD sports seven bonus tracks, mainman David Bean's "Modomusic" EP. Released almost four years to the day after Washarama and following an eighteen month hiatus, The Judy's Moo album has a slightly more progressive sound: richer production values, fuller arrangements and thicker harmonies. As the band returned to the stage in 1985, this was the album that showed the band's maturity and development as songwriters and musicians. The twelve songs on Moo, laced with solid-state irony, well-placed cynicism and standard issue Judys' wit, show the band at the peak of their creativity and acted as a springboard for their live extravaganzas. The album was released with The Moo Tour - a month of live performances across the state which included giant cereal boxes, moving conveyer belts of milk cartons, and a dancing cow while the band donned milkman uniforms. Critically acclaimed and fan-revered, The Moo Album continues to be a milestone in Texas pop music.

Kemialliset Ystavat/Sunroof
Split Series #19 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21ST)
PS, US Kemialliset Ystävät (it translates as 'chemical friends') are a loose collective from Tampere in southern Finland. Existing in dialogue amongst (and beyond) the hugely creative, diverse microcosm of the Finnish scene including artists like Avarus, Lau Nau, Es, Paavoharju, Islaja, Anaksimandros, and labels like Fonal, 247 Laatijaa, and Lal Lal Lal, Kemialliset Ystävät has become an influential node on the outsider noise/folk/ psych underground, finding international acclaim. Almost entirely self-taught and using a bewildering array of instruments and approaches, their sonic arsenal includes detuned guitars, bass, traditional / vernacular instrumentation (mandolins, balalaikas, etc.) hand percussion, all manner of electronic instruments, effects, toys and circuit-bent items, treated samples and vinyl manipulation. Playfully taking their own unique and unpredictable path, they have layered and fused together traditional Finnish (at times almost medieval-sounding) instrumentation and melodies with avant-garde electronics, psychedelic folk/rock, noise, electro-acoustic, and percussive tribal rhythms, creating a sense of ritualistic magic and flexible, group-mind improvisation, with the whole often subjected to brutal and precise editing.

Lake
Oh, The Places We'll Go (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21ST)
PS, US "Oh, the places we'll go! Oh, we don't actually know!" The title track lyrics, with a nod to Dr. Seuss, have a wide-eyed, wondrous feeling, (and a hint of agnosticism) which finds itself popping up throughout the record. On their first K release, LAKE crafts up-beat, dance-able, psychedelic, uniquely sincere and unaffected pop songs, ranging from the jubilant, echoey, post-soul groove of Heaven to the sweet, polyrhythmic Green Arrows-inspired Bad Dream. Recorded at home, largely on cassette 8-track, this album, actually LAKE's third, has a slightly lo-fi, homemade feel as well showing evidence of their influence from prolific artists Karl Blau and R. Stevie Moore. Oh, the Places We'll Go represents a new direction for LAKE - more synthesizers, more up-beat, rhythmically-based songwriting - but it is also in keeping with their aesthetic, with contributing horn players and percussionists, male and female singers, group harmonies, sweet melodies and homespun production. LAKE's core membership is Ashley Eriksson, Eli Moore, Lindsay Schief, Andrew Dorsett, and Markly Morrison, a group of long-time friends based in Olympia, WA. The members of the band came from Washington, the Los Angeles area, and the Midwest but soon found themselves drawn together in the inspiring forests of the Pacific Northwest, and thus LAKE was born. Each is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist in their own right, and contributing melodies and complementing one another's strong points has become the process for LAKE's intimately nurtured songwriting.

Legends, The
Seconds Away (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 4TH)
PS, US After two years of absence The Legends return with the noisiest pop single to ever come out of Sweden. "Seconds away" balances perfectly between the unbearable and pure loveliness. "I need noise now, so this new single sounds like someone drilling a whole in your head. In a pleasant way that is. It's called "Seconds away" and is about the wonders of Tryptizol. The B-side, "Over and over" is actually one of those sad love songs I had promised myself never to write again. But it was out of my hands; life forced me to write it. Sorry about that... Pallers has done a truly wonderful remix of it. It might actually beat the original, which is both a very good thing and slightly depressing at the same time." Johan [aka The Legends]. The one-man band The Legends has confused, and annoyed, it's surroundings with a total lack of will to compromise and sudden changes in musical direction since 2003. Right now Johan is in the famous Summersound studios together with a large number of distortion pedals and broken amplifiers to record a fourth The Legends album. The Legends made their debut with the critically acclaimed album "Up against the Legends" in the fall of 2003. Live the band was somewhere between 8-10 people of which two had a slight idea about how to play their instrument and none was close to sober. -" I wanted to make pop melodies so simple and obvious that they could get to the audience no matter how the songs were played. This time the audience will, hopefully, rather fight to hear the melodies through a wall of feedback".

Lineland
Logos For Love (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21ST)
PS, US For a split second the actuality of language stood only to bear witness and inspire the sonic structures of love being erected around me, and in this moment I believed in principle of purpose. Only when English was interjected did I sense the imposing future and separate out the soundscape of this melodic passing clan from the music streaming through the speakers. Logos for Love presenting a variety of acoustic instrumentation pressed into each other with modern blips and squiggles like a structure of so much brightly colored modeling clay with an illuminated jeweled interior, embracing the ancient rhythms and language over the impeding future. Malcolm Felder creates streamlined, discretely layered electronic music informed by a taste for left-field pop ranging from Bruce Haack to Bollywood, Hüsker Dü to George Jones. After moving to Queens in 1998, he began composing as Lineland, borrowing the name of a one-dimensional realm described in Flatland, the Victorian sci-fi novel by Edwin A. Abbott. Initial fourtrack Casio recordings grew into the album Pavilion (Audio Dregs 2003) over a three-year period, during which Felder expanded the material using music software on the home-built Dynavox 2000 computer and a growing array of vintage keyboards and novelty instruments. Songs have appeared on a few compilations and in several short independent films, including Back and Forthby James and Jeff Israel.

Lorna
Writing Down Things To Say (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 11TH)
PS, US Signposts: Mojave 3, American Analog Set, Coastal, The Blue Nile. WORDS ON MUSIC is proud to present WRITING DOWN THINGS TO SAY, the third album by Nottingham, England's orchestral pop songsmiths LORNA. The quartet follow up their highly acclaimed 2005 record STATIC PATTERNS AND SOUVENIRS with another rare work that eschews convenient classification - embracing an expansive sonic palette without sounding eclectic (in no small part due to the dozens of instruments the band is able to skillfully perform and weave into the record's nine compositions). LORNA tours folk, old-time country, chamber pop, post-rock, and even avant-lounge on WRITNG DOWN THINGS TO SAY. But the genius of LORNA lies in the masterful (husband and wife) songwriting team of Mark Rolfe and Sharon Cohen-Rolfe. The duo have created an album unified in theme and texture by seamlessly cross-pollinating their songs with traces of all these musical genres - deftly bringing pedal steel, string quartets, harmonicas, vintage keyboards, and woodwind and brass arrangements into the fold - not to mention their sumptuous vocal harmonies. "Not In My Lighthouse" bustles with a warm bed of keyboards, on top of which Rolfe's gentle vocals casually flirt with alternating clarinet and flute melodies. This patient courtship builds to yield a wistfulness and exquisiteness once realized by Scotland's romantic perfectionists THE BLUE NILE. On "Think (Let Tomorrow Bee)" Sharon Cohen-Rolfe's voice is undressed to its poignant core - sheltered only by occasional strings and sparse acoustic guitar. The song is a stark interpretation of the 1993 SEBADOH composition - much in the way Ivo's THIS MORTAL COIL project breathed a fresh new atmosphere into the music of TIM BUCKLEY and ROY HARPER. "(I Wish I Knew) How to Build a House" employs a 7/8 meter to daringly bridge the intersection of post-rock and avant-lounge - perhaps having a conversation with AMERICAN ANALOG SET and STEREOLAB along the way. WRITING DOWN THINGS TO SAY is a record that rewards multiple listens, as the sundry instruments that are subtly and cleverly woven into the rich fabric of LORNA's songwriting surface and bloom.

Lucksmiths, The
First Frost (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 4TH)
PS, US Over the course of fifteen years and almost as many albums and international tours, Australian band The Lucksmiths have penned some of the most adored songs this side of the pop underground and have built up a massive fanbase of both Europeans and ex-pats in the process. Their last album Warmer Corners, received much praise (Pitchfork : idiosyncratic but accessible, literate but unpretentious, gentle but not weak, sincere not so much in presentation as in presence) Loud & Quiet named it their 2nd favourite album of the year, Two singles lifted from the album A Hiccup in Your Happiness and The Chapter in Your Life Entitled San Francisco both received heavy rotation on the nations broadcasters, the latter also finding its way onto Qantas in-flight playlist for March 2006 an achievement not celebrated lightly by a band with an enduring penchant for the somewhat ridiculous and irrelevant. A trip to Tasmania has yielded First Frost Their finest and most eclectic album to date. Camped out in the wilderness, the band was free to explore and expand the musical palette, and with all 4 members contributing songs, the end result is a 14-song offering bound to surprise anyone who thought they had The Lucksmiths pegged as sounding too much like The Lucksmiths

M83
Digital Shades Vol. 1 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 28TH)
PS, UK Digital Shades Vol. 1 is the precursor to the fourth album from M83, essentially the brainchild of Anthony Gonzalez, a resident of Antibes, France. Just after the Before the Dawn Heals Us US tour, Anthony decided to develop a musical direction already heard on some earlier M83 tracks and he started to write and record a collection of ambient works. Having long been a Krautrock and Eno fan this was a kind of music that Anthony has always been familiar with. Recorded primarily at his home studio with the assistance of Antoine Gaillet, who had previously worked on Before the Dawn Heals Us, Anthony was able to work without pressure, knowing he could work on the record at his own time and pace. The idea of digital, relevant during all the process (from creating the music to sharing it), gave him the idea to call the project Digital Shades Vol.1, and to make the album part of an ongoing series.

Machine Fabriek & Stephen Vitiello
Box Music (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 10TH)
PS, US Rutger and Stephen sort of accidentally met through e-mail. A simple note regarding an ordering question for a CD led to an enthusiastic e-mail conversation and climaxed in a musical collaboration. This all happened in a very short period, both musicians being very inspired by the concept of "exchange," as a means to cross space and time -- Rutger living in the Netherlands and Stephen in Virginia. Most of the time, when (electronic) musicians work together it's a matter of swapping digital files. In this case they decided to do something different and sent each other a box full of (mostly non-musical, or musically non-functional) objects and recordings, with the "assignment" to make music with those objects and all as source materials. As the titles tell, we're talking about an egg cutter, thumb piano, a broken kraakle box, rice, chocolate sprinkles, old cassette tapes, a broken 7" record, etcetera, etcetera. Both musicians made two of their own solo tracks with the box they received, and the last track was done together by Rutger adding sounds and processing to a piece started by Stephen. For Rutger/ Machinefabriek this is part of his most delicate work. For Stephen, it was a new and extremely enjoyable form of long-distance collaboration. Machinefabriek: Rutger Zuydervelt, better known as Machinefabriek, lives in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Started as Machinefabriek in 2004, he released 40+ small run home-made cdr's as well as work for Type Records, Lampse, Digitalis, Staalplaat (Mort Aux Vaches) and now 12K. A double remix cd was released in 2007, with interpetations by Alva Noto, Pita, Mitchell Akiyama, Xela, Gert-Jan Prins and many more. Collaborations (live or recording) include Steinbrüchel, Jasper TX, Wouter van Veldhoven, Simon Nabatov, Frans de Waard, Aaron Martin and Peter Broderick. Stephen Vitiello: Stephen Vitiello is a sound and media artist based in Richmond, VA. CD releases include Bright and Dusty Things (New Albion), Listening to Donald Judd (Sub Rosa) and Untitled/Exchange, a collaborative CD with Michael J. Schumacher (A Question of Re-Entry). Solo exhibitions of Vitiello's sound installations, photographs and drawings have been presented at The Project, NY, Museum 52, London, the Texas Gallery, Houston, TX and Diapason, NYC. Group exhibitions include the 2002 Whitney Biennial and the 2006 Biennial of Sydney. Over the last 18 years, Stephen has collaborated with numerous musicians and artists including Scanner, Pauline Oliveros, Andrew Deutsch, Julie Mehretu and Tony Oursler.

Manual
Confluence (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 28TH)
PS, US Confluence is Danish producer Jonas Munk's third installment in his series of ambient albums, following the much loved The North Shore from 2003 and Bajamar from 2006. Unlike Munk's better known work, which centers around electronica and shoegazing aesthetics as well as a love of 1980s production techniques, these ambient works are completely without beats, or even time signatures, and are delicately constructed out of slowly evolving streams of guitar that has been processed into oblivion and back. But even compared to the standard set by the two aforementioned albums, Confluence is surprisingly dark and minimalist. These eight new compositions move slowly and seamlessly, like the ebb and flow of the
changing tide, with subtle layering and filtering providing the essential means of movement.

Melodium
Cerebro Spin (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21ST)
PS, US Melodium speaks; there starts a romantically slow game of pong between the hemispheres of brain. The sound speeds. I listen, and there is harmony now between the players, and reluctance towards competition. They play on. Melodically Melodium speaks. Faster, onward towards the polyrhythmic rally! All praise repetitive motion, be stilling thus Zen. The tones of play fashion an energetic path, a melodic relation of right and left. Only when Melodium pauses for a breath do I remember moments can be filled with splitting silence; that I am here and this is somewhere other then the pong game of my mind. Keep speaking. Melodium is the moniker of Laurent Girard, a rather prolific electronic musician from Nantes, France with an obsession for melodies. Weaving bits of guitar, piano, synthesizer, flute or bits of voice and texture to create patterns in sound and small personal soundtracks that are at once somber, while retaining a feeling of sunny optimism. Golden waves of sound with rough-hewn edges that sound both dreamy and melancholic and simultaneously warm and shiny.

Scales (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 10TH)
PS, US Like a would-be soundtrack to some forgotten Wagnerian saga, this debut full-length unleases sonic elements akin to trudging minions in an epic struggle for tonal supremacy. New Order
Low Life [expanded re-issue] (ON SALE / PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 11TH)
PS, US Digitally remastered and expanded two CD edition of this 1985 album, includes eight non-album singles, B-sides and remixes. With LOW-LIFE, New Order truly hit their stride with their highly individual combination of infectious rhythms, inventive composition and performances full of conviction. The vulnerable lyrics and earnest delivery of Bernard Sumner are in top form; his voice is at last a completely developed instrument, clear and comfortable as it wraps itself around such memorable tracks as the opening "Love Vigilantes", a solid, purely guitar-driven narrative. Following immediately and in sharp contrast is LOW LIFE's biggest success, "The Perfect Kiss", a sequencer-fueled dance classic which boasts what is undoubtedly pop music's only frog sample solo. "Sunrise" has an epic feel, filled with driving leads and Sumner's signature scratchy, frenetic rhythm playing. The album takes a serene turn on "Elegia", a beautiful, airy composition of echoey guitar lines and swirling synth textures.

Power, Curruption & Lies [expanded re-issue] (ON SALE / PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 11TH)

New Order found its voice on the group's sophomore effort, POWER, CORRUPTION & LIES (1983). Featuring the original eight songs on the British release, the first disc offers exceptional dance-pop with "Your Silent Face" and "Age Of Consent." The bonus disc includes "Blue Monday" and its b-side "The Beach," which were released exclusively as a single in the U.K., but included on the U.S. version of Power, Corruption & Lies. New Order
Brotherhood [expanded re-issue] (ON SALE / PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 11TH)
PS, US Digitally remastered and expanded two CD edition of this 1986 album, includes eight non-album singles, B-sides and remixes. BROTHERHOOD is a document of growth for New Order's ever-expanding sonic landscape. Packaged in the stark, utilitarian style that was the Factory label's trademark, the album belies its minimalist presentation with a sprawling, intricately crafted collection of pop gems, inspiringly diverse, yet uniformly infused with the band's trademark sincerity and off-kilter melodic sense. The album opens with the deceptively straight drum hits of "Paradise", which quickly adopts an intense double-tracked vocal and with it, an air of danger that offsets its soaring melody. New Order developed into masters of intellectually stimulating dance music, an elusive combination of qualities. The album's biggest hit "Bizarre Love Triangle" exemplifies this rare mixture--atop a throbbing, heavily sequenced dance beat is played out a drama complete with consistently engaging musical shifts, dramatic lyrical turns, and a chorus that's instantly memorable and nothing short of gorgeous. The wistful vulnerability of "All Day Long" dissolves into a sprawling, regal affair and the supremely sweet "Every Little Counts" show yet another dimension to New Order's sonic richness.

New Order
Movement [expanded re-issue] (ON SALE / PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 11TH)
PS, US Digitally remastered and expanded two CD edition of this 1981 album, includes 10 non-album singles, B-sides and remixes, including their debut singles/EP. After the tragic suicide of Joy Division's Ian Curtis, the band restructured. Guitarist Bernard Sumner, whose gift for combining the melodic with the hypnotic had been the band's cornerstone, stepped up to the microphone. The resulting debut MOVEMENT finds the group taking a brave step away from its unfortunate past. Preserved are Joy Division's dark edges--Sumner's guitar attack swerves deftly between funereal repetition and noisy bursts, while bassist Peter Hook continues to explore his instrument's upper registers. From the slow, deliberate build and melodic interplay of its opening moment, the mid-tempo "Dreams never End", MOVEMENT boldly states the band's more experimental, slightly less emotionally turgid agenda. That Sumner is trapped under the influence of Curtis is undeniable--at times, the resemblance is alarming, but MOVEMENT is the sound of Sumner finding his voice. The spacey synth-pop of "The Him" foreshadows the sound New Order was to slowly develop, as Sumner became more comfortable with the upper reaches of his vocal range. Dynamic play abounds--the existentialist drone of "Truth" gives way to a crushing, chaotic guitar wail, while the intense, revealingly named "Doubts Even Here" slowly erupts beneath a disturbing double-vocal, stressing the burgeoning diversity of this legendary band in the making.

Book of Norma (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 11TH)
PS, US Swedish shoegaze/dreamrock duo Norma's new album is due in November. Those of you who snapped up their incredible debut EP understand what's at stake here. Check out the new video for the first single "Waste": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xc_-9IBiPZs

Norma's music is a mixture of ambient, kraut, noise, electronica, indie often with a strict, repetitive bass/drum pattern and a magnificent, wide and almost hypnotic sound. This is rich, panoramic music with a warmth that you don't hear often from other bands trying to do something in this genre. German kraut is one obvious thing, but also the spacerock of Spiritualized and Spacemen3 comes to mind. Modern references may be Silverbullit, 120 Days, Serena Maneesh and the Lionheart Brothers.

Demon producer Jari Haapalainen (Bear Quartet guitarist and producer for Ed Harcourt, Concretes and Camera Obscura) produced and played the drums, and the twin sisters Johanna and Miriam E. Berhan from Taxi Taxi! sang the backing-vocals. Parks, Cale
Sparklace (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 4TH)
PS, US A little over a year since the release of Aloha and White Williams drummer Cale Parks' solo debut album Illuminated Manuscript comes Sparklace. There is a stark contrast between the two albums. Sparklace stands as a more immediate album than its predecessor focusing on songs with a pop structure whereas Parks' previous output was more ambient and minimalisitc. Recorded in his home, every sound is
original. If there is a drum sample, it is from Parks' drum set. The vibraphone is sampled as well. To say Parks has found his voice, is to miss the point. Rather, the sound of Sparklace is singular and electronic with born digital sounds. There is no wasted space, not a snare out of place. Listen carefully as it settles in, fragile but not without momentum.

Receivers (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21ST)

On eight epic tracks, Receivers showcases the band's catchiest and darkest moods to date, reveling in a growing dynamic sensibility only hinted at in their previous work. Though they've maintained their love affair with glitchy oscillations and anthemic vocals, they are now utilizing the full possibilities of a band that was once a scrappy punk trio, and now a mature art-rock quartet. It's is a heady mix of psych, noise, and pop influenced by the arty minimalism of Wire, the surreal pop of early Eno, and even the spaced out psychedelia of Dark Side-era Pink Floyd.

Piano Magic
Dark Horses (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 28th)
PS, UK Their music has run the gauntlet between electronica, post-rock, baroque, modern classical and even glitch, though in recent years Piano Magic has settled on a unique, romantic, classic British alternative rock that echoes the most vibrant work of their prime inspirations. 'Dark Horses,' the latest in their now annual 4-track EP transmissions, nods, consciously or otherwise, to the likes of Joy Division, The Smiths and The Chameleons, whilst managing to sound indisputably like Piano Magic. These songs are built on pummeled drums, chainsaw guitars, cathedral reverbs, insistent bass and Glen Johnson's reliably Morrissey-esque observations on a life less sweet. 'Dark Horses' is Piano Magic's first record for the exceptional independent, Make Mine Music. The label is exclusively financed and maintained by its bands and therefore, the proceeds of each record sold go immediately back to those who made the music. Despite operating almost entirely beneath the radar in their native UK, since their first release back in 1996, Piano Magic have managed to successfully carve out a niche of their own that constantly defies expectation and sidesteps music industry convention. By never staying long on any one label, playing most of their concerts abroad and consistently redefining their sound, the band has not only survived against all odds but built up a solid, devout worldwide fan base. Their 12 long players and 18 other format releases have featured collaborations with Vasti Bunyan, Low, Tarwater, Hefner and Cornershop, amongst others. They've sound-tracked a film by Spanish director, Bigas Luna, signed on and off with the likes of 4AD, Darla, Morr Music, Important Records, toured in Russia, Poland, Turkey, Greece, Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Belgium and England. Even so, Piano Magic remains, unashamedly, a "cult phenomena," not destined for recognition until perhaps a decade after they finally call in the ghost. When not fronting Piano Magic, Glen Johnson operates as Textile Ranch - his new long-player, a collaboration with Victorian music machinist, Plinth - is out this month (also on Make Mine Music). Johnson's alternate project of electro-pop, under the name Future Conditional released a splendid album, 'We Don't Just Disappear,' on LTM last year.

Pit Er Pat
High Time (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21ST)
PS, US PIT ER PAT's recorded output has no easily definable style. It instead represents their evolution as modern musicians, whose affinity for pop & melody is filtered through their desire to have a truly singular voice. Modern Music if you will. Their musical focus remains firmly grounded in rhythm, while incorporating a strong sense of melody & harmony to dance above the complex rhythms & to stretch the layers to new heights. Here they employed a variety of new instruments incl. electric kalimba, horns, bobo balaphone, Burmese temple gongs, agogo bells, timbale, congas, bongos, bells, chimes, etc - more normally used in traditional & spiritual music. These tools helped the band escape into new experiments - be they mystical or introspective explorations of the terrible joy of existence. The gentle & driving grooves are irresistable as delicate layers reveal w/ every listen. CD comes in a deluxe old-style tip-on gatefold mini-LP jacket.

Plagenhoef, Scott and Ryan Schreiber
The Pitchfork 500: Our Guide to the Greatest Songs from Punk to the Present (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 11TH)
PS, US In The Pitchfork 500: Our Guide to the Greatest Songs from Punk to the Present, by Scott Plagenhoef and Ryan Schreiber. Pitchfork offers up their take on the 500 best songs of the past three decades. Focusing on indie rock (Arcade Fire, The Shins), hip hop (Public Enemy, Jay-Z), electronic (Daft Punk, Boards of Canada), pop (Madonna, Justin Timberlake), metal (Metallica, Boris), and experimental underground music (Suicide, Boredoms), it features all-new essays and reviews written with the sharp wit and insight for which the site is known. Kicking it off in 1977 with the birth of punk and independent music, The Pitchfork 500 runs chronologically, with each chapter representing a distinct period and offering a narrative of how the musical landscape of the day influenced its artists. The book opens with David Bowie, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Kraftwerk, and Brian Eno, the "art-rock godfathers" who set the tone and tenor for the next thirty years, and wraps up in the present, when bands connect with new audiences through social networking sites and prime-time TV placements -- and when a single mp3 can turn a niche indie artist into a global sensation. Sidebars like "Yacht Rock," "Runaway Trainwrecks," "Nanofads," and "Career Killers" call out some far-from-classic musical trends and identify the guiltiest offenders. Softcover, 224 pages.

Plinth/Textile Ranch
The Rest, I Leave To The Poor (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21ST)
PS, UK A postal collaboration between Plinth (Mike Tanner) and Textile Ranch (Glen Johnson of Piano Magic). This 44 minute piece may structurally resemble a classical composition - divided as it is into several interlocking stanzas - but it's difficult to place it comfortably within the realm of modern music. If anything, 'The Rest....' evokes the otherworldly, fantastical obsessions of the Victorians (Conan Doyle, Lear, Grandville, Wellcome, etc) through means of meticulously manipulated instrumentation, samples and voice. Plinth, of course, is no stranger to Victoriana. In 2007, the Dorset based multi-instrumentalist and founder of the Dorset Paeans record label released, 'Plays Victorian Machine Music' - an EP made up entirely from sounds generated by antiquated parlor machines and music boxes.

Pop Levi
Never Never Love (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 26TH)
PS, US 2008 sophomore album from this Pop (no pun intended) singer/songwriter and former Ladytron member, probably the only contemporary musician in the world beloved of both Jarvis Cocker and Noel Gallagher. Recorded entirely in Hollywood at Quincy Jones' old studio, Westlake, where both Thriller & Off The Wall were laid down, Mr. Levi has returned with an album about the madness of love - 100% autobiographical, 100% clever, 100% dumb, 100% unique. And that's giving 400% already. From transitional rockers like 'Wannamama' and 'Oh God,' Pop spreads his wings, relying on a production flare, which makes the record feel fresh and slick as well as charmingly hi-lo-fi. 'Never Never Love' shows that while he hasn't abandoned the dynamics of the Rock group he has also been steeping himself in contemporary R&B. Flamboyant, utterly self-confident, completely his own man and so uninterested in the back and forth of fashion that everything he makes is an instant classic, Pop Levi is in the building. Bow down and give thanks.

Schaeffer, Janek
Extended Play [Triptych for the child survivors of war and conflict] (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 10TH)
PS, US LIMITED EDITION 600. LINE is proud to release the latest audio work from British composer and installation artist Janek Schaefer based on his installation of the same title. Installation Reviews: "a piece to return to again and again... haunting and lulling" [The Wire, UK] "so inspirational, and in many ways very spiritual" [Gerry Turvey] "I was so deeply touched by your piece" [Mandeep Kaur Samra] Red is the colour of Life, of Death, and of Love. Scarlett, my first child, was born in 2005, and since then I have
been very aware of how lucky we all are. have been constantly comparing this to the fact that my mother was born in Warsaw in 1942 - the epicenter of World War II. How opposite can two beginnings be? This inspired me to produce the Extended Play installation, which continuously and positively celebrates hope and new beginnings, for child survivors in all situations around the world. The original idea for the composition came from learning about the 'Jodoform' system of secret musical messages that were broadcast by the BBC Service, during music they played was given a particular meaning, which was interpreted by Polish Underground. Discovered from the original Jodoform logbook, that the lovely Polish folk song 'Tango Lyczakowskie', was broadcast on the day my mother was born. Song describes how children in 1918, had been forced to take up arms, in defense of their town. From this tune, chose a short rising musical phrase, and with my arranger Michael Jennings, developed a ten-minute score. Each of the three solo parts was then recorded separately, edited, and cut onto vinyl. In the gallery, 3 x Cello EP's, 3 x Piano EP's, and 3 x Violin EP's are played at either 33, 45, or 78rpm using nine retro record players. These play continuously, and each was modified to stop playing briefly in response to the audience moving around the exhibition. This has the effect of changing and extending the composition, so that it is never the same again.

School of Seven Bells
Alpinisms (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 28TH)
PS, US Alpinism is an electronically enhanced pop record of dizzying highs & claustrophobic lows, whose painstaking conception shows in its detail-laden crevices. On the album's best tracks-the polyrhythmic dream-pop of "Face to Face in High Places," the nervous shimmer of "My Cabal," the menacing lilt of "Iamundernodisguise"-Curtis constructs layers of shoegazing, moire-patterned guitars, while Alejandra & Claudia Deheza intertwine their near-identical voices like the fingers of praying hands. Throughout, the whole heavenly affair is tethered to the ground with a glitchy, tribal thwomp. Technology collides with cryptic religious imagery and good, old-fashioned rock music.

Mantra (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 28TH)
PS, UK 'Mantra' is the 5th and long awaited new album from Slipstream and follows their much loved and critically acclaimed, 'Transcendental', release of 2003. With new track 'Psycho Paul' having already featured in the soundtrack of hit BBC3 comedy series, 'Ideal' (screened in April/May 2008). Written by Slipstream as homage to their favorite comedy show, the show's writer and big Slipstream fan, Graham Duff, loved the song so much that he actually wrote a scene to fit the track, much to the bands delight and amazement! This same scene became a trailer for the show and has since seen some 11000 plus hits on You Tube!

Bog (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 28TH)
PS, US This hones the ritual clatter of their first album, 2005's The Creep, into a more cumbersome affair, ever heading downwards into the Northern Underworld upon slurries of unsignposted mung. Core duo Holy McGrail & Howard Marsden once again create a lumpy bed of bass-heavy synthesizer & guitar drones while Arch-drude Julian Cope provides a coda to the proceedings w/the recital of his poem Land, written especially for this album.

Spacemen 3
DJ Tones (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21st)
PS, UK Spacemen 3 have a limited edition (2000 copies) 5 track mini-album released by Space Age Recordings in cardboard sleeve wallet on October 20th which features 2 previously unreleased Spacemen 3 tracks, a radically different mix of the classic Spacemen 3 cover of the Red Krayola's 'Transparent Radiation' and appearing for the first time on CD, the ultra rare remix of 'I Love You' (originally only 50 promo white label vinyl copies were ever pressed). Rounding off this mini-album is a studio version of Ecstasy Symphony. Track listing: These Blues Transparent Radiation (violin mix) Modulated Tones I Love You (remix) Ecstasy Symphony Spacemen 3 consisted of the core duo of Jason Pierce (Spiritualized) and Sonic Boom a.k.a Peter Kember (Spectrum & E.A.R.) who formed the group in Rugby , Warwickshire, having met at art college. Other members of what would become a fluid lineup over the years included Pete Bain (Bassman, also of The Darkside), Natty Brooker, Sterling Roswell (Rosco), Will Carruthers, Jonny Mattock (Slipstream), and for the final few shows, Mark Refoy (also of Slipstream). From the outset Spacemen 3 had a very defined set of aesthetic principles. They based almost their entire sound on their own concept of minimalism - droning guitars, feedback, as few chords as possible, pounding drums - with their motto 'Taking drugs to make music to take drugs to'. Their minimalism bled into their stage show as well. Sitting down to play their guitars and covered in the spinning colours of a cheap psychedelic light show, their stage 'act' was very anti-performance. Another striking aspect of Spacemen 3 was their willingness to cover and share their influences. Song titles, lyrics and interviews were peppered with references to bands and artists they believed shared their 'minimal is maximal' aesthetic. The Velvet Underground, the Rolling Stones, the Stooges, the MC5, early Captain Beefheart, free jazz musician Sun Ra, the Silver Apples, 1960s garage punk such as the 13th Floor Elevators, Red Krayola, the Electric Prunes, the Beach Boys, Jan and Dean and other surf bands, 1980s rockabilly groups the Cramps, the Gun Club, Tav Falco, blues and gospel acts like Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, the Staple Singers and John Lee Hooker, and the production techniques of Joe Meek, Brian Wilson and Delia Derbyshire were just some of the names mentioned by the band.

Spectrum & Silver Apples
A Lake of Teardrops [re-issue] (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21st)
PS, UK Pete Kember a.k.a. Sonic Boom of Spectrum worked with the seminal 60's act Silver Apples on a six track mini album originally released by Space Age Recordings in 1998. Having been out of print for many years now a limited re-pressing of 500 copies will be available from 20th October to meet demand for this release. From the opening surging waves of 'Streams Of Sorrow' with its controlled chaos and intoxicating vocals, through 'The Edge's' mesmerizing monotone backing to Simeon's 90's beat poetry - like Allen Ginsberg reincarnated into his most abstract nightmare, 'Whirlwind' with its plaintive vocals and warped ambience held together by a trademark Sonic Boom drone pattern, to '(I Don't Care if You) Never Come Back's' almost industrial-tribal percussion, fleshed out by those unique Silver Apples oscillations and Spectrum's ever present sense of wayward genius. 'A Lake Of Teardrops' is a spellbinding trip into the minds of two of the finest experimental composers ever.

PS, SWEDEN Incredible new album, Pitchfork approved. If you thought the EP was great, just wait until this arrives. Folk album of the year? Price to be confirmed, it might be better, it won't be worse. PITCHFORK: "While it's understandable to be skeptical of another skinny dude with a mustache, a guitar, and a worn-out copy of The Anthology of American Folk Music, the more time you invest in Shallow Graves, the more you'll realize how unusually memorable it is. Ultimately, Shallow Graves transcends comparison-- which is saying an awful lot, given the popularity of its prototype-- and Matsson is a natural-born folksinger, earnest, clever, and comforting."

Transmission
Sublimity (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21st)
PS, UK This is one amazing ride from a four-headed creative monster on heat that manages to blend musical beauty, torrential passion and sheer malevolence, sometimes in the space of one track...First sound on opening track Albion is Youth's unmistakable heaving bass before Big Paul Ferguson steams in with the heaviest drums in the business. Once the original Killing Joke rhythm section is underway on a crunching post-punk funk vamp, Simon Tong's guitar appears in shrapnel clusters lashed by Tim Bran's unearthly synth. Musical fireworks might be expected from a line-up like this and Sublimity, the second album by Transmission, doesn't disappoint. The pedigree is impeccable: Youth's production credentials, his time with Paul in the Joke before ahead-of-its-time super funk ensemble Brilliant. Simon's stint in the Verve line-up which made Urban Hymns then Gorillaz and Damon Albarn and Paul Simenon's The Good, The Bad & The Queen. Dreadzone co-founder Tim Bran plays with Subsonar and The Orb. The group started gestating after Youth and Simon became friends during the Urban Hymns sessions, which the former co-produced. Tim entered the fray then, Paul in Spring 2005 after he met Youth at a Malicious Damage party and heard some demos. Three months later they recorded debut album Beyond Light in three days at London's legendary Olympic studios.

Eccentric Soul: The Young Disciples (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21ST)
PS, US By 1967, East St. Louis, Illinois, once dubbed an "All American" city by the US Chamber Of Commerce, had become St. Louis, Missouri's evil twin. Unemployment, drug addiction & vicious gang activity put a dark & heavy lid on a bi-state area that once cooked-up world-changing talent by the likes
of Chuck Berry, Josephine Baker & Miles Davis. But both cities still spawned heroes, and ALLEN MERRY was one of them. Already a living legend for his early work w/ Ray Charles & Ike Turner, Merry channeled his talent into teaching, forming the YOUNG DISCIPLES through the South End Community Center to keep
kids off the streets, out of the gangs & into the studio, where young men & women spiraling downward could ride the spiral groove upward on Merry's own YODI, GATEWAY & MERRY labels. W/ nearly 80 local youths involved from both sides of the Mississippi, the YOUNG DISCIPLES (named after one of the area's most notorious gangs) encompassed solo acts, duos, male & female vocal groups, a massive horn section & a troupe of African dancers. Every sweat-drenched recording incl. here emerged from this grass-roots organization that changed, if not saved, lives. LP forthcoming

Week That Was, The
S-T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 26TH)
PS, US 2008 debut album from the British Electro Pop outfit, chiefly Field Music dude David Brewis' big brother, and featuring contributions from Field Music colleagues. Musically the record is an expansive tribute, paying direct (and indirect) homage to the wildly ambitious Linn Drum and Fairlight experiments of Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, and Tin Drum-era Japan. Fused with typically detailed arrangements and a sense of drama, this makes The Week That Was a brain-shattering, 32-minute epic, straying far outside the conventions of most indie-guitar music.

White Hinterland
Luniculaire (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 21ST)
PS, US Luniculaire. It sounds French, but it is in fact a word invented byWhite Hinterland, taking parts of French words "lunaire" (lunar) and "funiculaire" (funicular, as in railway) to form the title of their second release. This EP is a highly ambitious recording containing five songs all sung in French, and it expands upon the wide palette of musical ideas heard onWhite Hinterland's debut, Phylactery Factory. Featuring two original songs, plus covers of songs made famous by Serge Gainsbourg, Brigitte Fontaine and Françoise Hardy,White Hinterland feels right at home amid the musical tradition laid out by these legends. From the opening groove of "Requiem Pour Un Con," it is obvious thatWhite Hinterland is exploring a plethora of musical ideas on Luniculaire. The funky rhythms and scorching guitar of the Gainsbourg classic captures the spirit of the original, but it's Casey Dienel's vocals that make this so special. Hearing Dienel sing in French is a revelation - without the distraction of English words you hear what a powerful instrument her voice is.White Hinterland's "Chant de Grillon" explores a wider range of sonic textures, many created by the layered guitar work of Alexis Gideon, while the spooky and atmospheric "Mon Ami La Rose" (originally made popular by Hardy) is subtle and beautiful. The original version of "J'ai 26 Ans" was performed by Brigitte Fontaine with the Art Ensemble of Chicago, and here Dienel plays the role of Fontaine while her band toys with flourishes of African rhythms and Eastern drones. Throughout Luniculaire, and especially on "J'ai 26 Ans" and "Requiem Pour Un Con,"Matt Meyer's percussion work is sublime - he layers an array of strange sounds and noises, while maintaining the heavy groove throughout. The EP's closer, "Lunirascible" has Dienel's voice at the center, and like Julie Tippetts, Elizabeth Fraser or contemporary ScottWalker, Dienel
offers vocals meant not to deliver words, but simply tones, melody and texture. Like some groovy, strange and psychedelic artifact clamored about by crate-digging record collectors, Luniculaire is more than just an EP. It is a testament toWhite Hinterland's deep musical vision and a taste of the greatness to come.

Wrangler/Scanner
1968 Moog Modular PICTURE DISC (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 28TH)
PS, UK Limited to 300. Two Ra Chord blasts of 'Switched on Bach' beauty performed by WRANGLER and SCANNER who first met whilst fighting over a copy of 'Switched on Paddy Kingsland' at a record fair. These Supraphon pyjama wearing artisans have by loving of various knobs and switches, the sweet caressing of sequencers and event generators and manipulation of patch cords, created the sounds and rhythms for a discerning ear. Whilst Benge / Winters and Scanner have avoided the trap of being academic beard noodlers with this release, they have invoked the spirit of John Baker, White Noise and of course Bob Moog. Featuring sounds made exclusively on the Moog Modular System 3C and the Formant Modular Synthesiser this seven inch is a radiophonic joy, working as a platter to play out as well as a companion piece to their Twenty Systems meisterwork. Fans of Delia Derbyshire, Daphne Oram, Wendy Carlos, Brian Eno or the recent John Baker Tapes are recommended to check this.
