A Place To Bury Strangers
S-T
PS, US A Place To Bury Strangers have often been called "the
loudest band in New York". This may very well be the case, but
unlike much so-called "loud" rock and roll that's out there,
APTBS is not loud simply for the sake of it. The sonically overdriven
sound they've accomplished is no clumsy accident, but a carefully
cultivated and well-maintained entity all its own, fostered by an
unbridled passion that's clearly evident in every live show they play
and each recording they make. A Place To Bury Strangers does not so
much play songs as allow them to pour out. They are songs about longing,
heartbreak and confusion played extremely well and at a passionately
loud volume. While there are obvious reference points: Pornography-era
Cure, early Ride, My Bloody Valentine, and pre-1990s Jesus and Mary
Chain, the sound is all their own, in part due to singer/guitarist
Oliver Ackermann's day job of building custom guitar pedals (see deathbyaudio.net).
Coupled with the solid bass of Jono Mofo and the relentless drumming
of Jay Space, the APTBS team is a force to reckon with.

Anemones
Come Down Like A Cloud
PS, US Grounded and propelled by the boom and tick of a lazy yet indefatigable
old-school drum machine, albeit augmented by occasional percussive
crash, rattle and stick of a genuinely human kind, ANEMONES are all
deep throb, jangled buzz, ambient drone, shiftless mumbling and, perhaps
most importantly, rolling waves of reverberation so pronounced and
significant as to be structurally necessary. Collected and combined,
these elements make a warm, oceanic, somewhat totalizing music that
operates inwardly, directed towards the uniquely fertile, semi-liquid
quasi-agriculture of the mind. Activated this way, mind as such is
here suspended, ala Descartes, as a kind epiphenomenal hazy feeling,
a ghost between the ears. Both in and out of the body, this half-consciousness
invokes a persistent, low-key dream-like psychedelic break in which
the normal world itself becomes hypnotically elusive and mysterious,
a pleasantly dislocating transformation enhanced by Anemones' minimalist,
somewhat lock-groove languorousness and nonchalantly sardonic theatricality.
But although often performatively 'druggy' in character, Anemones'
music isn't therefore 'about drugs' in the sense of being 'about being
made by means of drugs' or even 'about being made for or on behalf
of drugs', as if simply copying such important stylistic and conceptual
precursors as the Velvet Underground, Suicide, Spacemen 3 and the
Jesus and Mary Chain. Rather, Anemones produce a kind of 'post drug'
music, which here refers to a state of 'after-ness' and not prudish
abstention or dumbbell reform. In fact this is a specific aesthetic
strategy: after the drugs and drinks are long done and gone, sound
itself remains the psychotropic trigger par excellence. Hence, altering
perception, Anemones aim to turn listeners on ears first.

PS, US Hailing from Los Angeles, California, DOUGLAS ARMOUR is our

"Prince of Wands" and "Away." "Prince of

that, when associates of the label began DJing the track. It is a
damn near perfect pop song that has had people jumping up to the dance
floor upon first hearing.. Moving in a different direction with the
kind of indie pop reverie that hasn't been heard for a long time.

Art In Manila
Set The Woods On Fire
PS, US After Azure Ray disbanded, member Orenda Fink put her energies
into a solo record in 2005, called "Invisible Ones". Upon
touring in support of that album with various revolving band members,
she chose the cream of the crop and formed a new group called Art
Belle, then changed it to Art In Manila (a nod to radio host Art Bell's
exodus to the Phillipines). On this release, the band flirts playfully
with genre wanderlust without ever abandoning cohesion. Moody slow-burners
follow four-to-the-floor rockers that butt up against serene ballads.
A powerful debut.

Ash
Intergalactic Sonic 7"s [expanded singles collection]
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "While the last two LPs have been pretty
damn great, Ash has often seemed like a punky 2000s version of a '60s
pop group, where each song takes over your radio for weeks. One sugar-rush
melody melts into another wall-of-guitar burner with Tim Wheeler's
"infectious" happy-go-lucky vocals, and you wonder why they
never had a singles LP collection before this! Really, if Northern
Ireland-bred and London-based Ash is like a lesser cross between the
Buzzcocks' big power and their Ulster forebears the Undertones' "chocolate
and girls" sunny disposition, then who put out better singles
LPs way back when than those two bands? ...Anyone still undecided
or unenlightened about this delightful quartet is well served by this
consistent 19-song, big-hook collection... And if all that isn't enough,
there's a bonus disc of 22 B-sides going back a decade, including
some highly unusual picks for covers. This serves the fans and newcomers
equally..." (Jack Rabid)

It's a remix album including many older songs like 'Zalig Zijn de

Welk Een Vreugde' and 'Ik Weet'. These 15 songs in total haven been
remixed and restructured. Seriously, almost everything has been cut
to pieces and folded back into a new and beautiful masterpiece! From
heavenly piano pieces by Sylvain Chauveau and ambient soundscapes
by Donato Wharton to heavy beats by Solex and weird electronica by
Hood, simply a must have for every ATCOED fan and electronic music
fan. The remixes have been done by Hood, Styrofoam, Spinvis, Solex,

Beatles, The
1967-1970
PS, US Picking up where 1962-1966 left off, the double-album compilation
1967-1970, commonly called The Blue Album, covers the Beatles' later
records, from Sgt. Pepper through Let It Be. Like The Red Album, The
Blue Album contains a mixture of hits, including singles like "Lady
Madonna," "Hey Jude," and "Revolution" that
were never included on an LP, plus important album tracks like "Lucy
in the Sky With Diamonds," "A Day in the Life," "While
My Guitar Gently Weeps," and "Come Together." Like
its predecessor, 1967-1970 misses several great songs, but the compilation
nevertheless does capture the essence of the Beatles' later recordings.

Beatles, The
1962-1966
PS, US Assembling a compilation of the Beatles is a difficult task,
not only because they had an enormous number of hits, but also because
singles didn't tell the full story; many of their album tracks were
as important as the singles, if not more so. The double-album 1962-1966,
commonly called The Red Album, does the job surprisingly well, hitting
most of the group's major early hits and adding important album tracks
like "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away," "Drive My
Car," "Norwegian Wood," and "In My Life."
Naturally, there are many great songs missing from the 26-track 1962-1966,
and perhaps it would have made more sense to include the Revolver
cuts on its companion volume, 1967-1970, yet The Red Album captures
the essence of the Beatles' pre-Sgt. Pepper records. ~ Stephen Thomas

Big Star
Columbia: Live at Missouri University
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "With the Posies' Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow
standing in, on Stephens' recommendation, for the uninterested Hummel
and the deceased Bell, the foursome run through a collection mostly
drawn from #1 Record and Radio City. Chilton's in good voice throughout,
the blend of sweetness and melancholia of the band's original days
present and fine as ever... Everyone else gets at least one vocal
turn as well, a nice way of signaling the group effort that went into
the show. Stephens handles "Way Out West" and "For
You," Auer sings Bell's solo single "I Am the Cosmos,"
while Stringfellow takes over on no less than three songs, "Back
of a Car," "Daisy Glaze," and a smashing rip on "Feel."
A few interesting surprises are thrown in along the way, though anyone
familiar with Chilton's way around unexpected covers in performance
won't be too taken off guard. T. Rex's "Baby Strange" gets
a straightforward take, glam sass fully intact and suiting the band
perfectly, while Todd Rundgren's "Slut" closes out the set
with a final appropriate blast... (Ned Raggett)

Connors, Loren
The Hymn of the North Star
PS, US Even before his 1978 debut guitarist LOREN CONNORS has been
continually redefining the American blues and folk guitar. "The
Hymn of the North Star," a 180 GRAM 500 EDITION LP, is the first
full-length vinyl release solely under Connors' name since 1990. Though
in the years since he has recorded over two dozen solo and collaborative
albums with Jim O'Rourke, John Fahey, Alan Licht, Christina Carter,
Jandek, Suzanne Langille, Thurston Moore, Keiji Haino, Darin Gray,
and others. Connors creates a tapestry of transparent and haunting
melodies that transform the Delta blues into a ghost-like apparition
that never settles as it pours from the soul. These six pieces show
Connors contemporary elegiac style at its peak of romantic minimalism.
Self recorded in his Brooklyn apartment "The Hymn of the North
Star" is saturated with subtle details and the barely there multi-tracks
of guitar and bass floating in the background. Guitarist ALAN LICHT
appears on one equally opaque piece recorded in Glasgow, Scotland.

Epic 45
May Your Heart Be The Map
PS, UK It comes as no surprise to find that Epic45 grew up - and still
reside - in a small rural village in the heartland of the English
Midlands. Based around the nucleus of 25 year old school friends Ben
Holton and Rob Glover, Epic45 have had a varied and fluid line-up
since their debut in 1999, releasing a series of highly acclaimed
EPs and albums for labels such as Bearos, Awkward Silence and Where
Are My Records. Inspired by their surroundings, blissful childhood
summers and mysterious / inspiring walks the duo have been making
music for more than a decade. Their latest album May Your Heart be
the Map' sees Epic45 concentrating on a more bucolic sound, mixing
cyclical acoustic guitars, chiming reverbs and field recordings. The
album was originally inspired by 1970s British TV series 'Survivors',
a fictional account of a plague that wipes out most of the worlds
population. The idea of a near-deserted world in which people have
to rebuild their lives amid the ruins of the previous civilization
seemed strangely appealing. However, other themes crept in slowly,
the 'empty world' began to represent our lives now and inevitably
the duo started looking back to childhood and simpler, happier times.
The title is simply a rallying call to like minded people, an expression
of hope in an uncertain world. As with previous releases, May Your
Heart Be The Map features a collaboration with Antony Harding of July
Skies/Avrocar. This time, Harding contributes fragile vocals to the
track 'We Left Our Homes For Winter'. Whilst very unique in style
and approach, the music and ethos of this album may recall the youthfulness
of Leeds band Hood, the experimentalism of that great lost pop band
from the 1990's Disco Inferno, and is likely to delight fans of the
experimental label Type and their artists Helios, Xela and Goldmund.
But no doubt admirers of other classic British bands such as New Order,
The Durutti Column, Felt and The House of Love will also find much
to immerse themselves in and start working their way through Epic
45's enigmatic back catalogue.

Fleeting Joys, The
Despondent Transponder
PS, US Repress. Flavors of My Bloody Valentine, Swervedriver, The
Cocteau Twins and Sonic Youth are there, but don't fully explain this
shimmering anomaly. Their debut album Despondent Transponder was written,
performed, recorded and mixed by the band. Brilliant Californian drummer
Matt McCord lends his skills to the project. After hearing Despondent
Transponder, legendary Swervedriver drummer, Jez, has pegged the duo
for collaboration on their next release. While appreciating the comparisons
to My Bloody Valentine, it has never been the goal of Fleeting Joys
to imitate what they admire. "It is merely a starting point to
expand from, experiment with, and go from there. We simply love the
experience of being drenched in crashing waves of beautifully distorted
chords!" It's from this love that the song-crafting of despondent
transponder answers the pop vs. noise riddle with catchy, at times
- even happy - melodies and crashing instrumentals that rip through
like a cyclone tearing up a trailerpark. "Of recent things to
cross this desk, Fleeting Joys is a real delight. The epiphanic Spectorian
fog works best on "The Breakup," which plays Rorika's gossamer
vocals and symphonic synth lines against John's My Bloody Valentine-style
guitar sturm und drang over a stellar melody. - Jackson Griffith,

Glaxo Babies
The Porlock Factor
PS, UK Glaxo Babies were born out of the thriving Bristol punk scene
in 1977. They enjoyed indie chart success with the 12" EP 'This
Is Your Life' in 1979 and notoriety when its follow up 'Christine
Keeler' was banned by Radio One. John Peel, who offered them sessions
and gigs with his legendary road show, championed the Glaxo Babies.
Sadly though, the band was always too recalcitrant, headstrong and
idealistic for their own good and imploded acrimoniously after barely
18 months together. With a sense of unfinished business, the nucleus
of the original band (Rob Chapman - vocals, Dan Catsis - guitar, Charlie
Llewellin - drums) reformed in 1985. Here are the results, inventive
and melodic psychedelic pop and warped funk that somehow sounds fresher
now than it did in the 1980's.

Groop, The

PS, US Breathtaking vocal harmonies and subtle flourishes of pop-psychedelia
make the Groop's only album a perfect snapshot of the late-'60s Los
Angeles scene. With direct ties to Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66,
as well as cult faves the Millennium and Sagittarius, the Groop's
baroque folk-rock appeared in the soundtrack to 1969 Oscar-winning
film Midnight Cowboy. Embellished with bonus tracks, rare photos and
in-depth interviews with the original band members and producer, this
extraordinary album is finally getting its long overdue re-release.

Heaton, Angie & The Gentle Tamers
The Rumor Mill (ON SALE)
PS, US 'The Rumor Mill' is the new album by Illinois songstress and
Parasol Retail Queen Angie Heaton, former member of The Tractor Kings,
Corndolly and Liquorette. On this, Angie's 4th album, she's joined
by a country band, The Gentle Tamers, including veteran Nashville
session player, Bobby Watson, on guitar, banjo and pedal steel. This
album take Angie's songs and sounds from the rock club to the barn
dance, with her trademark vocal phrasing falling comfortably behind
the beat like Willie Nelson, and a voice that brings to mind Neko
Case, Lucinda Williams, and Kasey Chambers. In 'The Rumor Mill', Angie
gives us 10 more songs about crushes, death, and being crushed to
death; including a Tex-Mex-ed version of the Trembling Blue Stars'
classic "Sometimes I Still Feel The Bruise".

New Astronomy
PS, ITALY This album is dedicated to Giovanni Paneroni, amateur astronomer
and misunderstood genius (earth flat, sun small, etc). "A New
Astronomy" is probably the most eccentric and out-there JG release
to date, the imaginary soundtrack for some of their most bizarre,
vivid dreams - obviously interspersed by the occasional nightmare.
It's made by grainy, hallucinated musical scores trying to depict
the beautiful, the scary, the annoying and the simply absurd inhabiting
dreams. It runs the gamut from ghostly ambient drones to brain-damaged
acoustic sketches, covering everything in between - furious guitar
freak-outs and a hommage to British 60's producer Joe Meek included.

by Sub Pop in 2005 in a 100 copies limited edition).

Jesu/Eluvium
Split
PS, US LIMITED))) For the second installment in the collaborative
series of split albums between TEMPORARY RESIDENCE LTD. and HYDRA
HEAD RECORDS, we find a match made in heaven with the ethereal, grandiose
dirge-pop of JESU splitting sides with stately, deserted majesty of
ELUVIUM. Already fans of each other's music, the two artists sought
to compliment each other and in the process stretched their individual
sounds to their outermost limits. Jesu shoots for the moon with a
trio of fuzzed-out tunes that owes more to first-wave British shoegaze
groups like SWERVEDRIVER and RIDE than Broadrick's own roots in GODFLESH
and NAPALM DEATH. It's a beautiful and brilliant evolution in Jesu's
already accomplished career. Eluvium aims for the heart of the sun
with his magnum opus, a three-part collaboration with JEREMY DEVINE
that stretches Eluvium's contemplative drones to a staggering twenty-one
minutes, in which time the song transforms from a lonely rattle to
a seismic, swirling storm of sound that grinds the piece to haunting
quiet. As with all records in this series, this is Strictly Limited
To 4,000 Copies - 2,000 Hydra Head versions and 2,000 Temporary Residence

Jupiter Apple
Uma Tarde Na Fruteira
PS, SPAIN The musical origins of this Brazilian filmmaker, multi-instrumentalist
and composer take us back to the first half of the 90's, when he spawned
a brief incursion in Dylan-esque territory under the moniker Woody
Apple. He soon came back as Júpiter Maçã, his
current name, with which he develops his personal version of a 60's
inspired psychedelic sound in cult albums that don't cross the Brazilian
borders, but do find an echo among an elite who whisper his name in
each other's ears: among his following we find Tom Zé, Caetano
Veloso, Arnaldo Baptista, Rita Lee, Sean Lennon, Tim
Gane, Sean O'Hagan or Dean Wareham.

Kashiwa, Daisuke
Progam Music 2007-08-24
PS, JAPAN Kashiwa Daisuke's demo sound source received outstanding
response once it was put on air in Ryuichi Sakamoto's radio program.
His later released 1st album shed brilliant light on the world after
electronica and post rock through its beautifully flowing oriental
melody and composition with strong visual elements. A year and a half
since then, Kashiwa has proudly completed his 2nd full album to further
introduce his talents to the world. The album titled "program
music I" is compiled of 2 songs lasting 36 minutes and 27 minutes
each. In the last album, Kashiwa turned his inner images into sound.
This time, he chose 2 stories as a motif and ventured to express that
story through sound. This is not simply a soundtrack that showcases
a story but the story itself is told through music. The first song
"stella" tells the story of the "Night on the Milky
Way Railroad" and the second song "write once, run melos"
is based on the story, "Run Melos!" The all too transparent
scenery of "Night on the Milky Way Railroad" is characterized
by a magical cosmic view engraved by deep thought. "Run Melos!"
portrays speed and the wavering spirit of the characters. This album
dynamically portrays these story characteristics through lyrical melody
and ingenious arrangement. This is a stunning masterwork that speaks
of musician Kashiwa Daisuke's rich creativity and his passion for
creation and proudly exploits the possibilities of musical expression.

Broad in number & armed with ace pop songs, they have the power

aside, Los Campesinos! play superbly crafted indie pop that bounces
off walls like Love Is All, grins with the childlike exuberance of
Bis, and throws the toy chest into its arrangements like Architecture
in Helsinki. Glockenspiels and pizzicato violin veer into reckless
guitar riffs and full-bodied handclaps-- or fizz over, like Mentos
and Coke, into happy-stupid crescendos. Gareth shares lead vocal duties
with the similarly pseudonymous Aleksandra Campesino!, and their boy-girl

Luminous Orange
Sakura Swirl
PS, US The Yokohama-based band Luminous Orange has been around since
1992, and their new album Sakura Swirl is a perfect showcase of the
expertise and talent accrued over the last 15 years. Formed and fronted
by female auteur Rie Takeuchi, LO clearly take great inspiration from
the first wave of UK shoegaze as well as the guitar pop and electronic
music from Cornelius and his contemporaries in the Shibuya-kei movement.
(In fact, Cornelius' Trattoria label released some of Luminous Orange's
first material right before it dissolved in 2002.) But Luminous Orange
are not stuck in recreating the past: they have radically altered
their genetic material to form a brand-new sound. At points, the new
album Sakura Swirl sounds like a respectful tribute to My Bloody Valentine:
airy vocals float above heavily-layered wall-of-sound guitars drenched
in a bog of resonant reverb.

PS, US In "Share This Place: Stories and Observations,"
LORI GOLDSTON and KYLE HANSON of BLACK CAT ORCHESTRA acclaim team
up with K RECORDS recording artist MIRAH to deliver a sweeping song
cycle inspired by the tragic and triumphant lives of insects. Inspired
in part by influential French scientist/poet J.HENRI FABRÉ,
Mirah's lyrics smartly humanize the trials and pleasures of the insect
world, touching on themes of villainy, seduction, self-sacrifice and
love. Shining a light on the epic complexity of the insect world,
the songs imply an inescapable comparison with our own. A concept
album of sorts, "Share This Place" is a score written by

Nadler, Marissa
Song 3: Bird on the Water
PS, US A dark and atmospheric record and Nadler's most personal to
date. Thematically she relates to characters living on the fringes
of society. The songs revolve around the demise of a love relationship
as well as eulogies and dirges. It was inevitable that Marissa would
rise from the underground to reach a wider audience someday. Her music
is dreamy and spectral: an amalgam of traditional folk, paisley underground,
shoegaze, and dream pop. Almost all of the songs are very sad - about
broken hearts, death, or simple burdens. Her voice is what most people
immediately respond to, with the writing and playing yielding a slow
burn subtlety. Excelling at a Fahey-esque finger-picking technique,
she plays homage to some of the great early American blues players.
The Basho like 12 string guitar movements are also quite lovely. MOJO:

tuneful pop with heart and clever lyrics that could be joyfully optimistic,
whimsically satirical, or dourly cynical...such as "Home Counties

dynamite the walls of "Black Sheep Boy's" gothic, moss-walled

with the relics of high culture and the crumpled-up trash of low culture,

Piana
Eternal Castle
PS, JAPAN Piana, whose vocals can be described as adoring and transient,
has already established her name in the ambient music scene worldwide
Artists like The Album Leaf requested her to open for their Japan
tour, and video director, Thomas Hilland, the creator of Norwegian
electro-duo Royksopp's promotional video, was so in love with Piana
that he created her promotional video for free. From compositions
to lyrics, and arrangements to mixing, the "electronica diva"
Piana directs and controls her creativity, and with this new album
she ventured into a new world of collaboration with musicians she
loves and trusts. The digital sound and effect-heavy-feel is kept
to bare minimum, and she has emphasized acoustic tones of cello, violin,
guitar, piano, and organ with her new experiment. Her innocent and
motherly voice became even more powerful and dearly, and the poppy
melody she creates is so timeless. This new album shows her warmth
and her hope for her future, and her strength to jump out of this
world and resonate the bells of eternity.

Prayers
God Save The Prayers
PS, US Comes out swinging like 1st wave NYC punk w/Motown vibe. Guitars,
harmonies, drums & bass surge forward like a big oily rouge wave,
backing up lyrics about trouble & horsin' around in the grand
theater of absurd. Next a sinister track full of damaged characters,
skeezy fashion & denial. Then a girl group pop song done by boys.
An ode to gossipy shit talking w/ reverby 50s guitars. Ending w/a
greaser rumble w/ vertical slashes of guitar & backing vocals
that are pure doo wop.

Project Jenny, Project Jan
XOXOXOXOXO
PS, US Even as our hyper-digital age makes the world smaller, the
soundscape of American music keeps getting bigger. Genres multiply,
divide, revive, and recycle themselves-reinvented as pre-this, post-that,
or this-core, and that-hop. So slap a label on Project Jenny, Project
Jan if you want but you'll find that label is constantly changing.
On XOXOXOXOXO, you'll witness how a young duo from Brooklyn pushes
the boundaries of modern music. The band's signature sound-Sammy Rubin's
jaunty electro-pop hooks fueled by saucy freestyled vocals from Jeremy
Haines-is infectious without being predictable. And on this album,
you will hear shades of every genre, from Latin, old school hip-hop,
and reggae, to blues, rock, old time rags, and 80s electro. Some songs
even brush up charmingly against bluegrass, big band, and swing, resulting
in a sound that is fiercely, uniquely their own. So can you call Project
Jenny, Project Jan post-indie-pop electro-core? Sure, if you insist
on categorizing. The bottom line is that this is smart, energetic
dance music for a new generation of listeners-the kind of people who'd
rather shake it on the dance floor than puzzle over sub-genres.

Rentals, The
Last Little Life EP
PS, US New EP from Matt Sharp (ex-Weezer) and Rachel Haden (ex-That
Dog!), seminal neo-new wave pioneers, The Rentals return revamped
with an equally exhilarating sound for a new decade. New album in
2008. PREFIX MAG: "Okay, so it's only four songs. But The Last
Little Life EP is only one small sign that the Rentals are back in
a big way. The band recently finished up a residency at L.A.'s famed
Spaceland. Now it's in the middle of an extensive tour on which the
members will remind audiences of their band's power-pop greatness.
And don't worry too much about the length-it's but a stopgap before
a full LP, which Matt Sharp and his friends of P hope to have out
by the end of the year."

PS, US Hailing from Southern California, Satisfaction is a four-piece
rock group that backs up their crafty song writing skills with impressive
talent. On this Limited Edition 6-track CD/EP (only 1,000 copies),
you can hear echo's of The Beatles & Harry Nilsson in their songwriting
and their music is chock-full of tasty guitar licks. Some folks have
compared Satisfaction with current acts such as Spoon, The Shins,
Band of Horses and My Morning Jacket. However, here's what Arty Fufkin
from Polymer Records has to say..."Satisfaction reminds me of
the day I was listening to the White Album while drinking Coca-Cola
and eating Pop Rocks candy. Not too good on the stomach, but great
on the ears. One should eat corn-on-the-cob with a glass of milk while
listening to this EP". Pure pop for now people. Sweet!

Records where they released a pair of now highly-prized singles in
1967. Produced by David Rubinson, the trippy, harmony-laced Smokey

Speal, Shane
Stealing the Fire
PS, US It could be a modern incarnation of the old blues scenario:
A man sits in his single-wide mobile home with a primitive guitar
& belts out mean murder ballads & dark spirituals through
a rusty harmonica mic. But it's not a "scenario." This is
the real shit. Speal was living in the middle of a Pennsylvania trailer
park. He plays a cigar box guitar. And he recorded this album on a
simple 4-track cassette recorder. "Stealing the Fire" features
stark homemade recordings of Speal performing the works of Timothy
Renner on a primitive cigar box guitar. It was a simple premis in
the beginning. Speal just wanted to know what Renner's dark folk music
would sound like if were soaked in Delta blues. Speal covers Renner's
work from Stone Breath, Spectral Light & Moonshine Firefly Jamboree
& solo recordings.

Spokane
Little Hours (LP/CD)
PS, US "Little Hours" is the patient sheen of stillness
after a short, violent burst of intention. The lingering, resonant
decay of a nail being hammered into wood. A piano laden marriage of
small hopes and quiet violence. In Church Hill, a borough of Richmond,
Virginia, there is a small yellow cottage. Next to the cottage is
an austere replica of a mid-nineteenth century, white Federal period
house. The members of SPOKANE hand built the structure over the course
of 2006 while recording and revising their first new album in four
years, "Little Hours." The record is both a document of
and an aural parallel to that difficult, meticulous process. In the
emotional vein of folk singer Jackson C. Frank with the textural emaciation
of composers Zbigniew Preisner and Morton Feldman, the songs themselves
are hinged on concepts of failure and stillborn ideas, on the conflicted
process of building or birthing a cerebral image into the world. There
are the echoes of insistent cats running through the skeletal frame
of the house, pillaged, infant birds in their mouths, left half-dead
at the foot of the hole where the stair would be. "Little Hours"
is packaged in A VINYL SLEEVE WITH BOTH RECORD AND CD INSIDE, 50 of
which are handmade and numbered. It features the core ensemble of
2003's "Measurement," which MOJO magazine called "a
uniquely enthralling treasure", along with contributions from
members of Brooklyn's orchestral, minimalist band GREGOR SAMSA.

Ghetto Beats on the Surface of the Sun
PS, US Immediately following the release of their acclaimed 2004 album,
"We Move Through Weather," TARENTEL built on their forward
momentum by recording another several hours worth of material, its
fate to be determined at a later date. Tarentel don't follow up their
albums so much as follow through them. To that end, "Ghetto Beats
On The Surface Of The Sun" is more of an exploded view of the
world the band has built and un-built for over a decade, each track
acting as a map to an increasingly cosmic landscape. Originally released
as a limited edition series of vinyl albums, "Ghetto Beats"
is collected here onto two CDs - a full two and a half hours of music.
It is a sun-baked cluster of ragged rhythms, splintered sound and
scorched shimmer. The production is a caustic mix of hi- and lo-fi,
creating a strange sense of timelessness, like discovering a black
and white photograph of the future. AVAILABLE IN A NUMBERED, LIMITED
EDITION QUADRUPLE GATEFOLD JACKET, "Ghetto Beats On The Surface
Of The Sun" is a widescreen projection of unspeakable charm and
unlikely beauty.

Garage Beat '66, Vol. 6: Speak of the Devil
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "This installment features a heavy dose
of sneering, attitude-laden garage gems recorded between 1965 and
1967, including the William Penn Fyve's wry "Swami" (the
organ player from the band, Gregg Rolie, went on to greater fame with
Santana and then later still with Journey), Neal Ford & the Fanatics'
"Good Men (Are Hard to Find)," the Road Runners' "Goodbye"
(this one could have easily been a big pop hit in a world with a fair
and equitable music distribution system) and a spirited version of
Bo Diddley's "Who Do You Love" by the Druids of Stonehenge.
Nothing here would have toppled the Beatles or the Rolling Stones
back in the day, but now, some forty years on, these tracks still
sound wonderfully snotty and free of annoying finesse. What a time

Le Niveau de la Mer
PS, US "Le Niveau de la Mer" and "Bete a Cheval"
are two songs inspired by American imperialism, but that could also
speak of many different places around the world. "Le Niveau de
la Mer" was written shortly after the passage of Hurricane Katrina
and took shape while I imagined the scene. I read somewhere that with
global warming, we would be facing this kind of storm more and more
often and it terrified me. It seemed to me as though people here preferred
not having to change anything about their lifestyles, even though
we have no other option left. "Bête à Cheval"
is a song that is slightly comical which tells the story of the passing
of a violent scape-goat who stomps on everything along its way. Played
on the drums by HEATHER DUNN (DUB NARCOTIC SOUND SYSTEM), and yelled
by the voice, the effect is similar to a very small punch in the face.
Both songs were recorded in the big room at DUB NARCOTIC STUDIO by
CALVIN JOHNSON in Olympia in January 2006.

2080/Sunrise
PS, US 2080/Sunrise is the single for the forthcoming YEASAYER full-length
debut, due out the fall of 2007. Soothsayers, crystal-gazers, and
time travelersŠthey have all seen the future. Spilling words
of Armageddon, the apocalypse, and the second coming of Christ they
speak of man's impending doom. With countries on the warpath and our
decaying world growing inhabitable it is easy to succumb to the voices
of these scholars. YEASAYER have also been witness to the future.
"2080/Sunrise" documents their visions and experiences in
the years that lie ahead. Discern what you will from the lyrics, but
YEASAYER'S songs flow with posi-vibes that will make you dance and
trumpet. It is optimism, it is joy. "It's a new year, I'm glad

surely be dead, so don't look ahead, never look ahead."

You Say Party! We Say Die!
Lose All Time
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Providing more of the same as their
debut album in the best possible sense, Lose All Time cements British
Columbia's You Say Party! We Say Die! as one of the most consistently
enjoyable acts of the neo-new wave, even despite their terrible name.
With their combination of Becky Ninkovic's yowling, bratty lead vocals
and Krista Loewen's unapologetically cheesy keyboards, the majority
of Lose All Time passes by in a blur of thumping dance-rock tunes
highly indebted to the twin towers of the Athens, GA, new wave set,
Pylon and the B-52's. However, the haunting piano-and-voice ballad
"You're Almost There" provides an effective breather amidst
all the nervy dancefloor fillers, and the closing "Quiet World"
has a hypnotic pulse akin to the best work of the often underrated
Martha & the Muffins. A more consistent and thoughtful release
than 2006's Hit the Floor!, which got over in part because of the
band's infectious sense of fun and enthusiasm, Lose All Time is a
genuinely terrific album showing that You Say Party! We Say Die! may
be one of the few bands in the retro-new wave scene with the talent
to last beyond their pop cultural moment." (Stewart Mason)

Zucchini Drive
Goodyear Television Playhouse
PS, JAPAN Zucchini Drive are an eclectic electric vocal duo. What
started out as a side project developed quickly into a full-time occupation.
Marcus Graap (Stacs of stamina) and Tom De Geeter (Cavemen speak)
both kept their influences, being the acoustic lo-fi sound of Cavemen
Speak on the one hand and the electronica bounce rhythms of Stacs
of stamina on the other. For this album Tom & Marcus could count
on an impressive list of producers and guest musicians. Styrofoam,
Populous and B.fleishmann from the Morr Music Label, as well as Anticon's
finest Alias. On vocals we could find the undisputed Markus Acher
(the Notwist), the sharp MC-duo Grand Buffet and fast rapper Bleubird.
Italian indie heroes Giardini di Miro added a warm dimension to some
tracks. Zucchini Drive was always honoured to play with different
artists. The collaborations were as plentiful as they were diverse,
showing that Zucchini Drive do not fear to cross borders. Musical
wizards as Kaeoflux (6 productions), Radical Face (2songs) or musical
collaborators and friends as Mich from Hitch (be), Pol from Galatasaray
(be) and last but not least Nomad (be). Goodyear Television Playhouse
