Traffics + Discoveries
PS, US A broad spectrum of sound washes over you during
the entirety of the album. There is never a dull moment,
as each track takes on a separate dynamic realm & the
songs themselves change shape, eliciting a stimulating
listening experience. The 'dark' half features a sample
from A.M. radio over a miasmic drone & gurgle, while
the 'light' half sends us East with a chant heard at a
temple in Taipei. It's a very delicate track, where the
sound is sometimes reduced to a murmur.

Besties, The
Singer
PS, US Dagger Zine (US): Top 10 CDs for January, 2006.
Skipping Stones Records released a few bands, including
the Charade from Sweden (with members from the Shermans
and Happydeadmen) and the Besties from Brooklyn, New York.
'Singer' is the first album by the trio, and it's really
good to hear a band that plays happy and melodic indiepop
the way it's supposed to ound....this is the best album
so far this year. Intro (Germany): Not only does the album
title show a charming simplicity, also the tracklisting
reads wonderfully friendly: "Prison Song," "Western
Song" or "Pirate Song" will free you from
winter depression and post-holiday lethargy. They tell
of forbidden love, outer-space fantasies and zombie lovers
("Zombie Song"). Sugar-sweet pop melodies with
keyboard-sounds accompany the distant connection in the
high north ("Sweden Song"). Marisa, Kelly and
Rikky bring new brightness into your hut. One calls it
indiepop, another "A New Generation of Twee Pop," and
even another will stick them in the Antifolk drawer with
bands like Pantsuit. The Besties themselves call their
melodies simply punkrock. Whatever, so long as you shake
to their music, wiggle your bottom stylishly in the square
indie disco or pogo in the scruffy youth-center: in any
case you should not let yourself miss out on the two gals
and the young man. Common Paper (Sweden): There's an echo
of an All Girl Summer Fun band and somewhere in the genes
there's of course Talulah Gosh. Somewhere in the second
song there are hints of new stuff. The keyboards and the
drum machine make the difference. There are "rock
fills" intros and exciting synth sounds. The guitar
feels fresh too cause there's more than the standard jangle.
The Besties are bouncing their way through and if I'd have
a chewing gum I would be chewing it on the beat. Cameron
Deyhle (US): "The Besties are in the business of serving
up sunshine infused twee laden milkshakes." Thee Power
of Twee (Sweden): "keyboardpop with a quitar and lovely
female vocals. Bubblegumpop twee, I love it."

Broken Family Band, The
Balls
PS, UK BALLS is the third full-length album from The Broken
Family Band. They've got a good reputation for peddling
jangly country music, but BALLS shows there's more to them
than that. Since forming in Cambridge in 2001 they've chucked
out 3 full-length
records, 2 mini-albums, played more shows than some professional
touring bands (all over the UK, Germany, Texas, Scandinavia
etc), been all over the radio signed their publishing to
Mute Song AND they've still got proper jobs, girlfriends
and lives... BALLS shows off The Broken Family Band's love
of indie rock, heavy metal, country-flavoured ballads,
punk and arty pop meanderings, without the slightest thought
for fashion or trends. Guests this time are limited to
Kansas pop princess Piney Gir on vocals, with Goldrush's
Joe Bennett and The Folk Orchestra's Gill Sandell chipping
in here and there. Recroded Brian O'Shaughnessy (Primal
Scream, My Bloody Valentine, Beth Orton).

Budd, Harold/Elizabeth Fraser/Robin Guthrie/Simon Raymonde
The Moon And The Melodies
PS, US An absolute essential classic. Harold Budd and The
Cocteau Twins. Everyone's favorite romantic bedtime album.
Marry the langorous refrains of Harold Budd with the piquant
etherealism of the Cocteau Twins and you have a union made
in heaven. THE MOON & THE MELODIES is a perfectly apropos
title for the eight fragile sound-poems which decorate
the digital code in this recording. Budd's fragmentary
piano notes glisten like dewdrops on the morning lawn during "Memory
Gongs," while Liz Frasier's mellifluous voice cascades
over the frozen drum patterns and processed guitar opalescence
of "Sea, Swallow Me." What Budd brings to these
proceedings is an air of classical sophistication that
reigns in any more mainstream aspirations. These beautifully
serene mood pieces run the gamut from introspection ("Why
Do You Love Me?") to probing pop-form curiosity ("Eyes
Are Mosaics").

Casiotone For The Painfully Alone
Young Shields
PS, US Owen Ashworth finally jettisons the confines of
lo-fi minimalism for an expanded production palette. A
bite sized intro to his
new CFTPA made in conjunction w/ Jherek Bischoff (DEAD
SCIENCE, DEGENERATE ART ENSEMBLE. A driving, menacing anthem
with its cold synths, frantic drum machines, & pulsing
bass undermined by Ashworth's signature monotone, it is
a brilliantly bitter narrative that stands as the most
confident & sinister track in the Casiotone songbook.
The single's b-side is an electro reworking of of Prince's "When
You Were Mine," which features guest vocals from XIU
XIU's Caralee McElroy, & somehow manages to sound giddy
and gloomy at the same time. CD also features 2 beautifully
retrofitted CFTPA classics from their sold out Alphabet
Series 7": "Roberta C" appears here as a
huge, swooning epic with a full string arrangement and
a ridiculous, floor-killing beat, and "The Subway
Home" has been reworked as a darkly beautiful dirge
which pairs Ashworth's raspy baritone with Bischoff's skeletal
contrabass arrangement.

Songs For A Barbed Wire Fence
PS, GERMANY Full-length debut record by the Leeds, England-based
one-man-band Chris Hooson. BBM Review: "Trying to
pigeonhole them is not easy. You can tick off vague soundalikes
but not influences. You can namecheck the two Nicks, Cave
and Drake, elements of a resurgent Mercury Rev, a bit of
Sparklehorse and Tindersticks, you could even lump them
in with the current alt-country rise. Nothing, though,
quite hits the mark."

Dead Can Dance
Self-Titled
PS, US An essential classic. The band's first record. The
band's sound here is much more clearly based in the "contemporary" --
Dead Can Dance uses traditional song structures, the group's
instrumentation is almost entirely guitar, drums, synthesizer,
and co-vocalist Lisa Gerrard's voice ethereal, other-worldly
voice. Perhaps the most surprising single song on the album
is "East of Eden." Built on a picked (and heavily
echoed) guitar line and a rolling drum pattern, it is probably
the only track in the DCD catalogue that can be described
as relentlessly rock. Standouts include "The Fatal
Impact," which boasts a crystal-clear guitar sound,
a scaling base line, and tribal chanting; "Wild in
the Woods," which is underscored by a threatening,
droning guitar; and "Musica Eternal," a subtle
track that clearly indicates the path that the band would
eventually follow.

Encre
Encre à Kora
PS, US French artist Yann Tambour. While his dark and haunting
albums on the celebrated French label Clapping Music have
earned him enormous praise in Europe (including praise
in such French taste-making magazines as les Inrockuptibles,
Mouvement, and Chronicart), his mark is just beginning
to be made in North America. The three track EP is Tambour's
first appearance on intr.version. Departing from his previous
body of work which sets fiercely whispered text againt
skittish, frantic orchestral backdrops, it puts the eponymous
Western African instrument at the centre of a seething
mass of guitar, strings, & woodwinds. The most obvious
points of musical overlap might include NY minimalists
(Steve Reich, Terry Riley, Lamonte Young, et al shredded
by microprocessors) or The Books (but with a dark, throbbing,
libidinal energy), but, Encre is in a world all his own.
As with previous releases in intr.version's ep series (Polmo
Polpo, and Vitaminsforyou), Encre à Kora will be
limited to 500 copies, and will be printed on fan CD's,
and packaged with a silkscreened poster & insert.

Allotments
PS, US Fariña's second album with Pickled Egg marks
the latest stage in a musical journey that has lasted nearly
25 years. Since 1981 Mark Brend and Matt Gale have ploughed
a defiantly singular furrow through left-field pop, crafting
irregular releases that only sometimes line up with the
zeitgeist, and then usually by chance. Here, joined by
Cliff Glanfield and Tim Conway relative newcomers with
10 and five years' service respectively they once again
match elegant songcraft with subtle experimentation and
inventive arrangements. With all four members singing,
and between them drawing on an instrumental palette that
includes not only guitar, bass, drums and keyboards, but
more exotic colours like autoharp and flugelhorn, Allotments
is an album of layers and depth.

Fortdax
Divers
PS, US nigh-on three years after 'folly' and at least 18
moons since the john peel session where the ideas were
first aired, Darren Durham returns under the FortDax moniker
with his somewhat-overdue new album. no, he's not entirely
sure where the time went either...what can be said for
certain though is that 'divers' is noticeably different
in tone & hue to its predecessor and assuredly darker,
although its core, as with previous FortDax releases, remains
firmly rooted in melody. 'Folly' went on to be regarded
as an 'ambient' work in certain quarters, but Darren swears
that this was largely due to the low-volume mastering.
suffice it to say that 'Divers' contains less of 'those
vangelis synthesizers' and a sleeve instruction to 'play
much louder'. this time around, there may also be other
musicians involved, an amount of real (read 'physical')
instrumentation, and at least one field recording from
the bronte country valley where he lives & works. as
per 'Folly', the album is dedicated to his dog 'Meg', although
as with his geographical placement, that's not necessarily
significant.

Froese, Jerome
Neptunes
PS, UK After being a key member of the legendary German
cult electronic group, Tangerine Dream, for more than 15
years, Jerome Froese, is finally releasing his first-ever
solo album. "Neptunes" combines all the classic
ingredients he bought to TD's sound with a lot of new and
diverse influences. On "Neptunes", atmospheric
guitar walls meet melodic solos and crystalline acoustic
pickings on a distinctive electronic foundation. While
Froese's first solo output will easily appeal to the fans
of Tangerine Dream, it breaks out of the musical boundaries
that make up their trademark sound to create an open-minded
and eclectic musical journey. A modern and timeless work
of music.

on this collection. Perhaps the reason it became famous
here is that it featured a young Birkin giving the audio
impression that she was having, um, a very good time in
the studio. It was subsequently banned throughout Europe. This

Gillespie, Dana
Foolish Dreams
PS, UK Dana Gillespie was a music lover from an early age: "I
discovered the blues when I went to the American Folk Blues
Festival in 1962 and also to see the Yardbirds at the Marquee
Club. I was in my early teens and hadn't heard anything
like it before". In 1964 she recorded her first single
for Pye, with Donovan on guitar...and became a regular
on the folk circuit along with friends Donovan and David
Bowie. She recalls: "I was doing folk because I couldn't
afford a band and I hadn't found my musical
niche". In those early years Dana got to know many
of the top bands and people in the music business....appearing
on Ready Steady Go and other cool TV shows of the era along
with the legends of the British pop explosion. In 1967,
she made this album, Foolish Seasons, a Psychpop/Swinging
London/Folkrock masterpiece. Featuring the rare Donovan
song, "You Just Gotta Know My Mind," which should
have been a smash mod hit, (and also includes the guitar
of JIMMY PAGE!!!), and two fantastic Billy Nicholls covers
from his much celebrated and legendary Psych/Softpop gem,
'Would You Believe.' Arranged by the great Mike Vickers
and produced by Wayne Bickerton (World of Oz, Jackie Lomax,
Pete Best Four, The Rubettes), this is one of THE great
missing links of 1960s pop....Dana was to make one more
album for Decca, morphing seamlessly into a more blues
based style, before becoming a star of London's West End
theatre: the first run of Jesus Christ Superstar (playing
Mary Magdalene), The Who's "Tommy" (playing the
Acid Queen) and the rock Othello, "Catch My Soul".
She also appeared with Peter Cook, Dudley Moore and Kenneth
Willams in the film "The Hound Of The Baskervilles" and
starred in Ken Russell's "Mahler". A number of
roles in latter-day Hammer films and more experimental
art house movies are also fondly remembered. As a singer
she moved to RCA Records and made WEREN'T BORN A MAN and
AIN'T GONNA PLAY NO SECIND FIDDLE, under the aegis of David
Bowie, whose management, Mainman, also took care of her
career. A period in the US was spectacularly ended when
Bob Dylan invited her to appear on his 1997 UK tour...
Dana continues recording successfully today, specializing
in her first love, emotionally expressive blues music....this
sumptuous reissue of her classic first album is LONG overdue!!
First time on CD ever in the world.

The Damage Suite
PS, GERMANY Höst is Al DeLoner (main songwriter and
guitarist in Midnight Choir) and Chris Eckman (main songwriter,
singer and guitarist in The Walkabouts). Chris Eckman was
the producer of three Midnight Choir albums and Chris and
Al often discussed the possibility of doing something that
wouldn`t have to involve big budgets and time consuming
schedules. This is the result, released in 2001. All Music
Guide REVIEW: "In this relatively obscure debut, Midnight
Choir's Al DeLoner and mentor/producer Chris Eckman (the
Walkabouts) assembled a fluid orchestral album of accordions,
pianos, clarinets, slide guitars, and long, drawn-out ambient
patterns. It was a simple, sparse mixture with obvious
soundtrack origins, frequently executed with the proper
amount of disturbing subtlety. In "The Big Picture" and "The
Confrontation," the band summoned up the collaborative
textures of Allinson/Brown's AV 1 and Tangerine Dream's
opulent work on Ridley Scott's Legend, but "Washington
Fall" worked on different levels, an equally peaceful
and unsettling experience of touchingly eclectic pastoral
charms."

Jakob
Self-Titled
PS, US At times putting the post- into rock, and at others
kicking the whole bloody fence down, Jakob's lush and textured
take on the guitar/bass/drums format continues to broaden
and enthrall with every performance and release. Their
music is captivating and mesmerizing, the sedate becoming
devastating in the blink of a crowd's collective eye. Echoing
the graduated inclines and unexpected progressions found
in their music and the expansive landscapes of their surroundings,
this Napier three-piece has developedconsistently, if sometimes
unpredictably, since their formation in 1998. Since that
time Jakob have connected listeners the world over with
their cascading crescendos, performing at South By Southwest
2005 (one of the Austin Chronicle's picks of the festival),
Denmark's Forma Nova Festival, and touring the UK and USA
supporting the likes of Mono, Pelican, and The Hidden Hand
along the way. Not that the band hasn't left audiences
around New Zealand enthralled - notable shows around the
country include Big Day Out appearances in consecutive
years, a tour playing with former Can frontman Damo Suzuki,
and poster space shared with the likes of HDU, Meterman,
and Avotor. Ready yourself for the intensity of a live
performance, and be prepared to be absorbed into the delicacy
of their recordings - Jakob traverse an aural wilderness,
a journey on which you must accompany them.

Kind Of Like Spitting
Thrill of the Hunt
PS, US Ben Barnett manages to create some of the most overwhelmingly
powerful songs of love & torture imaginable. He seems
to write songs in the way that one breathes: consistently,
constantly, & as a necessity. Pouring albums from his
mouth, head & hands multiple times a year, each one
as essential & moving as the next. Songs can rotate
between somber, solemn solo pieces & explosive, full-band
rock. Amongst all the styles handled by Kind of Like Spitting,
though, lie a solid punk ethic & the ability for immense
lyrical depth.

Lampshade
Because Trees Can Fly
PS, GERMANY Deep down in the Swedish woods in a small studio
the Danish/Swedish indie band lampshade's debut album came
into existence. Massive and melancholic, sensitive and
intense, beautiful and timid - this is the sound of the
album 'because trees can fly' - the meeting of Rebekkamaria's
fairy-like girlish (Bjorkish, Cocteau Twinsian) voice and
the instrumental universe of soundscapes. An album full
of hope and positivism containing 12 songs that shape a
whole of whispering lyric poetry and beautiful noise. The
tracks are flavoured with trumpet, cello, horn, glockenspiel,
piano and a lot of other musical details. The album is
varied, but it has the deep leitmotif of presence and rebekkamaria's
characteristic voice in the centre.

Les Trolls
Culture de I'incoherence
PS, US A collection of this French collective's best tracks & artwork,
melding experimental breaks with nomadic living, marijuana,
French rap & grafitti. Here's their American debut!
A blend of elements most commonly known in French free-party
circles as hard tek. While hard tek generally refers to
a techno sound punctuated by distorted 909 kicks, they
blend a solid hip hop foundation into the mix, utilizing
Paris MC Abraxas, among others. They also don't shy away
from weaving in live instrumentation & improvisation.

Love Letter Band, The
Fear Not My Brothers, Fear Not My Sisters, For I Have Seen
the...
PS, US The Love Letter Band (AKA Bad Weather California) "Fear
not my brothers, fear not my sisters, for I have seen the
future..." To compartmentalize: This record will play
well on a radio show with The Danielson Family, Joanna
Newsom, Devendra Banhart, Leonard Cohen, Akron Family,
Will Oldham, Neutral Milk Hotel, The microphones, Little
Wings, Feathers etc. If you're going to file it file it
there. But compartmentalizing is hard to do. That's why
one sheets are hard to write! If you haven't heard of The
Love Letter Band you should know this: They are anything
but a band in the traditional sense. The word collective
is thrown around quite liberally these days since the success
that the word had with a certain Elephant 6 in the 90's.
But TLLB is just that: A collective of artists and music
players rotating around the loose nucleus that is songwriter
Chris Adolf. The Love Letter Band has been around: as in
around the country countless times touring the United States,
Canada and Mexico calling broken tour vans and random living
room sofas home. These weary eyed travelers have worked
hard and have made themselves known the old fashioned way.
Since their first tour with Leeds UK's Boyracer to the
epic voyages with K records' Wolf Colonel, Adolf and his
rotating cast of thrift store instrument players have shared
bills with Doug Marsh (Built to Spill), The Microphones,
Mirah, Calvin Johnson, David Dondero, CEX, The Blow...
You get the picture. With "Fear Not My Brothers..." we
are astonished with Adolf's growth as a songwriter and
recording artist. From their 2002 full length ("even
the pretty girls take medicine" (555 records of Leeds
UK)) to this latest anticipated opus "Fear Not My
Brothers..." Adolf has grown from bedroom pop wizard
to polished studio craftsman. Not that this album isn't
lacking the rawness that is TLLB. It is Adolf's honest
lyricism that has established TLLB as a loved member of
the indie folk/pop scene.

Midnight Choir
All Tomorrow's Tears (Best Of) DCD
PS, GERMANY As the band has now broken up 'All Tomorrow's
Tears' is Midnight Choir's way to say farewell. Hand-selected
by the three band-members (Paal Flaata - Atle Byström/Al
De Loner - Ron Olson) the double-disc features 27 tracks
that document the complete 10 years of existence. As usual
there are a few alternative mixes and b-sides to make the
release more interesting for the existing fan. Moreover,
the lavish booklet features all lyrics and recording information
to round up an excellent retrospective of one of the most
painfully beautiful bands on this planet. From their AMG
bio: "A somber European trio who plays a decidedly
American form of rootsy rock, Midnight Choir has steadily
built not only a fervent fan base, but a unique take on
Americana as well." Think Talk Talk, Nick Cave and
Chris Isaak meets Nashville and late night Las Vegas.

Midnight Choir
Unsung Heroine
PS, GERMANY Norwegian trio's most acclaimed full-length
album. From the All Music Guide REVIEW: "DeLoner's
music, again with piano rather than guitar as lead instrument
at most points, continues its mesmerizing, haunted way
through an elegant vision of old Nashville meets a very
late night Las Vegas, all hamhanded clichés boiled
away to result in a teary-eyed but perfectly elegant sorrow.
Where guitar appears more prominently, as with "Snow
in Berlin" or "Painting by Matisse," the
mood remains the same, and deservedly so. Flaata's singing
is all the more his own -- he could easily stand against
many of his role models now, American or European -- his
tone inviting, clear, and warmly human."

Niles, John Jacob
My Precarious Life In The Public Domain
PS, US "Niles was nontraditional, but he sang traditional
songs. A Mephistophelean character out of Carolina, he
hammered away at some harplike instrument and sang in a
bone chilling soprano voice. Niles was eerie and illogical,
terrifically intense and gave you goosebumps." --
BOB DYLAN from CHRONICLES. Doubtless the secret star of
Martin Scorcese's acclaimed TV documentaries on Bob Dylan
was the amazing John Jacob Niles, one of those early 20th
Century figures that, well, really just don't happen anymore....
Musicologist, collector, songwriter, balladeer, John Jacob
Niles was born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1892 into a mysterious,
spooky world of hills and hollers where the eeriest of
folk songs were still alive, and brought their essential
strangeness, unchanged yet subtly garbled since the mountaineers
arrived from Britain, to the modern world and ultimately
to the folk revival of the early 1960s, influencing generations
of folk singers. Niles was singing the likes of "Barbary
Ellen," at children's singing contests as early as
1901, and began collecting Appalachian folk songs and composing
music in earnest as a teenage salesman for Burroughs Adding
Machines. After serving in the new U.S. Air Force in World
War I, the government financed Niles's study of music at
the Universite de Lyon and the Schola Cantorum in Paris,
where he met Gertrude Stein. In the 1920s, John Jacob Niles
published his first song collections, became master of
ceremonies at the Silver Slipper nightclub New York City,
and in 1933, toured the U.S. and Europe with Marion Kerby
to critical acclaim. That same year, he acted as assistant
and guide on Doris Ullman's celebrated photo expeditions
into the fading mountain communities of his home region,
collecting music as he went. Niles was known for his otherworldly
singing and dulcimer playing (he made his own lutes and
Appalachian dulcimers) and specialized in the songs of
the Appalachian Mountain region.

Paal Flaata
Rain
PS, GERMANY The first solo album by the singer of The Midnight
Choir, Paal Flaata, after The MC disbanded. Much has been
written about that voice over the years, but Mojo magazine
put it right very early on: "Vocalist Paal Flaata
has a distinct advantage over his contemporary US heroes
in that, with a voice that makes Scott Walker sound like
Little Jimmy Osmond, he can sing them all into a cocked
Stetson..." That expressive voice was front and center
on five full length albums by highly acclaimed Norwegian
band Midnight Choir. 'Rain' was his second solo release.
This time the songs were almost completely written by Ben
Lorenzten and Christian Nystrom, both in Flaata's band
and present on this recording on acoustic guitar and keyboards. "Bless
Us All" - the only cover version - is culled from
the songbook of Mickey Newbury, one of Paal Flaata's favourite
songwriters. Again Paal's voice is the central element
of the record. But it is being carried by intricate arrangements
that deserve consecutive spins in order to finally unfold
all their beauty. We hear influences Folk and Blue-Eyed-Soul,
of Country and Americana. We hear those beautiful, heart-wrenching
ballads that made Midnight Choir's Amsterdam Stranded such
a masterpiece. But there are also some meaty rock songs,
pushed forward by the wizardry of Lars Havard Haugen, Norway's
best guitar player. But in the end there´s that VOICE.
There´s one quote that has been mentioned numerous
time in rock history, but only rarely did it fit better
than here: "Paal Flaata could sing the phone book
of Moscow and make it sound great!"

PS, SE Debut album from Sweden's The Radio Dept. Brilliant
breathy melodies
and punchy rhythms cascade over a foundation of fuzz and
feedback. Their sound is refreshingly classic, rooted in
c86 and early 90s shoegaze, yet their style is crisp and
modern. "Against The Tide" and "Where Damage
Isn't Already Done" are the perfect meeting of The
Field Mice and early Primal Scream, while "Why Won't

Jesus & Mary Chain. "Strange Things Will Happen" shows
a more dance-y side & features a female lead vocal
reminiscent of Northern

Randomnumber
Golden Acre Sleeps
PS, UK RandomNumber, aka Matt Robson, creates what has
been described as "Northern Wrongbeat", a mesh
of emotive, brooding harmonies drawn and quartered by complex,
beat-heavy rhythms. It's digital music with a human heart
at its centre. More bands live in Leeds LS6 than probably
any other single postcode in the UK, and in the centre
of that you'll find RandomNumber the beating electronic
exception to the hardcore, guitar-fuelled rule. Robson's
hyperactive beat mechanics and alchemical sound manipulations
are bound together with a keen sense of melody shaped by
his many years of playing in the Leeds alternative music
scene, most notably as drummer for Hood (which culminated
with their release 'Home Is Where It Hurts'). With this
background of the band dynamic, Robson has rallied hard
against stereotypical laptop clichés, and imbues
his own shows with a keen sense of energy and punk attitude,
using two unsynchronized laptops and a tabletop of controllers
and effects. Previous RandomNumber releases have turned
up on a plethora of respected indie and electronic labels,
such as Mogwai's Rock Action imprint (an EP which NME named
dance single of the week, back when they did that kind
of thing), Rocket Racer, Fencing Flatworm, and Catmobile
Records. You may also have seen his work on numerous compilations
from the likes of Tigerbeat6, Darla, and 555 Recordings.
He has toured the UK and USA extensively, playing shows
with 65daysofstatic, Kid606, DJ Rupture, Cex and Dntel
amongst others.Early reviews are saying things like "there's
a lot more ambience in there and it's still crunchy in
that Funkstorung way" and "traces of early Autechre
with a large doses of all things shoegazetronic".

Savoy Grand
People And What They Want
PS, GERMANY Nottingham, England-based band with fantastic
slow-mo music a la Codeine, with an appreciation for Slint's
tense minimnalism...also likened to Tindersticks and an
unplugged Godspeed You Black Emperor, oddly enough. The
lo-fi home recording methods and the reduction of Savoy
Grand to a duo had brought a new directness and freedom
to the sound, but this line-up would need expanding to
produce the new full-length. So with the addition of some
of Nottingham's finest musicians, Neil Wells (Escapologists,
Line) on Bass, Neil Johnson (Wolves of Greece, Great Bear)
on Guitar & tape loops, and Mark Simms (Prints, Brown
Owl) on Drums, they entered the studio with "Burn
The Furniture" producer Mark Spivey to record what
would become people and what they want. The 8 tracks on
the "People And What They Want" album include
the majestic "Change Is An Engine" (featuring
Jo Whoodnutt from Seachange on violin) and the stark "Spike".

Garage Punk: Nothin' But Trash
PS, UK Believe it or not the swingin' sixties didn't just
spawn mega-pop groups like the Beatles, Stones and Monkees.
The decade of love also gave birth to something far darker
and dirtier, and arguably much more fun. Yes, the sixties
were also responsible for producing the seeds of what would
eventually become Punk Rock. The legacy of such icons as
The Sonics, The 13th Floor Elevators and The Monks lives
on today, and over the past two decades has produced cult
sensations such as Thee Milkshakes, The Prisoners and Kaisers.
A filthy hybrid of Bad Taste, Rhythm n Blues, rockabilly,
surf sounds and all that is unholy, Trash Punk is one of
the most enduring forces in the rock n roll underground.
This DVD compilation covers nearly twenty years of Garage
Punk and Sixties Style rock, AKA Trash and showcases some
of the legendary characters that have emerged on the scene.
Never anything less than inventive, "Nothin But Trash" shows
exactly why this debauched tradition survives to this very
day - It's bloody good fun. From cult heroes The Gun Club
and Link Wray to more recent contenders to the throne Saturn
V and Empress of Fur, its no frills and big thrills all
they way as we visit the seediest venues in the UK and
spend time at 2003's Wild Weekend in Benidorm, Spain. A

Suburb: the Record Label
PS, US 2006 sees the launch of Suburb. The Record Label.
Several new projects are in production and this exciting
new label looks set to flourish as a leading esoterica

roster, the majority of whom work with other labels such
as Ai, Lex, Merck, Highpoint Lowlife, Expanding and Warp,
including Blamstrain, Bovalflux, Hyl and Praveen with new
signings such as Canadian producer 11t1, Immovable Object,
Nameless and Buddy Peace. What SRL offers these artists
is a chance to explore new directions, and musically the
label is indeed a truly mixed bag, from the Eno-esque inspired
compositions of Immovable Object and the fresh hip hop
sounds of Buddy Peace to a sprinkling of experimental and
emotive electronic sounds. The first (bargain-priced) 14
track sampler release is housed in unusual and aesthetically
pleasing embossed soft clear plastic case with fold out
poster-style insert, introducing the label's desire to
develop creative packaging ideas in tandem with their adventurous
approach to musical output. SRL is also a label which enjoys
collaborations : for example, a split release between Merck

White Birch
Star Is Just A Sun
PS, GERMANY 2002 album from Norwegian ghost-pop trio. All
Music Guide REVIEW: "Star Is Just a Sun creates an
enveloping mood of whispered romantic drama, with an aching
atmosphere that strongly recalls Mark Hollis' solo record.
Endless soft layers of warm keyboard and organ sounds and
reverbed guitar cradle each song. A heartbeat-like pulse
comes to the forefront in "Love Is So Real," and
continues into "Beauty King," the only tune with
a driving drumbeat. Singer and multi-instrumentalist Ola
Flottum occasionally sings falsetto, but always sings softly,
enhancing the keen sense of intimacy that the White Birch
create so beautifully, while leaving attention to the poetic
(and English) lyrics optional for listeners." (Joslyn
Layne) Careless Talk Costs Lives REVIEW: "Richly atmospheric,
simple melodies: this is what Radiohead have been trying
to achieve since "Creep". The music of Norway's
White Birch is like Mark Kozelek putting Sigur Rós
to sleep, equally paranoid and gentle. Like fire. It's
based around the numerous Hitchcock movies played during
recording, and the bitterness of the cold world outside.
Although it sounds like one long lullaby, it would never
put me to sleep." (Slobodan Vujanovic)

White Birch
Come Up For Air
PS, GERMANY New album from Norwegian dream-pop trio. CKUA
Radio Network REVIEW: "It is truly remarkable what
this band can do in less than four minutes, including relieve
the pressure of time to such a degree that those four minutes
can feel like an hour's reprieve in a busy day. Although
it has been compared to TalkTalk, Mark Hollis, Coldplay
and Sigur Ros, The White Birch is truly a unique expression
and a listening pleasure." (Brian Golightly) After
great critical acclaim of their last album, 'Star Is Just
A Sun', Norwegian trio The White Birch come around again
with no intention of resting on their laurels. This time,
their atmospheric and melancholic dream pop is brighter,
lighter and even grander than before. And they keep the
melody sacred. The White Birch are reminiscent of little
other music, only a few references are so far mentioned
more than once: Sigur Rós, Talk Talk, Coldplay.
More commonly, though, people have associated the music
with the northern landscapes and vast nature, and with
music of that same background, like Kings Of Convenience,
Röyksopp, Jan Garbarek. The trio of Ola Fløttum,
HC Almendingen and Ulf Rogde has spent ten years cultivating
the expression of The White Birch - from angry, lo-fi Sonic
Youth-like riffing, through industrial prog and even charming
singer-songwriter pop, before finding their current sound
with the beginning of the Millennium. Their previous record,
'Star Is Just A Sun' (released in 2002 and also available),
took four years to make, whereas the new record has been
completed in merely three: TWB believes in music that is
made like diamonds - putting time and endurance into the
pressing of mountains of coal into intensely focused drops
of honest nature, and then polishing it with handicraft
and love into a human expression of beauty - to produce
something that will last. 'Come Up For Air' was released
by Glitterhouse in November 2005.

PS, US Third Alien Records release with this Japanese psychedelic
ensemble. This release sees the band paying homage to Black

John Pip (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 28TH)

we find Keith John Adams to be 1 of the most consBisitretnhtdlya

But his infectious, often absurdist style is distinctly

Allin, GG
Terror in America 1993 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 21ST)
PS, US "After spending time in a NYC studio recording
their final album together, GG was ready to continue his
onslaught against society and anyone else who stood in
his way. His anger had escalated and he was spiraling completely
out of control. The tour kicked off in May and for a one
month period we tore up the country like no band had ever
done before. GG's animalistic behavior and vicious display
of rage, chaos and total domination is more evident than
ever during these performances. After viewing this DVD,
you will understand why this was the most violent tour
in the history of Rock & Roll."

Antena
Toujours Du Soleil (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 10TH)
PS, UK A brand new album from Antena - stylish French electro-bossa
pioneers whose debut Camino Del Sol is now an acknowledged
genre classic. Antena's groundbreaking mix of Kraftwerk,
Suicide and the breezy tropicalia of the Gilberto family
(Joao, Astrud and Bebel) sounds as fresh in 2006 as in
1982, when John Foxx produced their debut single, The Boy
From Ipanema, and future Pet Shop Boy Neil Tennant tagged
them 'electro-samba'. The label still applies, and echoes
of the Antena sound can be heard in artists as diverse
as Stereolab, Electralane and Thievery Corporation indeed
the latter duo co-wrote two of the thirteen songs on Toujours
du Soleil. The remixed Antena trio for 2006 consists of
main songwriter Isabelle Antena together with daughter
Penelope Fasy (replacing her father Sylvain) and hip Brussels
dj Axailes Solar. Conceived as a sequel to Camino Del Sol,
Toujours du Soleil (Always the Sun) was recorded on the
French Riviera and produced by Dr Drak, Shape and The Cool
Groove Sessions. Featuring a stellar cast of prestigious
international guests, the 2006 Antena trip takes you from
Paris to Tokyo, Goa to Washington CD. Stand-out tracks
include energetic stepper Le Spinner (already familiar
from the Samsonite ad campaign), future lounge classic
Toujours du Soleil and the electro-groovy Love is to Blame,
as well as a magical version of the laid-back America classic
Horse With No Name. "Essential 2005's most charming
musical surprise" (Mojo, December 2005).

Band Of Horses
Everything All The Time (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MARCH 21ST)
PS, US Guitarist/vocalist Ben Bridwell and bassist Mat
Brooke formed Band Of Horses in 2004 after the dissolution
of their nearly ten-year run in northwest melancholic darlings
Carissa's Wierd. Carissa's Wierd trafficked in sadly beautiful
orchestral pop, whose songs told unflinching stories of
heartbreak and loss, leavened with defeatist humor. Band
Of Horses rises from those ashes. Buoyed by Bridwell's
warm, reverb-heavy vocals (which channel a strange brew
of Wayne Coyne, Neil Young, and Doug Martsch), the group's
woodsy, dreamy songs ooze with amorphous tension, longing,
and hope. Both raggedly epic and delicately pensive, this
is an album painted gorgeously in fragile highs and lows.

Battiato, Franco
Fetus (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MARCH 28TH)
PS, US F. B. moved into the 1970s on the crest of the progressive
rock wave. This 1972 impossibly strange record inhabits
that nether world of pop music, electronics, politics and
experimental rock. Fetus is an album beyond all definition.
It's a masterpiece of daring and wild risks that work every
single time. Battiato takes us through eight uniquely super-detailed
songs that tug at the heart strings as no other experimental
record ever could. Liner notes by Jim O'Rourke.

Battisti, Lucio
Amore E Non Amore (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 25TH)
PS, US Considered one of the greatest Italian songwriters
for his ability to reach the primal core of emotional matters,
Battisti is held in the same regard in Italy as John Lennon
is in the English-speaking world. Aided instrumentally
by members of PFM (progressive Italian rockers named oddly
enough for a bakery) and guitarist Alberto Radius of Formula
Tre, Lucio Battisti made this much adored 1971 cult masterpiece.
Imagine Brazilian psych-pop combo Os Mutantes fronted by
Southern soul legend James Carr and you'll get a glimpse
of this inexplicably accomplished and adventurous album.
