Parasol New Arrivals • November 13, 2007

Hey friends,

Well, we’ve had some technical issues here, at Parasol but luckily there’s a light at the end of the electronic tunnel. And when we say technical, we mean Paratechnical. Everything’s up and running so apologies all around for delayed replies in case you haven’t heard from us in a couple of days. Rest assured that we've always loved you.

OK, crew. Sorry I don’t have anything witty to spout at you today. I’m playing a mean game of catch-up so I’ll make it up to you next week. Real quick, so you know how I’m obsessed with The Band, right? There may be a new addition to the Ewing household. Hopefully, in the next few weeks, we'll be adopting a furry little creature that I'm cleverly going to name Virgil Caine (get it?). Virgil, Quick! Come see!

Just take what you need and leave the rest,

Royal & Paul

Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week

Whiskey Priest "Hungry" CD $11.00 (Bric-A-Brac)
Oh. My. Whiskey Priest (Easterly’s Noah Hall) has delivered the best and downy softest soft-pop-singer-songwriter record of the year, along with frontrunner for song of the year in the sweetly melancholy John Lennon honorarium “Love & A Gun”. Songs about hunger (all kinds) and hopefulness (and its converse), about astrological portent and an astronomical sadness, songs that have left us totally smitten. Songs sung in a Beautiful Hushed Voice, gently impelled by toney unplugged plucks and strums, backed by piano, reedy keys, and various otherworldly sounds, and what at times sounds like a plaintive, pretty celestial music box; which it isn’t, but you get the idea. Think Kevin Tihista (an obvious/likely influence?) at his most intimate and balladeering, the quieter moments of Big Star’s Third, Lennon, Cohen, etc. Very highly recommended. Check out the sound samples on our front page and see for yourself.

Abrahams, Chris
Thrown
PS, AUSTRALIA Equipped with a positive organ, a forte piano, a DX-7 and a piano, Chris Abrahams creates an exquisite and detailed extended composition on Thrown. A divergent audio-scape is created here - Abrahams shifts moods with a decisive intensity, never willing to settle into one stream - intense movements of eerily prepared organ move alongside his trademark flowing piano textures and scattered DX-7 arrangements. The results are quite unlike anything Abrahams has created before - an essential recording that places Abrahams at the forefront of Australian contemporary composition. BIOGRAPHY: "Abrahams relentless and steady patterning started to metamorphose the nature of the piano, the upper chords sounding like a distant locomotive hoot, and then an accordion weaving in and out of a shimmering bank of flutes." THE WIRE, UK. Chris Abrahams is best known for his work as pianist with the trio The Necks. The Necks have toured extensively and have released eleven albums in their fifteen-year career. Outside of the Necks, Chris has released four solo piano albums - "Walk", "Piano", "Glow" and "Streaming". He has also released five albums with Melanie Oxley as well as albums with Stevie Wishart, The Hunting Party, and Artery and the Benders. All up he has produced or co-produced some 24 albums.

Barrett, Lloyd
Mise En Scene
PS, AUSTRALIA For well over a decade, Australia's Lloyd Barrett has been issuing all manner of intricate sound works - from diligent examinations of post concrete sound and abstracted rhythmic projects to spacious ambient works. In 2005, he committed himself to create Mise En Scene, a work drawing on the concepts of filmic sound and exploring the possibilities of philosophies suggested by authors and theorists such as Michel Chion. The resulting album heralds a bold statement of intent from Barrett. Deeply evocative, maintaining moments of extreme intimacy and vast remoteness, this record is characterized by highly realized imagined sonic language. It speaks to the notions of acousmatic composition and delivers a document rich with decomposed found sound, unfamiliar texture and instrumental passages reflective of electroacoustic methodology. "There is no auditory container for sounds...music communicates with all times and all spaces of a film, even as it leaves them to their separate and distinct existences" (Michel Chion: 1990).

Bowmans, The
Far From Home
PS, US With harmonies that seem to come from one astonishing voice, Sarah (from RASPUTINA) and Claire Bowman share a rare, near telepathic musical bond. The Brooklyn based "roller coaster" duo is both sophisticated and imaginative, blending together the preserved vulnerability and abandoned glee of their childhood. The Bowmans deeply move and delight their audience worldwide with uncanny, evocative, and unforgettable performances. Sweeping across a full range of passions, the cohesive debut album "Far from Home" (Mother West), includes shattering acoustic harmony-rich ballads to heartening rock songs infused with early classical and gospel influences. The duo's sound has been compared to Gillian Welch, Neil Young and Joni Mitchell, to name a few, but they are impossible to pigeonhole. Sarah Bowman is also an accomplished cellist and currently performs with the famed cello driven rock trio Rasputina.

Bring Back the Guns
Dry Futures
PS, US The second release on this new label co-founded by JANA HUNTER and MATTHEW BROWNLIE. This record is an experiment in messing around with music at its molecular level: ignoring rules whenever possible and coming up with songs that obey their own whims. It's usually fast, short and barely-contained, with weird rhythms knocking up against big melodies, tripping over not-quite-but-almost over-the-top guitar work. BRING BACK THE GUNS twists its primal screams into detailed sculpture and invites you to knock over the ropes on your way to touch the art. Influences? They're present, but never aped. The Pixies are certainly there in the big guitar melodies, and there's some Les Savy Fav-ish dance urgency. Some of the stranger time signatures have that Dismemberment Plan feel, maybe. But ultimately,BBTG sounds like BBTG and not much like anything else.

Bryars, Gavin
Hommages
PS, UK Remastered. Originally released in November 1981 on Les Disques du Crepuscule, Hommages was recorded in Leicester in February 1981 and produced by noted Belgian new music composer Wim Mertens. The album was conceived as a series of diverse homage's to other composers, which include Bill Evans (My First Homage), Ferruccio Busoni and Gustav Holst (The English Mail-Coach and The Vespertine Park) and Percy Grainger (Hi-Tremolo). Featured musicians included Andrew Bilham, Ronald Reah, Andrew Renshaw, Nigel Shipway, Dave Smith, John White and Marie Wilson, as well as Gavin Bryars himself on piano and vibraphone. The album is the only one that documents the important period between Bryars' early experimental music and later works from Medea onwards, as well as his enthusiasm for small composer/performer ensembles. The new 63 minute digital remaster of Hommages now includes two bonus tracks composed and recorded by Bryars during the same period: Danse Dieppoise, and the lengthy piano piece Out of Zaleski's Gazebo. The booklet features extensive notes by Gavin Bryars on the origin and performance of all six pieces, and preserves the original album cover artwork by Marc Borgers.

Bunyan, Vashti
Some Things Just Stick In Your Mind
PS, US Singles & Demos 1964-67, very nice. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "This 25-track collection couldn't be bettered as a thorough sweep of her material from this era, including both sides of her two mid-'60s 45s; three tracks from singles that went unreleased; demos and tapes from 1966-1967; and a good dozen tracks from a 1964 tape that Bunyan found in her brother's attic decades later. As interesting as these are to Bunyan fans, it does show a talent that's still in fairly embryonic shape. The mid-'60s singles (released and otherwise) are quite reminiscent of Marianne Faithfull's orchestrated pop-folk recordings from the same era, yet even wispier and more precious. The similarity can't help but be accentuated by the choice of an unreleased Mick Jagger-Keith Richards composition ("Some Things Just Stick in Your Mind") as her 1965 debut 45, just as Faithfull had debuted with another Rolling Stones offering, "As Tears Go By." Some Phil Spector influence gets poured into the production on "Coldest Night of the Year," done with fellow Andrew Loog Oldham clients Twice as Much. A folkier approach is taken on the unreleased 1966-1967 demos and tapes that feature just her voice and acoustic guitar, though the songs likely would have also ended up in a Baroque pop-folk bag had they been produced for official release. "I'd Like to Walk Around in Your Mind" and "17 Pink Sugar Elephants" show her drifting toward more unusual and fanciful lyrics, though the oddest tune, "Don't Believe," sounds almost like it could have been a demo targeted toward Herman's Hermits in its skipalong jauntiness. The dozen voice-and-acoustic-guitar songs from the 1964 tape (lasting only 23 minutes in all) are even barer than the 1966-1967 demos, and yet more subdued and fragile-sounding, bringing to mind a young melancholic girl singing to herself in a tiny bed sit on a cloudy London day."

Davis, Greg & Jeph Jerman
Ku
PS, AUSTRALIA The act of conjuring remarkable sound from found objects is at the very heart of this recording from American musicians Greg Davis and Jeph Jerman. Having met in Arizona some years back, Davis and Jerman commenced working together on a series of recording projects. Improvising with a range of implements and devices ranging from sticks, stones and low-fi electronics to prepared instruments, gongs and broken percussion, the pair sought to develop a personal language that reflected their individual approaches but also created a shared sensibility and aesthetic quality. Placing their work in a range of environments, most of which orbit around Jerman's ranch in Cottonwood, Davis and Jerman create a richly textured array of sounds from the most modest of sonic tools. Each of the works featured here collects together multiple improvised sessions, which have been edited to create a flowing sense of movement and space. These tempered post-concréte works resolve a joint interest from these two musicians in the act of freeform found sound improvisation and experimentation.

English, Lawrence
Ghost Towns
PS, AUSTRALIA Recorded in the later half of 2003, this composition that falls just Shy of 20 minutes is composed largely of field recordings, the only processing being via eq and pitch shifting. The work is an abstracted Impressionist sound portrait, sketching out the isolated soundscapes that exist, for the most part unheard, in these forgotten realms. It highlights the rich and at times unexpectedly synthetic sound world existing in these spaces. Cicadas are matched Against 44 gallon drums popping in the morning sun and wire fences resonating to the backdrop of sites such as the haunted imperial Hotel in Ravenswood, far northern Australia. Packaged in a jewel case this disc is spun to 8cms, the remainder of The casing being clear, with some printing extending over the clear casing to create a beautifully transparent design.

For Barry Ray
New Days
PS, AUSTRALIA For Barry Ray is the husband and wife duo of Carina Thorén (Sweden) and John Chantler (Australia). After a number of compilation appearances, long gone CDrs and lathe cut records under various guises, the pair bunked down over the winter of 06/07 to lay the foundations for 'New Days', kicking off things Christmas morning with the gift of a London turned silent and a sky free of planes. On 'New Days', the sound moves from the wash of organs and lofi analog detail that opens the record to ecstatic blasts of freeform percussion and electronics, some hypnotic distorted keyboards and looped flute tones. Dom Garwood (Alexander Tucker/Ladywoodsman et al) dropped by for a meal and laid down some clarinet parts. The records second half increases the sense of space. An old Swedish folk melody is buried beneath waves of fuzz while Loren Connors-esque guitar notes step gently in the wake. Two short interludes follow, the thrum and pause of 'The Porcelain Horse's analog tape manipulations and the heavily processed guitar loop of 'If Mingus was your Mother' - its intimately suggested backbeat gently peeled back by computer interventions... The record closes with a piece of extended quietitude - acoustic guitar and piano notes ring out against great chunks of silence. Carina Thorén has a background in, sculpture, design and performance art. She has also played in the groups Satellite Book (with Pascale Berthier) and Trigger Happy & Performing Apes (with Berlinbased artist Carolina Hellsgård) producing free form jams out in the Czech forest akin to No Neck Blues Band or Jackie-O Motherfucker. John Chantler released his first solo record 'Monoke' on ROOM40 back in 2003 whilst living on the rural Japanese island of Shikoku. He also showed up playing drums on Tujiko Noriko's 'Blurred in my Mirror' (ROOM40, 2005), played a ripping set with fellow Australian music fiend Matt Nicholson (Function, Locust Music) in support of Fennesz at the ICA and has performed with avant-pop ensemble Maher Shalal Hash Baz (see 'Live at Aoiheya' Chapter, 2005) and co-produced the forthcoming record by fellow Maher travelers Tenniscoats.

Friedl/Vorfeld
Pech
PS, AUSTRALIA Pech is the latest duo recording from inside pianist Reinhold Friedl and avant percussionist Michael Vorfeld. Over the past five years, this pair of German musicians have created some of the most engaging and imaginative electro-acoustic music, exploring the potentials of subtle performance techniques and refined compositional approaches. On Pech, the duo seek to uncover the hidden and masked character of their instruments - the piano is altered via various preparations and unconventional ways of bringing the strings to vibration, whilst the percussion transgresses beyond the rhythmic into a humming textural mass. The result of these two musical workstations meeting is simply breathtaking and reveals a range of provocative and commanding qualities from these traditional instrumental set-ups. On Friedl As pianist and composer, Friedl has released countless group and solo recordings. He heads up the new music ensemble zeitkratzer and he has worked with musicians and composers such as Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth), Helmut Oehring, Nicolas Collins, Lou Reed, Merzbow a.k.a. Masami Akita, Radu Malfatti, Bernhard Guenter, Mario Bertoncini (nuova consonanza) and many other. On Vorfeld Michael Vorfeld plays percussion and self designed stringed instruments and works in the field of experimental music, improvised music and sound art. Much of his work is concerned with the realization of electro-acoustic sound pieces. Beside solo activities he is a member of various ensembles and collaborates with artists from different art forms.

You'll find spherical guitar walls and arpeggios as well as distorted and disturbing moments. "Shiver Me Timbers" opens another chapter that is definitely linked to Jerome's handwriting.

Frost
Steelwound
PS, AUSTRALIA Seething washes of ambient noise, droning treated guitars and swelling compositions, littered like autumn leaves in the winter wind - cold, atmospheric and truly beautiful. Since his earliest days, Ben Frost has been fascinated by the cinematic qualities of the guitar. His output to this point has hinted at this, but with Steelwound he makes a bold statement of intent. Finding his way to a deserted stretch of Johanna Beach along the Great Ocean Road (Victoria, Australia) in early 2003 Frost set up a remote studio at a derelict cabin overlooking the icy waters of Bass Strait. With a constant wind flowing off the sea his only companion, Frost started work on a series of improvisations that would eventually become Steelwound. A few months go by and Frost has made his way back to civilization. He begins editing the masses of treated guitar from the Johanna Beach improvisations and before long a theme takes hold - one that very much reflects the isolation of the environment where the tracks were created. Each of the pieces on Steelwound is an epic journey, colored with a deep sense of filmic narrative and suggested dialogues. The textural quality of the works, laced with field recordings and lost vocal fragments, sketches out the emotional sounds capes Frost had unwittingly gathered during his time at Johanna Beach. Each piece is a splintered fragment in time - a forgotten memory beautifully rediscovered in a moment of introspection.

Bright Tomorrow/Little Bloody Shoulder
PS, UK Picture disc 7", numbered edition of 1000 copies, LIMITED AVAILABILITY. FB is Andrew Hung & Benjamin John Power of Bristol, UK. Initially, the group was born as an outlet for their nihilistic noise tendencies but quickly, the duo started harnessing noise as a tool to immerse and evoke. All elements fuse, and drone becomes melody becomes rhythm. Tribal beats weave among Technicolor dronescapes while distorted vocals scream. FB straddle you between the wall of sound that lies between the beginning of destruction and the end of birth.

Harvey, PJ
White Chalk
PS, US 180 gm vinyl LP. Her eighth studio album. For this album Harvey has moved away from alternative rock and recorded a set of songs for piano, despite her lack of expertise on the instrument. In an interview in The Wire she explained "the great thing about learning a new instrument from scratch is that it...liberates your imagination." As well as this, she sings in a higher register than usual, at a pitch outside her normal range. Lyrically, however, Harvey has stuck to the dark, moody themes typical of much of her music. TRACKLISTING: 01. THE DEVIL 02. DEAR DARKNESS 03. GROW GROW GROW 04. WHEN UNDER ETHER 05. WHITE CHALK 06. BROKEN HARP 07. SILENCE 08. TO TALK TO YOU 09. THE PIANO 10. BEFORE DEPARTURE 11. Hefner
Breaking God's Heart
PS, UK When first released in July 1998 Hefner's debut album; 'Breaking God's Heart' was quite out of step with other guitar bands of the time. The sparse, folksy arrangements and dry, scratchy production was at odds with the ambitious, string laden brit pop of the time. Although Hefner had the tunes to win them support from the NME and Steve Lamacq, their idiosyncratic, leftfield approach meant their most loyal supporter was going to be John Peel, recording 7 sessions for him in their short career. Lead singer; Darren Hayman's primary influences were folk, country and the American lo-fi indie of the time. Hayman rejected an American singing style in favour of his own Thames estuary accent and sang carefully observed songs about lost love in East London and Essex. Hefner never crossed into the mainstream but they had an unusually loyal following who still believe them to be the best of their kind. This smaller, intricate, personal music is missed today. This release expands the album to a 2 CD set and includes all of the B-sides and associated singles, the rare first two singles, the long deleted Hefner Soul EP as well as unreleased recordings. Hefner's other 3 albums will be released in similar formats through out 2007 and 2008.

PS, MEXICO L.A.'s Kobol return with a second installment of their jazz inflicted electronica. This time around Kobol showcase their remixing skills alongside new tracks and collaborations. Unlike their previous outing, Broken Ebony, Kobol have cleaned up the glitch in the machine but the smooth panoramic textures over banging down tempo rhythms remain. Murcof, State Shirt and Pepito get the remix treatment while the collaborations with singers Jazz De Mar, Emma Ejwertz and Ximena Sariñana profile Kobol's songwriting craft. Extempore shows how Kobol's production mastery has matured since their debut, providing us with larger than life sound structures that rely on acoustic drums, guitars, digital trickery and lush melodic arrangements. $15.00

La Casa Azul
La Revolucion Sexual
PS, SPAIN At least we can hold and touch the long awaited second album by LA CASA AZUL, and with it we can reveal one of the best kept secrets of our times. You won't believe it: the kids in the band are not human! They are humanoids, programmed by producer and composer Guille Milkyway so they can perform his high-tech, hyper vitaminated, nippon-influenced pop songs. Some did already suspect that such a thing could be possible, but most had absolutely no idea that such lovely lads as Clara, Sergio, Virginia, David and Oscar were really programmed androids under the orders of their producer's privileged brain. They still do play, dance and sing, though, and they do it as well as they have always done. It's only that now they don't hide anymore the plugs they have in their backs and the pentagon they have in their chests, through which they receive all the needed information. Their connection gives them the energy they need -that seemingly eternal energy they have spread around the world, now we know how could they cope!- and gives them the chance to melt into one and create the most perfect harmonies, never heard by the human ear. Under this new technological, synthetic, futuristic stylism, the songs in "La revolución sexual" fly away from Love as the one only lyrical axis and dig deeper in fear and frustration. There's also vengeance, anxiety, insecurity and the search for balance. Musically, the songs on the new album by LA CASA AZUL are based in the same patterns that turned them into world cult artists: melodic pop songs, with catchy choruses that are easy to strum and singalong. High class pop music, that here shows itself as intentionally artificial, more made in Shibuya than ever. Songs are here maybe more complex than before, but always keeping the timeless classic pop influence that, along with its coups d'effect, sudden changes and surprising twists, describe the magical touch of the songs by LA CASA AZUL. Nevertheless, this time everything tends to be intentionally more extreme. More clearly artificial, more made in Shibuya. Filtered voices, a huge edition work, sounds from here and there, a thousand details that make every listen entertaining and magic, keeping a delicate balance between the purest 21st century technology and the most classic songs in the history of pop music, that Guille knows so well: as if we put all the history of pop music in a cocktail shaker, without any prejudice, Japanese style. In the music by LA CASA AZUL live together without any problems 50's doo wop and 60's easy listening and bubblegum de los 60, 80's technopop, 70's disco and 90's shibuya-key and europop; references to such different yet close bands and artists as ELO, PILOT, Hugo Montenegro, PIZZICATO FIVE, Jean-Jacques Perrey, DENIM, Jacno, Enoch Light, Lio, Silvetti, The Jetset, Scoobydoo... Or to mention more contemporary names: APRILS, YMCK, PLUS TECH SQUEEZE BOX, CAPSULE, Andreas Dorau, STEREOTOTAL, HELEN LOVE, THE GO! TEAM, THE BRAN FLAKES, SCISSOR SISTERS, OPTIGANALLY YOURS...

Labradford
Prazision
PS, US REMASTERED w/ BONUS TRACK! Their ground-breaking debut!!! ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "As the premiere release on Kranky, which would become one of the '90s most notable U.S. indie labels for its series of adventurous releases, Prazision already holds a certain place in the history books. Regardless of who put it out, however, this excellent debut would command attention for introducing Labradford and their marvelous drone/ambient sound to the world. Inspired by such cult-level titans of '80s drone as Spacemen 3 and Loop (whose ex-members almost immediately championed the band after Prazision's appearance), the then-duo's ability to create seemingly stark (but quite layered and complex, the more you listened to it), echoed, modern psychedelic masterpieces made itself apparent from the beginning."

Country for True Lovers
PS, US Ltd. edition vinyl pressing of LA singer/songwriter who detours from her typical neo-lounge sound & makes an excursion into country. Mandell, Eleni
Miracle of Five
PS, US Beautiful silk screened covers. Hand numbered & limited to 335! Producer keyboardist Andy Kaulkin captured Mandell solo, singing the songs while strumming on her nylon stringed guitar, overdubbing the rest of the band later. While that might seem a bit artificial for such rootsy, jazz tinged music, the results justify the means. Mandell sounds relaxed & there is a spaciousness to the material resulting from Kaulkin's ability to add & subtract instruments at will. Mandell's voice has shifted from its once edgy PJ Harvey timbre to a far more luxurious, breathy style, similar to Aimee Mann, especially on the languorous "Salt Truck." This is hushed, melancholy music that remains sparse, even stark, despite the addition of such relatively exotic accompaniment as harp, celeste, clarinet & vibes (from X drummer D.J. Bonebrake). The always impressive Nels Cline is credited w/guitars, dobro & "weird sounds." He restrains his typically avant garde, jazzy excursions to bring unusual tones & textures to the project.

Os Mutantes
Live at the Barbican Theatre 2006 [Bonus Tracks]
PS, US Astounding live documentation of Brazilian equatorial psych outfit's 2006 reunion gig. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "The original Os Mutantes brothers, Sergio Dias and Aarnaldo Baptista assembled a band-that included the amazing chanteuse Zelia Duncan replacing original female vocalist Rita Lee-- with drummer Dinho Leme, Henrique Peters, Vitor Trida, Fabiao Recco and Esmerya Bulgari, to perform in London at the storied Barbican Theater in 2006. This document is the entire concert, presented in stunning sound, with crackling energy to prove that those who attended, press and punters, weren't lying about how great it was. These 21 songs offer proof positive that years can indeed melt away, and whatever dowdy and dodgy myths that surrounded the fate its creators had endured, were wiped away within the first few minutes of set opener "Don Quixote." Os Mutantes didn't run though their hits, they played them with fire, humor, astonishing finesse and and creativity revealing the sincere dearth of the same that exists on the rock scene (indie or not) at this moment in time... Forget what you know or don't. If you've not listened to Os Mutates before, this is a great place to start; you can hear the studio records-amazing as they are-later. If you own the studio records, they will not adequately prepare you for what's on display here."

Pluramon
The Monstrous Surplus
PS, GERMANY This is the fifth full-length release by Marcus Schmickler aka Pluramon. The Monstrous Surplus bears three different vocalists and as many narrative voices. The songs do not simply present a singer or songwriter self: they push the envelope of what it means to tell a story. Completely contemporary, yet unabashedly diving into moods, the album succeeds in capturing the fragmented, yet sophisticated soul of urban life: "Can't Disappear" is a story about a secret threesome relationship, "Fresh Aufhebung" is a spoken pamphlet for a break-up and "If Time Was On My Side" is a melancholic story about bad timing with love. Listeners of the previous albums will recognize a style that remains dreamy and atmospheric with pop songs that are sometimes laid-back yet melancholic, even enigmatic, at other times dramatic and intense. Featuring appearances by Julia Hummer, a prominent young German actress who tours with her own band Too Many Boys, Julee Cruise, who was already featured on the last album, and New York-based German artist and writer, Jutta Koether, who is also known as co-founder of leading German pop magazine, SPEX. The fourth vocalist is Marcus himself on one song as well as background on other songs. Also responsible for the production, Marcus Schmickler is well-known in a lot of different contexts related to electronic music, let it be beat-oriented, improvised music or classical music.

PS, US Champaign, IL combo Shipwreck's seond full-length album (on the heels of two awesome EPs), released by Polyvinyl sub-label None Records. Shipwreck have a sound that somehow evokes the enigmatic, haunting, and sometimes dangerous allure of the open sea. It seems an all-too-convenient metaphor, but in practice the metaphor feels true. Alternately placid and furious, Shipwreck melds quiet and loud in a way that might fall apart in lesser hands. Their full length debut, Rabbit in the Kitchen With a New Dress On, is a sonic blast of desert heat that recalls a synchronicity between the dreamy darkness of Depeche Mode and the raucous abandon of the Pixies. Haunting images and fractured narratives create an enveloping reality of Lynchian eeriness.

Soda Pop Kids, The
Teen Bop Dream
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Saying that the Soda Pop Kids love their pre-punk/post-punk power-pop isn't simply a description but a raison d'etre -- opening track "Saturday Every Day" starts with an overt Bay City Rollers nod and then shifts into a track worthy of BCR-celebrator Nick Lowe. Not for nothing does one of the bandmembers have a Stiff Records T-shirt on in their cover image. On its second album the Portland quintet delivers precisely what is expected of it, continuing the spirit of its debut Write Home with another ten songs of the same spirit. It the results aren't as just-plain-great as they were with their fellow Oregonians, the late and lamented Exploding Hearts, Teen Bop Dream is good, rough trashy fun."

He & She - Soft Sounds for Gentle People Vol. 5
PS, US The fifth installment in the Soft Sound For Gentle People series features twenty-two far-out pop psych duos from the late '60s. It pretty much began with Sonny and Cher. When the teener template of Paul and Paula and Dick and Deedee got superimposed on the hip set, a new genre was born. The success of co-ed pairings like Mimi and Richard and Nino and April had coffee house folkies shacking up in droves and soon every town had it's own dynamic duo. There were variations too. Paul and Mary found their Peter. John Phillips had two chicks so he had to find another Papa. But the sound was what made it, the call and response, the traded verses-love stories acted out over twelve-strings ringin', like shaggy-topped Romeos and Juliets in tight slacks and pilgrim belts. You've heard some of the reissues-the Blackburns and Snows, the Jims and Jeans-their stories and music made public again after years in obscurity. Now hear the ones who didn't quite crack the radio charts, at least not for long. The ones whose songs remain unsung. Heroes and heroines in the nightclubs and studio booths. Reaching out in the darkness, and the sunshine too. In love and touching forever. She and He. He and She.

Volume Objects (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 27TH)
PS, US Abstract Ambience - Broken Space. In the desire to make recorded sound as tactile as possible Autistici (UK), recently featured on 12k's Blueprints compilation (12k1039), has sculpted found objects, broken acoustic instruments, synthesizers and environmental recordings into Volume Objects. Expertly realized and designed, Volume Objects is loose and organic but demands careful listening. Melody and form are hinted at and then in a whisper, a crackle, are gone. A sense of narrative and place created as if a hundred tiny objects are scattered in front of you, a fractured story that you thought you once remembered. The packaging for this release includes an 8-page booklet of black & white photography by Taylor Deupree inspired by the music and titles of the audio pieces. Birchville Cat Motel
Seventh Ruined Hex (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 20TH)
PS, US A further step out in Birchville Cat Motel's ruminations on time space distortion featuring the additional mystical talents of fellow gravity destroyer, Matthew Bower (Hototogisu/Sunroof!). Seventh Ruined Hex presents like a lonesome planet, occasionally struck with super-sized fragments of space detritus, but for the most part just hangs around, spinning on its axis and doing fuck-all. Strangely emotive for 'a buncha noise'. Like the deepest love, its warm yet tenuous, and filled with the ever-present potential for loss and brutality. More in line with the estranged love-tangle of the Birchville classic 'Chi Vampires' than the most recent befuddling hyperspace rock-overload of recent albums like 'Our Love Will Destroy the World' and 'Birds Call Home their Dead'. Features Matthew Bower who has been known to put out a good album or two on a regular basis. Powerful. Beautiful. Masculine. Girly. Loud. Tender. Heavy. Soulful.

Wakool (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 13TH)
Ps, AUSTRALIA Recorded over a series of four Sunday afternoons, Wakool is an interrogation into an expanded range of techniques and gestures applied to instruments including banjo, electro acoustic guitar, bandura, and eukolin. In part an antidote to laborious studio process, this project privileges live stereo recordings without additional overdubs, processing or equalization. The varied and spontaneous nature of David's effortless playing across an eclectic range of instruments was recorded transparently to direct the aural focus on the dynamics and nuances comprising each performance. In some ways Wakool is pure documentation of process, simply demonstrating David's formidable range of concepts and techniques developed over an extraordinary period of experimentation and research commencing in the late 70s. On the other hand David's meticulous preparation of each instrument combined with his prodigious knowledge of improvisational practice provides a complexity that negates the need for sophisticated studio process. Wakool stands as a testament to David's sustained and unwavering commitment to improvisation, which he executes with enthusiasm, vigour and inventiveness that easily posits him as the most vital figure in the Australian musical avant-garde. --Philip Samartzis

Cline, Nels/Carlos Giffoni/Alan Licht/Lee Ranaldo
Nothing Makes Any Sense (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 20TH)
PS, US A constantly shifting and engaging long-form piece of developed drone, foreboding melody, and harsh grit, Nothing Makes Any Sense finds Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth), Nels Cline (Nels Cline Singers, Wilco), and Alan Licht pushing their guitars into a cacophonous state that bears much influence from the post-jazz fields they've all cut their teeth in, but also bearing down a forceful brutality that has sometimes eluded their past material. While Carlos Giffoni uses his analog Synth mastery to adequately contend and mesh seamlessly with the trio of strings, letting his analog noise pulsate and pierce with its own sense of contained stampede. This collaboration was recorded in February of this year at the sadly defunct NYC venue Tonic and was mixed and mastered by the ubiquitous James Plotkin. Included with the packaging are ink drawings from Lee Ranaldo and a review of Lou Reed's live classic Rock N' Roll Animal by cult musician/Creem scribe Peter Laughner, which includes a line which bestowed this album with its title.

DJ Olive
Sleep (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 13TH)
PS, AUSTRALIA As one of the pioneers of 'sleep' parties in the low level apartment blocks and converted industrial lots in Brooklyn during the early nineties, DJ Olive's latest long player collects together his experiments in ambient sound spaces. It's a celebration of filtered texture, hidden melody and gentle turntable flickers. Like Buoy his debut solo record for ROOM40, Sleep is delivered with a simple message 'please listen to this quietly, it's a sleeping pill' and while its aim might be to induce unconsciousness, this mission is completed more through a diligent understanding of the possibilities of ambient sound than through repetition or minimalist approaches. A refined and emotive composition, Sleep shifts through a variety of phases, reflecting in some ways on the nature of our sleep patterns. As each section unfolds, DJ Olive reveals his characteristic sensibility for spatial mixes and in the process generates some of the most remarkable and refined post-ambient music to be created in the 20th century. Free floating audio clouds paint a subtle portrait of dimly lit late night spaces, faded whispers, close bodies huddled and in the corner DJ Olive's echoed lullabies coloring the audio sphere.
