Porchmass
PS, US The trio of Grant Capes, Tim Goodwillie, & Justin McInteer
have churned out an entire catalog of blissed-out improvisations that
range from the organic & melodic to overblown chaos. They only
use a small arsenal of acoustic & battery-powered instruments,
singing bowls, & pots & pans as makeshift percussion, but
it is a magic junkyard orchestra. Somewhere near the islands of Jewelled
Antler or The Vanishing Voice. Between the solemn notes of the accordian,
washes of droning keyboards, & turbulent acoustic guitars rises
a heartbroken voice that acts as a torch. The wordless vocals flicker
like volcanic ash falling from a sunkissed sky.

All Natural
Elements (Fire)
PS, US RECENT. "Fire" is pt 1 of a 4-part series in which
each album will represent a different natural element & hip-hop
vibe. True to its name, this represents hiphop's aggressive boom-bap
sound made popular during the mid-90s. MC cap D sets the tone on the
initial track w/ an aggressive battle rap in which he shows that he
is still on top of his game. On past albums they have displayed a
variety of sounds & flavors, however this is "in your face"hip-hop
throughout.

Bisi, Martin
Sirens of the Apocalypse
PS, US Martin Bisi, performer/songwriter and prominent indie fringe
record producer has been at the forefront of studio recording since
the 80's, with a long discography that includes classic records from
SONIC YOUTH, SWANS, JOHN ZORN, HERBIE HANCOCK (Rockit), BOREDOMS,
and AFRICA BAMBAATA to name a few. In his own band he plays guitar,
sings and expands 4 piece rock into a mutant, experimental-pop concoction.
Bisi's persona can be raw and confrontational, as well as funny and
self effacing. The songs are mostly entertaining vignettes of love
and obsession in NYC.

Black Angels, The
Directions to See a Ghost
PS, US From deep in the heart of Texas, armed with the home-grown
mantra "Turn On, Tune In, Drone Out," The Black Angels ring
real and rugged like a crimson full moon-lit night. Their self proclaimed
"Native American Drone 'N' Roll" genre has progressed from
communal living and the members' eclectic upbringings. This is heavy-duty
psychedelic rock with an incessant primitive beat that echoes the
spirit of the 13th Floor Elevators and early Stones. "Directions
To See A Ghost" is the second full-length album from Austin's
darkest droners. With tidal rhythms and rasping epics, "Directions
To See A Ghost" is a driving, psychedelic masterpiece that churns
through 72 minutes and 11 tracks. This highly anticipated follow-up
to the band's 2006 critically acclaimed debut will leave listeners
buzzing.

Black Taj
Beyonder
PS, US This second long-player continues to explore the psychedelic
and classic rock templates with which they worked on their s/t debut,
an incendiary mix of self-aware stoner jams ('Spacewash') and progressive
rock time shifts ('Cold Comfort') that recall each of the musicians'
previous projects. For most of the 1990s, Dave Brylawski and Steve
Popson played in (the recently-reunited) Polvo. In the late 1990s,
Grant Tenille joined Brylawski in the primarily folk-inflected Idyll
Swords. While many bands in the current hard rock revival mindlessly
ape their idols, Black Taj deliver an intelligent updating of these
conventions, and prove again that the twin guitar attack of Thin Lizzy
and the muscular riffing of early ZZ Top still has legs. If you have
been wondering what one-half of Polvo has been up to over the last
decade, look no further. For fans of Awesome Color, Witch, and Dead
Meadow.

Botticellis, The
Old Home Movies
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "You'd never know from listening that
it took the Botticellis' four years to craft their debut album Old
Home Movies. It sounds like the work of one sun-soaked late summer
afternoon spent playing tunes with friends and family. The album is
suffused with warmth and peacefulnees that flows from the gentle strum
of the guitars, the rich organ that seeps into songs like the golden
glow of a sunset, the lush vocal harmonies, and the classic pop song
structures laid down by the group's architect Alexi Glickman. He also
possesses the kind of sweet, high voice that would have held him in
good stead in the Wilson household. Indeed like much West Coast pop
since about 1962 on, the Botticellis have drawn influence from the
Beach Boys. In this case it's the late-'60s version of the band when
the boys sported beards and preferred to surf their inner consciousness
rather than the waves. You can also hear Phil Spector in the reverb-y
production, power pop in some of the more uptempo tracks (like the
back to back crunch of "Up Against the Glass" and "The
Reviewer," which are enough to put every band on Rainbow Quartz
to shame), '70s AM radio pop in the slow, sensitive ballads (the gloriously
sugar-y "Who Are You Now" would have slotted in perfectly
between Bread and Seals & Crofts), and the peppy jangle of modern
Canadian indie pop. These influences are very well blended into an
overall sound that is purely the band's own, though, and it's easy
to enjoy the album on its own instead of constantly, distractingly,
playing spot the lift. Maybe it's the craft that went into making
the album, the sheer amount of time they must have taken picking the
best songs and performances that makes Old Home Movies so fully realized.
Maybe it's just a happy accident. No matter, the important thing is
that the album is as fine a slice of warm, sweet indie pop as you're
liable to find in 2008 or anytime. "

Carrie's sound is expanded beyond the folkie twee indie-tronica of
her first release, Honey Blue Star. Balancing lush and lo-fi sound
aesthetics, Carrie's folksy mannerisms go in between The Postal Service
and The Radio Dept. universes, landing in an unique and minimal melodic
pop. New member Pelvis joins Carrie and contributes sounds and backing
vocals to the album. 1981 was produced by Rubén Tamayo (Fax).

This collection is a wide range of sound works from the ultra-minimal

musicality of "how things change" to the loud violent distortion
of "tempt" (a piece only performed a handful of times for

Christian Family Underground, The
For The Depth Of Your Union
PS, US Summer of '06 Family Underground (DK) recorded with Dave Nuss
of NNCK at Black Dirt Studios in the woods of upstate NY. The yield
was as characteristically unhinged as one might expect: sweeping electronic
sounds backed with wood and bone percussion spirit-conjure. However
also harvested was some new and especially tasty crop: sung and spoken
song, electric guitar/conga 'rock,' and an odd, ghostly sheen coating
the entire proceeding. Nuss comments on the session: 'I remember when
we were recording, momentarily leaving the studio and going out into
the night and feeling it thicken like a partition separating us from
this intense state of clear consciousness we had in the recording,
which was like... humankind's natural state. And then thinking about
Jesper from FU, an adopted Vietnamese living in DK, and how much he
resembles Michael Jackson, and realizing that across continents, no
man can be divided from himself. We had to make this music to provide
for us some fantasy of fulfillment that would carry us through the
weekend like rejuvenated suns born again climbing to heaven, after
being washed in the deepest, bluest sea...' Jacket by designer Susan

PS, US Recorded in '81 & released in '83 by Index Records, making
them, strangely enough, labelmates w/ Wall of Voodoo. They were formed
in '78 from the remnants of NO FUN & THE I-HOLES, Louisville,
Kentucky's 1st 2 punk bands. It's fair to describe them as a genre
unto themselves. They came from punk rock & art school & sounded
like none of their potential allies. Critic Jordan Mamone hit the
nail on the head when he wrote: "Every rare utterance from these
unsentimental adventurers possesses a passion & a manifesto-writing
fervor usually reserved for turn-of-the-century culture movements."

Eyes in the Back of My Eyes in the Back of My Head

assured & swinging "free-bop" collective quartet, who
have been developing their unique take on modern jazz for a decade.

moved towards playing only original compositions. Central to the group's
sound is a commitment to developing challenging & original compositions.

Cud
Showbiz
PS, UK Having departed the independent world and signed with A&M
in 1991, CUD proceeded to pursue the commercial success their previous
releases had hinted at with 1992's Asquarius. Following this, their
first hit album, proved to be the band s longest break between releases
(largely the result of some inter-label disharmony), but they eventually
emerged in 1994 with Showbiz. Recorded primarily in Scotland (at a
studio owned by Fish of Marillion fame, no less), this record saw
their sound mature and showcased a broader range of songwriting styles
than previous efforts. It was well received on its release in April
1994, garnering favorable reviews, and spawned two UK hit singles
in Neurotica and One Giant Love. Sadly, though, the album proved to
be the band's last officially released effort as the pressures of
life on a major and all that it entails took their toll on the band.
This remastered version also includes a number of B-Sides from the
album's single releases, as well as some unreleased out-takes and
demo versions, including material intended for their next album, which
hasn't seen the light of day before now. This release (along with
two more Cherry Red CUD Reissues) comes hot on the tails of 2006's
Rich and Strange The Anthology compilation and 2007's well received
re-issues of two more of the band's albums, all of which reminded

Elvis Belt
PS, UK Formed in Leeds in 1986, CUD went on to forge one of the more
interesting and indefinable sounds of the late 80s / early 90s indie
scene. Fusing a catchy pop sensibility with danceable grooves and
intelligent and often humorous lyrics, they soon became firm independent
favorites and began releasing records on Leeds based Reception Records
in 1987, very quickly catching the ear of John Peel and becoming a
regular fixture of his broadcasts. Three quality singles into their
career, the band secured a deal with Imaginary Records, where they
continued a fine run of singles and eventually released their debut
album. Capitalizing on the band's underground success, in June 1990
Imaginary followed this with this fantastic compilation of their early
releases, topping several independent charts in the process and further
establishing an already strong reputation. Some eighteen years later,
Elvis Belt is updated and reissued here by Cherry Red, together with
a wealth of rarities and unreleased tracks from those formative years
and beyond. This release features the original album in its entirety,
carefully remastered and now sitting comfortably alongside Elvis Handbag,
an additional disc conceived by the band as a sister album to the
original release and containing a number of further B-Sides, Peel
Session recordings and cover versions (including the band's legendary
take on Bohemian Rhapsody, previously only available on the ultra-rare
Alvin Lives in Leeds compilation). This release (along with two more
Cherry Red CUD Reissues) comes hot on the tails of 2006's Rich and
Strange The Anthology compilation and 2007s well received re-issues
of two more of the band's albums, all of which reminded the world

Leggy Mambo
PS, UK Following the release of their debut When In Rome, Kill Me
and 1990 s Elvis Belt compilation (CDMRED355), Leeds indie heroes
CUD set to work on their next album for Imaginary Records. Recorded
during the Summer of 1990, Leggy Mambo proved to be a step in all
the right directions, cementing the sound developed over their previous
releases and capitalizing on the band s pop sensibilities to provide
their most immediately accessible collection of songs to date. Produced
by XTCs Dave Gregory and released in October 1990, the album spawned
the well-received singles Robinson Crusoe and Magic (both of which
might have achieved greater success had they been released on a larger
label) and generated a huge amount of industry interest, eventually
leading to their signing with A & M the following year. This Cherry
Red Gold top Copy version of the album features the newly remastered
original disc, as well as a collection of demos and alternate versions,
all of which have been hand picked by the band themselves. This release

PS, US A year in the making, The Daysleepers return with their full
length Clairecords Debut! "Drowned in a Sea of Sound" takes
nothing but the best elements of the band's highly acclaimed EP's
and blends them with some entirely new experimental soundscapes. The
Daysleepers trademark sound of mixing Dreampop, Post-Punk and New
Wave styles is still very much present, and at times pushes even beyond
those boundaries. Imagine the sounds of the Cure, Cocteau Twins, The
Chameleons and Slowdive rolled into one. These 10 tracks touch on
a wide variety of sounds and emotions ranging from spacey ethereal
drones to blissful up-tempo dreampop beauty. For fans of the early
out-of-print EP's, "Hide Your Eyes" and "The Soft Attack",
"Drowned in a Sea of Sound" is a must have. It is proof

PS, US Dead Man mine the birth of stoner rock, from the Grateful Dead
to Iron Butterfly, trippy and heavy in qual doses, and now they've
signed to Meteor City... Euphoria is much darker and heavier than
their debut self-titled album while maintaining a thoroughly vintage
vibe. There are bluesy up-tempo rockers alongside melodic folk-pop
masterpieces and an unexpected turn into dark and psyched-out heavy
rock. While their debut Self Titled album made a huge impact on the

PS, US Expanded reissue CD package w/ 24 page booklet. Due to continued
demand for this title and the fact that the initial pressing of 1,500

in an expanded package with re-mixed and re-mastered audio. The audio:
Not content to merely order a re-pressing of the same masters on hand
at the Cd manufacturer, Taylor Deupree set out to create what he calls
the "director's cut" of one of the most important Cds in
his catalog. The idea was to open the now-2-year-old computer files
to re-mix and re-master the tracks. Of course over the course of years
computers change, formats change, and Deupree found himself faced
with missing plug-ins, errored sound files and other oddities that
made working with the files difficult. What first seemed like roadblocks
turned into a mission to work with what was there and re-do what was
not. The result is a "Northern" that will, on the surface,
seem quite similar to the original, however listeners will hear new
sounds, extended endings, shortened endings and most of all, an overall
mix that presents these works with a new clarity and spaciousness.
Mastering in the analog domain has given the work a new found sense
of delicacy and detail. the package: A heavyweight cardboard wallet
with debossed typography on the front cover. Inside are two pockets,
one for the CD and one for a 24-page booklet of photography, credits,

Druids of Stonehenge, The

PS, US "The unearthly, savage, Rolling Stones/Pretty Things-inspired
treatment of R&B classics as interpreted by The Druids of Stonehenge
on Sundazed 10" vinyl is a phenomenon that quite simply has to
be heard to be believed. When frontman David Budge cuts loose on such
familiar '60s staples as 'Who Do You Love,' 'I Put A Spell On You,'
'Pretty Thing' and 'Bald Headed Woman,' it's almost as though he's
being strangled by Bo Diddley's 'cobra snake necktie' with eyes popping,
cartoon-like, out of his skull. The New York-based Druids cut one
album after they'd moved to Los Angeles, but these six early sides,
tracked at famed Nola's Penthouse studios in Manhattan, are truly
the stuff of garage R&B legend!"

Family Underground
Black Hole
PS, US 2007 release. "Family Underground drenched the East Coast
of the USA in molten syrup last year and they toted along a tour CD-R
entitled Black Hole released by the fine folk of Secret Eye. Mega
bummed I didn't get to feel their magic live but I ordered that tour
disc post-haste. Man, when I got it, I was slain. I thought it was
their finest work to date so I had to invoke it on vinyl. I tapped
into the band's communication network and together we figured this
would make a killer double LP, definitely one for the record books.
So The Underground sent me a half hour of unreleased musics to fill
the vinyl sides to fruition. Holy Hannah, was I unprepared for A!
How well the new jams mind-melded with the other tracks. And B --
the superb variation of the entire work with paramount peaks and deep
arcane valleys. Get it and trip!" Limited to 500 copies on black
vinyl with full color gatefold jackets.

Fax
Yo Recuerdo
PS, MEXICO Fax delivers his sixth release, Yo Recuerdo. Upgrading
the sounds of his previous release, Primario, Fax continues the path
into ambient and down tempo electronica. Whereas Primario was marked
by a dark undercurrent of sound, Yo Recuerdo is a brighter affair.
Yo Recuerdo is dreamier, closer to the sounds of Guthrie and Budd,
but retaining the minimal electronic feel Fax is known for. And for
those missing Fax dancier techno moments, there is a remix of one
of the most memorable tracks on the album "Cuarto Para Tres".
Album mastered by Fernando Corona (Murcof) with guest vocals by Florencia
Ruiz and Uriel Villalobos (Perdutto). TRACKLISTING: 1. Intro 2. Cuarto
Para Tres 3. Concreto 4. Cielo Rojo 5. Rota 6. Yo Recuerdo (I Remember)

PS, US For the better part of a decade, Kentucky's Foxhole has sought
to create music that speaks from-and to, and of-the soul. And nowhere
is that pursuit so potent as on their debut full-length album We the

barrage of deft percussion has brought comparisons to instrumental
bands such as Explosions in the Sky, Mogwai, and Do Make Say Think.

Froberg, Tobias
Turn Heads
PS, US Swedish singer-songwriter sensation Tobias Froberg has recently
spent his time hanging out with friends. Not only did he log production
duties the forthcoming offering from Peter Moren (Peter of Peter Bjorn
And John) but he spent some time working on his own, third release
Turn Heads. His new album features a gaggle of his mates including
Peter, Norwegian chanteuse Ane Brun, the heavenly Brit singer songwriter
Kathryn Williams, the troubadour Tietur, Existensminumum and Torbjörn
Zetterberg (Folke). He even made it a family affair, working with
his father, jazz musician Ante Fröberg. Although Froberg invites
his buddies along to create music his albums have his personal fingerprints
all over them. His first two releases, For Elisabeth Wherever She
Is (2004) and Somewhere In the City (2006) are both self produced.
Both records are much loved all over the globe, while Elisabeth was
nominated for a Swedish Indie Grammy.

Goto80
Made On Internet
PS, GERMANY Considering the global distribution of computer technology
for already over 30 years, the Demoscene and the related Chiptunes
music have never really had a high profile. Maybe that's because of
their non-commercial background, or because making obsolete digital
technology the center of cultural production is mostly an insider's
passion. Call it 'Geek-Art for Geeks.' In today's electronic music,
the sounds of Gameboy, C64, and other discarded game hardware have
gained cult status, propelled by an enthusiastic community. A key
character in this permanent dedication to chiptunes is Anders Carlsson
from Sweden. He has been an active member of the demoscene for almost
15 years and known under the name of GOTO80 for almost a decade. Always
driven by the everlasting challenge to compose music for the best
C64 demo. His knowledge of the sonic core of the C64, the legendary
SID-Chip, is awesome. Just as exceptional are his musical intuition
and his stylistic variety, combined with his technical skills. Made
On Internet brings together 11 of his recent works showing the full
scope of his production work.

Take Refuge in Clean Living
PS, US New album, five long songs. 'Take Refuge in Clean Living' sees
Grails pulling back their already-wide lens on multiple sonic horizons.
Opening with a nod to Syd Barret's Pink Floyd (Piper at the Gates
of Dawn) the record begins with morse code and drops into one of the
heaviest slow-burn grooves in the Grails canon. Sounding something
like Hawkwind and Ravi Shankar scoring Bladerunner, it's lysergic
and earthy for Grails in a new way. The rest of the record moves from
blissful Eno-inspired ambience, to epic Morricone rock hymns, to an
unexpected take on a Ventures tune that returns the listener back
to the very beginnings of instrumental rock music. 'Take Refuge' seems
to suggest that Grails can't run out of ideas.

Gregor Samsa
Rest
PS, US In their third full-length album, Gregor Samsa takes a new
approach to composition, both in process & instrumentation. The
result is Rest; nine pieces composed over e-mail during the course
of nine months by key members. In Rest, GS expand on their affinity
for minimal, classical instrumentation mixed with mangled & manipulated
sound through integration of new instruments such as the celesta,
clarinet, classical voice & vibraphone. Along with these new sounds,
guitar has been almost entirely replaced by piano, whose parts were
recorded on a rare Bösendorfer once owned by Philip Glass. These
pieces demonstrate a shift in focus to harmony, restraint & the
use of muted tones, while less interest is taken in the large dynamic
shifts that once carried the weight of many of their compositions.

Hammock
Maybe They Will Sing For Us Tomorrow
PS, US After four well-loved and critically lauded recordings, Hammock
returns with a new full-length, special release, Maybe They Will Sing
for Us Tomorrow, which features eleven new songs and original artwork
by Riceboy Sleeps (Jonsi Birgisson of the Grammy-nominated Sigur Ros
and Alex Somers of Parachutes). At the invitation of Birgisson and
Somers, Hammock gave their first-ever live performance at the after
party celebration of the Riceboy Sleeps overseas debut art exhibition,
held in Hot Springs, AR in August 2007. Maybe They Will Sing for Us
Tomorrow is the studio recording of the original music written and
played by Hammock for the occasion. "Studio performance"
is a more accurate phrase; as the guitars for these songs were recorded
live, just as the band performed them, later rounded out by Matt Slocum's
expansive, emotive cello. This is Hammock reduced to an essence-a
core. There are no intrusions. No beats. No lyrics. There is nothing
to break the spell, or jar the listener out of the moment. "
Maybe They Will Sing for Us Tomorrow" has all of the vulnerability
and spontaneity of a performance, yet all of the rich, cinematic beauty
of a Hammock studio recording. Hammock's self-imposed minimalism is
expertly merged with their hallmark melodic songwriting, resulting
in the most focused, mesmeric and deeply personal album in their catalog
to date. "...music in the spirit of Japanese art-simple by form,
but it's full of complexity in its tone and its timbres." --Bob
Boilen, NPR, All Songs Considered. "Hammock continue their ascent
to godhead status among the drone-rock underground." -All Music
Guide. Tracks: 1. Gold Star Mothers, 2. City in the Dust on My Window,
3. This Kind of Life Keeps Breaking Your Heart, 4. Mono No Aware,
5. Three Sisters, 6. Maybe They Will Sing for Us Tomorrow, 7. Elm,
8. Razorback Drug Town, 9. Eighty-Four Thousand Hymns, 10. We Will

Hayman, Watkins, Trout & Lee
Self-Titled
PS, UK For Fans Of: Hefner, The Wave Pictures, Alan Lomax, Leadbelly,
Townes Van Zandt. 14 dynamite tracks of East London bluegrass featuring
Darren Hayman of Hefner and Dave Tattersall of The Wave Pictures,
including covers of songs by Townes Van Zandt and The Mountain Goats
along with seven band originals. Hayman, Watkins, Trout and Lee are
a country, bluegrass band from East London. They don't sing in American
accents and their songs feature tube trains, Bethnal Green, sick days,
flat lemonade and unmade beds. HWT&L perform weary singalongs;
fragile and flawed ballads that wipe a tear and force you to smile.
Darren Hayman (ex-Hefner) formed the band with Dave Watkins, in 2005,
as an antidote to their 'career' bands. The idea was that this would
be a band with as little ego as possible, with everybody taking vocals,
submitting material, leaving and arriving as they wished. The group
is as much about playing around Darren's kitchen table as it is playing
on any stage. In fact the original idea was even to avoid the notion
of doing records. However when Dave Tattersall (The Wave Pictures)
joined in 2007 with a whole repertoire of blues and country songs,
as well as his own fantastic ballads, it became obvious that they
had something worth preserving. In the spirit of Big Pink, the Basement
Tapes and the first McCartney album, it was decided to record the
album in two days at Darren's house, with a bunch of battered microphones,
a fresh pot of tea, and some fruitcake. The resultant record features
seven band originals (four written by Darren and two by Dave Tattersall)
alongside covers of songs by Townes Van Zandt and The Mountain Goats
and smattering of traditional numbers. Hayman, Watkins, Trout and
Lee let you peer though the cracks of their kitchen, and hit nearly
all the right notes in the process. Let them give you a warm handshake.

Idle Tigers
The Spirit Salon
PS, US The debut album by Idle Tigers: Idle Tigers is Ross Hawkins.
Momus writes, "Hawkins seems to be a young man suffused with
delicate, carefully-structured lust, a neo-Victorian from Bradford,
England who's relocated -- possibly for the purpose of study -- to
Toronto, Canada. The world of his songs, though, has stayed rooted
in England, or rather, the imaginary, filtered England that rises
up in the spirit of an exile, replacing the reality with something
more mythical. Here Lewis Carroll meets Brian Eno, and music hall
meets the avant-garde. Listening to [the song] "The Shadow Falls
Across The Fridge, Frank" I was reminded of my first listens
to Toog or The Divine Comedy (if they'd listened to a lot more Pierre
Schaeffer) or, much further back, The Passage. These songs seemed
to come from the odd place where the breezy meets the zany, and it's
there we can have adventures in wonderland. "Unlace Me Behind
The Hedge" is a touching, absurd account of a sexual encounter
which somehow reminds me of Artery's mysterious song "Into the
Garden" (a Peel favorite in the 80s, it concerns sibling sex).
"I reckon that sex is just special effects," the fey-voiced
Hawkins sings against piano arpeggios, "a rite, a performance
by the fireworks department". His song "Jonah" could
almost be something off my own first album, Circus Maximus."
High praise indeed! Get it while it's hot.

Monochrome Set
The Independent Singles Collection
PS, UK Suave; debonair; sophisticated. Haughty, perhaps, for those
who favor the pejorative. Aristocratic in more than one sense, classy
in at least as many. The Monochrome Set were effortlessly inventive,
literate, poised and immaculate of tuneage, possessed of an internal
dialogue as a band that allowed them to surf their own narrative.
They were just unlike anything else, in layman s terms. Instead, their
sound harked back to a golden era of British pop songwriters. But
there was nothing retrogressive about their endeavors. Instead they
wrote songs that recreated the drama and promise of a Pearl &
Dean interval theme, veering from lullaby to mambo to harmonic pop,
accompanied by lush melodies and irresistibly playful lyrics that
embraced morbidity at one extreme, and pitch-perfect satire at another.
Because they could. Brand new release of Monochrome Set's complete
independent singles collection including b-sides and rare tracks Norman
Cook aka Fatboy Slim, a long-term fan of the band, has recorded a
cover of He's Frank with guest vocals by Iggy Pop and indeed this

Nadadora
La Química Que Nos Une
PS, SPAIN A mini CD featuring a new song ("Septiembre no está
tan lejos") the video of their song "El bosque" (by
77Pandas), and four extraordinary remixes of songs from their second
album, "Hablaremos del Miedo, made by some of the most relevant
artists of the Spanish indie scene. These very personal reworking
of their songs include remixes by Jaime Cristóbal (Souvenir),
who has remixed "Después de todo", Dorian ("El
bosque"), Javier Standard ("A=B=C") and Homeboy dj
("La Forma"). But it's not just a remixes CD - "Septiembre
no está tan lejos" is a new song which shows the way of
things to come, as the new songs that Gonzalo Abalo is writing for
the band will probably feature more electronic arrangements in the
future, which will enrich the sound of the band both on record and
live. Connoisseurs of the band won't be surprised to find echoes of
The Field Mice, New Order, Trembling Blue Stars or The Radio Dept.
in these new songs. "Evelyn Ashford", featured on the compilation
"Juegos Olímpicos" already showed this new sound,
and "Septiembre no está tan lejos", featured on this
mini-CD goes a bit further on, while retaining the main features of
the Nadadora sound at the same time, especially the double vocals
by Sara and Gonzalo, their brilliant choruses and melancholic moods.
All in all, here's a record with a renewed point of view of Nadadora's
songs, and aimed at the dance floor, topped by an amazing video for
the song "El Bosque" directed by Spanish ace company 77Pandas.
Luis Escalante, again, is responsible for the "La química
que nos une" artwork, and Arturo Vaquero, another usual suspect
of Nadadora's career, has been in charge of the mastering in his Abrigueiro
Studios in Friol, Lugo (Spain).

New Age
All Around
PS, GERMANY One of the most eye-opening LP archival issues of 2007
is now also available on CD, with bonus tracks. Also including members
Mark Levinson and Bruce Langhorne. "This is what can be called
one of the major sensations in the raga influenced psychedelic/acid
folk field. Also some of the earliest recordings in this genre and
hitherto unreleased. After the release of the Light of Day album in
1966 the now legendary Pat Kilroy and Susan Graubard went on with
playing and creating music together. What you hear on this album is
what they recorded for Warner Brothers in the summer of 1967, a true
groundbreaking adventure of the highest order. They expanded in the
direction they started in 1966 and the result is far beyond and superior
to everything I heard from that time period before in this musical
style except for Tim Buckley. No wonder that it didn't come out at
that time because those recordings were for sure far too adventurous
for Warner Brothers and also for almost other leading music companies
at the time. Incredible -- and I mean INCREDIBLE raga influenced psychedelic/acid
folk with some of the best songwriting I know of with monstrous lyrics
and deep lead vocals. Also a wide range of instruments were played
like incredible raga-esque acoustic guitar, electric bass, Spanish
cowbells, bell tree, silver flute, bamboo flutes, viola, tamboura,
conga drums, tables, acoustic and electric bass and tambourine. Pat
Kilroy sadly died of Hodgkin's disease in December of 1967 at a very
young age. If this record had a proper release at the time, it would
be a major classic and a milestone today in the psychedelic history
book. This CD release contains six superb never before released bonus
tracks recorded at Warner Brothers Studios and KPFA-FM radio station
during 1967. Be ready for an incredible musical trip along with an
amazing, long and very intense story behind."

juxtaposing light, catchy melodies with lyrics that subtly lament
modern life and society. The icing on the cake comes from the background
harmonies provided by Erica Corniel, Alissa Hacker, and Jessica Gonyea;
the end result resembles a dance party as hosted by Arcade Fire. While
obviously indebted to these contemporaries, however, the Midwestern
roots of Office give A Night at the Ritz a warm, easy, unpretentious
feel that could make it more inviting -- and possibly appealing --
to casual club-goers and indie rock fans alike. Overall, the band's
sound is sweet, if not terribly deep -- even breakup ballad "+/-
Fairytale" is upbeat enough musically that it's easy to miss
the meaning of the lyrics. Their heavy reliance on prominent backbeats
and danceable grooves becomes noticeably repetitive by the middle
of the album, a problem that is remedied by three songs that are mysteriously
relegated to the album's end. "Paralyzed Prince" and "Dominoes"
both feature tight vocal harmonies and vaudeville-tinged piano that
call to mind Mika, Duke Special, and even shades of Queen. Add the
breezy and refreshing closer "Suburban Perfume" to the equation
and it seems that Office has more to say, but may be hesitant to give
too much of the game away too early -- or maybe they're simply hinting
at their potential scope. ~ Katherine Fulton, All Music Guide

Pia Fraus
After Summer
PS, US Clairecords is extremely proud to present Pia Fraus' new album
"After Summer". After 5 long years, we welcome the Estonian
pop geniuses back to the Clairecords label with open arms. "After
Summer" is produced by legendary Glaswegian Norman Blake (Teenage
Fanclub, BMX Bandits, The Pastels etc). Pia Fraus and Norman Blake
kept file transfer programs busy for months to exchange soundfiles;
this relationship has created something magical. "After Summer"
is the 4th proper album from the Pias, and quite possibly their best
album to date. No wonder, if your idol takes producer's chair! The
album also features some guest musicians: Estonian electronica stars
Galaktlan and Pastacas guest on two of the album's tracks. Moreover,
"After Summer" has the well-known and well-loved Pia Fraus
sound, quality songwriting, a lot of studio tricks and layers of guitars,
synths, and boy/girl vocals. This album will bring huge grins to the
mouths of Pia Fraus fans, yet at the same time it is a perfect introduction
to Pia Fraus for the uninitiated. For fans of My Bloody Valentine,
Stereolab, Chicago Underground Quartet, The Pastels, The Beatles,
and - of course - Pia Fraus!

Pump Kinn & Don/Brian Miller & Kevin Shields
Virgin Passwords
PS, US So Cal noise Nor Cal. Recorded at the end of nearly 9 months
of touring, Virgin Passwords reflects a long evolution in sound and
concept for Brian Miller & Kevin Shields. A combination of mechanical
grindings and digital sweeps, mortal shovings and sudden transportations
into secret chambers hold the secrets of the Virgins themselves. The
Virgins that control the universe. The mafia of the cosmos. Beyond
the cliched metaphor of purity and straight to literally not having
sex at all. Because a Brian Miller & Kevin Shields performance
proves that a noise show can be (hyper)active, crowd-engaging and
knock everything to the floor without invoking angst and self-loathing.
In other words, without hate-fucking everyone. Virgins. Pump Kinn

these duos of destruction." Limited to 300 copies with beautiful

Sun Paulo
Electric Wisdom Sound System Bitter Sweet
PS, UK Mating rock guitar with electronic dance dance rhythms, Japan's
The Sun Paulo can only be described as a musical roller-coaster, careering
through impossibly-convoluted twists, turns and dazzling displays
of kinetic virtuosity shot with rampant, crazed energy. Although musical
reference points aren't hard to spot, the freewheeling, quite natural
way they're gobbled up and spewed back out at often blinding speed
makes for a listening experience quite unlike anything else on the
planet. Leading the charge is guitarist and founder member Taiji Sato.
He started the project in 2000 with DJ Really? who left in 2002 to
be replaced by renowned session players Toshiyuki Mori on keyboards
and drummer Takashi Numazawa. They've since played a host of major
festivals, released their debut album After the Eclipse, soundtracked
the movie Kalalu and started Tokyo's regular Wisdom parties in 2004
collaborating with noted DJs including Ken Ishii, Tsyoshi and Hiroshi
Kawanabe. Electric Wisdom Sound System can switch gear several times
during the course of one track, like "But We Want More",
which eventually settles into a mighty slavering funk beast, or, even
more extreme, the three part "Electric Western", which manages
to straddle jazz, beatific piano-string ambience, belting techno and
what sounds like the Mahavishnu Orchestra dry-humping System 7 at
the Paradise Garage. Shards of 70s groups like Focus, the Allman Brothers,
Santana and the Mothers flash past in what sometimes resembles an
aural meteor storm, often colliding with 21st century electronica,
all climaxing with an outrageous version of Burt Bacharach's "Close
To You" which will carry you off to a higher plane altogether.
This album is launch-pad, take-off and best part of one of the strangest
trips anyone has had the skill or plain nerve to attempt in recent
years. Tracklist 1...i against a speeeeed! 2...~but we want more 3...~another

Favourite Places
PS, UK Favourite Places brings together field and compositional recordings
depicting places of importance and significance within the lives of
contemporary artists. Features Leafcutter John, Taylor Deupree, RF,
Biosphere, Dot Tape Dot, Claudia, John Kannenberg, Aaron Ximm, Build
& Nomad Palace). There are places in this world we return to time
after time because they hold something precious that nurtures us.
Favourite Places is about sharing a bit of what has been found with
others. Each artist was invited to participate in the project by making
a field recording capturing the essence of the place. This was followed
by an audio composition designed to portray their subjective perspective
of the place. The bringing together of both the field and compositional
recordings became a way of documenting the existence and importance
of specific places within the world. In essence Favourite Places is
a dynamic audio diary. The aim has been to enable a creative interaction
between external and internal realities. It is hoped that the pieces
will inspire the audience to become increasingly active listeners
whilst experiencing their own favourite places. The world is always
changing for better and for worse. Favourite Places is a snap shot
amongst this movement aiming to capture something beautiful. Each
individual CD features a unique location dot matrix representing the
10 tracks on the album. These hand made designs bring a unique design
aesthetic to the product package. The CD also contains a fold-out

favourite place. Design & art direction turned on its head by

Friends EP
PS, US 4 brand new songs plus a remix of "Friends", none
of which appeared on the new full length Ween album just released
last fall. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "What these five songs have in common
is that they're lighter on their feet than the Quebec material, and
it reconnects Ween to the devilish humor of their best '90s work,
along with the excellent songwriting that's always been their backbone.
If they can keep this up for a full album, they'll have a fine comeback
on their hands, but the Friends EP should be enjoyed on its own for
its bright blast of song, especially since none of the tunes will
be available on La Cucuracha (with the exception of "Friends,"

Hesperian Puisto (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 24TH)
PS, SWEDEN It really is time for Action Biker's first solo album!
It has now been six years since she emerged as an artist doing fun
and popular live shows and releasing CD-R's in the indie pop scene
of Gothenburg, Sweden, which included people like Jens Lekman and
The Honeydrips. Since then, Sarah Nyberg Pergament has been involved
in other projects, such as Flow Flux Clan, Kissing Mirrors and The
Dreamers, whose record "Day For Night" has received great
acclaim from different places around the world. Over the years, Sarah
has also performed lots of Action Biker shows (some, as an opening
act for Le Tigre and The Embassy), contributed to recordings with
Lars Blek (The Field), Differnet and The Honeydrips, and all this
time, new recordings with Action Biker have popped up on compilations
and singles. In brief, when "Hesperian Puisto" finally is
released, it means the début of someone with a lot of experienceŠ
The record is named after the Hesperian park in Helsinki, Finland,
where Sarah lived for a while. She describes her music as baroque
on synthesizers. It is pop music built on complex naivety - altogether
very accessible music with distinct vocals and a crispy, sweet, analogue
sound. Two great-looking videos are also included on the CD. References

ASS (Andreas Soderstrom Solo)
My Get Up And Go Just Got Up And Went (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 27TH)
PS, UK Very limited! Peering out between the mass of strings, hanging
like vines, there must have been a spark of childish curiosity. From
the giddy playfulness of youth all the way to the folk hinterland,
Andreas Soderstrom has been surrounded by instruments, exposed to
the sounds of his father's bazouki factory - an extraordinary mélange
of clattering noise and metallic melody. That natural inquisitiveness
has obviously paid off, and it surely can't be a coincidence that
a career in music beckoned. Trading under the pseudonym Ass - it stands
for Andreas Soderstrom Solo - for more than a decade he has been the
hitherto unknown man of Swedish pop, having played with the likes
of electro-pop priestess Jenny Wilson, digital folk stalwarts Tape,
offbeat folk-pop minstrel Blood Music, and Taken By Trees, the latest
incarnation of former Concretes singer Victoria Bergsman. All that
will change with the release of 'My Get Up and Go Just Got Up and
Went', the second full-length album from Soderstrom under his Ass
moniker. Soderstrom plays all of the instruments found on this quietly
intoxicating 10-track record, the follow-up to his astonishingly assured,
eponymous debut - both released on Headspin Recordings. It finds him
hacking through the folk undergrowth, his fluid dynamic underpinning
a stark melancholy that simmers throughout. It's a real treat, and
a chance to hear the whispered charm of a subtly disarming performer.

Brother Kite, The/Plumerai
Split (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 10TH)
PS, US Track Listing: Plumerai "Vacant Eyes". The Brother
Kite "We Can Never Be Friends". LIMITED to 500 copies. Clear
vinyl in see-thru package. An idea hatched during the recording of
Plumerai's "Without Number" CD out on Silber Records. The
thought was to strip away the pedals and even electricity and release
a record that would simultaneously draw upon the band's ability to
evoke emotions and utilize one of the band's noted strengths; the
intimacy and power of Elizabeth Ezell's voice. After consideration
they sought out The Brother Kite to record a track for the flipside.
A Clairecords staple and another top-notch New England band known
for their shoegaze influences, they seemed like a perfect match for
the concept of stripping down their sound and writing an acoustic
track.. Plumerai's "Vacant Eyes" relies more heavily on
orchestration and layering of instruments such as acoustic guitar,
reed organ, violin (arranged and performed by Clara Kebabian) and
bells to accompany Ezell. While The Brother Kite's "We Can Never
Be Friends" is a more basic track with acoustic guitars and a
catchy vocal melody carrying the song. This stunning and beautiful
record comes on coke bottle-clear vinyl and is limited to 500 copies.

Following many releases over the past 7 years on a wide variety of
electronic labels now comes his anticipated debut album for Psychonavigation

to the thickness of the songs on "In The Vines", here the
songs are stripped bare and presented by new voices that further reveal
the lyrical beauty of Raposa's songwriting. It is equal parts home

Clientele, The
That Night, A Forest Grew (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 27TH)
PS, SPAIN This is the third, and last, of a trilogy of E.P.s the Clientele
have recorded for Acuarela. They have always used the Acuarela E.P.s
as a way to stretch out between albums, to create a through-the-looking-glass
version of the band that shadows the better-known history of their
albums. 'Ariadne' experimented with drones and minimalism; 'The Lost
Weekend' stretched the foggy sound of their debut to epic proportions.
In contrast "That Night, a Forest Grew' is the most commercial
and -shockingly- danceable thing they've ever recorded. Part Bacharach,
part Television, part Orange Juice, the E.P. shares the pristine clarity,
light and shade of 'God Save the Clientele', but adds a new element
of summer pop perfection. This is The Clientele as a hazily remembered
1970s cartoon series, all distanced off-key colors; imaginary summer
hits, radio waves beamed in from a dream-discotheque.

Collections Of Colonies Of Bees
Six Guitars (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 20TH)
PS, US COLLECTIONS OF COLONIES OF BEES generated quite the (forgive
us) buzz, following the January release of their CD "Birds",
and deservedly so. Their sound is expansive, vast, and billowing;
full of ringing guitars, soaring in the best traditions of the Chatham/Branca
standoff; meanwhile, beneath the clouds sprawl dewy meadows of gently
rolling electronica. "Six Guitars" is just what its title
states, yet so much more. Wildly versatile drummer Jon Mueller follows
the rules by hammering on an electric guitar with mallets, enhancing
the Steve Reichian vibe (compare this with Mueller's face-melting
solo onslaught Metals, also released in January). The band sparkles
accordingly, lifting to a dazzling climax. It's epic minimalism in
exquisite registration, and the perfect selection to introduce the
TABLE OF THE ELEMENTS GUITAR SERIES (fans will be happy to hear that
Mueller is on deck with a solo contribution to the series as well).
Beyond the music, there's the similarly spectacular packaging. It's
a one-sided, 12-inch LP, PRESSED ON CLEAR VINYL; the REVERSE IS LASER
ETCHED with an original illustration by acclaimed UK artist Savage
Pencil, whose credits include album art for The Fall, Big Black, and
Sonic Youth. It's a LIMITED-EDITION PRESSING, so get it while you
can - disks from the label's original Guitar Series in 1993/1994 are
now some of Collectorville's must coveted treasures.

Craig, Leighton
11 Easy Pieces (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 27TH)
PS, AUSTRALIA Since 1995, Brisbane resident Leighton Craig has etched
out a varied musical existence, from solo keyboard studies to an extensive
body of collaborative work. His solo works, which span delicate ambient
keyboard excursions through to site-specific live documents and most
recently song-based explorations, have mapped out a focus of tone,
duration and 'situations' for sound. On 11 Easy Pieces, his first
widely available solo LP, Craig offers an intimate yet robust collection
of works recorded on an array of cheap analogue keyboards, including
his instrument of choice the Casio MT40. Recorded to cassette at the
kitchen table between 2003-04, these recordings have been lovingly
toasted by valve tubes during mastering to reveal not only a true
sense of analog adventurousness inherent to Craig's mode of operation,
but also his ability to unveil a rare tonal richness from his instruments.
Leighton Craig casts out an audio net and collects together an essential
haul of tonal gradients, phased rhythm and collapsed chordal interplays.
11 Easy Pieces (and two somewhat less 'easy' works), is a warm collection
of distorted hymnals and blurred geometry - all of them visionary
in their purity and timbral sensibilities. "This is more than
Australian Music - this is Australia the musician." Sean Rabin,
The Australian "an organic exorcism of the trees...the music
of the earth...." Brad Rose, Foxy Digitalis. On Organ Notes "hazy
minimal organ tones ... feel good mind-body static. Turn up loud and
let it float." Eddie Flowers, Slippytown.

Desolation Wilderness
Until Forever (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 20TH)
PS, US DESOLATION WILDERNESS is the primary musical project of Nicolaas
Zwart. "Until Forever" was written, played, and recorded
by Nic in Summer of 2007, at DUB NARCOTIC STUDIO in Olympia, Washington;
during the late night sessions for his self- released full-length
album "Hey Someone". Nic played almost all the instruments
including the vibraphone, clarinet, glockenspiel, guitar, computer,
and synthesizer. On "4/4 Love Song" he enlisted his friends
Andrew Dorsett and Adam Oelsner to play Hammond Organ and Accordion,
respectively. "Goodbye Summer Girl" is the end of a story.
Saying a sudden goodbye to someone new to you who you were in love
with, and seeing her disappear out of the rear view mirror of your
car as you drive away; getting lost in the shimmering heat of a California
summer day. "Gloria" and "4/4 Love Song" have
no words, but they capture a mood you can get when watching fireworks
over a lake during twilight on the Fourth of July: everything you
see and do is imbued with the magic of fate and destiny.

Durutti Column
Sunlight to Blue... Blue to Blackness (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 24TH)
PS, UK "Sunlight to blue ... Blue to blackness" - This was
one of the more upbeat title suggestions for the very bare, back to
basics, reflective new album from The Durutti Column. Vini Reilly
has recorded under the name The Durutti Column since 1978 and has
a rich portfolio of work, releasing over 15 albums in this time, but
Reilly has been through some dark times the past year. In a conscious
response to his last two polished and studio based releases he has
created some sparse, simply beautiful 'sketches' as he once called
them, more reminiscent of his work from the early eighties. Many of
the pieces are simply instrumentals played on his Juan Montero flamenco
guitar, and he returns to 'Without Mercy' for the last track 'Grief'
and reinvents 'Never Known' from LC. This release also sees the debut
of a talented young pianist and singer, Poppy Morgan, who co-wrote
the melancholy Ananda as a duet with what Reilly dryly calls 'intrusive
guitar'. For the uninitiated, Vini was the first artist signed to
Manchester's influential Factory Records, co-wrote and played on Morrissey's
first solo album 'Viva Hate', and was heavily featured in the film
about Manchester music culture, '24 Hour Party People'. Ever critical
of Vini's voice, but ever a fierce champion of his talent, the late
Tony Wilson would surely appreciate this return of The Durutti Column.

Freedom Wind (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 20TH)
PS, US Great indie rock bands have long made a habit of recasting
the music of our parents' youth. Turn on Dr. Dog, Olivia Tremor Control,
or the Black Angels for just a few examples of bands who make glorious
new music in classic molds. Now take the idea a step further. Take
the homage just far enough that you can imagine yourself experiencing,
say, THE BEACH BOYS in their prime, but with fresh songs not tempered
by a generation of Sweatin' to the Oldies. This is elation without
irony. This is THE EXPLORERS CLUB'S debut album, "Freedom Wind."
The Beach Boys are the obvious touchstone, but dig a bit deeper and
you'll hear flourishes of Paul McCartney, the Byrds, Emitt Rhodes,
ELO and doo-wop. Embracing a pop blueprint from a time when great
songs were played on the radio and everybody loved them all, the Explorers
Club has recorded the sweetest pop record you are likely to hear this
year. The Explorers Club are doing for the summer beach song what
Amy Winehouse has done for R&B or Sharon Jones for funk and soul,
what Antibalas have done for Afro-beat. They're reclaiming the classics
as their own, injecting them with life, and making music that that
transcends any era. This is how pop music is supposed to sound. Prepare

Fantasy Bar
Friday Afternoon Car (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 27TH)
PS, SPAIN Kieran, Diego, Jordi and Rubén used to be part of
Migala, probably one of the best Spanish bands ever. It's something
they won't try to hide. Now they are Fantasy Bar, whose debut album,
Friday Afternoon Car, takes their music -and influences ranging from
American Music Club to Nick Drake, Arab Strap to Neil Young...- into
enchanting new territories. Friday Afternoon Car is an album of nostalgia
and yearning for a brighter dawn; of harshness and tender feeling;
of hopes and of fears. Its 14 stately, slow-paced rock songs are suffused
with the beauty that lies just beneath the surface of existence. The
careworn yet compassionate vocals of Scottish songwriter Kieran Stephen
(ex-bassist with Los Planetas and Migala, bass guitar on El Hijo's
album "Las otras vidas", live musician with QZIOS) speak
of the emotions these four friends know so well: the persistence of
memories; friendship and wasted love; the knowledge, throughout it
all, that the good times can prevail. It's there from the first moments
of "Spiders", which opens Friday Afternoon Car: the story
of a bad dream called solitude, wrapped in gentle guitars and upbeat
but delicate drums. The album was recorded at Rock Soul Studios in
Madrid with the assistance of Carlos Torero, and features keyboards
and guitar by Abel Hernández (El Hijo, former singer and guitarist
of Migala) and electric guitar by Chris Bathgate (Sans Trauma, ex-Ganger,
who also used to play bass with Arab Strap). It takes its name from
an old British phrase that alludes to the belief that car-factory
workers lose interest toward the end of the week: as the brief liberation
of the weekend looms, everyday cares cease to matter. Friday Afternoon
Car invites the listener to enter the universe of these songs: to
discover a place to reflect and, above all, to feel. Fantasy Bar are:
Kieran Stephen (vocals, guitars, bass), Diego Yturriga (keyboards,
accordion and melodica), Jordi Sancho (bass, fender rhodes) and Rubén
Moreno (drums).

PS, US This reacquaints us w/all caps worthy rockergirls KIM GORDON
(SONIC YOUTH), JULIE CAFRITZ (PUSSY GALORE) & YOSHIMI (BOREDOMS).
On the disc, they're collapsed into the present. And it is our present
that is most effected by songs like "Erected Girl," which
reminds one of bossa nova rhythms run through a Kosher meat grinder.
And then there's "Free Kitten on the Mountain," which amounts
to a travelogue of sorts--but through a Lord Buckley-like subconscious
mind. IMPOSE MAGAZINE: "Holy sh!t, this is good. Are you surprised?
Free Kitten is Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth) and Julie Cafritz (Pussy Galore)
on guitar/vocals and Yoshimi-P (Boredoms) on percussion... After eleven
years since their last full-length release, Free Kitten is more of
a project then a band, but their upcoming Inherit holds true to a
dirty 90s indie angst that seem lost to the current cultivated landscape
of indie artists making pop music. In that sense these tracks manage
to be both familiar and refreshing: Free Kitten aren't reinventing
what they already did 15 years ago, but they're adding beautiful music
to the heap of what's good about indie rock."

The Sound Of Revolution 1968-69 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 20TH)

and 69 Tropicalia albums, Frevo Rasgado and Cerebro Electronico; joyous,
extraordinarily inventive pop music made against a background of terrible
political unrest in Brazil and in the shadow of both imprisonment
and eventually exile both for Gil and his friend Caetano Veloso. The
1968 album is electrified by the meteoric Os Mutantes and both sets
arranged by Rogerio Duprat who contributes a range of totally original
textures and orchestration much as George Martin did with Strawberry
Fields and Sgt Pepper. Suffice to say, this combination of precocious
talent achieves a magical and historically important result. Tropicalia-Os

Beautiful Lie (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 3RD)
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Beautiful Lie is easily one of his most
accessible and listenable efforts. Yes, the hallmarks of his tortured
singer/songwriter status are still in place, as flagrant strings,
grandiose arrangements, and rampant-but-quality peer-mimicry rule
these 14 tracks. But even though his lyrics are sometimes overbearingly
dark and too many vampire metaphors abound, the music and songwriting
compare favorably to contemporary indie-centric, raspy-voiced artists
like Beck, the Eels, Sparklehorse, and Tom Waits. Harcourt dabbles
in many genres here, from acoustic folk to '70s style pop ballads
to rootsy psychedelia to experimental lounge, all the while rooting
the music's emotion in melodic piano... Beautiful Lie is an invigorating
and frequently gorgeous affair, essential for old fans and a good
place to start for newcomers."

The Fidelity Wars (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 3RD)
PS, UK 1999 was a special year for Hefner. The original Fidelity Wars
reached number one in the independent album charts, with its accompanying
single, cult favourite Hymn for the Cigarettes securing them the number
one place in the independent single charts. It was also the year that
saw Hefner working hard for John Peel, recording three sessions for
his show and having five entries in the Festive Fifty for '99. They
reached numbers two and three in the chart, only beaten to the number
one spot by the Cuban Boys! Fidelity Wars saw Hefner coming of age;
the rawness of songwriter Darren Hayman's earlier music and lyrics
developing into a more intelligent, observational style. Hymn for
the Alcohol, tells the tale of two alcoholics falling out of love,
accompanied by the sweet pedal steel of new member Jack Hayter. The
Weight of the Stars has the narrator memorising the contents of a
roll of camera film, which was lost on a one-night stand. Don't Flake
Out On laments upon the lost friends of our early twenties, accompanied
by the broken voice of ex-Raincoat Gina Birch and brass section. This
re-release of Fidelity Wars contains the original album plus an extra
29 rare and unreleased tracks including deleted EPs, b-sides, and

multitudinous beast known as Kemialliset Ystävät (Fonal
Records), a part-time member of Avarus and Islaja and records solo
as Tomutonttu (Ultra Exzema, Beta-Lactam Ring Records) with a new
album coming out on Dekorder this year (hopefully). Hirvonen is best-known
under his Uton monicker with two LP's on Dekorder and a stream of
releases on Last Visible Dog, Digitalis, Ruralfauna, Jewelled Antler,
Pseudo Arcana and his own Ikuisuus label. While most one-off meetings
between so-called experimental and improvising musicians often sound
like bad excuses for a few beers and endless jams this is quite the
opposite - a heavy weight championship finale of two likeminded whizkids
cross-fertilizing each other with idea after idea, leading to some
of the weirdest and quixotic recordings you will have heard of the
two. Everything you loved about Kemialliset Ystävät, Uton
and Tomutonttu is contained in Hevoset.....and more. Rural psychedelia,
out-of-tune plucked and strummed strings, overloaded organs and effect
pedals, Jani Hirvonen's sweet wordless vocals, ecstatic improvised
drone collages, bells, backward loops, jungle percussion and tons
of unidentifiable sounds and noises shaped into tight 4 - 6 minute
tracks. Extracts from a Foxy Digitalis review by Brad Rose: "This
is the music of people removed from civilization. It's like this is
some kind of ancient artifact. It grinds on your skull, but feels
so right. (Š) There are moments when the things that make Kemialliset
Ystävät and Uton great on their own come together in forested
harmony. In particular, on side A when Anderzén is droning
away on a keyboard and Uton is massaging your spinal cord with masochistic
feedback scrawl - it's hypnotic. These two artists are in a trance
here, channeling the sounds in their head. It's so fucking good. (Š.)This
is definitely a case where the sum is greater than the parts. Anderzén
and Uton are in top form here and fans of either solo project will
chew this up and consume it for months."

Hosaka, Akane
Niko Niko Denki Muzic (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 10TH)
PS, FRANCE With her lunging rhythms and deliciously retro melodies,
Akane Hosaka catapults us into a world of gleeful wallabies and drummer-boy
monkeys. Her discovery of music came through song, and only later
led to instrumental experimentation. References to her early influences,
the 60s and 70s precursors of electropop are deliberate: there for
all to see. Raymond Scott, Perrey & Kingsley or Yellow Magic Orchestra.
Nevertheless her true inspiration is from the visual world and lies
in graphic forms and architectural fantasy: Keiji Ito, Archigram or
Bruno Munari. For her, these images evoke music that she then sets
about transcribing. Naturally reserved, she's a perfectionist in her
work. Seeing her in the studio is like watching a blacksmith in the
smithy, as she bends her music into the required shapes. Her compositions
are like pastel-colored soap bubbles in extra-bright Super 8.

Free Gold! (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 20TH)
PS, US In 2006, several members of the INDIAN JEWELRY songwriting
and performance team found the bitch of fame licking them on the hand.
Blinded by vanity, easy fame, self love, and the internet, they went
into an early retirement. "Free Gold!" is Indian Jewelry's
first full-length in almost two years. It is also their most scathing
with dirty hooks, shape shifting grooves, and a lot of attitude. "Free

Isol/Zypce
Sima (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 10TH)
PS, US Digipak with 16 page booklet featuring the artist's illustrations.
Isol and Zypce present Sima, their latest collaboration. Isol: singer,
composer, ex-vocalist of the electronic pop band Entre Ríos,
singer with the baroque group The Excuse and member of the synthpop
American band Alsace Lorraine. She's also an internationally renowned
illustrator of books and printed media. For the first time, she composes
the melodies in the songs and writes their lyrics on this new record.
Zypce: musician, composer. In 1994 he released his CD Nuevo Muerto
(New Dead) on which he and his ensemble play his own works of contemporary
classical music tainted with industrial reminiscences, although these
categories are in fact very dubious labels. He has also composed music
for the film, dance and theatre in Argentina and abroad and has performed
his experimental compositions with pianist Adriana de los Santos,
among others in concert. He builds his own musical instruments and
has an extremely elaborate approach to the stage factor. On this CD
he composes and arranges the songs by being clearly faithful to his
peculiar aesthetics though approaching a pop song format, always with
very experimental results. Isol and Zypce are siblings, born and raised
in Buenos Aires, Argentina. About Sima: 11 tracks / Voice: Isol /
Instrumental arrangements: Zypce / Lyrics: Isol / Music: Isol - Zypce
(except "La primera vez" and "Vos me llamás",
by Dani Umpi - Adrián Soiza) / Artistic production: Zypce (in
"Vos me llamás": Zypce-Cecinini) / Mastering: Nicolás
Cecinini. Sima: f. abyss, precipice, crag, depth, chasm.

PS, US This is a debut album containing ten songs, but really it is
a cinematic escapade into the mind of a singular individual, JEREMY
JAY. "A Place Where We Could Go" is a statement of fiction

of life without the people and things that pull down the corners;
create your own world. This universe may have a fairy tale look; it
may be illuminated by streetlight. But it will definitely be a safe
haven for the exploration of dreams. Think vast landscapes of reverberating

PS, US Sixth album for Minneapolis singer-songwriter & debut on
Jack Johnson's Brushfire Records. Coming off his 2006 majorlabel bow,
Boneclouds, for Modest Mouse leader Isaac Brock's Epic-distributed
Glacial Pace label, Jennings retreated to a studio in the woods, where
he set himself up with a laptop and two microphones. The title comes
from his son talking about where he came from before he was born,
"Ya know dad, when I was in the Ever?' It continues his spiritual
journey, informed by his love of influences like Leadbelly, Mississippi
John Hurt, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash's American recordings and Led
Zeppelin, his favorite band of all time. "I just wanted to make
sure it's not re-enacted music," he says. "I have no use
for being a retro artist. I want to understand my past and come from
something." "Every time I hear a Mason Jennings album it
changes the way I see the world around me," says Jack.

Judys, The
Moo [re-issue] (DELAYED, PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 2008)
PS, US The original 'Moo' album finally re-issued on CD for the first
time! CD sports seven bonus tracks, mainman David Bean's "Modomusic"
EP. Released almost four years to the day after Washarama and following
an eighteen month hiatus, The Judy's Moo album has a slightly more
progressive sound: richer production values, fuller arrangements and
thicker harmonies. As the band returned to the stage in 1985, this
was the album that showed the band's maturity and development as songwriters
and musicians. The twelve songs on Moo, laced with solid-state irony,
well-placed cynicism and standard issue Judys' wit, show the band
at the peak of their creativity and acted as a springboard for their
live extravaganzas. The album was released with The Moo Tour - a month
of live performances across the state which included giant cereal
boxes, moving conveyer belts of milk cartons, and a dancing cow while
the band donned milkman uniforms. Critically acclaimed and fan-revered,
The Moo Album continues to be a milestone in Texas pop music.

Judys, The
Land Of Plenty [re-issue] (DELAYED, PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 2008)
PS, US First ever official release for The Judys last album, recorded
but never released! In 1990, The Judy's set out to record a new album
with a new Judy's sound. Featuring the lineup that had been established
over a number of years the band, including Barbara Donaho (keyboards/guitars),
Lee Malone (bass), and Darwin Keys (drums), set out to explore new
horizons musically and thematically. Land of Plenty injected multi-layered
keyboards and guitars, stacked vocals, a gospel choir, and even a
bit of banjo into the band's palatte and sought to realize Bean's
vision of a new Americana musical landscape. Broad in its scope and
daring in its expansion of the band's definition of itself, Land of
Plenty was shelved when the group disbanded before the CD's release.
While a handful of copies have been given out, this is first time
this long sought-after project has been available to the general public.

July Skies
The Weather Clock (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 20TH)
PS, UK July Skies is the musical project of Antony Harding from Birmingham
UK, assisted by members of the band Epic45 (Antony worked on their
2006 album May Your Heart Be The Map) who have both previously received
airplay from the late John Peel and Rob Da Bank of BBC Radio 1 and
also by Verity Sharp of BBC Radio 3. Both bands are part of the truly
independent UK label collective Make Mine Music, who are heading towards
their 50th release in autumn 2008. The Weather Clock is July Skies
4th album and the follow up to their critically acclaimed 2004 album
The English Cold. Musically, think The Durutti Column, the sensitivity
of 80's indie bands like The House of Love, the guitar work of Maurice
Deebank (Felt) or Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins), Harold Budd, or even
a modern reference to British Sea Power if they 'didn't like rock
music'. The Weather Clock is inspired by a lost post-war Mid-20th
century Britain and a fixation with the design and architecture of
the period. The beauty in the newly built regimented housing estates
and clipped front gardens... It is the sound of the empty school hall
once the summer holidays had commenced....faded branch line summers
where steam met diesel.....the sound of the first swallows across
the fields on fresh dew drenched mornings in May.....the nothingness
of weekday afternoons with the lightness of a breeze through the window
and billowing curtains....hearing the distant sound of children playing
in fields far from the estate... the sound of BBC broadcasts closing
down and displaying the TV test card for the afternoon whilst the
country continued to work, play or learn....this is all the sound
of The Weather Clock. The album is released in CD digipack with 1950's
period artwork by Andersen M Studio. The first 350 copies ordered
from the Make Mine Music on-line shop come with a limited 7 track
ep of exclusive and alternative tracks.

than a slight command of pop history & theory chops, and writing
songs for joyous, infatuated people. Perhaps some of them are a bit
over stimulated. Perhaps some of them just like good melodies &
strange chord progressions that still seem vaguely familiar. The music
is catchy but ambitious; crafted but not sterile; interesting but
not pretentious. It's just a lot of fucking fun.

Leonhart, Michael
Hotel Music (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 20TH)
PS, US "Hotel Music" is a pastiche of Serge Gainsbourg hooks,
bedroom drone, California Pop (by way of Van Dyke Parks), and Downtown
experiments. It is a musical portrait by MICHAEL LEONHART, session
player to the stars. It was written and recorded over the course of
a five-month stint (if a worldwide tour that long can be accurately
labeled a stint) playing horns with Steely Dan (yes, Steely Dan).
He passed his downtime on the road abusing various camera & cell
phone cameras, his portable sampler, laptop and whatever instruments
that happened to be within reach. The result is a more experimental
trip than his sadly under-heard pop masterpiece "The Ballad of
Minton Quigley" (2007, self-released). Leonhart has recorded
four solo records in as many years between Steely Dan and Lenny Kravitz
touring, as well as sessioning with such diverse artists as Brian
Eno, David Byrne, Slash, Steven Tyler and Wynton Marsalis.

Leukers, Antonia
Hasenlove Picture Disc (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 20TH)
PS, GERMANY Picture-Disc LP (limited 300). "Hasenlove" is
the debut musical release of Hamburg visual artist Antonia Leukers.
She's a founding member of "Institut Hasenbart", a 10-piece
artist collective dedicated to a meta-scientific research of hares
and related social, zoological and aesthetical phenomena in reference
to the art world and pop culture. Leukers has previously created stitched,
sewed and animated sculptures while casually growing cucumbers, working
for a local in-vitro fertilization hospital and advising young people
on erotic issues as a German Dr. Ruth for a popular Online magazine.
Inspired by a journey to Island, hearing local travel guides spontaneously
interweaving their narrations with sudden outbursts of folklore chanting
and an encounter with Wolfgang Müller's (Die Tödliche Doris)
strategy of transforming and combining his pseudo-scientific, documentary
and social research into a musical and artistic performance she started
to elaborate her fellow artist's lectures with musical renditions.
As a passionate DIY home-recording artist she has soldered her own
microphones, used cheap toy instruments, game boys and minidisk recordings
of kitchen sounds to create her very own bricolage comic universe.
By recycling corny AOR mainstream Rock/Pop songs into some oddly disturbing
and wonderfully weird rabbit love songs with newly-made German lyrics
and combining these with some truly strange original compositions
(ranging from freeform collage to distorted techno to deranged singer/songwriter
stuff), she has created a musical love story in 7 parts. Spiritually
influenced by (though not really sounding alike) German "Neue
Deutsche Welle" artists such as Der Plan and theatrical and surreal
performance bands like The Residents her versions of popular love
songs sound like a teenage/female Andrew Lloyd Webber on bad acid.
This 1-sided vinyl-only picture-disc LP is a strictly limited edition
of 300 copies. Both the gorgeous design and ornamental etching on
the b-side have been done by fellow Hasenbart founding member Renate
Nikolaus.

Licht, Alan & Aki Onda
Everydays (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 20TH)
PS, US Debut collaboration of New York artists and long-time duo partners
ALAN LICHT & AKI ONDA, whose combined history connects artists
straddling the pop and experimental worlds, including Fennesz, Loren
Connors, Takemura Nobukazu, Lee Ranaldo, and Toriko Nujiko. In the
past decade their montage-inspired solo work---Licht's permutational
guitar and tape pieces on Rabbi Sky and A New York Minute, Onda's
field recording recontextualizations on Bon Voyage! and Ancient &
Modern---has co-existed with their experimental sound/visual projects
Text of Light (Licht) and Cinemage (Onda). "Everydays" is
five grandly formed soundscapes that mix Onda's poetic/textural cassette
sounds and the rhythmic/lyrical pull of Licht's guitar. Morphing from
recognizable structures to dissonant hammered chunks and rapid cut-ups,
the album perfectly weaves their signature applications of sound diaries,
minimalism, grainy fidelity, looping and free blues into a dynamic
and ambitious statement.

singles, demos, and two blistering live recordings from 1988, all
re-mastered, or in some cases, mastered for the first time. "...for
all the play and worldwide attention several Seattle-area bands got
during the 1988-92 period, at the end of the day...there was Mudhoney
- and then there was everybody else...These recordings were so life-affirming
upon their release, connecting everything great about the sixties
(biker movies, fuzz boxes, old guitars, three-minute songs) with the
frothing, punk rock of the early 80s, that a whole new 'style' of
music was born. They called it grunge, but to me it was amped-up,
clear-the-room, ramalama rock...and it was about as joyous and as
fun a noise as anyone'd heard in years" - Jay Hinman, liner notes.

Music Go Music
Light Of Love (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 20TH)
PS, US MUSIC GO MUSIC have the simple syrup of pop extravagance running
through their veins. These arena-sized songs are composed with such
savage efficiency that you find yourself humming along before two
bars have gone by. They are as assured and crafted as ABBA and ELO's
best songs of '76, yet Music Go Music sounds fresh. They've exploded
the formulas from the inside out, sounding like a hundred others and
no one else. "Light of Love" is a true celebration of pop
music's potential - laying a thin sheen of magic over the world around
it, and making the tedious bits of the human experience a little less
so. "Light of Love" plays like the first three tracks of
a future Greatest Hits album. "Speak to me, darling in hushed
tones. Tell me your heart's true desire" sings Gala Bell on the
title track, equal parts Debbie Harry, Karen Carpenter, and Kate Bush.
Maybe it's the wonderfully layered vocals, maybe the rich synth textures,
maybe their impossibly uplifting nature, but there is something immediately
familiar about these songs. At first listen, we're inexorably drawn
into their sphere. For at least a moment, we are surrounded by the
halo of their refracted energy - we can bask in the light of love.

the band comes from, and if you ad Black Flag, DNA, Neu! & Pere
Ubu you are pretty close to Nisennenmondais sound. It's raw &
repetitive (post) punk instrumentals, at the same time as they are
wild groovy with a no wave/disco vibe to it. This is the first release

Ponies In The Surf
See You Happy (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 10TH)
PS, US Ponies In The Surf is quietly one of a kind. Siblings and self
proclaimed indie music nerds Alex & Camile live in Cambridge,
MA though they're originally from Bogota, Columbia. The Ponies build
perfect soft pop songs with elements Samba, Beatles, the more sophisticated
folk set, the Pop Vocal traditionalists and they're very much akin
to The Violent Femmes and Johnathan Richman in terms of song craft,
a subtle humor and vulnerability. The Ponies' work is uniquely comforting
and highly addictive. It is served with a rare passion and grace.
It evokes nostalgia for the above mentioned while remaining firmly
planted in its own special, almost timeless place. "After playing
in rock bands for some time, Alexander McGregor decided at some point
that he simply wanted to make some music that could even appeal to
his grandmother. Joined by his sister Camille, the duo plays stripped-down
folkish type music that sounds like it could have been created at
any point in the past 40 years yet still feels fresh." --ALMOST
COOL. "These powerfully quiet traditionalists perform folk songs
with a pan-American touch. It's only a shame that music this delicate
and warm doesn't garner more notice." -POPMATTERS

Salas, Mikel
Bajo Las Estrellas (Beneath The Stars) (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 27TH)
PS, SPAIN Acuarela releases the original soundtrack of "Bajo
las estrellas" [Under the stars] Félix Viscarret's debut
film (2008 Goya* for best Adapted Screenplay), starring Alberto San
Juan (2008 Goya for best Actor) and nominated for best Soundtrack
music by Mikel Salas with twilight western instrumentation. Surprising
bonus track by Flamenco big star, Enrique Morente, who sings the standard
classic "Stella by Starlight." *Goya is the equivalent of
the Oscars for films in Spanish language. "Bajo las estrellas"
starts, and we hear a ukulele, a xylophone; suddenly it bursts a fun
rogue melody, with an ubiquitous banjo and a persistent rhythm, as
if we were traveling in a ramshackle bus. We are entering the impossible
city of Estella (in Navarra, Spain), more imaginary than real, a world
fraught with losers who cling to any chance of leading a more 'normal'
life. Mikel Salas' music is that of iron, scrap metal and abandoned
caravans, rusting, with twilight western instrumentation and lo-fi
sound, a succession of instrumental landscapes, almost borderline
abstractions that travel along with Benito Lacunza (actor Alberto
San Juan) in his journey towards happiness, to the possibility of
a remote happiness. In previous conversations between the director
and the musician, it was much-discussed Daniel Lanois, and, above
all, his album "Shine". Félix Viscarret says that
Mikel Salas likes to get into a project before even shooting. But
the proper 'revelation' came when "Mikel faced the first editing
of the film. That's when we started talking about road music for our
peculiar road movie à la navarra, an industrial western, the
redemption story of an embarrassment guy, Benito Lacunza, who's going
to show us that behind his dirty appearance lies someone with a huge
heart." This is Acuarela's first published soundtrack. But it's
also almost like any other release this label has got us used to.
Almost folk, dark but flooded by rare cracks of light, intimate, warm,
sometimes funny and sometimes bleak. Mikel Salas has written and recorded
(by himself) the sound of how is traveling on roads filled with dust,
deep into the mists of the north, or bordering small towns. And to
conclude the record, a surprise: the voice of Enrique Morente and
his amazing, magical version of Victor Young's standard "Stella
by Starlight, filling the sky with stars.

Sleeping Years, The
We're Becoming Islands One by One (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 10TH)
PS, UK The Sleeping Years is the new project from Dale Grundle, formerly
of the Catchers. Now signed to innovative indie-label Rocket Girl,
the debut album "We're becoming Islands One by One", is
a gorgeous exploration of melody and melancholy. A gifted lyricist,
Dale's exquisitely crafted songs tell of people trying to stay connected
in a world seemingly designed to keep them apart. He is heavily influenced
by the language and culture of his home in Ireland, providing a distinct
character to this highly personal collection of songs. Born in Coleraine,
Northern Ireland to an Irish father and a Scottish mother, Dale started
his first band Catchers while at school. Their first single 'Cotton
Dress' came out on Setanta Records and became single of the week in
Melody Maker. Their debut album 'Mute' was recorded with Mike Hedges
in France. Catchers went on to tour with Pulp, Edwyn Collins, The
Divine Comedy, Dr. John and Oasis. Their second album 'Stooping to
Fit' was recorded by Nick Drake's arranger Robert Kirby. Dale started
his solo project The Sleeping Years with a trilogy of EPs in 2007,
'You and Me Against The World', 'Setting Fire to Sleepy Towns' and
'Clocks and Clones'. These were very well received and are very much
living proof that independent singles do sell-out. They also garnered
critical acclaim, featuring on BBC Radio 1's Introducing, the Guardian's
writer's play list and on the cover mount of Rolling Stone Magazine.
Songs have been heavily played on Gideon Coe's 6music show and on
French radio, having been championed by France's answer to John Peel,
Bernard Lenoir. 'We're becoming Islands One By One" is poised
to become an instant, yet timeless classic with a refreshingly dynamic
twist on acoustic song writing. Dale performs all vocals and guitars,
not to mention bass, Hammond organ, Rhodes piano and e-bow parts and
was joined by cellist Michelle So and Tom Page from Rothko on drums.
The Guardian: 'his voice breaks exquisitely between hope and despair
in songs that the acoustic guitar was invented for' Dazed and Confused:
'a one-man show that owes his lilting metaphysical lyricism to the
likes of Nick Drake, Elliot Smith and John Martyn. It's good to know
that there are people like him out there.

Tabarly (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 10TH)
PS, FRANCE LP + FREE CD. For the 10th anniversary of Eric Tabarly's
death, a famous skipper from Brittany (Northwest of France), the director
Pierre Marcel and Galatée Film release a biography of this
unsurpassed sailor on June, 11. Galatée Film did not hesitate
at all to suggest another exceptional Breton (from Brittany), i.e.
Yann Tiersen to compose the soundtrack of this outstanding film. As
usual, Yann Tiersen did not just make a music that illustrates the
film, but he made a full-fledged, independent, personal and powerful
music. Yann made an instrumental music that gives pride of place to
the piano and to the intimate melodies that will delight his biggest
fans. This record is a kind of bridge in the artist's evolution, from
his first loves to his new folk trend. Under this peaceful, mastered
and warm movie soundtrack, lays actually a new album. After Eric Zonca's
"la vie rêvée des anges", "Amélie
from Montmartre" and "Goodbye Lenin", Yann Tiersen
composed his fourth soundtrack and as the previous films, it is a
safe bet that it will be a success! The record has been initially
made for vinyl and the mastering has been made from this vinyl. The
sound is therefore warm and powerful.

Ueno
Sui-Gin (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 27TH)
PS, AUSTRALIA Ueno, along with his partner Saya, is one of the core
members of Tenniscoats, who've released a number of fantastic discs
of straight up melodic to the core sing-songing joy. 2007 saw the
release of Tenniscoat's 'Totemo Aimasho' for ROOM40 and 'Tan Tan Therapy'
for Häpna/Headz. In addition to his contributions to the Tenniscoats
mothership, Ueno has released a string of solo releases, most of which
explore his engaging approach to the guitar. 'Two Things Always Happen
Simultaneously' released in 2003 on Majikick as a cdr and then re-issued
two years later as a 'proper' Cd on Commune-Disc lays the foundations.
Whilst it is more explicitly a guitar record than what goes down on
Sui-Gin, the Fahey-esque finger-picking that would otherwise plant
him firmly within the Takoma school (Ueno's cat is not called 'Fahey'
without reason) is willfully offset by Ueno's technique of recording
multiple overdubs without recourse to the original. There might be
a little of that on 'Sui-Gin' (Japanese for mercury), too. Either
way, there is an ongoing slippage between intention and accident in
the complex mesh of notes, and Ueno sends himself further away from
any superficial 12-string Tacoma purism by plugging his guitar into
a moog ring-mod and completing erasing its original sound. What you
hear on 'sui-gin' is 9 tracks of alien beauty that sit somewhere between
Derek Bailey and Mouse on Mars' 'Instrumentals' lp. Takashi Ueno plays
12 string acoustic guitar & Moog ring modulator. "For an
instrument that when presented solo often brings to mind a clutter
of reference points, Ueno Takashi's playing is stubbornly his own
and (((hasunosu))) suggests we are hearing but the first offerings
of an increasingly vital proponent of contemporary Japanese guitar
composition." Signal To Noise.

PS, GERMANY Limited 500. "Straight Edge XXS" is the 2nd
vinyl album by Finland's Uton released in a strictly limited edition
of 500 copies on the Dekorder label. It comes in a gorgeous full-colour
collage sleeve assembled by Hirvonen himself. While Uton's last Dekorder
album "Alitaju Ylimina" (and most of his other recorded
works respectively) are hazy lo-fi drone masterpieces for the most
part, this is a completely different affair. Recorded straight to
tape within one month, right after returning from a 6-month trip to
India, these songs (if you could call them songs) are completely out-of-this-world;
very short and crazed sketch-like pieces sounding like a Nonesuch
Explorer LP of long lost field recordings from an as yet unexplored
continent. Or is it World Music from an unknown planet recorded by
those Sublime Frequencies guys from mysterious short wave transmissions?
Well, it is all that and more. It is pure ecstatic expression channelized
through Psychedelia, Free Jazz, Noise and rural ancient Folk Music
from all over the world in a completely naked, predominantly acoustic
setting. One of the purest forms of music you could imagine; while
all the familiar Uton elements remain evident in a hazy backcloth.
Uton is the one-man project of Jani Hirvonen originally hailing from
Tampere. Hirvonen is one of the most active musicians of the Finnish
underground scene that has recently presented us the likes of Kuupuu,
Kemialliset Ystävät, Islaja, Paavoharju and Lau Nau and
a seemingly never-ending stream of beautiful and highly original record
releases. Uton has previously released dozens of CD's, CD-R's and
Cassettes on a myriad of labels including Jewelled Antler, Pseudo
Arcana, Last Visible Dog, Digitalis, Ruralfauna and his own Ikuisuus.
He has collaborated with Amon Dude (Avarus), Anla Courtis (Reynols),
Antony Milton (Black Boned Angel), Ben Reynolds, Peter Wright, Phil
Todd (Ashtray Navigations) and Jan Anderzen (Tomutonttu, Kemialliset
Ystävät) among others. The latter collaboration (under the
Hevoset moniker) is released on LP by Dekorder simultaneously.

several original Factory Records artists to the legendary Plan K venue
in Brussels after a gap of more than 25 years, during which the venue
(a former sugar refinery) had ceased staging live gigs. The event
was also a tribute to the late Anthony H. Wilson, the Factory founder
who died a few months earlier.

Impala Eardrums: A Radium Sampler (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 20TH)
PS, US For fifteen years, TABLE OF THE ELEMENTS has been the preeminent
source of avant audio, championing minimal, improvised, and outsider
musics of various spots and stripes. Now, as its influence radiates
outward, the label presents Radium, its "rock" imprint,
showcased here with "Impala Eardrums, A Radium Sampler".
While minimalist legend RHYS CHATHAM leads the way with a delightful
unreleased piece from his mid-80s archives, most of the other contributors
are younger folks, from a new generation of performers. It's a diverse
bunch, ranging from the raw Americana of MEGAFAUN and JONATHAN KANE,
to the humid, pulsating krautrock of ATELEIA and the spectral songcraft
of PAUL DUNCAN. NEPTUNE serves up its version of home-forged proto-clangor,
while COLLECTIONS OF COLONIES OF BEES and SCHOOL OF SEVEN BELLS pour
forth in glistening, shimmering waves. Together, these eight tracks
- all previously unreleased on CD - have one thing in common: a resolute
will to march headlong into the untamed brambles and briar patches
of 21st-century sound.

Slendid Isolation (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 17TH)
PS, SWEDEN A collection of exclusive tracks from the Radio Dept.,
Testbild!, Most Valuable Players, Differnet, Action Biker, Viktor
Sjöberg, VED, Peter Jackson, Peter Nilsson, Redmalm, Enheten
för musik och melodi, Malkovic, Erik de Vahl, Band in a Box,
Flow Flux Clan, Robotboy, and Jian. Between January and December 2007
Friendly Noise released 18 mp3 singles offered as free downloads from
www.friendlynoise.se. From the start it was intended to be a one-year-long
project. The idea was simple: contributions chosen by us from our
extended family of old friends and new discoveries, usually two songs,
together with an introduction by the artists themselves and a picture
to illustrate and enhance, once or twice a month. This was meant as
a complement to our CD releases, and a chance to easily distribute
great songs, in cases where the album context isn't necessary. These
two ways of distribution aren't contradictory, they're related, as
we stated on our website. Soon we realized the series had become a
success, both when it came to the quality of the output and the amount
of interest generated. So "Splendid Isolation" - our third
compilation after "Friendly People Making Noise" (2003)
and "Are You Scared To Get Happy?" (2006) - is our way of
documenting the series through a selection of the songs and thus giving
them a more official kind of release. The record is also a celebration
of five years of Friendly Noise as a label. The order of the songs
on the record isn't chronological, it's instead our attempt to make
the record sound as good as possible as a whole. TRACKLIST: 1. Bognor
Regis (Peter Jackson) 2. (Jack) Lullaby (Viktor Sjöberg) 3. Rondo

Nervous Circuits (CD/DVD) (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 20TH)
PS, US mastered and the DVD is loaded with select footage from the
band's history along with three additional full live sets. "While
there's nothing all that unique anymore about an indie rock band mixing
in a little electronics, there was something breathtakingly original
about The VSS - essentially a hardcore punk band - incorporating these
elements. The result was something organic and angry and intensely
human, but it was laced with a sharp, robotic edge" - Epitonic.com.

Wedding Present, The
El Rey (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 20TH)
PS, US El Rey - the first new album in over three years from The Wedding
Present - was recorded in early 2008 in Chicago by Steve Albini. The
band returned from an eight-year hiatus in early 2005 with the release
of Take Fountain. This long-awaited album brought them back into the
spotlight with all the style and sophistication associated with a
legendary group, but fans were also pleased to see the band had lost
none of the growling angst with which they had burst onto the scene
with their 1985 debut, George Best. That intensity has been turned
up even further for the new album, El Rey, The Wedding Present's first
collaboration with the legendary Albini since the renowned Seamonsters
in 1991. Written while David Gedge was living in Los Angeles, El Rey
burns with West Coast sunlight; Hollywood seen through the eyes of
a gritty Northerner. Speaking about El Rey in Mojo magazine recently,
Gedge said: "I've been living in West Hollywood for the last
year or so, and while I'm not going to claim that this is my 'L.A.'
album, there are some references. I suppose the themes are lust, jealousy,
betrayal, regret, and obsession, super-heros the usual. We chose to
record with Steve this time because the new songs were sounding very
guitary and quite dark. It's been good.
As you'd imagine, really; Albini knows his stuff". The Wedding
Present will be touring North America in Fall 2008 with the line-up
of: David Gedge (guitar & vocals), Terry de Castro (bass), Graeme
Ramsay (drums), and Chris McConville (guitar).

Windsor For The Derby
How We Lost (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 20TH)
PS, US Despite the connotation of its title, "How We Lost"
is a celebratory album. It's a reflective record and, in its own way,
celebrates the WINDSOR FOR THE DERBY continuum that's been created
from their first release ("Calm Hades Float", 1996) to their
last ("Giving Up the Ghost", 2005). Each of these recordings
is a sequel to the next both in narrative and musically and as the
band's first two records ("Calm Hades Float" and "Minnie
Greutzfeldt") were re-released last year they found themselves
in constant dialogue about their body of work and the paths they'd
chosen. Also a part of that ongoing dialogue were the records that
the band finds itself consistently re-visiting (Swell Maps, Section
25, Psychic TV and much of the Factory Records catalog) and what makes
those recordings timeless and resonate in a personal way with the
band. The songs on "How We Lost" are reflections of those
records and those conversations. It's about the band and the ways
the band has changed over the years, the things they hold onto and
what's been left behind.

Could We Believe In Magic? (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MAY 27TH)
PS, CANADA Vancouver trio, Winnings sophomore full length is as dour
and uncomfortable as it is playful. Its a paradigm sprouted from the
seed of improvisation, but nurtured from a dark and claustrophobic
sentiment. Structurally, Could We Believe In Magic? has it's hands
in a variety of extremes. It runs the gamut, from an apparent abandonment
of traditional tempo and structure, to, at least comparatively, more
conventional composition. Last year's, This Is An For Cigarettes,
Winning's debut album, was a tangled and puzzling foray into rocks
most experimental corners, abandoning rhythm, and structure almost
completely; Only Magazine called it ...a clumsy acrobatic act beneath
the Big Top of punk rock. And Magic is, no doubt, a logical continuation
of such acrobatics; the most notable difference being much larger
occurrences of coherency. Melody and structure are gestured at; sometimes
completed, and sometimes spun quickly out of control. One may assume
that these moments of melody (are we bold enough to call them 'choruses?'),
would smooth out Winning's cumbersome disposition. But it is arguable
that the exact opposite is true. Much like how one warm day will make
the cold ones feel colder; these moments create a reference point
for normalcy. The pop insinuations on Magic are equally as baffling
as the free structured ones.
