Porchmass
PS, US The trio of Grant Capes, Tim Goodwillie, & Justin McInteer
have churned out an entire catalog of blissed-out improvisations that
range from the organic & melodic to overblown chaos. They only
use a small arsenal of acoustic & battery-powered instruments,
singing bowls, & pots & pans as makeshift percussion, but
it is a magic junkyard orchestra. Somewhere near the islands of Jewelled
Antler or The Vanishing Voice. Between the solemn notes of the accordian,
washes of droning keyboards, & turbulent acoustic guitars rises
a heartbroken voice that acts as a torch. The wordless vocals flicker
like volcanic ash falling from a sunkissed sky.

All Natural
Elements (Fire)
PS, US RECENT. "Fire" is pt 1 of a 4-part series in which
each album will represent a different natural element & hip-hop
vibe. True to its name, this represents hiphop's aggressive boom-bap
sound made popular during the mid-90s. MC cap D sets the tone on the
initial track w/ an aggressive battle rap in which he shows that he
is still on top of his game. On past albums they have displayed a
variety of sounds & flavors, however this is "in your face"hip-hop
throughout.

Bisi, Martin
Sirens of the Apocalypse
PS, US Martin Bisi, performer/songwriter and prominent indie fringe
record producer has been at the forefront of studio recording since
the 80's, with a long discography that includes classic records from
SONIC YOUTH, SWANS, JOHN ZORN, HERBIE HANCOCK (Rockit), BOREDOMS,
and AFRICA BAMBAATA to name a few. In his own band he plays guitar,
sings and expands 4 piece rock into a mutant, experimental-pop concoction.
Bisi's persona can be raw and confrontational, as well as funny and
self effacing. The songs are mostly entertaining vignettes of love
and obsession in NYC.

Black Angels, The
Directions to See a Ghost
PS, US From deep in the heart of Texas, armed with the home-grown
mantra "Turn On, Tune In, Drone Out," The Black Angels ring
real and rugged like a crimson full moon-lit night. Their self proclaimed
"Native American Drone 'N' Roll" genre has progressed from
communal living and the members' eclectic upbringings. This is heavy-duty
psychedelic rock with an incessant primitive beat that echoes the
spirit of the 13th Floor Elevators and early Stones. "Directions
To See A Ghost" is the second full-length album from Austin's
darkest droners. With tidal rhythms and rasping epics, "Directions
To See A Ghost" is a driving, psychedelic masterpiece that churns
through 72 minutes and 11 tracks. This highly anticipated follow-up
to the band's 2006 critically acclaimed debut will leave listeners
buzzing.

Black Taj
Beyonder
PS, US This second long-player continues to explore the psychedelic
and classic rock templates with which they worked on their s/t debut,
an incendiary mix of self-aware stoner jams ('Spacewash') and progressive
rock time shifts ('Cold Comfort') that recall each of the musicians'
previous projects. For most of the 1990s, Dave Brylawski and Steve
Popson played in (the recently-reunited) Polvo. In the late 1990s,
Grant Tenille joined Brylawski in the primarily folk-inflected Idyll
Swords. While many bands in the current hard rock revival mindlessly
ape their idols, Black Taj deliver an intelligent updating of these
conventions, and prove again that the twin guitar attack of Thin Lizzy
and the muscular riffing of early ZZ Top still has legs. If you have
been wondering what one-half of Polvo has been up to over the last
decade, look no further. For fans of Awesome Color, Witch, and Dead
Meadow.

Botticellis, The
Old Home Movies
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "You'd never know from listening that
it took the Botticellis' four years to craft their debut album Old
Home Movies. It sounds like the work of one sun-soaked late summer
afternoon spent playing tunes with friends and family. The album is
suffused with warmth and peacefulnees that flows from the gentle strum
of the guitars, the rich organ that seeps into songs like the golden
glow of a sunset, the lush vocal harmonies, and the classic pop song
structures laid down by the group's architect Alexi Glickman. He also
possesses the kind of sweet, high voice that would have held him in
good stead in the Wilson household. Indeed like much West Coast pop
since about 1962 on, the Botticellis have drawn influence from the
Beach Boys. In this case it's the late-'60s version of the band when
the boys sported beards and preferred to surf their inner consciousness
rather than the waves. You can also hear Phil Spector in the reverb-y
production, power pop in some of the more uptempo tracks (like the
back to back crunch of "Up Against the Glass" and "The
Reviewer," which are enough to put every band on Rainbow Quartz
to shame), '70s AM radio pop in the slow, sensitive ballads (the gloriously
sugar-y "Who Are You Now" would have slotted in perfectly
between Bread and Seals & Crofts), and the peppy jangle of modern
Canadian indie pop. These influences are very well blended into an
overall sound that is purely the band's own, though, and it's easy
to enjoy the album on its own instead of constantly, distractingly,
playing spot the lift. Maybe it's the craft that went into making
the album, the sheer amount of time they must have taken picking the
best songs and performances that makes Old Home Movies so fully realized.
Maybe it's just a happy accident. No matter, the important thing is
that the album is as fine a slice of warm, sweet indie pop as you're
liable to find in 2008 or anytime. "

Carrie's sound is expanded beyond the folkie twee indie-tronica of
her first release, Honey Blue Star. Balancing lush and lo-fi sound
aesthetics, Carrie's folksy mannerisms go in between The Postal Service
and The Radio Dept. universes, landing in an unique and minimal melodic
pop. New member Pelvis joins Carrie and contributes sounds and backing
vocals to the album. 1981 was produced by Rubén Tamayo (Fax).

This collection is a wide range of sound works from the ultra-minimal

musicality of "how things change" to the loud violent distortion
of "tempt" (a piece only performed a handful of times for

Christian Family Underground, The
For The Depth Of Your Union
PS, US Summer of '06 Family Underground (DK) recorded with Dave Nuss
of NNCK at Black Dirt Studios in the woods of upstate NY. The yield
was as characteristically unhinged as one might expect: sweeping electronic
sounds backed with wood and bone percussion spirit-conjure. However
also harvested was some new and especially tasty crop: sung and spoken
song, electric guitar/conga 'rock,' and an odd, ghostly sheen coating
the entire proceeding. Nuss comments on the session: 'I remember when
we were recording, momentarily leaving the studio and going out into
the night and feeling it thicken like a partition separating us from
this intense state of clear consciousness we had in the recording,
which was like... humankind's natural state. And then thinking about
Jesper from FU, an adopted Vietnamese living in DK, and how much he
resembles Michael Jackson, and realizing that across continents, no
man can be divided from himself. We had to make this music to provide
for us some fantasy of fulfillment that would carry us through the
weekend like rejuvenated suns born again climbing to heaven, after
being washed in the deepest, bluest sea...' Jacket by designer Susan

PS, US Recorded in '81 & released in '83 by Index Records, making
them, strangely enough, labelmates w/ Wall of Voodoo. They were formed
in '78 from the remnants of NO FUN & THE I-HOLES, Louisville,
Kentucky's 1st 2 punk bands. It's fair to describe them as a genre
unto themselves. They came from punk rock & art school & sounded
like none of their potential allies. Critic Jordan Mamone hit the
nail on the head when he wrote: "Every rare utterance from these
unsentimental adventurers possesses a passion & a manifesto-writing
fervor usually reserved for turn-of-the-century culture movements."

Eyes in the Back of My Eyes in the Back of My Head

assured & swinging "free-bop" collective quartet, who
have been developing their unique take on modern jazz for a decade.

moved towards playing only original compositions. Central to the group's
sound is a commitment to developing challenging & original compositions.

Cud
Showbiz
PS, UK Having departed the independent world and signed with A&M
in 1991, CUD proceeded to pursue the commercial success their previous
releases had hinted at with 1992's Asquarius. Following this, their
first hit album, proved to be the band s longest break between releases
(largely the result of some inter-label disharmony), but they eventually
emerged in 1994 with Showbiz. Recorded primarily in Scotland (at a
studio owned by Fish of Marillion fame, no less), this record saw
their sound mature and showcased a broader range of songwriting styles
than previous efforts. It was well received on its release in April
1994, garnering favorable reviews, and spawned two UK hit singles
in Neurotica and One Giant Love. Sadly, though, the album proved to
be the band's last officially released effort as the pressures of
life on a major and all that it entails took their toll on the band.
This remastered version also includes a number of B-Sides from the
album's single releases, as well as some unreleased out-takes and
demo versions, including material intended for their next album, which
hasn't seen the light of day before now. This release (along with
two more Cherry Red CUD Reissues) comes hot on the tails of 2006's
Rich and Strange The Anthology compilation and 2007's well received
re-issues of two more of the band's albums, all of which reminded

Elvis Belt
PS, UK Formed in Leeds in 1986, CUD went on to forge one of the more
interesting and indefinable sounds of the late 80s / early 90s indie
scene. Fusing a catchy pop sensibility with danceable grooves and
intelligent and often humorous lyrics, they soon became firm independent
favorites and began releasing records on Leeds based Reception Records
in 1987, very quickly catching the ear of John Peel and becoming a
regular fixture of his broadcasts. Three quality singles into their
career, the band secured a deal with Imaginary Records, where they
continued a fine run of singles and eventually released their debut
album. Capitalizing on the band's underground success, in June 1990
Imaginary followed this with this fantastic compilation of their early
releases, topping several independent charts in the process and further
establishing an already strong reputation. Some eighteen years later,
Elvis Belt is updated and reissued here by Cherry Red, together with
a wealth of rarities and unreleased tracks from those formative years
and beyond. This release features the original album in its entirety,
carefully remastered and now sitting comfortably alongside Elvis Handbag,
an additional disc conceived by the band as a sister album to the
original release and containing a number of further B-Sides, Peel
Session recordings and cover versions (including the band's legendary
take on Bohemian Rhapsody, previously only available on the ultra-rare
Alvin Lives in Leeds compilation). This release (along with two more
Cherry Red CUD Reissues) comes hot on the tails of 2006's Rich and
Strange The Anthology compilation and 2007s well received re-issues
of two more of the band's albums, all of which reminded the world

Leggy Mambo
PS, UK Following the release of their debut When In Rome, Kill Me
and 1990 s Elvis Belt compilation (CDMRED355), Leeds indie heroes
CUD set to work on their next album for Imaginary Records. Recorded
during the Summer of 1990, Leggy Mambo proved to be a step in all
the right directions, cementing the sound developed over their previous
releases and capitalizing on the band s pop sensibilities to provide
their most immediately accessible collection of songs to date. Produced
by XTCs Dave Gregory and released in October 1990, the album spawned
the well-received singles Robinson Crusoe and Magic (both of which
might have achieved greater success had they been released on a larger
label) and generated a huge amount of industry interest, eventually
leading to their signing with A & M the following year. This Cherry
Red Gold top Copy version of the album features the newly remastered
original disc, as well as a collection of demos and alternate versions,
all of which have been hand picked by the band themselves. This release

PS, US A year in the making, The Daysleepers return with their full
length Clairecords Debut! "Drowned in a Sea of Sound" takes
nothing but the best elements of the band's highly acclaimed EP's
and blends them with some entirely new experimental soundscapes. The
Daysleepers trademark sound of mixing Dreampop, Post-Punk and New
Wave styles is still very much present, and at times pushes even beyond
those boundaries. Imagine the sounds of the Cure, Cocteau Twins, The
Chameleons and Slowdive rolled into one. These 10 tracks touch on
a wide variety of sounds and emotions ranging from spacey ethereal
drones to blissful up-tempo dreampop beauty. For fans of the early
out-of-print EP's, "Hide Your Eyes" and "The Soft Attack",
"Drowned in a Sea of Sound" is a must have. It is proof

PS, US Dead Man mine the birth of stoner rock, from the Grateful Dead
to Iron Butterfly, trippy and heavy in qual doses, and now they've
signed to Meteor City... Euphoria is much darker and heavier than
their debut self-titled album while maintaining a thoroughly vintage
vibe. There are bluesy up-tempo rockers alongside melodic folk-pop
masterpieces and an unexpected turn into dark and psyched-out heavy
rock. While their debut Self Titled album made a huge impact on the

PS, US Expanded reissue CD package w/ 24 page booklet. Due to continued
demand for this title and the fact that the initial pressing of 1,500

in an expanded package with re-mixed and re-mastered audio. The audio:
Not content to merely order a re-pressing of the same masters on hand
at the Cd manufacturer, Taylor Deupree set out to create what he calls
the "director's cut" of one of the most important Cds in
his catalog. The idea was to open the now-2-year-old computer files
to re-mix and re-master the tracks. Of course over the course of years
computers change, formats change, and Deupree found himself faced
with missing plug-ins, errored sound files and other oddities that
made working with the files difficult. What first seemed like roadblocks
turned into a mission to work with what was there and re-do what was
not. The result is a "Northern" that will, on the surface,
seem quite similar to the original, however listeners will hear new
sounds, extended endings, shortened endings and most of all, an overall
mix that presents these works with a new clarity and spaciousness.
Mastering in the analog domain has given the work a new found sense
of delicacy and detail. the package: A heavyweight cardboard wallet
with debossed typography on the front cover. Inside are two pockets,
one for the CD and one for a 24-page booklet of photography, credits,

Druids of Stonehenge, The

PS, US "The unearthly, savage, Rolling Stones/Pretty Things-inspired
treatment of R&B classics as interpreted by The Druids of Stonehenge
on Sundazed 10" vinyl is a phenomenon that quite simply has to
be heard to be believed. When frontman David Budge cuts loose on such
familiar '60s staples as 'Who Do You Love,' 'I Put A Spell On You,'
'Pretty Thing' and 'Bald Headed Woman,' it's almost as though he's
being strangled by Bo Diddley's 'cobra snake necktie' with eyes popping,
cartoon-like, out of his skull. The New York-based Druids cut one
album after they'd moved to Los Angeles, but these six early sides,
tracked at famed Nola's Penthouse studios in Manhattan, are truly
the stuff of garage R&B legend!"

Family Underground
Black Hole
PS, US 2007 release. "Family Underground drenched the East Coast
of the USA in molten syrup last year and they toted along a tour CD-R
entitled Black Hole released by the fine folk of Secret Eye. Mega
bummed I didn't get to feel their magic live but I ordered that tour
disc post-haste. Man, when I got it, I was slain. I thought it was
their finest work to date so I had to invoke it on vinyl. I tapped
into the band's communication network and together we figured this
would make a killer double LP, definitely one for the record books.
So The Underground sent me a half hour of unreleased musics to fill
the vinyl sides to fruition. Holy Hannah, was I unprepared for A!
How well the new jams mind-melded with the other tracks. And B --
the superb variation of the entire work with paramount peaks and deep
arcane valleys. Get it and trip!" Limited to 500 copies on black
vinyl with full color gatefold jackets.

Fax
Yo Recuerdo
PS, MEXICO Fax delivers his sixth release, Yo Recuerdo. Upgrading
the sounds of his previous release, Primario, Fax continues the path
into ambient and down tempo electronica. Whereas Primario was marked
by a dark undercurrent of sound, Yo Recuerdo is a brighter affair.
Yo Recuerdo is dreamier, closer to the sounds of Guthrie and Budd,
but retaining the minimal electronic feel Fax is known for. And for
those missing Fax dancier techno moments, there is a remix of one
of the most memorable tracks on the album "Cuarto Para Tres".
Album mastered by Fernando Corona (Murcof) with guest vocals by Florencia
Ruiz and Uriel Villalobos (Perdutto). TRACKLISTING: 1. Intro 2. Cuarto
Para Tres 3. Concreto 4. Cielo Rojo 5. Rota 6. Yo Recuerdo (I Remember)

PS, US For the better part of a decade, Kentucky's Foxhole has sought
to create music that speaks from-and to, and of-the soul. And nowhere
is that pursuit so potent as on their debut full-length album We the

barrage of deft percussion has brought comparisons to instrumental
bands such as Explosions in the Sky, Mogwai, and Do Make Say Think.

Froberg, Tobias
Turn Heads
PS, US Swedish singer-songwriter sensation Tobias Froberg has recently
spent his time hanging out with friends. Not only did he log production
duties the forthcoming offering from Peter Moren (Peter of Peter Bjorn
And John) but he spent some time working on his own, third release
Turn Heads. His new album features a gaggle of his mates including
Peter, Norwegian chanteuse Ane Brun, the heavenly Brit singer songwriter
Kathryn Williams, the troubadour Tietur, Existensminumum and Torbjörn
Zetterberg (Folke). He even made it a family affair, working with
his father, jazz musician Ante Fröberg. Although Froberg invites
his buddies along to create music his albums have his personal fingerprints
all over them. His first two releases, For Elisabeth Wherever She
Is (2004) and Somewhere In the City (2006) are both self produced.
Both records are much loved all over the globe, while Elisabeth was
nominated for a Swedish Indie Grammy.

Goto80
Made On Internet
PS, GERMANY Considering the global distribution of computer technology
for already over 30 years, the Demoscene and the related Chiptunes
music have never really had a high profile. Maybe that's because of
their non-commercial background, or because making obsolete digital
technology the center of cultural production is mostly an insider's
passion. Call it 'Geek-Art for Geeks.' In today's electronic music,
the sounds of Gameboy, C64, and other discarded game hardware have
gained cult status, propelled by an enthusiastic community. A key
character in this permanent dedication to chiptunes is Anders Carlsson
from Sweden. He has been an active member of the demoscene for almost
15 years and known under the name of GOTO80 for almost a decade. Always
driven by the everlasting challenge to compose music for the best
C64 demo. His knowledge of the sonic core of the C64, the legendary
SID-Chip, is awesome. Just as exceptional are his musical intuition
and his stylistic variety, combined with his technical skills. Made
On Internet brings together 11 of his recent works showing the full
scope of his production work.

Take Refuge in Clean Living
PS, US New album, five long songs. 'Take Refuge in Clean Living' sees
Grails pulling back their already-wide lens on multiple sonic horizons.
Opening with a nod to Syd Barret's Pink Floyd (Piper at the Gates
of Dawn) the record begins with morse code and drops into one of the
heaviest slow-burn grooves in the Grails canon. Sounding something
like Hawkwind and Ravi Shankar scoring Bladerunner, it's lysergic
and earthy for Grails in a new way. The rest of the record moves from
blissful Eno-inspired ambience, to epic Morricone rock hymns, to an
unexpected take on a Ventures tune that returns the listener back
to the very beginnings of instrumental rock music. 'Take Refuge' seems
to suggest that Grails can't run out of ideas.

Gregor Samsa
Rest
PS, US In their third full-length album, Gregor Samsa takes a new
approach to composition, both in process & instrumentation. The
result is Rest; nine pieces composed over e-mail during the course
of nine months by key members. In Rest, GS expand on their affinity
for minimal, classical instrumentation mixed with mangled & manipulated
sound through integration of new instruments such as the celesta,
clarinet, classical voice & vibraphone. Along with these new sounds,
guitar has been almost entirely replaced by piano, whose parts were
recorded on a rare Bösendorfer once owned by Philip Glass. These
pieces demonstrate a shift in focus to harmony, restraint & the
use of muted tones, while less interest is taken in the large dynamic
shifts that once carried the weight of many of their compositions.

Hammock
Maybe They Will Sing For Us Tomorrow
PS, US After four well-loved and critically lauded recordings, Hammock
returns with a new full-length, special release, Maybe They Will Sing
for Us Tomorrow, which features eleven new songs and original artwork
by Riceboy Sleeps (Jonsi Birgisson of the Grammy-nominated Sigur Ros
and Alex Somers of Parachutes). At the invitation of Birgisson and
Somers, Hammock gave their first-ever live performance at the after
party celebration of the Riceboy Sleeps overseas debut art exhibition,
held in Hot Springs, AR in August 2007. Maybe They Will Sing for Us
Tomorrow is the studio recording of the original music written and
played by Hammock for the occasion. "Studio performance"
is a more accurate phrase; as the guitars for these songs were recorded
live, just as the band performed them, later rounded out by Matt Slocum's
expansive, emotive cello. This is Hammock reduced to an essence-a
core. There are no intrusions. No beats. No lyrics. There is nothing
to break the spell, or jar the listener out of the moment. "
Maybe They Will Sing for Us Tomorrow" has all of the vulnerability
and spontaneity of a performance, yet all of the rich, cinematic beauty
of a Hammock studio recording. Hammock's self-imposed minimalism is
expertly merged with their hallmark melodic songwriting, resulting
in the most focused, mesmeric and deeply personal album in their catalog
to date. "...music in the spirit of Japanese art-simple by form,
but it's full of complexity in its tone and its timbres." --Bob
Boilen, NPR, All Songs Considered. "Hammock continue their ascent
to godhead status among the drone-rock underground." -All Music
Guide. Tracks: 1. Gold Star Mothers, 2. City in the Dust on My Window,
3. This Kind of Life Keeps Breaking Your Heart, 4. Mono No Aware,
5. Three Sisters, 6. Maybe They Will Sing for Us Tomorrow, 7. Elm,
8. Razorback Drug Town, 9. Eighty-Four Thousand Hymns, 10. We Will

Hayman, Watkins, Trout & Lee
Self-Titled
PS, UK For Fans Of: Hefner, The Wave Pictures, Alan Lomax, Leadbelly,
Townes Van Zandt. 14 dynamite tracks of East London bluegrass featuring
Darren Hayman of Hefner and Dave Tattersall of The Wave Pictures,
including covers of songs by Townes Van Zandt and The Mountain Goats
along with seven band originals. Hayman, Watkins, Trout and Lee are
a country, bluegrass band from East London. They don't sing in American
accents and their songs feature tube trains, Bethnal Green, sick days,
flat lemonade and unmade beds. HWT&L perform weary singalongs;
fragile and flawed ballads that wipe a tear and force you to smile.
Darren Hayman (ex-Hefner) formed the band with Dave Watkins, in 2005,
as an antidote to their 'career' bands. The idea was that this would
be a band with as little ego as possible, with everybody taking vocals,
submitting material, leaving and arriving as they wished. The group
is as much about playing around Darren's kitchen table as it is playing
on any stage. In fact the original idea was even to avoid the notion
of doing records. However when Dave Tattersall (The Wave Pictures)
joined in 2007 with a whole repertoire of blues and country songs,
as well as his own fantastic ballads, it became obvious that they
had something worth preserving. In the spirit of Big Pink, the Basement
Tapes and the first McCartney album, it was decided to record the
album in two days at Darren's house, with a bunch of battered microphones,
a fresh pot of tea, and some fruitcake. The resultant record features
seven band originals (four written by Darren and two by Dave Tattersall)
alongside covers of songs by Townes Van Zandt and The Mountain Goats
and smattering of traditional numbers. Hayman, Watkins, Trout and
Lee let you peer though the cracks of their kitchen, and hit nearly
all the right notes in the process. Let them give you a warm handshake.

Idle Tigers
The Spirit Salon
PS, US The debut album by Idle Tigers: Idle Tigers is Ross Hawkins.
Momus writes, "Hawkins seems to be a young man suffused with
delicate, carefully-structured lust, a neo-Victorian from Bradford,
England who's relocated -- possibly for the purpose of study -- to
Toronto, Canada. The world of his songs, though, has stayed rooted
in England, or rather, the imaginary, filtered England that rises
up in the spirit of an exile, replacing the reality with something
more mythical. Here Lewis Carroll meets Brian Eno, and music hall
meets the avant-garde. Listening to [the song] "The Shadow Falls
Across The Fridge, Frank" I was reminded of my first listens
to Toog or The Divine Comedy (if they'd listened to a lot more Pierre
Schaeffer) or, much further back, The Passage. These songs seemed
to come from the odd place where the breezy meets the zany, and it's
there we can have adventures in wonderland. "Unlace Me Behind
The Hedge" is a touching, absurd account of a sexual encounter
which somehow reminds me of Artery's mysterious song "Into the
Garden" (a Peel favorite in the 80s, it concerns sibling sex).
"I reckon that sex is just special effects," the fey-voiced
Hawkins sings against piano arpeggios, "a rite, a performance
by the fireworks department". His song "Jonah" could
almost be something off my own first album, Circus Maximus."
High praise indeed! Get it while it's hot.

Monochrome Set
The Independent Singles Collection
PS, UK Suave; debonair; sophisticated. Haughty, perhaps, for those
who favor the pejorative. Aristocratic in more than one sense, classy
in at least as many. The Monochrome Set were effortlessly inventive,
literate, poised and immaculate of tuneage, possessed of an internal
dialogue as a band that allowed them to surf their own narrative.
They were just unlike anything else, in layman s terms. Instead, their
sound harked back to a golden era of British pop songwriters. But
there was nothing retrogressive about their endeavors. Instead they
wrote songs that recreated the drama and promise of a Pearl &
Dean interval theme, veering from lullaby to mambo to harmonic pop,
accompanied by lush melodies and irresistibly playful lyrics that
embraced morbidity at one extreme, and pitch-perfect satire at another.
Because they could. Brand new release of Monochrome Set's complete
independent singles collection including b-sides and rare tracks Norman
Cook aka Fatboy Slim, a long-term fan of the band, has recorded a
cover of He's Frank with guest vocals by Iggy Pop and indeed this

Nadadora
La Química Que Nos Une
PS, SPAIN A mini CD featuring a new song ("Septiembre no está
tan lejos") the video of their song "El bosque" (by
77Pandas), and four extraordinary remixes of songs from their second
album, "Hablaremos del Miedo, made by some of the most relevant
artists of the Spanish indie scene. These very personal reworking
of their songs include remixes by Jaime Cristóbal (Souvenir),
who has remixed "Después de todo", Dorian ("El
bosque"), Javier Standard ("A=B=C") and Homeboy dj
("La Forma"). But it's not just a remixes CD - "Septiembre
no está tan lejos" is a new song which shows the way of
things to come, as the new songs that Gonzalo Abalo is writing for
the band will probably feature more electronic arrangements in the
future, which will enrich the sound of the band both on record and
live. Connoisseurs of the band won't be surprised to find echoes of
The Field Mice, New Order, Trembling Blue Stars or The Radio Dept.
in these new songs. "Evelyn Ashford", featured on the compilation
"Juegos Olímpicos" already showed this new sound,
and "Septiembre no está tan lejos", featured on this
mini-CD goes a bit further on, while retaining the main features of
the Nadadora sound at the same time, especially the double vocals
by Sara and Gonzalo, their brilliant choruses and melancholic moods.
All in all, here's a record with a renewed point of view of Nadadora's
songs, and aimed at the dance floor, topped by an amazing video for
the song "El Bosque" directed by Spanish ace company 77Pandas.
Luis Escalante, again, is responsible for the "La química
que nos une" artwork, and Arturo Vaquero, another usual suspect
of Nadadora's career, has been in charge of the mastering in his Abrigueiro
Studios in Friol, Lugo (Spain).

New Age
All Around
PS, GERMANY One of the most eye-opening LP archival issues of 2007
is now also available on CD, with bonus tracks. Also including members
Mark Levinson and Bruce Langhorne. "This is what can be called
one of the major sensations in the raga influenced psychedelic/acid
folk field. Also some of the earliest recordings in this genre and
hitherto unreleased. After the release of the Light of Day album in
1966 the now legendary Pat Kilroy and Susan Graubard went on with
playing and creating music together. What you hear on this album is
what they recorded for Warner Brothers in the summer of 1967, a true
groundbreaking adventure of the highest order. They expanded in the
direction they started in 1966 and the result is far beyond and superior
to everything I heard from that time period before in this musical
style except for Tim Buckley. No wonder that it didn't come out at
that time because those recordings were for sure far too adventurous
for Warner Brothers and also for almost other leading music companies
at the time. Incredible -- and I mean INCREDIBLE raga influenced psychedelic/acid
folk with some of the best songwriting I know of with monstrous lyrics
and deep lead vocals. Also a wide range of instruments were played
like incredible raga-esque acoustic guitar, electric bass, Spanish
cowbells, bell tree, silver flute, bamboo flutes, viola, tamboura,
conga drums, tables, acoustic and electric bass and tambourine. Pat
Kilroy sadly died of Hodgkin's disease in December of 1967 at a very
young age. If this record had a proper release at the time, it would
be a major classic and a milestone today in the psychedelic history
book. This CD release contains six superb never before released bonus
tracks recorded at Warner Brothers Studios and KPFA-FM radio station
during 1967. Be ready for an incredible musical trip along with an
amazing, long and very intense story behind."

juxtaposing light, catchy melodies with lyrics that subtly lament
modern life and society. The icing on the cake comes from the background
harmonies provided by Erica Corniel, Alissa Hacker, and Jessica Gonyea;
the end result resembles a dance party as hosted by Arcade Fire. While
obviously indebted to these contemporaries, however, the Midwestern
roots of Office give A Night at the Ritz a warm, easy, unpretentious
feel that could make it more inviting -- and possibly appealing --
to casual club-goers and indie rock fans alike. Overall, the band's
sound is sweet, if not terribly deep -- even breakup ballad "+/-
Fairytale" is upbeat enough musically that it's easy to miss
the meaning of the lyrics. Their heavy reliance on prominent backbeats
and danceable grooves becomes noticeably repetitive by the middle
of the album, a problem that is remedied by three songs that are mysteriously
relegated to the album's end. "Paralyzed Prince" and "Dominoes"
both feature tight vocal harmonies and vaudeville-tinged piano that
call to mind Mika, Duke Special, and even shades of Queen. Add the
breezy and refreshing closer "Suburban Perfume" to the equation
and it seems that Office has more to say, but may be hesitant to give
too much of the game away too early -- or maybe they're simply hinting
at their potential scope. ~ Katherine Fulton, All Music Guide

Pia Fraus
After Summer
PS, US Clairecords is extremely proud to present Pia Fraus' new album
"After Summer". After 5 long years, we welcome the Estonian
pop geniuses back to the Clairecords label with open arms. "After
Summer" is produced by legendary Glaswegian Norman Blake (Teenage
Fanclub, BMX Bandits, The Pastels etc). Pia Fraus and Norman Blake
kept file transfer programs busy for months to exchange soundfiles;
this relationship has created something magical. "After Summer"
is the 4th proper album from the Pias, and quite possibly their best
album to date. No wonder, if your idol takes producer's chair! The
album also features some guest musicians: Estonian electronica stars
Galaktlan and Pastacas guest on two of the album's tracks. Moreover,
"After Summer" has the well-known and well-loved Pia Fraus
sound, quality songwriting, a lot of studio tricks and layers of guitars,
synths, and boy/girl vocals. This album will bring huge grins to the
mouths of Pia Fraus fans, yet at the same time it is a perfect introduction
to Pia Fraus for the uninitiated. For fans of My Bloody Valentine,
Stereolab, Chicago Underground Quartet, The Pastels, The Beatles,
and - of course - Pia Fraus!

Pump Kinn & Don/Brian Miller & Kevin Shields
Virgin Passwords
PS, US So Cal noise Nor Cal. Recorded at the end of nearly 9 months
of touring, Virgin Passwords reflects a long evolution in sound and
concept for Brian Miller & Kevin Shields. A combination of mechanical
grindings and digital sweeps, mortal shovings and sudden transportations
into secret chambers hold the secrets of the Virgins themselves. The
Virgins that control the universe. The mafia of the cosmos. Beyond
the cliched metaphor of purity and straight to literally not having
sex at all. Because a Brian Miller & Kevin Shields performance
proves that a noise show can be (hyper)active, crowd-engaging and
knock everything to the floor without invoking angst and self-loathing.
In other words, without hate-fucking everyone. Virgins. Pump Kinn
& Don: 'Hijokaidan by DJ Screw.' One side apiece from each of
these duos of destruction." Limited to 300 copies with beautiful
DJ-style jackets designed by Aaron Winters at Abide Visuals.

Sun Paulo
Electric Wisdom Sound System Bitter Sweet
PS, UK Mating rock guitar with electronic dance dance rhythms, Japan's
The Sun Paulo can only be described as a musical roller-coaster, careering
through impossibly-convoluted twists, turns and dazzling displays
of kinetic virtuosity shot with rampant, crazed energy. Although musical
reference points aren't hard to spot, the freewheeling, quite natural
way they're gobbled up and spewed back out at often blinding speed
makes for a listening experience quite unlike anything else on the
planet. Leading the charge is guitarist and founder member Taiji Sato.
He started the project in 2000 with DJ Really? who left in 2002 to
be replaced by renowned session players Toshiyuki Mori on keyboards
and drummer Takashi Numazawa. They've since played a host of major
festivals, released their debut album After the Eclipse, soundtracked
the movie Kalalu and started Tokyo's regular Wisdom parties in 2004
collaborating with noted DJs including Ken Ishii, Tsyoshi and Hiroshi
Kawanabe. Electric Wisdom Sound System can switch gear several times
during the course of one track, like "But We Want More",
which eventually settles into a mighty slavering funk beast, or, even
more extreme, the three part "Electric Western", which manages
to straddle jazz, beatific piano-string ambience, belting techno and
what sounds like the Mahavishnu Orchestra dry-humping System 7 at
the Paradise Garage. Shards of 70s groups like Focus, the Allman Brothers,
Santana and the Mothers flash past in what sometimes resembles an
aural meteor storm, often colliding with 21st century electronica,
all climaxing with an outrageous version of Burt Bacharach's "Close
To You" which will carry you off to a higher plane altogether.
This album is launch-pad, take-off and best part of one of the strangest
trips anyone has had the skill or plain nerve to attempt in recent
years. Tracklist 1...i against a speeeeed! 2...~but we want more 3...~another

Favourite Places
PS, UK Favourite Places brings together field and compositional recordings
depicting places of importance and significance within the lives of
contemporary artists. Features Leafcutter John, Taylor Deupree, RF,
Biosphere, Dot Tape Dot, Claudia, John Kannenberg, Aaron Ximm, Build
& Nomad Palace). There are places in this world we return to time
after time because they hold something precious that nurtures us.
Favourite Places is about sharing a bit of what has been found with
others. Each artist was invited to participate in the project by making
a field recording capturing the essence of the place. This was followed
by an audio composition designed to portray their subjective perspective
of the place. The bringing together of both the field and compositional
recordings became a way of documenting the existence and importance
of specific places within the world. In essence Favourite Places is
a dynamic audio diary. The aim has been to enable a creative interaction
between external and internal realities. It is hoped that the pieces
will inspire the audience to become increasingly active listeners
whilst experiencing their own favourite places. The world is always
changing for better and for worse. Favourite Places is a snap shot
amongst this movement aiming to capture something beautiful. Each
individual CD features a unique location dot matrix representing the
10 tracks on the album. These hand made designs bring a unique design
aesthetic to the product package. The CD also contains a fold-out
poster print with written and visual information relating to each
favourite place. Design & art direction turned on its head by

US bands and from Germany, Peru, France each one). The groups included
are: Blackrock, Sound Machine, Yesterday's Obsession, Mastermind,
Sangre Mexicana, Bhagavad Gita, Protein Bros, Purple Canteen, Los

Friends EP
PS, US 4 brand new songs plus a remix of "Friends", none
of which appeared on the new full length Ween album just released
last fall. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "What these five songs have in common
is that they're lighter on their feet than the Quebec material, and
it reconnects Ween to the devilish humor of their best '90s work,
along with the excellent songwriting that's always been their backbone.
If they can keep this up for a full album, they'll have a fine comeback
on their hands, but the Friends EP should be enjoyed on its own for
its bright blast of song, especially since none of the tunes will
be available on La Cucuracha (with the exception of "Friends,"
but that will be in an alternate mix)."

Action BIker
Hesperian Puisto (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 24TH)
PS, SWEDEN It really is time for Action Biker's first solo album!
It has now been six years since she emerged as an artist doing fun
and popular live shows and releasing CD-R's in the indie pop scene
of Gothenburg, Sweden, which included people like Jens Lekman and
The Honeydrips. Since then, Sarah Nyberg Pergament has been involved
in other projects, such as Flow Flux Clan, Kissing Mirrors and The
Dreamers, whose record "Day For Night" has received great
acclaim from different places around the world. Over the years, Sarah
has also performed lots of Action Biker shows (some, as an opening
act for Le Tigre and The Embassy), contributed to recordings with
Lars Blek (The Field), Differnet and The Honeydrips, and all this
time, new recordings with Action Biker have popped up on compilations
and singles. In brief, when "Hesperian Puisto" finally is
released, it means the début of someone with a lot of experienceŠ
The record is named after the Hesperian park in Helsinki, Finland,
where Sarah lived for a while. She describes her music as baroque
on synthesizers. It is pop music built on complex naivety - altogether
very accessible music with distinct vocals and a crispy, sweet, analogue
sound. Two great-looking videos are also included on the CD. References
