A Sunny Day In Glasgow
Scribble Mural Comic Journal
PS, US Using mandolins, banjos, noise, samplers, lots of cuttin' n
pastin', and all of the normal band instruments, Philadelphia's A
Sunny Day in Glasgow adds lush female vocals and dance-y rhythms to
make dreamy pop music. Distorted guitars alongside Robin and Lauren's
vocals glisten for thirteen storied tracks on "Scribble Mural
Comic Journal." The album succeeds in marrying Cocteau Twins'
otherwordliness, JAMC white noise, the best aspects of early Aphex
Twin, and the jangle of "Strawberry Wine" era MBV to create
pop music that somehow makes sense despite making no sense. (4 stars)
Like Grizzly Bear, ASDIG's got a steep pop-to-noise curve, so their
most gorgeous melodies become thick and swampy before you've noticed
the tide has come in. Even the brightest colors look black if you
smear them all together." - Pitchfork " (9 out of 10) Captivating.
Stunning. A Sunny Day in Glasgow has single-handedly returned the
shoegazer genre to its former glory. One of the best releases of 2006!"

Felicidades
PS, SPAIN The songs are stretched about as if tensed by strings manipulated
by struggling automatons whom are unpredictable, deconstructing the
structure until they are impregnated with a personality which is deliberately
imperfect as an unfinished sketch, as an analgesic dissolving within
an organism, taking effect slowly, and opting to use the label of
autistic folk, due to his rejection to that which has been stipulated,
and his almost harmful sensibility.

Afflicted Man
Complete Recordings
PS, US Too freaked out for punks and too punked out for freaks, STEVE
HALL stalked the nascent British Punk/DIY scene under the guise of
AFFLICTED (later AFFLICTED MAN) throughout the early '80s to the interest
of almost no one. Hiding in plain sight, Hall unleashed a string of
7-inches and LPs that evoked a singular and unique take on the punk
sneer made fashionable by the Sex Pistols and their minion. Primitively
blending elements of psychedelia and dub over his feral, chainsaw
approach, Afflicted Man unleashed a miasma of tripped out, fuzzy aggro
thrashers that would eventually climax into a masterpiece of pedal
stomping carnage-the unimpeachable Get Stoned Ezy LP-the likes of
which are only now being fully digested. Easily one of the UK's strangest
and ignored DIY punk bands. This collection includes the entire output;
all three mega rare 7-inches plus the hard to find LPs The Afflicted
Man's Musical Bag, I'm Off Me 'Head, and the aforementioned Get Stoned
Ezy. Complete Recordings is the type of release to make even the most
knowledgeable of humbugs sit up and take notice. Essential in every
way.

PS, US From the co-founder of GUS-GUS is a collection of songs he
has pain stakingly crafted, composed & orchestrated over the past
couple of years. It reunites him with Bix (who has remixed Madonna,
Beck & Sigur Ros). The result is a collection of blissful, mini-symphonies
w/ an infectious pop edge. Electronic hisses, fizzes, & squelching
bass lines, they've created a rich tapestry of orchestration, eerie
bleeps & rousing soulful vocals.

Air Formation
Daylight Storms
PS, UK After last years astounding 57 Octaves Below EP, Brighton's
Air Formation are back with their third album. Recorded over the Summer
with producer Pat Collier, mastered by Shimmydisc/Bongwater maestro
Kramer Daylight Storms is their most accomplished work to date. Drawing
from the likes of eighties shoegazers My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive,
as well as lesser known noise-dreamers like the fabulously mysterious
Flying Saucer Attack, Air Formation sit comfortably alongside the
current crop, Sigur Ros, Long-View, Mew et al while at the same time
following a path of their very own making. Think Mogwai, Explosions
In The Sky, the sound of jet engines. Air Formation can go from breathy
escapism to futuristic terrorcaust in a matter of minutes whilst still
encapsulating the listener. Live shows are rare but stunning, recent
supports have included Mark Gardner, Ulrich Schnauss and Rachel Goswell.
The band will be back to delight in the Spring.

Free Your Mind
PS, US "The 700 West Sessions" Based in Indianapolis in
the early 70s, the group released only 2 obscure 45s in their recording
career. They had a poltical edge similar to L.A. Carnival & the
hardest brass section since The Kashmere Stage Band. While their biting,
difficult-to-categorize prog funk/soul/rock could potentially reach
far beyond Indianapolis's bounds, the band never found a label to
take them to the next level. Obviously influenced by, but by no means
simply imitators of, the sound of early Parliament & Funkadelic
arguably the most unique funk to originate from Naptown, & some
of the best music of its kind.

Analogue Minefield
A Fine Adjustment Of Time
PS, UK Blending elements of trip-hop, reggae, drum & bass and
ambient, Dublin-based Analogue Mindfield's music was described by
Cheshire Cat of Leftfield as "a heavyweight mix of reggae, old
school dub with a vibrant brass-driven trip - they skank like a mouthful
of liquorice allsorts". Analogue Mindfield are Snapper J, Gizzy
D, Lariman, Yolazy and Kitty B. Their Mission Statement is simple
"Create auditory soundscapes of challenging yet accessible music,
whilst retaining an inspired socially conscious theme to our tunes."
- Gizzy D. The band have worked on a number of collaborations for
these recordings including: Tim Bran Subsonar, Dreadzone, Transmission]
Dr Das [Asian Dub Foundation], Eric Rico [producer/remixer Jurassic
5, Pharcyde, Tupac Shakur Tribute album], Belka & Strelka [The
Orb, The Transit Kings] Electric Forgiveness [Jon Dawson - Third of
Never, John 'Rabbit' Bundrick - the Who, Bob Marley]. Snapper J and
Gizzy D met while playing with Irish urban guerrillas The Subtonics.
Snapper J began his musical career fronting one of Ireland's most
popular reggae bands Keltic Posse, gigging with reggae legends Derrick
Morgan and Laurel Aiken as their support band, whilst in their own
right headlining at The Montreaux Jazz festival. Gizzy D, founding
member and resident producer of Loop Studios in Dublin has worked
with Primal Scream, The Thrills, Shane McGowan, Thin Lizzy, Relish,
Andy Rourke [The Smiths], The Frames, Jerry Fish, Blood or WhiskeyŠ
and more. He is also a director of www.cpu.ie, Ireland's biggest online
music resource. Nigerian-born Lariman originally shot to fame in Turkey
where he was the leader in the vibrant reggae scene that swept the
country in the 90's. Moving from there to Ireland he became the resident
MC for the legendary Firehouse Skank Soundsystem performing alongside
Brother Culture [Trojan Soundsystem] and supporting reggae superstars
Lee Scratch Perry and The Skatalites. Kitty B's reputation as one
of Dublin's most respected session vocalists, brought her to the attention
of Snapper J and Gizzy D, who recruited her for the current album.
Since then she has worked with Belka & Strelka and is due to record
with labelmates Transit Kings [Alex Paterson, Dom Beken, Guy Pratt]
in the near future.Yolazy, musician/producer/remixer first began working
with Analogue Mindfield when he added some drum tracks and mastered
their first album. He has worked with Colm O'coisoig [My Bloody Valentine],
Leroy [The Prodigy], Nina Hynes, Produkt, The Pale, Stano, and has
remixed and mastered for a host of others.

Arc Lab
No Spectre
PS, US Arc Lab's sophomore release "No Spectre" finds the
n5MD imprint returning to its roots. Medard Fischer (a.k.a Arc Lab)
uses almost 99.9% the digital realm to create his sonic tapestries.
Those familiar with Fischer's music will hear unparalleled growth
in his production and songwriting since 2005's "the nineteen
floors" (MMBP). Those unfamiliar will take comfort in his musical
expressions. "No Spectre" features cascading rhythms reminiscent
of some of Telefon Tel Aviv's beat-work, the melodious cadence of
early Arovane and some of the warm yet slightly sinister elements
of label-mate Proem. It highlights a delicate balance of tension and
emotion, harnessing errant melodies, fractured percussion and granular
synthesis experiments to make that all-important musical connection
with the listener. Human moments made by machines? A human heart succumbing
to the synthetic? Or maybe just an artist utilizing some old spectres
to make something all his own... tracklisting: I`m All Vectors, Versions,
Natch, So Much For No Surprises, The Several Song Dead Days, Miss
Wet T-Shirt Vancouver 2006, Plays Tim Arndt, Spectres, The Past!,

PS, US Brooklyn's (by way of Ann Arbor) AWESOME COLOR's debut full-length
is a mother of a scorched groover. Just check out the track "Free
Man," it says it all. Guitarist DEREK STANTON, drummer ALLISON
BUSCH, and bassist MICHAEL TROUTMAN have been blowing minds with heavy,
cosmic guitars and a rhythm section like a freight train. When they
play, they're often joined by brothers and sisters grabbing instruments
and getting loud: barefoot guitar solos, sax in the aisles and wolf
dancing all around. Produced by THURSTON MOORE, ANDREW KESIN and the
band. Pressed on red vinyl and packaged in gatefold sleeves. CD released

Bark Haze, The
Unititled
PS, US This limited edition lp was pressed in an edition of 500 with
letterpressed covers done by Manifesto. These are completely different
recordings than the Bark Haze compact disc also on Important Records.
The Bark Haze is primarily a guitar duo of GOWN (nom de plume of one
Andrew Macgregor) and Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth etfuckingcetera).
Auxiliary members have been know to include Pete Nolan (Magik Markers,
Virgin Eye Blood Brothers, Cops et al). Their name came from a mis-hearing
of the radical early 70s R+B group the Bar-Kays and from that moment
the concept of mis-hearing and allegiance to presenting the mis-hearing
as some open-ended musical course became The Bark Haze's identity.
So far all concerts have taken place in Western Massachusetts and
once in the confines of Cambridge, MA's Twisted Village record emporium.
They anxiously await their debut gig in the UK at the Nightmare Before
Christmas event curated by Moore. As the heroic and potentially bonkers
Carpenters refrained We've Only Just Begun. Damn straight.

him, Vince began sharing the early BC material over the internet &
the collaborative process began. The core nucleus of the group became
Vince, Brooks Tipton (UNWED SAILOR), Adam Putnam, Matthew Putnam (ex-LOVEDRUG),
Chase Pagan (MILITIA GROUP label) & Kyle Smith. What began as
a fun tape swap among friends to escape from the mundane quickly became
a true band of seven members, all bringing their own contribution

Bikeride
The Kiss (ON SALE)
PS, US Praised by Uncut, MOJO, Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly,
CMJ, the L.A. Times, and many other publications, Bikeride pedals
along with their fifth long player, The Kiss - their first in over
four years.
The
Kiss takes off where 2002's Morning Macumba last left us, still showcasing
Bikeride's knack for adventure and exotica. Just as many of the songs
on Morning Macumba, were written abroad in Brazil and Peru, the music
on The Kiss was written while traveling around the world. The songs
were simmered in indigenous native spices, put through the Bicycle
Rider pop filter, and then spit out as only Bikeride can do.
But
please don't be confused. Bikeride, the band that put red, white,
and blue, on the map years before 9/11, remains dedicated to Americana
and the everlasting pop song. Listen to the countrified "A Dancer's
Feet Are Not So Neat" or the bubblegum pop of "She's Radioactive!"
Compared to bands as disparate as The Beatles, Pixies, Beck and Earth
Wind & Fire, Bikeride tackles just about every musical genre with
fun and precision.
The
new sound is not just American, but American Gothic. Bikeride has
embraced history. No, not the 15+ years they've been around, but the
days of yore. Listen to "There's Something Odd About Elizabeth".
It's Victorian, spooky, dreamy, and just might make you beseech Bikeride
to play your funeral. Listen to "Hole in My Eye". It'll
make you swing from a sail, drink Rum, and put on a blouse. (It's
that Pirate-y!) Then there's "Podiaphobia"- an epic five
minutes of prig-rock set amid maidens and castles- part Monty Python,
part Lord of the Rings. Sure to be a Renaissance Fair favorite.
Yes,
they've gotten darker but they haven't abandoned their sunny California
roots. Listen to "Your Lips and You", the first single off
The Kiss, and you'll see that Bikeride remains in top-pop-form. It's
a Revolver-esque sound collage where East meets West in an explosion
of strings and Santoors. Also, check out "The Mystery of Magnet
Power" and you'll see how only Bikeride can fuse influences as
dissimilar as Bowie and the musical Annie.
If you've been hungry for fresh Bikeride, this new record will appease
your appetite. It's hard to resist and soft as a Kiss.

of WOLF EYES. Housed in a massively ill fold-out six panel cover with
art by DENNIS TYFUS and pressed in a one-sided LP with an etching
on the B-side, the sonics match the sound of slowly rending circuit

chord of "Iron Man" with fluttering electronics that hover
in the air with all of the malevolent anti-gravity of leather wings.

Two Minutes to Midnight + BONUS SINGLE
PS, SWEDEN Special Offer: Initial orders will receive a free 2-song
CD-single featuring Jim's favorite Black Belt song, "Hold On"
plus "Noose", neither of which appear on the new album.
Black Belt traffic in gritty garage-rock heaviosity and dirigible
psychedelia, Swedish stonerrock with plenty of muscle, and a righteous
late-60s-early-70s vibe. Fans of fellow Scandinavians Elope, Motorpsycho
and The Soundtrack of Our Lives (and those bands' shared passions
for channelling rock gods of other eras) will find plenty to adore
here... If you are into big fuzzy guitars, fringe jackets, overdriven
vocals, frayed denim, sweet soul and tons of swagger look no further.
CD is packaged in an extremely plush full-color gatefold jacket with
a elegant velum wrap, while inside there's a booklet that folds out
in the shape of a cross and receives an official R Rating. Initial
orders will also receive a copy of their "Hold On" single
(PG-13) as a bonus, single features two awesome songs that don't appear
on any album. GROOVE MAGAZINE: "...A mix of fiery seventies hard
rock, psyched out mangle and a flirt with groovy soul that can make
your hips pop. But it is the energy that hits me right in my heart.
It is dirty like a coal miner, reaks of sweat like a festival fanatic
and snorts like a testosteron filled bull. Chose any song you like

Black To Comm
Wir können leider nicht etwas mehr zu tun...
PS, GERMANY "Wir können leider nicht etwas mehr zu tun..."
is the rather weird title for Black To Comm's 2nd Album release within
12 months, this time coming out on a gorgeous vinyl-only double-LP
with a beautifully strange gatefold sleeve in a limited edition of
500 copies. Black To Comm is the nom de plume for Hamburg's Dekorder
label head honcho Marc Richter's sonic voyages. In 2006 he released
a 7" lathe cut picture disc ("Levitation"), his debut
album "Rückwärts Backwards" on CD and very limited
vinyl and compilation tracks for the Finnish 267 Lattajjaa and Ukrainian
Quasipop labels. While the first album was mainly constructed from
dusty vinyl and shellac loops, the new album is based on "real"
instruments including several antique organs, electric harmonium,
acoustic & electric guitars, bells, clattery percussion, vintage
effect pedals and tape loops thereof. Richter builds up massive psychedelic
one-chord drones, minimal yet dense and heavily layered, full of spacious
details and swirling melodies buried within. Each track is slowly
building, drifting and floating hypnotically into a warm and shimmering
black ocean of sonic liquid, creating a mesmerizing and mysterious
mass of sound. While most of the works are thick monotone layers of
organic sound there's some sort of simple songwriting gleaming constantly
through the mist, making this a highly accessible drone album. Guest
musicians are Hamburg visual artist Renate Nikolaus on electric &
acoustic guitars and voice and electro-acoustic musician Gregory Büttner
on trumpet.

is every bit as bright, powerful, and catchy, with the addition of

Kele Okereke's interest in what he calls "the living noise of
a metropolis", this record captures every detail of daily life
in a modern city from the ebullient to the mundane. From the quiet
desolation of commuting to casual sex, from going out on a Friday

Circle
Miljard
PS, FINLAND A new Circle album is always cause for celebration around
these parts and this particular one gives us even more reason to get
giddy; two cds absolutely bursting with minimal chilly Finnish soundscapes.
Yes you heard me right, the kings of the new wave of Finnish heavy
metal have thrown down their guitars, kicked aside their Krautrock
leanings and picked up the piano to sculpt out a series of horizontally
leaning and deeply pensive pieces closer to say Willam Basinski or
Deaf Center than Neu! or Can. Conjuring up perfectly the icy Northern
European landscapes of their homeland, the band dispense with riffs
altogether in favour of looping textures and haunting field recordings.
The first disc, across its one hour duration explores quite magnificently
the piano, with compositions and improvisations edging on the subtlety
of Goldmund's 'Corduroy Road', yet adding layer upon layer of haunting
drone and worrying atmospherics giving the tracks a great weight.
In fact there's much in common with Angelo Badalamenti's 'Mulholland
Drive' score, or even the classic soundwork on David Lynch's similarly
gloomy 'Eraserhead', it's a common reference to say that something
is Lynchian, but Circle manage to share a common vision with Lynch
here, managing to achieve darkness without being camp and a dense
atmosphere without breaching on the industrial. This is only further
confirmed when you reach disc two, the most powerful of the two parts,
which uses what sounds like church bells and crackling old records
to push the atmosphere level to 11. Parts of the disc even lean toward
the classic work of pianist Harold Budd, or even Vangelis's seminal
crackly gem 'Memories of Green' from the Blade Runner soundtrack.
By the time you reach the final track, the 22 minute long shimmering
masterpiece 'Viitane', you will have probably ordered the band's entire
back catalogue; 'Miljard' is a bold and intense statement from one
of the world's most interesting acts, and should hopefully win them
an even more sizable fanbase. It seems like they can master every
style they approach so here's to another 20 years. Incredible stuff...

finest export have scaled back the krautrock and minimalist sounds
in favor of raging lunatic metal punk with indecipherable and insane
Finnish vocals, odd sounds, and amazingly tight musicianship, yet
what they play never comes close to standard fare. When you listen

Danny, a one-time cohort of Captain Beefheart, has stepped up the

Cornsican Paintbrush
Aquarian Hymns
PS, US The latest from the husband-and-wife team of BRAD and EDEN
ROSE (Digitalis, NORTH SEA, WAX GHOST, GOLDEN OAKS, etc.) under their
CORSICAN PAINTBRUSH moniker. Combining lush instrumentation with clattering
percussion and ramshackle beats, Corsican Paintbrush creates a new
world of sound out of old world technology. Swerving feverishly between
what could easily be chopped up Native American rhythms, sampled Celtic
melodies, and space-age funk played on trash heaps, the music of Corsican
Paintbrush is actually all of this and none of it. Aquarian Hymns
is nine tracks of gorgeously recorded acoustic grace; marked with
periodic bursts of lysergic freak-outs, from the sharpened slide guitar
strings and tired voice of "Break Through These Branches"
to the heavy accordion and woodwind drones of the closing track "Aquarius."

Dragon Or Emperor
S/T
PS, US DRAGON OR EMPEROR is the awesome two-piece lightning-bolt drums
& bass assault of AARON MOORE (VOLCANO THE BEAR, SONGS OF NORWAY)
on drums/vocals, and STEWART BRACKLEY (BLACK CARROT, Songs of Norway)
on bass guitar/vocals. Somewhat akin to a geeky Lightning Bolt in
thrift store suits loosening up and playing jazz-metal, with additional
manic Pere Ubu-style vocalizations, Moore beats absolute hell out
of his drum kit, whilst Brackley embarks on daring fretless excursions
to the absolute edges of what constitutes a rhythm. Dragon or Emperor
creates an enormous sound that marries their intense mixture of fun
and chaos. Aaron and Stewart have been friends for over 20 years,
and have previously played together (along with fellow Volcano the
Bear member, Nick Mott) in the improv jazz trio, Songs of Norway (Beta
Lactum Ring Records). However, it was when Moore heard Brackley sing
for the first time-with Black Carrot-that he knew the right thing
to do: form a band with him, and explore his new found voice.

PS, US International sounds homogenize through twisted, dirty avenues,
where the high-rolling boom-box dub kings cruise tropical boulevards,
tops down, stereos ablaze at twilight, while the jazzy ladies line
up. The Chicago trio's strange rawar style stretches the sonic palette
like Reed Richard's (Fantastic Four), whose creator Jack Kirby, plays
influence to vocalist Damon Lock's intricately woven album covers

Kicking off with a cyclic rendition of the classic Nusrat Fateh Ali
Khan track featuring vocals contributions from Pilot family members
Vinita Dade and 4-year-old Anurudh (pilot in training) singing over
a shimmering dulcimer led track. "EYES OF LOVE" Recording
very much with the spirit of Two-Tone in mind and the energy of early
Kinks, this uplifting summer groover is sung by Belle & Sebastian's
Stuart Murdoch & Sarah Martin. "IT'S IN THE HEART OF EVERYONE"
Simple Mathematics with former Lydia Lunch /Swans/Current 93 collaborator
Joe Budenholzer with harmonies from Karine Polwart -minus 4 equals

our man Joseph Budenholzer. "THE CITY OF LIGHT" The Go-Betweens
Robert Forster & Grant McLennan do a 'reading' of this miniscule
pop gem, 58 seconds of undiluted Pop to spring clean your mind! "NUCLEAR
WAR" Members of Sonic Youth (Thurston Moore/Kim Gordon), The
Fire Engines (Davy Henderson) and Stooges/Minutemen bass legend (Mike
Watt) pay homage to the spirit of jazz giant Sun Ra ,on this one of
his minimalist compositions from the 70's.This track also features
a rare recording of the 'fu-horn' performed by iconic radio producer
Stewart Cruickshank. "SHENANDOAH" This haunting folk song
features chilling vocals and waterfall piano by Karine Polwart alongside
young Glasgow improv percussionist Alex Neilson on loan from Scatter/Glasgow
Improviser's Orchestra. "FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS" This historic
track documents a genuine piece of 'instant composing' featuring a
live jam across the telephone exchange, Sushil K Dade performs on
acoustic guitar in Glasgow whilst Damo Suzuki (Can) listens to the
chords 'down the line' from his Cologne HQ and responds with his hauntingly

Songs For A Dog
PS, US A collection of solo songs by New York City's prolific MICHAEL
GIRA (SWANS, ANGELS OF LIGHT, Young God Records). On Songs for a Dog,
Gira has collected ten tracks that catch him in his purest form. Mostly
built around his guitar and voice in a home studio environment, the
songs here both expose the very kernels from which he usually works
from and illustrate only too perfectly how they can function without
the layers of sound he's also often fond of exploring. More importantly,
these songs capture an artist who seems forever capable of pushing
himself into new avenues and whose laurels consistently get cast aside
in the process. Imported from the UK. Limited edtion.

Greenham, Lily
Lingual Music
PS, US Britain's best known sound poet is Bob Cobbing, but it's hard
to come up with a list of other sound poets working in Britain in
the '60s and '70s. It's equally difficult to think of any female sound
poets working anywhere. LILY GREENHAM was Danish, but spent her childhood
in Vienna. After several relocations across Europe she settled in
London in 1972 with her British husband (musician and poet Peter Greenham),
where she lived until her death in 2001. Nearly all of her own writings
and compositions date from after her arrival in London, but prior
to her arrival in London she had been involved in two major European
art movements. The Wienner Group in the late 1950s and the "Groupe
de Recherche d'Art Visuel in 1964. In London she began to record her
own text based compositions that used a mixture of sound poetry techniques,
electronics and multi-tracking. The term 'lingual music' that she
coined for her compositions refers to her technique of using tape
loops of text to create complex and dense musical structures. This
DCD set compiles a wide variety of her own work (1968 and 1984), including
live solo performances, film soundtrack pieces, as well as many tape
pieces.

Holiday For Strings
S/T
PS, BELGIUM It may sound pretentious to say that CD is one of the
most exciting debut releases of this year. But as far as we know it
surely is. Think the mad guitars of a clean Sonic Youth mixed with
the groove and unlimited beats of an alternative Lee Perry or Animal
Collective. Swedish band Holiday for Strings is throwing infinite
melodies, humor, tensions and relief like no others ever did before.
CD is slowly becoming unforgettable after its first listen. Catchy
without being hip, HFS proves through their rhythms, guitars, vocals
that groove has its place among alternative post-pop, that funky tunes
and beats can be perfectly connected to everlasting guitar riffs.
Purely and simply outstanding... Mastered by Harris Newman (Constellation)
and designed by Hans Seeger (Pulseprogramming, Tortoise,...). "Swedish
connection appears in the form of the fabulously named Holiday for
Strings from Stockholm, whose deeply groovy "I got Two Hands"
sounds like an unholy alliance between The Monochrome Set and the

Human Eye
Dinosaur Bones + 2
PS, US Following the imminent collapse of Detroit's long-running punk
rock killers the Clone Defects, frontman Timmy Vulgar took a little
time off before he assembled the world's weirder Human Eye. Putting
the "what the fuck are they doing?!?" back in punk rock,
Human Eye is a psychedelic and synth-freak out organism with a sneering
skeleton that's trapped in a basement covered with Misfits posters
and Electric Eels bootleg tapes on the floor. The most punk-rooted
of the recent movement of new and thoroughly insane Detroit bands
who are drinking spray paint or Sparks (depending on which is cheaper)
and making really exciting, really fucked up new sounds. This 7"

Sound Inside
PS, BELGIUM It's always easy to compare a band to another but in this
case even if we can feel a lot of influent bands, we can't easily
describe the grace and beauty that touch Immune's wonderful official
debut Sound Inside. Magnificent guitars, piano melodies, smooth electronics,
strings and drums are melted in a thrilling imaginary score for a
sad but hopeful world. Some references that are usually mentioned
are Mark Hollis, Sigur Ros, Hood, Arab Strap or Elbow. Immune defines
a thin line between post-rock and sad post-electronic with its own
delicate wave of tenderness that will push you to remind all the souvenirs
of your childhood or the smell of winter falling leave in lonesome
woods. Simply superb. Immune was founded in 2001, in Lyon (France).
"As all the most beautiful stories, Sound Inside never last long
enough...but gives itself clues and evidences of eternity". ROCK
POST. "Think Hood, think tensions, think wide, think Lali Puna,
it's a melancholy that keep us immunized proving that there's more
than sound inside, there's also heat" - Eraserhead.

Kiev Cuando Nieva
S/T
PS, SPAIN Produced by Rafael Martinez del Pozo (JR), each musical
instrument seems to have achieved its due place by a force which has
been propelled by a persistent intensity which has made it fundamental.
As for the rest, that which was left it has been swiftly swept away
by the northern Cierzo wind, or even one from the steppe. Banjos,
faulty keyboards, drums which resound as if machinery, guitars that
find a space in which to dialogue between the ghostly reminder of
a bass that isn't there. The fragile voices make their way among this
estranged beauty, and speak of forest keepers, subalterns, trips to
hermitages, coincidences, and get-togethers with friends. The record
shapes up as the listening continues, like a panoramic view of a world
amazed by the smallest details, by the daily baroque, by the melancholy
and the humor.

Kuupuu
Unilintu
PS, GERMANY "Unilintu" is the second of two vinyl-only LP's
on the Dekorder label compiling the best material from Kuupuu's first
four CD-R and cassette releases, this time presenting a slightly darker
and even more coherent sonic vision compared to last year's gorgeous
"Yökehrä" LP which we sold out immediately (2nd
edition is now available). Here's what we said about the first LP:
Jonna Karanka aka Kuupuu is one of the main movers of the (deservedly)
much hyped Finnish Psychedelic Free Folk scene. Originally hailing
from Tampere she is known as a core member of Avarus, Anaksimandros,
Kukkkiva Poliisi and Maniacs Dream. She has recently started Hertta
Lussu Ässä with Lau Nau and Islaja and has collaborated
with Tomutonttu (aka Jan Anderzen of Kemialliset Ystävät)
and Paavi (as Lussu ja Paavi). This LP is a beautiful collection of
haunting home baked freeform folk songs, strange lo-fi loops, vocal
drones and psychedelic cut-ups, made using weirdly tuned plucked and
strummed strings, bells, clattery percussion, unidentifiable wind
instruments, backwards tape loops and a ton of other noisemakers played
and recorded by herself; accompanied by her distinctive voice in her
native Finnish language making the whole atmosphere even more haunting
and mysterious. Jonna Karanka creates an intimate space where the
listener feels like sitting next to her in a small chamber or outside
in the woods. References: Fursaxa, Vashti Bunyan, Kemialliset Ystävät,
Colleen, Animal Collective, Lau Nau, Jewelled Antler, Wooden Wand.
"Of all the many travelers in the Finnish psychedelia scene,
Kuupuu is surely one of the most enigmatic. (The Wire, September 2006).

La Buena Vida
Sencillos
PS, SPAIN Digibox with 5 CD singles. There is jovial cheer for the
festive season and we are happy to announce a special event. Many
people have waited years and years for this release to come out. Loyal
followers of pop heartthrobs La Buena Vida will want to rush out to
record stores to pick up this singles box set, which spans the band's
career from 1992-2000. A gladiatorial thumbs-up gesture from the public
is expected on this occasion as most of the material included in this
special and deluxe box set is sold out (EP tracks only available on
vinyl and classified "on the long deleted" and "impossible
to find") including a whole load of rarities and cover versions.
"Sencillos" contains 5 CDs that rescue the old times of
the best Spanish band of the 1990's. La Buena Vida were the definitive
Spanish cult indie pop band, marking the beginning of the smooth guitar
pop explosion and seminal to the effervescence of Donosti-pop (Family,
Le Mans, Daily Planet and El Joven Bryan). Seen as Siesta heavyweights
they remained with us from 1992 to 2003 and left a trademark sound
and a formidable discography. Their tasty songs have made them as
a historic name with a devoted loyal fan base and they have sparked
an underground movement. The early material is a riot of exuberant
energy, taking stylistic cues from peers like The Smiths, Orange Juice,
BMX Bandits or New Order to the adored big names (Beatles, Love, Beach
Boys, Nick Drake). Although they are sometimes pigeonholed as cutie
twee-pop, their pieces range from elegant bossa-nova to Motown-soul,
from chamber pop to danceable synth-pop. Their cult status in Spain
is similar to other examples in Britain such as The Smiths, Belle
and Sebastian, Cure o Prefab Sprout. The outfit was formed in San
Sebastian during the summer of 1988. The line-up was singer Irantzu
Valencia, guitarists Mikel Aguirre and Javier Sanchez, bassist Pedro
San Martin, keyboardist Borja Sanchez, and drummer Raul Sebastian.
They finally signed to the fledgling Siesta label in 1992. CD 1: October
1992- the legendary "Historia de un verano" 7"-vinyl
EP was released. The quintessential debut EP remains vibrant and punchy
today as the best example of innocent, sparkling, iridescent, infectious
and refreshing pop, like sunlight on water (Hoy es domingo/ El tren/
Historia de un verano/ Mi reloj). Not strangely it was sold out in
just a few months. We have added Tardes de café to the original
tracklisting. This song was featured in the Seven Summers compilation
(Tweenet / Kindercore) for US and Germany. CD 2: .La Buena Vida's
debut LP followed in October 1993, and seven months later the band
resurfaced with the EP Mira a tu Alrededor inc. 4 exclusive tracks
under another extraordinary jacket artwork by Javier Aramburu. Again
the seven inch vinyl got immediately sold-out. The overall tone of
the record is a sunshine day with shades that accentuate the brilliance.
Each track (Mira a tu alrededor/ Malabares/ Velomar/ La gran familia)
is a three minute burst of pop heaven. A bonus track Bajo el paraguas
originally included in the Europop EP (Siesta 15) completes the CD.
CD 3: September 1995- Magnesia (Magnesia/ Menta y agua/ A pesar de
todo/ En bicicleta 1995) was the new pop effort which rocketed the
band (being fashioned while being elegant and still having a very
eighties feeling). A perfect record for fans of any form of contemporary
or retro electronic music, we would dare to say that this was released
at the peak of the band's work. The epitome of pop perfection. CD
4: May 2000, Maxi-CD/-EP "Eureka" featuring sophisticated
electro pop (Otra vez tú/ Guillermine). As extra tracks, two
well crafted and melodic pop gems that appeared in some Siesta mythical
compilations Dulce y callado (Expreso) and Mil ventanas abiertas (Sombrero).
You'll find yourself humming these indelible tunes all day long...
CD 5: Cover Versions: 1994- That summer feeling (Jonathan Richman)
and Candy Says (Velvet Underground). 1995- Here, there and everywhere
(The Beatles). 1997- Mas yo no tengo nada (Formula V) and a song inspired
by the film "Night of the Hunter" from Charles Laughton,
H. Powell. 1998- Old man (Love). 2000- Más dura será
la caída (Gabinete Caligari) and Cómo pudiste hacerme
esto a mí (Dinarama). If you are a LBV fan or completist, this
release is absolutely worthy of purchasing.

Larval/Bill Brovold
Surviving Death/AliveWhy
PS, US Fifth album from the ever changing lineup featuring some of
the best musicians in Detroit and led by composer BILL BROVOLD. It
is an amalgamation of styles and approaches to music, from quiet and
thoughtful passages to an aggressive onslaught of screaming horns,
guitars and assorted strings. This new studio recording & a second
disc covering seven years of potent live work both showcase their
unique experimental rock that often combines wall-of-sound guitars,
bass and drums with saxes and violin, and is very direct and powerful.
Brovold studied painting of the School of Visual Arts in NYC and received
his degree in 1982. While there he was making music (and sounds) for
film makers and performance artists. in 1983 he joined the ensemble
of experimental/no- wave legend Rhys Chatham as guitarist and stayed
on until 1988. In 1994 he moved to the Detroit area, where he formed
Larval. He is still active in the making of visual arts, and continues
making art and exhibiting around the country as well as making music
for film makers and dancers. "Bill Brovold's music blows me away.
Larval is the shit."- ZORN. "The band completely eschews
solos, or any other display of instrumental might.... Larval are willing
to sacrifice the glory of the individual for a tightly wound whole."-

Les Breastfeeders
Les Matins de Grand Soirs
PS, US Montreal's 60s mod rock sextet is back full force with a new
album that serves justice to the bands sound & energy. Franco-rock,
gorgeously garagey, frenetic & contagious. "If albums could
smoke, 'Les Matins de Grands Soirs would be a smokestack in a world
of skinny cigarette fashionistas. Instead of hiding behind smoke clouds,
let me be clear: I really love this record- [...] This will surely
prove to be a significant release, elevating the sextet into some
very combustible (and electrically charged) rock n roll company..."

Leviathan
Blind Wound
PS, US LEVIATHAN is the audial bastard spawn of the musician known
as WREST (also main-man behind LURKER OF CHALICE and member of TWILIGHT).
Cruel and boundary less, these Leviathan tracks continue to push the
band into the uncharted waters of punishing black metal art. Of particular
note is the fact that these Leviathan tracks represent the first time
ever that Wrest has played live/acoustic drums on a Leviathan album.
Although each Leviathan album released is a credible, important achievement
The Blind Wound material is outstandingly dark and impressive. Their
is a decidedly more "human" vibe here but fear not its still
grim and cold as ever. This material was initially available on a
split CD with Sapthuran but now is available on its own on 180-gram
virgin vinyl.

Lilja, Tobias
Time is on My Side
PS, US "Time Is on My Side" is Swedish experimental composer
Tobias Lilja's second full-length album and first on n5MD. This follow
up to his sonic debut "Ex-leper" (nonresponse) has all the
controlled visions of decay as its predecessor but with the addition
of Tobias' desperate yet controlled vocals. These vocals bring to
the fore-front a humanistic layer of melody to the tonal blizzard
of Tobias' music yielding new dimensions which are to most, unclassifiable.
Said by the artist to be somewhat loosely inspired by some of David
Sylvian's recent work, this comparison though is almost a moot point
due to Tobias' originality in his instrumental composition and his
vocal delivery, melody and cadence. "Time Is on My Side"
is truly in a world of its own. A teetering balance of contradictions...
Frigid yet in some way invitingly warm, desperate with a false sense
of hope, other-worldly yet somehow familiar, this balance is where
Tobias Lilja excels and is proof of an artist who has found "his"
sound. "Time Is on My Side" is one of those rare works of
art that comes along to help you through those dark times when everything
seems hopeless...

PS, US This multi-instrumentalist Swede builds songs using a modest
home studio set-up. As such, he's released four albums on CD-R in
the last few years and has managed to sell several thousand of them
pretty much on his own. His music has been described as soulful indie
folk with a powerful mini
orchestra. Layer upon layer, adding instrumentation and vocals, these
songs seem to bloom like time-lapse photography, depicting glimpsed
scenes of
modern disaffection and timeless yearning. "Loney, Noir"
is at once effervescent and resigned, exhilarating and melancholy,
joyous and confessional.

Marcia Blaine School For Girls, The
Halfway Into The Woods
PS, UK With a name based on the fictional school in 'The Prime Of
Miss Jean Brodie', The Marcia Blaine School For Girls is actually
comprised of three Glaswegian lads who have been forging their own
particular approach to electronic music for the past few years, melding
such disparate styles as American minimalism, Detroit techno and the
blunted groove of dancehall and then adding their own distinct signature
treatments of crushed rhythms and affecting haunting melodies. Since
their inception they have released a steady stream of material for
labels including Static Caravan, Benbecula, Awkward Silence, Dalriada,
Expanding, Struktur and Stuff Records, and also previously curated
a compilation of Scottish electronica for Highpoint Lowlife. 'Halfway
Into The Woods' is their debut full-length, and finds them incorporating
vocals for the first time, and expanding upon the recurring themes
and ideas hinted at on previous releases. There's a whole rich seam
of electronic history running through this album from Orbital to Autechre,
through to the modern IDM players.

PS, UK Midlake are 5 young ingenious young men hailing from the musically

eccentric and endearing tale about a small-town balloon maker. Led
by melancholy brass, off-kilter keys, and Tim Smith's fragile vocals,
this would melt even the hardest of hearts. The (equally eccentric)
video for Balloon Maker was directed by Jason Lee (star of Almost
Famous, Vanilla Sky etc). Midlake are his favourite band and he kindly
gave of his services free of charge. Difficult to pigeonhole, Midlake
have crafted a stunning sound that combines bittersweet psychedelic
melodies with inspired electronica and warm acoustic sounds, drawing
comparisons with the likes of The Flaming Lips and Grandaddy. 'B'
sides on the CD single include the 'Balloon Maker' video as well as
3 superb new tracks.

Moskitoo
Drape
PS, US 12k kicks off its 11th year with a new release that takes the
label down new sonic pathways. Caught between the organic and electronic
minimalism that 12k is known for and the unconventional Japanese pop
musings and songwriting style of Happy, Moskitoo's Drape is an infectiously
strange, bleepy, and dreamy debut release. Sanae Yamasaki (Moskitoo)
hails from Sappporo, Japan in Hokkaido, the country's northern-most
prefecture. Perhaps a reaction to the cool climate of her home, her
multi-instrumental talents bring a wide range of warm tones and textures
to Drape by means of guitar, metallophone, organ, drum machines, synthesizers
and nostalgic toy instruments. Yamasaki's gentle, airy vocals play
off of broken beats and aqueous sound drops evoking half-awake memories
lost and found. Influenced by visual art (she painted the cover image),
modern electronic music and abstract pop, such as Eno's explorations
in the 1970's, Yamasaki does not set out to write a particular style
of music, but rather, lets her creative process emerge naturally,
following whims and experiments. Drape is, by far, the most structured
and song written release on 12k to date. It's a release that signifies
not a complete directional change for the label but the creative go-ahead
to add new nuances to the already established sound that the label
has pioneered.

warriors for the now glam aesthetic. Featuring Terry Six (frontman/guitar
hero/vocals), Gabe Lageson, (guitar/vocals), Colin Jarrell (bass/vocals),
Alan Mansfield (drums), and Brian Lelko (keys). It’s straight-ahead-stadium-rock-glam,
led by a three-vocal attack, with amazing hooks. Their sound is full

Oram, Daphne
Oramics
PS, US DAPHNE ORAM is best known for her design of her Oramics system,
and also for co-founding the BBC Radiophonic Workshop in 1957, but
until now the only easily available piece of music by her on CD has
been the 8-minute long "Four Aspects." There was also a
7-inch EP from 1962 on HMV, released as part of the Listen, Move and
Dance series that was specifically designed to help children dance.
Although the short pieces on this record are very basic it could be
argued that this is the first ever electronic dance record! Now for
the first time is a survey of nearly all the major pieces that she
produced since her departure from the BBC in January 1959 until her
final tape piece in 1977. The two and a half hours of music on this
2CD set covers the whole range of Oram's post BBC output. All of the
music is electronic with some occasional use of real instruments,
especially small percussion and piano frame. There is also some use
of musique concrte techniques. The works fall roughly into the following
categories: works for TV and cinema advertising, film soundtracks,
music for theatre productions, installations and exhibitions as well
as concert pieces and several studio experiments.

Others, The / Sans / Sungragon
Listen to the Sky: The Complete Recordings 1964-69
PS, UK Listen To The Sky is a fascinating journey through the changing
musical landscape of the '60s as realised by a group of young musicians
from Richmond, Surrey. Influenced by local heroes The Rolling Stones
and The Yardbirds (who wasn't?), they started out as The Others in
1963. Their guitarist had been kicked out of Hampton Grammar School
for wearing his hair too long and they were soon signed up by the
Bryan Morrison/Jimmy Duncan agency in London, home of The Pretty Things.
With their R&B credentials in place, their first single was a
respectable reading of the Bo Diddley staple "Oh Yeah" in
1964. Sadly, various band members were pressured into quitting the
band and continuing their studies and the band was reborn with a more
pronounced Who/pop-art influence, first as The Army, then as Sands.
They were managed by the Marquee Organization and enjoyed a residency
at the esteemed London venue in late 1966/early 1967 before being
snapped up by Brian Epstein and Robert Stigwood at NEMS who put them
on stage at his one of their infamous Saville Theatre nights as support
to Cream and Edwin Starr. By the time they came to record their next
single, Sands had lost band members to the Jeff Beck Group and Procol
Harum (then at number one!). Stigwood insisted they record "Mrs
Gillespie's Refrigerator", a tune by his new darlings The Bee
Gees but the B-side, "Listen To The Sky", is all their own
work... with a little help from Holst's "Mars God of War"
from The Planet Suite. The track has since become an acknowledged
classic of British psychedelic pop, making regular appearances on
compilations such as the Nuggets 2 and Mojo magazine's Acid Drops
And Space Dust box sets. Following Epstein's death, interest in Sands
disappeared and half the band quit, leaving just two members to forge
ahead as Sundragon. Signed to MGM and assigned to producer Derek Lawrence,
they were convinced to cover The Lemon Pipers' recent US smash "Green
Tambourine" as their debut and Sundragon's excellent version
became a minor UK hit in 1968. The album that followed features further
US covers ("So You Wanna Be A Rock 'n' Roll Star", "Windy")
alongside strong psychorientated originals ("Five White Horses",
"Look At The Sun", "Peacock Dress") with muscular
musical support from the nascent Deep Purple. As was so often the
case, neither the album nor the follow-up singles fared very well.
A handful of pseudonym singles (High Noon, The Cruisers, McClintock)
followed before the close of the decade saw this particular musical
storybook close with it. - Features all the original '60s releases
by The Others, Sands and Sundragon! - First time on CD for almost
all of these 23 tracks! - Includes four previously unreleased bonus
tracks! - Features R&B belter "Oh Yeah", psych-pop classic
"Listen To The Sky", soft-pop favourite "Far Away Mountain"
and bona fide UK hit "Green Tambourine"! - In-depth liner
notes by Stefan Granados featuring all-new interview material with
original band members! - Remastered in the usual astounding Rev-Ola
style! - A must for all fans of British '60s pop, psych, soft-pop,
R&B, blue-eyed soul and even Deep Purple!
