Parasol New Arrivals • February 12, 2008

Hello,

Well, it’s Tuesday again. Can you believe it? Is it me or do these winter weeks just blur into one another? Well friends, I believe they do. The good thing is I have my trusty Band CDs by my side along with the Flying Burrito Brothers albums coming in a close second to drive my co-workers crazy. You know, it’s the small things in life that make me smile.

Yeah, yeah. Out with the old, in with the new. I know, I know. In your travels down yonder, be sure to pay close attention to the new offerings from Big Fresh, Adorable, Gown, Acid Mothers Temple (DVD), Fern Knight and Casiotone For The Painfully Alone (picture disc).

Stay warm,

Roy & Paul

a.P.A.t.T.
Black and White Mass
PS, UK Exploring similar landscapes to Frank Zappa - minus the virtuoso elements - Liverpool-based a.P.A.t.T. are a bewildering and completely original two to seven piece band, utilising all available genres to create a daft and beautiful music. 'Black and White Mass' sets a new standard in home entertainment, featuring some of a.P.A.t.T.'s most accessible compositions to date, whilst still retaining an element of surprise. Some bands are just damned impossible to classify: a.P.A.t.T. are a (usually) 6 peice amalgamation of all that has come before & all that will slowly catch up in the end. Beyond genre defying: every instrument and style you can think of, mashed up together in jawdropping live performances. The experimental and chaotic beeps, buzzes and blips of a.P.A.t.T., (described on the BBC Merseyside website as sounding like Frank Zappa having a fist fight with Mighty Mouse) have steadily built up a growing army of admirers. They were featured on the promotional video for Liverpool's Capital of Culture bid, and have recently staged a multi-media installation called 'Quartet', featuring four films projected whilst the band performed inside. As if this wasn't enough, they even found time to compose the incidental music for the BBC Radio Merseyside alternative music show, PMS. a.P.A.t.T. officially began with the completion of a C90 cassette tape in 1998. It was decided from the offset that the way the music was formed on this tape (disjointed, non-specific, omni-style) was to influence the revolving multi-instrumentalist approach, and dictate the 'anti-hierarchical' line-up of the act. It was not until 2002 and the introduction of digital recording techniques that a.P.A.t.T. were to make an 'official' release. Following several lineup changes, software changes, hardware changes, various support slots and a Dutch tour, a.P.A.t.T. teamed up with London label, Lowsley Sounds, to release their first full album, (L.P.) in 2004. Although hopes were high for this release and it sold well, a.P.A.t.T. were never satisfied with the final outcome, wanting to push things further musically. 2006 saw more line up changes and the continuation of the recordings for that "perfect album". Which brings us to "Black and White Mass". "a.P.A.t.T. are a motherfucking experience. Probably the only UK band i can think of to come up with their vision of the dark, vicious and fuck me, rather scary vision of the ACID PUNK dropped onto us from the visions of Gibby from the Butthole Surfers. We love them. You need to hear this. It's insane" [Alan Mcgee, Creation/Poptones].

Abrahams, Chris + Mike Cooper
Oceanic Feeling-Like
PS, AUSTRALIA "The sea pronounces something, over and over, in a hoarse whisper; I cannot quite make it out." ~Annie Dillard It's this musical whisper that is amplified on Oceanic Feeling-Like, as Italian based musician Mike Cooper and Australia's Chris Abrahams unite for the first time to create what can only be described as a picturesque horizon of melodic ocean swell. Stretching out horizon-wide, Oceanic Feeling-Like is generously colored with Cooper's unique guitar approaches and Abrahams distinctive piano motions. Both musicians bring with them a wealth of technique and improvised flare that is brought to bear over a series of island like compositions, that eventually form an unusually divergent sound archipelago. Recorded in Sydney at Abrahams' home studio, each of the pieces explores a unique post-marine sound space - that's both reflective and reflexive. Truly a release that ebbs and flows in the best way imaginable. An ocean of sound awaits - sometimes calm and flowing, occasionally choppy and unexpected, but always experiential. Mike Cooper for the past 40 years British guitarist Mike Cooper has traced a path completely his own. An international musical explorer, performing and recording, solo and in a number of inspired groupings and a variety of genres. Initially a folk-blues guitarist and singer songwriter his work has diversified to include improvised and electronic music, live music for silent films, radio art, field recording and sound installations. Chris Abrahams "(His) relentless and steady patterning started to metamorphose the nature of the piano, the upper chords sounding like a distant locomotive hoot, and then an accordion weaving in and out of a shimmering bank of flutes". The Wire, UK 2001.

Antarctica Takes It!
The Penguin League
PS, US Debut album by a four piece, from Santa Cruz, CA, whose joyous folk pop has been compared to Sufjan Stevens, The Decemberists and Beirut. A bedroom band put together by 22-year-old Dylan McKeever, Antarctica Takes It! recorded the songs on "The Penguin League" straight onto a friend's laptop, using the computer's internal microphone. No problem if you're a straightforward rock'n'roll band, but Dylan's songs boasted an array of accordions, glockenspiels, cellos, ukuleles, trumpets, harmonicas and pianos. The result should have been extremely lo-fi - and in places it is (you can actually hear the instruments battling for airspace at some points). But, overall, thanks to Dylan's patience and prodigious talent, "The Penguin League" conjures a tiny orchestra out of thin air. From the opening "I'm No Lover", which sees mariachi horns collide with a rattling folk melody, to the magical "Flightless Birds", which transports "Pet Sounds" to the Antarctic wastes, this is a record that sounds like it's anywhere but a suburban bedroom on the American West Coast. In fact, lyrically and spiritually, Antarctica Takes It! reside, as their names suggests, slightly further south. The album's highlight, "Antarctica", sees the band knee deep in a polar expedition, while the photos for the cover and CD booklet were provided by Dr Samuel Silverstein, who headed the 1967 American Antarctic Mountaineering Expedition. Dr Silverstein also writes about his photos in the booklet, which makes this the first album to be released with sleeve notes by an Antarctic explorer. Press/Radio: Reviews in Uncut, NME, The Guardian, Plan B, Pitchfork, PopMatters, with more TBC.

Antietam
Opus Mixtum
PS, US First album in their 25 year career that combines the ferocity of their calling card stage show, the quiet acoustic moments of TARA KEY's solo recordings, their pristine pop & sprawling instrumental ambience. Flying just below the radar for more than 20 years, but always making uncompromising music and maintaining a deeply devoted fan base throughout the world, Antietam play raw rock and roll that is nearly impossible to define. Originally, the double-CD, triple-LPOpus Mixtum was supposed to be two separate, distinct releases: one a powerful rock record tracked at the band's new home-away-from-home, Brooklyn's Seaside Lounge, with producer (and now auxiliary live band member) Josh Clark, tracked on two-inch tape in a beautiful live room and finally allowing the band to truly capture the fire of their live performances; and the other a sprawling, loopy and diverse instrumental album constructed piece by piece in Tara and Tim's digital home studio. Somewhere along the way the albums became tangled together. The title Opus Mixtum comes from a method of laying brick in ancient Rome that combined rectangular and diagonal patterns, but the band uses it to connote the mix of three styles -- Antietam rock, the acoustic pop of Tara Key solo releases, and the instrumental soundtracks of their lives. Piece in Mark Howell's horns, Katie Gentile's (Run On, Special Pillow) violins, and Rick Rizzo (Eleventh Dream Day) on stunt guitar and the album flows effortlessly through its varying moods-- instrumental passages disappear into hooky pop, Tara's defining guitar is enveloped by Hammond organ or a lush string passage, and then the pounding rock and roll of the classic trio punches through. So you get pop with "Turn It on Me," rock with "Pennants and Flags," and just pure melody with "March Echo" and "Steel G." As they say in Louisville, if you don't like the weather, wait ten minutes.

Bell, The
Make Some Quiet
PS, US The Bell's new album Make Some Quiet might take you back to a time when you were first discovering bands that acted like the ideal soundtrack to your post-teenage life. We think of Echo and the Bunnymen and The Cure, on our trip down fond memory lane... NPR: "The Swedish pop group The Bell doesn't have a name for its drum machine, but if the Bunnymen are going to deny Echo its place in history, this new trio should snap it up. It's not just The Bell's drum machine that gives it a right to the Echo name. The group's wiry guitar-rock also recalls many of the bands that came up in the wake of, or were contemporaries to, the Bunnymen, such as House of Love, The Mighty Lemon Drops and The Church. The Bell's debut CD, Make Some Quiet, draws on these influences throughout, and modern music fans will likely hear Interpol in the group's post-punk pop."

PS, US New album from Lexington, KY avant-garde superheroes Big Fresh, featuring members of The Apples In Stereo and Ullysses. Crystalline pop rainbows beamed through a prism. An ambitious tapestry of danceable hits, bubbling soundscapes, electric light harmonies, and synthetic orchestrations from Lexington, Kentucky's avant-garde heroes (including members of The Apples in stereo and Ulysses). Produced by Big Fresh in their home laboratory over a seven-year period, and mastered by Robert Schneider (The Apples in stereo, Elephant 6), the shining sounds of this album will transport you to another world. LEXINGTON HERALD-LEDGER: "For more than a decade, the band has mixed summery soul, pop, dance grooves and more into a bright sound all its own. Within B.F.F.'s grooves...you sense a spring thaw is at hand." OPTICAL ATLAS: "B.F.F. plays like a great lost prog-rock album, as though Brian Wilson had tried to revisit Smile in the 70's with help from ELO."

British Sea Power
Do You Like Rock Music?
PS, US New album! ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "The band has crafted a wintry, nuanced, and bold collection of epic songs that integrate the sweeping theatricality of Arcade Fire-era indie rock without all of the insularity. This is music made for people, not a person. The sound effects, choral vocals, strings, and feedback that populate DYLRM feel organic and necessary rather than just pasted in for drama's sake. There has always been a sort of rough-hewn sepia-tone unity to BSP songs, and that odd, inclusive wartime fervor permeates each track." FOUR 1/2 STARS!

Bubblegum Lemonade
Ten Years Younger
PS, US Magnificent debut release from a 60's influenced indie-pop affair from Glasgow, Scotland. Bubblegum Lemonade is principally a man called Laz, a 12-string Rickenbacker enthusiast with more than a few Velvet Underground, Byrds, Jesus and Mary Chain, and Razorcuts records in his collection. Title track 'Ten Years Younger' updates the Mary Chain's take on The Velvets with nice bursts of electronica and beautiful female backing vocals courtesy of Sandra from fellow Glaswegians Strawberry Whiplash. 'The Tomorrow People' is a wonderful 60's-drenched jangle pop gem that should please even the most ardent Byrds or Razorcuts fan, while 'Unsafe at Any Speed' is Ralph Nader meets the Mary Chain with liberal dollops of reverb and distortion. Finally, 'That Thing You Do!' is a glorious cover of the title song from the mid-90's hit movie of the same name. Written by Adam Schlesinger (Ivy, Fountains of Wayne), the song was originally credited to the fictitious band The Wonders and needed to be roughed up a bit as it is here. With insanely catchy songs, masterful 12-string guitars, shimmering pop melodies, and the feedback drenched sounds of the Mary Chain, Bubblegum Lemonade is an extraordinary addition to the Matinée roster proving that old school indie will never go out of style. Limited to 1000 copies in custom minijacket sleeve.

Bulat, Basia
Oh, My Darling
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Basia Bulat had already made quite a splash in Britain and her native Canada before her full-length debut, Oh, My Darling, even made it out to the United States. And it's easy to see why she's been so popular. She has an easygoing, friendly style that borrows heavily from the chick-rock craze of the 1990s, songs full of warm melodies and sweet vocals. But where someone like Natalie Merchant was able to delve into the complexities of life and love intelligently and without relying too much on sentimentality or cliché, Bulat's lyrics and instrumental lines aren't quite able to push past those barriers. Instead, it is her singing that is the most appealing thing about Oh, My Darling, an alluring, folky vibrato-filled mix of the aforementioned Natalie Merchant, Antony Hegarty, fellow Canadian Serena Ryder, and even, strangely enough, Ted Leo."

Down To The Wire
PS, US Luis Garban of Venezuela has released heaps of records these past couple years for labels such as Ad Noiseam, Peace-off, Intellectual Violence, Mirex, Cock Rock Disco & Wrong Music, but for Terminal Dusk he reveals his passion for dubstep. 'Down To The Wire' contains high energy levels, sick low bass and brilliantly selected reggae samples. This album is executed perfectly and includes remixes from two fellow dubstep heads: Atki2 & Starkey. Side A kicks off with 'Maybe Next Time' dropping the warbly and brutal bass and some hot B-boy samples. Give in to the head nod effect. Next up is 'Keep On Truckin' with a wall of low end synth leads & Bollywood style atmospheres. Rounding off the A side is 'Knock Yuh Out' and it's a badman, turning up the energy. Flip for the B side and 'Everything Is A New Surprise' kicks in with an ultra disgusting bassline & pitched up bongos, massive! Next are the remixes, Starkey starts it off with his remix of 'Knock Yuh Out' which takes the original to another level, slows it down a bit, and offers some proper dubstep swagger. Atki2 finishes the record with his rendition of 'Keep On Truckin', bringing the Bristol styles, a classic remix.

Carrots
Anthology
PS, JAPAN An anthology of the best songs of genius Spanish psychedelic pop band, Carrots, who designed soundscapes full of colored fantasy and baroque flavor. They wear their influences--the Beatles and the Beach Boys--on their sleeves, bridging genres and generations with tinges of funk, rock, and (gasp) country. Much to our regret, they have broken up, so you can regard the stamp sheet artwork as a bittersweet souvenir. Jangling electric and acoustic guitars, breezy vocals and even breezier harmonies (we're talking 'Breakfast In America'), eyelash-fluttering synths and piano, the good vibes flowing from the speakers are intoxicating! How is it that one band can sound like Squeeze and Stereolab and Supergrass and The Beach Boys and The Buggles and The Byrds, at the same time? Heck, we' ve already tagged them with some respectable names, yet still feel compelled name-drop a few more, the likes of Sloan, Paul McCartney, Elton John, Bikeride, Supertramp, Primal Scream, Kevin Ayers, The Posies' happiest songs, they all figure in here, with mucho gusto! Carrots is dead, long live Carrots!

Cave, Nick & Warren Ellis
Assassination of Jesse James
PS, US 2007 soundtrack to the acclaimed film starring Brad Pitt. The soundtrack's composers, Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, come from the internationally celebrated bands Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds, The Dirty Three and Grinderman. Cave and Ellis composed, played and produced this compelling and intense soundtrack for director Andrew Dominik's savage tale of the true West, The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford. This soundtrack perfectly captures the charismatic and unpredictable nature of the film's central protagonist. Like the film, Cave and Ellis' music cuts through the mythic figure of Jesse James to reveal the complex, contradictory man beneath. Daring and passionately delivered, this beautiful soundtrack retains its captivating power even without the benefit of Dominik's images. BBC: "Starring Brad Pitt as Jesse James and Casey Affleck as his devoted but deadly follower Robert Ford, Andrew Dominik's epic Western demands a soundtrack to match its scope. If anyone is up to the task it's Nick Cave and Bad Seed / Dirty Three maestro Warren Ellis, men who understand the outlaw mentality better than most musicians working today. Expansive, evocative violin and piano ensure that the listener doesn't miss the visuals: but this music also creates enough atmosphere all on its own."

Dengue Fever
Venus On Earth
PS, US There is virtually no other band in the world playing "Khmer Rock," the style of 1960s Cambodian rock derived from Armed Forces Radio in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. Sophomore album features eleven original songs that expand on the band's sound but will please hardcore fans of both the group & the genre. PREFIX MAG: "Though constantly hailed by local outlets like the Los Angeles Times as the city's most "original pop band," the Cambodian-American psyche-surf rock quintet has sat patiently at the precipice of a national break for several years now. The group shifted into overdrive the last two years: an appearance on the Broken Flowers soundtrack; a documentary about singer Chhom Nimol's homecoming and the band's first trip to Cambodia, called Sleepwalking Through the Mekong; and now its third album, Venus on Earth. On it, Nimol's gorgeous Khmer and English vocals are paired with the band's inventive blend of garage rock, Cambodian folk and Ethio-jazz."

Differnet
Collapsing Universe
PS, SWEDEN "Differnet's 2007 album finds the Swedish quartet again grappling with compositions that don't quite comfortably fit into any obvious form of popular music-crackling sounds of insects and general everyday noise meshes with slow cascades of synth strings and an extremely slow, deliberate rhythm before suddenly breaking into a vocal and drums break that could be a nervous soundtrack to a car chase. And this is all on the first song "Pattern of Parklands," which still doesn't describe everything in the piece-without specifically pushing sonic boundaries Differnet here again demonstrate more of the possibilities to be found in flowing collages of styles that reincorporate familiar rock, dance and other moves into a more modern approach." - Ned Raggett, All Music Guide. "They're almost like a Friendly Noise version of the Knife, but more personal. Includes a killer cover of Eurhythmics' 'Savage!'" - Other Music, NYC Influences: Throbbing Gristle, Franz Schubert, Cocteau Twins, Oval, Pet Shop Boys, Bernard Parmegiani, Einstuerzende Neubauten, New Order, Wire, Pierre Henry, Propaganda, Durutti Column... TRACK LIST: 1. Patterns of Parklands 2. Caring Arms 3. Savage 4. Prediction and Event 5. Survival Kit 6. Electricity (is Not What it Used to Be) 7. Stadium 8. A Fairy Tale

Dirty On Purpose
Like Bees EP
PS, US Five brand new songs, including a cover of Real Life's 80s hit "Send Me An Angel". PITCHFORK: "Brooklyn's Dirty on Purpose returns with a second EP, just as big a reminder of the band's past and potential as Hallelujah Sirens, an LP also on the cusp of something great. "Back to Sleep", a standout track here, has been around since about 2005, and it returns, re-produced, a little more precise, deliberate, and a touch slower than the first version. It was always one of the loveliest, most promising of the band's tracks, a long hangover nap that coddles the listener with a languorous guitar pattern dipped in the sweet, echoed flavor that has come to define the band's sound."

Dominique A
Sur Nos Forces Motrices
PS, SPAIN Four concerts were recorded and trawled through to pick out the best of the best: those moments when the group played perfectly, captivated by and focused on the music; when it played at its best without sacrificing the level of energy that simply makes a concert; when they struck that perfect balance between the brutal, wild side, when the group really puts its foot down, and the subtlety of, at times sophisticated, arrangements, accompanied by brass and keyboards. Yes, but is it a "greatest hit" or not? Let's say it sounds like one massively, but Dominique clearly isn't making it a question of principle. For Dominique, a live version must enhance or surpass the original version. In that respect, we can be reassured. Dominique and his group have come up with a bunch of new ideas. Meaning that this album sweeps through the guy's entire career. No album is forgotten - some songs even sprout new limbs, like L'Amour, squarely presented as an overture. The pillars of his work are all here. Le courage des oiseaux, so often reinvented, has been turned here into rock-funk; La mémoire neuve, Pour la peau, Antonia are al included. The nostalgic side of Dominique A, which he could hardly convey through silence, comes out in Tout sera comme avant and Music hall. Less well known, Le commerce de l'eau and the very rare Empty white blues captivate. Lastly, as a bonus free gift, two unpublished titles have been concocted: Revoir les choses and the highly literary and deeply moving Marina. So there you have it, a new disc from Dominique A boasting no fewer than fifteen titles. A fully rounded disc that should appeal beyond his audience of fans, so much does he go beyond the famous distinction of new "chanson française" to serve up a platter of songs that are simply superb, with singing that is at times soothing and absorbing, rustled up by a top-flight quartet of musicians. It's the precise moment and the ideal way to discover or rediscover the artist that is Dominique A.

Egg
The Civil Service
PS, UK EGG were exponents of the so-called "Canterbury" style of rock music and were focused around the compositional and keyboard playing skills of Dave Stewart (later in HATFIELD & THE NORTH) and Mont Campbell and Clive Brooks. The band recorded two superb albums for Decca Records between 1969 & 1971 before going their separate ways. In 1974 they recorded their final album for the newly established Virgin Record label. Featuring guest musicians such as STEVE HILLAGE and members of the unique HENRY COW, "The Civil Surface" is now regarded as a classic of the "Canterbury" and "Progressive" genres. This ESOTERIC RECORDINGS release has been remastered from the original tapes and is certain to the many who made the reissues of EGG's previous work such a success.

Felix Kubin Und Das Mineral Orchester
Music for Theatre and Radio Play
PS, GERMANY We are extremely excited to announce the 1st collaboration between the Dekorder label and our old friend, local conspirator and private hair gardener Felix Kubin. Kubin has achieved worldwide reputation by releasing post-dadaist, futuristic NDW-influenced Organ&Korg smash hits on his own Gagarin label, on A-Musik, Ski-pp, Meeuw, Diskono et al. He has collaborated with People Like Us, Coolhaven, Mark Boombastik, Asmus Tietchens, ensemble Intégrales, David Fenech, Ergo Phizmiz, Boris D. Hegenbart, Wojtek Kucharczyk and many others. His first recordings date back to his teenage years in the early 1980's, followed by his electro acoustic noise duo Klangkrieg and the pseudo-communist Liedertafel Margot Honecker. Right from the start Felix Kubin has written and recorded music for films (hence the title of his first album) by the likes of Mariola Brillowska and Anke Feuchtenberger and continues the German tradition of "Hörspiel" (radio play) with works such as "Territerrortorium", "Nachtspeicher", "Orpheus' Psykotron" and "Syndikat für Gegenlärm" (with guest appearances by Matmos, DAT Politics and Wolfgang Müller of Die Tödliche Doris). Some of Kubin's most gorgeous and adventurous works are his contributions to "The Raft" (a radio play by the mysterious Xentos Bentos of The Homosexuals, directed by Lukas Simonis of Coolhaven, Trespassers W, Dull Schicksal) and his soundtracks for theatre plays by Branko Simic ("Zufall", based on a short story by Vladimir Nabokov) and the notorious Schorsch Kamerun. The latter (known in Germany as a member of Goldene Zitronen) directed "Hollywood Elegien" based on a song cycle by Bert Brecht and Hanns Eisler. Now the best parts of these works are for the first time available on LP and CD, simply (and aptly) titled "Music for Theatre and Radio Play". While the musical spectrum on this release covers a variety of styles and moods it's still almost immediately recognizable as a typically Kubin-ist work featuring the main ingredients his records and body-and-mind-boggling live shows are famous for. Twisted rhythms & playfully clever arrangements that could have been created by a mutated reincarnation of the legendary Juan Esquivel; hauntingly ethereal tracks sounding like a narcoleptic John Carpenter playing Angelo Badalamenti arrangements; contorted Big Band music, pre-war Schlager and Vaudeville sent through a malfunctioning pre-digital time machine; Ennio Morricone cloned as a Russian male choir; instrumental workers' songs Hanns Eisler might have imagined in a feverish nightmare - it's all there, and more!

PS, SWEDEN Fireflies is Lisle Mitnik. He grew up in the tundras of New England playing classical piano and one day he moved to California to go to school and decided to start writing songs. He try to craft each song into a tiny snow-globe-sized universe you can curl up in and get lost for a little while. Harmony Rockets
Paralyzed Mind of the Archangel Void [re-issue]
PS, US Re-issue of Mercury Rev side-project's 1995 debut. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "The brain-searing Paralyzed Mind of the Archangel Void is a trip into the furthest reaches of sound, a complete immersion into space noise and melodic chaos. Comprised of a single, 42-minute live performance piece, the Harmony Rockets' guise allows Mercury Rev the opportunity to push their music to its breaking point; instead of the ear-splitting avant freak-out one might have expected, however, the disc seems to exist in slow motion, characterized by ominous waves of sound. Guitars drone, trumpets throb, and Jonathan Donahue's vocals float in and out of the mix like random messages intercepted from another galaxy; the cumulative effect is an amazing distortion of the time-space continuum, a shape-shifting aural world almost alien in its dementia."

Helio Sequence
Keep Your Eyes Ahead
PS, US After 3 albums and ten years of touring and recording, The Helio Sequence (Brandon Summers and Benjamin Weikel) have recorded their most dynamic, extraordinary work to date. Keep Your Eyes Ahead marries the Portland duo's signature layered keyboards and impossibly big guitars with crisp songwriting and a newfound appreciation for minimalism. The finger picking on "Shed Your Love" is backed by exquisite strings and ambient noise, but Brandon's serene, self-assured delivery remains front and center. While songs from the band's early releases spanned up to 7 minutes, even the longest, lushest, catchiest track on Keep Your Eyes Ahead (fiery anthem "Hallelujah") clocks in at 4 and a half minutes, evidence of just how refined their craft has become. Vocals were recorded spontaneously in bedroom closets and living rooms, which may explain the haunting urgency you hear in Brandon's voice, especially on driving tracks like "Keep Your Eyes Ahead." The band also took its time on the album. After the bulk of official recording was completed, a listen through all the demos and snippets on Brandon's hard drive convinced Benjamin there were more gems in the rough (which is how both "Hallelujah" and "Keep Your Eyes Ahead," as well as the mid-tempo "Back to This" were rediscovered and retooled). Produced by the band, Keep Your Eyes Ahead confirms in The Helio Sequence an energy and a range that continues to defy narrow categorization. Unapologetic pop and folk meld seamlessly to create songs that are bigger, more epic and polished than anything they've ever done. Keep Your Eyes Ahead is the sound of a band and a decade-old partnership that's been invigorated. And that's exactly how the songs will make you feel: invigorated.

Hitchcock, Robin
Shadow Cat
PS, UK Robyn Hitchcock has taken time out from working with The Venus 3 (which features various members of REM) and John Paul Jones (who has been busy with his former band Led Zeppelin lately...) to compile an exclusive album, Shadow Cat, for London's premier oddball label Sartorial Records. This collection of previously unreleased material from the Hitchcock vaults dates from 1993-99, providing the missing link between The Egyptians on A&M and the Warner Bros years. Shadow Cat itself features Moris Tepper, mainstay of Captain Beefheart's Magic Band, on lead acoustic guitar, and all tracks are Hitchcock originals, but for the Hendrix cover "The Wind Cries Mary" (on which Sartorial boss Terry Edwards plays Hammond organ). Aside from Edwards making a further appearance on "Never Have To See You Again", Robyn performs all instruments & vocals. From the concise opening cut, For Debbie Reynolds, to the concluding title track, the quality of the songwriting & performance shines through - "out-take" albums are all too often cobbled together from unreleased (unrealizable!) material. Not so here. These 14 tracks were whittled down from around 30 contenders, carefully edited & remastered to create a cohesive album - even to the point of sequencing the songs as two sides, despite it not being manufactured on vinyl. Essential for those who have followed Robyn from his early days in The Soft Boys (with Kimberley Rew, Morris Windsor and Andy Metcalfe) to his work with film director Jonathan Demme and beyond, this release also serves as a fine introduction to the work of one of Englands most treasured songwriters. Enjoy! Track listing SIDE 1: 1 For Debbie Reynolds, 2 Never Have To See You Again, 3 Love Affair, 4 The Wind Cries Mary, 5 High On Yourself, 6 Because You're Over, 7 The Cat Walks Her Kind Of Line. SIDE 2: 8 Statue With A Walkman, 9 The Green Boy, 10 Real Dot, 11 Nothing But Time, 12 Beautiful Shock, 13 Baby-Doll, 14 Shadow Cat.

PS, UK 28 tracks. NTSC Region 0. LTM is proud to present the very first DVD by Isabelle Antena, the acclaimed easy and electro-samba pioneer from Paris , acclaimed by everyone from Nouvelle Vague to Thievery Corporation. Transmissions gather together 16 remastered video clips for singles and key album tracks recorded between 1982 and 2000, together with 12 tracks from a live concert at the Koseinenkin Hall, Tokyo, on 26 June 1991. Stand-out clips and tracks include Seaside Weekend, Easy Street, Poisson des Mers du Sud, Laying on the Sofa, Romancia del Amor, Jouez le Cinq, and the classic 1982 clip for debut single The Boy From Ipanema by the original Antena trio. The DVD also includes some amusing 'lost in translation' style interview extracts. The 1991 live footage from Japan runs for more than an hour, and features Antena favorites such as Antena, Be-Pop and Eclat de Nuit, on which Isabelle is backed by a crack jazz band including Fritz Sundermann and Marco de Meersman, as well as guest musicians from Japan. Artist biography: chic trio Antena formed in Paris in 1981. After scoring cult hits with wry single The Boy From Ipanema and classic mini album Camino Del Sol in 1982, the band left Crepuscule for major label releases on Island and Mercury. Going solo, Isabelle Antena returned to Crepuscule in 1986, and since then has released a further twelve albums, her writing spanning jazz, funk and Latin, and achieving notable success in Japan and the Far East. The most recent Isabelle Antena album, Easy Does It, appeared in 2005. A new Antena album, Toujours du Soleil, was released in 2006.

Jennifer Gentle & Makoto Kawabata
Wrong Cage
PS, ITALY ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Besides leading his main band, Acid Mothers Temple, and plenty of other side projects, Makoto Kawabata has carried out a number of collaborations over the years; this one, taken from a live show in Italy in May 2002, finds him with the young psych act Jennifer Gentle. In many ways it's very much Jennifer Gentle's show -- of the three songs on the short release, the two that take up the most time are extended versions of tracks from their first two albums. "Bring Them," originally from I Am You Are, makes for a full-on neo-stoner masterpiece."

Jet Age, The
What Did You Do During the War, Daddy?
PS, US This the Jet Age's (ex-Hurricane Lamps) follow up to 2006's critically acclaimed Breathless. Boasting brilliant tunes, breathtaking performances, and-dare we say?-a headline-grabbing concept at its heart, WDYDDTW,D? is sure to be one of the most talked about records of this election year. MAGNET: "As consistent as the Lamps were across their five albums, the Jet Age's Breathless marks a huge step forward, from Tischler's songwriting to the musicians' performances to the production and overall ambience. Lamps devotees, don't worry; Tischler is still unleashing bright shards of his trademark riffery and serving up literate epistles in his Roger Daltrey-meets-Robert Smith voice... With this debut, his band has clearly hit an early high."

Judys, The
Moo [re-issue]
PS, US The original 'Moo' album finally re-issued on CD for the first time! CD sports seven bonus tracks, mainman David Bean's "Modomusic" EP. Released almost four years to the day after Washarama and following an eighteen month hiatus, The Judy's Moo album has a slightly more progressive sound: richer production values, fuller arrangements and thicker harmonies. As the band returned to the stage in 1985, this was the album that showed the band's maturity and development as songwriters and musicians. The twelve songs on Moo, laced with solid-state irony, well-placed cynicism and standard issue Judys' wit, show the band at the peak of their creativity and acted as a springboard for their live extravaganzas. The album was released with The Moo Tour - a month of live performances across the state which included giant cereal boxes, moving conveyer belts of milk cartons, and a dancing cow while the band donned milkman uniforms. Critically acclaimed and fan-revered, The Moo Album continues to be a milestone in Texas pop music.

Judys, The
Land Of Plenty [re-issue]
PS, US First ever official release for The Judys last album, recorded but never released! In 1990, The Judy's set out to record a new album with a new Judy's sound. Featuring the lineup that had been established over a number of years the band, including Barbara Donaho (keyboards/guitars), Lee Malone (bass), and Darwin Keys (drums), set out to explore new horizons musically and thematically. Land of Plenty injected multi-layered keyboards and guitars, stacked vocals, a gospel choir, and even a bit of banjo into the band's palatte and sought to realize Bean's vision of a new Americana musical landscape. Broad in its scope and daring in its expansion of the band's definition of itself, Land of Plenty was shelved when the group disbanded before the CD's release. While a handful of copies have been given out, this is first time this long sought-after project has been available to the general public.

Judys, The
Washarama [re-issue]
PS, US The original 'Washarama' album finally re-issued on CD for the first time! With six bonus tracks from "The Wonderful World of Applainces" EP. The Judy's first full-length and most popular recording, Washarama was a watershed event in the Texas new wave scene and solidified the band's status as the state's most original and daring musical provocateurs. The album perfectly captures the band's quirky sensibility and their signature minimalist sound. The twelve-song, 35-minute album includes some of The Judy's most popular songs including "Her Wave", "Man on a Window Ledge", and the legendary "Guyana Punch". This was the first time that the band had spent an extensive (for them) amount of time on a recording project including a total remix of the album after its initial completion. The album was officially released in 1981 at a record release party at Houston's Agora Ballroom and literally became a top seller overnight. Sales were later bolstered by Wasted Talent securing distribution from a major regional distributor. Despite it's age, Washarama still holds its own as the classic Texas new wave album.

Originally released as a 10" on Rococo Records w/a very small pressing, Dr Filth & KK Rampage asked Big Neck to re-release this record on CD w/3 added tracks. 10 tracks of blazing guitar cacophony, crunchy vocal madness, & pounding drums comparable to the Lost Sounds on speed or even sounding like something that would come from Load Records or Skingraft.

Klein, Alan
Well At Least It's British
PS, UK 60's Brit Pop with an influence on 90's Brit Pop. Includes rare Joe Meek produced tracks. All first time on CD, and first ever reissue. After writing the soundtrack to the quintessential pre- Beatles English pop movie What A Crazy World Alan Klein scored a deal with Decca to write and perform his view of English society at the time. His style of delivery was very distinctive, not unlike contemporary Anthony Newley, and writing like Lionel Bart. Alan was managed by Ken Pitt who also had another client called David Jones, soon to be David Bowie. That the early style of Bowie's delivery is also akin to Kleins must surely be more than coincidence. In the mid 90's Damon Albarn was asked about his influences and said about this LP " ...it was instrumental in me making Modern Life Is Rubbish, and changing and getting an idea of my own self.... I can't believe that David Bowie didn't know him inside out, and the same with Ray Davies. My favourite track goes ' he's a twentieth-century Englishman ' (see Blur's For Tomorrow). It's a fantastic record." Klein went on to tour the world as vocalist in the New Vaudeville Band. For bonus tracks we include the two singles he wrote and recorded in 1962, both produced by Joe Meek, and the 1965 singles including the withdrawn Age Of Corruption.

Lightspeed Champion
Falling Off The Lavender Bridge
PS, US Lightspeed Champion is the alter ego of Dev Hynes, musical polymath and former member of cult noise pop band Test Icicles. After their demise in 2006, Hynes began to focus on the more melodic fare that's closer to his heart. On this record, he worked with Mike Mogis (resident producer for Saddle Creek Records) and was backed by an informal band including multi-instrumentalists Mogis and Nate Walcott, The Faint's drummer Clark Baechle, and guest vocalist Emmy The Great, along with moonlighting members of Cursive and Tilly And The Wall. Here, Hynes reveals much about himself; the album being packed with tragic-comic autobiographical numbers.

Mangion, Suzy
The Other Side of the Mountain
PS, UK Starting from a cupboard with a piano & a drum kit in it, Durham City, England, Suzy Mangion began her public music making as one half of school boy/girl band George, in 1994. George released a number of acclaimed secret pop records on vinyl collector labels Earworm & Bad Jazz in the late 90s, and eventually released their debut album 'The Magic Lantern' on Pickled Egg Records in 2003. An EP, 'All Good Things', was released in Spain on Lejos Discos, and the 2005 George album, 'A Week of Kindness', was jointly released on both labels. Suzy also appeared on the Piano Magic album 'Writers Without Homes' (4AD) - contributing vocals on two tracks, which have been described by many as the album's highlights and has recorded two albums with Arbol, an eponymous debut (Indus Sonica), and 'Dreams Made of Paper' (Lejos Discos). Last year she made a guest appearance on the Big Eyes Family Players's album, 'Do The Musiking'. Suzy is also one half of The Winter Journey. 'The Other Side of the Mountain' is Suzy's first solo album, and was recorded between January and July 2006. Musically, it follows on very much from where George left off, hardly surprising, given that Suzy was responsible for writing and performing about 90% of their material. "Suzy Mangion's voice cuts through the muggy layer of post modernism, to deliver songs that beautifully capture a sense of perpetual loss through the passing of time itself" [The Wire] "When she's not collaborating with the likes of Arbol and Piano Magic, Suzy Mangion writes intimate torch songs with multi-instrumentalist Michael Varty. One minute she sounds like Joni Mitchell crooning over a Wurlitzer, the next she's whispering like Vincent Gallo's long lost cousin over a fragile score of guitars, chimes, strings and loops. Either way, the results are never less than mesmerizing" [Uncut] "George's adventures in bricolage proffer to the listener the saddest, prettiest songs about early surgical cinema, living in memory or a fearful search for joy, that they will hear for a long time" [Sleazenation] "George's suite of beautiful songs makes no vulgar attempt to grab your attention, and its inward_looking focus put me in mind of the woody folkisms of Vashti Bunyan, previously the last word in this kind of hushed English Fireside reverie" [The Sound Projector].

Mars Volta
Bedlam in Goliath
PS, US New album from modern prog princes! ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "On their first three proper albums, Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez played games of quiet-loud-quiet (or loud-quiet-loud), sneaking around stealthily for minutes at a time before detonating another blast of thrash-metal riffing and piercing screams. The Bedlam in Goliath is simply loud-loud-loud, virtually every song played at maximum volume and tempo. But, in fact, instead of being wearisome or exhausting, it's an oddly refreshing album. The band gets closer to their roots in thrash and funk-metal than ever before, avoids using electronics except where they can make a big impact, and finally lets semi-permanent guest John Frusciante occupy a readily discernible role."

Martial Canterel records and performs using only vintage analogue synthesizers and sequencers, producing a highly-crafted, complex, and idiosyncratic form of electronic music that is simultaneously romantically melancholic and affirmatively aggressive. Inspired both by the first wave of relatively unknown minimal electronic bands in Northern Europe and the seminal industrial noise bands such as Throbbing Gristle, SPK, and Cabaret Voltaire.

Nyro, Laura
More Than A New Discovery
PS, UK Rev-Ola proudly re-presents the album which introduced to the world the wonderful talent of Laura Nyro! More Than A New Discovery (aka The First Songs) is openly informed by the styles of Laura's youth. She had just turned 19 when she recorded the album in early 1966, and the songs retain a youthful exuberance and glisten with beautiful pop melodies and then-fashionable, sturdy 1960s New York arrangements. Laura's lyrics are already as poetically-charged and mature as at her peak, from the wise "And When I Die" to the observational approach of "Buy and Sell." Musically, the album was obviously tailored to fit the prevailing landscape of 1960s female pop singers and it often has the same soulful atmosphere of Dusty Springfield and Evie Sands or the brash, bravura pop of Barbra Streisand, who was to take "Stoney End" to the charts three years later. Although Laura's albums would become more and more influential and adventurous, this, her first outing, features the majority of her most famous and revered compositions. Due to production decisions she did mot agree with, Laura Nyro more or less disowned her debut for many years, until the music fan in her began to appreciate the set forms as one might a Motown hit of the period, no matter how overexposed and hackneyed. With new manager David Geffen, a slew of covers of her material hitting the charts, and a controversial showing at the Monterey Pop Festival, Laura Nyro signed a favourable new deal with Columbia Records, making some of the most essential albums of the late 1960s and 1970s...but that is another, quite wonderful story. Listen now to where it all began. Fantastic album by one of our very favourite artists! Beautifully re-mastered in true RevOla style with lovely packaging as usual... A must for all fans of Laura Nyro, and of classic New York girlpop... the set form she made into so much more!

Peculiar, Vinny
Goodbye My Angry Friend
PS, UK There are times you can hear Nick Cave and Johnny Cash in these power pop meets kitchen sink drama songs but a better comparison might be Stephen Duffy for the romance-against-the-odds, me-against-the-world, railing-against-the-dying-of-the-light feeling of this record." Manchester song-writing maverick, performance poet and Smiths associate Vinny Peculiar has cultivated an alternative music career spanning the past 10 years collaborating with a diverse range of artists from Bill Drummond to Bonehead. 'Goodbye My Angry Friend', his 7th studio album, is an ambitious, vengeful, tuneful and intriguing collection of songs. Produced by sonic magpie Tim Browne it fuses influences that are, to many a pop music connoisseur, poles apart...from Nick Cave to The Darkness...from Johnny Cash to Queen. Here is a record that, for better or worse, plays by its own rules. The opening salvo reflects upon the death of the Vinny Peculiar alter ego whilst 'Kiss Me [I'm a Social Worker]' reeks of abuse and mistrust. 'Seasonal Affective Disorder' is a tenderly affecting paean of mood disorder and melody. 'Lazy Bohemians' portrays and gently dismembers a world of would be revolutionary misfits...a world in which Vinny stars as idler in chief. From garage band symphonies to rock and roll nursery rhymes here is a record of audacious musicality from an artist not simply content to sit on the edge. Vinny Peculiar is prepared to jump.

In fact, that's the phrase - albeit in French - that one photographer used when shooting ROBOTS IN DISGUISE aka DEE PLUME (guitar and vocals) and SUE DENIM (bass and vocals) for a French glossy, which probably prefers to remain nameless. But while many would rant, huff & puff or simply cave in, ROBOTS IN DISGUISE decided to celebrate the launch of their 3rd album, WE'RE IN THE MUSIC BIZ, by beating the boys at their own game. The maverick electro-pop duo with a reputation for their fashion-forward style appears on the cover with immaculate hair and make-up wearing skinny-minny shirts and ties. But what's this? Those girls are naked but for layer of skillfully applied body paint! 'We like to subvert people's expectations of us as a band and have a bit of fun with it,' says agent provocateuse, Dee. 'People have seen those pictures and it's so unexpected that they've not even clocked it,' says Sue. Part riot grrl princesses, part monsters of DIY musical mayhem, ROBOTS IN DISGUISE have enjoyed cult success in France and Germany where they've toured extensively around their first two albums, but now they're setting their sights closer to home, supporting The Gossip on tour this summer and picking up fans from the likes of CSS, The Klaxons, Princess Superstar and Chicks on Speed. WE'RE IN THE MUSIC BIZ sees the Robots developing their signature sound and tell-it-like-it-is lyrics, with a sharper, boppier and frequently impossibly catchy feel. Produced by Chris Corner (Sneaker Pimps/ I Am X) in Berlin, WE'RE IN THE MUSIC BIZ includes the hit single, THE SEX HAS MADE ME STUPID, a hedonistic, future indie-dance classic of what happens when you get off with someone you like. The sex, the drink, the illegal substances - the sheer addictive mess and mayhem that inevitably ensue from acting on attraction. Get it out for the girls... Confirmed Press includes The London Paper, The Fly, Record Collector, Stool pigeon, Mojo, AXM, SubVert Magazine, Loaded, Mixmag, NME, Artrocker, DJ Magazine, Maxim. Loads more expected but too early to confirm as yet. Track listing 1 We're in the music biz, 2 Cant stop getting wasted, 3 The sex has made me stupid, 4 Animals, 5 The tears, 6 I don't have a god, 7 I live in Berlin, 8 I'm hit, 9 Everybody's going crazy, 10. Dont copy me.

Saville, Robin/Doll Boy
Player Piano/ Prelude No.1
PS, UK Like Burton and Taylor, some artists and labels are always linked. Isan/ Robin Saville go way back with the Static Brothers and we are chuffed as can be to release Robin's first solo single, a precursor for his debut album. Dollboy have also stepped inside the Caravan before, donning mittens and knocking back a Cab Sav while holing up with the extended family, otherwise known as those dudes from Tunng. Try finding that release nowadays. MC Doll (homeless Oliver Cherer) Boy and his producer (social worker Robin Saville) strode into the van with the idea of a split single, and who are we to turn our backs on such street savvy? It's best to say that this hummus and sesame seed breadstick is a mighty fine appetizer for Robin's debut solo album. Planned for a release with Static Caravan, it's due to see the light of day in 2008. For the past ten years, Robin Saville has been precisely fifty percent of isan, a frankly seminal electronica outfit whose influence has been acknowledged around the world. This is his first solo release, a bouncy, weaving, piano-led lurcher which harks back to the duo's earlier, more carefree roots. He also likes to grow vegetables and make jam. Sublime electronica AND advice about vegetable seeds for your garden? Now that's what we call good value. Following a long list of highly regarded releases since 2004, Dollboy returns with a re-voicing of JS Bach's Prelude No 1 in C Major (from The Well Tempered Clavier), a characteristically swoonsome piece of organic-electronic jingle-jangle majesty, featuring the sound of water-filled bowls and a 1942 glass glockenspiel. What ensues is two minutes of clicks, whirrs and beautiful sounds, bringing Bach into the binary age - kick back, grab a glass of red wine and admire the warm glow. 250 only seveninch vinyl in a hand-painted sleeve.

Scary Mansion
Every Joke Is Half the Truth
PS, US Massachusetts-bred Leah Hayes attended art school in New York before moving to France where she played In a band called Satan's Fingers, collaborating with David Ivar from underground pop legends Herman Dune. Growing up playing piano and guitar, Hayes also took up the thunderstick, an Appalachian instrument similar in Tone to the banjo. Her collection of ballpoint pen notebook illustrations "Holy Molly" was published by pantographic in 2004 and her freelance illustration work has appeared in the New York Times, Punk Planet, and Mcsweeney's. Shortly after starting the band Scary Mansion with Ben Shapiro (the Fugue) on drums and Bradley Banks on Bass, Hayes set about recording the tracks that make up "Every Joke Is Half The Truth". Hayes worked with producer Kyle Fischer (Rainer Maria) over an extended six-month period. With the sound of the thunderstick, the resulting tracks alternate between sparse intimate tones and near claustrophobic layers of feedback, all with an attention to the needs of the songs. Hayes' lyrical approach mines themes of alienation and romantic snafus, embodied in characters litigious, predatory, and straw-filled. "Every Joke Is Half The Truth" is Scary Mansion's debut album. Hayes has a Graphic novel due out on fantagraphics February 2008 called "Funeral of the Heart".

Sequins, The
The Death of Style
PS, UK Long awaited 12 track debut album from the best Best Midlands indie pop band. Formed around the nucleus of Warwick University, the five-piece deliver an album that builds upon the potential shown in their two singles and transgresses that already high watermark. Sharing a firm lineage with the Postcard and Sarah Records aesthetics, The Sequins draw upon the best jangly guitar pop and artrock to create a signature sound that puts them out of step with the current zeitgeist. Eschewing the contemporary fashion with cold-hearted irony, The Sequins aren't afraid to indulge their playful side or embrace the unfashionable. This is music free of guilty pleasures and full of unabashed joy. Although employing spider-like guitars and dizzying time signatures in equal measure, they never once forget the importance of melody or a good chorus. Recorded in South London in two short sessions, The Death of Style is endearingly lo-fi but sparkles in all the right places, providing a perfect snapshot of the live sound that has brought The Sequins many devoted fans in the past year. Limited to 1000 specially designed album sleeves, each release comes replete with it's own sequins and a front cover which encourages fans to create their own unique designs. Press: "this is immutable yet frail pop that makes my heart beat faster and faster. 9/10" Drowned In Sound. "An absolute must for indiepopsters everywhere" -The Fly. "Blissfully-tuneful indie-pop contenders" - NME. "Wide eyed melodies and breakneck energy" - Rough Trade. "Sharp jangling rhythms that swoop and soar" - SoundsXP. "I'm too lost in the world of Sequins and can't work out what I was going to do..." - John Kennedy, XFM.

Serpentina
Planeando En Tu Azotea
PS, SPAIN The new album of the Valencian group, SERPENTINA, is made up of two siblings, Paco and María Tamarit, with the title "Planeando en tu Azotea" Both of them are members of the conservatory and Paco, who is in charge of composing and creating the beautiful arrangements of the songs, has collaborated in the past few years with numerous bands from this region and he also produced the debut album of CORAZÓN. In this album, we find 12 new hits of luminous and charming pop, with the advance of the video of "Querido Miedo", which is notably the return of the band after a magnificent debut album "Blancamañana" (2004) released on the small independent label from Barcelona, Annika Records In brief, "Planeando en tu Azotea" is a summer breeze of pop songs for short and elegant, while distinguished, melody lovers, packed with dreamy voices and crystal clear instrumentation. A few drops of bitter liquor which help to mitigate the placid sweetness are suggested while listening to this gem.

Somatic Responses
Digital Darkness
PS, GERMANY A new sign of life from Wales - John and Paul Healy, well-known as somatic responses produced a new fulltime masterpiece of electronic sound wizardry. Almost two years have passed since Giauzar and it seems the brothers used their time not only for the explorations of new tonal and atonal scapes, they also went for a re-analysis of their roots. The digital darkness described here is a dry, drawn out universe of distorted chromatic basses, straightened heavy beats and swirling filter pulses, establishing ties from the times when the tb-303 took over technoid music up to the nineties where speed increased and rhythms became dodgier. Stylistic classifications were never somatic responses' aim, nevertheless, digital darkness might be rated as one of their most straight-lined works since years - f.e. you never heard S.R. as speedy as they are on the title track or 'reset the world'. Their typical ingredients like unique strings usage are still present ('stranded'), the enrichment with some blasts from the past makes digital darkness a mixture that will kick your eardrums in.

Sparrow, The
The Complete CBS Recordings 1966-67
PS, UK After our amazing release by the legendary Mars Bonfire, here is a follow-up of sorts....now listen carefully....Dennis Edmonton, drummer Jerry Edmonton and bass player Nick St Nicholas had all played together in Toronto 'British Invasion' band, Jack London & The Sparrows in 1965. When the group split from singer Jack London, they added new members, going through a succession of future Canadian music stars, even swapping members back and forth with the legendary Mynah Birds, before settling on permanent members John Kay and Goldy McJohn. Soon, their new, high energy blues-rock style got them the attention of the Rolling Stones agent Jerry Brandt, who got them a prestige gig at Sybil Burton's hot nightclub Arthur in the summer of 1966. A deal with Columbia Records followed, with a single "Tomorrow's Ship" being the result. It failed to chart, as did the followup "Green Bottle Lover", and The Sparrow decamped for California, playing at every legendary venue with everyone you care to mention, to a fair amount of acclaim. In June 1967, however, Dennis Edmonton announced his decision to go solo, changing his name to Mars Bonfire. This effectively fragmented the group, with St. Nicholas and new guitarist Michael Monarch joining members of the Hard Times as T.I.M.E...though Monarch soon left to join the ther Sparrows in their new project STEPPENWOLF...who broke through with songs written by Mars Bonfire like "Born To Be Wild"....and were soon rejoined by St. Nicholas... and so it was that all the members of THE SPARROW were involved in the phenomenal success of STEPPENWOLF! A twisty turny story, but, oh my, is the music worth it! The full Columbia recordings of THE SPARROW including the lost audition tapes! Includes the first full-on rock recording of "The Pusher" later made famous by Steppenwolf...Beautifully remastered in true Rev-Ola style, with lovely packaging as usual! Circular Sounds
PS, US The fourth LP from San Francisco's Stoltz. Its fourteen songs are a stereophonic advance on the lo-fi psych-fuzz of 2004's "Antique Glow" (Beautiful Happiness) and the mid-fi of the piano-rock of 2006's "Below The Branches" (Sub Pop). Both made #24 in MOJO magazine's "Best Albums" list for their respective years. "Circular Sounds" is very much a pop record in the classic 60s mold. Strawberry Whiplash
Who's In Your Dreams
PS, US Astonishing debut from a promising new band from Glasgow, Scotland where everyone is in a pop bandit's in the blood, it's in the water and it's in the contract. Sandra and Laz have built a feedback wall of sunshine sound out of old fuzz boxes and reverbed drums that recalls some of the best C-86 pop from The Shop Assistants, Talulah Gosh, The Primitives, or The Revolving Paint Dream. The debut single includes the infectious lead track 'Who's In Your Dreams?' which is creating quite the buzz on international indie blogs already. It's a hip shaking pop gem with tambourines, splendid melodies, loads of reverb and just the recommended dosage of ba-da-ba's. 'It Rains On Other Planets' is a shimmering wall of sound with noisy guitars, steady drumming, piercing organ and handclaps, while 'My Day Today' is an immediate 150 bpm pop hit with jangling guitars and keyboards that in a parallel universe would fill dance floors to capacity. Final track 'Factory Girl' is a harmonic wall of pop based around the Warhol Superstar phenomenon think Mary Chain meets The Primitives and you're nearly there. An especially invigorating addition to the Matinée catalog, Strawberry Whiplash are early contenders for favorite new band of 2008! Limited to 1000 copies in custom mini jacket sleeve.

Soiree Du Coeur A Barbe: Festival Paris Dada
PS, UK A groundbreaking anthology of piano music directly linked to the Dada avant-garde art movement in Paris between 1920 and 1923. Soirée du Coeur à Barbe: Festival Dada Paris is based on the piano repertoire performed at two landmark Dada events in Paris, namely the Festival Dada on 26 May 1920, and the infamous Soirée du Coeur à Barbe on 6 July 1923, an event disrupted by violent confrontation between Tristan Tzara's Dada faction and Surrealists lead by Andre Breton. Music from the 1920 event includes two pieces by Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes as well as The American Nurse by Francis Picabia, the latter described as 'three notes repeated to infinity'. Pieces performed at the riotous 1923 soirée include two fox-trots by Georges Auric and Darius Milhaud (both members of the celebrated group Les Six), the four-hand Trois Morceaux en forme de poire by Erik Satie (performed in person by the composer on the night), and Three Easy Pieces by Igor Stravinsky. The CD also includes other pieces such as Satie's bizarre playlet Le Piège de Méduse (premiered in Paris in May 1921), Drie composities voor Klavier by the Belgian-born Dada/Surrealist E.L.T. Mesens, and a piano rendering of Marcel Duchamp's short vocal Musical Erratum of 1913. The CD closes with an historic archive Stravinsky recording from 1925 by Marcelle Meyer, the pianist who performed at both Dada events in 1920 and 1923. Always described in detail in texts on the history of Dada and Surrealism, the music performed at these events is rarely heard, and remarkably this CD marks the first ever recordings of these compositions by Ribemont-Dessaignes, Picabia and Mesens. All were researched and performed for the project by virtuoso Dutch pianist Peter Beijersbergen van Henegouwen. The booklet includes detailed liner notes by James Hayward, as well as archive images.

Realistic Patterns: Orchestrated Psychedelia from the USA
PS, UK This compilation rounds up 20 (previously uncomped on CD) tracks, all of which have been enriched, rather than diluted, by orchestration. There has long been a prevailing school of thought that psychedelic bands and orchestras do not mix. Even the compiler, Nick Saloman (The Bevis Frond), admits he has been guilty in the past of dismissing many a fine track because of the unwelcome intrusion of brass and strings. It was down to bands like The Left Banke, with their innovative use of baroque instrumentation and chord structure, to show that psychedelia could be orchestrated and still sound superb. You'll hear fuzz guitars, flutes, organs, sitars, horns, strings and some strange, strange lyrics. Okay, we concede that the mental image of a mob of penguin-suited, straight-laced classical musicians sawing away over a tripped-out psych backbeat may not appear particularly "rock & roll" (well actually, maybe it does!), but open your ears and your mind, and you cannot fail to be seduced... Artists include: Burned, The Subterranean Monastery, The Moon, Bubble, Compass, Tim Wilde, The Sound Solution, The Mystic Astrologic Crystal Band, The Byzantine Empire, A Handful, Douglas Fir, Gregg Shively, Nobody's Children, The Balloon Farm, Dunn & McCashen, The Visions, Drake, The 31st Of February, Natty Bumpo and The Little Boy Blues.

I Spider
PS, UK CLASSIC PROGRESSIVE ROCK ALBUM - NOW 24-BIT REMASTERED FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES. NEW ESSAY & INTERVIEW WITH DAVE LAWSON. "I Spider" is truly a lost classic of the Progressive era. Originally released by Polydor Records in 1970, the album was influenced by the experiments of groups such as KING CRIMSON, GENTLE GIANT et al, but was more than a mere clone of these bands. The group evolved from an excellent blues influenced band who released three albums for Deram, who then recruited Keyboard player and writer DAVE LAWSON and recorded their final album. The musicianship on the album was excellent and Keyboard player DAVE LAWSON's compositions were groundbreaking and memorable. The group soon evolved into SAMURAI (whose eponymous album is also released by ESOTERIC this month). This Esoteric reissue is remastered from the original master tapes and features two bonus tracks recorded live in Sweden in 1971, a booklet with previously unseen photographs and an interview with DAVE LAWSON.

Led by a renewed creative spark & expanded influences including Nick Drake, Traffic & Crosby, Stills & Nash, he produced, according to Q Magazine, a "pastoral coming of age masterpiece." This 43-track deluxe edition reissue includes an expanse of bonus material including b sides, demos, BBC session versions & unreleased tracks.

Whitsundays
S-T
PS, US This Edmonton, Alberta band certainly has a knack for writing yellowed, reverb-wrapped pop music, borrowing from the grand tradition of English psychedelia, garage & vintage organ rock. With reverent nods to the whimsy of the Zombies, the bluster of the Animals & the inanity of Syd Barrett, their debut is a vintage gem & a charming hodgepodge of '60s musical ephemera.

Wild Swans
Bringing Home the Ashes [re-issue]
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Songs about war and religious faith were not exclusive to U2 in the '80s. Liverpool, England's the Wild Swans ventured into U2 territory on their 1988 debut album, Bringing Home the Ashes, while sustaining their distinctive sound. The haunting voice of Paul Simpson injects every track with emotional weight; whether he is trying to convey joy or sorrow, his icy baritone chills to the bone. His vocals combine Scott Walker's lonely croon with the brooding angst of Ian McNabb from fellow Liverpudlians the Icicle Works... As enthralling as U2 were in the '80s, they never sounded as gorgeous as the Wild Swans do on Bringing Home the Ashes... Simpson's sparkling voice and Kelly's ethereal guitars provide the album with an undeniably romantic feel. Every track is suffused with radiant pop hooks."

5ive
Hesperus (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 19TH)
PS, US Boston's 5ive were a two-piece with no vocalist or bass player long before being instrumental and having an unorthodox band assemblage became "cool". They have a Kyuss style guitar tone without the bad vocals. Their debut full-length was one of Terrorizer magazine's top twenty of 2001. "Ben Carr's guitars are thickly layered without the sound becoming mushy. The distortion he gets out of his amp makes his riffing sound like balls of flame. Charlie Harrold's drumming complements the guitar playing exceptionally; these are two musicians that are well in tune with each other" - Brainwashed.com.

Apes, The
Ghost Games (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 19TH)
PS, US POPMATTERS: "Forgoing lead guitar for shambling, sinister organ licks, DC post-punk outfit the Apes strike a strange middle-ground between minimalism and maximalism. Lacking guitar accompaniment, Jeff Schmid's drums and and Erick Jackson's bass tend operate in spare cages of plunging rhythms and blurting stabs, and when the keys afford them some space, the whole feels crisply open. However, just as often as organist Amanda Bynes allows herself to be constrained by the others' rhythms, she surges past and breaks free, letting her organ swell to fill every gap with psychedelic squeal."

Belong
Colorloss Record (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 19TH)
PS, US While BELONG still considers these cover songs, what we are presented with are shells, the ghosts of what we think we know about such a fleeting medium as music in the first place. And like the title implies, the music sounds weathered, a faded version of some original we might only imagine. As a record of covers, it sounds like the sonic palimpsest that it is exactly. On "Colorloss", one finds a humble treatment of the hierarchy of sounds. It is the equal attention given to each sound and its place in the mix that makes this a true musical democracy where each element shines in its own way, while propping up the others in a puzzle that would charm Archimedes. A wash of fuzz finds itself meandering thru a track holding hands with the vocals, the space between a breathe before the next submergence. What we have as a result is work of such staggering beauty and melodic thoughtfulness to stop KEVIN SHIELDS in his tracks at the wonder of it. And while the instrumentation and means might be different, this is a music that has as much in common with late 20th-century composition in the vein of JOHN CALE or TONY CONRAD as it does with the soundscapes of WILLIAM BASINSKI or MY BLOODY VALENTINE.

Bitcrush
Epilogue in Waves (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 26TH)
PS, US '"Epilogue in Waves" is the third album from n5MD main-man Mike Cadoo's ever evolving Bitcrush moniker. The album is the soundtrack to a story which begins with a sense of hope, but whose undercurrents pull you to the end you feared. Epilogue in Waves marks the end of Cadoo's "wading in the ocean" thematic metaphor for lost time that constituted the backbone of his previous album, "In Distance." As his self-described "rock record," the album eschews some of Cadoo's previous electronic methodologies for a more stripped-down songwriting style which utilizes only guitars, basses and drums. This experiment in the basics has led to a sonically rich release that still contains those warm musical crevices to find solace in. Epilogue in Waves will please fans of previous works by Bitcrush as well as neophytes to Cadoo's brand of emotional and sometimes epic songwriting.

Black Fortress of Opium
S-T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MARCH 25TH)
PS, US Inspired by the lore surrounding a little town in Turkey , Afyonkarahisar, which translates into "Black Fortress of Opium." Their self-titled debut album was recorded in Brooklyn, NY by Martin Bisi (IGGY POP, SONIC YOUTH, DRESDEN DOLLS) over the course of seven months in 2007. The 10 original tracks are often reminiscent of Middle or Near Eastern sounds channeled through American folk instrumentation (mandolin, banjo) as well as e-bowed electric guitars, with female vocals that alternate between powerful and soulful to soft and mournful.

For Emma, Forever Ago (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 19TH)
PS, US This debut is centered around a particular aesthetic; Justin Vernon, the primary force behind Bon Iver, moved to a remote cabin in the woods of Northwestern Wisconsin at the onset of winter, alone for three months. This solitary time fed a bold, uninhibited new musical focus. All his personal trouble, lack of perspective, heartache, longing, love, loss, and guilt that had been stockpiled over the past six years was suddenly purged into song. The NY Times called this record "irresistible", and it was given a "Recommeded" rating by Pitchfork. RIYL: Iron & Wine, M. Ward, and Elliott Smith.

Boy Omega
Hope On The Horizon (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 26TH)
PS, SPAIN On "Hope on the Horizon", Boy Omega (Swedish genius Martin Henrik Gustafsson) follows up his critically acclaimed 2006-albums "The Black Tango" and "The Grey Rainbow", with yet another impressive collection of songs that showcase the growth of his songwriting. As always when you hear a new Boy Omega-record, there's something new going on. This time it's a lot less electronic than before. This is something warm and analog, featuring big walls of strings, horns, acoustic pianos etc. It sounds melancholic and drenched with the bitter beauty of life. Besides from recording "Hope...", releasing two albums, a tour-cd (feat. 15 rare tracks and covers), two singles, the split CD "If we were oceans" and appearing on the Magnetic Fields tribute CD "Our love is meaningless", Boy Omega also managed to play more than 60 shows in 2006. Germany, Austria, The Netherlands and the UK were frequently visited. In the summer they played the Reeperbahn Festival in Hamburg, The End of the road festival in the UK along with artists such as Ryan Adams, Ed Harcourt and Badly Drawn Boy. They also did shows together with Isobel Campbell, Akron/Family, The Hidden Cameras and Jason Collett. "Fans of Sufjan Stevens and Elliott Smith will feel a kinship to these allusive tunes ... A fascinating series of snapshots, both disarming and engaging ... something incredibly fragile and perfectly crafted." - UNCUT "Sad songs and little-boy-lost vocals recall Bright Eyes, but his settings are all his own, mixing lo-fi sensibilities with gnarly electronics, warm cellos, lustrous violins, banjo and sax to lush effect ... One to watch." - THE INDEPENDENT "Naked and bare but still powerful, and not self-pitiful as so many others in the same genre." - GROOVE

Cash, Brent
How Will I Know If I'm Awake (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MARCH 4TH)
PS, GERMANY The Marina label presents the debut release from Athens, GA-based Brent Cash. Sounding like a lost sunshine pop classic from the '60s, How Will I Know If I'm Awake is overflowing with hook-laden choruses, multi-layered vocal harmonies and lush, sophisticated arrangements. It's the sound of endless summers and good vibrations. From the start, multi-instrumentalist Cash decided to record his songs like "they did it back then," hiring the best musicians in town and assembling a mini-orchestra featuring strings, brass and even a harp. The results are simply stunning. From the opening chords of "Everything That's Grey," we enter melody wonderland, a place where major 7 chords rule and beautiful vocal harmonies dazzle your mind. "Digging The Fault Line" is full of Byrds guitar jangle, sounding like the perfect soundtrack to cruise into golden California sunsets (with a great Wes Montgomery-like guitar solo along the way). "Only Time" explodes with 100 % fat-free youthful euphoria -- Roger Nichols meets The 5th Dimension. While deeply rooted in '60s songwriting -- influenced by Bacharach, Wilson, McCartney, and yes, The Monkees -- Cash certainly has his own unique signature style. Just listen to "And Had We Ever?" and "I Think I'm Falling In Love" -- with its complex, enchanting textures, ignoring conventional song structures. "Love Is Burning Down Tonight" -- a striking duet between Brent and Amanda Kapousouz -- is a special highlight of the album, while "Good Morning Sunshine" could be the theme song to the best TV series in the world -- the harpsichord-driven piece is chock-full of amazing twists and turns of melodic beauty. "This Sea, These Waves" moves us into bossa nova territory -- starting off in a classic Getz/Gilberto mould, the song soon morphs into heavenly orchestrated Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 elegance. "More Than Everything," clocking in at over six minutes, ends this beautiful song circle with a great final statement about overcoming heartbreak, delivered with the sincerity of a Carpenters record. Music made the way it was meant to be heard.

A delicate and minimal contemporary Ambient work partly based on the piano preludes of Claude Debussy. Country Funk
S-T [re-issue] (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MARCH 4TH)
PS, UK Few artist names or album titles have ever been so misleading as this band's. Though there are certainly elements of funk and country in the mix, their beautifully crafted songs and harmonies (to say nothing of some biting electric guitar) are far closer in feel to the West Coast psychedelia of Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills & Nash. Originally released in 1970 on Polydor, the album is a long-lost gem that is sure to please fans of U.S. West Coast rock -- it certainly appealed to Beck, who sampled one of its tracks on his Odelay album.

Crow Tongue
Ghost Eye Seeker (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MARCH 25TH)
PS, US Crow Tongue's first full length finds them summoning distant howls from the fog of night. Fingerpicked strings & Eastern instruments recall CT's musical heritage (the acid-folk of Stone Breath), but here they are layered with primitive homemade instruments, circuit-bent electronics & mantric drones. "Ghost Eye Gaze" opens the album with a 5-part drone-raga, improvised to back a shamanic chant, pushing from free-folk to free-noise & back again. "Seeker" follows in 2 parts with bass dulcimer & tablas leading into an electric swarmandal excursion. The album closes with "Candle, Corpse, and Bell" where Crow Tongue shows their dub influence with guimbri & tabla-machine slowly spinning through the echochamber.

Dead Science
Tomlab Alphabet Series - V - (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 19TH)
PS, US The "V" single, and the two songs contained therein, will be a sort of satellite of THE DEAD SCIENCE'S next album, "Villainaire", a record dealing with a very specific period of time in singer Sam Mickens' life and, more generally, in the embrace of personal nihilism and the potential psychic luxury of amorality. The A-Side, "Make Mine Marvel (Remix)" will be, in the style of R. Kelly's remix work, a completely new song, with completely new melodic and lyrical content, built on components of the original "make Mine Marvel" which will appear on "Villainaire". The B-Side, "White Mane," was a song initially intended and recorded for the album, but which will be exclusively here instead. "White Mane" is, in fragmentary and impressionistic fashion, about the American film actor Robert Blake, both in his own recent life and in terms of his relationship to certain past roles.

DeVotchKa
Mad and Faithful Telling (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MARCH 18TH)
PS, US The times have finally caught up with acclaimed Denver quartet DeVotchKa. Not long ago when the band unloaded their instruments - a violin, a tuba and an accordion, among others - into a rock club, they were told they must be in the wrong place. They created music that was Grammy nominated (DeVotchKa created the soundtrack for the indie smash Oscar winning film Little Miss Sunshine) without the benefit of a huge promotion team or runaway budget, instead relying only on their own efforts by self-releasing their records. And they crafted gems of songs by mixing a beautiful blend of Eastern European bohemia, American prairie rock and distinctive indie and called it pop, rather than world, music. Now, the band is au courant, poised to shine on with their Anti- Records debut A Mad and Faithful Telling. From the cinematic richness of "Transliterator" to the modern pop experiment of "The Clockwise Witness," to the soaring and wrenching "Undone," DeVotchKa have produced a career-defining record and the world is listening. THE ONION: "DeVotchkA gets pegged with all kinds of farfetched descriptions - but despite all their trappings, which include admittedly exotic elements, Nick Urata and company concoct impeccable pop songs, the kind that fuse memory and memorability with swaying darkness and glittering soul."

Tomavistas: (Selected Rarities 2002-2007) (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 26TH)
PS, US Daniel Romero is a multi-faceted musician based in Asturias, north of Spain. In a very short time he has molded a very personal discourse based on constructing low-budget electronic pop with lo-fi, toy instruments, combined with stunning homemade visuals. "Tomavistas" is something like an old video camera - literally taking in and recording the landscapes of contemplative, visual sound. It is a collection of Daniel Romero's rarities and personal favorites recorded as dot tape dot, spanning the years 2002 - 2007. "Tomavistas" is born of love of the domestic flavor of the "underground" and the pleasure derived spending time making music for this scene. Considering the difficulty for listeners to find these tracks, it became time to compile them along with other, little known pieces and clears out space for a new personal stockpile to be built. These 12 tracks are taken from limited edition compilations, vinyl only releases and "unofficial" albums, from labels in France, Germany, Spain, Japan, Mexico, UK and Canada. This collection is intended to serve as a retrospective for fans, highlighting different musical stages, or a perfect introduction for new listeners, revealing a background upon which to consider future output. 1. Day For Night (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 26TH)
PS, SWEDEN The Dreamers are an Anglo/Swedish duo featuring Sarah Nyberg Pergament (Action Biker) and Kevin Wright (Always and Mr. Wright, on él, Le Grand Magistery and Siesta). After meeting at a Swedish music festival in 2004, the pair began making music together via London, Stockholm and Helsinki, and fusing jazz pop, bossanova, and soundtrack music. With "Day for Night" the Dreamers have made--to paraphrase Michel Legrand on Tom Jobim- the sad music that makes the world a better place. Influences: Stan Tracey, Caetano Veloso, Colleen, Francoise Hardy, Kryzystof Komeda, Matching Mole, Anna Karina, Bill Evans, Monica Zetterlund, Nara Leao, Bernard Herrmann, Nico... "[A] male/female duo with the vocal texture and cadence of Broadcast's Trish Keenan, but with its own musicality, personality and atmosphere set in a breeze-blown, sun-drenched pasture, the record is really charming and full of self-assured confidence - light on its feet in that Brazilian way and positive in that modern indie way, but solid and thoughtfully written. The Dreamers are very easy to like but definitely not just another guilty pleasure." - Other Music, NYC

PS, US Essential limited edition 180-gram vinyl release pressed in an edition of 500 copies. Eleh's pure analog drones are a perfect complement to Sun Circle's ecstatic high-volume compositions. Sun Circle's Important debut is psychoacoustic minimalism meets psychedelic maximalism: ecstatic high-volume drones, long-form trance musics & peace noise performed with bowed strings, voices, organs, percussion & world instruments.

Enduser
Left (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 26TH)
PS, US END.USER is one of the cornerstones of the modern eclectic electronic music. Support from BBC Radio's Mary Anne Hobbs and a list of DJs too long to fit on a one sheet, from many different genres, and releases across many platforms have built him into a juggernaut. A usually prolific artist, having recorded for Hymen, Ad Noiseam, Sublight, Cargo, and many others, he took 2007 off, working on something very special - his debut album on Ohm Resistance. Having relocated to San Francisco, a new lease on his creative power is demonstrated adroitly over the entire album. Album: left shows the most range of END.USER's album making career. Intensely personal, intensely musical, and just plain INTENSE at points, the album showcases a spectacular array of skills across the board. From radio play material ("black light") with Aussie vocalist Sol Thomas, to collaborations with and remixes by influential electronic acts SCORN and COUNTERSTRIKE, to absolutely stunning, no boundaries drum n bass, the album is diverse and full of powerful compositions. Compelling from start to finish, left is the culmination of more than a year's work. Label: Ohm Resistance is Brooklyn's premier experimental electronic label. Loaded with power, from Scorn, to Bill Laswell's Method of Defiance, to Enduser and Submerged, the label has transformed from drum n bass 12" powerhouse to cutting edge electronic project pioneer.

English, Lawrence/Ai Yamamoto
Plateau (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 26TH)
PS, US Over the past three years Ai Yamamoto and Lawrence English have been exploring the ideas and linkages between field recordings, texture and minimal electronics. Occasionally crossing paths around Australia and sharing the odd live performance together, the duo realized they shared a strong interest in the character of sound and the creation of sonic works that carry a strong sense of suggested narrative and memory (both invented and real). On Plateau, they create evocative and generously textured passages of sound that mask gentle field recordings collected across the globe including Yamamoto's home prefecture of Nara, Japan where English also spent time. Considered In worldwide as the "Bible" of modern, cutting edge and new music and in publication now for over 20 years is the U.K. monthly magazine, The Wire, here is what they had to say upon review of "Plateau" in the February 2006 edition: A man of many collaborations, Lawrence English joins fellow Australian sound artist Ai Yamamoto for Plateau, a somber album of impressionist fragments connected more by mood and ambience than by movement and composition. As in his previous work with Tujiko Noriko DJ Olive and Philip Samartzis, English applies a considerable amount of DSP-distilled polish to the ensuing sounds, whether they are textured field recordings, rasping tam-tams or post-Eno dronescapes. Considering that Plateau jumps from tonefloat shimmer to wintry Durutti Column guitar flourishes to a music box palindrome and back to a bout of ominous minimalism, English's production serves to encase the entire album with a consistent aura. Plateau's numerous stylistic transitions and melodic interludes never veer far from a compelling if fragile melancholy.

PS, US While Seattle is famous for many things, sunlight isn't one of them. Yet illumination and warmth suffuse the self-titled debut from this Emerald City quintet. Dark times do not necessarily call for dark music. While singer/ guitarist Mat Brooke's previous ensembles (Band Of Horses, Carissa's Wierd) often shied away from light, he's changed direction with this band. Like the timeless classics of The Mamas & The Papas or The Turtles, it responds to the turbulent times of its genesis with hope, high spirits, and a sense of camaraderie.

Malkmus, Stephen & The Jicks
Real Emotional Trash (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MARCH 4TH)
PS, US His first record in three years. Malkmus' genius is that he knows exactly when to fetter. These songs may sprawl like the Central Valley (told you), they may spread out like a jet's flame, but when they reach that last tract house they gracefully spread their wings and head for the unclaimed land beyond. Indeed, although Malkmus makes the Pacific Northwest his home, this feels like a "California" album. Check out how "Real Emotional Trash" begins as a modern-day "Tonight's the Night," before evolving into a road trip from the Mexican border to Marin, in the tradition of Pavement's "Unfair." And dig those Allman Bros. leads (really!).

Megafaun
Bury the Square (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 19TH)
PS, US From the vibrant Southern quasi-capital of Durham emerge MEGAFAUN, wearing earnestness across the chest and abstraction along the sleeves. They pour forth dulcet harmonies, as seeking vocals tug banjo lines up the Appalachian mountains; redemptive noise soaks everything, like thick air wafting from the Atlantic. Clawhammer banjo and strummed acoustics lock and roll with electric guitars and electronic textures. They realize that folk implies deep, personal, intense expression, whether the instrument is a parlor piano with the lid thrown back or a distortion pedal with the case cracked loose. In this band, orthodoxy and unorthodoxy flow together as one.

Here, Darnielle has also come up with some of the most anthemic, impassioned, and downright catchy songs of his career. "It's rare to come across such specific and purposeful prose in modern pop. Neptune
Gong Lake (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 19TH)
PS, US Behold: NEPTUNE, the most harrowingly original band on this planet - or the next. Its three members are, in turn, musicians, sculptors, scientists, blacksmiths, electricians, and industrial machinists; relentlessly inventive, possibly sane. Together, they construct all of their instruments, forging guitars and drums out of circular saw blades, gas tanks, oil drums, bike parts, VCR casings, and miscellany from the trash. Electronics, and even cords, are homemade as well. The combined effect is a bizarre, post-apocalyptic mélange of steel, iron, wire, rust, rivet, knob, and cable; it's lunacy, arc-welded for maximum destruction. Concerts are seizures of motion. Wearing 40-pound guitars assembled entirely from scrap metal, the members don't play their instruments - they battle them, like mechanized golems. But make no mistake, this is not simply art with sharp edges and serious customs issues. Neptune rocks. Hard. Recalling the slapdash angularity of The Fall, the rhythmic ack-ack blasts of This Heat, and the sheer proto-clangor of Einstuerzende Neubauten, they count as one of the best experimental rock bands of any era. Their dynamic, expertly wrought songs and skilled improvisations don't start; they explode. "Gong Lake" is the band's first unlimited CD release, and with it the world will discover what fans of their live shows have known for years: Neptune is otherworldly.

Golden era Hollywood musicals, Jam & Lewis-inspired production techniques, the icy displacement of contemporary R'n'B, and the breadth of Arthur Russell's, disco, pop, and avant garde compositional work are referenced and married together by novelistic narrative strains, a lush instrumental palette, and a cinematic atmosphere.

Orwell
Le Génie Humain (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 26TH)
PS, FRANCE A feast of an album from Jérôme Didelot aka Orwell. Pop par excellence, "Le génie humain" is packed with orchestral maneuvers, soaring synths, and silky, buzzy goodness that bring Eggstone, Louis Philippe and the space bossa moments of Testbild! to mind. With influences running from the early 60s through the early 80s, Jerome's songs have a folk-like delicacy, but sail on intricate arrangements featuring strings, voices, woodwinds and keyboards galore. "Le genie humain" features collaborations with Médéric Gontier (Tahiti 80), Alexander von Mehren, JP Nataf, Ruth Minnikin (Heavy Blinkers), Miss Aprilia Sari (White Shoes and the Couples Company) and Julien Lonchamp (Jack and the'), among others. Our Sleepless Forest
S-T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 26TH)
PS, UK Absolutely stunning debut album of ambient electronic space rock from a frighteningly young three-piece from South London - their first full release, having had an early version of album track 'The Tinderbox' included on the Type Records 'Free The Future' compilation. Having met at school, Sam Purcell, Josh Rothberger and Karl Jawara started experimenting with various musical instruments and sounds using software and basic recording equipment, inspired by the music they were into and with the aim of creating their own wall of sound. After 14 months they emerged with something they were sufficiently happy with to allow it to be heard by others, and ultimately that brings us to the present day - an eight-track, 45-minute debut. Our Sleepless Forest's music is multi-layered, complex and dense, yet dedication and attention are rewarded as the intricate slow-build melodies are revealed beneath the feedback, crackle and hiss. Reminiscent at times of the likes of Loscil or even Radiohead's more out-there moments but on the whole avoiding the predictable comparisons associated with music of this genre, this is an album that simply has to be heard. Press to follow; opening track 'Nomads' was played by Mary Anne Hobbs a couple of months back, and influential Manchester-based website Angry Ape have lined up an interview with the band. TRACKLISTING: 1. Nomads 2. The Tinderbox 3. Doors In Limbo 4. White Bird 5. Aircastles 6. Afraid of You 7. The Clarion 8. Haze.

59.59 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 19TH)
PS, US THE SOCIAL REGISTRY is pleased to announce the debut full-length album from London-based band, SIAN ALICE GROUP, "59.59". The band is already on the rise in its native England having opened a string of shows for Spiritualized and received a flurry of attention in the press. "59.59" is a fully realized and album that moves through traditional pop songwriting and instrumental composition while tempering it with studio improvisation. It is an epic record that showcases the talent and range and of this young group, taking in elements of various genres and making them their own. At a time when the musical landscape seems inundated with derivative retrogressive guitar bands, or acts reliant on sequenced beats and oscillator knobs, Sian Alice Group's more classical inclinations show their willingness to tread their own path. 59.59 features guest appearances from DOUGLAS HART (Jesus & Mary Chain), JOHN COXON (Spiritualized, Spring Heel Jack) and BRIAN DEGRAW (Gang Gang Dance).

Skyphone
Avellaneda (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE MARCH 18TH)
PS, NORWAY This is the second full-length release by Danish trio Skyphone for the Rune Grammofon label. Having played in various rock outfits during most of the '90s, childhood friends Keld Dam Schmidt, Thomas Holst and Mads Bødker slowly moved towards the electronica scene and the German dub scene before starting Skyphone in 1999. Since then, they have steadily developed their own style, combining traditional rock instruments with electronics; scratching and carefully damaging the surface of the digital sounds, creating melodic pop songs without singing, leaving it to the listener to infer what the songs actually could have been and what is lurking virtually beneath the constrained, deliberately ambiguous surface of the song. With Avellaneda, they have further developed these ideas into a seamless blend of acoustic and electronic elements, rich in detail and sonic refinement, with the occasional touch of Scandinavian folk music providing a strong melodic base.

subtractiveLAD
Apparatus (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 26TH)
PS, US 'Apparatus,' SubtractiveLAD's fourth album, finds Stephen Hummel elaborating upon previous granular motifs. Those familiar with his progression will notice that Hummel's sound has matured and become grounded in an honest and open place. As such musical growth would imply, Apparatus is the album in which Hummel appears to be most comfortable with his ideas and usage of sound. It is this comfort, which allows Apparatus to envelop the listener in a profoundly personal way. Lofty classic ambient refrains, shoegaze splendor and muted broken beat trickery are all stylistic fair game. Comparisons can be made to a wide rage of artists such as Ben Frost, Eno, Namlook, and even label mate Bitcrush. As each SubtractieLAD album seems to top the previous, the anticipation is building for what is to come from this bright talent in electronic music.

Testbild!
Une Teinte Intense (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 26TH)
PS, SWEDEN "Une teinte intense" is a tribute to one of Testbild!'s greatest heroes: Isabelle Eberhardt, an explorer and writer who traveled the Sahara disguised as a man before dying in a flash flood in 1904 at the age of 27. Excerpts from her travel diaries float in a dreamy sound environment of Bedouin drums, echoing muezzin calls, and warm winds blowing in the distance, while pop melodies flow like spring water in the irrigation canals. Light as a mirage, this album bridges pop, jazz and exotica in the sun-bleached deserts of North Africa. Testbild! welcome the following influences into their Moorish tent: Louis Philippe, Gil Evans, Ludus, Edward Gorey, Eric Satie, the Hepburns, Jacques Cousteau, and Andrei Tarkovskij. "Excellent production qualities showcase a variety of modern, trans-continental pop, thanks to old-fashioned songwriting, and decorated with sampled bits and field recordings. What results sounds like the United Nations of Antena: a little dubby indie tropicalia here, a little Arabian ambient pop there, a little mod-pop Free Design/indielounge à la Sea and Cake there; but Testbild! maintain a skilled balance of sweet and mature throughout." - Other Music, NYC "Graceful, daring, inventive, full of charm and elegance." - Louis Philippe

Throw Me The Statue
Moonbeams (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 19TH)
PS, US Making waves throughout the latter half of 2007, we're super pleased to deliver Seattle's THROW ME THE STATUE'S debut album, "Moonbeams". Conceived and fronted by SCOTT REITHERMAN, "Moonbeams", was constructed with the help of CASEY FOUBERT (Sufjan Stevens, Pedro The Lion) to create a wondrous concoction of fuzzed out synths, brass ensembles and epic vocal melodies that have been noticeably absent since In the Aeroplane, Over The Sea first saw the light of day. At the album's core is a sharp sense of melody, a cutting lyrical honesty, and a bludgeoning beat that brings to mind the whimsy of Magnetic Fields, the lyrical expanse of The Microphones, and the lo-fi bliss of Eric's Trip. While the front of the album is nothing short of the next evolution of skewed Northwest bombast with "Lolita," "Yucatan Gold" and "About To Walk", the second half displays an unexpected maturity in young Reitherman. The title track oozes down tempo vulnerability while the closer, "The Happiest Man On This Plane" combines the best of Reitherman's predecessors Phil Elverum and Dave Bazan.

Tiger Lou
The Loyal (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE FEBRUARY 19TH)
PS, US Domestic release for Tiger Lou's latest. A Spring 2008 tour is in the works as well! Meet Rasmus Kellerman. This is the guy behind Tiger Lou. It's a band; for all intents and purposes, he's the band. He writes the songs, plays and produces them. For now. Kellerman will tell you not to look too close at "just an indie band, like many other indie bands, with a big heart." But not listening closely to Tiger Lou would be to sell it short.

The Loyal, the band's second album, is on the surface, just music. A bunch of songs written by some guy from Oxelösund, Sweden. Only these tunes breathe, they're dynamic, alive. Straight from the heart of some guy now living in Stockholm. And he wouldn't say the band had heart if, to some extent, he wanted you to know the music was sincere. Thirteen atmospheric, incorporeal (but alive) tracks that, if you put them under a microscope, would reveal a molecular pattern (and movement) identical to Kellerman's. Maybe that's why he'd like you to look plainly upon his work: he's already seen himself at such a high magnification, a potentially painful zoom into who and what he is, and where he came from.

Track one is a static beach journey duet w/ ADRIAN ORANGE & tracks 3, 4 & 5 are
collaborations w/ MARK EVAN BURDEN (Silentist) on drums."
