Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week

Noah Harris "The Sea & Age EP" CD5 $7.00 (Self-Released)
New solo offering from Elanors' Noah Harris. Live studio recordings of five songs of solo piano (bedecked with classical motifs) and voice (likened to noted carolers Rufus Wainwright, Thom Yorke and Jeff Buckley) recorded in a three hour window of time on a Monday morning in March of 2007. Plaintive piano and a gorgeous voice, methinks the lad's a genius. In addition to their work as Elanors Noah and his wife Adriel are also members of Corey Chisel & The Wandering Sons. [more] Hear sound samples on our front page.

Another 11th Hour Scandinavian Pick from Jim

Laakso "Mother, Am I Good Looking?" CD $14.25 (V2 Scandinavia)
Finally in stock, the new (2007) album from one of Sweden’s most beloved rock acts. We’ve charted Laakso’s promise from their debut as a freaky and frenetic elemental-folk band to the high drama, heroic-pop juggernaut they’ve become, as always earnest, emphatic and bleeding integrity from every nick and cut. This cathartic new album from these Swedish/Finnish folk-rock elementalists finds frontman Markus Krunegård’s uncanny vocal gyrations only slightly tempered; indeed it’s he and his idiosyncratic vocals that define Laakso’s sound and continue to, while exploring glossier, higher-fi-er textures and an expansive studio dynamic. Newcomers needing namedropping need not worry: Laakso’s been likened to Bright Eyes, The Bear Quartet, The Smiths, Radiohead, Pulp, Neutral Milk Hotel, David & The Citizens… Many are calling this the Scandinavian Album Of The Year and what I’ve heard so far makes me believe it, plus it’s produced by Bear Quartet guitarist and producer to the stars Jari Haapalainen. Another Swedish late-arrival that would've easily cracked my Best Of 2007 list had it arrived a couple weeks earlier! Also available: Laakso's new EP

A.A. Bondy
American Hearts
PS, US The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse ride through the first two tracks on A.A. Bondy's solo debut, American Hearts. The third track, "Black Rain Black Rain", recounts a personal plague, and on the fourth, "Rapture (Sweet Rapture)", he sings about, well, you know: "I don't want to talk about Jesus, I just want to see his face." Beset with demons but daring the Almighty to appear, Bondy has clearly forsaken the rock crunch of his former band Verbena-- which, despite their one-time hype, turned out to be a house built upon the sand-- and has reinvented himself as a southern preacher type, steeping blues-folk sermons in Biblical imagery and seeing fire and brimstone on the horizon, LOVE and HATE tattooed on his knuckles.

And yes, American Hearts can get a little heavy-handed, and yes, using "upon" instead of "on" (as in "like a ghost upon the breeze" or "six riders upon the ridge tonight") isn't fooling anyone. On the other hand, there's a dark gravity to this album, as if Bondy is carrying a heavy burden through a Civil War picaresque: American Hearts is an unfolding tableau of hell on earth as seen by a weary set of eyes and described with a troubadour's guitar and an obsessive's mastery of form and musical history. Those are blues line repetitions on "How Will You Meet Your End" and "Killed Myself When I Was Young", and they press the unanswerable questions and the doomsday imagery. That's actually a rag he's playing on "Vice Rag". That's New Orleans on "Rapture (Sweet Rapture)", conjured with Bondy's bleakly concise lines "you see that levee it's bound to break/ Put the children in the boat." And that's Bondy reclaiming Christ as a peacenik on the title track: "If your God makes war, then's he's no God I know," he sings, hinting at the Dylanesque protest made obvious by the harmonica solo, "'cause Christ would not send boys to die." - Pitchfork

Atkins, Nicole
Neptune City
PS, US On her 2007 Columbia debut, NEPTUNE CITY, New Jersey-raised/Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Nicole Atkins offers up a bold, vibrant set of songs that place her in the company of fellow pop eccentrics such as Rufus Wainwright, Fiona Apple, and Keren Ann. With her resonant voice and lush, inventive arrangements, Atkins sounds like an old soul, a point hit home by the jaunty album opener, ""Maybe Tonight,"" and ""Brooklyn's on Fire!,"" a majestic tune bolstered by strings and choir-like vocals.

PS, US The idea behind this project was based on 2 rules - only the sounds Meredith could get from his acoustic guitar or voice could be used & once recorded, there were no restrictions on how those sounds could be manipulated. The result is a record that can be described as both expansive & intimate, fractured & yet whole. Habibiyya
If Man But New
PS, US Tripsy 1972 album from members of The Action and Mighty Baby, inspired by Middle Eastern music...can't wait to hear this! Habibiyya's sole album stands as one of the earliest and most beautiful pieces of world music ever recorded in Britain. The musicians involved (including three members of UK underground legends Mighty Baby) had been profoundly affected, both musically and spiritually, by visiting Morocco in 1971, and became adherents of the Sufi faith. Upon their return to London they made If Man But Knew, featuring exotic instruments such as koto, shakuhachi and mandola alongside guitar, organ and drums, conjuring a hypnotic, otherworldly ambience in the process. It makes its long-awaited CD debut here, accompanied by detailed liner notes, previously-unseen photographs, five rare bonus tracks and an introduction by the group's leader, Ian Whiteman.

Laakso
Mother, Am I Good Looking?
PS, US New album, released earlier this year, from Nordic freak folk vanguard Laakso. Their recent embrace of dynamic pop grandeur just serves to insert their genius into even more ears. ALIEN HITS REVIEW: "Well, it doesn't really matter what you look like when you release something this good. Laakso have officially arrived with their third full-length, which can only be described as a masterwork. The band has proven mildly popular for the past few years with their unique brand of rock music, but with Mother, Am I Good Looking?, they've blown their sound wide open and created something ambitious in scope, fearless in melody, and altogether essential. With any luck, it should be the record that this band is remembered for."

Marsupilami
Arena
PS, UK Released in March 1971, "Arena" was the second and final album by the group Marsupilami. Initially a folk-based group the band evolved into one of the most adventurous, if unsung, bands of the early 1970's, producing two stunningly original Mellotron soaked albums. Featuring a line-up of brothers Fred and Leary Hasson (lead vocals and harmonica and keyboards respectively), Dave Laverock (guitar), Richard Lathan Hicks (bass), Jessica Stanley Clarke (flute, vocals) and Mike Fouracre (drums), Marsupilami drew early comparisons to such contemporaries as Quintessence and Gryphon, although in truth the group were far more experimental and powerful. Produced by Peter Bardens (soon to form CAMEL), the CD release of "Arena" will be welcomed by the legions of progressive rock afficianados. With this 24-bit remastered edition from ESOTERIC RECORDINGS, the conceptual "Arena" has never sounded better.

Mika
Life in Cartoon Motion [Bonus Track]
PS, US Mika's vivid, aptly named debut album, Life in Cartoon Motion, borrows and builds on the glittery, glamorous, and not-so-secretly sentimental musical territory carved out by Elton John and Freddie Mercury, or more recently, Rufus Wainwright and the Scissor Sisters. Fortunately, his name-dropping, shape-shifting pop is usually good, and genuine, enough to come across as eloquent homage rather than blatant thievery or a tired rehash. Mika's singles are his most charming moments, especially the instant sunshine of "Grace Kelly," which crams tap-dancing rhythms, filmic dialogue, Elton's pianos, Freddie's vocal harmonies, and Brian May's guitars into just over three minutes. "Relax (Take It Easy)" is in the same vein of hypnotic, danceable melancholy as the Scissor Sisters' reworking of "Comfortably Numb," albeit less showy, while "Billy Brown"'s brass arrangement, flowing melody, and soft-shoe rhythms give it the feel of an unusually witty show tune about pre-life crises and living in the closet. As Life in Cartoon Motion unfolds, it reveals more of Mika's musical identity, both for better and worse. His classical piano training gives the album an appealing fluidity, especially on "Any Other World," and lilting, Afro-pop-inspired guitars and harmonies pop up here and there, most effectively on "Big Girl (You Are Beautiful)." However, while Life in Cartoon Motion has lots of enthusiasm and creativity, it doesn't have a lot of nuance. On songs like "Lollipop" and "Love Today," Mika straddles the line between adorable and annoying. And as the overly long, overwrought "Erase" shows, he also doesn't have quite the masterful touch with gentler songs that his influences possess. As admirable as Life in Cartoon Motion's eclecticism is, it could use more focus -- something that songs like the jaunty breakup song "Stuck in the Middle" and angry rocker "Ring Ring" suggest Mika is developing. While more restraint could've taken the album from good to great, its Technicolor, everything-at-once, borderline overdone feel makes it a fitting portrait of Mika as a young artist. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide

Null, KK
Baryo Genesis
PS, POLAND From KK NULL- "The album opens up with the sound of insects & birds which I recorded live at wetland in Kakadu National park in Australia, that symbolizes organic life/organism (including our human bodies) composed of baryons. Then, abstract electronic noise overlaps them and takes you into a journey through deep inner and far outer spaces at any scales. However, you don't have to care about what I say here, I just hope this music inspires you as much as it does myself, and enjoy with your open mind and free imagination!! Technical note: all the music on this album was basically composed and created in my home studio and it was performed live along with some improvised processing, playing a synthesizer and my voice on top of that."

Pitre, Duane/Pilotram Ensemble
Organized Pitches Occuring In Time
PS, UK This LP comprises two 25 minute compositions of slowly-shifting luminous drone music utilising violin, cello, viola, bass clarinet, alto saxophone, tone generator, pump organ and guitars. Both pieces were arranged around score consisting of a set tonic, set pitch classes, playing methods and technique restrictions, with spontaneous conduction. Pitre's score serves as a structure for the Pilotram Ensemble to improvise upon, the construct of which has been conceptually likened to that of a living organism. Drawing comparison with the long-form drone improvisations of The Theater Of Eternal Music, as well as the solo works of La Monte Young and Terry Riley, 'Organized Pitches Occurring In Time' is 12 inches of majestic drone minimalism that achieves a unique sonic weightlessness. Players include Duane Pitre, Jon DeRosa (Aarktica), Tianna Kennedy, Eric Elterman, Harry Rosenblum, Casey Block, Craig Colorusso, Lathan hardy and Julianne Carney. This is the first release on Trome Records (or The Remains Of My Estate to give it it's full name) which is a new independent label based in London, UK, releasing lo-fi and ambient recordings on limited vinyl.

Planivaar
The Green Boat
PS, UK 2007 has been the busiest year yet for the artists' co-operative Make Mine Music with eight releases so far including full-length albums by Epic45, Library Tapes and All Sides. The latest name to be added to the Make Mine Music roster is Planivaar whose debut release for the label is the mini-album "The Green Boat". Planivaar began in 2005 as the experimental side project of artist Mark Lippett. There is no set approach but generally the music blends atmospheric guitar and keyboard with samples and found sounds. The first album, "The Orange Balloon", was released on net label Earth Monkey Productions in 2005, followed by the CD album "The Yellow Square" on Split Femur Recordings earlier this year. 2007 also marked the live debut of Planivaar where the performances were partially improvised sets of new music. "The Green Boat" is based on one of these concerts with added samples and overdubs. A thirty-minute drifting performance split into five connected pieces, the music on "The Green Boat" was inspired by late night conversations at a time when it would be wise to go to sleep.

Rare Bird
S-T
PS, UK Rare Bird are perhaps best remembered for having the distinction of being the first act to be released on Tony Stratton Smith's gloriously eclectic label Charisma records (also the home of GENESIS, THE NICE and VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR to name but a few) and for their excellent 1970 hit single "Sympathy". Like fellow future Charisma stable mates Van Der Graaf Generator, Rare Bird was formed around the principle of keyboard dominated progressive rock which eschewed the use of guitars. In December 1969 their eponymous debut album was released to great critical acclaim, (also becoming a US Billboard chart hit) and was followed in January 1970 by the release of "Sympathy" b/w "Devil's High Concern". The single reached the UK Top 30 and was a subsequent major hit throughout Europe.

PS, UK This superb album makes its long-overdue CD debut here, showing Redwing to be an excellent, unfairly neglected piece of the early 1970s Californian musical jigsaw. They had made an earlier psych-pop album as Glad, featuring Timothy B Schmit (later of Poco and The Eagles), and when he departed they regrouped and put together this classy collection of gritty rock and roll. It was much-praised on its original release in 1971, but despite gigging alongside acts including Delaney & Bonnie, Deep Purple, the Steve Miller Band, and releasing four further LPs, the band never got the commercial breakthrough they deserved.

Richard Twice
Self-Titled [re-issue]
PS, UK This glorious pop album, originally released in 1970, makes its long-overdue CD debut here. Named after the mysterious duo of Richard Atkins and Richard Manning, its beautifully crafted songs and glorious melodies have assured it an ever-growing cult reputation. The sleeve tells us these two songwriters are "as different as the sun and the moon in their daily lives, and yet who can sing songs that go directly to the heart of the matter, with a seemingly single mind and voice." Featuring top-notch backing from musicians such as Drake Levin (Paul Revere & the Raiders), Larry Knechtel (Bread), Mark Tulin (The Electric Prunes) and Rusty Young (Poco), it's bound to appeal to all fans of high-quality early '70s U.S. pop-rock.

PS, US "Japanese vocalist and instrumentalist Sachiko (Overhang Party, Vava Kitora, Kosokuya) looses a second, white-hot solo release. Her brilliant debut You Never Atone For on There/Musik Atlack rode gilded wings straight to the heart of the psych sun. The journey continues with Kunado. A tincture of Taj Mahal Travellers, wispy oscillations and lysergic vocals bathes the recording in delicate atmosphere as Sachiko's sonic attack leaves vicious and harrowing results. A listen not soon forgotten." ELECTRONIC

Simmons, Jeff
Naked Angels OST
PS, GERMANY Deluxe full color gatefold edition. "This is the first of two Straight label albums by Zappa's multi-talented 'sideman,' Jeff Simmons. In Seattle 1968 Herb Cohen and Frank Zappa were at the sound check for Jeff's band Easy Chair and were fascinated by Jeff's talent. He was soon signed to Straight records and later Jeff was in the Mothers of Invention at the time of 200 Motels. Both albums, Naked Angels and Lucille Has Messed My Mind Up were recorded in 1969. Reflecting strong fuzz guitar, heavy and psychedelicate surf-rock, Naked Angels, the original soundtrack for a Roger Corman cult biker movie, is a sequence of mostly instrumentals that combine the freedom of the late '60s mood and melody perfectly. This LP reissue comes with the original gatefold cover artwork by John Williams and includes the original French movie poster. This album is one of the coolest soundtracks made in the late '60s and was carefully remastered to sound today as fresh as it was 40 years ago."

Space Ritual
Otherworld
PS, UK A band formed by former founder members of Hawkwind, the group Space Ritual are true exponents of Space Rock, performing sell-out concerts drawing on "Classic" Hawkwind repertoire written by Nik Turner, Dave Anderson and Terry Ollis. Now Space Ritual come alive in the 21st Century with a stunning new studio album of original material that takes the ground breaking music of these ex-Hawkwind members into a new dimension that is both contemporary but still aware of its heritage and roots. Also featuring written poems by Sci-fi author Michael Moorcock, "Otherworld" has been described as "more Hawkwind than Hawkwind" by one commentator, but Space Ritual are more than that. They are a band in their own right, with their own style and future. Catch them on tour in the UK in October and on their new album, "Otherworld" now!

Tea Company, The
Come and Have Some Tea With The Tea Company
PS, GERMANY "From New York City, The Tea Company was one of the early birds from the U.S. psychedelic underground scene, with an LP on the market, originally released on Smash Records, in '68. This album stands for the evolution of the 45 rpm psych-garage bands to the upcoming LP-generation with extended improvisation parts. The music is inspired by The Beatles, using exactly the same equipment as them. The Tea Company played with lots of freaked out echo organ/guitar noises on a 12 string Rickenbacker and various stereo madness, reminding strongly of Syd Barrett's spirit but more driven by hard hittin' drums. The album is a mind-blowing, intense production (CD includes 4 bonus tracks by The Naturals). Remastered for this CD-release the sound is experimental, intense and fresh, the 8 page booklet contains a nice bio, photos and memorabilia. A must for those who wanna feed their minds with unusual early heavy psychedelic rock!"

Tenniscoats
Tan-Tan Therapy
PS, SWEDEN This is the seventh release for Tenniscoats, the Tokyo area-based husband and wife team of Saya and Takashi Ueno, and their first for the Häpna label. They are also members of the Japanese music collective Maher Shalal Hash Baz. On Tan-Tan Therapy, they distill the experiences of the last two years, when Tenniscoats and Tape (Andreas and Johan Berthling, Tomas Hallonsten) have socialized, toured together and exchanged musical ideas. The album gives a slightly new picture of Tenniscoats. Found here is a fuller dynamic spectrum and richer use of diverse sound elements that are usually found in their live shows. Yet the album has a concise pop feeling to it, in a calm and multi-faceted way. The level of detail and the different sound world is, to a large extent, due to the musicians of Tape, as they have been involved both in the production and arrangement of the record. To Tenniscoats' original setting, various horn instruments, double bass, zither, organ, glockenspiel and electronic instruments have been added. The recordings were intuitively constructed during a couple of days in Stockholm and Cologne with Tape, Andreas Söderström, Leo Svensson, Lars Skoglund and others.

Titus & Ross
Self-Titled [re-issue]
PS, UK This enigmatic duo from Marion, Indiana only made one album, which appeared in 1970 and stands as one of the most appealing underground folk-rock recordings of its time. Certain songs were used in contemporary TV and film productions, but their origins and subsequent history remains unknown. Full of beautiful melodies and hazy harmonies, as well as poetic lyrics and psychedelic flourishes such as recorder and fuzz guitar, the LP bears more than a passing resemblance to the work of Simon & Garfunkel, and is sure to appeal to fans of fellow hippie folk heroes such as Fresh Maggots, Linda Perhacs and Lambert & Nuttycombe.

Baja
Wolfhour (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 22ND)
PS, US Daniel Vujanic´s third full-length release under the alias Baja, entitled, intensively displays the composer/musician´s exciting approach towards a "free electronica" genre. Fusing stripped-down folk, (free-)jazz, twisted pop, electroacoustic sound, maximized-minimalism, indietronics, eerie chamber music and a portion of sedative post-post-rock, "Wolfhour" plays with postmodern expectations as much as possible while avoiding pretentious, highbrow implications. There is at least as much ear-friendly repetition as there is stunning fragmentation. Vujanic´s compositions range from psychedelic piano ambience to sunny uptempo-pop, from electronic jazz fusion to cryptic sample ruins. Leitmotifs appear, evolve and fall apart into transcribed bits of data nebula. Beginnings sound like ends and vice versa. Sounds teleport. Comments on Baja's Sound: "Mirroring the obstinacy and arbitrary nature of human emotions, Vujanic is using electronic music in a way that makes it less a statement about media or a contemporary discussion about subverting conventional songwriting than a tool of matter-of-factness..." - Coke Machine Glow "If the indie rock just isn't getting it done for you anymore, Baja's enveloping, intangible compositions may be just the guide you need to more engaging musical territory. Tiny Mix Tapes ...beautifully strange thing in between postrock, notebookindie, jazzy bitparts and occasional guitar eruptions and - yes, indeed - pop..." (10 points) - VISIONS Magazine.

Barjed, Mattias & Various Artists
Upp Till Kamp [original soundtrack] (PRE-ORDER: IN STOCK BY DECEMBER 18TH)
PS, SWEDEN Jim's Favorite Album of the Year 2007! The vintage-rock soundtrack to a cool new Swedish TV miniseries (about twenty-something rockers in early-70s Gothenburg) as created by Mattias Barjed, guitarist for The Soundtrack of Our Lives. I'll be interested to see how the songs and scores are used in the miniseries, but spread across two CDs it's like a freakin' Rock Opera, featuring a little bit of everything: Bjorn Olsson-esque acoustic and electric instrumental interludes, gritty organ-fueled garage-rock, some mesmerizing live stuff... So totally of-the-era, but I guess that is not surprising! Includes contributions from several of Barjed's TSOOL mates, including frontman Ebbot Lundberg; a brand new song from The Tallest Man On Earth; plus guest appearances by Elope's Sebastian Aronsson and Anders Person, Hipwhips' Markus Lindmark, The Frustration's Jan Martens, Mustasch's Ralf Gyllenhammar and series actors/stars Sverrir Gudnasson and Fanny Risberg, among others! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Celletti, Alessandra
Way Out (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 22ND)
PS, UK LTM is proud to announce a new studio album from Alessandra Celletti, the virtuoso Italian composer/pianist whose previous CDs include acclaimed interpretations of works by Glass, Satie and Gurdjieff. Way Out is Alessandra's third album of original material, following Overground (1997) and Chi Mi Darà le Ali (2006). Recorded in Rome in 2007, Way Out marks an innovative exploration of several musical styles, including vocal tracks sung by Alessandra as well as a number of her exquisite solo piano compositions. She is joined on most of the tracks by drummer Fabio Ferri, while Renzo Pin provided English-language lyrics. Stand-out tracks include Dear To Me, Burning and Hundred Points, the latter a future pop classic complemented by a brilliant animated video clip made by Tony Sbarbaro. A unique set that defies classification, Way Out also features one bonus song, the beautiful title track from Alessandra's previous artist album, Chi Mi Darà le Ali. The memorable cover image is the painting Pensando alla Guerra by artist Isobel Blank. Short biography: Alessandra Celletti studied piano at the Santa Cecilia Music Conservatory in Rome . After graduating she continued her studies with Vera Gobbi Belcredi, specializing in French piano works of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. In 1994 she released Les sons et les parfums, an album of pieces by Debussy, Ravel and Satie. Since then she has followed an irregular artistic path, characterized by sudden departures from classical music. Her second album, Viaggio a Praga, an exploration of the work of Bohemian composers, saw Alessandra awarded a scholarship by the Czech Republic in 1997. On returning to Italy she began working with Kha Records. Her collection Esoterik Satie proved hugely popular in France , and Gnossienne #1 was used by Guy Ritchie in his 2005 movie Revolver. Alessandra is now preparing to release two new albums. The Golden Fly will appear in Italy in October 2007, and Way Out by LTM in January 2008.

Chico Hamilton Quintet/Elmer Bernstein
OST: Sweet Smell Of Success (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 22ND)
PS, UK One of the most important films of the fifties, Sweet Smell Of Success boasts one of the great jazz scores; a combination of abstract jazz themes written and performed by the Chico Hamilton Quintet and a furious orchestral score by the masterful Elmer Bernstein. These albums were released seperately in 1957 - both became very considerable rarities - and are here combined in a single edition in digital format for the first time. Sweet Smell Of Success is memorable for the vicious performances of Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis and its uniquely nasty view of the tough underbelly of New York fifty years ago. It was directed by Alexander mackendrick ('The Ladykillers' 'Whisky Galore' 'The Man In The White Suite' 'Mandy') Its audience is with jazz and film buffs and the eternally stylish; strong export potential everywhere.

Dolenz, Jones, Boyce & Hart
Same (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 15TH)
PS, UK Almost immediately after the demise of The Monkees in 1970, there was industry clamour for a reunion and publisher Christian Dewalden came forward with an offer to finance the project. Micky Dolenz and Davy Jones were enthusiastic but as Mike Nesmith wasn't interested and Peter Tork couldn't be found a kind of pseudo-Monkees was created enlisting the services of gifted songwriting team of Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, who had written The Monkees first number one 'Last Train To Clarksville', 'The Monkees Theme (Hey, Hey We're The Monkees)' and '(I'm Not Your) Stepping Stone'. So Dolenz, Jones, Boyce & Hart was born. With the Monkees logo under copyright and not available for their use, the foursome set off on tour as 'the great golden hits of the Monkees - the guys who wrote 'em and the guys who sang 'em.' DJBH made its first public appearance on July 4, 1975 at six flags over mid-America in St. Louis, Missouri, where they were met by 12,500 of the same screaming fans who had followed the Monkees 10 years previously. Performing a raft of Monkee hits (Peter Tork had joined DJBH onstage at Disneyland) the band appeared on 'American Bandstand' and 'Don Kirshner's rock concert' and toured the States for a year before heading to the far east. They have the distinction of being the first American band to play in Thailand (they had to cut their hair to be allowed into the country!). The success of the American tour secured a contract with capitol records. The subsequent 'Dolenz Jones Boyce & Hart' was produced by Boyce & Hart and though light and very pop, is regarded as the most coherent Monkeerelated
release since 1967¹s 'Pisces Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones'.

Fair Weather
Beginning From An End (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 22ND)
PS, UK ANDY FAIRWEATHER LOW's CLASSIC PROGRESSIVE ALBUM - NOW 24-BIT REMASTERED WITH 6 BONUS TRACKS. Following the demise of AMEN CORNER, Andy Fairweather Low and fellow musical cohorts Blue Weaver, Clive Taylor and Dennis Byron underwent a musical transition into the band FAIR WEATHER. Heading into a "Progressive" direction the band adopted a harder edge and were the first act to sign to RCA Records' progressive imprint NEON (an attempt to rival Philips' VERTIGO label). Perhaps the most successful NEON signing, the band secured a UK TOP TEN hit in "Natural Sinner" before releasing their sole album, "Beginning from an End". Featuring guest contributions from DAVE EDMUNDS on "I Hear You Knockin'", although the album was a success in Europe, FAIR WEATHER lasted a mere 13 months before disbanding. This ESOTERIC reissue gathers together the album and six tracks released over three singles to comprise this definitive edition remastered reissue.

Strange Fruit (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 22ND)
PS, UK GARY FARR's LONG LOST CLASSIC FOLK ROCK ALBUM - NOW 24-BIT REMASTERED FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES WITH BONUS TRACK. Recording an album for Marmalade Records, Farr then signed to CBS Records in 1970, recording this sole album for the label. Sessions featured contributions from RICHARD THOMPSON on lead guitar and leading lights of the underground MIGHTY BABY. Unavailable on CD for many years, "Strange Fruit" is a record made by an often overlooked singer-songwriter made available once more by Esoteric Recordings and is certain to appeal to all who adore acoustic music both melancholic and uplifting. Fessenden
v1.1 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 22ND)
PS, US Joshua Convey, Stephen Fiehn, and Steven Hess (On, Pan American, Haptic) have been actively writing and performing as Fessenden since 2004. This Chicago/New York-based electro-acoustic trio creates distinct, atmospheric and progressive sound collages, at times weaving quietly subtle textures against harsh moments of volume, or low hums and buzzes against crisp percussion while drones interplay with staccato chords. "v1.1" represents their first release of studio-recorded material. An exercise in restraint, where hypnotic and atmospheric palettes create a vague sense of foreboding, this release engages the acute listener with new concepts of structure and texture. Praise for Fessenden: "Playing on a rusty knife edge, these artists mould a new genre of inquisitive reduction of technical abuse..." -Touching Extremes "Contemplative music that combines the best of improvised music, real instruments and yet manages to sound so micro-sound." -Vital Weekly "Like drifting Arctic waters in an atomic sub, slowly diving, headset plugged directly into the hull."- Avant Music News "One of the more patient ensembles I've heard, Fessenden members seem to be in no hurry to move things along here...just a few compass degrees this way or that...Fessenden provides a nice trip." -KFJC

Heaven
Brass Rock 1 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 22ND)
PS, UK CLASSIC PROGRESSIVE JAZZ ROCK ALBUM REISSUED ON CD OFFICIALLY FOR THE FIRST TIME- 24-BIT REMASTERED FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES. Heaven, a jazz rock group from Portsmouth, burst forth onto the British rock scene in 1970 when they appeared at the legendary Isle of Wight festival sharing a bill with The Who, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix et al. Making a stunning debut, the band (now managed by festival organiser Rikki Farr), soon secured a recording deal with CBS Records who signed the band for a large advance. The resulting double album "Brass Rock 1" appeared in 1971, adorned in a lavish fold-out sleeve. Well received critically, the album failed to achieve the expected success and Heaven soon disbanded, leaving behind a fine example of classic jazz rock. Officially released on CD for the first time, this Esoteric Recordings reissue is digitally remastered from the original master tapes and restores the artwork of the album in full.

Klein, Alan
Well At Least It's British (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 29TH)
PS, UK 60's Brit Pop with an influence on 90's Brit Pop. Includes rare Joe Meek produced tracks. All first time on CD, and first ever reissue. After writing the soundtrack to the quintessential pre- Beatles English pop movie What A Crazy World Alan Klein scored a deal with Decca to write and perform his view of English society at the time. His style of delivery was very distinctive, not unlike contemporary Anthony Newley, and writing like Lionel Bart. Alan was managed by Ken Pitt who also had another client called David Jones, soon to be David Bowie. That the early style of Bowie's delivery is also akin to Kleins must surely be more than coincidence. In the mid 90's Damon Albarn was asked about his influences and said about this LP " ...it was instrumental in me making Modern Life Is Rubbish, and changing and getting an idea of my own self.... I can't believe that David Bowie didn't know him inside out, and the same with Ray Davies. My favourite track goes ' he's a twentieth-century Englishman ' (see Blur's For Tomorrow). It's a fantastic record." Klein went on to tour the world as vocalist in the New Vaudeville Band. For bonus tracks we include the two singles he wrote and recorded in 1962, both produced by Joe Meek, and the 1965 singles including the withdrawn Age Of Corruption.

Kubin, Felix Und Das Mineral Orchester
Music for Theatre and Radio Play (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 22ND)
PS, GERMANY We are extremely excited to announce the 1st collaboration between the Dekorder label and our old friend, local conspirator and private hair gardener Felix Kubin. Kubin has achieved worldwide reputation by releasing post-dadaist, futuristic NDW-influenced Organ&Korg smash hits on his own Gagarin label, on A-Musik, Ski-pp, Meeuw, Diskono et al. He has collaborated with People Like Us, Coolhaven, Mark Boombastik, Asmus Tietchens, ensemble Intégrales, David Fenech, Ergo Phizmiz, Boris D. Hegenbart, Wojtek Kucharczyk and many others. His first recordings date back to his teenage years in the early 1980's, followed by his electroacoustic noise duo Klangkrieg and the pseudo-communist Liedertafel Margot Honecker. Right from the start Felix Kubin has written and recorded music for films (hence the title of his first album) by the likes of Mariola Brillowska and Anke Feuchtenberger and continues the German tradition of "Hörspiel" (radio play) with works such as "Territerrortorium", "Nachtspeicher", "Orpheus' Psykotron" and "Syndikat für Gegenlärm" (with guest appearances by Matmos, DAT Politics and Wolfgang Müller of Die Tödliche Doris). Some of Kubin's most gorgeous and adventurous works are his contributions to "The Raft" (a radio play by the mysterious Xentos Bentos of The Homosexuals, directed by Lukas Simonis of Coolhaven, Trespassers W, Dull Schicksal) and his soundtracks for theatre plays by Branko Simic ("Zufall", based on a short story by Vladimir Nabokov) and the notorious Schorsch Kamerun. The latter (known in Germany as a member of Goldene Zitronen) directed "Hollywood Elegien" based on a song cycle by Bert Brecht and Hanns Eisler. Now the best parts of these works are for the first time available on LP and CD, simply (and aptly) titled "Music for Theatre and Radio Play". While the musical spectrum on this release covers a variety of styles and moods it's still almost immediately recognizable as a typically Kubin-ist work featuring the main ingredients his records and body-and-mind-boggling live shows are famous for. Twisted rythms & playfully clever arrangements that could have been created by a mutated reincarnation of the legendary Juan Esquivel; hauntingly ethereal tracks sounding like a narcoleptic John Carpenter playing Angelo Badalamenti arrangements; contorted Big Band music, pre-war Schlager and Vaudeville sent through a malfunctioning pre-digital time machine; Ennio Morricone cloned as a Russian male choir; instrumental workers' songs Hanns Eisler might have imagined in a feverish nightmare - it's all there, and more!

Nyro, Laura
More Than A New Discovery (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 29TH)
PS, UK Rev-Ola proudly re-presents the album which introduced to the world the wonderful talent of Laura Nyro! More Than A New Discovery (aka The First Songs) is openly informed by the styles of Laura's youth. She had just turned 19 when she recorded the album in early 1966, and the songs retain a youthful exuberance and glisten with beautiful pop melodies and then-fashionable, sturdy 1960s New York arrangements. Laura's lyrics are already as poetically-charged and mature as at her peak, from the wise "And When I Die" to the observational approach of "Buy and Sell." Musically, the album was obviously tailored to fit the prevailing landscape of 1960s female pop singers and it often has the same soulful atmosphere of Dusty Springfield and Evie Sands or the brash, bravura pop of Barbra Streisand, who was to take "Stoney End" to the charts three years later. Although Laura's albums would become more and more influential and adventurous, this, her first outing, features the majority of her most famous and revered compositions. Due to production decisions she did mot agree with, Laura Nyro more or less disowned her debut for many years, until the music fan in her began to appreciate the set forms as one might a Motown hit of the period, no matter how overexposed and hackneyed. With new manager David Geffen, a slew of covers of her material hitting the charts, and a controversial showing at the Monterey Pop Festival, Laura Nyro signed a favourable new deal with Columbia Records, making some of the most essential albums of the late 1960s and 1970s...but that is another, quite wonderful story. Listen now to where it all began. Fantastic album by one of our very favourite artists! Beautifully re-mastered in true RevOla style with lovely packaging as usual... A must for all fans of Laura Nyro, and of classic New York girlpop... the set form she made into so much more!

Patchen is one the most important american writers of the 20th century and Ferlinghetti wrote 'Coney Island Of The Mind' which sold a million copies. In terms of both attitude and style, Patchen and Ferlinghetti paved the way for Bob Dylan, Jim Morrison and Captain Beefheart. Randomnumber
Modern Ambivalence (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE DECEMBER 18TH)
PS, JAPAN Modern Ambivalence is the fourth album by Leeds long standing proponent of electronic music, RandomNumber. Modern Ambivalence is the latest incarnation of an evolving style which has taken shape over the past eight or so years which flowered from early noise experiments that gave way to a tentative and primitive electronica that was released on the now defunct, yet legendary CDR label, Fencing Flatworm. Since these early digital musings Robson's music has charted a course of increasing melody and of rhythmical complication with releases for California's Rocket Racer 2002's Understand Your Date & Time of Nowhere and Mogwai's Rock Action 2001's NME Dance single of the Week "The Fact That I Did" EP, Towards The Forlorn Society (2003) for Catmobile Records took the trademark sound to it's limit with it's brittle and unsettling mix of rhythmic obfuscation and winter smeared synth impressionism that tested the boundaries of home brewed electronic music. During this period, other more accessible EPs and mixes appeared for labels as diverse as Vacuous Pop and Irritant (who gave homes to early releases by Kid606, Knifehandchop and Printed Circuit). Shows with the likes of I Am Robot & Proud, Printed Circuit, Kid 606 and Cex would see the randomNumber live performance taken across the waters to France, USA, Mexico and Canada throughout the whole 2002 to 2004 period and would represent Robson's most prolific period of international touring as a solo artist. The tensions of these awkward, yet compelling mid-period pieces soon gave way to a more confident and relaxed sound that was no less compromising in it's desire to chart the dark and melancholic landscape of contemporary electronica, but presented a more coherent and accessible sound that appealed to a wider audience. Golden Acre Sleeps (Highpoint Lowlife) (2006) ushers in the dawn of a Post-Electronica era of scene fragmentation and ghettoisation with bedroom producers increasingly marginalized into obscurity or MP3 mediocrity, against this backdrop, Golden Acre comes across as a breath of fresh air from the very grassroots of the scene. Throughout this recent period, the randomNumber sound continues to develop, as Golden Acre was being released to a world increasingly enthralled by the new breed of over confident pretty boys with guitars, giddy on corporate expense accounts, Robson continues to be a credible live performer at both rock and electronic shows, playing with the likes of Thee More Shallows, Pram, Clark, A Silver Mount Zion, Christ and Bracken to name a few, showcasing material from the Modern Ambivalence sessions.

Sambassadeur
Migration (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 22ND)
PS, SWEDEN Migration is a sparkling pop album, where breezy vocals meet deceptively sunny arrangements that perfectly wrap up the most heartfelt melodies. Biography: Sambassadeur debuted on Labrador in winter 2005 with the release of the "Between the Lines"-EP. The EP was followed by their self-titled debut album later that year. The songs were all recorded at home which gave the production a primitive quality that labeled them by some as being a lo-fi-twee act. This was never the bands intention. If the cliché is that songs are like children, then Sambassadeur saw no purpose in stagnating in front of their home-computer while watching their kids being taken custody by those who didn't have the ability to, indeed, read between the lines and see through the understated surface of the songs. This called for some change. The EP "Coastal Affairs", released in may 2006, marked the start of a development towards a more luxurious setting. Without loosing their enigmatic qualities, songs like "Kate" and "Marie" introduced a breeze of new confidence. The Sambassadeurs saw the opportunity to take things to even greater heights and returned to the scene in late august 2007 with "Subtle Changes".

Samurai
S-T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 22ND)
PS, UK Classic Progressive rock album - Now 24-bit remastered from the original master tapes. New essay & interview with Dave Lawson. "Samurai" is truly a lost classic of the Progressive era. Released on the short lived Greenwich Gramophone label in 1972, the album was influenced by the experiments of groups such as KING CRIMSON, GENTLE GIANT et al, but was more than a mere clone of these bands. Evolving from the equally excellent band WEB (whose album "I Spider" is a classic of the genre), the musicianship on the album was excellent and Keyboard player DAVE LAWSON's compositions were groundbreaking and memorable. Sadly the group disbanded shortly after the release of the record resulting in limited sales. However, the influence of the album was not lost as both DAVE LAWSON and TONY REEVES soon joined DAVE GREENSLADE to form the group GREENSLADE, effectively taking up the musical mantle laid down by SAMURAI. This Esoteric reissue features a booklet with previously unseen photographs and an interview with DAVE LAWSON.

Scientists, The
Swampland: Birth Of The Scientists (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JANUARY 22ND)
PS, UK Formed in Perth, Australia, but later to relocate to Melbourne and then London, Kim Salmon's Scientists played a brand of minimalist punked-up swamp blues that saw them become legends on at least three continents. Just about everyone loves the Scientist, from Sonic Youth and Mudhoney (both of whom have asked the band to play with them) to Sub Pop to Henry Rollins - in fact, the entire US alt-rock hierarchy. And what's not to like - this new compilation for the UK features the strongest tracks from the band's legendary Blood Red River recordings, notably 'Swampland', one of the most evocative and best loved Australian songs of all time. But that's not all: as well as the studio recordings, with Kim's permission
