Howdy y’all,

Well, good ol’ Paul has graced us with his presence for a few days until next Tuesday rears its post-Monday shenanigans (hi folks! – pc). All you faithful mail order customers can rest easy knowing in the back of your head that upon his return he will shower you all with tightly packed parcels and a pinch of small town electronic mail hospitality.

Yeah, yeah. I know. No one is going to want to talk to me anymore (hi folks! – roy) ‘cause I’m a mean old thing that smells like a dirty old boot. However, I’ve got the cuts covered and I’m about to shimmy the sheets off those bad puppies and throw y’all to the hounds, ya heard.

Rescue tactics down below.

Into you like a train,

Roy & Paul

Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week

Mellow "Perfect Colors" CD $26.00 (Atmospheriques)
Not new, but long overdue, an outright neo-psychedelic masterpiece from French electro-pop-alchemists Mellow, released in 2004, only available as an import. Fans of fellow Franco-poppers like Air, Daft Punk and even Phoenix can cozy-up, but there’s so much more to Mellow’s dream-pysch opuses. Like plush, proggy baroque-pop complexities that recall nothing less than Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd, The Beatles at their lysergic best, along with the nodding, narcoticized ruminations of Spacemen 3’s extended family. Sound samples on our front page.

Roy's Vinyl Pick of the Week

Low "Santa's Coming Over b/w The Coming Of Jah" 45 $4.75 (Subpop)
Low returns with two new tracks on this unusual festive 45. The a-side is a menacing ode to the night before Christmas, while the b-side is a supremely executed reggae number. The 7” is beautifully packaged in an iridescent white paper sleeve, with a punch-out paper ornament, and comes with an enclosed coupon to download the songs as mp3s.

23 Skidoo
Seven Songs + Singles
PS, UK Expanded reissue on CD by seminal post-punk group 23 Skidoo. Initially active between 1979 and 1987, 23 Skidoo released a series of genre-defining records fusing post-punk, dub, industrial, world and hip-hop styles. Singles include Last Words, Tearing Up The Plans, Coup and Language. Albums include Seven Songs, The Culling Is Coming and Urban Gamelan. In 2000 the group returned with a self-titled album, 23 Skidoo, and remain hugely influential. Originally released on Fetish Records in February 1982, the mini album Seven Songs topped the indie charts and established 23 Skidoo as a groundbreaking commercial force. "Intoxicating - one of the most exciting records I've heard since Unknown Pleasures" (Paul Morley, NME, 1982); "23 Skidoo conceived of funk as a sinister energy, and Seven Songs still sounds bloodcurdlingly intense" (Simon Reynolds, Rip It Up & Start Again, 2005). Digitally remastered, this extended CD includes seven bonus tracks from the singles Last Words and Tearing Up The Plans. The booklet also features a detailed history of the elusive group, with contributions from Skidoo members past and present.

Aan Meets Eyes Like Saucers
Kristallivirta
PS, US While some moments sound like an even more far-out Angus MacLise, that's about where any comparison ends. To be certain, this is among the most challenging releases on the label; certainly not for beginners of any of the the bands involved (KULKIJA, UTON, EYES LIKE SAUCERS), but rewarding to those who recognize there is an outer-margin to where music is today, & draw satisfaction from hearing half-crazed (fully crazed?) musicians trying to push those margins.

Akimbo
Jersey Shores
PS, US AKIMBO are back (after past releases for Alternative Tentacles & Seventh Rule) w/ anothr hearty ass-kicking that will remain a paramount moment of their recording careers - treading a more mysterious & brooding territory. Inspired by the infamous & bizarre legacy left from a string of shark attacks that haunted the New Jersey coast in 1916. Loud, riotous, rebellious & defiant rock and roll.

Alpha
The Sky Is Mine
PS, SPAIN This is Alpha's eighth album (including last year's compilation of collaborations and remixes, 'Without Some Help') but is their first 'vocal' album since 2003's 'Stargazing'. Whereas previous albums featured a number of vocal collaborations, this time it is only long-term member Wendy Stubbs singing on The Sky Is Mine. And just as their debut 'Come From Heaven' (released on Massive Attack's Melankolic label) was widely acknowledged as a classic collection of trembling torch songs, so this album develops that strand dramatically further. Whilst still deploying their skills for gentle experimentation, Alpha have tunnelled their sound out to a bolder, brassier landscape with Wendy often belting out her melancholic choruses like one of her hero, Shirley Bassey. When Wendy first started working with Alpha they already had a lot of musical influences in common such as Scott Walker, Michel Legrand and Burt Bacharach. They also shared a love of simple love songs, mixing and merging different genres with bittersweet melodies thrown around by giddy synths and melodramatic strings. Over the years Alpha have worked with many varied artists (Jarvis, Acid Casuals, Blueneck, Coldplay to name a few) and are known for their inventive and emotional production. Last year Corin Dingley mixed the James Roberts album (a NME 9/10 on release) and more recently finished work on the superb debut lp by The Heavy who were promptly signed to Ninja Tune and whose album is released in the Autumn.

Analogue Minefield
Visions In Sonic Sense
PS, UK 3D digipak with 3D-spex!!! Analogue Mindfield's Gizzy D explains that the groups wants to, "create auditory soundscapes of challenging yet accessible music, whilst retaining an inspired socially conscious theme to our tunes". This ferociously creative outfit indeed harks back to a golden age when reggae called itself roots and planted socially conscious lyrics into the public's consciousness. Delivered with sensitivity and passion over stellar riddims, laid down by musicians with an intrinsic feel for the groove, whilst adding a 21st century update in message and incoming musical influences, the results are 100% dynamite. The three main participants are Gizzy D, Snapper J and Kitty B, who are joined on their third studio album, Visions In Sonic Sense, by a supporting cast of singers and players including MC Ishu (Step 13, Manasseh Soundsystem), MC Jaz (DJ Reeza, Scribble Orchestra and now Analogue Mindfield's new live MC), techno forager Suspira (Transient Dreams who have worked with Eat Static and Ozric Tentacles), Asian Dub Foundation's Dr Das on occasional bass and G Frequency (Goontrax, Domination Records) providing some luscious double bass and top turntablism. From the upbeat politically-biting skank of Political Patsy to haunting female-sung ballad Reflections, they handle conscious roots outings like Mediocracy and the brass-splattered toast of Eire Beag like the great Jamaican vocal groups of the 70s but still take the form to new vistas in roots dub ballad Dread Up, all bathed in a rich dub afterglow. Be Careful Out There could be a new street anthem for the 21st century while Music Man seems to put an 80s electro-pop outing through the dub blender. Over the years, Analogue Mindfield have worked with a diverse array of UK and Jamaican musicians and made a substantial impact with their first two albums, 2006's Digital Brainwave and last year's A Fine Adjustment of Time. Their third album is a mature affirmation of their vision and talent for working with sympathetic co-conspirators while grasping the original multi-cultural roots ethic and taking it into modern times. As to be expected from a Malicious Damage act, Analogue Mindfield don't confine themselves to the one genre they might be identified with: Soul Crew brings in elements of UK free party dub-techno while Burnt Out plants its incisive rhythms over a drum 'n' bass charge. The possibilities are infinite. Leftfield's Cheshire Cat once described the band as, "a heavyweight mix of reggae, old school dub with vibrant brass-driven skankŠ like a mouthful of liquorice allsorts!" while Primal Scream's mighty Mani declared, "You've got to get Weatherall to listen to these tracks man, he'll fookin' love em!" So will you.

Armpit
Tron + Anaru EP
PS, US Project of Clayton Noone (CJA, FUTURIANS). Like so many of the people way out in front in the NZ experimental music scene, this is definitely roughly hewn; pure, frantic free-noise taken as a snap-shot, not as a polished, emasculated 'album.' Think classic Dead C, along w/ a bunch of HCorp releases - though this seems far more chaotic, & it seems as though at any moment the whole thing is about to fall apart, though it never does.

Autodrone
Striking A Match
PS, US Their debut album is darker, denser and more experimental, yet catchy & hook-laden than any of their previous work. Seamlessly melding the sonic dynamics of noise & pop w/ throbbing bass lines, jagged angular synths, searing dark atmospheric guitars & urgent banshee vocals-the album has received a deluge of critical acclaim & has made it onto multiple best of 07' lists, thought it was unreleased at the time.

Bee Gees, The
Best of Bee Gees [re-issue]
PS, US Collects the Gibb Bros' pre-disco baroque-pop genius, originally release on LP in 1969. Could be the first time on CD? ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "If anyone needs conclusive proof that the brothers Gibb weren't always the chest-medallion-flashing kings of mainstream disco or, since about 1980 on, meaningless AOR washouts, the nearly 40-minute collection of the Bee Gees' earliest hits will suffice in spades. At their (perhaps, in hindsight) surprising best, the threesome, along with capable if generally unremarkable rhythm section members Melouney and Colin Peterson, created a slew of tender, affecting, and quite lovely hits. While the Stonesproto-metal crowd of the time probably thought them unbearably wimpy, their songwriting acumen, combined with their harmonies, fine production by Robert Stigwood, and ace orchestral/band arrangements by Bill Shephard, holds up astonishingly well... Considering that everyone from Catherine ("Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You") and Jimmy Somerville ("To Love Somebody") to Low ("I Started a Joke") and Jose Feliciano ("I've Gotta Get a Message to You") has covered something from this collection is testimony to the songs' continuing influence."

Black Christmas
By Way Of Decay
PS, US Very 1st release from the band's own BAD AGE Records. BLACK CHRISTMAS is a 5-piece instrumental band (feat ex-members of MINUS STORY) from Lawrence, Kansas w/ some members currently residing in Chicago. Their debut here is the sound of 4:03am western Kansas, the echo & the calm, the Kansas prairie rechristened 'By Way Of Decay.' Born from the brooding '70s Italian film scores of Goblin, the desolate crescendos of Spacemen 3, the minimal bombast dialogue of Godspeed You! Black Emperor - this is impressively composed, sonically explosive & mesmerizing. A beautiful concussion. Comes in really nice, thick, hand-screened cardboard gatefold sleeve.

Bubblegum Lemonade
Doubleplusgood
PS, US 'A Billion Heartbeats' kicks the album off w/a 150 bpm adrenalin rush-if the Jesus & Mary Chain had studied anthropology they may have written something like this. Meanwhile, 'Beautiful Friends' is a paper thin celebration of surface beauty sort of like The Byrds' 'Lady Friend' re-written by the Valentines, & 'I'll Never Be Yours' is big chorus pop featuring Sandra from fellow Glasgow pop outfit STRAWBERRY WHIPLASH on backing vocals. 'Tired Of Sleeping' is a jangledelic ode to sleeping w/the radio on, complete w/multi-tracked 12-string Rickenbacker action straight from the early days of Creation or Cherry Red. 'Last Time I Saw Andrew' moves us into the '90s w/a lazy, looping, slow burning nostalgia somewhat like a cross between Slowdive & Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

Burnes, Andrew
Telescope
PS, US TABLE OF THE ELEMENTS happily presents the long-overdue solo debut of ANDREW BURNES. Burnes, along with DAVID DANIELL, is a founding member of the ethereal, post-blues ensemble San Agustin; he's also a member of Haunted House, alongside Loren Mazzacane Connors; and he's performed in improv settings with the likes of Ken Vandermark and Thurston Moore. Finally committed to vinyl, he doesn't disappoint: "Telescope" is a glittering chunk of sound, as Burnes transforms that particular emblem of Americana, the steel guitar, into one vast, slowly undulating drone. Andrew Burnes' name may not be familiar, but fans of the genre needn't worry. Back in 1993, Table of the Elements' original Guitar Series featured what was only the second US solo release from a similarly unknown artist: Jim O'Rourke. You can trust us again with this one.

Carlberb, Pelle
The Lilac Time
PS, SWEDEN In January 2008 Pelle Carlbergs plays his last gig of the "In a nutshell"-tour in Kuala Lumpur and returns to Sweden to write songs for his third solo album. He buys an abandoned church in a desolated area of the island of Gotland and spends six weeks there. - I had to leave Stockholm to make this album. In the middle of nowhere it's easy to write in soulful and relaxed. (Pelle Carlberg) 'The difficult third album' has rarely seemed more natural and free from pressure. "The Lilac Time" is English pop moving to Rio de Janerio and bringing along a seductively light breeze of Swedish melancholia. Pelle has managed to write his finest melodies to this date and his lyrics are so full of exact everyday observations and wry humor it's close to deadpan. Pelle Carlberg has released no less than six albums in the 21st century. The first three with Edson and the latter as a solo artist. His development as an artist has been unusual in the words most positive meaning - for every album he sounds more curious, spontaneous and personal. Ever since Pelle Carlberg started Edson in the late 90's he's had an ever-growing fan base all over the world. For each release a number of new countries are added to his release, - and tour, schedule. Apart from Europe and the US his albums are also released by labels in for example Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, Indonesia and Korea.

Castanets Vs. Ero
Dub Refuge
PS, US "Dub Refuge" turns a minimalist folk record (CASTANETS' "City of Refuge") into a ghostly dub, subverting dub tradition while still nodding in the direction of King Tubby, Scientist, Burning Spear, and Sly and Robbie. "Dub Refuge" works because Castanets and ERO GRAY (aka Papa Alabaster, sometimes bass player for Castanets, and member of Brooklyn-based Rad Unicorn) are both preoccupied with ghostly, ephemeral and messy sounds. Ero and the Castanets share a haunted quality in their music, a unique dedication to risk, and a reverence for accident in folk music. (Stray string squeaks, cracking voices and odd echoes can be more rewarding than intentional harmonies or suavely competent riffs.) At it's best, Castanets music accomplishes an eerie and very difficult balancing act between the disaster-surfing of experimental and noise music, and the sort of calm competence shown by classic country singers. "The City of Refuge" sessions exemplified this balance, and here on "Dub Refuge", Ero has emphasized both aspects without destroying either.

caUSE co-MOTION
It's Time! Singles & EPs 2005-2008
PS, US They have built up a rabid following playing way too many shows to count during the last 6 yrs, w/ bands like Love Is All, Vivian Girls, Tyvek, Japanther, The Apples In Stereo, Crystal Stilts, & many others. Using reverb as a weapon, CCM has honed their hyperactive sound into a formidable DIY pop lexicon. This neatly summarizes the history of the band so far - a blast of pure pop energy & DIY sincerity for these all-tooknowing & ironic times. 14 songs race by in barely over 20 mins, the compressed rush of melody, tunes, & crash-bang energy perfectly mirroring the hormonal frenzy of adolescence & young adulthood. Hailed by the likes of Brooklyn Vegan, Dusted, etc. "These guys' sincerity, live or on record, cannot be doubted. Their tunes are great; it's hard even to single out the catchiest"-PITCHFORK

Champagne Riot
Paris & I (7"+CD)
PS, US Super Limited!! Think of the Human League's Dare!, ostensibly a collection of love songs made to sound like science fiction; or New Order's plainspoken anti-poetry couched in synthetic symphonies that were the very antithesis of the everyday. It is this largely abandoned idea of the velvet melody in the robotic glove to which Champagne Riot aspires. A product of very limited means - "mainly a Roland MC-307 groovebox and a couple of old guitars," says Caspar - but the luxuriousness of the finished product belies the budget with which it was made. Songs such as "Scandinavian Warfare," "I Dream About You at Night" & "Heroes of Our Time" are rich with sonic detail, and choruses that are enveloping in their windswept grandeur. They sound like urban life in all its wonder & sadness, its busyness & also its terrible loneliness.

Daniell, David
I-IV-V-I
PS, US DAVID DANIELL is one of the hardest-working guitarists in avant-garde show business. He leads the troops in Rhys Chatham's guitar armies; he was a member of Jonathan Kane's rollicking band February; and he performs regularly in a duo with Tortoise's Doug McCombs. He's collaborated with Tim Barnes, Thurston Moore, and Loren Connors; and his guitar work with his own band, San Agustin, is the stuff of which fleeting blues-drone dreams are made. With influences rooted in blues, American minimalism, and post-punk ideologies, Daniell's guitar playing is always inspired; when fused with his intricate electro-acoustic compositions, the results are breathtaking.

Danielson
Trying Hartz
PS, US "Trying Hartz" samples the first decade of the DANIELSON/DANIELSON FAMILE/ BR. DANIELSON oeuvre (all the years before "Ships"), attesting generously to the movement of the work as a whole, from proto-minimalist eccentric gospel band to prog-metal-dread outfit to music hall choir to indie rock one-man band to outsider art celebrity to family man and family member. It's a perfect starter volume for listeners who have not had the pleasure of engaging with the evolution of this unusual, surprising, and incredibly moving musical consortium. And yet: please note that no verbal account of the work can possibly summon the effect of the decade digested in this assemblage. After all, as Daniel sings, "My Lord is known by His song." Not by His press releases. The ecstatic vision of the Danielson project is the unnamable part, the impossible to describe part, and this ecstatic vision is cumulative. It's not what Daniel says, though he always says it well, it's the circumstances in which he says it, with family gathered around him, whether related by blood or not; it's the reiteration of the spiritual thematic material, a reiteration that sounds nothing like early 20th century gospel-it's far more poeticized, it's far more elemental-but which has all the seriousness and all the joy of that long ago music. Ecstatic vision. You won't get it by reading these lines, nor even by reading the lyrics. You will get it by listening to this distillation of ten years' work and the earlier albums and going to the shows. Then you will experience the humble but devious and complicated grassroots movement that is Danielson. "Trying Hartz" is an essential place to start.

De La Mancha
Atlas
PS, SWEDEN Goteburg, Sweden duo's debut full-length is a collection of exquisite shoegazing postrock drama. DLM was founded by childhood friends Jerker Lundh and Dag Rosenqvist, who shared a mutual admiration for groups like Red House Painters, Sigur Rós, Led Zeppelin and My Bloody Valentine. Atlas is the title of de la Manchas' debut album and it's an album full of contrasts and beauty. Clocking in at just over an hour, its nine songs ranges from moments of serene and hushed melancholy to distorted shards of pure white light. It's an album where words, voice and instrumental parts are interweaved into a beautiful fabric, filled with both light and darkness.

Recorded at the Mayfair Theater in Santa Monica, CA, in front of an invited audience at the conclusion of the tour, the shows were also filmed with the intent of releasing a long form concert film. Dead Can Dance
S-T (Remastered)
PS, US On their eponymous debut, released in 1982, they successfully harnessed a bewitching barrage of sounds, layering grinding guitars and even a dulcimer-like yang chin over a taut wash of percussion. Their range is staggering, as is their disciplined economy, with no song lasting more than four minutes or degenerating into formless cacophony.

Roots And Wire
PS, US DEADBEAT is Scott Monteith, a long-time Montrealer & recent Berlin ex-pat who has been releasing his own special blend of dub-laden, minimal electronics since 2000 for labels such as Cynosure, Musique Risquée, ~scape, & Spectral, to name but a few. His 1st full-length release for WAGON REPAIR here is aesthetically informed by his long term collaborative friendship w/ ROBERT HENKE (aka MONOLAKE), the close proximity of his fellow artists in Berlin & the opportunity to collaborate w/ PAUL ST. HILAIRE (aka TIKIMAN). It is no surprise that an album of such vast scope be largely inspired by the artist's own transition from Montreal-based producer releasing on Berlin label ~scape for 5 years, to Berlin-based producer releasing on a Canadian label. An uncanny logic is present throughout, weaving a fluid narrative from disparate influences & styles. Might just knock you off your seat.

Deer Tick
War Elephant
PS, US New album from intriguing solo-acoustic troubadour dude. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "John McCauley, aka Deer Tick, has been on a non-stop tour since graduating from high school in 2004. He often performs without amplification, delivering tunes with just his voice and guitar, an experience that gives his vocals the primal power of a turn of the (last) century mountain balladeer. McCauley's a singer/songwriter with finely crafted literary lyrics married to folkie melodies that sport influences from rock, blues, country, and pop, as evidenced by his cover of Anthony Newley's "What Kind of Fool Am I?." McCauley transforms the tune into a country waltz, straining to reach the high notes, replacing Newley's measured regret with desperation and agony, although the mood is broken by a goofy, loping instrumental bridge just before the last two verses. The rest of the album, originals penned by McCauley, is more straightforward -- tunes about lost love, loneliness, and heartache delivered simply, highlighting McCauley's emotionally charged, unadorned vocals."

Desolation Wilderness
White Light Strobing
PS, US "White Light Strobing" is the debut album of the band DESOLATION WILDERNESS. Recorded in the winter of 2008, supposedly the dark months but there is a beauty hidden there, too. Sound waves transmuted through archaic vacuum tubes and dusty transistors, magnetized on to a playable medium. A rush of air pressure, a few more charged ions here and there. Somehow, out of chaos comes order, a record of an event at a specific time and place. "White Light Strobing", Strobing, like what movies do, or sunlight, or even sound: More than meets the eye. "White Light Strobing" contains songs straight from the wide-awake dream world about simple things (love, escape, the open road) which transform before your ears into something else entirely. Similar to the experience of being inside all day and then walking outside to find yourself blinded by the light of the sun, blinking in a daze. What just happened? More than meets the eye. The meanings of words are transcended by their texture, what they rest upon. Lingual poetry as visual poetry as aural poetry; sung in any language, it is understood.

With a folk singing Janis Joplin, the 13th Floor Elevators, peyote, LSD and the first psychedelic music venue in Texas, Austin was a fertile ground for the emerging counter culture of the 1960s. Seen as nonconformists, Beatnik inspired students were drawn together by folk, country and Blues music while dabbling with peyote and later exploring with LSD. Civil Rights and the war in Vietnam were galvanizing factors in 1960s American society, but the advent of psychedelics made it electrified! This is how Austin became groovy. French Exit
PS, US CD ONLY release! When you leave without saying goodbye, it's called a "french exit." Suffice it to say, there has been an interesting cast of characters weaving in and out of the lives of the EOTW duo. Somehow, though, through 14 bass players & one fistfight, the 2 of them have been able to stick toge-ther as best friends & band mates. It's a rarity in a city like Brooklyn, where true friends can be hard to come by. W/ 11 songs of city stories, the band's 2nd full-length, addresses the growing pains of boys becoming men & transitioning into adulthood, or at least attempting to do so. Stefan's old school crooning underscores the earnestness in his lyrics. On stage, he is a captivating storyteller, reflecting on the ins & outs of his life, his loves & his friendships. Meanwhile, Benjamin chimes in w/ shimmery, yearning guitar strums. The sound is minimalist & stripped down, calling attention to each song's emotion & tone. Beginning with the subtle electronics of the symphonic opener, "An Umbrella Fallen Into Fiction," Envy thrashes and burns through a trio of thoughtful face-melters. Farr, Gary
Take Something With You
PS, US This double CD set marks the long-overdue first reissue of Gary Farr's classic 1969 solo debut, Take Something With You -- one of the best and rarest singer-songwriter albums to emerge from the UK underground. Having torn up innumerable R&B clubs with the T-Bones, by the late 1960s, Farr had gone in a more pastoral, progressive direction. A superb set of reflective, acid-tinged ballads, the album finds his soulful voice ably backed by his 12-string guitar and supporting musicians including members of Mighty Baby and Blossom Toes, as well as Meic Stevens. It's presented here together with a plethora of non-LP 45s and previously-unheard demos, as well as a booklet featuring rare photographs, historical liner notes and personal memoirs from Meic Stevens and Farr's long-term partner, Carinthia West.

Led by Les Emmerson, Five Man Electrical Band is today best known for their 1971 anti-establishment anthem 'Signs.' The Billboard # 3 single went on to sell over a million and a half copies. This first-ever CD issue of their long-out-of-print Capitol LP is supplemented by rare Staccatos 45s, none of which have ever been issued on CD. The 16-page color booklet also includes rare, unpublished photos and comprehensive liner notes that feature the participation of original band members. Remastered from the original master tapes.

Huntsville
Eco, Arches & Eras
PS, US 2nd album from this Norwegian trio, which is the follow-up to their highly-acclaimed 2006 release. In general, the HUNTSVILLE project contrasts sharply with their other collaborations/projects, & reveals a quite different, more groove-based approach w/ strong elements of composition & a curiosity to investigate country music, electronic music, as well as Feldman, Cage, drone & folk music. The 2nd CD is a recording from the concert they did w/ Nels Cline & Glenn Kotche (from Wilco) at the Kongsberg Jazz Festival in '07. The group's multi-instrumentalism means that this is no conventional guitar/bass/drums trio - but w/ all players indulging in idiosyncratic devices, it's almost impossible to know who's producing what hauntingly unusual or strangely beautiful sound.

Sharp songs, heavy on melody and big on guitar riffs. So big, that the folks behind Guitar Hero are including the Hushpuppies track "You're Gonna Say Yeah" on the upcoming "Guitrar Hero World Tour". "Hushpuppies are a stylish garage rock band who have listened a lot to The Who, drink a lot of vodka, and drive their scooter up the wall" - Spex.

Hyvonen, Frida
Silence Is Wild
PS, US Having come out of a year of isolation, Frida Hyvönen paired up once again with Swedish producer Jari Haapalainen in Stockholm's famous Atlantis studio and made her second full-length Silence Is Wild. Whereas Hyvönen's 2006 debut Until Death Comes was lean and percussive with her distinctive oompah-styled piano and direct lyrics, Silence Is Wild stretches her voice across lush arrangements of piano, strings, choirs, and synths. Piano-based antecedents and contemporaries such as Carole King, Jerry Lee Lewis, Plush, and Antony and the Johnsons generally feel like appropriate touchstones for discussing the Swedish singer-songwriter's recorded work. Lyrically, however, Hyvönen is in more open waters, as she forges her own stylistic path as a songwriter. On Silence is Wild, Hyvönen continues to take an utterly modern approach to classic songwriting forms: blending the confessional with the fictional; mixing wit with a sexuality that shifts from the refined to the raw; all the while using language which dances effortlessly between the timeless and the contemporary, referencing high art and pop culture in a transcendent manner which masterfully puts Hyvönen at the top of a new international class of singer-songwriters.

I AM Robot And Proud
Grace Days
PS, US Reissue. Based in Toronto, I Am Robot And Proud is the name Shaw-Han Liem works under to create his singular brand of hypnotic, beguiling electronic pop music. Grace Days is the full-length follow-up to his 2000 debut album The Catch. Following the initial burst of color and texture that The Catch offered, Grace Days amplifies and extends it, allowing form and structure to be abstracted, as on tracks like 'Mexico City' and 'Friction On Teeth', with fantastic results. Shaw-Han also manages to invest an even more depth and emotion to the melodies than before. The beautiful delicate harmonies on 'Her Version' lull you into a warm, inviting trance, and the title-track opener brings together acoustics and electronics in a way that would make you reconsider how the two styles could ever have been divorced from each other for so long. At nine tracks, Grace Days is a compact, perfectly formed fabergé-egg of a record. A sweet, fragile, opulent work that will subtly draw you in, making you wonder how you lived without I Am Robot And Proud before.

It's A Musical
Music Makes Me Sick
PS, US Debut full-length release by Swedish/German duo, IT'S A MUSICAL (feat. ex-members of BOBBY BABY & LADY BOY). Bedroom pop songs w/ literally 4 hands on a keyboard, & two jubilant voices. These are voices that share equal space w/ each other, intertwining in stunning pop harmony, sung in English. "Lazy" begins as a melancholy piano miniature that expands into a grand, sweeping Burt Bacharach serenade. "Circus" feat. a waltzing organ & brass confidently bumps against a marching percussion in "Pain." So, what's this music about? Happy things, bad things, like The Carpenters or Jens Lekman - rough & subtle, virtuoso & amateurish, mischievous & angelic. Sincere, upbeat pop about having no money & having trouble making art.

Jackson, Luke
...And Then Some
PS, CANADA London-born Luke Jackson¹s third album ...And Then Some was recorded at the all-analogue Aerosol Grey Machine studio in Southern Sweden with producer Christoffer Lundquist (Roxette, Cardigans, Concretes etc), drummer Jens Jansson (Per Gessle, Brainpool) and bassist Magnus Börjeson (Beagle, Favorita, Cardigans). The strings were arranged by Londoner Robert Kirby (Nick Drake, Elvis Costello, John Cale etc) and were performed by nine players from Malmö's Opera Orchestra. It is the collision of Swedish pop sensibilities and the distinctive eloquence of Robert Kirby's arrangements, which makes ...And Then Some so compelling. Densely layered guitars and vocal harmonies fuse with sweeping string lines, none of which ever draw the ear too far from what lies at the heart of Luke's music... gorgeous, expressive, unpretentious songs born of the trials and tribulations of a life lived to the fullest.

K-The-I???
Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow
PS, US K-THE-I??? marks a thunderous return to MUSH with his latest full-length, "Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow". Production on the album is handled entirely by THAVIUS BECK, his first project since he finished work on Saul Willaims' "Niggy Tardust" alongside Trent Reznor. Where his debut, "Broken Love Letter", focused on past loves gone wrong, "Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow" is a collection of songs about the MC's cross country relocation, and trying to come to terms with how his life has changed from that. The result is a work of singular focus that catches K-The-I??? at his strongest, dropping ingenious lyrics over Blade Runner beats. The album features a stellar line-up of guest MCs as High Priest of a newly reunited Antipop Consortium, Busdriver, Subtitle, Scribble Jam winner Nocando, Vyle, and Mestizo all drop in. Thavius Beck even leaves the producer's desk and steps in front of the mic for a track. Legends, The
Seconds Away
PS, US After two years of absence The Legends return with the noisiest pop single to ever come out of Sweden. "Seconds away" balances perfectly between the unbearable and pure loveliness. "I need noise now, so this new single sounds like someone drilling a whole in your head. In a pleasant way that is. It's called "Seconds away" and is about the wonders of Tryptizol. The B-side, "Over and over" is actually one of those sad love songs I had promised myself never to write again. But it was out of my hands; life forced me to write it. Sorry about that... Pallers has done a truly wonderful remix of it. It might actually beat the original, which is both a very good thing and slightly depressing at the same time." Johan [aka The Legends]. The one-man band The Legends has confused, and annoyed, it's surroundings with a total lack of will to compromise and sudden changes in musical direction since 2003. Right now Johan is in the famous Summersound studios together with a large number of distortion pedals and broken amplifiers to record a fourth The Legends album. The Legends made their debut with the critically acclaimed album "Up against the Legends" in the fall of 2003. Live the band was somewhere between 8-10 people of which two had a slight idea about how to play their instrument and none was close to sober. -" I wanted to make pop melodies so simple and obvious that they could get to the audience no matter how the songs were played. This time the audience will, hopefully, rather fight to hear the melodies through a wall of feedback".

Lucksmiths, The
First Frost
PS, US Over the course of fifteen years and almost as many albums and international tours, Australian band The Lucksmiths have penned some of the most adored songs this side of the pop underground and have built up a massive fanbase of both Europeans and ex-pats in the process. Their last album Warmer Corners, received much praise (Pitchfork : idiosyncratic but accessible, literate but unpretentious, gentle but not weak, sincere not so much in presentation as in presence) Loud & Quiet named it their 2nd favourite album of the year, Two singles lifted from the album A Hiccup in Your Happiness and The Chapter in Your Life Entitled San Francisco both received heavy rotation on the nations broadcasters, the latter also finding its way onto Qantas in-flight playlist for March 2006 an achievement not celebrated lightly by a band with an enduring penchant for the somewhat ridiculous and irrelevant. A trip to Tasmania has yielded First Frost Their finest and most eclectic album to date. Camped out in the wilderness, the band was free to explore and expand the musical palette, and with all 4 members contributing songs, the end result is a 14-song offering bound to surprise anyone who thought they had The Lucksmiths pegged as sounding too much like The Lucksmiths

Magic Lantern
S-T
PS, US Magic Lantern came into being at the mid-point of the decade, sparked into existence by a simultaneous period of musical discovery for Philip French, William Giacchi, and Cameron Stallones. Inspired by the psychedelic approach to musical tone and structure in various eras and genres of rock (not at all excluding Germany and Japan in the '70s), the three realized they ought to make use of the new creative tools they'd stumbled upon, and began jamming the summer away in twin poles of Long Beach and Whittier, CA. Over the course of a year, they recorded every jam and compiled a full-length's worth of home-studio demos which later became their self-released CD-R. At the same time, each member was developing solo and side projects to channel parallel universes of sound. A year after their first jam together, Magic Lantern decided to make the leap to playing live and recruited good friends and like-minded musicians Chip Knechtel and Gavin Fort to be their marathon rhythm section. The jams from their CD-R were used as the blueprints for the band to develop a raw, stripped-down sound that emphasized hypnotic rhythms and improvised guitar duels. After being invited to play at the Tee Pee Records showcase 'Manifest Destiny' in August of '07, th' Lantern kept up a steady diet of shows in L.A. and Long Beach for the next year, earning a local following and two highly limited tapes on Not Not Fun Records. Through the spring of '08, they began writing new material as a band and developing the new songs live. In the summer, they recorded these jams with sound wizard Bobb Bruno, which led to the Not Not Fun LP High Beams that September. At this point, the band had fully emerged from transition into a shared creative vision of five musicians, each possessing a singular voice, all united in the common goal to engage both mind and body through good vibrations. Edition of 500 on black vinyl.

Mahjongg
Free Groove Rider
PS, US Stylistically, MAHJONGG is boundless and indefinable. From their very first EP through K's "Kontpab" (released earlier this year), Mahjongg have dabbled in beatbox punk, afro-beat revivalism and junkyard whimsy. The continual shifts in their albums is an earnest attempt to realize global harmonies, but if given only one side of a 7" which side of Mahjongg would come out to play? The Dub Narcotic Disco Plate series provides the answer and "Free Groove Rider" is their most refracted pop statement yet. Using a swirling vocoder and intermittent dance beats, this single flickers like a channel-surfer finding pop sensibilities in between the static. The B-side, a remix by Selector Dub Narcotic (Calvin Johnson), ups the playfulness by reducing the static in favor of an unkempt, bubbling mix of melodica and reemerging synths.

Mascott
Art Project
PS, US A musician's life in New York City can be difficult. It's an expensive town that makes it nearly impossible to work solely as a working musician, so instead you set the alarm every morning and head to your day job in midtown. For Kendall Jane Meade of Mascott, that job reaped unintended benefits. With the freedom of a steady paycheck, she was able to indulge in her favorite job, one that has sustained her (and her fans) for years: an artist. The result is the aptly named Art Project, a gorgeous collection of songs that showcase an artist unhindered by expectations, pressure or obligation...an artist writing and singing for no one but herself. The result is an indie-pop stunner: intimate, relaxed and beautiful. As a result, Art Project is Kendall's personal journal of sorts, rumination on modern city life, the ebb and flow of love, and tender poignancy of the small moments in between.

Meyer, Bob
Threefold Return
PS, UK Bridging the great divide from South London to the Deep South, Bob Meyer is one of those individuals who, while showing no desire to crave the spotlight, assimilate and homage's his influences to emerge with statements of unadorned and unrelenting honesty. Sounding like they could be recorded in your front room, the songs on his second album, Threefold Return, intimately straddle anyone from Nick Drake to Blind Willie Johnson but what shines through is the man's honest and restless, questing musical passion. Bob's also a shit-hot guitar player, first picking up the instrument at the age of ten courtesy of his older brother, who built them. Maybe put off by his own left-handedness, Bob didn't touch a guitar again until the age of 31when he did a Hendrix by turning the instrument upside down along with his teach yourself handbook. Within a month he was writing songs, later recording his 2006 debut album All This Is That in one afternoon at the Chocolate Box in Wood Green - all tracks first takes with no overdubs. AmericanaUK described the album as, "Primordial blues, tough and dirty, that harks back to Robert Johnson's template and at times comes close to being as powerful. Meyer has a real feel for the music and delivers real blues in a classic style." Guardian Unlimited called Bob, "an extraordinarily talented acoustic blues guitarist, a man who sings like his heart is buried in a Mississippi swamps". Although the album didn't catapult him into a position to give up his day job as a truck-driver it paved the way for a second outing which throws out an uncanny timeline with America's 60s troubadours lashed with the stark guitar styling of the blues musicians he reveres, particularly Blind Gary Davies, Leadbelly and Son House. This blues fixation surfaces on tracks like Tilt and the stridently atmospheric I'm A Fool. Southwark Bridge recalls the drowsy observations of Nick Drake while As She Flows and When I'm Gone recall Greenwich Village singer-songwriters like the Tim Rose and Hardin. The most enthralling excursions are instrumentals like Rollin' Part 3 and stunning Fast River Of No Return which recall nobody so much as the late John Fahey, the mysterious American genius who revolutionized the six string steel guitar in the early 60s, inspiring names like Leo Kottke and Robbie Basho to develop their own individual styles.

Momus
Joemus
PS, US The new Momus album, Joemus, is collaboration between the veteran electronic vaudevillian and Joe Howe, a young Glasgow breakcore musician known for his work with Gay Against You and Germlin. Asked, back in 2007, to do a cover version for a limited edition box set called Recovery, Momus called on the young Scot's services to make a cover of David Bowie's Ashes to Ashes, which turned out "not so much a pop song as a ping pong match between Coco the Clown and Major Tom... a series of satisfying thwack and plock and boiiiiiing noises," according to Momus. The Bowie cover isn't on Joemus, but the Nintendo Glam Rock feel -- and the odd noises -- persist. The pair worked over the Internet, then spent several weeks together in Berlin fine-tuning the results. The Joemus album sounds like the hits of 70s Scottish glam rock sensations The Bay City Rollers played on 80s amusement arcade equipment. Joe's frenetic, ADD-addled jams get turned by Momus into folk jigs, but the fast numbers alternate with tenderly morose slowies, covers of Cliff Richard ballads and Ryuichi Sakamoto croons. Then it's back to the beats-and-edits frenzy, and tales of horror, from Dracula (a duet with Groopie Kyoka Kyoka) to Ichabod Crane. The result may be the most satisfying pop album Momus has ever made -- but only if your definition of pop tends to the edgy, jumpy, fresh, and weird.

Monsere, Annelies
Somewhere Someone
PS, BELGIUM Limited to 185. All copies hand-numbered, hand-stamped and have handwritten liner notes by Annelies. "Somewhere someone" consists of 6 previously unreleased songs. Five out of six are brand new and written right after recording "marit" - Annelies' second yet to be released full length. One was written a long time ago for her band Zent One, but, completely reworked for this release. She recorded these songs over a short period of time in 2008 on an eight track cassette recorder at home. This EP features a Hammond organ for the first time. This instrument led to new approaches in songwriting. This release deviates clearly from previous releases, with a darker and harsher sound. Lyrically, these songs all touch the theme of absence, though this was not a conscious starting point. About Annelies Monseré: Annelies Monseré is a multi-instrumentalist from Gent, Belgium. Her debut record came out in 2005 on Bluesanct records. During a four-year stay in the Netherlands, she toured Europe and the US and played on festivals like Tanned Tin and Primaverasound, leading to high expectations for her second record, due for release later. Music Lovers, The
MasculineFeminine
PS, US 'Masculine Feminine' is the third long-playing record from acclaimed San Francisco-based pop-sophisticates The Music Lovers and the pinnacle of their artistic endeavors. The Music Lovers are led by transplanted Englishman songwriter Matthew Edwards. Edwards refers to 'Masculine Feminine' as his own personal 'Day of the Locust', a travelogue through the underbelly of the almost-famous doyens of LA and San Francisco. Like a toxic Graham Greene on a tear, Edwards speaks of motels, love-affairs, addictions, vamps and ingénues, pausing on occasion to look back on a half remembered England and wonder what went wrong (or right)? These are desperate songs born of need and frustration, but never dreary, never self-pitying. Rather, they show a formidable spirit of abandon - an abandon to the pop aesthetic; saddling the darkest sensibilities and wickedest proclivities to the sweetest pop-song frame-works. The music? The girl-group sound on a dreary Tuesday morning in 1976... quietly exultant on a radio in Birmingham. Serge and Stax and The Go-Betweens and Dusty and Lerner and Lowe, dammit! If David Goodis had written lyrics for Carole King they might have sounded a little like this record. Yes, they are all 'love songs' but not only to people, but places, states of mind and to divine release. 'Masculine Feminine' is battered, inebriate, sensual and defiantly and unfashionably romantic! Praise for The Music Lovers: "Gin-spritzed string arrangements and cocktail-bar melancholy, [that comes] off like a Rat Pack version of Lloyd Cole." - WORD "Hints of '60s AM-radio fodder regularly poke through the creamy, dreamy layers of piano, acoustic guitar, concertina, strings and mellotron, and the results are seductive." - MAGNET "The Music Lovers sound is lush and voluptuous, making me think of clouds and rain, strings and guitars, both orchestral and earthy, akin to the sublime pleasure of holding your head in my lap, oh my beautiful one." - comedian MARGARET CHO

Nerves, The
One Way Ticket
PS, US "Their bare, skeletal sound made every lick seem memorable. They excelled in energy.
People compared them to the early Beatles or the Dave Clark Five." - Kenneth Funsten.
Formed in 1975 by guitarist JACK LEE, bassist PETER CASE, and drummer PAUL COLLINS, the Nerves are one of the most influential garage/punk pop outfits to come out of the mid-70's LA scene, and certainly one of the least documented... until now. Mostly remembered for their classic "Hanging On The Telephone," a Jack Lee composition which has been covered over the years by a myriad of artists from BLONDIE to L7 to CAT POWER, the Nerves were above all a high energy rock'n'roll band with all three members composing and singing. Playing fast, ear-catching garage pop songs, sometimes wearing matching suits, the trio had more than a bit of the stripped down street energy of the Los Angeles's early punk movement. They shared the stage with the Ramones and Mink Deville during their infamous US "Magical Blistering Tour," played the Punk Palace and the legendary Masque in Hollywood, and headlined shows with the Avengers, the Zeros, The Dils, The Screamers and Shock, to name just a few. After the band's break-up in 1978, Peter Case and Paul Collins formed The BREAKAWAYS, and later went on to front the legendary PLIMSOULS and The BEAT, respectively. Following the success of "Hanging On the Telephone," JACK LEE has mostly focused on his songwriting career, releasing an album in 1981. Both Peter and Paul are still recording and touring. PETER CASE's latest album "Let Us Now Praise Sleepy John" (Yeproc 2007) was nominated for a Grammy. This collection, authorized for the first time ever by the three band members, features the band's 1976 EP (now regarded as a power pop classic), as well as demos and previously unreleased live recordings, REMASTERED and complete with notes and photos. The CD is a Digipack. Track listing : 1. One Way Ticket 2. Paper Dolls 3. Hanging On The Telephone 4. When You Find Out 5. Working Too Hard 6. Give Me Some Time 7. Walking Out On Love (Breakaways) 8. PS, US Digitally remastered and expanded two CD edition of this 1983 album, includes eight non-album singles, B-sides and remixes. New Order found its voice on the group's sophomore effort, POWER, CORRUPTION & LIES (1983). Featuring the original eight songs on the British release, the first disc offers exceptional dance-pop with "Your Silent Face" and "Age Of Consent." The bonus disc includes "Blue Monday" and its b-side "The Beach," which were released exclusively as a single in the U.K., but included on the U.S. version of Power, Corruption & Lies. The single became the best-selling, independently released 12" single of all time in the U.K. Also similarly re-issued: Movement, Low-Life, Brotherhood and Technique.

Technique [expanded re-issue] (ON SALE)
PS, US Digitally remastered and expanded two CD edition of this 1989 album from the Manchester quartet, one of the most successful and consistent bands of the '80s and beyond. After the suicide of vocalist, Ian Curtis, the three surviving members of Joy Division regrouped under the band name New Order, adding Gillian Gilbert on keyboards. The rest, as they say, is history. Disc One in this package contains the original album in its digitally remastered glory. Disc Two is filled with nine non-album singles, B-sides and remixes. Also similarly re-issued: Movement, Power Corruption & Lies, Low-Life, and Brotherhood.

New Order
Movement [expanded re-issue] (ON SALE)
PS, US Digitally remastered and expanded two CD edition of this 1981 album, includes 10 non-album singles, B-sides and remixes, including their debut singles/EP. After the tragic suicide of Joy Division's Ian Curtis, the band restructured. Guitarist Bernard Sumner, whose gift for combining the melodic with the hypnotic had been the band's cornerstone, stepped up to the microphone. The resulting debut MOVEMENT finds the group taking a brave step away from its unfortunate past. Preserved are Joy Division's dark edges--Sumner's guitar attack swerves deftly between funereal repetition and noisy bursts, while bassist Peter Hook continues to explore his instrument's upper registers. From the slow, deliberate build and melodic interplay of its opening moment, the mid-tempo "Dreams never End", MOVEMENT boldly states the band's more experimental, slightly less emotionally turgid agenda. That Sumner is trapped under the influence of Curtis is undeniable--at times, the resemblance is alarming, but MOVEMENT is the sound of Sumner finding his voice. The spacey synth-pop of "The Him" foreshadows the sound New Order was to slowly develop, as Sumner became more comfortable with the upper reaches of his vocal range. Dynamic play abounds--the existentialist drone of "Truth" gives way to a crushing, chaotic guitar wail, while the intense, revealingly named "Doubts Even Here" slowly erupts beneath a disturbing double-vocal, stressing the burgeoning diversity of this legendary band in the making. Also similarly re-issued: Power Corruption & Lies, Low-Life, Brotherhood and Technique.

New Order
Low Life [expanded re-issue] (ON SALE)
PS, US Digitally remastered and expanded two CD edition of this 1985 album, includes eight non-album singles, B-sides and remixes. With LOW-LIFE, New Order truly hit their stride with their highly individual combination of infectious rhythms, inventive composition and performances full of conviction. The vulnerable lyrics and earnest delivery of Bernard Sumner are in top form; his voice is at last a completely developed instrument, clear and comfortable as it wraps itself around such memorable tracks as the opening "Love Vigilantes", a solid, purely guitar-driven narrative. Following immediately and in sharp contrast is LOW LIFE's biggest success, "The Perfect Kiss", a sequencer-fueled dance classic which boasts what is undoubtedly pop music's only frog sample solo. "Sunrise" has an epic feel, filled with driving leads and Sumner's signature scratchy, frenetic rhythm playing. The album takes a serene turn on "Elegia", a beautiful, airy composition of echoey guitar lines and swirling synth textures. Also similarly re-issued: Movement, Power Corruption & Lies, Brotherhood and Technique.

New Order
Brotherhood [expanded re-issue] (ON SALE)
PS, US Digitally remastered and expanded two CD edition of this 1986 album, includes eight non-album singles, B-sides and remixes. BROTHERHOOD is a document of growth for New Order's ever-expanding sonic landscape. Packaged in the stark, utilitarian style that was the Factory label's trademark, the album belies its minimalist presentation with a sprawling, intricately crafted collection of pop gems, inspiringly diverse, yet uniformly infused with the band's trademark sincerity and off-kilter melodic sense. The album opens with the deceptively straight drum hits of "Paradise", which quickly adopts an intense double-tracked vocal and with it, an air of danger that offsets its soaring melody. New Order developed into masters of intellectually stimulating dance music, an elusive combination of qualities. The album's biggest hit "Bizarre Love Triangle" exemplifies this rare mixture--atop a throbbing, heavily sequenced dance beat is played out a drama complete with consistently engaging musical shifts, dramatic lyrical turns, and a chorus that's instantly memorable and nothing short of gorgeous. The wistful vulnerability of "All Day Long" dissolves into a sprawling, regal affair and the supremely sweet "Every Little Counts" show yet another dimension to New Order's sonic richness.

Nomi, Klaus
Za Bakdaz: The Unfinished Opera
PS, US Klaus Nomi's Unfinished Symphony, or Operetta, or "Space Western". It was also a song from his show, and it's the title of this new release. Loosely translated, it means Heaven, or "Homeland for Nomis". He left behind recordings, photos, and a few videos-but if you had never been in the same room with him... you will never know. A performer of startling vocal ability and even more striking visage, Klaus Nomi had no peer-and due to his untimely departure, the world will never know how he might have applied those talents. When he left Earth on August 6th, 1983, Klaus Nomi took with him the resolution to his Magnum Opus-a work we had always assumed would be titled Za Bakdaz, or "Nomi Homeland". We have decided now, a quarter century later, to present it. What we were not able to do was finish it exactly as he might have; the result is in equal parts collaboration, a tribute, an historical artifact, and a mystery. The parts are sung in several languages-English, German, French, Italian-and interestingly, his own personal "Nomi Language", which we like to call "the Glossolalia". For that reason the libretto could be open to interpretation. In this incomplete state we are left with a musical Rorschach-possibly not what Nomi fans would expect-but still true to both his classical operatic roots and his fascination with all things experimental and futuristic.

Norma
Book of Norma
PS, US Swedish shoegaze/dreamrock duo Norma's new album is available 11/4. Those of you who snapped up their incredible debut EP (available again, very limited stock) understand what's at stake here. Norma's music is a mixture of ambient, kraut, noise, electronica, indie often with a strict, repetitive bass/drum pattern and a magnificent, wide and almost hypnotic sound. This is rich, panoramic music with a warmth that you don't hear often from other bands trying to do something in this genre. German kraut is one obvious thing, but also the spacerock of Spiritualized and Spacemen3 comes to mind. Modern references may be Silverbullit, 120 Days, Serena Maneesh and the Lionheart Brothers.

Northern Valentine
The Distance Brings Us Closer
PS, US Northern Valentine is built around husband & wife team Robert (guitar) & Amy Brown (violin & keyboards). They have been recording since 1997 & have six limited release albums to their credit in numerous incarnations with various additional musicians. On The Distance Brings Us Closer Robert & Amy are joined by Jeffrey Bumiller (of Doctor Scientist & Lunch with Beardo) on guitar, Marc Carazo on bass guitar, & Ben Fleury- Steiner (of Light of Shipwreck & owner of Gears of Sand Records) on guitar. The recordings on the Distance Brings Us Closer were live in their studio using a stereo field recorder without post-production or overdubbing, just the band members improvising off of each other on planned themes. The result is a very live & blended spacious sound rather than the sterility & separation that can often be found on a multi-tracked album version of a live improvisational drone band.

Orsi, Fabio
Audio for Lovers
PS, US 2xCD effort that is at once a highly satisfying 2 hour entry in the ambient genre. Parks, Cale
Sparklace
PS, US A little over a year since the release of Aloha and White Williams drummer Cale Parks' solo debut album Illuminated Manuscript comes Sparklace. There is a stark contrast between the two albums. Sparklace stands as a more immediate album than its predecessor focusing on songs with a pop structure whereas Parks' previous output was more ambient and minimalisitc. Recorded in his home, every sound is original. If there is a drum sample, it is from Parks' drum set. The vibraphone is
sampled as well. To say Parks has found his voice, is to miss the point. Rather, the sound of Sparklace is singular and electronic with born digital sounds. There is no wasted space, not a snare out of place. Listen carefully as it settles in, fragile but not
without momentum.

Plagenhoef, Scott and Ryan Schreiber
The Pitchfork 500: Our Guide to the Greatest Songs from Punk to the Present
PS, US The Pitchfork 500: Our Guide to the Greatest Songs from Punk to the Present, by Scott Plagenhoef and Ryan Schreiber. Pitchfork offers up their take on the 500 best songs of the past three decades. Focusing on indie rock (Arcade Fire, The Shins), hip hop (Public Enemy, Jay-Z), electronic (Daft Punk, Boards of Canada), pop (Madonna, Justin Timberlake), metal (Metallica, Boris), and experimental underground music (Suicide, Boredoms), it features all-new essays and reviews written with the sharp wit and insight for which the site is known. Kicking it off in 1977 with the birth of punk and independent music, The Pitchfork 500 runs chronologically, with each chapter representing a distinct period and offering a narrative of how the musical landscape of the day influenced its artists. The book opens with David Bowie, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Kraftwerk, and Brian Eno, the "art-rock godfathers" who set the tone and tenor for the next thirty years, and wraps up in the present, when bands connect with new audiences through social networking sites and prime-time TV placements -- and when a single mp3 can turn a niche indie artist into a global sensation. Sidebars like "Yacht Rock," "Runaway Trainwrecks," "Nanofads," and "Career Killers" call out some far-from-classic musical trends and identify the guiltiest offenders. Softcover, 224 pages.

Pleasant Dreams
Podría Ser Hoy
PS, SPAIN Despite being young, Spanish band PLEASANT DREAMS have been working towards their debut album for several years. Honing their songs and playing sporadic word of mouth gigs they sent out demo after demo before a chance encounter between the band and Green Ufos on MySpace convinced the label that they had discovered one of the Spanish music scene's brightest hopes for the future. Led by Juanjo Clausell, the band plays a gorgeous style of pop influenced by bands like Belle & Sebastian, The Ladybug Transistor, Norkfolk & Western, and Bright Eyes. Singing in their native language, they are being favorably compared in the press to influential and leading artists in the Spanish scene including Family, La Buena Vida, Lori Meyers, Nacho Vegas or Refree. The songs by PLEASANT DREAMS are full of arrangements (cellos, violins, violas, trumpets,...) but they are essentially catchy pop gems that immediately lodge themselves in your head. Some of the songs are positive and "up" whilst others reflect the difficulties of being a young pop lover fighting against the tide of this modern society with its uniform music, dress, clubs, etc. Despite being a debut album, it has great maturity and all the songs are truly memorable. Only one remains from the original demos that the label heard, all the rest being new material specially written for the album. Produced by Spanish production guru Paco Loco, the artwork of the album is by Vanesa Zafra, who has also worked for the Lori Meyers. The album comes in an attractive digipack.

Reinhardt, Jonas
S-T
PS, US Drawing from traditions of 20th century instrumental synthesizer music, Jonas Reinhardt represents a love affair between analog electronics, sweeping atmospherics & driving motorik beats. Combined together, these elements bring the album's 13 pieces into focus as the soundtrack for an inner-eyelid space epic that never was. Armed with a battery of analog synthesizers & vintage drum machines, Jonas writes music that is at times stark & spare and at others lush & all-encompassing; all the while keeping an underlying rhythmic pulse just beneath the surface.

This puts forward a fantastic cluster of dimension & depth to an overpopulated world of disposable, faceless music that exists in minimal techno currently. Shop Assistants
Will Anything Happen
PS, UK The Shop Assistants were one of the defining bands of the '80s independent boom. Formed in Edinburgh in 1984, originally as Buba & The Shop Assistants, they released the Peel-approved indie staple Something To Do , which featured Stephen Pastel on backing vocals. With line-up changes and an abbreviated name, they released the Shopping Parade EP a year later, which saw Morrissey describe 'All Day Long' (included on this collection) as his favorite track of the year. The band's David Keegan (who would subsequently join the Pastels) then formed 53rd & 3rd Records, which housed the band's 'Safety Net,' one of two songs, along with 'I Don't Want To Be Friends With You' (again, included here) to be voted part of John Peel's Festive Fifty of 1986. They also featured on that year's celebrated, infamous, nay, iconic C86 NME compilation. This re-release incorporates the material they released after signing to Chrysalis' Blue Guitar subsidiary. The Shop Assistants, aka Will Anything Happen, is their sole album release, and is accompanied here by two bonus tracks; 'Looking Back' and the slow version of 'All Day Long.' Although reissued in 2001, it has long been out-of-print, fetching scary prices on a well known auction site in acknowledgement of its status as one of the indispensable articles of the C86/shambling/independent scene.

Money
PS, US Already up so early in the morning of 2008, SKELETONS were hibernating in the safest, quietest, warmest place in the world: Times Square, New York. Taking breaks at 5am, standing under heat lamps listening to Hot Jazz outside the Time Warp Hotel, soaking up the empty streets with the leftover creeps while the tourists sleep. It's just the same struggle any old human has to go through to make anything: make it to work on time, make an excuse, make babies, make war, make breakfast without getting into a fight. Soccer Committee & Machinefabriek
Draw
PS, BELGIUM Machinefabriek has joined forces with Soccer Committee's Mariska Baars on a multitude of previous albums and EPs, but nothing has come close to the sheer force of "Drawn." Baars' bare-bones songs of lament and longing are taken apart and reassembled by Zuydervelt's capable hands. The result is stunning. "Drawn" skirts the line between fractured folk music and drone, never settling into one facade. Through Zuydervelt's production work, "Drawn" sounds like a dusty, unearthed gem found tucked away in the darkest reaches of an abandoned basement. This is music that is timeless. Gentle acoustic guitar plucks and soothing harmonium tones work magically to highlight the brightest star on the album: Baars' fragile, beautiful voice. She is in magnificent form, pulling emotions from the depths. Not to be overlooked are the flickering samples of Franz Hautzinger's mournful trumpet. This is music for the ages. Baars & Zuydervelt have made a magnificent album that will leave its mark and haunt you long after it ends. It really doesn't get much better. About Soccer Committee: Soccer Committee likes the act of endlessly zooming in on a particular sound and to follow its path to the point where it becomes totally inaudible. Her debut album 'sC' came out out morc in may 2007. About Machinefabriek: Machinefabriek makes electronic (nonlaptop) music ranging from drones to melodica songs and from classical ambient to harsh feedback noise. Rutger was called one of the most interesting new experimental musicians by the Wire magazine and with 60+ releases in just a few years, is definitely one of the most prolific ones.

Southern Arts Society
Burning Sound
PS, SPAIN After a bedroom produced debut album released in 2005, SOUTHERN ARTS SOCIETY, the project of ex A Popular History of Signs leader Andy Jarman, has gradually developed into a stable band with four established members. This maturing process has been a key element in creating an organic sound which has led to what is undoubtedly the best album in a personal musical adventure going back over two decades. Apart from the fact that the album includes guest vocals by Gary Olson from The Ladybug Transistor, Roger Quigley from The Montgolfier Brothers / At Swim Two Birds, and French chanteuse Françoiz Breut, it is quite simply a superb collection of songs. Tindersticks, the Go Betweens, Wilco, Deus, Nick Cave, Divine Comedy, Calexico, Lee Hazlewood & Nancy Sinatra... All these names could be traced in the music of this Londoner based in Seville (Spain) and his band. The album has a cool stylish sound, mixing guitars, piano, and strings with hints of electronica. There are flashes of intensity that explode in songs such as Satellites and Shooting Stars which features Spanish production guru Paco Loco on typically untamed guitar. The songs unfold with one hit following another. Just the demo version of opener "The Window" has been played repeatedly on Spanish national radio. Andy has never sung better whilst the rich tones of Roger Quigley captivate the listener on "Religion", which is immediately followed by the atmospheric trumpet arrangements of Passing Through. "The Fall" features the wonderfully evocative voice of reclusive Spanish singer Muni from The Maddening Flames. Another highlight in the middle of the album is French chanteuse Françoiz Breut singing Landlocked Sailor, a story of mariners from the bankrupt Russian fishing fleets who are marooned in the Canary Islands. Next comes the powerful of "Satellites and Shooting Stars", followed by the immediately catchy groove of "This Town". Finally, to close the album, the majestic baritone of The Ladybug Transistor frontman Gary Olson singing "Day in September". Then it's back to the beginning to play the album once more, because you'll need to listen to these fantastic songs time and time again. The cover of "Burning Sand" is inspired by the Republican propaganda posters from the Spanish Civil War, and reflects Andy's fascination with this tragic but emotive time in our history.

Messthetics Greatest HISS: Classics Of U.K Cassette Culture D.I.Y.: 1979-1982 (Volume 1)
PS, US An introduction to the D.I.Y. cassette scene 1979-84. The U.K.'s original cassette-scene hosted some of the most inept shambling in the history of recorded music, but there was no shortage of musical genius, either (be that accidental or otherwise). From endless bedrooms filled with home-made gadgets, Woolworths guitars, Casios and soldering fumes, came sounds both stunningly simple and sophisticated -- and vastly more varied than anything on vinyl. These artists seldom made more than 100 copies of their cassettes and typically circulated them for free, with untold thousands of tapes changing hands through the Royal Post. Messthetics' new series samples the more, er, musical sides of the scene (lots of cool electronics, but no 'ambient' or 'industrial' -- and everything's under 5 minutes!): Here is D.I.Y. at its most liberated. Twenty-five tracks on the CD plus five bonus MP3s. 90+ minutes of music. 24-page booklet, crammed with histories, photos, artifacts and an essay from Mick Sinclair, who wrote the original 'Cassette Pets' column for Sounds. Messthetics Greatest Hiss features the superstars of cassette culture and plenty of others: The Jelly Babies, Danny & the Dressmakers, Storm Bugs, Colin Potter, Event Group, The Get, Instant Automatons, Missing Persons, Gravity Craze, Farming Jim & his Hepcat Groovstas, 391, The Chromosomes, Mike Jones, The Living Dead no. 5, Digital Dinosaurs, The Twizlers, Aconite, Casual Labourers (Bendle and other DIY heavies), Midnight Circus, Milkshake Melon, Funhouse, Cultural Amnesia, Stripey Zebras, Chimp Eats Bananas (pre-Chumbawamba!) and Dean Johnson.

Buddhism remains of primary importance in Tibet & chants of song & prayer are heard throughout the plateau. This ornamental carnival of sound was recorded by Zhang Jian (of the Beijing-based sound collective 'fm3') on the streets of Lhasa, ZhaDa & Shigatse in August 2003. Liner notes written by Steve Barker (ON THE WIRE/BBC).

She's A Heartbreaker: 20 Blue Eyed Soul Stings UK Floor Fillers Vol. 4
PS, UK Welcome, dear listener, to a world of arrows, targets and multiple rearview mirrors. Racing on big sister's slimming pills and having spent more than is advisable on tight-fitting mohair suits, sharp hairstyling and two-wheel Italian transport, how can a poor suburban soul-boy kick back and relax? And "relax," in this context, does not mean sitting comatose in an armchair. It means forgetting about the office dress code, the factory clocking in and out machine, and the looks of disapproval as you swan down Wardour Street. Here's how: cerebrally ingest the sounds on this CD and move yourself accordingly. The UK and European soul treatments are sure to satisfy any rhythmic cravings. You'll hear an old South London mate of David Bowie, a sweet Irish colleen getting very groovy, one of Sweden's coolest combos, a great South African soulstress, Nottingham's top soul band, Madeleine Bell working under a pseudonym and lots more. So as the Wicked Pickett once advised; don't fight it. Compiled by legendary psych musician and Psychic Circle label-head, Nick Saloman (The Bevis Frond). Artists include: Dave Hunter, Tina Harvey, Kris Ife, Jon Kane, Johnny Curtis, The Globe Show, Margo, James Royal, Slam Creepers, Al Torino, Una Valli, Johnny Tame, Joe E. Young & The Toniks, The Amboy Dukes, The Underground, Kevin "King" Lear, Currant Kraze, Ronnie Jones, The New Jump Band, and Kenny Bernard.

The Golden Road: The Electric Coffee House Vol. 2 Further Travels Into Unexplored U.S. Folk Rock Territories
PS, UK A little while back, the Psychic Circle label took a journey back to the time when American folk music discovered electric rock and pop. The result was The Electric Coffee House compilation. That turned out to be one of the label's most successful albums, so consequently they've been having another delve into that hallowed region of chiming guitars, righteous harmony and garage joy. Once again, Psychic Circle is delighted to present an intriguing selection of obscurities: some primitive, some sophisticated, some psychedelic, some full of pop sensibility, but all of it with an essential, omnipresent undercurrent of folk tradition, albeit filtered through amplifiers and pick-ups, but there nonetheless. You'll hear from Ian Whitcomb's kid brother, Chuck Berry's favorite backing band, the man who wrote "Mr. Bojangles," a future member of Poco, a band featuring the young Bruce Cockburn, and a whole lot more besides. Come travel The Golden Road, let your mind wander free and let your freak flag fly. Compiled by legendary psych musician and Psychic Circle label-head, Nick Saloman (The Bevis Frond). Artists include: Morning Sun, Bob & Kit, The Woolies, Mc2, The Rovin' Kind, The Last Draft, The Fun & Games, Keith Allison, The Kynd, Raintree, 3's A Crowd, Robin Kingsley, Circus Maximus, The Patriots, The Rogue Show, The Counts IV, The Happy Medium, Jimmy Satan, The Tiffany System, and The Ragamuffins.

Sunday Sunshine: The World of SNB Records
PS, UK One of the movers and shakers of the music biz in the modern era has been Simon Napier Bell, and during 1968-1969 he put his talents into A&R-ing his own label. Fresh from managing The Yardbirds, Johns Children and co-authoring for Dusty Springfield, and with backing from CBS, SNB picked up on the hip pop world flowing through London at the time. It is an extraordinary assortment from which we have distilled the most potent exotic, baroque and pop psych elements. All have high production values with the likes of the talented Ian Green as arranger. As you would expect most of the singles are today very rare, and have not been reissued or released on CD. That said there is growing awareness of the music from numerous quarters, with pick up from internet radio stations to magazines, and the label has attained a cult standing. First time reissue, first time on CD. A unique 60s collection. Remastered from original CBS held SNB tapes, includes very rare singles. Essential for pop psych and similar collectors." Messthetics #106 The Manchester Musicians Collective 1977-1982
PS, US Messthetics' first visit to Manchester surveys the most successful and innovative of Britain's post-punk-era musicians' collectives. The MMC's most famous spawn were obviously The Fall (who first played at an MMC meeting) and Joy Division (who loaned their P.A.), but the MMC's emphasis on public performance and its egalitarian ethic of shared gear, expertise, and, frequently, band-members, affected and inspired future stars and faintest sparks alike to create an unparalleled range of truly 'alternative' sounds. Twenty-one songs on the CD plus five bonus MP3 tracks. 80+ minutes of music. 24-page booklet, extensively documented with histories, photos and artifacts. Messthetics #106 features songs by the Mud Hutters, God's Gift, Dislocation Dance, Elti-Fits, Diagram Brothers, The Liggers, The Passage, Bee Vamp, Spherical Objects, Grow-Up, Contact, Slight Seconds, Armed Force, the Manchester Mekon, The Spurtz, and never-released tracks by The Elite, The Hamsters, Manchester Mekon, Bee Vamp, and Property Of (Messthetics fans will also note an unusual concentration of women-in-charge, unorthodox effects, provocative lyrics, wildly varied electronics and general non-punk stylings).

On The Chewing Gum Ground
PS, US Keeping a steady sneer but subtracting angst and teenage romanticism WALLPAPER on their debut album "On the Chewing Gum Ground" captures the modern era that they ostentatiously do not feel a part of. Wallpaper's core members started working on music together in middle school, and "On the Chewing Gum Ground" represents much of their adult work over the past four years. Hailing from Auburn, Washington - a place just close enough to the ocean to make weekend trips and understand what the Beach Boys are about - they mix '50s rockabilly and '60s surf mixed with the crucial wave of '80s underground music. The strength allure of the album comes in the juxtaposition of pop sensibilities with lyrics sung like a sliding shimmy but written with a call for a pop-cultural reform.

Wilderness
(k)no(w)here
PS, US WILDERNESS' third full-length album entitled "(k)no(w)here" was conceived as one musical piece, and the impetus for this composition came from an invitation to collaborate with renowned visual artist Charles Long at Long's exhibit at the Whitney Biennial in Spring of 2008. The eight identifiable parts of "(k)no(w)here" are not readily separated from each other, such is the flow from and into each part. Created in ways different than the previous Wilderness self-titled album (2005) and the Wilderness "Vessel States" album (2006), "(k)no(w)here" still retains the Wilderness sound, with some evolution. On the new album, James Johnson is sometimes joined vocally by Colin McCann (aka THE LORD DOG BIRD, whose self-titled debut was released by JAGJAGUWAR in the Summer of 2008). And, as on previous albums, McCann performs on guitar, Brian Gossman on bass, and William Goode on drums, but the resulting community of all these parts comes across as more dynamic, and the perceived space they inhabit seems more vast.

Wino
A Bottle of Pills with a Bullet Chaser

In addition to the many singles and lone album, the set includes six previously unreleased tracks, plus the live track "Dogs," recorded during one of their final live performances. Expertly digitally remastered from all of the original master tapes by Alan Douches at West West Side Music (Converge, High On Fire), "A Bottle Of Pills With A Bullet Chaser" is the perfect commemoration to the band that inspired dozens of later Louisville bands and helped launch TEMPORARY RESIDENCE a dozen years ago.

Women In Tragedy
Total Fucking Romance
PS, US Coming out of the dank dark testosterone-fueled underbelly of noise, BOB MCCULLY's project sits nicely beside the post-Wolf Eyes noise/industrial/drone genre that focuses on depravity & doom which includes acts like Robedoor, Prurient, & Hive Mind. Kneeling over a vast array of distortion pedals & processors, he pipes in synthesizers, guitars, & screams to create thick, harsh sounding loops & walls of sound. The emotional warmth evident despite the deafening buzz & crumble gives the project a Jesu or Nadja-like intimacy & immediacy. Half of the album delves into more structured "pop" terrain, using rigid drum patterns & heavy melodies, while the other half swims in his usual free drone psychedelia. A big, multilayered sound of bells & buzzsaws perfect for headphone-based sensory overload. Limited to 300

Within are compositions, possibility waves, constructed, originally, from manipulation of these feedback signals. The initial impressions from Jeff Parker were then added to the recordings. Parker interpreted, reacted to & in some cases painted a definitive picture of latent melodies within the feedback structures. Bookish, Simon
Everything/Everything (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE DECEMBER 9TH)
PS, US Vinyl Version! An unpredictable and dramatic "big band song cycle about science and information", Everything/Everything is a new departure for Simon Bookish, being his first album for TOMLAB. Additionally, whilst previous Simon Bookish releases have been informed by the sounds of digital synthesizers, Everything/Everything does away with them entirely to focus on live instruments. Scored for an ensemble dominated by saxophones, brass, piano, harp and Far sa organ, it features luminaries from both the jazz and experimental classical music scenes. Whilst this is almost certainly his most pop oriented release to date, Everything/Everything, as it's name suggests, nds room for moments of racing Philip Glass minimalism, lop-sided disco, expressionist cabaret, and even an eery ambient interlude. Lyrically, the album's concept is "the - good of information" in our modern age, taking in chemistry and ecology, language and art, sometimes surreal, sometimes humorous, sometimes provocative, a weird blur of fact and action, delivered in Bookish's distinctive English eccentric vocal. It's only natural that Simon Bookish would want to tackle this chaos of stuff, since 'Simon Bookish' is the pseudonym of London-based composer Leo Chadburn, whose diverse recent work has included everything from sound-art installations in Bregenz, Austria, improvisation and guest spots with Leafcutter John and Polar Bear's Seb Rochford, and computer music for contemporary dance at the Royal Opera House to an acclaimed appearance with the National Theatre as "The Singer" in Brecht's "Caucasian Chalk Circle".

PS, US LTD ED OF 600 copies in a custom made full color book bound CD case & inner sleeve. XXX marks the spot spot spot. "Fleur Du Mal's" transcendental mixture of high-lonesome & chamber classicism soundtracks a bit like The Assignation of Andrew Poppy by the Minimalist Terry Riley. CJ BOYD's bass continuo grounds the string section's rounds into a composite rock formation that's shaped like a cello but carries the stank of teen spirit. The compositions chunk along w/ quiet thunder & building textures; juxtaposing dramatic tension against fluid looseness, not unlike some of Moondog's more formal string works. But the piece de resistance is the beautifully strange choral coda at the end of the line. A pleasant surprise awaits.

Bronnt Industries Kapital
Häxan (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 25th)
PS, UK The world of horror soundtracks has long been an inspiration for Bronnt Industries Kapital, the musical project revolving around Bristol-based composer Guy Bartell, and it is no surprise that Bronnt should return the favor by delivering a horror soundtrack of its own. Häxan (1922, dir. Benjamin Christensen) is a fusion film using dramatization, documentary and animation to explore the themes of witchcraft and superstition. Met with outrage on its release, it has since been reappraised as a classic. Bronnt was commissioned to write a new soundtrack to accompany the film's first release on DVD in Europe (TVD3758) in 2007, and it is this soundtrack which forms the group's second album, the follow up to 2005's acclaimed Virtute et Industria. Much of Häxan was shot at night to enhance the sinister mood of the film, and Bronnt utilized a similar schedule to evoke the awe of the Sabbat. The soundtrack was composed and performed using a wide range of instrumentation, including clockwork devices, transistor organs, mellotron, clarinet, guitars, bespoke string instruments, pianos, tone generators, analog synthesizers and elaborate processing and manipulation through antique tape machines and plate reverbs. The resulting scope of the soundtrack is vast, ranging from minimalist clockwork lullabies to lush orchestral ensemble pieces, heavenly analog sound collages to hellish electrical miasmas, all imbued with a darkly hypnagogic ambiance worthy of Christensen's strange world populated by mechanical demons and castles in the clouds.

Calder
Lower (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 25th)
PS, UK Calder formed in Iceland when musical instrument maker Lárus Sigurðsson and Ólafur Josephsson, who is perhaps best known for his recordings under the alias Stafrænn Hákon, met and decided to join forces. Their first collaborations resulted in self-titled five-track album of improvised, experimental instrumentals that was released through Ólafur's Vogor Recordings and later picked up by UK indie Unlabel. Lárus' background is in classical music, having played with various Icelandic musicians and self-released a handful of solo recordings. His recent album Jarðhörpusálmar was improvised and recorded using musical instruments that he had designed and built himself. Ólafur Josephsson has been experimenting with ambient guitar arrangements under the name Stafrænn Hákon since 1999. He has released his music through various labels including his own Vogor Recordings, the Resonant Label and Awkward Silence Recordings, with the music progressing and becoming increasingly refined since his debut album Eignas Jeppa in 2001. After the creative success of Calder's debut, a second album was conceived in 2005 when Lárus and Ólafur started exchanging ideas, shaping and molding their music, with the material composed in a truly collaborative way - Lárus handed Ólafur acoustic melodic ideas and Ólafur added electronic elements, with tracks gradually acquired shape, depth and life. With this new music, melody, structure and beats have come more to the fore, although the beautiful and haunting guitar atmospherics are still evident, running like a thread through the album. 2008 saw the completion of this process and the resulting album has been entitled Lower. The music can perhaps best be described as a fusion of experimental, ambient, classical and acoustic music.

Curtain Speech (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE DECEMBER 9TH)
PS, US The music calls to mind contemporaries Antony & the Johnsons, Grizzly Bear, & sometimes the explosiveness of Animal Collective. However, a handful of other influences cloud the comparison as hints of the dissonance of Sonic Youth & Henryk Gorecki, expressive vocal techniques of Caetano Veloso & Mary Margaret O'Hara, & the romance & textures of Benjamin Britten & Edward Elgar underpin even the simplest of gestures. Stith's delicate yet confident voice sits amongst lush arrangements of piano, guitar, strings, electronics, choir, percussion, & a penny whistle or two.

Public Flipper Limited Live 1980-1985 [re-issue] (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 18TH)
PS, US 2CD collection that was originally released in 1986 as a 2LP of live material culled from 1980-85. The sound quality & playing are both a grimy, distorted mess, which suits the band just fine. Always alternating between endearing & abrasive FLIPPER left no room for the middle ground of "like." The album title is a shot at John Lydon & his alleged plagiarism of Flipper's artwork for his own PIL & it proves that the band was never opposed to alienating its audience, no matter how sanctified. Harsh, art-rock classics from one of San Francisco's most important post-hippy era bands.

The tour will kick off on December 4th in San Diego, USA. Hailing from Glen of the Downs, Ireland, GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT formed in 2002 and have already released 3 albums and one EP. GIAA's storied live performances have the unique ability to effortlessly ascend / transcend at any given moment, reaching bold crescendos of both of dim shimmer and blinding incandescence. The band make use of projected, self-edited video footage along with impressive lighting arrangements to form what it calls, a "full audio visual show", with each song accompanied by its own video. GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT's marriage of raw power and delicate beauty has drawn comparisons to the works of like-minded indie acts Explosions in the Sky and Mogwai. The band has performed all over the world including sell out shows in Boston, New York, London, Dublin and Moscow. The upcoming GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT live performances are listed in the Track Listing column. Updated GIAA news and tour information will be made available via the GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT web domains: "beauty and menace... fantastically broad and lush soundscapes... it's like watching a thunderhead slowly approach from the distance; dark, towering and fat with tension." - DROWNED IN SOUND "On Far from Refuge, their third full-length, GIaA ventures even further into the outer realms, streamlining their sound as if to make it sleeker for the demands of deep space flight. Jonquil
Whistle Low (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 18TH)
PS, SPAIN Hailing from the musical city of Oxford, Jonquil have had a very prolific two years of existence that has resulted in two full length albums, both on Try Harder Records (Foals, Blood Red Shoes), and two self-released tour CDRs. Numbering six members and a far greater number of instruments (the usual guitar bass and drums plus accordion, flute, violin, trumpet, melodica, piano, organ...) Jonquil have moved on significantly from the noise-tinged avant-folk of their debut, Sunny Casinos. This new Mini-CD, the first non-album release of the band, sees Jonquil reinventing themselves as re-inventors of pop music, with moments of sublime melodicism set against dense polyrhythms that call to mind Animal Collective, Built to Spill, early Arcade Fire or Akron/Family, and some camp-side gathering, incorporating doo-wop, party horn arrangements and gentle balladry. "Whistle Low" was recorded initially by front-man Hugo Manuel in his bedroom and finished with the rest of the band over a two week period at the end of 2007, hot on the heels of their much lauded second album, Lions, which received glowing reviews in publications such as the Wire and Rock Sound as well as many of the world's most influential blogs such as 'My Old Kentucky Home', 'La Blogotheque' and 'Nothing But Green Lights'.

Judys, The
Moo [re-issue] (DELAYED, PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE 2008)
PS, US The original 'Moo' album finally re-issued on CD for the first time! CD sports seven bonus tracks, mainman David Bean's "Modomusic" EP. Released almost four years to the day after Washarama and following an eighteen month hiatus, The Judy's Moo album has a slightly more progressive sound: richer production values, fuller arrangements and thicker harmonies. As the band returned to the stage in 1985, this was the album that showed the band's maturity and development as songwriters and musicians. The twelve songs on Moo, laced with solid-state irony, well-placed cynicism and standard issue Judys' wit, show the band at the peak of their creativity and acted as a springboard for their live extravaganzas. The album was released with The Moo Tour - a month of live performances across the state which included giant cereal boxes, moving conveyer belts of milk cartons, and a dancing cow while the band donned milkman uniforms. Critically acclaimed and fan-revered, The Moo Album continues to be a milestone in Texas pop music.

Judys, The
Land Of Plenty [re-issue] (DELAYED, PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE APRIL 2008)
PS, US First ever official release for The Judys last album, recorded but never released! In 1990, The Judy's set out to record a new album with a new Judy's sound. Featuring the lineup that had been established over a number of years the band, including Barbara Donaho (keyboards/guitars), Lee Malone (bass), and Darwin Keys (drums), set out to explore new horizons musically and thematically. Land of Plenty injected multi-layered keyboards and guitars, stacked vocals, a gospel choir, and even a bit of banjo into the band's palatte and sought to realize Bean's vision of a new Americana musical landscape. Broad in its scope and daring in its expansion of the band's definition of itself, Land of Plenty was shelved when the group disbanded before the CD's release. While a handful of copies have been given out, this is first time this long sought-after project has been available to the general public.

Kazumasa, Hashimoto
Tokyo Sonata: Original Soundtrack (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 25TH)
PS, JAPAN They were supposed to be leading a normal life. But something crept unexpectedly into their lives and turned this family into one of disharmony. Will there be a day when this family can ring in harmony again? TOKYO SONATA is a film portraying the typical family of modern day Japan and is an exploration into a new genre for world-renowned director Kiyoshi Kurosawa. The widely acclaimed film which received the Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2008 Cannes International Film Festival is also the first film score created by artist Kazumasa Hashimoto and noble is proud to announce the release of its original soundtrack. The minimal but heartwarming harmony created by the mellotron, piano, guitar and noise synchronizes brilliantly with the film to bring more strength to the world of Kurosawa. In addition to the film scores that brought colorful impression to the film, the album includes many unreleased pieces written for the film as well as a cover song of "Clair De Lune" by Claude Debussy, an artist much respected by Hashimoto and apiece that can also be heard in parts of the film. It is a soundtrack and a Kazumasa Hashimoto original album that can be enjoyed by Hashimoto fans and movie fans alike. As the title TOKYO SONATA indicates, music plays a central role in the film and Kazumasa Hashimoto took on this challenge with solid respect. The result is a collection of lean music that preserves the raw essence and core of the melody that help to guide the film to perfection, a monumental piece that celebrates the artist's entry into new horizons as a composer of film music. Kazumasa Hashimoto biography: Born in Tokyo. Composer/ Musician. Kazumasa Hashimoto has released 4 albums to present including Euphorium released from noble records in December 2007. Until now, the artist has received 5 stars in a review by Germany's DE:BUG magazine, his music has been used by the UK's BBC television, and his work has been taken up widely by Japanese and overseas media in Europe and the United States. Kirschner, Kenneth
Filaments & Voids (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 18th)
PS, US A subdued chord, and a subsequent quiet. A hovering drone, followed by a compelling absence of sound. True to its title, Filaments & Voids is comprised predominantly by one or the other: by carefully constructed audio of lingering delicacy or by singular silences of ambiguous depth. Over the course of two discs and nearly two and a half hours of music, composer Kenneth Kirschner focuses the listener's attention on the silence inherent in his sounds, and the sounds implicit in silence. Like the night sky evoked by the album's title, the music heard on Filaments & Voids is a broad and dark space inhabited by dispersed and luminous materials. Filaments & Voids is a 2-CD collection of Kenneth Kirschner's music featuring liner notes by Disquiet.com's Marc Weidenbaum and photography by Taylor Deupree. Kenneth Kirschner was born in 1970 and lives in New York City; he releases his music freely online through his website, kennethkirschner.com. His work is also available on CDs such as September 19, 1998 et al. (12k, 2003) and Three Compositions (Sirr, 2006); his most recent release is May (Room 40, 2008), based on a concert with Taylor Deupree recorded live in Lisbon, Portugal.

Las Escarlatinas
Al Galope (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 25TH)
PS, SPAIN Maybe it's slightly irrational to say that Las Escarlatinas are one of the greatest creations of humankind... but considering how much happiness they brought to the lovers of beauty and pop with their debut album (A todo color released in 2005), you are forced to believe there is something magical and supernatural about this quartet. Las Escarlatinas are one of the few bands that can create their own world. Their playground melancholy, Lolita vocals, the multi colored record sleeves, the 60's and 80's retro charm throwbacks, the ethereal dreamy collective feel, the pink and sticky bubblegum teenage spirit, it's all here...their very own universe that is. However this is only the tip of a musical iceberg that contains J-pop, bubblegum, beat pop with lush harmonies, sunshine and soft pop, beatles-esque moods, donosti pop, italo disco, gentle electronica, bossa nova... This time, the recipe created by Mateo Guiscafré has been cooked by the grand chef Guille Milkyway (La Casa Azul), a true guru in Spain and key opinion leader in the indie scene. Songwriters such as Alberto Matesanz (Mate, Plastic d'Amour), Fernando Márquez El Zurdo, Anne Arbor (Pedro Vigil & Natalia Quintanal), Sergio López De Haro (Kiki D'aki), Violeta Gómez, Miguel Angel Villanueva (Los Brujos), Pablo Jiménez (Pulpops) also ensure that magic is widespread in each of the twelve songs. Add two cover versions of songs by Olivier Libaux (Nouvelle Vague) and Korean hipsters, Misty Blue and voilà, Al galope. The record is just lovely. This is indie-ish pop (although the album has vibes that recall Saint Etienne, Ephemera, Mareva Galanter or The Cardigans) with sultry, angelic and delightful vocals and a generous budget production. Las Escarlatinas achieve being fashioned while being elegant indeed. Their voices are spectacular all over and the production is very much in detail while remaining very modern, straight, vivid and youthful. Everything about Las Escarlatinas seems young and tender. All this band wants is a chance to be heard, and you'll be doing yourself a favor to champion them. Every single song on Al galope is memorable, jewel-like, catchy, shockingly melodic, and tinged with irony and hope. It's hard to choose favourite songs on this album because they're all very well-crafted, both melodically and lyrically. They all get stuck in your head. Las Escarlatinas have definitely jumped to the major leagues. * Siesta also released solo albums of the Escarlatinas singers under the production of Ramón Leal & Mateo Guiscafré: Cristina Georgina (Mapamundi) and Bel Divioleta (Espejos).

Library Tapes
A Summer Beneath the Trees (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 25TH)
PS, US Library Tapes follow up the highly acclaimed Make Mine Music album Höstluft with the beautiful and atmospheric long player A Summer Beneath the Trees. A Summer Beneath the Trees steps away from the minimal sound of previous Library Tapes releases, with rich layers of sound and more varied instrumentation, and strings taking a more prominent role. Joining Library Tapes main man David Wenngren (piano, laptop and field recordings) are Peter Broderick (Bella Union, Type, Kning Disk) who adds violin, guitar, accordion, trumpet, celeste, viola and banjo on the six of the album's nine tracks, and Danny Norbury (Static Caravan, Ono) who plays cello on three tracks. The trademark ageing clicks and glitches of earlier releases are largely absent, and there is a newfound warmth and depth to these recordings. The album moves Library Tapes further into the realm of modern classical and cinematic soundtracks, with the music bringing to mind Arvo Pärt, Michael Nyman and Max Richter. Based in Gothenburg in Sweden, David Wenngren has also released music under the name Forestflies and has extensively toured UK, Europe and USA, playing live with the likes of Sylvain Chauveau, Greg Haines and Akira Rabelais.

Lorna
Writing Down Things To Say (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 18TH)
PS, US Signposts: Mojave 3, American Analog Set, Coastal, The Blue Nile. WORDS ON MUSIC is proud to present WRITING DOWN THINGS TO SAY, the third album by Nottingham, England's orchestral pop songsmiths LORNA. The quartet follow up their highly acclaimed 2005 record STATIC PATTERNS AND SOUVENIRS with another rare work that eschews convenient classification - embracing an expansive sonic palette without sounding eclectic (in no small part due to the dozens of instruments the band is able to skillfully perform and weave into the record's nine compositions). LORNA tours folk, old-time country, chamber pop, post-rock, and even avant-lounge on WRITNG DOWN THINGS TO SAY. But the genius of LORNA lies in the masterful (husband and wife) songwriting team of Mark Rolfe and Sharon Cohen-Rolfe. The duo have created an album unified in theme and texture by seamlessly cross-pollinating their songs with traces of all these musical genres - deftly bringing pedal steel, string quartets, harmonicas, vintage keyboards, and woodwind and brass arrangements into the fold - not to mention their sumptuous vocal harmonies. "Not In My Lighthouse" bustles with a warm bed of keyboards, on top of which Rolfe's gentle vocals casually flirt with alternating clarinet and flute melodies. This patient courtship builds to yield a wistfulness and exquisiteness once realized by Scotland's romantic perfectionists THE BLUE NILE. On "Think (Let Tomorrow Bee)" Sharon Cohen-Rolfe's voice is undressed to its poignant core - sheltered only by occasional strings and sparse acoustic guitar. The song is a stark interpretation of the 1993 SEBADOH composition - much in the way Ivo's THIS MORTAL COIL project breathed a fresh new atmosphere into the music of TIM BUCKLEY and ROY HARPER. "(I Wish I Knew) How to Build a House" employs a 7/8 meter to daringly bridge the intersection of post-rock and avant-lounge - perhaps having a conversation with AMERICAN ANALOG SET and STEREOLAB along the way. WRITING DOWN THINGS TO SAY is a record that rewards multiple listens, as the sundry instruments that are subtly and cleverly woven into the rich fabric of LORNA's songwriting surface and bloom.

Machine Fabriek & Stephen Vitiello
Box Music (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 10TH)
PS, US Rutger and Stephen sort of accidentally met through e-mail. A simple note regarding an ordering question for a CD led to an enthusiastic e-mail conversation and climaxed in a musical collaboration. This all happened in a very short period, both musicians being very inspired by the concept of "exchange," as a means to cross space and time -- Rutger living in the Netherlands and Stephen in Virginia. Most of the time, when (electronic) musicians work together it's a matter of swapping digital files. In this case they decided to do something different and sent each other a box full of (mostly non-musical, or musically non-functional) objects and recordings, with the "assignment" to make music with those objects and all as source materials. As the titles tell, we're talking about an egg cutter, thumb piano, a broken kraakle box, rice, chocolate sprinkles, old cassette tapes, a broken 7" record, etcetera, etcetera. Both musicians made two of their own solo tracks with the box they received, and the last track was done together by Rutger adding sounds and processing to a piece started by Stephen. For Rutger/ Machinefabriek this is part of his most delicate work. For Stephen, it was a new and extremely enjoyable form of long-distance collaboration. Machinefabriek: Rutger Zuydervelt, better known as Machinefabriek, lives in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Started as Machinefabriek in 2004, he released 40+ small run home-made cdr's as well as work for Type Records, Lampse, Digitalis, Staalplaat (Mort Aux Vaches) and now 12K. A double remix cd was released in 2007, with interpetations by Alva Noto, Pita, Mitchell Akiyama, Xela, Gert-Jan Prins and many more. Collaborations (live or recording) include Steinbrüchel, Jasper TX, Wouter van Veldhoven, Simon Nabatov, Frans de Waard, Aaron Martin and Peter Broderick. Stephen Vitiello: Stephen Vitiello is a sound and media artist based in Richmond, VA. CD releases include Bright and Dusty Things (New Albion), Listening to Donald Judd (Sub Rosa) and Untitled/Exchange, a collaborative CD with Michael J. Schumacher (A Question of Re-Entry). Solo exhibitions of Vitiello's sound installations, photographs and drawings have been presented at The Project, NY, Museum 52, London, the Texas Gallery, Houston, TX and Diapason, NYC. Group exhibitions include the 2002 Whitney Biennial and the 2006 Biennial of Sydney. Over the last 18 years, Stephen has collaborated with numerous musicians and artists including Scanner, Pauline Oliveros, Andrew Deutsch, Julie Mehretu and Tony Oursler.

Magnificents
Year Of Explorers (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE DECEMBER 9TH)
PS, US The latest release from this Scottish band is an epic saga of stolen synths, left-handed guitars, trans-European expressways, covert product placement, and serious studio tomfoolery. Where their eponymous debut was primarily fueled by raw punk power and electrifying excess, this record demonstrates a more measured method. They've toured with the Beta Band, Mogwai, Stereolab, and Trans Am.

Minotaur Shock
Amateur Dramatics (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 18TH)
PS, US Audio Dregs is pleased to announce the release of a longtime favorite from Bristol UK, Minotaur Shock; the musical side of David Edwards. There are currently 3 albums by him available, a compilation of old hits and some EPs out there, but this is his first stateside release now available on Compact Disc! How cool is that? "I'd describe Amateur Dramatics as school band meets Italo meets chamber music rubbing up on electro with a slice of acid, a sprinkling of minimalism and a short attention span. It's got saxophones, violins, clarinets and the insides of my grandma's mini-piano on it. It was influenced by many things, notably Fleetwood Mac, Detroit techno, Frank Zappa, Cluster, Andrew Poppy, Bowie, Italo house, Glass/Reich, Gentle Giant and Todd Rundgren. It was all written, arranged, recorded and produced by me mostly at home (occasionally in other people's houses). All instruments were done by me except clarinet, flute and saxophone which were played by the wonderful Emily Wakefield, and violin which was played by the excellent James Underwood of the Iskra String Quartet. Anna-Lynne Williams of Lotte Kestner provided vocals for 'This Plane Is Going To Fall'." -David Edwards, June 2008

Ocean
Pantheon Of The Lesser (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 11TH)
PS, US 2xLP to follow in about one month. Following their acclaimed breakthrough debut album that caught the ears of critics and fans worldwide, and became Important's highest selling album, Ocean has returned with their forward thinking, brutally heavy and purely minimalist sophomore album Pantheon Of The Lesser. Pantheon Of The Lesser was composed over a period of two years in Ocean's home studio in Portland, Maine. As the seasons passed each track was written, re-written, played and then re-played as layers were slowly stripped away until the true essence of the song was revealed. Once Ocean entered the studio it took another two years to deconstruct Pantheon Of The Lesser until they had found the essence of their writing. This disciplined deconstructionist approach to songwriting is how Pantheon Of The Lesser is how Ocean takes it to the next level of the abyss. The result of this compositional technique is over an hour of strictly bare instrumentation and a kind of natural heaviness that slowly rises and falls in a pure organic fashion. Everything in it's own time. Simply profound. Heavy like Schoenberg. While Ocean continues to explore and expand upon their "less is more" approach of profound musical minimalism and sheer heaviness, Pantheon Of The Lesser is a bit more musical than its predecessor. The Beacon, the opening track on Pantheon Of The Lesser, was played as Ocean's complete set on a recent US tour and on dates with Mono and Boris. Clocking in at 41 minutes on record and over an hour live; The Beacon evolves in 3 distinct movements with fleeting moments of hypnotic melody and earth shaking heavy dirges creating an all-encompassing tone of pure misanthropy. The second and final track on Pantheon Of The Lesser, titled Of The Lesser, carries a similar theme of misery. Written as an ode to distraction, chemical and otherwise, it is Ocean at their most personal: a pure sonic stream of consciousness in slow motion. Packaged in a deluxe foil printed heavy-duty cardboard jacket with art by renowned Maine illustrator Bruce Hutchison. The vinyl version is packaged in double 200 gram vinyl, packaged in deluxe letter pressed covers and limted to 500 copies.

Pop Levi
Never Never Love (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 26TH)
PS, US 2008 sophomore album from this Pop (no pun intended) singer/songwriter and former Ladytron member, probably the only contemporary musician in the world beloved of both Jarvis Cocker and Noel Gallagher. Recorded entirely in Hollywood at Quincy Jones' old studio, Westlake, where both Thriller & Off The Wall were laid down, Mr. Levi has returned with an album about the madness of love - 100% autobiographical, 100% clever, 100% dumb, 100% unique. And that's giving 400% already. From transitional rockers like 'Wannamama' and 'Oh God,' Pop spreads his wings, relying on a production flare, which makes the record feel fresh and slick as well as charmingly hi-lo-fi. 'Never Never Love' shows that while he hasn't abandoned the dynamics of the Rock group he has also been steeping himself in contemporary R&B. Flamboyant, utterly self-confident, completely his own man and so uninterested in the back and forth of fashion that everything he makes is an instant classic, Pop Levi is in the building. Bow down and give thanks.

ROM
Foot Signal (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 18TH)
PS, JAPAN A rich combination of beats & melodies. 2nd album by duo project of Prefuse 73's collaborator Epstein aka Roberto Range and drummer Matt Crum! Broken gears and stolen instruments - ROM takes these equipments and produces heart-vibrating melodies and crispy beats freely with a refreshing taste, After their more break-beaty 1st album "ROM", Roberto has collaborated with Prefuse 73 and such and delivers this 2nd full album. This 2nd album entitled "Foot Signal" is a beautiful example of organizing a minimal band in a modern sense - Multi performances of acoustic and electronics including the laptops as a duo is perfectly accomplished here. The beat approaches evolved from projects like Epstein and Boom & birds, the duo's musical roots; guitar sounds and a bit strange yet charming tones from the laptops chaining almost non-stop. The ensemble which is a mere adaptations of the "post-rock method" and the energetic flow of the instrumental beat music weaves into fresh, developing and creative sounds. You can also feel the warm psychedelia which you could hear on Prefuse 73's "Preparations / Interregnums". An outstanding album including the brilliant recording and mix by Jim O' Rourke's favorite pupil Jeremy Lemos (White/Light).

Scarlet's Well
Gatekeeper (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 25TH)
PS, SPAIN In the beginning, Scarlet's Well was Bid (of Monochrome Set fame) accompanied by a fluctuating cast of girlish singers, esoteric musicians and random collaborators. It was a beautiful but primarily solo vision. Lavishly illustrated albums emerged quietly, all set in the vicinity of a place called Mousseron, "a sickly village situated somewhere east of the Azores and only slightly north of the Styx" populated by howling wolves, seductive mermaids and a bawdy captain with his crew of beer-swilling pirates and off-kilter animals with disturbingly human characteristics. Seven albums have now been released and with the most recent two: Black Tulip Wings (2006) and Gatekeeper (2008) Scarlet's Well has evolved into a band in its own right, with live gigs, collaborative song writing, luscious merchandise, tantrums and uncorroborated suggestions of bizarre fantasies. A sense of band empathy and the benefits of varied influences are evident in both these albums but there is still a thematic consistency. Although there is a conceptual thread that runs through the albums, the songs still function as pop in the sweetest sense, i.e. they are catchy, you can sing along (if you must) and most are dance friendly. What make them special is their unpredictability and the dizzying range of musical genres combined with an essence that is simply 'Scarlet's Well'. It's Whirling Dervish meets gypsy troubadour with the crack of a whip on the rump of a unicorn ... then it gets fey and funky. Lyrics leap from cryptic literary allusions to pert whimsy and although there is a certain obscure quality there is also an air of familiarity: a morphic memory thing bringing on a parallel universe that reveals itself to those who are open to getting lost with new acquaintances down strange cobbled streets, wooded glades, uncharted waters or the dark tunnels of the underworld. Bid describes it better in 'November Night' from Gatekeeper, "Strange songs playing, so darkly chanted with words I feel but don't understand." While Peter Momtchiloff emphasizes the benefits of collaboration with New Friends, "We are your new friends, if the night ever ends it will feel as if we've always been here." Scarlet's Well is a big band - eight members in all - but the sound, although rich and multi-layered is surprisingly light and charming.

Schaeffer, Janek
Extended Play [Triptych for the child survivors of war and conflict] (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JUNE 10TH)
PS, US LIMITED EDITION 600. LINE is proud to release the latest audio work from British composer and installation artist Janek Schaefer based on his installation of the same title. Installation Reviews: "a piece to return to again and again... haunting and lulling" [The Wire, UK] "so inspirational, and in many ways very spiritual" [Gerry Turvey] "I was so deeply touched by your piece" [Mandeep Kaur Samra] Red is the colour of Life, of Death, and of Love. Scarlett, my first child, was born in 2005, and since then I have been very aware of how lucky we all are. have been constantly comparing this to the fact that my mother was born in Warsaw in 1942 - the epicenter of World War II. How opposite can two beginnings be? This inspired me to produce the Extended Play installation, which continuously and positively celebrates hope and new beginnings, for child survivors in all situations around the world. The original idea for the composition came from learning about the 'Jodoform' system of secret musical messages that were broadcast by the BBC Service, during music they played was given a particular meaning, which was interpreted by Polish Underground. Discovered from the original Jodoform logbook, that the lovely Polish folk song 'Tango Lyczakowskie', was broadcast on the day my mother was born. Song describes how children in 1918, had been forced to take up arms, in defense of their town. From this tune, chose a short rising musical phrase, and with my arranger Michael Jennings, developed a ten-minute score. Each of the three solo parts was then recorded separately, edited, and cut onto vinyl. In the gallery, 3 x Cello EP's, 3 x Piano EP's, and 3 x Violin EP's are played at either 33, 45, or 78rpm using nine retro record players. These play continuously, and each was modified to stop playing briefly in response to the audience moving around the exhibition. This has the effect of changing and extending the composition, so that it is never the same again.

MMM050 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 25th)
PS, UK Make Mine Music releases a collection of exclusive tracks showcasing the work of artists on the innovative label, as it reaches its landmark 50th release on Monday 24 November. The compilation includes new recruits Piano Magic and Calder, label favorites Epic45 and the musical return of label founder Scott Sinfield aka Portal. After quietly releasing a range of critically acclaimed albums and EPs, Make Mine Music now boldly states its manifesto. These are difficult times for the music industry with file sharing, illegal downloads and falling sales. The traditional music business model is failing and record labels are scrabbling to find a way to survive. Artists too are campaigning for better copyright laws and greater shares of royalties through coalitions. But these still rely on an outdated model of releasing music. For Make Mine Music, this isn't a crisis. It's a golden opportunity. Make Mine Music is a truly radical independent label, run and owned by the artists themselves. The artists pay for the manufacture and promotion of their own records and correspondingly receive 100% of any income generated. There are no management pockets to line, no shareholders to please, no restrictive contracts or demands placed upon the artists. Six years and 50 releases after its inception, Make Mine Music is proof that there is another way. It's time for other artists and labels to catch up. Tracklisting: Millimetrik Ignacio Ramonet et le Metronidazole, Avrocar Two Silver Czars, Schengen The Prince (From Ueno), The Doldrums Try A New Thing, Glen Johnson A Pause in the Night, Portal Prana (Slow Burner), Piano Magic Western Gothic, Yellow6 Day in Pripyat, Planivaar Slow Motion, Epic45 In All the Empty Houses, All Sides Marathon, Innerise Dreams at E38th Street, Weyland No, I Don't Want to be Part of Your Story, Still Crescent In A Northern Landscape, Jelly Antler Back to School (Original Edit), Calder Old.

If you dig the sound of Fairport Convention, early Bee Gees, The Moody Blues, the psychedelic Beatles... 21 tracks available on a compilation for the very first time. SHINDIG MAGAZINE: "It's been a long hiatus but at last here are two excellent new volumes of the cult Fading Yellow series. Vol. 8 is collection of British artist album tracks of the period 1968-75... A beautiful confection of pastoral shades and cotton wool clouds floating in a hazy Summer sky. Predominantly mid-paced and lightly orchestrated, these are often acoustic based songs with electric underpinning. A few, in the interval, have become more familiar, notably the two fine selections by Jan & Lorraine from their recently reissued Gipsy People album. The majority however will be new to your ears. The track selection and flow is pretty much faultless as one track melts effortlessly into the next, working its magic on the ears. In some instances, tracks are surprising reworkings of the most unlikely songs. For instance Raw's (aka New York Public Library) rendition of 'What To Do', from their US and Germany released only Raw Holly album consists of covers of Buddy Holly songs - this one is an orchestrated tabla and sitar version! There are the short sharp spurts like the enigmatic (because there is nothing known about him) Michael Blount with 'Acorn Street' from his 1971 Patchwork album, which at 1.58 leaves you wanting a lot more of the same. P.C. Kent's 'After Dark' is from their self-titled Deram Nova album and is pleasingly pop (think a lighter version of Blossom Toes's 'Postcard' for instance) whilst Vigrass & Osborne's 'Ballerina' (which was also a single or a B side I think) has all the atmosphere, heavy with pathos of Mike Batt's series title track 'Fading Yellow' from Vol.1. Storyteller's 'Alice Brown', Fuchsia's 'Me And My Kite' and Evensong's 'The Smallest Man In The World' are also excellent. Overall, the FY signature brand of soundscape is very much perpetuated here and fans of the series will lap this up. There are as usual liner notes and band pics in the booklet which help contextualise the music nicely. Buy with confidence."

Fading Yellow Volume 9 (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 25TH)
PS, SWEDEN Subtitled: 'The Other Side of Life: Timeless UK Pop-Sike & Other Delights, 1966-1972'. Limited Edition ninth installment of this very fine compilation series that collects the best Pop/Folk/Psyche sounds from the UK circa 1968-75. If you dig the sound of Fairport Convention, early Bee Gees, The Moody Blues, the psychedelic Beatles... 21 tracks available on a compilation for the very first time. SHINDIG MAGAZINE: "Here we are squarely back in singles territory. Pop Workshop's 'Fairyland' is a good starter and manages to be both brash and gentle at the same time. Suzi Klee's 'Punch And Judy Girl' is a plaintive and tremulous pop ballad by this 'Swiss Miss' (I've always wanted to use that somewhere!); it comes across like Jan and Lorraine produced by Mike Batt (only it was produced by Georgio Gomelsky!). Dave Christie's 'Penelope Breedlove' makes its commercial compilation debut (and is also included on Psychic Circle's Fairytales Can Come True comp also out this month); a fabulous and atmospheric pean to the object of his affections, this is NOT the same version as the 6AX acetate compiled on Syde Tryps Vol.7. Although it's the same song, the two versions are markedly different in arrangement and timing, so you certainly need both. Pussyfoot's 'Hasty Words' is another beauty with its lilting 3/3 waltz timing and a lovely choral vocal job to boot. Mike Leslie's 'Office Girl' has been a long time want of mine in the original, a delightful ode to a lonely clerical worker lost in the urban crowd as the singer puckers up the courage to approach her. It deserved to be more than a B side too. Rodney Bewes' 'Dear Mother Love Albert' is the topside to the already compiled and much sought after 'Meter Maid' and it has a similar vibe - was this the actual TV series signature tune or was it written as a single in its own right I wonder? It sounds way too magically bendy for 1970 television! Christian's 'Other Side Of Life' is another restless orch popper with more than a passing reminder of The Apple's 'Other Side' as well. A good string arrangement adds a lot to it. Tony Ritchie seems to have recorded quite a few sides in Europe including the excellent 'Rain On My Window' included here with its urgent "loner" vibe that would have suited Paul & Barry Ryan for instance c.1967. Maybe it's about time a Tony Ritchie anthology was compiled? This is another excellent collection of emotionally challenging sides. You may encounter some of these sides individually occasionally but it is only when they are compiled with this level of aesthetic skill that they fully bloom."

Week That Was, The
S-T (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 26TH)
PS, US 2008 debut album from the British Electro Pop outfit, chiefly Field Music dude David Brewis' big brother, and featuring contributions from Field Music colleagues. Musically the record is an expansive tribute, paying direct (and indirect) homage to the wildly ambitious Linn Drum and Fairlight experiments of Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, and Tin Drum-era Japan. Fused with typically detailed arrangements and a sense of drama, this makes The Week That Was a brain-shattering, 32-minute epic, straying far outside the conventions of most indie-guitar music.

Welcome to the Welcome Wagon (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE DECEMBER 9TH)
