Parasol New Arrivals • September 11, 2007

Hey all,

Well, today is the day, friends. September 11th marks one of the heaviest release dates we’ve had in quite some time. Also, our co-worker, Mr. Jim Kelly is celebrating the day he was born and if you count all of the new releases in the update today, you’ll unlock the code, which will reveal his age. And let me tell you, there are a lot of new releases in the update. So while Ebenezer Kelly’s gently removing the cobwebs from another year come and gone, we’re going to hip you to a few of the new frequencies in heavy rotation.

You won’t go wrong with the likes of Le Loup, Wooden Shjips, June Panic, Shout Out Louds, Animal Collective, Emma Pollock and Pinback. Also, the KTL DLPs have arrived so please form an orderly line.

There's also some interesting pre-order promotional goings-on for upcoming releases by Jens Lekman and The Sunset Rubdown. Place a pre-order for either of these titles (or both) in either of the available formats (or both) and get some extra-special bonus download action. Find the titles in the pre-order list far below for all the details.

Tuesday’s always pouring,

Royal & Paul

Le Loup "Throne of the Third Heaven" CD $11.00 (Hardly Art)
Sub-Pop side-label Hardly Art has scored twice, first with the respendently retro Arthur & Yu and again with the mesmerising debut from banjo-happy DC troupe Le Loup. Sequester seven or eight twenty-somethings in a basement with a couple banjos, what must be a vintage Space-Echo unit, plus an arch appreciation for twisted literature (the album concept was inspired by Dante's Inferno), and things are gonna get apocalyptic. Le Loup's all about cavernous urban folk, megacathedral choruses, birds singing, bongs bubbling (probably)... Think The Books, Sufjan Stevens, Godspeed You Black Emperor, The Arcade Fire, Pinback...but think about them all plucking banjos, in a catacomb, with spooks and specters! Sound samples on the front page.

Abernethy
College Grove
PS, CANADA College Grove carries eleven tracks of folk balladry from chamber to observatory to summer lawn, touching on poetic, spiritual and indie pop genres with grace and a kind of understated irreverence. Abernethy's music is expressive of our attraction to simple, compelling mysteries; his voice is both lure and quarry. Influences are refracted as surrogate ancestries: interred in mirrored caskets, light drawn through earth, roots, green foliage. College Grove straddles the playful (The Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, Harry Nilsson) and incantatory (Leonard Cohen, Judee Sill) like a double-faced moon. It is modern music, as everyone once knew. "Abernethy sings like someone dealing a deck of cards. Everyone gets the same, and each in turn."- www.saidthegramophone.com "Abernethy sing songs of ice and lakes and forests and the few scattered people that live between them. It's an old world, but a new world and consequently one that is not yet tamed. There's magic there still, and spies, and intrigues of each and every beautiful kind. Dinosaurs who've forgotten their cues still wheel about the sky and through it all, beneath the ground, the thread of a voice like a rich seam of gold."- www.lovelyparty.co.uk "A deep and mysterious voice ... a take on the epic folk of older days ... Odd harmonies and dreamy songwriting cast the music into hypnotic reverberations ... something which I've found hard to come across these days." (Five stars out of five) -www.shzine.com

Alberta Cross
Thief & the Heartbreaker
PS, US Seven song mini-album from London-based Brit/Swede duo who sport a lovely sound "inspired by Laurel Canyon ca. 1969 but shaped by East London 2007." Full of soulful roots-based tunes where early 70's Neil Young runs strong, but with a modern sense of time, place & production.

Allen, Daevid
Good Morning!
PS, UK In 1975, following his departure from GONG, the highly influential group he had founded, Daevid Allen sought musical solace in the village of Deja on the island of Mallorca. Here he encountered a group of Catalan musicians, Euterpe, with whom Allen began collaborating. Recorded in Mallorca, the album "GOOD MORNING" was released by Virgin Records in 1976 to great acclaim, being a unique work that was regarded by fans and critics as being equally as good as anything he recorded with GONG, if not better. Filled with Allen's startling original musical observations, "GOOD MORNING" appeared briefly on CD in the early 1990's and vanished quickly. Long sought after by the legions of GONG / DAEVID ALLEN followers, ESOTERIC RECORDINGS is proud to announce the reissue of this album with fully restored artwork and superb 24-bit digitally remastered sound. THE FIRST EVER OFFICIAL CD RELEASE FOR THIS CLASSIC ALBUM IN SIXTEEN YEARS.

Animal Collective
Strawberry Jam
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "With Strawberry Jam, the orgiastic aural carnival sideshow begins to change a bit. There is a growing tension at work here in the music. There is Panda Bear's warm, bubbling sunshine pop that's as childlike as Brian Wilson's or Bobby Callendar's. He's got the cosmic vibe that expresses itself as goodwill toward everything... On the other hand, there is Tare's utter sense of alienation, his strangeness -- and estrangement -- from the limits and inconveniences of the human body and its politics, and his questioning of his own place in human relationships and interactions. It too can express itself as a kind of manic glee, but it's far more brittle. That said, it makes for an utterly compelling, even obsessive listen... So this tension and sharp, edgy contrast is felt now more than ever before on AC's records, but it's a great thing. It doesn't feel or sound personal, and it doesn't sound as if anybody is interested in closing the gap. Which is wonderful, because what literally bleeds out of the speakers is the most primal yet most sophisticated record AC have done to date. Children could sing these melodies -- and that's the point -- but it took cleverness, a collective sense of humor, and faith in one another to put Strawberry Jam into such a seamless, delicious whole."

Apparat
Walls
PS, US ON DOUBLE VINYL! It describes a circle that pulls many elements together into a protected, enclosed space where they jostle & roam free: strings & mallet instruments; rock guitar & gravelly sawtooth synths; stuttering digital percussion & muscular studio drumming. What might be most striking about is the way it creates a kind of single, sustained mood; this is an album for listening to all in one go, front to back. This is one of those road-trip records, one of those coming-down records, one of those bedding-down records.

Ateleia
Nightly
PS, US With "Nightly," ATELEIA's JAMES ELLIOTT artfully evokes the humid krautrock of POPOL VUH within a whirlpool of lush minimalism, nimble electronica and digital psychedelia. It is a voyage up a primeval river of sound within a steaming jungle of invisible detail -- where the ultimate destination is forever out of reach.

Athletic Automaton
Journey Through Roman's Empire
PS, US On their second full-length album the band devolves without diminishing. Songs & instrumentation have been reduced to key components, stripped bare pretense until only the core remains, evaporating the distance between listener & band. This is minimalism set on heavy & trance gone sour. While deceptively simple & repetitive, the music is never rigid, never complacent or familiar. Alternately a swirl of precision and a countercurrent of resistance, Athletic Automaton is unafraid to find virtue in the accidental while remaining purposeful & determined.

Axe Riverboy
Tutu To Tango
PS, US Tahiti 80's frontman and principle songwriter, Xavier Boyer, one of the most distinctive and loved voices in indie rock, further propels French rock on its upward spiral with this long awaited solo record, recorded under the name Axe Riverboy, (an anagram of Xavier's name). A blend of superb songwriting, sing-a-long choruses, ringing guitars, and compressed pianos. A warm rediscovery of rock and pop with folk overtones, brilliantly drawn from the sounds upon which early Tahiti 80 thrived.

Baby Control
Best War
PS, CANADA Featuring Zoë Verkuylen (The Red Light Sting) & Mark Colavecchia (North Of America). The pursuit for a contemporary definition of "punk" is stretched and incessant. While current splinters now imply a rigid set of sonic rules dictating a specific tempo, tone and simplicity, or, more perplexing, a chain store consumerist and mall rock slant, one can't help but question if these modern variations in any way retain the spirit from which punk was birthed. Baby Control's debut full-length, Best War, undeniably captures something along the lines of what punk spirit might have once meant to some, but considering the gray area in which the current definition resides, the parallels are relative. Perhaps it is the anxious and inspired energy with which the four piece plays. The recording is a testament to this; recorded over two days in an East Vancouver garage, one gets an immediate sense of the ferocity of the performance - the drums pound and ring in a way that can only be achieved with the hardest of hits, the vocals stress and distort like they were belted through a blown PA (which, it turns out, they were). Or maybe it's the detailed yet raucous guitar work. Dan's brilliantly precise technique juxtaposes Mark's bending fuzz with unique character; the former displays an irrefutable talent while the latter tilts its hat to both Sonic Youth's earlier work and sheer bombast. The combination is absolute. This is not to say that Baby Control is necessarily a punk band; in fact, the four members might deny the connection completely. Similarly, the music itself betrays punk's three-chord race to the finish and ventures into jangly, mid-tempo pop territory, occasionally adopting a blues swagger. Always dense with discord, the guitar and vocal lines still somehow infuse themselves with hooks. Despite the mish mash of influences, Best War sounds unquestionably focused and direct, a gorgeously flawed declaration from a band with a sharp, acidic purpose. Featuring members of some of Canada's most seminal post punk bands. Tour's planned for the majority of summer/fall 07, including some shows with The Blood Brothers, and Sebastien Grainger (Death From Above 1979).

Besnard Lakes, The
Casino Nanaimo
PS, US In early 2007, THE BESNARD LAKES released a full-length album on JAGJAGUWAR that quickly made it onto numerous and budding best-albums-of-the-year short-lists by a whole range of music-listening pedigree. Now these inspired Montrealers continue what they've started, re-stoking the flames and releasing two additional tracks. Side A is "Casino Nanaimo", a place where repetitive sound and lights engulf addicted gamblers all vying for space on the eternal wheel of fortune. And then there is side B, "Devastation (alternate version)", the unedited and original straight-to-two-track nine-minute version, recorded live-off-the-floor at Breakglass Studios.

Bison
Earthbound
PS, CANADA "When Bison took its first step amps were scorched and drums were smashed. Born of the ashes of seminal Vancouver skate-thrash band S.T.R.E.E.T.S., Bison are every head banger's dream. Their riffs are colossal and flow like a mighty river into a sea of fuzzed out shredding. Their message is punk rock angst and revolution, with the occasional nod to white wizards, the king of swine and a mythical beast called the "Stokasaurus". For their debut album Earthbound they've managed to capture their massive live sound on tape with the help of Jesse Gander (The Hive). In a perfect world Bison will be playing with High On Fire at your favorite dive bar, all of your friends will be there and a beer will cost a quarter. By the end of their set their amps will be in a ruined heap on top of the drum kit and somebody will be bleeding. It better be you."

Black Lips
Good Bad Not Evil
PS, US This debut succinctly epitomizes all that's special about Atlanta's favorite flower punk sons: the uncontained energy, undeniable songcraft, and unrivaled showmanship are all on full display, as is a newfound sense of the world around them. Songs like "Katrina" and "Bad Kids" spare none of the Black Lips' trademark smirk and smear, but also demonstrate a purpose and perspective not always at the forefront of the band's music. "Good Bad Not Evil" traffics in the kind of ragged rock harmony missing from record stores for so long.

Blow, The
Parentheses
PS, US THE BLOW's smash hit from "Paper Television" is finally available on an attractive 7" with a fine selection of remixes from some talented friends. Lille, France based trio DAT POLITICS have taken the mellow, springlike love song on a bouncy rollercoaster ride. A hyperactive beat mashup has replaced the original beat, while keeping singer KHAELA MARICICH's sweet voice safely belted through the loops. London's new premiere resident DJ RORY PHILLIPS is one of the heroes of The End's Trash (now Durr) Club fame. Fresh off of remixes for FRANZ FERDINAND and LES GEORGES LENINGRAD, Phillips has given "Parenthesis" a more sensitive treatment, transforming the rhythm into a static, repetitive, but cool house beat. Rounding out this single is the previously unreleased "Get Around," a frantic, dynamic gem from the "Paper Television" sessions that you shouldn't miss!

Standing with cocked heads & shrugged shoulders above that pack are The Box Social, who write smart pop songs with sharp hooks that cut through the feedback & the falling-over-oneself. C.O.C.O
Play Drums + Bass
PS, US Up from the swamps of the death disco comes a new offering from the minimalist soul group all the heads call C.O.C.O. OLIVIA NESS (bass, drums, vocals) and CHRIS SUTTON (drums, bass, vocals) have been tapping the primal groove for a while now using only the most basic of instrumentation, but this time our explorers have decided to travel to the outer limits of the beat. C.O.C.O.'s mission is simple: "Play Drums + Bass" and that credo was the inspiration for their third - without a doubt their best - record. The musical spectrum continues to expand into the nether regions of dub reggae (for a tribute to the late great TAMARA DOBSON) all the way to the sunny side of surf rock.

Circle
Katapult
PS, US Finland's Circle are one of the leading psych-rock bands playing today, releasing records and touring for over a decade now. Founding member Jussi Lehtisalo handles the majority of vocal duties with a gruff, low-end growl. The music is heavy and atmospheric with repetitive riffs and haunted keyboards which create a twisted, spooky mood. Influenced by equal parts 60s psychedelia and venom, "Katapult" is perhaps the most diverse, groundbreaking, dark, and primitive Circle album yet.

Dirty Projectors
Rise Above
PS, US Over three full lengths, an EP, and five different live bands in four years, DAVID LONGSTRETH has created in DIRTY PROJECTORS a body of music of original and variegated beauty. The breadth of his talents as a songwriter, arranger, bandleader and singer call to mind PRINCE, JONI MITCHELL, and BJÖRK. His constantly evolving sound - both live and on record - the sheer intensity of the music, and the originality of his voice set him apart. Among modern music makers, he is a maverick: a loner and a rebel. From beginning to end, Dirty Projectors' new offering, "Rise Above," is a reimagining of BLACK FLAG's seminal 1981 record "Damaged." It is not a covers record. Longstreth attempted to rewrite his favorite adolescent album word for word, from memory. A concept so lofty might just be hot wind if "Rise Above" weren't such a hell of a record on its own terms. It resounds with a kind of elegant simplicity: beautiful interlocking guitar parts, gorgeous three-part vocal harmonies, and some great songwriting. CHRIS TAYLOR of GRIZZLY BEAR manned the knobs, giving "Rise Above" the same rich sound that he brought to his own band's acclaimed album "Yellow House." Longstreth used the same musicians that appeared on the US tour on which he debuted these songs, and "Rise Above" captures the inventiveness and raw power of Dirty Projectors' live arrangements at long last.

Echos Of The Whales
Echoes Of The Whales
PS, ITALY If whales were able to make music how would it sound? We can't be sure they would use the same resonance these two boy scouts extracted from their instruments, yet we have good reasons for believing whales music would probably be as minimal and ambient as this. Though Populous and Pierpaolo Leo are such different musical figures (the first best known for his two indie hip-hop records on Morr Music, the latter for his long time experimentations in the avant-garde milieu), they collaborated and recorded their EOTW album at home, helping themselves with all but modern
technologies, aiming at the spirit of pioneers of electronic music like Raymond Scott and psychedelic-rock heroes like United States Of America. EOTW is a record of eerie folk with guitars (played by Stefano Pilia and Jukka Riverberi of Giardini Di Mirò, among others), Farfisa organs, feedbacks and digital grains merging to create a fertile resounding ground: a real extension of the natural environment. Actually, you may find listening to these echoes very fulfilling while paddling in your kayak, cleaning up a shore or trying to photograph penguins in Antarctica.

PS, US Their second full-length builds on the band's pretty, shoegazer pop and richly textured space rock soundscapes by emphasizing powerful rhythms and beautiful melodies that take the songwriting to a new level. "Hideout" is more like a sonic galaxy that engulfs you from all angles. You're enveloped by layers of reverb, loops, and the interplay of male/female voices. A driving, forceful rhythm section fuels a propulsive energy that gives an urgent quality to much of the album, whereas other tracks convey a wistful melancholy. It's this combination of ethereal atmosphere and strong rhythm that makes the album wholly compelling and promises a powerful live experience. "Wonderfully off-kilter pop songs" - NME.

Gang Gang Dance
Rawwar
PS, US "Rawwar" is the first glimpse of exactly what the band have been up to over this prolific year. Clocking in at just over twenty minutes and sprawled across three tracks, the release plays like a GANG GANG DANCE sampler of sorts; a taster for what is to come. "Rawwar" opens with "Nicoman": a live favorite from the last few years which has been refined in the studio.bombastic and dance-oriented it blends the bands affection for musical styles, propelling the listener through the four minutes of audible tribal chaos, while at the same time demonstrating GGD's talent for pop melody. "Oxygen Demo Riddim" finds the band improvising and building musical ideas into a dreamy hypnotic instrumental interlude. The final, almost cinematic, track is a studio composition entitled "The Earthquake That Frees Prisoners" which unfolds over ten minutes. This was painstakingly assembled in the studio and incorporates conversational dialog from their deceased band member Nathan Maddox interwoven into the bands compositional structure.

Their 2005 debut, "Thunder, Lightning, Strike" was critically lauded for its cheerleader anthems, syrupy string samples, and mad-as-a-hatter horn arrangements. PS, US The songs on the band's fourth and finest LP were initially meant as the soundtrack to a screenplay that Tim Kasher (vocals, guitar, member of Cursive) started writing in 2006. These songs seemed to describe moments of raw emotion more than chronicle a linear tale, so the group kept them as close to their original incarnations as possible, recording them true to form. The results are more stripped down and threadbare than previous Good Life creations. Yet the songs are also quite expansive, digging into deep emotional territory through narrative and melody. Achingly beautiful and sharply astute, "Help Wanted Nights" details human nature in the most honest
way possible - taking risks without regret.

Grayskul
Bloody Radio
PS, US Born out of the Pacific Northwest's Oldominion hip-hop collective, Onry Ozzborn and JFK emerged as Reason and Fiddleback Recluse in 2004, forming the righteously eerie alliance known as Grayskul. Always reinventing themselves, the two return as Count Draven (Onry) and Count Magnus (JFK) to deliver this release; reverse brainwash music for today's hip-hop listeners, typically force-fed imaginary genres. Grayskul smashes these genres seamlessly into one while interweaving all with message, substance, concepts, wittiness, opinion, and most of all, honesty while still maintaining a sense of humor, imagination, and originality.

Hamilton, Megan
Feudal Ladies Club
PS, CANADA I dare say, we receive, and eventually sell, an awful lot of Cdn indie roots/alt country/ whatever releases, but this one is seriously above the pack in spirit, atypical execution, and an original voice. File under: roots/folk/singer-songwriter/country/indie/pop. "A gently twinkling country/folk gem of an album, Feudal Ladies Club is refreshing and enchanting. Singer-songwriter Megan Hamilton is a new face in the Toronto scene, coming to music from the world of theatre. Her stage background is evident in the songs on this disc: there's a theatrical quality to her performance that adds to its considerable appeal. Alternating between "tinkly" piano, autoharp and guitar, each of the songs has its own distinct personality - from the quavering country ballad "Don't Ask Me" to the silly, rhyming and whimsically rollicking "Sleeping on the Floor." Hamilton's unpolished vocals possess a raw and penetrating poignancy; wispy and occasionally wavering off-key, her voice seems to echo as if from across a vast abyss, beckoning alluringly but ultimately remaining aloof. It's this vocal quality, as well as the wistful lyrical content, that gives her music such an overwhelming sense of yearning. A beautiful and quirky album full of character, endearing flaws and delicious melancholy." - Rachel Sanders, EXCLAIM! Magazine

Harper Lee
Go Back To Bed
PS, US Welcome repressing of the magnificent debut album from Matinée favorites Harper Lee. Originally released in 2001, the album was an early highlight of the Matinée catalog and received a bit of attention from the late John Peel who played singles 'Dry Land' and 'Bug' on his legendary radio show. An English duo featuring Keris Howard (Brighter, Hal, Trembling Blue Stars) on vocals and guitar, and Laura Bridge (Hood, Kicker) on guitar, keyboards, and drums, Harper Lee has proven to be one of Matinée's most popular artists. Named after the famous American author of the classic novel 'To Kill A Mockingbird', the duo formed in 1999 with a plan to release one brilliant single, take the world by storm, and withdraw from the public eye just as Lee did following the success of her single novel. Luckily, the modest success of its debut did not afford the band an early retirement so they continued creating classic releases through the brilliant 'He Holds A Flame' EP last year. The band has earned passionate reviews of it's four singles and three albums 'Go Back To Bed' (2001), 'Everything's Going To Be OK' (2002), and 'All Things Can Be Mended' (2004). Featuring ten classic tracks of melancholy pop with beautifully layered keyboards and guitars plus heartbreakingly earnest lyrics, 'Go Back To Bed' is an essential release from the Matinée catalog in stock again following years of unavailability.

Helios
Ayres
PS, US AMG: "What Helios' previous release on Type lacked in character has been fixed by Ayres, no doubt about it. Eingya featured pleasant and clever quasi post-rock, which this album now turns into delightful electro-folk. It turns out that the previous album was missing only one ingredient: vocals! For the first time here, Keith Kenniff (the man behind the Helios moniker) sings, with a very nice, quiet, and frail voice. The opening track, "A Rising Wind," with its multi-tracked looped vocals and aerial ambience, immediately brings to mind Patrick Watson's sound world (minus the electric guitar) crossed with Brian Eno's. This highly melodic, slow-paced song could also be compared to Low, Barzin, or Uphill Racer..."

Henry, Joe
Civilians
PS, US Since the release of 2003's acclaimed "Tiny Voices", singer/songwriter Henry has appeared mainly as a producer, working on career defining releases by Aimee Mann, Ani DiFranco, Elvis Costello, Solomon Burke, and most recently as producer and co-writer of "Strange Weirdos" (with Loudon Wainwright), the soundtrack to the film "Knocked Up". Working with this generation's finest songwriters inspired Joe to his strongest set of songs on "Civilians"; songs of a new warmth and directness and a bold sense of melody that rides atop the cutting edge arrangements he's become known for. Features legendary pianist/songwriter Van Dyke Parks (everyone from the Beach Boys to U2) and jazz guitar pioneer Bill Frisell (Elvis Costello, Norah Jones).

Ielasi, Giuseppe
August
PS, US 12k presents the latest solo work from Italian composer Giuseppe Ielasi. August is the 4th full-length cd from Ielasi following his critically acclaimed debut Plans (Sedimental, 2003) and the stunning Gesine and s/t (Häpna, 2005, 2006). August takes a more linear approach to Ielasi's composing with sounds stretched like like layers of gauze forming a thick, soft blanket. Utilizing piano, hammond organ, guitars, dobro, synthesizers and shortwave radio, Ielasi creates deep, warm drones and suspended, scratchy melodies with a hint of despair and melancholy that make this a very introspective album. His trademark guitar and live approach to instrumentation are in the forefront yet set behind an expertly processed veil of subtle electronics. The textures are unabashedly acoustic but buried and moody enough as to question their origin. August is a haunting, but beautiful album that falls neatly between the starkness of Gesine and the scattering rhythmic complexity of s/t. LIke music for a farewell, an ending of ends, August is moody, static, slow and emotional.

Irene
Long Gone Since Last Summer
PS, SWEDEN Less than one year after the debut "Apple bay" the ten piece collective Irene returns with a new, wonderful album. "Long gone since last summer" combines big arrangements, crystal clear production and unsurpassed sing along-qualities in an irresistibly elegant manner. The slightly unpolished, 60's influenced sound found on the debut has cleared up. This time Irene aimed at making an album that will be impossible to place in time when listened to in the year 2025, and still sounds great. A big sound demands a big band. Since last year Irene has expanded to a ten piece collective. This could have made touring abroad impossible, but despite this they managed to tour large parts of Europe including France, Germany, Spain and the UK. They've already booked Germany, the UK and the US for the fall and more shows are being planned. "Long Gone Since Last Summer" is written, arranged and produced by Irene's own Tobias Isaksson, aka Bobby, and recorded by Ulf Wederbrand at Studio Folkhemmet. Irene has been as high as spot 16 on the top list of artists on Elbo.ws! That means they've been one of the most blogged about bands in the world of indie pop (this page has almost 2200 registered blogs). "The new Irene track brims with jangly guitars, effervescent horns, and plenty of backing singers to answer lead vocalist Bobby's playfully referential words of adoration" - Pitchfork. "Sounds fantastic" - Eardrums.

June Panic
Songs From Purgatory
PS, US The material embodied on "Songs From Purgatory" was recorded in vans, dank basements and tiny apartments in Grand Forks & Fargo, North Dakota using crappy microphones on an even crappier 4-track machine. This body of work showcases a songwriting and producing talent that perhaps was only commercially held back by its medium - one which he initially embraced as a matter of necessity, but eventually grew to deliberately embrace with the zeal of a lo-fi revolutionary. According to JUNE, "Over time, I came to appreciate the sounds I was getting, and it dawned on me that recording in an expensive studio is not somehow inherently superior to 'lo-fi' recordings - it is simply a different medium." Originally released as cassette-only albums on his own label 3 Out Of 4 Records, June's master tapes were almost destroyed in the Great Flood of 1997 that consumed Grand Forks. Over 200 master tapes sat submerged under the murky Red River water for several days in his parents' basement until saved through a painstaking cleansing process that is hilariously documented in the liner notes to this collection. Brought into this world by June, taken out by the Flood, then brought back by June, these songs have been re-mastered by the able hands of the iconic KRAMER.

Le Loup
The Throne Of The Third Heaven Of The Nations' Millennium General Assembly
PS, US Created during a time of personal crisis, "The Throne" is a cataclysm, an escape, and a journey. Inspired largely by Dante's "Inferno", the complex themes of this record are characterized by mounting tension and dramatic swells, coupled with an engaging emotional resonance that lifts just as much as it illuminates. A collection of rushing narratives that connect the individual struggle of each of us to the death of the universe in a manner that's both intimate and unshakably vital. Think Books, Sufjan, Godspeed, Arcade Fire, Pinback...but think about them all with banjos! CRAWDADDY: "Their rookie effort, Throne, creates a brand of echoing, gently apocalyptic pop. Nominally themed around Dante's Inferno, the album opens with "Canto I", and lays out Le Loup's formula. Nearly every song's spine is a simple banjo roll, on top of which organs, hushed vocals, and analog and digital percussion spring up... In the era of the iPod shuffle, Throne is a cohesive statement, with each song feeding from its neighbors, and a compelling meditation on endings and empty cities."

Linfinity
Live at Marcata: Demos
PS, US New York City-based LINFINITY had seemed a bit bottle-necked for some time to frontman DYLAN VON WAGNER. Having written five volumes of his John Cale-meets-Alan Vega series "The Manual For Free Living" and having only recorded one full band album, he was getting an itchy trigger finger. He had been playing new songs with solo acoustic arrangements at live performances, and he liked the sparse arrangements. When approached by ST IVES, it seemed like a good opportunity to show some of his sketches that will appear on future albums. Von Wagner recorded the album live in Marcata Studios, a massive barn in upstate New York with producer Kevin McMahon. Perched on a 30-foot balcony overlooking the barn, Von Wagner recorded the album late in the evening, using a Marshall stack as a PA, giving it a unique bite and space. Staying up for 24 hours straight, Kevin McMahon did a quick mix and master of the proceedings. The result is a raw and thrilling document that would rest nicely somewhere between Cale's "Vintage Violence" and Roy Orbison's "Blue Bayou" demos.

Lucksmiths, The
Spring A Leak
PS, US 45-track double CD. Double digipak w/ 12 page booklet. After a notable two-year absence from the new-release racks, The Lucksmiths return with a mighty "don't argue" in the shape of 'Spring a Leak', their exhaustive new collection of lost treasures. No mere greatest hits collection, 'Spring a Leak' compiles over a decade's worth of great recordings that have never made it onto a Lucksmiths full-length: b-sides, alternative versions (from 7" singles and demos), songs recorded especially for compilations, live, radio and TV sessions, cover versions, remixes, and various previously unreleased ephemera. Forty-five songs in all, packaged in a deluxe double-CD digipak with cover artwork by budding Melbourne illustrator Trudy White. A major undertaking, both for the band and the mastering engineer who had to sift through piles of CDs, old DATs and cassette tapes, 'Spring a Leak' is the first time many of these songs have turned up on a digital format. The 'Macintyre' 7" (recorded in 1995 and originally limited to 500 highly sought-after copies) sits comfortably amongst more recent work including cover versions of well-loved songs by The Bee Gees, The Smiths, The Modern Lovers, and The Magnetic Fields, as well as lesser-known tracks by some of The Lucksmiths' friends such as The Simpletons, The Ladybug Transistor, and The Sugargliders (cousins, incidentally, of Lucksmiths singer Tali White). Also included are live tracks and radio sessions recorded in various corners of the world, from Melbourne to Stockholm, Paris, Bellingham, the Los Altos Hills (near San Francisco), and El Dorado (near, um, Wangaratta). As ever, The Lucksmiths' somewhat minimalist sound is broadened by a host of guests, from groups like US indiepop stars The Aislers Set, Poundsign, Kissing Book, The Mosquitoes, and Still Flyin', as well as artists closer to home such as Craig Pilkington of the Killjoys (who recorded many of these tracks at his Audrey Studios), Pete Cohen of Sodastream, Kellie Sutherland of Architecture in Helsinki, and Darren Hanlon. Both Kellie and Darren played major roles on The Lucksmiths' acclaimed 2000 album 'Why That Doesn't Surprise Me'. As on previous compilations 'Happy Secret' (1998) and 'Where Were We?' (2001), The Lucksmiths have done some tidying up around the archival recesses a little spring cleaning, if you will and gathered these loose ends into one neatly-knotted bundle more likely to satisfy the completists than to win themselves an army of new fans. By the nitpickingly precious Lucksmiths' own admission, the bar was lowered just a little on this one (although a few tracks originally slated for inclusion were eventually deemed unlistenable, and consequently omitted): there's the odd bum note, and, inevitably, given the nature of the project, varying degrees of quality across the recordings. In its entirety, however, 'Spring a Leak' exhibits both the remarkable consistency and ongoing development of one of this generation's most esteemed and distinctive pop groups. Although occasionally misunderstood and underrated in their homeland of Australia, The Lucksmiths have in the course of their 14-year career amassed a devoted international fanbase as well as some deserved praise from certain corners of the media. Of their 2005 album 'Warmer Corners', Pitchfork Media described The Lucksmiths as "idiosyncratic but accessible, literate but unpretentious, gentle but not weak, sincere not so much in presentation (cf. Springsteen, Bruce; Confessional, Dashboard) as in presence (cf. Richman, Jonathan; Comedy, Divine)".

Niens Circa, The
Sleeves and Wiggs
PS, CANADA This is not a museum, no velvet ropes or security guards here. These are songs, not artifacts. These songs don't want you to observe them from a cool distance. These songs want you to come inside! Sleeves and Wiggs is the second album from Vancouver's The Neins Circa. Their debut album, Sunday Anthems, was released in 2004 on Blue Curtain, the label piloted by New Pornographers leader Carl (A.C.) Newman. The album was produced by Caleb Stull of The Parlour Steps. It builds on the foundation laid by Sunday Anthems with 12 songs about real people, real places and real feelings; all filtered through a sense of wonder that elevates the mundane to the fantastic. These songs aren't merely abstract references to obscure people and places, these songs are living, breathing actualizations of Vancouver and Dilworth's hometown of Lacombe, in mid- Alberta. "The vast majority of the song structures on Sleeves And Wigs refreshingly defy formula. Even Cameron Dilworth's vocals divide between the earnestness of Ben Folds and the quirkiness of Dan Bejar (an unsurprising comparison, considering New Pornographer Carl Newman essentially discovered the band)." - EXCLAIM! Octoberman, The
Run From Safety
PS, CANADA Embodying the sensibilities of Neil Young's intimate music and Jack Kerouac's insightful travelogues, Octoberman's 2005 debut These Trails Are Old & New won widespread praise from Uncut, Maverick, Exclaim!, The Globe and Mail and dozens of other publications. Just as Morrissette's penchant for melancholic vocals and melodic guitar work caught the ears of critics, it won the hearts of audiences. The songwriter established Octoberman as a live institution in Vancouver, sometimes taking to the stage with a backing band and on other occasions with nothing more than an acoustic guitar and harmonica. Upon first listen, it's evident that Run From Safety is not only an album title but also a bold statement of intent. The album sublimely captures the sound of an artist abandoning the tried and true and striking out in unknown directions. While still fuelled by wanderlust, Octoberman's music continues to remind us that not all journeys can be measured by distance alone. Upon mastering Run From Safety, Morrissette quit his job and embarked on a European tour that lead him through five countries in five weeks. He next crossed the Atlantic, climbed into his Volkswagen and toured the continental United States. One can only imagine the questions that were raised along the way. Once Octoberman made the decision to run from safety, turning back was not an option. "a real breath of fresh air. crackly Josh Rouse singing and dark-edge songs, sometimes reminiscent of the Palace Brothers and the Decemberists. These Trails... will resonate with anyone who's strapped on a backpack, only to find there's no running away from themselves" Maverick Magazine. PS, US Pollack is a former member of Glasgow legends The Delgados, and a founder of their pioneering Chemikal Underground record label. This debut combines lyrical twists and radiant melodies into a gorgeous and organic whole. The songs are fresh, modern, and personal, deftly constructed and littered with great hooks. TIME OUT LONDON: "Emma Pollock has a terrific voice - slightly scuffed and casually soulful" AVERSION REVIEW: "After a career as one of Scotland's most respected underground acts, Pollock trades innovations and eccentricities for old-fashioned song craft on Watch the Fireworks, and the move suits her surprisingly well. Led by her familiar pop-perfect delivery (consider her the Highland's version of Neko Case), Pollock's songs are stripped-down and confident like never before. Instead of hiding behind string sections, scratching or other wrinkles, Pollock is back to basics, with a guitar, a backing band and, occasionally, a piano. Watch the Fireworks essentially picks up where Universal Audio left off, though this time around, Pollock's not shy about her pop sweet tooth."

Red Pony Clock
God Made Dirt
PS, US A psychadelic indie-pop band from San Diego, CA. Usually there's a lot of junk going on in the songs due to there usually being a lot of people playing the songs. Some of the people can play/sing really well. Some can't seem to do anything very well. But they're all very nice people, regardless. Some songs are sad. Some are happy. But we try our best to make them all nice. We love making music!!! With that great bit of information straight from the myspace out of the way Red Pony Clock have been around for what seems forever, but never seem to have had it together. One release after another thrown together for their annual summer tour that was to mainly take them from California to the Athens POPFEST and back. They found a home on Happy Happy Birthday to Me Records back in 2000 when Gabe (rpc) met Mike (hhbtm) at the Kindercore Expo in Athens, GA. Mike loved the song that Gabe presented him for his next comp Happy Happy Birthday to Me Vol 2 that he instantly told them he wanted to put out a single. The 7 inch single "Pete" came shortly after in 2002. Red Pony Clock kept evolving adding and subtracting members like an accountant. The next release was a 4 band split CD with the bands Elekibass, Poison Control Center, & Ryan Anderson released by both HHBTM & Bi-Fi Records. Another split CD was to come shortly after with the fun Swedish band Cat & Dog Dialogue released on Gabe's own label that he shared with his at the time girlfriend Lizeth called Gabe & Lizeth Records. Each year after Red Pony Clock would throw together a rushed EP on a cdr to help fund their tour to popfest and back.

This band is all about the rush, the emotion, and the infectious melodies that along with youth, good hair, and the endless pursuit of love, make up the foundation of all great pop music.

Signing Choir
S-T
PS, US The side project of The Ms bassist Joey King. After much touring, two full-lengths, and one EP with The Ms, King started to go back to his older tracks and re- hash them into what would become his debut release. With great help from all his bandmates & friends in the Chicago music community, he has banged out a true lo-fi gem. Reminiscent of early records by Guided By Voices, Pavement, and Super Furry Animals, King has tapped into a confident mix of pop & rock to showcase an eclectic batch of music.

Known for its noisy guitar soundscapes & improvisational take on psychedelic rock music. W/ a laundry list of individual accomplishments preceding them, they bring high expectations. They're robust & powerful; an exciting & often overwhelming listening experience.

Sword Heaven
Entrance
PS, US Columbus duo using sheet metal, electronics, horn, drum & treated vocals to bring a supercluster of black clouds into your zone. While there is an undeniable black tone of metallic grime hanging over the proceedings, this music will appeal to those wanting something absolute in their lives. Sort of like Swans or Godflesh, but realize that will not prepare for the all out bombast this duo spreads on your toast.

Taken By Trees
Open Field
PS, US The new project from Victoria Bergsman (former vocalist for The Concretes). You may also recognize her from one of the most popular singles of last year - Peter, Bjorn and John's infectious "Young Folks". Her solo debut was aided and abetted by fellow Peter, Bjorn and John cohorts Bjorn Yttling on various instruments and string arrangements, and John Eriksson on all percussion, marimba, and vibraphone. Other contributors include Andreas Soderstrom on guitar and Verity Susman (Electrelane) who provided piano arrangements and backing vocals. PITCHFORK REVIEW: "Bergsman's debut under the solo moniker Taken By Trees is her most consistently winning full-length since the Concretes peaked. But if Open Field leads to any similar mainstream flings, they'll still feel like fortunate flukes. Co-produced with PB&J's Björn Yttling, the album exists in its own ecstatically melancholy pre-dawn realm, at once less crowded and more lushly imagined than Bergsman's previous outings. It's personal, introspective folk-pop with the instrumental palette of a girl-group teenage symphony-- zithers, euphoniums, mandolins, and harmoniums along with flutes and a string section. Think Pink Moon on a "Be My Baby" scale."

Tough Alliance, The
New Waves
PS, CANADA File Under: Pop, Electronic. Recommended If You Like: Primal Scream, Daft Punk, Klaxons, Orange Juice. Already a successful chart band in their home country of Sweden, TTA have established a reputation for making fiercely intelligent music that is unabashedly populist and accessible, all without ever submitting to the trappings of the new pop machine. Their love for making sounds of absolute joy and escapism could only be rivaled by their distaste for today's crass, shameless means of self-promotion. Instead of friendwhoring on Myspace, the boys have focused on making music that's a dreamy wash of the synthetic and organic, rollicking with the perfect sync and simplicity of timeless bubblegum pop. PITCHFORK REVIEW!: Rating: 8.0. "Henning Fürst and Eric Berglund aren't "real" pop stars; they just play them in Sweden. As electronic pop duo the Tough Alliance, Fürst and Berglund perform their live shows without instruments, committing the ultimate rock heresy of dancing and miming to pre-recorded tracks. (Just ask the Knife. Or Milli Vanilli.) The tracks themselves seem to aspire to platinum status, matching shiny digital beats to vaguely tropical synths, sugar-sweet melodies, and cryptic yet simple lyrics that often involve romance. If you weren't paying attention, you might think they had more in common with Ace of Base than with other Gothenburg-born groups such as the Knife or Love Is All. Like Malcolm McLaren or the KLF, though, the Tough Alliance spike their pop with Situationist politics, sometimes to a point where it's difficult to separate the music from the group's broader arsenal of cultural weaponry. In keeping with the Tough Alliance's multimedia tactics, New Waves come with a pair of videos. If the duo's full political intentions aren't necessarily clear at the end of the EP, their musical ones are: Fürst and Berglund are a couple of punk-minded provocateurs who play pop not for camp value or hipster irony, but because it's the purest form of expression a boy has left."

PS, US Limited to 500 copies on amber/gold vinyl! The song - not on "Blood is Clean" - finds Honey Owens connecting to song traditions she has hitherto avoided, but without sacrificing the spiritual energy or exploratory sonics of her more abstract material. It is, at once, an unabashed classic & something entirely new. The B-Side, Beachgaze Rendered, is another exclusive track, a dose of supremely convincing space-rock ambience under an oceanic spell that's two parts undertow, one part vortex.

Kurt Cobain About A Son: Music From The Motion Picture
PS, US This film is an intimate and moving portrait of Kurt Cobain, told entirely in his own voice. Based on more than 25 hours of never before heard interviews conducted by noted journalist Michael Azerrad for his book "Come As You Are: The Story Of Nirvana". The soundtrack does not contain Kurt or Nirvana's music. Says Azerrad, "It's like a mixtape you'd give to a friend or lover to share ideas, not just about music but about your whole point of view. It's to try to show them what you're all about. So if watching 'About A Son' is like seeing the world through Kurt's eyes, then listening to this music is like hearing it through his ears." Artists include Arlo Guthrie, Melvins, Bad Brains, CCR, Half Japanese, The Vaselines, Butthole Surfers, Scratch Acid, Mudhoney, Iggy Pop, Lead Belly, REM, David Bowie, Mark Lanegan, and Benjamin Gibbard.

With The Sun In My Eyes: 20 Psychedelic Spins from the UK & Europe
PS, UK With so many similarly-themed comps around, it's genuinely difficult to come up with 20 killer tracks previously uncomped on CD. However, the Psychic Circle label happily reassures any worried aficionado that the well has not run dry. It may take a little longer for the pebble to hit the water, but when it does, there are still bucketfuls of lysergically-treated fluid to draw up. Here, you'll find Elton John's rhythm section, Hungary's top psych band, an army PE instructor who thought he was the reincarnation of an Egyptian pharaoh, a Swedish Red Indian expert whose brother sold his records door to door, and the man who asked "Where Do You Go To My Lovely?" getting decidedly strange, plus a whole bunch of other psyched-out artistes. Just say yes. Compiled by legendary psych musician and Psychic Circle label-head, Nick Saloman (The Bevis Frond). Artists include: Plastic Penny, Peter Sarstedt, The Mindbenders, Ola & The Janglers, Omega Group, Zion De Gallier, The Gnomes Of Zurich, The Rattles, Foggy, Majority One, Schadel, Sound Network, Youngblood, Ramases, Grand Union, Winston G, Peter & The Wolves, Don Curtis, Giorgio and The Mooche.

The Electric Coffee House: 20 Mid-Sixties Garage/Folk Gems from the USA
PS, UK Compilation concentrates on that Byrds-inspired period when folk plugged into amplifiers and came up with a sound built on 12-stringed guitars and harmonies, but with a generous helping of rock and roll added to the mix. The album comprises 20 tracks, previously uncomped on CD from such disparate artists as Elvis Presley's favorite garage band, a blind singer discovered by Davy Jones of The Monkees, a Mexican band who had to learn their lyrics phonetically, and the young Terry Jacks (of "Seasons in the Sun" notoriety), plus a host of other harmonizing hopefuls. Prepare to be well and truly jangled. Compiled by legendary psych musician and Psychic Circle label-head, Nick Saloman (The Bevis Frond). Artists include: The Tiffany System, The Energy Package, Tommy Jay, Finders Keepers, Rick Jarrard, The Clefs Of Lavender Hill, The Guilloteens, The Sound Of The Seventh Son, Jeremiah, The Iguanas, Vinnie Basile, The Yankee Dollar, Starbuck, The High-Five, The Chessmen, Peck's Bad Boys, The Stream of Consciousness, Keith Murphy And The Daze, The Scandal and The Gants.

Yeasayer
2080/Sunrise
PS, US 2080/Sunrise is the single for the forthcoming YEASAYER full-length debut, due out the fall of 2007. Soothsayers, crystal-gazers, and time travelersŠthey have all seen the future. Spilling words of Armageddon, the apocalypse, and the second coming of Christ they speak of man's impending doom. With countries on the warpath and our decaying world growing inhabitable it is easy to succumb to the voices of these scholars. YEASAYER have also been witness to the future. "2080/Sunrise" documents their visions and experiences in the years that lie ahead. Discern what you will from the lyrics, but YEASAYER'S songs flow with posi-vibes that will make you dance and trumpet. It is optimism, it is joy. "It's a new year, I'm glad to be here, it's a fresh spring, so lets sing. In 2080 I will will surely be dead, so don't look ahead, never look ahead."

A Taste Of Ra
Morning of My Life (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 23RD)
PS, SWEDEN This is the third and final album in the A Taste of Ra trilogy. Nicolai Dunger, and the cloak of mystery behind the Taste of Ra project has captivated many with its various incarnations of free-folk meanderings, Tim Buckley jazz-howl and Swedish pastoral indie-hum. Dunger describes Morning of My Life as follows: "When we moved to the tent and the light was golden and we were young, and the magazine was all there was to bring, and you woke in the night when the birds were singing just for you and the smell of soil and the warm breath over through you, ohh it moved you. All there was to it, was the morning of my life." He also describes that the overall idea behind the first two A Taste of Ra records was for pure vocal and instrumental experimentation -- using recording techniques on a more personal level. On this final record in the trilogy, he takes a different approach, starting off with one song that he developed together with Swedish musician, songwriter and producer, Jari Haapalainen. The song naturally broke up into six movements, creating a film-like, dramatic pattern, and Johan Berthling made some beautiful arrangements for three of the movements. Starsailor-esque vocals, jazzy horns and loose, clattering drums mix with piano, harp and guitar arpeggios -- just as much of an Impressionistic song cycle as Van Morrison's Astral Weeks.

Acid Mothers Guru Guru
Psychedelic Navigator (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 18TH)
PS, US AcidMothersGuruGuru features Mani Neumeier from the legendary and influential German Krautrock group Guru Guru as well as Kawabata Makoto and Atsushi Tsuyama from Japan's holy Acid Mothers Temple. The result is a fiery fantasy filled, loud/soft, colorful trans-generational psychedelic collaboration. The Acid Mothers Guru Guru started in a spontaneous session in March of 2006 in Nagoya, Japan. When the improvisation commenced the passionate excitement was clear to all in the room and it was then that this special psychedelic trio began. A Japanese tour was planned, an album was recorded and this recording is the fruit of this mutual musical admiration. While all involved will admit that this is a dream of collaborations it was the Acid Mothers Temple guys who were worshipping Guru Guru in their teens. The Acid Mothers Guru Guru is two generations of psychedelic rock joining forces for the 21st century.

In Light (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE NOVEMBER 6TH)
PS, NORWAY Arp is the most recent project of Alexis Georgopoulos, formerly of Tussle & The Alps. As an emblem of Alexis' commitment to "natural electronic music" (bridging the natural and electronic worlds), nearly all of In Light was recorded live. Very few loops were used - in fact, only one. This gesture was meant to bring back some of the rough (re: natural) edges that have been lost in so much "Electronic Music" today. In Light is a luminous album of warm, pulsing music.

Made with little more than magnetic tape, Ed's voice, and the stunningly modern arrangements of his beloved Martin Tiple, "Little Eyes" is as grand, sad, and beautiful a statement as can be expressed. His off-key lilt hangs like a seductive pink mist, and settles deeply; you'll hear these songs long after they're over. PS, US Recorded in Topanga Canyon in the Santa Monica mountains. Neil Young lived there while recording "After The Gold Rush" and the area has also been home to Emmylou Harris, Taj Mahal, Joni Mitchell, Mick Fleetwood, and members of The Doors. Those ghosts inhabit the sound and vibe of these recording sessions. Banhart's whole "freak folk" tag is gone, replaced with this classic, gorgeous rock album. Some songs are fragile and solipsistic, others have a pronounced tropicalia influence, and
still others are wildly electric and epic.
